- Lucas: Hello everyone, and welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. It is so good to be here again. Hello! Lucas: Hello Luna. Today we are focusing on two very important senses. Sight and sound. Luna: Right. We have talked about many actions before, like running or sleeping. But seeing and hearing are special. Lucas: They are. Because they happen automatically. You cannot help but notice things. Let us start with sight. The word is 'lihat'. To see or to look. Luna: Lihat. Okay. Saya lihat itu. Lucas: Very good. 'Saya lihat itu.' It means 'I see that' or 'I look at that.' Let me say it slowly for you. Lihat. Luna: Lihat. Okay, I got it. Saya lihat itu. Lucas: Exactly. When you point something out, you use this phrase. If we are walking down the street and you see a cat, you can say it. Luna: Oh, I see a cat. So, Saya lihat itu? Like, pointing at the cat? Lucas: Yes. That is perfect usage. Now let us try it again together. Slowly. Saya lihat itu. Luna: Saya lihat itu. Okay, that feels easy. Lucas: It is simple and powerful. Now, let us move to the other sense. Sound. The word is 'dengar'. To hear or to listen. Luna: Dengar. Okay. Awak dengar apa? Lucas: Ah, nice one. 'Awak dengar apa?' means 'What do you hear?' This is a great question to ask when there is noise around us. Luna: So if I hear a loud car passing by, I can ask my friend, Awak dengar apa? Lucas: Precisely. Or maybe a bird singing. You want to know if they heard it too. Let me repeat the question. Awak dengar apa? Luna: Awak dengar apa? Yeah, I can definitely use that. It sounds natural. Lucas: It does. And now, let us answer that question. If someone asks you what you hear, you might say, 'Saya dengar bunyi.' It means 'I hear a sound.' Luna: Saya dengar bunyi. Okay. Is 'bunyi' just the word for sound in general? Lucas: Yes. 'Bunyi' is sound. Noise. A tone. So 'Saya dengar bunyi' is a bit vague, like 'I hear some kind of sound.' Maybe you don't know what it is yet. Luna: Oh, I see. So it is like saying 'I hear something.' Saya dengar bunyi. Got it. Lucas: Exactly. Let us practice the whole exchange. Question and answer. Awak dengar apa? Then reply. Saya dengar bunyi. Luna: Awak dengar apa?... Saya dengar bunyi. Hmm, that works well. Lucas: Good. Now, let us combine our looking and listening skills. Imagine we are in a park. I want you to look somewhere specific. Luna: Okay. What should I do? Lucas: I will say, 'Lihat ke sana.' It means 'Look over there.' The word 'ke' indicates direction. 'Sana' means 'there'. Luna: Lihat ke sana. Oh, right. Look towards there. Okay. Lucas: Yes. It is a command. A gentle instruction. Like telling a friend to focus their eyes on a distant object. Let me say it again. Lihat ke sana. Luna: Lihat ke sana. Okay, I am looking over there now. Do you see anything? Lucas: Well, you can tell me. Use your first phrase. What do you see? Luna: Saya lihat itu. I see that thing over there. Lucas: Perfect. Now, while you are looking, listen. What is the noise? Ask me using our second phrase. Luna: Awak dengar apa? Wait, no, that is asking me. I should ask you... Awak dengar apa? No, wait. I am the student. I should ask Lucas. Awak dengar apa? Lucas: Yes, you ask me. What do I hear? Luna: Awak dengar apa? Lucas, what do you hear? Lucas: I hear a sound. Saya dengar bunyi. Maybe wind in the trees. Luna: Oh, interesting. Okay, let us review all four phrases quickly. First, the visual statement. Lucas: Saya lihat itu. Luna: Second, the auditory question. Lucas: Awak dengar apa? Luna: Third, the auditory statement. Lucas: Saya dengar bunyi. Luna: Fourth, the directional command. Lucas: Lihat ke sana. Luna: Wow, those were fast. But I feel confident now. Seeing and hearing are basic, but they connect us to the world immediately. Lucas: They are the foundation of observation. Once you can see and hear, you can describe everything else. Like the colors you see or the noises you hear. Luna: True. It makes me want to go outside and practice. Notice everything. Lucas: That is the spirit. Before we go, I want to mention something about how we make these episodes. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, consider supporting us. Can you tell me one thing you see right now using 'Saya lihat itu'? Luna: Hmm, let me look. Saya lihat itu. I see my notebook. Lucas: Excellent. And one thing you hear? Use 'Saya dengar bunyi'. Luna: Saya dengar bunyi. I hear the hum of the computer fan. Lucas: Perfect observation. You are already using the language naturally. Keep looking and listening. Luna: I will. Thanks, Lucas. This was really helpful. Lucas: You are welcome, Luna. See you next time for more Malay practice. Bye for now. Luna: Bye! Jangan lupa praktik. Don't forget to practice.
