- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday. We have our movie guy back with
- 0:13us and we're a little remiss. We're a little behind, but we
- 0:16did see Predator Badlands. We're going to talk all about
- 0:19that, but let me introduce the captain of the vessel, Jason
- 0:22Riley, with us each and every week.
- 0:25Jay, how you feeling? I'm feeling pretty good.
- 0:27I am digging this fall season and we are ready to hit winter
- 0:30and I'm excited to hear about this movie.
- 0:32It's been out for a little while, but we have had to sync
- 0:35up you, the movie guy who is joining us, by the way, live via
- 0:40remote satellite. So we've got him here voice
- 0:43only, but say a few words, movie guy, Rob Peetz, because we want
- 0:47the people they, they know you, they love you and they'll take
- 0:49you any way they can get. And we appreciate you cutting
- 0:51dialing in from the deepest, darkest areas of we're not even
- 0:54sure you could tell us. It's the recesses of space.
- 0:57I'm actually in the satellite. I can't, I there's no cameras up
- 1:00here, guys. I don't know what's happening.
- 1:03I've been trapped in this satellite.
- 1:05I don't know. They put me.
- 1:06It's a Musk thing. It's, it's Amazon.
- 1:09There's a bunch of crap going on, man.
- 1:11I don't know what's happening. It's AI based.
- 1:14Yeah. I don't know man.
- 1:16I'm I'm up here people. If you guys could get me down
- 1:19that would be great. Thanks.
- 1:20I got a couple packages actually, if you wouldn't mind
- 1:22sifting through some while you're up there.
- 1:24There's some omnibuses I'm looking for.
- 1:25Maybe. Maybe they're there.
- 1:27No, that's the drone satellite. That's a whole different
- 1:30satellite, yeah. Different satellite.
- 1:33All right, well, let's have our first shot and then let's dive
- 1:35into Predator Badlands. And Rob, you're going to have to
- 1:39cast your mind back a little bit to when we saw this in the
- 1:42theater in IMAX. But before we do, let's have our
- 1:45first shot, Jay, because it is kind of early.
- 1:48I will start off with some bare face in coffee.
- 1:51What have you got, my friend? I had my coffee earlier so I
- 1:54have poured myself a shot, even though it's early, of some
- 1:56lovely Tulamar do to get me started.
- 1:58What have they got for you in space, Rob?
- 2:02Oddly enough, there's a, there's a full kind of cafe up here with
- 2:05a bunch of different things. I am drinking a, a London Fog.
- 2:08I, I, I was just able to, to kind of pull it together with
- 2:11some, they had some milk and there was some, some, some, some
- 2:15Earl Grey. There are a bunch of things
- 2:16going on. So I was able to make a a London
- 2:18Fog. Perfect.
- 2:19Yeah, it sounds cold. It's cold though.
- 2:21It's freezing cold. It's so cold up here, guys.
- 2:25How cold is it? No.
- 2:28So cold my nips are. Fully I wouldn't even.
- 2:33Yeah, fully wrecked but I wouldn't even say diamond.
- 2:35I mean probably sub diamond. Perfect.
- 2:38That's a perfect blow line on that joke.
- 2:40I love it. Sub diamond.
- 2:42Let's let's cheers. Rob's sub diamond nips chin
- 2:45chin. Never done that before 1st on
- 2:46the show. Cutting glass, baby.
- 2:50I almost spit out that whiskey. Thanks.
- 2:52That was a good one Rob. I like that one.
- 2:53No worries. All right, Predator Badlands,
- 2:58Rob, you heard me say this line, but I I haven't shared it with
- 3:02Jay or our listeners, but let me just begin with by saying
- 3:05Predator Badlands is the gone with the wind of the Predator
- 3:09series. I'm telling you right now, I had
- 3:12a hell of a good time watching this movie.
- 3:14It had a little bit of humor that just added to it.
- 3:17The effects were top notch and a very cool story and a tie in
- 3:21with another very famous sci-fi series.
- 3:24We're not going to say which one, but it it's a nice tie in
- 3:27and it makes perfect sense. Rob, what was your thoughts on
- 3:30the movie? What did you like?
- 3:31What? I mean, I I assume you didn't
- 3:33not like anything, but you tell me.
- 3:35You tell our viewers. Yeah, your take.
- 3:38Yeah. I thought it was, I thought it
- 3:39was, I thought it was pretty damn good.
- 3:41I mean, it's, it's, I mean, are we not going to say what it's
- 3:43tied? I mean, it's pretty obvious what
- 3:45it's tied into. Yeah, we don't have to though.
- 3:47I mean. OK, Yeah, yeah, yeah, OK.
- 3:49Well, it's, it's, it's if you know anything about, if you know
- 3:52anything about anything, you'll know that this is tied into
- 3:55something that's quite I, I, we got to talk about that.
- 3:57Yeah, I don't know. You can tell I'm gonna, I'm
- 4:00gonna bring it up because. It's it's.
- 4:02Right out of the gate they tell you what's going on, so I'm just
- 4:04going to say it. It's not right out of the gate,
- 4:06it's a little further. That's the gate.
- 4:08But irregardless, let's go ahead and share it.
- 4:10It's a narrow gate. Look, I mean a satellite, guys,
- 4:13I'm trapped in a satellite. OK, go ahead this.
- 4:16Is all I have. This is all I have.
- 4:18Tell the. Stories.
- 4:19We'd love to hear it. We went, we got out of the
- 4:21movie. I almost went home and then on
- 4:22the way home, I was trapped in this Amazon truck.
- 4:25Now I'm up in a satellite. You got to give me something.
- 4:28This is what I'm taking. It's Waylon Utani.
- 4:31It's it's based on the Alien, the Alien franchises.
- 4:33Finally, I think for the first time, if you if you think about
- 4:37Alien versus Predator and the Alien versus Predator Requiem
- 4:40movies, which were B movies at best, they were Fox, you know,
- 4:44doing doing the thing finally, but doing it half assed and not
- 4:48really spending much much, you know, not investing in it.
- 4:51Those are not Canon to Alien. I believe this is the first
- 4:54Canon to the Alien franchise where they've canonized it.
- 4:59Predator is now officially, you know, there's always been, you
- 5:02know, since Predator 2, there's been hints of Alien.
- 5:05This is finally officially a things, you know, the the the
- 5:10the the Ellie Fanning plays a basically a a synth that that he
- 5:15comes across this this this young alien who's forced to
- 5:19fight for his life on this very Frizzetta.
- 5:24I would say Frank Frizzetta. I know it.
- 5:27Influenced planet. Yeah, they call it the Deaf
- 5:30Planet. Yeah, it's just that's.
- 5:32So you know what you're getting there.
- 5:33So you. Know what you're getting?
- 5:34Yeah. It's not a paradise.
- 5:35It's not a sandals. It's a, it's very, it's the
- 5:38opposite of that. It's you're getting the time.
- 5:40Share on the death planet expect, you know, some lava,
- 5:43some lava, yeah, and and well. Everything there can kill you,
- 5:46whether it be like a vine or a plant or a seemingly, you know
- 5:50innocent looking bug can also. Everything, everything there is
- 5:54deadly. I mean, at first appearance
- 5:56anyway, I would say that watching the the way they the
- 5:59way that that was done made me feel like I, I was like watching
- 6:03sort of a Conan. Like what, what it would be like
- 6:06if they really tried to make Conan and put him in in like
- 6:09savage lands of some kind or, or even like I said, like a like a
- 6:13heavy metal magazine or something like that.
- 6:16It just looked kind of crazy and over the top and in a good way
- 6:19with like, they would show these long shots of like mountains and
- 6:22hills and stuff and there'd be like massive worms with, you
- 6:26know, crawling around the top of it or just like, you know, and
- 6:30these things are huge. Like yeah, five times the.
- 6:33Size of like a truck or something, you know like huge.
- 6:36Yeah, yeah. And there was like 1.
- 6:37There's one really cool scene where the Predator comes across
- 6:41this field that looks kind of innocent, just like, you know,
- 6:44blades of grass. Turns out it's not, you know,
- 6:47grass at all. It's like actual razors.
- 6:50Razor blades of grass, that's. Razor glass like, or grass
- 6:54rather. So that's the kind of world that
- 6:56that's what Hell Planet has to offer.
- 6:58Death for anyone. Hell.
- 6:59Planet or death planet? A death planet.
- 7:01Yeah, death planet. But it is like hell when you're
- 7:03there. Yeah, don't drag down hell
- 7:04planet into death. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:06Hell, hell, Planet is a whole. Different place, different.
- 7:08Place I think that actually is a Fresetta planet, a hell planet.
- 7:12But so this was directed by the same guy that directed the last
- 7:15two, the movie Prey and also that animated movie they
- 7:18released for Predator on on I guess Disney Plus or Hulu
- 7:22depending on where you are. Which I didn't see yet, so.
- 7:25I haven't seen it either. It's on my list, I just haven't
- 7:27gotten around to it Came out of. It was good though.
- 7:30Month and a half, two months ago.
- 7:31So, but it's the same director. They obviously trust this person
- 7:34enough to to continue using him for predator stuff.
- 7:37And I think they did, you know, he did a great job with this.
- 7:40It's it's a fun rump man. Is it it is it is what it is?
- 7:43It's it's it's a kind of coming of age story of a predator
- 7:46that's a bit of a runt who's kind of forced to do the to to
- 7:49go to this. This it's not death plan.
- 7:51It's like Yakuza prime or something.
- 7:53I don't. I can't remember.
- 7:54The name, they call it the death plan, but he actually chose it.
- 7:57Like you're right, he is forced to prove himself, but he
- 8:00ultimately gets to choose his prey and so he goes out and
- 8:03chooses the baddest almost impossible thing to kill in the
- 8:07entire Galaxy. Because he's a predator and he's
- 8:09got a. Because he's a.
- 8:10Predator and he's trying to and then and to improve impress his
- 8:13father. This is the whole, the whole
- 8:15impetus of this is for him trying to win daddy's love.
- 8:19And does Daddy kind of? Get home.
- 8:22Let's just leave it. Brick Daddy is not let's.
- 8:24Just leave it there. Daddy has got some issues, let's
- 8:29just say that. Yeah, and this is and the young
- 8:32predator has daddy issues too. So it's a combo.
- 8:35Yeah, combo. Is it like like if you saw what
- 8:38was it Creed two, I guess, where he's fighting Drago's son and
- 8:43the mother was really she hadn't he could never impress the
- 8:47mother. That was always the concern and
- 8:49then. Probably probably similar to
- 8:50that. I haven't seen that movie.
- 8:52I haven't. I haven't seen Creed one either
- 8:53to be honest with. You Creed one was good, Creed 2
- 8:55was good. We'll talk about that another
- 8:56time, but. You've gotten us off into Creed
- 8:59land now, Jay. That's another planet that.
- 9:01Creed really went like that band.
- 9:04That band, the Creed. What was that all about?
- 9:06Fantastic. Is that Christian?
- 9:08A song called Is that Planet? They might have.
- 9:11Yeah, they. Probably did, yeah.
- 9:12But it was, yeah. Why don't we, why don't we do
- 9:15shot #2 and then we can really dive deep into a little bit more
- 9:18about the Predator franchise. I want to hear about some of
- 9:20this connective tissue with aliens.
- 9:22Because as soon as Barry, you said connected to a franchise, I
- 9:24thought, oh, not aliens because they've been connected.
- 9:27But now to hear that it's officially connected is or
- 9:29something, yeah. Well, the Whaling Corp, and this
- 9:32has got to be the sleaziest company in the entire gap.
- 9:34Really. Do these guys do anything good?
- 9:36No, they don't. Yeah, the IT is.
- 9:38It is what it is. It's always the same thing with
- 9:40them. It's always the same.
- 9:42Building Better Worlds. The Whaling Corp.
- 9:45Quote UN quote. Yeah, OK.
- 9:47Well, I'm going to raise a glass of Tulum or do as well.
- 9:50Barry, I assume you got a coffee?
- 9:52I'm I'm working on it, Jay. I'm going to be working on it
- 9:54all episode long. Yeah, it's a little bare face
- 9:57and Pike. I just spilled my God damn
- 10:01London fog all over the place, no.
- 10:05No, it's. All I had.
- 10:08Turn off the gravity. Maybe it'll float around a bit.
- 10:10The molecule can catch it in your mouth.
- 10:12There's no options up here. I'm so fucked.
- 10:15Cheers to that. Yeah, yeah, get home safe,
- 10:19Robbie. Good stuff.
- 10:24I'll tell you, whiskey and coffee is by far one of man's
- 10:28greatest inventions. Hold on a second, did you
- 10:31literally just do a shot that that's insane, but OK, good.
- 10:34That's great. That's great.
- 10:36Yeah, you can't have it. Sorry, but you.
- 10:38I can't see anything. I'm in a satellite so.
- 10:41Well, hopefully you make it back down again, but while you're up
- 10:44there, have a look for the Wayland Corporation.
- 10:46Maybe if they're up there you can join them and.
- 10:48It's possible, yeah. They're.
- 10:49Probably up there. OK, so let's talk about
- 10:52Predator. I haven't seen the.
- 10:54I saw Prey, haven't seen the cartoon version, and obviously I
- 10:57haven't seen this one yet. Runtime, Barry, you said a very
- 11:01favorable runtime. What are we talking?
- 11:02About here, I'm talking an hour 47, Jay.
- 11:05This is right in the wheelhouse of like Lean.
- 11:08There's no bloat in this movie. I'm happy.
- 11:09To say no bloat. There's no bloat, even the the
- 11:12character developing scenes and there's a few of them, but they
- 11:16don't overstay their welcome. And in fact, they're kind of fun
- 11:18to watch. You know, sometimes you get
- 11:20scenes that are kind of shoehorned into action films.
- 11:22You're like, why does this even really need to be here?
- 11:24I don't care that much. That's not happening here in
- 11:27Predator. Bad Last I.
- 11:27Would say that that that's a little bit to the film's kind of
- 11:31detriment a little bit that's it's kind of yeah.
- 11:34I found that that there wasn't a ton of there was some good,
- 11:38there was some good character development, especially on Deck.
- 11:40The the main his his name's, I think his name's Deck, right
- 11:43Deck. Yep, deck.
- 11:44The main premier, you know, surprising because he doesn't
- 11:48speak English per SE, but yeah. He's the whole film.
- 11:52He's but yeah, yeah, yeah. And we won't.
- 11:55There's no reason to go into why, but yeah, it's, it's it's
- 11:59there's some good development on his side.
- 12:01The Ellie fanning synthetic character.
- 12:05There's a little more going on there.
- 12:07And it felt to me a little like I didn't really fully understand
- 12:12the motivations of of her or maybe of her, but less of other
- 12:18characters that came up down the road in the movie.
- 12:21So and like, why, why is this? I understand the main
- 12:25overarching, you know, why is Waylon Utani doing what they're
- 12:30doing? But more I just don't really
- 12:33want to spoil the, the sort of surprise of of of what that is.
- 12:38But I just found it a little bit like I would like to know a
- 12:41little more as to why everyone's kind of a bit of a Dick in a
- 12:44way. Yeah, all.
- 12:46Right. So, but there's a surprise.
- 12:48There's a bit of a surprise, yeah, that there's a bit of A
- 12:50twist, a mild twist, I would say, with the Ellie fanning
- 12:55synth character. I know Barry, and I get the
- 12:59sense that you didn't feel it was so much a surprise.
- 13:03Please discuss. Yeah, Yeah, I'm not sure that I
- 13:06was. Yeah, I'm trying to think of
- 13:07what the the the mild twist. I'm not sure that I I would
- 13:12agree with you. It was so mild twist.
- 13:13It was it was so mild. Mild.
- 13:15It was like a straightened slinky is what it was.
- 13:18I mean if. They well, not really.
- 13:20I mean honestly, like pretty obvious it was supposed to
- 13:22happen. It wasn't A twist, it was more.
- 13:25It's not like I think. It's part that's part of the
- 13:27problem in my opinion, that it was it was actually kind of
- 13:30obvious. It could have been more of a
- 13:31twist. And then there was not really,
- 13:33it wasn't really explored. It kind of it was just like, OK,
- 13:36well, now we know that that's that's what's going on and and
- 13:38that's who the evil person is in this movie, you know?
- 13:41I love how did you get? A movie.
- 13:44Sorry, Jay. It also had some humor, Rob.
- 13:47I thought it was kind of a nice addition.
- 13:49It didn't detract from it. What was your thoughts on that?
- 13:52I mean, I I laughed out loud a bunch of times.
- 13:55I believe of memory serves maybe 456 times.
- 13:59I don't know. It's not bad.
- 14:00For a laugh count. It's pretty cool.
- 14:02Yeah, Barry, do you laugh out loud?
- 14:03You don't laugh out loud as much.
- 14:05And there was some cute. There was a couple.
- 14:06There was a couple of ha ha's. Yeah, there was a couple.
- 14:09And also there was a couple of cute moments.
- 14:11And I won't go any further than that, but yeah, you wouldn't
- 14:13expect a cute moment within a Predator film.
- 14:17But surprise and and maybe if that's the twist that Rob was
- 14:20talking about, then yeah, I was completely floored by that, that
- 14:23we had some cute moments. Well.
- 14:25That wasn't the twist. I know It's not.
- 14:27Like I said, it's not really A twist.
- 14:29It could have been A twist. It just wasn't really A twist.
- 14:32It could have been A twist. Yeah, I hope you're not running
- 14:35out of air there in the in the satellite, Robbie.
- 14:37I'm if you saw the amount of space I'm you have to do this to
- 14:43do this podcast. Yeah, the length that you go to,
- 14:46it's greatly appreciated. Jamie, I'm sorry I cut you off.
- 14:49You had something to say. Though I was just.
- 14:50Worse. This is worse.
- 14:53I was just going to say, sometimes it feels like you 2 go
- 14:55to a movie and I imagine you just split off and you go to
- 14:57separate theaters and then you come back and you do a.
- 14:59Review No, no, we're. Barry's like I saw Mrs.
- 15:01Doubtfire and Rob's like I saw The Shining.
- 15:04Let's let's discuss and. And at the same time, Barry,
- 15:08Barry's A5 out of five. I'm, I'm a, I'm a 2.5 out, yeah.
- 15:12Always, actually, which is Jay. I will say the very first scene
- 15:15of the movie and there's nothing really going on.
- 15:17But I leaned over to Rob. I remember this vividly and I
- 15:20said I already love it, where it was like literally just a an
- 15:24establishing shot, the first shot of the movie, a small like
- 15:28creep in to the landscape. I kind of got the feeling you, I
- 15:32felt like you prepped that one. I felt like you had that locked
- 15:35and loaded. That was like, you know, I was.
- 15:37Prepping since the the escalator ride that took us up to the
- 15:40theater. That's when I was doing my prep.
- 15:41Yeah, well, because you did. Send me a text a day or so
- 15:44before saying, you know, giving a pretty good review of the
- 15:48movie. I then saw a review that was not
- 15:50so favorable. I didn't send that to you
- 15:52because I did not want to crush you going in.
- 15:54So I'm glad you were excited about this.
- 15:56Rob Well, whoever to hear about that.
- 15:58Favorable. I'd like to hear about that
- 15:59little review that there was sort of the negative.
- 16:01Review. I didn't.
- 16:01Read it sounds like they're off base.
- 16:02OK. Yeah, I just saw that it was
- 16:04just a headline. That's all we usually do is to
- 16:06go to the headline, and that's true.
- 16:08That's where we live. Yeah.
- 16:10I love. That that's the way to go.
- 16:11I mean, so so if you were to like put these together with
- 16:13like, let's say the last Tron movie, I would say this is a
- 16:16better movie overall. There's more character
- 16:18development, there's more it's more interesting, but it does
- 16:21have a lot of the stuff that you expect in a in a Waylon Utani
- 16:25things. So that kind of, you know, I
- 16:28mean, you know what they're going to, you know who they are,
- 16:30you know what they're going to do, and you know why they're
- 16:32there. And it's, you know, it's not
- 16:33dissimilar to like Blade Runner, you know, the, those guys are
- 16:36kind of shady guys. And the people that run the
- 16:39corporations are usually the shady folk, you know?
- 16:42Yeah, well, they're the ultimate villain nowadays, right?
- 16:44The the shady faceless corporation is just out to rape
- 16:48the planet, to rape the Galaxy, and who cares?
- 16:51Yeah, like that's. They're back.
- 16:52They were so popular in the 80s, and now they're back.
- 16:55It's a popular Trump again, and then they came back.
- 16:57All right, let's hear final star rating and then any final
- 17:02takeaways you want for our listeners and viewers that want
- 17:04to check this out. Yeah.
- 17:05Let's start with Rob, because he's running out of air.
- 17:09Yeah, fuck no. So anyway, I would say out of
- 17:16like we're doing a fiver here. I, I would go, I would say this
- 17:19is like AI don't know, you know, I want to say 3 1/2, but I'm,
- 17:26I'm somewhere probably closer to AI would say a three and a 3 1/2
- 17:31out of. Five, 3 1/2 OK. 3 1/2 it's
- 17:33enjoyable. It's a great it's a fun movie.
- 17:34Maybe maybe a little more like, I don't know, a little higher.
- 17:37I don't I don't think I'd go straight to an 80, but it's it's
- 17:39maybe a little bit like a 75 out of 10 out of 100.
- 17:42I mean, you know what? I'm.
- 17:44So we'll go 3 1/2, three and a half.
- 17:46We'll give you on the side. I love that you had like all
- 17:47kinds of scales for us. You had three and a half, 80%
- 17:49and out of 100. Well, yeah, it's just I, I roll
- 17:52them. All in the average is an apple.
- 17:54He gives it an apple. I give it 1 apple out of 10.
- 17:58I would give it literally I would give it 4 bags of popcorn
- 18:01and nice and then on I would I would include a little one of
- 18:05those little one of those little steak knives that you would
- 18:08find. So I would make that like
- 18:10another bag of corn. OK, perfect.
- 18:13Yeah. And.
- 18:14Bags of corn and a steak knife. How, Barry, how do you work?
- 18:17Same scale. My scale is going to be a little
- 18:19more a little different. I'm going to go ahead and say
- 18:22that this, OK, you know, I'm going to interrupt.
- 18:24I'm going to interrupt, I'm going to interrupt.
- 18:26I'm going to interrupt. I'm going to interrupt.
- 18:27Please. I just know that this is going
- 18:30to be and I'm not going to give the score, but this this movie
- 18:34for Barry was was the Citizen Kane of modern times.
- 18:39There we. Have it?
- 18:40Yes. This was, I mean, equivalent.
- 18:43I mean, if you were to put them side by side, he'd probably go,
- 18:45I'm not really interested in. I'm going to watch the Badlands.
- 18:48I'm all in, yeah. Yeah, thank you, Rob you.
- 18:51But you basically summed it up. I had a hell of a good time.
- 18:54It thought this was, it's the first Predator film where the
- 18:57Predator is the main guy. We're following his journey.
- 19:00He's not just a side character that's, you know, killing
- 19:04everybody and you're just trying to escape from him.
- 19:06So that was kind of interesting. I like the fact that this was a
- 19:09sort of a fresh story. We hadn't really seen this
- 19:12before. And I'd like I said, the action,
- 19:15it looked incredible. There was some really amazing
- 19:18fight sequences. For me, it's a perfect movie.
- 19:20I'm going to give this baby five out of five.
- 19:23There we go. Get to the theater.
- 19:26Go see it. I can't wait to see it again,
- 19:28actually, because it has like, but there's also some heart
- 19:31there and I don't know. I'm a sucker for heart.
- 19:34What can I tell you? So it's another, it's.
- 19:36This is the. It's a perfect movie if you're
- 19:38keeping. Score This is the 10th of
- 19:40Barry's top three films of. 2020 aren't enough stars for this
- 19:44film. I'm telling you right now this.
- 19:46All right, guys, the real the real score is 3 1/2 out of five,
- 19:49so it's. Not well.
- 19:51This is why you guys diverge. You guys diverge at the lobby
- 19:54and you come back and we get 2 reviews.
- 19:56And This is why we have dueling viewpoints on this.
- 19:59And occasionally even I see one of these movies.
- 20:01But we've we've said enough for one day.
- 20:04Rob, thank you so much for being here.
- 20:06I know it was tough to connect in through space, especially
- 20:09with the oxygen levels, what they are now.
- 20:11You've run out of your London fogs.
- 20:13Yeah. Hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 20:15One second, one second. Drift away.
- 20:16Hey, it's Jeff Bezos. I got to go.
- 20:18I got to go. I got to go.
- 20:19Yeah, Bezos. Bezos is here.
- 20:21Barry, you'll be here next week and we will get Rob back one
- 20:25day. So if he gets down back into the
- 20:27atmosphere, have a great night, no?
