- 0:06Speaker 1: The other girl and Harper.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I'm not with the other girl. It's a patient in
- 0:12Speaker 2: the car. Yes, okay, can you pull over because we're
- 0:18Speaker 2: going to start CPR. No, I need you to stay
- 0:25Speaker 2: on the line between.
- 0:27Speaker 1: You're watching totally true crime. Katie Simpson was a special
- 0:36Speaker 1: human being. She grew up in County Ammara in Northern Ireland.
- 0:42Speaker 1: It's a beautiful place with so much greenery, wildlife and
- 0:47Speaker 1: a sense of community. Katie had two sisters and all
- 0:52Speaker 1: of them loved to play outside and when they were
- 0:55Speaker 1: old enough, they started to learn how to ride horses.
- 0:59Speaker 1: But for Kate it became one of her biggest passions.
- 1:03Speaker 1: When she finished school, she got a job in a
- 1:06Speaker 1: stable yard and she would spend hours looking after the horses,
- 1:11Speaker 1: riding them, show jumping and socializing with others from the
- 1:16Speaker 1: horse riding community. In twenty twenty, Katie had started to
- 1:22Speaker 1: see a boy she met through the riding community. His
- 1:26Speaker 1: name was Shane McCluskey. Katie was living with her sister Christina,
- 1:32Speaker 1: her brother in law, Jonathan Creswell, and their two children.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Jonathan was also part of the horse riding community, but
- 1:42Speaker 1: on Saturday, the first of August twenty twenty, Katie stayed
- 1:46Speaker 1: at her mother's house with her new partner, Shane. Shane
- 1:50Speaker 1: left the next morning, and after he left, Katie sent
- 1:55Speaker 1: him this message, I'm glad you came Shane with I
- 2:01Speaker 1: am two. But then something changed and Katie asked Shane
- 2:07Speaker 1: to hide the fact they'd spent the night together. Katie
- 2:11Speaker 1: was not married, she did not have another boyfriend, her
- 2:15Speaker 1: parents were okay with Shane's staying over, and Shane didn't
- 2:19Speaker 1: have any other partners, so why did she want their
- 2:23Speaker 1: relationship to be hidden. Shane didn't hear from Katie for
- 2:27Speaker 1: the rest of the day. In fact, he didn't ever
- 2:31Speaker 1: hear from her again. At eighteen am on the third
- 2:35Speaker 1: of August twenty twenty, Jonathan Creswell, Katie's brother in law,
- 2:41Speaker 1: arrived home after dropping his two young children to his mother's.
- 2:46Speaker 1: He was on the phone to a woman he knew.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Her name was Hailey rob and as Jonathan walked through
- 2:52Speaker 1: the front door, he screamed to Haley that he could
- 2:55Speaker 1: see Katie hanging. He told her to call Night and
- 3:01Speaker 1: she gave the operator Jonathan's phone number. By this time,
- 3:06Speaker 1: he'd got Katie down and was driving her to the
- 3:09Speaker 1: local hospital.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I know way the other girl at Harper. I'm not
- 3:14Speaker 2: the other girls. It's a patient in the car. Yes,
- 3:20Speaker 2: not just real okay, okay, even if you can pull over?
- 3:24Speaker 2: Are you in the car at the moment? Is the
- 3:25Speaker 2: car moving? Okay? Yes? Can you pull over because we're
- 3:31Speaker 2: going to start CPR. No, oh, this guy, this car
- 3:37Speaker 2: we guard. I need you to stay on the lineless
- 3:39Speaker 2: week hilder, she hi older, she quite fick.
- 3:45Speaker 1: The operator tells Jonathan to pull over and to start
- 3:48Speaker 1: giving Katie CPR.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Okay, just go one, two, three, four, Just point out
- 3:54Speaker 2: loud for me, just so I know you're doing the
- 3:56Speaker 2: right rhythm. There.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Very fun. Paramedics arrive on the scene, but when they
- 4:03Speaker 1: examined Katie, they found that she had no heartbeat and
- 4:06Speaker 1: she wasn't breathing. They also noticed that she was only
- 4:11Speaker 1: wearing underwear on her bottom half. She was taken to
- 4:15Speaker 1: the hospital and placed on life support, and it was
- 4:19Speaker 1: then that her family got the devastating news that their
- 4:23Speaker 1: incredible daughter and talented sister was fighting for her life.
- 4:29Speaker 1: They had to hear that she'd been found hanging and
- 4:32Speaker 1: tried to come to terms with that, as well as
- 4:35Speaker 1: hoping and praying that Katie would recover, but she never did.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Katie Simpson died six days after she was found on
- 4:44Speaker 1: the ninth of August twenty twenty. She was just twenty
- 4:48Speaker 1: one years old. As news started to travel that Katie
- 4:52Speaker 1: had died by suicide, everyone who knew her was in
- 4:56Speaker 1: utter disbelief. She was loved, she had a new romance,
- 5:02Speaker 1: a job she enjoyed, and a social circle of like
- 5:05Speaker 1: minded people who she adored. Suicide is often met with
- 5:10Speaker 1: complete shock. We never know what internal battles people are facing,
- 5:15Speaker 1: and with Katie, there had been absolutely no signs that
- 5:20Speaker 1: anyone could identify that made them think she'd wanted to
- 5:23Speaker 1: end her life. Katie's post mortem revealed some injuries that
- 5:29Speaker 1: weren't conducive to hanging. She had bruises on her limbs,
- 5:33Speaker 1: but they were explained away by two people Jonathan Creswell,
- 5:38Speaker 1: her brother in law, and a woman called Rose Demontorency Right.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Both of them said that they'd seen her fall off
- 5:47Speaker 1: a horse and that those bruises were the result of
- 5:50Speaker 1: the fall, but the pathologists said that the pattern of
- 5:54Speaker 1: bruising didn't fit with falling from a horse. Instead, they
- 5:59Speaker 1: looked like they'd been made by a rod or something similar.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It was like she'd been struck. She had bruising on
- 6:08Speaker 1: her thigh and she'd been bleeding from her private paths.
- 6:12Speaker 1: She also had defensive wounds on her hands. The pathologist
- 6:17Speaker 1: said that she could have died by hanging, but stressed
- 6:20Speaker 1: the conclusion has only come from statements given by Jonathan
- 6:25Speaker 1: Creswell and Hailey Robb, a woman that Jonathan was on
- 6:28Speaker 1: the phone to when he found her. This conclusion was
- 6:32Speaker 1: not determined from her injuries. A forensic post morton was
- 6:37Speaker 1: also ordered and a police officer attended. The officer noted
- 6:42Speaker 1: that DNA swabs were being done and they would help
- 6:45Speaker 1: determine if Katie had been sexually assaulted. The officers were
- 6:50Speaker 1: shocked when Katie's death was ruled as non suspicious. As
- 6:55Speaker 1: per tradition, a wake was held in Katie's mother's home
- 7:00Speaker 1: and Katie's body was placed in a coffin in her
- 7:03Speaker 1: beloved riding jacket. Her niece placed a picture she'd drawn
- 7:08Speaker 1: for her into the coffin, and her family and friends
- 7:11Speaker 1: paid their respects. They were consumed by grief and Katie
- 7:17Speaker 1: was laid to rest. But this is not the end
- 7:20Speaker 1: of Katie's story because Katie Simpson did not die by suicide,
- 7:27Speaker 1: she was murdered. Who killed Katie Simpson. The answer to
- 7:33Speaker 1: that question is her brother in law, Jonathan Creswell. Jonathan,
- 7:39Speaker 1: known to some as Johnny, was a firm pillar in
- 7:41Speaker 1: the riding community, and whilst he did have a talent
- 7:45Speaker 1: for horse riding, he was perceived by many as a
- 7:49Speaker 1: sleez a creep an arrogance. He was loud and brash,
- 7:54Speaker 1: constantly drawing attention towards his outlandish behavior that his dark
- 8:00Speaker 1: side would reveal itself frequently. The riding community was full
- 8:06Speaker 1: of women and girls, and Jonathan used it as his
- 8:09Speaker 1: hunting ground. He would seduce women and underage girls, often
- 8:15Speaker 1: becoming violent towards them. In two thousand and eight, he
- 8:19Speaker 1: met a girl called Abigail. He charmed her with his
- 8:22Speaker 1: humor and thoughtful actions. Though these were a facade, they
- 8:28Speaker 1: struck up a relationship which quickly turned violent. On Valentine's Day,
- 8:34Speaker 1: he beat her up in his car and he threatened
- 8:37Speaker 1: to kill her. His violence continued throughout his relationship with her.
- 8:44Speaker 1: On one occasion, after reading a message from an old
- 8:47Speaker 1: school friend on her phone, he drove her to the
- 8:50Speaker 1: woods and threatened to kill her and went on to
- 8:54Speaker 1: attack her for hours. Just because this friend was a male,
- 9:00Speaker 1: Jonathan would often choke Abagail, knowing that it terrified her.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Nine months later, Abagail found the strength to go to
- 9:08Speaker 1: the police and she made a nineteen page statement documenting
- 9:13Speaker 1: the abuse she had received from Jonathan. The following year,
- 9:17Speaker 1: Jonathan was sentenced to six months in prison, but upon
- 9:22Speaker 1: his release, he immersed himself right back into the riding community,
- 9:27Speaker 1: even getting a gig as an actor on a television
- 9:31Speaker 1: advert for the Grand National. Whilst many stayed away from him,
- 9:36Speaker 1: many others in the community stood by him. He was
- 9:40Speaker 1: given a welcome home party thrown by some of his
- 9:43Speaker 1: fellow riders, even though they knew he'd been in prison
- 9:48Speaker 1: for abusing and strangling a young woman. Jonathan continued to
- 9:53Speaker 1: infiltrate the lives of women, and eventually he formed a
- 9:56Speaker 1: relationship with Christina, Katie's sister, and they had two children together,
- 10:03Speaker 1: but their relationship was not a happy one. Jonathan exercised
- 10:07Speaker 1: extreme coercive control towards Christina, but her fear of Jonathan
- 10:13Speaker 1: meant that she never confided in anyone. What was also
- 10:18Speaker 1: so incredibly disturbing was that Jonathan had been grooming her sister,
- 10:23Speaker 1: Katie from the age of ten years old. It was
- 10:27Speaker 1: because of this that, at the age of eighteen, Jonathan
- 10:30Speaker 1: convinced Katie to move into their family home. She would
- 10:35Speaker 1: visit her mother, but tell her not to tell anyone
- 10:38Speaker 1: that she'd been there. Her mother always believed that this
- 10:42Speaker 1: is because she thought Katie was striving off work, but
- 10:46Speaker 1: the reality was far worse. Jonathan was controlling every aspect
- 10:52Speaker 1: of both Katie and Christina's lives. He had the passwords
- 10:57Speaker 1: to their bank accounts, their social media profiles, and their phones,
- 11:02Speaker 1: and their family had no idea. Jonathan didn't only have
- 11:07Speaker 1: them under his control. He was also in other secret,
- 11:12Speaker 1: controlling and abusive relationships with women and girls who worked
- 11:17Speaker 1: in the stable yard. He would have sex in the
- 11:20Speaker 1: stables with some of them, whilst others watched out for him.
- 11:24Speaker 1: People were scared of Jonathan Creswell. On the night Katie
- 11:29Speaker 1: had stayed at her mother's house with her new partner, Shane,
- 11:33Speaker 1: Jonathan had sent Katie a message on Snapchat. It said,
- 11:38Speaker 1: you need to reply to my snap right effing now.
- 11:43Speaker 1: This had been why she hadn't wanted Shane to tell
- 11:46Speaker 1: anyone about their new relationship. Jonathan Creswell was told that
- 11:51Speaker 1: Shane's car had been seen driving away from Katie's mother's house,
- 11:55Speaker 1: and it sent him into a jealous rage. Katie asked
- 12:00Speaker 1: Shane to hide all their messages and any evidence that
- 12:03Speaker 1: they've been together, but Shane messaged her and said, Katie,
- 12:09Speaker 1: is it not just easier to say the truth? This
- 12:12Speaker 1: makes me look really bad? She replied, no way, He'll
- 12:18Speaker 1: go crazy. Please don't, He'll kill me. Katie then went
- 12:24Speaker 1: on too a horse show, and sure enough, Jonathan Creswell
- 12:28Speaker 1: turned up. When the show was over, he made Katie
- 12:32Speaker 1: leave in the back of a horse box with him
- 12:34Speaker 1: with their friend Rose Demntmency right though she was not
- 12:39Speaker 1: in the back of the horse box with them, she
- 12:41Speaker 1: was driving. They first traveled to a horse yard that
- 12:45Speaker 1: belonged to another woman called Jill Robinson. Jonathan and Katie
- 12:50Speaker 1: then left the yard together and they were gone for hours,
- 12:55Speaker 1: driving for miles and miles. During this time, Katie's his
- 13:00Speaker 1: mobile phone showed no activity, but at that time Jonathan
- 13:06Speaker 1: was in possession of Katie's phone. He'd come across a
- 13:10Speaker 1: message from Shane that confirmed that he and Katie were
- 13:13Speaker 1: in a romantic relationship. This fueled Jonathan's rage further, and
- 13:19Speaker 1: he assaulted Katie multiple times. They eventually arrived back home
- 13:24Speaker 1: and Jonathan spent most of the night in Katy's bedroom,
- 13:28Speaker 1: whilst his partner, Kati's sister, Christina, slept in the room
- 13:32Speaker 1: next door with their two children. In the morning, as
- 13:37Speaker 1: she got ready for work, Christina saw her husband and
- 13:40Speaker 1: her sister in bed together. This was at four thirty am,
- 13:45Speaker 1: and she left for work at six am. Christina was
- 13:50Speaker 1: too scared to confront her husband. Around seven point fifteen am,
- 13:56Speaker 1: Shane tried to call Katie after countless messages he sent
- 14:00Speaker 1: went unanswered, but those messages were read. They were read
- 14:05Speaker 1: by Jonathan. Furious, Jonathan then attacked Katie and started strangling her.
- 14:13Speaker 1: His three year old and six month old baby were
- 14:16Speaker 1: in the house at the time. Jonathan then drove his
- 14:21Speaker 1: children to his mother's and then he came back to
- 14:24Speaker 1: the house whilst he was on the phone to Hailey
- 14:26Speaker 1: rob who he was due to meet that morning for sex.
- 14:30Speaker 1: And whilst he was on that call, he pretended to
- 14:33Speaker 1: find Katie hanging. He then put Katie in his car
- 14:38Speaker 1: and drove her to the nearest hospital. It was then
- 14:41Speaker 1: that he called for an ambulance and pretended to do CPR.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Okay, just go one, two, three four, just pint out
- 14:50Speaker 2: lied for me, just so I know you're doing the.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Right breadom there vere con.
- 14:57Speaker 1: When they arrived at the hospital, only immediate family were
- 15:01Speaker 1: allowed by Katie's bedside. She was placed on life support,
- 15:05Speaker 1: and because it was August twenty twenty, COVID restrictions meant
- 15:10Speaker 1: that only a few people were allowed to be with her.
- 15:14Speaker 1: One of those people was Jonathan Creswell. Katie couldn't escape
- 15:19Speaker 1: Jonathan even as she lay dying in her hospital bed,
- 15:25Speaker 1: but Jonathan had women who were prepared to do anything
- 15:28Speaker 1: for him, whilst Katie's family kept figil by her bedside.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Jonathan returned home, where he met up with Hailey rob
- 15:38Speaker 1: She helped Jonathan clean the crime scene, including some of
- 15:41Speaker 1: Katie's blood. She hid Jonathan's bloody clothes in the back
- 15:46Speaker 1: of her car and then drove him back to the hospital.
- 15:51Speaker 1: The police asked Jonathan where Katie's mobile phone was. He
- 15:55Speaker 1: said that she didn't have one. They said they wanted
- 15:59Speaker 1: to search his home, and he deliberately gave them the
- 16:01Speaker 1: wrong door number. The medical staff were documenting marks that
- 16:06Speaker 1: they found on Katie's body, the bruise on her thigh,
- 16:10Speaker 1: the bleeding from her private parts, and the bruises on
- 16:14Speaker 1: her limbs. One of the nurses was so concerned about
- 16:18Speaker 1: her injuries and Jonathan's constant presence at Katie's bedside, that
- 16:23Speaker 1: she went to the police station and begged them to
- 16:25Speaker 1: treat him as a suspect. They looked up Jonathan's previous
- 16:30Speaker 1: criminal history, and in error, the officer only saw traffic offenses.
- 16:36Speaker 1: He didn't see that he had been in prison for
- 16:38Speaker 1: six months for abusing and threatening to kill his ex partner.
- 16:43Speaker 1: So Jonathan continued to be allowed to be with Katie
- 16:46Speaker 1: at her bedside, alongside her mother and sisters as she
- 16:51Speaker 1: took her last breath. At Katy's funeral, Jonathan was one
- 16:56Speaker 1: of the people who carried her coffin. He dominated the funeral,
- 17:00Speaker 1: shaking hands with mourners and drawing attention to himself, But
- 17:05Speaker 1: not everyone was fooled, and some of the mourners started
- 17:09Speaker 1: to suspect that Jonathan was involved in Katie's death. After
- 17:15Speaker 1: her funeral, more and more people who knew Katie and
- 17:18Speaker 1: Jonathan had time to reflect on the whole horrific situation,
- 17:24Speaker 1: and they started asking questions. Katie's mother, Noline, went to
- 17:29Speaker 1: the police and said she was having serious doubts that
- 17:33Speaker 1: Katie's death was a suicide and questioned why she would
- 17:37Speaker 1: take her own life wearing so little clothes, knowing that
- 17:41Speaker 1: she would be found. Police officers started to also ask
- 17:45Speaker 1: questions and question the decision that had been made to
- 17:49Speaker 1: rule Katie's death as non suspicious. Their resistance by their
- 17:53Speaker 1: superiors and their pleased to investigate her death went ignored,
- 17:58Speaker 1: but they continued to pie the pressure onto them, and
- 18:01Speaker 1: eventually they started to consider that they might have got
- 18:05Speaker 1: it wrong, and they looked into Katie Simpson's death again.
- 18:10Speaker 1: A few weeks later, they arrested Jonathan Creswell on suspicion
- 18:14Speaker 1: of Katie Simpson's rape and murder, and he was subsequently
- 18:18Speaker 1: charged almost instantly. He admitted to burying Katie's phone, but
- 18:25Speaker 1: he did not admit to killing her. Unbelievably, this dangerous
- 18:30Speaker 1: man with previous convictions for strangling a woman was let
- 18:34Speaker 1: out on bail. Katie's loved ones couldn't believe it, But
- 18:39Speaker 1: what was even more unbelievable was that Jonathan still had
- 18:43Speaker 1: the support of some of the riding community. He was
- 18:48Speaker 1: seen with underage teenage girls in his car whilst he
- 18:51Speaker 1: was out on bail. Whilst Jonathan awaited trial, three women
- 18:57Speaker 1: were giving suspended sentences for helping him cover up Katie's murder.
- 19:03Speaker 1: They were Hailey Robb, Jill Robinson, and Rose Demontmency right.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Jill Robinson had also covered up for him when he
- 19:13Speaker 1: strangled his ex girlfriend, Aber Girl. Other details regarding Jonathan's
- 19:18Speaker 1: abuse and control of all of these women plus others
- 19:22Speaker 1: started to emerge. Rose had also lived with Jonathan and
- 19:27Speaker 1: Christina in the past, and Jonathan often called Rose his queen.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Many of these women also took out huge loans for him,
- 19:37Speaker 1: including Katie. Jonathan had made Katie take out a ten
- 19:42Speaker 1: thousand pound loan and another woman had taken out a
- 19:46Speaker 1: fifteen thousand pound loan just for him. Jonathan had even
- 19:52Speaker 1: asked Katie's mother for money when they were in hospital
- 19:56Speaker 1: as her daughter lay dying on life support. Jonathan Creswell's
- 20:02Speaker 1: trial started in April twenty twenty four, but the trial
- 20:07Speaker 1: only lasted one day because on the second day of
- 20:10Speaker 1: his trial, Jonathan was found dead in his home he
- 20:15Speaker 1: had taken his own life.
- 20:17Speaker 3: We did not do enough initially in responding to some
- 20:22Speaker 3: of the concerns who were being raised. Even our systems
- 20:27Speaker 3: failed to identify Creswell's previous significant and related serious offending.
- 20:36Speaker 3: In my view, this is less about individual officers' actions
- 20:40Speaker 3: and more about this organization not getting this right, and
- 20:44Speaker 3: that's not acceptable. I can't apologize enough to the family
- 20:48Speaker 3: for the delay in getting the right response, which happened
- 20:53Speaker 3: four months later.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Katie's mother paid tribute to her outside the court.
- 21:01Speaker 2: It's heart breaking to know the offering that Master called
- 21:03Speaker 2: Katie true.
- 21:05Speaker 1: You can't imagine anyone could do such a thing, and Katie.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Will try our hearts to fight back.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Could you love life? Not?
- 21:14Speaker 2: How we will? Trial has lived an overwhelming sense of injustice.
- 21:17Speaker 3: It's hard breathing to know we'll never see Katie's smile again.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Katie's passion for horses, fear and his talent, and her
- 21:25Speaker 2: love for Famian friends and her love will.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Be The memories will be wiki. Katie Simpson will forever
- 21:35Speaker 1: be remembered as a talented, loved, and incredible woman. Jonathan
- 21:41Speaker 1: Creswell will be remembered as a coward, a bully, an abuser,
- 21:47Speaker 1: and a murderer. If you, or somebody you know is
- 21:51Speaker 1: struggling with a controlling or abusive relationship, please see the
