Transcript
- 0:30what's going on everybody
- 0:32welcome to lunch with the
- 0:34Clydesdale today I have my
- 0:36good buddy Jay Birch here
- 0:37in the room and it looks
- 0:40like Andrew Sten is just
- 0:43may have some video issues
- 0:45we're coming we're coming
- 0:47maybe we're coming we will
- 0:50patiently await his arrival um
- 0:56But we are here to do top
- 0:57five Tuesday and top five
- 1:00Tuesday this week is going
- 1:01to be the top five hardest
- 1:06movements to judge at both
- 1:08an in-person competition
- 1:10and an online video review.
- 1:15So once Andrew gets in,
- 1:17we'll talk about that.
- 1:19There's a ton of news going
- 1:20around the space right now.
- 1:23And Jay,
- 1:24we're trying to mute you while I
- 1:25just talk for a second.
- 1:31Um, and so, uh, there's a ton of news.
- 1:34We're not going to get into
- 1:35a lot of that today, uh,
- 1:37because of this topic today,
- 1:40but Emma Lawson has joined brute, um,
- 1:44the WFP qualifiers end tonight.
- 1:48And, uh, and so, yeah,
- 1:52Andrew's having a few technical issues.
- 1:54Uh, we will hope,
- 1:55hopefully he can get those
- 1:56rectified soon.
- 1:58Um,
- 1:59So we have Emma Lawson going to Brute.
- 2:01We have the qualifiers done today.
- 2:04We have Tierwater Palooza
- 2:07SoCal has announced their
- 2:09dates for this fall.
- 2:13Lots of stuff going on.
- 2:15I also listened to the Rich
- 2:16Froning podcast,
- 2:17which actually I have a
- 2:19really cool question I want
- 2:20to ask of you guys.
- 2:23But we'll probably do that
- 2:24tomorrow when we have a
- 2:24little bit more time.
- 2:26So...
- 2:28Andrew, if you can hear me,
- 2:30go ahead and log out and
- 2:31try to log back in one more time,
- 2:34if you can, and see if that works.
- 2:37And hopefully we can get you back in here.
- 2:42So, Jay Burch, I'm going to unmute you.
- 2:46What I wanted to ask you is,
- 2:50you have judged in some cases like TFX,
- 2:54you do a lot of judging
- 2:55around local comps.
- 2:57How long have you been
- 2:59judging and at what competitions?
- 3:05I've judged for five years.
- 3:07Can you hear me?
- 3:08Yeah, I can hear you.
- 3:12I've judged for five years.
- 3:13The majority of what I've
- 3:15done has been with TFX.
- 3:16I have judged one of the
- 3:21Mayhem competitions up in
- 3:23Amarillo this last summer, which was
- 3:26which was an interesting
- 3:28thing because I did it as
- 3:29part of the AFJ team,
- 3:33the association of fitness judges,
- 3:35which was pretty,
- 3:36that was pretty insightful.
- 3:39And so I really enjoyed doing that.
- 3:41And then I've done some team
- 3:43qualifier competitions with
- 3:46TFX that weren't the main
- 3:49main competition.
- 3:54Do you have,
- 3:54are you going to be on the
- 3:55docket for any comps this year?
- 3:59So I'm not for sure how to work out,
- 4:03but I am supposed to go to
- 4:06TFX in Oklahoma City.
- 4:09Okay, cool.
- 4:11And so, you know, I'm still,
- 4:14there's some of the
- 4:17competitors there that,
- 4:19the competition is not
- 4:21necessarily going to take
- 4:22them to the games.
- 4:25And so it's just within the invitational.
- 4:27So that might be who I'm
- 4:28judging rather than some,
- 4:31rather than some of the top tier athletes,
- 4:33if the stipulation of
- 4:35having somebody with an L one is,
- 4:39is part of everything that
- 4:44I've seen so far,
- 4:46the only re the only need for an L one,
- 4:49is for those that are doing
- 4:51it in an affiliate,
- 4:52that are doing their
- 4:53semifinals in an affiliate.
- 4:54Yeah.
- 4:58So what made you want to become a judge?
- 5:02So just watching competitions,
- 5:06doing some online comps myself,
- 5:08whenever I first started doing CrossFit.
- 5:13And, you know,
- 5:14I kind of talked with some people and,
- 5:15you know, talked about, you know,
- 5:17how I can be more involved.
- 5:18And of course,
- 5:19Rogue was one that I really
- 5:20wanted to be involved with.
- 5:22As you know,
- 5:23it's very difficult to be a part of that.
- 5:25But I wanted to figure out
- 5:29how I could be more of a
- 5:30part of the community.
- 5:32Having been a former coach
- 5:33and also been a referee for
- 5:36like flag football games in college,
- 5:38intramural sports and stuff like that,
- 5:41I just thought it might be
- 5:42a good opportunity.
- 5:43And so I threw my name in
- 5:46the hat and got picked to judge at TFX,
- 5:49Um,
- 5:50it's a great group to work with and
- 5:52I've always, um, and I continue to enjoy,
- 5:56you know,
- 5:56looking at the methodology from
- 6:00the sports side through that,
- 6:03through that lens.
- 6:04And it's, you know, as you know,
- 6:05you've done it before.
- 6:06It's not an easy job, you know, it's,
- 6:08it can be, it can be tough, but you know,
- 6:12if it, if it wasn't for the,
- 6:14for the judges and all the
- 6:15volunteers and everybody
- 6:16that comes together,
- 6:18the sport itself wouldn't even be a sport.
- 6:20So, yeah,
- 6:23I'm spending my time in that way.
- 6:26Yeah, it's, uh,
- 6:28I'll give a little bit of
- 6:28my background as Andrew's trying,
- 6:30still wrestling with the, uh,
- 6:33technical difficulties.
- 6:34Um, what,
- 6:38so I started as a volunteer and I
- 6:39didn't start as a judge.
- 6:41I started, uh, in more of like, uh,
- 6:46special needs kind of thing
- 6:49where I just ran to
- 6:50wherever the gopher needed
- 6:51to go to get the case of
- 6:53water or to hand out this or to do that.
- 6:56And then I started working
- 6:57security at a lot of the
- 7:02regionals in the teens.
- 7:04And then I ended up
- 7:05volunteering at the games
- 7:07on the equipment crew for
- 7:09the outdoor field.
- 7:11Um, and then I wanted to be a judge.
- 7:15And so, uh,
- 7:18I talked to Sue Burton who is a
- 7:20big in the volunteer world
- 7:22and she kind of coached me
- 7:23on what I needed to do to
- 7:24prep myself and to prep my resume,
- 7:27to be able to judge on the
- 7:29upper level of stuff,
- 7:31went through all of that.
- 7:33Um,
- 7:34and ended up judging at the
- 7:36the regionals um and then
- 7:38from there I got Rogue um a
- 7:41couple other big events um
- 7:44probably the most fun
- 7:45weekend I've ever had is
- 7:47the coveted year of Rogue
- 7:48when they did the online
- 7:49competition and I got to be
- 7:52Saxon panchex um judge for
- 7:55that which was really
- 7:57awesome um so uh that was a lot of fun
- 8:04Yeah, that would have been a cool time.
- 8:08Luckily,
- 8:09I have had the opportunity to work
- 8:11with lots of upper level games judges,
- 8:14rogue judges.
- 8:16And so that's been a great
- 8:18learning experience for me, too.
- 8:21Yeah.
- 8:24So for me,
- 8:25my perspective on judging movements,
- 8:27there's two things,
- 8:28and we're not going to focus on these,
- 8:30but there are things that
- 8:31make it harder to judge in
- 8:33person for sure.
- 8:34And that is how much space
- 8:36you as a judge have,
- 8:37whether there's a broadcast going on.
- 8:40Do you have to avoid cameras?
- 8:41Do you have to be out of the way?
- 8:43Do you have to be out of the
- 8:45way of spectators?
- 8:47uh so with all of that that
- 8:52makes things difficult I
- 8:53remember at the two
- 8:54thousand eighteen regionals
- 8:55there was a handstand
- 8:56push-up part of the workout
- 8:58they had twenty people
- 8:59across ten lanes and the
- 9:01space under the rig to get
- 9:03near the wall to see the
- 9:04handstand push-up was very very difficult
- 9:08made that movement very hard to judge.
- 9:11But what we're going to talk
- 9:12about is just overall,
- 9:15when you're judging somebody,
- 9:16what are your top five
- 9:18movements that are the hardest to judge,
- 9:21meaning hardest to make the call on?
- 9:23Right.
- 9:26So, looks like Andrew went off again.
- 9:32He's going to try a
- 9:33different mode of getting in.
- 9:37And I'm running a little slow.
- 9:38It's my wife is in the back
- 9:39also using part of the Internet.
- 9:41So I apologize.
- 9:44But so some of mine overlap
- 9:47and I figure I'll go start
- 9:48with number five on my list
- 9:50was double unders.
- 9:53And in person,
- 9:54it's not the movement that's
- 9:56necessarily the issue.
- 9:57It can be sometimes with
- 9:59everything going on around
- 10:00you losing count.
- 10:04That can be difficult with double unders.
- 10:07I think the hardest part of
- 10:10double-unders is
- 10:11communicating with the athlete.
- 10:15Because by the time you get
- 10:16out what you want to say,
- 10:17they're already like ten
- 10:18reps past what you just said.
- 10:21Yeah.
- 10:22And then they stop.
- 10:24They get frustrated.
- 10:25You get frustrated.
- 10:28There he is.
- 10:28I'm on my phone.
- 10:32Computers aren't working very well today.
- 10:36So we're on Jay Birch's
- 10:37number five in-person
- 10:40hardest movements to judge.
- 10:41All right.
- 10:43I heard him say double unders.
- 10:44He did.
- 10:48You want to finish?
- 10:48And we'll go to Andrew.
- 10:53Oh, I was just going to say, yeah,
- 10:55you know, the athlete gets frustrated,
- 10:57you get frustrated.
- 10:58And then I guess it was year before last,
- 11:01we had to judge triple unders.
- 11:05Which, you know, ensuring that, you know,
- 11:08you get three swings and
- 11:10because you get used to that sound of,
- 11:13you know.
- 11:16Who did triple unders?
- 11:18TFX.
- 11:18That's it.
- 11:26So, Andrew, what's your number five?
- 11:29I went with overhead squats.
- 11:32Okay.
- 11:34Mostly because, I mean, it's,
- 11:37it's a light overhead squats because you,
- 11:40there's a big controversy a
- 11:42couple of years ago at
- 11:42Rogue where they had very,
- 11:45they had light overhead
- 11:46squats and when top athletes move quickly,
- 11:49they do not extend the hips.
- 11:53They're,
- 11:54like that and not that and
- 11:56it's and honestly it's it
- 11:58and honestly it doesn't
- 11:59even matter sometimes the
- 12:00weight people don't stand
- 12:02up they don't stand their
- 12:04extend their hips on
- 12:05overhead squats they think
- 12:07they are but they don't so
- 12:10yeah and because they're
- 12:11trying to balance weight
- 12:12over their head the natural
- 12:14the natural inclination is
- 12:16to lean forward a little
- 12:17bit so it makes it harder
- 12:19to extend the hips yeah
- 12:23So it makes sense,
- 12:25but I had a discussion with a little,
- 12:30with an athlete friend of
- 12:31mine who his deal had to do
- 12:35a lot with anything where you're,
- 12:38you're having to go to
- 12:39depth on something and
- 12:41whether or not it should be,
- 12:44whether the standard should
- 12:45be completely or whether you leave it,
- 12:48you know,
- 12:50to where it's more of the
- 12:51judge's decision on what's
- 12:53complete and what's not complete.
- 12:56Every competition will have
- 12:58their own standards and
- 13:02what they're looking for.
- 13:02So that's one thing I wish
- 13:04they would explain when
- 13:05they're streaming competitions.
- 13:08If you see people post online, they go,
- 13:10they aren't doing this.
- 13:10They aren't doing this.
- 13:11Like, well,
- 13:11we weren't supposed to be
- 13:13looking for that.
- 13:14Exactly.
- 13:15Yeah.
- 13:16Yeah.
- 13:16That's the thing.
- 13:17You know,
- 13:17that's the thing is people don't
- 13:18always understand.
- 13:20what you as the judge within
- 13:22the competition have been
- 13:26briefed on what to look for.
- 13:28Right.
- 13:30What blows my mind is they
- 13:31don't let media into athlete briefings.
- 13:36Yeah.
- 13:37Especially the broadcast team.
- 13:39Yeah,
- 13:39they need someone from broadcast in
- 13:43there so they know what the
- 13:44judges are looking for.
- 13:46Exactly.
- 13:47And they know the standard
- 13:48that's supposed to be met
- 13:49so that they're not
- 13:51second-guessing a judge for
- 13:54no reason at all.
- 13:54Right.
- 13:57All right, let's go number four.
- 14:00For me, it was cleans.
- 14:06And so elbows and hips and knees.
- 14:11I don't know if you saw the
- 14:12latest Hiller's video on Tia and Rich and
- 14:16I did get the opportunity
- 14:18this summer to judge Rich,
- 14:19and I can kind of see,
- 14:21because he was doing cleans
- 14:22on what I was judging him on,
- 14:25and it's him and Luke.
- 14:27And he is so fast,
- 14:30which that's the other thing,
- 14:31is judging in person,
- 14:33the speed with which some
- 14:34athletes move is just phenomenal.
- 14:38But you get it in that,
- 14:41to looking at an athlete and
- 14:44They could be extended in
- 14:47their knees and hips,
- 14:49but because they're on
- 14:51their way up from already
- 14:52having their elbows under the bar,
- 14:55that they then start to
- 14:56move out from underneath the bar.
- 14:58And so everything is not together.
- 15:02And that can be kind of difficult.
- 15:07Andrew, number four.
- 15:09My number four was double unders.
- 15:10Okay.
- 15:12Yeah.
- 15:14I mean, sometimes you get so many that,
- 15:18you know, your mind starts to go.
- 15:21After about four, after about fifty,
- 15:24it starts to, you know,
- 15:27like at Syndicate last year,
- 15:28I think we had to do a
- 15:29hundred per athlete.
- 15:32And sometimes when they would stop,
- 15:36you know, you're like,
- 15:36you tell them a number and they're like,
- 15:38no, it's like, no,
- 15:39that's the number you're on.
- 15:40Yeah.
- 15:42Yeah.
- 15:43You're, you're, you're on this number.
- 15:44Just keep going.
- 15:44Just.
- 15:45Yeah.
- 15:47Yeah.
- 15:48Dropping, you know, they,
- 15:49they taught us drop the
- 15:50finger to know what of the
- 15:52tens you're on.
- 15:54Just worry about the singles.
- 15:57But I, like I said in the lesson,
- 15:59communication with the
- 15:59athlete is the hardest part
- 16:00of a double under so fast.
- 16:03By the time you get it out, they're past.
- 16:06Yeah.
- 16:09So that's cool.
- 16:09Double unders the match.
- 16:11Let's go to number three.
- 16:15Legless rope climbs.
- 16:18And the reason that I say
- 16:20legless rope climbs is in person,
- 16:23one of the things that you
- 16:23have to really watch for is
- 16:25as they're going up the rope,
- 16:27they'll start to do that
- 16:28kip thing with their feet,
- 16:32and they'll clench with their legs.
- 16:36And that can be,
- 16:37if you don't know to watch for it,
- 16:40It can be an advantage to
- 16:41the athlete sometimes.
- 16:43Yeah.
- 16:43It's not as strict.
- 16:48Yeah, sometimes that's tough.
- 16:50It's hard to tell sometimes
- 16:51if it's intentional,
- 16:53like they're doing it to,
- 16:55or if it's just like their
- 16:56legs happen to come together,
- 16:58and it's a fine line.
- 17:01And it's really close at the touch.
- 17:06When they're reaching for the touch,
- 17:07a lot of times is when that
- 17:09clinch will happen.
- 17:09Yeah.
- 17:10And which comes first
- 17:12because that makes a
- 17:12difference whether rep or no rep.
- 17:15Yeah.
- 17:16Did they touch and then
- 17:17clinch or did they clinch and then touch?
- 17:20Yep.
- 17:22Andrew, what do you got for number three?
- 17:24Number three for in-person,
- 17:27any four-person synchronized movement.
- 17:32So the easiest one like is,
- 17:35is anything with the worm.
- 17:36Cause then if you're gonna
- 17:37have a team competition,
- 17:38you always throw a worm in there,
- 17:39you know, any,
- 17:40any kind of mostly
- 17:42squatting with the worm.
- 17:43Now it's, you're trying to watch four,
- 17:45four butts and then four hip creases.
- 17:48And sometimes they're like, you know,
- 17:49get the little wave.
- 17:51Um, but then the game,
- 17:53sometimes they'll throw in, Oh,
- 17:54you're going to look at
- 17:55four person synchronized muscle ups.
- 17:58That was fun.
- 18:00And then they had four
- 18:01person synchronized double unders.
- 18:05That was, that was just,
- 18:07that was just like, you're just like, uh,
- 18:10you're just guessing at that moment.
- 18:12Yeah.
- 18:12You're just,
- 18:14you're watching one person and you can,
- 18:16you can kind of see the
- 18:17other three when they get out of,
- 18:19out of sync.
- 18:21No, it's just like, Oh, so four,
- 18:25four person secret movements.
- 18:27This is like super, super tough.
- 18:30Heidi Krum comes in,
- 18:31doesn't matter if it's
- 18:32intentional or not.
- 18:33It's still a no rep,
- 18:34whether you didn't mean to, or you did.
- 18:37And I think she's talking
- 18:38about the clinching on.
- 18:39Well, it's that, that,
- 18:42that's where it comes in to
- 18:43play where the standards for the, what,
- 18:46what the,
- 18:47what the head judges tell you to look for,
- 18:50for, you know, if it's, if, if,
- 18:53if it's a quick clinch
- 18:54where it's like that,
- 18:55the lakes happen to come together.
- 18:57You know,
- 18:59is it giving them an advantage
- 19:01right there,
- 19:02or are they clinching to hold?
- 19:05You know,
- 19:07that's where the judge discretion
- 19:09comes into play.
- 19:12Yeah,
- 19:13I think that's where things get messy
- 19:15at the highest levels, right?
- 19:17Yes.
- 19:18Yeah.
- 19:19It really, it,
- 19:21you need to have a more
- 19:22black and white line for that,
- 19:25for the judge to be in the
- 19:26right position to succeed.
- 19:30And it's really fun.
- 19:30Like when, when doing Legos, when they,
- 19:32when they start to turn on the rope,
- 19:35you're on one side and they
- 19:36turn the other way.
- 19:37You're like, I can't see them.
- 19:38Yeah.
- 19:39So.
- 19:43All right, so we're going to,
- 19:45and Heidi says, not really,
- 19:47no clinch at all.
- 19:48I think that's the black and
- 19:49white it needs to be.
- 19:51A lot of times you do a comp
- 19:52where people don't realize
- 19:54that if the judge isn't
- 19:55given a very understood, strict standard,
- 19:59black and white,
- 20:00it puts the judge in a very bad place.
- 20:04Because if you don't,
- 20:06one judge interprets it one way,
- 20:08one judge interprets it another way,
- 20:09and that's where you get
- 20:10the big controversy.
- 20:15Um,
- 20:16and because Jay Burch looks wise and
- 20:18fatherly,
- 20:19we're going to go with number two.
- 20:21All right.
- 20:21So number two for me is
- 20:23handstand pushups because
- 20:27you're having to watch the athlete,
- 20:30make sure that they lock the elbows out,
- 20:32make sure that they're, you know,
- 20:34stacked through their hips, knees,
- 20:36and their feet are on the wall.
- 20:37And I mean,
- 20:38it's just a whole series of
- 20:39things to have to,
- 20:42to make sure that are done properly.
- 20:44in order for that rep to count.
- 20:49Yeah.
- 20:49When, back when I first was judging,
- 20:52it was the don't allow the
- 20:54Brooke Wells technique.
- 20:55And that is the,
- 20:56the butt kind of being close to the wall.
- 20:59Um,
- 21:00and the best description that I ever
- 21:02was given was if you flip
- 21:04them right side up and they
- 21:06were pushing a barbell overhead,
- 21:08would they be stacked from
- 21:10front to bottom, top to bottom?
- 21:11Right.
- 21:12Yeah.
- 21:13Um,
- 21:15And so that helped me a ton
- 21:17understand that you really
- 21:18can't extend that butt out
- 21:20while you're doing a handstand pushup.
- 21:23Yeah.
- 21:24Yeah.
- 21:24It's just, it's an overhead press.
- 21:26So this is an overhead squat.
- 21:29They're just inverted.
- 21:30Right.
- 21:31Flip them right side up.
- 21:32Would they be?
- 21:34Yeah.
- 21:37What's your number two, Andrew?
- 21:38My number two is similar.
- 21:39It's wall walks.
- 21:42Um, and mostly it's, it's, it's the,
- 21:46you know, they tell you, okay, feet can't,
- 21:48hands can't move until the
- 21:49feet are off the wall or
- 21:50off the ground or the feet
- 21:52have to be on the wall
- 21:53until the hands touch the tape.
- 21:55Well, then you're,
- 21:55you're trying to look this
- 21:57way and that way at the same time.
- 22:01you're trying to watch the
- 22:02hands on one side,
- 22:03but also trying to watch the,
- 22:05make sure the feet are over here.
- 22:06It's like, it's,
- 22:08it's really difficult to
- 22:09watch two spots at the same time,
- 22:11even though you use peripheral vision,
- 22:12it's, and normally it's a,
- 22:15it's a bang bang.
- 22:16You know, it's a, it's,
- 22:17it's a really difficult standard to,
- 22:21to try to, it's easier on the way up.
- 22:25I think on the way down, it's like, just,
- 22:27just have, just come down,
- 22:28hands on the tape.
- 22:29I don't care what touches first.
- 22:33As long as you finish lying
- 22:35flat on the ground with
- 22:36your hands on the tape and
- 22:37feet on the ground,
- 22:38that should be the standard.
- 22:40Yeah,
- 22:41and especially someone moving like
- 22:42Colton Mertens does on a handstand.
- 22:44That video, I watched that on YouTube.
- 22:49was it on savan on kill
- 22:51taylor I'm like watch I'm
- 22:52watching those I'm watching
- 22:54those wall box I'm like
- 22:55there's no way I could I'd
- 22:57be sitting there going
- 22:58that's like he was like
- 22:59doing a burpee he was so
- 23:00fast yep all right we're to
- 23:05the number one my number
- 23:08one is wall balls hate them
- 23:11hate them hate them because
- 23:13no one goes adept yeah
- 23:15Because nobody goes to depth
- 23:18and then it's a matter of
- 23:20where the ball hits the target.
- 23:23Is it hitting it on its way
- 23:25up and back down?
- 23:26Is it hitting it on its way up?
- 23:29You know, is it,
- 23:30and it's the center of the ball.
- 23:32And, you know,
- 23:33that's another athlete thing that,
- 23:35you know, sometimes they don't, you know,
- 23:37don't hear in the briefing
- 23:38or whatever that it's, you know,
- 23:40in most competitions,
- 23:42it's the ball has to go up
- 23:43and hit the target on the way up.
- 23:46not kind of loop and then
- 23:47come back down and hit it.
- 23:49Because a lot of times
- 23:49that's considered a no rep.
- 23:51Now,
- 23:52if you watch the CrossFit video of a
- 23:57wall ball on YouTube,
- 23:59there's one of those that
- 24:00it does go up and then come
- 24:02back down and hits the target.
- 24:05And so I can understand why
- 24:06they might think that that's a rep.
- 24:10But, yeah,
- 24:11getting to depth is the hardest
- 24:13for a lot of them.
- 24:16Again,
- 24:16I've been briefed at different
- 24:18competitions where they
- 24:19allow the loop of the ball.
- 24:22Right.
- 24:23Yeah.
- 24:23Yeah.
- 24:23So that's what makes it difficult, too,
- 24:24is there are multiple
- 24:26standards across different competitions.
- 24:29Right.
- 24:30But the biggest favor any
- 24:31competition director can do
- 24:33is to set up that wall ball
- 24:35target where everything on
- 24:38the target is above the
- 24:40ten-foot or nine-foot line.
- 24:42Right.
- 24:42Yeah.
- 24:42Yeah.
- 24:46So the people that say you
- 24:49have to hit the center of
- 24:50the target because the way that's set up,
- 24:52that makes things so,
- 24:53so much more difficult.
- 24:54Yeah.
- 24:57Above the line,
- 24:58just like hit it above the line.
- 24:59Yep.
- 25:00Where if they put it like
- 25:01the nine foot mark right at
- 25:02the bottom of the target, then every,
- 25:05and it hits anything on that face,
- 25:07then it's good.
- 25:11Yeah.
- 25:11Heidi, I never go to depth.
- 25:13Why would I?
- 25:17That is why the squad is a
- 25:18foundational movement.
- 25:20That's true.
- 25:22The hardest part for wall
- 25:23balls for me is that my neck hurts.
- 25:30Especially if it's a lot.
- 25:32If you're far enough away,
- 25:33you don't have to do it as much.
- 25:36You can step back a little bit.
- 25:37That's...
- 25:39Yeah.
- 25:39It's I've heard some, some head judges,
- 25:43no team leads say like,
- 25:44especially if something's being on video,
- 25:46they don't,
- 25:47they don't want to see that a
- 25:48judge going doing, doing,
- 25:51doing any kind of head bobs
- 25:52because it just looks,
- 25:54it looks strange on, on, on, on TV.
- 25:58Yeah.
- 25:58Like the row of double under judges going.
- 26:03Well, you know, that's Josh,
- 26:05Josh Scott talking about, um,
- 26:09proximity to athletes and other judges and,
- 26:13you know,
- 26:13having like twenty lanes and all
- 26:17at the same time,
- 26:18you're all right there
- 26:19together and they're doing wall balls and,
- 26:22you know,
- 26:22they drop the ball on you or whatever.
- 26:24And then whenever you're
- 26:25talking about handstand
- 26:26pushups or wall walks,
- 26:28there's been so many times
- 26:29I nearly got kicked or seen
- 26:31other judges get kicked
- 26:32because you're just right there together.
- 26:34Yeah.
- 26:34Yeah.
- 26:36uh corey leonard legends my
- 26:38judge thanked me for
- 26:39hitting depth on my wall
- 26:40balls proud moment right
- 26:41there all right uh so
- 26:45andrew what's your number
- 26:46one uh my number one is
- 26:48chin over bar pull-ups okay
- 26:51it's like whether it's
- 26:52kipping no or the dreaded
- 26:55strict pull-up that a lot
- 26:57of palooza did and two
- 26:59years ago for the rain
- 27:02It's just you're not in a
- 27:04good position to ever see
- 27:07the chin higher than the bar.
- 27:11Like someone's doing butterfly pull ups.
- 27:14It's like the best spot is
- 27:19being level with the bar.
- 27:20So you can see that you're
- 27:23in front or at an angle.
- 27:26You might be able to see a shadow.
- 27:29You just almost have to guess.
- 27:31It looks like the other chins.
- 27:33Some people get pretty
- 27:34obvious with their height,
- 27:36their head way above the bar.
- 27:39Some people on their butterfly pull-ups,
- 27:40they're so close.
- 27:43Then strict pull-ups,
- 27:45they should never ever be
- 27:46in the competition.
- 27:49Vertically challenged.
- 27:52It was done at Guadalupe for
- 27:53safety reasons, but
- 27:57no judge was judging to the
- 27:58same standard because some
- 28:01judges were like, hey,
- 28:03your feet are moving.
- 28:04It's an over.
- 28:06The rest of your body is
- 28:06going to move a little bit
- 28:07when you pull yourself up.
- 28:10Your legs are going to move
- 28:11as long as you're not
- 28:13bending your knees and
- 28:14kicking and getting an
- 28:15advantage that way.
- 28:18It was a mess.
- 28:20I'd rather see chest-to-bar pull-ups.
- 28:23and a competition,
- 28:25because those are so easy to judge.
- 28:28Yeah,
- 28:28I remember I judged a young lady one time,
- 28:30and she was doing butterfly pull-ups,
- 28:33but she would arch so much
- 28:36that she thought she was getting them,
- 28:38but her chin was like just, I mean,
- 28:41just right there at the, you know,
- 28:43whenever you think about
- 28:44the plane of the bar coming
- 28:46out and her crossing that plane.
- 28:51And she was not happy, but I'm like,
- 28:53get your head up so I can see your chin.
- 29:01D. Reed asked this question.
- 29:02What is the impact of the
- 29:03elites skirting the
- 29:05standards on box members?
- 29:10Depends on if the elites
- 29:11actually go to a box to work out.
- 29:14Members actually see them work out.
- 29:16But I do think box members
- 29:18that watch the sport,
- 29:19which is really a low
- 29:20percentage from what I've
- 29:23experienced at different boxes,
- 29:25is that there's a small
- 29:27percentage that actually
- 29:28watch the sport and talk about it.
- 29:33I think the skirting of the
- 29:34standards comes more from
- 29:35competition with you and
- 29:37other people in your gym
- 29:38more than watching an elite
- 29:39athlete do it.
- 29:40Yeah.
- 29:43And then that comes down to the coaches.
- 29:46in the gym saying, Hey, don't,
- 29:49don't do what they're doing.
- 29:51Right.
- 29:51You squat the depth because they're,
- 29:54they're, they're trying to race.
- 29:57No, they're, they're riding like,
- 29:58think of it like an auto racer.
- 30:00They're, they're on that edge of like,
- 30:02how far can I push this car
- 30:05to where it turns and,
- 30:06but not turn enough to where I spin out.
- 30:09No, that's what,
- 30:10that's what the elites are doing.
- 30:13Yeah,
- 30:13we don't go down I- seventy-one at
- 30:15two hundred miles an hour
- 30:16just because Jeff Gordon
- 30:18did it last weekend.
- 30:18Right.
- 30:22All right.
- 30:23So because we're already
- 30:24past like halfway mark of this lunch hour,
- 30:29your online list,
- 30:31just tell me what's
- 30:32different and why it's different from the,
- 30:36we'll go back and forth,
- 30:37but something that's
- 30:38different from your list on
- 30:39online and why it makes a
- 30:41difference online to in person.
- 30:43We'll start with Andrew this time.
- 30:47The only thing I had really
- 30:48different was anything that
- 30:49has a distance to move.
- 30:53like no lunging for distance
- 30:55or shoulder runs or that
- 30:57only because the way a camera is set up.
- 31:03And if you've ever done video reviewing,
- 31:05we all know camera setups
- 31:09are people are just,
- 31:11I don't understand their
- 31:13thinking sometimes with
- 31:14their camera setups.
- 31:15It's, you know,
- 31:16but it's often the camera's
- 31:19not in the best position to see.
- 31:21Did they cross the line?
- 31:22Did they get all the way?
- 31:24No, in person,
- 31:26if someone's lunging for a distance,
- 31:28the judge is right there
- 31:29watching that foot.
- 31:30Okay, is that foot on the line?
- 31:31Okay, you got one more lunge.
- 31:33You know,
- 31:35if someone's doing the workout by
- 31:38themselves in the gym,
- 31:40they don't have someone judging them.
- 31:41There's no one there to tell them that.
- 31:43And, and then, you know,
- 31:47if it was a judge there,
- 31:48they can tell them like one more,
- 31:49so then they wouldn't get a
- 31:50penalty on the video review.
- 31:53So that's one thing I don't like,
- 31:56or one of the many things I
- 31:57don't like about video
- 32:00online competition.
- 32:03Kind of in line with that,
- 32:04the further the distance,
- 32:06the better quality camera
- 32:07we would hope you would have.
- 32:09And we know, like the iPhone now,
- 32:11the lowest resolution is high def.
- 32:14Yet,
- 32:14you see videos where people must be
- 32:16using an LG Slide from the
- 32:20to video these things
- 32:22because it is so blurry and
- 32:24so hard to see.
- 32:27But you can make movie
- 32:28quality stuff with an iPhone.
- 32:30The fact that they're not
- 32:34makes you believe that
- 32:35they're trying to hide something.
- 32:38Right.
- 32:39And whether or not they use
- 32:40landscape or whether they use, you know,
- 32:43the other view that,
- 32:44that makes a difference too.
- 32:46Yeah.
- 32:48And I liked it in the,
- 32:50the advanced judges course.
- 32:51They talk about that.
- 32:52They, they have something in there saying,
- 32:54Hey, use landscape, you know,
- 32:57use landscape view.
- 32:58Don't, don't, don't use the portrait view.
- 32:59Yeah.
- 33:00Uh, Jaybert,
- 33:02do you have anything different
- 33:03on your list?
- 33:05And so, um, I did, I had ring muscle ups.
- 33:08You had mentioned ring muscle ups and, um,
- 33:11thrusters.
- 33:14as online as kind of being, you know,
- 33:16kind of iffy here and there.
- 33:20I think anything that
- 33:21depends on the camera angle
- 33:24makes it hard.
- 33:26What I loved about when
- 33:27Rogue did their online
- 33:28competition is there was a
- 33:29very set floor layout and
- 33:32the height at which you set your camera
- 33:35and they had two cameras per box.
- 33:39Now,
- 33:39they were broadcasting with those cameras,
- 33:41so it had to be set up that way.
- 33:44But they had a spot for the judge.
- 33:46They had a spot for the athlete.
- 33:47Everything was laid out in
- 33:49that online format with Rogue.
- 33:51The only thing that was
- 33:52crazy for me during that time was –
- 33:56saxon was snatching
- 33:59something big it would like
- 34:01in the high two hundreds
- 34:02and like where the judge
- 34:04had to be like was scary
- 34:08you were in front of them
- 34:10for that snatch with all
- 34:12that weight and in the box
- 34:13they gave there wasn't a
- 34:14lot of room and you had to
- 34:17be ready to move if they
- 34:21missed yeah well what's fun
- 34:23about that also is that he
- 34:24had he had the earpiece in
- 34:27And sometimes Rob or Drake
- 34:29would be on there and be like, Andrew,
- 34:31move to your left, move to your left.
- 34:35Literally in the middle.
- 34:37They'd be talking to a specific judge.
- 34:40Yep.
- 34:42Kenneth asks, with CrossFit,
- 34:43does Ty go to the runner or no?
- 34:45No.
- 34:46It's actually opposite.
- 34:47Depends.
- 34:49See, sometimes that's in person.
- 34:53Sometimes in the judges' briefs,
- 34:56they'll tell us, hey.
- 34:58At a CrossFit competition?
- 35:00If CrossFit's running it?
- 35:03I've never been.
- 35:06It depends on the movement.
- 35:08Especially the biggest one
- 35:10that I've heard is like a rope climb,
- 35:15especially a Legos rope
- 35:16climb because it's such an expensive rep.
- 35:20That if they know if you call a no rep,
- 35:23they come down.
- 35:24That's a lot of energy that
- 35:25that person just waits it on, on a rep.
- 35:27So if it's, you know, bang, bang, no,
- 35:32it's like so close.
- 35:33Like if you think it's a tie,
- 35:35sometimes I'll say tie goes
- 35:37at a runner on that one.
- 35:40No.
- 35:40So it, it does happen.
- 35:45You're muted.
- 35:45You're muted.
- 35:49That's a big shift because
- 35:50in the mid to late teens,
- 35:51like Boz and Chuck were
- 35:53very much about if any doubt,
- 35:57it always is a no rep.
- 35:58Yeah.
- 35:59I mean,
- 36:00there are some things that are that way,
- 36:02but on things that are
- 36:05super expensive reps where
- 36:08it's like it's been said
- 36:12where they'll let the tie
- 36:14go to the runner.
- 36:17Yeah.
- 36:18I think one thing that's
- 36:19interesting is in all the sports,
- 36:22everybody complains about judging,
- 36:25refereeing, umpiring.
- 36:29Everybody.
- 36:30It is universal.
- 36:32People say it's bad in
- 36:34CrossFit because it's volunteers.
- 36:35I would say the volunteers
- 36:36in CrossFit do just as good
- 36:38of a job as the referees in the NFL.
- 36:43And there are just as many, if not more,
- 36:45complaints in the NFL as
- 36:46there are at a CrossFit competition.
- 36:50And if you watch any judged
- 36:51event where things are scored,
- 36:54there are people livid
- 36:55about the way things are
- 36:56scored by judges in ice skating, diving,
- 37:00and those events.
- 37:04Are you guys both members of the FJ?
- 37:05Yeah.
- 37:05Yeah.
- 37:05Yeah.
- 37:09What do you think that has
- 37:10done for judging in this space?
- 37:17It's still pretty new.
- 37:20So they're still getting things together.
- 37:23I know that they're
- 37:25actively... At Wild Palooza,
- 37:28they had one of their first
- 37:30in-person seminars online.
- 37:33which was really cool,
- 37:35having games-level athletes there.
- 37:38Con Porter and Alex Kazan
- 37:40were there to demonstrate
- 37:42and get feedback to judges
- 37:45on what athletes are
- 37:46thinking on that side.
- 37:49And then they were actively
- 37:52evaluating judges while
- 37:55they were judging.
- 37:58So I think this is the first
- 38:00year that they're really
- 38:01kind of doing that.
- 38:04So it'll take a little time
- 38:05for that to kind of ramp up,
- 38:08but competitions are
- 38:10starting to look to the FJ
- 38:12to staff their competitions.
- 38:16So it's getting known in the
- 38:22space as people who are
- 38:25highly qualified and
- 38:27knowledgeable about the
- 38:29judging and can help raise
- 38:31the level of judging
- 38:33at a competition.
- 38:35So I believe I heard that
- 38:37mayhem is bringing an AFJ
- 38:39judges for the classic.
- 38:41Yep.
- 38:41That is correct.
- 38:43Did I see the WFP is doing that as well?
- 38:46Uh, not sure.
- 38:49Okay.
- 38:51Uh, maybe I just dreamt that or something.
- 38:53Um, what about,
- 38:54I think the WFP did partner with, uh,
- 38:58AFJ to have some judges there,
- 39:01but I don't know if their
- 39:02entire competition is going
- 39:04to be supplied by AFJ judges.
- 39:08Any other ones that you guys know of?
- 39:13I know I think Metcon Rush.
- 39:15I think they used them last year,
- 39:17at least for some of the
- 39:20lead positions or head
- 39:24judging and things like that.
- 39:27I know there's some smaller
- 39:29competitions that have used
- 39:31them to help bring in a couple.
- 39:35Now,
- 39:35I think that the goal of the AFJ is
- 39:36not that they staff the entire thing,
- 39:40but they sprinkle in some
- 39:43experienced judges to help
- 39:47mentor and spread the
- 39:49knowledge to newer judges
- 39:51that are at these competitions.
- 39:53It was,
- 39:54it was affirmed that Guadalupalooza
- 39:56was going to be the first
- 39:58time AFJ were going to
- 39:59judge their judges.
- 40:01Do you know if, did that happen?
- 40:02And did you, you judge there, Andrew,
- 40:04did you get feedback?
- 40:05Well, I was, I was a head judge.
- 40:08Okay.
- 40:09So I was actually on the floor.
- 40:11I was,
- 40:11I was briefing athletes in the
- 40:14athlete area,
- 40:16but I do know that they were,
- 40:17the AFJ was there.
- 40:19actively evaluating judges in real time.
- 40:23Like while they're on,
- 40:25they would watch them
- 40:26during an event and
- 40:28evaluate the judge and how they did.
- 40:32And they,
- 40:32did they give them immediate
- 40:33feedback or was that post-comp?
- 40:36I'm not sure.
- 40:37I think it was more post-comp.
- 40:39Okay.
- 40:41But that's,
- 40:42but I'm not a hundred percent
- 40:43sure on that.
- 40:45Anything to help level up
- 40:46the judging community is a good thing.
- 40:48Oh yeah.
- 40:49Yeah.
- 40:49I mean, and, and every competition,
- 40:51like head judges, I've always said,
- 40:52they've always said, Hey,
- 40:53if you want no feedback,
- 40:55I even cross CrossFit
- 40:56evaluates their judges.
- 40:58Now they just don't,
- 40:58they don't make it public and no,
- 41:01they don't always necessarily always,
- 41:03they don't have like a
- 41:04valuation criteria that I don't have,
- 41:08but I mean, they're,
- 41:09they're watching the judges.
- 41:10And so that's why sometimes you'll,
- 41:12you'll hear judges not
- 41:14coming back next year, no,
- 41:17in the following year.
- 41:18And,
- 41:21Yeah.
- 41:21When I did the two thousand
- 41:22eighteen regionals,
- 41:23we were judged or we were evaluated.
- 41:27Top twenty take the floor.
- 41:28Next twenty are the backup
- 41:30judges on the sidelines.
- 41:32And then the other forty
- 41:33were did not have to come on Sunday.
- 41:38And that was during the regional days.
- 41:40So you start the weekend
- 41:41with eighty judges for Friday,
- 41:44Saturday and then Sunday.
- 41:46It's down to the top forty.
- 41:50With the top twenty only
- 41:51taking the floor and the
- 41:53next twenty being the
- 41:54backup counters and judges
- 41:57in what would be the media pit.
- 42:01Just kind of crouched down
- 42:04having a lane themselves to
- 42:05judge from there.
- 42:07And I don't even know if
- 42:08people know that even happens.
- 42:10I don't, yeah.
- 42:10I mean, cause they, they don't,
- 42:12they don't make it public, you know,
- 42:13they don't necessarily, they won't,
- 42:14they won't come to you across it.
- 42:17In my experience,
- 42:17they never like after
- 42:19across the company didn't
- 42:19come to me and said, Hey, here,
- 42:21here's your evaluation.
- 42:22Right.
- 42:23It's more like, Hey,
- 42:24like you go to the head judge and say,
- 42:26Hey, can I get some feedback?
- 42:28Yeah.
- 42:30And for them, like sometimes it's tough.
- 42:32No head judges there.
- 42:33They're not necessarily
- 42:34always looking at individual judges.
- 42:35That's more up to the team leads.
- 42:38If they have people split into teams,
- 42:40The head judges kind of rely
- 42:42on them for the feedback
- 42:44because they're actively watching like,
- 42:46no, ten judges.
- 42:47Like, that's my team.
- 42:48I'm going to watch these ten
- 42:49people and pass the feedback up.
- 42:52We didn't get a written evaluation,
- 42:53but you knew if you were
- 42:54top twenty or the next
- 42:55twenty and you knew if you
- 42:57were bottom forty.
- 42:58And throughout the weekend,
- 43:01you would tell you, hey, try this or hey,
- 43:04try that.
- 43:05And of course,
- 43:05if something was going down on the floor,
- 43:07you got tapped on the
- 43:08shoulder by the head judge.
- 43:09Look for this or you need to
- 43:11look for that or whatever.
- 43:13You do get those feedbacks immediately.
- 43:16But then at the end of the weekend,
- 43:18it's that that's all you
- 43:20knew back in those days.
- 43:21Yeah.
- 43:23Well, cool guys.
- 43:24Well,
- 43:24thank you so much for jumping on with
- 43:26me today.
- 43:28Yeah, no problem.
- 43:31Yeah.
- 43:31Got to highlight the judges.
- 43:32You guys work hard out there.
- 43:33Try to.
- 43:37Well guys,
- 43:37our lunch hour is just about up.
- 43:39So time to get back to work.
- 43:40You hooligans.
- 43:41And we'll see everybody next
- 43:42time on lunch with the Clydesdale.
- 43:44Bye guys.
- 43:45See ya.
