- 0:00Speaker 1: We're live from Dancing Rabbit Golf Club on the property
- 0:02Speaker 1: of Pearl River Resort. Yes, Bar two and I did
- 0:04Speaker 1: go to the sports book yesterday. We will be back
- 0:07Speaker 1: there today. Bar two is going to make some bets
- 0:11Speaker 1: on Week one Ole missing Louisville and possibly some other games.
- 0:16Speaker 2: But we want to get into.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Where do national championship coaches come from? And so let's
- 0:26Speaker 1: just go over Kurt Signetty the last one, Ryan Day
- 0:31Speaker 1: before that, Ohio State, and Jim Harbaugh at Michigan before that,
- 0:35Speaker 1: in Kirby Smart before that, because everybody outside of the
- 0:41Speaker 1: SEC is loving that we haven't won a championship in
- 0:46Speaker 1: three years?
- 0:47Speaker 2: Now?
- 0:47Speaker 1: Are we going to win another one? Of course we
- 0:49Speaker 1: are in our sleep. And would I be surprised if Georgia,
- 0:53Speaker 1: Like if I went somewhere, if Bar two put me
- 0:56Speaker 1: on a spaceship today and I didn't come back until
- 0:59Speaker 1: Jim Anuary twenty first, and somebody told me that Georgia
- 1:05Speaker 1: won the national Championship, I wouldn't be surprised.
- 1:07Speaker 2: You can't be right, right, you can't be And I
- 1:10Speaker 2: think when we were we were talking about the different
- 1:12Speaker 2: coaches last night and the reason I'd brought it up
- 1:14Speaker 2: in our conversation is just watching on the social medias
- 1:19Speaker 2: some of the people talking about, well, this is where
- 1:22Speaker 2: national championship coaches come from. You've got to be a
- 1:25Speaker 2: great OC or a great DC at some point. They
- 1:27Speaker 2: don't come from small schools, you know. And I think
- 1:31Speaker 2: it was a lot of it was in reference to
- 1:33Speaker 2: will Stein being a really good offensive coordinator at Oregon
- 1:37Speaker 2: and UTSA. Now he's at Kentucky, and you know, it
- 1:41Speaker 2: kind of just got me thinking of where do And
- 1:45Speaker 2: it goes along with the conversation we had too about
- 1:49Speaker 2: sometimes as an athletic director, when you're hiring guys, it's
- 1:53Speaker 2: better to be more lucky than good. Sure, right, And
- 1:56Speaker 2: you look at these national championship guys and yeah, we
- 1:59Speaker 2: love elite ocs. We love elite DC's. Look at Kirby,
- 2:03Speaker 2: yeah right, I mean he is in my numbers, without
- 2:07Speaker 2: a doubt, the best defensive coordinator in the two thousands. Yeah,
- 2:10Speaker 2: at least it's twenty ten. Okay, Okay, you know in uh,
- 2:15Speaker 2: let's call it his generation. Yet the last fifteen years.
- 2:19Speaker 2: You know, I'm never one of those guys of greatest
- 2:21Speaker 2: of all time. I like, how were you in your generation?
- 2:25Speaker 2: Because rules. Everything's always changing. Sure, you know we're going
- 2:28Speaker 2: to look back at the post in pre nil era, right, right,
- 2:32Speaker 2: because that twenty twenty one transition, We're gonna look back
- 2:38Speaker 2: and it's going to be I think it's going to
- 2:40Speaker 2: be Wow, that really really changed football. We know it's
- 2:43Speaker 2: going to. But to what extent We're not sure? Right?
- 2:47Speaker 2: So you look at these, you look at the National
- 2:49Speaker 2: champions and you look at Kurt Signetty, Right, was he
- 2:53Speaker 2: an elite OC? No? Is he in late DC? No? No?
- 2:56Speaker 2: Did he come out of the G six? Actually he
- 2:58Speaker 2: came out of what Division two? Yeah? Division III? So
- 3:03Speaker 2: he didn't have that before that. You got Ryan Day, Okay,
- 3:06Speaker 2: we'll give him elite OC. Right, So we got elite OC.
- 3:09Speaker 2: But Jim Harbaugh wasn't elite anything before being a head coach.
- 3:13Speaker 2: He was at San Diego, no scholar scholarship. San Diego
- 3:17Speaker 2: is where he started as the head coach. So two
- 3:19Speaker 2: of our last three national championship winning head coaches came
- 3:23Speaker 2: from what most fans would say the absolute bottom of
- 3:26Speaker 2: the bucket in terms of college football, Right, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 2: national champions don't come from there, right, And then you
- 3:32Speaker 2: got Kurby and think about that.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Yeah, Quake Bart two, I understand Signetty, you know, having
- 3:38Speaker 1: to go. I mean he went from low ball low
- 3:42Speaker 1: a minor league baseball basically to the promised land of
- 3:46Speaker 1: winning the national championship. But harball, after playing fifteen years
- 3:49Speaker 1: in the NFL and having played at a blue blood,
- 3:53Speaker 1: still had to go to San Diego with a non
- 3:56Speaker 1: scholarship football program to cut his teeth.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Exactly right, and then to Stanford and so forth.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But Stanford didn't win before him or after him. That's
- 4:05Speaker 1: how damn good he is.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and he wasn't some great offensive or defensive coordinator
- 4:10Speaker 2: like a Kirby Right or o Ryan Day. And then
- 4:14Speaker 2: obviously you have Nick Saban. Where's his first job Toledo.
- 4:19Speaker 2: He's head coach at Toledo Rockets. Right, So now we
- 4:23Speaker 2: got a guy coming from now when we got two
- 4:26Speaker 2: Division two, Division three guys, an elite DC, elite OC
- 4:29Speaker 2: and a guy from the MAC right, and and then
- 4:33Speaker 2: we had that then oh gosh, then the twenty nineteen
- 4:39Speaker 2: LSU or Durons Eddie oh right, and Eddie, well, Eddie's
- 4:43Speaker 2: been Eddie's an elite storyteller. He is, oh my gosh,
- 4:47Speaker 2: an elite recruiter, right right. I mean if if if
- 4:49Speaker 2: there was a thirty to thirty to thirty ESPN thirty
- 4:52Speaker 2: thirty on recruiting stories, I'd be like, could you just
- 4:56Speaker 2: turn the camera on two people that.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I would love to hear from if they could say
- 5:02Speaker 1: whatever they wanted, which they kind of can today since
- 5:04Speaker 1: we're in new rules, which Ed is kind of doing
- 5:06Speaker 1: in interviews, which is great because we were so pearl
- 5:09Speaker 1: clutching as college football. We knew that kids have been
- 5:13Speaker 1: paid under the table. It's been dirty forever, ms, churches.
- 5:18Speaker 2: What do we do it? Yeah? We have a salary
- 5:20Speaker 2: can now? So what?
- 5:21Speaker 1: But the two guys that there's more than this, But
- 5:24Speaker 1: the two guys currently would be Eddio and Mario Cristobal
- 5:29Speaker 1: listening because they're absolutely ruthless warlords.
- 5:33Speaker 2: When it comes to recruiting. Okay, go ahead, Yeah.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think one of my which by the way,
- 5:39Speaker 1: right now you have and I may have missed one,
- 5:41Speaker 1: but right now you have Dabbo National Championship coach non
- 5:45Speaker 1: Alito c or DC Signetti National Championship. This is recently
- 5:49Speaker 1: save Signetti, Saban and EDDIEO. I think I'm missing one,
- 5:54Speaker 1: but these are guys who were never ever elite play
- 5:58Speaker 1: callers and their national championship coaches.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Jim Dressel, Thank you, Jim Tressel. He's not he was
- 6:06Speaker 2: never released. I'm not an unbelievable football coach. Yeah, good
- 6:10Speaker 2: gree that Youngstown State and this guy.
- 6:14Speaker 1: They were so well coached, so fundamentally sound in the trenches,
- 6:18Speaker 1: so but very Signette like go ahead right for too.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Urban Meyer non elite OC not onlye DC another one.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Bowling Green State University right right and Urban to me
- 6:30Speaker 2: has always been the poster child of the progressive head
- 6:35Speaker 2: coach instant impact. He walked into Bowling Green, Bowling Green,
- 6:40Speaker 2: bam eight and four, nothing to eight and four, walks
- 6:44Speaker 2: into Utah, bam, walks into Florida. I mean everything that
- 6:48Speaker 2: man touched. He was the most progressive in terms of
- 6:54Speaker 2: being able to move from program to program.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Hang on, let me go through them again. These are
- 6:58Speaker 1: for our listeners. The These are coaches that have won
- 7:01Speaker 1: national championships. I'm not talking about in nineteen sixty seven,
- 7:05Speaker 1: which doesn't matter in the last fifteen years. Dabo Signetti,
- 7:10Speaker 1: Saban ed o'sern Jim Trussell, Urban Meyer. No, none of
- 7:14Speaker 1: them were elite OC's or DC's this is past.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Give you another one. Okay, this guy average play caller,
- 7:22Speaker 2: Jimbo Fisher. Oh wow, Jimbo. But he had to be great.
- 7:28Speaker 1: You know how we label guys because he was under Saban,
- 7:31Speaker 1: they had to do a score ten points a game.
- 7:33Speaker 1: When he was at LSU, he immediately got that that law.
- 7:37Speaker 1: So if you're near Saban, or you're near Urban at
- 7:40Speaker 1: a certain time, or you're near dab you know how we're.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you're near That means you're elite. R Sean mcvacky, like.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Charlie White Senior and Romeo Crenell under Bill Belichick and
- 7:50Speaker 1: they both went three and thirty nine when they got
- 7:52Speaker 1: head coaching and Josh McDaniel and when they got head
- 7:55Speaker 1: coaching jobs.
- 7:56Speaker 2: They couldn't get it done. Go ahead, you know, Dave
- 7:58Speaker 2: bar two on the Out of Bound show. Okay, how
- 8:01Speaker 2: about a really good offensive coordinator? I would say, not elite,
- 8:04Speaker 2: but came out of nowhere right where he started. Gus
- 8:10Speaker 2: smells on, Yeah, right, Arkansas State. Actually, Arkansas State has
- 8:17Speaker 2: produced a couple of guys. Yeah, so gush, Hugh Freeze
- 8:20Speaker 2: not but Jones not but John how is he getting renewed?
- 8:25Speaker 1: I don't know, right, but you're right, Mauson and Freeze
- 8:29Speaker 1: and they made quick quick stops in Jonesborough.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And then you go and you go even past fifteen
- 8:35Speaker 2: years though, is you do have the elite play caller,
- 8:39Speaker 2: the elite football mind in Spurrier. Sure, we'll we'll give him.
- 8:44Speaker 2: We'll give him that.
- 8:45Speaker 1: If you were grading back, then he would have graded
- 8:47Speaker 1: oh through through the roof, okay.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Right, I mean I doubt, I doubt there is anybody
- 8:55Speaker 2: that I knew that could take twenty two guys and
- 9:00Speaker 2: win a football game, just any random twenty two guys
- 9:04Speaker 2: and just go out and play football, you know, just
- 9:06Speaker 2: just just his mind in terms of being able to
- 9:09Speaker 2: manage the game, the offense, the flow of the game, everything.
- 9:13Speaker 2: I don't think there was anybody like him. There's a
- 9:16Speaker 2: lot of similarities between Spurrier and Lane Kiffin. There there
- 9:21Speaker 2: is actually, I always I always thought one of the
- 9:23Speaker 2: biggest similarity to the Spurrier in terms of just give me,
- 9:27Speaker 2: just give me a play card. Leach is Leech. Yeah,
- 9:30Speaker 2: you know is you know, drive around on the golf
- 9:33Speaker 2: cart for six days and then Saturday, show up, go
- 9:36Speaker 2: coach game, win kick your tail. Yeah, exactly. Just give
- 9:39Speaker 2: me eleven guys and I'll beat you, right, just just
- 9:43Speaker 2: absolutely amazing.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Okay, one more, Chiswick was not an elite DMC, and
- 9:48Speaker 1: he wonted at Auburn.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Right and anything, and then less Miles, Oh my gosh,
- 9:52Speaker 2: less Miles.
- 9:54Speaker 1: He wasn't an elite play caller. No, he was an
- 9:56Speaker 1: offensive line coach who played under both schim Beckler all right,
