- 0:00Hey everyone-welcome back to The Science of Leading.
- 0:02I'm Claire Monroe, and-of course-I'm here with the one and only Edwin
- 0:06Carrington.
- 0:07Edwin, how's it going?
- 0:07Doing well,
- 0:08Claire.
- 0:09Really good to be here.
- 0:10And I think today's topic is...
- 0:12yeah, right on time.
- 0:14Hiring in 2025?
- 0:16It's just-it's not what it used to be.
- 0:16Right?
- 0:18I mean, every company says stuff like,
- 0:20"People are our greatest asset," but then it's still...
- 0:23post a job, skim a few CVs, maybe do a couple calls-and just hope it
- 0:28works out.
- 0:28Why do you think that old way is still hanging on?
- 0:28Well,
- 0:32it's familiar.
- 0:32It's what leaders have always done.
- 0:34But let's be honest-this reactive,
- 0:37resume-first approach?
- 0:39It's expensive.
- 0:40And not just in obvious ways.
- 0:42When you rush to plug a gap, you're not just risking a bad hire-you're
- 0:47opening the door to low morale,
- 0:49lost productivity, and, yeah, real damage to the bottom line.
- 0:52I mean, the data shows a bad hire can cost up to five times their annual
- 0:57salary.
- 0:57That's not just payroll-that's retraining,
- 1:00turnover, missed opportunities,
- 1:01the whole ripple effect.
- 1:01Five times?!
- 1:04Oh wow...
- 1:05yeah, I didn't think it was that steep.
- 1:07And it's not just money, right?
- 1:08It's like-draining for the team,
- 1:10for the manager, for everyone.
- 1:10Exactly.
- 1:12I worked with a manufacturing firm-this was a few years back-they were
- 1:17hiring fast and off gut instinct.
- 1:19Lots of turnover.
- 1:20Like, serious churn.
- 1:22We helped them shift to a more structured,
- 1:24assessment-driven process.
- 1:26Within six months?
- 1:27Turnover dropped by 30%.
- 1:30That kind of change doesn't just save money-it changes the whole energy
- 1:34on the floor.
- 1:34That's huge.
- 1:36And it makes sense, right?
- 1:37Like, last episode we talked about how behavioral assessments can uncover
- 1:40stuff you'd never spot on a CV.
- 1:42This feels like the next level-going from just "filling a spot" to actually
- 1:47building a team that clicks.
- 1:47Exactly.
- 1:50The companies winning in 2025?
- 1:52They're not hiring to fill-they're hiring to build.
- 1:54It's a long game.
- 1:54Okay, so...
- 1:57if the old way's broken, what does the new way actually look like?
- 2:00How do you build a hiring process that's,
- 2:02you know, made for today?
- 2:02It starts with intention.
- 2:05Think of hiring like a sales funnel.
- 2:07You don't just toss a product on a shelf and pray someone buys it,
- 2:11right?
- 2:12You create awareness, you attract,
- 2:14engage, assess, and then-you close.
- 2:17Talent is no different.
- 2:19Every stage matters.
- 2:19I love that.
- 2:22But even at the first stage-like awareness-so many job posts are just...
- 2:26blah.
- 2:27Like, legal checklists, random buzzwords,
- 2:29nothing that makes you go, "Oh yeah,
- 2:31that's me." How do you make those stand out?
- 2:31The best job descriptions
- 2:35today?
- 2:35They feel like invitations.
- 2:37They tell a story-why this role matters,
- 2:41how it moves the mission forward,
- 2:43and who's likely to thrive.
- 2:45I've seen tech companies nail this.
- 2:47Instead of saying "must have five years of X," they paint a picture.
- 2:52It's like-here's what you'll build,
- 2:54here's the impact, here's where you'll grow.
- 2:54So it's almost like your
- 2:58employer brand starts with the job post.
- 3:01And then-after that-you can't just hang out on LinkedIn and hope someone
- 3:05scrolls by.
- 3:05Right?
- 3:05Exactly.
- 3:07The best talent?
- 3:08They're not all on LinkedIn.
- 3:10Smart companies are using niche job boards,
- 3:13referrals, social channels-even geo-targeted ads.
- 3:16And tapping your own team-getting them involved in the process-that's
- 3:20a game-changer.
- 3:21Helps with rapport and cultural fit.
- 3:21Yeah,
- 3:24I've seen companies add little things to their listings,
- 3:27like "Here's what your first 90 days look like" or "Meet your future
- 3:30team." Feels...
- 3:32real, you know?
- 3:33Do you think that actually shifts who applies?
- 3:33Absolutely.
- 3:36When you make it human and transparent,
- 3:38you attract people who are genuinely excited to join you.
- 3:41That's your first filter.
- 3:43And from there, it's about moving the right people through every
- 3:43stage-awareness,
- 3:48attraction, engagement, assessment,
- 3:50decision, onboarding.
- 3:52It's not just volume-it's precision.
- 3:52And that's where metrics come in
- 3:56too, right?
- 3:57Like...
- 3:57tracking who drops off, which channels work best-not just counting how
- 4:01many CVs came in.
- 4:03It's like what we talked about in that "Speed Game" episode-you can't
- 4:06improve what you're not measuring.
- 4:06Exactly.
- 4:09Great hiring funnels are always evolving.
- 4:11Just like a sales funnel, right?
- 4:13It's not about how fast you go-it's about how well each stage works.
- 4:13Okay,
- 4:18so let's say your funnel's solid-you're pulling in great people.
- 4:21How do you make sure you actually pick the right one?
- 4:23Not just the best-written resume?
- 4:23That's where assessments earn their
- 4:27keep.
- 4:27CVs tell you what someone's done.
- 4:30Assessments tell you how they think,
- 4:33how they work, how they'll fit.
- 4:35Tools like OAD's let you evaluate things like communication style,
- 4:40problem-solving, adaptability-even how well someone aligns with your
- 4:44culture.
- 4:45It cuts the guesswork-and the bias.
- 4:45And it's not just one person making
- 4:50the call anymore, right?
- 4:51I've seen more teams getting involved.
- 4:52Like group interviews, or even trial projects.
- 4:55Does that actually help?
- 4:55It does.
- 4:57Team-driven interviews can surface strengths-or red flags-a manager might
- 5:02miss.
- 5:02And for the candidate?
- 5:04They get a feel for the real culture,
- 5:06not just the shiny version on your website.
- 5:06Okay,
- 5:09so...
- 5:10you've made the hire.
- 5:11But I've seen so many companies just drop the ball there.
- 5:13Like-"Here's your laptop, good luck." What does great onboarding look
- 5:18like?
- 5:18I worked with a global retailer once.
- 5:20They had sky-high new hire turnover.
- 5:23When they rolled out a structured 30-60-90 day onboarding-clear goals,
- 5:28feedback loops, team intros-their retention jumped 70%.
- 5:32Yeah-seven-zero.
- 5:34What changed was how they welcomed people.
- 5:37It wasn't just, "Here's the job"-it was,
- 5:39"Here's how you succeed here."Seventy percent??
- 5:42That's insane.
- 5:44Was it just the plan, or were there other things they changed?
- 5:44It was
- 5:47both.
- 5:48The plan gave structure, but they also focused hard on culture immersion.
- 5:53Real team connections, value-based intros,
- 5:56personalized training paths.
- 5:58The message was-you belong here.
- 6:01You matter.
- 6:01That's such a good reminder that the work doesn't end with
- 6:05the offer letter.
- 6:06It's not about getting people in the door-it's about helping them thrive
- 6:09once they're inside.
- 6:10And those are the companies where people stay.
- 6:13And tell their friends.
- 6:13Exactly.
- 6:15When you treat hiring-and onboarding-as an integrated,
- 6:18strategic system, you don't just build teams.
- 6:21You build momentum.
- 6:21Okay-perfect place to wrap for today.
- 6:24And hey-if you want to see how this actually works in practice,
- 6:27head to O-A-D dot A-I.
- 6:29You can book a free demo and see how their behavioral assessments and
- 6:33hiring tools help you build smarter,
- 6:35stronger teams-right from the start.
- 6:35Thanks,
- 6:37Claire.
- 6:38Always great talking through this.
- 6:40And thanks to everyone listening.
- 6:42We've got more coming soon on The Science of Leading,
- 6:44so we hope you'll stick with us.
- 6:44See you next time!
- 6:47Take care, everybody.
