  SPEAKER_00: We writers often talk about the reasons we write, but what are the reasons we don't write?

  SPEAKER_00: What keeps us from writing?

  SPEAKER_00: Several things probably come to mind.

  SPEAKER_00: Things like procrastination, not having enough time, not feeling creative, among other reasons.

  SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, there's one main thing that can keep us from writing.

  SPEAKER_00: The novelist Erica Jong hit the nail on the head when she said, I went for years not finishing anything.

  SPEAKER_00: Because, of course, when you finish something, you can be judged.

  SPEAKER_00: Now, we're all writers here and we all understand each other, so let's take a moment for some honesty.

  SPEAKER_00: Is there someone in your life you're afraid of disappointing with your writing?

  SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a parent or a sibling.

  SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a teacher.

  SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a friend of yours who has a popular blog or has had some books published.

  SPEAKER_00: Now imagine that you put your writing out there and that person doesn't like it.

  SPEAKER_00: Maybe they express some kind of disappointment or even leave a bad review on Amazon.

  SPEAKER_00: Then they move on with their life and they promptly forget about it.

  SPEAKER_00: But that's about the extent of it.

  SPEAKER_00: At its worst, being judged by somebody just means that our writing is not for them.

  SPEAKER_00: Yet in our minds, we're terrified of not being liked, we're terrified of disappointing somebody.

  SPEAKER_00: We let this fear of being judged by one person keep us from writing things that 99 other people will love.

  SPEAKER_00: So finish your writing.

  SPEAKER_00: Do the work.

  SPEAKER_00: Chances are pretty high that the 99 will love it.

  SPEAKER_00: And the one person who might not like it?

  SPEAKER_00: Well, that means it just wasn't for them.
