- 0:29I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 107 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:32I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: So our word or phrase of this episode will be a word, and it is the word delve, delve, like, let's delve into this.
- 0:43I Hate Talking: That's exactly right, yeah, OK, which I thought you were gonna say now.
- 0:48I Hate Talking: Well, I don't know, we'll have to check the exact definition, but it seems that this word delve has replaced the phrase dive in.
- 0:57I Hate Talking: OK, yeah, I believe it, cause even when I said that, the second I saw your face, I was like, oh no, it's dive, dive in, you're gonna correct me.
- 1:08I Hate Talking: But I was correct, and for some reason, that was my first instinct was delve in.
- 1:13I Hate Talking: Yes delve into it.
- 1:15I Hate Talking: Yes, dive in, maybe correct for now, but it seems that delve is overtaking.
- 1:22I Hate Talking: Dive in.
- 1:24I Hate Talking: OK, well, tell me about it because I know delve, and that's the phrase I would use.
- 1:29I Hate Talking: Is it like a cultural or a linguistic like area?
- 1:34I Hate Talking: No, it's actually AI.
- 1:36I Hate Talking: So it seems like this podcast we talk about AI quite frequently, but lately, yeah.
- 1:42I Hate Talking: Nonetheless that we know of.
- 1:45I Hate Talking: I guess it depends if you subscribe to the simulation theory or not.
- 1:52I Hate Talking: I severed.
- 1:54I Hate Talking: Oh, that's such a good show like wait for it to come back.
- 1:58I Hate Talking: Yeah, more like the Matrix probably would be a better.
- 2:02I Hate Talking: Movie, show description of.
- 2:06I Hate Talking: The theory of AI not AI delve and dive.
- 2:14I Hate Talking: No.
- 2:15I Hate Talking: Simulation theory.
- 2:18I Hate Talking: OK.
- 2:19I Hate Talking: Severed is borderline simulation theory, -- I -- suppose.
- 2:24I Hate Talking: It's good, but it's not simulated environment, right?
- 2:26I Hate Talking: You're still in your physical environment.
- 2:28I Hate Talking: You're just in a different mind, right, right.
- 2:33I Hate Talking: So anyway, the theory on Delve and how that has become more popular is from a short clip that I saw of a larger podcast, and I have not looked up that podcast, so perhaps we can find it afterwards to give appropriate credit and maybe even watch the entire.
- 2:55I Hate Talking: Episode rather than just a clip, but this particular guest on this podcast cites that AI, specifically generative chat, AI and large language models prefer.
- 3:10I Hate Talking: Words with Greek or Latin roots.
- 3:13I Hate Talking: And it will actually substitute more common language that comes from other etymologies like Germanic or French or some of the different mashups that we've discussed in previous episodes, and it will therefore replace those words or phrases with these less used.
- 3:35I Hate Talking: Greek and Latin words, delve being one of them.
- 3:40I Hate Talking: OK, so two things first.
- 3:43I Hate Talking: We kind of joked about being AI, but you definitely prefer freaking Latin.
- 3:50I Hate Talking: Right?
- 3:51I Hate Talking: I do.
- 3:53I Hate Talking: Maybe I will side with AI on this one, and once we look at the definition and etymology.
- 3:58I Hate Talking: I will perhaps be a proponent of using delve, but I think dive in is a more commonly used and probably better understood phrase.
- 4:09I Hate Talking: If you have a pool.
- 4:10I Hate Talking: No, like if we want to dive into this topic, yeah, cause you're like on the edge of the pool and you jump in, you dive into it.
- 4:17I Hate Talking: I guess maybe we'll do a 2 for 1 and we'll look at the etymology and definition of the phrase dive in as well.
- 4:23I Hate Talking: Overly dive into this topic.
- 4:25I Hate Talking: See, I have.
- 4:27I Hate Talking: Hesitancy about using it as like a pure verb.
- 4:32I Hate Talking: Let's delve in.
- 4:33I Hate Talking: Like I could see it more as a past participle or something like we are going to or we delved in, that's really delved into that topic.
- 4:44I Hate Talking: I'd use it.
- 4:45I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think that would be correct, but it still seems a little bit.
- 4:49I Hate Talking: Stutter step for me.
- 4:51I Hate Talking: Unfortunately, now I feel like I'm biased one way or another, but if, if I'm trying to be as unbiased as possible, I think if I'm using the phrase, I'd say, OK, everyone, let's dive in.
- 5:03I Hate Talking: Like, let's do it present tense right now, jump in.
- 5:07I Hate Talking: Or if I'm talking about to a friend like, hey, we posted this podcast, we really delved into that topic.
- 5:14I Hate Talking: Meaning like, so I think I use it past tense, delve in.
- 5:19I Hate Talking: I guess I would.
- 5:21I Hate Talking: Probably be more comfortable using it as a future, like we will delve into this topic.
- 5:27I Hate Talking: No, that doesn't sound right.
- 5:30I Hate Talking: We'll dive in.
- 5:32I Hate Talking: We'll dive in.
- 5:34I Hate Talking: We will dive into this topic.
- 5:36I Hate Talking: But we did really dived into that.
- 5:39I Hate Talking: That doesn't sound right.
- 5:40I Hate Talking: Well, it's because it's Dove.
- 5:41I Hate Talking: Really dove into that topic.
- 5:45I Hate Talking: That still doesn't sound right.
- 5:46I Hate Talking: I, I understand you, you're right.
- 5:49I Hate Talking: OK, it's not dived in, it's dove in.
- 5:52I Hate Talking: Both of those don't sound right.
- 5:54I Hate Talking: We delve into it.
- 5:55I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 5:58I Hate Talking: Well, let's see what our new favorite American Heritage Dictionary has to say about this.
- 6:04I Hate Talking: So they defined delve as a verb, and it actually has 4 different definitions.
- 6:12I Hate Talking: And one of those definitions actually has 3 subdefinitions, so quite a bit to delve into here.
- 6:20I Hate Talking: So number one, to search deeply or laboriously.
- 6:24I Hate Talking: As in, delve through the court records.
- 6:28I Hate Talking: OK.
- 6:29I Hate Talking: So that's something that's a little bit different because you're almost like going through a sorting.
- 6:35I Hate Talking: And that probably would not really fit with dive in.
- 6:39I Hate Talking: That's more like digging into, right?
- 6:42I Hate Talking: I think that's very adjacent.
- 6:44I Hate Talking: Like dive in, like let's jump in and do this.
- 6:47I Hate Talking: Where if you're like sorting through something, you're digging through something.
- 6:51I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 6:53I Hate Talking: Does that make sense?
- 6:55I Hate Talking: That does make sense.
- 6:55I Hate Talking: So maybe that's actually a pro for using dive or dig, OK.
- 7:02I Hate Talking: And then definition number 2 has 3 different subdefinitions.
- 7:08I Hate Talking: So 2A, to research or make inquiries into something.
- 7:12I Hate Talking: So scientists delving into gene regulation is the example.
- 7:16I Hate Talking: 2 B, to undertake an activity or occupation undeterred by difficulty or uncertainty.
- 7:23I Hate Talking: They delved into writing a blog.
- 7:26I Hate Talking: Hm, OK.
- 7:26I Hate Talking: To see, to discuss or explain something, especially in detail, the article delves into the problems facing the banking system.
- 7:37I Hate Talking: OK.
- 7:38I Hate Talking: 3 to enter or move into an area in which movement is difficult.
- 7:43I Hate Talking: Why is that 3?
- 7:44I Hate Talking: Isn't that 4?
- 7:44I Hate Talking: You just give us 4 -- Because I'm tracking in my head how many -- there's 12, A, -- 2 B -- 2 C, A, B, and C, OK.
- 7:54I Hate Talking: Oh, my numbers are messed up now.
- 7:57I Hate Talking: OK, so 3A is to enter or move into an area in which movement is difficult.
- 8:05I Hate Talking: The explorers delved into the forest.
- 8:08I Hate Talking: OK.
- 8:09I Hate Talking: And then 4 is to dig the ground as with a spade, which comes from an archaic use of the word to dig.
- 8:18I Hate Talking: So if I'm hearing those now, I might have messed these up because there's like A's and B's mixed in with 12, 3s, but 2B to me seemed like the proper, you could swap dive, like, jump in, there's a pool of water, jump in, full body, get covered with water.
- 8:43I Hate Talking: Every other 112, A, 3 and 4, to me I'll seem like Doug.
- 8:51I Hate Talking: It's more appropriate, like you were digging, like you're searching for something and you're like, hands only looking through a bunch of dirt to try to get to a topic.
- 9:03I Hate Talking: Does that sound right to you?
- 9:05I Hate Talking: Do you agree with that?
- 9:06I Hate Talking: That the 2B.
- 9:08I Hate Talking: No, 20 no, yeah, so research or make inquiries into something is which one.
- 9:14I Hate Talking: 2 2A.
- 9:16I Hate Talking: Yes, so 2B is like full body.
- 9:19I Hate Talking: I'm in it, because once you dive into a pool, you are literally over your head in water.
- 9:26I Hate Talking: You can't dive in.
- 9:27I Hate Talking: Unless it's really shallow and then you're really hurt, right?
- 9:32I Hate Talking: So diving in means you're fully in over your head.
- 9:36I Hate Talking: Entire bodies committed to this, but if you're digging.
- 9:41I Hate Talking: You can go as deep as you want and still not get fully into it.
- 9:47I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 9:49I Hate Talking: So I feel like out of those 5 you gave, 4 of them were more into digging as far as you want to go, where 1 was a full commitment.
- 9:59I Hate Talking: Yes, I suppose so.
- 10:01I Hate Talking: So I don't know where I'm going with that.
- 10:03I Hate Talking: I'm just saying those are different.
- 10:05I Hate Talking: They are different, but Delve could cover both of them.
- 10:08I Hate Talking: But for those, Delve seems more intense.
- 10:12I Hate Talking: 4 out of 5 times Delve.
- 10:15I Hate Talking: Was used more appropriately for.
- 10:19I Hate Talking: Dig, yes.
- 10:21I Hate Talking: Which makes sense because that is the origin of the word deth.
- 10:25I Hate Talking: So now I'm questioning these podcasters that had this clip because I did take it at face value.
- 10:31I Hate Talking: It made sense that like AI is going to prefer.
- 10:36I Hate Talking: Greek and Latin, and maybe I misunderstood, but I'm pretty sure I did not because their particular hypothesis is that AI prefers to sound smart and if you use words with Greek or Latin roots that those will typically be quote unquote smarter sounding words, but it seems that the word delve does not actually have any Greek or Latin roots.
- 10:58I Hate Talking: And that it came from.
- 11:00I Hate Talking: English, Old English, and then previously previously to that Old High German and Old Norse.
- 11:08I Hate Talking: Like Norwi, like Norway, Nordic, yes, Norse.
- 11:13I Hate Talking: OK, so.
- 11:15I Hate Talking: The word delve as we use it in the modern English comes from the Old English.
- 11:21I Hate Talking: Delphin, which means to dig.
- 11:24I Hate Talking: And that it is related to similar words in other Germanic languages.
- 11:30I Hate Talking: Where in German it is Telban and in Norse Delta.
- 11:36I Hate Talking: And then it typically referred to the physical act of digging in the 12th century.
- 11:41I Hate Talking: And then over time took on more metaphorical meanings representing thorough investigation or research.
- 11:50I Hate Talking: Mhm.
- 11:51I Hate Talking: So it is more about digging than diving.
- 11:55I Hate Talking: Yes.
- 11:57I Hate Talking: So, their comparison.
- 11:59I Hate Talking: was not even completely accurate because they were comparing dive in versus delve.
- 12:06I Hate Talking: And really, it would be more appropriate to compare, dig in and delve.
- 12:12I Hate Talking: I'll ask my AI right now.
- 12:14I Hate Talking: Um, live, which they think it is.
- 12:19I Hate Talking: Does it come from?
- 12:20I Hate Talking: Dig, or do they come from dive?
- 12:23I Hate Talking: Let's see what they say.
- 12:24I Hate Talking: OK.
- 12:25I Hate Talking: D E L V E.
- 12:28I Hate Talking: OK, this is what Gemini says.
- 12:31I Hate Talking: You ready?
- 12:32I Hate Talking: OK.
- 12:33I Hate Talking: My question prompt for Gemini was, does delve in come from dive in or dug in?
- 12:41I Hate Talking: And it says, the phrase delve in is most closely related to delve.
- 12:49I Hate Talking: Which comes from the Old English word del in, meaning to dig.
- 12:55I Hate Talking: Well, delve in, dive in, and dug in all share a sense of immersion and getting into something deep.
- 13:03I Hate Talking: They have distinct origins and nuance.
- 13:07I Hate Talking: One, delve.
- 13:09I Hate Talking: Is Old English to delve literally means to spade over the earth.
- 13:15I Hate Talking: There's a whole bunch of stuff I'm gonna skip down to dive in.
- 13:20I Hate Talking: Suggest a quick headfirst plunge, referring to a task with high energy or enthusiasm, like diving in a pool.
- 13:30I Hate Talking: Or 3 dug in.
- 13:33I Hate Talking: Which usually implies a state of being firmly established or resistance to change.
- 13:41I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 13:42I Hate Talking: So it uses dig in as sort of taking a firm position on something.
- 13:46I Hate Talking: Mhm.
- 13:47I Hate Talking: Which you've heard, right?
- 13:49I Hate Talking: Like he really dug in his.
- 13:51I Hate Talking: Heels what is that?
- 13:54I Hate Talking: What do you say?
- 13:55I Hate Talking: You say something, right, like you really dug into that, meaning like they're not changing their minds.
- 14:00I Hate Talking: OK, yeah, so that is what Gemini, my Gemini says, which is very different than what The people you were saying.
- 14:09I Hate Talking: We're saying AI sets, Gemini is AI.
- 14:13I Hate Talking: But what is your duck?
- 14:15I Hate Talking: Ask duck, what is it called?
- 14:18I Hate Talking: Duck duck go duck duck.
- 14:19I Hate Talking: OK, by the way, when I've never heard of that in my life until a couple of podcasts ago when you mentioned it.
- 14:27I Hate Talking: Afterwards I asked the kiddos, like, do you know what Google search daddies is?
- 14:32I Hate Talking: And all of them said they use duck ducko.
- 14:36I Hate Talking: I didn't even have to tell them which one it was.
- 14:39I Hate Talking: I was like, What?
- 14:40I Hate Talking: I'm proud of them.
- 14:40I Hate Talking: So without a shadow of a doubt they instantly said -- duck duck -- go without even you prompting them.
- 14:47I Hate Talking: No, I just said, do you know which one Dad likes best?
- 14:50I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 14:51I Hate Talking: I didn't even know it existed.
- 14:54I Hate Talking: And the very following day, all 4 of them admitted that's the search engine they use.
- 14:59I Hate Talking: Well, there you go.
- 15:00I Hate Talking: At least I'm doing something right as a dad.
- 15:01I Hate Talking: It So, American Heritage Dictionary does not have an entry for the phrase dive in.
- 15:10I Hate Talking: It obviously has dive.
- 15:11I Hate Talking: So if we skip down to Cambridge Dictionary because we no longer have access to our old favorite English language dictionary.
- 15:21I Hate Talking: Cambridge Dictionary defines dive in as to start something suddenly and energetically.
- 15:28I Hate Talking: Often without stopping to think.
- 15:31I Hate Talking: Right, I guess which makes sense.
- 15:34I Hate Talking: My Gemini was saying like jumping in quickly with enthusiasm, which isn't how I would have described it.
- 15:41I Hate Talking: But Gemini is saying, yeah, like with enthusiasm quickly, right?
- 15:45I Hate Talking: You're doing this and yours is saying doing it without thinking.
- 15:49I Hate Talking: Yes, suddenly energetically why I can't even say that what -- energetically -- energetically.
- 15:57I Hate Talking: I think you said it fine.
- 15:58I Hate Talking: I don't think so, but it's a, it's probably just a personality trait.
- 16:03I Hate Talking: Anytime I've attempted to dive in.
- 16:07I Hate Talking: It's not ever in genetic.
- 16:10I Hate Talking: Oh no, now you're messing me up.
- 16:14I Hate Talking: Energetically or without thinking, I'm always on the end of the diving board, contemplating it for longer than socially appropriate.
- 16:25I Hate Talking: Yes, so, I think the podcast people in the clip were, are majorly wrong in this.
- 16:33I Hate Talking: So you're saying podcast can be wrong I think so, because they were saying that delve was from Greek and Latin.
- 16:41I Hate Talking: They were saying that delve is used in place of dive in, but as we've done during the course of this discussion, dive in is more with the approach of how you do something, not necessarily what you are doing.
- 16:56I Hate Talking: Now, I still think you can use the phrase dive in as like, you're gonna look deeply into something and do a lot of research, but that actually is not the correct definition, apparently.
- 17:08I Hate Talking: I mean, if we're using it as like enthusiastically, saying like, all right, next week we'll dive into this, like, we're excited, we're gonna do this, right?
- 17:18I Hate Talking: But in general, yes, I agree it's not.
- 17:22I Hate Talking: They were saying, but we're not gonna sit, we're not gonna call them out, are we?
- 17:27I Hate Talking: Because I don't wanna get rivals in the podcast world.
- 17:30I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 17:31I Hate Talking: That's how people get famous in the podcast world, I guess.
- 17:33I Hate Talking: I know.
- 17:33I Hate Talking: I guess it's like that question, right?
- 17:36I Hate Talking: We, we will not get into it on here, but we've had a personal issue where we're like, how far do we get involved in this because it does not affect us.
- 17:46I Hate Talking: But also, we have an opinion.
- 17:50I Hate Talking: In our personal life.
- 17:52I Hate Talking: So it's like that.
- 17:55I Hate Talking: These podcasters, we can just live on with our lives, right?
- 17:58I Hate Talking: Like, are we obligated to warn people that they're wrong?
- 18:02I Hate Talking: Or just let them do their thing.
- 18:05I Hate Talking: I don't, I mean, this, uh, I'll have to go back and watch the clip, but like, they patently are incorrect.
- 18:12I Hate Talking: If they said that Delve is from Greek and Latin, it's like not true at all.
- 18:17I Hate Talking: Do they, have you ever listened to them before?
- 18:20I Hate Talking: No, it's just a clip.
- 18:21I Hate Talking: Oh, OK, because there's a pod, uh, YouTuber I've been super into lately.
- 18:27I Hate Talking: He is called Elephants in Room.
- 18:30I Hate Talking: And he goes into hot button topics.
- 18:33I Hate Talking: He always tries to be unbiased, but he also will say when a bias comes up, and he's every podcast or YouTube episode, he always says, hey, look, if I messed up or got the facts drawn, let me know, and if it's egregious, I will pin it here below.
- 18:51I Hate Talking: So at least that's good for him, right?
- 18:53I Hate Talking: Like he admits that he does have bias, he's trying not to, everyone has a bias, and he is trying not to be.
- 19:00I Hate Talking: But if he messed up or has a bias or whatnot, he will address it.
- 19:05I Hate Talking: Do they have a bias?
- 19:06I Hate Talking: Are they one of them that's willing to listen to correction or listen to an alternative viewpoint, or is it just pointless, and they're gonna spew whatever information they have and hopefully people don't listen.
- 19:24I Hate Talking: Or it aligns with their biases as it did with mine because I was already thinking that AI is changing language and the words that people use because of generative chat AI.
- 19:38I Hate Talking: So the particular podcasters that I was listening to in this clip aligned with my bias against AI because I was thinking that it is eroding the use of words and everything.
- 19:51I Hate Talking: So, AI knows you hate AI.
- 19:54I Hate Talking: And so they're giving you fake AI saying AI is wrong.
- 20:00I Hate Talking: And directing you to correct AI.
- 20:04I Hate Talking: There's a lot of AI in there.
- 20:07I Hate Talking: I, I don't know.
- 20:08I Hate Talking: But do you follow the track?
- 20:11I Hate Talking: So AI is following you and they say, oh, he doesn't trust us.
- 20:16I Hate Talking: Let's tell him these quote unquote people also don't trust AI.
- 20:22I Hate Talking: And then he's gonna find out the people are wrong and the AI is right all along, and then he's gonna love AI.
- 20:32I Hate Talking: Maybe so.
- 20:33I Hate Talking: So I've been looking for the podcast and the clip.
- 20:37I Hate Talking: I cannot find it immediately, but I did find an article on Medium from May of 2024 and Basically, this is an article about how a particular PhD.
- 20:53I Hate Talking: Found that the frequency of the word delve in PubMed articles since the end of 2022 has increased by approximately 400%, which coincides with the rise of chat GBT, end quote.
- 21:07I Hate Talking: So it has a bar graph on there and it shows that it was hardly used through.
- 21:14I Hate Talking: The 1900s saw a slight uptick in the early 2000s and then basically did skyrocket on around 2022, 2023, and 2024.
- 21:25I Hate Talking: That's when AI got popular, is that what they're saying?
- 21:28I Hate Talking: Yeah, that's when generative chatbots became a little bit better at actually generating responses.
- 21:35I Hate Talking: Is there any difference in linguistics with area because I know this doesn't sound nice, but it is true, y'all.
- 21:45I Hate Talking: Right, the fact that that was not planned, the fact that I said y'all, right?
- 21:51I Hate Talking: Like.
- 21:51I Hate Talking: Uh, where we live now, where we used to live, all y'all was a very big comment.
- 21:57I Hate Talking: And I say it here in our new place, and I'm called out on it.
- 22:04I Hate Talking: All y'all is not a common phrase here.
- 22:07I Hate Talking: Right, and I love the South, y'all, so I'm not trying to say anything, but people tend to think highly edu like, you're highly educated, if you speak like, And Englander, right?
- 22:24I Hate Talking: Or like the British.
- 22:25I Hate Talking: And so I feel like Delve would be much more British.
- 22:30I Hate Talking: And high education.
- 22:33I Hate Talking: Then saying Duggan, which it would seem to be more maybe Southern.
- 22:41I Hate Talking: I love the South.
- 22:42I Hate Talking: That's where we've lived for so long and I was heartbroken to move, right?
- 22:46I Hate Talking: So like, Does that make sense?
- 22:48I Hate Talking: Is it more of a.
- 22:50I Hate Talking: Cultural.
- 22:53I Hate Talking: Classes.
- 22:55I Hate Talking: Yeah, is it like a cultural class like delve.
- 23:00I Hate Talking: I delved into it.
- 23:02I Hate Talking: Sounds more elite, and I dived in.
- 23:06I Hate Talking: Right?
- 23:06I Hate Talking: Well, that was the that was the hypothesis of this particular clip that AI is going to prefer words that sound smarter, so delve falls within that category and then it therefore either is in more published material because people are leveraging AI to quote unquote write for them, or it could even change the linguistic behavior of the people reading and listening to that content that hear this word more frequently and then therefore they also use it more frequently.
- 23:37I Hate Talking: So that's the concern is that these particular words are not organically being used by people and that there may be other ones out there, like delve is, I guess, one of the ones that are cited as like a glaring example, but The theory is that AI is using these.
- 24:00I Hate Talking: Preferred words to sound smarter and therefore is changing the linguistic behavior of normal everyday human beings.
- 24:08I Hate Talking: So they're making up terms to sound smarter.
- 24:12I Hate Talking: And then we're mimicking it.
- 24:15I Hate Talking: We're not making up words, they're just using less common words.
- 24:19I Hate Talking: OK, but they're not making them up.
- 24:22I Hate Talking: OK, and some people are more susceptible.
- 24:25I Hate Talking: I know I am, that's, you know, we've lived.
- 24:28I Hate Talking: Pretty much at this point, all around the US.
- 24:33I Hate Talking: And in our 17 years of marriage or whatnot.
- 24:37I Hate Talking: And I am extremely susceptible to the language of those around me.
- 24:44I Hate Talking: So probably in a year or so, I'm not gonna say all y'all, cause that's not said here.
- 24:49I Hate Talking: And everywhere I go, when I return back to where I was, people comment on my accent and the way I speak is so different.
- 24:59I Hate Talking: And I'm, so I know that's a flaw in myself, but also.
- 25:06I Hate Talking: Just part of who I am, that I'm very susceptible.
- 25:10I Hate Talking: As I'm around people a lot, I start mimicking their speech.
- 25:14I Hate Talking: Unintentionally, and it's just what I do.
- 25:18I Hate Talking: I don't think you do that.
- 25:19I Hate Talking: But I definitely do unintentionally.
- 25:23I Hate Talking: So I think that I'm thinking about like AI and how they're smart enough to realize that people are gonna mimic unintentionally these phrases they use.
- 25:33I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think that I will adapt much more quickly to Local culture and their phraseology that they use, even individuals like I will.
- 25:43I Hate Talking: Use words that other people use to Communicate better or fit better in.
- 25:50I Hate Talking: Yes, do you think I do?
- 25:51I Hate Talking: No, you're terrible at that.
- 25:53I Hate Talking: I just said the exact opposite.
- 25:56I Hate Talking: Yeah, but you're, you retain what you have learned for a longer period of time until it changes.
- 26:02I Hate Talking: And so you notice it more.
- 26:05I Hate Talking: Is that the issue?
- 26:06I Hate Talking: Cause I feel like everywhere we go, you're like, why are you saying hot mess or why are you saying all these things?
- 26:13I Hate Talking: And then I'm like, I don't know, cause I'm a hot mess.
- 26:17I Hate Talking: And then I have to be like, oh, that's what so and so says in those phrases.
- 26:21I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 26:23I Hate Talking: So you think I just mix it all up, so then it's super confusing because I'm speaking like a New Englander and a Southerner and a Californian.
- 26:31I Hate Talking: And a Midwest and like all those.
- 26:35I Hate Talking: I think so, yeah, maybe I don't know.
- 26:36I Hate Talking: -- So -- that's you just think that you suddenly jump into whatever culture you are, that's what you speak, where I do a hodgepodge of everything.
- 26:45I Hate Talking: Yes, I've already tabled many Southern phrases that I would have used in the past.
- 26:48I Hate Talking: Really?
- 26:49I Hate Talking: Yeah, OK, but I can't, and I noticed when people look at me when I speak Southern, I'm like, oh.
- 26:56I Hate Talking: That's, yes.
- 26:57I Hate Talking: All y'all is so easy to say.
- 26:59I Hate Talking: Well, maybe we'll, maybe we'll do that as our word or phrase next time because all y'all are different than y'all.
- 27:07I Hate Talking: And I don't know when I started saying all y'all.
- 27:09I Hate Talking: But I know I say it all the time, so I could probably even look back at podcasts and maybe listen to how often I say it.
- 27:17I Hate Talking: Because it never dawned on me that I say it until moving here and people look at me and I go, oh yeah.
- 27:25I Hate Talking: Perhaps for our last thing, we'll just check Google Engram viewer because it's been a while since we've used that to compare, dive in, dug in, and delve.
- 27:35I Hate Talking: OK.
- 27:35I Hate Talking: Are you doing Delve or delve in?
- 27:38I Hate Talking: Just Delve.
- 27:38I Hate Talking: OK, because of my Geminis, I looked up delve in, -- and they said it comes from -- Delve.
- 27:43I Hate Talking: I did dive in, dug in, delve in.
- 27:46I Hate Talking: Delve in has very little usage, but if I take out the I in, then that is actually a greater usage.
- 27:55I Hate Talking: So all of them were relatively flat from 1800 to about 1950, there's some variability there, but not.
- 28:07I Hate Talking: As much as the huge increase in the 2000s.
- 28:12I Hate Talking: So if we zoom in just to 1950.
- 28:16I Hate Talking: To 2022, which this data goes to, why doesn't it go beyond 2022?
- 28:22I Hate Talking: Is Google?
- 28:24I Hate Talking: No, that's interesting.
- 28:26I Hate Talking: That's 4 years.
- 28:27I Hate Talking: That's a long time.
- 28:28I Hate Talking: It's a long time.
- 28:29I Hate Talking: Maybe that's a conspiracy.
- 28:32I Hate Talking: They don't want people to be able to see what words have been increased or decreased since the advent of generative chat.
- 28:40I Hate Talking: conspiracies.
- 28:41I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 28:42I Hate Talking: So, dug in takes a little dip in 1950.
- 28:48I Hate Talking: Everything else is relatively flat.
- 28:50I Hate Talking: Del does Increase greatly from the year 2000 to 2022, and then I guess the big spike in 2023 and 2024 will not be in Google and Gram.
- 29:02I Hate Talking: But the interesting thing to note is that both dive-in and dug-in did increase in the early 2000s.
- 29:10I Hate Talking: Not as steeply as delve.
- 29:13I Hate Talking: -- What do people say before -- that?
- 29:15I Hate Talking: -- There must be another word -- that's -- look -- into it.
- 29:18I Hate Talking: Let's look into it.
- 29:19I Hate Talking: Let's, I don't know, that's great research it, examine it.
- 29:23I Hate Talking: Yes, it's probably any of those above.
- 29:26I Hate Talking: -- We probably -- fancier, -- probably -- can, yeah, I don't know.
- 29:30I Hate Talking: our coming of age was around that time.
- 29:33I Hate Talking: So this is the culture phrasing we would know.
- 29:36I Hate Talking: I, I don't know if I've ever really encountered the word delve until maybe The last few years.
- 29:46I Hate Talking: I really don't recall.
- 29:48I Hate Talking: Seeing that very frequently.
- 29:50I Hate Talking: Like I've heard it and knew the definition, I suppose, but.
- 29:54I Hate Talking: In terms of the way that it is used today in quite a lot of different contexts, not as much, right?
- 30:00I Hate Talking: It's interesting because I don't know if I've ever read it.
- 30:04I Hate Talking: Or experienced it.
- 30:07I Hate Talking: But when you said it tonight, I instantly knew what it was.
- 30:12I Hate Talking: So it's kind of one of those like I don't know the word.
- 30:15I Hate Talking: Oh yes, I do know what it means.
- 30:18I Hate Talking: Indeed, so Perhaps we will talk about y'all or all y'all next time.
- 30:26I Hate Talking: It's so weird.
- 30:27I Hate Talking: That's, I don't know if you ever said that though.
- 30:30I Hate Talking: Do you think you used to say all y'all?
- 30:32I Hate Talking: Because I sounded weird hearing you say it right now.
- 30:34I Hate Talking: Or just because you paused so far away from I had to actually think about it two years ago and hear how you spoke.
- 30:42I Hate Talking: -- Were you more Southern back then -- low dollar.
- 30:45I Hate Talking: Transcripts into AI.
- 30:47I Hate Talking: See if I ever said it.
- 30:48I Hate Talking: That's a lot of work.
- 30:50I Hate Talking: Well, it'll be less work than reading all of them one by one.
- 30:53I Hate Talking: So if you enjoyed.
- 30:58I Hate Talking: This delving in, if all y'all enjoyed this delving into the topic, you can always like share and subscribe and Maybe we'll dive in a different topic next time.
- 31:12I Hate Talking: Or we'll dig into a different subject in the future.
- 31:16I Hate Talking: Yeah, we'll dig in like I don't know what I don't know what we'd say now I'm so confused.
- 31:22I Hate Talking: I'm leaving this podcast more confused than when I started.
- 31:26I Hate Talking: Well, that might be for the best.
- 31:28I Hate Talking: We'll just avoid using any of those three phrases from now on.
- 31:32I Hate Talking: We'll research it and find a new word.
- 31:35I Hate Talking: So, from your friends at I Hate Talking, until next time, remember, it is only through talking that we begin the journey to understanding.
