- 0:09We're going to finish up on our series of stewardship.
- 0:13And since I don't have to do the doctrinal reading,
- 0:16I'm going to pray. We're going to dig right in
- 0:18immediately. And then this is not going to, this
- 0:21is, it's not a hard message, but it's a very
- 0:25straightforward message. I mean, the scripture
- 0:27is really clear. and God says some things that
- 0:30are really hard, and that's okay. So let's just
- 0:33pray, and we'll dig in. Father, I want to thank
- 0:34you so much for your goodness. Thank you for
- 0:37your faithfulness. Thank you, Lord, for your
- 0:38word. Thank you that we can love you, love your
- 0:40word, love your ways, love your things. I ask,
- 0:42Lord, that you would speak to your people at
- 0:44the full council of your word as spoken and taught
- 0:46today, that you are honored and glorified, and
- 0:48you would draw all men unto you as you have promised.
- 0:51We praise you and thank you. In Jesus' name,
- 0:53amen. Fundamentally, So this is love his things,
- 0:58the heart of the steward, the heart of the steward.
- 1:01Fundamentally, stewardship is about exercising
- 1:04our God -given dominion over his creation, reflecting
- 1:07the image of our creator, creator God in his
- 1:11care, responsibility, maintenance, protection,
- 1:14and beautification of his creation, R .C. Sproul.
- 1:17In Genesis 126, Then God said, let us make man
- 1:21in our image and in our likeness and let them
- 1:23have dominion over the fish of the sea and over
- 1:27the birds of the heavens and over the livestock
- 1:28and over all the earth and over every creeping
- 1:31thing that creeps on the earth. I want you to
- 1:34hear that. God created man and he made him a
- 1:37steward. He gave him a trust, the trust of all
- 1:41of his things. Everything is God's. Our responsibility
- 1:45is to steward it. Genesis 2 .15, for God took
- 1:49them, the man, took the man and put them, put
- 1:54him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep
- 1:56it. You are to work and steward his stuff. The
- 2:01true steward is put in trust with his master's
- 2:05property for us to protect it. Oh, with what
- 2:09earnestness ought we to guard the gospel of Christ?
- 2:14with what holy valor ought we to contend earnestly
- 2:18for the faith once for all delivered to the saints.
- 2:22Hold fast the form of sound words, wrote Paul
- 2:26and Timothy, not only the words, but particular
- 2:30form of them, which the apostles had delivered,
- 2:34not merely sound doctrine, but the very words
- 2:38in which these doctrines have been made to take
- 2:41shape. The true steward is to defend his master's
- 2:51treasure with his very life. And the Lord has
- 2:54put us in trust with the gospel. And all the
- 2:59people of God, in their measure, have also become
- 3:02trustees of those inestimably precious doctrines
- 3:08wherein will be found the glory of God and the
- 3:11salvation of the sons of men. So we are to defend
- 3:15our master's property, Charles Spurgeon. That's
- 3:18a hard word. Who would have thought that? 1 Corinthians
- 3:224, 1 through 2. This is how... one should regard
- 3:26us as servants of Christ and stewards of the
- 3:30mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required as
- 3:34stewards that they be found faithful. So stewardship
- 3:38is the next to salvation is the, in my opinion,
- 3:42most important biblical practice. If you cannot
- 3:47steward, you cannot love God. You've got to steward
- 3:51your relationship with him. He has given that
- 3:53as a trust to you. You have to steward his word.
- 3:56You have to steward his ways. And you have to
- 3:59steward his things. Stewardship. As you guys
- 4:04know, when we first got here, the first thing
- 4:08I did was walk through the buildings. And I found
- 4:10these secret places where we would hide stuff.
- 4:18And so I go downstairs. This building is one
- 4:21of them. As you guys know, Beacon was another.
- 4:23So I went downstairs, and I find in the kids'
- 4:26room, there's this double closet space area.
- 4:29And I walk in, and there's all kinds of stuff.
- 4:32And I said to Jody, I believe it was Jody. It
- 4:35was one of you guys. I think it was you, Jody.
- 4:39I really do. I said, how long has this been here?
- 4:43Oh, 25 years. I said, we've never used it in
- 4:4725 years. She goes, no. I said, why do we have
- 4:51it? Because we might need it one day. I said,
- 4:54you haven't needed it for 25 years. So in God's
- 4:58providence, up comes the dumpsters. And two dumpsters,
- 5:04full later, we cleaned it out. Why is this important?
- 5:09Because we have to steward the very things he's
- 5:11given us, the property. It's the easiest way
- 5:14to show that you love God by stewarding the very
- 5:17simplest things. The simplest things. His stuff.
- 5:22My responsibility immediately was to start stewarding
- 5:25his people. To love them. To walk with them.
- 5:28To go through struggles with them. And so stewardship
- 5:32was the first thing that I established when I
- 5:35got here. We cleaned house. We cleaned house.
- 5:40A steward is to do the will of the master and
- 5:42freely share what the master has given. 1 Corinthians
- 5:464 .1. This is how one should regard us as servants
- 5:49of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.
- 5:52The one thing that God has given us that's of
- 5:54greatest value is the gospel. And are we stewarding
- 5:58it and giving it away? Because that's what the
- 6:01master said we should do. 1 Peter 4 .1 -11. Since
- 6:06therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves
- 6:09with the same way of thinking. How should you
- 6:13think? If Christ came to suffer, then you should
- 6:17also want to suffer. For whoever has suffered
- 6:21in the flesh has ceased, has refrained, has desist
- 6:27from sin. That's what this word ceased means.
- 6:30I don't know if in the English they did it justice
- 6:32in the ESV in translation of ceased. It's more
- 6:36of refraining and desisting of sin. Because as
- 6:39long as we live in this body, we are seriously
- 6:41going to struggle with the battle of it. Now,
- 6:44immediately after that, and you'll see why I
- 6:47think the word refrain and desist would have
- 6:49been a better translation. Only because it clarifies
- 6:53verse 2. So as to live for the rest of the time
- 6:58in the flesh, no longer for human passion, but
- 7:02for the will of God. Now, that doesn't sound
- 7:05like good English to me. So I'm going to... I'm
- 7:08going to say it in my English, I think. It's
- 7:11more like this. So as to live the remainder of
- 7:15our life in the body, no longer for our sensual
- 7:20and human passions, but solely for the will of
- 7:23God. In other words, if I have refrained and
- 7:28desist from sin, then I will live my life, the
- 7:32rest of my life, in this broken, sinful body.
- 7:37For God's will, not mine. That's what this means.
- 7:42Makes a lot more sense though, doesn't it? See,
- 7:44if we have ceased from sin, then there's no need
- 7:47for me to be here. So, for the time that is past
- 7:51suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to
- 7:54do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness,
- 7:57orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry.
- 8:01What he's saying here is, if this is the way
- 8:04a believer should live, And this is the way non
- 8:08-believers live. There's a clear contrast between
- 8:11the two. And as a steward, we should live this
- 8:14way. And we're going to see that in a minute.
- 8:17With respect to this, they are surprised when
- 8:20you don't join them in the same flood of debauchery
- 8:23and they malign you for it. So in other words,
- 8:26because you're not willing to partake in their
- 8:29junk, they actually get angry at you and start
- 8:33talking bad about you. Now, For this is why the
- 8:38gospel was preached even to those who are dead,
- 8:41that though judged in the flesh the way people
- 8:45are, they might live in the spirit the way God
- 8:48does. And this is what it means. That the very
- 8:51way of life that they were living, which was
- 8:54a dead life, God preached the gospel to them.
- 8:58And as a result, some of them have become alive
- 9:01in which now they can live the way God intended
- 9:04for them to live. That's good stewardship. Now,
- 9:07the end of all things is at hand. Therefore,
- 9:11be self -controlled, sober -minded for the sake
- 9:14of your prayers. Above all, keep loving one another
- 9:19earnestly since love covers a multitude of sins.
- 9:22Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.
- 9:26Why? As each has received a gift, use it to serve
- 9:32one another as good stewards of God's very grace.
- 9:36Now, here's what this means. I don't know why,
- 9:40again, in the English, they have a tendency to
- 9:42put, you know, our English language doesn't do
- 9:44well sometimes. And I've talked about that quite
- 9:46a bit. And here's why. This term gift here in
- 9:50verse 10 means the gift one receives without
- 9:53merit. What gift have we received without merit?
- 9:57Salvation. Salvation is the gift we received
- 9:59without merit. Now, this makes a lot more sense,
- 10:02especially when you go to Hebrews and you read
- 10:04that all the spiritual gifts were given for one
- 10:06purpose, to preach the gospel. As each has received
- 10:10the gift one receives without merit, meaning
- 10:13salvation, use it to serve one another as good
- 10:17stewards of God's varied grace, of God's manifold
- 10:22and diverse grace. What do we use? See, when
- 10:26you're born again and you're saved, you're driven
- 10:29to serve. Salvation is not just your way to heaven.
- 10:33Salvation is the means to love one another. That's
- 10:36what it says here. As each has received the gift
- 10:39one receives without merit, salvation, that's
- 10:42what that means, use it to serve one another
- 10:46as good stewards of God's varied, manifold, diverse
- 10:51grace. We should use the gift of salvation we
- 10:55have to speak as one who speaks oracles of God.
- 10:58It says we are to serve as one who serves by
- 11:03the strength that God supplies. In order that
- 11:06in everything God may be glorified through Jesus
- 11:09Christ. Salvation is our motivation to be good
- 11:13stewards. Being good stewards of salvation is
- 11:17the responsibility of the steward. stewards don't
- 11:24need a thank you to care for and manage God's
- 11:27things. So in our society today, we have a tendency
- 11:31to always want that, that a boy. Thank you. You
- 11:34know, like God, God, I really don't think you're
- 11:36being nice to me. You should thank me for obeying
- 11:39you. You know, I mean, after all, it's the least
- 11:43you can do. And Jesus handles this pretty clearly.
- 11:47In Luke 17. But look what it says in 1 Corinthians
- 11:504. Moreover, it is required of stewards to be
- 11:55found faithful. It's not an option. Stewardship
- 12:00is not an option. It's required that a steward
- 12:03is found faithful with God's stuff. Found faithful
- 12:06with God's salvation. Found faithful being good
- 12:09stewards of our lives as we live amongst each
- 12:13other. Being good stewards of his things. It's
- 12:16not an option. And so what we see here is that
- 12:20there comes this moment where, you know, God
- 12:22should thank me for doing good stuff. I mean,
- 12:25everybody deserves a thank you. Look what Jesus
- 12:28says. It's quite interesting how he brings them
- 12:32to this point. So I'm going to share the whole
- 12:34thing with you. It's Luke 17, 1 through 10. And
- 12:38so there's this stuff happening among the disciples.
- 12:42And then Jesus kind of calls them out on their
- 12:44stuff. And what you're going to see is quite
- 12:48shocking. And he said to his disciples, temptations
- 12:52to sin are sure to come. In other words, you
- 12:55are going to screw up. It's going to come. But
- 12:59woe to the one whom they come. It would be better
- 13:04for him if a millstone were hung around his neck
- 13:07and he was cast into the sea than that he should
- 13:11cause one of these little ones to stumble or
- 13:13one of these little ones to sin. So what he's
- 13:16saying, hey, you're going to mess up. But when
- 13:20you mess up, don't mess up and cause them to
- 13:23mess up. That's what he's saying. It's not going
- 13:25to be good for you. Not a good idea. Immediately
- 13:28after that in verse 3, he says, pay attention
- 13:30to yourselves. Manage yourselves. If your brother
- 13:35sins, rebuke him. And if he repents, forgive
- 13:38him. You can see, you're going to mess up. Here's
- 13:42the way a steward should live. Pay attention
- 13:44to yourself. Don't cause little ones to sin.
- 13:47If your brother sins, rebuke him for it. If he
- 13:50repents, forgive him for it. And if he sins against
- 13:52you seven times in a day and turns to you seven
- 13:56times saying, I repent, you must forgive him.
- 13:58These are options. These are commandments. You
- 14:03have an obligation as a steward of God and his
- 14:06ways to live in this way. And this is how. And
- 14:10what's interesting is in verse 5. And the apostles
- 14:13said to the Lord, increase our faith. Now, this
- 14:16is what they're saying. I kind of find it weird
- 14:21in the statement, but this is what they're saying.
- 14:23Lord, we can't avoid this if we don't have more
- 14:28faith to do it. Like, give me more faith and
- 14:30I'll sin less. You know what? I want more of
- 14:33your grace because if I get more grace, I'll
- 14:34sin less. So if I sin, it's okay because I just
- 14:37need more of your grace. So please. Increase
- 14:40my faith so I don't sin as much. And the Lord
- 14:44said, if you had faith like a grain of the mustard
- 14:46seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, be
- 14:49uprooted and planted in the sea and it would
- 14:50obey you. It's like, if you were obedient, if
- 14:55you really had faith, you could do these things.
- 14:58Will any of you who has a servant plowing and
- 15:01keeping sheep say to him, when he has come in
- 15:05from the field, come at once and recline at the
- 15:07table. So here's the point. If you're outside,
- 15:10you're farming, hot day, 112, that's Arizona.
- 15:15And you come in and the master goes, hey, come
- 15:19on in. You worked hard. Come and sit at my table
- 15:22and I'll feed you. Don't worry, I'll cook the
- 15:24dinner. What Jesus is doing here, he's being
- 15:27facetious. He's saying, you're not going to tell
- 15:29your slave to come in and recline at the table
- 15:32after he was doing what you had required him
- 15:34to do. Will the master, will he not rather say
- 15:39to him, prepare supper for me, dress properly,
- 15:43serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward,
- 15:46you will eat and drink. So this is what he's
- 15:48saying. I'm not going to invite my slave to come
- 15:51in and recline at my table. I'm going to tell
- 15:53him when he gets done working outside, now go
- 15:57in, get a shower, put on some clean clothes,
- 15:59cook my dinner. When I'm done eating, you can
- 16:02have the leftovers. That's exactly what this
- 16:04means. You're like, well, that's kind of harsh.
- 16:08No, he feeds his slave. He gives him roof over
- 16:12his head, takes good care of him. He doesn't
- 16:15have to worry for anything. And now you're supposed
- 16:17to be like hanging out. Like, that's not how
- 16:20this works. That's what Jesus is saying. Now,
- 16:23how many of you ever really read Luke 17, one
- 16:28through 11? Really saw what Jesus was teaching
- 16:30here. So verse 9, does he thank the servant because
- 16:36he did what he was commanded? Does the master
- 16:38go, hey, thank you for doing what I told you
- 16:41to do? No. Look at the response. So you also,
- 16:46this is what he's saying. So you also, when you
- 16:49have done all that you were commanded, say, we
- 16:52are unworthy servants. We have only done what
- 16:57was our duty. Do you get the attitude of the
- 17:01steward here? The attitude of the slave? No,
- 17:04master. It was our duty to do that. That's what
- 17:07you required of us. That's what he's saying here.
- 17:10So a steward is one who doesn't need a thank
- 17:14you, but does what his master has commanded him
- 17:19to do. Lastly, we don't go around doing service
- 17:23in God's house. Or serving God because we expect
- 17:27God to say thank you. So that whole well done
- 17:30my good and faithful servant. He actually talks
- 17:32about this in chapter 19. And what you're going
- 17:35to see is. He says well done my good and faithful
- 17:38servant. Because the servant obeyed the master.
- 17:42That's the important thing here. So a steward
- 17:46is busy caring and growing and managing the master's
- 17:50things. This is a very important principle. That
- 17:53doesn't mean as a father that our heavenly father
- 17:56doesn't come to us and thank us for what we do.
- 17:58But as a master, he doesn't need to thank me.
- 18:00It's my duty. And it's my aim to please my master.
- 18:05Matthew 7, 21 says it this way. Not everyone
- 18:08who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom
- 18:11of heaven, but the one who does the will of my
- 18:13father who is in heaven. Luke 19, 11 through
- 18:1627. And as they heard these things, he proceeded
- 18:19to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem
- 18:22and because they supposed that the kingdom of
- 18:25God was to appear immediately. In other words,
- 18:27Lord, you are to do what we expect you to do.
- 18:32We want the kingdom now. We want it now. You
- 18:37are our servant. Though he did come to serve,
- 18:41not to be served. Look what it says here. And
- 18:45he said, therefore, a nobleman went into a far
- 18:48country to receive for himself a kingdom and
- 18:50then return. Doesn't that sound familiar? Where
- 18:53did Jesus leave to come and receive a kingdom
- 18:56and then to return back? His throne. That's the
- 18:59nobleman. Jesus is the nobleman. Calling 10 of
- 19:03his servants, he gave them 10 minas and said
- 19:07to them, engage in business until I come. In
- 19:09other words, here, a mina is a very valuable.
- 19:13Coin. It's very expensive. It's not cheap. He
- 19:17gives them minas and their job is to engage in
- 19:21business until he comes back. So he doesn't give
- 19:25them money to go dig and hide it. Doesn't give
- 19:27them money for them to go enjoy. He gives them
- 19:30money so that he can get a return. Watch. Now,
- 19:34as he's done this with his slaves, here, go do
- 19:38business for me. The citizens, of his country,
- 19:43hated him and sent a delegation after him saying,
- 19:48we do not want this man to reign over us. Jesus
- 19:52came to his own, but his own did not receive
- 19:54him. See, Jesus was of the kingdom of Israel
- 19:58and he left the kingdom to go find a kingdom,
- 20:03to go get a kingdom or receive a kingdom. And
- 20:05then to return in the kingdom he's talking about
- 20:08is the kingdom of heaven. A kingdom that's not
- 20:11of this world. And look what he says here. And
- 20:14when he returned, having received the kingdom,
- 20:18he ordered his servants to whom he had given
- 20:20the money to be called to him. So he told the
- 20:24servants to come here. That he might know what
- 20:28they had gained by doing business. In other words,
- 20:31what did you get from me? Look what he says.
- 20:34The first came before him and saying, Lord, you're
- 20:37Mina. has made 10 minas more. And he said to
- 20:41him, well done, good servant, because you have
- 20:44been faithful in the very little, you shall have
- 20:46authority over 10 cities. And the second time,
- 20:51the second came, sorry, saying, Lord, your mina
- 20:54has made five minas. And he said to him, you
- 20:57are to be over five cities. But another came
- 21:00saying, Lord, here's your mina. I have kept,
- 21:05I have kept. I've kept it laid away in a handkerchief.
- 21:09This is what he did. Took the coin, rolled it
- 21:12up in a handkerchief, stuck it in his pocket.
- 21:14It was like, my master, if I lose this thing,
- 21:18I'm going to die. And it's exactly what this
- 21:21guy says. Look what he says in verse 21. For
- 21:23I was afraid of you because you are a severe
- 21:27man. You take what you did not deposit and you
- 21:32reap what you did not sow. And he said to him,
- 21:35I will condemn you with your own words. This
- 21:36is what the master says to the servant, you wicked
- 21:39servant. You knew that I was a severe man, taking
- 21:43what I did not deposit and reaping what I did
- 21:46not sow. This is what he means. He knew, if you
- 21:51were to look at this from the picture of Jesus
- 21:53being the nobleman, that Jesus is severe. So
- 21:56I'm going to make this real clear for you. Jesus
- 21:58is a severe God. He is not playing. The little
- 22:02sissified Jesus that all these preachers talk
- 22:04about is not the Jesus who rules and reigns as
- 22:08king. He is severe when he needs to be, and he
- 22:11is loving when he has to be, and he's both at
- 22:13the same time all the time. That's the God we
- 22:15serve. He loves deeply his people, and he punishes
- 22:18wickedness by wrath. That's severity. Yes, he
- 22:22will see as severe. Why then did you not put
- 22:24my money in the bank? And am I coming? I might
- 22:28have collected it with interest. Why, when I
- 22:31gave you some of the most valuable things that
- 22:33I own, why did you not get a return? So I'm going
- 22:37to make it clear with you. This is what Jesus
- 22:38is saying. I've given you the gospel. Why haven't
- 22:42you brought me a return in the gospel? Why haven't
- 22:45you gone out and preached the gospel? And then
- 22:48there be a return back to me because of that.
- 22:52Or do you just keep it wrapped up in a handkerchief
- 22:55in the back of your throat? Do you not tell anybody
- 22:58about Jesus because you're afraid they might
- 23:01be offended or are you afraid that they may look
- 23:05at you as being too churchy? And then he says,
- 23:09and he said to those who stood by, take the mina
- 23:12from him, give it to the one who has 10 minas.
- 23:16Notice, he doesn't give it to the one who's five
- 23:18minas. He gives it to the one who gets the most
- 23:20interest. And then this is what he says. And
- 23:23they said to him, Lord, he has 10 minas. That's
- 23:26not fair. Why should he get the mina if he has
- 23:2910 minas? And he says, I tell you that everyone
- 23:32who has, more will be given. And from the one
- 23:35who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
- 23:39Do you get that? The steward that stewards and
- 23:42does what I commanded him to do will be given
- 23:45much because I can trust he will do much. But
- 23:48the one who does nothing, he loses everything.
- 23:52Now, as for these enemies of mine, who did not
- 23:56want me to reign over them, bring them here and
- 24:00slaughter them before me. Do you hear that? God
- 24:04is a severe God. Because God will slaughter every
- 24:08single person that has rejected him as king.
- 24:12You don't want me, you die. Period. There is
- 24:16no simple way to say it. He's made it very clear
- 24:18here. So what is the steward's responsibility?
- 24:21It is the steward's duty to do the will of the
- 24:24master. to freely share what the master has given
- 24:28and be found busy caring, growing, and managing
- 24:31the master's things. That's the point of these
- 24:34three scriptures. What kind of steward are you?
- 24:37Are we loving God? Are we loving his word? Are
- 24:41we loving his ways? And are we loving his things?
- 24:44And there are two very valuable things that God
- 24:47has given. He's given his gospel and he's given
- 24:49his people. How are you stewarding the gospel
- 24:52and how are you stewarding each other? That's
- 24:55what he's talking about. Okay? So God is serious
- 24:58when it comes to stewardship. Many principles
- 25:00to learn. Learn this one. When you can do this
- 25:03one, you can do many other things. Okay? Father,
- 25:08I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness
- 25:10and your goodness. We praise you. You are God.
- 25:13We are not. We thank you that you loved us first.
- 25:18and that you have called us and command us to
- 25:20steward all that you've given us for your glory.
- 25:23In Jesus' name, amen.
