- 0:02Good morning.
- 0:11Good to see everyone out this morning.
- 0:19When I left it was summer.
- 0:28I came back and it it was almost like the weather started to make sense.
- 0:35But ~ it's still Tennessee,
- 0:39so don't know that that'll stick around for mu much longer.
- 0:43All right. Take your Bibles
- 0:49if you will and open them to Revelation chapter twenty.
- 0:54As we close out chapter 20 and we get into chapter 21,
- 0:58we're seeing some things in this text that
- 1:04for f many years I know ~ I've heard lesson after lesson after lesson
- 1:10about the text of the end of chapter twenty and its picturing
- 1:16of the final day of judgment and the final ~
- 1:22The return of Christ and the resurrection and the saints at that final day.
- 1:26And you know, sometimes what
- 1:32is popular is not exactly what the text says.
- 1:37And now are there lessons to be learned?
- 1:40Yes, but we got to pay attention to the text.
- 1:42So we're gonna open with a word of prayer and then we'll get into
- 1:46our study this morning. Gracious Father in heaven,
- 1:49we bow before your throne, grateful for
- 1:52For the day that you blessed us with,
- 1:54grateful for the life that we have been granted,
- 1:58the energy and the health that we have,
- 2:00and at the same time mindful of all of those who,
- 2:04for one reason or another, do not have that health and that opportunity.
- 2:09Lord, we pray that you will be with them in their struggles that they have
- 2:14in their daily walk. We pray that you give them health and strength.
- 2:18We pray that you help them to.
- 2:22Have the endurance and the capacity to do the things that they need to
- 2:27do and desire to do, especially in spiritual matters.
- 2:30Lord, we pray that you forgive us when we sin and fall short of your glory.
- 2:34We pray for this nation and we pray for the leaders of the world throughout
- 2:39the world. We pray that we might boldly speak the gospel and always stand firm
- 2:46in the truth. All this we pray and ask in Jesus' name,
- 2:49amen.
- 2:53Now Peter would write concerning Paul's writings that Paul wrote
- 3:00things that were hard to understand,
- 3:03and that as a result of that, those who were not faithful
- 3:09in their diligence with the scriptures often would rest the scriptures
- 3:14to their own destruction.
- 3:17I don't know what Peter's opinion was of what John wrote,
- 3:20but not everything that John wrote is easy to understand.
- 3:25But one of the things that we should always remember
- 3:31as we're in Revelation, as we're in a book like Revelation that uses apocalyptic
- 3:37language, which just simply means it uses picture language to convey a truth,
- 3:43is that When
- 3:46The text tells us what something means.
- 3:49That is what it means. And when we get into chapter 20,
- 3:55or chapter 21, rather, we're going to see the text tell us exactly what something
- 4:01means. And while we can learn lessons from
- 4:06the picture about other things,
- 4:10we must admit that whatever John says,
- 4:14this is what it is.
- 4:16It is what it is. If the text tells us what it means,
- 4:21that's what it means. If the text gives us a picture and doesn't tell
- 4:26us what it means, then we're supposed to ask the question,
- 4:29what does it mean? Chapter twenty,
- 4:32we've noticed that the text opens,
- 4:36you have the one who had the key of the bottomless pit,
- 4:39and he is going to lay hold of the dragon and place him in that bottomless
- 4:45pit for a thousand years.
- 4:46Now what does the w what does the term a thousand mean in the book of Revelation?
- 4:53A complete or total period of time.
- 4:56God owns the cattle on a thousand hills.
- 4:59God is faithful to a thousand generations.
- 5:02It doesn't mean that in the thousand and first all that's gonna be over,
- 5:06that the thousand and first hill doesn't belong to the Lord and the cattle
- 5:09on it don't belong to him. It means all of them.
- 5:12God is going to end Satan's use of Rome permanently,
- 5:18finally.
- 5:21Doesn't mean Satan will never attack the Christians again,
- 5:23never persecute them with a r a government again.
- 5:25It means this saga is over.
- 5:30You know, sometimes when you watch movies,
- 5:33especially in the last probably 30 or 40 years,
- 5:38~ certain certain movies, if if it did well enough on the first one,
- 5:43they're going to make three. Right?
- 5:45So everybody signed a contract for three if the first one sells well enough.
- 5:50And s there are times you get to the end of the third,
- 5:52like, okay, but there's more stories.
- 5:54Surely there's something else to happen.
- 5:57And you know, depending on how much money they make,
- 6:00they may make three more. And they may make three more.
- 6:03Star Wars. ~ but the fact of the matter is you're like,
- 6:07well, there's got to be more story because there's there's things that just
- 6:10got introduced in the last movie.
- 6:12Well, here in Revelation 20,
- 6:1621, 22, there is more story.
- 6:21There is more to be known about the church and what would follow from these events.
- 6:26But there's a context to the story.
- 6:30And the context is limited
- 6:34to the events of the first century church with Rome.
- 6:40What we learn from that is altogether different.
- 6:46That is something that is timeless.
- 6:50There's a passage over in 1 Corinthians chapter 10 where Paul is going
- 6:55to write about the events of the very first generation that came out of Egypt.
- 7:00So here's Paul in the first century writing to the Christians,
- 7:06and he is going to tell the Christians in Corinth,
- 7:10most of which were not even Jews.
- 7:14He's going to tell the Christians in Corinth.
- 7:19That the events that happened to the first generation of people that came
- 7:24out of Egypt happened so that we could learn lessons.
- 7:29So that we might learn not to lust after the things that they lusted after.
- 7:35So that we might learn not to be unfaithful to the Lord once the Lord
- 7:41has redeemed us. Now, true or false.
- 7:46The things that happened to the first generation of Israelites that came
- 7:50out of Egypt actually happened to teach them lessons too.
- 7:57First and foremost, it happened to teach them lessons.
- 8:00But that doesn't negate the fact that by inspiration,
- 8:04Paul says these things happened for us.
- 8:06So that we might know not to do the same things they did.
- 8:11Completely appropriate for us to learn the lessons.
- 8:17The timeless lessons from the events of the first generation
- 8:24of Israelites that came out of Egypt.
- 8:26Completely appropriate, biblically appropriate for us to learn those lessons
- 8:30and apply those lessons to our lives.
- 8:32And it's equally appropriate for us to learn the lessons from
- 8:37the first generation of Christians that lived through a persecution in Rome as well.
- 8:45What we shouldn't do is the same thing that Paul didn't indicate
- 8:50the Christians should do. Paul didn't tell the Christians,
- 8:54now, there's going to be a bondage,
- 8:58and you're going to go through it,
- 8:59generation after generation after generation,
- 9:02and then God's going to bring you out through a series of plagues and
- 9:06a series of miracles, and you're going to walk through the Red Sea just like they
- 9:10did. Paul didn't say that.
- 9:14Rather, Paul said, You're going to go through this spiritually.
- 9:18You're going to have to apply this spiritually.
- 9:22You're going to have to learn the lessons from their circumstances.
- 9:28And we have to do the same thing with Revelation.
- 9:31So, verse 1 the one who has the keys is Christ,
- 9:36all the way back to chapter 1,
- 9:37verse 18, chapter 9, verse 1. ~ And so Christ gives authority,
- 9:41the keys.
- 9:43~ bottomless pit is ~ guarded up with a great chain.
- 9:48The one who is the dragon, the devil's bound for a thousand years,
- 9:51he's thrown in the bottomless pit.
- 9:52Verses two and three, the devil's done in his use at Rome.
- 9:55~ verses five through ten, there's a thousand years that the Christians
- 10:01are going to reign with Christ.
- 10:03The same thousand years, complete amount of time that Satan's going to be bound,
- 10:08the Christians are going to reign.
- 10:10Even those that
- 10:12were killed. Even those that Satan seemed to have defeated are going
- 10:18to live again and they're going to reign with Christ.
- 10:22Now we may mention again, just for the sake of reminder,
- 10:26this passage says nothing about how long Christ is going to reign.
- 10:30Even if you were to turn the thousand years into a literal amount of time,
- 10:34it still says nothing about how long Christ is going to reign.
- 10:37It only says how long the Christians are going to reign with Christ
- 10:42Christ.
- 10:45I also th thought about something else when it came to a thousand years.
- 10:47I was thinking about this this morning on the way here.
- 10:53Think back in the scripture.
- 10:56What's the longest amount of time that we have record of anyone living on the earth?
- 11:05Nine hundred and sixty-nine years.
- 11:07Who was it? Methuselah. Adam lived to be nine hundred and fifty years.
- 11:13Methuselah nine hundred and sixty-nine years.
- 11:15The Christians are said to reign for how long?
- 11:19Thousand years.
- 11:24Just a thought there for a moment.
- 11:26God says, I can make you live,
- 11:29and I can make you reign faithful with me longer than anybody's ever walked this
- 11:35earth. Just a just a thought lesson there.
- 11:38So then we see the devil isn't thrown in the fire,
- 11:42but God tells his people their future is secure.
- 11:45Now, in Ezekiel chapter 38 and 39,
- 11:49God is going to tell the Israelites of old about
- 11:53A great nation that's going to come against them,
- 11:56Gog and Magog. And there's no historical event that it corresponds to.
- 12:02There's no moment in time in Israel's history from that point
- 12:08of Ezekiel's day all the way forward till today,
- 12:10or ever will there be, where there is a Gog and Magog that are going
- 12:15to come physically against Israel in the multitudes that are presented.
- 12:22In Ezekiel.
- 12:25So you have to ask yourself a question.
- 12:29Was Ezekiel wrong? Was was God by inspiration incorrect when
- 12:35he told Ezekiel to prophesy what Ezekiel prophesied in Ezekiel thirty eight
- 12:39and thirty nine? And the answer's no.
- 12:44And if Ezekiel wasn't wrong, is John wrong?
- 12:49Cause John is going to tell us again about Gog and Magog.
- 12:52Verse seven Now when the thousand years have expired,
- 12:54Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive
- 12:58the nations which are in the four corners of the earth,
- 13:00Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle,
- 13:04whose number is as the sand of the sea.
- 13:07They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints,
- 13:12and the beloved city, and fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.
- 13:20There's a great battle scene that arrives.
- 13:25And it's this nation that Ezekiel prophesied about.
- 13:29This nation that is the culmination of nations,
- 13:34this nation that is the multitudes that are innumerable on the earth,
- 13:39and they're all coming against God's people,
- 13:42and they all surround one single city.
- 13:51And they lose.
- 13:54And they don't lose because they're overwhelmed by God's people.
- 13:59They don't lose because God's people outnumber them.
- 14:03They lose because God says,
- 14:07you lose.
- 14:11The message here is not about a historical event.
- 14:15The message in Ezekiel wasn't about a historical event.
- 14:19The message in Ezekiel and the message in Revelation 20 are about the fact that
- 14:25God will defeat every enemy of his people every time.
- 14:35So the Christians don't have anything to worry about.
- 14:38The Christians are secure if they're faithful to the Lord.
- 14:43So verse ten says the devil who deceived them was cast in the lake
- 14:48of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are,
- 14:51and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
- 14:56Now, this is Isaiah's language.
- 14:58This is Isaiah's language of the time of the return of Israel.
- 15:03God's enemies are going to be cast into the lake of fire.
- 15:06Edom was cast into the lake of fire.
- 15:10This is Jerusalem language.
- 15:15Because the lake of fire was a picture that
- 15:20the Jews could visualize.
- 15:26Because it was the valley of Hinnam outside where they burned the trash.
- 15:32Where the refuse went. God says,
- 15:35I'm not only going to defeat them,
- 15:37I'm going to take the one who deceived them,
- 15:40and I'm going to put him in the trash pile.
- 15:46Then I saw a great white throne,
- 15:48him who sat on it, verse eleven,
- 15:49from whose face the earth and heaven fled away.
- 15:54Notice you have this picture
- 16:03Of heaven and earth fleeing the face of God.
- 16:10Who created heaven and earth?
- 16:15When we are opening Psalm nineteen and we read,
- 16:18the heavens declare the glory of God,
- 16:20and the firmament shows his handiwork,
- 16:21day unto day under his speech,
- 16:22night unto night showeth knowledge,
- 16:24who whose glory does the earth and the heavens
- 16:30and the universe declare? God.
- 16:34So so why would the heaven and earth flee away?
- 16:40The picture here is kind of like this.
- 16:48The world, so inundated with evil,
- 16:51gets every nation under heaven to come against God's people.
- 16:57And God wipes them all out. Well,
- 17:01if every nation under heaven came against God's people and God destroyed them with
- 17:06fire, what's left of the earth?
- 17:10Not much.
- 17:13God says, That's okay. I've dealt with this before.
- 17:16I'll make a new one.
- 17:20When in history, in actual events of history,
- 17:25did God take an earth that was covered with evil and make a new one?
- 17:31During Noah's time. Did he implode the suns and take take the planet back
- 17:38to molecules in order to do it?
- 17:39No. And was the world perfectly sinless
- 17:46afterwards? No, you don't even get Noah out of that event perfectly sinless,
- 17:52do you?
- 17:55The picture is like what Isaiah was told when God says,
- 18:01I'm going to bring back my people to their city,
- 18:03I'm going to bring them back to their nation,
- 18:05and I'm going to remake the world.
- 18:07I'm going to start all over again.
- 18:10I'm going to give you a new heavens and a new earth.
- 18:12That's Isaiah sixty five and sixty six.
- 18:18And I'm going to do it by the word of my power.
- 18:21I made it the first time. I made it again in Noah's day.
- 18:26I made it again in Israel's day.
- 18:29No, make it again. I'm going to restructure the planet.
- 18:34Because I'm in charge. Now here's where the contrast is.
- 18:42Could Caesar sitting in Rome fold up the mountains?
- 18:52Could he make the oceans go away?
- 18:55Could could could he just declare to the stars,
- 18:57you know what? I'm done with you.
- 18:59Don't shine anymore.
- 19:03Could he stop the sun from rising?
- 19:07Could he make a day last more than a day?
- 19:12Who did all of those things? God did.
- 19:15The point is not that God's going to wipe the planet away,
- 19:21take everything back to the elements,
- 19:23remake it, and drop his people back on it.
- 19:27The point is God has complete
- 19:31and entire authority over all of it.
- 19:35In contrast to the devil,
- 19:39to Satan, to the beast, to the ~ the sea beast,
- 19:43to Caesar, none of them have authority over any of it.
- 19:51Saw a great white throne, him who sat on it,
- 19:54whose face ~ from whose faith heaven and earth fled away,
- 19:58and there was found no place for them.
- 20:00And I saw the dead, small and great,
- 20:03standing before God, and books were opened,
- 20:05and another book was opened, which is the book of life,
- 20:08and the dead were judged according to their works by the things which were written
- 20:11in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it.
- 20:15Now, the sea
- 20:20Here is much like heaven and earth.
- 20:24This isn't a resurrection of all the sailors that got dropped off in
- 20:27the ocean along the way and got buried in Davy Jones locker.
- 20:34The sea is the place where the sea beast came out of.
- 20:36The sea is the place where the nations came out of that opposed God's people.
- 20:42The sea in the prophets is almost always a representation of the nations
- 20:48of the Gentiles.
- 20:52They're the ones who show up across the sea on boats.
- 20:58God says, I'm not missing anybody.
- 21:00Heaven, earth, the sea, got them all.
- 21:04All of Satan's tools are going to be judged.
- 21:10The sea gave up the dead who were in it.
- 21:14Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them.
- 21:17And they were judged, each according to his works.
- 21:21Then death and Hades were cast in the lake of fire.
- 21:24This is the second death.
- 21:28When you kill death, you've done something.
- 21:35When you cast death into judgment,
- 21:37you've done something. But bear in mind that Hades
- 21:44and the grave, or death and Hades,
- 21:46rather, were characters in the vision.
- 21:51We saw them in chapter six. They were riding on a horse.
- 21:54They were part of the persecution.
- 21:57God says, I'm going to judge you for what you did.
- 21:59I'm going to judge you for those who you
- 22:02destroyed. I'm gonna judge you for those who you persecuted.
- 22:07And anyone not found in the book of life was cast in the lake of fire.
- 22:16The picture teaches us something about the day of judgment,
- 22:22doesn't it?
- 22:26When Jesus sent his disciples out on that missionary journey,
- 22:31and or sorry, when when he sent his disciples out into the cities of Israel,
- 22:37and they came back and they were all excited because they
- 22:42had performed great miracles. They had healed the sick.
- 22:46The demons were even subject to their word.
- 22:52And they come back to Jesus and they're telling Jesus about all the things that they
- 22:56were able to accomplish while they were out on their own and he wasn't with them.
- 23:03And Jesus will praise them for those things,
- 23:06but he will remind them.
- 23:09Take joy that your name is written in the book of life.
- 23:18Jesus says, all that's great. But here's something that's more important.
- 23:23You make sure that your name is
- 23:28in God's records as one of the faithful.
- 23:31Because if the demons are subject to you,
- 23:35hmm, seems like I remember Paul saying something about this.
- 23:39If the demons are subject to you,
- 23:40if you can by faith tell a mountain to go cast itself into the sea,
- 23:44and you have not.
- 23:47Love, you're nothing.
- 23:52They were impressed with the things that they had never been able to do before,
- 23:55that God had given them the ability to do,
- 23:57and Jesus is just reminding them,
- 23:59all of those things are great.
- 24:01Don't get them out of proportion with the thing that matters,
- 24:04and that is being in a right relationship with God.
- 24:12So, do we learn lessons about the day of judgment from this?
- 24:15Yes. Absolutely. Is this picture the picture of the final day?
- 24:21No. Does it inform us about the final day?
- 24:25Sure. Does it tell us how it's going to turn out?
- 24:29Absolutely. It's going to turn out where God's people are going to be blessed,
- 24:34Satan's people are going to be destroyed,
- 24:37and God is going to judge those who
- 24:40who walk this earth based upon what they've done while they were on the earth.
- 24:45Chapter twenty one. We're not going to dwell significantly
- 24:51on twenty one or twenty two. We're going to just spend the rest
- 24:55of today and probably next week in the
- 25:00But if you wanted to take chapter the end of chapter 20 and make it literal,
- 25:05final day of judgment, an event that occurs right after
- 25:12God has figuratively described many things,
- 25:15then you're gonna get in chapter 21,
- 25:18you're gonna have to deal with,
- 25:20well, if that's literal, then so isn't this?
- 25:25And so many will try and say, Well,
- 25:27this is a picture of heaven.
- 25:32Except John tells us it's not.
- 25:37Now, for the same reason that we've just discussed about all of the things that
- 25:43we can learn from chapter 20 about that final day.
- 25:48The lessons we can learn because they went through it first.
- 25:54We can learn the same things about eternity and heaven
- 25:59and fellowship with God from chapter 21 and 22.
- 26:04But we must let the text speak for itself.
- 26:07We must let the context demand what the context demands.
- 26:11So we open up chapter 21, and I saw a new heaven and a new earth.
- 26:16For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away,
- 26:20and there was no more sea. First thing you gotta deal with
- 26:24if this is an eternal,
- 26:28glorified heaven and earth.
- 26:32The home of the saints for eternity,
- 26:35we're going to be living on a planet with no water.
- 26:41Ask Mars how that works out.
- 26:45We just spent ~ over in North Carolina we homeschooling camp that we went to,
- 26:49we spent an entire week talking about the universe and astronomy and planets
- 26:55and you know, one of the unique things about this particular ball we live on.
- 27:03Or the C's.
- 27:07Yeah, the vast majority of the planet is covered in water,
- 27:11and that's the difference between a living planet and a dead one.
- 27:18So if this is a picture of the new heavens and the new earth where
- 27:24all of us who are Christians live forever,
- 27:28according to some.
- 27:33Then John was certainly right,
- 27:35we don't know what we'll be like because we're going to be able
- 27:38to live without water.
- 27:43That's not the point, is it? The seas in Revelation don't picture the water
- 27:48on the planet, do they? They picture the nations of the enemies of God.
- 27:55And God says, they're not there.
- 28:00Your enemies aren't there anymore.
- 28:01I took care of them.
- 28:06He says, chapter 21, verse 1, I saw a new heaven and a new earth,
- 28:09for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away,
- 28:11and there were no more sea. Then I,
- 28:14John, saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem,
- 28:16coming down out of heaven from God,
- 28:19prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
- 28:23The second thing that we notice
- 28:28is that John explicitly says, This is not heaven.
- 28:35John says, I didn't see heaven.
- 28:39I saw this descending.
- 28:44Heaven.
- 28:50So John sees a new heaven and a new earth.
- 28:54And there's no water. And then John sees a new city,
- 28:59a new Jerusalem, and it's descending
- 29:05out of heaven.
- 29:12But it is arrayed like something John
- 29:18recognizes.
- 29:21What's it arrayed like?
- 29:26Like a bride.
- 29:30Who's the bride of Christ? The church.
- 29:33Now you say, Well, well, yes, but here it he it's just an analogy.
- 29:38It's l it it arrived with the fanfare.
- 29:42It arrived with the rejoicing,
- 29:45the way the bride arrives at the ceremony.
- 29:47It it's it's an analogy. Okay.
- 29:49All right. You might be able to get the analogy out of verse two.
- 29:53You're not gonna get it out of verse nine.
- 29:57Because verse nine, then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with
- 30:01seven plagues came to me and talked with me,
- 30:04saying, Come, I will show you the bride,
- 30:10the lamb's wife. And then he's going to proceed to show him the city.
- 30:18So the analogy is more than just an analogy of entrance.
- 30:21It's the bride.
- 30:24When the book tells us what something is,
- 30:28what is it?
- 30:31Exactly what it says it is. When John sees the New Jerusalem coming out of heaven,
- 30:37what is it? It's the bride of Christ.
- 30:43Now notice I heard a loud voice from heaven saying,
- 30:47Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men.
- 30:53If we were to go searching in the plain spoken portions of the
- 30:58New Testament about the tabernacle and the typology between the tabernacle,
- 31:04what was the tabernacle a type of?
- 31:11It was a tent, it was a temporary dwelling place for the people of God,
- 31:17it was a type of the church.
- 31:25It was a picture in the Old Testament
- 31:31of the real thing.
- 31:37And that picture on earth is a picture of eternity.
- 31:46So he says, Let me introduce you.
- 31:51To the dwelling place, the communion place of God with men.
- 31:58That's what the tabernacle was.
- 31:59The tabernacle was the place where all Israel came together to be in
- 32:04the presence of God.
- 32:08And the bride is the place where all the people come together to be
- 32:13in the presence of God.
- 32:18And it's the jerk.
- 32:21He says, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men,
- 32:25and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people.
- 32:29God himself will be with them and be their God.
- 32:32This is Old Testament Israel language.
- 32:38Of God giving the tabernacle to Israel and saying,
- 32:40I will be your God and you will be my people.
- 32:43And I will put my name with you,
- 32:47and I will give you my name, and you will dwell with me,
- 32:51and you will commune with me.
- 32:57God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
- 33:03We sing a song, it's in our songbooks.
- 33:06No tears in my life.
- 33:14This is one of those moments where we say,
- 33:15you know what? The lessons learned are appropriate.
- 33:20But don't be confused.
- 33:24There's no tears here either.
- 33:28Actually, wait, wait, wait, wait a minute.
- 33:29~ I read the book. ~ read around Revelation chapter six.
- 33:35There were some souls under the altars crying out,
- 33:39How long, O Lord, faithful and true.
- 33:43Don't you think there were probably some tears?
- 33:49When those who were faithful to God were beheaded for the cause of Christ,
- 33:53were killed for the cause of Christ,
- 33:56were persecuted for the cause of Christ,
- 33:58do you think there were probably some tears?
- 34:00Yeah. Yep.
- 34:06So how is it that there's not going to be any more tears?
- 34:10How can we have a physical earthly existence where there are no tears?
- 35:09All right. Turn to first John chapter one.
- 35:16As Eddie pointed out, this isn't about physical tears.
- 35:21This is about something that Paul would write about in First Corinthians chapter
- 35:26fifteen.
- 35:29Do people die? Yeah. Do we grieve?
- 35:33Yes. But Paul says, we don't grieve as those who have no hope.
- 35:39~
- 35:44We mourn over separation, knowing it's temporary.
- 35:48You Think about David when his child was sick
- 35:54and nigh into death as a result of David's own sin.
- 35:58And David fasted and prayed and mourned and grieved
- 36:04all the way up until the point where the child did what?
- 36:07Died. Died.
- 36:10Then David got up, washed his face,
- 36:12washed himself, sat down and ate.
- 36:14And all of his servants were confused.
- 36:20Why did you stop grieving when the child died?
- 36:23But you were grieving when the child was alive.
- 36:30David said, He's gone. Paraphrasing.
- 36:34But I can go to him.
- 36:38While he was alive, I could plead for him to be able to remain.
- 36:45Now that he's gone, I don't have to grieve now.
- 36:48I know where he is, and I can go to him.
- 36:53John will write in first John chapter one that which was from the beginning,
- 36:57which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,
- 36:59which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled concerning the word of life.
- 37:02The life was manifested, and we have seen,
- 37:06and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life was with the Father,
- 37:09and was manifested in us, that which we have seen and heard,
- 37:13we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us,
- 37:16and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son,
- 37:19Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you.
- 37:28That your joy may be full.
- 37:39John introduced his letter of first John saying,
- 37:44I'm going to write you these things so that you don't have to mourn ever again.
- 37:54So that your joy may be absolutely complete.
- 38:02And then he's going write to them about the fact that they're going to sin.
- 38:05And they're going to need forgiveness.
- 38:07And they're going to need, but he's writing to them to tell them that their
- 38:14fellowship with God, their oneness with God,
- 38:18is perfect in Christ.
- 38:24Because Christ did come. He did live.
- 38:28He did walk this earth. He did die.
- 38:31He is the propitiation. His blood does cleanse us from all sins.
- 38:35And therefore we do not grieve.
- 38:42The way we would if we had no hope,
- 38:45Eddie.
- 39:21Yeah. Absolutely.
- 39:25We're gonna read in verse four of chapter twenty-one.
- 39:28God's going to wipe away every tear from their eyes.
- 39:32There should be no more death,
- 39:33nor sorrow, nor crying. There should be no more pain,
- 39:36for the former things have passed away.
- 39:41The message here about the tears and the mourning and the grief and
- 39:47the sorrow is the grief and sorrow and tears
- 39:52of the tribulation they've gone through.
- 39:57God says, I've dealt with it. You cried out and said,
- 40:02How long, O Lord, till you deal with it?
- 40:04And the answer is, I dealt with it so completely you have no memory of it.
- 40:12There's nothing to cry about. Everybody you thought was dead's alive now.
- 40:16Everybody you thought was defeated,
- 40:18was beheaded, was sacrificed for the cause of Christ,
- 40:21they're alive. Not physically walking the earth,
- 40:27they're victorious with Christ.
- 40:29So what do you have to cry about?
- 40:32There's no everybody you thought was dead's not.
- 40:35Everybody you thought had been killed for the cause of Christ and
- 40:39for the testimony of Christ.
- 40:41Is alive. Who you could cry about?
- 40:46See, the context is just like the context in Isaiah when Isaiah says these exact
- 40:53same words.
- 40:55Isaiah is going to tell Israel,
- 40:57there's going to be a time when you're going to return from Babylonian captivity
- 41:01and you're not going to weep anymore.
- 41:05God's gonna wipe away all tears.
- 41:07There's not gonna be any more death.
- 41:10There's not gonna be any more crying.
- 41:12There's not gonna any war. Because God's going to have put aside
- 41:17the old world and all of its troubles.
- 41:20And he's gonna make a new thing in Israel.
- 41:25And John's going to use Isaiah's terminology.
- 41:28Verse 5: then he who sat on the throne said.
- 41:34Behold, I make all things new.
- 41:36And he said to me, Write, for these words are true and faithful.
- 41:40And he said to me, It is done.
- 41:43I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.
- 41:46I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.
- 41:55Have you noticed we've got a problem?
- 42:00Cause this new world, if it's a physical literal one,
- 42:04has no Cs, but it has a fountain.
- 42:13N'a gonna work out.
- 42:18When we try to insist that the text means something that the text doesn't ever
- 42:24say it means, we're gonna have problems because the text is gonna stand
- 42:28up and whop us.
- 42:32For not letting the text talk for itself.
- 42:34In this new world,
- 42:37God says, I made a fountain of the water of life.
- 42:45Now I seem to remember there was someone who spoke about that fountain while sitting
- 42:51at a well.
- 42:54And he told a lady who was needing water that
- 43:01if she would just partake of the water that he could give her,
- 43:05she'd never thirst again.
- 43:10And she did the same thing we're often tempted to do with Revelation twenty one.
- 43:14She says, Great. Hand me the water.
- 43:18I don't ever want to have to come to this well and draw water ever again.
- 43:23She took what God was talking about spiritually and she wanted to make it physical.
- 43:32We do the same thing with Revelation twenty one.
- 43:37We take the lessons that God is teaching the first century church about their
- 43:41existence after God defeats all of their enemies.
- 43:45And we say, that's what heaven's gonna be like.
- 43:54Here's what heaven's gonna be like.
- 43:55John wrote very explicitly about it.
- 43:59It's in 1 John chapter 3.
- 44:08First John chapter three verse one Behold what manner of love
- 44:12the Father has bestowed on us that we should be called children of God.
- 44:16Therefore the world does not know us because it did not know him.
- 44:20Beloved, now we are the children of God,
- 44:23and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be,
- 44:27but we know that when he is revealed we shall be like him,
- 44:33for we shall see him as he is.
- 44:37And everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself just as he is pure.
- 44:43That is the single most explicit statement
- 44:49of John about what eternity will be like.
- 44:52His answer is, I have no idea.
- 45:02I can give you only one piece of information about
- 45:07our eternal existence.
- 45:13Will be like Christ.
- 45:18For we'll see him as is.
- 45:26Now remember this one message.
- 45:30No man has seen God at any time.
- 45:38What's that tell us? That tells us that we've seen manifestation of God,
- 45:43we've seen Christ, we've seen,
- 45:45as Paul, as John points out, we handled him,
- 45:47we we we saw him, we touched him.
- 45:49We saw a manifestation of God as Paul ~
- 45:55as ~ Christ appeared to Saul of Tarsus on the road.
- 45:58We see a manifestation of God as John describes him,
- 46:02as he sees him here in the vision.
- 46:05But the text of scripture is incredibly clear.
- 46:08No man has seen God at any time.
- 46:18And John tells us why.
- 46:21'Cause we're not like him. Yet.
- 46:25But we will be. That's John's explanation of heaven.
- 46:30The rest of this is John's explanation of victory in the church.
- 46:36Thank you for your attention.
