- 2:17Speaker 1: On Sunday, August twenty third, at ten eastern ninth Central
- 2:22Speaker 1: on the History Channel. Let's go racing boys. All right, dude,
- 2:27Speaker 1: we're rolling.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Racing with
- 2:29Speaker 2: the Boys. Our guest today is a man from Humblebegimmings
- 2:32Speaker 2: from the Northeast. Came in started working for the wonderful
- 2:35Speaker 2: NASCAR entity in nineteen ninety six, worked his way up
- 2:38Speaker 2: so they never expected to be a CEO, but we
- 2:40Speaker 2: have Steve o'donn on the pod.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Give a rap.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Pause, Ladies and gentlemen, thank you first, sorry, great to
- 2:46Speaker 2: be on the bus. Yeah, dude, great to have you.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Thank dude.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Howling the hell do you go from passing out hats
- 2:52Speaker 1: setting up Victory Lane to now you're running you're the
- 2:54Speaker 1: first CEO of NASCAR.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a great question. A lot of luck, right,
- 2:59Speaker 3: some good people around on me, but you know, worked
- 3:01Speaker 3: hard and tried to be around good people, hire some
- 3:04Speaker 3: good people. But it's been a really good run.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Man.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I've got to do all kinds of things. And you
- 3:08Speaker 3: guys have been around NASCAR and it's a lot of
- 3:10Speaker 3: cool people, right, and so you get to know a
- 3:13Speaker 3: lot of folks work with them. At the end of
- 3:16Speaker 3: the day. You know, you've got to tell the truth.
- 3:18Speaker 3: You gotta you gotta kind of be a stand up guy,
- 3:20Speaker 3: which which I think I am, and it's it's worked
- 3:22Speaker 3: for me.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Yeah. You well brought up the like get passing out hats. Yeah,
- 3:26Speaker 2: started like very like bottom of the barrel stuff when
- 3:29Speaker 2: it comes to NASCAR.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, how like, at.
- 3:31Speaker 2: What point from nineteen ninety six till now, were you like,
- 3:35Speaker 2: I actually have a shot to become the CEO.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Now that's a great question. So when I started out,
- 3:39Speaker 3: I showed up at the office. I'd come from the
- 3:41Speaker 3: citruspol over in Orlando, went to the NASCAR maybe forty
- 3:45Speaker 3: five people or so, and and I was like, oh, cool,
- 3:47Speaker 3: you know, where's my office? And my boss was like, no,
- 3:49Speaker 3: we're down We're down at the warehouse by the river.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I was like, what, So we go down there. It's
- 3:54Speaker 3: me and him, big warehouse full of gatorade, coolers and hats.
- 3:58Speaker 3: And our job was we two jobs. It's basically all
- 4:01Speaker 3: the all the cars had the decals on the front
- 4:03Speaker 3: quarter panels, so we would sell those to sponsors payment
- 4:07Speaker 3: We'll go out to the race teams. And then we
- 4:09Speaker 3: went to the race. You know, we're doing the hat dance,
- 4:11Speaker 3: we're handing out Gatorade coolers. So you know, I learned
- 4:13Speaker 3: pretty quick. Like when you're in victory lane and doing
- 4:15Speaker 3: pre race, you're with the guy who's you know, driving
- 4:18Speaker 3: the truck, the team sponsor, to the CEO of whatever sponsor,
- 4:21Speaker 3: and you know, you get to know some of those folks.
- 4:25Speaker 3: If you're any good or good personality, I think people
- 4:27Speaker 3: are like, all right, this guy may this guy may
- 4:29Speaker 3: make it. If not, you're pretty quickly out at NASCAR.
- 4:32Speaker 3: So I had a lot of good mentors during the time,
- 4:35Speaker 3: and I think taking that job and working hard prior
- 4:39Speaker 3: you know, interning, just just working hard, trying to you know,
- 4:43Speaker 3: just get the job done right. It allowed me to
- 4:45Speaker 3: move over eventually into the competition space, which gave me
- 4:48Speaker 3: a really good feel for right marketing, sales competition, and uh,
- 4:53Speaker 3: you know, from there, I had some luck right along
- 4:55Speaker 3: the way. You know, somebody may have left or something
- 4:57Speaker 3: happened and was able to move my way up. It's
- 5:00Speaker 3: been great.
- 5:01Speaker 1: There's there is I mean, you said, like there is
- 5:03Speaker 1: luck involved in everything of the ladder, becoming to yourself successful,
- 5:07Speaker 1: whatever it is. But like, was it a goal of
- 5:09Speaker 1: yours when you're coming in and starting off, like, was
- 5:12Speaker 1: it a goal? Like you all want to get as
- 5:13Speaker 1: high as I can't, Like it'd be sick to be
- 5:14Speaker 1: a No.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Clearly there wasn't.
- 5:16Speaker 1: There wasn't close to a in nineteen ninety six. Yeah,
- 5:19Speaker 1: but what was the goal when you're coming into it?
- 5:21Speaker 3: Yeah? For me, I mean, I know this sounds crazy,
- 5:23Speaker 3: but it was just I wanted to be in sports, right,
- 5:25Speaker 3: So I had tried when I came out of college,
- 5:27Speaker 3: played baseball for a little bit, and were you bees No,
- 5:31Speaker 3: I wasn't. That's that's why I got cut quickly. I
- 5:33Speaker 3: wanted to Uh, I was trying to get a job
- 5:35Speaker 3: of minor league baseball, and that's how old I am,
- 5:38Speaker 3: you know, sent letters to all the teams, one hundred
- 5:40Speaker 3: and fifty rejection letters of you know. So I was
- 5:42Speaker 3: just like, I just want.
- 5:43Speaker 1: To run back.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, it's a point, that good point. So I
- 5:47Speaker 3: just wanted to get in. And then with NASCAR, it was,
- 5:49Speaker 3: you know, the sport was really growing, so it was
- 5:52Speaker 3: an opportunity to get in and see what could happen.
- 5:54Speaker 3: But I just wanted to be part of a sport
- 5:56Speaker 3: and be around good people and see where it could go.
- 5:58Speaker 3: I never sat around and said, you know, I want
- 6:01Speaker 3: to run this thing. Still kind of pinched for myself sometimes,
- 6:04Speaker 3: you know, but it's uh, I think it's just about
- 6:07Speaker 3: NASCAR has been a place where we've had so many
- 6:09Speaker 3: good people, and for me, if I wasn't doing this,
- 6:13Speaker 3: I'd be teaching and coaching, and so to me, that's
- 6:16Speaker 3: what it's all about right now is we've got good people.
- 6:18Speaker 3: I want to see the next generation kind of come
- 6:20Speaker 3: up and see what they can do. And it's good
- 6:22Speaker 3: opportunity we've had.
- 6:24Speaker 2: We've had a lot of like very successful people on
- 6:26Speaker 2: this podcast, and a lot of them actually mentioned if
- 6:28Speaker 2: I wasn't doing this, I'd be teaching or coaching and
- 6:30Speaker 2: giving back to their communities as all the ways. So that's
- 6:32Speaker 2: I thought, it's like a good natural trait for somebody
- 6:34Speaker 2: to have if they actually want the best vision for
- 6:36Speaker 2: whatever industry.
- 6:36Speaker 3: To really agree, you.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Mentioned luck a few times, had to get lucky, how
- 6:39Speaker 2: to get like you said on two separate answers, do
- 6:42Speaker 2: you remember any specific moment where luck took place for
- 6:45Speaker 2: you to be like, Okay, this is the move, the
- 6:48Speaker 2: chess move I have to make now to become a
- 6:50Speaker 2: CEO or take the next step of my career.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, some of it's just maybe
- 6:54Speaker 3: somebody somebody left. Kay. Like So I remember being at
- 6:57Speaker 3: NASCAR is probably ten years in and I was kind
- 6:59Speaker 3: of saying, and you know, what else is there for me?
- 7:02Speaker 3: You know, I've kind of I've kind of hit the ceiling.
- 7:04Speaker 3: And I had a new boss who I wasn't it
- 7:07Speaker 3: came came from the outside and wasn't really sure this
- 7:09Speaker 3: was this was the place for me. Talked to my
- 7:11Speaker 3: wife and was thinking about, all right, you know, I'm
- 7:13Speaker 3: not sure what I'll do. But and and I came in. Yeah,
- 7:17Speaker 3: and I came in the next day. Yeah, perhaps yeah,
- 7:21Speaker 3: but I came in, but it was it was short term.
- 7:28Speaker 3: This person from the outside who came in and I
- 7:31Speaker 3: came to work the next day, and uh, another guy
- 7:33Speaker 3: came in and you hear about so and so.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Now I quit.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I was like, for real, quit and this was the
- 7:38Speaker 3: guy who's my boss. I was like, fantastic. So I
- 7:41Speaker 3: ended up getting that. It's like my birthday. So I mean,
- 7:47Speaker 3: one of those It just worked out. And then you know,
- 7:49Speaker 3: I had some good people who you know, maybe took
- 7:51Speaker 3: a shot on me of like, hey, let this guy
- 7:53Speaker 3: is pretty young, let him try out this job. So,
- 7:56Speaker 3: you know, just good people along the way who believed
- 7:59Speaker 3: in me that didn't have to. You know, I think
- 8:01Speaker 3: that that worked out really well for me.
- 8:03Speaker 1: The people who are taking a shot, are you managing
- 8:05Speaker 1: people at this point? Are you? They level on you up. Hey,
- 8:08Speaker 1: Let's let him oversee a team. Let's see what he's got,
- 8:10Speaker 1: what kind of skill set, Let's see if it goes
- 8:11Speaker 1: beyond his Obviously, do your job work ethics showing up
- 8:14Speaker 1: the same guy every day.
- 8:15Speaker 3: One hundred percent. I think you know right now, my
- 8:17Speaker 3: job is, you know, put the next generation in place, right,
- 8:20Speaker 3: And what I struggle with a little bit. You know,
- 8:23Speaker 3: I'm on the older end right now, right and you
- 8:25Speaker 3: look at someone who is my age you started, and
- 8:27Speaker 3: I'm like, man, that person's awfully young. And then I
- 8:29Speaker 3: kind of take a pause and go, wait a minute,
- 8:31Speaker 3: someone gave me a shot at that age. Let people go.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Let people do it. You know, things are changing, content,
- 8:37Speaker 3: different things. And what I find is all the young
- 8:39Speaker 3: people got them. They've got the cool ideas, right, So
- 8:41Speaker 3: we got to go and take some risks and let
- 8:44Speaker 3: people make mistakes. You know. I mean we were for
- 8:46Speaker 3: a long time. We were too afraid to make some mistakes.
- 8:49Speaker 3: And I think now the culture is getting to where
- 8:51Speaker 3: hey have some fun for sure, but work hard and
- 8:54Speaker 3: let's see where the sport can go.
- 8:56Speaker 2: He had the sport definitely. Hear a lot of conversations
- 8:59Speaker 2: like we've had drivers on in here and they're like,
- 9:01Speaker 2: back then, back in this day, you guys used to
- 9:03Speaker 2: get into it was a little more of this or that.
- 9:05Speaker 2: And you read about once you became CEO, kind of
- 9:08Speaker 2: every move that's been made in this modern era with you,
- 9:10Speaker 2: like your fingerprints are on it one way or another.
- 9:12Speaker 2: And you're like, NASCAR is making the decision for what
- 9:15Speaker 2: happens to NASCAR. What are like some the early decisions
- 9:18Speaker 2: you made that you're like, oh, that's a big win.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I'm glad we did this, And where are some other
- 9:22Speaker 2: ones that are like, well we kind of fucked that up.
- 9:23Speaker 3: At ye, that's fair again. Yeah, no, I think I'll
- 9:26Speaker 3: go back to how we're going to do the championship
- 9:29Speaker 3: this year. So, you know, I study other sports, right,
- 9:32Speaker 3: you got to see what's going on out there. You
- 9:34Speaker 3: guys played football, and you know, I'm a Giants fan.
- 9:37Speaker 3: So if the Giant was.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Optimistic, you know youre Caucasians. Pass we just did a
- 9:45Speaker 2: backup on a ankle. That's that's called torque.
- 9:50Speaker 3: You got a good coach. So but when the Giants
- 9:54Speaker 3: won the Super Bowl, right, it was a wild card.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Everyone's Giants are super Bowl champions. In our sport, you know,
- 9:59Speaker 3: we had a one race champampionship, and I think the
- 10:02Speaker 3: thinking was, hey, new fans will come in and watch this,
- 10:05Speaker 3: it'll be legit. And what happened was anything can happen
- 10:08Speaker 3: in one race, and a lot of the drivers were
- 10:10Speaker 3: starting to question, like, I've had a great year all
- 10:13Speaker 3: year long, and it's I'm rolling the dice for one
- 10:15Speaker 3: race and it's not just me versus youres, you know,
- 10:17Speaker 3: thirty four other guys, thirty five other guys out on
- 10:19Speaker 3: the track, and it just started to get really tainted,
- 10:22Speaker 3: and we weren't bringing in as many new fans to
- 10:24Speaker 3: watch that last race, and our kind of core fans
- 10:27Speaker 3: were like, this is not NASCAR. And what got me
- 10:30Speaker 3: the most was drivers coming up through the system looking
- 10:33Speaker 3: at NASCAR, looking at these guys who are going to
- 10:35Speaker 3: come in next with priest Or Busher and saying you know,
- 10:38Speaker 3: those young guys, if they want to be a NASCAR
- 10:40Speaker 3: champion and they've rolled off twenty wins during the year
- 10:43Speaker 3: and it comes to one race and they don't win
- 10:45Speaker 3: that race, they're not the champion. You know, you do
- 10:47Speaker 3: that a few times people drivers are going to start
- 10:49Speaker 3: looking at NASCAR is this a legit sport? Like? Is
- 10:51Speaker 3: this truly a champion? So this year we got the
- 10:54Speaker 3: whole industry together, went back kind of old school to
- 10:57Speaker 3: you know, every race counts. We got the chase for
- 10:59Speaker 3: ten race is So I'm proud of that. I'm proud
- 11:02Speaker 3: of the teams and drivers speaking up and saying, hey,
- 11:04Speaker 3: this is where we got to go. And then when
- 11:06Speaker 3: we all get together and rally around a decision, weren't
- 11:09Speaker 3: a good place. It's when we don't communicate and everybody's
- 11:12Speaker 3: pointing fingers, that's when we're in a lot of trouble.
- 11:14Speaker 3: So I'm excited about this year. I think it's I
- 11:15Speaker 3: think it's off to a good start for you.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Kind of being like the first CEO love being transparent.
- 11:21Speaker 1: It seems like fans can kind of like almost tangibly
- 11:25Speaker 1: consume everything that you're saying, kind of be in the
- 11:27Speaker 1: room with you when you were talking earlier about mistakes
- 11:31Speaker 1: that took place back in the day, Like you were
- 11:33Speaker 1: there in the nineties when you get your first job,
- 11:34Speaker 1: you're part of like the era, yep, the good years.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Looking back now that you are the CEO, like, what
- 11:40Speaker 1: were some of those mistakes if you could talk transparently
- 11:43Speaker 1: to the fans, Yeah, that you feel like happened that
- 11:45Speaker 1: their voices were trying to be loud but maybe not
- 11:47Speaker 1: necessarily heard.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we got a little bit away from
- 11:50Speaker 3: who we are right So when I was growing up
- 11:53Speaker 3: and ask you, guys like Mike Helton, Jim Hunter, kind
- 11:56Speaker 3: of old school guys who when you went to the racetrack,
- 11:58Speaker 3: you know, we've got our Hauller, all our officials are
- 12:01Speaker 3: and they just sit out there and guys would come
- 12:03Speaker 3: by and just shoot the shit, you know, what's going
- 12:06Speaker 3: on and in contact with everyone, and you kind of
- 12:08Speaker 3: had a good pulse of what was happening. And our
- 12:10Speaker 3: drivers were real people like fans some and they could
- 12:14Speaker 3: interact and they'd go have a beer with them. And
- 12:16Speaker 3: as the sport exploded, we went to some new places,
- 12:19Speaker 3: which which were great, but we kind of left some
- 12:22Speaker 3: of the fans and we didn't really message it the
- 12:24Speaker 3: right way. We kind of kind of deserted them a
- 12:26Speaker 3: little bit. And I think what you're seeing now is
- 12:28Speaker 3: drivers embracing their home tracks, embracing where we came from,
- 12:31Speaker 3: understanding what's going to grow the sport. We had an
- 12:35Speaker 3: awesome group of drivers right now that want to be
- 12:37Speaker 3: out there with the drivers and then NASCAR folks, you know,
- 12:40Speaker 3: we're spending a lot more time with the teams, the drivers.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Just old school relationships. That's what's going to drive the sport.
- 12:45Speaker 3: And I know it sounds simple, but you know, when
- 12:48Speaker 3: we weren't talking for five or six years, we were
- 12:50Speaker 3: kind of you know, we had a lawsuit last year
- 12:52Speaker 3: and so everybody you went to the garage and everybody
- 12:55Speaker 3: went their own way. And now that's changed. Man, we
- 12:58Speaker 3: see everybody and you know, we're not always going to agree, right,
- 13:00Speaker 3: but people are coming in talking, fans are there. You
- 13:03Speaker 3: can feel a little bit more momentum. We still got
- 13:05Speaker 3: a long way to go, but the foundation is there
- 13:08Speaker 3: and I think we're just gonna We're just gonna build
- 13:10Speaker 3: on that.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Yeah, we've we've talked about this in the show before.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Where the best way to get new fans to just
- 13:14Speaker 2: get into the race. Because Will and I we've been
- 13:16Speaker 2: to a few races, but literally going this time, the
- 13:19Speaker 2: amount of access that NASCAR gave us and the common
- 13:22Speaker 2: fan is able to walk around Pitt Road. Drivers are
- 13:25Speaker 2: walking back and forth and be a part of it.
- 13:27Speaker 2: It's like it's awesome, Like it really humanizes these other drivers.
- 13:31Speaker 2: He talked about like when NASCAR was booming as a
- 13:35Speaker 2: casual now casual NASCAR fan, can you give me like
- 13:39Speaker 2: an era was it? Like the night late nineties was
- 13:42Speaker 2: early two thousands, that like NASCAR was truly like it's
- 13:45Speaker 2: peaking in the moment.
- 13:46Speaker 3: I think late nineties through early two thousands, right, you had.
- 13:50Speaker 2: So late nineties, early two thousands. What was going on
- 13:53Speaker 2: then that still needs to happen now.
- 13:55Speaker 3: To get back to that great, great question, I think
- 13:58Speaker 3: drivers were superstars and the drivers were sponsors activation. You
- 14:02Speaker 3: saw them in commercials, you saw local market activation. And
- 14:05Speaker 3: we're seeing all that come back. So for a while
- 14:08Speaker 3: over the last I'd say, you know five to ten years,
- 14:10Speaker 3: sponsorship got tough. All the money went into the race cars,
- 14:13Speaker 3: which we get right, you got to go fast, you
- 14:15Speaker 3: got to win, and I think that the money was
- 14:18Speaker 3: there for the drivers a little bit more so than
- 14:20Speaker 3: it is today, and that's coming back. But the reason
- 14:22Speaker 3: it's coming back is, you know, drivers are out there hustling.
- 14:25Speaker 3: You know, they're they're making their move on the track,
- 14:27Speaker 3: but they're doing things. They're going out, they're going out
- 14:29Speaker 3: on podcasts, they're going out with sponsors. Sponsors are coming back.
- 14:32Speaker 3: They want to they want to feature drivers in their
- 14:34Speaker 3: ad campaigns, which is great, and so getting more of
- 14:37Speaker 3: that back is really good. And then and then just
- 14:40Speaker 3: having them out there is telling their stories. People want
- 14:42Speaker 3: to know who these guys are, and I think we're
- 14:44Speaker 3: doing a better job of telling the stories about you
- 14:47Speaker 3: know what's unique about each and every one of them?
- 14:50Speaker 1: Rivalries?
- 14:53Speaker 2: Storyline plays, yeah, ten times rivalries.
- 14:58Speaker 3: I mean you had Gordon Earnhardt, you had all those
- 14:59Speaker 3: going going on. And you look at hosts of AR.
- 15:02Speaker 3: I've watched your podcast. I know everybody asked about host
- 15:04Speaker 3: of Big Horse.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I was talking with when we were sitting with Gordon yesterday,
- 15:09Speaker 1: I'm sitting there, we were bringing up post of AR
- 15:11Speaker 1: and stuff like that. But after the pot I'm like,
- 15:12Speaker 1: it's just it's crazy the host of our stuff, because
- 15:15Speaker 1: legitimately Taylor was just a fan of him because he
- 15:18Speaker 1: just wore seventy seven.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Guy.
- 15:21Speaker 1: When you were like, I don't know, we're like, oh something.
- 15:23Speaker 1: There was host of Yeah.
- 15:24Speaker 2: When when we were going to start this, I just
- 15:26Speaker 2: put out a tweet like, Hey, I'm getting in a
- 15:27Speaker 2: NASCAR who should I root for? And big the comment
- 15:31Speaker 2: section was like dominant on host of ar this is
- 15:34Speaker 2: your guy, YouTube all these things. This dude's riding people
- 15:36Speaker 2: on the wall, he's mount messing around, and he's rocking seven.
- 15:39Speaker 2: So clearly I'm like he says it's gonna be my
- 15:41Speaker 2: guy on percent. But every driver that's come on, whether
- 15:44Speaker 2: they're on the bus or right after we get done,
- 15:46Speaker 2: like their their view is like he's all right. As
- 15:50Speaker 2: it goes from that, that's probably the nice it gets
- 15:52Speaker 2: to no, fuck that guy. That's kind of like as
- 15:54Speaker 2: far as we go over there, Yeah, And so that
- 15:56Speaker 2: storyline to me is like I love it, And the
- 15:58Speaker 2: more these guys don't like him more, I'm kind of like,
- 16:00Speaker 2: I'm kind of in on this host of our guy.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I want to see what he does next. So when
- 16:04Speaker 2: it comes to rivalries, like Jeff Gordon was on the
- 16:07Speaker 2: was on the Public, Will and Charlotte yesterday. There's that
- 16:10Speaker 2: video of him that we brought up a couple times
- 16:12Speaker 2: on the show. Was it, uh yeah, yeah, last And
- 16:16Speaker 2: they're getting in a big fight and that's taking place clearly,
- 16:18Speaker 2: I'll say it for us all as as NASCAR CEO,
- 16:22Speaker 2: we don't wanna we don't want to see fights. I'm okay,
- 16:26Speaker 2: we don't want to see fights taking place. But from
- 16:29Speaker 2: a you know, endorsement entertainment, we see with the WW
- 16:32Speaker 2: he does, we see the UFC and kind of these
- 16:34Speaker 2: sports that are not like your core sports in America
- 16:38Speaker 2: might be the movie might be a little more lenient,
- 16:39Speaker 2: is I don't know. Maybe they can.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Stop in the rest. I think that's fair. So we
- 16:42Speaker 3: went through an era where you know, too many fines, right,
- 16:44Speaker 3: we're finding everybody. But what happened was, if you go
- 16:47Speaker 3: on down Pitt Road right now, a lot of guys
- 16:49Speaker 3: look like you big dudes, right, and some of our
- 16:51Speaker 3: drivers aren't that big. So guys were getting in fights
- 16:54Speaker 3: and the crew guys were piling on different Yeah, it
- 16:58Speaker 3: got a little dangerous. So where we're at is if
- 17:00Speaker 3: the drivers want to handle their business, great, When when
- 17:03Speaker 3: the crew guys start piling on, that's that's when we
- 17:05Speaker 3: got to challenge. So I don't disagree with you, I
- 17:07Speaker 3: think and with hosts of r to me, he's doing
- 17:10Speaker 3: everything we would want from a driver getting out there
- 17:13Speaker 3: now on track, right, you win, you need to win.
- 17:17Speaker 3: But you also you know he's gonna he's gonna make
- 17:19Speaker 3: his moves and drivers are gonna, you know, they'll they'll
- 17:22Speaker 3: handle what they need to handle out on the track, right,
- 17:24Speaker 3: So that that's on him to do that. But in
- 17:26Speaker 3: terms of how he races, what he may or may
- 17:29Speaker 3: not experience because of how he races on track, that's
- 17:31Speaker 3: one thing. But off the track fantastic. I mean when
- 17:34Speaker 3: we were at North Wilkesboro Speedway last weekend, he's walking
- 17:37Speaker 3: down Pitt Road and everyone's chatting his name and so
- 17:40Speaker 3: there there's a lot to that. And I think our drivers,
- 17:43Speaker 3: you know, some of them get that. Some of them
- 17:44Speaker 3: don't want to be that guy and that that's okay.
- 17:47Speaker 3: But we need rivalries, we need villains, right any sport
- 17:50Speaker 3: you need personalities, you need a reason to care.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And it sounded like to talking with Jeff
- 17:56Speaker 1: because he was alluded to he doesn't think there'll there'll
- 17:59Speaker 1: be times drivers are just dominant anymore because I guess
- 18:03Speaker 1: aerodynamic science, all the stuff you've brought up with the
- 18:05Speaker 1: newer generation cars to where there's a lot more equality
- 18:08Speaker 1: on the track versus back in the nineties where Jeff
- 18:11Speaker 1: Gordon or Earnhard, whoever was, Jimmy Johnson guys could just
- 18:14Speaker 1: dominate to where they have the championship wrapped up two
- 18:17Speaker 1: or three races before the final championship, but you know
- 18:20Speaker 1: they're they're busting balls, they're talking shit on the mic
- 18:22Speaker 1: a little bit, to where you just knew this dude
- 18:25Speaker 1: is probably gonna win the whole thing because he has
- 18:26Speaker 1: the fastest car, he's the better driver. So there's a
- 18:29Speaker 1: lot more there's a lot more like equality on the
- 18:32Speaker 1: track to where it's like I think in my head, like,
- 18:34Speaker 1: how do you get to where some of these rivalries
- 18:37Speaker 1: can be built up if it is so everybody kind
- 18:41Speaker 1: of has the same car.
- 18:42Speaker 2: So it sounds like we kind of a little foundation
- 18:44Speaker 2: right now, right, Yeah, pit crew guys stay out of.
- 18:47Speaker 3: It, that's right.
- 18:47Speaker 1: The guys that worked the mic a little bit, Yeah.
- 18:51Speaker 3: I agree, but even the race car now, so I
- 18:53Speaker 3: think that's fair. But that's why we went to this
- 18:55Speaker 3: new format too, because what was happening was if you
- 18:58Speaker 3: won any race in the playoffs. So you know, you
- 19:02Speaker 3: go the fourth race of the season, guy who's thirty
- 19:05Speaker 3: fifth in points win a race, and all of a sudden,
- 19:07Speaker 3: we're talking about the playoffs. You win the Daytona five hundred.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Instead of talking about the winner of the five hundred,
- 19:12Speaker 3: we were saying congrats. In the playoffs, it'd be like
- 19:14Speaker 3: Opening Night Monday Night football, and it was crazy. So
- 19:18Speaker 3: now you're seeing guys who are winning more races. We're
- 19:20Speaker 3: talking about it. Raddick rolled off a bunch, Denny Hamlin's
- 19:23Speaker 3: rolling off a bunch. So I think you will. I
- 19:25Speaker 3: think that there's more to do, but this format, hopefully
- 19:28Speaker 3: we'll get back to some of that too, talking about
- 19:30Speaker 3: guys who are dominating, because what was happening is if
- 19:33Speaker 3: I won five races in a row, it didn't matter.
- 19:35Speaker 3: We were talking about this guy who just made the sixteenth
- 19:37Speaker 3: spot in the playoffs and it just didn't flow. So
- 19:40Speaker 3: you got to talk about winning.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Right right?
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 19:44Speaker 1: I was gonna say, has there been a decision you encountered,
- 19:46Speaker 1: whether before CEO or currently being in the seat that
- 19:48Speaker 1: you are and now to where you're hearing a lot
- 19:51Speaker 1: of different opinions with your board or counsel or everybody
- 19:54Speaker 1: who's involved in like the front office of NASCAR, but
- 19:57Speaker 1: you feel a completely different pulse, say I'm going to
- 20:00Speaker 1: say on the internet, because that's where the fan base
- 20:02Speaker 1: can try and be the loudest to where they were
- 20:03Speaker 1: kind of differing. Yeah, pre see one decision got made
- 20:06Speaker 1: that didn't feel like it was in what you were
- 20:08Speaker 1: feeling on the pulse of the internet per se where
- 20:11Speaker 1: you saw that decision roll out and be like, oh, yeah,
- 20:13Speaker 1: that was kind of the wrong call. We do need
- 20:15Speaker 1: to kind of lean not we need to lean this
- 20:18Speaker 1: way of what we're here at, what noise we're here
- 20:19Speaker 1: and out there about our fans, but we I need
- 20:21Speaker 1: to do a better job of listening to what the
- 20:23Speaker 1: fans are saying.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I think if you look at just chasing fans, right,
- 20:28Speaker 3: so you want the sport to be as big as possible, right,
- 20:31Speaker 3: But instead of being proud of kind of who we
- 20:33Speaker 3: are and really pushing that message and pushing who we are,
- 20:37Speaker 3: we try to do some things just differently. That didn't
- 20:40Speaker 3: feel like NASCAR thinking new fans would come in and
- 20:43Speaker 3: our existing fans kind of called bullshit on us, and
- 20:45Speaker 3: so you know you weren't gaining and you were losing
- 20:48Speaker 3: some of your core. So I think by moving some
- 20:51Speaker 3: of our races back, going to the Bowman Grays, going
- 20:53Speaker 3: to North Wilkesboro, you know, we can't have thirty six
- 20:55Speaker 3: of those, but our fans are like, Okay, these guys
- 20:58Speaker 3: are listening. They haven't forgotten about us. You know, you're
- 21:00Speaker 3: not just going to overseas for races or to new markets.
- 21:03Speaker 3: And it's important for us to you know, listen to
- 21:07Speaker 3: that core fan base. You know, they got us to
- 21:09Speaker 3: where we are. And the goal isn't to have core
- 21:12Speaker 3: anew the goal is to have all these people be
- 21:15Speaker 3: core fans as we go and and have them be
- 21:17Speaker 3: proud of it. So you know, I grew up in Jersey, right,
- 21:19Speaker 3: so a lot of my buddies may or may not
- 21:21Speaker 3: have been NASCAR fans. But if you told those guys
- 21:24Speaker 3: if they're going on a golf trip or a football
- 21:26Speaker 3: game or something, hey, I'm going to Talladay Galt at
- 21:28Speaker 3: Alabama with my boys, that's a cool trip, right, and
- 21:32Speaker 3: guys would talk about it's fun and we got to
- 21:33Speaker 3: get back to that that, you know, celebrate what NASCAR
- 21:36Speaker 3: is about have fun. Younger kids want to have those experiences.
- 21:39Speaker 3: So to me, it's just pushing who we are and
- 21:41Speaker 3: being proud of it versus kind of trying not to
- 21:43Speaker 3: be somebody as well to go Yeah, is.
- 21:45Speaker 2: There ever a stroll as the CEO as a guy
- 21:47Speaker 2: calling all the shots were like, be what NASCAR is about?
- 21:50Speaker 2: But a person who doesn't consume a lot of nascars
- 21:52Speaker 2: like thinks themselves, Oh, it's just a big party. Yeah,
- 21:55Speaker 2: takes place, it's rowdy. There's one race that has a
- 21:58Speaker 2: jail inside of it because that's how crazy you get.
- 22:00Speaker 2: How do you balance as the boss of being like, yeah,
- 22:03Speaker 2: we got to emphasize how much fun you can have
- 22:05Speaker 2: a NASCAR without just turning into complete shit show.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Yeah. No, it's a great question. I think it depends
- 22:09Speaker 3: on where you're racing, right, So you know what markets
- 22:12Speaker 3: you go in, how you're talking to different fans, and
- 22:15Speaker 3: then doing a really much better job of when someone
- 22:18Speaker 3: comes to a race. It's hard, right, It's not like
- 22:21Speaker 3: you know, going to some of the other sporting events.
- 22:23Speaker 3: You know what's going on here, doing a much better
- 22:24Speaker 3: job that if you show up, here's where to go,
- 22:27Speaker 3: here's where the fan zone is, here's where the drivers
- 22:29Speaker 3: are pre race. You know, what time to get there,
- 22:31Speaker 3: in and out. So we've got to educate new fans
- 22:34Speaker 3: when they come out to a race. You know, this
- 22:36Speaker 3: is kind of what the flow is. And you know,
- 22:38Speaker 3: here's here's where maybe the party's going on, and here's
- 22:41Speaker 3: where you know, some families want to be over here.
- 22:42Speaker 3: But the great news for us too if you go,
- 22:45Speaker 3: I think in Michigan we had fifty six hundred campers,
- 22:47Speaker 3: so it's it's just fun. People are bringing their kids.
- 22:50Speaker 3: They're there Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. So you know, making
- 22:54Speaker 3: an event, making it a place where families can come
- 22:56Speaker 3: out as well, have some fun, listen to some music,
- 22:59Speaker 3: be around people you want to be around, and you know,
- 23:01Speaker 3: making an event versus just a race.
- 23:03Speaker 2: You know, you've had a couple of races that are
- 23:05Speaker 2: on Saturdays and some drivers have spoken up about we'd
- 23:08Speaker 2: like to have our race, the big race on Saturday
- 23:11Speaker 2: as opposed to Sunday. And it makes a lot to me,
- 23:13Speaker 2: just looking at face value, makes a lot of sense
- 23:15Speaker 2: because people want to come, they want to have a
- 23:18Speaker 2: good time, they want to booze it up a little bit.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Family affair on a Sunday, But at some point when
- 23:23Speaker 2: it's eight pm, you're thinking yourself, oh shit, I got
- 23:25Speaker 2: to go to.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Work on Monday.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Yeah, as NASCAR thought about me pushing anything, everything back
- 23:28Speaker 2: a little like a day to be on a hardcore Saturday.
- 23:31Speaker 3: You know, it's tough we do some Saturdays, but you know,
- 23:35Speaker 3: at the end of the day, you got to grow
- 23:36Speaker 3: your your ratings, right, and so Sundays are you know,
- 23:40Speaker 3: where it happens. You know, guests play for four o'clock Sunday,
- 23:43Speaker 3: Sunday night games all that. So for us, that's been
- 23:46Speaker 3: the sweet spot is Sunday is where the most eyeballs
- 23:48Speaker 3: are are on the sport. But it's a balance for us.
- 23:51Speaker 3: You know, Saturday, Saturday night, Friday night, you got all
- 23:54Speaker 3: short track races going around around the country, so we
- 23:56Speaker 3: want to make sure we don't step on those toes also,
- 23:58Speaker 3: so you know, I still feel like Sunday's kind of
- 24:01Speaker 3: the right mix for us. But I think in the future,
- 24:03Speaker 3: you know, as we look at when we race, where
- 24:05Speaker 3: we race, could we do a midweek race here or
- 24:07Speaker 3: there as well, So there might be some opportunities to
- 24:09Speaker 3: do that.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it'd be awesome would be, yeah, because I definitely
- 24:13Speaker 1: see what you're saying, Like, even even if you're not
- 24:15Speaker 1: boosting it up, you're thinking you're gonna go out there
- 24:17Speaker 1: for an entire day on the track, then you got
- 24:19Speaker 1: to be back. Yeah, and then you got to be back.
- 24:20Speaker 1: You got work the next day. You got all these
- 24:22Speaker 1: things to where it's like if there's a rain delay
- 24:23Speaker 1: that happens, like yeah, and we kind of need to
- 24:25Speaker 1: cut the court on this because we have to wake
- 24:27Speaker 1: up the next Yeah.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Yeah, you gotta go to work. That's fair.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Do you see much Do you see much drop off
- 24:31Speaker 1: or any drop off at all for like fans on
- 24:34Speaker 1: site Saturday versus Sunday.
- 24:37Speaker 3: No, I mean Sunday is still the big day. I
- 24:39Speaker 3: think what we've got to do a better job of is,
- 24:41Speaker 3: you know, people are out there camping, you know, for
- 24:43Speaker 3: four days, hanging out. Sometimes on a Saturday, you know,
- 24:46Speaker 3: they're in their camper outside of the track versus coming in.
- 24:49Speaker 3: So we're trying to create some more things actually in
- 24:51Speaker 3: the facility so you know, you can go have fun
- 24:53Speaker 3: with your with your buds and and some beers or
- 24:56Speaker 3: different games that are going on with the kids. But
- 24:58Speaker 3: making sure there's enough incentive to in, you know, kind
- 25:00Speaker 3: of all three days as well to the facility.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Yes, the fans can take it. Yeah, yeah, that is crazy.
- 25:05Speaker 1: It is wild when you pull up again. Nashville is
- 25:08Speaker 1: not the biggest one.
- 25:09Speaker 3: No, but even till you're that.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Yeah, but just driving through and seeing all the campers
- 25:13Speaker 1: and everybody kind of just enjoying being there the entire weekend.
- 25:16Speaker 3: They do. Man, they make it something tradition.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. The incentive part of bringing guys into
- 25:21Speaker 2: the track. What are some things that you guys have
- 25:23Speaker 2: integrated to be like, Hey, I know you guys are
- 25:25Speaker 2: having fun out there on the campers, give yourself a
- 25:26Speaker 2: little nap, but why don't you come in here?
- 25:28Speaker 3: Yeah? I think it's building up some of the drivers
- 25:31Speaker 3: on Saturdays, right, So we got some cool young drivers
- 25:33Speaker 3: who are coming up. Those names are starting to matter more.
- 25:36Speaker 3: CW's doing all the O'Reilly races now, which has been
- 25:39Speaker 3: huge for us. So people are all of a sudden
- 25:41Speaker 3: starting to say, hey, what's going on on Saturday? I
- 25:43Speaker 3: got to go check this out. See who's racing. Some
- 25:46Speaker 3: of the Cup guys are coming back and racing on Saturdays.
- 25:49Speaker 3: We went we went for a little while where we
- 25:51Speaker 3: didn't banned the cup guys, but we really limited how
- 25:53Speaker 3: many races they could come in, and we kind of
- 25:56Speaker 3: expanded that again because it puts more eyeballs on the
- 25:58Speaker 3: series and more of the young guys get compete against
- 26:00Speaker 3: some of the best. So you know, looking at some
- 26:02Speaker 3: of those things and then you know, concessions, you know,
- 26:05Speaker 3: what can we do around that, What can we make
- 26:07Speaker 3: it easier for fans to get in and out some
- 26:09Speaker 3: cheaper tickets as well. So a lot of stuff on
- 26:11Speaker 3: the board to keep it going.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Quick break from the episode. I hope you guys are
- 26:15Speaker 1: enjoining Steve with Donald. We are brought to you by
- 26:17Speaker 1: Form Energy. Form Energy delivers best in class taste with
- 26:20Speaker 1: natural flavors and zero sugar has natural caffeine derived from
- 26:23Speaker 1: green tea and Form comes at a variety of flavors
- 26:26Speaker 1: like Screaming Freedom, Blue Blitz, Orange Fury, to name a few.
- 26:29Speaker 1: And it's perfect for those who put in the work.
- 26:32Speaker 1: For the person who wakes up in the morning, gets
- 26:34Speaker 1: a workout in, puts in a full day of work
- 26:36Speaker 1: and still gives it the role when they come home.
- 26:38Speaker 3: You are a.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Form Energy guy. Form Energy. We do the work back
- 26:42Speaker 1: to the episode.
- 26:44Speaker 2: So interesting to see the game of just like getting
- 26:48Speaker 2: NASCAR back to what it is, because I mean, when
- 26:50Speaker 2: you're there, you absolutely feel it. For the CEO of
- 26:53Speaker 2: the company, what is your competition like, do you look
- 26:56Speaker 2: at another organization or another business and be like, hey,
- 26:59Speaker 2: we're essentially competing with them, or is it just it's
- 27:01Speaker 2: you're basically playing against your former self every single day.
- 27:04Speaker 3: No, I wouldn't say a former self. I would say,
- 27:07Speaker 3: you know, that's something aspirational, which I think we can
- 27:09Speaker 3: get to. It's it's really every form of sports and
- 27:11Speaker 3: entertainment now. I mean you can do anything now, which
- 27:14Speaker 3: is which is cool but also a challenge. So for us, it's,
- 27:18Speaker 3: you know, we've got to be culturally relevant. So when
- 27:20Speaker 3: your kids are growing up, you know you have a
- 27:22Speaker 3: football in the backyard, basketball, soccer, ball, whatever it is.
- 27:26Speaker 3: How does racing get into the conversation when when a
- 27:28Speaker 3: kid's in elementary school, middle school, and you're not the
- 27:32Speaker 3: kid whose dad may be in racing, you're just a
- 27:34Speaker 3: you're just a fan, and you're just starting to look
- 27:36Speaker 3: at this so sneaker culture, car culture, music culture, all
- 27:39Speaker 3: those things where we're starting to really you know, see
- 27:41Speaker 3: NASCAR get back a little bit. You know when when
- 27:44Speaker 3: we were going to get Dale Junior was in MTV
- 27:46Speaker 3: videos and those kind of things. And we're seeing our
- 27:48Speaker 3: drivers get out there and do some of that. And
- 27:51Speaker 3: as that comes, I think the sport more and more
- 27:53Speaker 3: will grow and then and then where we're racing. Right
- 27:55Speaker 3: So we're not in the Northwest right now, We're not
- 27:57Speaker 3: in Denver. You look at some different markets, love to
- 28:00Speaker 3: be in New York. So if we can get into
- 28:02Speaker 3: those places and just you know, put a race where
- 28:04Speaker 3: people are, I think that's another area to really grow. Awesome.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Who who's a league or an organization that will that
- 28:12Speaker 1: you always kind of gravitate towards to see what they're doing.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Because you got a white MLB, NBA, you got Goodal
- 28:18Speaker 1: with the NFL, you got Dana White with the UFC.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Like now you being in this seat, the first one
- 28:23Speaker 1: being in the seat, Who like, what's a league in
- 28:25Speaker 1: organization or or one of the commissioners you like, stop
- 28:28Speaker 1: and be like, I want to listen to him. I
- 28:29Speaker 1: want to see what he says.
- 28:30Speaker 3: That's a great question. So so, uh, I'm clearly not
- 28:34Speaker 3: Dana White, right, but I love how they've gotten out
- 28:37Speaker 3: there and really kind of broken through, and I think
- 28:39Speaker 3: they've done a lot of cool stuff with the younger generation.
- 28:43Speaker 3: If I look at products. For me, which I hate
- 28:45Speaker 3: you saying the word product because I just so grew
- 28:48Speaker 3: up soccer as well. So the English Premier League to
- 28:51Speaker 3: me is just the pinnacle of soccer. They don't want music,
- 28:55Speaker 3: they don't want it. They just want the game and
- 28:57Speaker 3: they want stars. So how do they get that passion?
- 28:59Speaker 3: How do they have that true passion from a fan,
- 29:02Speaker 3: so we can study that. And then more recently, I
- 29:04Speaker 3: think what the PGA is doing, and Brian Rolapp came
- 29:08Speaker 3: in from the NFL spent a lot of time talking
- 29:11Speaker 3: to the players where we want to go, let's build
- 29:13Speaker 3: a new model. I've kind of done the same thing
- 29:16Speaker 3: right now, just doing a lot of talking to people,
- 29:17Speaker 3: looking at where we're at and seeing where we want
- 29:20Speaker 3: to go directionally. So it's a little bit of everything.
- 29:23Speaker 3: And then probably if you look long term internationally, I
- 29:26Speaker 3: think the NBA has done a fantastic job of putting
- 29:30Speaker 3: legs in different countries, but everybody aspires to still come
- 29:34Speaker 3: to the NBA. I think if you know, we were
- 29:37Speaker 3: if we were ever there, which one day we will
- 29:39Speaker 3: be you know, you're gonna see NASCAR around the world,
- 29:41Speaker 3: but you always want to come race here against the best.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:44Speaker 2: It's so difficult though, because like the barrier of entry
- 29:46Speaker 2: to become a driver so expensive. Bubble talking about, yeah,
- 29:50Speaker 2: two hundred and fifty thousand dollars as a kid trying
- 29:53Speaker 2: to like basically take these steps towards being a NASCAR driver.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Eventually talked about like the marketing, the shoes, the cars,
- 30:00Speaker 2: all those things, which are which I agree, like those
- 30:02Speaker 2: are that's what's cool. Like an old school cotton, badass
- 30:06Speaker 2: graphic Nascar tea. It goes a long way, right, I've
- 30:10Speaker 2: still got I got a Dale Earnhart one in my
- 30:11Speaker 2: closet right now. But if you're looking at these kids
- 30:14Speaker 2: and you're like, I want to elevate the game. We
- 30:16Speaker 2: want to have lifelong fans, Like, are are we thinking
- 30:19Speaker 2: of ways to how do we integrate you know, eight
- 30:22Speaker 2: to fourteen year olds into Let's get them in some
- 30:25Speaker 2: go carts, Let's get them into the starts at racing
- 30:27Speaker 2: and make it a little bit more affordable. Because you
- 30:29Speaker 2: look at basketball, like the talent is you know, there's
- 30:32Speaker 2: so much talent everywhere with basketball, but any kid can
- 30:34Speaker 2: pick up a basketball, like.
- 30:37Speaker 1: It's the most popular sport. You just go out there.
- 30:39Speaker 1: It doesn't matter. Make the ball around, yeah, how much
- 30:41Speaker 1: money you have or anything. You're just kicking a ball
- 30:42Speaker 1: around the day.
- 30:43Speaker 2: You can see a small transition just from like soccer
- 30:45Speaker 2: basketball to hockey, which is like you have to have
- 30:47Speaker 2: you know, you have to be above average time every
- 30:49Speaker 2: income to even you know, have the entry there. Because
- 30:52Speaker 2: it's a very expensive sport and the NASCAR is its
- 30:54Speaker 2: own entity way up here. It's like you got to
- 30:56Speaker 2: have money to do it.
- 30:58Speaker 1: So a lot of luck involved, it sounds with every
- 31:00Speaker 1: driver we've had on there's this story that I kind
- 31:02Speaker 1: of there as stories that you gravitate towards because it
- 31:05Speaker 1: does seem like luck plays a big factor on who
- 31:07Speaker 1: you meet, who you know, being patient enough, just waiting
- 31:11Speaker 1: on the opportunity and then fortunately it happens for guys.
- 31:13Speaker 3: I think two things on it. I think great great points.
- 31:16Speaker 3: So if you look at karting and the really young
- 31:19Speaker 3: age karting compared to soccer and all these groups. Now
- 31:23Speaker 3: you know travel ball, right, and it's a lot of
- 31:26Speaker 3: money people are spending it, And I would put kind
- 31:28Speaker 3: of that karting experience, the real youth up against that
- 31:31Speaker 3: to be in the game. Where we've got to fix
- 31:33Speaker 3: it is once you get out of that realm, you know,
- 31:35Speaker 3: late model stock whatever it is, that's where it's it's hard,
- 31:39Speaker 3: and we got to figure out a model that goes
- 31:40Speaker 3: from you know, six to eight year old all the
- 31:43Speaker 3: way through. And it's a big task force right now
- 31:45Speaker 3: because I think that's spot on to make sure that
- 31:48Speaker 3: it's accessible. I mean, you know it would be cool
- 31:50Speaker 3: is you go into Dick Sporting Goods, right, buy your
- 31:52Speaker 3: goa kart kitch, show up and go race on a
- 31:54Speaker 3: local track. Yeah, that's that's one solve, which I think wrong.
- 31:57Speaker 3: But then you got to fix it to that it's
- 31:59Speaker 3: not so expended to get up to the next level.
- 32:01Speaker 3: And so that's that's that's a longer term, but something
- 32:03Speaker 3: we absolutely have to do. I agree would be.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Cool too as well. I mean, this is a brainstort, worfficient. Yes,
- 32:11Speaker 2: this is a good I love like one thing just
- 32:13Speaker 2: being a football guy, like when I was in high school.
- 32:15Speaker 2: It's the rivals. It's twenty four to seven. You're looking
- 32:17Speaker 2: at a ranking that database. It sick if NASCAR had
- 32:21Speaker 2: some sort of database that was like looking at these
- 32:24Speaker 2: guys that are on the come up, right, so so
- 32:26Speaker 2: fans can be like, oh, who is this guy coming up?
- 32:28Speaker 2: He's a five star athlete. I can't wait to watch
- 32:30Speaker 2: his career. Now when he makes it into the Cup Series,
- 32:33Speaker 2: everyone's like, hey, I've been watching you since you were.
- 32:35Speaker 3: I'd say, that's fantastic. Idea, thank you. That was free.
- 32:41Speaker 1: You got to pay him, that's awesome.
- 32:43Speaker 2: I mean, make a website twenty four dollars a month,
- 32:45Speaker 2: it's that easy, Like you, I mean, you know the
- 32:47Speaker 2: guy who started all those companies, we can get him
- 32:49Speaker 2: in touch.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:50Speaker 3: Yeah, is what happens right now is the OEMs, you know, Toyota,
- 32:55Speaker 3: GM four, they've got their their their charts. But I
- 32:57Speaker 3: think that would be awesome now, that'd be really cool, dude,
- 33:00Speaker 3: that it's that draft.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a brainstorm.
- 33:07Speaker 1: But you're you're like, you're right.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Jeff Gordon's things draft for crew guys.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Really it was like when when you're talking to everybody,
- 33:14Speaker 1: there's part of it it's like how do you even
- 33:15Speaker 1: find these drivers? But if you do have a database,
- 33:18Speaker 1: you do are able to kind of follow these kids.
- 33:20Speaker 1: And know like this has been a prodigy since the
- 33:23Speaker 1: beginning of time.
- 33:23Speaker 3: That's a good point because you know, I'm a huge
- 33:25Speaker 3: just sports fan in general. So you'd go out to
- 33:27Speaker 3: you know, Florida high school football is awesome, right, so
- 33:30Speaker 3: we'd go when you know my kids high school, you'd
- 33:33Speaker 3: be like, oh, this five stars coming into play. Kids
- 33:35Speaker 3: going to know, I'm going to watch that game.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Right about yourself, did you say you played college ball?
- 33:42Speaker 3: I try to play like six months and then got
- 33:44Speaker 3: the acts.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Okay, but even even even got the called that.
- 33:48Speaker 3: No, I got no. They were like, hey, man, get
- 33:50Speaker 3: off the get off the beer.
- 33:53Speaker 1: But even as a high school athlete and coming up
- 33:55Speaker 1: like for me, like the Negative Woods, I was from Balti, Missouri,
- 33:58Speaker 1: there wasn't a lot of football recruiting in our area.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Like I would be obsessed with being on Rivals or
- 34:04Speaker 1: now twenty four to seven or scout dot com back
- 34:07Speaker 1: then and seeing like, oh, they have Nike camps here,
- 34:10Speaker 1: they have stuff where I can go get in front
- 34:11Speaker 1: of coaches, or go to Notre Dame or go to
- 34:14Speaker 1: these you know, immersive camps that you can go to
- 34:16Speaker 1: to get in front of people, to where it's like
- 34:18Speaker 1: I'm sitting there dreaming and being fascinated, like, oh, I
- 34:20Speaker 1: think I could be a three start. I think it
- 34:22Speaker 1: could be a four So I think I could be
- 34:23Speaker 1: a five star. But you knew these are places in
- 34:26Speaker 1: Indiana or Arizona or California where you could go to
- 34:30Speaker 1: have a camp and showcase your skills to. As a kid,
- 34:34Speaker 1: you become obsessed with like, oh, I need to go
- 34:35Speaker 1: to these camps tohe you have you could have. I'm
- 34:38Speaker 1: sure you have plenty of young drivers out there, young
- 34:41Speaker 1: kids who would be fascinating to be a race car
- 34:43Speaker 1: driver one day to where they're wearing you know, Brisco
- 34:46Speaker 1: jerseys at the house, where they're wearing Denny Hamlin stuff
- 34:48Speaker 1: at the house playing the video game. Or it's like, man,
- 34:50Speaker 1: where could I go to showcase? Or what's a race
- 34:52Speaker 1: that's out there around the country, whether it's go karting
- 34:55Speaker 1: or the stops or whatever it is to know like
- 34:57Speaker 1: these are the ones to go to and Dad in
- 35:00Speaker 1: the summertime, could we save up to where I can
- 35:02Speaker 1: go to this race? This is a race where I
- 35:03Speaker 1: need to be in front of people. There is that
- 35:05Speaker 1: data base like the.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Scout Scout combines that they would have like regionally.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Yeah, where you just know where to go. It's not
- 35:11Speaker 1: like you're going to your county track and like one
- 35:13Speaker 1: day you get tapped on the shoulder. You're like, I
- 35:14Speaker 1: don't even know how this happened. I kind of got lucky,
- 35:16Speaker 1: get it a little.
- 35:17Speaker 3: I think that's I think that's that's great idea. I
- 35:19Speaker 3: think that the drivers right, and the parents probably know.
- 35:22Speaker 3: But to your point, no one knows, right. So telling
- 35:25Speaker 3: that story I think would be huge for us. Just
- 35:28Speaker 3: the amount of kids that are out there racing. I
- 35:29Speaker 3: think people don't even know.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Kids who are obsessed with them. Their parents might not
- 35:32Speaker 1: be like, oh, mom and dad, could I go to
- 35:34Speaker 1: this thing? What is this thing? I've been doing all
- 35:36Speaker 1: the homework and all the research.
- 35:37Speaker 3: I love.
- 35:38Speaker 1: These are the places I need to go to.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Imagine a track that people go to the regions where
- 35:42Speaker 2: all the cars are the same. You go, you sign up,
- 35:45Speaker 2: and you put your name in, you put in the
- 35:46Speaker 2: dr there's a combine, some sort of combin I don't
- 35:49Speaker 2: know what drivers have to do.
- 35:50Speaker 1: We do that now.
- 35:51Speaker 3: For we've had like a driver program trying to develop
- 35:55Speaker 3: drivers much much smaller. But you know that's how Bubba
- 35:57Speaker 3: Wallace came up through the system, Daniel Suarez came up
- 36:00Speaker 3: the system. But that needs to be times a thousand, right,
- 36:03Speaker 3: It needs to be everywhere that can do these kind
- 36:05Speaker 3: of things, because kids who I think want to race,
- 36:07Speaker 3: but have no idea how to do it, you know.
- 36:09Speaker 3: I racing has been fantastic for us, so you're able
- 36:11Speaker 3: to do some sim things and translate that, but unless
- 36:14Speaker 3: you can go out and do the real thing, doesn't matter.
- 36:16Speaker 3: So I like the way we're thinking here.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Well, you see the trickle down effect too, even in
- 36:24Speaker 1: all sports, whether it's baseball, football, basketball, like nil is
- 36:28Speaker 1: such a big thing now, I'll trickle down so much
- 36:31Speaker 1: into high school toward it, even it's starting to touch
- 36:33Speaker 1: middle school.
- 36:34Speaker 3: It's crazy right now.
- 36:35Speaker 1: But these kids have all these dreams, right, And then
- 36:37Speaker 1: you have the influence of social media to where the
- 36:40Speaker 1: athletes are the racers themselves, to where if in this
- 36:43Speaker 1: hypothetical world there is this database, but kids become their
- 36:47Speaker 1: own kind of influence. They use their own social media
- 36:49Speaker 1: to try and get their name out.
- 36:50Speaker 3: There, which is what we want.
- 36:51Speaker 1: If there is a pool too of like hey, I'm
- 36:53Speaker 1: rated this and the nascars or the racing circuit at
- 36:56Speaker 1: a lower level to where kids are wanting to create
- 36:59Speaker 1: content around it, to where you just you just see
- 37:01Speaker 1: the domino effect of this world that the or that
- 37:04Speaker 1: football basketball has created.
- 37:06Speaker 3: So I think it would be I think it's great.
- 37:09Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Do regions everywhere and then each each other. Yeah, yeah,
- 37:14Speaker 2: and then you have one this person wins a X,
- 37:16Speaker 2: Y and Z chance to go racing this series.
- 37:18Speaker 1: You're dropping your photo on the top of the podium.
- 37:20Speaker 1: I'm coming for this regional race.
- 37:22Speaker 3: Yeah, it's kind of competing.
- 37:24Speaker 1: You kind of can't help but look away, right, and
- 37:27Speaker 1: then somebody in the big leagues like NASCAR, they just
- 37:30Speaker 1: could be on the internet at some point time and.
- 37:31Speaker 3: Just come across out there who talks about you know.
- 37:34Speaker 2: We need we need a mouthy young kid who's a prodigy.
- 37:38Speaker 2: So if you can find one of those, that'd be awesome,
- 37:40Speaker 2: and then get a veteran racer and then have them
- 37:43Speaker 2: do like a one on one right fifteen laps right now,
- 37:46Speaker 2: we'll see how good you actually are.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Well, you'll kind of create those kids will kind of
- 37:49Speaker 1: create their own personality because they're not even they're not
- 37:51Speaker 1: there yet, so they're gonna be young minded, thinking like
- 37:54Speaker 1: this is the way you're gonna do it. They'll get
- 37:56Speaker 1: humbled in the big leagues, but you'll still those personalities
- 37:59Speaker 1: will start to get created because there's a formula and
- 38:02Speaker 1: a platforms out there to kind of showcase them. Being
- 38:05Speaker 1: at the top of the podium. Keep dropping a little
- 38:08Speaker 1: noise with the caption, right.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Because you brought you up I racing, which is awesome.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Was that William Byron him his come up and doing that.
- 38:14Speaker 2: That's awesome. But from me, like, if I'm consuming content
- 38:18Speaker 2: and I'm watching these racers on the internet, it's like
- 38:21Speaker 2: it doesn't it's not grabbing me, being like I got
- 38:23Speaker 2: to watch this guy kind of tilt back and forth
- 38:25Speaker 2: and this really cool machine for me. But you want
- 38:27Speaker 2: to see it. You want to like feel it and.
- 38:29Speaker 3: Be apart, you want to be out there. Yeah, I
- 38:30Speaker 3: think I think it's a good training ground, right. But
- 38:33Speaker 3: but Ryan Priest and Bush around when we're coming over
- 38:36Speaker 3: here today, we're talking about this that they're on the
- 38:38Speaker 3: sim which is great, but it's not translating to when
- 38:42Speaker 3: they actually were able to test with their crew guys
- 38:45Speaker 3: and talk about here's what I'm feeling, Here's what I'm
- 38:47Speaker 3: doing you know, versus talking to a computer, right, it
- 38:49Speaker 3: doesn't translate. So we got to get back to a
- 38:51Speaker 3: little bit more of that interaction between the driver crew.
- 38:54Speaker 3: Here's what I need in the car, so more testing.
- 38:56Speaker 3: But to your point, I racing is good to a point,
- 38:59Speaker 3: but then you got to get on the track and
- 39:01Speaker 3: apply it. So I think having that ability to go
- 39:03Speaker 3: out there maybe in a cheaper way kind of I race,
- 39:05Speaker 3: but then got to be able to do late madel racing.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Gotta get it rip. So you said two things during
- 39:12Speaker 2: that that I got my mind going. One is since
- 39:16Speaker 2: twenty twenty, your guys is race your week and how
- 39:20Speaker 2: guys are allowed to train, how much time they're allowed
- 39:21Speaker 2: on the track. Are we ever going to get back
- 39:23Speaker 2: to pre twenty twenty type of practicing taking place? It
- 39:27Speaker 2: was it like three hours, Yeah, three hours a week
- 39:29Speaker 2: and that's it to be in their car's kind of
- 39:31Speaker 2: fine tune things.
- 39:32Speaker 3: I think you'll see a little bit more practice. So
- 39:34Speaker 3: we've tweaked it so a much longer practice now that
- 39:37Speaker 3: we have, which will be good. So we're going to
- 39:38Speaker 3: see how that works. We did a qualifying for the
- 39:41Speaker 3: All Star Race up in Dover, which we had the
- 39:43Speaker 3: crews involved, where guys would go out, bomb a lap,
- 39:47Speaker 3: come down, pitt road, change tires, back out one more lap,
- 39:50Speaker 3: so it's kind of a three lap qualifying versus just
- 39:52Speaker 3: the car going out. Crews were involved, fans loved it.
- 39:55Speaker 3: I think you can see more of that at select races,
- 39:57Speaker 3: so we kind of bring the crews and drivers into
- 39:59Speaker 3: it more content that we can put out. So I
- 40:01Speaker 3: think we'll see more of those things and test some
- 40:03Speaker 3: things as we go, you know, and then have drivers
- 40:06Speaker 3: just doing more, which they're doing right now when they're
- 40:09Speaker 3: at track, so it's just good once they're there. The
- 40:12Speaker 3: on track content is good, but also just interacting with
- 40:14Speaker 3: fans I think is what really drives the needle for
- 40:16Speaker 3: us too.
- 40:18Speaker 2: And then the other thing that came to my mind
- 40:20Speaker 2: was why not call out another league and against them
- 40:23Speaker 2: like f ones out there. They're pretty mouthy. Yeah, yes,
- 40:27Speaker 2: they think they're so sweet. As their cars look different,
- 40:29Speaker 2: why don't we get them in a stock car and
- 40:32Speaker 2: be like, give us your best. And I hate to
- 40:33Speaker 2: bring it up, but I bring it up every time
- 40:35Speaker 2: Tallada Good Nights.
- 40:38Speaker 3: Opinion on that movie that's I love that movie.
- 40:40Speaker 2: You love the.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Move the movie man. Yeah, we gotta gott to grow
- 40:43Speaker 3: the sports. So you know, we got hopefully, you know,
- 40:46Speaker 3: fingers crossed, we might have a Days of Thunder two
- 40:48Speaker 3: coming out, so hopefully that'll be cool on that. That
- 40:52Speaker 3: wouldn't be us. That's that's the paramount. Guys. Let them
- 40:55Speaker 3: know that you guys are good, good, we'll perfect perfect.
- 41:01Speaker 1: We're not too desperate, but we are. Yeah, but we are. Yeah.
- 41:08Speaker 1: We still might say no.
- 41:09Speaker 3: Exactly depends on what goes out that we.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Thought about taking and being like, you know what, dude,
- 41:14Speaker 2: fuck your league in a respectful way. This is just
- 41:16Speaker 2: me Taylor talking. You know what, dude, you guys think
- 41:18Speaker 2: you're so great over there in Europe. Dude, that's not cool.
- 41:21Speaker 2: What's cool is America.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Over here?
- 41:24Speaker 2: See what he can do.
- 41:25Speaker 1: We're sending a NASCAR guy.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Here's no no, no, no, no, no home field advantage. Here's
- 41:30Speaker 3: how I think about it. So we have a NASCAR
- 41:32Speaker 3: Europe Series. It's really small. Uh we race it brands
- 41:36Speaker 3: Hatch and there's fifty thousand people there. It's crazy and
- 41:39Speaker 3: it's and the whole race is around like American or
- 41:42Speaker 3: you go there, you'd be like, what is happening? Guys?
- 41:44Speaker 3: In football? Helmets, cheerleaders, they're just like celebrating everything about America.
- 41:48Speaker 3: So what I do know is we took the garage
- 41:51Speaker 3: fifty six car that this is Jim France's vision over
- 41:54Speaker 3: to La Mom. Everyone was. They loved it. It was incredible.
- 41:58Speaker 3: They just love the NASCAR sound and feel. So I
- 42:00Speaker 3: think the next step for us is just plopping a
- 42:03Speaker 3: race in Europe and saying this is how we race,
- 42:06Speaker 3: this is this is in my opinion, what you know,
- 42:08Speaker 3: NASCAR racing is all about. And I think fans will
- 42:10Speaker 3: love it, and I think they'll realize that, you know,
- 42:12Speaker 3: hey there's more beating and banging, it's more personality. You know,
- 42:15Speaker 3: we're not F one, right, that's a different different feel,
- 42:17Speaker 3: different vibe, and they've got their own lane. But I
- 42:19Speaker 3: think I think we can translate more to you know,
- 42:23Speaker 3: just everybody who's kind of growing up, just like in sports,
- 42:25Speaker 3: wanting to around people. And you know, F One's that
- 42:27Speaker 3: aspirational brand to me. You know, we're kind of the
- 42:30Speaker 3: common person that let's go and let's go have some fun.
- 42:33Speaker 3: You know. I want the sport also to be a
- 42:34Speaker 3: place where you know, athletes come to to other events
- 42:38Speaker 3: and you get hounded right, and it's it's a challenge
- 42:40Speaker 3: for NASCAR. I wanted to be a place that, you know,
- 42:43Speaker 3: you're in the NFL, MLB, coming to a NASCAR is
- 42:45Speaker 3: hang out, have some fun with your buddies and just
- 42:48Speaker 3: let loose, be yourself and then you know no one's
- 42:51Speaker 3: gonna bug you have some fun. I mean, Marshall Lynch
- 42:52Speaker 3: came to Daytona. You know, we had them do the
- 42:55Speaker 3: Daytona five hundred unsolicited said I want to albrate my
- 43:00Speaker 3: birthday at Talladay. We're like, what showed up? I mean,
- 43:04Speaker 3: we spent two days with the guys in the infield,
- 43:06Speaker 3: cruising around, having a good time and just loved it.
- 43:08Speaker 3: And that's that's the experience we want to have and
- 43:10Speaker 3: bring to everybody that this is the sports for everybody.
- 43:13Speaker 3: You can find your own lane and just have some
- 43:15Speaker 3: fun when you go yeah yeah.
- 43:17Speaker 1: And you when you bring up NASCAR Europe like plopping
- 43:21Speaker 1: a race there, when you say, like it's a badass
- 43:23Speaker 1: American sport. You need a little bit of country first country.
- 43:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I like the.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Place, like that's the ship that gets people the.
- 43:32Speaker 3: Passion right that. You saw the World Cup and it
- 43:34Speaker 3: was awesome watching some of those guys Norway doing the
- 43:36Speaker 3: whole thing. I don't know what happened there, right, that
- 43:43Speaker 3: was out the right, but just.
- 43:46Speaker 1: Get some of that.
- 43:47Speaker 3: No, I like that the country pride. Yeah, yep, that's good.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Take down the four and that's cool. We joke on
- 43:54Speaker 1: this fun time.
- 43:56Speaker 2: We're available for the next days of thunder fun time.
- 44:00Speaker 3: An I deal, Yeah, and.
- 44:01Speaker 1: I was gonna I was gonna go back into us
- 44:06Speaker 1: I D eight. Yeah. And our wheelhouse is football. It
- 44:10Speaker 1: always has been, always will be. Oh yeah, oh yeah
- 44:15Speaker 1: in the NFL. The NFL is that such a great
- 44:17Speaker 1: job of having the sports seem like it's all year
- 44:20Speaker 1: round through schedule, releases, draft, free agency. Is there ever
- 44:25Speaker 1: gonna be a world to where there's like a an
- 44:29Speaker 1: open market window of free agency in Nascar because that
- 44:33Speaker 1: that in itself as far as selling or entertainment to
- 44:36Speaker 1: the fans again just spitballing as a fan like somebody
- 44:42Speaker 1: becoming available.
- 44:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know, because there's a lot.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Of loyalty in NASCAR when we do try to pry
- 44:47Speaker 1: on contracting and stuff like that with guys, or where
- 44:49Speaker 1: there's ever a time that you're gonna leave and if
- 44:52Speaker 1: there is just a window to where guys are up
- 44:54Speaker 1: for grabs or pit crew guys are up for grabs
- 44:56Speaker 1: and there's a market going on to our damn you know,
- 44:59Speaker 1: h or got you know something, I think.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Salary cap but you guys did have an Adam Schefter.
- 45:04Speaker 1: That freaking news.
- 45:10Speaker 2: Oh my god, twenty guaranteed. It's like they moved from
- 45:14Speaker 2: this motor crew.
- 45:17Speaker 3: That's a good question. I think I think it happens, right,
- 45:19Speaker 3: it happens, but outside of the media with with teams.
- 45:22Speaker 3: So you know, we got a new model now with
- 45:25Speaker 3: with the charters, with the teams long term, who knows,
- 45:27Speaker 3: you know, I think we got to look at you know,
- 45:29Speaker 3: the pit crews are so valuable right now and you
- 45:32Speaker 3: know you guys saw it to think yesterday right with
- 45:34Speaker 3: with Gordon right, it's incredible what they're putting into that.
- 45:37Speaker 3: So you know, I would love you probably so the
- 45:42Speaker 3: clips of their like.
- 45:45Speaker 1: It is nuts. And I'm sitting there asking stuff, you know,
- 45:48Speaker 1: off the camera because we can't have some stuff can't
- 45:50Speaker 1: be on the camera. But I'm like, are you guys
- 45:52Speaker 1: just you recruiter? Somebody takes a visit here, they go
- 45:55Speaker 1: take a visit somewhere else, and it's like they're the
- 45:57Speaker 1: first ones with the facility like that. I'm like, well,
- 45:59Speaker 1: you guys are heading above everybody else. In my opinion,
- 46:01Speaker 1: I've only been to one spot, right, but I'm thinking
- 46:04Speaker 1: that is nuts to where if you do have some
- 46:06Speaker 1: of this, you know it is entertainment value to the
- 46:09Speaker 1: fans the inside of it, or you're going to play
- 46:12Speaker 1: for this team or that team, it is incredible what
- 46:14Speaker 1: they have over there.
- 46:15Speaker 3: Well, I think in the storylines, we've got to do
- 46:17Speaker 3: a much better job. And I have heard this from
- 46:19Speaker 3: some of the folks when you talk about F one,
- 46:21Speaker 3: you know, what do they do better? What can we
- 46:23Speaker 3: learn from so F one? You got the drivers for sure, right,
- 46:26Speaker 3: but then you got the team principles, you know, to
- 46:29Speaker 3: arguing between each other. You've got a lot of different people.
- 46:31Speaker 3: We have so many stories we could be telling about,
- 46:34Speaker 3: you know, who's running this team? Who are these guys
- 46:36Speaker 3: on Pitt Road and not just a quick like you know,
- 46:38Speaker 3: thirty second feature on you know that guy was just
- 46:40Speaker 3: starting quarterback at Nebraska and now he's on the pick
- 46:43Speaker 3: or what you know, holy cow, And those are some
- 46:46Speaker 3: of the stories that are happening. But we need to
- 46:48Speaker 3: kind of dive deep in that and so you know,
- 46:50Speaker 3: start talking about the front tire changer from the you know,
- 46:53Speaker 3: the eighty eight car versus the seventy seven car and
- 46:56Speaker 3: what happened here and who are these guys? So there
- 46:58Speaker 3: is a lot more to do there do.
- 47:01Speaker 1: Because the people will come up like, oh, you pick
- 47:03Speaker 1: crew guys make anything. It's like, oh, they make a
- 47:05Speaker 1: good deal of money. Their former athletes or people come
- 47:09Speaker 1: from different trades. And even when we were getting the
- 47:11Speaker 1: tour there yesterday, like they have a fucking combine that
- 47:14Speaker 1: takes place there where like one hundred people come in,
- 47:17Speaker 1: then they trim them down, then they get to like
- 47:19Speaker 1: twenty and then they're like the twenty guys kind of
- 47:21Speaker 1: on call for a potential roster spot that could open up.
- 47:24Speaker 2: I'm like, that is fascinating how much how much of
- 47:27Speaker 2: that is being put in the media.
- 47:32Speaker 3: Fertile ground.
- 47:33Speaker 1: They got their own squads, like their own money. They
- 47:35Speaker 1: gotta be. They gotta keep the secrets in tight, right,
- 47:38Speaker 1: like you guys are running a fucking operation.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Don't open the whole door for me, but just crack
- 47:41Speaker 2: it a little bit, but you will peek in.
- 47:42Speaker 1: You gotta look in the cookie jar from the fan
- 47:44Speaker 1: perspectives because people would have no clue.
- 47:46Speaker 2: It's just it's the And then if you're sick, you
- 47:50Speaker 2: show me a little bit, right. I don't know what.
- 47:52Speaker 3: I don't know how guys are carrying jack swinging jacks
- 47:55Speaker 3: around now that never used. Toblish's so many things that
- 47:57Speaker 3: go into this, and you know, once one team does that,
- 47:59Speaker 3: others are trying in it. It's it's unbelievable.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Yeah, all these guys are running, yeah, legitimately.
- 48:04Speaker 1: And then I'm like, okay, so what do you do
- 48:06Speaker 1: for the combine? They're talking about changing direction and this combine.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Where's rich Eysen?
- 48:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we need some coverage. Only do if you
- 48:13Speaker 1: need on the bar.
- 48:15Speaker 2: We got above those numbers up.
- 48:17Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:18Speaker 1: And one guy we're walking through beautiful sauna, hot tub,
- 48:20Speaker 1: cold tubs like the whole nine. Dude, it is unreal
- 48:23Speaker 1: what they got training rooms Hendrick correct, Yeah, training rooms
- 48:27Speaker 1: with tables for massage, soft tish, yeah, taping wrists, ankles
- 48:32Speaker 1: of commercial great hyperbaric chambers, red light beds, whole nine.
- 48:36Speaker 1: And then there's one cat who's sitting in the sauna
- 48:39Speaker 1: and our boy, the guy who's giving us a tour,
- 48:41Speaker 1: Evan He's like, Oh, his brother's with the Chargers right now,
- 48:44Speaker 1: and I'm like, and he's in their sweat and listen
- 48:46Speaker 1: to the dude there. It's athletes in their.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Motiversity in the song.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, like, what's this guy's story? I want to
- 48:53Speaker 1: know this guy's story.
- 48:54Speaker 2: And so Hendrick, this is they're the only one with
- 48:56Speaker 2: a facility like this. So that brings me to Hendrick
- 48:59Speaker 2: is essentially the new Yankees, as far as.
- 49:02Speaker 3: That's able, you could say. You could say when people
- 49:04Speaker 3: talk about it, they talk about Penske, Hendrick and Gibbs
- 49:07Speaker 3: is kind of the big the.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Big Those are the big three. Those are the big three.
- 49:10Speaker 1: Somebody like Gibbs, I know, facility like this. He sees this,
- 49:12Speaker 1: it's gonna piss him off. We need to get it.
- 49:13Speaker 2: He's sitting in the boardroom right now.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:15Speaker 2: Yeah, he's got a nice mahogany desk and he's sitting
- 49:17Speaker 2: behind it with the cigargo.
- 49:19Speaker 1: And guys like this. You need the camera on him
- 49:20Speaker 1: with his reaction.
- 49:21Speaker 3: Yeah. I was in a meeting with them last week
- 49:23Speaker 3: and it's one of the first things that you see
- 49:25Speaker 3: that facility over there, because they pride themselves on what
- 49:27Speaker 3: they do on Pitt Road too, So it's it'll be
- 49:29Speaker 3: interesting to see where everybody goes.
- 49:31Speaker 2: Oh yeah, the game's change games change running eyes right now?
- 49:34Speaker 2: Is so with these three having the most money, is
- 49:38Speaker 2: there a cap involved or are we not even near
- 49:40Speaker 2: a cap that open when it comes to getting racers started,
- 49:44Speaker 2: getting drivers, getting Pitt crew guys, who's the best, you know,
- 49:48Speaker 2: chief of whatever, like these types of things. Clearly I'm
- 49:51Speaker 2: green in this stuff, but all these things, if you
- 49:54Speaker 2: want all the best guys, it's like money solves most
- 49:56Speaker 2: of those problems.
- 49:57Speaker 3: So right now, there's there's no cap. There has been
- 50:00Speaker 3: a lot of discussion with with the Cup teams. I'd
- 50:03Speaker 3: say seventy percent for it, you know, the guys who
- 50:06Speaker 3: are winning a lot. Maybe not. I mean you're seeing
- 50:08Speaker 3: this in baseball right now, right with you know, the Dodgers.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Yeah, you get the leverage here to get it up.
- 50:12Speaker 3: And so yeah, and so that's I think we're we're
- 50:15Speaker 3: definitely gonna look at something. I don't know if it'll
- 50:17Speaker 3: go through, but it's it's more so you know, not
- 50:19Speaker 3: to not for driver salaries or anything like that, but
- 50:22Speaker 3: just what what is the amount that can be spent
- 50:24Speaker 3: to go racing? On a team, and it's complicated because
- 50:27Speaker 3: a lot of these guys are in different businesses, you know,
- 50:29Speaker 3: and it's not just the race team. They've got different
- 50:31Speaker 3: entities that are involved and helping fund the race team.
- 50:34Speaker 3: So it'd be hard to police. But you know, we'll
- 50:36Speaker 3: look at it. I think it's, you know, as a
- 50:38Speaker 3: sport evolves, we've got to make sure that we put
- 50:40Speaker 3: on the most competitive races. And you know, we don't
- 50:43Speaker 3: want to see where three organizations win every single race.
- 50:46Speaker 3: That's not good for the fans. So we've got to
- 50:48Speaker 3: look at how we balance that, see how it ebbs
- 50:51Speaker 3: and flows as well.
- 50:51Speaker 1: Yeah, do you have a vision that you can share
- 50:56Speaker 1: in the future that like You're like, damn, it would
- 50:58Speaker 1: be really cool to see something like this happen.
- 51:02Speaker 3: For the overall for the sport.
- 51:05Speaker 1: And I'm asking the question. I'm like, who knows how
- 51:07Speaker 1: much you can even share?
- 51:08Speaker 2: No, I think what do you got around the corner
- 51:11Speaker 2: for us? Yeah?
- 51:12Speaker 1: Speaking to Yeah, yeah, some blue balls a little bit.
- 51:17Speaker 3: When I look at the sport, I think it's we
- 51:19Speaker 3: still have so many places we could go race and
- 51:21Speaker 3: do some different things and places where not you know,
- 51:25Speaker 3: I want to take races to new markets. You want
- 51:28Speaker 3: to be in New York, want to be in the Northwest,
- 51:30Speaker 3: want to be in England somehow and do some cool
- 51:32Speaker 3: things and then have drivers like get ahead of it.
- 51:35Speaker 3: So ideally, you know, start rotating our championship race. You know,
- 51:39Speaker 3: right now we're going to be in Miami for for
- 51:41Speaker 3: one year, maybe two, but start getting on this cycle
- 51:44Speaker 3: where you know, we're gonna announce our twenty seven schedule
- 51:47Speaker 3: probably in a couple of weeks, right, that's great. I'd
- 51:50Speaker 3: love to be announcing the twenty thirty two schedule so
- 51:52Speaker 3: fans can be like, oh, this is awesome and get
- 51:54Speaker 3: my arms around this. This is how drivers going to
- 51:57Speaker 3: race it, you know, start to get some you know,
- 51:59Speaker 3: appreciation for where we're going. So it's more about where
- 52:01Speaker 3: we're racing. And then the biggest thing is just working
- 52:04Speaker 3: with the drivers to show them, you know, what could
- 52:08Speaker 3: be and if you just step out of your comfort
- 52:10Speaker 3: zone just a little bit, you're gonna make more money,
- 52:13Speaker 3: You're gonna have some more fun hopefully, and just help
- 52:16Speaker 3: us grow the sport. So I think you know, this
- 52:19Speaker 3: comes down a lot of it from me right now
- 52:21Speaker 3: is just communication and it's getting we were all over
- 52:24Speaker 3: the place, and now it's just trying to work together
- 52:26Speaker 3: as a sport and take advantage of what we have.
- 52:29Speaker 3: And we have a cool sport. Man, I've said it right,
- 52:31Speaker 3: We've got a badass American sport. Let's embrace this thing.
- 52:34Speaker 3: Let's take the momentum and let's work together to grow.
- 52:37Speaker 3: And the fans are the fans are there. The fans
- 52:39Speaker 3: want us to succeed, and we just got to get
- 52:42Speaker 3: out of our own way sometimes and deliver a great product.
- 52:45Speaker 1: Our fans out there with a voice wanting you to
- 52:47Speaker 1: be in certain in certain cities, at certain tracks. I
- 52:50Speaker 1: think you're like.
- 52:51Speaker 3: We hear you, we see yeah. I think they want
- 52:54Speaker 3: to balance right, So uh, there's fans who are like,
- 52:56Speaker 3: why are you in a street race in Chicago? Why'd
- 52:58Speaker 3: you go to San Diego? You know, for us seventy
- 53:01Speaker 3: percent fans that they came to those races, I'd never
- 53:04Speaker 3: seen a NASCAR race before, and then they stuck with us.
- 53:06Speaker 3: So it's pretty cool. But we got to balance that.
- 53:09Speaker 3: We got to make sure we don't desert kind of
- 53:10Speaker 3: the markets where you know we race in Darlington, we
- 53:13Speaker 3: racing Talladega, you know, we racing Daytona and the fans
- 53:16Speaker 3: know those brands. So it's keeping your really your core
- 53:19Speaker 3: core racetracks and then expanding out here. And there may
- 53:22Speaker 3: be rotating some races in the future, so you don't
- 53:25Speaker 3: always have to go to a racetrack every single year,
- 53:27Speaker 3: you know, could you put one on a rotation every
- 53:29Speaker 3: two or three years. It's something we might look at
- 53:32Speaker 3: number of races. Who knows where we go in the future,
- 53:35Speaker 3: you know with new media content, do we look at
- 53:37Speaker 3: mid race mid midweek races. So we're all kind of
- 53:40Speaker 3: getting together right now as an industry and sitting down
- 53:43Speaker 3: and saying, all, right, in twenty thirty, what do we
- 53:45Speaker 3: want to look like unless all work together to make
- 53:48Speaker 3: this thing go. And that's drivers, owners, everybody, fans have
- 53:52Speaker 3: an input to put this together and all get on
- 53:54Speaker 3: the same page.
- 53:55Speaker 1: Yeah, it sounds like you need some driver buy into.
- 53:58Speaker 1: We do know the driver is not that there be selfish.
- 54:00Speaker 3: But now whatever we do, right, they got the microphone
- 54:03Speaker 3: and so they all.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Leverage themselves well enough to have kind of their their leverage.
- 54:07Speaker 3: Yeah, we at least got to listen to that. We
- 54:09Speaker 3: got to listen. I think we do a great job
- 54:10Speaker 3: when you compare us to other sports. I mean, I'm
- 54:13Speaker 3: at just about every single race. You know. We see
- 54:16Speaker 3: these guys every single weekend and we talk to them.
- 54:19Speaker 3: I don't think other leagues are doing that right, and
- 54:21Speaker 3: so that's good and bad. We always get the input,
- 54:23Speaker 3: but as long as we're listening. And then what I've
- 54:25Speaker 3: learned is you better if you're going left when they
- 54:28Speaker 3: wanted to go right, you better have a reason why
- 54:30Speaker 3: you did that. Go explain it to them. And then
- 54:32Speaker 3: for the most part, they're okay with that. It's when
- 54:34Speaker 3: you go left and you haven't had the conversation and
- 54:36Speaker 3: you say, I'm not going to listen when when we're
- 54:38Speaker 3: in trouble and so we're we're not doing that with.
- 54:42Speaker 2: The with the drivers, how difficult is it for you
- 54:46Speaker 2: to have these personable relationships with all of them, get
- 54:49Speaker 2: to know them, and then still keep business separate from
- 54:51Speaker 2: all of them and make those decisions.
- 54:52Speaker 3: No, it's hard. So when I was on the competition side,
- 54:55Speaker 3: Kevin Harvick and I I almost say we almost came
- 54:57Speaker 3: to blows. But there was there was one meeting driver
- 55:00Speaker 3: to me that got really heated and he was pissed,
- 55:02Speaker 3: and it was like that was the closest I think
- 55:04Speaker 3: it's ever come to like. But he's a passionate guy.
- 55:07Speaker 3: Saw am. I where my emotions on my sleeve. And
- 55:09Speaker 3: he told me at the end of this, if you
- 55:11Speaker 3: do your job well, you're going to be the most
- 55:13Speaker 3: hated guy in the garage area. And it was tough
- 55:15Speaker 3: to hear because you got to make tough calls, right,
- 55:17Speaker 3: you want to be friends like you want people to
- 55:20Speaker 3: like you. But that's been the biggest lesson for me
- 55:22Speaker 3: is you know you're not gonna be everybody's friend just
- 55:25Speaker 3: because you got to make tough calls. You got to
- 55:27Speaker 3: call someone up and say, hey, we're fineing you. That's
- 55:30Speaker 3: part of the job. You don't want to do it,
- 55:31Speaker 3: but you know you're the government, right, you got to
- 55:33Speaker 3: do some of these things. So the drivers, for the
- 55:36Speaker 3: most part, all I can hope for is is some
- 55:38Speaker 3: level or respect right that that they're not always going
- 55:40Speaker 3: to agree with me or where we're going, but at
- 55:42Speaker 3: least there's that open door to have the conversation. Is
- 55:45Speaker 3: that that's kind of how I try and go about things.
- 55:48Speaker 1: Guys, listen up, we need to talk about something very serious.
- 55:53Speaker 1: Oh no breakfast okay, actually, yes, very serious. Because for
- 55:57Speaker 1: too long, breakfast has been either nothing but coffee, which
- 56:02Speaker 1: is a crime, or a full production chopping, prepping, cooking, cleaning,
- 56:06Speaker 1: and by the time you're done, it's basically lunch exactly.
- 56:10Speaker 1: And that's why we are fired to have to announce
- 56:12Speaker 1: that Kevin's Natural Foods Now has breakfast. Kevin's for breakfast.
- 56:18Speaker 1: You guys already know we love Kevin's for lunch and dinner,
- 56:20Speaker 1: and now that we get to officially add breakfast to
- 56:23Speaker 1: the morning routine with their scrambler starters, which means you
- 56:27Speaker 1: can now eat Kevins all day, every day. That's a
- 56:30Speaker 1: complete system. That's a winning game plan. Kevin's scramble starters
- 56:34Speaker 1: are legit. They're made with tender protein, criss vegetables, and
- 56:37Speaker 1: a creamy sauce with insanely good flavors like Denver style
- 56:41Speaker 1: ham and white cheddar and spinach and bacon florentine. Just
- 56:45Speaker 1: add eggs for a delicious scramble in minutes. Plus. They're
- 56:48Speaker 1: made with real ingredients, no added sugars, gluten free, soy free,
- 56:53Speaker 1: and no mystery meat, just high quality protein. You got
- 56:56Speaker 1: that right. You just take the scramble starter out of
- 56:59Speaker 1: the free throw it in a pan, add your eggs,
- 57:02Speaker 1: drizzling the sauce, and in about fifteen minutes, you've got
- 57:04Speaker 1: a real breakfast that's better than anything you've ordered at
- 57:07Speaker 1: a restaurant, but without waiting forty five minutes for a table.
- 57:10Speaker 1: So yes, Kevin's at your Foods has breakfast now. Find
- 57:13Speaker 1: Kevin's Scrambler Starters in the frozen isle at Target, Kroger, Harris,
- 57:17Speaker 1: Tater Giant, and Hannaford stores. Kevin's for breakfast morning's just
- 57:22Speaker 1: got a major upgrade.
- 57:26Speaker 2: Yeah, he said. When I was reading on your notes
- 57:28Speaker 2: on everything of being a CEO, how you've kind of
- 57:30Speaker 2: like it seems like you've completely shied away from like
- 57:33Speaker 2: the typical corporate CEO. Was that a conscious decision that
- 57:36Speaker 2: you made or was it just kind of the upbringing
- 57:38Speaker 2: of where you started and how you got to where
- 57:39Speaker 2: you're at.
- 57:39Speaker 3: I think it's just who I am. And you talked about,
- 57:42Speaker 3: you know, did you ever aspire to be a CEO?
- 57:44Speaker 1: No?
- 57:45Speaker 3: You know, I always wanted to do well for myself, righte.
- 57:47Speaker 3: But my parents were educators, you know, grew up you know,
- 57:51Speaker 3: and and just feel like I want to treat people
- 57:54Speaker 3: a certain way and and you know, everybody counts in
- 57:57Speaker 3: our business. You know, there's there's guys who are driving
- 58:00Speaker 3: the trucks teaching every race. If they don't show up,
- 58:02Speaker 3: we're not racing. You know, when you look down from
- 58:04Speaker 3: race control before the race, the guy who's just as
- 58:07Speaker 3: important to put on races is locking the fence and
- 58:10Speaker 3: making sure it's secure. Right. If he doesn't do his job,
- 58:12Speaker 3: god knows what can happen, and so all those people matter,
- 58:16Speaker 3: And I think, to me, it's having relationships. Listening to
- 58:19Speaker 3: all those folks. You know, you got to deal with
- 58:21Speaker 3: different folks and you got to move around, you know,
- 58:23Speaker 3: some of the sponsors and CEOs, which is part of
- 58:25Speaker 3: the role. I enjoy learning from them. But to me,
- 58:27Speaker 3: it's just being accessible, being available. I'm not always gonna
- 58:32Speaker 3: you know, and and being willing to make mistakes and
- 58:34Speaker 3: admit it. You know, I know that I'm not perfect,
- 58:37Speaker 3: but get good people around you and try some new things,
- 58:40Speaker 3: take some risks, but you know, just try and put
- 58:43Speaker 3: the sport in a better place than when when I started.
- 58:46Speaker 2: What did a young Steve want to be growing up?
- 58:48Speaker 3: Man? That's great question. Probably, yeah, I probably I probably
- 58:54Speaker 3: saw myself playing for the Yankees. You know, my grandfather's
- 58:58Speaker 3: out there throwing bah. Yeah. So I so it's funny.
- 59:01Speaker 3: I grew up playing baseball and then my dad got
- 59:04Speaker 3: a job overseas, so he's principal of an international school.
- 59:07Speaker 3: We moved to Egypt. Baseball is not too big in Egypt,
- 59:10Speaker 3: so we started a league there and we ended up
- 59:14Speaker 3: playing in the Big League World Series representing Africa and Europe, like,
- 59:19Speaker 3: and it was crazy because we showed up in Miami
- 59:21Speaker 3: and all the media was like, do you guys ride camels?
- 59:24Speaker 3: You know, and we're we're all Americans like it, But
- 59:27Speaker 3: it was it was weird playing that, so I still
- 59:28Speaker 3: thought I had a shot. And then we played like,
- 59:31Speaker 3: you know, USA East Venezuela. I think we lost like
- 59:34Speaker 3: twenty forty two. I was like, all right, all right,
- 59:36Speaker 3: my times, my time's over here. But I still love
- 59:39Speaker 3: the game. I just I'm a big sports fan. I
- 59:41Speaker 3: love all kinds of sports.
- 59:42Speaker 1: Yeah, that was Egypt. I'm just trying to envision. The
- 59:43Speaker 1: only picture I have in my head of him playing
- 59:45Speaker 1: baseball in Egypt is pyramids in the background.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Yeah somewhere, just to start here, do you think those
- 59:53Speaker 2: pyramids were built by man or by aliens.
- 59:56Speaker 1: It's a great question.
- 59:58Speaker 3: I did. So my graduation high school photos, we're all
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: sitting on the pyramids. Yeah, it was.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: It was wild your graduation photos.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: You guys just chilling on the pyramids. Yeah, you're not
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: thinking about the movie The Mummy at all.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: No, I don't know what I was thinking. So it
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: probably had a few beers in it. There was no
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: drinking age either in Egypt, so it was a.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Good, nice experience.
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it was. It was good. So I came when
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: I got to college at Rollinson in Florida, I was like,
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: what do you mean, Like, what are we doing here? Yeah,
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: it's a little bizarre, but now.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Egypt was kind of bragging about how you could drink.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: Yeah, it was like what happened here? But it was great.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: I loved it because you got to travel around the world.
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: Like so for here, you know, if you're going to
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: you're playing football, basketball, baseball, you go to a state
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: tournament right for there, if you're playing basketball, you're going
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: to Europe and all the international schools are meeting. So
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: you know, it was cool. We have the same high
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: school that Steve Kerr actually went to. You know, you
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: got you got some some people who you met along
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: the way, you know, playing and visit in different countries.
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: So it was a good time. It's a good time.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: So let me ask you this. Do you think the
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Pyramids were made by man and by.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: I'm gonna go I'm still gonna go man, But I
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: don't get it. I still don't get it.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty insane.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: It's pretty insane. Yeah, when you see it, you're like,
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: I don't get it. Yeah.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I haven't done it. I haven't done a deep
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: dive enough. Ye, just surface level.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: I feel like the Aliens, there's something, there's something I
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: don't impossible.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: And I'll buy in anything, and I'm going to buy
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: into the idea that that's extraterrestrial.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I just think, yeah, it does seem a little
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: too impossible going to go aliens.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, that's fair.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: I have no good basis or points on that. That's whatsoever.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: I love that.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Listen to a couple of Joe Rogan pods.
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: It is.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: Something over there going on. Where else did you live?
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: You lived in Egypt?
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: Yeah, so I lived in a Jersey, born in Jersey,
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: lived in Massachusetts for six years Egypt, and then I've
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: been in Florida for thirty five forty years, but spend
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: a lot of time in Florida and in North Carolina,
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: so I'm back and forth.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: How many days are you on the road during the
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: NASCAR season?
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: Ah, man, I'd say too many, least half two more. Yeah,
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: so I kind of split time between Florida and Charlotte
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: offices and then going to the races also, so trying
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: to get to as many as I can.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: What do you give an embarrassing punk fact about you?
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: Oh yeah, embarrassing fun fact about me.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Yeah, just to break the ice, I went the bed
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: till strongly, you knoweens.
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: You know, I might have to go with that till
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: what age Probably about fourteen is.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: When they blast.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: But I think there was one about a few months ago, right,
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: we had a little dribble.
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's fair, that's fair.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: I did I have feed the bed twice at the
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: age of thirty six. But new researchers came out. I
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: have a system my brain that could be playing. It's benign,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: nothing scary.
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: No, I'd probably go with that till about Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: I was a little older than I should have been. Still,
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: yeah you were bed Yeah, yeah, how old I really
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: looked back into that, but old enough not to be
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: doing it.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: I remember when I need an age. You can't just
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: say old enough. You could say eight or nine, and
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: I'm like, all.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: Right, yeah, no, I think it was eight or nine. Yeah, well, yeah,
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: I think it was eight or nine because it was
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: it was Massachusetts, so that's when. Yeah, yeah, so eight
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: or nine.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: Did you when you were an adult at all? No? Man,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: like I might have one a year.
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: No, that doesn't happen. Man, I can handle my drinks.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: And I know Doc would say no. Cool laid up
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: to seven and it shook me.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: What it is the off season? What do you like
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: to do to enjoy yourself.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: I'm a big traveler. Even though I travel all the time.
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: I like family, like we usually do one big trip trying,
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: you know, a year, see someplace new, or go out
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: and just have some fun. So it's become a thing
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: where my kids I'll look forward to it, like, hey,
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: we're all going to be together for at least a
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: week or ten days. So I went to New Zealand, Australia,
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: South Africa, so just kind of checking things out and
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: having some fun along the way.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: What's been your favorite I hear a lot of good
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: things about South Africa.
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: South Africa was awesome. I would say, yeah, you gotta go,
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: you gotta go if you've never been. When the kids
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: are of age, take them on Asfari. It's just the
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: coolest thing going. Man, It's fun. The people are great.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: And then I would say, I mean, I love Europe.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: New Zealand is I'd live there, man. It's just beautiful
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: man because no one. You got all these cool outdoor
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: places and no one's there so you can just do
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: whatever he wants. Great, but it's my favorite still Ireland.
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: You know, grew up Irish, so still love going to
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: the pub and having a pint and maybe playing a
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: little golf every once in a while. The boys, yeah
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: with the locals. Yeah yeah lads. McGregor guy, I was
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: last week, no up until this past week. So what
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: I loved about McGregor was just what a personality talk
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: shit and and his press conferences to me were a
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: must watch. Right, loved loved what he did, loved the
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: personality brought and something for us. And I don't know
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: how to balance this, right, but we've looked at you know,
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: we're't a dangerous sport, right, these guys are out there,
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: you know, three wide, two hundred miles an hour, and
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: it's a balance of family and then racing, right, and
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: the difference in UFC. You know when our kids are
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: when our drivers are going to driver intros, you know
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: they're with their kids, right, and it's hard to kind
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: of show that. You know, these guys are then going
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: to get in a car and go two hundred miles
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: an hour.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: It's like the switch.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: How do they do it right versus McGregor coming in
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: with the music and you know, the tattoos. You know,
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: it's a whole image, and so we're trying to steal
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: a little bit from them on how they do it
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: in the atmosphere. But yeah, this last fight that was
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: that was awful, but it was it was just not
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: good man.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it was just hard watching him walk out.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: I was just getting it.
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: Didn't look at Yeah, that's right. He didn't look the same.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: He was.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: Will was on a family trip and it he was
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: all over the world. Man, he was traveling everywhere. But
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: the goal was he was going to land in Nashville
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: around six, get on a plane immediately and come to
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: v And it just didn't ended up just not working out.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: He wouldn't have made it anyway because you had a
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: delay or something like that. But these fights come up.
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: We're with the early prelims, were watching all of them
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: go down, and when he started to walk out, the
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: music starts or yeah, goose racing. Holloway looks loose and
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: ready to go, and then he comes on the big screen,
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: the crowded ups and I get excited. I'm looking at
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: him like, this is not mentally here right now. No,
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: it just didn't feel like he was he was.
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: I went to uh the McGregor Diaz fight years ago
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: in Vegas sixteen.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I was there. It was the first year of.
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: Weavable atmosphere, right and just crazy. Yeah, and I was like,
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: how do we repeat that? Yeah, it was unreal, but yeah,
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: it didn't look didn't look like the same guy. Yeah.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: You ever thought about like if there's like five drivers
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: that in this new this new playoff layout, five drivers
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: they could all they could all win. I'm trying to
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: think of the press conference and you just have a
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: little press or where it's just the individuals who might
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: win it.
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: Just get them in there, get them here, yep. And
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: talking about like, yeah, I remember with McGregor. Who the
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: f is that guy? It's one of the greatest lines going, right,
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: So I think that would be cool. And I think
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: we're getting back to that with the drivers. So when
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: you talk about, you know, back in the day, the rivalries,
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: we would do some of those things. We had the
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: at the time, the chase, and we had all those
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: guys up there, So I do think that's something we
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: could do.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Yeah, imagine just him sitting at the podium taking questions.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: Big a line of NASCAR fans. They're able to ask
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: these drivers.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: Or if they're a little reserved. Again, yeah, we could
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: still say no, but we wouldn't have you.
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: Guys, there's absolutely little little money. Yeah, yeah, yeah, and
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: we'll see it up. That's fantastic like that when he
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: said this about you, that's that's awesome.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: I can't I can't wait for the day we have
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: hosts of bar and we can just play.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Back all the No.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: Man, And I'm not taking it personal yet, but it's
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: getting that. I'm getting close.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: I'm getting close to it because he's turned us down
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: a couple of times. I believe I.
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: Think he said not it's not a good time for him. Guys,
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: focus on driving. Yeah, focused on driving still my favorite.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: I seem going to the s piece and other stuffing
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: in the Nashville real.
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: Yeah, bigger than the Yes. Absolutely, What do we talk
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: was pretty more. Yeah.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: I saw a couple of clips and I was like, yeah, bitch,
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: you got any questions you're you're a NASCAR guy.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: I don't.
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: I don't know, necessarily have a questions more of a statement.
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: I worked at NASCAR back in twenty twenty two, and uh,
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: back then it just kind of felt more corporate yep.
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: And then this year with like the kind of the
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: the slogan for like hell yeah, and like you're saying,
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: it's like an America, like the badass American sport. I
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: just and like hearing everything you just said, it's like,
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: I'm super excited for where the sport's going.
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: And obviously it's a lot to do with you. So
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: I just want to say I'm super excited. I appreciate it.
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: That's good to hear. And that's because I think we've
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: got to be proud of who we are. Right we
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: were trying to be somebody we're not and got us
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: in trouble. So I think, you know, embracing who you
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: got racing. You know, there's there's gonna be some challenges
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: as we go along, but just you know, I said,
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: this sounds really nut, but bringing some fun back.
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: I mean the garage area during that time, right was
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: it was miserable. I mean people were coming in the garage,
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: everyone went their own way. And now you're seeing people excited.
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: You know, it's a grind, it's a long season, but
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: I think people are excited each and every race we
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: go to and just have some fun. Man, we're in
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: a pretty We're pretty privileged to be able to do
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: what we do. And you know, if the fans don't
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: see you having fun, why would they want to watch? Right,
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: And it's it's big time sports. I get that, but
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: you got to invite them in to, you know, have
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: a little relief from what they deal with each and
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: every day.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: What was the one or two things that made it
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: so miserable When you're thinking back at the time and
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: you're like, man, it just felt miserable.
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: I think you know, we were going through a time
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: when we were chasing a lot, sponsorship was down on,
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: our ratings, weren't doing great, So everybody's kind of pointing
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: fingers there wasn't a ton of direction. And I think
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: now when you look at the sport, everybody's rallied around,
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: like we have a big opportunity now in the next
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: three to four years to kind of come together. You know,
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: right now, i'd say, you know, we're nice to have sport.
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: You know, when you look at networks and everything, we're
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: not a must have. And you know that's the goal, man.
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: We want to be a must have sport. That if
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: you're any one of these networks, any one of these
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: you know, digital streaming, you better have NASCAR because that's
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: where eyeballs are going to be. And we got to
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: put ourselves in a position to do that. And I
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: think we're on our way. I think people are coming,
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: people are experiencing the sport, so you know, more of
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: that we can do. We can get away from you know,
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: where we were in the past and and truly get
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: back to those you know, when I started, we were
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: literally chasing IndyCar, and we said, if we can just
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: be bigger than IndyCar, this will this will be unbelievable.
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: You know. Now, you know, I want to look at
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: I want to be the fastest growing sport in the
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: world and we got some work to do to do that,
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: but we got to rally around that and go.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: So have we seen this start to do?
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: Yeah, the tendance is up, ratings are up. But the
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: biggest thing for us, Taylor, we're seeing as young people.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: So we used to be, you know, the king of
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: the fifty five year old demo, right, and that's growing
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: and the young we were struggling. And now with Amazon,
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: Fox everybody, we're seeing that younger demo grow, which is
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: big for us. Now we got to keep them though.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: It's it's our job to like, all right, you know,
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: people are coming in sampling it, you know, don't just
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: go to one race and that was cool. You know,
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: how do we keep them going and keep them interested?
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: And you guys talked about man, more stories, more content,
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: more stuff that they get involved in. That's you know,
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: we're just scratching the surface of storylines. Yeah. Absolutely, everything
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: you guys having you know, you guys paying attention to
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: sports huge for us. I mean that's you know, we
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: appreciate that and uh, that's going to help us grow.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: Dude, we appreciate you allowing us into the world. Minute.
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: What I said at the begining of the show, like
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: going to Nashville, we felt I mean I felt like royalty.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: Everyone was like, hey, thanking, I'm thinking of myself. No, no, no,
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: this is we appreciate you just allowing us to be
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: a part of it.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: Man.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: With the access. It all comes back to if these
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: fans can just go to race, yes, they will understand
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: what NASCAR is all about, because it is. It's badass.
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: Ye.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: We need to get these pit crew guys, we need
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: to have more on them.
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: I agree with that. Yeah, having some of them guessed.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: Those dudes too, the way they're hanging out. Like I've
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: said the suit so many times when we're at the race.
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: A couple of guys they brought me over and like
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: showing me the cameras of like them literally watching film.
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: And every single stop now like they're.
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: Joking around and messing. Then as soon as a caution
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: comes up or they're getting ready to do a pit
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: it's like they completely switch. It's like oh ship, yeah, yeah, badass.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: A couple of guys, pretty performative, then washed a little bit,
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: but it's awesome. I'm all about it. I'm all in
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: on it.
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: Yeah. To your point too, just all the access, like
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: it's not just like you're thinking, we're going to go
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: around and have some uh this VIP experience that's separate
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: from everything else now because your guys is hosting us.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: Was unbelievable, but all the it felt like everybody's involved
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: in everything that is happening and going on.
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: We got to be the easiest sport to want to
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: come and be a part of, and we got to
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: be a sport that it's not something you have to do,
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: that that you want to do. So we're getting there.
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: So it's good to hear.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: This has been awesome, Jack, Do you have anything anything
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: off top?
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: Okay, idea, We've had some good ideas, all righty good.
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: Jack, producer of our show.
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: We got the CEO growing the game, you know, talking
- 1:12:19Speaker 6: about that and getting kids involved more. The idea is
- 1:12:22Speaker 6: like a Hendrix or you know, every every every team
- 1:12:26Speaker 6: doing like a camp for kids, you know, grow the game,
- 1:12:28Speaker 6: get the guys out there and uh, you know going
- 1:12:32Speaker 6: that way.
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: So Jack, that's the Jack, do you have a contract here?
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: Can we I'm kind of everywhere for debate. It's an
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: awesome idea. So one of the things we're looking at
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: and and kind of put this out there too. So
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: the So the team brands, right, the teams don't have
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: you ask who the Yankees? Right, People are like there's
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: Hendrick Motorsports, there's Joe Gibbs Racing, and those brands aren't
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: big as well. And I think we want to look
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: to grow those also with the drivers, so that people
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: know that if a driver comes in for a year
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: and he's gone, you know, what's the culture? What is
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: what is Hendrick Motorsports all about?
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: What do they stand for? What's roush Racing all about?
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: What do they stand for? So doing a better story
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: but the camps would be huge. I think that's a
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: great idea. I mean another sport there's yeah, that's that's fantastic.
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: Carts and work your way up. I love it. We
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: got a bunch of good ideas out of this brainstorm.
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: This is good man, absolutely.
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: And the question is do you always travel with the
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: mariachi band or is that just a thing I do?
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: So I told Jen I'm not coming unless I have
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: some intro music. I chose mariachi today. I didn't know
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: it was your birthday, so I didn't want to. I
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: did not want to get in front of you, but
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: you know, I got to have.
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: My You know, I all have many days in this life.
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: I appreciate you guys letting that happen too.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: Yeah, that was just ten out of ten.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: Man, this spot, I feel like I can just Steve
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: can go in and be like, hey, guys, we're just
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: gonna we're gonna watch this podcast today. Yeah, and then
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: let me see, let me hear your takeaways.
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: Let's see what we got board. Yeah, most of the family,
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: white guys. It's the owners, so yeah, yeah, just kidding.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: They're going to hear the part of like cap and
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: everything else.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't want to cap you to start funding
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: these kids that you used to get exactly exactly we're
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: brand up, Yeah, your brand into a billion dollar.
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: Company and then everything goes Yeah, they're going to get a.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: Good idea, feel good man, So yeah, we'll invoice you
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: for the ideas.
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: Thank you, I appreciation and thanks again for the time.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: Thank you people around a pause. Man, have an incredible time.
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: Great to have you on race with the boys and

- 1:14:36Speaker 1: NASCAR is all happy that baseball did not work out,
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: so that way you could be sitting in the seat.
