- 0:00You're listening to Benzer with the boys.
- 0:04From high octane to adrenaline.
- 0:07Starting lineups to starting grids.
- 0:11Grid iron to grand prix.
- 0:16Get laced up.
- 0:17Let's go!
- 0:18It's time for Benzer with the boys.
- 0:32Yo yo yo, welcome back to Benzer with the boys fast laps.
- 0:36I'm Smelty, I'm back from almost the dead.
- 0:40Uh, was very sick but Tyler hosted for us last episode did an amazing job.
- 0:45He's back here again.
- 0:47Tyler, what's going on?
- 0:49How we doing brother man?
- 0:50I'm excited to be back.
- 0:51Word up, word up.
- 0:53And right next to him we got Cole.
- 0:55Cole, how's your week been?
- 0:56I mean I know it's, what is it?
- 0:57Is it Tuesday?
- 0:58Yeah it's Tuesday.
- 0:59How's your week been?
- 1:01Yeah it's been going good so far, you know.
- 1:03Still got a lot of it left.
- 1:05Right.
- 1:05But you know it's been a good hiatus so happy to be back.
- 1:08Word, word.
- 1:09Uh, Joe, our co-host right here, what's poppin'?
- 1:13Excited to be here, favorite part of the week.
- 1:15Wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
- 1:17With that, let's just hop right in to our Jetta race.
- 1:22Um, obviously before the race had even started, what was it Friday night?
- 1:28Carlos Sines was having pain and ended up needing the ol' uh, emergency appendicitis
- 1:35surgery.
- 1:36Um, has anybody here had that surgery?
- 1:39Have you really?
- 1:39Yeah I had the appendicitis uh, horrible.
- 1:42The whole night I thought I had to poop.
- 1:44Oh dang.
- 1:45Instead of actually laying on the ground I'm just trying to tough it out.
- 1:48Thought I had a bad cramp or something, something that wouldn't come out, you know?
- 1:52And then all of a sudden I went to my buddy the next morning.
- 1:55I was in college and I was like, you need to bring me to the ER.
- 1:59And I went in and they were like, no you need to go to like an actual ER.
- 2:03Like you need to go to the ER because it's about to burst.
- 2:05Oh he took you to like some urgent care or something.
- 2:07Yeah.
- 2:07He's like, you need to go because it's about to burst.
- 2:10They put me on some meds and I was vibing.
- 2:11You were vibing the next thing you know?
- 2:14You woke up and you had stitches on your freaking gut.
- 2:17Yeah they're pretty good with the stitches now.
- 2:19It's pretty small.
- 2:20Some cute nurses though.
- 2:21I was in college living my dream.
- 2:24How do you know?
- 2:24You were vibing.
- 2:26Oh yeah.
- 2:28All right well with that obviously uh, we had an F2 driver, Oliver Bierman take over
- 2:36for Carlos Sines.
- 2:37I mean what's your first reactions on how, how he did?
- 2:40Anybody?
- 2:41Mad impressive.
- 2:42You know he got one practice session in and then straight into Quali.
- 2:47He was like, it was like 0.03 away from even getting the end of that Q3 spot over Lewis.
- 2:52He looked impressive from start to finish this whole weekend.
- 2:56Yeah and obviously super impressive.
- 2:59Also with Bierman, they talked about how you know people who when they come up
- 3:04when not getting a lot of practice, they kind of you know they can do okay in the qualifying,
- 3:08but the race is where they suck.
- 3:10And it looks like that's where he excelled throughout the race.
- 3:12He just got cleaner and cleaner.
- 3:13The end of the race staying away from Lewis and them.
- 3:17He just super impressive.
- 3:18Yeah completely agree.
- 3:20Um coming up to F1 for anyone super difficult and I agree his race looked really really good.
- 3:27He was Haas's reserve driver I think.
- 3:29He did some testing for them last year.
- 3:32Coming into F1 especially for a team like Ferrari who is their youngest driver to date so far.
- 3:38Yeah he killed it.
- 3:38But no I mean to say that he had a stellar day is probably an understatement.
- 3:43I mean I didn't expect that from him at all.
- 3:45Let alone you had Danny Rick back there struggling.
- 3:48But like the fact I mean at least he was able to get in a somewhat decent car.
- 3:53So do you think that factored into it as well?
- 3:56Like what if what if he would have been in I don't know um not Alpine what am I saying?
- 4:03Yeah Alpine.
- 4:04What if he would have been in one of the Alpine cars?
- 4:05Does he perform just as well?
- 4:06I mean but there's also not as much pressure right?
- 4:09So he performed also with pressure in a fast car.
- 4:13And just to go back to like kind of how the race went I thought it was pretty awesome.
- 4:16I think F1 did a great job of kind of showcasing the father and the emotion he was going through.
- 4:19I thought that was really cool to like watch that especially later on in the race when he almost
- 4:23on that very last turn before the straightaway he had little wheel squirrel.
- 4:27He you know popped back a little bit.
- 4:29It was it was super cool seeing that but yeah I think it's even more impressive to step up
- 4:32in a big car that needs points that's in second.
- 4:35You have to make sure that you know if he doesn't get points there that just lets other teams get
- 4:38a lot closer and he ended up beating out some of the teams that were right there.
- 4:42Beating out some of their racers like Hamilton and them.
- 4:44So I think it's even more impressive that he stepped into you know a high performing car
- 4:48and performed how he did.
- 4:50Yeah I mean to say like if he was in a different car would he have performed as good?
- 4:54No Ferrari's the second best car on the on the circuit right now.
- 4:57So I mean he went into like one of the best situations he could.
- 5:00And I mean not necessarily like he definitely has something to lose because if he goes and
- 5:04he finishes 15 or below like he probably doesn't get looked at as a seat next year.
- 5:09But now what position is Ferrari in?
- 5:11You're already committed to Leclerc.
- 5:13You're committed to Hamilton.
- 5:14This cat came in and more than impressed raced a heck of a lot better than Hamilton.
- 5:18Now Hamilton and Mercedes pit stops is why Hamilton finished where he did.
- 5:22You know if they would have double stacked with that first step
- 5:24he likely would have finished higher than he did.
- 5:26But I mean it puts puts Ferrari in kind of a precarious spot here.
- 5:31I mean he's probably going to get that Haas seat next year as he should but that's interesting.
- 5:37It'll be extremely smart for Haas to do that but like is because he did so well is Ferrari
- 5:43in a similar situation to what Mercedes was literally just in with Hamilton.
- 5:47They didn't want to lose old what's his name the guy that's coming up for Mercedes next the young cat.
- 5:53Antonelli.
- 5:54Yeah so it came out that they were worried about losing him if they continue if they like
- 5:58signed Lewis for a little bit longer of a deal.
- 6:01So aka why may be a reason why he departed or will be departing but
- 6:08do you think Ferrari is kind of in that boat now with with how well he did in his first F1 race?
- 6:13I mean it could be but it's also in the same regard is like this cat's stupid young
- 6:18and you don't go to Haas to have a whole career at Haas right.
- 6:22So if you go to Haas he's still going to be a part of that Ferrari Junior program or that
- 6:25Ferrari program so you know let's call it what it is Lewis don't count more than five years left.
- 6:30I mean he has the capability but I don't think from a mindset he wants to do that and so you
- 6:36know he's essentially just kind of keeping that seat warm for for Ali here until we can see what
- 6:41he can do in that Haas seat.
- 6:43Yeah and I mean if you're Ferrari you're not upset right.
- 6:46I mean you have Hamilton and Leclerc coming next year you're not upset.
- 6:49He's going to go somewhere else and good for him it's just going to help his chances.
- 6:53We obviously haven't seen a lot of these big racing teams like Red Bull and them fill in
- 6:57that other seat yet or what's going to happen with these other seats there's so many availability
- 7:01this year and I think based on some of the contracts that they sign it just might show
- 7:05where he ends up in two years if he signs a two-year with Haas or Williams or whatever.
- 7:10Yeah for sure I think we absolutely see him get his his stepping stone as early as next season.
- 7:16Absolutely something that the the boys here with the banner crew keep an eye on.
- 7:21Let's just talk about that start again though.
- 7:23So you kind of got that that jump start from from Lando which was not a penalty and as Tyler
- 7:31actually alluded right before the podcast they did take a long time to figure that out.
- 7:36I kind of forgot about that thoughts on the fact that he didn't get a penalty.
- 7:43I mean it was clear as day I think we all think he should have probably gotten a penalty.
- 7:47As a McLaren fan yeah I'm happy he didn't but he definitely should have gotten a penalty.
- 7:52I think the only light at the end of the tunnel that I can see from the situation is that they
- 7:58they followed the system the system told them what to do and so they did it and we can only
- 8:02hope that that's what they follow for every other single driver.
- 8:06I think he deserves a penalty there I mean they just gave Magnuson 20 seconds
- 8:10for what he did I mean Haas don't need any more downfall like that they're already back there
- 8:1620 seconds you might as well give him 100 minutes you know if they're fighting for 10th it's not
- 8:20going to change 20 seconds versus whatever. I think he deserves at least a five second penalty
- 8:25for that we saw it a lot last year too they were giving out those penalties and off the track
- 8:29penalties especially in the first race last year like they were nothing they were just handing them
- 8:33out to everybody I feel like it should have been a five second at least. I don't know how it wasn't
- 8:39they I just it's mine by even the commentators throughout the race were just like I don't know I
- 8:43don't understand why this is taking so long and how this isn't a penalty like I mean if you look
- 8:47at it he didn't gain an advantage by doing it because he like he jumped and then kind of slowed
- 8:52down and as he was kind of slowing other drivers were starting so you know he almost kind of like
- 8:57did more harm than good by inching forward but for sure it's the letter of the law like it's rules
- 9:03are rules if we're going to have them enforce them or tweak the rules where you have some leeway there.
- 9:08And then just allegedly the sensor's not picking it up I mean that's that's pretty wild I mean
- 9:13that's I'd assume in every aspect of F1 they're using top of the line technology. Well you don't
- 9:19even need the technology for that it was clear as day. Well I know that's for sure it's like 100%
- 9:24so how do we do it? They probably need the technology for proof for numbers on a paper
- 9:29to say that he jump started but we all saw it. Yeah yeah very clearly very clearly a jump start
- 9:36I completely agree deserved a penalty I think it comes down to the FIA covering their butts right.
- 9:44We all saw it happen I don't think anyone would have been surprised if he got a penalty but
- 9:48if the rules state this very specific thing I mean we look back at Carlos Sines in Vegas last year
- 9:53he got screwed over with that with that uh that drain cover obviously very different situation
- 9:58but the rules state we're gonna state it's a penalty if the transponder or the the system
- 10:04states it's a penalty then I guess they got to stick with that. Yeah well I mean Lando's your
- 10:10boy so. You got to just bring some human element into it though too for a certain degree you know
- 10:16like the sensor like. But it's the top racing series in the world. That's what I'm saying like
- 10:22so it's you'd think it would be like all because all the eyes are on it like it's everything's
- 10:26under a microscope so I don't know I mean I think what ultimately what I want to say it was is he
- 10:31didn't gain an advantage so they didn't penalize him because like it's typically you would do that
- 10:36to gain an advantage you know you go off track. Sure like if he would have kept going or something.
- 10:40Yeah if he wouldn't have stopped himself I think it would have been penalized but. He did stop
- 10:45himself pretty quick but yeah. He did and he'd really and he didn't have a great jump. No. You
- 10:50know so it's like he didn't really like I said he didn't overall gain an advantage. So maybe that's
- 10:54what saved him at the end of the day didn't quote unquote gain an advantage so they just didn't give
- 10:59it to him. So I have a question just because I'm of the mindset that there was a sensor that didn't
- 11:06pick it up didn't call it out. Do you guys think that they're just saying that to cover something
- 11:10else up that maybe there was a human element that they were like no that isn't it. I mean I just
- 11:17think that like they're saying you know cover their butts and all that. I think naked eye sees it
- 11:22pretty obvious too. I think the sensor is just something because they're getting so much backlash
- 11:26they had to throw something out there. I think it's probably where they went with the sensor. It's
- 11:29just an easy out for the FIA. Yeah I think that's fair. You talk about human element you think back
- 11:35to all the bad calls of 2021 last race of the season. You know got to bring it out there.
- 11:44The human element obviously doesn't work all the time. No and I mean that leads us right into
- 11:50something else that's not a human element. Gasly not even getting a chance to complete a lap.
- 11:58I mean we just see Alpine once again failing. I just don't understand. I don't get it.
- 12:05He's got to be so upset. Who wouldn't be? Gasly it just sucks because obviously we all I think
- 12:11here love Gasly. He's kind of our guy last year. Mutual interest. Yeah yeah last year we talked
- 12:17about him all the time how much we loved him and how much we wanted to get a good spot and
- 12:20this just sucks. You know you hate to see it out of Gasly and I'm a Gasly fan over Ocon so you know
- 12:26hopefully it's Ocon's issue next week. And how can you race well and like prove that you still have
- 12:31it to get your next potentially final contract in F1 when you can't you can't even can't even start
- 12:37the race. Yeah that Alpine. Because of a gearbox issue. That Alpine team just some absolute mess
- 12:42right now. Just absolute dumpster fire. They can't even get the car under weight let alone worry
- 12:47about like getting their mechanics right you know. That team is just absolute dumpster fire. Just
- 12:52just straight rubbish. Straight rubbish. So moving right along obviously we did have somebody hit the
- 13:00wall. Our boy Lance striking the wall. Thoughts on what he was trying to do right there on that turn.
- 13:09At all. I mean everybody's shaking their head. I mean we're all in agreeance so.
- 13:13We saw people overshoot that turn and take it too fast and go you know over the the strips there
- 13:18outside of the racing track. But I mean I don't know like it's almost dumb to keep wasting time
- 13:24on Lance Stroll. He's almost guaranteed to have a failure every race. He's there because of his pops.
- 13:30Hopefully his pops sells that team so we can get a real race driver in there. Do you think I mean
- 13:34no matter what if Lance Stroll's dad he's in there there's no way nobody else is in that seat.
- 13:39Correct. Absolutely. That's been well documented. Even in the uh drive to survive his father at like
- 13:47the big dinner they threw or whatever with all the guys there. They were talking about the fact
- 13:52that like you know is my son Lance one of the you know best racing drivers who's saying that in the
- 13:57drive to survive. It's just tough you know it's like at one point as a father you're like I got a
- 14:02big money I got big investment here. You know how can I win some races? How can I get more people like
- 14:08Alonzo up in the top 10? Yeah that's what's tough because like the whole reason Lawrence Stroll like
- 14:13is doing what he's doing is so he can win a world championship with his son. That's his whole driving
- 14:19force behind getting into racing is because of Lance. So I don't think that'll ever come. That
- 14:23day will come if if Lance decides to not want to race anymore it's because Lance decides he doesn't
- 14:27want to race anymore. He's such a prima donna. And like in order for them to ever win a championship
- 14:32if they were in the Red Bull car and they're as far in front as Red Bull is he's not checka. He's not
- 14:38doing one-twos. He's not there. So I mean they need a car that's light years ahead. They need to go back
- 14:45to the old Mercedes and get that car out to just gas up the Red Bull because they just don't have
- 14:51it. There's no car that can blow them out of the water anymore and Lance is never going to be that
- 14:55guy that's number two that's going to get you the points to secure a title unless you have like first
- 14:58tap and that's just going to get you enough by himself. I 100% agree with you there. I mean at
- 15:05least Lance gave me my third favorite radio comm of the race. They were like I can't remember who was
- 15:13talking to him but they said Lance can you get the car back and Lance said Kev I'm gonna need you here
- 15:17homie. Lance says no I hit the wall. I just god that was awesome. But again that was my third so
- 15:25just real quick because I got to share it. Beerman was my second. Somebody there was like you are
- 15:30doing a mega job. I thought that was hilarious. You're doing a mega job. I don't know it's not
- 15:35something we say here over in the states. Oh dude you gotta listen to more George Russell. Dude I love
- 15:40well my number one was actually Albon and all he said was the word naughty. Like all of a sudden
- 15:47he like I don't know what it was for or whatever and I didn't look into it but all he said was
- 15:52naughty. I want to say it was one of Magnuson's penalties because he was like he was getting real
- 15:56they were rubbing elbows and then Albon gets on he just goes. He just is naughty. Dude it was hilarious god.
- 16:01Anyway back on track. Speaking of. Lewis and George actually say mega a lot. Do they? Yeah it's a very British thing like
- 16:08Amanda will say it. And that's why. It's very British. I haven't heard it. Okay sounds good. Now I know I learned
- 16:15something today there's my one thing every day. Speaking of Magnuson what about all them penalties
- 16:21holy crap. I know we already talked on it but I mean you can argue that if he didn't race as well as he did
- 16:29after the majority of those penalties that Hulkenberg probably doesn't get a point. Yeah it's just
- 16:37pass doesn't need that right. I mean they don't need anything bringing them down they just need help.
- 16:42And it just seemed foolish to give 20 seconds. It's just insane. It's an outrageous amount. And they even
- 16:50like they were saying that they didn't tell him because honestly he was kind of the buffer for Hulkenberg.
- 16:56So it makes sense why they didn't tell him that he was getting the penalties. At the end of the race I'd be heated.
- 17:00Yeah you find out you finish you finish 11th right behind your teammate you're like no I didn't get points
- 17:05but at least it wasn't bad. Boom jumps to 15 or whatever it was like ah man it would throw you off.
- 17:12Yeah. But I mean I guess I guess I'd want to know. Even if I was running. I'm pretty sure he knew.
- 17:18Because they said them there was radio comms between them that said like good job Kev.
- 17:24Like you're doing a good job holding the like the pack back for Hulkenberg. So it was already like
- 17:28given to him like hey you're not going to win this team race let's make sure Hulkenberg gets that 10th spot.
- 17:33I think it was eventually I'm saying like the first few laps they knew for a while even after
- 17:37the 10 second but they gave it a couple laps before they told him because they didn't want him to
- 17:40change his driving style and how he was driving. That was kind of what the comms were from the
- 17:44announcers and stuff on it. But yeah eventually I'm sure they told him. Yeah I'm just a quick look up.
- 17:49Yeah 10 second time penalty he found out about that and then lap 22 he was hit with the second
- 17:54legal overtake penalty. But at that point I mean he was playing defense he was playing for the team.
- 18:01There was he knew I'm not getting points this race this is for Haas and man did he come up to bat.
- 18:07He was crazy crazy performance. He did a mega job. He did a mega job. Yeah even Niko
- 18:13afterwards like on the on the comms was just like like thanks Kev for you know or thank Kev for
- 18:18being whatever he did. It was something on the lines of like thanking Kev. Niko Hulkenberg
- 18:22thanking Kevin Magnussen for playing a team game. I mean I think Niko doesn't get points if Magnussen
- 18:28doesn't pull off that performance. Yeah that was crazy. Huge for Haas though especially this year
- 18:32with all the top dogs kind of taking those top eight points you know top nine points. For Haas
- 18:37to get any points any points this year is huge so it's a huge to get one early on. No doubt no doubt
- 18:42um just moving right along real quick like super speed round. What's what's up with Daniel Rick?
- 18:51Like I mean it's just it hasn't looked good straight up and I know that you can't even say
- 18:56the car's not that good. The car's not there because Yuki's not doing great either. He's not but I'd say
- 19:02he's doing better than Danny Rick and like I was low key looking for Danny Rick to blow him out of
- 19:06the water to make it hard for Red Bull to decide what to do with that second seat but right now
- 19:12you have no reason to move on from Sergio so. Well yeah I mean at this point two races in neither of
- 19:18those Alphator sorry the V carbs are getting that Red Bull seat. No. Two races in a lot of season left.
- 19:24Well no doubt and I know we're like speculating like you said two races in out of what 24 they got.
- 19:29I think it's 24 this year. Um plenty of season but it just uh it just doesn't it's not old school
- 19:36Danny Rick at all not even close. I think it's too soon too soon to call you know throw in the
- 19:41flag. You're still learning the car but. Yeah I just think it's too soon for Danny Rick. I think
- 19:47he's gonna be okay later on in the season especially if they're gonna be helping out each other with
- 19:51Red Bull or whatever they do there you know if they can get some something going in that car
- 19:55I think they're gonna be okay. I think Danny Rick will he'll show out he'll show out. Um I'm hoping
- 20:02I love Danny Rick so much so I'm really hoping that he he finds his stride and he gets back up
- 20:07into those those point places. A kind of new information for me I don't know if you guys heard
- 20:11about this but apparently he had a 41 second pit stop during that race and that kind of brought
- 20:16him all the way to the back of the grid. It wasn't said anywhere but. Who was? Who did? Danny Rick.
- 20:21Gosh I do feel like I remember that. Um. I feel like they couldn't get the wheel on or something
- 20:26it was super weird. He spun out in the uh the second to last lap so now he just finished out
- 20:31the race there. So maybe it was a little bit of strategy as well that you know caused him to have
- 20:36some bad woes during the race but in general he also qualified behind Yuki. He wasn't making a
- 20:40ton of paces. Obviously the pit stop was probably just the icing on the cake for a bad day. Um
- 20:46yeah hopefully I mean home race coming up um Australians don't tend to do amazing at that
- 20:51race but hopefully he can break that trend. But let's be honest with that too. I mean obviously
- 20:57everybody wants to see Danny Rick back in the Red Bull. It's not gonna happen right neither of the
- 21:01neither neither of the V-Car cards or cars or drivers jeez are gonna be in the actual Red Bull
- 21:07right? No it'll be Fernando. It really. No. Whoa whoa whoa whoa. We'll table this because that'll
- 21:14be a conversation probably throughout the season as we see how Danny Rick and or Yuki do um because
- 21:20I could see Alonzo in the seat as well. That'd be wild with him and Max dude. But let's just let's
- 21:26table it. If you got right notes do that because that'll be a great conversation. But we do have
- 21:33to move on. Our our podium was for Stappen, Checo, LeClaire, between Tyler, me obviously being Smelty,
- 21:46Cole we all took for Stappen and Checo. We were all wrong on our third drivers. Joe cleaned house
- 21:54got the podium 100% correct so at the moment Joe is leading in our our points system.
- 22:01Um again Tyler's Tyler Cole Smelty all at three points Joe at five out here killing it.
- 22:13Back into some F1 news real quick. We only got a couple things. Um Carlos Sainz could be back for
- 22:21the Australian Grand Prix this weekend but it's still kind of uncertain as again we established
- 22:26earlier it was a Tuesday so um we still don't know but on Thursday of this same week this is
- 22:33according to essentiallysports.com so take that with a grain of salt. Um but on Thursday he is
- 22:40a son allegedly due for the FIA's mandatory medical evaluations which include a crucial driver
- 22:46extraction exercise. This test is quite demanding as it requires the driver to unbuckle the safety
- 22:51harness, remove the steering wheel within seven seconds, exit the car and then return the wheel
- 22:56to its position with another five seconds. Do you think you could do that Cole after a week of having
- 23:02your appendix taken out? I know you're a top tier world class athlete. I don't even know how those
- 23:09things go back in you know. I'd be stuck there for 20 seconds just trying to figure out how the thing
- 23:12pulls off and goes back in but I was saying or I was thinking do you think they're not in so much
- 23:17of a rush at Ferrari because of how good Beerman did last week? 100% 100% why would you rush him?
- 23:23You already have the seat filled. I think you're doing Beerman uh you know a good service but you
- 23:30could also do Carlos the good service if he's ready to go to bring him back early too. That's
- 23:34that's the kicker to me. It's like does Ferrari have anything to lose for putting Beerman out there?
- 23:39No. Carlos sure does. He has everything to lose. He don't got a seat next year.
- 23:45So what I mean if you're Carlos do you just I mean you know you gotta be fully 100% healed to like
- 23:55go you know be good to go. I think though a lot of these F1 drivers are just ready to go like I mean
- 24:00I trashed Stroll but him racing with the wrists and stuff last year was impressive. It was ridiculous.
- 24:05I'll give him that too. And I think Carlos has the same mentality a lot of these racing drivers do.
- 24:09I think he wants to get back in the car. It's tough because you said Ferrari doesn't have a lot
- 24:15to lose and I agree to an extent but they do have a lot to gain from putting Carlos in there right
- 24:20because with Carlos behind the wheel you do have you know three four five better position placements.
- 24:25You have an opportunity to potentially hit podium. Yeah. You know he could still beat out Leclerc or
- 24:30if Leclerc has a failure or whatever and has to retire well you still have Carlos and you feel good
- 24:35about that. So you feel good about Beerman getting you points but you don't feel good about Beerman
- 24:40getting you Carlos signs points. Not yet but again he's super young but yeah I mean you make a very
- 24:46valid point on that. Really the only other bit of news I guess that kind of came out today was
- 24:53uh Ralph Schumacher who's like the younger brother of Michael also the only pair of brothers to ever
- 25:00win an F1 race actually. Allegedly he's saying that Horner should just straight up you know call it a
- 25:08day and and resign. Obviously Max Verstappen's dad feels the same way as we know and you guys touched on.
- 25:15So is there more to this like truly why have we not heard from you know the alleged victim of the
- 25:24situation? I don't know I thought it was pretty huge of him coming out here. Right, right Tyler's
- 25:29over here giving us the Johnny Menzel money sign but. There's one reason you haven't heard from her.
- 25:35There's an out of court settlement and she can't talk. But there's also I mean didn't Horner just
- 25:42come out recently and basically say that uh yeah I'm kind of done with that that's behind us and
- 25:47all that he just came out and said that after the race didn't he? He actually keeps using the words I won't
- 25:51go into detail in a lot of his interviews. If you look back which is just like I mean that's probably
- 25:57the you know politically correct way to say it right but like he's obviously doesn't want to talk
- 26:02about the situation which again leads to maybe the money situation but and I don't and I don't want
- 26:09to keep talking about this literally every episode but it's still a thing in in mainstream
- 26:15quote-unquote mainstream f1 media right it's still it's still being talked about there's just got to
- 26:19be something more does f1 get nervous or fia whatever it may be fom whatever do they get nervous
- 26:26like that this still continues to be a thing and at some point they under the table push Horner out
- 26:31the door. He definitely doesn't have that Drake thing going on if you know he doesn't want to
- 26:34get it shown out there. Oh man. It's probably what happened you know. Oh man. I love talking about that.
- 26:42Boy Cole was really waiting for that one. I'll tell you what I think there's probably stuff that
- 26:48we don't know happening at Red Bull right but I also think the media can be pretty
- 26:53pretty pretty conniving right. 100%. They're just gonna they're gonna push out whatever they think
- 26:59is gonna grab people. I get so many f1 news on my phone and 80% of it is just crap.
- 27:08It's annoying right so I can only I can maybe go to skyport skysports and f1.tv f1.com whatever
- 27:16but that that's pretty much it. I just think they don't have anything to really talk about right now.
- 27:20Last race they had Oli which was good so they could talk about Oli for a little bit but it's
- 27:24slow news week let's bring Christian back into the limelight quotation marks. See if anyone's
- 27:30still interested. Even back to the Horner statement and the way that Red Bull has handled it they're
- 27:35kind of asking for it from the media though. Like they're not helping their case in any way. They're
- 27:39kind of asking for all this stuff and publicity from the media. All publicity is is bad publicity
- 27:46still good oh my god I can't say that word publicity is bad publicity still good publicity.
- 27:54You had it we got you we know what you're saying. In this case I would say no because it's not only
- 28:00bad for Red Bull but it's bad for all the f1. It'll pull more eyes there but not the eyes you want.
- 28:06Yeah yeah it doesn't put the the sport of f1 which is rapidly growing with you know drive to survive
- 28:11the last number of years in a good light right now. Right so I think you know as much as we don't
- 28:17want to talk about it every episode I think there's going to be continuing continually man
- 28:22neither one of us can talk be things that come out every week. I mean there's going to be some so
- 28:27you know we'll just keep an eye on it but with that we'll just head right into our Australian preview.
- 28:32And heading right into our our Australia preview. Joe's actually going to give us some
- 28:38information on last year's Australian Grand Prix. Just a couple key points to look out for what's
- 28:44going on. Yeah got a little bit to go through for last year. Real quick before we jump into the
- 28:49highlights some quick fun facts about Australia. The current track we're on Melbourne introduced in
- 28:541996 however we saw the first Australian Jeep in the year 2000. The first Australian Jeep in the
- 29:01year 2000. We saw the first Australian Jeep happening in Adelaide in 85. Most wins Hamilton,
- 29:07most poles Schumacher and another really fun fact Australian drivers never finished on the podium
- 29:13at a home race since the track first joined the world championship. We got Mark Webber closest at
- 29:19fourth. We saw Danny Rick actually get fourth but then he was later disqualified due to fuel regs.
- 29:25He got you're right twice yep no no he got second. He got second. I'm sorry I meant second my bad.
- 29:30We saw him get on the podium second place later disqualified for breaching the fuel consumption
- 29:35rigs. I'm so glad they got rid of the fuel like regulations. So now it's just like you don't have
- 29:41to like pit for fuel like there is no essentially fuel right so just yeah I think so I think at this
- 29:49point I don't think they were still putting in fuel it's just when he finished the race he was
- 29:54lower than he was supposed to be. Oh gotcha gotcha. They do that so to make sure that when you're
- 30:00finishing the race if you use all your fuel you don't just stop on the track in the middle of the
- 30:03race. Yep all right we'll get into some highlights. We saw Perez starting in the pit lane after a
- 30:10qualifying accident and an exchange of some engine parts under Park Fermet when he wasn't supposed to
- 30:16do that. First lap Max getting overtaken by Russell on the first turn of lap one and Leclerc getting
- 30:22beached on lap one for retirement bringing out the first that's right first safety car of this race.
- 30:28On lap seven we see Albion hitting the wall for the second safety car and the eventual red flag.
- 30:34We actually saw Mercedes one two for six of those laps until that second safety car come out where
- 30:39they make a tire change for George. I mean shortly before the red flag meaning everyone gets that
- 30:45free tire change and George is left out on bad strategy. We see a restart on lap 10 Hamilton
- 30:52leading Max and then a car engine failure on lap 18 for George starting the virtual safety car.
- 30:59All right and then things get a little bit crazy after about 30 or so laps lap 54 we see Magnuson
- 31:05with the late race wall hit taking out a tire bringing out that third safety car on lap 54
- 31:11and then the second red flag on lap 56. And wasn't it right after like that uh that red flag where
- 31:18like everybody started stopping on the track and like almost rear-ending each other all over the
- 31:23place I think I can't remember who it was went flying through the sand it's just like oh my god
- 31:28dude I think it was almost really bad. If you bring anybody like who hasn't watched F1 they want to
- 31:33see Rex they want to see crazy races this is that race it's kind of like being a new F1 that me and
- 31:39Tyler always talk about I think you too Schmelzi we always talked about last season was a real
- 31:42first season we watched full through and it was it was pretty exciting to see this race because
- 31:47you're like what is going on right now you know something we weren't we weren't used to as newer
- 31:52fans. Absolutely yeah the race restart lap 57-58 um yeah definitely 57 out of 58 uh Verstappen,
- 32:01Hamilton, and then Alonso yeah mess out to that starting line everyone kind of keeping back trying
- 32:07to gain for some reason a little bit of a little bit of time to each other and yeah bunching up
- 32:12on that one corner I'm gonna do like just a quick play by play of that race restart because it it's
- 32:18crazy and I think it's needed I think it's just the best way to kind of convey what happened here
- 32:23uh race restarts lap 57 out of 58 turn one we see signs bumping into Alonso getting them off the
- 32:30track into the turn we see Perez becoming a lawnmower after narrowly missing Ghastly we see Sargent of
- 32:36course tagging De Vries and both getting beached and then we see both of the Alpines run into each
- 32:41other into the wall on turn two right before Stroll locks up into the gravel trap and turn three or
- 32:47four bringing out the third and final red flag what a crazy this is all happening by the way within
- 32:54the first sector of the race they haven't even gotten over that first sector line yeah what a
- 33:00crazy restart that's insane I mean my first thought of course as new I mean we've all been kind of
- 33:05into f1 for the last number of years whatever it may be but um being newer watching every single
- 33:12race when I can uh yeah that was pretty wild the first thing I could think about was like wow that
- 33:17was a lot of money right there that just that just went up in a bunch of little carbon fiber pieces
- 33:23all over the track well even like after the race who was the old president of Alpine oh hi Joatmar
- 33:29Joatmar came out and goes oh yeah it wasn't either the driver's error like come on dude nah
- 33:36nah that was so bad the Alpines in each other were so bad come on you think about like realistically
- 33:42if you think about that race versus like how this race was kind of the setting stone for a lot of
- 33:46teams for the rest of the year especially those lower teams as far as getting big points a team
- 33:51like out or uh sorry a team like Alpine if they can just stay together and get through there
- 33:57talking about a lot of points a lot of well-needed points so it is it sucks but it's interesting
- 34:02because this race a lot of those lower teams got a lot of big points yeah well when you have eight
- 34:08dnfs you know it opens up for so much you have two places that aren't getting points so if you're
- 34:15one of those 12 drivers remaining you have a pretty good chance especially starting from a restart
- 34:20right so they had a restart so it was a race start to start with the 12 drivers so it's it's
- 34:24anybody's game at that point as long as you can make it through turn one literally i remember
- 34:28being all like gassed up right before that restart because of the fact of russell obviously you just
- 34:33touched on this but russell taking verstappen on that first lap i was like oh this might not be the
- 34:38race verstappen wins yeah i was really really looking forward to see what lewis could do off
- 34:42that restart because like you're like i mean even from the the start as a whole lewis got a huge
- 34:47jump out from that start too so it was like mercedes had the pace in this race last year absolutely
- 34:55yeah crazy restart obviously another red flag coming out right after that due to all the
- 35:01carnage on the track i also remember watching it live and just kind of waiting for it to kind
- 35:05of finish up obviously not hoping it would finish up soon but just knowing that we got about
- 35:1020 seconds of racing and then another 20 minutes of a red flag waiting for everything to get
- 35:16cleaned up and then back out there i like the word carnage we don't get to use that enough in f1 we
- 35:20don't we use it we would use it every week if we had a nascar pod but f1 it's like it's wild we get
- 35:25to use yeah carnage probably for the carnage probably for the best we don't get to see carnage
- 35:30every single week but yeah it is fun when it happens i think um all right uh after the the
- 35:36final restart of the race uh because all of this happened before the first sector line we saw the
- 35:41race restarted back to the race restarted back to where it was after the second red flag on lap 58
- 35:46out of 58 cars took the formation lap into the checkered flag signs dropping from fourth to
- 35:5212th because of that penalty he got from hitting uh alonzo uh getting that five second penalty
- 36:00dropping just within a matter of seconds after crossing that checkered flag max hamilton alonzo
- 36:06finishing that race in the podium i mean max hamilton alonzo i just say that would look a
- 36:12little bit different this year a little bit different obviously i mean probably the number
- 36:18one storyline obviously max we haven't talked about max at all this episode we might as well
- 36:23we have some listens uh in the netherlands do we not kev kev says 118 so we got to give them their
- 36:31we got to give them their flowers um max is probably winning again this week moving on um
- 36:40but the australians i think would be a number one story here uh obviously danny rick just really
- 36:46isn't involved in this conversation either one of them will get points well and that's what i want
- 36:52to talk about is there like we keep seeing improvement from him is he going to beat out
- 36:57lando at some point with within the within the team um yeah to be to be that number one i would
- 37:05say lando's still their number one right now right yeah but he just beat him i mean beat him last
- 37:09race and he's looking very good this year so far as it goes he just is showing that he took his
- 37:14offseason very seriously yeah and even the second half of last year i mean he was giving lando a run
- 37:19for his money 75 80 percent of the time he wasn't beating him but they he was right there with him
- 37:24and yeah i mean piazzari's looked really good do we see williams hit some points this week
- 37:33i don't is their time to to get a point or two yeah i don't see why not i think well i think we
- 37:39see alban at least fighting for points absolutely sergeant i'm unfortunately not too hopeful for
- 37:46but alban has something he really needs to prove they both have something to need to prove but alban
- 37:49is the one who's been you know he's been the one showing up for sure um i don't want to talk about
- 37:58every single team but i mean we don't usually talk about some of the bottom teams i mean we saw haas
- 38:03get a point last week if k-meg doesn't have all those penalties and runs even a slightly better
- 38:09race he could get a point or two do we see another point for haas this week i could see haas up there
- 38:17um lp and i don't williams i just don't think that williams car is where it needs to be sure i think
- 38:22the only chance that williams like williams alpine or even stake have a chance at points as if we
- 38:28have another three or four dns for sure is that a possibility absolutely are we gonna see carnage
- 38:35this year i definitely me and tyler were just kind of off mic you're talking about it but
- 38:40it's a fun race because all the crazy turns and stuff and and uh i want to thank whole shot
- 38:46but um the grid starting off the race right um it's that first time it's kind of a whole shot right
- 38:54yeah right that's not what a whole shot is boys you want what do you mean a whole shot
- 38:59whoever has the lead going in like coming out of the first corner that's what we're talking about
- 39:03that's kind of what you're racing for at the australian grand prix i'm thinking whole shot
- 39:06because when i was like 13 i used to race four wheelers then you call it a whole shot when you
- 39:11start out the race i couldn't think of the grid you know starting like that but um it still applies
- 39:16in a way in an outside way we we're trying to say grid we wrote no not when you're trying to say
- 39:22grid yeah 100 but i there's a big thing where um that first turn is crazy and there could be really
- 39:29anything that happens this week there it's interesting to see obviously the bottom teams
- 39:33i think haas right now has some pretty good straight line speed too so that's definitely
- 39:38somebody we can see taking that you know nine tenth it's tough now because you've got four
- 39:42teams basically taking up to top eight and then wherever alonzo finishes within there nine spots
- 39:48are pretty taken unless one of those guys have a dnf or a failure or something like that top nine
- 39:53spots is taken so you know who's gonna get that tenth i could see a house i could see magnussen
- 39:57what's crazy to think about those like nine positions too if you look at the performance
- 40:02of how everybody has looked this year you make a strong argument louis hamilton is number nine on
- 40:07that list i mean this season 100 percent two races 100 so what what is that though is that is that
- 40:14the mixture of the car being more geared towards george or is that i don't know is that louis
- 40:19struggling a little i don't think there's like the whole like a car being more geared towards the
- 40:23other i don't i can't get behind that because why wouldn't they just do it to each car then like
- 40:27you know what i mean they make fine adjustments to each car the only thing that can tailor or
- 40:31like a driver's like like liking to their rights is you can adjust certain things on the car but
- 40:35the cars are identical going into it you can you can do certain adjustments braking adjustments
- 40:39like you can affect drag to a certain degree but it's it's like i just think that i don't know
- 40:46it's tough because george is outperforming him like tenfold right now i mean the only only team
- 40:51that really pops up where they kind of gear a car towards somebody's red bull with for staffing
- 40:54right but albon squashed that well he talked about how it's basically like when you race with that
- 40:59car it's like racing on 10 sensitivity well no albon had an interview it was a little bit of
- 41:05it was a couple months ago now he came out and he said like yeah everybody that says that like
- 41:08that's simply not the case because he was in that like that was everybody when he went in that red
- 41:12bull car was all his cars tailored for your staffing he's like the car is just so advanced
- 41:18and it takes such a high high high level of skill to drive the car that for staffing has mastered
- 41:23the ability to drive that car the car isn't sorry go for it sorry yeah i wouldn't say the car is
- 41:28necessarily tailored for him as much as like the car is the car and for staffing has taken the most
- 41:32like he has like mastered that car because even between like when mercedes runs sorry smelty
- 41:38no it's good with hamilton and bata's right like that car was the car bata's was up there bata was
- 41:44the bata's was i'd say performing better than what jackal was for red bull obviously but it was you
- 41:49know it was like the car is the car it's just how good is the driver that can drive that car and and
- 41:54for sapin for sapin proved that to me last season at this race between turns eight and nine it's so
- 42:03faster there and he decides to pass louis on the outside of the turn that that's insane that takes
- 42:10some kahunas you know what i mean like max has the skill dude seriously but i mean obviously it's a
- 42:16mix of the car too but you can't deny that the dude's talented but as far as like louis i think
- 42:22we see this pretty consistently over the last few seasons as well where he doesn't start off the
- 42:25season hot but as things build up he gets better and better and by the end of the season you're
- 42:29like oh that's louis hamilton right last year we saw this he started off the season not so hot
- 42:34i think honestly i think the last couple seasons especially with this mercedes he's not comfortable
- 42:39in the mercedes they needed to make some shifts for him to be more comfortable he's just not
- 42:44comfortable in the car right now i think that's why he has this but he'll get comfortable and it's
- 42:48louis he'll be fine um last year it took him till the end of the season for him to really
- 42:53kind of pop off and get some of those big placement points but you know i i think you know ninth right
- 42:58now for sure but we'll see him being up top five top four again joe we didn't hear from you at all
- 43:04for this this year's australian race what are you looking at this weekend then we'll get into some
- 43:09our podium predictions yeah i mean turn one is gonna define the rest of the race i think
- 43:14uh if you're at the back of the pack you're probably okay mid and mid in front you got to
- 43:19look out for people behind you we've seen it plenty of times well claire didn't beat himself
- 43:23he got hit by stroll uh so you know that's gonna really define the rest of the race in terms of
- 43:30drivers man i would love to see an asi up at least get some points i think oscar's gonna do it in
- 43:35fact i might go one better i think oscar might beat out lando in some fashion this weekend i think
- 43:40i think just the pressure knowing that he's he's got a stellar rookie season down he feels good in
- 43:45the car and now it's his home race i'm really rooting for him to get a good placement i don't
- 43:49think it's podium worthy per se but way up there uh and then on the mercedes front just a little bit
- 43:57george just looks i don't know if it's he's more comfortable in that car or he's better in that car
- 44:02but something's happening with louis right now i do get that last year it took him like throughout
- 44:07the season he got better and better but he was fighting for first i mean i mean russell and
- 44:13hamilton were fighting for first in this race last year i don't see them anywhere close to that
- 44:18at all so something happened between the car between then and now hamilton said he car i
- 44:24don't know hamilton says it's a whole new car they completely scrapped the concept last year they
- 44:27built a entirely new car this year and todo came out i think it was last week and said the car
- 44:31ain't working yeah in fact i think one of the news headlines that i try to avoid but i saw uh they're
- 44:38managing expectations for this this weekend they think there's fundamentally something wrong with
- 44:42the car going into it yeah i think mercedes unfortunately is not going to be where we want
- 44:47them to be at the end of the race they're so far behind in the high speed corners right now it's
- 44:52not even funny you look at louis even trying to fight last week i forgot who it was it might have
- 44:56actually been lando yeah of lando and it was like during the like the like the top line speed like
- 45:02the long stretches and jetta louis was catching him that was he was getting in dsr drs zone he
- 45:07was getting to a point force like point to getting 2.4 of him and then those first six turns on jetta
- 45:12last week those high speed corners lando was flying away like that mercedes is so slow in
- 45:17the high speed corners right now it's not even funny it like uh especially with louis i always
- 45:22see a video pops up where he's in like 18th and the engineer goes it's hammer time it sucks that
- 45:29right now all we deal with with louis is louis saying i can't catch them these cars way too
- 45:35fast so fast quick it's a lightning what is he what does he always say it's a uh it's a rocket ship
- 45:42i want to i want to get back to where louis and the engineer are going hammer time that's fun
- 45:46that's exciting this just sucks it sucks to see louis in this car it sucks to see everything about
- 45:50it tough well and we're gonna get that change soon enough to be honest did you have one more
- 45:56thought one thing just to add from a news perspective as well that i forgot about is it uh it came out
- 46:00and um bono is not coming with louis to go to ferrari um he has a clause in his contract that
- 46:07keeps him in in mercedes um so science his current engineer will be hamilton's engineer in ferrari
- 46:13next year no pressure interesting yeah that's interesting i did not know that um why don't you
- 46:20just lead us off right off your podium from this week in the australian grand prix mine's gonna be
- 46:26i mean i got the podium from last week i got rostapp and leclerc and czecho okay okay i think
- 46:32it's gonna take something monumental for a ferrari red bull not to finish one two or take the podium
- 46:38cool i'm gonna agree it's gonna be rostapp and czecho and leclerc obviously i picked science last
- 46:43week it sucks that he was you know uh with the appendicitis but yeah it's gonna be ferrari up
- 46:50there and and leclerc is looking good right now he seems comfortable with the car good to go there
- 46:54for sure for sure joe well who we got i love to break a pattern but i don't think i'm gonna be
- 46:59doing that this time around uh there's just facts in front of me this was a hard decision i was
- 47:04going between obviously max and czecho definitely in that podium i was going between russell and
- 47:08leclerc uh charles won 2022 uh he was tagged by stroll uh last year i think he could have
- 47:15gotten a really good place if that didn't happen um murk last year was also very very strong they
- 47:20just had bad luck in car issues but at the end of the day the car is not the same as it was last
- 47:25year it's definitely worse than it was last year and leading up to the grand prix they're saying
- 47:31like i said before they're saying there's something wrong with the car they still need to fix it it's
- 47:34not where it needs to be so for that max czecho and leclerc dang okay well we have three matching
- 47:42ones so i'm just gonna go ahead and change it up i do think czecho will get to um that's fine or
- 47:48on the podium is what we're doing right um i wanted to be fun and say like oscar or something but i
- 47:55don't believe that he can be beat out both ferraris and honestly george which is actually who i'm
- 48:00gonna go with i think there's just gonna be a random surprise i think george will figure it out
- 48:05lewis will struggle with with their car issues but um i don't want to be the exact same so we
- 48:11took a risk and it will pay off for me i like that prediction um but with with that that i mean that
