- 0:56SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to announce that Wild in Seattle,

- 1:04My first thanks goes to Mountaineer Books for all of their hard

- 1:08SPEAKER_00: this beautiful book.
- 1:10My second goes to artist Elizabeth Person for her wonderful,
- 1:14whimsical watercolors.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: The book is worth buying simply for her illustrations.
- 1:20Wild in Seattle is an outgrowth of my first three years of the
- 1:23Street Smart
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Naturalist newsletter.
- 1:25It brings together 48 of my favorite essays about natural
- 1:29history in Seattle and
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: her surroundings.
- 1:31They include classics such as Dead Trees Tell No Lies,
- 1:35Birding at 60 Miles Per Hour,
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: the memory of a tree, and hope is a baby orca.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Divide it into three sections, geology, fauna, and flora and habitat.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: The essays illustrate many of my passions,
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: curious facts,
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: attention to detail,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: connections to place,
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: wordplay,
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: bad attempts at humor,
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: and celebration of the nature of place.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: As with all of my books,
- 2:01my main goals are to encourage people to get outside and
- 2:05explore the world around
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: them and to develop stronger connections to home.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Here are some of the cool things that excite me from the book.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Stalactites at light rail stations,
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Coast Salish woolly dogs,
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: voracious Torito clams,
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: 3.5 billion year old building stone,
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: a big old erratic,
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Seattle super blooms,
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: hope,
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: humor,
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: and inspiration,
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: a convivial list of local terms of place,
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: a wonderful illustration of our dog Taylor,
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: the science of otter poop,
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: aka sprints.
- 2:37In many ways,
- 2:39Wild in Seattle is my paean to the singular natural world of my hometown.
- 2:44I'm continuously amazed by the life that I find and the stories
- 2:47that I learn,
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: whether in downtown Seattle,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: on a neighborhood stroll,
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: or in our backyard.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: We are truly blessed by this place.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Although focused on Seattle,
- 2:57I like to think that the essays will provide inspiration to
- 3:00people living in other areas.
- 3:02Stories are all around us if we take the time to slow down,
- 3:06pay attention,
- 3:07and observe.
