- 0:48Speaker 4: I'm joined with Rick Cuevedo Coda Cuevedo, aka Pastor Theologian
- 0:53Speaker 4: here in Farmington. Love you guys. Rick's just an overseer
- 0:59Speaker 4: of all of it. He's a headhunt show over there
- 1:02Speaker 4: at mydesert View dot org, your family counseling, and just
- 1:08Speaker 4: love how we pop in through some topics today. Right, So,
- 1:13Speaker 4: welcome to the show, guys, Thank you, good morning. Glad
- 1:17Speaker 4: to be here, Yes, glad to be here.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:20Speaker 4: So, I don't know, Cody, if you want to introduce
- 1:22Speaker 4: our topic and then Rick maybe unpack it a little
- 1:25Speaker 4: bit and I'll see if I'm guilty of being the impostor. Okay, yeah,
- 1:32Speaker 4: absolutely have the imposter syndrome.
- 1:33Speaker 5: Yeah, So for this month, we decided to talk about
- 1:38Speaker 5: a topic known as imposter syndrome. And essentially, imposter syndrome
- 1:43Speaker 5: is a pattern where people doubt their skills, their talents,
- 1:48Speaker 5: their value, their success, and there's this overwhelming fear of
- 1:52Speaker 5: being exposed as a fraud even though they have proved
- 1:57Speaker 5: through their competence, like their experience, and this impolscern often
- 2:03Speaker 5: leads to things like self doubt, perfectionism, over preparation, overworking, comparison, fear, anxiety,
- 2:10Speaker 5: et cetera. So it can lead to a multitude of
- 2:12Speaker 5: different things, and it's something that I think we see
- 2:16Speaker 5: in a lot of different aspects, a lot of different
- 2:19Speaker 5: fields in life of feeling like I'm.
- 2:21Speaker 6: Not good enough to do this, you know, whatever.
- 2:25Speaker 3: It may be. Yeah, that's good, Rick after that.
- 2:30Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, it's definitely a psychiatric type diagnosis and
- 2:35Speaker 7: about seventy percent of all adults have experienced it at
- 2:39Speaker 7: least one time in their lifetime. And you know, we
- 2:42Speaker 7: know that the more we feed our brain the same
- 2:45Speaker 7: information over and over, we definitely start to believe it,
- 2:47Speaker 7: act it, and live it, and so changing that is
- 2:52Speaker 7: a little bit of work.
- 2:54Speaker 8: You can't overcome those thoughts.
- 2:55Speaker 7: But you know, like Cody said, you know, downplaying success
- 2:59Speaker 7: when you are successful, but you know you're downplaying that
- 3:03Speaker 7: and anything that you take on, you know for a
- 3:06Speaker 7: failure that you might fail, even though you know you're
- 3:09Speaker 7: capable of doing it. Perfectionism thinking everything's got to be perfect,
- 3:14Speaker 7: it's got to go absolutely right. There's just a number
- 3:18Speaker 7: of different things that a person could put a lot
- 3:20Speaker 7: of pressure on themselves.
- 3:21Speaker 8: It's not necessary, not necessary.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 3:26Speaker 4: So July thirteenth was eighteen years ago that I got ordained.
- 3:33Speaker 3: To be a pastor.
- 3:35Speaker 4: So never felt qualified, like there was a lot to know, right,
- 3:41Speaker 4: So twenty seven years ago in July, and so when
- 3:46Speaker 4: I first started reading the Bible, and I felt like
- 3:47Speaker 4: God whispered in my ear and help you overcome an
- 3:49Speaker 4: addiction or make you a pastor, and usually to help
- 3:52Speaker 4: other people overcome their addictions. And like I had no
- 3:55Speaker 4: idea what a pastor was. I was a Catholic, I
- 3:56Speaker 4: knew about priests. But I said, I guess I didn't
- 3:58Speaker 4: need to keep reading this book. So long story longer.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Getting plugged into Cavia Chapel for a lot of do
- 4:05Speaker 4: there's Bible studies and listening to some really good preaching
- 4:08Speaker 4: on Man, I want to be a pastor one day,
- 4:10Speaker 4: but I really felt like God says, don't go to seminary,
- 4:12Speaker 4: don't go to Bible college.
- 4:14Speaker 3: And you know, I'm learning there's like two hundred of
- 4:15Speaker 3: them around there.
- 4:16Speaker 4: And just keep doing small, great Bible studies, devotions every morning,
- 4:20Speaker 4: listening to sermons, read.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Your Bible front to cover, front to cover, front to cover.
- 4:24Speaker 4: So seven years in, back to the point where I
- 4:28Speaker 4: was ordained eighteen years ago.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Just again.
- 4:31Speaker 4: We live in a world that wants to see credentials.
- 4:33Speaker 4: They'd like to see certificates on the wall. They like
- 4:35Speaker 4: to have to see the letters after their name. Right,
- 4:38Speaker 4: I believe in a good education. Especially brain surgeons want
- 4:42Speaker 4: to make sure he's.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Right hard surgeons.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Yeah, but there's always been this little voice in the
- 4:49Speaker 4: back of my mind, as somebody might say, you're not
- 4:51Speaker 4: really a pastor, and so I don't know if that
- 4:56Speaker 4: falls into this or but no one's ever called me
- 4:59Speaker 4: out on it that were saying, hey, show me that certificate.
- 5:01Speaker 3: It's up there. But it turned out to.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Be one of the smallest little churches in the crack
- 5:06Speaker 4: town next to the crack house I used to smoke
- 5:09Speaker 4: open seven years earlier, seven years clean, and I felt
- 5:12Speaker 4: like God's like, I'm gonna pick the closest church to
- 5:15Speaker 4: the clrackhouse you used to be stuck in after a
- 5:17Speaker 4: seven year addiction. Seven years clean, We're gonna have a
- 5:19Speaker 4: holy ghost party, and that your testimony is your credentials.
- 5:24Speaker 4: So just to unpack some of that, I don't mind
- 5:27Speaker 4: being the guinea pig here, but there's always this fear.
- 5:30Speaker 3: That again someone's gonna call you out. Are you really?
- 5:32Speaker 4: And you know, you do what you can do, and
- 5:35Speaker 4: you move in the gifts and the callings and whatever
- 5:38Speaker 4: position God gives you. There's that old fakety to make
- 5:40Speaker 4: it concept, I don't know some of my thoughts.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Cody Becker, Yeah, Now I think that's a perfect example, right,
- 5:48Speaker 5: like something that is like a real life example that
- 5:53Speaker 5: we set this standard for ourselves sometimes that is almost
- 5:58Speaker 5: unattainable and because of that state, and it can almost
- 6:01Speaker 5: hinder what God's calling us to do.
- 6:04Speaker 6: What we've you know, what's on our heart to help
- 6:07Speaker 6: to you know.
- 6:08Speaker 5: And I think that there's a big part of this
- 6:10Speaker 5: is spiritual warfare, right is God calls us to different things.
- 6:15Speaker 6: We each you know, first printed twelve.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Every single one of us has talents and gifts and
- 6:20Speaker 5: something to contribute to the body. And we're all vital,
- 6:24Speaker 5: right And Paul even talks about it, can the hand
- 6:28Speaker 5: to the foot or the elbow to the knee, because
- 6:31Speaker 5: they're both important, they both play by a role.
- 6:33Speaker 6: And you know, for those of us who are really.
- 6:37Speaker 5: Walking in our faith, there's always going to be that
- 6:40Speaker 5: voice in the back of your head that you're not
- 6:43Speaker 5: good enough, you're not qualified.
- 6:45Speaker 6: Oh you did this, you did that right, Like, there's
- 6:47Speaker 6: there's always this this, you know. That's why the Bible
- 6:50Speaker 6: refers to the devil as the accuser.
- 6:53Speaker 5: He's constantly accusing us of things, trying to get us
- 6:57Speaker 5: to ultimately fall away from whatever it is that that's
- 7:01Speaker 5: calling us to do.
- 7:02Speaker 6: And that's something that I think is important for us.
- 7:05Speaker 5: To recognize because that spiritual manifests simile physical right. It
- 7:10Speaker 5: can lead to anxiety, it can need to fear, it
- 7:12Speaker 5: can lead to a multitude different things. If you know
- 7:15Speaker 5: you really feeling you're not good enough, then why would
- 7:17Speaker 5: I pursue something Because I'm never going to get to
- 7:19Speaker 5: the level where you know, like Pastor, the pastor, I
- 7:24Speaker 5: could look at it and be like, Pastor, trucks are
- 7:25Speaker 5: more successful than me.
- 7:27Speaker 6: I'm never going to get to his place, so.
- 7:28Speaker 5: What's the point in trying, right, And that's that's where
- 7:32Speaker 5: the comparison comes in and a big, you know, kind
- 7:34Speaker 5: of manifestation of that imposter syndrome.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:38Speaker 7: Yeah, when I was listening to you check it, it kind
- 7:43Speaker 7: of remind me of my story as well.
- 7:45Speaker 8: Twenty three years ago. Starting this place.
- 7:46Speaker 7: It was me and a therapist in a part time secretary,
- 7:51Speaker 7: and you know, even as we grew and expanded, and.
- 7:55Speaker 8: I think that there was always that self doubt. You know.
- 7:58Speaker 7: I started out as a jumani oprovation officer, and when
- 8:02Speaker 7: I switched over to do my masters, I had to
- 8:04Speaker 7: start over because my previous degree just didn't, you know,
- 8:10Speaker 7: follow what I had already did. And when I got
- 8:13Speaker 7: my master's, the next step was to get all my
- 8:16Speaker 7: hours to actually become license. And I was also growing
- 8:21Speaker 7: a business at the same time and and raising a family,
- 8:25Speaker 7: and and I never did get to do those hours,
- 8:28Speaker 7: you know, and why I feel very blessed that we
- 8:33Speaker 7: were able to grow the business in the way that
- 8:34Speaker 7: we have and help as many people we.
- 8:36Speaker 8: Have and hire therapists and all that such.
- 8:40Speaker 7: I've always felt like, I don't know, I didn't finish
- 8:44Speaker 7: that part, you know, And so it's like that I
- 8:46Speaker 7: don't know, not fraud part of me, but you know,
- 8:49Speaker 7: I should have finished that part of me. But at
- 8:52Speaker 7: the same time, I mean, I'm absolutely invested at Cody
- 8:55Speaker 7: and I are always looking at you know.
- 8:58Speaker 8: Best practice. We do clinical superb with our therapists.
- 9:01Speaker 7: I mean we're trying to make sure that they had
- 9:03Speaker 7: the support they need, you know, still living it and
- 9:06Speaker 7: wanting it though, absolutely so I think it's what God
- 9:09Speaker 7: called me to do, right, And that's why we.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Call the show mental health Matters, because what you think matters.
- 9:15Speaker 4: I mean, that's an understatement. You know, what you let
- 9:19Speaker 4: rent space in your head really matters, renew your mind,
- 9:22Speaker 4: renew your life.
- 9:23Speaker 3: So that's how you're going to live it out.
- 9:26Speaker 4: As we're talking to Cody and Rick, I was thinking
- 9:29Speaker 4: about Romans eleven nine, ten and eleven is Paul explaining
- 9:34Speaker 4: why all Jewish people are not safe.
- 9:36Speaker 3: So just a little side note, not to.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Get political, but I know we find ourselves taking sides
- 9:42Speaker 4: Israel against Iran and I heard an interview. One said
- 9:46Speaker 4: Jesus didn't come to take sides. Jesus came to take over.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Jesus is lord, he's lord of all, he's the boss.
- 9:54Speaker 4: He doesn't take science. We take science. But even Israel
- 9:57Speaker 4: to this day, as much as we need to be
- 9:58Speaker 4: pro Israel is in trouble without the Messiah, Without Messiah,
- 10:02Speaker 4: their God's you know, they're they're not saved. So this
- 10:05Speaker 4: whole Romans nine, ten, and eleven kind of unpacks that
- 10:09Speaker 4: that their natural branches are broken off because of one belief.
- 10:12Speaker 4: We be in gentiles or like drafted in by faith,
- 10:17Speaker 4: you know, and don't be haughty, you know, and all
- 10:19Speaker 4: that kind of stuff. This is this great lesson, but
- 10:20Speaker 4: it ends in eleven six with a couple of things.
- 10:24Speaker 4: And I'll just say this here again, maybe even be
- 10:28Speaker 4: off topic a little bit before he goes in twenty five.
- 10:31Speaker 4: And I desire your brethren that you shouldn't be ignorant,
- 10:34Speaker 4: and that's just without knowledge. And that's why we unpack
- 10:36Speaker 4: some of this stuff, because we might be ignorant about
- 10:38Speaker 4: certain topics or syndromes or mental health illness, and we
- 10:42Speaker 4: want to be more educated. Right of this mystery lets
- 10:46Speaker 4: some of you be wise in your own opinion that
- 10:49Speaker 4: blindness and part has happened to Israel, for the fullness
- 10:53Speaker 4: of the Gentiles has come, and so all Israel will
- 10:55Speaker 4: be saved. Right he's concluding, But twenty eight.
- 10:58Speaker 3: This is.
- 11:00Speaker 4: In twenty nine concerning the Gospels and maybe enemies, concerning
- 11:04Speaker 4: the election of loving for the fathers, where the gifts
- 11:06Speaker 4: and callings of God or irrevocal I say all that
- 11:10Speaker 4: to get the twenty nine. I just don't like to
- 11:11Speaker 4: pull a verse out of my hat and just talk
- 11:14Speaker 4: about it too much without leading the context up to it.
- 11:17Speaker 4: But God has gifts and callings, and Cody, you were
- 11:20Speaker 4: alluding to that on your life, Rick, you are called
- 11:23Speaker 4: Ephesians two ten. We are His workmanship created in Christ
- 11:27Speaker 4: for good works. God prepared beforehand that we should walk
- 11:32Speaker 4: in them. So you start doing that. We'll unpack spiritual
- 11:35Speaker 4: warfare next, because the enemy is going to try to
- 11:37Speaker 4: disqualify You're saying you're not good enough, you sucked. Who
- 11:41Speaker 4: are you to try to help anybody? You're a loser.
- 11:43Speaker 4: I mean, those are some of the voices that I've
- 11:47Speaker 4: heard in my head over the time. But we got
- 11:50Speaker 4: to trust in God. Renew our minds say, well, this
- 11:52Speaker 4: is what God's called me to it. He's going to
- 11:54Speaker 4: get me through it. Cody your turn.
- 11:57Speaker 5: And you know, I think when I think of imposter syndrome,
- 12:01Speaker 5: and maybe this is a stretch, but I think with
- 12:03Speaker 5: Moses in Exodus for eleven or four ten, right, God's
- 12:08Speaker 5: called him, He's already experienced the burning bush.
- 12:10Speaker 3: He's already put.
- 12:11Speaker 5: His hand in the cloak and saw that it was
- 12:13Speaker 5: left wrist. He already saw the staff turn into a snake.
- 12:15Speaker 5: And God sends them, sends is trying to send him
- 12:17Speaker 5: to Egypt, and Moses says, like, Lord, I'm not eloquent,
- 12:22Speaker 5: like I don't have good speech, like you know a
- 12:24Speaker 5: lot of theologians in Turf. That is, Moses had a
- 12:26Speaker 5: speech impediment. So he's telling God like I can't go.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Who am I to stand before Farah? Like I can't
- 12:31Speaker 5: even talk well? And then God's responses, well, who made
- 12:35Speaker 5: the mouth right? And this thing kind of continues in Moses,
- 12:38Speaker 5: and I think it's in verse thirteen, says like, Lord,
- 12:42Speaker 5: please send somebody else.
- 12:45Speaker 3: I'm not qualified send somebody else.
- 12:48Speaker 6: And I think that that's something that we wrestled with sometimes.
- 12:51Speaker 3: I don't have the degrees, I don't have the experience, I.
- 12:54Speaker 5: Don't have the the qualifications, or like even just a
- 12:59Speaker 5: vanalizing no, Lord, I can't do that.
- 13:02Speaker 3: I don't, I don't. I don't know how to do that. Right.
- 13:04Speaker 6: So I think that's something that that we all deal.
- 13:07Speaker 5: With to some some degree of looking at ourselves.
- 13:11Speaker 3: So I'm not I'm not good enough, right.
- 13:13Speaker 5: Jeremiah said this, said something similar, Gideon said something similar,
- 13:18Speaker 5: Isaiah said something similar, right.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Like, I'm a man of unclean lips.
- 13:22Speaker 5: There's this, there's pattern throughout human history that even in
- 13:28Speaker 5: Biblical like the even in the Bible, we see these
- 13:32Speaker 5: these historical figures that have struggled with something similar of
- 13:38Speaker 5: believing and thinking they're not good enough to do whatever
- 13:43Speaker 5: God has called them to do.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, right.
- 13:50Speaker 7: And I was just thinking about, you know, earlier in
- 13:51Speaker 7: that scripture, you know, Jesus didn't care either side, you know,
- 13:55Speaker 7: And I was thinking kind of, you know, modern day
- 13:58Speaker 7: with us in our own shop here, you've been talking
- 14:03Speaker 7: a lot about degrees and ABC behind your name and
- 14:06Speaker 7: all that stuff.
- 14:07Speaker 8: We make it a point to make sure that that
- 14:09Speaker 8: doesn't matter here.
- 14:10Speaker 7: I mean, you know, everybody still us chores and you know, cleans,
- 14:14Speaker 7: bathrooms and all the things.
- 14:16Speaker 8: We don't care here what those letters are. The Lord
- 14:20Speaker 8: has given everybody a gifts.
- 14:21Speaker 7: Everybody gifts and that is that is what they bring
- 14:24Speaker 7: to the table, and we focus on that and make
- 14:27Speaker 7: sure that you know, folks know that and that's what
- 14:30Speaker 7: they're doing for the community.
- 14:31Speaker 4: And that's good a good point too, because even Jus
- 14:34Speaker 4: after three and a half years, the night before the cross,
- 14:36Speaker 4: he's washing feet.
- 14:38Speaker 3: That the lowest job in the house.
- 14:40Speaker 4: You know, people walking in with their sandals, walking on
- 14:43Speaker 4: paths that camel had done and donkey doun was mixed
- 14:47Speaker 4: in with the dirt, so they would have really dirty
- 14:49Speaker 4: feet walking into somebody's house and somebody who washed their
- 14:52Speaker 4: feet as a gift of hospitality.
- 14:54Speaker 3: And Peter is like, your Lord, you're you're not washing
- 14:57Speaker 3: my feet.
- 14:57Speaker 4: I mean that's like you know, and He's like, I'm
- 15:00Speaker 4: trying to show something suburban leadership.
- 15:04Speaker 3: You know, you watch my whole body. He's like, no, no, no,
- 15:07Speaker 3: you know, he's just all over the top. I'm thinking
- 15:11Speaker 3: a lot like.
- 15:13Speaker 4: But and we do that, we compare ourselves maybe to
- 15:16Speaker 4: this point, Cody that maybe we look at other guys
- 15:19Speaker 4: like the evangelists and I'm not as good as this guy,
- 15:22Speaker 4: but they've been practicing, you know, and we we just
- 15:24Speaker 4: need to practice and just do what God calls you
- 15:26Speaker 4: to do. And just that old saying, he doesn't call
- 15:29Speaker 4: the equipped, he equips the call, right. So it's a
- 15:33Speaker 4: learning curve. We're all on a learning curve. So get
- 15:36Speaker 4: in there and you know, practice. That's why we're practicing
- 15:40Speaker 4: our faith. Doctors are practicing medicine. You know. We sometimes
- 15:45Speaker 4: we'll give them a hard time because we'll go to
- 15:46Speaker 4: a few different doctors and you know, let's subscribe, prescribe this,
- 15:49Speaker 4: or prescribe that, and we're look, damn well, they're practicing medicine,
- 15:53Speaker 4: and you know, based on the information and whatever little
- 15:56Speaker 4: tests are going on, they're going to try to prescribe something.
- 15:59Speaker 4: The same lawyers they're practicing law, you know, So we're
- 16:03Speaker 4: getting better at it. You know, do you find those
- 16:07Speaker 4: initials intimidating when someone comes to counseling or do you
- 16:11Speaker 4: also want to try to level the playing field so
- 16:13Speaker 4: they feel more comfortable to open.
- 16:14Speaker 7: Up and share, you know, to me, I think people
- 16:20Speaker 7: feel better if you know, not really knowing about all
- 16:24Speaker 7: those those letters.
- 16:26Speaker 8: You know, and even when we go to people's homes
- 16:28Speaker 8: and home services or even the therapist, it's like just
- 16:31Speaker 8: just casual.
- 16:32Speaker 7: You know, we don't want to be all too fancy
- 16:34Speaker 7: and dressed up, and you know, we want to meet
- 16:36Speaker 7: them where they're at, and.
- 16:39Speaker 8: That's what we do.
- 16:41Speaker 3: So it's good.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I would agree that, you know, meeting people
- 16:47Speaker 5: where they're at.
- 16:48Speaker 6: Is super important.
- 16:49Speaker 5: One of the things we found, or I say, we
- 16:52Speaker 5: put it and like the behavior health field is one
- 16:55Speaker 5: of the things that's really blown up throughout the years
- 16:57Speaker 5: is the pure support level of care because essentially it
- 17:02Speaker 5: takes people who have lived, like shared the experience to
- 17:07Speaker 5: go work with those who are still in active addiction,
- 17:10Speaker 5: those who are facing homelessness, those who are on probation,
- 17:13Speaker 5: are incarcerated, right, they have a level of experience that's
- 17:18Speaker 5: valuable that where they can help people and say, hey,
- 17:20Speaker 5: I'm in recovery. This is how I did it, Like
- 17:23Speaker 5: I can. I can look at you and say, like,
- 17:25Speaker 5: I've walked in your shoes, and sometimes there's a stigma,
- 17:29Speaker 5: you know, unfortunately this is just human nature. Where the
- 17:34Speaker 5: opposite occurs, where we start comparing in a different way
- 17:38Speaker 5: of if I'm looking at a clinician who's never felt,
- 17:40Speaker 5: who's never battled with addiction, who's never battled with these
- 17:43Speaker 5: certain things.
- 17:45Speaker 6: There's all there's a thought in the back of your
- 17:46Speaker 6: head like, well, how can you really help me?
- 17:48Speaker 5: You have no idea when it's right, you're stepping into
- 17:51Speaker 5: my shoes based on what you've learned in a textbook
- 17:55Speaker 5: versus experience exactly like getting dirt on your feet and
- 17:58Speaker 5: walking through it. And not to say it and I
- 18:01Speaker 5: don't mean that say clinicians don't have value, right, but
- 18:06Speaker 5: that's one of the things that we've been seeing a
- 18:08Speaker 5: law is shifts towards the parent support.
- 18:12Speaker 6: And I think that that's.
- 18:16Speaker 5: You know, regardless of how you look at it, whether
- 18:18Speaker 5: it's a behavioral health field, whether it's in the church,
- 18:21Speaker 5: like you need people that can come and walk alongside
- 18:25Speaker 5: us and even if you don't have that experience. One
- 18:29Speaker 5: of the things I learned in in like chaplain training
- 18:32Speaker 5: is just the ministry of presence.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 18:35Speaker 5: We don't always have to know the answers, we don't
- 18:37Speaker 5: always have to have the right words, we don't always
- 18:40Speaker 5: have to fix anything.
- 18:42Speaker 6: But there's this idea called the ministry of presence.
- 18:44Speaker 5: Of just being with them, right, Like I think of
- 18:48Speaker 5: Jesus whenever he went to raise Lazareth.
- 18:50Speaker 6: You know, he's coming to raise Lazareth already knows what he's.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Going to do.
- 18:54Speaker 6: Martha and Mary a proteim, And it says that he.
- 18:56Speaker 5: Wept with them, right, He took the He took time
- 19:01Speaker 5: to weep with them before raising Lazars from the dead,
- 19:05Speaker 5: like he met them where they were at.
- 19:06Speaker 3: The woman at the well, he met her where she
- 19:08Speaker 3: was at.
- 19:09Speaker 5: You know, he was constantly going to meet the people
- 19:12Speaker 5: where they were at.
- 19:14Speaker 6: And I think that that's something that you can learn from.
- 19:17Speaker 7: Is that's where we try to meet people as well.
- 19:21Speaker 7: And you know, and there's another degree that we came
- 19:24Speaker 7: up with that bt DT being there done that degree,
- 19:27Speaker 7: you know.
- 19:28Speaker 4: So yeah, so that's why you know, mental health matters.
- 19:34Speaker 4: Renew your mind, renew your life, what you're thinking, how
- 19:37Speaker 4: you're thinking, bouncing it off people. Here's a verse that
- 19:40Speaker 4: And again you mentioned addiction. July was twenty five years
- 19:45Speaker 4: since I quit drinking smoking. We talked about addiction last time,
- 19:48Speaker 4: and it just dawned on me in the last.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Couple of weeks.
- 19:50Speaker 4: It's like it's been twenty five years since I've eaten
- 19:53Speaker 4: dog poop. It was like, congratulations, bro, you shouldn't have
- 19:57Speaker 4: started eating dog poop to forget with, but your breath
- 19:59Speaker 4: is it's been a lot nicer to deal with. But
- 20:03Speaker 4: you know, I shouldn't have started to begin with. But
- 20:06Speaker 4: we say we add up clean time because it's it
- 20:09Speaker 4: shows it's possible for the person who's just having a
- 20:11Speaker 4: hard time getting some traction and overcoming it, so it's doable.
- 20:14Speaker 3: It just says it's doable.
- 20:16Speaker 4: But in some aa NA groups say they just say,
- 20:21Speaker 4: I'm Bill, I'm an alcoholic. And you know, had some
- 20:24Speaker 4: folks in the last group and they've got like eight, nine,
- 20:26Speaker 4: ten years clean, They're still like, I'm so and so
- 20:30Speaker 4: and I'm an alcoholic, And I'm like, we're just really
- 20:32Speaker 4: careful that our identity is. I am a child of God.
- 20:35Speaker 4: I am a follower of Jesus. I am loved by
- 20:38Speaker 4: creator God. I struggle with because we all struggle with something.
- 20:41Speaker 4: It just puts things in perspective. My identity is not
- 20:44Speaker 4: wrapped up in what I do or don't do. It's
- 20:47Speaker 4: who I am and whose I am. And I say
- 20:49Speaker 4: all that to preface this verse. It's Proverbs and it
- 20:53Speaker 4: could be a sub sceme of our show. For as
- 20:56Speaker 4: he thinks in his heart, so he is. So is
- 21:00Speaker 4: he as a man thinks in his heart, so he is.
- 21:03Speaker 4: You keep calling you or labeling yourself something like not
- 21:06Speaker 4: qualified or you know, you know, it's really and this
- 21:10Speaker 4: isn't like claim it, you know kind of stuff, but
- 21:16Speaker 4: it is really important you see yourself the way God
- 21:19Speaker 4: sees you. You're full of potential. You're His workmanship aka masterpiece.
- 21:24Speaker 4: And Ephesians two ten, He's working on us, man, and
- 21:26Speaker 4: working in us and through us and with God, all
- 21:29Speaker 4: things are possible.
- 21:30Speaker 3: That's what my Bible says.
- 21:32Speaker 4: So and we even you know that's we're not even
- 21:34Speaker 4: haven't even talked about supernatural stuff yet, miracle stuff. God
- 21:38Speaker 4: still in a miracle business. And Moses you mentioned even
- 21:41Speaker 4: a few of those miracles that God showed Moses to
- 21:43Speaker 4: build up his confidence that I'm with you between a
- 21:46Speaker 4: hand the leprosy and a hand trick, the staff and
- 21:49Speaker 4: a snake trick, you know, I.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Mean, He's like, let me you know, I want you
- 21:53Speaker 3: to know that you know that you know that I'm
- 21:55Speaker 3: with you on this. I'm not asking you to do
- 21:56Speaker 3: something all on your own, so your turn.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Putty and kind of on the same lines, like I
- 22:04Speaker 5: do a Bible study and we've been going through we
- 22:06Speaker 5: just got their own first Tesslonians. We're in Psycho Desalonians.
- 22:09Speaker 5: And as I was reading through, you know, Psycho Tessalonians.
- 22:12Speaker 5: At the end of chapter two, you know, it talks
- 22:15Speaker 5: about you know, being being called by God and having
- 22:20Speaker 5: this sense of comfort and comforting our hearts. And as
- 22:23Speaker 5: I was reading over, one of the things that really
- 22:25Speaker 5: stuck out to me was this idea of repentance right
- 22:30Speaker 5: or to repent. And when you look at that word
- 22:33Speaker 5: and the Greek both words and mattinoya for rependance and
- 22:36Speaker 5: matt to oyo for repent, they literally mean to change
- 22:41Speaker 5: your mind afterwards, right to think differently after something. And
- 22:46Speaker 5: it's so important because our minds really govern almost everything
- 22:52Speaker 5: in our lives. Right.
- 22:54Speaker 3: We hear it in even an addiction, right people.
- 22:56Speaker 5: Actively an addiction, you often hear the terms like they
- 23:00Speaker 5: have to be ready and willing to make a change
- 23:02Speaker 5: before they change, even to like things in the church,
- 23:06Speaker 5: like people in the church, like they have to like recognize.
- 23:11Speaker 3: But then also.
- 23:15Speaker 5: So I think that that that just goes hand in
- 23:18Speaker 5: hand with what you were saying, Pastorshuck, is that there's
- 23:21Speaker 5: this level that with even with the imposter syndrome, like
- 23:24Speaker 5: we have to believe. Like belief is the foundation for
- 23:29Speaker 5: all right, Like when the Bible says to guard your
- 23:32Speaker 5: heart because it sets the course of your life.
- 23:34Speaker 6: Really, the seed of the heart, the seed of the person,
- 23:37Speaker 6: is the mind.
- 23:37Speaker 5: Because the mind controls everything that we do, like whether
- 23:40Speaker 5: we believe it, we don't believe it. We learned this
- 23:42Speaker 5: through cognitive behavioral therapy dialectic behavior therapy, that the mind
- 23:47Speaker 5: is the sea.
- 23:47Speaker 6: Of our actions and our emotions.
- 23:51Speaker 5: So by setting our mind to like, my value is
- 23:54Speaker 5: in being a child of God, Like that's important. And
- 23:57Speaker 5: when I was going through my chaplaincy course, one of
- 23:59Speaker 5: the things that are structured obvious say is that God
- 24:01Speaker 5: created human beings, not human doings. It's our value is
- 24:05Speaker 5: not based on what we can do, It's based on
- 24:08Speaker 5: who we are as children of God.
- 24:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Yeah, And then.
- 24:15Speaker 7: Anything I want to add to that, well, I was
- 24:17Speaker 7: just thinking that, you know, there's definitely all kinds of
- 24:19Speaker 7: addictions that are hard to overcome. Through this particular addiction,
- 24:25Speaker 7: I'm not saying that it's more simplistic, but it's you know,
- 24:28Speaker 7: it's about reframing the narrative, you know, being able to
- 24:34Speaker 7: talk about those doubts that you have about yourself, those fears,
- 24:37Speaker 7: the guilt, all those things, as Cody was mentioning, normalizing
- 24:41Speaker 7: those feelings, you know, and focusing on the data that
- 24:45Speaker 7: all this information that we have about So really, when
- 24:49Speaker 7: you think about getting better, it's not that big of
- 24:51Speaker 7: a leap. We have God's word, you know what you know,
- 24:55Speaker 7: how God wants and sees us. Uh, you put all
- 24:58Speaker 7: that together in a you know, in a bowl and hopefully,
- 25:02Speaker 7: you know, recoveries around the corner.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:07Speaker 4: And even you know, we talked about like positions and
- 25:11Speaker 4: like in churches or you know, careers, but even just
- 25:15Speaker 4: being a dad. You know, like you know, there's some
- 25:19Speaker 4: expectations of what a dad is and what a dad
- 25:21Speaker 4: should be and stepping up the day you know the
- 25:23Speaker 4: baby is born, you start acting like a dad, you
- 25:26Speaker 4: have an instant paradigm shift. Or for a mom, she's
- 25:28Speaker 4: a mother, some things just come natural. Granted, parenting is
- 25:32Speaker 4: a learning curve as well. I mean, you know, it
- 25:35Speaker 4: doesn't come with a book outside the Bible, basic instructions
- 25:38Speaker 4: before leaving Earth. But parenting is a great thing as well,
- 25:41Speaker 4: because some people will like based on the other dads
- 25:44Speaker 4: they've had, you know, as examples good are good or
- 25:48Speaker 4: bad in their life. What they think of good dad
- 25:51Speaker 4: is but you know, believing that I'm going to be
- 25:53Speaker 4: a good dad and shoot for that and maybe, you know,
- 25:55Speaker 4: if you need some help, mentoring and all that kind
- 25:57Speaker 4: of stuff. I just want to say that you guys,
- 26:00Speaker 4: Desert View, you have lots of services available and if
- 26:05Speaker 4: you scroll down, you got adult counseling, child and adolescens counseling,
- 26:08Speaker 4: juvenile community corrections. You do parenting classes, substitute intensive family support.
- 26:15Speaker 4: You know, there's a whole list of things that you
- 26:17Speaker 4: guys do. Suicide prevention is really big in our area,
- 26:21Speaker 4: and I know you guys are on the forefront doing
- 26:22Speaker 4: an annual five k walk slash run.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Just finish kind of that. Get in here and just
- 26:31Speaker 3: walk with us.
- 26:32Speaker 4: And the people you meet that you're walking with while
- 26:33Speaker 4: they're walking have been affected by suicide. And again I
- 26:37Speaker 4: think that that is the ultimate example of you know,
- 26:40Speaker 4: mental health matters. When someone's at the place where they
- 26:43Speaker 4: can't take another step, I'm not I wish I wasn't
- 26:45Speaker 4: alive anymore. That's just it's a really bad place to be.
- 26:49Speaker 8: So and for those survivors too that are you know,
- 26:53Speaker 8: there to to move on.
- 26:54Speaker 5: And go on.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Yeah, So if anyone is thinking like that, please reach out,
- 26:59Speaker 4: give us a call five or five, three, two, six,
- 27:01Speaker 4: seven eight, go to mind desert read dot org. Closing
- 27:07Speaker 4: thoughts before we pray or we dump in, jump in
- 27:10Speaker 4: the throwing them of grace.
- 27:14Speaker 8: Just always put on the armor of God, and.
- 27:18Speaker 5: You know.
- 27:21Speaker 8: That's that's what we need.
- 27:23Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, And then and I think another part of
- 27:26Speaker 5: that too is surrounding ourselves with people who are willing
- 27:29Speaker 5: to tell us the truth. The truth isn't always funny hear,
- 27:33Speaker 5: it's not always what we want to hear, but the
- 27:35Speaker 5: truth will set you free.
- 27:36Speaker 3: Yeah, right, So we need the armor of God and
- 27:39Speaker 3: we need others we are willing to walk with us
- 27:43Speaker 3: in their armor.
- 27:44Speaker 6: You know, it's important that we're connected, we're plugged in,
- 27:48Speaker 6: and whether.
- 27:49Speaker 5: That's one on one, whether that's in a group, right,
- 27:52Speaker 5: that speaks to even the mental health stuff, Like I
- 27:53Speaker 5: think it's it's super important that we have those those
- 27:57Speaker 5: people in our lives that we can rely on to.
- 28:03Speaker 6: To uplift us through the truth.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Good word, it's amazing how quick thirty minutes flies when
- 28:12Speaker 4: we start jumping into some stuff deep ditch. But we're
- 28:15Speaker 4: open to wet the appetite and just encourage and admonish
- 28:18Speaker 4: folks to get in community.
- 28:20Speaker 3: And you know, no shame in your game if you
- 28:23Speaker 3: need a little help. We all need help.
- 28:24Speaker 4: That's why that song me is a number one hit song.
- 28:29Speaker 4: But Cody past Cody want to lead us in prayer
- 28:31Speaker 4: and ever Rick.
- 28:32Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, definitely.
- 28:35Speaker 5: Father, I thank you for today the conversations that we
- 28:40Speaker 5: get to have, and the fellowship through distance, Lord, and
- 28:44Speaker 5: just an opportunity to talk about your word and spread
- 28:48Speaker 5: the good news and really just look at at life
- 28:54Speaker 5: not only.
- 28:54Speaker 6: Through a spiritual lens, but a practical lens as well.
- 28:58Speaker 5: And hopefully Lord, that as as your word says and
- 29:02Speaker 5: in Thessalonians and Corinthians, that as as it's heard from us,
- 29:07Speaker 5: that it'll go out not just in eloquent words of wisdom, Lord,
- 29:10Speaker 5: but in power, that your Holy Spirit would touch the
- 29:13Speaker 5: hearts and the minds, and that those who are struggling
- 29:16Speaker 5: with imposter syndrome, or that your spirit would just speak
- 29:20Speaker 5: to them and they would start to They would have
- 29:22Speaker 5: people placed within their lives, they would seek help, they
- 29:25Speaker 5: would do whatever it is they need to do, they
- 29:27Speaker 5: need to read your word, pray, but they would take
- 29:31Speaker 5: the steps towards that, that repentance, that changing of the mind,
- 29:35Speaker 5: and that those who are listening and struggling with maybe
- 29:39Speaker 5: their value, because the value is often attached to a
- 29:41Speaker 5: poster syndrome, that as children of God, we would find value,
- 29:46Speaker 5: the utmost value in who we are as as children
- 29:50Speaker 5: that were rafted in by the blood of Christ, and
- 29:52Speaker 5: that our value would be in being your child, rather
- 29:56Speaker 5: than what we can do to try to impress you
- 29:59Speaker 5: or try to to do for.
- 30:02Speaker 6: The Kingdom of God and rely on our own efforts.
- 30:05Speaker 5: And I pray that we would everybody listening would be
- 30:08Speaker 5: reminded to equip ourselves with the armor of God, and
- 30:14Speaker 5: those who need to hear this message, Lord, it'll it'll
- 30:16Speaker 5: reach them, It'll get to them. And then more importantly,
- 30:19Speaker 5: it would again by your Holy Spirit, it would be
- 30:22Speaker 5: within them.
- 30:23Speaker 3: And then that change would have rise and we.
- 30:26Speaker 5: Would start as see people walking in freeness and boldness
- 30:32Speaker 5: and not doubting the callings that you've put upon their lives,
- 30:35Speaker 5: but it was fully leading into it and acknowledging it,
- 30:40Speaker 5: and that as as a body, we would do a
- 30:43Speaker 5: better job of speaking truth to one another and moonishing,
- 30:46Speaker 5: encouraging and exhorting one another in a way that is.
- 30:52Speaker 6: Truly glorifying you.
- 30:54Speaker 5: So as we extend to the ends of the earth
- 30:56Speaker 5: to make disciples and spread the good news.
