- 1:14SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 1:15SPEAKER_06: And today's a fun one, folks.
- 1:17SPEAKER_06: We want to pull back the curtain a little bit and talk about something homeowners don't always realize.
- 1:22SPEAKER_06: When a contractor walks into your home for the very first time, we're actually observing almost immediately.
- 1:28SPEAKER_06: Not in a judgmental way, not at all.
- 1:30SPEAKER_06: Just want to make sure we throw that out there.
- 1:32SPEAKER_06: But just from years of experience of being in homes, tons of homes, right?
- 1:36SPEAKER_06: Uh when you've been around thousands of homes like we have, certain things jump out right away.
- 1:40SPEAKER_06: So today we're going to share 10.
- 1:42SPEAKER_06: 10 perfect contractor, that's right, 10x.
- 1:46SPEAKER_06: Contractor often notices in the homes in the first 60 seconds, right?
- 1:49SPEAKER_06: And some of these things might surprise you a little bit, right?
- 1:52SPEAKER_06: So if this is your first time tuning in, hey, welcome.
- 1:55SPEAKER_06: If you've been with us from the beginning, thank you for continuing the journey with us as we help mid-Illinois homeowners design smarter, build better, and make confident decisions about their homes.
- 2:06SPEAKER_06: And let's face it, Caitlin, we're stretching beyond Middle Illinois with our podcast.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're everywhere.
- 2:12SPEAKER_06: We are everywhere.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: We're in DC.
- 2:14SPEAKER_06: We are in DC.
- 2:15SPEAKER_06: We have, I have, yes, I've been contacted by people.
- 2:18SPEAKER_06: It's crazy.
- 2:19SPEAKER_06: This past week, I've been contacted by so many people that I haven't heard from in a long time.
- 2:23SPEAKER_06: And they're like, hey, we love the podcast.
- 2:24SPEAKER_06: Can't wait till the next one drops, right?
- 2:26SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: So it's really hitting, man.
- 2:28SPEAKER_06: It is.
- 2:28SPEAKER_06: It's hitting.
- 2:29SPEAKER_06: I'm proud of us.
- 2:29SPEAKER_06: It's hitting woman.
- 2:30SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 2:31SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 2:31SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 2:32SPEAKER_06: Not that I hit women.
- 2:33SPEAKER_06: That's not what I insinuated there, folks.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: Guys, that's like the Gen Z, you know, like hitting.
- 2:37SPEAKER_03: Like it's it's good.
- 2:38SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 2:38SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 2:40SPEAKER_06: You found the Easter egg.
- 2:42SPEAKER_06: Easter is coming up, right?
- 2:43SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah.
- 2:44SPEAKER_06: You know.
- 2:44SPEAKER_06: And welcome back.
- 2:46SPEAKER_06: We missed you here, right?
- 2:47SPEAKER_06: We missed you last week.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: Very upsetting.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: You know, it was a dog kidnapping.
- 2:51SPEAKER_06: Yep, yep.
- 2:52SPEAKER_06: It's all good.
- 2:52SPEAKER_06: It's all good.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: Not the big dog guys.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: Don't worry.
- 2:55SPEAKER_06: No, big dog doesn't do that.
- 2:56SPEAKER_06: Doesn't hit women, does not kidnap women.
- 2:57SPEAKER_06: No, he doesn't do any of that stuff.
- 2:58SPEAKER_06: Let's make sure that's clarified.
- 3:00SPEAKER_06: And on the record, that's not what Big Dog does at all.
- 3:04SPEAKER_06: Anyway, we got to put Caitlin in stitches today.
- 3:06SPEAKER_06: But before we before we get into it, we got to pay some bills.
- 3:09SPEAKER_06: And by paying the bills, we need to talk about our 10x partner of the podcast, and that is elite roofing professionals, right?
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: Our guy.
- 3:15SPEAKER_06: And you know what?
- 3:16SPEAKER_06: They've been busy this week because we had some storms come through.
- 3:18SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 3:19SPEAKER_06: We had a few spot tornadoes, little ones, but hey, it's a tornado.
- 3:22SPEAKER_06: Some hail.
- 3:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, some hail.
- 3:23SPEAKER_06: Hail.
- 3:24SPEAKER_06: Hail.
- 3:24SPEAKER_06: Hail.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: Oh, hail.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: We had hail.
- 3:26SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 3:26SPEAKER_06: I know.
- 3:27SPEAKER_06: You know what?
- 3:27SPEAKER_06: I actually heard up north.
- 3:29SPEAKER_06: Uh Josh was actually telling me, for those that following the podcast, he was honest with last week, right?
- 3:34SPEAKER_06: But he said that up north was it uh Kankiki.
- 3:37SPEAKER_06: I think they had five and six inch diameter hail.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: Yes, I saw that.
- 3:40SPEAKER_06: That's cannonball size features.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: I saw it on somebody's in somebody's hand.
- 3:44SPEAKER_06: That's going through a roof, through a ceiling, into the home.
- 3:47SPEAKER_06: That's big shit.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: But it wouldn't go through the storm shelter.
- 3:51SPEAKER_06: Correct.
- 3:51SPEAKER_06: It would not go through a storm shelter or a safe room.
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: So but Blake can fix it for you guys at elite roofing.
- 3:58SPEAKER_06: When it comes to protecting your home, they are the ones you need to call for protecting your home after a storm or even before on an older roof or home, right?

- 4:44SPEAKER_06: I was actually at a job site yesterday where we had Elite Professionals salesperson on the roof with me at our client's house to give them the top service that they bring.
- 4:54SPEAKER_06: So shout out shout out to Chris Hostetter there from Elite Roofing Professionals, uh taking care of business.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: And I see the trucks all around, man.
- 5:03SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 5:03SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 5:03SPEAKER_06: It's called Omnipresence.
- 5:05SPEAKER_06: Grant Cardone would be proud with a little omnipresence from them.
- 5:09SPEAKER_06: Awesome.
- 5:10SPEAKER_06: Hey, speaking of Grant Cardone, I need to put this pad away because that was a Grant Cardone meeting I had this morning.
- 5:14SPEAKER_06: We'll move on to that.
- 5:15SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 5:16SPEAKER_06: Little name drop there, right?
- 5:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: I I even got to have some of that.
- 5:20SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 5:20SPEAKER_06: Thank you, Chris.
- 5:21SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 5:21SPEAKER_06: Sharon's.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: Starting my day off perfect.
- 5:23SPEAKER_06: You know what?
- 5:24SPEAKER_06: We we talked about this off air.
- 5:26SPEAKER_06: I'm going to bring it up now before we really get into the meat potatoes because you know how I get just these thoughts and these things that inspire me, right?
- 5:33SPEAKER_06: Because I have them all over my monitor.
- 5:35SPEAKER_06: Those that are watching the camera can see on my monitor.
- 5:37SPEAKER_06: I've got stuff all around it.
- 5:38SPEAKER_06: You know, I actually had one I just put up added to it this morning.
- 5:41SPEAKER_06: Omnipresence over perfection.
- 5:43SPEAKER_06: Be everywhere at once and perfect it as you go.
- 5:47SPEAKER_06: You don't have to be perfect.
- 5:48SPEAKER_06: Just get the shit out there.
- 5:50SPEAKER_06: Let people know who you are.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: And I actually, somebody last night, another fellow business owner who's getting ready to kind of start off.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: He said, he even put into his chat GPT, I can't believe I'm just now remembering to tell you this.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: How can I be like big dog construction as far as like marketing?
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: I swear to God.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: No.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: It said you need to have omnipresence, even if you have, or did maybe not that, like you need to own the share of voice.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 6:16SPEAKER_06: Which is obviously something.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: It's the same thing.
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: So well, I didn't want you to think I just made that up, but I knew it was the same thing.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: And I cannot believe.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: And I was like, listen, some people think that they only need advertising because, oh, you need to get more business.
- 6:31unknown: No.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: But you want to be the guy everywhere.
- 6:35SPEAKER_06: You know what?
- 6:35SPEAKER_06: And here's the thing omnipresence doesn't mean you're the best.
- 6:40SPEAKER_06: You want to be the best.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 6:43SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 6:43SPEAKER_06: But omnipresence, right.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: I'm glad you clarified that.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: I like that.
- 6:48SPEAKER_06: Omnipresence does not mean you're the best.
- 6:49SPEAKER_06: It means you're out there, you're everywhere, and you're you're we're there when they need you.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: I can't even believe I am so upset that I'm just not remembering.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: But see how I forget things?
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: But and I'll tell you who it was when we get back.
- 7:01SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 7:01SPEAKER_06: So no, but the thing, and because this is one thing I have learned from Grant Cardone over the many years that I've been following him and being taught by him and talking with Grant Cardone in person or via Zoom, like I did earlier this week, is that you're gonna have haters.
- 7:14SPEAKER_06: People are gonna hate.
- 7:15SPEAKER_06: Oh, look what he's doing.
- 7:16SPEAKER_06: Oh my gosh, can you believe that?
- 7:18SPEAKER_06: It's not flaunting, it's being everywhere for everyone at once.
- 7:21SPEAKER_06: That's the whole thing, right?
- 7:22SPEAKER_06: They're called haters, right?
- 7:23SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 7:24SPEAKER_06: So with that, I've got haters.
- 7:26SPEAKER_06: I get it.
- 7:26SPEAKER_06: You've got haters.
- 7:27SPEAKER_06: I hate that you have haters, but I'm sure you're gonna be able to do it.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: Hate is gonna hate.
- 7:31SPEAKER_06: Oh boy, we're dropping in song now.
- 7:33SPEAKER_06: But no, I came up with this, and it's literally it's haters be hating.
- 7:37SPEAKER_06: I'm leaving them in the shadows of my success.
- 7:40SPEAKER_06: I mean, that is strong.
- 7:42SPEAKER_06: It's a good thing.
- 7:42SPEAKER_06: I'm leaving them in the shadows of my success, right?
- 7:46SPEAKER_06: Because success is my duty, not my success, everyone else's.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: And guys, everyone else I succeed.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: That was his quote from his own brain.
- 7:57SPEAKER_06: Right there.
- 7:57SPEAKER_06: Brain.
- 7:58SPEAKER_06: Right there.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: And it is true.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: Don't don't let them bring you down.
- 8:02SPEAKER_06: Nope.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: Because the sh the your shadow's already gonna do it.
- 8:06SPEAKER_06: Correct.
- 8:07SPEAKER_06: And that's the thing.
- 8:08SPEAKER_06: Grant Cardone does say this, and you're gonna get a lot of Grant today because I've been like super hyper on Grant Cardone uh here lately on some training and certification.
- 8:16SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 8:17SPEAKER_06: But you know, the thing that that Grant says is I totally lost my train of thought on that.
- 8:22SPEAKER_06: Why did I lose my train of thought on that, Caitlin?
- 8:24SPEAKER_06: What Grant says.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: Why are you acting like me?
- 8:27SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 8:28SPEAKER_06: Oh my gosh, this had a Caitlin moment.
- 8:29SPEAKER_06: Oh my god, it's got a brain party.
- 8:31SPEAKER_06: Okay, hold on.
- 8:32SPEAKER_05: Oh, I know, I know I got it, I got it.
- 8:33SPEAKER_05: No, I got it.
- 8:34SPEAKER_06: About the haters and all that stuff, right?
- 8:35SPEAKER_06: Yes, yes, yes.
- 8:36SPEAKER_06: The shadows of my success.
- 8:36SPEAKER_06: It's right.
- 8:37SPEAKER_06: You're not out there to compete.
- 8:39SPEAKER_06: You're out there to dominate.
- 8:40SPEAKER_06: You're not competing with competitors.
- 8:42SPEAKER_06: You're out there to dominate your your space.
- 8:46SPEAKER_06: Don't compete.
- 8:46SPEAKER_06: If you compete, you're gonna be on their level.
- 8:48SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 8:48SPEAKER_06: You're gonna dominate.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: Just do the best you can for what you know what to do and not worry about everybody else.
- 8:56SPEAKER_06: And you know what's you know what's exciting?
- 8:57SPEAKER_06: I am on one.
- 8:58SPEAKER_06: You've got me on one now.
- 8:59SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm so glad.
- 8:59SPEAKER_06: But one thing about when you're out there dominating your industry, your space, you're actually helping your competitors.
- 9:06SPEAKER_06: They don't realize it because the tide, the rising tide raises all boats.
- 9:11SPEAKER_06: So as I am dominating my space, I am bringing more focus to the that industry and that trade.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: That means that is very true.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: Look at every car dealership.
- 9:24SPEAKER_06: Right, exactly.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: And they're always trying.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: And then that in turn helps our economy.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: So dominating 10Xing, it's just good for everything.
- 9:32SPEAKER_06: Feeds the soul.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 9:34SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 9:34SPEAKER_06: Hey, back into the 10 things that contractors notice in the first 60 seconds of walking into your home, right?
- 9:41SPEAKER_06: First one, age and condition of windows.
- 9:43SPEAKER_06: Right, everyone's got every every home has windows, right?
- 9:47SPEAKER_06: New, old, purple, pink.
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: And those are the things that can cause an array of other problems.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: So I would feel like, yes, obviously.
- 9:55SPEAKER_06: You know, the windows, usually you can tell pretty quickly if they're original to the home, right?
- 10:01SPEAKER_06: A builder grade window, which means it would be like an off-the-shelf, low-end entry-level window.
- 10:07SPEAKER_06: I think that's what I have.
- 10:11SPEAKER_06: Or flip houses definitely have them.
- 10:13SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:13SPEAKER_06: Uh replacement windows, if it's been replaced from the original, or nearing the end of their life windows, right?
- 10:19SPEAKER_06: We can see that.
- 10:20SPEAKER_06: Uh a lot of those things that we notice in that is like condensation between the panes.
- 10:24SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 10:24SPEAKER_06: You know, a lot of people say, you know, can you go up and wipe that?
- 10:27SPEAKER_06: You know, Josh was talking about last week's episode.
- 10:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 10:29SPEAKER_06: Can you wipe the condensation off?
- 10:30SPEAKER_06: Oh, nope, it's between the glass.
- 10:32SPEAKER_06: It means you have seal failure in that insulated glass.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: That's the worst.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: I don't have that, but that I've seen it before.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: Log glass is like you're cleaning the window.
- 10:40SPEAKER_06: Why don't they clean their windows?
- 10:41SPEAKER_06: Well, they can't because it's between the glass.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:43SPEAKER_06: So, or drafts, drafts around the windows.
- 10:46SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, I like going to homes on windy days.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: Because that's when you can hear the whistle.
- 10:51SPEAKER_06: You can hear the whistle, get the flame out.
- 10:53SPEAKER_06: You can feel the drafts or whatever.
- 10:54SPEAKER_06: Yeah, get the flame out.
- 10:55SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 10:56SPEAKER_06: Feel the whisper of the air under the sink, right?
- 10:59SPEAKER_06: Damaged seals, worn hardware.
- 11:02SPEAKER_06: Does the window go up and then you let go, it drops?
- 11:04SPEAKER_06: It's worn hardware, worn, worn lifts, stuff like that.
- 11:08SPEAKER_06: Soft or rotten wood around the frames, right?
- 11:11SPEAKER_06: A lot of your Anderson windows and your pillow windows uh that have the wood, wood, solid wood, and just have the aluminum clad on the outside.
- 11:20SPEAKER_06: What happens is people still don't realize that that aluminum clad is protecting the wood, but they expand and contract at different rates.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: Just like we talked about in the previous.
- 11:29SPEAKER_06: And what happens is moisture gets in there.
- 11:31SPEAKER_06: When moisture gets into a spot in the wood, wood is porous.
- 11:35SPEAKER_06: All wood windows that are made from those two companies I mentioned, I won't mention them again because I coughed when I did.
- 11:42SPEAKER_06: That that wood is a softer wood, which means it's porous, which means it will absorb moisture if moisture is allowed to absorb into it, and then it will rot.
- 11:50SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 11:50SPEAKER_06: So that is one of the things.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: What kind of windows do you feel that they should focus on?
- 11:55SPEAKER_06: Well, I don't want to be biased and say, so there are a lot of manufacturers out there, a lot of people selling uh 100% virgin vinyl.
- 12:02SPEAKER_06: Virgin vinyl, not regrind.
- 12:04SPEAKER_06: Regrind vinyl, which means they take the recycling vinyl, right?
- 12:08SPEAKER_06: They add calcium to that to make it extrude and go further.
- 12:11SPEAKER_06: And when that happens, it gets chalky and brittle.
- 12:14SPEAKER_06: Holmes, you walk up to the windows and you can wipe your hand on the white vinyl window and you come off white and chalky.
- 12:18SPEAKER_06: That's calcium.
- 12:20SPEAKER_06: And that window becomes brittle.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:22SPEAKER_06: So the virgin vinyl.
- 12:24SPEAKER_06: Virgin vinyl thermally broke.
- 12:26SPEAKER_06: So you're thermally breaking from outside to inside.
- 12:28SPEAKER_06: Um, so you're not conducting the heat and cold back and forth between the home and outside, right?
- 12:33SPEAKER_06: That's what you want to have.
- 12:34SPEAKER_06: But you can still have, like we have, still wood interior windows.
- 12:38SPEAKER_06: So you can have wood on the inside, but it's protected all the way through with vinyl, all the way to the outside, protected and thermal break.
- 12:44SPEAKER_06: Yep, exactly.
- 12:45SPEAKER_06: So, you know, windows are one of those parts of the home that homeowners sometimes get used to, uh, but contractors spot right away.
- 12:51SPEAKER_06: But moving on to number dos, and I'll I'll get capped on my Spanish, so at a certain number.
- 12:57SPEAKER_06: So we'll I don't know if I'll stop here or now, but you know what?
- 13:01SPEAKER_06: So again, I just want to state as we get into these, this is not judgment.
- 13:04SPEAKER_06: We're not judging someone's home.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: We're obviously just observing on potential things that like here's a way for you guys to think about it.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: When you go to the doctor to get checked out, I mean, obviously some things are you know wrong with you, and they're gonna diagnose it.
- 13:20SPEAKER_06: And you know what?
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: Just like a contractor does not have a lot of things.
- 13:22SPEAKER_06: Good analogy, because someone can walk into a doctor and the doctor can say, Oh, how long have you had the limp?
- 13:30SPEAKER_06: Well, I don't have a limp because that person's had the limp so long they've gotten used to it.
- 13:35SPEAKER_06: That's their way of doing it.
- 13:36SPEAKER_06: But someone, a doctor in the professional, same thing.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: Or maybe like a lump or something.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 13:40SPEAKER_06: A lump.
- 13:40SPEAKER_06: I think I would notice I had a lump.
- 13:42SPEAKER_06: My lump, my lump, my lady lovely lump.
- 13:44SPEAKER_06: What?
- 13:45SPEAKER_06: No, all right.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: That was my cheer song in high school.
- 13:47SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 13:48SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 13:48SPEAKER_06: Anyway, but I that's what I'm saying.
- 13:50SPEAKER_06: We are not judging about when we start the next one, is the overall maintenance level of someone's home.
- 13:55SPEAKER_06: Within seconds, you can tell how how well the home is maintained.
- 13:59SPEAKER_06: Are they cleaning off the outside of the home yearly?
- 14:02SPEAKER_06: Is there leaves built up in the corners and stuff?
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: The gutters.
- 14:06SPEAKER_06: Trim condition, paint quality, door alignments, clean mechanical areas.
- 14:11SPEAKER_06: If people just were like have a bunch of stuff piled around their furnace, that furnace isn't able to function at its proper capacity that it's supposed to, right?
- 14:19SPEAKER_06: Because it has to breathe.
- 14:21SPEAKER_06: And if you need to get to it.
- 14:23SPEAKER_06: I mean, I've been into homes, not mentioning names or areas, stuff like that, but I've been into homes where they're like, yeah, we're having some furnace issues.
- 14:29SPEAKER_06: Well, can we see it?
- 14:31SPEAKER_06: Well, yeah, it's in here.
- 14:32SPEAKER_06: I'm like, where?
- 14:33SPEAKER_06: I mean, it's buried.
- 14:35SPEAKER_06: It's buried in stuff.
- 14:36SPEAKER_06: It's like that furnace, and it's a gas furnace.
- 14:38SPEAKER_06: That thing's gotta breathe.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: So how how like far away should be a few.
- 14:42SPEAKER_06: Well, I mean, you should at least get at least a good six inches to a foot around from the front.
- 14:47SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 14:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you're like freaking out.
- 14:48SPEAKER_06: I gotta go home.
- 14:49SPEAKER_06: I'll be back.
- 14:50SPEAKER_06: I gotta go.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: My god, there's gonna be a fire.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: My dog.
- 14:53SPEAKER_06: No, my dog's a damn dog.
- 14:54unknown: Okay.
- 14:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 14:57SPEAKER_06: But you know what?
- 14:59SPEAKER_06: Here's the truth.
- 15:00SPEAKER_06: Homes that are well maintained on the small stuff usually have fewer, bigger problems, right?
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 15:05SPEAKER_06: And and this isn't a can how you maintain your home, like cleaning it weekly or daily or whatever your OCDness is, right?
- 15:12SPEAKER_03: Or it's like if if something a a small thing needs fixed is basically what you're saying.
- 15:17SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 15:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 15:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 15:18SPEAKER_06: You know, because maintenance tells a story.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:20SPEAKER_06: It tells a story of, oh, yeah, well, we've been noticing, you know, water dripping in that room forever.
- 15:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah, now that's why you're gonna fall through the floor, right?
- 15:29SPEAKER_06: So and and speaking of falling through the floor, yeah, my face, yeah.
- 15:33SPEAKER_06: But you know, you're gonna fall through the floor, and then that'll segue right into the third thing, which or the tray thing, which is the floors.
- 15:40SPEAKER_06: I do it, but most contractors always look down because the floors tell you a lot.
- 15:46SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 15:46SPEAKER_06: Are they sloping?
- 15:47SPEAKER_06: Do they squeak?
- 15:48SPEAKER_06: Uh, uneven transitions, yeah, sagging areas, yeah.
- 15:52SPEAKER_06: They'll sway back in the floor, or the middle of the room is, you know, um, or is it like a trampoline?
- 15:59SPEAKER_06: You know, this is a few.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: I think that's so important.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: I'm glad that they they really look for this stuff, especially the floors.
- 16:05SPEAKER_03: That is you just said fall through the floor.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: Terrifying.
- 16:08SPEAKER_06: I'm not trying to scare people.
- 16:10SPEAKER_06: That's fear is not our our motive today, right?
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: But could you imagine?
- 16:13SPEAKER_06: But but but that's normal, you know, settling sometimes on certain things, and it tells us, you know, that something structural might be going on.
- 16:22SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 16:22SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 16:22SPEAKER_06: Most homeowners don't even notice those things because they've lived with it every day.
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: And they just think it's a normal.
- 16:28SPEAKER_06: I literally was with a client that it was in a commercial business that was concrete floor, right?
- 16:35SPEAKER_06: Had a finished floor over it, but I literally could tell that I dropped about two inches when I went to a corner of the building.
- 16:43SPEAKER_06: And when I pointed it out to the client, slanting, yeah, the whole corner of the building had sagged over the years and they didn't know it because they're in it every day.
- 16:52SPEAKER_06: And when I pointed it out to them, they're like, I guess I can't, because I said, walk this way, and they walked.
- 16:58SPEAKER_06: Put like a marble.
- 16:59SPEAKER_06: I said, Oh, marble went, you know, straight down.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:02SPEAKER_06: So, but you know, floors, floors are exactly.
- 17:06SPEAKER_06: But in that case, it would be something that we'd want to monitor on the outside of the building or inside.
- 17:11SPEAKER_06: Are there some diagonal cracks that are happening on this on this building?
- 17:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 17:15SPEAKER_06: Are they growing?
- 17:16SPEAKER_06: Or they've done their what we call the that initial just it just it's like the constant, like boom, it just happened, right?
- 17:26SPEAKER_06: And when that happens, after a period of time, it's like something's holding on, holding on, holding on, and then it's like, okay, I've given up like like if the ground settles under it, yeah, and then it just finally is like that moment reaction is like boom.
- 17:38SPEAKER_06: And now it's done.
- 17:39SPEAKER_06: It's done moving, right?
- 17:40SPEAKER_06: Because now it's at its new low, it's down, it's staying.
- 17:42SPEAKER_06: That's called a moment reaction point.
- 17:44SPEAKER_06: It's done, not moving anymore.
- 17:45SPEAKER_06: It came out.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: It's so weird to me to think that it actually moves like that quick because you almost think it's like almost like the blooming of a flower.
- 17:55SPEAKER_06: Well, you know what sometimes it can bloom.
- 17:57SPEAKER_06: Sometimes they can bloom overnight.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 17:59SPEAKER_06: And next morning it's like poop, eat me.
- 18:02SPEAKER_06: Like Caitlin would say it's her botox.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, I need it so bad.
- 18:05SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 18:06SPEAKER_06: So it is like, yeah, yeah, look at me.
- 18:09SPEAKER_06: But no, so you do have moment reaction things, right?
- 18:12SPEAKER_06: Where concrete over time, boom, it settles underneath and drops.
- 18:16SPEAKER_06: But you do have wood over time that's had weight on it and moisture that it will start sagging and start sagging over time.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:26SPEAKER_06: Over time.
- 18:27SPEAKER_06: But what happens is once it gets to a point it can't sag anymore, you'll have a moment reaction where it will fail.
- 18:34SPEAKER_06: And that's where people need to, and as contractors, we look at the You gotta check.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: And and a lot of it's safety reasons.
- 18:40SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it is.
- 18:40SPEAKER_06: We so we and I'm not gonna say businesses or anything like that, but we just got done uh a building that's been around for 150 plus years, right?
- 18:48SPEAKER_06: It's been around a long time.
- 18:50SPEAKER_06: And the floor system was spanning 20 feet.
- 18:53SPEAKER_06: Old growth lumber is stronger than current lumber being built.
- 18:57SPEAKER_06: We talked about that, right?
- 18:59SPEAKER_06: But they had a heavy load right in the middle of that floor for decades.
- 19:05SPEAKER_06: And what happened was that old and moisture, and they added floor upon floor upon floor as opposed to removing floors.
- 19:11SPEAKER_06: And so with moisture, with weight, literally it started to sag, and then other things started to fail in there and not work properly.
- 19:19SPEAKER_06: So we came in to the basement of this building and we cut, excavated, and poured pier pads right down the middle.
- 19:29SPEAKER_06: We came in and put in a multi-piece LVL laminated veneer lumber beam, and we brought that floor back up.
- 19:38SPEAKER_06: Where now the things are proper.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: And it's not sagging, it's safe.
- 19:42SPEAKER_06: Correct.
- 19:42SPEAKER_06: The safe's not gonna fail, and it's not gonna continue to sag and get worse over time.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: And you know, it's like I don't, for some reason, when things get like belt on top of each other, or even just paint, like I just I don't like that.
- 19:54SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 19:54SPEAKER_06: Well, and that's the thing.
- 19:55SPEAKER_06: So if you're putting a floor, and we wouldn't have known this over them, but you can get rid of a sag in a floor by just putting self-leveling what we call floor level in there.
- 20:04SPEAKER_06: So that's just pouring a self-leveling, almost like cementous epoxy-like material in there that will find its own level.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 20:13SPEAKER_06: Now what we just did was added more weight to this floor without taking care of the problem.
- 20:18SPEAKER_06: The problem, see.
- 20:19SPEAKER_06: But the finished product looks nice and flat.
- 20:20SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: They're putting band-aids over it.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 20:23SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 20:23SPEAKER_06: And eventually that's going to fail.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the band-aid will fail.
- 20:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 20:27SPEAKER_06: So, but what you can't see all this without lighting, right?
- 20:31SPEAKER_06: Which is our number four quattro.
- 20:35unknown: Right.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: Now that one surprise Yes, that is very good.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: That one surprises me, Chris.
- 20:40SPEAKER_06: Well, but many.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: I would think that's more like cosmetic.
- 20:45SPEAKER_06: Well, it's not, but homes that were built in the 80s, 90s simply don't have enough lighting, right?
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: Uh you know what?
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: Yes, and I hate that.
- 20:53SPEAKER_06: And we'll we'll we'll notice outdated fixtures or dark corners, poor task lighting in kitchen or lack of task lighting at all, mismatched lighting styles, which again, here's the thing is we learned from Tamar Day.
- 21:06SPEAKER_06: If it works for you and you like it, that's the same thing.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: I'm still going back.
- 21:10SPEAKER_03: I'm still going back to that.
- 21:11SPEAKER_06: Right?
- 21:11SPEAKER_06: And which we can.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: But I love those recessed lights.
- 21:14SPEAKER_06: But if you're coming in, and and that's the thing with the recessed lights, we can put them in anywhere now.
- 21:19SPEAKER_06: Now that they have the the wafer lights.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: Or that's I'm sorry.
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the flat ones.
- 21:23SPEAKER_06: Recessed, but it gives the appearance of can lights, which the old up in the attic can you know, it's a can in the attic, right?
- 21:30SPEAKER_06: The wafer lights can be put anywhere.
- 21:32SPEAKER_06: So that's the thing.
- 21:32SPEAKER_06: So you got dark corners or task lighting, and that's a lot of things when we're designing kitchens and we're people are wondering, well, I don't want hang down lights.
- 21:40SPEAKER_06: I want, I want can lights, I want recessed lights, right?
- 21:43SPEAKER_06: So a lot of people put them in.
- 21:44SPEAKER_06: They're like, Well, I want it here, here, and here.
- 21:46SPEAKER_06: It was like, okay, well, if you step and stand at your counter, that light's behind you is not going to cast a shadow over you.
- 21:52SPEAKER_06: So we need to put that light above you so that it's straight down to illuminate your work area.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: When you're cooking.
- 21:58SPEAKER_06: And we take those things into this right.
- 21:59SPEAKER_06: You're cooking.
- 22:00SPEAKER_06: Or you're mixing up something, or you're cutting, or cutting board, you want some light, right?
- 22:03SPEAKER_06: See, that is that's not a carrot, that was my finger.
- 22:06SPEAKER_06: You know, sorry, I had to go there.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: Because I love when your little joke says you don't know they're coming.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: You never know they're coming.
- 22:14SPEAKER_06: That's what she said.
- 22:15SPEAKER_06: So, but good lighting can completely transform a home, right?
- 22:20SPEAKER_06: Just straight up transform a home.
- 22:22SPEAKER_06: And see how we just move right on to that, right?
- 22:24SPEAKER_06: So number five, right?
- 22:27SPEAKER_06: I'll let you continue this thing.
- 22:29SPEAKER_06: Number five.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: Um no, no, it's Cinco.
- 22:32SPEAKER_06: Cinco, Cinco de Mayo, right?
- 22:34SPEAKER_06: Is trim and finish work.
- 22:36SPEAKER_06: Good contractors will notice finished details.
- 22:39SPEAKER_06: Things like trim gaps, uneven baseboards, caulking lines, door casings, which can have issues on door casings if something is settled, like we talked about earlier, door alignments.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: Probably look at the court around at the bottom.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: I know a lot of times I've noticed a space in between the floor, especially at my house.
- 22:58SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 22:58SPEAKER_06: And that which could be settling andor not put down properly and stuff like that.
- 23:02SPEAKER_06: And again, settling.
- 23:03SPEAKER_06: It's not because we're judging, but because it tells how previous work was done.
- 23:08SPEAKER_06: You can learn a lot about a house.
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: If it had been settling, like you just said.
- 23:11SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 23:12SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 23:12SPEAKER_06: You can tell a lot about home, about its finished carpentry.
- 23:15SPEAKER_06: And so that's the thing.
- 23:15SPEAKER_06: Finished carpenter, there's rough carpentry and and finished carpentry, and there's a lot of things that finished carpentry, um, it takes a different carpenter to do that.
- 23:24SPEAKER_06: If you're cutting a two by four to put in a wall to frame up a wall, if it's uh you know, a little bit off on the cut, it's still going to go in and frame that wall and be fine.
- 23:33SPEAKER_06: But if you're off a little bit on a trim piece, that's like the icing on a cake.
- 23:36SPEAKER_06: Everyone sees it.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 23:38SPEAKER_06: Like in in our studio here right now.
- 23:40SPEAKER_06: You just studs behind the wall.
- 23:41SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 23:42SPEAKER_06: But you see the trim.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because it's and and trim is a very big thing that people use for pretty much everybody.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: Great decoration.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: You know, it makes or breaks it.
- 23:50SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 23:51SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: That's a good point.
- 23:52SPEAKER_03: Go ahead.
- 23:52SPEAKER_06: So moving on to number six, right?
- 23:55SPEAKER_06: Number six is signs of six.
- 23:58SPEAKER_06: See, go six.
- 23:59SPEAKER_06: Six, not sex, six.
- 24:01SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 24:01SPEAKER_06: So signs of moisture.
- 24:03SPEAKER_06: Not trying to embarrass anyone.
- 24:05SPEAKER_06: This is important.
- 24:06SPEAKER_06: We immediately look for signs of water issues, right?
- 24:09SPEAKER_06: Or water infiltration, things like ceiling stains.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: So when the contractors come in, will they look like around the whole house for the moisture issues?
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: Like to me, I would only think in the bathroom, but I would here's the thing.
- 24:20SPEAKER_06: So this isn't this isn't us coming in.
- 24:22SPEAKER_06: And again, this is 60 seconds, right?
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: Sorry, sorry, sorry.
- 24:26SPEAKER_06: We're not coming in doing a home inspection.
- 24:28SPEAKER_06: That's not what we're there for.
- 24:28SPEAKER_06: We may be there to look at a bathroom model.
- 24:31SPEAKER_06: We may be looking at just new flooring or door, whatever it is, front door, right?
- 24:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:36SPEAKER_06: But it's it's just in this profession, and again, when you've been in thousands of homes, it's just stuff we pick up on.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: Right, real quick.
- 24:42SPEAKER_06: It's like a it's like a uh a seamstress noticing someone's hem on their dress or a hem on a pants like, ooh, that's crooked or a chiropractor noticing my neck.
- 24:51SPEAKER_06: Walking around like, you know, whatever.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: That's that's what it is.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: And I think sometimes people don't think of it that way because it's their home and they'll think, but that's you're exactly right.
- 25:02SPEAKER_06: So and and so here's the thing too, back to the Grant Cardone thing, the 10x thing, the 10x mindset and building your business.
- 25:08SPEAKER_06: So how it's approached when we notice these things walking into someone's home, it's not to again upsell.
- 25:16SPEAKER_06: It's kind of a dual thing.
- 25:18SPEAKER_06: It's like, hey, we're professional, we notice these things.
- 25:21SPEAKER_06: Hey, have you ever noticed you have a stain on the ceiling?
- 25:23SPEAKER_06: Is that old?
- 25:23SPEAKER_06: Do you have a roof leak?
- 25:24SPEAKER_06: We're not here to look at your roof, but you know, just our concern is do you have an issue going on?
- 25:29SPEAKER_06: Or, oh, you notice you got a second story in the house and you have a stain.
- 25:31SPEAKER_06: Is there a toilet or a bathroom up there?
- 25:33SPEAKER_06: Is there a plumbing leak?
- 25:34SPEAKER_06: Well, you know, I've never noticed that stain.
- 25:36SPEAKER_06: And so it may shift the priority in their home.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: And I don't feel like that's upselling, guys.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: Like I don't want you guys to be able to do it.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: It's looking out for our client.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I would feel like upselling is like say you have beautiful signing already on your house and they're like, hey, you need new sighting.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: You know, like you can see.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: So that's a difference.
- 25:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah, there's difference between shading.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: Like this is safety related.
- 25:56SPEAKER_06: Andor acknowledging or educating the clients.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: Like, hey, do you know you have a water stain up there?
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: They might not know.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: They might not know.
- 26:03SPEAKER_06: No, I don't.
- 26:04SPEAKER_06: Or, yeah, but we we painted over that, you know, five years ago and it's just coming through.
- 26:09SPEAKER_06: Oh, did you know if you put a stain blocker paint on that first stain blocker primer, like a KILLS or a Zinzer on there, that it would keep that from coming through?
- 26:18SPEAKER_06: I didn't know that.
- 26:19SPEAKER_06: Thank you.
- 26:19SPEAKER_06: Where can I get that?
- 26:20SPEAKER_06: Well, you can get your local ace, plump, wherever you get your bad either.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: See, learn something new on top.
- 26:25SPEAKER_06: So so those types, that's why we bring these things up.
- 26:27SPEAKER_06: But also, you know, moisture could be in warped trim on the exterior of a wall or something, or musty smells.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: We know.
- 26:34SPEAKER_06: Window condensation we already talked about, which could be on the inside of the window in this case, your moisture issues.
- 26:39SPEAKER_06: The home is really humid, it's condensating at the windows or soft flooring your bathrooms, really around toilets, right?
- 26:48SPEAKER_06: A lot of people stand in front of the toilet, no issues.
- 26:50SPEAKER_06: Oh, my floor is firm.
- 26:52SPEAKER_06: Put your foot to the side of the toilet back where the actual wax ring is, and the in the that's where if you have a wax, uh wax ring failure or leak, your floor is soft.
- 27:01SPEAKER_06: I've almost put my foot through I don't know how many countless floors around your toilets.
- 27:04SPEAKER_06: And what people don't realize they sit their butts down there.
- 27:07SPEAKER_06: One day they're gonna sit down and they're gonna go, whoop, I'm in a recliner.
- 27:10SPEAKER_03: I would die.
- 27:12SPEAKER_06: There's Caitlin, legs in the air.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: I would absolutely get danger, danger.
- 27:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah, anyway.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: Now I have to go check as soon as I get it.
- 27:21SPEAKER_06: Oh my gosh.
- 27:23SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 27:23SPEAKER_06: I do have tile though, so maybe it that makes it worse because then it's a false sense of security that, oh, my tile's solid.
- 27:30SPEAKER_06: Again, it's kind of like the concrete floor dropping.
- 27:33SPEAKER_06: The wood underneath is rotted and gone.
- 27:35SPEAKER_06: And eventually you're relying on the cementous board or the substrate under that tile holding, but eventually that tile is gonna be like, Fuck you, I'm done.
- 27:44SPEAKER_04: So you're in a recliner.
- 27:46SPEAKER_06: Next thing you know, you're in a damn recliner, right?
- 27:49SPEAKER_06: But water snort time's coming out.
- 27:52SPEAKER_06: Workiness is coming out.
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: It's perfect timing.
- 27:54SPEAKER_06: Water is one of the biggest enemies of the home, so contractors are always scanning for it.
- 27:57SPEAKER_06: But hey, I want to give a quick little story.
- 28:01SPEAKER_06: So literally a few years ago, we walked into a home and to give a quote on replacing some windows.
- 28:07SPEAKER_06: And that was the project we were there for, right?
- 28:09SPEAKER_06: But within about the first minute, stepping inside the house, I noticed something else.
- 28:13SPEAKER_06: The flooring near the back wall felt a little soft when I stepped on it.
- 28:16SPEAKER_06: Not nothing dramatic, right?
- 28:18SPEAKER_06: Just a little give.
- 28:19SPEAKER_06: So I asked the homeowner if they had ever had any moisture issues, you know, around that wall.
- 28:23SPEAKER_06: And they said, no, not that they knew of, right?
- 28:25SPEAKER_06: But a long story short, when we started digging into the project, we found that water had been slowly getting in around the old window, flashing for years.
- 28:33SPEAKER_06: Nothing catastrophic yet, but it had already started affecting the subfloor at that exterior wall.
- 28:40SPEAKER_06: And the good news is we caught it early enough.
- 28:42SPEAKER_06: And it's a great example of how sometimes a contractor isn't looking, you know, at the project you called them for.
- 28:48SPEAKER_06: We're also looking at overall health of the home.
- 28:50SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 28:50SPEAKER_06: And that's where the key, the health of the home.
- 28:52SPEAKER_06: And so it does.
- 28:54SPEAKER_06: We're there to help and and make sure it's safe for everybody.
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: But also, it could potentially save the homeowner money.
- 29:00SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: If if you start doing something and then you guys can't do it right because of this problem that was not discovered, then that's what so I think coming in the first time and being honest and telling them just what you see.
- 29:16SPEAKER_06: And again, we're there for windows.
- 29:17SPEAKER_06: So in that case, they had a window that had been failing for a long time.
- 29:19SPEAKER_06: They didn't know it because it was leaking in through the sill flashing and going down in the wall and hitting the subfloor under the over and over and over and didn't know it.
- 29:31SPEAKER_06: And what happens with those subfloors?
- 29:33SPEAKER_06: It's again, it's wood and it just rots and gets soft.
- 29:36SPEAKER_06: Like I'm gonna give out here soon.
- 29:39SPEAKER_06: Somebody help me.
- 29:40SPEAKER_06: Hey, the big dog's here.
- 29:41SPEAKER_06: Yay! Little wood floor going, yay, big dog.
- 29:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, big dog, big dog.
- 29:48SPEAKER_06: All right, well, hey, other things.
- 29:49SPEAKER_06: Number seven, we're on to my little stories away.
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: Number seven, siete.
- 29:53SPEAKER_06: Oh, see, I'm glad you're here for that because I stopped at cinco, but you had to mail me out on it.
- 29:59SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 30:00SPEAKER_06: I I could, you know, uno dos tres, cuatro cinco siete.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: Says.
- 30:04SPEAKER_06: Says, sex.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: Close enough.
- 30:06SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 30:07SPEAKER_06: So number seven is previous DIY projects.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: Oh boy.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Oh boy, yep.
- 30:13SPEAKER_06: These could be fun, right?
- 30:15SPEAKER_06: They can be really interesting.
- 30:17SPEAKER_06: Contractors can usually spot DIY projects pretty quickly.
- 30:21SPEAKER_06: Again, not judging by any means.
- 30:23SPEAKER_06: There's some that are great, and there's some that that's why we're there.
- 30:27SPEAKER_06: Because a DI project went wrong, or they bought a house that had DIY projects from a previous owner and now they are failing.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: Yes, that happened to me 100.
- 30:36SPEAKER_06: But you know, some of those sinks could be outlets.
- 30:38SPEAKER_06: Outlets are slightly crooked, trim that doesn't quite meet tile spacing issues.
- 30:44SPEAKER_06: Well, if you just turn your head sideways and walk past it, it's straight.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: Oh, it just really upsets me.
- 30:49SPEAKER_06: You know, or the creative solutions that DIYers come up with.
- 30:53SPEAKER_06: Um, and listen, there's nothing wrong with DIY when it's done right.
- 30:57SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 30:57SPEAKER_06: We support some projects really benefit from the professional installation.
- 31:01SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 31:01SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 31:02SPEAKER_06: So that's all I'm gonna say about DIY projects, but that's one of the things we notice.
- 31:06SPEAKER_06: Because again, one of the top 10 things we noticed are the first 60 seconds walking into a home, right?
- 31:10SPEAKER_06: And some of the DIY projects can be on the outside of the home that we notice, right?
- 31:14SPEAKER_06: So number eight.
- 31:16SPEAKER_06: No judgment.
- 31:17SPEAKER_06: Oh, oh, chill.
- 31:19SPEAKER_06: Oh, chill.
- 31:21SPEAKER_06: Listen at her, oh, chill and popping off the top of the head.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: I didn't have to do it this time.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: That's why I was like, yeah.
- 31:28SPEAKER_06: So the age of mechanical systems.
- 31:30SPEAKER_06: Uh, we also tend to notice the age of the big systems, your HVAC systems, uh, water heaters, electrical panels, right?
- 31:36SPEAKER_06: Those are kind of your big threes of the home, the mechanical things that keep like the heartbeat of the home, keep you warm, keep you.
- 31:43SPEAKER_06: Well, you know what?
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: I had lights on my HVAC people um come, Danny, and he had to fix like there was something in my air conditioner.
- 31:54SPEAKER_06: A critter?
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: It was so sad, Chris.
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: It was a chipmunk.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: But anyway, he oh, it was awful.
- 32:02SPEAKER_06: And and but he noticed Go back to previous episodes, and you'll hear her talking about the chipmunk and the thing.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: Oh, it was awful.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: He noticed that I needed a new That.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: You know, where you thermostat.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: Thermostat.
- 32:13SPEAKER_06: Because it was doing this, it's the it's a rectangle.
- 32:17SPEAKER_06: Or you can do it from your phone now here at our smart home.
- 32:19SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: But he knew because this was I mean, I what would I think?
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: I I would have no idea.
- 32:25SPEAKER_06: But no one knows what you think, Caitlin.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: Right, you know, yeah.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: Well, I wouldn't ever think about a thermostat on the other.
- 32:30SPEAKER_06: Sorry, Chris.
- 32:31SPEAKER_06: I'm sorry.
- 32:31SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, Chris's.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: But that's case in point.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: He wasn't trying to, he was like, hey, you need a new one of these because it's not working.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: Just like you and we're saying everything else.
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: The mechanical.
- 32:43SPEAKER_06: Let me interject on this real quick, just to kind of prove our point.
- 32:46SPEAKER_06: If you feel like someone is trying to shadily say, oh, you got to replace this, and oh, you got to replace that now, say, oh, hey, great.
- 32:55SPEAKER_06: Thanks for that.
- 32:55SPEAKER_06: Give me a cost on that and get a second opinion.
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: If you're feeling that if you're feeling that.
- 33:00SPEAKER_06: But if you feel like that this person is genuine and you trust them and you've had work done for them in the past, great.
- 33:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, they're there protecting you, right?
- 33:08SPEAKER_06: But if someone says, no, ma'am, you need all four new tires just because you came in with one flat.
- 33:13SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 33:14SPEAKER_06: I love the voice.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: And I I don't think there's ever any harm in getting a second opinion.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: Like we've talked about it.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: Do your research.
- 33:21SPEAKER_06: But, but I will give you this if you feel comfortable and confident in what the person is telling you in your home, you believe in the product and the solution that they're bringing you, and the price fits in your budget, there's no reason to get a second opinion.
- 33:36SPEAKER_06: There's no reason to get a second quote, there's no reason to get a third quote.
- 33:39SPEAKER_06: Again, I appreciate it.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: If you're not comfortable, obviously.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: Correct.
- 33:43SPEAKER_06: If you feel something's off, get a second opinion, right?
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: But if you're happy, why?
- 33:47SPEAKER_06: If you're happy, because again, we we talk about this all the time.
- 33:49SPEAKER_06: The goal is to give you the best quality for the best price, which is gonna be your best value.
- 33:55SPEAKER_06: And I'm gonna pull up a quick analogy, real quick, a little story, right?
- 33:59SPEAKER_06: So for those that can't see or that are just listening, best pen the the this pen, right?
- 34:04SPEAKER_06: Caitlin.
- 34:05SPEAKER_06: It's the best.
- 34:06SPEAKER_06: Would you buy this, would you buy this pen for me for$10,000?
- 34:10unknown: Hell no.
- 34:11SPEAKER_06: Why not?
- 34:13SPEAKER_06: Is that too expensive?
- 34:14unknown: Yes.
- 34:15SPEAKER_06: Okay, would you buy it for$9,999?
- 34:18unknown: No.
- 34:18SPEAKER_06: Why not?
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: Same price.
- 34:20SPEAKER_06: But you know what?
- 34:21SPEAKER_06: I guarantee that I could find someone that would buy this pen for$10,000.
- 34:25SPEAKER_06: Do you know why?
- 34:26SPEAKER_05: Why?
- 34:26SPEAKER_06: Because this pen could change the world.
- 34:28SPEAKER_06: This pen could sign a very important document.
- 34:31SPEAKER_06: This pen could sign a$100,000 contract that gets the money we need to do something.
- 34:35SPEAKER_06: This could be a very important pen.
- 34:37SPEAKER_06: Now, this pen could be worth$10,000 to someone because that value of that pen to them is worth it.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: I see where you're getting.
- 34:47SPEAKER_06: Got my point.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: Okay, but that very well could be made for the pen.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: And it could be.
- 35:00SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 35:00SPEAKER_06: Caitlin's in heaven with the fidget spinner on the top.
- 35:02SPEAKER_06: So hey, with your your aging mechanical systems, right?
- 35:06SPEAKER_06: Hey, even at a at a rough glance at looking at your big three, your H540s like Wales, you know, we can give a rough idea of the age and condition of the mechanicals.
- 35:16SPEAKER_06: And those systems do play a huge role in comfort and efficiency of your home.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: One thousandth.
- 35:22SPEAKER_06: And then it kind of segues right into number nine, which is Nueve.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say that's what they say to the dogs.
- 35:41unknown: Right.
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: That's a horrible feeling.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: Then you feel clammy.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: Is it drafty?
- 35:45SPEAKER_06: Is it stuffy?
- 35:46SPEAKER_06: Is it overly humid?
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: I feel like mine's really stuffy.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 35:51SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 35:51SPEAKER_06: Discomfort is something homeowners feel every day, but they assume it's just their normal.
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: They do.
- 35:56SPEAKER_06: There are people that like it that way, right?
- 35:58SPEAKER_06: They like, oh no, I'm an old fine.
- 36:00SPEAKER_06: I had it set the way I have any humidifier on my atract system to put moisture into my arm because I need to.
- 36:08SPEAKER_03: Or you just want your skin to be just so glowing.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: Yes, glow.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: I need it bad.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: That's all right.
- 36:18SPEAKER_06: Anyway, but hey, moving on to just the normal, right?
- 36:22SPEAKER_06: The other thing we notice is the homeowner's identity number 10, which is DS.
- 36:27SPEAKER_06: DS.
- 36:28SPEAKER_06: Number 10 is the homeowner's priorities.
- 36:31SPEAKER_06: So finally, something that has nothing to do with construction at all.
- 36:35SPEAKER_06: Within the first few minutes or 60 seconds we're talking about, we have to learn what matters most to the homeowner.
- 36:41SPEAKER_06: Of course.
- 36:42SPEAKER_06: People care about energy efficiency, appearance, return durability, resale value, right?
- 36:49SPEAKER_06: That helps us guide on our approach to the project that we're there for.
- 36:54SPEAKER_03: That's very true.
- 36:55SPEAKER_06: Good contractors just don't fix houses.
- 36:58SPEAKER_06: We help people improve the homes they live in in their daily lives.
- 37:02SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 37:02SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 37:03SPEAKER_06: That's the key to that.
- 37:05SPEAKER_06: So that's why we're there.
- 37:06SPEAKER_06: We're not again.
- 37:07SPEAKER_06: Like I said, no judgment.
- 37:09SPEAKER_03: We don't do that here, guys.
- 37:12SPEAKER_06: We don't do that because we're there as problem solvers bringing solutions to their homes.
- 37:18SPEAKER_06: That's that's the reason we're there.
- 37:19SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 37:20SPEAKER_06: If you call a contractor and that's not why they're there, call the next contractor.
- 37:24SPEAKER_06: Just say it.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:26SPEAKER_06: Because what we're trying to do here, big dog, is elevate your home.
- 37:30SPEAKER_06: Well, no, we're trying to elevate everyone that's in this trade in this industry.
- 37:34SPEAKER_06: Up your game, take care of your clients.
- 37:37SPEAKER_06: Don't be there just to get your paycheck.
- 37:40SPEAKER_06: That's the byproduct.
- 37:41SPEAKER_06: Be there to serve, not sell.
- 37:43SPEAKER_06: Take care of your clients' issues.
- 37:45SPEAKER_06: What are their problems?
- 37:46SPEAKER_06: Give them a solution.
- 37:48SPEAKER_06: Apply a price to that solution, and then the money comes.
- 37:51SPEAKER_06: That's what we're here for.
- 37:53SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 37:54SPEAKER_06: That's what we're here for at Big Dog Construction.
- 37:56SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 37:57SPEAKER_06: So if you're interested interested in learning more ways to make your home more comfortable, updated, and safer, feel free to reach out to Big Dog Construction and local Witovico, right?
- 38:05SPEAKER_06: At 217-970-7340.
- 38:08SPEAKER_06: Always have to take a breath in between that, just make sure I can talk about 7340.
- 38:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we don't want you to talk to our choken.
- 38:14SPEAKER_06: Because we do have multiple team members in the city.
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: Yes, you do.
- 38:17SPEAKER_06: And again, we're not all perfect.
- 38:19SPEAKER_06: Not every job's gonna be perfect.
- 38:20SPEAKER_06: We know that.
- 38:22SPEAKER_06: Uh we strive to be that way, but you know what, Chris?
- 38:25SPEAKER_03: It's damn near perfect.
- 38:29SPEAKER_03: He's being so humble.
- 38:30SPEAKER_06: Hey, but before we wrap up today, I've got a question for you.
- 38:35SPEAKER_06: If a contractor walked into your house right now, what do you think they would notice first?
- 38:41SPEAKER_06: Would it be your windows?
- 38:42SPEAKER_06: Your lighting?
- 38:43SPEAKER_06: Maybe that one DM project that didn't really go the way you wanted it to.
- 38:48SPEAKER_05: We'd love to hear about it.
- 38:50SPEAKER_05: We would love to hear about it.
- 38:52SPEAKER_05: Slip into our DMs.
- 38:53SPEAKER_06: And I'm not getting sexual there.
- 38:55SPEAKER_06: Just slip into our DMs.
- 38:56SPEAKER_06: It's not what you think it is out there in that dating world, right?
- 38:59SPEAKER_06: Flip into our DMs.
- 39:00SPEAKER_06: Like you know, when you get home today, walk in your role, what would be the first thing that a contractor spot?
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: Just yeah, 60 seconds.
- 39:08SPEAKER_06: Shoot us a a message on our reels on Facebook or drop it on our big dog page or shoot, but go to our big dog website, big dogcc.com.
- 39:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 39:20SPEAKER_06: I need to talk to you about taking care of it.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: I'm interested to hear what you guys have to say because I think everybody will have like different we'll put we'll put out a little video or graphic on our Yeah, and you guys place it on there because I do I am interested to hear.
- 39:35SPEAKER_06: So those are the 10 things contractors often notice in the first 60 seconds, even though it took us longer than 60 seconds to talk about them because Cable was talking about them.
- 39:44SPEAKER_03: But we had a lot of good info, a lot of good analogies.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:47SPEAKER_06: Hey, not because we're judging again.
- 39:49SPEAKER_06: I think I've said that once, maybe once, maybe twice, maybe those times, right?
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: Oh we we be in.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: We be in.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: Oh no, that's that's Italian and then Spanish.
- 40:02SPEAKER_06: Okay, just because after years in construction, um, our eyes naturally start getting detailed.
- 40:07SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 40:08SPEAKER_06: Honestly, busholds are like people, they all have their own personality and their own story.
- 40:14SPEAKER_03: Corky, quirky, quirky.
- 40:17SPEAKER_06: Catens quirkiness.
- 40:19SPEAKER_06: Okay, the goal isn't perfection, the goal is to create a home that's safe, comfortable, and built to last, right?
