- 0:31SPEAKER_01: Hi, and welcome to Books and Box Office Besties.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: I'm Wendy, and this is my co-host Kim.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Hi, Kim.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Hi, everybody.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: Before we start, let's get this disclaimer out of the way.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Books and Box Office Besties is for entertainment purposes only.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Our opinions are our own and not intended to replace professional advice.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: We may discuss major plot points, twists, and endings from books and movies.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: If you haven't watched it or read it yet, consider this your warning.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: How are you, Kim?
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: My heart is pounding.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: I'm doing just fine, Wendy.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: How are you?
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Are you crying?
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Today we will be discussing Verity, the movie, and how we feel it compares to the book.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: First, though, Kim, what's new with you?
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm in Ohio, living out of a suitcase.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: That's about it.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: How about you, Wendy?
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Well, this has really gotten to you, huh?
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: I went with my best friend.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: She's got her new glasses on, people.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: This weekend.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: She's trying to figure out where she's at.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: They're all fogged up now, too.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: I don't know how that happened.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Well, we both went this weekend to see the jury experience.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: It was at the Malts Performing Arts Center in Cleveland for a 60-minute interactive live show where we were the jury and we voted in real time on a fictional case with a moral and ethical legal dilemma designed to foster discussion.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: So how did you like it, Kim?
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: I actually was really impressed.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: I didn't expect it to be that nice.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, the setting was great.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: It was downtown Cleveland, uh part of Case Webster, a very, very old building.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: I felt like semi-official, even though it was, you know, playing out.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, I felt like my vote counted.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Um, I really enjoyed it.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: I'm so glad you asked me to go.
- 2:31unknown: Yeah.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: And I didn't know.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: How did you like it?
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: I liked it a lot.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: I didn't know what to expect because the jury experience, I mean, nobody wants to go to jury duty, but it was really cool.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: You know, we got a really interesting case.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: It involved a fatal AI driverless car accident.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: And the defendant was the CEO of the company, and it brought up like really good questions about AI in the future.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: And we got you know, since it was interactive and we, you know, answered through our phones, we got to discuss things.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: And at the end, it was the audience who decided if he was guilty or innocent, and it was it was really close.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: It was 51% that he was innocent, even though he was the CEO and he caused a he didn't really cause the fatal accident.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: So what I liked about this is in the beginning, they asked us a preview question, you know, hey, after we heard the opening remarks, do you think that the founder of the company who wrote the software is guilty or innocent?
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: And I think it was 70 some percent said, oh, he's innocent.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: But then at the closing remarks, it made it by 51% he was innocent.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: What did you think of that one?
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: I think it was it was pretty cool that they were able to sway that many people.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: Do you think that by the end of the closing remarks, do you think that people were more logical or were they more emotional with their answers?
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: Did they depend on previous cases or comments that was stricken from the record?
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Well, I feel like that they were more emotional, to be honest, because we still were sticking with the facts.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: And because we went from 70% to 51%, it made me think that people were going more with emotions.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: And they brought up a really good fact in the case when they said, you know, if electricity started fires in homes when Thomas Edison was, you know, discovering electricity and all of a sudden he was put in jail and they never went ahead with the discovery of electricity, where would we be?
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: You know, you you have to progress.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: There's things things are always going to happen.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: There's always going to be things and he did abide by all the laws too.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Like if he was shaving corners and wasn't abiding by the law or doing all the secure, you know, the security procedures and the testing that he was supposed to do by government standards, then I would have been like, oh, he's guilty because you know he went around the law.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: But he didn't.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: So then maybe what you get from this case is there needs to be maybe more security standards and high, you know, higher security standards around AI testing.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe I think we should have guardrails.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: Guardrails.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Or more guardrails than that they have than they have right now.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: But I don't think that the CEO was guilty, but because he did follow the law.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: I thought he was pretty brave to take the stand when their supposedly their expert witness um, for whatever reason was unable to show.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: So then they called the defendant and he's like, Well, yeah.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, oh my God, he's gonna shoot himself in the leg.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: But when he represented kind of himself as an expert witness, I think he did a pretty good job because I like the way he said, I don't write the law, I follow the law.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: I don't write policy, I follow policy.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: And since this AI thing is kind of new right now, not only are security measures, I'm sure, are gonna have to be put in place, uh, and I think as we advance, obviously our rules and laws are gonna have to advance to keep up with it.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: But I think you were right about, well, about everything actually.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: Um, but I I agree.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: But I think you really hit it on the nail when you said it was emotional, because one of the questions that they asked us in the middle of this, they asked us three questions.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: Uh, one of them was the judge just had a question.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: She goes, I just want to ask the jury, just want to pull the jury over here.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: I got three questions if you don't mind answering.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: Uh I forget the first one, but the second one was if it was your loved one that died because the AI hit a man on a bicycle and he died.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: If it was your loved one that died, how would you feel?
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: And I think that really swayed the jury with that question.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: I think it did too, but I don't think if it was your loved one, I think you would have a civil case.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: It wouldn't have been because this wasn't a civil this wasn't a civil case.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: This was where he was gonna go to jail for 10 years.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, if you write the code, if you write the code, are you responsible?
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh it's I don't know.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: I don't well they brought up some really good points though, too, because they said that would a person that was driving the driverless car made the same decision, we don't know, we don't know.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: We don't know if a person who was driving that would have made the same decision as that the AI did.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Because the AI could could have actually ended up killing more people.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: You you kind of had to be a good thing.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Is it better to kill one or is it better to kill five, essentially?
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: You know, exactly.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: And then they asked they asked his widow that they asked if it was him and he because he was a nurse, because you know, they explained the character and the person that you know passed.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: And they said if it was up to him and he could have killed one person or five people, what would he do?
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: And then she answered honestly, it would have been one person, you know, and she it just made for a very interesting case.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: And they have these all around the country, these jury experiences too.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: And they're all dependent on the other.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: I would love to go on another one, yeah.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: That was so interesting.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm sure they have some when we go to when we're in Texas, they probably have them around you in Austin or San Antonio or something like that.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah if you want to see a different case.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: It was uh it was it was just I recommend this to anybody who has the opportunity to go to uh go to one of these cases.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: It's interesting, it makes you think about things because nothing I think one of the things that judges said is leave your bias at the door.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: We could only work with the facts that we have.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: And another thing is one of the witnesses, the guy, okay, just to set the stage, it was two-lane traffic oncoming.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: And this guy who was approaching the driverless car was swerving, trying to get in front of the car in front, trying to get in front of the car in front because he said they got to call his daughter, something happened at her dance school.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: And but he was totally in control of the car, and he sees no reason why the AI swerved out of the way and hit the bicyclist on the right.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: But so we have that going on.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: But while the gentleman who wrote the software was on the stand, they started to throw some some extra things in there.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: He said that he used to work at a company and then he left to start his own company.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Well, his former boss said he was an outstanding employee, he worked really well, but then he started to cut some corners and they had to let him go.
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: He did not resign.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: So you start thinking about that.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: And if it really was a big company, I'm sure he's not the only one that had the final say.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, that, and I think the uh lawyer even said objection, objection, because that had nothing to do with the case they're working on right now.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: That could have been 25 years ago, you know.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: But then you also brought up a good point while we were there because you said, okay, he's a nurse and he just worked a 12-hour shift and he's exhausted and tired and driving home or riding his bike home after a 12-hour shift.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Could he have, you know, caused not caused it because I don't think he caused it, but like maybe his reactions weren't as good because he was so tired, also.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: Although you never want to place any blame on the victim, of course.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: But that was like a I thought that was a good thought too, because you know, after 12, a 12-hour shift, you are exhausted.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: But the bottom line is it's either good for like a friend's night out or it would be really great for a date night out if you're wanting to get to know somebody new because it brings up all these questions for you to discuss so you can really get to know somebody really well when you're discussing those types of things, yeah.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: You know, more than just sitting in and watching a movie or something like that.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: So you can actually have a conversation.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but yeah, that's great.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: I'm so glad you brought me.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Okay, well, we recommend it.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then we had a fun Italian dinner afterward in Little Italy, and we had a couple drinks and Ubered home.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: But it wasn't a driverless Uber.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: There was I just wanted to put that out there.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we have nothing against driverless Ubers, but with precious cargo in there, we like a driver.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: So, um, let's see.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's get to our main topic today.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Verity the movie.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: Okay, now we already discussed the book by Colleen Hoover a few weeks back, and the the movie was directed by Michael Showwalter, and this it stars Ann Hathaway as Verity Crawford, Dakota Johnson as Loan Ashley, Josh Hartnett as Jeremy Crawford, and it received a 34%.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Hear that, 34% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: The critics' first reactions are the adaptation isn't as creepy or sexy as needed to be, but might still be fun to see with a crowd.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Do we agree with that?
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: Well, given the price of popcorn and soda, no.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Let's be honest.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: Let's be honest.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: When we discussed the book, if if you listen to that podcast, and if you didn't, you should go back and listen.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: It's a great podcast on Verity.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: We said we thought that this movie had the potential to be better than the book.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: We said that on our podcast because I still believe that this movie had the potential to be better than the book.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: Was it, Kim?
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: God, no.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, no, no.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: I don't even know what I watched.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: Was it a thriller?
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: Was it just a bad movie?
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, probably.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: Um, did it have a twist at the end?
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, had a twist.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Is it twist?
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: Movies have twists.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: But we were also discussing a little disclaimer here.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: We everybody always says, oh, the book was better, the book was better.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: And that's usually true.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: The book is usually better, but that doesn't mean the movie has to be bad.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: And let's give you some examples.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: The notebook.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: I loved the notebook, okay.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: I know not everybody agrees with that.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: But the notebook was a great movie, and I did not read the book until after the movie, and I loved the book, okay?
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: I would have still loved that movie after I read the book.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: I know I would have because the movie made me want to read the book.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: If I saw this movie, there's no way I would read the book.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Because it didn't intrigue me enough to want to read the book.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: There was no psychological thrilling edginess to it.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: No?
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: And I think, Kim, you brought up a movie too that you actually read the book first and then watched the movie.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: What were you talking about?
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: Bridges over Madison Coyote, but that was so long ago.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: I cried my eyes out in the book.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: I cried my eyes out in the movie.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: And the movie was good.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Again, it wasn't the characters that I would have picked, but still the directing was really good.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: And I think 90% of the reason why this movie I think fell flat, Verity, is the director.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: I don't know what was going on in his mind.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: I really don't.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: Um, it was poorly directed.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: There was a lot of flaws that I saw.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: And I'm not even talking about parts that they missed in the book because obviously I know they're not going to have everything that's in the book that you know you expect to see in the movie, and you have to cut some things out because nobody wants to sit for three hours for a bad movie.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: But they'll sit for three hours for a good movie.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Yes, that is true.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: That is true.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, and it started out like it was gonna be really close to the book because in the beginning of the movie, we'll just call this part one.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: In the beginning of the movie, Lone is uh well, let me refrain here, backtrack a little bit.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: The movie starts out, and I think, what the heck did this scene come from?
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: She is reading to a few people, apparently in the library.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: At first, I thought, is this a school class?
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: Because you only see it from behind, and she's very slow and monotone to make sure.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Again, I'm thinking that this is a teacher here, and what and she wants the students to articulate every single word, so she's being very monotone, and then the character did this and that, and blah, blah, blah.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: Here to find out, it was a library and it was meet and greet the author.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: She only had like three or four people in there, yeah.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: But after but after that, it stuck to the movie, I think, for the first two minutes.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: First part was very true to the book.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: So if you remember in the book, there was an accident right in front of her and she got splattered with blood.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: That part was exactly true to the book, and then they went into the bathroom and the men's washroom.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Yes, and he did offer his shirt.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: It didn't look bad on her, I have to admit.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: You know, it looked well emotional.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Okay, so so I okay, I was shocked when it came to that part, to be honest, because when he took her to the men's room and she's just like immediately took off her shirt and she's scrubbing the blood out.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: And then remember, Besties, that in the book, he just takes off his shirt.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Well, in my book, I read in my mind's eye, he didn't have an undershirt on.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: So when he took his shirt off and had his undershirt on, I was like, Oh, that's not in the book, but you know, I guess that was my imagination.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: I swear they started to create chemistry at that scene.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: There was no chemistry being created in that scene.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: It may not have been chemistry.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: Well, that's sure.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: It may not have been chemistry, but there was like no interest.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: And again, in her defense, which I'm not going to defend much, you know, was she in shock or was she?
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: If she was in shock, you really couldn't tell.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: Because to me, she could have been washing out a diaper, to be honest, in the city.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: I I don't I don't mean to be mean, but there was no indication she looked the same like she was when she was reading that book at the library, you know?
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she doesn't have a lot of lot of reaction in her character in this movie at all.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: And I'm assuming that most of you saw the movie if you're listening to this, but if you didn't take a look at Dakota Johnson through the whole movie or Loan Ashley, who she's portraying, and s and tell us if you see any actual reactions on her face, any character or any anything.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: It's just it it really falls flat for for us it did anyway.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: And okay, in the book, if you remember, she had chemistry with her editor, she had had a relationship prior with her editor, and they didn't show that.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, I feel like they alluded to it.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: So if you read the book, you would sort of maybe pick up on it, but they didn't go ahead.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Oh, I was just gonna say, I think that when the editor, according to the book, when he came over with a bottle of wine, he thought, whoa, whoa, whoa, we're gonna celebrate tonight.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: And all you know, he walks in, he's familiar with her apartment, and you know, goes gets the glasses of wine and everything.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: In here, I didn't see a sense of familiarity really, and she just didn't seem like, oh, yeah, he's my boss.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: I've been working for him.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not like he had that prior relationship, it was kind of bizarre.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I like I would have expected him to like want to give her a hug and say, Hey, Loan, great job.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: Give her a hug.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: We got this, we're gonna knock it out of the park, you know?
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Like try to build that team up because he knows at this point she's getting a boatload of money, which means he's gonna get a boatload of money.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: The one thing though, she said, Aren't you in a relationship?
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: And he's like, It's just a fling.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: So you know he was like, Uh, that it doesn't matter.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: We can still, we could still move on here.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: But she was like, No, she's really nice.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: I think this one should stick.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: So she was kind of pushing him toward that relationship, but it didn't tell you that they actually had past history, which the book did.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: There was no, there was no, you know, like, hmm, I don't know.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Anyways, that fell flat.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Next disappointment, Wendy.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: Yes, next.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Let's see.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: I put that I was way more sympathetic for Verity in the movie than I was in the book.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: So in the book, I don't know if we should get to the Verity part because we didn't actually get to the we'll we'll step back a little bit here.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, step back a little bit because I think for me, the next thing that popped up is when she was driving.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: Oh, here I am on rewind again.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: In the book, Jeremy suggests that Loewen comes to the house and works in Verity's office to look at all the notes.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: There's so much notes there, he doesn't know how to sort everything out, and she's welcome to work in the office.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: And in the book, she goes to his house, and coincidentally, she can't get a room to rent because she has no money.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: So she ends up staying there at Jeremy's invitation.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: In the movie, that was part of the deal, it sounded like.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: And I don't know how he phrased it, but it was more of part of the deal.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: And you'll be staying at the house to work in Verity's office, so which actually made sense.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: I was okay with that change.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: I was not that change.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I uh stay in a stranger's house.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: Well, I guess because she was under the impression that Verity was still gonna be able, she didn't know how bad Verity wrote.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, right.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: So she thought she'd be co-writing with her, so she was fine with that one.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: But when she drove there, uh according to the book, she drives there, she and the little boy taps on the window and she gets out, starts talking, everything is fine.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: He leads her up to the house, he goes in the house and shuts the door on her.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: But in the book, he's only about five or six, you would say.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: And then she starts saying, Oh, that little brat, that little, I don't know, she probably used worse words than that, which right away kind of describes her character a little bit.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: I'm like, lady, he's only a little bit that.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: But in the movie, she was all so sweet with him and so wonderful with him.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: And I did not pick up on that, so I'm glad you brought that up.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Now, if we rewind a little bit though, more back to where they're negotiating still before she gets to the house.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: No, that's okay.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: When he wanted to talk to her privately and they left the room, he said, Oh, by the way, they're lowballing you, ask for 500,000.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: And the book he said, ask for a million.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: And I know that's just another little nitpicky thing, but it's just another thing.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Why'd they change it?
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Why uh I don't know.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'll tell you why, Wendy.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: It definitely wasn't worth a million.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: Well, that's probably the truth.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: No, I was gonna say the director didn't read the book.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, come on.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: It seems like he didn't, but I want to go back to I was very sympathetic for Verity in the movie.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: For some reason, they were making you sympathetic to Verity.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: And in the book, I I felt like that because oh no, I'm sorry.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: I was more sympathetic for Verity.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: Yes, I was more sympathetic for Verity in the movie than I was in the book.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: Because in the book, we pretty much In the book, it talked about it talked about more mean things that she did.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: She didn't want to be pregnant, she tried to give herself a miscarriage, she tried to physically kill her.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about that.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: They left out that miss the horrible miscarriage that I don't even want to talk about again.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: We talked about it in our first podcast.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll just skip that, but it's really bad.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: Just go back to the one of her kids were born with a scar because of it.
- 22:52unknown: Yeah.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: And they said, Oh no, that happens to twins sometimes, which I'm sure it does, but they inferred in the book that it was because of her.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: And in the movie, and I know this bothered a lot of people because I I actually looked on social media to see if people liked it.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: And there was a few people that liked it, the movie, believe it or not.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: But a lot of people really disliked that they went from three kids to two kids because Crew wasn't supposed to be a twin, but in the movie, he's a twin.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: Now I Kim and I discussed that, and it was like, uh, two kids, three kids, what does it matter?
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: But in the book, the three kids it really showed more of the relationship between Jeremy and Verity, and it really showed a lot of Verity's hatred toward the three children, too.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: They really brought that out in the book.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: And of course, that was left off in the movie, except unless except for the manuscript, of course, which I mean it just it did it didn't translate well for me.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, it just didn't translate.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: So they're in the house.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: We can go to the house.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: Speaking of houses, yeah.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: Speaking of houses, the house was a showstopper for me.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: Um the outside of the house looked big, it's in the middle of the woods.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Okay, that was fine, right?
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: They bought the house, they had the house.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: The house looked really grand and big from the outside, but honest to God, the inside with the rooms were all boxy and small.
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: And if my besties are, you know, have my back on this, Verity stands on a staircase, and in my mind, a very large staircase, and watches her husband and Loan make out.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: But in the movie, all these rooms are little boxy rooms, twists, turns, twists, turns.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: I'm not even sure how a wheelchair can go up and around the corners, and it's all hard squares.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: They could have actually created the set in Walmart parking lot.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's how disappointed.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: I think that's why they kept on flashing back to the house.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: No, it's really a big house.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: No, it's really a big house.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: Bull.
- 24:53unknown: Okay.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: We did not even see a we I agree.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: We did not even see a staircase in the house.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: And you know what?
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: I thought the house was so ugly, it almost looked like it was decorated in a 70s vibe.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: It was all dark.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: I yeah, well, it's woodsy.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: I get it, I get it.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: I didn't like the house.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: All the rooms were small, the house was ugly, and it didn't have as many windows to the outside.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: It was all that as you would expect.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, it's really weird because on the outside, when they show the house, it had like all glass parts.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: It was just bad.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: It was just, it wasn't the right set for the book.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: No.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: And to be honest, I kept on comparing this to another book I read they made a movie out of.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: What was it called, Wendy?
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: That everyone seems to be comparing it to the housemaid or something.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, beautiful house.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: That that house was perfect for the movie.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: They did a great job on the house for that other book, yeah.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: And the thing is, the housemaid's a lot of people.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: But the the housemaid didn't have as big actors in it, I don't believe, because Anne Hathaway is way bigger than anybody that was in the housemaid.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: But I have to give props to Anne Hathaway because she is a crazy good actress.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: I have to say, she acted so Convincing.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: Convincing.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: She acted like an author, she acted like a famous author.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, Jeremy, the gentleman who played her husband, he acted like a caring husband, a great father.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, so and they all had their appropriate props.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: In the scenes where she's seducing her husband in the beginning, she was like perfect for that.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: She's beautiful, she's talented.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: I cannot say more about Anne Hathaway.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: I feel like Anne Hathaway in the right movie, if this was scripted differently, would have been great.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: She's a great actress.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: I know, it's the director.
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: But the other thing I want to point out is they showed in the movie how Verity and Jeremy, husband and wife, how they met, how they fell in love, what their life was like.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: And you can see how it just grew and grew.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: And you can see that they were great actors.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: But in the movie, the movie was kind of dull and boring.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: I didn't see any kind of relationship growing in the movie.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: Another scene that they left out, which I thought could have been important, is the scene that they went shopping.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: The scene that they went shopping kind of explains like an ordinary day.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: They went to the grocery store, and just to make a point of it, one of the neighbors was giving her the eye and then goes up to Jeremy and goes, Oh, hi, how's Fardy?
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, I haven't seen her in a while.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: We got to get together for lunch.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: And he's like, Well, she's co-authoring a book here with Loan.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: This is Loan.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: She's oh, and then when they were walking out, he goes, Tell Frank I said hi.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: And she goes, John.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: He goes, Oh, that's right, John.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: And they get in the car, and she's like, Who's that?
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: And he goes, Oh, that's just a nosy neighbor.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Frank is the man she's having an affair with.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: But, anyways, it's yeah, her name's Patricia.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: But that just goes to point out that the community doesn't know how bad Verity is, and that's why they want to keep it that way.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: And the other thing is it goes to show how small the community is because again.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Well, I think they the oh, go ahead.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: I think the way they showed the community being small in in here is when he asked her to dinner because they went to the one restaurant.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Didn't he mention, like, oh, the one restaurant in town?
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: And I forget what kind of food it was.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: But then again, he asked her to that dinner, and I mean, I would have, if I was a director, I would have played a song, they got up and danced.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: So you can kind of think, oh, is there a love interest here?
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: Or have him stop and stare at her.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: And it's like, is he thinking about her?
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: Is he thinking about his wife?
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: And have her, have her laugh.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, who wants to go out with a mummy?
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: You know, I mean, I'm serious.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: There was no expression on her face at all.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: She sat at the restaurant with her shoulder slumped.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: It was zero chemistry, zero chemistry between these two.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: I don't even know how their relationship started.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was ridiculous.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: And the scene where Crew licks the knife.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: We kind of thought it was dumb in the book.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: We did kind of think it was dumb in the book, but yeah, in the movie it was way over the top.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: There's no way he was giving himself a tonsilectomy.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: All that happened.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: I'm just gonna stick it all the way down there.
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: And for her to sit there and watch.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: No, it's just and then I saw the jar of peanut butter sitting there, and I was like, why didn't they just give him a peanut allergy and she didn't know?
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: You know, it would have been more realistic.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: You know, I don't know.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, but it was just little things were irritating, I think, because the movie was terrible.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we didn't like it.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: Even the popcorn wasn't helping me in this movie.
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: No, no, oh my gosh, it's the first time I went to the theater.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: Remember, and you said, Oh, how's your popcorn?
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: I said stale and burnt.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: Remember, I didn't even, it's the first time I've ever gone to a movie theater and I never ate all my popcorn.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: Amazing.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: That should have been.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: No, it was the popcorn.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: It was the movie hand in hand.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Okay, so moving along over here.
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: Um Wendy, I know this is the part that you absolutely hated.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: Absolutely hated.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: How did how did uh Verity kick off here?
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: How did they get rid of Verity?
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, the death scene.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: Are we talking about the death scene?
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: Because that was one of the worst parts.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: It was so stupid.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, okay, why did they have Verity?
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: Why did they throw Verity in the lake?
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: Very I mean, okay, maybe we watch a lot of true crime and we know a little bit more about this than we we probably should.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: But okay, so she's like, I think if you didn't read the book and she ran up there because she saw him on the monitor choking Verity, everybody in the movie theater who didn't read the book probably thought she was gonna say, Stop, stop.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: No, she didn't say stop.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: She's like, You're gonna leave marks.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: Okay, we already know this happened in the book, right?
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: And I we thought in the book, she told him to what was it, aspirate her?
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: Like just yeah, yeah.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: To stick your fingers down her throat.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: That's exactly what she said.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: Aspirated, exactly.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it makes sense.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, if you gotta kill somebody.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: She was like, just cover her mouth and her nose until she stops breathing.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: And they did that, and then they threw her in the lake.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: Now, wouldn't an autopsy show that she had no water in her lungs?
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: Wouldn't they have done an autopsy?
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: Wouldn't they have wondered how she got down to the lake since she was in a comatose state?
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: Or did nobody know?
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: But the nurse knew.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: Is the nurse gonna get paid off?
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: Death scene was so irksome to me.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: I it was so fake.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: I mean, come on.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: It is so fake.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Perry Mason, Matlock, and CSI would not take the case.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: No.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: Why wouldn't have the death scene been been the same?
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: It would have been easier to have it the same way as the book.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: And then what scene bothered you, Kim, with the policeman when they were questioning them?
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Oh so they're standing in the only other room they filmed three times, right?
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: So the policeman comes and they're asking them questions and they're kind of glancing at each other.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: And so she's crying and portraying, like, I I went to bed early.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: I don't know how she ended up in the lake.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: And then he's like, Thank you, ma'am.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: And she's like, You're welcome.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: And then he turns around and he goes, ma'am, one more question.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: She's like, What?
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: I'm like, what?
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: I can't wait to hear this one.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: This is probably ha ha, I gotcha.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: Um, about the book.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Is the book gonna be coming out?
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: She's oh yeah, it'll be fine.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: It's coming out, it's gonna be the best book ever.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: Wink wink.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, to me, that was such a cheap comment.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, I are they showing trying to show the police force as small and dumb?
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: Because it came off to me as who who would what policeman would ask that during an investigation.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: What police would, unless you wanted to make a really crappy movie, you know, you're not skilled at making a movie, and you thought, oh, isn't that cute?
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: No, you know, I I think that if they wanted to show that the, you know, this is a small town, they really don't know how to handle the case, they would have been, well, I'm sorry for your loss.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: And you'd be like, what?
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: The police are just gonna close the case?
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: And that would have made you wonder, too, are they gonna investigate?
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: Because she's very famous, very well known, and she lives in an over a two million dollar house.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: And after this, it really veers off path because I found out on social media today that that there was two endings to this book.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: I had no idea.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: Did you all know that there were two endings out there to this book?
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: Some of the books had an epilogue in it that Kim and I read, and some of them didn't have that.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: And I couldn't wait for the epilogue part to be in the movie, and it wasn't, and little did I know, it wasn't even in every book.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: So which book did you read?
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: The book that ends where they're moving out of the house, and Loan is pregnant with their child.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: I think she's seven months pregnant when they're moving in the movie out of the house, and that's when they find the letter.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: But after after she finds the letter in the book, okay, it's the same way in the house.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: She finds the letter, she reads it.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: She doesn't know if she should believe it or not.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: Now, in the books, she gets rid of it.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: She flushes it down the toilet.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: In the movie, she puts it in her pocket.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: I don't even care.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: She's not going to tell Jeremy about it, right?
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: It would just hurt him because what if the letter was true, right?
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Well, in the book that we read, there was a part after that.
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: And if you listen to our podcast on Verity, you would have heard, because we went over this part, where they went for a beach day and their daughter had was born already.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: They had a girl and they took crew and Jeremy was off jogging.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: And that's, I think it was the same neighbor.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: Was it the same neighbor, Patricia?
- 35:29unknown: Yes.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: Yes, Patricia.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: That came out.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: Yes, it was because she goes, Hi, how are you?
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: And she's and she's looks over at Crew and she goes, Who's this?
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: And Crew says, That's my little sister.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: This was in the book that we read.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: And then Jeremy came back and he was was all upset that she had seen them there and told Loan to get rid of everything, to wipe every, you know, make sure there was no fingerprints, no trace of them left behind, and to take crew to the car.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: And when and she did as she was told, and she took crew to the car, and he followed that lady.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: And when he came back, he was breathing heavy and he was saying, I had to do it.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: I had to do it.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: I she saw us, she would have known.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: And you knew in the book that he killed Patricia, which made you believe, oh my gosh, he's terrible.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: It must have been in in my mind, I was like, Oh, was the letter true?
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: Is he a bad person?
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: But we read that in the book, and I pulled up the book.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: I went back because I have uh Kindle Unlimited and I had returned the book.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: So I took the book back out today, and the book I took back out did not have that ending.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: And I thought, oh my gosh, that ending was not in every book.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: So I would love to hear how many of you had that ending in their book and how many of you didn't, because I thought that ending was in every book.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: Kim and I read that ending.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: Because that's what I think.
- 37:02SPEAKER_02: I think with that ending, it made us think because she even said the last paragraph in the book was something like, oh, he killed her.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: Um because she knew too much.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: How long is it gonna be before he thinks I know too much?
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: So that makes you think, oh my god, he's a killer, right?
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: Is he when's he gonna find feel that I'm a threat?
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 37:25SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 37:25SPEAKER_02: And then you start thinking, is he a manipulator?
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: Uh why did he pick Loan?
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: Loan wasn't famous, she had no big hit books.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: She only had like three, four people at uh meet and greet the author.
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: What's going on here?
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: So you start to think that everyone's guilty, but overall, I think that the main character that was guilty was Verity for two reasons.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: One, I can't imagine, and this is for my besties out there who read the book, I can't imagine a mother who lost their child to a horrific death, a drowning, uh, is gonna write about it.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: And then you know, so she can really get some evil thoughts.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: It was an exercise her editor told her to do, you know, right through the antagonists' eyes.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: So in the manuscript, you think it's an autobiography, at least that's what you believe it is, that she killed her daughter.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: How can you write about the death of a child a month ago and then you write you killed your child if you didn't really do it?
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: I know we all grieve in different ways, but you're not gonna say, Oh, I killed Charlie over here.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think that's possible.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: The other thing is if she was innocent, I think that she would have confided in Lohan saying, Hey, you gotta help me get out of here.
- 38:47SPEAKER_02: Jeremy's a killer.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: All I want to do is get crews, get strong enough and uh wait in the book.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: She wanted to wait until she got the payment for her last royalty so she'd have money just to run away from Jeremy.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: And no, did she confide in her?
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: No.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: Did Loan know that she wasn't as bad off?
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: That she was totally aware?
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: So why did she confide in Loan?
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: Well, Kim, in the book, I agree with you 100%.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: In the book, I'm team manuscript.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: I think that Verity was the bad one.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: Although we, in if you go back and listen to our podcast, we said we felt they were all bad.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, all bad, guilty, but we loved the book, but I was like 100% team manuscript.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: In the movie, I lean a little more toward team letter because they made you feel more, they pulled at your heartstrings a little bit more for verity in the movie than they did in the book.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: That's how I feel about it.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: I think I I think I can challenge that, Wendy.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: Because in the book, it made it sound like she was more mobile because she seemed to move around a little bit more.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: She's and she got into a fight with Loan.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: Remember when Loan was so mad at her, she's like, I'm gonna get you.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: And so she was struggling, and that's when Jeremy burst into the room and said, Oh my god, what are you doing?
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: Get out of here, get out of here.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: And Jeremy kicked her out of the house in the book.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: And that's when she goes, Wait, Jeremy, wait, I gotta show you something, I gotta show you something.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: And that's when he goes, Where did you get this?
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: And then he pretends to read it and the whole bit.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: But, anyways, in the movie, if what you're saying is true, and she really wrote that, in the movie, it portrayed her having a hard time getting out of bed.
- 40:37SPEAKER_02: She doesn't know she was gonna make it.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: Where the heck did she get the paper, the pen, crawl under her bed, flip the floorboard up, and write that note?
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: Second of all, I think it should have been in a box because when Crew went in their secret little special place, Crew grabbed all his pictures out.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, Crew knew about the secret little special spot under her bed where you lift the floorboards up.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: And so Crew grabbed 20 pictures but didn't take that last little piece of paper.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: That's why I think that that letter should have been in a box.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's an interesting take.
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: I never would have thought of that.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: You really are into the details.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Maybe you should have directed.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: I would have, I would have been honored.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: I would have been honored.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: That would have, oh, I would have loved it.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: But I still felt more sympathetic toward Verity in the movie than I did in the book.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: And I'd love to hear from you all to see how you felt about it.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: In the book, I definitely was team manuscript.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: And in the movie, I can't say I was team letter or team manuscript, to be honest, because the movie didn't evoke that much emotion in me.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: No, nothing at all.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: Um, I wouldn't, I I would, I wouldn't say that I wouldn't recommend the movie to somebody as like I wouldn't.
- 41:50SPEAKER_02: I'd recommend the book.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: I would, you know, I I would say, oh, it's a it's an okay movie.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: It's not fantastic.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: Wendy, if you want to.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't see it at the theater.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: No, I wouldn't see it at the theater.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: When it comes out on like Netflix or wherever it comes out, I was like, yeah, watch the movie.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: Why not?
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: But no, I think it'll be on Netflix in another week or so.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: It's not gonna stay at the box office long.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: Hey, 34% on Rotten Tomatoes, that is not good.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: I think the takeaway is Colleen Hoover, the books are great.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: The movie, no.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: Housemaid, both are good.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: Notebook are good.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, so many, so many movies have been made just as good or almost as good as the book.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: This one did not come close.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: They missed the spot on this.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: That's yes, yes, yes, my opinion and I'm sticking with it.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: I'm sticking to that one too.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: I can't wait to hear everybody else's.
- 42:48SPEAKER_02: I I just I mean, I can go on about the director.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: All he did was face shots and a naked shot of Dakota Johnson.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: And that was that was there was no building a relationship, no thinking back on memories.
- 43:01SPEAKER_02: There was nothing.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: So so for my besties out there, save your popcorn money and soda money.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: But if you want a good read, read the book.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: And so out of out of oh what, Kim?
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: I was just gonna ask you.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: You can ask me first.
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: Go ahead, go ahead.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: All right, out of five, what would you give this movie, Kim?
- 43:24SPEAKER_02: Oh, I would give it a one.
- 43:25SPEAKER_02: Only because I like the company I was with.
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, thank you.
- 43:32SPEAKER_02: And and apparently, should have been a tip-off.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: You seem to have reserved the whole theater just for us.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: Oh no, no, I didn't.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: We went to the matinee because it's cheaper.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: Nobody wants to get up that early.
- 43:48SPEAKER_01: So there was only one other person in there, and which was nice.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: That was really nice.
- 43:53SPEAKER_02: That was really nice because we sat there afterwards with the maintenance, the vacuum crew guy talking about the movies.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: And then I asked him, I go, How'd you like the movie?
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: He goes, Oh, I didn't see it.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, not a lot of people go to the movie at 9 30 a.m.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: on a Sunday.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: So if you want the movie theater to yourself, that's when you go to the movies.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: So what would you rate it, Wendy?
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: I would probably if I was just rating it on the movie and not comparing it to the book.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: I thought you were gonna say the company you're with.
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: No, no, not I would I would give it a two.
- 44:29SPEAKER_01: And that also is for the company I was with.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'd give it a two.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: I'd give it a two out of five as a movie.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: And I might even give it a two and a half if I didn't read the book.
- 44:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, come on, Wendy.
- 44:42SPEAKER_02: Don't don't be don't be creeping up there.
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: No, a two, a two.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: But the Tony fact that I read the book makes me not like the movie.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: I did not like the movie.
- 44:53SPEAKER_02: Wendy, you sat there for over 20 minutes telling me how much you hated that death scene.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: That's ridiculous.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: So, no, you would not believe that.
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: Two and a half.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: I want to hear, Besties, what did you think of the death scene?
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: I want to hear what you thought of everything, but especially the death scene.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: Who who would why did they throw her in the lake?
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: If she was catatonic and the nurse believed she was, and the doctors believed she was.
- 45:17SPEAKER_01: How'd she even get to the lake?
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: That to me was so suspicious.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: How they got away with it, I will not know.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: I do not know.
- 45:26SPEAKER_01: I'll never know.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, they got away because it was a bad director, let's be honest.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, I feel bad that we're raking the director over the colds, but please, someone has to take the blame.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we all need a fall guy.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: It's either him or Dakota Johnson, your pick.
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: I don't care.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, really.
- 45:46SPEAKER_01: Well, that's about all we can say about the movie.
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: Uh I as you can see, we we didn't like it, but we'd love to hear your opinion.
- 45:56SPEAKER_01: We're so happy you were here to listen to us.
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: And if you want to contact us, we're at books and box office besties at gmail.com or you can contact us on Facebook and Instagram.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: At the same again, we really want to hear your opinions on this, and you sure know where we stand on it after this.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, feel free to bend.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: Have a good week, everybody.
- 46:22unknown: All right.
