Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
• 0:06
rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, June 14th.
• 0:11
Wisdom over anger. Life can feel like a storm
• 0:15
  sometimes. Maybe it's a parent who doesn't
• 0:18
understand you, a sibling who drives you absolutely crazy, a
• 0:23
friend who betrayed your trust, a situation at school that feels
• 0:27
completely unfair. And in those moments, the
• 0:30
pressure to react, to say something sharp, to fight back,
• 0:33
to let people know exactly how you feel is intense.
• 0:38
Proverbs chapter 17, verses 25 to 27 give us a picture of what
• 0:43
wisdom looks like in those moments.
• 0:45
One who has knowledge restrains his words, and a man of
• 0:48
  understanding is calm, restraint, calmness.
• 0:53
These aren't signs of weakness or passivity.
• 0:56
They're signs of a person who knows who they are, who their
• 0:59
God is, and that not every moment requires a reaction.
• 1:04
David describes the opposite feeling in Psalm 69 verses one
• 1:07
and two. Save me, oh God, for the waters
• 1:11
have come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire where there
• 1:14
is no foothold. He feels completely overwhelmed,
• 1:18
like he's drowning, and he doesn't pretend otherwise.
• 1:22
He doesn't perform. He goes directly to God with the
• 1:25
full weight of it. That honesty with God in the
• 1:28
middle of being overwhelmed is not weakness, it's wisdom.
• 1:32
It's saying, I can't handle this alone and I'm not going to
• 1:36
pretend I can. And then there's one of the most
• 1:39
powerful verses in all of Scripture for those who feel
• 1:42
judged by appearances or misunderstood by people.
• 1:46
First Samuel chapter 16 verse 7, God speaks to Samuel and says do
• 1:52
not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature
• 1:55
because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man
• 1:58
sees. Man looks on the outward
• 2:01
appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.
• 2:04
God is not evaluating you by your performance, your grades,
• 2:07
your social status or how you look in front of people.
• 2:11
He sees your heart. So here's the invitation.
• 2:15
When life brings storms, bring them to God before you bring
• 2:18
them to your social media. Respond rather than react.
• 2:22
Choose calm over conflict. Let people misunderstand you if
• 2:26
they need to, because the One who truly sees you sees
• 2:29
everything, and he's working something in you, even in the
• 2:32
  hard moments. Let's pray.
• 2:36
Heavenly Father, thank you for seeing our hearts and not just
• 2:40
our behavior when we feel overwhelmed.
• 2:42
Teach us to bring that to You before we react.
• 2:45
Help us to restrain our words when anger wants to take over
• 2:49
and to trust that you are working even in the middle of
• 2:51
our storms. Guard our hearts in our mouths
• 2:55
and help us respond with wisdom in Jesus name, Amen.
• 3:01

Now I invite you to spend time with God in today's three-year
• 3:59
Bible reading plan. Proverbs Chapter 17 Verses 25 to
• 4:04
26 World English Bible A foolish son brings grief to his father
• 4:10
and bitterness to her who bore him.
• 4:13
Also to punish the righteous is not good, nor to flog officials
• 4:16
for their integrity. Psalm Chapter 69 World English
• 4:21
Bible Save me God, for the waters have come up to my neck.
• 4:26
I sink in deep mire where there is no foothold.
• 4:29
I have come into deep waters where the floods overflow me.
• 4:32
I am weary with my crying. My throat is dry, My eyes fail
• 4:36
looking for my God. Those who hate me without a
• 4:39
cause are more than the hairs of my head.
• 4:42
Those who want to cut me off, being my enemies wrongfully, are
• 4:45
mighty. I have to restore what I didn't
• 4:47
take away. God, you know my foolishness.
• 4:51
My sins aren't hidden from you. Don't let those who wait for you
• 4:54
be shamed through me. Lord Yahweh of armies, don't let
• 4:58
those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, God of
• 5:01
Israel, because for your sake I have borne reproach.
• 5:04
Shame has covered my face. I have become a stranger to my
• 5:08
brothers, an alien to my mother's children, For the zeal
• 5:12
of your house consumes me. The reproaches of those who
• 5:15
reproach you have fallen on me. When I wept and I fasted, that
• 5:20
was to my reproach. When I made sackcloth my
• 5:22
clothing, I became a byword to them.
• 5:25
Those who sit in the gate talk about me.
• 5:27
I am the song of the drunkards. But As for me, my prayer is to
• 5:31
you, Yahweh, in an acceptable time.
• 5:34
God, in the abundance of Your loving kindness, answer me.
• 5:37
In the truth of Your salvation, Deliver me out of the mire and
• 5:42
don't let me sink. Let me be delivered from those
• 5:44
who hate me and out of the deep waters.
• 5:47
Don't let the flood waters overwhelm me, neither Let the
• 5:50
deep swallow me up. Don't let the pit shut its mouth
• 5:53
on me. Answer me, Yahweh, for Your
• 5:56
loving kindness is good. According to the multitude of
• 5:59
Your tender mercies. Turn to me.
• 6:02
Don't hide Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress.
• 6:05
Answer me speedily. Draw near to my soul and redeem
• 6:09
it. Ransom me because of my enemies.
• 6:11
You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor.
• 6:15
My adversaries are all before you.
• 6:17
Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness.
• 6:21
I looked for some to take pity, but there was none for
• 6:23
  comforters. But I found none.
• 6:26
They also gave me poison for my food.
• 6:28
In my thirst. They gave me vinegar to drink.
• 6:31
Let their table before them become a snare.
• 6:34
May it become a retribution and a trap.
• 6:37
Let their eyes be darkened so that they can't see.
• 6:41
Let their backs be continually bent.
• 6:43
Pour out your indignation on them.
• 6:45
Let the fierceness of your anger overtake them.
• 6:48
  Let their habitation be desolate.
• 6:50
Let no one dwell in their tents, for they persecute him whom you
• 6:54
have wounded. They tell of the sorrow of those
• 6:56
whom you have hurt. Charge them with crime upon
• 6:59
crime. Don't let them come into your
• 7:01
righteousness. Let them be blotted out of the
• 7:04
book of life and not be written with the righteous.
• 7:07
But I am in pain and distress. Let your salvation God protect
• 7:11
me. I will praise the name of God
• 7:14
with a song and will magnify him with Thanksgiving.
• 7:17
It will please Yahweh better than an ox or a bull that has
• 7:20
horns and hoofs. The humble have seen it and are
• 7:23
glad. You who seek after God, let your
• 7:27
heart live. For Yahweh hears the needy and
• 7:29
  doesn't despise his captive people.
• 7:32
Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that
• 7:35
moves therein. For God will save Zion and build
• 7:39
the cities of Judah. They shall settle there and own
• 7:42
it. The children also of His
• 7:44
servants shall inherit it. Those who love His name shall
• 7:47
dwell therein. First Samuel chapter 16 World
• 7:51
English Bible Yahweh said to Samuel, How long will you mourn
• 7:55
for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel?
• 7:59
Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse the
• 8:03
Bethlehemite, for I have provided a king for myself among
• 8:06
his sons. Samuel said How can I go?
• 8:11
If Saul hears it, he will kill me.
• 8:13
Yahweh said Take a heifer with you and say I have come to
• 8:16
sacrifice to Yahweh. Call Jesse to the sacrifice and
• 8:19
I will show you what you shall do.
• 8:22
You shall anoint to me him whom I name to you.
• 8:25
Samuel did that which Yahweh spoke and came to Bethlehem.
• 8:29
The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, Do
• 8:33
you come peaceably? He said peaceably I have come to
• 8:36
sacrifice to Yahweh, Sanctify yourselves and come with me to
• 8:41
the sacrifice. He sanctified Jesse and his sons
• 8:44
and called them to the sacrifice.
• 8:47
When they had come, he looked at a leab and said, Surely Yahweh's
• 8:50
anointed is before him. But Yahweh said to Samuel, don't
• 8:54
look on his face or on the height of his stature, because I
• 8:58
have rejected him. For I don't see as man sees, For
• 9:02
man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at
• 9:05
the heart. Then Jesse called AB an adab and
• 9:08
made him pass before Samuel. He said, Yahweh has not chosen
• 9:12
this one either. Then Jesse made Shama to pass
• 9:15
by. He said Yahweh has not chosen
• 9:18
this one either. Jesse made seven of his sons to
• 9:21
pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, Yahweh has
• 9:25
not chosen these. Samuel said to Jesse, are all
• 9:28
your children here? He said, there remains yet the
• 9:31
youngest. Behold, he is keeping the sheep.
• 9:35
Samuel said to Jesse, send and get him, for we will not sit
• 9:38
down until he comes here. He sent and brought him in.
• 9:42
Now he was ready with a handsome face and good appearance.
• 9:46
Yahweh said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he.
• 9:49
Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the middle
• 9:53
of his brothers. Then Yahweh's spirit came
• 9:56
mightily on David from that day forward.
• 9:58
So Samuel rose up and went to Rama.
• 10:01
Now Yahweh's spirit departed from Saul, and an evil spirit
• 10:05
from Yahweh troubled him. Saul's servant said to him, See
• 10:09
now an evil spirit from God troubles you.
• 10:12
Let our Lord now command your servants who are in front of you
• 10:15
to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp.
• 10:19
Then when the evil spirit from God is on you, he will play with
• 10:22
his hand, and you will be well. Saul said to his servants,
• 10:26
Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.
• 10:31
Then one of the young men answered and said, Behold, I
• 10:34
have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in
• 10:37
playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech,
• 10:42
and a handsome person, and Yahweh is with him.
• 10:45
Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, Send me
• 10:48
David, your son, who is with the sheep.
• 10:52
Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread and a container of wine
• 10:56
and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul.
• 11:00
David came to Saul and stood before him.
• 11:03
He loved him greatly and he became his armor bearer.
• 11:07
Saul sent to Jesse saying, Please let David stand before
• 11:10
me, for he has found favor in my sight.
• 11:13
When the Spirit from God was on Saul, David took the harp and
• 11:17
played with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was
• 11:20
well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
