- 0:54not already, to pick up a copy of my new e book, What
- 0:58Made the Golden Age Shine? And this is written kind of in response to
- 1:03a lot of questions I've gotten over the years. Most of this stuff we
- 1:07listened to here was made twenty thirty years before I was even born. So
- 1:14the questions often ask what's the appeal and what made makes the Golden Aid shine?
- 1:19I take a look at the qualities that makes Golden Age entertainment so meaningful
- 1:23even today. So it's available for your kindle as well as your Kindle app
- 1:27If you have the Amazon Prime membership, you can get it for free.
- 1:32It's what made the Golden Aide Shine? All right, folks, Well,
- 1:34let's go ahead and we'll take a listen to today's episode of Frank Race,
- 1:38The Adventure of the Diver's Loot, The Adventures of Frank Race, starting Paul
- 1:46Dubove. The War changed many things, the face of the earth and the
- 1:57people on it. People the war, Frank Race worked as an attorney,
- 2:01but he traded his law books for the cloak and tagger of the Oss.
- 2:06When it was over, his former life was over too. Adventure had become
- 2:10his business, The Adventures of Frank Race. And now we joined Frank Race
- 2:30for the Adventure of the Divers Loot. London under a heavy rush of cumulo,
- 2:42nimbus clouds, scunning thunderheads that looked as though they might knock off your
- 2:46head at any moments. I just left the embankment was hurrying across Westminster Bridge
- 2:51when Rice wed sec Mark Donovan running to catch me. For some reason,
- 2:57the sight of a New York taxi driver putt in London seemed in congret enough
- 3:00to rate a grin up. What's so funny because the guys the looped like
- 3:07a high board. Thank Yella, come up with you, Sorry, Mark.
- 3:08I was just thinking how different this is compared to ramming a cab along
- 3:13forty second Street. It's so different. Just had to hack my way toward
- 3:16Janet was worse than going for access on fight night. Squiz fload on.
- 3:21You're wheezing like a sunpump. You know. I even I almost forgot and
- 3:29Paula's marathon because a guy wants to say its voiconality named Rhodes. Lawrence Rhodes.
- 3:34Yeah, yeah, very pit pit and Cheerio wants to see you Pronto
- 3:38orposes in eighteen Squay is No, I can't take on another assignment. We
- 3:43should be getting back to New York. But I'll see Rhodes anyway. Everything
- 3:52about Lawrence Rhodes was thinned, his weight, his hair, the whispy line
- 3:57of his very blonde mustache. He looked as though he might be the operator
- 4:00of an exclusive lady shop. Actually, he served as British representative for Acne
- 4:05and Dendony and during the war had cracked a Normandy beachhead as leader of a
- 4:10tough commando units. Decent of you to come race. We feel it's imperative
- 4:14that we have an American inn on this, since it's in a better convention
- 4:16to begin with. Well, when it's a case of children losing their lives,
- 4:21not forgive me, what were you saying? I was going to say
- 4:25that, what's this about kids losing their lives. Little French lad killed aboard
- 4:30the salvage vessel Rhodes. I'm afraid you're going to have to start this from
- 4:32the beginning, of course, old habit of mine. Assuming people have previous
- 4:38knowledge of what I'm talking about, forgive me while this stems from a salvage
- 4:42operation just across the channel. But before we discuss it further, I wanted
- 4:46to meet someone. He left me for a few minutes and came back with
- 4:50a husky looking man of about fifty a manly introduced as Charles Menefee. Mister
- 4:56Menifee can tell you much more about this matter than I can race. He's
- 5:00charge of the operation. It's a cleanup job. My company secured the contract
- 5:03for dragging the harbor of Sherburne. We've been picking up the residue of stuff
- 5:08that were sunk there during the war, particularly after D Day. I happened
- 5:13to be on the vessel in question when this avert took place. Besides the
- 5:16mishafter the boy, we lost, a diver by the name of Joe Danner
- 5:20just disappeared, leaving nothing but the broken signal and airlines. How old was
- 5:26the boy and how did he happened to be aboard when he was twelve?
- 5:29Waterfront kid that had been made a sort of a mascot by the men.
- 5:33Apparently they smuggled him on the vessel for this voyage. Pretty much of a
- 5:38mix up, and no one seem to know anything about it. That brings
- 5:42up an important point phrase acme is indemnifying men if his company against all liability,
- 5:47and if this youngster died on that vessel, then we was two moreful
- 5:51obligation. But we should know if he really did die on the boat.
- 5:56Your opinion on the report will decide that, faulse what sort of accident was
- 6:00it? That's the peculiar part of it. The thing probably can't be called
- 6:03an accident at all. You see, the boy was shot to death.
- 6:14Menophie and I left Rhodes office together and stood talking on the street while waiting
- 6:17for cabs. I was to fly across the channel that evening. He would
- 6:20meet me in Cherbourg on the following day. And as we planned this,
- 6:25a car sidled up to the curb. A gleaming new sedan with the racishness
- 6:29of a destroyer. Stopped directly alongside us. An a quiet voice spoke from
- 6:33the rear seat. Don't you guys try rushing off anywhere you'll developmall hole in
- 6:40a bar maliby. And the look at him, he might have been an
- 6:43usher at your sister's wedding, even had the carnation on his lapel with the
- 6:46manner of a maestro handling a rare fiddle. He lifted the submachine gun had
- 6:50been holding in his lap Get your hooks behind your head and get in here
- 6:55with me. Should be an enjoyable ride. It's a beautiful car, a
- 7:00most beautiful car. Ain't bad for the farm. Jabb okay, Connie,
- 7:06take it easy. We don't want to have to brush off any nosy car.
- 7:11Now you're being discreet in this country the object to people who carry artillery.
- 7:16We carry what we like anywhere we go. Nothing like self confidence.
- 7:21We haven't met before, have we? I never forget a face. I'm
- 7:27Frank Race. My friend's name is I've realized I was so remount. How
- 7:34about your identity me? I'm Freddie Troy, an independent voter. I run
- 7:41a little business in my own How he is business don't pay like a Houston,
- 7:46especially over here. I'd got to take what he can get well.
- 7:50From the looks of this car, Menefee, I'll give fat odds at the
- 7:54owner of this car hasn't the slightest ideas to who's driving it at this moment.
- 7:59You're a real you have personality, right, Do you mind telling us
- 8:01what this is all about? No, I don't mind. I'm taking you
- 8:07out of the country, all right, a real old fashioned man. But
- 8:13what for some people in Sherbet? They think you're in a way. So
- 8:16I'm taking care of it. When I take care of somebody, I do
- 8:22it right. He let his own words send them a little, just enough
- 8:26to relax the vigilance that had been in his attitude for an instant. The
- 8:30nose of the submachine gun wanted upward, away from Menaphee and myself. So
- 8:33I lund sr. I didn't have to yell at Menifee was already on top
- 8:37of the drivers. The forum was strange. Now look at the don un
- 8:43May you all right? Roy, Now here's a little payment in kind.
- 8:50Race the machine gun. I'll get him doctor Cole. Hey, all right,
- 8:56Race, I think so you deflected that gun up with justin time.
- 9:00He'd have killed a dozen paper what's Troy? Troy very much they could large
- 9:03lacron well. Conditions are getting better in London. Last time I was here,
- 9:09I had a dodge bombs. This time it was just machine gun bullets.
- 9:20Sharebourg is still a disabled war venner, showing gaunt open spaces and bombed
- 9:24out buildings his mute testimony of the travail she endured. I met Menifee again
- 9:30at the Creole, one of the larger hotels. With him was a man
- 9:33and woman he introduced as Jim and Sandra Whalen. Jim Whalen worked as Menifeees
- 9:37head driver. He must have seen too many George Raft pictures, judging from
- 9:41the way he persisted in twirling a key chain all the time we talked.
- 9:45The woman slim, young, redheaded, rated seconds on any man's plans?
- 9:50Send up anything Yetri nothing but I have marked Donovan out looking for Leeds.
- 9:54You haven't met him. He stops when it comes to crying out clues.
- 9:58I want you to know answers, ending all operations for the time being.
- 10:01The local police seemed pretty well stopped by it. The four of a set
- 10:05in the lobby and watched it begin to rain outside, the conditions that turned
- 10:09the city gray and dismal, looking so coming to the effect of the weather,
- 10:13Menepee and Jim Whalen presently left to take on a few drinks. Sandra
- 10:18Whalen immediately crinkled her nose at me. At that time we had a chance
- 10:22to talk to each other. I get pretty tired of hearing nothing but diving
- 10:26and salvage. Oh what would you prefer to discuss? You and me?
- 10:31Somehow? I get the feeling that that could become rather complicated. Oh,
- 10:35I'm counting her, you might. What's the matter? Bored? I was
- 10:39until you came along, But I'm not bored now. I'm not bored at
- 10:45all. Sorry, ducky. There are certain conditions under which I never moved
- 10:48in, and this seems to involve all of them. Oh, well,
- 10:52you better tell me about it. You see, I've always been led to
- 10:56believe I was rather attracted. You're most attractive. But there happens to be
- 11:01a guy in the background, a guy by the name of Jim Whalen,
- 11:03who also happens to be my brother, your brother, your data. Go
- 11:09and ask him. I'd look pretty silly doing that. No, I'm more
- 11:13than willing to take your award for it. And now would you begin all
- 11:18over again again? More those ideas you were advancing, those very provocative ideas,
- 11:24says I've given you too much of a need to me. Let's not
- 11:28waste time with regrets. Isn't there another spot, perhaps a little music?
- 11:33I know, justice spot. Come on, we can slip away before they
- 11:37get back. Chairbourg no longer seemed gray and dreary for me. It had
- 11:41suddenly assumed the atmosphere of a Mardi Gras, a mama's parade. But at
- 11:46the daughter the hotel there came an interruption. Going somewhere that's rather obvious,
- 11:50isn't it, Sandra? This is Mark Donovan. I don't blame music going
- 11:56somewhere, but I'm afraid I gotta clark to get lost. Mark. I'm
- 12:01sure that whatever you have in mind can wait. Look, Race, you
- 12:05will probably want to flog me from here to Paris, but it won't wait.
- 12:07It's a red hot break. It's got to be handled. Now we
- 12:09go with him, raid, we can make it later, shall we say
- 12:13tomorrow at a very understanding person. I'm a very persistance see your later by
- 12:24Marcus. This lead of yours had better be good. It's good, Jo,
- 12:28Let's go where spot call a body book. It ain't the Krion a
- 12:33cRIO. Like I said, it ain't the Crillon, but it has its
- 12:37points. It definitely has its points. I ain't there something race makes you
- 12:50forget all about the rain outside? Who are we going to talk to?
- 12:54And at table in a corner? Guy in a dame is the American?
- 12:56I was telling you about it. I want to give it a knockdown to
- 12:58it. Look, I yea, I know you just left the pet,
- 13:03but ain't this girl something? She was wearing a black suit and a beret.
- 13:09She had dark eyes and honey colored hair. She was smoking a cigarette
- 13:13and a long holder, and she looked like something Renoir would have put on
- 13:16canvas. We went over and Mark made a snow on one another, identifying
- 13:20the girl as Annette. The man is Phil Benson. We had drinks and
- 13:24began a casual conversation. Benson turned out to be a paving contractor dickering with
- 13:28the city or Shareboat for some of its road rebuilding works. That's kind of
- 13:33tough. They don't want to give it to anyone but a Frenchman. I
- 13:37don't blame them in a way, but I could certainly save them a lot
- 13:39of money on nohow Annett. Mark Donovan tells me you know something about what
- 13:43occurred on that salvage boat last week. Yes, Race, I know something.
- 13:48Wouldn't want to tell me about it, would you, nice? I
- 13:52will only speak of what I know that the man was in shows of the
- 13:54book. Is it a question of money? I ars I could get it
- 13:58for No. No, I will only speak to that Mini. Then the
- 14:03men called mina fee. All right, we'll make it tonight, Sweet J
- 14:09at the Creon at eight o'clock. All right, it is all right,
- 14:20Sweet j at the Creon happened to be the apartment Mark and I were occupying,
- 14:24and I had a mena fee there. At seven thirty. He came
- 14:26in with a serious face, in the morose attitude for a couple of drinks
- 14:30to bring him to the point of unburdening his mind. Sandra, I don't
- 14:35suppose you have any idea that she and I are and gade engaged. No,
- 14:41I didn't have any such ideas. Sandra didn't say anything about it this
- 14:43afternoon. Sandra's like that restless. I was on the lookout for excipment,
- 14:48but I have hopes that. Of course, I'm sure she will that must
- 14:54be our call it I know. Come in there. This is mister Menaphie.
- 15:03Whoa and that some information? Yes, mister Menacy, I have three
- 15:09things to tell you. First that I consider you a murderer, Second that
- 15:16I am the mother of a dead child. And furtherect I know intend to
- 15:20kill you with his bits. We'll return to the adventures of Frank Race and
- 15:33just about one minute and now back to the adventures of Frank Race. Benefit
- 15:50was down, but I couldn't tell how badly he had been hurt. I
- 15:54was too involved with a twisting, writhing woman whose intent was to send more
- 15:56bullets into his body. Idiot, you're not solving anything by making a play
- 16:03like this. Give me that gun. That gun. I'm sorry you left
- 16:10me no alternative. If you're smart, you'll get out of here. Your
- 16:12police don't like people who use guns. Yep, I'm not going to hold
- 16:18you. No, get going anice? Nice? See better stay put?
- 16:30Manafee? Do I get some help here? Too? Bad? He saved
- 16:34my life by grabbing it the way you did. She had me fool right
- 16:38down on the ground. Where were you hit? It seems to be we
- 16:41have a show here. I'll pack it then I'll get you a doctor.
- 16:45Doctor. I'll take care of this myself. You've forgot to have a doctor,
- 16:48manafee, it would be turned. No, I'll take care of it
- 16:52myself. Bringing a doctor, and you're bringing the police. And I had
- 16:56enough publicity on this thing. We're likely to need the police. A girl
- 17:00might try this again. You can take care of that from me. They'll
- 17:03find a persuaded that are not at fault. I'm doing all I can to
- 17:08clean up the situation. No doctors, no police. There was no doubt
- 17:18but that Annette would be in hiding. The next morning, Mark and I
- 17:22looked up Phil Benson, the robing paving contractor. Yeah, I don't know
- 17:26where she is. Why should I tell you, guy? Or you can
- 17:29make trouble for her. Lord, don't be a dub when you ain't going
- 17:32to give her no grave. That's what's a helper, that's right, Benson.
- 17:34I'll give you my word, all right. And I wouldn't want to
- 17:38give her a bump staired. She's a widow going through a bad time,
- 17:42and I'm nuts about it. He took us to a small flat over a
- 17:48wine shop on a backstreet. Here Annette perceived us casually, as though nothing
- 17:52unusual had happened. A moment I mentioned Menaphee, her eyes filled with storms.
- 18:00I get another chance, the same thing again. But why you're not
- 18:03sure that he caused the death of your son. My son died on that
- 18:07man's book. For me, that is not Race is only trying to find
- 18:11out what really happened. He's only trying to help it. I can promise
- 18:15that Ben, if he won't go to the police, if you'll agree to
- 18:17let him alone. Yeah, why don't you relax and learn the liver game.
- 18:21Give a guy like me a chance to make things different. Me alone,
- 18:25I don't want to talk about You've got to talk about a day for
- 18:27my sake. You know how I can go about you. Just give me
- 18:32time to make one of the paving deals, and oh things will be different,
- 18:37that's all. Please let me alone. She stalked out of the room,
- 18:41and I realized the futility of trying to deal with a woman stricken as
- 18:45she had been. Benson looked stopped. I can only get a break so
- 18:49I could take her away from here. Are you having any luck that to
- 18:52the city of Sherburg. They just don't listen, and I could do their
- 18:57cement paving cheaper than anyone on a compliment. It looked as though I've got
- 19:02about as much chance as a plug bullseye take with its war time. They
- 19:08have a way of doing that. We'll see you later, Benson. Are
- 19:22you right? Remember n Hello Samma? Why aren't you gonna invite me in?
- 19:29Of course? Or are you relucant to receive the lady at this late
- 19:33now? And I think you would drink. I've already had a drink.
- 19:38I've already had several drinks. Well, you're a big girl, now,
- 19:41they shouldn't hurt you. I thought we had a date tonight. Date you
- 19:47know it did well, something came up, something I couldn't avoid men as
- 19:52they talked to you, didn't I told you I was engaged to him.
- 19:55Well, aren't you talked to you? You know you had me? Well,
- 20:00I didn't think you'd let a thing like that slow you down. A
- 20:02lot of things slow me down. That's just one of them. Virtuous man.
- 20:08Well, I hate virtuous men. That should simplify everything. Then shit,
- 20:17because after I decided I hated your I couldn't stop thinking about you.
- 20:22Butt that drunk to make a very lovely drunk story. Then I dare you
- 20:29to do something. I dare you to put your arms around me and say
- 20:33that you think I'm not tempted, put your arms around me and say I'll
- 20:41make you another drink instead. Sit down, Ducky, you're a little unstrung.
- 20:45A matter of fact, I'm getting a little unstrung myself, right,
- 20:51I know it. At this moment, I'm probably the biggest fool in share
- 20:53book. In fact, I'm surprising the very devil out of myself. I'm
- 20:59keeping it's light, Ducky, just enough glory juice to give a taste.
- 21:02Do you think menafees worth being royalty? Well, he isn't. He isn't
- 21:07worth it at all. Yeah, refresh yourself. Then you'd better go home.
- 21:10See the salvage operation. Do you know why he's not letting anybody get
- 21:15aboard that boat. I haven't the slightest idea, Ducky, Because they have
- 21:19gold, a fortune in gold gold. That sounds a little fantastic sunder.
- 21:27They found the plane on the harbor bottom while they were grabbed, a Royal
- 21:32Air Force plane that had been shot down during the war. You've been carrying
- 21:37gold occupied plants to pay agents who wouldn't work for paper money. Yes,
- 21:41yes, they did that during the war. That's why the child, Yes,
- 21:47you happened to be a boy that day and someone shot him to keep
- 21:49him quiet. That's why that diver returned up. Miss j're donna. Doesn't
- 21:56that a sander? But did? Why didn't Menafee just take the golden clear
- 22:00off? Because he can't find it, that's the joking. It's somewhere on
- 22:06the boot, but he can't find it. Either the boy or that diver
- 22:10hit it before. They were moved everywhere for that, but he's been looking
- 22:15for the chest it was founded. If I could get a board, just
- 22:21how drunk are you sounder? I'm pretty thanking. I'm not, teacher,
- 22:29I'm not If you could get a board, do you think you know where
- 22:33it is? Let's go out to that vessel, Saunder. Let's go out
- 22:41just for the ducks of it. Can you see well enough to hold your
- 22:51course? Mark? Kid? And I ain't seeing my way. I'm feeling
- 22:53it is. What a break We hit almost alongside the ladder. Get the
- 23:02bower around, Mark, all right? Sober I watch a step with him?
- 23:08To stare with a fucking im palatine. There's a light. Ay,
- 23:14come on, you know it could be walking right into something. Here's something
- 23:19rough and tough. You can stop right now, pal, you've already walked
- 23:25into it. It was Freddy Troy, the killer I'd met in London,
- 23:29and the light shafting passed an open bulkhead. I could see that under one
- 23:32army cradled the bag of some sort, while at the same time he held
- 23:34a gun on us. Well, well, but ain't the chairman met in
- 23:40England? You go round button into all kinds of things, don't you.
- 23:44You don't seem as well equipped as you were last time, Troy. Then
- 23:47it was a Tommy gun. Now it's just a forty five. That's enough
- 23:49for this job. Get back against the Wallas. He's going to shoot us.
- 23:55I just guess it'sisted. That's fine enough, Punk, I mean me,
- 24:00yeah, you now, folks, I'm sorry, But Mark, how'd
- 24:10you get that hand in your pocket? It wasn't raging for cigars, Junior.
- 24:14You had to do it. It was him or us. Lady can
- 24:17put music in a minutes. Look that bag, he dropped it and spilling
- 24:23gold coin. We'll have a look at that later. First, let's see
- 24:26if we can do anything called Troy. But I'm afraid we're just wasting that
- 24:29time. Park was right. It was a case of too much c too
- 24:33much darkness. So we turned back to the lighted cabin and here it's the
- 24:40watchman. He's dead, shot by Troy. Oh, I guess I won't
- 24:45have to feel so bad. Let's look look where the coins had been hidden.
- 24:52What do you know with a fire horse? But this is only part
- 24:56of it, a small part. We're too late. They've been carrying it
- 24:59away. Yes, they've been carrying it away. But I've got a small
- 25:02hunch that I know where we might find it. They were both at the
- 25:11flat, and I got the feeling that he'd been talking to her again about
- 25:14going away. From the look of her, she hadn't been too responsive to
- 25:17his words. Hello, Race, what did you want to tell? Money
- 25:21in Itte? A lot of money, money that caused the death of your
- 25:23child, killed my booty, Benson, would wouldn't you? Benson? Hey,
- 25:30what are you talking about? I'm talking about a paving contractor calling himself
- 25:34Benson, who's really a deep seed diver by the name of Joe Donna.
- 25:37How long have you known this man? In it? Only a few basic
- 25:42yes, he came to you so he could keep in touch with what was
- 25:45going on. It makes a grim thought, Benson courting the kid's mother after
- 25:48what happened. Crazy, you tripped yourself in a couple of ways. But
- 25:52one thing. No real paving man would say cement when he actually meant concrete.
- 25:56But you were authentic enough when you mentioned the bull's eye today, because
- 26:00that's the term a lot of divers used for the eye pieces and their helmets.
- 26:03You and Freddie Troy were in this together, weren't your daughter. You
- 26:07were the diver who brought up the chest of coins, which you knew would
- 26:11be confiscated by the government, so you took advantage of the excitement and hid
- 26:15the stuff. And you murdered that boy because he happened to see you,
- 26:18and you made it look as though you didn't kill yourself, so you can
- 26:22hide out and pick up the coins later. A good food. Ask him
- 26:26to open that bag he has at his feet, and I'm not opening anything.
- 26:30I'm just going out of here. Don't go for that Gunnett. I
- 26:32know you've got one, but don't go for it. Crazy, he stopped
- 26:38me. You let him get away. He won't go far. Not in
- 26:42France, and the bank still there. Baby didn't get away, but it
- 26:45killed him. You stopped me, and right now you hate me for it.
- 26:52But after a while you'll be glad I did. After a long while,
- 26:56you'll be very glad. The Adventures of Frank Race, starring Paul Dubove
- 27:19with Tony Barrett as Mark Donovan, comes to you from Hollywood. Others heard
- 27:23in tonight's cast were Lillian Bayeth Wilms, Herbert Paul McVeigh, Michael Anne Barrett,
- 27:30and Herbert Butterfield. This series is written and directed by Buckley Angel and
- 27:34Joel Murcott. The music is composed and played by Ivan Ditmar. Be sure
- 27:40to be with us again this time next week for another dramatic chapter in the
- 27:44Adventures of Frank Race. Art Gilmore speaking. This is a Brucel's production.
- 28:23Welcome back. Well, I don't We've got a lot of complaints about Race
- 28:30from my listeners. First time I've heard anyone refer to him as virtuous in
- 28:37that regards, But I think in this case it definitely fit with the character.
- 28:42One thing I think some history writers need to watch is the resolution of
- 28:48the case where it's well, somebody of that occupation would not have said this,
- 28:55or they would have said that can get over used. I remember this
- 29:00than doing this using that same sort of clue that they used today in one
- 29:04of the last Tom Collins episodes. Well, now we turned to an email
- 29:10I received from Bill on that sort of on that topic, I just listened
- 29:15to the first Frank Race episode starring Paul Dubov. I have to disagree with
- 29:19you about the voice quality differences between Tom Collins and Dubov. In my opinion,
- 29:25mister du Bob's voice was much clearer and easier to understand. Frequently it
- 29:30seemed to me that Tom's Tom Collins was mumbling. I would turn up the
- 29:33volume on my headphones and still not be able to understand what he was saying.
- 29:37In contrast, I understood every word that Paul d Bob said in the
- 29:42Adventure of the Green to Blue. Just my two cents and thanks so much,
- 29:51Bill. And I wasn't necessarily saying that Collins was better objectively, just
- 29:57that I was boring. I think more used to Collins's voice. Clearly,
- 30:03both of them are strong actors. I always thought there was something debonair and
- 30:11adventurous in the way that Collins delivered his lines, I'd be interested on I'll
- 30:18put a pull up on Facebook ask listeners which Frank Race do you prefer.
- 30:22We've now had three episodes with Paul duvov as Race, so we've got some
- 30:29basis for comparison. Here then turned to an email from Kevin who rides High.
- 30:36I'm writing again to say how much I'm enjoying both your Great Detectives and
- 30:38Dragnet podcast. I'm listening via iTunes and going back as far as it goes.
- 30:45I've heard every episodes of Great Detectives now, and I'm very close to
- 30:48catching up on Dragnet. As others have mentioned, this is a mixed blessing
- 30:52since it means I have to wait for new shows, but that's okay.
- 30:55He goes on, I ask a question relevant to Race ivocable questions. This
- 31:00one is not directulated to the podcast or detective shows in particular, but I
- 31:06figured you might have some information. It seemed that many syndicated shows, instead
- 31:10of leaving a five to ten seconds spread for commercials, played a one minute
- 31:15piece of music. Did they expect an answers to read commercials over the music
- 31:19or was it done to keep the program link consistent if commercials weren't used,
- 31:22or was there another reason. This seems to happen consistently in such shows as
- 31:29The Lone Ranger, The Green Horn and Final Vans, The Avenger Five Minute
- 31:33Mysteries, and I think even Frank Race, although I don't know if it
- 31:36was original or added in later copies. Also, any idea what the waltzy
- 31:41little song during the Avengers break is sure doesn't fit the show at all.
- 31:45I've never listened to The Avengers, so I can't tell you. I think
- 31:49your explanation about keeping show links consistent if, for example, of shows not
- 31:56able to get a sponsor for particular week, I think that that is probably
- 32:04the best explanation. It's not the reading overpart. We don't have, as
- 32:08far as I know, any episodes of Frank Race that have the commercials in
- 32:13them, some of the local inserts. There are some radio programs where there
- 32:17exist copies of the radio programs with some of the local commercials inserted, and
- 32:24in those cases they basically take out the long musical bridge if they're not able
- 32:30to get the commercials, or because there are multiple segments. If you say
- 32:36they're selling spot ads and they don't get an ad for every spot. Then
- 32:42they've got those musical bridges instead. A good question, and thanks for listening,
- 32:46Kevin. All right, well that'll do it for today. We will
- 32:50be back tomorrow with a life in your hands, and then join us back
- 32:54here next Monday for another adventure of Frank Race. And be sure and let
- 32:59us know on Facebook which Frank Race you prefer, Paul Devov or Tom Collins.
