- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell us now, lady, Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia mea podcast.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. It's one thirty pm
- 0:29Speaker 1: Mountain time. That's two thirty for our friends in Santa Claus, Indiana,
- 0:33Speaker 1: on Wednesday, December seventeenth, and we're live from Meet Eater
- 0:36Speaker 1: HQ and Bozeman. We are currently at home with friends
- 0:39Speaker 1: and family because it is Christmas Day. I'm your host, Spencer,
- 0:43Speaker 1: joined today by Corey and Max. On today's show, we'll
- 0:46Speaker 1: interview David Fabian about having his elk skull stolen by
- 0:50Speaker 1: a rancher while hunting public land in Wyoming. Then we'll
- 0:53Speaker 1: have some top three lists, followed by an interview with
- 0:56Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan about the best books for whitetail hunters and five. Finally,
- 1:00Speaker 1: we'll answer some listener submitted questions. But first, Cory, my
- 1:05Speaker 1: head hurts just looking at you because you have a
- 1:08Speaker 1: black eye and a big bandage on your face. That's
- 1:11Speaker 1: not normal. You had to cancel coming into Trivia earlier
- 1:17Speaker 1: this week because you said it you got a concussion,
- 1:19Speaker 1: and I said, oh no, did it happen while you
- 1:21Speaker 1: were skiing? And you said no, no, Yeah, it's much
- 1:25Speaker 1: worse than that long story. Tell folks would happen better
- 1:28Speaker 1: or worse.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Uh, pretty embarrassing, but happy to share it with the world.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Got my dog's frisbee stuck into a tree.
- 1:36Speaker 1: How high up?
- 1:37Speaker 2: In a not high maybe ten feet you know, I
- 1:40Speaker 2: could almost reach it with a stick. That was plan A.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Plan B, naturally, was to throw a rock into the
- 1:45Speaker 2: tree right, try and knock it down. Picked up a
- 1:49Speaker 2: I don't know, nine to ten pound rock off the ground.
- 1:52Speaker 1: How big show me with your hand, like like softball size. Yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 1: bigger than a softball.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Okay, how much to await pounds? You know, just easy
- 2:02Speaker 2: enough to get some good velocity throwing it into the
- 2:04Speaker 2: tree to knock the frisbee down. I hit the frisbee,
- 2:07Speaker 2: but it was stuck in a weird little nest, bounced
- 2:10Speaker 2: off the tree, bounced off a limb, and then hit
- 2:13Speaker 2: me in the face. Oh gosh, it was headed right
- 2:15Speaker 2: for like between my eyes, and I turned my head
- 2:18Speaker 2: last second. It got me just under my eye obviously.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty brutal.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Nothing happened at first, but it about twenty minutes later
- 2:26Speaker 2: I passed out. So my concussion. It's been a couple
- 2:31Speaker 2: of days staying at home relaxing. Yeah, I couldn't partake
- 2:34Speaker 2: in trivia, which lucky for the other contestants obviously. So yeah, no,
- 2:39Speaker 2: feeling a lot better though, thanks for asking.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Yeah, well, we're making him host radio despite him saying
- 2:44Speaker 1: he's still a little foggy.
- 2:46Speaker 3: A little foggy.
- 2:46Speaker 1: If I pass out, this will be one hell of
- 2:49Speaker 1: an episs good content. Yeah, does it stilvers good?
- 2:53Speaker 2: It's tight like everything in my right shields. It's just healing,
- 2:57Speaker 2: you know, So no, it doesn't hurt anymore. Yeah, just my.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, good on you for telling the truth. I
- 3:03Speaker 1: lied about that. I'd been like, yeah, I was skiing
- 3:05Speaker 1: a quadruple black diamonds, you know.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I don't want that karma to hit me even harder
- 3:12Speaker 2: than that rock, did you know?
- 3:14Speaker 1: So well it got you good, it did, stupid rock.
- 3:17Speaker 2: But I still need to go back to that tree,
- 3:19Speaker 2: get the frisbee, and the frisbee still out there. Yeah,
- 3:23Speaker 2: and then I'll bring home the rock too, and I
- 3:25Speaker 2: don't know, put it on my mantle.
- 3:27Speaker 1: We have garbs of like eighty miles per hour today.
- 3:30Speaker 1: That frisbee might be long gone.
- 3:31Speaker 2: It was up there, man. Let me tell you. The
- 3:33Speaker 2: rock didn't knock it down and it was a hell
- 3:35Speaker 2: of a throw too.
- 3:36Speaker 1: And now now you get to answer this question all
- 3:38Speaker 1: of Christmas hanging out with the family.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Oh, I can't wait.
- 3:43Speaker 1: So you've got a version of the story that's well
- 3:46Speaker 1: told at this point. Yep.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Nope, it's all good.
- 3:49Speaker 1: You're in good spirits about it, So that's good. Try
- 3:51Speaker 1: to be Thanks for coming today and this show was
- 3:54Speaker 1: coming out. You're gonna be on the live show that
- 3:56Speaker 1: we record tomorrow is live and so we're not even
- 3:58Speaker 1: going to address it. We're just gonna tell folks if
- 4:00Speaker 1: you want to know what happened to Corey's face, Ye,
- 4:03Speaker 1: you got to tune in next week.
- 4:04Speaker 2: There hanging all right.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Joining us on the line first is David Fabian, the
- 4:09Speaker 1: editor of Guns and AMMO Special Interest Publications. He had
- 4:13Speaker 1: a run in on public land in Wyoming with a
- 4:15Speaker 1: rancher earlier this fall that went viral on social media.
- 4:18Speaker 1: He's here to tell us that story. David. Welcome to
- 4:20Speaker 1: the show.
- 4:21Speaker 3: How Ady David Spencer, Hi, guys.
- 4:24Speaker 1: First thing, tell us about the area you were hunting
- 4:26Speaker 1: and how you accessed it.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Yeah, we were hunting this this chunk of landlocked public
- 4:32Speaker 5: public land that The only way to get there if
- 4:36Speaker 5: you don't have a family connection or deep pockets is
- 4:39Speaker 5: to take a helicopter. So we poked our rig and
- 4:42Speaker 5: we borded a helicopter and flew about four minutes and
- 4:48Speaker 5: set up camping. We could we could look back in
- 4:50Speaker 5: the distance maybe four and a half miles. We could
- 4:52Speaker 5: see our cars down there. But yeah, can't walk there.
- 4:56Speaker 3: M h.
- 4:57Speaker 1: And it took a few years for you to find
- 4:59Speaker 1: a pilot who was willing to fly you into these places?
- 5:02Speaker 1: What was that process?
- 5:03Speaker 5: Like?
- 5:03Speaker 3: Oh, incredibly frustrating.
- 5:05Speaker 5: I had this I had this idea that that you know,
- 5:07Speaker 5: I want to hunt land, my public land, because it's
- 5:09Speaker 5: got to be the shangri la of oh yeah, public land.
- 5:13Speaker 5: And so I finally I finally got the plan together,
- 5:17Speaker 5: and and then I called air operator after air operator
- 5:20Speaker 5: after air operator, and no one, No one would do it.
- 5:24Speaker 5: I think it was my twenty sixth or twenty seventh
- 5:26Speaker 5: whoa look opter or plane pilot I spoke to that
- 5:29Speaker 5: said yeah, I'd love to do it.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Okay, you found you found the right guy. I read
- 5:34Speaker 1: that at one point you were talking to someone who
- 5:36Speaker 1: could drop you in there with a hot air balloon. Correct.
- 5:39Speaker 5: No, No, I was so desperate to make a hunt
- 5:43Speaker 5: happen that I called a hot air balloon manufacturer. Oh
- 5:46Speaker 5: and I said, I said, I said, guys, have you
- 5:48Speaker 5: ever sold any hot air balloons for DIY hunters?
- 5:51Speaker 3: And they go, uh no, that's the first we've heard
- 5:54Speaker 3: of this.
- 5:55Speaker 5: And they say, they said to me, you do realize
- 5:57Speaker 5: you can't steer them right, And I did realize and
- 6:00Speaker 5: I still do think that it could be done. So
- 6:03Speaker 5: maybe next year we'll be talking about my hot air
- 6:05Speaker 5: balloon hunt.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Uh huh, Yeah, you were desperate. Max, our co host,
- 6:08Speaker 1: has a question.
- 6:09Speaker 6: Yeah, David, what's Wyoming's rule about flying and hunting the
- 6:13Speaker 6: same day.
- 6:14Speaker 5: You can do it, no problem if you use it
- 6:15Speaker 5: for if you use the aircraft for transportation purposes and
- 6:18Speaker 5: not scouting, you're good to go.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Okay, cool, Okay, So you get the four minute helicopter
- 6:23Speaker 1: ride into your spot. Tell us about the hunt itself,
- 6:25Speaker 1: which took place back in November.
- 6:29Speaker 3: So the hunt itself is very special.
- 6:32Speaker 5: My buddy had been scheming on getting on this land
- 6:35Speaker 5: to hunt for like twenty some years, and he said,
- 6:37Speaker 5: if you can get us a helicopter, then we'll have
- 6:39Speaker 5: a great al hunt. Well, we got the helicopter and
- 6:42Speaker 5: we had I mean, we had a great elk hunt,
- 6:46Speaker 5: but the hunt itself was overshadowed by two things. One
- 6:50Speaker 5: obviously we'll get to, but we also happened to have
- 6:53Speaker 5: that amazing Northern lions display.
- 6:56Speaker 6: On the Oh, that's awesome.
- 6:58Speaker 5: After we got a double on nice mature bulls, we
- 7:01Speaker 5: went back to camp and it was like a six
- 7:04Speaker 5: hour show. And the time lapse of the videographer got
- 7:07Speaker 5: on it is just like it gives me goosebumps even
- 7:09Speaker 5: telling the story thinking about it.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Good stuff. So you were, you were processing when one
- 7:14Speaker 1: of the bulls, when when the thing happened? Uh and
- 7:18Speaker 1: and you said, quote the strangest hunting encounter of your life.
- 7:22Speaker 1: That's how you described in your article on Peterson's hunting
- 7:24Speaker 1: what happened.
- 7:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, there's there's nothing that even comes close
- 7:28Speaker 5: to this one. I've had, I've had issues with people
- 7:31Speaker 5: like we all had on public land, but but nothing
- 7:34Speaker 5: like this. So so my buddy and I we left
- 7:37Speaker 5: our camp and hiked to the kill site. When we
- 7:39Speaker 5: both killed, we killed two bulls that were probably one
- 7:42Speaker 5: hundred and fifty yards apart. So we uh, we hiked
- 7:45Speaker 5: back to my ball, and we got there at nine
- 7:47Speaker 5: o'clock in the morning, and we're gonna start packing meat,
- 7:49Speaker 5: and the other guys were gonna come meet us as
- 7:51Speaker 5: soon as they got done due to filming. So we
- 7:53Speaker 5: sit down at my bowl and we look down below,
- 7:56Speaker 5: and there walking across his flat is a rancher or
- 7:59Speaker 5: another hunt. Sure he's got a you know, elk handler's
- 8:01Speaker 5: over his shoulder. And so I think myself, huh, you
- 8:04Speaker 5: know whatever, we got we got two elk in this
- 8:06Speaker 5: place last night. The rancher obviously shot one in there
- 8:10Speaker 5: as well. Yeah, they didn'tdn't think anything of it. And
- 8:13Speaker 5: my buddy, he said, I wonder if that's our other elk,
- 8:17Speaker 5: And just then this light bulb goes off my head, like,
- 8:20Speaker 5: holy cow, could we really have Could we really be
- 8:24Speaker 5: witnessing an elk theft in the process from from a
- 8:27Speaker 5: rancher who obviously came on private across private ground. And
- 8:30Speaker 5: so I just brought my binoculars.
- 8:33Speaker 3: He didn't bring me.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Left it back camp, but he siddly see binoculars, and
- 8:37Speaker 5: so we took my binoculars and looked down there two
- 8:39Speaker 5: hundred yards and he recognized the back forks of of
- 8:43Speaker 5: the elks as being one that our buddy Ryan shot,
- 8:47Speaker 5: and he said, he said, I think that's our elk,
- 8:50Speaker 5: and so I'm thinking, still no way, Like, what are
- 8:54Speaker 5: the It's not even the realm of possibility. So he says,
- 8:57Speaker 5: stay here, keep an eye on the brush line because
- 8:59Speaker 5: the guy walked in the brush. So so Ben looked
- 9:01Speaker 5: at him for I mean, he just had seconds to
- 9:03Speaker 5: determine that that could be our or hell. He said,
- 9:05Speaker 5: stay here and keep looking down at the at the
- 9:07Speaker 5: brush line. So I stayed there, and I expected this
- 9:11Speaker 5: this rancher, I'd be him. I expected this rancher would
- 9:14Speaker 5: come out and go get a quarter and take the
- 9:16Speaker 5: quarter and walk into the brush. It never came out.
- 9:19Speaker 5: And so a few minutes later, once once bend and
- 9:21Speaker 5: made up to the other kill site, all of a sudden,
- 9:24Speaker 5: I hear this voice come booming down and he said
- 9:27Speaker 5: he stole our out.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Go after him. And it's like, okay. Now that's where
- 9:31Speaker 3: it became the weirdest moment of my hunting, of my
- 9:33Speaker 3: hunting career.
- 9:34Speaker 5: And I mean, it's one thing to have interactions with people,
- 9:38Speaker 5: but it's a whole different thing when you catch someone
- 9:41Speaker 5: stealing your antlers, and they don't want you there to
- 9:46Speaker 5: begin with. I mean, that's just that's just a given.
- 9:48Speaker 5: But they go to the go to the degree of stealing.
- 9:51Speaker 5: You're stealing from you, and then they're hiding in brush line.
- 9:54Speaker 5: You just caught him like approaching that brush line. I
- 9:57Speaker 5: cannot even describe the pangs of fear that went through me,
- 10:02Speaker 5: Like I was terrified, but.
- 10:05Speaker 3: But we had to do it, so fam got there first.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Well, go ahead, No, I was just going to recap you.
- 10:10Speaker 1: You've now you've got three balls down, You've you're working
- 10:14Speaker 1: on the meat. You've watched this rancher from two hundred
- 10:17Speaker 1: yards away walk into the brush with your elk head
- 10:20Speaker 1: and then you guys march over there. What's the conversation
- 10:23Speaker 1: like with the rancher.
- 10:25Speaker 5: Well, my my buddy didn't vended most of the talking
- 10:28Speaker 5: at first, and he was he was obviously really pissed.
- 10:30Speaker 5: He wanted the guy to come out. The guy was
- 10:31Speaker 5: hiding in there. He wouldn't come out. He finally he
- 10:34Speaker 5: finally came out, and it's a it's a seventy year
- 10:37Speaker 5: old dude, and I'm just like my mind is blown,
- 10:39Speaker 5: Like I can't even say anything for the first For
- 10:42Speaker 5: the first few minutes, probably I was just recording with
- 10:45Speaker 5: my with my phone because I knew this was evidence
- 10:47Speaker 5: that we're gonna have to use. Uh and so that
- 10:50Speaker 5: is one thing that anyone in this situation, like we've
- 10:53Speaker 5: got amazing technology and just pulling out your phone and recording.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Stuff, we'll really cover your cover your basis. But uh.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Anyways, the conversation was was was very simple, like why
- 11:04Speaker 5: did this happen?
- 11:05Speaker 3: What? What what purpose did you steal this lkad for? Like, like,
- 11:10Speaker 3: what's going on? And the guy the guy didn't didn't answer.
- 11:12Speaker 5: He did a bunch of a bunch of misdirection, wouldn't
- 11:15Speaker 5: identify himself as a rancher, denied even having the bowl.
- 11:19Speaker 3: We called him out in all this stuff.
- 11:20Speaker 5: But ultimately he said the reason was he didn't he
- 11:23Speaker 5: didn't want us hunting on this outfit.
- 11:25Speaker 3: That's what he said.
- 11:26Speaker 5: This outfit meaning the public land that he's had sole
- 11:29Speaker 5: access to for uh. I guess probably forty five years.
- 11:33Speaker 5: So he's been there.
- 11:34Speaker 1: And at some point in this process, when you guys
- 11:37Speaker 1: are glassing him or walking over there, you you heard
- 11:40Speaker 1: a few gunshots? Correct? Where did those play? End of
- 11:42Speaker 1: the story.
- 11:43Speaker 3: I can't.
- 11:44Speaker 5: I can't confirm where those gunshots came from or who
- 11:48Speaker 5: did it even but I believe that that rancher shot
- 11:51Speaker 5: three times that morning, and I don't.
- 11:53Speaker 3: I don't, I can't. I can't understand the logic behind
- 11:56Speaker 3: that one.
- 11:57Speaker 5: But anyways, when when we saw him, uh, he never
- 11:59Speaker 5: had a right so I can't. I can't confirm it
- 12:02Speaker 5: with him nor what he did.
- 12:04Speaker 3: But I'm guessing.
- 12:05Speaker 5: I'm guessing he probably did it to to signify like, hey,
- 12:08Speaker 5: I got an animal, and then if if someone sees
- 12:10Speaker 5: him packing it out, like that's that's what happened.
- 12:12Speaker 3: But that's that's just that's just pure theory. I don't.
- 12:14Speaker 3: I don't think he did it to scare us or anything.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Like when you're when you're in public plan people people
- 12:19Speaker 5: shoot and you know you're not gonna you can get
- 12:21Speaker 5: out of there because another hunter's in there.
- 12:23Speaker 1: All right, So at the beginning of the conversation, the
- 12:25Speaker 1: rancher is is denying the whole thing, right, But at
- 12:27Speaker 1: some point you get him to show you where the
- 12:30Speaker 1: skull is. How did that go down? I know he uh.
- 12:34Speaker 5: I think I think he said to us the first
- 12:36Speaker 5: first time was what bowl, and and Ben said the
- 12:39Speaker 5: one you just saw, the one we just saw you
- 12:41Speaker 5: packed into the brush and so uh and so after
- 12:44Speaker 5: after a few minutes of the conversation, uh, Ben goes,
- 12:47Speaker 5: you want me, We'll get the bull, and he goes
- 12:49Speaker 5: have at it.
- 12:50Speaker 3: So Ben walks in there and he looks.
- 12:51Speaker 5: Down bottom of this little cut and there's and there's
- 12:54Speaker 5: our buddy Ryan's l Candler's. So so not only did
- 12:57Speaker 5: he did he take the bull and put it in
- 12:58Speaker 5: the brush lamp, but he tossed it down this this
- 13:00Speaker 5: ten foot ten foot ditch and and climbed down it
- 13:04Speaker 5: was it was it was not easy to get down there,
- 13:06Speaker 5: but he climbed down there, and he placed it in
- 13:08Speaker 5: a place where you could barely see it. I know
- 13:10Speaker 5: when I went to recover the antlers, because I got
- 13:12Speaker 5: him out. When I jumped down there, I uh, I looked,
- 13:15Speaker 5: and sure enough there was there was fresh boot tracks
- 13:17Speaker 5: in there, like he'd actually gone to the effort of
- 13:19Speaker 5: hiding them so you could you could barely find it.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And then weirdly he like offers to help you guys
- 13:25Speaker 1: at that point, right, Well, that's.
- 13:28Speaker 3: That's interesting how that worked out.
- 13:29Speaker 5: Because I was I was relieved that we uh, that
- 13:34Speaker 5: we got the elk at back, and I was relieved
- 13:36Speaker 5: that we didn't get shot. Truthfully, that was my biggest
- 13:38Speaker 5: fear in the whole thing. But uh, but after we
- 13:40Speaker 5: after we after attentions cooled, I realized that, hey, you know,
- 13:45Speaker 5: that guy packed this elkhead down, you know, three hundred
- 13:48Speaker 5: vertical feet, so three hundred maybe even four hundred vertical
- 13:51Speaker 5: feet and at least three hundred yards. So I said,
- 13:54Speaker 5: how in the hell are we going to get it
- 13:55Speaker 5: back up to the kill site? Like, we got to
- 13:56Speaker 5: pack it up now, So what are you gonna do?
- 13:58Speaker 5: And I really I thought I thought he was going
- 14:01Speaker 5: to say, look, guys, I messed up. You know, instead
- 14:04Speaker 5: of instead of taking out there, you can just come
- 14:06Speaker 5: out my ranch, go get your cars, take your stuff out.
- 14:08Speaker 1: That one.
- 14:09Speaker 3: I was waiting for that because I was thinking, okay, cool, I'd.
- 14:12Speaker 6: Say, gave us some money on the helicopter, right.
- 14:14Speaker 3: It would have saved us so much money if you would,
- 14:16Speaker 3: if you would have done that. But he didn't. He
- 14:18Speaker 3: never did. He did.
- 14:19Speaker 5: He did, however, offer to pack it up, so I
- 14:21Speaker 5: thought that was that was a little bit.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Of a redemption on his behalf.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Yeah, so you guys get the elk, then back to
- 14:28Speaker 1: your camp, you and the rancher go your separate ways.
- 14:31Speaker 1: At what point do you contact the authorities? And how
- 14:33Speaker 1: did that conversation go.
- 14:35Speaker 5: As soon as we had service, Yeah, as soon as
- 14:37Speaker 5: we had service, we well, we waited for our buddies
- 14:40Speaker 5: to get back, and we said, he said, you'd think
- 14:42Speaker 5: you think the hunt was a was a cool story,
- 14:44Speaker 5: like just wait to you, wait till you see what
- 14:46Speaker 5: we but we just witnessed. And so, I mean, our
- 14:49Speaker 5: friends were just slack jawed when we told him the story,
- 14:52Speaker 5: like they thought they were we were messing with them
- 14:54Speaker 5: at first, and we're like, no, I promise you we
- 14:56Speaker 5: were not messing with you. But yeah, so we went
- 14:58Speaker 5: h We went back to camp that night and there
- 15:00Speaker 5: we had good service. So the phone calls made to
- 15:03Speaker 5: the game warden and said, yep, this happened, we'll be
- 15:05Speaker 5: out tomorrow.
- 15:06Speaker 3: What do we do?
- 15:06Speaker 5: And the game warden said, uh, please meet me because
- 15:09Speaker 5: that's a that's a very odd story. And so and
- 15:12Speaker 5: so the next day we flew out and met with
- 15:14Speaker 5: the game warden and and told them and everyone in
- 15:17Speaker 5: law enforcement, everyone period, that here's the story. They all
- 15:20Speaker 5: say the same thing, like, I can't even I cannot
- 15:23Speaker 5: believe that happened.
- 15:25Speaker 6: Yeah, is that considered like hunting harassment then? Or what
- 15:28Speaker 6: did the game wardens actually say?
- 15:30Speaker 3: That's that's a great that's a great question.
- 15:32Speaker 5: And I don't I don't fully know what what the
- 15:35Speaker 5: long term legal outcome is going to be. But but yeah,
- 15:38Speaker 5: we we asked the word and the same thing, like like,
- 15:41Speaker 5: what's gonna happen here? And he goes, he goes, most
- 15:43Speaker 5: I can do his hunting harassment, but he goes, after
- 15:45Speaker 5: seeing the after seeing the videos that we that we made,
- 15:48Speaker 5: he said, uh, he said, this goes way beyond that.
- 15:50Speaker 5: So I'm gonna I'm gonna grow up in the local
- 15:53Speaker 5: sheriff's office and they're gonna do investigation and then we'll
- 15:56Speaker 5: our charges to the prosecutor, you know, entirety.
- 15:58Speaker 1: God, this this has been about month removed from when
- 16:01Speaker 1: it happened. The legal process is still playing out at
- 16:03Speaker 1: this point, right Yeah.
- 16:05Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, but god, I am I am. I am
- 16:08Speaker 5: optimistic because uh, a few weeks ago, I did get
- 16:11Speaker 5: a phone call from the from the sheriff's office and
- 16:14Speaker 5: and they actually said like, hey, we're pursuing this. We're
- 16:16Speaker 5: about to hand this to the prosecutor. So he will
- 16:18Speaker 5: he will be he will be punished for what he did.
- 16:21Speaker 5: And and that's good. That's a good thing because the
- 16:24Speaker 5: part that that scares me the most is is not
- 16:26Speaker 5: the not the brazen act that that that a lot
- 16:29Speaker 5: of these landowners go to uh to deter you from
- 16:32Speaker 5: legally accessing it with aircraft. But I worry if this
- 16:35Speaker 5: guy gets off with just a slap on the wrist,
- 16:37Speaker 5: that it's gonna it's gonna put future fly on hunters
- 16:39Speaker 5: in danger.
- 16:40Speaker 3: I mean some ultimately something bad is gonna happen.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Like it's one thing to lose nel Ken, but it'd
- 16:45Speaker 5: be just a tragedy for someone to lose their life.
- 16:47Speaker 1: M uh. Now this was not your first fly in hunt.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Have you had problems in the past with neighboring landowners?
- 16:55Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 16:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:56Speaker 5: See when I when I first started this, I thought
- 16:59Speaker 5: to myself, like, yeah, they're gonna annoyed, But what are
- 17:01Speaker 5: they gonna do? It's not their land, you know, really,
- 17:04Speaker 5: what are they gonna do? Well, what I found out
- 17:06Speaker 5: now is in their minds it is their land. They
- 17:10Speaker 5: don't have deeded, they don't have the deeded deeded rights
- 17:13Speaker 5: to it. But but they genuinely do feel and this
- 17:16Speaker 5: is this is a blanket statement. So I'm just I'm
- 17:18Speaker 5: just talking with the people we've interacted with. But every
- 17:21Speaker 5: single landowner that we've had interactions with has been less
- 17:26Speaker 5: than less than welcoming.
- 17:27Speaker 3: And and and some.
- 17:29Speaker 5: People there's there's a there's a couple that has a massive,
- 17:32Speaker 5: a massive ranch that surrounds I mean, I don't know,
- 17:37Speaker 5: maybe thirty thousand total acres.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Of public landlocked land.
- 17:40Speaker 5: But but they they're they're so extreme that they pester
- 17:44Speaker 5: us on the hunts. They find excuses to go in
- 17:46Speaker 5: there looking for cows. They they would this lady would
- 17:49Speaker 5: take her kids. Like in October, we did a flying
- 17:53Speaker 5: deer hunt and my dad and his high school buddy,
- 17:55Speaker 5: two seventy five year olds are in there hunting deer
- 17:58Speaker 5: and cow elk, and and this lady shows up above
- 18:00Speaker 5: their ridge in the middle of nowhere, and she takes
- 18:03Speaker 5: her kids for a for a loud walk right above
- 18:05Speaker 5: their camp. It's like, it's so annoying, but but she
- 18:08Speaker 5: took it to she took it two level that that
- 18:11Speaker 5: is still surprising me. She told our helicopter pilot. She
- 18:14Speaker 5: said that if if I can't have sole access to
- 18:18Speaker 5: that land and you guys keep coming in by helicopter,
- 18:21Speaker 5: then I'm going going there and ruin that land, ruin
- 18:23Speaker 5: that land so.
- 18:24Speaker 3: No one can take advantage of someone can use it.
- 18:27Speaker 1: And you're just you're like pretty vulnerable back there in
- 18:30Speaker 1: their situations.
- 18:32Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I never I've never been in combat. But
- 18:34Speaker 5: it it is like almost like you're getting dropped off
- 18:37Speaker 5: on an island because because yeah, you could leave if
- 18:40Speaker 5: you wanted to, but.
- 18:41Speaker 3: You really can't, like you're gonna be trust back trespass
- 18:44Speaker 3: to get out of there.
- 18:45Speaker 5: And the first time I went in, uh, the helicopter,
- 18:49Speaker 5: the helicopter landed and gave us a big group briefing,
- 18:52Speaker 5: and so we're sitting around the helicopter and finally, after
- 18:55Speaker 5: after thirty minutes of how to avoid getting your head
- 18:57Speaker 5: chopped off, we boarded it our flight for the for
- 19:00Speaker 5: the first trip in and this and this rancher came
- 19:03Speaker 5: around us on this four wheeler and the helicopter wasn't
- 19:05Speaker 5: running yet, but he said, he said, good luck, We'll
- 19:09Speaker 5: be seeing you soon.
- 19:10Speaker 3: And he said it like such a such a spooky
- 19:12Speaker 3: villain kind of way almost like.
- 19:14Speaker 5: Sorry, I assure you that that first night in there,
- 19:16Speaker 5: I was ready for a posse of landowners to come
- 19:18Speaker 5: there and try to lynch us from a tree.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Last question, David, you and I worked together about
- 19:24Speaker 1: a decade ago when I was at Peterson Hunting in Illinois.
- 19:27Speaker 1: How much do you miss me?
- 19:29Speaker 3: How much do I miss you?
- 19:30Speaker 1: Or loaded question me? Well, you can answer both, yeah,
- 19:34Speaker 1: how much you miss me? And then tell us how
- 19:35Speaker 1: much you miss Peoria on a.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Scale one to ten. I miss you nine point eight.
- 19:39Speaker 5: All right, Yes, I really do on a scale one
- 19:43Speaker 5: to ten for Peoria.
- 19:44Speaker 3: I just missed the people. I don't miss the place
- 19:46Speaker 3: at all.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Okay, so same good answer. Yeah.
- 19:49Speaker 3: You can read.
- 19:50Speaker 1: David's full story about the hunt in his article called
- 19:53Speaker 1: a Landowner Stole Our Trophy elk on Peterson Hunning dot com. David,
- 19:57Speaker 1: thanks for joining us and telling the story.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Thanks take care see David's.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Yeah wild crazy stuff.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I now even know what to do well. And
- 20:07Speaker 2: this crazy part is not only to land owners, not
- 20:10Speaker 2: all of them, obviously, it's it's it's a few that
- 20:12Speaker 2: get a little frustrated with this. But not only do
- 20:14Speaker 2: they believe that the land is theirs, but the animals
- 20:17Speaker 2: are theirs too. Yeah, there's a lot of that going
- 20:20Speaker 2: on that just is mind blowing me. There's a dollar
- 20:22Speaker 2: amount on each one of those trop And.
- 20:24Speaker 6: It's so crazy too because a lot of times when
- 20:26Speaker 6: I see like there's different land for sale and listing,
- 20:30Speaker 6: the realtors will advertise like, oh so and so much
- 20:35Speaker 6: public land landlocked.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Yeah right, you know, and I'm.
- 20:38Speaker 6: Just like, that's not considered theirs, but.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's uh wild timing that they like saw
- 20:45Speaker 1: it go down. You know, if they'd have been five
- 20:47Speaker 1: minutes behind in the process and didn't see it happen,
- 20:50Speaker 1: who knows how that story would have been different.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Right, all right.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Normally at this point in the show we take a
- 20:57Speaker 1: break for some listener feedback, but since we're out live,
- 21:00Speaker 1: these are questions that were submitted ahead of time, we'll
- 21:03Speaker 1: hit a few of them now and then a few
- 21:05Speaker 1: at the end of the show. The first one is
- 21:07Speaker 1: from Ryan Bowlinger Favorite way to cook waterfowl Max.
- 21:13Speaker 6: If I could every single time, I would cook skin
- 21:17Speaker 6: on duck, for sure, But that's not as an option,
- 21:20Speaker 6: especially like early season when they don't they're not as fatty.
- 21:24Speaker 6: They still have pin feathers. So a lot of times,
- 21:27Speaker 6: like duck or goose, just cook it like a steak, trim,
- 21:30Speaker 6: trim all the silver skin off, salt, pepper, garlic, turns
- 21:34Speaker 6: out awesome, especially like the snow geese, the speckle bellies,
- 21:38Speaker 6: even like some of your dabbler ducks. Yeah that's great,
- 21:42Speaker 6: but yeah, I've done things like the crock pot barbecue,
- 21:47Speaker 6: shredded meat, tacos. Options are really endless. I know Steve's
- 21:53Speaker 6: favorite way is like duck cunfy, which is also really good,
- 21:58Speaker 6: but yeah, duck or goose for strown me. I just
- 22:00Speaker 6: made some over thanksgaving phenomenal.
- 22:03Speaker 1: All these recipes on the medeater dot com. I think
- 22:05Speaker 1: my best waterfowl I've had was when Cal and I
- 22:08Speaker 1: were filming part of My Plate when we did the
- 22:10Speaker 1: cood episode. We did side by side comparison with a
- 22:13Speaker 1: mallard that the skin was left on. We cooked it
- 22:15Speaker 1: on hot rill, just like you said with a steak,
- 22:18Speaker 1: and it was. It was phenomenal. You would struggle in
- 22:21Speaker 1: a Pepsi challenge to identify that that was a mallard
- 22:25Speaker 1: versus a piece of beef. It was. It was really great.
- 22:27Speaker 6: Yeah, I think Steve is doing a comparison with a
- 22:30Speaker 6: Merganzer GoldenEye and a.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Mallard dabbler and a couple of divers. We'll see how
- 22:38Speaker 1: that goes. Corey favorite way to cook waterfowl, Well, I
- 22:42Speaker 1: don't really have much of a duck in this fight.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I don't do a lot of waterfowl hunting, but just
- 22:46Speaker 2: same exactly, I would say, the same exact way I
- 22:48Speaker 2: cook any steak, which is in a hot cast iron pan.
- 22:52Speaker 1: All right. Next question from Will pallakangis how do you
- 22:56Speaker 1: guys wash your marinal wool bass layers. I reached out
- 23:00Speaker 1: to the folks at First Light to get an official
- 23:02Speaker 1: answer on this because I didn't want to lead anyone astray.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Here's what they told me. Some companies make cleaners that
- 23:08Speaker 1: are specifically for Marina wool products. One of them is Grangers,
- 23:12Speaker 1: which First Light really likes. Some of the staff over
- 23:15Speaker 1: there and me included just uses dead down wind. And
- 23:18Speaker 1: if you aren't buying a special detergent for your base layers,
- 23:22Speaker 1: they say to look for labels that say gentle or
- 23:25Speaker 1: mild on them. As far as the washing goes, they
- 23:28Speaker 1: say it's really important to wash on a gentle cycle
- 23:30Speaker 1: with cold water. Try to separate different fabrics and colors.
- 23:33Speaker 1: For example, you don't want to put a marinal wool
- 23:36Speaker 1: kiln hoodie in washing. It has a heavy coat with velcro,
- 23:40Speaker 1: It's going to get beat up. For drying, they say
- 23:42Speaker 1: do a tumble dry or a low dry. Blasting the
- 23:47Speaker 1: marina wool in a hot dry or might shrink it.
- 23:49Speaker 1: So simply put mild detergent or specialized detergent like Grangers,
- 23:55Speaker 1: and then wash and dry at cool temps.
- 23:58Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm so horrible at this. I just throw everything
- 24:01Speaker 6: together and wash it the same, dryads the same. But
- 24:06Speaker 6: I do try. If I know I'm doing some renal, well,
- 24:08Speaker 6: I'll like try to keep it on low for drying
- 24:11Speaker 6: aspect for sure.
- 24:12Speaker 1: But yeah, I am so bad at it.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Yeah, low and slow. Same with down products too, so
- 24:17Speaker 2: natural fibers, low lightwash and then either a super light
- 24:22Speaker 2: tumble or even just hang it outside. Sure got nice
- 24:24Speaker 2: weather hanging in a pine tree.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Yep, Open air and sunlight can do a lot for
- 24:28Speaker 1: your smelly clothes. Okay, Cameron jo seven best piece of
- 24:33Speaker 1: hunting gear you use that's under fifty dollars. I'll do
- 24:37Speaker 1: even one better. I'll go under one dollar handwarmers and
- 24:41Speaker 1: tow warmers. Anyone, anyone you know who hunts her fishes
- 24:44Speaker 1: north of the Mason Dixon line, they'll find a use
- 24:47Speaker 1: for some handwarmers and some tow warmers. I think they're
- 24:50Speaker 1: still like ninety eight cents. When I was hunting in
- 24:53Speaker 1: Illinois it was single digits. Having those handwarmers and tow
- 24:57Speaker 1: warmers was like as important as my coat, you know.
- 24:59Speaker 1: And it's like a five hundred dollars coat versus a
- 25:01Speaker 1: one dollar hand warmer. They'll they'll really keep you out
- 25:04Speaker 1: there longer.
- 25:05Speaker 6: Do you find your feet? If you do the toe warmers,
- 25:07Speaker 6: your feet get too sweaty or too warm, and they
- 25:10Speaker 6: get then they get sweaty and then they get cold.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Mm no, okay. But I'm also not like walking around
- 25:15Speaker 1: in them either, right, Like, it's like, okay, this is
- 25:18Speaker 1: where I'm partier by but for the next two hours.
- 25:21Speaker 1: So throwing a toe warmer in there. Favorite piece of
- 25:24Speaker 1: gear under fifty dollars.
- 25:25Speaker 6: Max for me. It's got to be like neck gator
- 25:30Speaker 6: or a buff Yeah, actually got.
- 25:33Speaker 1: One right here.
- 25:34Speaker 6: This is the Tundra cold weather net gator forty bucks
- 25:40Speaker 6: works as a face mask, and it just works as
- 25:43Speaker 6: just keeping the wind off the back of your neck.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I love it. I like them, if you know,
- 25:48Speaker 1: even I'm a hunting in September obviously not that heavy
- 25:51Speaker 1: of one, but yeah, just the sun and wind.
- 25:53Speaker 6: I mean, just like something to help conceal your face
- 25:55Speaker 6: a little bit and then like if you can, it
- 25:58Speaker 6: kills two birds in one stone.
- 25:59Speaker 1: So yeah, Corey, tell Cameron a favorite piece of hunting
- 26:03Speaker 1: gear under fifty.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Dollars A cheap pair of aftermarket insols. Obviously, go big
- 26:09Speaker 2: and get some custom orthotics that could run you one
- 26:11Speaker 2: hundred to two hundred dollars.
- 26:13Speaker 1: What's your favorite?
- 26:14Speaker 2: I really like superfeet just because they're there. I think
- 26:17Speaker 2: there may be a little over fifty dollars now, but
- 26:19Speaker 2: just google aftermarket insouls and you'll find some under fifty dollars.
- 26:22Speaker 6: For sure.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Anything's better than the junk that they give you in
- 26:25Speaker 2: the boots. I mean, they'll last you a couple months.
- 26:28Speaker 2: But do your feet a favor and get aftermarket insols.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Make sure it matches your arch, so you might have
- 26:34Speaker 2: to bump up a size to make sure it fits
- 26:36Speaker 2: your arch. So if you can go into a bootstore
- 26:39Speaker 2: or any sporting good store and try and put your
- 26:41Speaker 2: foot on the insol, make sure it lines up with
- 26:44Speaker 2: your arch, and then you can cut it to fit
- 26:46Speaker 2: into your boot.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Yeah, put that on the Christmas list. The cutting is porn.
- 26:49Speaker 1: If you get slightly oversized and they start to roll
- 26:52Speaker 1: in your in your boot, that's that's no good. Next
- 26:55Speaker 1: question is from mo Heyeskawa. What is Phil's favorite ever
- 27:01Speaker 1: podcast episode of Meat Eater?
- 27:04Speaker 4: Thanks mo.
- 27:05Speaker 7: I don't know if I have a specific one that
- 27:07Speaker 7: sticks out, but I love the the authors that Steve
- 27:11Speaker 7: brings in because you know, I can. I don't connect
- 27:15Speaker 7: as much to all the very specific hunting talk, but
- 27:18Speaker 7: I love it when Steve specifically like a nautical disaster,
- 27:20Speaker 7: which Steve loves. And I also love, you know, from
- 27:23Speaker 7: the Edmund Fits to having David Grant talking about the
- 27:26Speaker 7: Wager because you can those guys just know their stuff
- 27:29Speaker 7: so well and Steve that you can feel Steve's passion
- 27:32Speaker 7: when he's asking questions. I also love the awkward part
- 27:35Speaker 7: of every conversation with an author when Steve tries to
- 27:37Speaker 7: get them to talk about the end of the book
- 27:39Speaker 7: and they don't want to, and He's.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Like, oh, come on, it's fun.
- 27:42Speaker 5: You know.
- 27:42Speaker 4: It never fails to amuse me.
- 27:44Speaker 7: And then it's like, I love the ones that stick
- 27:46Speaker 7: out in my mind are the ones that we had
- 27:47Speaker 7: to travel for. Like I loved going going to Werner
- 27:49Speaker 7: Hertzog's house was a trip. Going to LA with Spencer
- 27:53Speaker 7: and Randall and doing the show with Rob Lowe and
- 27:56Speaker 7: Sirius or David Chang at the Ringer was fun. Yeah,
- 28:00Speaker 7: So those are those are my favorites. I love the
- 28:02Speaker 7: authors and the comedians like Bradleyoni was a lot of
- 28:05Speaker 7: fund Dana Doute was a lot of fun too.
- 28:08Speaker 1: All right, Corey's going to answer this next one from
- 28:11Speaker 1: Redbeard fly Fishing. If you were hunting in snow too
- 28:14Speaker 1: deep for gators, what kind of pants do you like?
- 28:17Speaker 2: I'd have to go at the First Light Omen Storm
- 28:20Speaker 2: shelter pants. They got the built in splash guard velcro
- 28:24Speaker 2: that goes around your boots, plus the bootlace hook like
- 28:27Speaker 2: most gators have that keep them down when you're trudging
- 28:30Speaker 2: through the snow, and they're waterproof. Obviously they're light full
- 28:33Speaker 2: vents knee pads. I mean, I think that's my favorite
- 28:36Speaker 2: thing First Light makes in there.
- 28:38Speaker 1: What are they again?
- 28:38Speaker 2: The omen pant?
- 28:40Speaker 5: Ok?
- 28:41Speaker 1: So will you wear the gators with those ors ad overkill.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Man, if it was like melting snow and super sloppy,
- 28:48Speaker 2: I've done it, certainly, gators than those over the top,
- 28:50Speaker 2: but dry snow, no, no need. They're great for whatever.
- 28:54Speaker 2: I use the backcountry skiing too.
- 28:56Speaker 1: All right, next question, we got two more left in
- 28:58Speaker 1: this round. This is from Willie Scoey or will Is Kohe.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I'm not sure what is Max's white whale for waterfowl?
- 29:08Speaker 6: Oh, that's a great question.
- 29:09Speaker 1: I don't even have a guess. Something from the Arctic
- 29:11Speaker 1: Circle or like not even that. Okay, something banded? What
- 29:14Speaker 1: what is it? Yeah?
- 29:15Speaker 6: No, it's I mean, people might make fun of me
- 29:19Speaker 6: and because they probably have many of these, but I've
- 29:23Speaker 6: never killed, were never harvested, abandoned Drake Mallard really so yeah,
- 29:29Speaker 6: it's gonna be a bandoned Drake Mallard retrieved.
- 29:31Speaker 1: By my dog.
- 29:32Speaker 6: Okay, my dog has retrieved like three or four of them,
- 29:35Speaker 6: But me personally, I've never shot one.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:39Speaker 6: I've shot banded Canada geese, pintail teal, gadwall snow geese,
- 29:46Speaker 6: but never abandoned Drake Mallard.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Oh okay, I've only killed like five ducks in my life,
- 29:50Speaker 2: and I've killed one really really not bragging.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I've killed one banded bird. It was a speckle belly goose.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Yeah came in December.
- 30:01Speaker 6: But yeah, for the amount of mallards that I tend
- 30:05Speaker 6: to harvest, I'm just waiting on the day.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Where on the continent would you go to get that?
- 30:10Speaker 1: Because there's dudes who will, like, they know that this
- 30:12Speaker 1: refuge bands this time of year, so if they go there,
- 30:15Speaker 1: they can, you know, have higher odds. Where would you
- 30:17Speaker 1: try to do it at?
- 30:18Speaker 6: I mean, I know there's a lot of banding down
- 30:21Speaker 6: in Arkansas in the flooded timber, but I necessarily don't
- 30:24Speaker 6: want to.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Go somewhere where it's like you want to be organic.
- 30:27Speaker 6: Yeah, oh for sure. Like where we are around Bozman,
- 30:32Speaker 6: we see a lot of birds from Alberta, some Sasketchwan birds,
- 30:36Speaker 6: and they do a lot of banding up there, a
- 30:37Speaker 6: lot of banning projects. And one of these days Ruby's
- 30:41Speaker 6: gonna come back with something shiny on that orange leg.
- 30:44Speaker 6: So hopefully it's this year.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Maybe all right, last one Wally Bloomer, he says, Phil
- 30:50Speaker 1: Destiny too, Star Wars expansion question mark, I don't know
- 30:54Speaker 1: what that means. What's he asking, Phil?
- 30:56Speaker 7: Destiny two is a video game as a sequel to
- 30:59Speaker 7: the game Destiny. If you can put that together, it's
- 31:02Speaker 7: a it's a mult it's a multiplayer online shooter from
- 31:04Speaker 7: the same team who made the first three Halo games.
- 31:07Speaker 7: So bungeee based out of a bellv. Washington, and so
- 31:11Speaker 7: you know, it feels a lot like Halo feels great.
- 31:13Speaker 7: No one makes like the their art direction is unparalleled.
- 31:16Speaker 7: I put over fifteen hundred hours into this game. But
- 31:19Speaker 7: let's see, Wally Bloomer, I haven't touched Destiny since the
- 31:22Speaker 7: Final Shape, which which for everyone else was the last
- 31:25Speaker 7: big expansion downloadable content expansion. But I had I think
- 31:31Speaker 7: I said it before I had to quit Cold Turkey.
- 31:32Speaker 7: I was just wasting too much, too much time playing
- 31:35Speaker 7: that game, and I to be honest, Wally, I didn't
- 31:39Speaker 7: even know that there was a Star Wars tinged expansion
- 31:43Speaker 7: until I read this question. That is how checked out.
- 31:45Speaker 7: I am from the Destiny community, which didn't used to
- 31:47Speaker 7: be the case. But yeah, it's a so just for
- 31:52Speaker 7: fifteen more seconds of detail. The reason you waste so
- 31:54Speaker 7: much time playing these games is because it's a multi massive,
- 31:58Speaker 7: multiplayer online game. So you play with a bunch of people,
- 32:00Speaker 7: and it's like a looter shooter as well, so you're
- 32:02Speaker 7: always trying to make your number go up. You get
- 32:04Speaker 7: a gun, and then that gun helps you fight stronger monsters,
- 32:06Speaker 7: and then you get an even stronger gun, and that
- 32:08Speaker 7: gun helps you fight stronger monsters, and you watch your
- 32:10Speaker 7: number tick up, and it's just that sort of serotonin hip.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Just learning about the Star Wars make you more interested though,
- 32:16Speaker 1: or you still just know not at all.
- 32:17Speaker 4: No, I'm done, I'm done forever, Wally.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Sorry, all right, our next segment is Top threes.
- 32:23Speaker 2: I'm gonna fire this up.
- 32:47Speaker 4: That was not the right note.
- 32:49Speaker 1: All right, Each one of us had a different top
- 32:52Speaker 1: three list today. Corey, start us out. What is your
- 32:55Speaker 1: top three list?
- 32:56Speaker 2: Oh boy, Well, we're kind of wrapping up twenty twenty five,
- 33:00Speaker 2: not officially yet obviously, but it makes me always kind
- 33:03Speaker 2: of reminisced the year. So I'm doing, in no particular order,
- 33:06Speaker 2: necessarily my top three outdoor adventures. We'll see what Phil
- 33:13Speaker 2: brings up.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I can't wait to see to.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Get rid of this banner.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, So in April, Corin and I went down
- 33:20Speaker 2: to West Texas to hunt add ad and had a
- 33:24Speaker 2: successful hunt, harvested you and a ram. But that was
- 33:28Speaker 2: like a blur just compared to the the adventure down
- 33:31Speaker 2: there Montana. Boy, this is only the second time I've
- 33:34Speaker 2: hunted in another state. First time I was just guiding,
- 33:37Speaker 2: so I hadn't where was that at Colorado?
- 33:39Speaker 1: Cool?
- 33:40Speaker 2: My first season guidance, So this just being invited was phenomenal.
- 33:44Speaker 2: And then being able to explore this super rugged, dry,
- 33:48Speaker 2: arid country of West Texas. We were staring into Mexico
- 33:51Speaker 2: the whole time. It was only in the seventies, but
- 33:53Speaker 2: it was so dry that it felt so much hotter.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Not a cloud in the sky, no shade to get under,
- 33:59Speaker 1: no shade.
- 33:59Speaker 2: The wind was really nasty, especially in that shot there
- 34:03Speaker 2: up on the side of a mountain. Got to eat
- 34:07Speaker 2: some odd ad fresh over the fire, which was pretty cool.
- 34:09Speaker 3: Just the whole.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Experience was awesome.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Where's that skull at now hanging in my house?
- 34:13Speaker 2: As soon as you walk up the.
- 34:14Speaker 6: Stairs, is that is that a bowl?
- 34:16Speaker 1: A buck ram? Right? Yeah?
- 34:20Speaker 6: I was trying to think of another one.
- 34:21Speaker 2: But yeah, they're more on the sheep side of things.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Cool.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Yeah, So that was good.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Adventure number three.
- 34:26Speaker 2: Yeah, pretty awesome adventure. Let's see number two would have
- 34:31Speaker 2: been My wife and son and I did a lot
- 34:35Speaker 2: of camp floating. We like to take the driftboat down
- 34:37Speaker 2: onto one of our free stone rivers and camp on
- 34:40Speaker 2: public land, either on an island or off the off
- 34:43Speaker 2: a beach, just off the side of a of a river.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Typically we hit the Yellowstone River, which is a nice
- 34:47Speaker 2: short drive here from Bozeman, but love to take the
- 34:51Speaker 2: boat out for one or two days, one or two
- 34:54Speaker 2: nights if possible, and figure out what sort of adventures
- 34:58Speaker 2: we can go on. There's a shot and my kid
- 34:59Speaker 2: jumping off the front of the boat, super nonchalant. We
- 35:02Speaker 2: either go by ourselves or with another family. But it's fun.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Fish all day, pull into a beach wherever you want.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Bet you find some aggts in petrified wood.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Yeah, lots lots of petrified wood. I still don't quite
- 35:13Speaker 2: have the eye for it. But even though I have
- 35:15Speaker 2: found one of the biggest piece of the biggest bagg
- 35:17Speaker 2: I've ever seen.
- 35:19Speaker 6: You're multitasking in that photo.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Yeah, there I am rowing the boat with a boat
- 35:23Speaker 2: full of gear, firewood, a dog and two kids in
- 35:26Speaker 2: the front that were kicking splashing the water. Churning up
- 35:30Speaker 2: all the fish. But I didn't catch anything, but I
- 35:33Speaker 2: had to try.
- 35:33Speaker 6: Isn't that called the Sandwan shuffle?
- 35:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that's when they actually kick up the rocks.
- 35:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Yeah, so close. So just the family float trips in
- 35:43Speaker 2: the summer, looking forward to that again.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Next, what does the San Juan shuffle?
- 35:47Speaker 6: It's basically like you walk and you're kicking up all
- 35:51Speaker 6: this dirt and I do know.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Yeah, like if you're fishing a hole, it's a beneficial thing. Yeah,
- 35:56Speaker 2: You're kicking up a lot of bugs higher up in
- 35:59Speaker 2: the stream and they come down and they can chum
- 36:01Speaker 2: up the fish if you will. It sometimes works, other
- 36:04Speaker 2: times I feel like any movement can cut the fish
- 36:08Speaker 2: down to Yeah, So I like that name.
- 36:11Speaker 1: I Uh, there's a driving maneuver I refer to as
- 36:14Speaker 1: the Chicago sweep. It's where you cross multiple lanes at once.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Say you're like four lanes and you gotta get from
- 36:19Speaker 1: lane one to that's been there, sure, Yeah, it's the
- 36:22Speaker 1: Chicago sweep. And I wondered one time, I was like,
- 36:24Speaker 1: did I come up with that or did I hear
- 36:25Speaker 1: someone say it? So I googled Chicago sweep and I
- 36:28Speaker 1: couldn't find it anywhere online, so maybe I made it up.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Let's let's make it a thing though, that is universe.
- 36:34Speaker 1: That's a Chicago sweep move that you most see, but.
- 36:36Speaker 6: You remember you might get pulled over doing it.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, that's not in Chicago. That's like, you know,
- 36:41Speaker 1: that's that's driving up there. Pretty normal Chicago sweep multiple lanes.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Lanes, all right.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Number one Corey Adventure of twenty twenty five.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Number one took my wife and son to my favorite
- 36:52Speaker 2: place in the world. And I'm not going to tell
- 36:53Speaker 2: anybody where it's at. It's right on the edge of
- 36:56Speaker 2: a wilderness uh here in Montana, but really cool spot.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Took my son and my wife up there, went up
- 37:05Speaker 2: this tiny little creek to go look for some fish,
- 37:08Speaker 2: and lo and behold we caught a giant west slope cutthroat. Well, oh,
- 37:12Speaker 2: my boy caught that, which was really exciting. Just he
- 37:15Speaker 2: was finally old enough where I could take him on
- 37:17Speaker 2: the journey, which just getting there obviously is very difficult.
- 37:21Speaker 3: And he caught itentry.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Yeah, did you hook it and then hand him the rod?
- 37:24Speaker 1: Or he did everything?
- 37:25Speaker 2: No, he did everything?
- 37:26Speaker 1: Hell yeah yeah.
- 37:27Speaker 2: The dogfly yep, Catus. The dog got in the way.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Had to wrangle the dog and pull him out of
- 37:32Speaker 2: the way. But yeah, super fun, just super remote, hard
- 37:36Speaker 2: to get to spot, and I've been waiting since the
- 37:37Speaker 2: day he was born to take him back there.
- 37:39Speaker 1: So a fish that big on a dry fly would
- 37:41Speaker 1: spook me a little. It had to really spook Marshall.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Didn't want to You could see it. I want to
- 37:46Speaker 2: touch it in the photo. Yeah he's hesitant, but it's great. No,
- 37:49Speaker 2: super fun. That won't be the last time up there.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Good twenty five adventures for Corey. All right, Max, what's
- 37:55Speaker 1: your top three?
- 37:55Speaker 2: Oh?
- 37:56Speaker 6: I got top three duck hunting accessories. Yeah, for starters,
- 38:02Speaker 6: I'll start without start with these decoys. I'm a big
- 38:05Speaker 6: fan of a jerk rig. A jerk rig consists of
- 38:11Speaker 6: a weight mm hmm, a little bungee and a line
- 38:15Speaker 6: of decoys. So basically you can imagine I put this
- 38:18Speaker 6: weight out, I have this line come all the way
- 38:22Speaker 6: back to me, and it's exactly what I says, you
- 38:24Speaker 6: jerk it. It produces water motion. Water motion goes a
- 38:29Speaker 6: long ways. I would use this ten times more than
- 38:35Speaker 6: I would ever use a spinner. It's natural, ducks do it.
- 38:38Speaker 6: Ducks produce so much water motion that people overlook, and
- 38:43Speaker 6: especially if you're hunting like a pond or something, it's
- 38:45Speaker 6: super important to have some kind of water.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Only on a calm day. What if they were like,
- 38:49Speaker 1: you know, seven mile an hour wind and you had
- 38:51Speaker 1: some small waves.
- 38:52Speaker 6: It helps for sure because a lot of times too,
- 38:55Speaker 6: and people will do this in the South to hunting
- 38:57Speaker 6: the timber. They'll just rip on the jerk cord and
- 39:00Speaker 6: the splashing sound attracts ducks too, it helps. So yeah,
- 39:06Speaker 6: that's my number one. I bring this with me almost
- 39:10Speaker 6: every time I go duck hunt for sure. Number two
- 39:14Speaker 6: I think I have a photo.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Which one is it gonna be?
- 39:17Speaker 6: Oh game tote. I also brought this with me.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Too, A beautiful piece of gear.
- 39:23Speaker 6: Yeah, it's beautiful piece of gear. It helps you keep
- 39:25Speaker 6: your ducks in a row, funny, just easy hang hang
- 39:33Speaker 6: the duck by the foot or the head. And a
- 39:36Speaker 6: big reason why I like this is in waterfall hunting
- 39:40Speaker 6: you've got to keep your ducks separate, like you got
- 39:42Speaker 6: to claim your ducks, and it helps you keep you
- 39:44Speaker 6: keep keeps you legal. So like Corey and I went out,
- 39:48Speaker 6: Oh Corey would be this side, I would be this side.
- 39:51Speaker 6: So yeah, that's a thing I bring with me every
- 39:54Speaker 6: single time.
- 39:55Speaker 1: And a picture.
- 39:56Speaker 6: Yeah, it helps with good photos too. So yeah, that
- 39:59Speaker 6: was a couple of weeks ago limited Mallard, so very good. Yeah,
- 40:05Speaker 6: just you don't need it, but I like it.
- 40:08Speaker 1: What does that one run? You think?
- 40:10Speaker 6: This one's probably one hundred bucks.
- 40:12Speaker 1: It's going to have for the rest of your life.
- 40:15Speaker 6: Yeah, it's custom has Ruby's name on it.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Oh very good.
- 40:18Speaker 6: Yeah. So yeah, once Ruby goes, I'll retire this one
- 40:22Speaker 6: and then get another one for the next dog.
- 40:25Speaker 1: So all right. Number three waterfowl accessory Number three.
- 40:28Speaker 6: I kind of touched on this earlier. A neck gator.
- 40:32Speaker 6: This one's from First Light forty bucks. But like I
- 40:36Speaker 6: was saying earlier, keeps you warm, keeps the wind off you,
- 40:40Speaker 6: and also helps conceal you a little bit. So yeah,
- 40:44Speaker 6: every time there's it's cold out, I'm wearing this guy.
- 40:47Speaker 6: So get a little fleece in this side there. But yeah,
- 40:51Speaker 6: that's my top three.
- 40:53Speaker 1: And you don't realize how warm it's keeping you until
- 40:55Speaker 1: you might take it off.
- 40:55Speaker 6: Oh yeah, oh just just a little wind on the
- 40:58Speaker 6: neck is like brutals. Oh that's my top three.
- 41:02Speaker 1: All right, I'm going next I've got my top three
- 41:04Speaker 1: favorite fishing lures of all time. Phil has photos of them.
- 41:08Speaker 1: Number three is the Johnson beetle spin.
- 41:12Speaker 4: Nice.
- 41:12Speaker 1: This is my favorite lure in the world for catching panfish.
- 41:15Speaker 1: My best days of crappie fishing, bluegill fishing, or thanks
- 41:18Speaker 1: to a yellow beetle spin just like that one there,
- 41:21Speaker 1: easy to cast, rarely get snagged. You can run him
- 41:24Speaker 1: in any depth. One of the last remaining lures you
- 41:26Speaker 1: can buy that's under three dollars a piece. Non panfish
- 41:31Speaker 1: like them too. I've got some good bass on beetlespins.
- 41:34Speaker 1: One day in college, while I was fishing from my kayak,
- 41:37Speaker 1: I hooked into a giant flathead fishing for bluegill that
- 41:40Speaker 1: ate a beetle spin. I think he was probably like
- 41:43Speaker 1: twenty pounds. I fought him for like fifteen minutes on
- 41:45Speaker 1: my ultra light setup, got him to the edge of
- 41:47Speaker 1: the kayak a handful of times. Eventually he broke me
- 41:50Speaker 1: off on like my third attempt to grab him, and
- 41:54Speaker 1: he broke my heart. It would have been one of
- 41:55Speaker 1: my greatest catches of all time. A flathead on a
- 41:58Speaker 1: beetlespin from the kayak. Cool anyway, I love the Johnson Beetlespin.
- 42:02Speaker 1: So does the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. They named
- 42:05Speaker 1: it their number thirteen best lure of all time, but
- 42:08Speaker 1: for me, it's number three, the Johnson beatlespin.
- 42:11Speaker 6: I'm excited to see what what is two and one?
- 42:13Speaker 1: Number two is the rapaula shad rap. If I can
- 42:17Speaker 1: only fish with one crankbait the rest of my life,
- 42:19Speaker 1: it would be a number five shad rap in fire tiger,
- 42:23Speaker 1: just like that one there. It'll catch any game fish
- 42:26Speaker 1: fast while I pike. You can size it down for
- 42:28Speaker 1: panfish and trout, size it up for musky and stripers.
- 42:31Speaker 1: It's a real do it all lure. You control them.
- 42:34Speaker 1: You can cast and retrieve. Good for fishing five to
- 42:37Speaker 1: ten feet of water, which is where I find myself
- 42:40Speaker 1: most times. Also love the shad raps broken cousin the
- 42:43Speaker 1: jointed shad rap Those give even more wobble. They're not
- 42:48Speaker 1: quite as easy to tune as the og shad rap.
- 42:51Speaker 1: And I would bet that I own forty or fifty
- 42:54Speaker 1: of the jointed shad raps, and the shad raps all
- 42:57Speaker 1: on fire two not all on fire tiger. Just wanted
- 42:59Speaker 1: to make make sure I bet fire tigers. Is not
- 43:02Speaker 1: even top five because that's what I use so often
- 43:04Speaker 1: and lose so often. So it's my favorite. But I
- 43:08Speaker 1: think I have colors I've recognized that just should be
- 43:12Speaker 1: retired because I'm never gonna grab that purple blue thing
- 43:15Speaker 1: or whatever I have, all right. Number one is the
- 43:18Speaker 1: strike King KVD sexy Frog. Nothing in fishing brings me
- 43:23Speaker 1: greater joy than a top water bass bite. And although
- 43:27Speaker 1: I love like the scum frog and the zoom horny toad,
- 43:30Speaker 1: my absolute favorite is the KVD sexy frog. Kevin van
- 43:34Speaker 1: Dam He's the greatest bass angler ever. He's made my
- 43:36Speaker 1: favorite lure ever. The sexy frog is totally weedless. You
- 43:40Speaker 1: can cast that thing a mile. It has an internal rattle,
- 43:42Speaker 1: which not all frogs do, so it has some added sound,
- 43:46Speaker 1: great action. You can twitch it, you can do a
- 43:47Speaker 1: fast retrieve. They have seventeen colors. Now, I like the
- 43:50Speaker 1: classic leopard frog, which is what that pattern is because
- 43:53Speaker 1: most places I fish in the North, the most common
- 43:56Speaker 1: frog is a leopard frog. And here's a hot tip.
- 43:59Speaker 1: Take a scissors and and cut off like a half
- 44:01Speaker 1: inch of that houla skirt legs, and then also add
- 44:04Speaker 1: a trailer hook. You'll get better hook sets that way.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Throw it on a calm, cloudy day for best results.
- 44:10Speaker 1: That's the strike King KVD sexy frog my number one
- 44:14Speaker 1: favorite lure.
- 44:15Speaker 6: I feel like I was editing a Tony Peterson episode
- 44:18Speaker 6: one time, and I felt like he liked a calm
- 44:22Speaker 6: sunny day because it produces like a shadow sure up top.
- 44:27Speaker 1: I think you talk to ten anglers, I'll tell you
- 44:29Speaker 1: ten different things. I'd like cloud and calm. Then I've
- 44:35Speaker 1: got a few honorable mentioned. The eagle Claw croppie rig.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Croppie rigs get a bad rap for being like the
- 44:42Speaker 1: lure you associate with kids and beginner anglers, but that's stupid.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Everyone should embrace the croppy rig. They're cool. You bathe
- 44:49Speaker 1: them with worms or minnows to catch any fish in
- 44:51Speaker 1: North America. Fish it under a bobber, fish it on
- 44:54Speaker 1: the bottom, doesn't take any technique at all, and they're
- 44:56Speaker 1: the perfect lure for using while drinking a beer. So
- 44:58Speaker 1: that's a crappy rig. The Mister Twister curly tail they
- 45:02Speaker 1: make the o G curly tail grub. You won't find
- 45:05Speaker 1: anyone that'll tell you it's like the best soft plastic
- 45:08Speaker 1: for bass or walleye or anything. But just like as
- 45:11Speaker 1: an all around lure, you can't beat a mister Twister
- 45:14Speaker 1: good for panfish and game fish. Paired with the VMC jighead,
- 45:18Speaker 1: that's my favorite jig head. They'll catch anything. And then
- 45:21Speaker 1: the little Stinker dip bait worms. If you love catching
- 45:24Speaker 1: three pound channel cats in slow moving water, which I do,
- 45:28Speaker 1: then you can't beat stink bait. My favorite vessel for
- 45:31Speaker 1: Sonny's stink bait. That's my favorite stink bait is the
- 45:34Speaker 1: little Stinker dipworm. They make it real easy to set
- 45:37Speaker 1: the hook with that impregnated treble hook. I've caught more
- 45:41Speaker 1: catfish I think on that pairing of the little stinkers
- 45:44Speaker 1: worms and sunny stinkbait than anything else. Those are my
- 45:47Speaker 1: honorable mentions. Very cool, all right, Phil, what's your top three?
- 45:51Speaker 2: Okay?
- 45:51Speaker 7: Well, I ran into some technical difficulties this morning editing
- 45:53Speaker 7: a mediater podcast, so I had to pull a Ryan
- 45:55Speaker 7: Callahan and just look around my office. So, okay, we
- 45:58Speaker 7: have my top three tiki mugs that were in my office.
- 46:02Speaker 1: How many did you have in there?
- 46:04Speaker 7: Well, I've got like twenty, but I brought that. I
- 46:06Speaker 7: brought down five honorable mentions. The first one is this
- 46:10Speaker 7: Cohico mug that I got at Smuggler's Cove in San Francisco.
- 46:15Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 46:15Speaker 7: This is the mug that is pictured on the cover
- 46:19Speaker 7: of the Smuggler's Cove Tiki book, which is kind of
- 46:22Speaker 7: like the modern day Bible of tiki stuff. And it
- 46:24Speaker 7: it got a new matt and glaze and it just
- 46:26Speaker 7: it looks real, real pretty. It's a little little guys
- 46:29Speaker 7: covered in like barnacles and old old nets and and
- 46:32Speaker 7: some coral and stuff that used it in your office.
- 46:36Speaker 4: I don't use these.
- 46:36Speaker 7: If I sometimes i'll take I'll take one home on
- 46:38Speaker 7: the weekend if i'm if I feel like making a drink.
- 46:41Speaker 4: Okay, that's It's few and far between.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 46:43Speaker 7: Number two is this one I actually found at an
- 46:45Speaker 7: antique store here in Bozeman, and so it does. It's
- 46:47Speaker 7: not that flashy, but I saw it and I was curious.
- 46:51Speaker 7: It's guy says Harvey's Lake Tahoe on it.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Cool.
- 46:53Speaker 7: So I looked it up and it was an old
- 46:56Speaker 7: tiki restaurant, tiki bar that was at the top of
- 46:58Speaker 7: a hotel in Aho that was very short lived and
- 47:03Speaker 7: apparently wasn't very good. But the hotel has a lot
- 47:06Speaker 7: of history because some guy who was in debt over
- 47:08Speaker 7: a million dollars at the casino put a bomb in
- 47:10Speaker 7: a copier and uh to try to extort the hotel,
- 47:14Speaker 7: and the FBI caught wind and detonated the bomb. Nobody
- 47:19Speaker 7: was hurt, but I mean it blew up, like the
- 47:20Speaker 7: first three stories of the hotel caused like twenty million
- 47:23Speaker 7: dollars in damages.
- 47:25Speaker 4: And here's here's here's a relic from from there.
- 47:28Speaker 1: Good stuff.
- 47:29Speaker 7: And then my favorite was one that I got at
- 47:31Speaker 7: a bar called Wusong Road in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just right
- 47:34Speaker 7: outside Harvard Square. And this is you've see if you've
- 47:36Speaker 7: seen the film Spirited Away. Uh, this is the the
- 47:41Speaker 7: the Radish spirit who works in the bathhouse. And I
- 47:43Speaker 7: just think it's a great I mean it's it's it's gorgeous,
- 47:46Speaker 7: wonderful design. He's wearing a little kind of like cherry
- 47:49Speaker 7: blossom Japanese shirt tiki shirt is his hat comes off
- 47:55Speaker 7: cookie and it's also just a really cool tiki tiki
- 47:58Speaker 7: bar as well. It's got kind of like this pulp
- 47:59Speaker 7: comic book theme, like it's it's got a hard hard
- 48:02Speaker 7: to describe, but it was a nice little a nice
- 48:04Speaker 7: little fine there and near it near Harvard.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Have you drank anything out of that tiki mug once?
- 48:10Speaker 7: Yeah, most of these tiki mugs I've had one drink
- 48:12Speaker 7: out of. And then I bring him to my office.
- 48:14Speaker 7: Uh and and then sometimes I'll bring him home for
- 48:16Speaker 7: a special occasion.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Okay, I thought you had a couple of honor.
- 48:19Speaker 4: I'll get some honorable mentions here too.
- 48:20Speaker 7: This one, this one is from Galaxy's Edge, the Oga's
- 48:25Speaker 7: Cantina in in Disney World and disney Land.
- 48:28Speaker 4: This is a sort of like classic.
- 48:30Speaker 7: It tells the story of the Battle of Endor and
- 48:32Speaker 7: kind of like a tribal artwork sort of thing, like
- 48:35Speaker 7: like as if it were designed by Ewoks. So you know,
- 48:38Speaker 7: you got the ats T there C three PO and
- 48:40Speaker 7: R two D two are somewhere around here. So's the
- 48:43Speaker 7: Ewoks just absolutely uh you know, doming some Stormtroopers.
- 48:48Speaker 4: That's a good one. And then I've got this.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Surprise that didn't make top three.
- 48:52Speaker 4: Oh so many to choose from.
- 48:54Speaker 6: More.
- 48:54Speaker 7: Yeah, and then I've got this one, which looks like
- 48:55Speaker 7: an arcade cabinet made out of like drift wood. That's
- 48:59Speaker 7: that was from Funhouse, which is like an old like
- 49:01Speaker 7: a video game comedy site that I used to enjoy
- 49:05Speaker 7: a lot.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Very unique.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Jealous of that collection. That is fun. If you're not
- 49:09Speaker 1: watching this on YouTube, you're missing out on a real
- 49:11Speaker 1: visual treat.
- 49:12Speaker 4: There, big Tail, there we are. Thank you.
- 49:16Speaker 1: All right joining us on the line. Last is Wired
- 49:19Speaker 1: to Hunt host Mark Kenyon. He's here with a top
- 49:22Speaker 1: five list of his own. Mark, Welcome to the show.
- 49:26Speaker 8: Hey guys, I'm just kind of in shock of Phil's collection.
- 49:29Speaker 8: There the quite the thing to try to follow up.
- 49:33Speaker 1: Yeah, good luck, Hark makes Phil Phil real quick. Mark,
- 49:37Speaker 1: give us a dear movement update for where you're at
- 49:40Speaker 1: from Michigan these last thirty days of your dough season.
- 49:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:43Speaker 8: Well, we're coming off of a really great cold and
- 49:46Speaker 8: snowy spell for much of the country, really the late
- 49:50Speaker 8: season weather that you want. So we're coming off of
- 49:53Speaker 8: this high. Unfortunately at the very end of the year,
- 49:55Speaker 8: we're actually getting the opposite, which is a warm up,
- 49:58Speaker 8: which is not as encouraging. Warmer weather coming in here
- 50:01Speaker 8: into the Upper Midwest, some rain. We're going to miss
- 50:04Speaker 8: out on the white Christmas they thought we're going to have,
- 50:07Speaker 8: and all that's probably gonna lead to a little bit
- 50:09Speaker 8: slower deer movement than we've had over the last couple
- 50:11Speaker 8: of weeks during this kind of arctic spell, so not
- 50:15Speaker 8: exactly what you want. But with the warmer temperatures, you're
- 50:17Speaker 8: probably going to see deer moving off of the grains
- 50:20Speaker 8: like corn or soybeans and moving more towards greener forage,
- 50:24Speaker 8: native brows, green food plots, winter wheat fields, that kind
- 50:28Speaker 8: of stuff. So super fast update, but that's what's coming
- 50:31Speaker 8: down the line.
- 50:32Speaker 1: All right, good info. Now it's almost the off season,
- 50:34Speaker 1: and a great way to keep the fire burning for
- 50:36Speaker 1: deer in the off season is by reading. And I
- 50:39Speaker 1: don't know anyone who has read more books about white
- 50:42Speaker 1: tails than you. So today I want you to give
- 50:44Speaker 1: us your top five list of best books for white
- 50:47Speaker 1: tail hunters. Let's start with number five. What do you
- 50:49Speaker 1: have for us? Mark?
- 50:52Speaker 8: First off, I'd like to say that I plan on
- 50:54Speaker 8: using that bio line that I just saw below, Whitetail Enjoyer.
- 50:58Speaker 8: That's gonna be my new title.
- 50:59Speaker 3: Maybe not expert, but enjoyer pretty accurate.
- 51:04Speaker 8: Number one or because number five, in your case, will
- 51:06Speaker 8: be Mapping Trophy Bucks by Brad Herndon. If you're watching here,
- 51:10Speaker 8: it is This is a foundational text within the whitetail
- 51:14Speaker 8: world from like a tactical perspective. This is basically the first,
- 51:18Speaker 8: and I think kind of that most established resource on
- 51:23Speaker 8: understanding topography and terrain for deer hunting. So how hills
- 51:28Speaker 8: and ridges and saddles and points and inside corners of
- 51:32Speaker 8: fields and all that kind of stuff can actually lead
- 51:35Speaker 8: to deer moving in different kind of ways, and how
- 51:37Speaker 8: you can take advantage of that as a hunter.
- 51:39Speaker 3: And this uses maps.
- 51:40Speaker 8: It really teaches how to use maps and topography to
- 51:43Speaker 8: predict deer movements. So really kind of foundational how to
- 51:47Speaker 8: book in the whitetail world.
- 51:48Speaker 1: It's got kind of a textbook look to it.
- 51:51Speaker 8: Yes, yes it does. There's lots of illustrations you can see,
- 51:55Speaker 8: like very helpful actual diagrams and stuff. So if you
- 52:00Speaker 8: trying to get better deer hunting, this is like a
- 52:01Speaker 8: must have book. It's hard to find though, I think
- 52:04Speaker 8: now is what I've heard.
- 52:05Speaker 1: Okay, that looks like one. If you're not interested in
- 52:07Speaker 1: a whole bunch of text and reading, you could just
- 52:09Speaker 1: flip through and enjoy the visuals and learn stuff that way,
- 52:12Speaker 1: all right. Number four mark number four.
- 52:15Speaker 8: This is for those of you who do want to
- 52:17Speaker 8: do a lot of reading. And this is not tactical
- 52:20Speaker 8: or strategic or how to it all. This is a
- 52:22Speaker 8: book called a Hunter's Heart, Honest Essays on blood Sport.
- 52:27Speaker 8: This is a collection of essays edited and collected by
- 52:30Speaker 8: David Peterson. This is going to be getting to the
- 52:34Speaker 8: why we hunt, not just deer, but anything and how
- 52:38Speaker 8: we go about it. So there are just some amazing
- 52:41Speaker 8: short essays in this collection that talk about white tails
- 52:44Speaker 8: and a whole bunch of other stuff and really gets
- 52:46Speaker 8: kind of into that deeper philosophical side of things. One
- 52:50Speaker 8: of the best hunting essays of all time, and my opinion,
- 52:54Speaker 8: is in here. It's called The Heart of the Game
- 52:56Speaker 8: by Thomas mcguain. It's a legendary piece, highly highly recommend
- 53:01Speaker 8: for all whitetail hunters and hunters of all kinds.
- 53:04Speaker 1: All right, now to the top three. What do you
- 53:07Speaker 1: have for us? Next?
- 53:10Speaker 8: Next is Whitetail Nation and this is by a guy
- 53:12Speaker 8: named Pete Bodo. This is an under the radar book.
- 53:15Speaker 8: I don't think a lot of people know about it.
- 53:17Speaker 8: It came out, I don't know, maybe fifteen twenty years ago,
- 53:20Speaker 8: and it's a really interesting story about this guy's kind
- 53:25Speaker 8: of exploration and journey as he went from kind of
- 53:28Speaker 8: being a standard everyday deer hunter to finally trying to
- 53:33Speaker 8: kill that first big buck.
- 53:35Speaker 3: Kind of the thing that you.
- 53:36Speaker 8: Read about over the whole course of your life is
- 53:38Speaker 8: someday getting that big trophy buck. Well, he decided to
- 53:42Speaker 8: document that journey as he went from kind of where
- 53:45Speaker 8: he was to going to that next level, and all
- 53:47Speaker 8: along the way travel across the country, was in hunting
- 53:50Speaker 8: in Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, Montana, and then through it
- 53:54Speaker 8: all really ends up doing a really interesting kind of
- 53:57Speaker 8: I don't know if it's an analysis, but he he
- 54:00Speaker 8: documents the culture of deer hunting. He documents the history
- 54:03Speaker 8: of deer hunting, and does it in a really compelling way.
- 54:07Speaker 3: This is like a real writer.
- 54:08Speaker 8: He wrote for Gray's Sporting Journal and The New York
- 54:11Speaker 8: Times and all that. So it's a really well articulated,
- 54:13Speaker 8: interesting story that has that kind of narrative nonfiction set
- 54:18Speaker 8: of lessons you can learn throughout too. So really good one.
- 54:21Speaker 8: Not a lot of people know about this one, but
- 54:22Speaker 8: I highly recommend it.
- 54:23Speaker 1: In a very pretty book mark, you seem like a
- 54:26Speaker 1: dust jacket guy, Do you always keep those on your books?
- 54:30Speaker 2: Oh?
- 54:30Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, I couldn't.
- 54:33Speaker 8: My wife removes them. I kind of feel like that's sacrilege.
- 54:35Speaker 8: It's there's a lot of time and energy that goes
- 54:38Speaker 8: into designing these book covers and packaging the number right,
- 54:42Speaker 8: So I would never take that off.
- 54:44Speaker 1: I get rid of them right away. I feel like
- 54:46Speaker 1: I'm reading a book from the library if it has
- 54:48Speaker 1: the dust jest on it. Interesting, All right, Number two, Marcus,
- 54:52Speaker 1: what do you have?
- 54:53Speaker 8: Number two?
- 54:54Speaker 3: This is a tactics book.
- 54:55Speaker 1: This is a how to.
- 54:56Speaker 8: This is my favorite how to book. It's called Whitetail Access,
- 55:00Speaker 8: and it's a funny story. The title and the subtitle,
- 55:03Speaker 8: which is how to Hunt top white Tail States Cheaply
- 55:06Speaker 8: and Effectively. It's actually not really that kind of book.
- 55:10Speaker 8: It's a story that I heard from the author that
- 55:13Speaker 8: was kind of like, the publishers want to try to
- 55:15Speaker 8: make this seem more like a very clear how to book,
- 55:18Speaker 8: and so they packaged it with this title that they
- 55:20Speaker 8: thought would get people to buy it. But really what
- 55:22Speaker 8: it is is a story. It's the story of Chris
- 55:25Speaker 8: Eberhart's season in which he lived out of his minivan
- 55:29Speaker 8: traveling across the country hunting deer di y on the cheap,
- 55:34Speaker 8: from Michigan to North Dakota, Missouri, Ohio, maybe somewhere else.
- 55:42Speaker 8: But the Eberharts, Chris Eberhart and John Eberhart, his dad,
- 55:46Speaker 8: are kind of, you know, og whitetail hunters. They've really
- 55:50Speaker 8: unfortunately Chris passed away, which is really sad, but his
- 55:53Speaker 8: dad is still one of the legends in the whitetail world.
- 55:56Speaker 8: That's taught me and thousands of others a lot about
- 55:58Speaker 8: how to effectively hunt white tails and heavily pressured states.
- 56:02Speaker 8: And so this story is all about that season. But
- 56:05Speaker 8: then throughout it he's got very detailed notes about how
- 56:09Speaker 8: he did what he did, his strategies, his perspectives, his plans.
- 56:14Speaker 8: There's diagrams and maps in here again too, so kind
- 56:16Speaker 8: of similar to the other book. You can actually see
- 56:18Speaker 8: where his stand setups were and follow along with all
- 56:21Speaker 8: the hunts and the tactics. So are really good how
- 56:25Speaker 8: to mixed with a story. So that's why it's probably
- 56:28Speaker 8: my favorite recommendation for people who want to learn but
- 56:30Speaker 8: also enjoy the story along the way.
- 56:32Speaker 1: All right, here's a recap so far. Number five was
- 56:34Speaker 1: mapping white tail Bucks. Number four was a Hunter's Heart.
- 56:38Speaker 1: Number three, Whitetail Nation, number two, Whitetail Access. What is
- 56:42Speaker 1: number one?
- 56:44Speaker 8: It's kind of cliche. The number one book that all
- 56:47Speaker 8: whitetail hunters and every hunter in the world should read
- 56:50Speaker 8: is a Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold. Probably anyone
- 56:54Speaker 8: listening to me or media radio live knows this book,
- 56:57Speaker 8: but if not, highly recommend it.
- 56:59Speaker 3: It is, I think, kind.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Of like the.
- 57:03Speaker 8: I don't know, like the equivalent of the Bible for
- 57:05Speaker 8: people who are into hunting and fish and wildlife and
- 57:09Speaker 8: conservation anything. It's like a foundational text. It's the thing
- 57:12Speaker 8: that kind of sums up how we can think about
- 57:16Speaker 8: ourselves as stewards, as wildlife managers. There's great essays in
- 57:20Speaker 8: here and thoughts on, you know, how to be a
- 57:24Speaker 8: hunter and connect with wildlife, wilderness, the importance of a
- 57:27Speaker 8: land ethic. You've heard it come up a thousand times
- 57:30Speaker 8: from Steve and Doug Dern and so many others, and
- 57:33Speaker 8: it's for good reason. The opening text here, the opening
- 57:36Speaker 8: line here is there are some who can live without
- 57:39Speaker 8: wild things and some who cannot. These essays are the
- 57:42Speaker 8: delights and dilemmas of one who cannot, And I think
- 57:45Speaker 8: that sums it up really well. If you care about wildlife,
- 57:48Speaker 8: wild things, this is a book that just has to
- 57:51Speaker 8: be on your bookshelf.
- 57:52Speaker 1: Okay, good stuff, Mark, thank you for the list. I'm
- 57:55Speaker 1: going to pick up some of those this off season.
- 57:57Speaker 1: I wrote them all down, and good luck on the
- 58:00Speaker 1: rest of your season there in Michigan. Thanks for joining us.
- 58:02Speaker 8: Thanks buddy, Chris, Yeah, Merry Christmas.
- 58:05Speaker 1: Tell family high right back at you all right. That
- 58:10Speaker 1: brings us to the end of the show. We have
- 58:11Speaker 1: some more Q and A to ramp this up. Here
- 58:14Speaker 1: are some questions listeners submitted last week. First one is
- 58:18Speaker 1: from Field of Dreams seven to three one. What types
- 58:22Speaker 1: of wine do y'all pair with wild game? I don't
- 58:26Speaker 1: have a great answer for this, but when I'm cooking
- 58:28Speaker 1: like a big meal for Thanksgiving or Christmas and it's
- 58:31Speaker 1: got courses in wild game, and my wife is really
- 58:34Speaker 1: trying to like put on the ritz, she will go
- 58:36Speaker 1: ask chat GPT. She'll tell it exactly what we're having
- 58:39Speaker 1: in what order, and what the meat is and where
- 58:41Speaker 1: it came from, and then that spits out some recommendations.
- 58:44Speaker 1: So that's the best thing I can tell you do.
- 58:46Speaker 1: You guys have any thoughts on wine and wild game,
- 58:49Speaker 1: red wind.
- 58:54Speaker 6: I'm not a big red wine or just not a
- 58:56Speaker 6: big wine guy in general.
- 58:58Speaker 2: So I married a Whino. My wife bums wine, whether
- 59:01Speaker 2: pairs or not, and she's got me hooked on Malbex,
- 59:05Speaker 2: which is an Argentinian wine, real dark, bold, fruity flavors,
- 59:09Speaker 2: which pairs very well with red meat especially, but I'm
- 59:13Speaker 2: a big fan of the boxed wine.
- 59:15Speaker 1: There you go, Phil, any input on wine and.
- 59:20Speaker 4: Meat, Yeah, I'm not a big I'm not a big
- 59:22Speaker 4: wine guy. I'm sorry.
- 59:24Speaker 1: If you're interested in beer pairings, we have two articles
- 59:27Speaker 1: on the medeater dot com for you. The first one
- 59:29Speaker 1: is from chef Justin Townsend how to Pair Beer with
- 59:32Speaker 1: wild Game, and then the other one is from Kooby
- 59:34Speaker 1: Brown how to Pair Beer with Fish. We can help
- 59:38Speaker 1: you out on that front. Again. For wine, I think
- 59:41Speaker 1: chat gpt does a really nice job if you tell
- 59:44Speaker 1: it exactly what you got going on. Yeah, We're we're
- 59:47Speaker 1: not wine here, I guess. The next question is c J.
- 59:51Speaker 1: Rope Key twenty one. What is the best wild game
- 59:55Speaker 1: Phil has eaten since working at Meat Eater.
- 59:58Speaker 2: Great question.
- 59:59Speaker 7: I think I've talked about this before, but the best
- 1:00:01Speaker 7: bite of wild game I've ever had was at the
- 1:00:03Speaker 7: Old Office probably five four years ago. Brody brought in
- 1:00:09Speaker 7: some elk tenderloin, and then Michael Hunter, who's the chef
- 1:00:15Speaker 7: at Antler in Toronto, Canada, who's been on the podcast
- 1:00:18Speaker 7: a couple of times and done some stuff with us,
- 1:00:20Speaker 7: he just had a little like induction burner and just
- 1:00:25Speaker 7: like seemingly without even thinking about it, just made it
- 1:00:28Speaker 7: like a Huckleberry demiglaze and cooked this elk just perfectly,
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: and it just like it felt like it melted in
- 1:00:35Speaker 7: my mouth. It was the best tasting me and I've
- 1:00:37Speaker 7: ever had mine.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: We did not have much of a kitchen at the ogo.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: Oh no, it was non existent.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Jeremiah Donahue says, if you could ask Santa for
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: one piece of outdoor gear, what would it be, Corey.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: Man, I've been on the hunt for a good waltint.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: I'd love a Montana canvas Walton for shooting for the
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: stars here. Hard to fit under the tree, it is, Yeah,
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: well wrapped up maybe twelve by twelve Walton.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Okay, with with or without a floor? Without without a yeah, Okay,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: they're always without a floor from Montana.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: You can get them with floors yep, all right, with frame.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: Maybe a stove too, since we're at.
- 1:01:17Speaker 6: It, Okay, yeah, tell Santa to look at Facebook marketplace. Yeah,
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: I've seen a lot of good sure, yep, okay. I
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: was so close to pulling the trigger, but I didn't.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: I'll see Santa this weekend.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: He's listening, Max. What are you asking Santa for?
- 1:01:30Speaker 6: Ooh, I got two ideas. More decoys yep, never have enough.
- 1:01:37Speaker 6: Or there's this duck plucker out there called the fall plucker.
- 1:01:41Speaker 6: Oh yeah, My thumbs are pretty strong, but they get
- 1:01:44Speaker 6: tired a little bit.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: So how many ducks do you think you have to
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: kill a year to justify having one of those? They're
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: pretty spendy. Put a number on it, like fifty ducks
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: a year, two hundred ducks a year.
- 1:01:55Speaker 6: I don't know, I feel like you know, or like
- 1:02:00Speaker 6: for like guides and outfitters.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: It'd be a no brain.
- 1:02:03Speaker 6: Yeah, for like a personal if you got a hunt
- 1:02:06Speaker 6: with a lot of friends, I would probably say, like
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: a couple of hundred, Oh wow, Yeah.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Do they have any other purpose?
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: Like?
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Could could they function with a pheasant? No? No, I
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: mean not in my experience.
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know, but yeah, those are two things
- 1:02:21Speaker 6: that I would love. Is more decoys or duc Bucker. So, Santa,
- 1:02:26Speaker 6: if you're listening.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I'm good on gear, Santa. I just want permissions.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: Just give me land.
- 1:02:32Speaker 6: Yeah, that's another good.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: It's a lot of land, Santa. That's that's all I need.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: That's really hard to put under the tree.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: Deeds are pretty small call. Next question is from Will Sanchez.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: He says favorite state for fossil slash rock hunting. Uh,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: there are great rocks and fossils across the whole continent,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: but the main thing is being legal. Will, So, b
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: LM has the loosest restrictions when it comes to where
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: you can collect, what you can collect. How you collect
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: this fall is you know, picking up a shovel and
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: digging a hole. So any state that has a lot
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: of BLM land, which is you know, mostly in the West, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: those are my favorite states for fossil and rock hunting,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: just because you can do it legally. The next one
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: is from Doug Chiasen. Are there any hunting video games?
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: Phil likes?
- 1:03:23Speaker 7: The short answer is no, and that's not because I
- 1:03:26Speaker 7: don't think they exist. I just haven't really tried a
- 1:03:28Speaker 7: whole lot. I've tried the Hunter Call of the Wild,
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: which I think is probably the biggest one. Maybe people
- 1:03:33Speaker 7: might yell at me for that, but they've been making
- 1:03:35Speaker 7: putting out expansion packs for that game for years now.
- 1:03:38Speaker 7: And I played it for like about an hour and
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: a half a year or two ago, and I just
- 1:03:43Speaker 7: couldn't get into it. Seemed like there are a lot
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: of systems that I just needed to get familiar with,
- 1:03:46Speaker 7: so it was kind of like a steep a steep
- 1:03:48Speaker 7: learning curve. But there is a game coming out called
- 1:03:52Speaker 7: Cast and Chill, which came out on Steam, which is
- 1:03:56Speaker 7: like a PC marketplace, a few months ago, but it's
- 1:03:59Speaker 7: as of the it's coming out on the Nintendo Switch
- 1:04:01Speaker 7: to tomorrow, and I put it on just a couple
- 1:04:04Speaker 7: of days ago, and it looks fun. It just seems
- 1:04:07Speaker 7: like a very laid back, kind of gorgeous looking like
- 1:04:10Speaker 7: pixel art fishing game, but it looks pretty dense like
- 1:04:13Speaker 7: you can go to it. There's a whole ton of
- 1:04:15Speaker 7: fish did different bait to do, different seasons and stuff.
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: So I'm excited to try to Maybe I'll stream it,
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: maybe I'll stream it.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: He's going to play it over Christmas break.
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: I will.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Yeah, someone in a future live chat needs to ask
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Phil for his review so we can all find out together.
- 1:04:29Speaker 7: And let me know if there are any hunting games
- 1:04:30Speaker 7: that I should I should get into. I don't want
- 1:04:32Speaker 7: anything too realistic, like if it's kind of like an
- 1:04:35Speaker 7: Arcadi element to it, like that's more fun than than
- 1:04:38Speaker 7: hardcore realism to me.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Another video game question for Phil, this is from fro Alex.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Ask Phil if he ever played RuneScape back in the
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: day or he still plays.
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: I did play RuneScape.
- 1:04:50Speaker 7: Speaking of MMOs that we talked about with Destiny, this
- 1:04:53Speaker 7: was a massive multiplayer online so it's like a big
- 1:04:56Speaker 7: you know, you get on a server and there's thousands
- 1:05:00Speaker 7: of people that are all in the same playing in
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: the same area, and you can you know, squad up
- 1:05:04Speaker 7: and take on dungeons and fight, you know, go on
- 1:05:06Speaker 7: quests and stuff. RuneScape was on was one of the ogs.
- 1:05:10Speaker 7: I played it a little bit. That was my brother
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: was way more into it than me. My big MMO
- 1:05:15Speaker 7: was It's called Ragnarok Online, which was a two D
- 1:05:18Speaker 7: pixel art one. But then I also played a World
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: of Warcraft, a lot back.
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: I was.
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: I was playing Wow from the ground floor like two
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: thousand and four, I right right when it launched.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: Do people still play RuneScape?
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: Oh yeah, it's got a very active community.
- 1:05:32Speaker 7: I but again, that's like a blind spot form we
- 1:05:34Speaker 7: be because once you have kids in a job, MMOs
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: aren't the healthiest thing for you or your family, which
- 1:05:41Speaker 7: is why I stopped playing Destiny.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Last question today is from Casey Jacobsen twenty three. What's
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: your plan when out of state deer hunting in previously
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: unexplored areas. I'll answer that on behalf of deer, and
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: then Max is going to answer about waterfowl and Corey
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: for elk. My plan went hunting in an unexplored place
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: for deer. The first thing I'll look for is food,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: and that doesn't matter if I'm hunting in Idaho in
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: October or Illinois in December, which is you know my
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: spectrum this year. That was my first hunt, my last hunt.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: That's the easiest thing I can find on on X,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: and then when I'm there in person, I can work
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: my way backwards. If this is where the deer are feeding,
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: it's very easy to you know, put together where they're
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: probably betting at and traveling to get from point A
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: to point B. So look look for food for me
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: A lot of times that is probably big agriculture. I
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: spend most of my time hunting between the rocky mountains
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: and the Mississippi River, so I care about where the
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: alf alfa is, where the cornfields are, what point in
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: the harvest it is, and if there's no egg around,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: what acorn trees there might be. On X does a
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: great job of allowing you to sort by the crop
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: coverage that you can see if was was this field
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: last year? Corn? Was it alfalfa? Was it hey? Was
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: it sorghum? So so starting there thinking about what deer
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: would like in that area, that that'll give you a
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: big piece of the puzzle. Ma's answer for waterfowl, well.
- 1:07:10Speaker 6: I'm gonna kind of go the opposite of you. My
- 1:07:13Speaker 6: first thing is water, not only the lakes, river streams,
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: but I have a big obsession with keeping up with
- 1:07:27Speaker 6: current weather and rain forecast. So there's different areas that
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: get a bunch of rain and two months later that
- 1:07:36Speaker 6: rain is still gonna almost be there.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: As in forms of.
- 1:07:40Speaker 6: Flooded fields, flooded agriculture, you name it. So there was
- 1:07:44Speaker 6: this spot that I went up to Saskatchewan this last
- 1:07:48Speaker 6: September where they got eight inches of the rain a
- 1:07:52Speaker 6: month ago before. I hunted and I went there, put
- 1:07:55Speaker 6: a pin on the map and I went there and
- 1:07:58Speaker 6: there was just so many dogs.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: And you can diy waterfall in Saskatchewan. Yeah, soun's a bitches.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Need to let deer hunters do. Make you have a
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: guide or a buddy or whatever. Yeah.
- 1:08:07Speaker 6: So I went up there and hunted flooded fields for
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: three days and it was just incredible.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: So yeah, look for water.
- 1:08:16Speaker 6: And then another big thing too, is like if I
- 1:08:19Speaker 6: if I'm going to a general area, I will go
- 1:08:21Speaker 6: and make a list of landowners names and phone numbers
- 1:08:26Speaker 6: in case there's ducks there there, in case there's waterfall there,
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: feeding in their fields or just using their water, because
- 1:08:34Speaker 6: it's going to be a lot easier to just already
- 1:08:37Speaker 6: have their names and phone numbers already on a list
- 1:08:40Speaker 6: then spending the time looking it up, Oh there's their
- 1:08:42Speaker 6: house kind of thing. So I do all that stuff
- 1:08:45Speaker 6: and ahead of time.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I think to piggyback off that. Going back to deer,
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: I think it's really important to have a plan. A. B. C.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: D E f G. A lot of times I go
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: in thinking that it's going to happen for me at
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: plan A or B, and it ends up being like
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: my fifth or sixth option where I actually, you know,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: find the deer that I that I want. I want
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: to hunt all right, Corey previously unexplored areas. When it
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: comes to elk, what are you looking for?
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Yeah, for elk, I mean time, like length, the time
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: of your hunt is everything. So if you can add
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: any time to actually physically scouting. E scouting is great,
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: but you're never going to know exactly what the country's like,
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: how long it takes you to get to a spot
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: unless you're physically on the ground. So if you can
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: add a couple of days, whether it's like opening day
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: or you got a you know, weekend, even that you're
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: just hunting a new area, if you can get out
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: there in the summer late fall or early fall late
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: summer and get boots on the ground and physically see
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: the country, you're going to just have a massive leg
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: up when you're when you discover elk in that part
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: of the world, and elk are going to be everywhere
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: right like they need the same things deer need and ducks.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: But then they're going to be everywhere on top like
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: they're everywhere and they're nowhere at the same time. So
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: you can either stick to one spot and hopefully they'll
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: move in, or keep roaming around. But adding just a
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: day if you can, or a couple of days to
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: your you know, days that you're committed to hunting is massive,
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: just to see the country, get a feel for it,
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: and then if it, you know, doesn't work out in
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: your mind as to how good it's going to be,
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: then you can go to Plan B and move on
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: to the next spot.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: So good advice.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: Add some time, all right.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: That brings us to the end of this episode. We
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: have another pre recorded episode of Radio Live next week,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: but then it's back to our regularly scheduled programming after that.
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: Thank you for listening, Happy holidays, Merry Christmas. We'll see
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: you in twenty twenty six. By now,
