Latest / CCC West Covina / The Model Life: Adoration, Part 5
Transcript
- 0:00You know, the model life is a life that's built around
- 0:03thankfulness, not just joyfulness, and not just
- 0:07prayerfulness, but thankfulness. The trilogy of commands in First
- 0:13Thessalonians, chapter 5, verse 1617 and 18 exemplify the life
- 0:19of adoration, the life that truly adores God and worships
- 0:24God. And it's always marked by
- 0:28joyfulness, prayerfulness, and thankfulness.
- 0:34Over the last several weeks we have spent time looking at what
- 0:37it means to rejoice always, verse 16, what it means to pray
- 0:41without ceasing, verse #17 today, what it means to give
- 0:46thanks in everything. For this is God's will in Christ
- 0:51Jesus concerning you. The will of God is not just to
- 0:57be thankful. The will of God encompasses the
- 1:01trilogy of commands. God's design and God's desire
- 1:06for you is that you be joyful, you be prayerful, and that you
- 1:12be thankful. If you want to understand the
- 1:16will of God for your life, that's where it begins.
- 1:21If you're looking for God to guide you into a, a new job or
- 1:24or guide you into the person you are to marry or, or to guide you
- 1:28and making the right decision. And yet you have a a bad
- 1:30attitude and are ungrateful and you don't pray always and you
- 1:35have a sad heart and not a joyful heart.
- 1:37Guess what? You're not going to have any
- 1:39direction whatsoever because God's will for you is that you
- 1:44be joyful, you be prayerful and you be thankful all the time in
- 1:49everything. This was guy's not designed for
- 1:53us. This only one's for his
- 1:55children. So incredibly important every
- 2:00year at at Thanksgiving, which is about 12 weeks away, just in
- 2:03case you didn't know it's it's right around the corner.
- 2:07I always tell you that that Thanksgiving is not a holiday
- 2:09vacation. It's a holy vocation.
- 2:14We look at Thanksgiving is a time to get away, a vacation
- 2:17time, a holiday. You look at it for the wrong
- 2:21reason. It's a holy vocation.
- 2:26We've been called by God to give thanks.
- 2:31Listen to what the psalmist says in in Psalm 100, very familiar
- 2:36Psalm to most of us. Shout joyfully to the Lord, all
- 2:40the earth. In other words, be joyful.
- 2:43Serve the Lord with gladness, come before Him with joyful
- 2:47singing. Know that the Lord himself is
- 2:49God. It is He who made us in, not we
- 2:52ourselves. We are His people and the sheep
- 2:55of His pasture. We've been formed by God.
- 2:58We've been made by God. We are His people.
- 3:01Therefore, enter His gates with Thanksgiving and His courts with
- 3:06praise. Give thanks to Him.
- 3:08Bless His name, for the Lord is good, His loving kindness is
- 3:13everlasting, and His faithfulness to all generations.
- 3:18Come into His presence with Thanksgiving.
- 3:22Enter His courts with praise. When you come to worship the
- 3:27Lord, you come with a thankful heart, a heart filled with joy
- 3:33and praise to God. Did you come to church today,
- 3:36Grumpy? Did you come to church today
- 3:40with a bad attitude? Did you come to church today
- 3:43because things weren't going your way in the car on the way
- 3:46over? So many times we we get off
- 3:49kilter by by looking at all the negative circumstances instead
- 3:53of realizing all the things that God has done.
- 3:56I love what the psalmist says over in Psalm 116.
- 4:02He says in verse #12 what should I render to the Lord for all of
- 4:04his benefits toward me? So someone was to ask you a
- 4:08question and say, OK, what will you render to the Lord?
- 4:10What will you give to the Lord for all the benefits that he's
- 4:13bestowed upon you? What would you say?
- 4:17Psalmist answers. He says, I shall lift up the cup
- 4:22of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord.
- 4:28Because of all the things the Lord has done for me, I will be
- 4:32#1 prayerful #2 I shall pay my vows to the Lord.
- 4:38O may it be in the presence of His people.
- 4:43I will pay my vows. I will be responsible.
- 4:47Not only will I be prayerful, but I will be dutiful to to
- 4:51fulfill my responsibility. And then he says, precious in
- 4:56the sight of the Lord is the death of his godly ones.
- 5:02I will be hopeful for 16. Oh Lord, surely I am your
- 5:07servant. I am your servant, the son of
- 5:10your handmaid. You have loosed my bonds because
- 5:14I'm your servant. I will not just be prayerful,
- 5:18not just be dutiful, not just be hopeful, but I will be useful
- 5:24because I am your servant and I will be used by you for your
- 5:28glory. And then he says this to you.
- 5:32I shall offer a sacrifice of Thanksgiving and call upon the
- 5:38name of the Lord. I will be thankful.
- 5:44I will be thankful. Let me ask you a question.
- 5:50Does that characterize you today?
- 5:54William Law, an 18th century writer and preacher, wrote a
- 6:01book entitled A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life.
- 6:09In that book he says this. Would you know who is the
- 6:15greatest St. in all the world? It is not he who prays most.
- 6:24It is not he who fasts most, it is not he who gives most alms or
- 6:32is most imminent for temperance, chastity, or justice.
- 6:39But it is he who is always thankful to God, who wills
- 6:47everything that God willeth, who receives everything as an
- 6:51instance of God's goodness, and has a heart always ready to
- 6:57praise God for it. The greatest St. in all the
- 7:05world is a St. that gives thanks unceasingly to God.
- 7:13I wonder if you do that? Paul says we're to give thanks
- 7:18in everything. In everything in Ephesians 5, he
- 7:25says we're to give thanks for everything.
- 7:32So when you think about that and you think, OK, I'm to give
- 7:36thanks for everything, yes, that's what it says.
- 7:41And in everything, absolutely. But the question comes, do we do
- 7:47that? And for the most part, we don't.
- 7:51But you have to realize that that that thankfulness is is
- 7:56what sets the Christian apart from everyone else in the world.
- 8:05In fact, listen to what it says over in second Timothy chapter 3
- 8:09verse #1 says. But realize this, that in the
- 8:12last days, difficult times or perilous times will come.
- 8:16For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful,
- 8:19arrogant vilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful.
- 8:27The characteristic of perilous times and and the word for
- 8:29perilous or or difficult times is the same word used in Mark's
- 8:34gospel to talk about a man who was demon possessed.
- 8:37So he's talking about demonic times, the times that are
- 8:43characterized by demons in times.
- 8:49What is mostly characteristic is that people will be not just
- 8:53disobedient to parents, but they're going to be ungrateful.
- 8:55In fact, Romans one says it this way, Romans one verse #21 For
- 9:01even though they knew God, they did not honor him, ask God, or
- 9:04give thanks to God. The characteristic of the
- 9:08unbeliever is that he will not give thanks to God.
- 9:11Not that he can't, but he won't. He just won't give thanks to
- 9:16God. And yet the believer is
- 9:22characterized by a heart filled with Thanksgiving, filled with
- 9:29gratitude, filled with gratefulness to their God.
- 9:36So important. Turn in your Bible, if you
- 9:40would, to Luke's gospel, the 17th chapter, Luke's gospel, the
- 9:4817th chapter. You know the story.
- 9:55It's a very familiar story, says in verse #11 when he was on the
- 10:02way to Jerusalem, he was passing between Samaria and Galilee.
- 10:07As he entered a village, 10 leprous men who stood at a
- 10:11distance met him and they raised their voices saying, Jesus,
- 10:16Master, have mercy on us. Now here are these 10 lepers.
- 10:26They're in this in the outskirts of this village, and they see
- 10:31Jesus coming. And the reputation of Jesus by
- 10:35this time is, is all throughout the land of Israel.
- 10:40Everybody knows who Jesus is. He's the miracle worker.
- 10:45He takes the blind and causes them to see, takes the lame and
- 10:49lets them walk, takes the dead and raises them up.
- 10:56So here comes Jesus. And so these men who are, who
- 11:00are filled with leprosy, see this as an opportunity to ask
- 11:06Jesus to plead with Jesus to have mercy upon them and heal
- 11:11them. I mean, if it was you, would you
- 11:14not do that? Of course you would.
- 11:17Here's the miracle worker. Here's the all powerful one.
- 11:22Here's the one that can do what no one else has ever done.
- 11:24Well, we, we need to ask him to have mercy upon us.
- 11:28Look what happens next. When he saw them, he said to
- 11:36them, go and show yourself to the priests in Luke 5, he he
- 11:43touched the man with leprosy. He doesn't touch these men.
- 11:49He doesn't say be healed, don't do that either.
- 11:55He he wants to to test the meagerness of their faith.
- 12:01You see, they already believe that Jesus is a miracle worker.
- 12:07So they already believe in the power of Jesus.
- 12:11They already believe in the reputation of Jesus.
- 12:15So that's their faith. They, they, they believe in who
- 12:18he is based on what he has done already.
- 12:25And so he says to them, go and show yourself to the priest.
- 12:30Why would we say that? Because Christ came to fulfill
- 12:33all the law. And the law in Leviticus 17 and
- 12:3518 would meant that the priest who are the inspectors of those
- 12:40who are leprous, would determine whether or not they were healed
- 12:43or not. And he wants them to go to the
- 12:46priest, because 10 men who are filled with leprosy, who are
- 12:50healed is an overwhelming example of the power of God to
- 12:55the priest of Israel that they would not be able to deny.
- 13:02And so he says, go and show yourself to the priests.
- 13:06And so they all get up and they make their way toward the temple
- 13:12in Jerusalem, so says. And as they were going, they
- 13:21were cleansed. So uneventful, so low key, No
- 13:30balloons, no whistles, no lights, no hoopla, nothing like
- 13:36that. Just as they were going, they
- 13:42were cleansed. This is a remarkable
- 13:47understatement in the Scriptures, but that's what the
- 13:51the Lord wanted to say. And then it says this.
- 13:58Now one of them we saw that he had been healed.
- 14:03Turn back, turn back, glorifying God with a loud voice and fell
- 14:12on his face at his feet, giving thanks.
- 14:22He was a Samaritan. See, this man wanted physical
- 14:34cleansing, but he knew he needed spiritual cleansing, and so he
- 14:44knew that. So he went back to the one who
- 14:48cleansed him and glorified his name with a loud voice, No shame
- 14:58praising his name, then falling down before him, because worship
- 15:04is known by a thankful heart. Not only am I joyful and
- 15:09prayerful, but I am thankful. It's the model life of
- 15:12adoration. So he here, here, he adores his
- 15:16God. He falls before him and gives
- 15:19thanks to him. He recognizes his deity, He
- 15:23understands his iniquity, and he cries out for mercy.
- 15:30And Christ responds with three simple questions.
- 15:35Were there not ten cleansed that, he says, but they're 9.
- 15:46Where are they? Was no one found who returned to
- 15:52give glory to God except this foreigner, this Samaritan?
- 15:59Was no one willing to to exalt God?
- 16:02Was no one willing to adore God, to worship God except this one
- 16:07person? You see, they're, they're
- 16:11indicative of Israel. They, they want Jesus to do for
- 16:15them. When Jesus feeds them, they're
- 16:18great. They love him.
- 16:21When Jesus heals them, they are ecstatic.
- 16:26But when Jesus preaches to them, they can't stand him.
- 16:30They just love what Jesus does for them.
- 16:33They were consumers, a lot like people today and in the church.
- 16:37They go to church for what the church can do for them.
- 16:41They are called consumer Christians.
- 16:44Can the church do this for me? Can the church do that for me?
- 16:47Can the church meet this need? Can the church meet that need?
- 16:51That's the way the Israel was with with with Jesus.
- 16:55Do this for me. Jesus He did because he's a God
- 17:00of grace, mercy, compassion, and love.
- 17:06Were there not ten? There were cleansed.
- 17:11Where are the other nine? Where'd they go?
- 17:14How come they're not with you? Do they not want to recognize
- 17:19God and give glory to his name? He said to him, Stand up and go.
- 17:26Your faith has made you well. The word for well is sodzo, most
- 17:33common word for salvation in the Testament.
- 17:35Your faith has saved you. See, the unbeliever doesn't care
- 17:42to give thanks. There's a want to give thanks.
- 17:48The believer cannot help but give thanks.
- 17:52That's the difference. And that's why the model life is
- 17:55filled with with adoration. And yet, yet we find it's such a
- 18:03hard thing to be thankful in everything.
- 18:12Turn with me in your Bible to another passage.
- 18:16Again, another familiar one, but always good to be reminded.
- 18:21And that's the passage in the book of Philippians, Philippians
- 18:28chapter 2. So we are to give thanks in
- 18:34everything. First Thessalonians 518 we're to
- 18:38give thanks for everything or for all things.
- 18:42Ephesians 520 so Paul is going to turn that around and say
- 18:47these words in Philippians 214 do all things, all things, all
- 18:54things without what grumbling and disputing.
- 19:01So in all things, give thanks, give thanks for all things, so
- 19:06that in all things you do not grumble or complain.
- 19:13The word for dispute is a is a word to question.
- 19:17Do all things without questioning.
- 19:20That's very hard for us, isn't it?
- 19:23We always want to know the answer.
- 19:24Why? Why?
- 19:26Why do I have to do this? Why do I have to obey that
- 19:28command? Why do I have to forget that
- 19:30person? Why?
- 19:32And God just give commands. He doesn't give suggestions and
- 19:35he doesn't OfferUp an opinion. He just gives you commands.
- 19:40And the word for grumbling is a is a word for complaining.
- 19:46Complaining. Now maybe that's not you today,
- 19:52but people have all kinds of things to complain about.
- 19:55They complain because we have bagels and not doughnuts in
- 19:58between services. Figure that.
- 20:03Figure that they complain because there's not air
- 20:05conditioning in the foyer. But there's a method to our
- 20:09madness. It gets you into the auditorium
- 20:11quicker where it is air conditioned.
- 20:14But we complain there's no air conditioning in the foyer.
- 20:18We complain about how long it takes to sign in our children to
- 20:21take in the class. We complain about where we have
- 20:26to park in the middle of someone on the outskirts of someone on
- 20:30the other side of the auditorium.
- 20:32We, there are so many things that we complain about.
- 20:35We don't even think about it. If Paul says, I want you to do
- 20:39all things without complaining, as a mother, I, I want you to,
- 20:48to care for your children without complaining, without
- 20:51grumbling, right? You ask the Lord for children.
- 20:58The Lord gives you a gift, and then you complain about how much
- 21:00time it takes to take care of the children.
- 21:03Why would you do that? There are gifts from God.
- 21:08If we find ways to complain and grumble, we complain because I
- 21:14no longer can do the things I used to do when I didn't have
- 21:16children, but now that I have children, I can't do those
- 21:18things anymore. So I complain about not having
- 21:20time to do those things and I begin to grumble and mumble.
- 21:26You see, we find so many things to to complain and moan and and
- 21:32groan about. And Paul says just the reverse
- 21:37of Ephesians 520 and 1st. That's why it's 518 and
- 21:43everything that you do, don't complain and do not grumble.
- 21:49Do not question. So that what you will prove
- 21:56yourselves to be blameless, innocent children of God above
- 22:01reproach, in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation,
- 22:05among whom you appear as lights in the world, in order to prove
- 22:10that you are different than the world, in order to prove that
- 22:13you are a light in the world, in order to prove that you are a
- 22:15child of God. It comes because you do not
- 22:18complain and you do not question.
- 22:26I love the words of Thomas Watson, that great Puritan
- 22:30preacher and writer, when he said this.
- 22:35By praise a Christian excels all the infernal spirits.
- 22:40Do you talk of God? So does the devil.
- 22:45He brought scripture to Christ. Do you profess religion?
- 22:53So can the devil. He transforms himself into an
- 22:58Angel of light. Do you fast?
- 23:03The devil never eats. Do you believe the devils have a
- 23:09faith of ascent? They believe, and yet they
- 23:12tremble. But as Moses worked such a
- 23:16miracle as none of the magicians could reproduce, so here is a
- 23:21work Christians may be doing which no or none of the devils
- 23:25can do, and that is the work of Thanksgiving.
- 23:34Devils can't do that. Only the Christian can.
- 23:40The world grumbles and Mumbles and moans and groans and
- 23:44disputes, right? But the Christian, no, he, he
- 23:49proves himself different than the world.
- 23:51He's he's completely the opposite.
- 23:56He's given thanks in all things and for all things.
- 24:02I love the story that Spurgeon tells when he says I once heard
- 24:08a a touchy story about a poor woman with two children who had
- 24:12no bed for them to sleep in, and scarcely any clothes to cover
- 24:17them. In the depth of winter.
- 24:20They were nearly frozen, and the mother took the door of a cellar
- 24:24off the hinges and set it up before the corner where they
- 24:28crouched to sleep, that some of the draft and cold might be kept
- 24:35from them. One of the children whispered to
- 24:39her when the mother complained. Mother, what do those dear
- 24:46little children do who have no cellar door to put up in front
- 24:53of them, hmm? Spurgeon says.
- 24:58Even there you see the little heart found cause for
- 25:03thankfulness. Thankful for a cellar door that
- 25:09just blocks some of the cold. Not all the cold, but just some
- 25:15of the cold. And what do those children do
- 25:20who have no cellar door to block the cold for them?
- 25:26A heart of thankfulness. Now I know that most of us hear
- 25:36this and think little of it. It's not that big a deal.
- 25:42Oh, it's a big deal. Let me show you turn to 1st
- 25:46Corinthians chapter 10, First Corinthians chapter 10 and let
- 25:57me show you how big a deal this is.
- 26:02First one for I do not want you to be uninformed, brethren.
- 26:05I don't want you to, the King James Version says.
- 26:07I don't want you to be ignorant, brethren, that our fathers were
- 26:12all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all
- 26:15were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all
- 26:20ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual
- 26:23drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which
- 26:27followed them, and the rock was Christ.
- 26:32He talks about Israel's privileges and all that they had
- 26:38as a unit, as a nation that came from God.
- 26:43Verse 5. Nevertheless, with most of them
- 26:46God was not pleased, for they were laid low in the wilderness.
- 26:55This is a nice way of saying they died in the wilderness.
- 26:59Here was this nation who received all these blessings
- 27:01from God, and they received them all at once as a as a nation of
- 27:07of 2 million Jews. But nevertheless, for a lot of
- 27:14them, God was not even pleased with them.
- 27:18So he killed them in the wilderness for six.
- 27:25Now these things happen as examples for us so that we would
- 27:30not crave evil things as they also crave.
- 27:35This is an example. This is an illustration Paul was
- 27:39telling the Church of Corinth. Look, these are examples of what
- 27:43not to do. He says verse 7, do not be
- 27:49idolatrous as some of them were. As it is written, the people sat
- 27:52down to eat and drink, and stood up to play.
- 27:56Nor verse 8 Let us act immorally, as some of them did,
- 28:00and 23,000 fell in one day. Nor let us try the Lord, as some
- 28:08of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents.
- 28:10Nor grumble question as some of them did and were destroyed by
- 28:23the destroyer. We understand where God would
- 28:27kill those who committed idolatry.
- 28:31We understand that God would kill those who committed
- 28:33immorality. But why would God kill somebody
- 28:37who grumbles? I mean, compare the two
- 28:41grumbling, idolatry, complaining, immorality.
- 28:46In our minds, they're like, whoa, there's such a difference
- 28:50between the two sins. But in God's mind, sin is still
- 28:55sin. And of course, the reference is
- 29:01Numbers chapter 16, where they're in Numbers 16.
- 29:09Cora Dathan in a Byram rebelled against the leadership of Moses
- 29:15and Aaron, and God opened up the ground and swallowed them and
- 29:21their families all alive, and then closed the ground over
- 29:24them. And then 250 other men thought
- 29:31that he could act like priests. And God sent fire down from
- 29:34heaven and incinerated those men.
- 29:40And the people complained. They grumbled, They questioned
- 29:47Moses, and then questioning Moses, they were questioning
- 29:50God. Why would God do this?
- 29:53Why would God lead us out here and then kill us?
- 29:57And God was incensed. So instead of plague and killed
- 30:0314,700 of them, if it wasn't for Moses and Aaron interceding on
- 30:09Israel's behalf, he probably would have killed every single
- 30:13one of them. Grumbling questions and doubts.
- 30:23God's sovereignty, His goodness, His mercy, His Providence.
- 30:33When you begin to grumble and complain, you are saying, God,
- 30:37you didn't do it good enough, or you didn't do it right, or you
- 30:41didn't do it in my way, because my way is better than God's way.
- 30:48You gave me this when I asked for that, You did this when I
- 30:52wanted that and to begin to complain.
- 30:59Husbands do it all the time, following in the footsteps of
- 31:03Adam. When Adam said it's the woman
- 31:08you gave me Lord, he blamed the Lord.
- 31:13He grumbled to complain because of sin, because of the woman
- 31:16that God gave him. See and see.
- 31:21Isn't it a miracle that that that God doesn't kill us when we
- 31:24grumble? Think about that.
- 31:27Think. Think about your day.
- 31:29Think about your week, how many times you complained about what
- 31:32was taking place in your life, your family, your work, your
- 31:36school, because things didn't go the way you thought they should
- 31:41go. So you criticize, You moan, you
- 31:49complain, you groan over and over and over again.
- 31:59And God in his grace allows you to continue living.
- 32:06That is a that is a walking miracle of God that you're still
- 32:13alive today even though you disobey the commands of God.
- 32:20So Paul says, do not grumble, do not complain about anything,
- 32:31just don't do it instead in everything and for it just give
- 32:37thanks to God. Can you do that?
- 32:46If you're an unbeliever, you cannot do that.
- 32:49You don't even want to do that. If you're a believer, your
- 32:54hearts cry as Lord, I want to, I want to cry out to you and, and
- 32:57thankfulness for what you've done.
- 33:02Am I to thank the Lord for for a bad marriage?
- 33:05Absolutely, absolutely. Because why is the marriage bad?
- 33:13Is it just all on him or all on her?
- 33:18Or do you play a part in it as well?
- 33:22And bad is relative, is it not? To you?
- 33:27Your bad marriage might be good to somebody else's marriage, I
- 33:31don't know. But do you rejoice with the wife
- 33:36of your youth? That's what Solomon says.
- 33:41Rejoice with the wife of your youth.
- 33:43But we want to complain about the wife of our youth because
- 33:46she doesn't do what she used to do.
- 33:50Well, that's no good. Who's that help?
- 33:55We, we had to give thanks for everything in everything.
- 34:01And I know that some of you right now your, your wheels are
- 34:03spinning in your mind and you're looking for an excuse that says,
- 34:07you know God. I know that God does not expect
- 34:10me to give thanks in this situation or for this situation.
- 34:15I know you're, you're thinking that and you're going to ask the
- 34:17question, well, what do you mean that I in this situation or, or
- 34:20in this circumstance or or in this way or I know you're asking
- 34:24that question in your own mind. We all do.
- 34:30But can't we just rest in what God has said, because
- 34:36thankfulness reveals so much about our lives?
- 34:40It reveals #1 this is my outline.
- 34:42This is all introduction up to now.
- 34:45It reveals our conversion to Christ.
- 34:50That's the Philippians 2 says. It reveals our conversion to
- 34:54Christ. That's what Luke 17 said.
- 34:56We read about the 10 lepers, but listen to what Paul says in
- 35:01Colossians 2. Therefore, as you have received
- 35:05Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.
- 35:08How did you receive Him? By faith or by grace through
- 35:11faith, right? So you walk by faith, by the
- 35:15grace of God, have you been firmly rooted and now being
- 35:18built up in Him and established in your faith just as you were
- 35:22instructed and overflowing with gratitude.
- 35:29What a statement. Overflowing with gratitude,
- 35:35because what thankfulness does is reveal my conversion to
- 35:41Christ. There's been a transformation.
- 35:43I'm not like the Pagan world. I'm not ungrateful.
- 35:46I'm not unthankful. I am not the person who just
- 35:50tries to consume from God. I really want to obey God and
- 35:53thank him for what he's done and give praise to his glorious
- 35:57name. So it reveals my conversion to
- 36:05Christ. 2nd Corinthians 915 Thanks being to God for His
- 36:11indescribable gift. I'm not so sure we understand
- 36:16the indescribable nature of the gift of God, because if we did,
- 36:23we'd be giving thanks all the time.
- 36:26Fact. You got to get used to it
- 36:30because the Book of Revelation says this.
- 36:34And when the living creatures gave glory and honor and thanks
- 36:38to him who sits on the throne, to him who lives forever and
- 36:42ever, the 24 elders which is the church will fall down before him
- 36:47who sits on the throne and will worship him who lives forever
- 36:50and ever, and will cast their crowns before the throne,
- 36:54saying, Worthy are you our Lord and our God to receive glory and
- 37:00honor and power. For you created all things, and
- 37:05because of your will they existed and were created. 4
- 37:12Living creatures stand around the throne of God, always saying
- 37:17holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.
- 37:22Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.
- 37:29Worship him, praise him, honor him with Thanksgiving.
- 37:40And they haven't been redeemed, for living creatures have not
- 37:44been redeemed. They're spirit beings, they're
- 37:48angels. But us, we've been redeemed.
- 37:54And so a thankful heart reveals #1 my conversion to Christ #2 it
- 38:03reveals my commitment to the will of God, my commitment to
- 38:10the will of God. In other words, this is the will
- 38:14of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
- 38:16What? That you give thanks in all
- 38:18things. So now I'm, I'm going to reveal
- 38:22my commitment to God. Lord, not only am I converted by
- 38:27you, I am committed to you so much so that I will purpose in
- 38:34my heart to give thanks to you in everything.
- 38:42Remember Jonah, the will of God was for Jonah to go to Nineveh
- 38:49to give thanks and everything. Jonah wasn't about to give
- 38:54thanks nor go to Nineveh. He went the opposite way.
- 39:00And you know the story so overboard, swallowed by a great
- 39:04fish. He's in the belly of the fish
- 39:07and listen to what he says in the belly of the fish.
- 39:11While I was fainting away, verse 7 of Jonah chapter 2, I
- 39:16remembered the Lord. It's always good to remember the
- 39:23Lord, especially when you're in the belly of a fish.
- 39:29I remember the Lord, and my prayer came to you into your
- 39:33holy temple. Those who regard vain idols
- 39:40forsake their faithfulness. He did.
- 39:45He forsook His faithfulness. He forsook His commitment
- 39:50because he regarded vain idols. It's in this case was him the
- 39:54worship of himself that he would not go and preach the gospel to
- 39:59the Ninevites because they were an ungodly nation.
- 40:06And those who regard their idols always forsake their
- 40:12faithfulness, their commitment. Why do we forsake our commitment
- 40:16to giving thanks to God? Because we have another idol,
- 40:21something more important to us than the true living God.
- 40:27So he says. But I will sacrifice to you with
- 40:33the voice of Thanksgiving that which I have vowed.
- 40:40I will pay salvation from the Lord.
- 40:44Then the Lord commanded the fish and vomited Jonah up on dry
- 40:51land. Maybe, just maybe, God is
- 40:57patiently waiting for your situation, your attitude to say,
- 41:08Lord, I have forsaken my commitment.
- 41:13I will sacrifice to you with the voice of Thanksgiving.
- 41:18I will thank you that I am single and not married.
- 41:25I will thank you that I am married but can't have children.
- 41:31I will thank you that even though I want to be physically
- 41:35better, I know that Your grace is sufficient for me.
- 41:41And I thank you. And maybe it's that time that
- 41:47God throws you up out of your situation onto solid ground.
- 41:55I don't know. But I do know this Thanksgiving
- 42:03reveals my conversion to Christ. It reveals my commitment to the
- 42:11will of God. What else does it reveal?
- 42:18Well, you're going to have to come back next week.
- 42:23Figure that one out. Let's pray.
- 42:26Lord, we are grateful for today. Truly, Lord, you are a great
- 42:31God. Forgive us for our ingratitude.
- 42:39Pray that all of our lives will be challenged today to live for
- 42:43the glory and honor of Your name.
- 42:47Then we might give praise and Thanksgiving to you in Jesus
- 42:55name, Amen.
