Speaker 3: Okay. So let's dive in. Marina, thank you for joining us today.
• 2:05
Speaker 2: Having me. I'm so excited to be here, guys.
• 2:07
Speaker 3: Thank you. Well, Larroude has such a cool background, and your time in fashion has been iconic too. You've been fashion director at Barney's and Teen Vogue, and then you launched your own brand. So I wanna get into all of that. And you're a very busy woman.
• 2:25
Thanks for making this work. You just made the Footwear News Women in Powerlist. Yeah. That's a big deal. So excited.
• 2:31
  Speaker 2: Yes. Yes.
• 2:32
Speaker 3: And and Amazing. Yes. Starting your own brand must have been like really exciting and challenging. I know we spoke about it being a COVID baby. But talk about that with us and, Tell the viewers because
• 2:47
Speaker 4: we were downstairs talking for an hour. So we got a little bit behind the scenes, but it's a very interesting story.
• 2:53
Speaker 2: So I had the most amazing career in fashion. I moved to New York and love, love, love fashion. So I work at Conde Nast as an editor of fashion director at style.com back in the day, which today it's vogue.com. Then I was at Tin Vogue, fashiondirects are there. Then I went to retail, was fashiondirect at Barney's.
• 3:10
And when the pandemic hit, it was I found myself without a job at home with my husband, Ricardo, and it was when we set up to do this. It was a matter of, let's say four to five, six months time that from scratch to literally like putting a mood board together to then opening the website. And it was, we launched a fashion footwear brand on December 2020 when there was no vaccine. It was really Nobody was going to Nobody the wearing shoes. But you know, no one was wearing even shoes.
• 3:42
  Speaker 4: Right, nobody
• 3:42
Speaker 2: was And wearing like, why are you doing this? And I think because we had survived the financial crisis, survived. Because we had Gone through it. Gone through, you know, the financial crisis. And then I'd seen the boom of retail a couple of years later, I was like, Listen, we're gonna set up a company for the future, not for the moment that we're living now.
• 4:02
This shall pass as well. So it was a good time actually to do a company because we were
• 4:09
Speaker 4: home. You were home alone.
• 4:10
Speaker 2: We couldn't do anything, we might as well just use that time to be very productive and that's what we set up to do. We bootstrap it all. We did out of our dining room. I remember at the time I was talking to a lot of my friends who were also founders and I was asking them, How do you open, how do you do your website and then they send us to so many agencies and we're like, no, I cannot afford to pay $50,000 for somebody else to design my website. So we did it.
• 4:40
We did it ourselves on like PowerPoint and, you know, hire a developer and it was crazy fun times.
• 4:47
Speaker 3: Because you had all those skills, like it's just about applying them in a new way. And your husband who has a different background too in finance, so that team
• 4:58
Speaker 2: We really divided and conquered. And we were like, okay, you do this, I do this. And that's what we did since day one. Start working with the samples. The kids saw literally drawings on paper to then come a first set of samples, to then come a first order.
• 5:19
And I guess the most fulfilling moment in that time it was when people start shopping Larroude that they didn't know us because for the first month it was just my friends, you know, I was like, oh it's lovely, but need more people to, you
• 5:36
Speaker 4: know, Get buy one order, Kim.
• 5:38
Speaker 3: Yeah. What roles did your kids play in this? Were they giving input when you were designing?
• 5:44
Speaker 4: Oh, they were very young. Oh, they were very young.
• 5:47
Speaker 2: My daughter, she was very into we used to go to restaurants early on. And do remember at restaurants when you could scan the QR code? She was like, Dad, why don't you use the QR code in your business card? And Ricardo, And was very excited about he was like, No, I'm gonna do something I don't know. And then he really thought about it and he designed something unique that he created a QR code that goes into each sole of our shoes and goes inside the box that any client can scan it and then they get a $20 credit.
• 6:24
Oh, that's amazing. And then if they share like, Oh, I love your shoes. And you're like, Okay, I'm gonna share my link. Then each time someone buys that shoe from you, then you get a $20 and they get a $20 So then that came from my daughter asking like That's why young people
• 6:40
Speaker 4: today are changing the world. We can't think, and we say this all the time, we can't think in the old ways. Everything is new now. Everything is becoming a different world, certainly over the phone and over all your digital Devices. Devices.
• 6:56
Thank you, Kim. And I think that's we have to think that way. It's like they were you know, we can't have old people in charge. We need young people like you.
• 7:04
Speaker 2: They're always bringing me to us.
• 7:06
Speaker 4: And then they will think of new things.
• 7:08
Speaker 3: But that doesn't mean that your voices and opinions aren't useful. No,
• 7:14
Speaker 4: our voices are very strong but the truth is we're usually not innovative.
• 7:21
Speaker 3: So you need the partnership. You need to say, Oh, this has worked before. History repeats itself and all that. That's true. And you know what works and then maybe having that new perspective.
• 7:32
  You're hanging
• 7:32
Speaker 4: out with me too long, Kim.
• 7:34
Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, I'm just saying, like, this is a partnership between you and I, and, like, you need those both perspectives. Exactly. Exactly. It's a similar thing.
• 7:41
  And I think
• 7:41
Speaker 2: it was very much between Ricardo and I as cofounders of the company because I've been in the fashion industry for twenty years and he was not in finance. So for him, he already comes with a very disruptive point of view. Right. And it was a time that a lot of things in fashion was changing, right? The wholesale model or print and all those things.
• 8:02
So he would be like, if we go if we take this route, we're gonna die. Right. If you look around. Yep. Right?
• 8:07
So it was always, again, my all the things that I knew, then I had to break those Those molds. Rules and molds because those won't exist anymore. So we were constantly challenging each other, is which is great. Yeah. Which is great.
• 8:24
Speaker 3: And footwear is obviously your bread and butter. You're gonna come out with a bag soon.
• 8:29
Speaker 2: We are launching handbags.
• 8:30
Speaker 3: Will that have the QR code asked?
• 8:32
Speaker 2: Yes. Amazing. All of our products will have the QR code and
• 8:35
  Speaker 4: hopefully to
• 8:36
Speaker 2: launch handbags very soon.
• 8:37
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 8:37
Speaker 2: We are super excited about.
• 8:39
Speaker 3: That's my favorite thing because I feel like I always look at someone and I'm like, I wish I could just go like this and know where their outfit was from. And obviously you still have to go up to the person and ask them to scan their
• 8:50
Speaker 2: You know, there are a lot
• 8:50
Speaker 3: of times that I do even like do a screenshot and reverse Google search. Reverse think that's a great idea. What about your upbringing in Brazil influenced the brand?
• 9:06
Speaker 2: I think coming from Brazil, we used to wear a lot of color clearly, so it's something that I really loved and I realized back in the day when I first come to New York, editors used to wear black. It was such a thing. The Gorgio Armani look. Yes, And I was like, I'm gonna send out if I'm gonna if I'm just show up like myself. So I always use that wildcard, which is not, but then just, you know, I saw that color print, all of that was a big differentiator for me and the other editors.
• 9:39
And then when launching Larroude, it was the same thing. I was like, if I do quite luxury, where am I gonna go? Everyone's already doing that, right? So we set up to do printed shoes, fun, whimsical pieces. And, you know, coincidentally, there was a time when there was revenge shopping, when there was a vaccine and no one wanted to buy black.
• 9:58
  They wanted to buy
• 9:59
Speaker 4: But it was decided to go out in the world again
• 10:02
Speaker 2: want and experience to buy a flower shoe. So then they came to us. One thing led to another coincidentally. Serendipity Yeah.
• 10:10
  Speaker 4: In a way.
• 10:11
Speaker 3: Yeah. And I feel like that maximalist look is popular still. I mean, and you do have, like, technically, the heels you're wearing today are kinda quite luxury Yes. Vibe. So I feel like you have a mix of
• 10:24
Speaker 2: What I like to do is I believe that footwear, it's a product that you can be you and you can style as you want, so it's not so templat y that everyone, even though we can be wearing the same shoe, we can all, like both of us, all three of us, we can wear the same shoe and I think that's the beauty of Larroude, right? Or any doesn't other matter your age, could be like 16 to, you know, 85, we can all wear the same, like sneaker, ballerina, flat, and that's the beauty that you can bring your own point of view and style into the piece that you're wearing. So you can wear something that is quiet with a fun outfit or you can make your shoe statement. Mhmm.
• 11:06
Speaker 3: What staple shoe do you think both a grandmother and granddaughter can have in their closet?
• 11:11
  Speaker 2: I think a ballet flat
• 11:12
Speaker 3: like I you guys are wearing
• 11:13
Speaker 2: guess we both are. Yeah. We are. We are.
• 11:16
Speaker 3: Is there any advice your grandparents, if you were close to them or parents, gave you about starting a brand or just a fashion tip?
• 11:24
Speaker 2: No, not at all. But I remember when I was a kid, the thing that I would love the most, it was going shopping with my grandma and I was eight and we would go to a shoe store and I used to buy Melissa. Do you remember like those rubbery shoes that has like strawberry
• 11:40
  Speaker 3: Yes.
• 11:42
Speaker 2: So, I always love to do that more than buying a doll or anything. It's funny that years later you do what At least I don't have to buy more shoes but you know I'm still in that scene.
• 11:54
Speaker 3: Right, you gravitate toward that your whole life that's so interesting and also in your fashion experience obviously, you've been doing it since you're young and She's still young. You're still young. Very long time. Were there any mistakes you were making or, like, any devil wears Prada moment where you're like, oh, shit.
• 12:14
Speaker 2: Oh my God. Yes. All the time. But you know what? I find that I'd rather take the mistake.
• 12:18
I'd rather like wear the look. My mom used to tell me like, oh my God, no one had uglier shoes than you did when you were a kid. I'm like, yeah, it served me. You know? And I played the same role with my kids.
• 12:29
I'm like, go play with your creativity, wear the outfit, wear the shoe, be playful. Because we were just talking before that on being creative, could be with language, writing, and I find that playing with outfits is also part of your creative Testing things that could work or could not work, and a lot of things at Larroude, we test things very fast too.
• 12:54
Speaker 3: Yeah. That's so fair because I feel like I am scared to take risks sometimes. And like, I feel like that's why I'm always asking my grandma for fashion advice because I I genuinely don't trust whether something looks good unless doesn't
• 13:10
Speaker 4: have confidence in her own look and she has a great look.
• 13:13
  Speaker 2: She
• 13:13
Speaker 4: does? Every single person that looks at you says, Oh my gosh, your granddaughter looks fabulous.
• 13:18
Speaker 3: But I feel like it's because you helped them put it together.
• 13:20
Speaker 4: Well, you know what? I think some you don't think about it as much as I do. We've discussed I do.
• 13:27
Speaker 2: Have to think about it all day long.
• 13:29
Speaker 4: Yeah, but your closet does not reflect that. So my advice to people who can make decisions are put your shoes in one area. Think about them with the pants that you would wear with them. Don't have them scattered all over the place so you don't Organize know what your closet, organize your fashion statements, and then put it sort of with the shirt or the sweater close to each other so that you could grab it. Like in the morning, you don't have to think, Oh my gosh, what's going go with that pair of pants?
• 13:58
What shoe am I going to wear with that? If you do it even the night before, if you know you have an appointment, it cuts out so much stress the following day. Just sort of like when we went to school, at least I did We had to lay our clothes out at night, we didn't have a uniform, we had to really do it and think about it, well, will those jeans go with that sweater with those shoes? And I think look at how beautiful she looks with all the different components, a fabulous jacket, a pair of jeans, which are nothing, everybody has a pair of jeans in their closet, and her beautiful shoes. But one good piece sometimes in a closet, one good pair of shoes can go for many years.
• 14:40
You just recycle it into different looks, which is, I believe is a very strong point.
• 14:45
Speaker 2: But I have a funny story. I always have like my favorite pieces, right? Like today, and I like to have my own things. So today I'm like, okay, I'm gonna wear my favorite jacket. So, you know, and then I can wear with a jeans.
• 14:57
And when I was interviewing for the Barneys job, I had this green tie dye dress from Altuzara that I love and I loved it so much and I feel like my bassinet. So I was like, okay, I'm gonna wear this to my interview. And I did. But the interview process took six months and I met with so many people. So then later on after I took the job, my boss at the time, she's like, oh, you really love that dress.
• 15:23
You've come meet me twice with So the same imagine the interview for the Barneys Fashion Director job and wearing the same printed dress with the same
• 15:33
  Speaker 3: I
• 15:34
Speaker 4: was like, you know what it took? They should have hired you faster. That was the moral of that story.
• 15:39
Speaker 3: Yeah. True. Like, should have hired you before the tenth interview.
• 15:42
Speaker 4: I mean, selling so many clothes in the closet that you wanna repeat.
• 15:45
Speaker 3: You know what that's like? I feel like when I was going on lots of dates with different people, I would be like, shoot, I can't remember if I wore this outfit with this guy already.
• 15:55
Speaker 2: Am I on date '2 or three? Exactly.
• 15:58
Speaker 3: Yes. Like, was it right. Was date three with this person? Did I wear it with that? So then I'm like, do you have to take pictures of yourself and, like, right where you were going?
• 16:06
But on a date, they don't like they're realistically not gonna be
• 16:09
  Speaker 2: like a
• 16:09
  Speaker 5: or that black
• 16:10
  Speaker 3: pop
• 16:10
  Speaker 4: up. Again. Right?
• 16:11
Speaker 3: Like It's a little weird Yeah. To show up in the same outfit.
• 16:13
Speaker 2: In the second. Yeah. Probably.
• 16:15
Speaker 3: Yeah. Especially if it's, like, two dates in a row. Yes. And you're like, didn't you wear that same dress? It is weird.
• 16:22
Speaker 4: It's funny. Most guys wouldn't remember that. Yeah. Were your baby they were looking at your baby blues.
• 16:27
Speaker 3: Yes. Baby. Yeah. Most guys wouldn't remember. But if you're applying for a fashion job, they'd different sure.
• 16:32
  Speaker 2: So
• 16:32
  Speaker 4: for your sake.
• 16:33
Speaker 3: Yeah. It's so funny because my boyfriend, like, whenever we're talking about certain things, he's like, let me put this in dating terms for you. If I'm, like, not getting he's like, what if on a second date, this person said this to you? I like, oh, that's terrible. And he's like, now you get why this is bad in this situation.
• 16:48
So it's always like in relationship terms. I I feel like that's a great metaphor for me. What do you think is actually worth buying this fall, either shoe wise or otherwise, that you think will be a big trend this season?
• 17:02
Speaker 2: I think I really like to do investment pieces, think that I would love and wear no matter if it is this fall or next fall, and that's what I like. Whenever I'm shopping something, I'm like, How much am I gonna wear of this? Of course, are demotional pieces that you wanna wear right now. It could be like the chocolate brown that we were talking before, but I think a very nice ballerina flat, it's a great transitional piece.
• 17:25
Speaker 3: Yeah, love that. Okay. Let's move on to the drama club.
• 17:29
Speaker 6: From athletic stuff like a full court pickup game,
• 17:32
Speaker 2: swish to athletic ish stuff
• 17:35
Speaker 4: like a half mile stroll.
• 17:36
Speaker 2: Get those steps in. Head to Sierra or sierra.com for the brands you want at the prices that let you do it all. From athletic to athletic, Sierra's got it.
• 17:46

• 18:19
Speaker 3: So on this segment, we discuss a trending either fashion or lifestyle or celebrity thing that's going on in the news. We wanted to talk to you about Anna Wintour tapping Chloe Mel as the new editor of American Vogue.
• 18:33
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 18:34
Speaker 3: She's 39 years old. That's like Mhmm. That's pretty young. I think it's actually the same age as Anna was
• 18:39
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 18:40
Speaker 3: Back in 1988. Do you think that younger generation will be, like, reflected in the choices that she's make going to make?
• 18:49
Speaker 2: I love Chloe. She's so hard working. I've been, I know I had worked with her before, I think she's super talented, super smart, I think she has a big challenge ahead of her. I think she's already editing vogue.com, so we already see she's doing. I think the question is how much of a change that we're gonna see, but I like when I read the New York Times when they were saying, when she was saying that she wants the magazine to be fewer editions and more collectible item that, you know, I text Gloria myself as like, Oh, this is a great idea.
• 19:22
I would love to. I would love to collect those amazing fashion magazines. And I wonder how the transformation it's gonna be, you know? I wonder if we're gonna see anything that it's different from we're already yes,
• 19:34
Speaker 4: style wise. I think what's gonna happen is they have to do it because they don't get the advertisers that they did ten years ago because of people are buying online. But I remember when I was in my 30s and I had a young family, I used to love to look at the magazines, which I don't look at anymore, but I used to hold and I think I had copies for ten, fifteen years of Architectural Digest where you used to look at it and keep them as references and I'm hoping that's maybe what she's gonna do in fashion. She's gonna have beautiful editions, a beautiful paper that makes people want to save it and we're all wishing her Exactly. You have
• 20:16
Speaker 2: access to designers and stories that know
• 20:19
Speaker 4: And it's not the same old same I don't want to see Kim Kardashian every single Like a longer piece.
• 20:26
  Speaker 3: I would love
• 20:26
Speaker 2: to see more fashion stories. I would too. Sure.
• 20:31
Speaker 3: Does that mean that it would be more expensive to buy an issue, I guess? Probably.
• 20:37
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think so, if they raise the quality. But figured if that you're only gonna do it four times a year versus every month, it probably ends up to be the same for the consumer.
• 20:49
Speaker 3: Yeah. The traditional title of editor in chief also has been retired in this structural shift at Conde Nast. What do you think that says about how media companies are evolving? I think it's now head of editorial content is the title.
• 21:05
Speaker 2: I mean, content right now, it's much bigger than an editor in chief used to do, 70 pages in a magazine, 200 pages in a magazine. How many stories do you publish in a day, right? And then there's TikTok and then there's Instagram. So content, it is the world, it is how it's displayed right now. But I guess for, you know, was an editor before and I think it would be nice to have the editor in chief job, like title.
• 21:29
I like head of content, for the title I wish that the girls could cap the old school.
• 21:36
Speaker 3: Maybe Anna's like, No one else will have that name again after me.
• 21:39
Speaker 2: It's CEO, do you understand? It's like one of those names that it's like, Just give the title.
• 21:43
Speaker 3: Exactly, yeah. Grandma, I feel like you've watched her career evolve, I guess.
• 21:48
Speaker 4: Yeah, I did, I did, sweetheart. And you know what was so interesting, before this all happened, you and I were watching the Met Gala together, so that's a couple of months ago. May. It's almost a how long? May.
• 21:59
May. Yeah, a couple months. And I saw the end of her career that night. I said
• 22:05
  Speaker 2: it to you
• 22:05
Speaker 4: that night and I sort of said Well, it on you
• 22:08
Speaker 3: watched the entire livestream which was like four hours and we were sitting down and watching this.
• 22:14
Speaker 4: No, it was over. You could almost see that that was the passing of a moment and I think she was smart to say goodbye now when she was at what, maybe not her high, but she was still pretty high in the echelon of fashion.
• 22:31
Speaker 3: She's She's also young involved, she's not single.
• 22:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, but young people are not interested in what was going on that night and except for Diana Ross who stole the show, it was a big bore. So I think fashion has to keep up with the times, has to keep up with young people and what they're thinking and what older people really want and I think somewhere along the line that got messed up. So this is a new phase for Vogue. I think this young woman has certainly loads of experience.
• 23:00
Speaker 3: Yes, pressure's on, though.
• 23:02
Speaker 4: The pressure's on. And we all wish her luck, but it's time for a change. Yeah. It was time for a change.
• 23:09
Speaker 3: Okay. Let's move on to the Grandma Report. So there's an article that came out the other week from the cut. It's about spent too much money this summer. Here's what to do.
• 23:23
Cause after summer vacations, people are feeling financially drained. Mhmm. And experts are recommending planning the next three months ahead. So like gifts you're gonna spend on people, how to avoid those last minute splurges and like those emotional shopping moments. So I was curious how you can like plan for a trendy fashionable fall without doing those spontaneous purchases or maybe you are gonna allow yourself to do those spontaneous purchases, but it's like that one timeless piece as you were saying earlier.
• 23:58
Speaker 2: I think there was a time when people were buying coats in July. Yeah. And I think the customers right now, they are much more conscious and they are shopping things that they can buy now and wear now. I see for Lover Day we're selling a lot of ballet flats and sneakers much more than we're selling boots and we are in September, which two years ago we would be selling boots. I think the customers now, they want that immediate.
• 24:21
They are not even, not to say that we're not selling boots, but then the majority of the things, the top sellers are like sneakers and ballet flats, and of course those are trendy items, but I think that then the boot season, when it starts getting really cold, October, November, that's when they're gonna So the customers right now, they're shopping carefully. Carefully. Carefully. Not shopping an entire wardrobe three months the season actually starts. Because God knows the weather too, right?
• 24:49
It changes. There's a season that is very cold, there's a season that is very warm. So people are more
• 24:55
Speaker 4: conscious of what they're Well, they're pocketbook. And I know I've been reading loads of articles that go along with this thing. Young people in their 20s and early 30s are spending an enormous amount on weddings, on gifts, and that has to be cut back. Somehow along the way that's gotten out of hand and I think that's what they're feeling now, there's a crunch and everything is costing more. So I think people are going to buy basics.
• 25:22
They're gonna buy basics that they need to wear for that moment. They're not gonna think about, well maybe I have a wedding in December and I need to
• 25:29
Speaker 2: buy shoes. No, and it's like a four day wedding, right? Exactly. And it's like five day Exactly. Then at my time, it
• 25:36
Speaker 4: was like, okay, you're gonna buy one boot. One outfit. And
• 25:39
Speaker 2: then you would wear all the boots with everything. Exactly. Right?
• 25:42
Speaker 4: The difference is the people taking all the pictures. So everybody sees, this is what Kimmy and I have discussed this a million times. Oh I can't wear that dress again.
• 25:50
Speaker 3: Had a I posted in it last week at a wedding. I can't wear it this week.
• 25:53
Speaker 4: But those people weren't gonna be on this week's wedding. But they thought. Know, I know. This is the problem though. And I think what happens is you need to buy classic.
• 26:02
You need to buy the pair of sneakers you know you're gonna wear week and not worry about the one wedding that you're gonna have down the road. And maybe go back in your closet and pull a vintage out so that you don't spend so much on those kind of one time You
• 26:18
Speaker 2: need like five new coats. Exactly. You don't need a coat this year. You'll have coats from next year.
• 26:24
Speaker 4: Exactly. You're gonna have to mix and match.
• 26:27
Speaker 2: Yeah. Mix and match.
• 26:28
Speaker 3: Yeah. But somehow I still go into the closet and I'm like, shoot. I don't like, actually before these Mhmm. Larroude flats that you You have to show these on him. I didn't have brown flats.
• 26:37
So, like, there were so many outfits that I was like, okay. Like, I don't have a shoe that will work with this. So you can't just have one boot, one shoe. You need it
• 26:46
Speaker 2: in I all the there's always I find that there's always one item that you buy could be you know, for me it was when I got the Aliyah bag, a new modern shape. Right. And I got it last year and I was like, I know that this is modern enough, that every outfit that I'm gonna wear, it's gonna bring an edge
• 27:02
  Speaker 3: to True.
• 27:03
Speaker 2: So what are the ballet flats that you wanna get, that you're gonna feel, that you have a fall fresh into your sweaters that you already have from last year. So that's where I find that you need to be mindful to buy certain things that will make your old looks feel fresh.
• 27:21
Speaker 4: You don't need purple to go into fall or maroon, excuse me, can't get the words out, but you do need basic brown and you do need basic black. So if you're on a budget, go for those two color shoes. You're always gonna wear those. Then if you happen to make a couple extra bucks go for the wine color shoe or the purple shoe or the green shoe or whatever you want. But I do think people are going to be cost conscious because their prices are going up and there's nothing you can do about that.
• 27:53
  You can
• 27:54
  Speaker 2: write off stuff.
• 27:54
Speaker 4: That's the state of affairs right now and you have to be mindful of what you're spending. Yeah. So
• 28:00
Speaker 3: They do say, the experts in this article, to use the two month wait rule, which is like hold off on big purchases since prices usually drop later. But like, do you think that's realistic in fashion when things sell out so fast? Because I get upset when I'm like, oh, I want this. If I wait and I see it sold out, I'm gonna have regret. Listen, what do I do?
• 28:23
  What I would
• 28:24
Speaker 2: say, there is not unlimited inventory out there. Right? So if it is something that you really love, get it? But then you're not and it's also what I tell my daughter, you're not going to be able to get everything.
• 28:36
Speaker 4: Pick and choose. And choose.
• 28:38
Speaker 2: And then I also think that there are other options nowadays, right? You can buy certain things at re sell items or and I do think that Uniqlo does amazing cashmere sweaters that you can get for $40 right? There are other brands that you can lean in again, not to shop 10 cashmere sweaters, that's what I'm saying, but you can buy like one fresh thing and a new great pair of shoe and make your outfit feel fresh again.
• 29:07
Speaker 3: That's great advice. Okay. Let's do the rewind. So grandma and I typically talk about what we're watching Mhmm. On TV.
• 29:20
I wanna talk about this show because I'm so obsessed. Love Thy Nader.
• 29:23
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 29:24
Speaker 3: It's this new reality TV family. Brooke Nader is a model, and it's her and her sisters in New York. And they're all modeling, and they're from Louisiana, and they're, like, showing their lives in New York City. And I couldn't believe it because there was an episode with a Larroude campaign. Yes.
• 29:40
And I was like, this is perfect because we have you coming on, Marina. Love you so much. It's so good. Did you watch the whole season? Yes, yes.
• 29:46
Okay. I have so many questions.
• 29:48
  Speaker 2: Tell me.
• 29:49
Speaker 3: Were you there at that shoot?
• 29:50
Speaker 2: I was. Think I Okay. It was so funny because Brooks has been wearing Labrador, she and her sisters, since we launched.
• 29:57
  Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
• 29:58
Speaker 2: So we are friends. She has been to so many of our parties. She's like a huge supporter since day one. And then we were shooting her this summer and she's like, Wait, I'm taping a TV show, can my crew come? I was like, Yeah, they Yeah.
• 30:11
Must yeah, so we had an amazing day at the Hamptons. I was there, like the crew was there. We couldn't sing anything it was live, but when I saw that we had such a big moment on TV, I'm like, oh, that was nice.
• 30:26
Speaker 3: That was terrific. So Grandma, the controversy was Brooks had this campaign in the Hamptons with Larroude, and her sister, Grace Ann, had her birthday party in New York City the same day. Oh, no. So So that's the conflict. Right.
• 30:39
That was the conflict. And Brooks, last minute, told Grace Ann she wasn't gonna make it to the birthday. My question is, was she talking about it on set? Like, she saying to you, oh, no. I'm not gonna make the birthday or was it, like, not mentioned?
• 30:53
Speaker 2: It was she was like, I have a cut off. I need to go. And I was
• 30:58
  Speaker 3: like, but we
• 30:58
Speaker 2: need to really shoot more things, Brooks. But yeah, no, it was like, I need to leave.
• 31:05
Speaker 3: She did think she was gonna make it. It wasn't like actually a different day. No, wanted to leave.
• 31:11
Speaker 2: There was like a cut off.
• 31:12
Speaker 4: She knew her priorities.
• 31:14
Speaker 2: Family needed to come back. I didn't know it was at that time. I didn't know what it was for, but she was like, I need to leave guys.
• 31:22
  Speaker 3: I guess she
• 31:22
Speaker 4: It's couldn't not a five minute trip back
• 31:25
Speaker 3: to the city. Because she couldn't make the birthday in the end.
• 31:27
Speaker 4: Oh, didn't make it.
• 31:28
Speaker 3: Oh. She finished the show, which, like, obviously, if you have a work commitment, you have to, like, abide by that. Otherwise, she shouldn't have agreed to that day. And also, we've gotten work opportunities that, Grandma, like, you've turned it down because it's on a
• 31:41
  Speaker 4: family
• 31:41
  Speaker 3: birthday.
• 31:41
Speaker 4: I mean, it's what you wanna do first. I mean, it's what your priority are. And, you know, there's some things you it sounds great when you're reading about it and when they push it, you know, for you to do, but if it conflicts with an anniversary or a birthday, I say no, we'll have to do it another time. But then again, if it can be both done in the same day, it's very nice. The ideal is to do both.
• 32:11
Speaker 3: Mhmm. Well, somehow, my so my grandma, my grandpa, and my mom's birthday are three days in a row. That's true.
• 32:18
Speaker 2: That's me and my husband. Really? Really? Same thing. Same thing.
• 32:22
Speaker 3: And somehow, there's always, like, huge work opportunities. Those, like, three that weekend. Right. It's always fashionable So it's like Okay. We always end up saying no.
• 32:31
There was one time I got to go to, like, I think it was, a Love Shock fancy event. But we missed going
• 32:36
Speaker 4: to LA last year because of, I think it was our birthdays. That was the It same was for Whatever, whatever. There's nothing we could do about it. Can't Family's first.
• 32:47
Speaker 3: Well, is it okay to choose work over family, do you think?
• 32:50
  Speaker 4: I don't think ever.
• 32:52
Speaker 2: I mean, I work with my family, so I Your last got it year, we opened our factory in Brazil and my husband and I, we are like a day apart, so we celebrated our birthday opening the factory. Right. Right? Whenever it's my kids and then they're still young, they
• 33:08
Speaker 4: have to do it.
• 33:09
Speaker 2: Like, I missed once Gloria's birthday because I had to go to Paris to buy Chanel shoes for parties at a time, which was fabulous. Yeah. You had to go. But I had to, but I actually had And I was like, sorry, Gloria, I really cannot. But you thought about
• 33:22
Speaker 4: It was a guilt trip was
• 33:24
Speaker 2: very upset. And also, on another way, I was like, Okay, I need to pay rent. Right? It's part of a job. I think once we later in life, because we own our own company or you do your own thing, then you have the privilege to choose and pick.
• 33:41
Right. But there are lot of times when I had a career that I couldn't, right? It's such you're working for somebody else. Gotta do it. Yeah.
• 33:47
Speaker 3: Such a good point. And I feel like Brooks on the show even said that where she was like, How do you think we're living in this SoHo loft, like the three of us? I have to say yes to these jobs to be successful, so it's definitely a hard one.
• 34:01
Speaker 2: It is a compromise, right? And it doesn't matter if it is on it could be a birthday, but it could also be a Sunday and you have to do it, right? And I think that's it takes work. Yeah, for sure.
• 34:14
Speaker 3: Okay, we're gonna do our Ask grandma anything. So we have questions from our audience Okay. For grandma, and you and I, Marina, will help answer them. So the first one is he wants to be intentional and go slow, but it feels so slow, I almost feel rejected in the relationship. What should I do?
• 34:38
Speaker 4: Leave. Wow. How old are they? This so depends on the age of the people. I hate to generalize because when you're in your early 20s and if they're going slow, that's fine because you have so many other commitments and it's But it's
• 34:53
Speaker 3: so slow you feel rejected? I agree, leave. Like you should never feel rejected. It's
• 34:58
Speaker 2: interest. Nothing is low. It's like he's not interested in you, then leave.
• 35:03
Speaker 4: Well, you're not a priority. Might be interested, but you're not a priority. And that's my only advice to somebody who's been in something for a while. If they are going so slow, there's a reason that they're probably really not sure that this is the right relationship.
• 35:18
Speaker 3: Well, like, what is slow in your eyes, do
• 35:21
Speaker 4: you think? Well, you know, my my eyes. Yes.
• 35:23
  Speaker 2: Hear it.
• 35:23
Speaker 4: But but I I don't believe in long, prolonged, relationships other than getting married. I don't believe that you should live with somebody for years or six months or eight months because you're not gonna know him any or her any differently until you really, really commit. And commitment is much different than living together. People live together for years and they get married and they get divorced, so I think it's more about making the decision, This is who I wanted to plan my life with and let's get on with it. I don't mean I after a first date.
• 35:54
And there are some people who say they fell in love after the first date and good luck to them.
• 35:58
  Speaker 2: I did.
• 35:59
Speaker 4: Yeah, and my husband says he did, I didn't. So yeah, it's wonderful.
• 36:04
Speaker 3: I didn't even ask how you first met your husband. Oh yeah.
• 36:07
Speaker 2: So we met in Brazil at a bar and it was between a huge group of people and we started dating. And how old were you? I was 23.
• 36:16
Speaker 4: So you were young.
• 36:16
Speaker 2: Right. He proposed to me six months later. Right. We got married six months after. Wow.
• 36:23
So we got married within a
• 36:24
  Speaker 4: year. That's what I did.
• 36:25
  Speaker 2: I was 24, he was 25.
• 36:27
  Speaker 3: Right. Wild.
• 36:28
Speaker 4: No, but I think that to me is correct.
• 36:32
  Speaker 3: That's what
• 36:32
Speaker 4: you did. That's what I did. Well, I think it's because you're not gonna know anybody any better. So, it's either gonna work or it's not gonna work.
• 36:39
Speaker 2: But I also think that nowadays everyone's like, Oh, I wanna have a successful career. I wanna do this, I wanna do that, I wanna do that. And for us, we're like, We know this. We are gonna build our lives together. But then that also meant that I was an intern and a I newlywed.
• 36:57
Yeah. So it was a choice too. But we decided to do it together.
• 37:02
Speaker 3: Yeah. It's so interesting because I feel like for that to have worked, you two had to be aligned in your timing. Like if one of you was ready to get engaged after six months and the other one was like, this feels fast for me. That would have been an issue. Like in this case
• 37:16
Speaker 4: Well, sounds like what's happening with this.
• 37:18
Speaker 3: If one person feels like I wanna move faster and the other is like, I'm moving slow, it might not be that he's not interested in or that he's at fault rather than like You're not alone. Are not aligned. Yeah.
• 37:30
Speaker 4: But that's something to take into consideration because you might never be aligned.
• 37:34
Speaker 2: If you're Or not I just willing to might take take the patching up.
• 37:37
Speaker 3: I think you have to give it a window. I don't think if after a week you're like, Oh, I feel like I'm fast No, but I for think it's
• 37:45
Speaker 2: different things, right? It's like, Listen, I cannot I'm dedicating a lot of my time to I work right have to work at certain hours, so I really like you. So I think it's, A, the question is bigger than that, and then might be that she wanna get married right away and the guy's like, I'm building up my career. Can't know, for the first two do or three years in our marriage, Ricardo was working till 2AM. So we're like, okay, we are married and we wanna be together but for a very long time he was almost unavailable, you know?
• 38:15
Speaker 4: But you were much younger. Yes, like I was. So that's the difference. I think now so many of the young people wait till they're in their late 20s, 30s and by that time Buy their free apartment and then get married. Right.
• 38:29
  They better wake up.
• 38:30
Speaker 3: I think that's a great point though that you should If he's just saying, I wanna be intentional, like what does that mean? Is it like because of the work? Is it be like, I feel like what you should do is ask a question of, like, does that mean? And is it because you're figuring out what x y z? Because that's probably what's causing confusion.
• 38:52
Okay. Next question. How about a fling with your husband? How can you create that within your own marriage? So I guess, like, keeping the romance
• 39:02
Speaker 4: alive. Think every day should be an adventure. It isn't twenty four seven adventure, but something to look forward to, even if it's date night. People take one day out of a week and say, Listen, we'll have a bottle of wine and we'll sit in Even if it's takeout pizza, but be together, be with each other.
• 39:21
Speaker 2: We're adamant about that too. We're like, okay, Fridays and Saturdays, even if it is very busy, we're like, no, we have to do one night a week. Exactly.
• 39:31
Speaker 4: Take a walk together, go see an exhibition someplace just the two of you and there's so many ways of doing it. I think that somebody who doesn't do that ends up with no relationship. They can't sustain it over a long period of time.
• 39:47
Speaker 3: Okay. Let's finish out the episode with GrandmaGal's old fashioned dating quiz. So if this is like rapid fire, we're gonna figure out whether you're more traditional
• 39:58
  Speaker 4: I like where she's going.
• 39:59
  Speaker 3: Or more modern
• 40:01
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 40:01
Speaker 3: Dating thinking. Okay. Would you rather receive a call or a text from your husband if it's just to say hi?
• 40:09
Speaker 2: A text in the middle of the day.
• 40:11
Speaker 3: Yeah. Would you sleep with someone on the first date?
• 40:15
  Speaker 2: No. But I mean, I am I wish I was young today. I don't know.
• 40:20
Speaker 4: I don't suppose to do any either.
• 40:23
Speaker 3: Dating apps or setups?
• 40:27
Speaker 2: Again, I never was part of the dating app. So I sometimes I'm like sometimes I ask my friends, I'm like, can I take a look? Can I see how
• 40:33
Speaker 3: it is? That's fun.
• 40:34
  Speaker 2: I think setups.
• 40:35
Speaker 3: Yeah. Although you met your husband in the wild, so that's gonna be a third option, know? It's natural. Everyone's Isn't gonna say that as their
• 40:43
Speaker 2: it nicer if you meet someone at school, if you meet someone with friends, just in an unnatural environment, just the serendipity that helps.
• 40:49
Speaker 4: But as you get older, gets harder to do
• 40:51
Speaker 2: that. Gets harder, yes.
• 40:52
Speaker 4: Gets harder. When you're in a school situation and young, you seem to have it because you're all in a small community. Once you're working in the workforce, it's not so easy to
• 41:00
  Speaker 2: do Move
• 41:01
Speaker 3: in together before getting engaged or after you're married?
• 41:07
Speaker 2: For us, it happened before because we both moved to New York at the time, but it was about two weeks and then he proposed, so Pretty much. Much it was coming. Yeah. Yeah. Right.
• 41:19
Speaker 3: When you when you get engaged, should you look at rings together or have it be like a surprise? You know what? He proposed to me with my wedding band.
• 41:29
Speaker 2: Pretty. Because we were broke at the time. I tell my kid that. We were like 24 year old. Like how he has.
• 41:35
Then later on he bought his grandmother stone and we set it we set it like seven years later. Again, for me it was about like being together at the
• 41:46
  Speaker 4: time Yeah. And
• 41:48
Speaker 2: Very nice. But I mean if you can, pick your ring, I guess.
• 41:51
Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Who should pay for the date? Should it be one person in the relationship, or should you split, alternate?
• 41:59
Speaker 2: That I'm old school. Yeah. Maybe in beginning of it, like, the guy should pay and then you guys can start splitting the Just as a show that there is some, like, romance into it. Yeah. But you know what?
• 42:15
Until today, Ricardo and I, when we go out for dinner and we, of course, we have the same bank account. Right. And we have been married for twenty one years. I'd never seen a bill from a restaurant. Right.
• 42:29
  Speaker 4: He's always
• 42:30
Speaker 2: That's He's always like, don't wanna I'm go to married. I'm married. It's a romance in our relationship.
• 42:35
Speaker 4: I have never seen a Yeah.
• 42:37
Speaker 3: What do you mean seen a bill? Like you never looked over or like you've never had No,
• 42:41
Speaker 4: I've never paid when Poppy and I
• 42:44
Speaker 2: were going restaurant. For the restaurants, Ricardo, it's like, no, I just wanna make this as a date night. You don't need to think how much that was. And again, guys, we work together. Right.
• 42:53
I like, we bring the same money into the bank account like that whole thing, but it's just that little romance that he's like, I don't want you to see it.
• 43:00
Speaker 4: Still the male thinking that he's taking care of you. It's still that in their minds, that's very much a male
• 43:07
Speaker 3: I don't even know if it's in their minds or I feel like in both the people's minds because like for me too, like, I feel like if we're on a date night, if we're sitting at a restaurant at dinner, my boyfriend's paying, but like that doesn't mean that earlier in the day, if I'm picking up lunch, like I would pick up the lunch and it could be the exact same
• 43:25
Speaker 2: Oh, yes. But then listen, I'm also very independent and I always like to buy my own things and, you know, as a friend of mine, as a former boss of mine, she's like I always wanted to buy my own pinwholes. For me, I always wanted to have my money to But, buy my you know, when we're going out for a dinner date, he would take care of it and pretend that we're on a romantic level. That's it,
• 43:46
Speaker 3: Okay, for I think you're a little more traditional. Oh, she would be. Thank you so much for joining
• 43:55
Speaker 2: us, guys. Love it.
• 43:57
Speaker 4: And we love your shoes.
• 43:58
Speaker 3: Thank you. We definitely
• 43:59
  Speaker 2: love you.
• 43:59
Speaker 4: Kimberly wears this particular pair
• 44:02
Speaker 3: know. Of all the These are the new ones coming up. Yes. Are like hand woven. So beautiful.
• 44:06
I'll post pictures online for those who are just listening. But I'm a huge fan. Thank you. My mom is. Grandma is now.
• 44:14
  So thank you so much.
• 44:15
Speaker 4: Thank you. You for being so patient and waiting for the studio. I
• 44:20
Speaker 2: had the best time. It was the best way to start my morning chatting with you guys.
• 44:25
Speaker 3: Yeah. Know. Feel like we know each other so well now.
• 44:27
  Speaker 4: We're best friends. We're besties.
• 44:29
Speaker 2: Now I'm gonna get a call from my cousin who is such a fan of you guys and my daughter. It's gonna be like, you know them. Yeah. Well, now you're like, these are my new best I'm gonna be like, yes, girls. Tell everyone
• 44:41
Speaker 3: how they can find you, shop your shoes.
• 44:43
Speaker 2: So go to laurde.com to shop all of our shoes. Amazing. Oh sorry, laurde.
• 44:49
Speaker 3: And we will see you guys next week. Yeah. Bye. Bye.
