- 0:01Welcome to Rick and That Michelle Chick, the weekly
- 0:05podcast where your hosts, Rick and Michelle, confidently dive
- 0:10into topics they know absolutely nothing about and somehow make
- 0:15it sound legit. They're not experts.
- 0:17They're not qualified. Honestly, they barely googled
- 0:20it. So grab a drink, lower your
- 0:23expectations, and let's pretend this counts as content.
- 0:28So buckle up. Facts are optional, but the
- 0:31bullshit? That's premium grade.
- 0:34This is Rick and that Michelle chick.
- 0:41So at the end of a last episode, we ran out of time for me to
- 0:46tell my stealing story. Yeah, that I remembered.
- 0:50So a few episodes ago, I had told the story about me stealing
- 0:55when I was 7 and I had said that I never stole after that.
- 0:59And then I remembered, whoopsie. I I think I kind of stole, but I
- 1:05don't know. OK, I'll tell the story and then
- 1:07you can tell me because I kind of had permission.
- 1:12OK so I don't know if this is technically stealing but I mean
- 1:18the other part of the story probably it might be I don't
- 1:20know. Anyway, so it was the second
- 1:22time that my parents had been divorced from each other and I
- 1:26had just turned 16 and I went to go visit my dad.
- 1:30And keep in mind he's with his new girlfriend and her new
- 1:33family who her kids are perfect. And my brother and I are just
- 1:38basically we only get to see him when he wants to see us at this
- 1:41point in time. So and I just turned 16 so this
- 1:45is around like December ish. It's probably like Christmas
- 1:48break, I'm guessing. I don't remember.
- 1:50I don't remember those details. But anyway, because I had just
- 1:55turned 16, they offered me the car to take the car.
- 1:58Like, hey, if you want to go take the car to go to see your
- 2:01friends, blah, blah, blah. And I'm like, heck yeah.
- 2:05Like what kid doesn't want to take the car?
- 2:08The only thing is I left out the part that I didn't have my
- 2:11license yet, that I still only had my permit and I didn't tell
- 2:15them that I only had my permit, so I just let them believe of.
- 2:20Course my. License I didn't correct them
- 2:23because again, what kid is going to be like, no, no, I only have
- 2:26my permit. The, the dumb part is this is
- 2:29where the dumb part, and I probably would not have gotten
- 2:31caught if I had not stayed out all night because of a boy.
- 2:36And if I would have just gone out, had some fun and came back
- 2:40and I, they probably would have never ever have found out.
- 2:44I probably would have never gotten caught because of course,
- 2:46if when I didn't come home at the time, they told me to come
- 2:48home. Then they call my mom.
- 2:50My mom tells them I don't have my license.
- 2:52And so they, it all goes to shit from that point.
- 2:54So, so yeah. So I don't know that's
- 2:57technically stealing. They didn't have permission, but
- 3:00I also didn't have my license. But I would as a typical
- 3:04teenager, I, it would take my mom's car and I did have my
- 3:09license at this point in time. I would sneak out of the house.
- 3:14And the tricky part is that her bedroom window was here and the
- 3:18driveway went back around by her bedroom window.
- 3:21And so I would, luckily the car was at 5 speed and so I would
- 3:26put it in neutral and I would push it right.
- 3:29I would push it back around to the side of the house and that's
- 3:33when I would like start it up and take off.
- 3:35Now the tricky part was trying to get back home because you're
- 3:38kind of going, the driver was, it was a little slant.
- 3:42It wasn't like a big, big heel, but it was a little slant.
- 3:45So I was. Going to drive.
- 3:48I mean, I couldn't push it. There was one point I tried and
- 3:51I could not. So I would have to drive like
- 3:53super slow. Like luckily the car was not
- 3:56noisy or anything to drive super slow and pull back around and
- 4:00park it. And I probably would have gotten
- 4:03away with this. She probably would have never
- 4:05found out if it hadn't been for my cat.
- 4:08My cat one night woke her up. I don't know what was wrong with
- 4:11my cat. My cat woke her up and then
- 4:13that's when she heard me like crawling in my bedroom window,
- 4:17kind of like crawl in and out of the bedroom window like, you
- 4:20know, like any, any, any teenager during that point in
- 4:24time. Oh, and I would make sure that I
- 4:25turn off the headlights as I got to a certain point.
- 4:29I don't want to wake her up like.
- 4:31So I don't know if that all constitutes as stealing or just
- 4:35teenage behavior. Again, this was the second time
- 4:39my parents have been divorced and things were not great at
- 4:41home. I mean, that doesn't excuse this
- 4:44stuff I did, but I think it was a teenager.
- 4:47I think a bunch of that is the, you know, teenage passages,
- 4:51basically things that get when you, you know, when you tell me
- 4:54stories like that, that's the whole reason why I never wanted
- 4:57to have a girl like a baby girl, because my sisters, my sister,
- 5:01my sisters Robin, Robin and Wanda, Wanda was my adopted
- 5:05sister. Did they sneak out?
- 5:06To They snuck out all the time to meet their boyfriends at the
- 5:09golf course. And I was hearing, you know,
- 5:11hearing how they lost their virginity and all these
- 5:13different things. And I'm like, and I'm like,
- 5:15Nope, Nope. If I have, I'm never gonna have
- 5:17a girl. So Nope.
- 5:19And of course boys are just as capable of doing stupid stuff as
- 5:23well. But for some reason in my 15
- 5:25year old brain I was like Nope, not gonna.
- 5:28Well, because you're the guy. I mean, it's kind of the same
- 5:31way with Jay and our daughter Shaylee.
- 5:33I I, he let our three sons get away with a little bit more than
- 5:37he does her. And I think that's because,
- 5:41like, you as men know what those boys are thinking or planning or
- 5:46doing. And so it's a little bit
- 5:48different because you are the guys and you've been there, you
- 5:53know, the stuff that you've tried to do or whatever with
- 5:56girls. So, yeah.
- 5:57So that's why I think it's like. I, I think it's interesting from
- 6:02from Logan's standpoint, because Logan and I have a great
- 6:05relationship, yes, but even through his teen years.
- 6:09And so what's so funny is all boys, all boys go through a
- 6:12period to where they talk about it a lot.
- 6:16Yes, yeah. They talk about it a lot.
- 6:18And then suddenly they quit talking about it.
- 6:21And so I remember driving Logan home to Lewiston one time and he
- 6:25didn't talk about it at all. And I went, oh, So what
- 6:29happened? He goes, what do you mean, Judd?
- 6:32What do you mean what happened? And I go, I go, well, something
- 6:36happened. Something happened.
- 6:37He goes, no, it didn't. I'm like, yeah, it did.
- 6:40And I and then, and then it's so funny.
- 6:42When I was when I was 27 years old, I'd always made the joke
- 6:45that I was going to high 5 my kid, blah, blah, blah.
- 6:47When that happened. And no, did you?
- 6:49No, no, no, I, I realized that it didn't matter if if I had a
- 6:53boy or a girl, I suddenly went into dad mode and I said, you
- 6:57better have treated her right. You better have more.
- 6:59I mean, I did the whole dad gauntlet, which of course, like
- 7:0315 years before that I was like, oh, I my son, my son, yeah, you
- 7:08know what I'm saying? No, dude.
- 7:10No, no. Yes, a very dude, my son.
- 7:13Yes, the very dude thing. And then I discovered that no, I
- 7:16immediately became the dad. I mean, which is good at.
- 7:21Least you didn't why was oh, and I chastised him and and and like
- 7:26you better, like, you know, whatever, whatever it was,
- 7:28whatever, whatever was going on so.
- 7:29Nonsense that we say to them that, my gosh, they're not
- 7:33listening. I look, I look, I look back at
- 7:36all the things that I used to think or the way I used to act.
- 7:39I mean, it's actually quite embarrassing when I look back
- 7:42and some of the things I, I, I've said in my lifetime and you
- 7:45can't hold it against you because it's just age.
- 7:47But no, right, it's just learning and but I admit at
- 7:50least you progress and move forward now.
- 7:52At least you're not. I would like, I'd like to think
- 7:54so. So, yeah.
- 7:55But I was very much, very much thought I was going to high 5 at
- 7:58that, that situation. And no, I, I no, but I, but I
- 8:01knew, I knew when it happened because he quit.
- 8:04It was, there was, there was no jokes about it.
- 8:06There was no more, you know, I'm saying there was no more 1213
- 8:10year old potty humor or anything about it was like suddenly it
- 8:13was like, Nope, not going to discuss it.
- 8:17And no, and I don't blame him. I mean, it's like I don't want,
- 8:21I mean, even if we have a great relationship, I don't, I don't
- 8:24want to know. No, like I don't.
- 8:27Know I don't want to know it's kind of like it's almost like
- 8:28your parents it's almost like. That's what I was going to say.
- 8:31It's on the arcade, but it's on the flip side.
- 8:33Yeah, it's on the flip side. It's like, I don't want, you
- 8:35know. And I remember it was so funny,
- 8:37Logan, he was an adult by this time, but he was living in the
- 8:40garage and. And some strange girl shows up
- 8:45and she's, and she's there for 20 minutes and then she leaves.
- 8:51Oh. 20 minutes is quick. I know.
- 8:54Well, it's probably longer than that, probably an hour.
- 8:57I mean, it was, I mean, whatever it was, but I was going to say I
- 9:00quickly, I quickly learned that Logan was going through a phase,
- 9:05you know, so yeah, that phase, that phase and and he it was
- 9:09tender. It was tender.
- 9:10I. Mean.
- 9:12No, no, I well, yeah. I mean, he's he's an adult, but
- 9:15but so, yeah, little, little things like that.
- 9:18But, but I was thinking about the teenage, the teenage stuff
- 9:22because I know they're, I mean, or at least how my family looks
- 9:29at it or, or other people have looked at it.
- 9:31I mean, I, I can't tell a lion say I'm not concerned about what
- 9:35people think of me because that is I, I am.
- 9:38So there's, there's, so there's things I, there's stories I
- 9:41don't tell or I don't share because for me, for me, they're
- 9:45embarrassing. And, and I am so far from, I am
- 9:48so far from perfection. It's crazy, but and so those are
- 9:53those are things that I, I mean, do you, do you tell?
- 9:57I mean, I, I guess a better way to say this, Michelle does does
- 10:01Does anybody know every single secret that you have?
- 10:05No, of course not. Right, Right.
- 10:06I. Mean there right, right there
- 10:08are there are things that I'm like you don't that's going to
- 10:10the grave with me that's going that's going to the grave with
- 10:13me. But going back to your your
- 10:16stealing story yeah, I got I I I did get I actually did get
- 10:20arrested in in I was probably in June.
- 10:23I mean, I was probably a freshman or a sophomore and
- 10:26you're pretty. Young you're what?
- 10:27What's 1315? What?
- 10:291415 I mean, you know, stupid, stupid kids stuff.
- 10:32And and I did get arrested and my foster mom had to pick me up
- 10:34at the picked me up at the Clarkson Police Department.
- 10:38I remember just bawling because I mean, no, I mean I deserve, I
- 10:42deserve what I got. And and So what happened was it
- 10:47it goes on your record. It does go on your record.
- 10:50Even as a juvenile. But it's expunged when you if
- 10:53you. So if you don't commit another
- 10:54crime or right, if you don't commit another crime, it's
- 10:58expunged 18. So I don't have a criminal.
- 11:00I don't have a criminal record, Right.
- 11:02It's gone. It's gone, you know, or at least
- 11:04maybe that's where they tell kids to scare the crap out of
- 11:06them. Maybe that.
- 11:07Maybe. I mean, all I all I know is,
- 11:11yeah. I mean, who knows?
- 11:12Maybe I didn't even get arrested.
- 11:13I don't know. I just know I got the least.
- 11:15I mean, you look back. No, I was sorry.
- 11:17Or maybe there weren't any charges.
- 11:19Maybe they just like arrested cause especially back then they
- 11:23would just pretend yes like they would go through the motions.
- 11:26It's no different than back then for us, if we would have been
- 11:29caught with alcohol, they would have just take or made us dump
- 11:34it out right there in front of them.
- 11:35I mean, if they took it, they probably took it for themselves
- 11:37and drank it later is what happened.
- 11:39Yeah. You know, it's not like now
- 11:41where you get a minor in possession and it's a bigger
- 11:43deal now. I mean it was completely
- 11:45different time back then. I, I look at everything.
- 11:48Well, The funny thing is it's, it's interesting that you know,
- 11:51cuz I, you know, and, and I just want to clarify, once I
- 11:54officially got busted, that was it Like the the.
- 11:57Crimes. The crime spree was over.
- 12:00I, I, I've never done it since. No, but it was interesting up
- 12:04until that point. I probably did it a couple times
- 12:07and got away with it. Hence the reason, you know, I
- 12:11mean, like, I think that happened.
- 12:12I think that happens to kids. Oh definitely.
- 12:14I think we keep doing it until we get caught or.
- 12:18Right. And then and then the kids.
- 12:20Get scratched, you know, whatever it is, right And.
- 12:22Then and then you do have two choices.
- 12:24You can continue that behavior or you're like, Nope, that's not
- 12:27right, you know, And so I mean, so luckily I was like, Nope, not
- 12:30going to do that. Get and interesting enough, I
- 12:33think the you know me because it's like, I do care.
- 12:36I I'm not going to lie, I do care what people think about me.
- 12:39And I remember being in history class and some guy goes, he
- 12:42goes, Virgil, I think I saw you in the back of a police car over
- 12:45the weekend. So I'm I'm even getting read.
- 12:50I'm getting, I'm read and embarrassed because.
- 12:52And so it was like, and so to have this kid in high school.
- 12:55Right of all times and. Someone, what are the odds?
- 12:58I mean, what's the odds? And, and of course, Clarkson is
- 13:01a very small town. It's 6000 people.
- 13:03So it's not like, yeah, it is possible, but I just can be
- 13:07telling this to this kid in history.
- 13:08Class calling everyone. I know, I don't know, he was the
- 13:11only one who ever mentioned it and I told him, no, it wasn't
- 13:14me. But he goes because I think I
- 13:18saw you in the back of a police car.
- 13:21So and, and then I mean, like you and I've talked about, I
- 13:27went through this phase where I was going to church and I was, I
- 13:31was, I was the youth group president, I was the junior
- 13:35Deacon. I mean, I was, you know, I was
- 13:39holy rolling for a while. So, and you know, and I look
- 13:43back at maybe that I mean, it was just too over, too over the
- 13:46top in that particular since I mean, I've gone, I've done all
- 13:49the phases in like, like. Your pendulum like swings.
- 13:53Oh yes, Oh, yes, Oh yes, yes, Oh, yes, and yes.
- 13:59And it really was like you talked about your parents and,
- 14:05and all that and I talked to my siblings like I wore that as a
- 14:09badge of honor with arrogance, I guess in, in sense of saying I'm
- 14:15not going to turn out like them, you know, and, and, and, and I,
- 14:20I look back now like they're, they're good people.
- 14:22My, my, my mom. They had their problems, but
- 14:24they were good people. But but for me, I, I really was
- 14:29arrogant in turn in that, in that thinking of like, well, I'm
- 14:31better than I mean, I'm better than they are, which I'm not by
- 14:35any means anybody. Everybody has their failures,
- 14:38everybody has their weaknesses, everybody has their vices,
- 14:41including, yeah, including me. And so but, but, but at that
- 14:46age, I was like, no, I am a straight, straight as a board at
- 14:51after that, after that run in right.
- 14:54I, I mean, I flipped the other way for a few years and, and so,
- 14:59yeah, but I will say I don't know about you, Michelle.
- 15:02So having been poor and making so my first salary, what, at the
- 15:08radio station was $600 a month. So my, my, my studio apartment
- 15:13was what, 150, you know, and my car payment was like 133 bucks.
- 15:17I had a blue, blue Honda 82 Honda Accord.
- 15:20Well, guess what? I couldn't pay insurance.
- 15:24So I went years like years like I want to say 7.
- 15:30Seven years wasn't in place, was it that you had to?
- 15:33Have it, it did, it got past wall.
- 15:34It did. So, so, so when I first got, so
- 15:37it was interesting when I first got the car, when I first got
- 15:40the car, Idaho didn't require, didn't require insurance or at
- 15:45least a proof proof of insurance.
- 15:47So I could sketch, I could skirt it that way.
- 15:50And I, you know, and I could skirt it that way, but
- 15:53Washington had just passed the law about having insurance and I
- 15:57couldn't afford it. And so, and then of course, just
- 16:00to show you what a criminal, he's a criminal.
- 16:03He's a criminal. So what happens is you're making
- 16:06a car loan payment, right? Well, if you don't put insurance
- 16:09on your car, guess what the bank does?
- 16:10They find out. They put it out.
- 16:12For you now. They don't put liability on,
- 16:16They don't put liability on, but they put collision and casualty
- 16:19or something like that. Right, They have to protect
- 16:21their investment. Their investment so anyway, so I
- 16:24bought this car from key bank and I had it for three years and
- 16:28of course that is added to the bill of the car loan Yep and so
- 16:32my this is just to show you just what a stupid kid I was I mean
- 16:35I'm I'm an adult I this all belongs on you know I'm an adult
- 16:38shame on me. So what happened was I got to
- 16:41the end of the payment book, right?
- 16:43And guess what I did Well, they didn't send me a new book.
- 16:47So guess what? I must have paid my car.
- 16:49I must have paid my car off. So, so I'm working.
- 16:53So I'm working in Idaho Falls, ID and I'm working at 2 radio
- 16:56stations. I'm working I'm working at Z1O3
- 16:59and I'm also working at K-96. Now because of my work schedule
- 17:02was so erratic, the repo guy couldn't find me I.
- 17:07Was going to say did you come out from work and your car was
- 17:11gone? Yes, yes.
- 17:13And so one night I, I, I'm leaving the night at midnight
- 17:16at, I'm working at K-96 in Idaho Falls and the car's gone.
- 17:21And so, so I had, so I called the police.
- 17:24They're like, I'm sitting there going up.
- 17:26Sorry Sir, this is legitimately it's been repoed.
- 17:30They knew I didn't know that the police.
- 17:31Yeah, they call ahead. They Yep, Yep, they Yep, they
- 17:35call ahead and well, apparently because of the insurance they
- 17:38had added for those. So the, the, the car loan was
- 17:40for three years, but they had added that insurance in there.
- 17:44So I technically owed another, I owed another year on the car.
- 17:48So, so anyway, it was a big, it was a big, it was a big mess.
- 17:52And I got, I got of course, this and this is back when I was
- 17:55making 5 bucks an hour. So I wasn't making money and so
- 17:59I had to get the car. Paycheck to paycheck trying to
- 18:01live. So I had to get the car out of,
- 18:03I got the car out of Hawk. On one hand, I thought about
- 18:06just letting it go, like give up the fight, just let him take the
- 18:09car because this guy had like this this Saab or whatever that
- 18:14he was going to sell me for like 600 bucks or something like
- 18:16that. And I thought that'll get me
- 18:17back, that'll give me, I'd already made the decision.
- 18:19I was, I was living in Idaho Falls, but I made the decision
- 18:21that this was not going well for me and I need to just get back
- 18:23to the valley. And so, and then I thought, you
- 18:26know what? So what'd you do?
- 18:29So I got the car out of Hock and it cost like 600 and some
- 18:34dollars, which was basically my rents that I needed.
- 18:37And so I skipped town. I packed up my stuff and I
- 18:41skipped town out of the, out of the apartment I was living in.
- 18:44And there was a, there was, there was a, Oh my gosh, there
- 18:48was a, a, what is it a lease? I had a lease.
- 18:50I was. Going to say, did you have a
- 18:51lease? Oh yeah, I.
- 18:52Broke it. I didn't and I didn't give him
- 18:54notice. I just left in the middle of the
- 18:55night. I'm a criminal.
- 18:57I'm just like, I'm just, I am just a criminal.
- 19:01Did you get dinged for that bill?
- 19:03No, never, never. They no, they never found me.
- 19:06For cutting your lease short, usually you have to pay the
- 19:08difference. And I, they never, I think they
- 19:11just wrote it off as some stupid kid.
- 19:13I was young, I was dumb, you know, different things.
- 19:15But back in the days. So if you name it, if you name
- 19:18it I, I have, I have done it, you know, I mean things that
- 19:22things that I have done. And, and I remember when I went
- 19:27to College in Boise, I was in Nampa.
- 19:29And again, these are just, I just didn't have any money.
- 19:32I mean, it wasn't about being lazy.
- 19:34It was just, I don't have any money.
- 19:35And I remember taking my 73 Capri out and I was depressed on
- 19:40one day. And so I'm driving around Nampa,
- 19:43ID and, and I'm listening to Poison.
- 19:47The song is Fallen Angel because I remember the exact moment and
- 19:52the sun got in my eyes and I ran a stop sign and I plowed into a
- 19:57Cadillac Ltd that was going the other direction.
- 20:01Oh no. Yeah, so wrecked into him,
- 20:04smashed up the the the 73 Capri. This was another time when I've
- 20:07left town, you had to leave town in a hurry.
- 20:11So I went to court for it and and they find me whatever in a
- 20:16tentative driving or something because the sun was in my eyes.
- 20:18I mean, but no insurance. Now at the time, Idaho didn't
- 20:23require liability insurance. They didn't ticket me for that.
- 20:26The guy that I hit, guess what he also didn't have?
- 20:29He didn't have insurance. No, he didn't have insurance
- 20:31either. The Cadillac guy did not have
- 20:33insurance. He's else, you know, he didn't
- 20:34have insurance either. So it was so funny was the the
- 20:38guys judge was like, hey, I'm going to cite whatever whatever
- 20:41it was and that you know, and So what happened was and then he
- 20:44goes, you guys have to settle your cars yourself.
- 20:47And So what happened was, Oh yeah, here's my address, which
- 20:51of course, like was the was the dormitory at the college, but I
- 20:54was bailing town. I'm like.
- 20:55It's like Pizza Hut. I used to give guys the number
- 20:58to people. Yeah.
- 20:58There you go. I was like, I'm I'm yeah, I was
- 21:01already, I was already wiped out.
- 21:03I had no, I had no money left. And so funny as my dad back in
- 21:07Lewiston, the car was, the car was drivable, but the, the, the
- 21:11radiator had gotten smashed. So my dad had sent me this Ford
- 21:16Pinto radiator in the mail. The radiator came in the mail,
- 21:21came in the mail. And so my buddies in college got
- 21:24underneath the car and we took out the old radiator and put in
- 21:26the new radiator. And I made it, I was able to
- 21:28make it back to the LC Valley. But I, I, I skirted town, then I
- 21:32skirted town the second time in my, in my youth.
- 21:36So yeah, I'm a criminal a lot. Look, I'm rather embarrassed by
- 21:41a lot of those things, you know, I don't ever.
- 21:43Talk, I mean. I don't talk about them.
- 21:45It's not to me, it's not like that's that's not horrible.
- 21:50That's just especially for us growing up poor, like you see
- 21:55that all the time. People that are have insecure
- 21:59lives growing up, whether it's food insecurities, housing
- 22:02insecurities, and we're just trying like we've talked about
- 22:05before, we're not ahead of the game from the start.
- 22:09And so we're all we're always playing catch up and any little
- 22:13thing like you said, like repairing your car you didn't
- 22:16have or getting it out of from the towing.
- 22:19You don't have that money some. Medical.
- 22:21Like you don't. You just don't have it.
- 22:24It just isn't there. And there's not people that we
- 22:27can go to to be like, hey dad, can I borrow a?
- 22:30$100 but those people. Are not there for us so.
- 22:34Yeah, that was and I made I I look back, made it through.
- 22:37I mean, I made it through, you know, without too much, too much
- 22:40harm and damage. But looking back, like man, I I
- 22:42could have hurt somebody. I guess not by not having I
- 22:44mean, now it's so funny now I wouldn't even drive with that.
- 22:47I mean, I wouldn't drive without insurance.
- 22:48I wouldn't, I wouldn't pull that stunt and like.
- 22:51Older and wiser, but. Logan, I mean, Logan doesn't,
- 22:54you know, I mean, Logan was raised right.
- 22:57So he has insurance on his car and all these different things,
- 22:59but it's it, it's looking back at all these little, you know,
- 23:05because, you know, I mean, I don't know, I mean, it's like.
- 23:08At least you, at least you learned from them and didn't
- 23:12keep repeating them or keep, you know, breaking the law.
- 23:16And certain. Aspects, you know and and when
- 23:19you're young like sure that doesn't give us a pass for
- 23:22everything that we did but in the same sense like you're young
- 23:26and stupid and don't have the money so you're desperate you're
- 23:32gonna do whatever you need to do at that point in your life so.
- 23:37Whether it's. Oh yeah.
- 23:37Right. Wrong.
- 23:39It's just the this the only option you have in front of you
- 23:42at the time Well, so. My, my, my car that I got in a
- 23:45lot of trouble with cost me 200 bucks.
- 23:47I mean, so it's like, and so remember, I remember getting
- 23:52pulled over by the WSP and there was there was this famous
- 23:56officer his he was Officer Nelson, state Trooper Nelson.
- 24:00And he was infamous between Clarkson and assault and it's a
- 24:02five mile stretch stretch there. And he was infamous for
- 24:05patrolling that. And everybody had said don't get
- 24:07caught by by Trooper Nelson. And so I was out there one time
- 24:11in my in my 73 Capri and I had my racing gloves on.
- 24:14I had my sunglasses on. And so The funny thing about
- 24:19this car was that the speedometer was broken.
- 24:23Oh no, So I didn't, I mean, it was a stick shift.
- 24:25Like you said, it was a 5. You know, it was a stick shift.
- 24:28I have no idea how fast I'm going.
- 24:30So anyway, I've been told and sure enough, I got pulled over
- 24:34by Trooper Nelson. He did write me now, he wrote me
- 24:38a, he wrote me a ticket. He wrote me a ticket.
- 24:39And the hilarity was I, I can't remember call back then, but but
- 24:44he wrote me a ticket. And then he immediately walks up
- 24:46and goes, let's see here, bald tires, smashed windshield.
- 24:50Because remember, it's a car that's $200.
- 24:53Oh, no, no, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a rat trap.
- 24:56I mean, it's barely driving down the road.
- 24:59I mean, I got no money. What are you talking about?
- 25:01So it's funny. Was that particular ticket, I
- 25:04didn't even fight. I just sent the money in.
- 25:06And, and remember back in the day, tickets were like 50 bucks.
- 25:09They weren't they're they're not like it was today, But I mean, I
- 25:13still got. 50 bucks is a lot to. Someone back then probably
- 25:16checked a paycheck and pulled. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:18Well, my favorite one favorite ticket in that car is no this.
- 25:23Is great, more than. 10 I got full so I had gotten so I had
- 25:27gotten 2 speeding tickets within a 24 hour period, one in Idaho,
- 25:31one in Idaho and one in Washington in in 24 hours so I
- 25:35got 2. Is that because of the broken
- 25:37speedometer? Yes, the speedometer was broken.
- 25:39So I mean, I'm, I'm now by truthfully by the it's so if you
- 25:46know anything about driving a stick shift, you know, you know
- 25:50how fast you're going technically because you go
- 25:52first, second, third, you do. I mean 5th gear then you know,
- 25:57like you are. Well, I mean it's.
- 25:59Within reason, yeah. So 1, You know, if I, if I was
- 26:03trying to pay attention to the law, I would, you know, I knew
- 26:06how I knew how to, you know. So what happened was we had left
- 26:10drama practice, Clarkson High School, and we were going to
- 26:14this place called Fizzarri's Pizza.
- 26:15So we took off. And so I couldn't see behind me
- 26:18all the kids in drama class, you know, all back in the day in the
- 26:2180s, you're all in black or whatever, right?
- 26:23So all the kids pile in my car and we go ripping over to
- 26:27Fizzari's Pizza. And we finally get to the pizza
- 26:30place and all the other drama kids are sitting there and I
- 26:32pull in and the cop is behind me with his lights going.
- 26:35And they're like, oh, Virgil's getting busted.
- 26:37Virgil's. Getting a ticket?
- 26:38He been following you? Oh, so you're going to love this
- 26:41story? So he writes me a ticket.
- 26:43And so I was talking to some friends and like, well, you got
- 26:45it. You got to fight this ticket.
- 26:47And I'm like, yeah, you know what?
- 26:48I'm going to go, I'm going to fight it.
- 26:50So I go into court and I'm talking to the judge and I give
- 26:53my spiel. And he's like, yes, he goes, I
- 26:55understand, Mr. Wallace, but looking at this ticket, there's
- 26:58a reason why I can't reduce it or let you off.
- 27:01And I said, well, Your honor, what?
- 27:03What's the issue? And he goes, the, the address is
- 27:06the issue. I said, what do you mean?
- 27:08And he's like, he goes, this ticket was written at the police
- 27:10station, so Fazari's was way across town.
- 27:16So it goes Clarkson High School police station.
- 27:19And then Fazari's Pizza is way across town.
- 27:23So he had followed me all the way.
- 27:26That's crazy. And, and, and so he goes and he
- 27:28goes ticket stands boop, but he goes, he goes, I understand you
- 27:31want to get this reduced, but he goes, most people slow down when
- 27:34they go past the police station. He goes, you speed up, you speed
- 27:39up, so ticket stands, boom. And so when I got so the next so
- 27:43the next time I got the ticket from Trooper Nelson, I just sent
- 27:45the money and I was like, OK, not.
- 27:47Great, I'm not even going to try this.
- 27:49I'm not even going to try to fight this.
- 27:51So I'm good for, you know, even even in this, even at this age,
- 27:55I'm good for a ticket about every three years, so.
- 27:57Oh gosh I I better knock out some wood or something.
- 28:00I got 1 ticket after I just got my license when I turned 16
- 28:04because again, you think you're hot shit and you know.
- 28:09I got like. Driving down Hwy. 12 from high
- 28:13school back home or whatever it was.
- 28:15And sure enough, he's like sitting right by the wastewater
- 28:19treatment plant. And I was doing 75 back then.
- 28:22I think Hwy. 12, the speed limit was like 50.
- 28:25So he dinged me good. And yeah, like you said, tickets
- 28:29back, they were like 50 bucks. And yeah, I learned my lesson.
- 28:32Never. I mean, I still speed.
- 28:35I just I, I, I am a I'm a 5 and over person.
- 28:38I try to stay 5 and over and and to me I get cruise.
- 28:41Control because I know I will go Oh yeah, almost like 1015 over.
- 28:45I'm a less and and and and my and my beloved foster mom for
- 28:50all of her goodness, was a lead foot Pearl Pearl the it's well,
- 28:54it's in the book yeah, about the.
- 28:56State Trooper, I love that story.
- 28:58Yeah, yeah. She's, she's a lead foot, you
- 29:00know, She yeah. Oh my, she was.
- 29:02She was hell on wheels. It's like I got places to be.
- 29:06I have 4 kids. Like I'm trying to zip around
- 29:08town. Like you got two kids, I got to
- 29:10be in two different places at the same time.
- 29:12Like it's craziness when you're a mom hauling all these kids
- 29:16around. So yeah, I have places to be and
- 29:18I need to get there fast. Yeah, so, so when you, when you
- 29:22look at youth and you look at, you know, I mean, how many did
- 29:25you ever, did you ever skip school?
- 29:28Yeah, hello. Like, all the time.
- 29:32Like, all the time. Like, it was bad.
- 29:35I got so good at forging my mom and daddy's name that it was
- 29:40amazing there. For a while.
- 29:42I could probably just write my momma's letters for her because
- 29:46I could mimic their handwriting like perfectly.
- 29:50So I would write my own excuse notes.
- 29:52And you know how I mean, back then we didn't have cell phones.
- 29:55So they would call. Your house phone.
- 29:57They would call your house phone and I would just pretend to be
- 29:59my mom. Oh, yeah, she's home today.
- 30:01Don't worry about it. She's sick today.
- 30:03Yeah. Yeah, it was so easy back then
- 30:06compared to now to just. So of course.
- 30:09Oh God, I did it all the time. It was crazy.
- 30:12I mean, probably too much. I will, I will say the the I
- 30:15only I only skipped school one time and I got caught.
- 30:18Yeah, just once. And it was hilarious.
- 30:21My buddy Scott and I, we were going to go to a youth group.
- 30:24Oh, this is great. Church camp.
- 30:25We're going to church camp and. We're skipping school.
- 30:28That's what I'm talking about. And so so I changed the the
- 30:32permission slip. It wasn't that we didn't have
- 30:33permission, but I changed it from 2:00 to like 12 so we could
- 30:38get out at at noon and and sure as shittin and this is when I
- 30:42was with the walls is them them sons of bitches who never left
- 30:46home ever. Just happened to be driving
- 30:48around Clarkston and and ran into Scott and I walk in the
- 30:51streets. Oh gosh.
- 30:53And they go, aren't you supposed to be in school?
- 30:55And that was it. So we didn't get to go to church
- 30:57camp. And the church was very
- 30:58disappointed in me as their youth group leader.
- 31:02You know, I did get in trouble. I got grounded.
- 31:05And it was, it's embarrassed. I mean, again, these are things
- 31:07that you know now, well, now it's all, it's all public
- 31:09record. But embarrassing to be you're
- 31:11supposed to be the you're supposed to be the poster child.
- 31:14And I think I wasn't. No.
- 31:17And I think that I think that's what's interesting about people
- 31:20because we make assumptions about people, right?
- 31:23And so, so, so like right now you got the Keith Urban and
- 31:26Nicole Kidman thing right now, you know, we don't know the
- 31:29story or they're getting divorced, But but you make an
- 31:31assumption about who that person is because you think you know
- 31:35them as a celebrity or, you know, you'd like to think
- 31:37they're a good person or anybody like that.
- 31:40And so when our idols fall, when you discover something like it,
- 31:44you know, it's always a big shocker.
- 31:45Like, I can't believe it was that person did that or
- 31:49whatever. Yeah.
- 31:50And it's like, and I've always, I've always joked that we're all
- 31:52capable of, we're all face down. Yeah, face down.
- 31:57Of if you're Tom Brady or Keith Urban or.
- 32:00Whoever anybody is anybody. Anybody.
- 32:02Yeah. Anybody.
- 32:04So yeah, so I I've had luck, luckily nothing too, too, too
- 32:09traumatic. But yeah, my brushes with the
- 32:10law, you know, different we. Definitely didn't get anything
- 32:16worth stealing like these. Louvre, the jewelry thieves in
- 32:20Paris. No, nothing.
- 32:22Oh my gosh. I mean, but they but two of them
- 32:23have gotten caught so. Yeah, I saw that.
- 32:25I saw that. So, yeah.
- 32:27Nothing. Nothing so as crazy as that.
- 32:29But you know, I always look back and, you know, but they always
- 32:33tell you you can't like if you take one piece of your life
- 32:37away, you know, of regret or you know, or guilt, you're not who
- 32:42you are today, I guess. And so I kind of always because
- 32:44I. Think we we learn from that or
- 32:47grow? Or hope so.
- 32:49Something right, something happens to us from that
- 32:52experience, hopefully for the better, yes.
- 32:56Yeah, so. So, yeah.
- 32:57So those are those are things I, you know, I don't talk a lot.
- 33:01I mean, I well, it depends on the story on the radio.
- 33:03I mean, I do talk about this stuff, but yeah, but it's what
- 33:06it yeah, it's like I would like to.
- 33:08I would like to think that, you know, I'm different.
- 33:11I'm not totally different from when I was younger, but some of
- 33:14the some of my behavior, some of my behavior and, and, and I I
- 33:18already know my behavior is pretty tame to all for a lot of
- 33:20other people. Different different things,
- 33:24different things. My you know, my behavior was
- 33:26just yeah. I mean, I, there was a lot.
- 33:29I know a lot more, like you said, my brothers, my siblings,
- 33:32they were getting a lot more trouble than than I was.
- 33:34I was AI was a good kid for the most part in these in these
- 33:38different situations, I'm sure you were a good kid.
- 33:40Oh, yeah. I mean, other than all that
- 33:42stupid teenage stuff that I did, yeah.
- 33:45I mean, my father was the one that was like hell on wheels.
- 33:49I don't know how any of us survived that.
- 33:51But so interesting question for you when it comes to your own
- 33:54kids. Now I know you have a great
- 33:56family unit, you've got 4 kids. Do you?
- 34:00Do you? Do you feel that you were more
- 34:04lenient with your children than what your parents were with you?
- 34:08Yes. More I guess, and more trusting
- 34:12I guess is the word so. And they knew.
- 34:15So I mean, and keep in mind like three of our four kids are geeky
- 34:20band kids. And they knew that if they broke
- 34:25that trust, then they weren't going to be allowed to stay out
- 34:29until 1 or whatever time it was. I don't think any of them have
- 34:33really ever had a curfew. But we've always known where
- 34:37they were, who they were with. And most of the time it's at our
- 34:40house playing board games. This is like, this is the life
- 34:43of our children, like boring in comparison to you and I.
- 34:48And so we never really had to put a curfew on them.
- 34:52They never snuck out of the house.
- 34:54I mean keep in mind their bedrooms are like 2 stories
- 34:57above so it's not like it would be easy for them but I mean it
- 35:01just they knew that we trusted them and once they broke that
- 35:06trust then all that stuff would be taken away.
- 35:09So, and it was completely different conversations as they
- 35:12were growing up for us as their parents compared to my parents
- 35:18per SE. And so I just really made sure
- 35:21that as a parent, I was not going to be like my parents.
- 35:26And so it's was completely different for them in in all
- 35:29regards. Like whether it's talking about
- 35:31sex or any of that kind of stuff was completely different and
- 35:36more open conversations and not like this hush hush thing that
- 35:41you can't really talk about. So yeah, it was completely
- 35:44different for my. You know, it's one of it's,
- 35:46it's, it's like for me, it's like with my, with my foster
- 35:50parents, it, it would have been 100% trust.
- 35:53Like I don't like, I don't think if if I had, if I was able to
- 35:57have been with them even into my teenage years, I loved and
- 36:01respected them so much. Yeah, exactly.
- 36:03You would have been if Pearl would have said you'd be home at
- 36:05midnight. Virgil's your ass would have
- 36:07been home at like 1158. Yeah.
- 36:11I mean, I, I, I I just love them so much.
- 36:14Yeah, I love not to say not to say.
- 36:16I mean, we talk a lot, a lot about in the book.
- 36:18I do get in trouble a lot. Oh, yeah.
- 36:19I mean you. Still would have tested
- 36:21boundaries. It's oh, yeah, I still got, I
- 36:22still got in trouble. But everything but everything,
- 36:24as I've always said, was reinforced with love.
- 36:27It was just like, even if I got even if I got swatted on the
- 36:30butt, you know, she'd always come back 20 minutes later and
- 36:33go, Virgil, I'm correcting this behavior because I love you.
- 36:36And I always, I never felt, I never felt that you didn't, they
- 36:39didn't love me. You know, even when I was in
- 36:41trouble, I might gripe about it and kick rocks down the road and
- 36:45get upset. But I knew that I knew that they
- 36:46loved me. What's interesting about the
- 36:49Wallaces, and I don't know why. So one of the big breakdowns
- 36:52with the Wallaces and I was I snuck off to junior prom and
- 36:56didn't tell them. So I did.
- 37:00I did and I and I look. Back.
- 37:01I mean, you wanted to go to junior prom like I didn't.
- 37:05Ask and I don't reveal the. Oh oh, you didn't ask in the 1st
- 37:08place. That's like you just.
- 37:09Ask in the first place. Taking my mom's car.
- 37:12Right. I just, I just made the
- 37:14assumption that they were going to say no anyway, or well, no,
- 37:18I'm going to, I'm going to put a better perspective.
- 37:22I didn't want them in my life. I guess so you're not going to
- 37:27let them in and share things with them?
- 37:31And that was kind of. So after that, that was kind of
- 37:33the big breakdown. Trust any of you, especially,
- 37:37you know, people like them, you like, you know that if I give
- 37:41XYZ information to them, then you cannot trust them with that
- 37:46information. So for you, like that would have
- 37:49been like whether the Wallaces would have made fun of you, you
- 37:51know, whatever the case might have been.
- 37:53But we learn very quickly that we can't trust people and
- 37:59certain people in our lives with XYZ.
- 38:01And so we just completely shut people out.
- 38:04I mean, just to protect ourselves and to be able to
- 38:06function as people and do the things they want to do well.
- 38:09And that's what you did. I think what's interesting from
- 38:11the from the walls perspective and I and, and one thing I
- 38:14always talk about a lot is I wanted to be a normal kid and I,
- 38:20and I've talked about this a lot and I felt that they stifled
- 38:22that to where it's like I wanted to go.
- 38:26So in their mind, whenever you would have a discussion with
- 38:28them, it was like you're you're going to be out drinking, you're
- 38:31going to be partying, you're going to be having sex, whatever
- 38:34those things. Are right, they're instantly
- 38:35assuming the worst. They're yes.
- 38:38And, and that's, and that's every conversation about
- 38:40anything. And my biggest struggle with
- 38:43them more than anything else was I just want to be normal.
- 38:47You know, kids, kids, teenagers get to go watch a football game
- 38:51at the, at the stadium. They have an ASB card and they
- 38:55get to go watch their, you know, and all, all these different
- 38:58things. And I always felt that they were
- 39:01stifling that or I just felt like I couldn't even ask them.
- 39:06I, I don't know why that was that the way it was.
- 39:08It was that living in that fear that that I always felt like the
- 39:12answer was no anyway. No, I mean, I think that that's
- 39:15how especially parents back then and you know, even for like my
- 39:19mom, like that's how they ruled was by fear, was fear and
- 39:22intimidation. And so, yeah, then you don't
- 39:25even ask them. Because.
- 39:27You already know or assume what the answer's gonna be, or you're
- 39:31gonna get in trouble just for asking the question.
- 39:35Well, and I think, you know, I mean, I'm not saying I was
- 39:38perfect by any means, but I know that it hurt their feelings a
- 39:42lot because I snuck off. And that's the that's the
- 39:46problem where I had three dates. But but I did, I did sneak off
- 39:51to that particular prom and then the senior prom.
- 39:54I, I was living with the minister at the time.
- 39:56So you know I didn't have to you.
- 39:57Had permission. Well, I was even asking.
- 40:00I mean, I got treated like, yeah, I mean, that.
- 40:04I, I, I, I talk about that a lot.
- 40:06That senior year was the best year of my entire my entire life
- 40:09and I still didn't get laid. So, I mean, but but what made
- 40:14that year so special was I got to do anything and everything
- 40:17that I really wanted to do in high school.
- 40:19But you got to be normal. Yes, yes and feel like.
- 40:22All the normal kids that got to go to the dances and got to do
- 40:26this and got to do that and. It and it and it was the
- 40:28greatest feeling to one time I was downtown cruising and people
- 40:33were shocked. They're like what Virgil's
- 40:35downtown cruising Because you know, I mean, I did, I did have
- 40:38this era of I'm better, I guess. I mean, it wasn't meant to be
- 40:41that way, but you know how you know, it's like, it's like you
- 40:45see a kid and you're like, wow, that kid came to this thing.
- 40:47You know, like like they would never come to that.
- 40:49And so they kind of took me definitely they looked at me as
- 40:52a goody 2 shoes, I guess. I guess that's the way to look
- 40:55at it. So is right.
- 40:57Did were you ever perceived as a goody 2 shoes?
- 41:01Yes, to some degree, yeah, probably.
- 41:04I mean, I mean, I was for the most part until, yeah, until I
- 41:08got a little bit older. Yeah, like.
- 41:10So I hit 16 ish. Right, right.
- 41:13So there was I, I think they're. 18 probably.
- 41:15Yeah, so in my in my high school career, I think there there
- 41:18there was a perception that I was a goody 2 shoes.
- 41:21I definitely, it was so funny when they discovered or I had
- 41:25the biggest crush on this gal named Katie Howell, which I've
- 41:28talked about a lot, that that was the first time I ever got
- 41:31the sickness right that we've talked about on the podcast
- 41:33before. And I remember that someone that
- 41:35she was on the bus going to her cross country meet or whatever
- 41:38and she was, Oh yeah, Virgil likes me and, and the boys in
- 41:42the bus were like, he likes girls.
- 41:46So, I mean, so it was just a yeah, well, no, I but it was
- 41:50there's, it was just that perception of goody 2 shoes.
- 41:53And then they didn't, they didn't know my sexuality or
- 41:56what. They didn't know anything.
- 41:57Well, they didn't know anything about me because because the
- 42:00walls has had us on lockdown. Right.
- 42:02And as the kid that's in that environment, just like we've
- 42:06talked about how we didn't bring any of our friends back to our
- 42:08house, you also don't tell them anything about your house.
- 42:11Like you can't tell them, right? What's going on?
- 42:14Because you, again, you can't trust that these kids aren't
- 42:17going to turn that back around on you and make fun of you or
- 42:20whatever it might be. Well, yeah, exactly.
- 42:22Because if you invite a friend over and the dishes aren't done
- 42:24or the laundry's not done or the OR you're living at or you're
- 42:27living in a hoarder house, basically.
- 42:28I mean, honestly, you got, you know, stuff isn't kept up.
- 42:32You don't want them going back to school going.
- 42:33Oh my gosh, I went to, I went to Michelle at Virgil's house and
- 42:36oh, it's it stinks. And you know, yeah, yeah, I hear
- 42:40you. Yep, Yep, you get it.
- 42:43I did notice. I did notice you're back in your
- 42:47usual spot for. Podcast and.
- 42:49You're not like moving all around your house, so why are
- 42:53you back in your spot? Give.
- 42:55Us an update so the good news is that that the the home repairs
- 42:58are done. We got two dogs wrestling over
- 43:01there. If you're just curious what's
- 43:02going on over there in the corner, we've got a visiting dog
- 43:04named Cairo at Bodie and they're wrestling on the couch right
- 43:08now. So yeah, we had that big leak
- 43:11from the sprinkler. So the guest room got leak got
- 43:14rained out. So we got it fixed and the nice
- 43:17thing is I'm of course I worst case scenario said oh, $10,000
- 43:20blah blah, blah and I think we got it all done all fixed for
- 43:23like $5000 all in. So the siding on the House got
- 43:27replaced the the cement got sealed and then the the bed
- 43:33well, so we decided to do both bedrooms with new carpets.
- 43:36The man caves got new carpet and the guest room has new carpet
- 43:39smell. I love the smell.
- 43:40A new carpet. Meet you.
- 43:42I love the smell of paint. Like I'd like to just make my
- 43:44husband paint rooms. Right, right.
- 43:47It's like I feel like walking and smelling.
- 43:49Yeah, so these two rooms are man, they smell like $1,000,000
- 43:52like wow, you know, so, so the nice thing is it didn't, it
- 43:56didn't break the bank. So me, of course I go wait,
- 43:59worst case scenario. So, but yeah, we so yeah, that's
- 44:02why I'm back in my my back to my original spot, back in the back
- 44:05in the office. And just to show you that I'm
- 44:09trying to change Michelle, I took I took Megan this weekend
- 44:13to this Cameo Heights mansion. It's AB and B it's a Oh, nice.
- 44:18It's right outside of Walla Walla, right.
- 44:20And then I made, I made it a point to not I'm trying to
- 44:25change the better made it a point not to mention the cost of
- 44:28anything because remember, I make it up for Ryan.
- 44:31Remember I told on the last podcast I talked about the
- 44:33anniversary where I felt really bad because I had a dollar
- 44:36amount. That's all I had in cash on me.
- 44:38Yes. And then as she and then as she
- 44:40ordered stuff, I kept getting irritated.
- 44:42Right. You were, you know.
- 44:44Right. And so and so I I felt like I
- 44:47yeah, so and so it was good. It was a 74 you.
- 44:51Needed to redeem yourself is what you're saying?
- 44:53Well, I don't know if I did it but but it was.
- 44:56But it was kind of cool you. Mentioned the cost and prices
- 44:59and things at all on this entire trip.
- 45:01No, no. Did you?
- 45:03Expect anything from her. No, of course not.
- 45:07Besides the youths. Well, besides the usual husband
- 45:10stuff, but. Well, again, that's expecting
- 45:13something from her, and again, she's just going to want to go
- 45:16on this nice trip and just have it be fun.
- 45:18Well, she is, yeah, she can't. She could have done that.
- 45:20She could have done that too. I would have been happy with
- 45:21that. But yes, like I had been feeling
- 45:23guilty about every time we go out the.
- 45:25Anniversary. Which things cost and so So it
- 45:28was a 7 course dinner, 300 bucks.
- 45:31That's that's pretty good for two people for seven courses,
- 45:36that's a really good. Courses are, courses are.
- 45:40Gourmet Hello have. You not.
- 45:42Eaten at like fancy restaurants like you get like.
- 45:45I know, I know. So So yeah, so that was that was
- 45:48the good. And and then of course, we
- 45:50stayed in one of the German suite.
- 45:51Now the cool thing about this B&B is there's only 7 rooms.
- 45:56So it's like, so we were in the German suite, which was awesome
- 45:58and they had, you know, loft and different things like that.
- 46:00And they all themed differently or?
- 46:02They're yes, they're all themed differently, but it's, and
- 46:05again, it's super cool. It's in wine country.
- 46:07So there's so many. And so one of the things that
- 46:09Megan had brought up was, Oh, I wish we could have stayed a
- 46:11couple of days because I think you would have got more of the
- 46:14ambiance or more of the, you know, different things.
- 46:17And, and, and then and even she said, well, she goes, I think it
- 46:20was kind of overpriced for what we got.
- 46:22So, you know, but but I just made sure that I didn't bring,
- 46:26you know, and and. She wanted to.
- 46:28Get herself $100 bottle of wine. I was all right, honey, Go do go
- 46:31for it. Because I just felt like I had
- 46:33to make it up to her. Yeah, I mean, you did.
- 46:38No, I know. Well, no, she's correct me on
- 46:39the wine. She bought her own bottle of
- 46:41wine for 100 bucks. But I'm just saying.
- 46:43I would have. I would have.
- 46:44I would have bought it. Megan could be on the show.
- 46:47I would have bought it for 100 bucks.
- 46:49I would have done it to make you happy.
- 46:52Oh goodness. Well, at least you hopefully
- 46:54redeemed yourself with her. Did I redeem myself?
- 46:58No comment. It's Crick.
- 47:01It's crickets. It's crickets.
- 47:02I can't hear anything. The peanut gallery.
- 47:05I can't hear anything in the peanut gallery up there.
- 47:08That is fabulous. Yeah, we should have our spouses
- 47:11on one time. One of the someone had asked if
- 47:15we were going to have guests. So yes, I'm thinking we need to,
- 47:17you know, I want to do what he said, she said.
- 47:21We might have to ease into our spouses to see how this goes.
- 47:26Well, we already know. We've already discovered that
- 47:28I'm a big fat liar. So.
- 47:29So I'll be gay. I'll be we over.
- 47:33Exaggerate everything yes, just like me dying on you know, my
- 47:37kids think it was an over exaggeration.
- 47:39I was like, my heart rate was 40 like.
- 47:42I don't, but, but we're over exaggerators.
- 47:46We're just, we're just over exaggerators, I guess, to make
- 47:49the story good, to make the story good.
- 47:51Yes. These stories, it was so funny.
- 47:54I was doing an event for Subaru Mccurley Subaru.
- 47:56They were doing a pet adoption event.
- 47:58And the guy walked, a guy and a wife walked up and they're
- 48:01talking to me and they're like, oh, goes, oh, it goes, I love
- 48:04your show. I mean, I hadn't said I was
- 48:05Rick, but he just knew. And I love your radio show.
- 48:09And he goes, he goes, he goes, honey, this is the guy who has
- 48:11all those stories on the radio. So yeah, all the, all the exact,
- 48:18yeah, all the. Exactly.
- 48:19Do other people have the radio? Have stories?
- 48:22Probably not. You know me, I've always got.
- 48:23Stories. Probably AI.
- 48:25Ashley doesn't have stories. We know that.
- 48:27Much No, they don't know. They don't they don't have
- 48:29trooper they don't have Trooper Nelson.
- 48:32They don't, they don't, they don't have stop breaking the
- 48:34law, I mean. Or sneaking in and out of the
- 48:38house or. Skipping, they don't have any.
- 48:39Of that, any of those stories. What are you talking about?
- 48:43They don't have any of that. I do.
- 48:44I do. I do think it's cool that your
- 48:46kids were able to. You gave your kids a different.
- 48:49That was the whole goal. Like even with my son, Logan is
- 48:52to give them a life that that I didn't get.
- 48:54Yes, and it and again, we see how we grew up wasn't right or
- 49:00certain pieces of a wasn't right, or I want to make sure
- 49:03I'm not like this or I'm going to break the circle or how,
- 49:06however you want to look at it or say it or whatever it is.
- 49:09I just knew that I was not going to be that type of mom or that
- 49:13type of parent and to make sure that I broke the circle and
- 49:18well, hopefully I did. I mean, sure I wasn't a perfect
- 49:21parent, but I sure the hell tried my best to.
- 49:24Be better for them. You have 3 geniuses, What the
- 49:26heck? They didn't get that from me.
- 49:29I know it's gonna say who has who has three geniuses.
- 49:32You know, I got, I got 4. Of them, who's not the genius?
- 49:35What are you saying? There's four who's not the
- 49:37genius? I'm not pointing fingers
- 49:40pointing. Three Which kid?
- 49:42Which kid is not? Saying nothing.
- 49:45I'm not Only you know only only you know, right?
- 49:52Well, yeah, the joke is like, who is my favorite?
- 49:54We always joke about that. So.
- 49:55Right. Well, my kid eats paste paste.
- 49:59So what do you want? You know, what do you you know?
- 50:01I will say though, I will say that Logan, I told Logan he
- 50:07couldn't go to a dance and he snuck out and went to the dance.
- 50:12So I know so. Yeah.
- 50:15Right. So if you ever want that, like I
- 50:18remember because I said I'd gone to the prom.
- 50:20Yeah, yeah. I'd gone to the.
- 50:21I'd gone to the prom so. Which dance did he not get to go
- 50:24to? So it was.
- 50:29The dogs want to chime in on this.
- 50:31Yes, so. So he got invited to go to a
- 50:34dance in Pomeroy, Washington. So he was in Richland and he
- 50:39wanted to go to a dance in Pomeroy.
- 50:41How far is that? I have no idea.
- 50:43That's a couple hours away, a couple hours away.
- 50:45And I just said no, I said you're not.
- 50:47You're just not going to go. You have no way to get there.
- 50:50So you're not going to go. I'm not going to drive you.
- 50:52You're not going to go. And he got pretty upset about
- 50:54it. He was a junior in high school.
- 50:56And next thing I know, I come home from work and he's gone.
- 50:59He's gone. And he had called his cousin who
- 51:02drove, who drove all the way from Lewiston to pick him up and
- 51:06take him to this dance in Pomeroy.
- 51:10So. I'm sorry, that's a fabulous
- 51:12story. I love it.
- 51:13Yeah. So, yeah.
- 51:15So anyways, he got he got grounded.
- 51:18He. Got going to say, how long did
- 51:19he get grounded? He got grounded, he got he got
- 51:21in a lot of trouble for that. For mine was usually like a week
- 51:24a month, it just depended on what it was.
- 51:26So you. Know it just depended yeah so
- 51:29yeah he got grounded for that but I was I I laughed because
- 51:32history history repeats itself but.
- 51:35But but he's not going to have kids.
- 51:37I thought so. No, no, not at all.
- 51:39So I guess that's not, Yeah, that's not gonna happen.
- 51:41So yeah, I snuck out on the Wallaces and he snuck out on me
- 51:45and. I snuck out, but as far as I
- 51:48know, none of my kids snuck out. Now, I could have heard any of
- 51:53these stories, but they I mean, they've spilled some stuff that
- 51:57but but it's stuff like, you know, the law where you can't
- 52:00for the six month, first six months that you get your
- 52:02license, they can't drive anybody other than their
- 52:05siblings. Well, I just learned that they
- 52:07were driving their friends, stuff like that.
- 52:09It's nothing like earth shattering.
- 52:11They weren't sneaking out of the house, or at least as far as I
- 52:14know so far. Every.
- 52:15That's that's. Oh yeah, they were like.
- 52:19Come on. Well, and then Benjamin.
- 52:21Those are those are rookie numbers.
- 52:23So Benjamin was dating Haley at the time and so he would have to
- 52:27pick up Jackson and Shaylee from school, usually after school.
- 52:30And so he was bringing, he was also driving Haley home and he
- 52:33would bribe his siblings to make sure that they didn't tell me
- 52:37because he knew that he would get in trouble.
- 52:39So of. Course he was.
- 52:40Also bribing people. Well, I, I also think because
- 52:45and not, and not that you were lenient, but because you had
- 52:47trust with your kids. If, if you're allowed to, if
- 52:52you're a good parent and you know, you've got good kids and
- 52:55you've raised them right, you #1 you got to trust them and they
- 52:58got to trust you. And so, and if you've raised
- 53:01them right, you have to trust the fact that they're not out
- 53:03doing something that, that, that they shouldn't be doing.
- 53:05And so if you give them, but like you did say, which is
- 53:08interesting too, when you have drama kids or you have van kids,
- 53:12not to say that stuff doesn't stuff doesn't happen, but the
- 53:16odds are slimmer in terms of in terms of your kid coming with
- 53:20the leather jacket, smoke egg. Hey mom, you know smoking the
- 53:23cig? And which I've always said wanna
- 53:25not only being a decent parent, like that's a main thing, but
- 53:29also who their friends are matters very much so.
- 53:34So like those are two very important things when they're
- 53:38growing up. I think so.
- 53:39Agreed one hundred 100% on that. So yeah, band kids and drama
- 53:44kids are great. No, if you've got, if you've
- 53:47got, if they've got a good, a good friendship circle,
- 53:50absolutely. But again, if you're hanging out
- 53:52with juvenile delinquents, then you're going to be you and you
- 53:55know, and that, and that was my that was my siblings like like
- 53:58Tuffy and Steven and all of them, the reason why they were
- 54:01always in jail or get in trouble is because the people that they
- 54:03hang around hang around with. Now, what's the most interesting
- 54:06about criminals? I will say one thing about
- 54:07criminals and defend them at least one little bit.
- 54:09I'm amazed on how many criminals have the biggest hearts.
- 54:13Oh yeah. I I'm always shocked about, I'm
- 54:16always shocked by like if you're, if you're broken down on
- 54:18the side of the road, it never surprises me when, when the most
- 54:21meanest looking dude who probably breaks the law daily
- 54:25pulls up and and changes your tire.
- 54:27You know what I'm saying, right? Knows how to fix your car, he.
- 54:29Right. You know, I'd almost, I'd almost
- 54:31take, I'd almost take that guy over some guy in his fancy
- 54:33Mercedes, you know what I'm saying?
- 54:34That that's just going to keep on driving by.
- 54:36Stopping he are you kidding? Like if he breaks down, he's
- 54:39calling his people or the tow truck.
- 54:41Right, exactly. So.
- 54:43So it's interesting that some of the kindest people I've met were
- 54:47criminals. Or the poorest people, some of
- 54:50the kindest. People.
- 54:51Are the poorest people they would give?
- 54:53You they will give the shirt literally yes the I wanna.
- 54:56Agree one. 100% agree with that. Yeah, you cannot, you cannot
- 55:01judge a book by its cover by any means.
- 55:03And I've always like, same as you.
- 55:05I've always been shocked by the the person you least expect help
- 55:08from is the person that steps up.
- 55:10And I think social media has made it worse that now we are,
- 55:13we just, you judge things off of a picture now from Instagram,
- 55:17it's not even and it's all staged.
- 55:20Some of these influencers go and rent these houses.
- 55:23They're not even their real houses, for God's sake.
- 55:26So you. You can't believe any of these
- 55:28things. And news broke a few years back
- 55:32that MTV Cribs was also all staged.
- 55:36A lot of those. I did not hear that, no.
- 55:39You're going to like my heart. Yes, yes, yes.
- 55:42So So yes, a lot of them will say it was not they again, they
- 55:46did the same thing. This is before social
- 55:48influencers. They went and rented.
- 55:51I think remember, remember the the the gal named JoJo, She had
- 55:55a big hit called It's a little too late or whatever.
- 55:57She was 13 years old. Well, she she copped to her MTV
- 56:01cribs that she was on this. Is she a new album that just
- 56:03came? Out recently and she and she
- 56:05copped to her MTV cribs that it was all rented.
- 56:07All the cars were rented, the mansions were rented Yeah.
- 56:11Because she was out on tour, she says.
- 56:12I was living in a out of a suitcase well.
- 56:15I mean, yeah, I could see that like.
- 56:17But there are other big stars that rented that.
- 56:21Yeah, MTV Cribs. You didn't go to their house.
- 56:25Disappointment. No, I don't know who those.
- 56:27Celebrities are. Now I want to know who those
- 56:30celebrities are. Do a search.
- 56:32Do a search when we get off. The I am now, you know, now I
- 56:35want to know who's lying like. Who's lying are you?
- 56:39Are you just heartbroken? Well I mean reality TV is not
- 56:44reality which my daughter has to remind me of this all the time
- 56:48as I'm watching Survivor or I love the Real Housewives
- 56:52franchises so. I know you.
- 56:54Do usually she comes downstairs and I'm watching one of those
- 56:56and she's like, oh God. She's like, you know, this isn't
- 56:59real, right? And it's like, well, I love I'm
- 57:02here for the drama and rich people with problems.
- 57:05So. Yeah.
- 57:07So I know for the. Most part it's not real, but MTV
- 57:11dear. So So for example, pop singer
- 57:13JoJo used her uncle's house on Cape Cod for her episode.
- 57:17Oh, you googled it? And JA JA Rule's house on Cribs.
- 57:21JA Rule's house on Cribs was actually a four day rental, Ja
- 57:27Rule. So there you go.
- 57:29Robbie Williams used a fake house.
- 57:32He. Did even hired A-Team and even
- 57:34hired a team of pretend butlers to be there on shooting day.
- 57:38Rapper Redmond used his real home for the show, but he later
- 57:40revealed that MTV producers hadn't asked him to rent
- 57:43something nicer. So basically.
- 57:47And then $0.50 showed off an extensive collection of luxury
- 57:50cars on his episodes, which all turned out to be rentals and
- 57:54little bow Wows. A little bow.
- 57:56That was the big one. That was the big one.
- 58:00Little Bow Wow. You remember a little Bow Wow,
- 58:03there was a there was an episode where he said, oh, catch me on
- 58:06MTV cribs. I'm I'm taking my private jet
- 58:08and somebody's did a snapshot of him in coach and said how, how
- 58:13you know? So because like you said, social
- 58:15influencers right now will stand outside of a jet and go, Yep,
- 58:19man, this this tour, this tour is, you know, and.
- 58:22It's. Just I'm on a tour again and
- 58:23then someone's like, why are you in coach?
- 58:29I know I broke your childhood. Sorry, I'll never do that.
- 58:31Again, MTV Cribs, it's not right.
- 58:35How can you really? Yeah.
- 58:36How can you really believe all the crap that's out there right
- 58:38now? I don't believe anything.
- 58:40You can't. No.
- 58:42All right, well, we are almost at an hour.
- 58:46I did want to talk about the price of my coffee, but we'll
- 58:49have to say that for a next step.
- 58:51Well. Talk because we're criminals.
- 58:52It's much it's much more fun to talk about being criminals.
- 58:55You know, we learned. We've learned a lot of.
- 58:57Criminal stuff. Yeah, I did a lot more than
- 59:00yeah, that I've. I've never admitted any of this
- 59:02stuff to hardly anybody because it's a little embarrassing when
- 59:05you think about it. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:07I mean, I think my kids know, Yeah.
- 59:11I think they know most of the stories.
- 59:13I don't know if they know the one with my dad and his
- 59:15girlfriend. That car, they knew I took the
- 59:18car, snuck out of the house. They knew that story with my
- 59:22mom. And they probably don't know how
- 59:24much I skipped school, but. So.
- 59:27I know the rest of. Them I look at those Michelle,
- 59:30as those are mom cards and dad cards.
- 59:32So when you're sitting down with your kid after they've broken
- 59:34the law, you're able to whip out a dad card and go, hey, son,
- 59:39here's what I did. Don't do it.
- 59:41And then they feel better about, you know, breaking the law or
- 59:44they don't feel like they don't feel so alone in the, you know.
- 59:47Right, because again, you're just stupid kids.
- 59:50Right. So.
- 59:51But you don't repeat it. That's that's, you know, so all
- 59:54the times I've broken the law, which has been many, I didn't
- 59:57repeat it. So what's that lesson from this
- 1:00:00episode? Kids?
- 1:00:01Don't repeat any of the stuff. Go ahead and just once, don't
- 1:00:06let go. Any of the stuff Rick and I have
- 1:00:08just said we did in this podcast, that's our disclaimer.
- 1:00:14That's it for today's episode of Rick and That Michelle.
- 1:00:18Check. Thanks for hanging out with us.
