- 0:25When life shapes us. When love anchors us, when lost
- 0:29changes us, we are not left behind.
- 0:33We are carried forward, held by faith, rooted in purpose,
- 0:39finding our way. This is carried forward, a space
- 0:46for stories of resilience, purpose and forward resolve.
- 1:03Hi, have you ever had a goal or just something that you've
- 1:08carried forward with you over years from be it all the times
- 1:12in your life from, you know, 30 years on to 16 years and it just
- 1:16stuck with you, but you never really had the time to focus on
- 1:19it. But then a time comes in your
- 1:22life when you have the capacity and even the friend to do it
- 1:26with. That is what I'm talking about
- 1:28today here on Carried Ford. I'm Sean and this in your host,
- 1:32this is my friend Betty Trivette, and she is here to
- 1:35talk about exactly that. We've been friends now.
- 1:39For over 16. Yeah, over 16 years and we're
- 1:43talking about running the Boston Marathon.
- 1:49And Betty and I were had the delightful adventure to run
- 1:56Austin Marathon back in 2010, back in 2010 together, we worked
- 2:01together at Brooks City Base and we became fast friends.
- 2:08And then we both realized that we enjoy running and we worked
- 2:12together and we trained together and we got to accomplish that
- 2:17goal of running a marathon for the first time.
- 2:20But we all always had in the back of our minds that we would
- 2:23love to run the Boston Marathon. So that's what I'm here with
- 2:27Betty today to talk about. We're going to talk about Betty
- 2:31and who she is and in a little bit more about how we met and
- 2:36our friendship over the years, and then let you in on some
- 2:41exciting news about our journey, which we're going to title Miles
- 2:46to Remember, which is going to get us to the Boston Marathon.
- 2:50We hope so. Thank you for being here.
- 2:54Thank you for inviting me. You want to tell us a little bit
- 2:57about who you are beyond our running adventures?
- 3:02A mom, a mom of two, my own and two bonus kids, A wife, a
- 3:08grandmother of seven. I worked HR for a government
- 3:12contractor for many years. That's where her and I met, Sean
- 3:15and I met and now I'm a realtor here in the greater San Antonio
- 3:19area. She's a really good, Really.
- 3:23Yeah. If you.
- 3:26Say so. Yeah, she is.
- 3:28She is. You can ask all her clients too.
- 3:31Yes. But I do want to say Shawna
- 3:35actually helped me because I did have a force accident when I was
- 3:4016 years old and hurt my back. And so I'd start running later.
- 3:45I was like 35 when I started running.
- 3:47And then throughout the time I had hurt my back again and I had
- 3:52signed up to do the half marathon in San Antonio and I
- 3:56hurt my back. And Shawna came to work at Brook
- 3:58City Base and we start talking about running.
- 4:02And I just said, you know what, I'm going to walk it.
- 4:04And she's like, why? I said because in my back.
- 4:07And she's like, no, I will train with you.
- 4:10And I said, OK, I'm going to give you 2 weeks.
- 4:13And if I'm not giving up with you, you're I'm giving you
- 4:17permission to let set me free. And we were very blessed that
- 4:22that did not happen. And we were.
- 4:24I was able to accomplish the one goal of at least running a
- 4:27marathon. The Boston has always been my
- 4:30destination. And she did.
- 4:32She's even to this day, she's a fantastic runner.
- 4:36So like she she could probably run laps around me now because
- 4:39she's kept up with it maybe. Not today.
- 4:43Yeah. But she, Yeah, she gets up at
- 4:465:00 AM and runs on her treadmill.
- 4:48And we all have our, you know, our times of recovery and things
- 4:53like that. But running has stayed
- 4:54consistent and talk a little bit about that, like how running has
- 4:59been a consistent part of your life, so I think.
- 5:02The one thing about running is as opposed to, well, I guess
- 5:05other things, but it can be a individual sport, right?
- 5:12And so you need a good pair of shoes.
- 5:15That's all I'm going to tell you, a good pair of shoes.
- 5:18You can wear anything else you want, but a good pair of shoes
- 5:22and it can just, it just transcends you from the I always
- 5:28say it cleans the cobwebs out of your head, right?
- 5:31Because you can do it by yourself.
- 5:32You can do it with a partner. We can't tell you how many
- 5:36countless conversations and therapy subjects we had training
- 5:41and running and still doing that, you know, So just to be
- 5:46able to you can control it. It doesn't matter how fast you
- 5:50go, you're in control. And that's the one thing that
- 5:53something it can't take they no one can take that from you,
- 5:56right, right. And if you can't run, you can
- 5:58walk, you know, for the most part, you know, So it just it,
- 6:01for me, it's always been that I was a single.
- 6:04Mom for a while. So I could come home from work
- 6:07and just go run and then take them and do all the things that
- 6:10they needed to do and start all over.
- 6:13Yeah, because it gives you energy.
- 6:14I mean, there are runs that like, take away your energy.
- 6:17But like, I'm with you. Like even to this day, it's the
- 6:21one thing that all you need is a pair of shoes, you know, and
- 6:25lace up and, and hit the door. And I've traveled all over the
- 6:29world and been able to run a lot of places.
- 6:32And I will say you've learned the area so much better by
- 6:35walking or running it right, rather than taking a car just to
- 6:39get there or even a bike. I mean, nothing against that,
- 6:41but like there's nothing like running an area to get to know
- 6:45it. And, and like, it is like, like
- 6:48before Betty, I didn't really run with people.
- 6:52Like I ran on my own, exception of Andy, my husband, I would run
- 6:56with him occasionally, but he wasn't much of a runner.
- 7:00I really found the appreciation for it more than he did.
- 7:03And so before Betty, I didn't really run with groups.
- 7:07I didn't really run with anyone else, so I was a little
- 7:11hesitant, even though I didn't challenge her to do it because I
- 7:14was challenging myself to run with someone, right?
- 7:17And it just Betty and I just worked perfectly because there
- 7:21are days that, you know, maybe we're talking of, maybe we
- 7:24weren't. Maybe one of us was really
- 7:26running really good or good race, right, or are are one of
- 7:31us was kind of having an off day, but we allowed each other
- 7:35to have those days and we were supported them and we didn't
- 7:39hinder the other person. And like if the other person was
- 7:41having a better day, then I would say Betty go or she would
- 7:45say Shawna go. We'd always circle back and, you
- 7:49know, that we checked on each other, but like, we encouraged
- 7:53each other. And a majority of the days we
- 7:55were on the same, you know, we could just run and talk and just
- 8:01go through things. And it was just such a precious
- 8:05time. I think that we to this day
- 8:08remember. Yeah.
- 8:10Yeah, Cherish, actually. So in it and then in that we
- 8:15were both accomplishing something that was really hard
- 8:19and that we both weren't real certain 100% that we could do it
- 8:23right. So that always pushes you to the
- 8:25edge when you're like, I think I can do this, but I'm not 100%.
- 8:30And then like doing that with someone else just adds to that
- 8:34feeling of like, wow, look what we did right?
- 8:38Look what you did. Look what you know, the.
- 8:40Accountability to each other too.
- 8:42I think that that really helped accountability.
- 8:44Yeah, because like it, we used to run in the evenings, like
- 8:47after work and then we would go on weekends to do our long runs.
- 8:54And so for San Antonio. Was what it was.
- 8:56Petrenko was farmland and it was gosh, that was I do cherish
- 9:01those moments because I remember one Sunday just kind of overcast
- 9:05and we had our music. We did that day.
- 9:09We had our own music on and just in the zone and you're like,
- 9:13wow. And I think that was like an 18
- 9:14mile day and it just was. So I, I go back to that day so
- 9:21many times when I run because I'm like.
- 9:23So that was like the perfect. Right.
- 9:26Yeah, yeah. And especially like and when
- 9:29you're in the zone, know yourself, but then when you're
- 9:31in the zone with someone else, that just adds that much more
- 9:35like positive energy to what you're doing.
- 9:37Connect you? Yeah.
- 9:38So much more to it, yeah. So we do plan to.
- 9:43So it's a plan right now and we're calling it a miles to
- 9:46remember because we want to run the Boston Marathon and we're
- 9:51going to apply to the Alzheimer's Association charity
- 9:58in order to get our ticket into Boston.
- 10:01Betty could probably qualify for Boston.
- 10:03I'm not sure that I could, but that's OK because I've talked to
- 10:07some people that live in Boston that are that have done the
- 10:10Boston Marathon and they gave me pause to go Shawna, like a lot
- 10:15of people use charities to do that, right?
- 10:18And because I originally was going, man, like, are we, you
- 10:23know, are we cheating? You know, and we're not, we're
- 10:27not. Because part of applying to the
- 10:33the Alzheimers Association to get a place on their team to run
- 10:38Boston Marathon is that we each have to raise $10,000 for that
- 10:42organization. And that is why we are talking
- 10:45about this now is because we're not raising the money right now
- 10:48because we haven't even been accepted into their team.
- 10:52But we eventually will be asking our friends and family and just
- 10:57whoever wants to support our, you know, miles to remember to
- 11:02support us and to support ultimately the Alzheimer's
- 11:06Association, right? It's not, it's not supporting
- 11:09us, it's just getting us a ticket to be able to run 26.2
- 11:12miles, right? So, but you will be supporting
- 11:18the Alzheimer's Association, which has done so many good.
- 11:22Things. For people with dementia and as
- 11:24you guys probably remember, my husband Andy had a form of
- 11:29dementia, not Alzheimer's, but Alzheimer's Association supports
- 11:34all types of dementia. And then Betty has had also
- 11:39dementia show up in her life, and I'll let you talk about
- 11:41that. So recently my mother-in-law
- 11:44have has come to live with us. She lived in North Carolina and
- 11:47she fell and fractured her femur by her hip and when the doctor
- 11:52saw her they said that she could no longer live on her own and
- 11:56our home was probably the most equipped to take her.
- 12:01So we went from empty nesters to having a 686 year old, 5 year
- 12:08old really in our home. And she cannot be left alone
- 12:13because of her mobility. But she has been diagnosed with
- 12:17severe dementia. And so we take care of her.
- 12:23We try to keep her, you know, on track.
- 12:26Sometimes it's the same story every morning.
- 12:30And we, I just smile and act like we hadn't had that
- 12:33conversation before. And you know, she's, she's doing
- 12:38well. We've had some a couple of bad
- 12:40moments, but not a lot. But it was a lot for us.
- 12:44We weren't trained, we didn't know what we were getting into.
- 12:48We didn't quite understand the mental state.
- 12:53But since living with us, she truly is and so much better
- 12:58health and she was living by herself and clearly not being
- 13:02able to get around and get herself showered and take her
- 13:06pills on time and or take him at all.
- 13:09We don't know what she was doing.
- 13:10So it's very challenging because again, we've now gone from like
- 13:14waking up on a Sunday morning going, Hey, let's go to Home
- 13:17Depot to we can't go because, you know, so now we have to take
- 13:21panic care if we want to go somewhere together.
- 13:23And I, I'm a realtor, so I'm out a lot.
- 13:26My husband works from home. So it's really challenging on
- 13:29him too. But it's, it has definitely
- 13:32been, it makes you think. And and then honestly, when I
- 13:37met Shawna, we didn't know it and Andy was in the first stages
- 13:42of what he was going through. And so even watching what she
- 13:46went through and what I, I didn't leave her at the time he
- 13:49passed, but I did see a lot of and we talked a lot so.
- 13:55You know, it's really difficult. She saw a changes in Andy what
- 13:59that and she knew there were changes because I spoke with
- 14:01them as being different changes and I would speak of an Andy
- 14:06that wasn't really showing up as that to her and she would be
- 14:11like huh? And it was way before I knew
- 14:14that he had FTD, frontal temporal degeneration or
- 14:19dementia, but he just was showing up in the world a little
- 14:24bit differently. And then, you know, on our runs,
- 14:27I would express that and I didn't know what was going on
- 14:31with him. And, and, you know, but it was
- 14:34just kind of girl talk of like this is really stressful.
- 14:38And, you know, our friend talk, I guess.
- 14:42So she and then eventually Betty had moved away, but I eventually
- 14:49had to tell her, like, Andy has this rare disease and this is
- 14:53like probably some of the things that he was dealing with and we
- 14:56didn't even know it. So yeah, that's a lot.
- 15:01It's a lot. It's a lot.
- 15:02So but Betty, I am able to give Betty some insight into
- 15:07different things with her mother-in-law.
- 15:09Now. It's not the same kind of
- 15:11dementia. So it shows up differently.
- 15:13And so she has some different challenges than I do, but I can
- 15:17like it, share my experiences that are similar or, you know,
- 15:26sometimes helpful. No, I guess because, you know,
- 15:29The thing is, none of us know. None of us know.
- 15:33And so you've just got to be kind and and helpful.
- 15:39And sometimes I walk out of the room and roll my eyes and go,
- 15:43what just happened in there? But I don't know where I'm going
- 15:46to be. So I always try to be mindful.
- 15:48Of that. That.
- 15:50She's. Still, we still need to respect
- 15:53her. We still need to, you know,
- 15:55sometimes you do have to treat her like a child.
- 15:57Well, that's when she's A5 girl and it's sometimes that's, that
- 15:59is how it, it, it shows itself, right?
- 16:03But I still always want to be respectful of her and her life.
- 16:07And I know where she is now. Because what I do know is if she
- 16:11could be living on her own, she absolutely would be.
- 16:14And it's not because she doesn't want to be with us.
- 16:16It's because that's what her plan was.
- 16:18She wants to be taking care of herself.
- 16:20And she just can't like, like we all, they're independent women
- 16:24want to, yeah, we don't want to be a burden on anyone.
- 16:29And then I would say like with with that, I lost my train of
- 16:36thought there, but just in regards to like every day is
- 16:42different, right? And it's, and it's the same and
- 16:46just like, and it's hard no matter what type of dementia it
- 16:50is. And that's where I was going.
- 16:53Like dementia is such a hard disease because it's the brain
- 16:57and like they look the same on the outside, but then they show
- 16:59up different in the world and you are having to adjust.
- 17:03But your, your brain is like seeing and connecting all the
- 17:08things that you're used to because they look the same, but
- 17:11then they act differently and you're having to learn in the
- 17:14moment how to deal with that. And like, tell your brain like
- 17:19no, this isn't the same person. You're pivoting.
- 17:21Right. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:22This isn't the same person. You, they may have acted this
- 17:25way or you might have had some conflict with them or whatever
- 17:29before, but and then you may even have conflict with them
- 17:33now, but they're showing differently.
- 17:35And a lot of times they don't have control because like, you
- 17:39know, just comparing it to someone that has had maybe
- 17:44something on their physical hurt, like maybe like an amputee
- 17:49or something like that. Like you can immediately go,
- 17:51well, this person's not going to act the same because they're not
- 17:55the same, right? But when it's someone's brain, I
- 17:59always say betraying them, like you, you look at them and you
- 18:05think, Oh, they're the same, but then you know that they're not.
- 18:08And so sometimes it's hard as you that you're not, you don't
- 18:12have dementia, you're not losing your capabilities, but you
- 18:14almost feel like you do because you're constant battle.
- 18:17You're in a constant battle of your own self-conscious of like
- 18:20this person used to be like this and now I have to take care of
- 18:23them. And now, you know, and why are
- 18:25they're behaving this way, even if it they were really nice and
- 18:27then, you know, now they're behaving differently like and
- 18:30you're, you're like in the moment having to pivot and that
- 18:34can be hard. So just to speak to Betty's
- 18:38challenges like I, I've been there in a different form and
- 18:41manner and Andy's behaviors were a lot less controllable.
- 18:46Yes, yes. I mean, I didn't say it.
- 18:48There was a, you know, I mean, nobody wants to go through any
- 18:53of it, but you really did have a very difficult.
- 18:57Time but just not even to point that out but just like everyone
- 19:01out there dealing with like FTD or Alzheimer's like it's going
- 19:04to show up differently. You can help others, but it it's
- 19:06going to be your own journey, right, Right to transition from
- 19:11that because we both have these stories, but more looking at our
- 19:15race ahead, right? When you picture the two of us
- 19:20on this journey, what makes you smile?
- 19:23And then what makes you think, what did we get ourselves into?
- 19:26Well, I always think about that when I choose to sign up for a
- 19:29long race. What was I thinking?
- 19:31And then I go, you got this. What makes me smile is I know
- 19:35that we're going to do it because I know us, right?
- 19:39I couldn't. I've had other running partners
- 19:41in the past, but I'm going to tell you we just it's an we just
- 19:47flow. And so I know we're going to,
- 19:50we're gonna help each other, we're gonna inspire each other,
- 19:53we're going to push each other. And then we're also gonna say
- 19:56it's OK if today's not the day, right, Right.
- 19:58You know, So cuz some days it's, it's not the day you really want
- 20:03it to be, but it's just not going to be.
- 20:05So I just know that that's, I mean when she said.
- 20:10I'm going to help you do this. I did not know what I was
- 20:13getting myself into. And she didn't know she was
- 20:14going to. We didn't know we're going to
- 20:15have lifelong friends, right. That's true.
- 20:17Yeah. Lifelong friends and running
- 20:18brothers together. And it kept us.
- 20:20I mean, I just know we're going to do this.
- 20:23I. It is. 26 miles is a long way,
- 20:26people. Yeah, it is.
- 20:27I'm just going to tell you. I mean, it's a long way.
- 20:31It is. And you think, oh, I love
- 20:33people. Go.
- 20:34Oh, it's only 26 miles. Really.
- 20:36Well, it's the last time you did so and we know it is because
- 20:41we've done it before. So there's no, but it's Austin,
- 20:46it's meaningful, right? It's and I've told you I was
- 20:48before, you know, I didn't start running until I was in my 30s.
- 20:53And even before I start running, I knew I was going to do Boston.
- 20:58I mean, since I, you know, started running marathon or
- 21:02about half and then the full, then I was like, well, yeah, you
- 21:05got to like, it's the Mecca, right?
- 21:07It's you got to go for the Boston.
- 21:11But no to y'all, if you wanted to qualify with Boston, do not
- 21:15do Austin to. Qualify right.
- 21:16Don't do Austin. Flat surface.
- 21:19Do a little more research in this.
- 21:20Because I did not. Do.
- 21:22That so. That is true.
- 21:24That is. True.
- 21:25Reach out to him, we'll let you know.
- 21:27I think for me, what makes me smile is like, yeah, just
- 21:32because we have the history that we do and we've had this goal
- 21:35for so long, but I think we're a lot wiser.
- 21:41Like we both, we get along so well because they're, we don't
- 21:44have a lot of fail in us. Like we're going to get
- 21:47something done right. But we've grown in the wisdom of
- 21:51like how we get it done. And like we, we still don't want
- 21:55to fail, but we know that you can fail and we have failed,
- 21:59right? And but we also know like don't
- 22:03injure yourself or hurt yourself now because then like maybe the
- 22:09maybe you fail right now, but if you injure yourself then, then
- 22:14you're never going to accomplish that, right?
- 22:16And like you're forever failed. So that no pain, no gain is not,
- 22:21that's not right. And it's just, it's not because
- 22:24pain means could mean something's hurt that that
- 22:28really could debilitate you from doing anything.
- 22:32So she knows I was the world's worst about that.
- 22:36I'm going to push myself. I'm going to push myself and I'm
- 22:39going to push myself. Luckily, I never really got
- 22:42injured from running. My injury was from something
- 22:44else, never from running. But now to your point, I listen
- 22:48to my body so much more. And because she will tell you if
- 22:53I walked one step in a race, then I would have to redo it
- 22:56because that means I walked one step and now I'm like, you know
- 23:01what, I'm out here. A body motion stays in motion.
- 23:05So that's. I've, I've had to help her a
- 23:08little bit with that one a little bit because I have now
- 23:14become friends with people that are in their 70s and they are
- 23:18still running. Actually they're doing
- 23:20triathlons and I want to be that 70 year old that is doing that.
- 23:24So I've listened to their lessons and their and now I do
- 23:28like a run walk. I may run a little longer, I may
- 23:32walk a little shorter, I may walk a little longer, but it
- 23:35allows my body because all the running and not being smart has
- 23:40wreaked havoc on my hips. So I was getting to a point that
- 23:44I thought that I would not be able to continue the running
- 23:47journey on because I was just doing such a disservice to my
- 23:51structure. And I wanted to be able to walk
- 23:54when I'm, you know, 70 and it was looking like Johnny, you
- 23:59keep running, then that's not going to happen, right?
- 24:01So I've come across the Jeff Galloway through through my
- 24:07friends and they have showed me that and it's just been such a
- 24:12blessing and amazing because it's humbling.
- 24:16One, it is humbling, especially for runners that run all the
- 24:19time, right? It's humbling because you you do
- 24:23slow down, you do walk rather than just continuously running.
- 24:30And Betty was coming back from some recovery and you know, she
- 24:36wanted to run a race. We run a ran a race together to
- 24:39raise some money for Beauty from Ashes that have been on here
- 24:42before. And I introduced her to the Jeff
- 24:47Galloway like Run Walk. Well, I need her.
- 24:49Listen, Jeff Galloway like 40 years ago and I was like, I'm
- 24:53not doing that. What what that's not running.
- 24:58And now I'm like, I was pretty smart.
- 25:00Right. Because like, he just passed
- 25:02away this year and like, he he was like in his 90s, I think.
- 25:07Yeah. If I got that wrong, I'm so
- 25:08sorry. 80s or 90s, he was older. Yeah.
- 25:12And he was still running up until the end.
- 25:14So yeah. If I can still be running, Yeah.
- 25:18Yeah. So let's go into why we're going
- 25:22to make it a time to remember. Obviously the the one is like me
- 25:28and Betty have memories with running right, but our personal
- 25:33connections with Alzheimer's and dementia just in general, which
- 25:40the Alzheimer's Association helps.
- 25:42There's also another good organization, but I don't want
- 25:45to like not mention which is the association for frontal temporal
- 25:50degeneration. They they do collaborate with
- 25:54the Alzheimer's Association, but they do not have an official
- 25:58team. So.
- 25:59That's why we're not. Or I probably would, but
- 26:03Alzheimer's is a kind of a blanket for all dementias and
- 26:06they're getting more and more involved in other types of
- 26:10dementias. We already talked about our
- 26:14personal stories and what we we want to pass on to you guys.
- 26:22I'm just looking here make sure do you do you like the miles to
- 26:30remember name? Again, I do, I do and I because
- 26:33it has more than one meaning. You know it does because I, you
- 26:37know, our memories, the running brought us together and
- 26:43literally, if I mean we're disconnected, we'll always be
- 26:49connected regardless. I Can I tell our funny story?
- 26:54Oh yes, I have to tell you, I'll never live.
- 26:56This devil will. Not be a second.
- 26:59I think she will live down. So when we ran Austin, I'm a
- 27:04little bit old and Shawna, she was 32 when I was 48.
- 27:09And when we got done, she said, gosh, when I'm 48, I can still
- 27:15run a marathon. And I was like, that's not very
- 27:19old. What are you talking about?
- 27:21I was. You know, yeah, She turned. 48 I
- 27:24was like, are we doing another mirror?
- 27:28I mean, now clearly I'm a lot older than that, but so we kind
- 27:32of chuckled about it and then we're like, yes.
- 27:34And we had started to do it and then life got in the way again.
- 27:39And then this, we had discussion about Boston again and we just
- 27:44said, you know what, now's the time it is.
- 27:46And we're giving ourselves plenty of time to prepare to be
- 27:50ready. I've showed up on race dates and
- 27:53we we train in South Texas, so it's nice most of the time.
- 27:58But I have showed up on race days and other places where it
- 28:01is raining and cold and Phoenix believe it or not it the day
- 28:06before. Was beautiful the day of.
- 28:09Drop temperature pouring down rain and you're like, why?
- 28:14Are we guys? But but we'll prepare for all
- 28:17those things. It'll be April in Boston.
- 28:20Which will still be a little. Chilly.
- 28:21A little chilly, but yeah, we've ran races that we're not weather
- 28:27friendly even though we usually train and pretty pretty decent
- 28:32weather exception of the heat like.
- 28:33Yeah, we trained in. Hydro.
- 28:36Weather we did, you know, when it was 111, we said damn, it was
- 28:40a day, but 109 we did on asphalt.
- 28:44Yeah. And you know, you get really
- 28:46good at staying hydrated. Yeah, knowing like how to stay
- 28:52hydrated, long runs. So what do you hope like over
- 29:01our time? Because we are, we're going to
- 29:02start training soon and then we are going to be training all the
- 29:07way up until 2028. So that gives us a lot of time,
- 29:12which is good. We need that in our lives right
- 29:15now. But what do you hope over that
- 29:19time? I don't know, Do you have any
- 29:22hopes for that time? So here's what I've learned.
- 29:25We start out with this right and then and it gets so much deeper.
- 29:33The meaning always gets so much deeper than what how we start,
- 29:38right? Yeah, because we're like, oh,
- 29:39this is fun. Yeah.
- 29:40And we're runners and how cool is that and whatever, right?
- 29:44And yes, we're doing this for this organization that we've
- 29:46we've both been afflicted with, right?
- 29:48And that's great. But I do think that the the more
- 29:51you do it, the more we learn, the more the deeper meaning of
- 29:55it. So I don't tell the story very
- 30:00often. But after 911, they ran the flag
- 30:04across America and I got to be 1 of 19 people from San Antonio
- 30:10that carried the flag from Shamrock, TX to Amarillo, TX.
- 30:15And there was 19 of us. We would stop and we would get
- 30:19out the meaning behind that. I just want to run it because I
- 30:23thought, oh, I get to run the flag.
- 30:25It's so cool. And it was such a raw time,
- 30:28right? I think raw is the perfect word.
- 30:31And and then after doing it, having those connections and
- 30:36hearing stories, and it was a army captain that was heading it
- 30:40up and he allowed the other people besides the military to
- 30:44be part of that. So even being intermixed with
- 30:46military and we both have lots of military ties.
- 30:52I went there thinking this is going to be cool.
- 30:56I left there with such a memory that I didn't want to share it
- 31:00with everybody. It was so personal and it took
- 31:05me years to even tell people about it that didn't know.
- 31:11So I'm going off of that experience, knowing what that
- 31:14was for me, just how cool, right?
- 31:17I got to be one of the 19 that's that sounds cool, but then the
- 31:21the how deep it got. So I really look forward to
- 31:26seeing where this takes us emotionally together as friends.
- 31:32The deeper connection, the just the deeper knowledge you know.
- 31:37And like, I think sharing it on a more public level, like we
- 31:42hope we can bring you along for this.
- 31:46Like, and I think that's beautiful.
- 31:48Like, and we won't be like recording all our time, like
- 31:52we're going to have some time on our own.
- 31:54But like we hope that we can just like give you an inside
- 31:57look to to like our journey and how beautiful it can be to like
- 32:03sharing something with someone like this and then like do it
- 32:08for a good cause and accomplish when you're like ultimate goals,
- 32:14right yes, and and we won't like we'll share some of our failures
- 32:19like the. Bloopers are probably yes.
- 32:21It's just bloopers and running. What if you yes, yeah, yeah.
- 32:28So we we hope that we, that is our hope is that we can like
- 32:32bring you along for the UPS and the downs, but ultimately
- 32:37getting to the goal of of running Boston and like sharing
- 32:42that with you. Because as we sit here right
- 32:44now, we don't even know if we'll be picked up by an all timers
- 32:47association, but we are going to ultimately try.
- 32:51And if it, if it's nothing else, like we, we may show up to
- 32:54Boston and maybe just run our own race there.
- 32:57But you know, yeah, no, not. Like yeah, yeah of.
- 33:01Course, but like. You know.
- 33:03Maybe. There's a 5K dryer?
- 33:05I don't know. But, you know, we'll get to
- 33:09Boston and run. That's something like, but yeah,
- 33:13we're just saying, hey, this is something we want to do, that
- 33:16we've always wanted to do. And we know that we need to like
- 33:21prepare for it because $10,000 each is not easy.
- 33:26Like it's not easy to raise money, especially during these
- 33:30times. Everyone is is like watching
- 33:33their money because it's hard times.
- 33:35But but we also know that this is for a good cause.
- 33:40The Alzheimer's Association is huge and more and more of the
- 33:44older population is is getting Alzheimer's and I think they do
- 33:48need some like funding and support.
- 33:52So more and more resources are available because more.
- 33:56Research. Yeah.
- 33:57And research, yeah, that is true.
- 33:59And so I know the Alzheimer's Association in San Antonio, like
- 34:06I said, they partnered with FTD to allow us to have support
- 34:11group meetings in their building.
- 34:13They've worked with us in regards to research at the UT
- 34:20science Health Science in San Antonio.
- 34:23They have now have a whole, not Alzheimer's Association, but UT
- 34:28Health Science has a whole unit just for dementia.
- 34:33And, but I'm sure Alzheimer's Association is associated with
- 34:37that and helping that. I know FTD is, I'm sure they are
- 34:41too. But it, I mean, because our, our
- 34:46population is living longer, but some of our brains aren't always
- 34:50lasting with that life. So it's, these are important
- 34:53things and both of us having first hand experiences and, and
- 34:59touches in our life with that, like we know how important that
- 35:02is. So I am proud to help them.
- 35:06Me too. And, and the other thing I want
- 35:08to say, and this is maybe totally off record, sorry
- 35:10Shawna, but I know people I don't.
- 35:14My mother in law's with me for a reason.
- 35:16I don't know why yet, but she's there for a reason.
- 35:20There's something that I need to learn.
- 35:21There's something that I need to know.
- 35:23There's something that you know bigger than me and all anyone
- 35:30that you're help supporting and in any, you know, way, shape or
- 35:35form that with something stabilitating.
- 35:39Just be mindful that and it's hard, but be mindful that
- 35:45they're here for a reason and we need to take that in and we need
- 35:50to think about that because there is a.
- 35:53Lesson in here for. Us.
- 35:55I believe that with everything inside of me, because I know
- 35:58other people will say it's just not fair why they still here.
- 36:01You know, I've heard that many times, but they're not.
- 36:04They're probably not here for themselves.
- 36:06They're here for us. No, I agree with that because I
- 36:09was sharing with Betty actually before this is like how I've
- 36:13been really deep diving and and like trying to have a better
- 36:18relationship with Jesus, with the Lord, you know, and like
- 36:23that has become my focus and everything beyond that has just
- 36:28fallen into place. Like the things that need to
- 36:32happen are happening and I'm not even having to work at that.
- 36:36And and, and I say that is because I've found in my
- 36:40relationship with the Lord is that the struggles that I've
- 36:44faced, the struggles that I still face, they all come with a
- 36:48lesson. So I've tried to change my
- 36:51perspective, which is extremely hard of rather than going why?
- 36:55And like me, and I hate this, why am I having to deal with
- 36:58this? But going why like what can I
- 37:02learn from us rather than why, why me?
- 37:06It's more like why, why have I been given this?
- 37:09I mean and that and they that biblical you know, Paul speaks
- 37:13of that all the. None.
- 38:01OK, maybe it's still got it is. OK.
- 38:03So we're back. We have a little technical.
- 38:06Difficulty. We have a little technical
- 38:09difficulty, and we don't know why we don't have fun.
- 38:14Yeah, exactly. But maybe we need to pause.
- 38:19But thank you for being here today.
- 38:22We were wrapping up in land, you know.
- 38:26Yeah, no, thank you for. She's always organized.
- 38:30She's the one who does the roots.
- 38:32I show up with my shoes. She's always there.
- 38:37You know, she's I'm the one who's like, let's just go run
- 38:39and she's like, no, let's run this.
- 38:41And I'm like, oh, maybe that's a better plan you.
- 38:44Know it's just because I have to have a tracking system and a
- 38:47plan. No.
- 38:48And she always said I did and I'm getting a little bit better
- 38:50now, but but I'm so excited to go on this journey with you
- 38:54because it's it is about yes, we want to go to Boston.
- 38:56We do. We want to run Boston.
- 38:58It's not that we want to go to Boston, we want to run Boston.
- 39:01I just know this journey is going to be so filled with so
- 39:06many things that will help us in our life.
- 39:09Going forward, yeah, No, I. Agree and and on another note
- 39:14about running take away that if you can start I'm just going to
- 39:21tell you it is therapy you will clean out the cobwebs you will
- 39:25feel so much better. Maybe it's not even going to get
- 39:28down and walking, just moving and just do knowing that you.
- 39:32Did it? You you're doing this.
- 39:34No one else is in charge of that.
- 39:37You're in charge of that. And it's that is empowering.
- 39:41Yeah, it's very. Empowering it is 100% and yeah,
- 39:46I mean, it's just you guys will see as we do this, but it's just
- 39:50a beautiful relationship. And if you do have someone that
- 39:54can run with you like yeah, a partner, it does it, I mean, and
- 39:59bring it builds healthy relationships.
- 40:04It holds you accountable. The accountability part is huge
- 40:08because, listen, there were days.
- 40:10Where like. Like I'd be that way and she's
- 40:12like, come on. Or she'd be that one, Like come
- 40:15on. And it you're just at the end,
- 40:16you're like, yes, I'm so glad I did.
- 40:18It and you have someone counting on.
- 40:20You right, that's your biggest. I always show up probably better
- 40:24when it's not just me counting on me.
- 40:28But thank you again for and thanks everyone for listening.
- 40:31I hope that you will continue to tune in.
- 40:36We are going to have a separate miles to remember like page and
- 40:44like Instagram kind of stuff. It won't be, it'll still be on
- 40:47my carried forward page, but I'll just be a separate little
- 40:51piece of that. We're going to try to do some.
- 40:54I'm going to test out running with a phone.
- 40:57So we'll see how that goes. And yeah, just stay tuned and
- 41:03thanks for listening And just remember, we all carry something
- 41:08forward with us. Just make it something that is
- 41:11worth carrying and and make it love, make it friendship, make
- 41:17it running even. And TuneIn next week, actually
- 41:22the following Tuesday, because I'm now every other Tuesday so I
- 41:25can meet with great people like this because everybody's busy.
