- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Hi there and welcome to another episode of Rise Up, Live Joy Your Way.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: I am Comedy Wood and I'm thrilled that you tuned in to the podcast today.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: For those of you who are unfamiliar with who I am or what I do, I am a mother of five.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: But professionally, I'm a life coach that works with individuals on healing the relationship with self, ending the outsourcing of self-worth, all in an effort to have the success that my clients want in business and in their personal lives.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: It's about living the life that they choose to live for themselves and letting go of all of the box checking.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Today I wanted to talk about just the uncertainty that we all seem to be facing.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: There's a lot happening in our world right now, especially in the United States.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: And I think the uncertainty and anxiety is at an all-time high.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: As of right now, the numbers would indicate that the coronavirus, pandemic illnesses are back on the rise, that the virus is spreading again very rapidly.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: I know that a lot of my clients have been talking about the fears that are popping back up with the fact that the return to normal seems to be even further away.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: They're worried about what's really going to happen if this, what some people are calling the second wave, some people are calling the third wave, really hit us.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: There's news uh coming out of Europe and other countries that they are having to go back to lockdown.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: And there's the worry that we're gonna have the same thing happen here.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: And I can say that uh many of my clients are struggling with just the frustration that is coming along with just how things have been shook up in 2020.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: And we've been talking a lot in our sessions about how to deal with these anxieties and how to deal with these fears and the call of wanting to go back to normal.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: And truthfully, I think a lot of it is coming to terms with the fact that normal, the definition of normal, has has changed.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm I'm I think back to um pre-9-11 and what uh traveling looked like through when you were flying from one place to another, and then unfortunately, the events of 9-11 happened and all of the subsequent issues that we were facing within our country, and which led to the new rules and regulations about how we go through T uh TSA um security check.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: And there were moments I remember hearing people and even myself feeling like, goodness gracious, can we just get back to how things used to be?
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: But now, several years later, we have become accustomed to the new ways of getting through security, and it's just part of what we do.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: And honestly, I think we're getting to that point now where it we're gonna have to at some point come to this acceptance idea.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I talk a lot about this just in coaching in general, where there's this concept of acceptance and commitment um-based coaching, which is about really understanding the here and now, understanding that uh we can't control all the things.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: But what we have control of is uh how we react to situations, how we choose to show up.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: And that's a choice on a daily basis.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: And there are times when we really do wish that we could control it or we could just fix it, quote unquote fix it.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: And it's about accepting where we are and then making the commitment to how are we going to move forward.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: And I know that sounds a lot easier said than done, um, but it really comes to the point of letting go of the past as though that's what we're trying to get back to.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: It's about recognizing, yes, those things and how we used to show up, that's how it was, and we have learned things from that, and maybe they were great times and we can remember those memories.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Maybe things weren't as great in in the past and we would like to fix them.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: The truth is we can't fix the past, so it's really about allowing the past to be.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: And then it's about really uh really holding ourselves accountable for not future tripping.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: And what I mean by that is not trying to solve problems that don't yet exist, not trying to get caught up in the what-ifs or when this, then I will be happy, when this, then I will do this.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: It's about allowing space to be in the here and now, really getting mindful.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: And I've talked about mindfulness so much on this podcast because I truly believe that when we can get present in our current moment, we are we allow the space for the monkey mind to settle down.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: We allow the space for the attachment to specific outcomes to settle down, and it gives us space to become more creative, it gives our mind the ability to figure out alternative methods to approach an adverse situation.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: It allows our mind the ability to be more flexible in its thinking.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: We don't think ourselves into a box because we're in the here and now rather than trying to solve problems that don't even exist yet, or trying to control the things that we can't control.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: So it's really about that practice.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: It's about getting into the here and now.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: And I've talked about this before that there are different methods to getting into this practice, but I really encourage people to find the method that works for them.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Really, how do you know finding the method that gets you to settle yourself down?
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: I really truly advocate the five senses method where we're really zoning in on what those five senses are experiencing in this moment, because if we dial in for a few moments and just simply focus in on the noises that we're hearing, or you know, the um the things that we're seeing or the things that we're touching, it it really allows for the mind to quiet and focus, just focus on that here and now because that's when we become aware of what is happening now, and from that place we can then ask ourselves a very simple question: what is the one thing that I can do in this moment to move myself forward?
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: Just for now, what is the one thing that I can commit to to move myself forward?
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: So, for instance, as we are in my household, we're dealing with the ups and downs of virtual school and what that's gonna look like.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: And even I have a set of kids who are uh in school a couple days a week and then they're virtual school a few more days a week, and there's a lot of talk happening right now what's gonna happen after the Thanksgiving break, because the school is very concerned about families and students traveling over the Thanksgiving break to various parts of the country and then possibly all coming back into the school system and not knowing if they might have the coronavirus, and so there's a lot of uncertainty about what that's gonna look like, and many of us can get caught up trying to figure out what that's gonna be, and I know that I've had to reel myself in at times where I'm I'm thinking about okay, so what's gonna happen come December and what's the schedule gonna look like and and how am I gonna manage that in addition to managing my my practice?
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: And I have to really get back into the present moment today.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: For today, this is how we're doing school.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: For today, this is what our schedule looks like, and from that place figure out how this day is gonna unfold.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: And then it's also about allowing grace, right?
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: So if we've thought of how this day should unfold and it doesn't unfold exactly how we wanted it to, it's giving ourselves the grace, giving ourselves that compassion where we recognize we're doing the best we can, and that it, you know, tomorrow's another day, and we can take the lessons learned from today and apply it to tomorrow.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: I know that I've talked a lot about mindfulness prior to this, but I really feel like with the uncertainty that seems to be cropping up for all of us right now, with I know that every day I turn on the news and the numbers are just rising, and of course, there's the just the unsettleness happening in our in our states right now, just with you know, with the election, there's just a lot of worry and fear, and it's not about running away from the fear, it's about recognizing it and then asking ourselves, how can we get present right now and what is the one thing that we can commit to to move forward?
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: It's that acceptance piece of the here and now and then the commitment to move forward.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: I hope this was helpful just dealing with or thinking through how maybe to process those fears that are coming up, uh, at least in a way that helps possibly move through them a little bit more.
