- 0:13Speaker 1: Yes, work from nineteen seventy one as the who There,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and this is Kevin's Sports Very Daily. Back in the
- 0:30Speaker 1: chair after a couple of weeks in Cyprus. And you
- 0:36Speaker 1: know they say, so it's nice to bring something home
- 0:38Speaker 1: from your holiday. Well I bought herm a sore throat
- 0:41Speaker 1: and a cough. So there's no one else in the studio,
- 0:44Speaker 1: so you're quite safe out there in radio land. And
- 0:47Speaker 1: I'm sorry for a bit of the full start. I've
- 0:49Speaker 1: been out of the chair for a couple of weeks
- 0:51Speaker 1: and i just pressed a few wrong buttons, but I'm
- 0:53Speaker 1: now now alive on air. This is Thursday. It's the
- 0:57Speaker 1: Folkston then Hive Sports Show. Today Show. We'll be bringing
- 1:01Speaker 1: you a round up of football. I've been catching up.
- 1:04Speaker 1: So we've got folks in Victory, We've got High Town,
- 1:07Speaker 1: we've got New Romney and Hawkins Town football clubs. We
- 1:11Speaker 1: got a couple of special reports, one on my marshalling
- 1:13Speaker 1: duties at the Leptos four day Challenge, including a catch
- 1:17Speaker 1: up with my running friends at the Panthers Running Club,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and a special report on an event called high Rocks.
- 1:23Speaker 1: High Rocks Ever heard of it? Well, stay tuned and
- 1:26Speaker 1: I'll tell you all about it now. I played that song,
- 1:29Speaker 1: specially the Who Won't Get Forward Again from nineteen seventy
- 1:32Speaker 1: one for a certain mister Roger Daltrey. And do you
- 1:36Speaker 1: know what, he's eighty one years old now, but he
- 1:39Speaker 1: received a knighthood actually just the other day for his
- 1:43Speaker 1: services to music and charity. Now, whilst he's known as
- 1:47Speaker 1: the frontman of The Who, Roger Daltrey is also a
- 1:50Speaker 1: curator of the Teenage Cancer Trust concerts and he's been
- 1:54Speaker 1: doing that for more than twenty years. And in that
- 1:56Speaker 1: time the concerts raised a whopping listen to sit there
- 2:00Speaker 1: and listened to this thirty four million pounds for the
- 2:03Speaker 1: charity and which led to the setting up of twenty
- 2:07Speaker 1: eight specialized units within the NHS. Now a bet a
- 2:12Speaker 1: lot of people don't know that, and I knew he
- 2:15Speaker 1: was involved with the charity, but it's only until I
- 2:17Speaker 1: started doing a bit of research this morning that I
- 2:19Speaker 1: realized in what scale. So there you go. He was
- 2:22Speaker 1: back in sixty seventies a bit of a wild man
- 2:25Speaker 1: of pop. But now what has he done with his life.
- 2:28Speaker 1: He's turned it around to help so many other people.
- 2:31Speaker 1: That is absolutely fantastic. So arise Sir Roger Oil deserve right.
- 2:37Speaker 1: So it's football times. So let's start with folksing in Victor. Well,
- 2:42Speaker 1: like I say, I've been away for a few weeks
- 2:45Speaker 1: and they have gone from strength to strength and after
- 2:48Speaker 1: Saturday's one nil victory over second place at Brentwood, they
- 2:51Speaker 1: now stand top of the league with a nine point
- 2:54Speaker 1: gap and a game in hand. Manager Jay Saunders is
- 2:58Speaker 1: trying to keep the player's feet on the ground, but
- 3:00Speaker 1: he's doing a very very good job and they are
- 3:02Speaker 1: definitely got their feet on the ground. They're taking things
- 3:06Speaker 1: as professionally as they can. But obviously the fans are
- 3:09Speaker 1: getting a bit excited talking about promotion now. It's got
- 3:13Speaker 1: to be said though things are looking good. It's a
- 3:16Speaker 1: season of forty two league games and so far in
- 3:19Speaker 1: Victor have played nineteen. They won fifteen, drawn three and
- 3:23Speaker 1: lost just the one. But don't forget there are still
- 3:26Speaker 1: twenty three games to go and anything can happen. For example,
- 3:30Speaker 1: the Saturday is a massive Ken derby away at Dartford
- 3:33Speaker 1: who are fourth and well now that folks on the top,
- 3:36Speaker 1: teams like Dartford will be looking to put one over
- 3:39Speaker 1: on them, and in Victor, despite a nine point cushion
- 3:42Speaker 1: must not let complacency set in. Still it's bought big
- 3:46Speaker 1: crowds to the ground. Last Saturday saw nearly fifteen hundred fans,
- 3:50Speaker 1: a far cry from back in the Uspian South East
- 3:52Speaker 1: days when they were sort of the middle of the
- 3:55Speaker 1: table and we look out the commentary window and me
- 3:58Speaker 1: and Terry they're in the PA box and we go, emmy,
- 4:01Speaker 1: do you reckon? Could be three hundred or it might
- 4:04Speaker 1: be three hundred and fifty, but those days are gone now,
- 4:07Speaker 1: so let's look forward to a good future in a
- 4:09Speaker 1: good twenty twenty six Ladies. Last week the Invictor Ladies
- 4:13Speaker 1: game away at Sellings was postponed due to a water
- 4:16Speaker 1: log pitch, and this week they are at home to
- 4:18Speaker 1: Bidden Them. It's a two pm kickoff at the on
- 4:21Speaker 1: Sunday at the Alkaline Stadium. Hi ta I. Meanwhile, well
- 4:26Speaker 1: they continue on that slippery slope. Last Saturday they lost
- 4:30Speaker 1: four noil at home to Phoenix Sports. Prior to this
- 4:33Speaker 1: season will be avoiding relegation, there's no doubt about it.
- 4:37Speaker 1: On Saturday they are at home to Stansfield. Now Stanfield
- 4:40Speaker 1: are our bottom club and our second bottom. But so
- 4:43Speaker 1: you could say this is a six pointer, but listen
- 4:46Speaker 1: to these facts. Iive have played eighteen with eleven points
- 4:49Speaker 1: and Stansfield have played sixteen games with ten points, so
- 4:54Speaker 1: there's only a point in it. But Stansfield have got
- 4:56Speaker 1: two games up this leave, so this really is a
- 4:59Speaker 1: must win game. So anyway, let's hope that they can
- 5:01Speaker 1: do this and start pulling away from that relegation zone.
- 5:04Speaker 1: They've got a new manager now, so let's hope for
- 5:06Speaker 1: her in new things down there at Richfield's. In twenty
- 5:09Speaker 1: twenty six, meanwhile, it was all quiet down on the
- 5:13Speaker 1: Marsh as New Romney's first team game against Kent United
- 5:16Speaker 1: was postponed and I couldn't find a result for the Seconds,
- 5:19Speaker 1: guessing that they didn't have a game. This Saturday, the
- 5:21Speaker 1: first team try again to repeat last week's fixture against
- 5:24Speaker 1: Kent United. It's actually in the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield
- 5:28Speaker 1: and the Seconds are at home to Lenham Wonders in
- 5:31Speaker 1: the Ashford District Premier Division. Hawkinshtown traveled away to Southeast
- 5:35Speaker 1: London where they beat Meridian VP by two goals to Niel,
- 5:39Speaker 1: pushing them up to a fourth place. This Saturday there
- 5:42Speaker 1: on the road again, this time to Bexley who are
- 5:45Speaker 1: eleventh out of nineteen teams, and the reserves well, they
- 5:49Speaker 1: are also away at they travel away not too far
- 5:53Speaker 1: the Julie Row Stadium to take on ac Ashford Reserves.
- 5:57Speaker 1: So moving on, we've got to be a rugby news now.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So last Saturday, both Folkston first and second teams played
- 6:04Speaker 1: against Maidstone. The first fifteen traveled away and beat them
- 6:08Speaker 1: twenty nine points to twenty two, but the Seconds were
- 6:10Speaker 1: at home and suffered a forty seven point to seven defeat.
- 6:14Speaker 1: This week the First welcome Old Alanians to Burlington Fields,
- 6:18Speaker 1: who traveled down from Dulledge which is in south east London,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and the Seconds traveled to Lee, which is just off
- 6:23Speaker 1: the A twenty one between a Chiddingstone and a tunbridge. Now,
- 6:27Speaker 1: the ladies last game was on November the twenty third,
- 6:30Speaker 1: when they beat seven Oaks by twelve points to five.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But they're back in action this Sunday away and this
- 6:35Speaker 1: is a real local derby. This will be a tough one.
- 6:38Speaker 1: They're playing Ashford Ladies, so look out for the result
- 6:42Speaker 1: of that one. Okay. So let's see what we've got
- 6:45Speaker 1: coming up next. You know, I haven't had a chance
- 6:46Speaker 1: to look at this playlist. Yet I'm sure there's a
- 6:48Speaker 1: couple of great tracks coming up. Well we got yeah,
- 6:52Speaker 1: I love this one now about a McFly and a
- 6:54Speaker 1: bit of all about You. It's sold. Its sad that
- 7:17Speaker 1: it's sad. It's Solva McFly there with a bit of harmony.
- 7:34Speaker 1: They just they were up the two recently a lot
- 7:37Speaker 1: of people went to see them and they are still
- 7:38Speaker 1: very popular. I haven't known much about them lately record wized,
- 7:41Speaker 1: but they're still out there doing it and they've got
- 7:43Speaker 1: a lot of fans. Okay now. Then last Sunday I
- 7:47Speaker 1: was on the bandstand comparing the second that South Kent
- 7:50Speaker 1: Mind Mental Health run, and for the second year in
- 7:53Speaker 1: a row, it poured with rain. Over two hundred hardy
- 7:57Speaker 1: souls turned up, however, and I think most of them
- 7:59Speaker 1: made a really thoroughly good day. And the day started
- 8:02Speaker 1: with a welcome speech from our local MP, Tony Vaughan
- 8:05Speaker 1: and then a great warm up from Julie Gibbs. And
- 8:08Speaker 1: due to the rain, we asked people to join us
- 8:10Speaker 1: on the bandstand and Julie was joined by around fifty elves,
- 8:14Speaker 1: all adding up to a brilliant warm up routine. The
- 8:17Speaker 1: idea was that the Mental Elf Runners it was called.
- 8:20Speaker 1: We did encourage people to dress up as elves or
- 8:22Speaker 1: anything to do with Christmas really and I must say
- 8:26Speaker 1: that you all entered into the spirit of things. It
- 8:29Speaker 1: was excellent now. The run walk jog itself was a
- 8:33Speaker 1: five k route along the LEAs, very similar to the
- 8:35Speaker 1: Park Run course and it's starting to finish in at
- 8:38Speaker 1: the bandstand and it was also good to see an
- 8:41Speaker 1: In Beresford from Sangate Primary who entered a team. I
- 8:44Speaker 1: think there was about twenty of them turned up. It
- 8:46Speaker 1: was a well all day to be fair, but there
- 8:49Speaker 1: was all ages and they were joined in babies in
- 8:51Speaker 1: buggies and dog walkers. It was a fantastic now considering
- 8:55Speaker 1: the rain, everyone seemed in good spirits and reminders were
- 8:58Speaker 1: given out as to why they were taking part and
- 9:01Speaker 1: that was to help others with the mental health problems.
- 9:04Speaker 1: A Joe Tolhurst and his team put on a lot
- 9:07Speaker 1: of hard work into the day and managed to find
- 9:09Speaker 1: sponsorship from holiday extras and Saga and a big thank
- 9:13Speaker 1: you must go to the members of the Channel Rotary
- 9:16Speaker 1: Club who were marshall in and of course the Saint
- 9:19Speaker 1: John's Ambulance Serve for providing first aid. Now the event
- 9:23Speaker 1: looks to be one that's for the future. It could
- 9:26Speaker 1: be sitting stone this one. So let's hope when it
- 9:29Speaker 1: goes ahead next year the rain will stay away. Okay,
- 9:32Speaker 1: time for a bit of nineteen eighty four music now
- 9:34Speaker 1: from a Bruce Springsteen, and you're welcome to join in.
- 9:37Speaker 1: This one only is light, but this is dancing in
- 9:40Speaker 1: the dark, Bruce Bringsteen, dancing in the dark there, and
- 10:14Speaker 1: we're going straight into this cracking tune Nutbush City Limits.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And this one's going out to the k M dance
- 10:23Speaker 1: team that are coming in here on Saturday, and we
- 10:26Speaker 1: will be playing this song and they will be telling
- 10:29Speaker 1: us all about Tapathon. I'll tell you about it in
- 10:32Speaker 1: a minute. Now, that is a tune. Okay, So let's
- 10:55Speaker 1: I continue to turn on Nutbush City Limits and we
- 10:58Speaker 1: will be playing that again on Saturday, because on Saturday
- 11:02Speaker 1: we've got a group of young dancers coming in with
- 11:06Speaker 1: their dance teacher, Kirsty, and they are the KM Dance Team.
- 11:11Speaker 1: And it all started off with Tapathon. Now it's sounded
- 11:15Speaker 1: very athletic. I thought, what is that it's like? Is
- 11:18Speaker 1: it like a twenty four hour tap dancing routine. But
- 11:22Speaker 1: I'll tell you a bit more about it on Saturday.
- 11:24Speaker 1: But this would be to be fair. This will be
- 11:26Speaker 1: the third year they've come in and they always have
- 11:29Speaker 1: a little presentation, a little performance at the Folks the Lights,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and they've been very busy throughout the year on friends
- 11:35Speaker 1: of them on Facebook. And I think that you know what,
- 11:39Speaker 1: dancing I've discussed this before with people. Dancing is a
- 11:42Speaker 1: form of sport. It might not seem sporty if you like,
- 11:45Speaker 1: but the training and flexibility and the practice and rehearsal
- 11:51Speaker 1: to me, it's a sport. Okay, So what's next? Well,
- 11:56Speaker 1: I reckon, it's about time we talked about Cyprus and
- 12:00Speaker 1: I've been back for two weeks really, and let me
- 12:03Speaker 1: tell you it wasn't all about lying by the pool.
- 12:06Speaker 1: The weather was what can I say, well, it's very pleasant.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Whilst in the UK the first week certainly the temperature
- 12:13Speaker 1: dropped to zero and in the UK, but in Cyprus
- 12:17Speaker 1: it was Schultz and t shirt weather round about twenty
- 12:19Speaker 1: five degrees. Anyway, one of the main reasons going to
- 12:23Speaker 1: Cypress was besides the sun, was to help marshall a
- 12:27Speaker 1: running event called the Leptos four Day challenge. Now I
- 12:30Speaker 1: have spoken to you about this before, but that was
- 12:33Speaker 1: probably a last year, so a little reminder of what
- 12:36Speaker 1: it's all about. Well, the runners faced four days of
- 12:40Speaker 1: running different distances at different venues, and the day one
- 12:45Speaker 1: saw a six k time trial where runners set off
- 12:48Speaker 1: at intervals, basically running against themselves and against the clock. Now,
- 12:53Speaker 1: the finish line was next to a spectacular edgerrow. The
- 12:56Speaker 1: third is called which is an eighty meter long shipwreck
- 13:00Speaker 1: ship a run aground in twenty eleven carrying a cargo
- 13:04Speaker 1: of plasterboard. But it is a real massive tourist attraction.
- 13:09Speaker 1: It's sitting there, lying over around about ten eleven degrees
- 13:12Speaker 1: a rusting away to be fair. Unfortunately, it's marred by
- 13:18Speaker 1: a load of graffiti. Now, you can't go anywhere in
- 13:21Speaker 1: the world, can you without you see a nice sort
- 13:23Speaker 1: of blank piece of space, and the next day you
- 13:26Speaker 1: turn up it's got graffiti all over it, which is
- 13:29Speaker 1: a shame. I mean, it is a wreck at the
- 13:30Speaker 1: end of the day, but it just kind of spoils
- 13:33Speaker 1: it a with that graffiti. Anyway, it really is a
- 13:35Speaker 1: spectacular finish. They two saw a really tough eleven k
- 13:40Speaker 1: hill climb through an area known as the Akamas. It's
- 13:43Speaker 1: a thickly wooded mountainous region, so it was really tough
- 13:47Speaker 1: for the runners. Day three was a half marathon once
- 13:50Speaker 1: again through the tough hills of the Acamas, and they
- 13:53Speaker 1: four it was a flat city ten k run, starting
- 13:57Speaker 1: and finishing at the castle near the Pathors Harbor. And
- 14:00Speaker 1: these four days were really testing for the runners where
- 14:04Speaker 1: around two hundred of them from all over Europe took
- 14:06Speaker 1: part and we met up with four a local folks
- 14:09Speaker 1: and runners, Jane Wren, Alan Randall along with Melanroyd Powell.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Now their idea of preparing for a race was staying
- 14:16Speaker 1: up after midnight at a karaoke evening where yes, me
- 14:20Speaker 1: and myself and missus Ferrick got roped into and before
- 14:24Speaker 1: you ask, yes, I did get up well did I sing? Well?
- 14:27Speaker 1: I sung a sweet Caroline, only to find out that
- 14:30Speaker 1: somebody videoed it. But thankfully so far between you and me,
- 14:33Speaker 1: don't say anything. It hasn't appeared on social media, so
- 14:37Speaker 1: just keep it quiet between ourselves right now. It is
- 14:40Speaker 1: also the great to be joined by a nice work
- 14:43Speaker 1: colleague of Kevan James. He's the timer, the headtimer for
- 14:46Speaker 1: Nice Work and He absolutely loved the silence of the
- 14:49Speaker 1: marshaling points in the Akamas. One day his marshaling position,
- 14:54Speaker 1: he had the job of keeping a flock of sheep
- 14:56Speaker 1: off the mountain path out of the way of runners.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Great job we did as well, so big thanks go
- 15:03Speaker 1: to Dea and Harry, two characters who they are. They
- 15:06Speaker 1: put all their work in organizing such an international event.
- 15:09Speaker 1: So a massive thank you to Dea, Harry and the
- 15:12Speaker 1: family who all chipped in and did their own little bit.
- 15:15Speaker 1: That was a great family effort. Now we met up
- 15:18Speaker 1: with several volunteers from previous years, so I want to
- 15:21Speaker 1: say hello to Stephen, Mercedes, Janet and Steve and the
- 15:25Speaker 1: live wire that is Michelle. She really is a bundle
- 15:28Speaker 1: of energy. And a big thanks to the sponsors of
- 15:30Speaker 1: Leptos for looking after us. They really do look after
- 15:33Speaker 1: you with breakfast and lunches. Now we had a lovely
- 15:37Speaker 1: couple of weeks catching up with friends. We caught up
- 15:39Speaker 1: with Kazie and Martin. We met our friends David and
- 15:43Speaker 1: Anne and they had just moved into their new house,
- 15:46Speaker 1: so they showed us around there our lovely spot they
- 15:50Speaker 1: had too. We went on a music quiz with John
- 15:53Speaker 1: and Jean, Brian and Dion and Deal won a bottle
- 15:56Speaker 1: of wine. And I think we came about third, you
- 15:58Speaker 1: know which for our tea we were called the Stones.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Was an awesome achievement. Big Wild does go to Darryl
- 16:05Speaker 1: Big Daryl from Batho's Running Club. Now listen to this.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Darryl successfully completed is the nineteenth four day challenge. So
- 16:13Speaker 1: well done to you, Daryl. You looked a lot fitter
- 16:15Speaker 1: than you did last year. I can tell you that.
- 16:18Speaker 1: But you can't pack up now, Darryl. You've got one
- 16:20Speaker 1: more to go. You can make it twenty and then
- 16:22Speaker 1: you can hang it. Train us up. We had a
- 16:25Speaker 1: lovely two weeks. Will we be going back next year? Well?
- 16:29Speaker 1: Do you know what we say? Every year? We think,
- 16:31Speaker 1: oh it's time to go somewhere else, but we shall
- 16:34Speaker 1: wait and see. Anyway, This one is for you, Melon Royd.
- 16:38Speaker 1: This is one that This is me. Actually, this is
- 16:42Speaker 1: what I recorded out in Cyprus. This is me. This
- 16:44Speaker 1: is from Mel Royd, Jane and Allen and this me
- 16:48Speaker 1: singing tweet Caroline, wear it bigger? Don't you think I
- 16:59Speaker 1: sound like Neil Diamond? Hm? But then I know it's
- 17:03Speaker 1: grew and strong. There you go this move singing in
- 17:12Speaker 1: Sweet Caroline, as recorded at the Coral Beach Hotel in Cyprus.
- 17:18Speaker 1: So just like him to I, Well, that was a
- 17:22Speaker 1: great night actually, to be fair, it was a good
- 17:24Speaker 1: fun night. And I think we all got up a
- 17:28Speaker 1: j Alan Randall. He's got a good voice, you know,
- 17:30Speaker 1: he's a bit of a crooner. And we got up
- 17:33Speaker 1: and we did a double act of Righteous Brothers and
- 17:36Speaker 1: I didn't know the words of it, first time we'd
- 17:38Speaker 1: ever sung it together. And yeah, we might have made
- 17:42Speaker 1: we did all right. I think Jane wouldn't get up.
- 17:46Speaker 1: She wouldn't up. She's got up if there was a crowd,
- 17:48Speaker 1: as did missus. Ferrit and and Roy joined in the crowd.
- 17:52Speaker 1: But Mail she got up and did a little bit.
- 17:54Speaker 1: So anyway, it was a good evening and it just
- 17:57Speaker 1: all edge to the to the party thing, doesn't it,
- 18:00Speaker 1: you know. I mean they had to get out and run,
- 18:02Speaker 1: but we had to get up about two hours earlier
- 18:04Speaker 1: than them to go off for Marshall. But was we complaining?
- 18:08Speaker 1: Not really know? It was loving and sonny while it
- 18:10Speaker 1: was freezing cold over here. Anyway, staying with the Cypress theme, now,
- 18:14Speaker 1: I want to bring your attention to a group of
- 18:15Speaker 1: ladies that I know out there called the Soul Sisters.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Now I've spoken about them before after my visits to Cypress,
- 18:22Speaker 1: and I've got to know them quite well now and
- 18:25Speaker 1: what they and what they do they do something special,
- 18:28Speaker 1: They do something special for a cancer charity. Now I'm
- 18:31Speaker 1: going to blow me on trumpet a little bit here.
- 18:33Speaker 1: But you may not know this, but I've been a
- 18:34Speaker 1: volunteer and unofficial ambassador if you like, for Cancer Research
- 18:39Speaker 1: UK for over what I don't know, twenty twenty two
- 18:41Speaker 1: years now, putting on my pink outfit and standing up
- 18:44Speaker 1: on stage in front of thousands of people a Race
- 18:47Speaker 1: for Life events all around the County of Kent. And
- 18:50Speaker 1: my biggest honor was being recognized and being invited by
- 18:54Speaker 1: the late Queen Elizabeth to a garden party at Buckingham Palace.
- 18:58Speaker 1: No it wasn't just me and the Queen. There was
- 19:00Speaker 1: many many volunteers there from all different types of charities
- 19:03Speaker 1: that we all felt really special having tea with the Queen. Now,
- 19:08Speaker 1: cancer isn't just in the UK, it is everywhere. And
- 19:11Speaker 1: the Sole Sisters of Pathos Running Club hold two huge
- 19:14Speaker 1: events to raise money for the Pancer Patients Support Group
- 19:18Speaker 1: in Cyprus, they held a five k fun run walk
- 19:22Speaker 1: which was attended by two hundred and fifty runners, most
- 19:25Speaker 1: of them dressed in pink wigs, two two's pink t
- 19:27Speaker 1: shirts and flowery pink bras. Yes, and the men as
- 19:31Speaker 1: well included in that one Now one year he actually
- 19:34Speaker 1: coincided with our visit and we went along and joined
- 19:37Speaker 1: in and it was called to Breast of Friends then,
- 19:40Speaker 1: but it was great fun. Well, there was an energetic
- 19:44Speaker 1: warm up and then the Boss Loue Boss Club president
- 19:48Speaker 1: Sue Cawdrey, who herself has run over forty marathons, she
- 19:52Speaker 1: gave a short brief in and I caught up with Sue.
- 19:56Speaker 1: You know, we were walking. It was our last morning
- 20:00Speaker 1: in Cyprus, and we thought we'd just go for We've
- 20:02Speaker 1: got a little favorite walk just on the rocky coast
- 20:06Speaker 1: by Keralia Bay and the Pathfors's Running Club are out
- 20:09Speaker 1: there doing an event, doing a little try event, and
- 20:13Speaker 1: so I got chanted to Sue, and she's an amazing
- 20:15Speaker 1: character that's been out there for eighteen years, and it
- 20:18Speaker 1: really hit home when she said, you know what it's
- 20:21Speaker 1: like being on holiday for eighteen years? I thought, Oh,
- 20:23Speaker 1: what's the ideal that is? That's brilliant. I love that.
- 20:26Speaker 1: I'll go home with that thought. But she puts loads
- 20:30Speaker 1: of workloads of energy into the Soul Sisters and to
- 20:33Speaker 1: the running club, and she needs a really, really big
- 20:36Speaker 1: pat on the back. Anyway, on the day she got
- 20:38Speaker 1: the runners going with a big blast of the airhorn
- 20:41Speaker 1: and a great fun time was had by all. Now,
- 20:45Speaker 1: the second event was held a couple of weeks later
- 20:48Speaker 1: up the hill in the Coral Star in Payer. If
- 20:51Speaker 1: you've ever been to Payer you might know the Coral Start.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Now this is a venue they hadn't used before as
- 20:57Speaker 1: the expected numbers had outgrown the previous VI. Two hundred
- 21:01Speaker 1: and forty people turned up for a coffee and a
- 21:03Speaker 1: cake morning, and they were joined by singer Luise Rioni
- 21:07Speaker 1: and as well as the twenty two strong B Sharp
- 21:10Speaker 1: choir who volunteered their services. Now this ended up in
- 21:13Speaker 1: true a Soul Sister's tradition, in a bit of a
- 21:16Speaker 1: sing song and an ease up, and it was only
- 21:18Speaker 1: eleven o'clock in the morning. What are they like? Anyway?
- 21:21Speaker 1: The local community rallied round air local businesses donated raffle prizes,
- 21:26Speaker 1: seventeen lucky people going home with a prize. But once
- 21:29Speaker 1: again the main point of the fun event was to
- 21:32Speaker 1: raise money for the Cyprus Cancer Patients Support Group. Now,
- 21:36Speaker 1: during my stay, I joined some of the Soul Sisters
- 21:38Speaker 1: for breakfast and I was honored. You know, I was
- 21:41Speaker 1: the only man there. But once again I am an
- 21:43Speaker 1: honorary member of the Soul Sisters. Did you know that? Anyway,
- 21:47Speaker 1: I caught up with Listen to this as well, a
- 21:49Speaker 1: breast cancer survivor and Soul Sister, Jackie Mizzen, and she
- 21:53Speaker 1: told me that the hard work and effort between the
- 21:55Speaker 1: two events raised a massive and nine thousand euros which
- 21:59Speaker 1: is nearly eight thousand pounds. And the money, the money
- 22:02Speaker 1: we'll go towards helping to cover the cost of a
- 22:05Speaker 1: specially equipped bus with hydraulic wheelchair access. And I must
- 22:10Speaker 1: just say hello to a few of the other Soul Sisters.
- 22:13Speaker 1: I want to say hello to Greta Jeanette. Jeannette is
- 22:17Speaker 1: Darryl's wife and she's had to put up with Daryl
- 22:20Speaker 1: running for the last nineteen years and doing all his
- 22:23Speaker 1: training at the four day Challenge. Anyway, it was nice
- 22:27Speaker 1: to meet you, Jeanette and chanting to Truce. Now. Truce
- 22:30Speaker 1: is an organizer of walks with the Pathos Walking Group,
- 22:35Speaker 1: which is within the club, and she organized this walk.
- 22:38Speaker 1: She's got a portfolio of loads and loads of walks,
- 22:41Speaker 1: and we've been on quite a few of them, and
- 22:44Speaker 1: we end up in places where we would never ever
- 22:47Speaker 1: have been before in Cyprus, and we have a little
- 22:50Speaker 1: drive out find a venue led by Truce's experience, was
- 22:54Speaker 1: normally a car park with a restaurant, and we pop
- 22:56Speaker 1: in and we put our order in so that they
- 23:00Speaker 1: know when they come back. There might be twenty five
- 23:02Speaker 1: of us come back and at least they know what
- 23:05Speaker 1: we're going to eat, and then we have lunch ab
- 23:07Speaker 1: a chat and then if we go. What a great
- 23:09Speaker 1: way to spend the day. Now, I was introduced to
- 23:12Speaker 1: some of the other members, but I must apologize I
- 23:14Speaker 1: can't remember their names, but I will say that they
- 23:17Speaker 1: did make me feel very welcome. Now, cancer is all
- 23:21Speaker 1: around the world and these events one day will help
- 23:23Speaker 1: to eradicate it. So keep up the good work, you
- 23:26Speaker 1: Soul Sisters. Now, I was looking for a song to
- 23:29Speaker 1: play for the Soul Sisters last time I've played them
- 23:32Speaker 1: as it's actually called Soul Sister by train, but decided
- 23:35Speaker 1: to have a little change. I think they will love
- 23:38Speaker 1: this one, and I think it's quite poignant actually, because
- 23:42Speaker 1: two of the members of this group, if you like,
- 23:46Speaker 1: said he lost their lives to cancer and the whole
- 23:48Speaker 1: family was touched by cancer, but it never stopped him
- 23:51Speaker 1: from making this absolute floor filler. As soon as you
- 23:55Speaker 1: hear this, Soul Sisters, I know you will be up dancing.
- 23:58Speaker 1: So thanks for the braainakfast and we'll see you in May.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I'm giving it not now, but as the Nolan's, they
- 24:39Speaker 1: are in the mood for dancing. And as I said before,
- 24:41Speaker 1: they have all been touched by cancer in that family,
- 24:43Speaker 1: but that is a legacy they've left behind. That is
- 24:46Speaker 1: a definite floor filler. And we're going to go straight on.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I think what we're going to do. We're going to
- 24:52Speaker 1: play another song from the Who. Now, this is a
- 24:55Speaker 1: classic one that really got them going. If you like.
- 24:59Speaker 1: This is a nineteen SI six five track and it's
- 25:02Speaker 1: very What can I say is that there's a couple
- 25:05Speaker 1: of lyrics in there and you'll know this, and I'm
- 25:08Speaker 1: sure Roger Daltrey wrote these and one classic lyrics that
- 25:12Speaker 1: lyric that says, I hope I'd die before I get old. Well,
- 25:16Speaker 1: Roger Daltrey is now eighty one. His wish didn't come true,
- 25:20Speaker 1: Thank goodness, because in his work for Teenage Cancer Trust
- 25:23Speaker 1: he has raised absolutely millions and millions pounds for that charity.
- 25:27Speaker 1: So it's a good J'll be still around anyway, Roger,
- 25:30Speaker 1: and all the TV the recipients of the benefits that
- 25:34Speaker 1: have been raised by Teenage Cancer this is for you.
- 25:37Speaker 1: This is where it all started back in nineteen sixty five.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Target around Jenera. Just with Charles, we get around around
- 25:58Speaker 1: as to who in my generation from the nineteen sixty
- 26:00Speaker 1: five and it's a big tribute there to Roger Daltrey,
- 26:04Speaker 1: who was knighted only a couple of days ago. A rise, sir, Roger.
- 26:08Speaker 1: I bet any ever thought of that, did he? I
- 26:10Speaker 1: think he was a council boy from the East end
- 26:12Speaker 1: of London and look how he turned out so well
- 26:15Speaker 1: well done, Roger. Okay, So we turn into our last
- 26:18Speaker 1: feature article of the day. And now if I said
- 26:22Speaker 1: to you what is high rocks, you might not know.
- 26:25Speaker 1: I didn't know till the well say, a few months ago,
- 26:28Speaker 1: but high rocks is a form of fitness racing, and
- 26:31Speaker 1: I'll tell you what it's not for the fainthearted. The
- 26:34Speaker 1: first high rocks competition was held in Hamburg in twenty eighteen.
- 26:38Speaker 1: So it's a relatively new sport. So let me try
- 26:41Speaker 1: and explain what it's all about. Basically, it starts with
- 26:44Speaker 1: a one k run and then you stop at an
- 26:47Speaker 1: exercise station, you perform a set of exercises. Then you
- 26:51Speaker 1: carry on with another one kilometer run and then onto
- 26:56Speaker 1: another exercise station, and this cycle happens eight times. Each
- 27:00Speaker 1: stop is a different form of exercise. Now, the exercise stations,
- 27:05Speaker 1: if you can imagine it, really imagine a massive, massive hall, right,
- 27:09Speaker 1: huge hall, and you have to go around these stations,
- 27:12Speaker 1: the exercise stations as they call. After the first kilometer run,
- 27:16Speaker 1: the first one is a thousand meters on a ski ergo. Now,
- 27:21Speaker 1: a skigo is a concept machine that kind of replicates
- 27:24Speaker 1: the arm action of skiing, and you've got to do
- 27:27Speaker 1: that for a kilometer and then you do a kilometer
- 27:30Speaker 1: run and number two is a fifty meter sled push
- 27:36Speaker 1: and it's basically what it says, it's pushing a piece
- 27:39Speaker 1: of apparatus which with it's got weights on and you
- 27:42Speaker 1: have to push it along the ground for fifty meters.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Then it's a fifty meter sledge pull, which is slightly different.
- 27:51Speaker 1: It's pretty much like being in a tugger wall competition
- 27:55Speaker 1: where you pull the sled by a rope for your
- 27:59Speaker 1: fifty meters, and but that's got weights on and it's
- 28:03Speaker 1: not easy. It's not the sort of thing like a
- 28:05Speaker 1: fishing rod where you're just really in. It. Really is tough.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Then it's on to a number four, which is burpie
- 28:12Speaker 1: broad jumps, where you do a burpie, then stretch out
- 28:16Speaker 1: to the next one. Then there's the one kilometer run.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Then there's a thousand meters on a raying machine. And
- 28:22Speaker 1: this is pretty straightforward to describe it. You jump on
- 28:25Speaker 1: a ray machine and you've got a thousand meters to do.
- 28:28Speaker 1: But every exercise stretches your muscles, your different muscles every time.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Number six is two one hundred meters of what they
- 28:36Speaker 1: call the farmers carry. Now this is carrying two like
- 28:39Speaker 1: kettle ball type things with weights which are weighted, and
- 28:43Speaker 1: you've got to carry them for two hundred meters, probably
- 28:45Speaker 1: not carrying two small car batteries around, really really tough
- 28:49Speaker 1: on the arms. Then number seven is one hundred meters
- 28:53Speaker 1: of sandbag lunges. Now this is performing a lunge with
- 28:58Speaker 1: carrying a sack like weight over on your shoulders for
- 29:02Speaker 1: one hundred meters. And finally number eight is called one
- 29:05Speaker 1: hundred wall balls. It's like throwing a medicine ball up
- 29:09Speaker 1: into the air about the sort of size of a
- 29:11Speaker 1: basketball nets, you know, and catching it. And then you
- 29:16Speaker 1: do a squad and you've got to do that one
- 29:18Speaker 1: hundred times, and then you've got a little job to
- 29:21Speaker 1: the finish line. And as I said, it's not for
- 29:23Speaker 1: the faint hearted, and specialist training is necessary. Now one
- 29:28Speaker 1: lady who is not faint hearted and took on the
- 29:30Speaker 1: High Rocks challenge is my friend and my next door neighbor, Arena.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Now Arena works for Eurotunnel and those several of my
- 29:37Speaker 1: ex colleagues. So I want to say hello to all
- 29:39Speaker 1: my old pals at ET. Actually most of them like
- 29:42Speaker 1: me now I've done their bit and retired. Anyway, Irena
- 29:46Speaker 1: told me that she competed in her first High Rocks competition.
- 29:50Speaker 1: She traveled to the Excel Stadium in London and as
- 29:54Speaker 1: we said before, the size of it, she could not
- 29:56Speaker 1: get over the size of the place, it was massive.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Now to try for high Rocks you need specialist equipment.
- 30:02Speaker 1: So Arena's joined the white Cliff's CrossFit Club, which is
- 30:05Speaker 1: located at Ross Way. You know, when you've been to
- 30:07Speaker 1: the tip and if you look to the left there
- 30:10Speaker 1: that's where it is. That's the white Cliffs CrossFit Club.
- 30:14Speaker 1: But there's another club in first Lane called the Dynamics
- 30:18Speaker 1: Fitness where actually another Eurotinal colleague of mine, Tom Jordan,
- 30:22Speaker 1: he trains there and he's taken part in a couple
- 30:24Speaker 1: of High Rocks events. So Arena traveled up to London
- 30:28Speaker 1: with her husband, Alex Wu was very supportive during her
- 30:32Speaker 1: on and Arena said it did make a difference having
- 30:34Speaker 1: him there. And although this may be the first time
- 30:37Speaker 1: you've heard of high Rocks, this a massive event. Was
- 30:40Speaker 1: staggered over four days and attracted around forty thousand competitors. Now,
- 30:46Speaker 1: the thing is it is it's a total logistical monightmare.
- 30:49Speaker 1: If you can imagine putting this on. On the day
- 30:52Speaker 1: of Arena's race, I think there was over two thousand
- 30:55Speaker 1: in it, but they had to go off one hundred
- 30:57Speaker 1: at a time, so they've got a gauge, you know,
- 31:00Speaker 1: how far they can go, that sort of thing, and
- 31:03Speaker 1: it really was a really tough day and so she
- 31:07Speaker 1: felt proud, happy, and slightly exhausted when she finished. But
- 31:12Speaker 1: well done to you, Arena now slightly exhausted. Does that
- 31:15Speaker 1: mean there's room for another one? I think there might be,
- 31:18Speaker 1: and we're going to try and see if we can
- 31:19Speaker 1: get her in on the show. So anyway, that's about
- 31:22Speaker 1: it for me. I'll be back on Saturday, and I'm
- 31:26Speaker 1: going to find out a little bit more about Higher
- 31:28Speaker 1: Rocks And it actually used to stand for hybrid and
- 31:32Speaker 1: rock star, so there you go, she's a rockstar. Okay,
- 31:36Speaker 1: So that's it for me and I'll be back on
- 31:38Speaker 1: Saturday on one five point nine FM, online at Radio
- 31:43Speaker 1: Folkston dot com and on your smart speaker.
