- 1:47Speaker 1: to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too. This
- 1:51Speaker 1: is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome to
- 1:54Speaker 1: Disgraceland the after Bernie, Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode.
- 2:13Speaker 1: A little thing we like to call the after party.
- 2:16Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 2:18Speaker 1: the party. The bridge to get you from one full
- 2:20Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 2:24Speaker 1: into the dirt on this episode, we are talking, among
- 2:27Speaker 1: other things, about our new full episode on Mariah Carey,
- 2:31Speaker 1: a little bit on this week's rewind episode on Derek
- 2:33Speaker 1: and the Dominoes, and of course your voicemails, text, dms
- 2:37Speaker 1: and more, and is always a whole lot of rosie.
- 2:40Speaker 1: All right, just goes, let's get it here it all right?
- 2:54Speaker 1: This week in Disgraceland, we are coming upon Christmas. We
- 2:58Speaker 1: are here in the holiday see, and as such, we
- 3:01Speaker 1: have a brand new episode on Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey
- 3:05Speaker 1: in Disgraceland. Who would have thunk, Well, certainly not that
- 3:09Speaker 1: dude on Instagram who's always hitting me up to do
- 3:11Speaker 1: a replacements episode and is very pissed off that we
- 3:14Speaker 1: cover Mariah Carey before the replacements. And I gotta say,
- 3:16Speaker 1: I don't blame them. I don't blame them one bit.
- 3:19Speaker 1: But I wanted to do this Mariah Carey episode because
- 3:22Speaker 1: she is ubiquitous this time of year, and I wanted
- 3:25Speaker 1: to dig into her story because I knew it was
- 3:27Speaker 1: filled with drama, and I knew it would give me
- 3:30Speaker 1: an excuse to talk about her massive hit. All I
- 3:33Speaker 1: want for Christmas is you More on that later. But
- 3:36Speaker 1: here's the deal. With this one. We plan our release
- 3:38Speaker 1: schedule way out in advance. Okay, We've we got like
- 3:43Speaker 1: nine ten people who work on every episode, and as
- 3:46Speaker 1: you know, we're hammering out the content. And Matt Boden
- 3:49Speaker 1: here at Team Double Elvis has this sort of beautiful
- 3:54Speaker 1: mind schedule, a production schedule that lays everything out but
- 3:59Speaker 1: for all of us to work on. We're all working
- 4:01Speaker 1: on different parts of different episodes at different times. The
- 4:04Speaker 1: key to this, however, is planning, and we have to
- 4:06Speaker 1: plan way far in advance. I mentioned this when we
- 4:10Speaker 1: did the Ditty episode. And we try to tell stories
- 4:13Speaker 1: sometimes at dovetail nicely with different times of the year. Halloween,
- 4:16Speaker 1: you may recall the Misfits episode, or April Fool's Day,
- 4:20Speaker 1: you know, Jim Morrison, John Denver, Thanksgiving. We're working on
- 4:24Speaker 1: a good Thanksgiving episode already, or at least we're thinking
- 4:26Speaker 1: about it for next year. I know what we're going
- 4:28Speaker 1: to do. When you think about musicians and singers and
- 4:31Speaker 1: you think about Christmas, I don't know how in the
- 4:34Speaker 1: modern world you can't think about Mariah Carey and her
- 4:37Speaker 1: ubiquitous holiday anthem. All I want for Christmas is you,
- 4:41Speaker 1: which continues to charge and do big business twenty nine
- 4:46Speaker 1: years after its original release. Now you can say what
- 4:50Speaker 1: you want about this song. And I don't particularly love
- 4:53Speaker 1: this song. I've kind of grown to accept it in
- 4:56Speaker 1: my life. But there's one thing that we didn't upon
- 5:00Speaker 1: in the episode. And then I talked about this. I
- 5:03Speaker 1: did a little video on Instagram and TikTok about this
- 5:06Speaker 1: episode and about how much money it makes for Mariah,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and I didn't talk about it there either. In case
- 5:12Speaker 1: you're wondering, go to a disgrace landpod on Instagram. You'll
- 5:16Speaker 1: get the whole context. But basically, all I'm want for
- 5:18Speaker 1: Christmas is you. The single pulls in a cool three
- 5:21Speaker 1: million every December for Mariah Carey. Not bad stocking change.
- 5:27Speaker 1: But the one thing, to my point, the one thing
- 5:30Speaker 1: that we haven't yet discussed is Okay, this song came
- 5:34Speaker 1: out twenty nine years ago. What's that put it at
- 5:36Speaker 1: like ninety four something like that. I think it was released,
- 5:41Speaker 1: and we have not talked about how timeless this song is.
- 5:46Speaker 1: It sounds timeless, you cannot place it. Was it written
- 5:51Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety four? Was it written in two thousand
- 5:53Speaker 1: and four, twenty twenty four, nineteen eighty four, Okay, it
- 5:56Speaker 1: sounds a little more modern, I guess, I guess, I
- 5:58Speaker 1: don't know. Maybe it could pass eighty four. It's definitely
- 6:01Speaker 1: of the modern world, but it is timeless, and I
- 6:04Speaker 1: think that pop stars, pop songwriters strive for a certain
- 6:08Speaker 1: amount of timelessness in their songs and in the records
- 6:13Speaker 1: they produce, and that is most certainly part of the
- 6:16Speaker 1: appeal here with All I Want for Christmas is You.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Plus Mariah Carey has kind of leaned into it. She's
- 6:20Speaker 1: kind of become the you know, the Christmas princess in
- 6:23Speaker 1: a way, and that's cool. Good for her. But I
- 6:27Speaker 1: can just even if I don't appreciate, even if I'm
- 6:30Speaker 1: not reaching, you know, for the search bar on Spotify
- 6:34Speaker 1: and banging in Mariah carry All I Want for Christmas
- 6:37Speaker 1: for You, I can still appreciate the craftsmanship of the song,
- 6:41Speaker 1: the production, the songwriting, and what it's actually done and
- 6:46Speaker 1: how it was able to achieve this massive success. Even
- 6:50Speaker 1: if you don't like it, and even if, like me,
- 6:53Speaker 1: hadn't I haven't liked it at times, you can't argue
- 6:56Speaker 1: with the results. You can't argue with the market, as
- 6:58Speaker 1: they say, people want this song. It's the biggest selling
- 7:03Speaker 1: Christmas song of all time beat that Bing Crosby. Speaking
- 7:06Speaker 1: of Bing Crosby, we also hit on some Bing Crosby stories,
- 7:09Speaker 1: some David Bowie bing Crosby stories over on Instagram. And
- 7:14Speaker 1: you know, if Mariah Carey ain't your thing, I get it.
- 7:17Speaker 1: You know, we get into the darkness here in the
- 7:19Speaker 1: episode with Tommy Mottola and her relationship with him and
- 7:22Speaker 1: just how bad shit that whole thing was and everything
- 7:24Speaker 1: that went down there, and it's ultimately the light here
- 7:27Speaker 1: is ultimately a story of resilience. Mariah Carrey a survivor
- 7:31Speaker 1: who goes beyond this incredibly. I don't even know. I
- 7:37Speaker 1: can't find the right adjective here to describe how fucked
- 7:40Speaker 1: up this relationship was with her boss, who was also
- 7:43Speaker 1: her husband. She persevered, and I love those stories. But
- 7:47Speaker 1: if this ain't your thing, I get it. So over
- 7:50Speaker 1: at disgracelandpod, on Instagram and on TikTok and probably on
- 7:54Speaker 1: X as well. I'm done qualifying X by the way
- 7:57Speaker 1: and saying that it used to be known as Twitter.
- 7:59Speaker 1: It's X Okay. From now on, it's X and over
- 8:01Speaker 1: on X as well. I'm going to be releasing these
- 8:05Speaker 1: daily little stories, little Christmas related music or iconic sort
- 8:11Speaker 1: of dark stories. Okay, to fill in the gaps here
- 8:14Speaker 1: between Mariah Carey and whatever we're doing on the other
- 8:18Speaker 1: side of the year with new content. I can't even
- 8:19Speaker 1: remember the next new episode we're doing, but it's coming,
- 8:22Speaker 1: all right, So is Mariah Carey? Is all I want
- 8:25Speaker 1: for Christmas?
- 8:25Speaker 2: For you?
- 8:26Speaker 1: Sentimental cheese? You bet? Absolutely? Are we allowed to enjoy
- 8:30Speaker 1: sentimental Christmas cheese every year? Sure thing? Why not? That's
- 8:34Speaker 1: part of what Christmas is all about being sentimental, isn't it.
- 8:38Speaker 1: You know, there's nothing wrong with being sentimental from time
- 8:40Speaker 1: to time. And I get a story for that as well.
- 8:43Speaker 1: That's going to hit soon, very soon on an in
- 8:46Speaker 1: short form and video on Instagram. You'll see that. But anyways,
- 8:49Speaker 1: this has, like I said, surveillance, armed guards, sabotage, and again,
- 8:54Speaker 1: like I said, resilience, the resilience of one of the
- 8:56Speaker 1: season's most enduring voices, Mariah Carey. So if you have
- 9:00Speaker 1: not heard it, check it out now. If you want darkness,
- 9:03Speaker 1: we got darkness. We got ultra darkness teed up for
- 9:06Speaker 1: you tomorrow in your feed, in the form of our
- 9:09Speaker 1: Derek and the Dominoes, eric Clapton's former band. The episode
- 9:14Speaker 1: we did on Derek and the Dominoes and their drummer
- 9:17Speaker 1: Jim Gordon, and just yeah, it's Christmas, It's madness. It's
- 9:24Speaker 1: a descent into madness and involves a hammer, a butcher knife,
- 9:28Speaker 1: and some dead family members. And that's all I'm going
- 9:31Speaker 1: to say there, but check it out. The score is beautiful.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Matt Boden crushed the mix on this one. I'm pretty
- 9:38Speaker 1: sure he did the music as well. He killed it
- 9:41Speaker 1: all right, So to recap, that's Mariah Carey plus a
- 9:44Speaker 1: rewind on Derek in the Dominoes, all in your disgrace
- 9:47Speaker 1: sland feed this week, I have been super active lately
- 9:52Speaker 1: over on Instagram and TikTok, but you know, mainly Instagram first,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and I've been doing these little videos almost daily, trying
- 10:01Speaker 1: to get into these interesting, sort of holy shit moments
- 10:07Speaker 1: that are either in our episodes or adjacent to our episodes.
- 10:10Speaker 1: You know, the amount of money that Mariah Carey makes
- 10:12Speaker 1: for this song, that's an interesting thing. We didn't actually
- 10:14Speaker 1: hit on that in the episode the beef between Sting
- 10:18Speaker 1: and Diddy, you know, because we did this ditty episode
- 10:21Speaker 1: over the royalties and lots of back and forth about that.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I talked a little bit about in one of the videos,
- 10:27Speaker 1: the Jane's Addiction Dave Navarro story of Conne Navarro or
- 10:32Speaker 1: her murder, and that video is up over four hundred
- 10:37Speaker 1: thousand views at this point, and that I mean a
- 10:40Speaker 1: lot of them. The Diddy Sting video is over one
- 10:42Speaker 1: hundred thousand, you know, and we don't have that many followers,
- 10:45Speaker 1: but we're growing and growing fast now because of this,
- 10:48Speaker 1: so I'm gonna keep doing it. It's occurred to me
- 10:50Speaker 1: over the last two weeks and releasing these videos that
- 10:53Speaker 1: this is part of what you guys want. You guys
- 10:55Speaker 1: want these incredibly just I call them holy shit moments,
- 11:00Speaker 1: holy shit learning moments, just the stuff I come across
- 11:03Speaker 1: constantly when I'm researching these these subjects, and I try
- 11:08Speaker 1: to jam as many of them as I can into
- 11:10Speaker 1: the episodes, but oftentimes I can't be eucet. You know, we
- 11:13Speaker 1: do have a story to tell, and I'm just gonna
- 11:16Speaker 1: do more of it. The other thing I found that
- 11:18Speaker 1: that you guys really appreciate and really like. We released
- 11:20Speaker 1: that in excess episode and you know, the last sort
- 11:24Speaker 1: of five minutes of the episode are really a tribute
- 11:27Speaker 1: to Michael Hutchinson ascend Off, and I'm trying to figure
- 11:31Speaker 1: out a way to do that, not just in the episodes,
- 11:33Speaker 1: but do it elsewhere. Create content for you guys that's
- 11:37Speaker 1: based on these musicians and these icons. The pace tribute
- 11:40Speaker 1: to them in a way. And it really got me
- 11:43Speaker 1: thinking about how, you know, in these episodes they're dark, right,
- 11:47Speaker 1: we talk about this all the time, and they're dark stories,
- 11:50Speaker 1: but there's always light in almost all of them. There's
- 11:53Speaker 1: always always light, all right. Maybe not the Dirk and
- 11:55Speaker 1: the Dominoes one, but there's always light that I seek
- 11:59Speaker 1: out as a writer, a researcher, storyteller, and I feel
- 12:04Speaker 1: like that's part of what we do. I feel like
- 12:06Speaker 1: that's what keeps you guys, part of what keeps you
- 12:08Speaker 1: guys coming back. If I'm wrong, let me know six one, seven,
- 12:11Speaker 1: nine oh six sixty six three eight, voicemail or text.
- 12:16Speaker 1: I went long in this segment, so I'm gonna take
- 12:18Speaker 1: a quick break back on the other side with some
- 12:20Speaker 1: responses to your emails, to your text, to your voicemails.
- 12:46Speaker 1: All Right, we are back, and if you're listening to this,
- 12:49Speaker 1: you're new here. You're you're a new Disgrace Slam listener.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I gotta say I should have said this at the top.
- 12:55Speaker 1: This is a bonus episode. This isn't the real thing. Okay,
- 12:57Speaker 1: this is sort of the shirt after the shirt. This
- 13:00Speaker 1: is we're coming down after the full episode, the real episode,
- 13:03Speaker 1: the scripted, scored sound design, Edge of your Seat immersive
- 13:10Speaker 1: storytelling episode. We do those on Tuesdays. We do these
- 13:14Speaker 1: bonus episodes on Thursdays. The full episodes are the full episodes.
- 13:18Speaker 1: We call these the after parties. Pretty easy to understand.
- 13:21Speaker 1: So if you're new, and I know we have a
- 13:23Speaker 1: lot of new listeners over the last few weeks, I
- 13:25Speaker 1: appreciate you. I'm very stoked that you hear. Just giving
- 13:27Speaker 1: you a little lay of the land. Get an email
- 13:29Speaker 1: here from a new listener. This one from David Warden right,
- 13:33Speaker 1: sand Hey, Jake, I recommend you do a podcast on
- 13:36Speaker 1: Daryl or Phil from Pantera. Should be very polarized and
- 13:39Speaker 1: giving the Panteras back in the news and on the road,
- 13:42Speaker 1: and Daryl was shot to death on stage. I'm gonna
- 13:44Speaker 1: cut you off right there. David. We did do an
- 13:47Speaker 1: episode on Pantera, most specifically on Dinmbag darryl Abbit, So
- 13:53Speaker 1: check that out. You can find that in the Disgraced
- 13:55Speaker 1: Land archive. It's there, It's ready for you. You're gonna
- 13:58Speaker 1: love it. We don't touch on Phil that much because,
- 14:00Speaker 1: like you said, yeah, polarizing, and you know, maybe at
- 14:05Speaker 1: another time, but if you want your fill of the
- 14:06Speaker 1: Abbot Brothers, you're going to get him in this Pantera
- 14:08Speaker 1: episode that we did. Another email here from longtime listener Benedetto.
- 14:14Speaker 1: If I'm saying this wrong, I apologize, but I recognized
- 14:16Speaker 1: this dude's name from Instagram Benedetto Manzella or Benedetto Menzela,
- 14:22Speaker 1: however you pronounce it. I apologize if I got it wrong.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Subject Bordain message, Hey Jake, been meaning to write this
- 14:28Speaker 1: all week, but my head has been a mess in
- 14:29Speaker 1: my computer was down for the count, and typing on
- 14:32Speaker 1: the touch screen of a phone with my white thumbs
- 14:35Speaker 1: is a crime scene of mafia proportions. So I'll spare
- 14:37Speaker 1: you anyhow. As we messaged about on Instagram, I'm eagerly
- 14:40Speaker 1: looking forward to your episode on Anthony Bourdain and when
- 14:43Speaker 1: you recently asked about your favorite episodes, I knew I
- 14:46Speaker 1: needed to write you directly. I think one of the
- 14:48Speaker 1: trademarks of Bordain in his appeal is he had a
- 14:51Speaker 1: way of reintroducing people to things and places they had
- 14:53Speaker 1: established ideas about. I could easily say episodes in a
- 14:56Speaker 1: variety of international locales and I May Never See You
- 14:58Speaker 1: were my favorite for open my eyes to the life
- 15:01Speaker 1: I'm unfamiliar with. But I found that is two episodes
- 15:03Speaker 1: in Los Angeles memorably hit me. Growing up in a
- 15:06Speaker 1: suburb of LA thirty miles south of downtown, the city
- 15:09Speaker 1: and all it's sprawl has never been something I feel
- 15:11Speaker 1: connected to. I never felt connected to the port Town
- 15:14Speaker 1: suburb of San Pedro where I grew up. Either shout
- 15:17Speaker 1: out to the minimum that's me doing the shadow, but
- 15:20Speaker 1: that is a different story altogether. LA was always talked
- 15:23Speaker 1: about as a monolith of sorts, and with a poorly
- 15:25Speaker 1: maintained bus system, it was always just out of reach.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I'm endlessly grateful for a new perspective on Los Angeles
- 15:32Speaker 1: that has helped me appreciate where I'm from rather than
- 15:35Speaker 1: outright resented. And I may not ever be a fan
- 15:37Speaker 1: of LA, but mister Bourdain conquered my stubbornness, which is
- 15:40Speaker 1: something few have succeeded at. Hopefully this makes sense and
- 15:44Speaker 1: is even a bit entertaining. Cheers. Hey love this, You're
- 15:48Speaker 1: so right. This is why I love Bourdain. This is
- 15:52Speaker 1: why I love most of the sort of adventure writers
- 15:56Speaker 1: who I've read in the past. It's a weird way
- 15:59Speaker 1: of describing them, but you know what I mean. I
- 16:02Speaker 1: feel like we're all looking for a different perspective, aren't we.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Maybe not all of us, but I am. I don't
- 16:07Speaker 1: want to just be coddled in my views. I don't
- 16:10Speaker 1: want to just be shown the same thing that I'm
- 16:13Speaker 1: known to love over and over again. I want to
- 16:16Speaker 1: be challenged and to be totally honest with you. You know,
- 16:21Speaker 1: I felt this way about the Boston episode that Boordain did.
- 16:24Speaker 1: He showed places that I knew existed, some might even
- 16:27Speaker 1: been to before, but showed them in a way that
- 16:31Speaker 1: was had a new light, in a new perspective, and
- 16:34Speaker 1: sort of reinvigorated my feeling for the city at the time,
- 16:39Speaker 1: and definitely for some of those locales. And I'm deep
- 16:43Speaker 1: into Bordain at the moment in the research. I'll talk
- 16:45Speaker 1: about this later, talk about it maybe in the rap
- 16:47Speaker 1: Party episode as well. For those new listeners. That's the
- 16:49Speaker 1: other bonus episode we do in our other podcast feed
- 16:52Speaker 1: for our other podcasts called bad Lands, which is Hollywood
- 16:56Speaker 1: and true crime, not just music and true crime here
- 16:58Speaker 1: and Disgrace that. But anyways, appreciate your email. Thank you. Guys.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Want to email me Disgrace lamdpod at gmail dot com.
- 17:06Speaker 1: As you know, you can also call me leave a voicemail.
- 17:10Speaker 1: You can send me a text as well. Six one
- 17:12Speaker 1: seven nine six six six three eight. I want to
- 17:15Speaker 1: dive into these voicemails and texts right here. All right,
- 17:19Speaker 1: let's hear from our boy ish in the seven to eight.
- 17:21Speaker 2: One Jake, what up your boy ish? Uh?
- 17:26Speaker 3: Talking about Christmas movies?
- 17:28Speaker 4: A little Disgraceland bad Lands crossover.
- 17:32Speaker 2: I'm sure you know and we all know that David
- 17:35Speaker 2: Johanson of New York Dolls is in the movie Scrooge.
- 17:39Speaker 2: So yeah, that's it.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Disco love the crossover, dude. I might play this on
- 17:45Speaker 1: the wrap party as well, because you're so right, the
- 17:50Speaker 1: David Johansson New York Dolls in the movie Scrooge. And
- 17:53Speaker 1: also it's a time to shout out the David Johansson
- 17:55Speaker 1: documentary that's on Showtime. It's been planned now Scorsese produced
- 17:59Speaker 1: it fantastic. Check that out, David Johansson from The New
- 18:03Speaker 1: York Dolls And if any of you have not heard
- 18:05Speaker 1: the New York Dolls episode of Disgrace, and it is
- 18:07Speaker 1: ready and it is waiting for you. All right, let's
- 18:10Speaker 1: hear this message from the four oh two.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Hi, Jake calling from the four oh two. I just
- 18:17Speaker 3: wanted to leave a message about this week's after party.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I am a huge fan. I've been a fan since
- 18:28Speaker 3: day one. I'm a disco through and through. I think
- 18:33Speaker 3: that you've done a great job with navigating, not offending
- 18:37Speaker 3: people and being a little sensitive to the causes that be,
- 18:43Speaker 3: whether it be kiddos or women or crossing boundaries of
- 18:49Speaker 3: some of the more aggressive crimes. I feel like Diddy completed,
- 18:53Speaker 3: uh not completed. I feel like, in my opinion, he
- 18:58Speaker 3: is guilty of some of the things that he has done.
- 19:04Speaker 3: I graduated in ninety three and I was around different people,
- 19:10Speaker 3: and let's just say that, uh, he's not the best guy.
- 19:14Speaker 3: So one of the things I just wanted to say
- 19:17Speaker 3: is when you worded it as he forcefully denies the allegations,
- 19:24Speaker 3: forcefully is not really the best word. Maybe vehemently or
- 19:29Speaker 3: what have you. But I'm sure, irregardless for those of
- 19:34Speaker 3: us with past trauma, that forcefully denies maybe isn't the
- 19:42Speaker 3: best wording. So I know you have the best of intentions.
- 19:44Speaker 3: I love you guys over there, the whole staff says everyone.
- 19:49Speaker 3: I just wanted to say that I know that you
- 19:52Speaker 3: did your best to put the episode out with care,
- 19:54Speaker 3: and I will continue to be a fan. And I
- 19:59Speaker 3: just think he's he's a bad guy and doesn't deserve
- 20:04Speaker 3: any any benefit of the doubt because he is guilty.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Thank you, all right?
- 20:11Speaker 1: Four oh two point taken. I totally get the difference
- 20:14Speaker 1: between forcefully and vehemently in this situation, and appreciate the message.
- 20:22Speaker 1: We're going to get more information, more real, more hard information.
- 20:25Speaker 1: I don't want to say more real, let's just say
- 20:29Speaker 1: more provable, perhaps information on Diddy, And when we do,
- 20:33Speaker 1: we will dive back into this story and tell it
- 20:36Speaker 1: as fully as we can. Thanks again for listening, Thanks
- 20:40Speaker 1: for being open minded, and appreciate the voicemail. All right,
- 20:44Speaker 1: let's check out this voicemail from the nine seventy.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Three yod Jake, how are you? This is Jerry from Planners.
- 20:51Speaker 2: I just heard the episode about the Canadian star the
- 20:55Speaker 2: young lady who was killed by the coyotes. Creepy and brutal,
- 20:59Speaker 2: but I still have I said something once before about this.
- 21:02Speaker 2: I'm going to say it again. There's a great story
- 21:04Speaker 2: about a gentleman named Les Harvey. He was in a
- 21:07Speaker 2: Scottish rock band called Stone the Crows. The lead singer
- 21:11Speaker 2: was Maggie Bell and during a concert, an indoor concert
- 21:16Speaker 2: that the audience screwed around with the crowns and stuff
- 21:19Speaker 2: like that, the gentlemen walked up to the microphone to
- 21:23Speaker 2: do a sound check, and we know that European current
- 21:26Speaker 2: is two twenty. He electrocuted himself on stage in front
- 21:30Speaker 2: of the audience. That's a great story. Come on, all right,
- 21:33Speaker 2: thank you very much.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Bye, Hey nine to seven three, Jerry, he's sick, bastard,
- 21:37Speaker 1: appreciate the text. Jerry's talking about the story of Taylor Mitchell,
- 21:41Speaker 1: which wasn't actually a podcast episode. It was a video
- 21:44Speaker 1: that we just did on Instagram. It's only about sixty
- 21:48Speaker 1: seconds long and it's the story. We're eventually going to
- 21:51Speaker 1: do an episode on it. It's a story of this
- 21:53Speaker 1: young woman, a Canadian folk artist, who goes this wasn't
- 21:57Speaker 1: too long ago. It was about ten fifteen years ago.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Who goes for a walk in a Canadian national forest
- 22:02Speaker 1: and she's she's attacked and eaten alive. I'll let you
- 22:06Speaker 1: guys find out the rest over at this Grace LAMD pod.
- 22:10Speaker 1: There's the story that Jerry's lobbying for here. I don't
- 22:15Speaker 1: remember this Jerry. Perhaps you called him before and I'm
- 22:19Speaker 1: I'm blanking on it. But this is fascinating and if
- 22:22Speaker 1: it doesn't warn a full thirty minute episode, perhaps there's
- 22:25Speaker 1: something I can do in video and get that out there.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I will look into it. I promise you as someone
- 22:31Speaker 1: who has had something very similar happened to him. You know,
- 22:34Speaker 1: I've sang in bands my whole life pretty much, and
- 22:38Speaker 1: when you're a singer in a band, you get electrocuted.
- 22:40Speaker 1: It's just cost of doing business, occupational hazard. It happens,
- 22:45Speaker 1: and I remember it was one of those things that
- 22:47Speaker 1: would when it would happen to me, it would it
- 22:49Speaker 1: would just put me in the absolute worst mood, the
- 22:55Speaker 1: worst mood. There's something about the electrocution, the electricity that
- 23:01Speaker 1: just it just made me angry and in ornery more
- 23:05Speaker 1: so than I was at the time. And I was
- 23:07Speaker 1: a pretty angry kid. But I remember once it happened
- 23:10Speaker 1: so bad in a studio. There was this old studio
- 23:12Speaker 1: that up in Revere, Revere Beach that my buddy Paul
- 23:16Speaker 1: Colderi had taken over for a while and he was
- 23:19Speaker 1: trying to get it back into shape. And I think
- 23:21Speaker 1: it might have been like some like you know, mafia
- 23:23Speaker 1: front back in the day when the mafia was really
- 23:26Speaker 1: running things up in Revere, was a huge studio, Fleetwood
- 23:28Speaker 1: that was the name of it. If it wasn't mafia fronted,
- 23:32Speaker 1: then I apologize to anyone who may be involved or
- 23:35Speaker 1: may have been involved with Fleetwood pre Paul Colderie. But
- 23:37Speaker 1: I remember we were there and and Paul was kind
- 23:39Speaker 1: of using myself because I was a friend of his
- 23:42Speaker 1: and in my band at the time, as sort of
- 23:44Speaker 1: guinea pigs to figure out the kinks in the studio.
- 23:47Speaker 1: And we had done this before when he opened Camp Street,
- 23:49Speaker 1: which was the old Fort Apache, and we were there,
- 23:53Speaker 1: we were recording, and I loved it because there were
- 23:55Speaker 1: so many rooms in this place and it was huge,
- 23:57Speaker 1: massive live room and and a tonne of old gear,
- 24:01Speaker 1: and we were recording in one of the smaller rooms
- 24:04Speaker 1: on this night. And I don't even know if Paul
- 24:06Speaker 1: was there. It was with our friend Adam, who Adam Taylor,
- 24:09Speaker 1: who was engineering for Paul and Adam was involved with
- 24:12Speaker 1: this podcast back in the beginning. And I remember I
- 24:15Speaker 1: stepped to the mic and Adam will remember this and
- 24:17Speaker 1: U my lips hit it and it shocked me so bad.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I it was like fucking h you know, Michael J.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Fox and back to the future. Like I literally I
- 24:27Speaker 1: left the ground and I fell back off my feet,
- 24:31Speaker 1: and uh it was brutal. It was scared the hell
- 24:34Speaker 1: out of everyone. I was too angry to be scared.
- 24:38Speaker 1: But uh yeah, I didn't die, thankfully. That did not
- 24:41Speaker 1: happen in Europe. It happened in Revere. Uh the uh yeah,
- 24:46Speaker 1: North Shore Riviera. Anyways, I'm digressing big time. Six one
- 24:50Speaker 1: seven nine six six six three eight. You guys want
- 24:52Speaker 1: to leave a voicemail or send me a text. I'll
- 24:54Speaker 1: do a couple of texts here real quick. This one
- 24:56Speaker 1: from the seven to three. Hey, I needed to just
- 24:59Speaker 1: write in and tell you and how much Disgraceland has
- 25:01Speaker 1: helped me. I first discovered you in the spring of
- 25:03Speaker 1: twenty eighteen. My dad lived in Florida and was diagnosed
- 25:07Speaker 1: with Alzheimer's disease. I would visit monthly at first, and
- 25:10Speaker 1: as he declined, I would go as often as weekly
- 25:13Speaker 1: until he passed away on July third, twenty nineteen. Your
- 25:17Speaker 1: podcast helped me through the seven hour drive each way
- 25:20Speaker 1: from Charleston, South Carolina to his home in Florida. You
- 25:23Speaker 1: provided entertainment and distraction during the darkest times of my life.
- 25:26Speaker 1: I still listen every time I go on the road
- 25:28Speaker 1: trip and recommend you to everyone I know. Thank you,
- 25:31Speaker 1: Jake Love A huge fan, Jennifer, Jennifer, thank you so much.
- 25:37Speaker 1: I don't even know what to say. This makes me,
- 25:39Speaker 1: It makes me very grateful and humbled to hear you
- 25:43Speaker 1: say this, and yeah, I hope you're doing well. I
- 25:47Speaker 1: hope you're set up for a good holiday season here.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I'm sad to hear about the passing of your dad,
- 25:51Speaker 1: and I'm glad that we here at Double Elvis were
- 25:54Speaker 1: able to provide some sort of distraction or comfort. All right,
- 25:59Speaker 1: guys On seven nine oh six six six, three eight
- 26:04Speaker 1: text or voicemail this one from the three to one,
- 26:07Speaker 1: Oh What's up? Jake and the Jans after party in
- 26:10Speaker 1: the bonus episode. After the Jans Addiction full episode, you
- 26:12Speaker 1: were talking about how you like some of the more
- 26:15Speaker 1: obscure suggestions for band content, Like you, my music tastes
- 26:18Speaker 1: are all over. Back when grunge was coming on the scene,
- 26:21Speaker 1: I lived in Seattle and I was not a fan,
- 26:23Speaker 1: and I generally still am not. But what about an
- 26:26Speaker 1: episode on Mother Lovebone in Temple of the Dog. Lots
- 26:29Speaker 1: of guys from those lineups went on to form some
- 26:31Speaker 1: of the biggest bands of the era. Reminds me of
- 26:33Speaker 1: what was happening in LA in the late seventies and
- 26:35Speaker 1: early eighties when some collabs led to bands like Guns n' Roses,
- 26:37Speaker 1: et cetera. Just a thought, and yeah, man, I did
- 26:40Speaker 1: combine in the feeds so much crossover content to explore
- 26:45Speaker 1: rock a rolla from Ryan out in the three to one. Oh,
- 26:48Speaker 1: We're definitely gonna do a Mother Love Bone. I do
- 26:50Speaker 1: you know what? You're right? There's so much Seattle stuff.
- 26:54Speaker 1: There's the Andrew Woods stuff, there's Chris Cornell, there's Lane Staley.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Almost don't even know how to organize my thoughts around it,
- 27:02Speaker 1: but we are going to do it at some point,
- 27:04Speaker 1: and I want to try to get away without making
- 27:06Speaker 1: a whole other series here and just do a couple
- 27:08Speaker 1: of great episodes for you guys. Six one seven nine
- 27:11Speaker 1: oh six six six three eight, Hit me up, what
- 27:12Speaker 1: do you want to hear? What do you want in
- 27:14Speaker 1: the new year? What episodes do you want? Text me voicemail?
- 27:17Speaker 1: Take quick break back in flash. All right, we are
- 27:34Speaker 1: back in. This is the recommendations part, the part of
- 27:37Speaker 1: the show we recommend the things they need recommending the
- 27:40Speaker 1: recommendations part. Here in the after Party, we're talking music mainly.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Those are the types of recommendations we do. We save
- 27:44Speaker 1: the movie content for over in the Rap Party Bonus episode, unless,
- 27:49Speaker 1: of course, it is a music related movie. And I
- 27:53Speaker 1: am not prepared to talk about any music related movies
- 27:56Speaker 1: right now, because my, my, my brim, I'm full. I'm
- 28:01Speaker 1: totally filled up here with what I'm watching, and I'm
- 28:04Speaker 1: not going to get into it here. But I have
- 28:05Speaker 1: been listening to a lot of stuff, and I've been
- 28:08Speaker 1: trying to organize my thoughts on my favorite Christmas music,
- 28:13Speaker 1: and it's fucking hard because I love Christmas music and
- 28:17Speaker 1: I know you guys do too. Based on the insane
- 28:20Speaker 1: engagement we're seeing over on the Disgraceland Instagram page right now.
- 28:25Speaker 1: The video specifically about the Mariah Carey song All I
- 28:30Speaker 1: Want for Christmas Is You, it being the highest selling,
- 28:33Speaker 1: most successful Christmas song of all time. I asked you, guys,
- 28:36Speaker 1: is it your favorite? And I'm getting inundated with your
- 28:39Speaker 1: favorite so many of them, So I thought, what are
- 28:43Speaker 1: my favorites? And I've been thinking about it all week?
- 28:45Speaker 1: And it's damn hard to answer. Okay, just generally speaking,
- 28:51Speaker 1: as fucking basic as it is, I have to say
- 28:55Speaker 1: that the Vince Giraldi stuff just I mean, it's like
- 29:00Speaker 1: I put the turkey away on Thanksgiving night and I
- 29:03Speaker 1: just reach for that album. It's like the first one
- 29:05Speaker 1: to get me in the spirit. But then, if I'm
- 29:09Speaker 1: actually being honest with myself, once that wears off, once
- 29:12Speaker 1: I'm through the Charlie Brown Melancholy and I'm just in
- 29:15Speaker 1: the spirit and I'm sitting up late at night and
- 29:18Speaker 1: I'm cozy with my stereo and my glass of bourbon.
- 29:22Speaker 1: The thing I almost always go to more often than
- 29:25Speaker 1: not is the Ella Fitzgerald Swinging Christmas Album. It's actually
- 29:30Speaker 1: not called the Swinging Christmas album. It's called a Swinging
- 29:35Speaker 1: Christmas and Ella Fitzgerald has a lot of Christmas content
- 29:38Speaker 1: out there, so don't get it twisted. It's this record, specifically,
- 29:41Speaker 1: a swinging Christmas with Ella Fitzgerald. You cannot go wrong. Okay.
- 29:48Speaker 1: The other thing I need to talk about here the
- 29:50Speaker 1: Dean Martin Christmas album. Again, another guy with a ton
- 29:54Speaker 1: of Christmas content out there, but his version of Blue
- 29:57Speaker 1: Christmas on this record. I'm gonna say something here that
- 30:01Speaker 1: no one's going to agree with me on. It's better
- 30:03Speaker 1: than Elvis's version. And I guarantee you if you asked
- 30:07Speaker 1: Elvis Presley if it was better, he would agree with me.
- 30:10Speaker 1: It's unbelievably cool Dean Martin. I don't know how he
- 30:14Speaker 1: did it. He was one of these guys who was
- 30:15Speaker 1: from that incredibly you know, at the time uncool generation,
- 30:20Speaker 1: the World War two generation, which was extremely uncool to
- 30:24Speaker 1: the you know, to the boomers, the sixties, the hippies,
- 30:27Speaker 1: all that. But he survived all that through the rap
- 30:31Speaker 1: pack years with Frank Sinatra. But even even though that
- 30:35Speaker 1: stuff was for another generation, Dean kind of had this
- 30:37Speaker 1: coolness that I feel like just it it transcended. Maybe
- 30:43Speaker 1: it didn't. Maybe I'm projecting how cool I think Dean
- 30:46Speaker 1: Martin is with this opinion, but I don't know.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Man.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Listen to the vocal on Blue Christmas, his version of it,
- 30:53Speaker 1: and again he's probably got multiple versions of it. I'm
- 30:55Speaker 1: talking about the version on the Dean Martin Christmas album
- 30:59Speaker 1: Beyond Cool, also Christmas Baby, Please Come Home, the Darlene
- 31:03Speaker 1: Love Phil Spector produced Darlene Love Unbelievable all the Letterman.
- 31:09Speaker 1: I went through a fucking I want into a rabbit
- 31:11Speaker 1: hole on Instagram on stories and posted a bunch of
- 31:14Speaker 1: her performances from Letterman doing that song. He would have
- 31:18Speaker 1: her back most every year. Uh, just fantastic. That might
- 31:23Speaker 1: be my favorite, but my real favorite, my real favorite,
- 31:28Speaker 1: I think my favorite of all time right now is this.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Song every Day will be Like Holiday?
- 31:53Speaker 1: Oh killing me? William Bell. Every Day will be Like
- 32:05Speaker 1: a Holiday by William Bell. Okay, apologies for the shitty
- 32:08Speaker 1: sound quality. That's literally me holding my phone up to
- 32:11Speaker 1: the microphone in my closet studio here, all right, But
- 32:16Speaker 1: that song every Day will be Like a Holiday by
- 32:18Speaker 1: William Bell. Again, there are multiple versions of this, but
- 32:21Speaker 1: it is the William Bell version that is the best,
- 32:24Speaker 1: and I think he only has one and just to
- 32:26Speaker 1: be shit sure. I'm going to tell you what record
- 32:28Speaker 1: it's on. It's on an album called the Very Best
- 32:32Speaker 1: of William Bell. So there you go. William Bell Stax guy,
- 32:35Speaker 1: I think, yes, Stax Records, and you can kind of
- 32:36Speaker 1: hear it in the horns. There just a great, great,
- 32:39Speaker 1: great song. So there are a few of my faves.
- 32:43Speaker 1: I could go on and on and on. I want
- 32:45Speaker 1: to tell you a little bit about White Christmas though. Okay,
- 32:49Speaker 1: I'm dreaming. You know, the Irving Berlin one, the one
- 32:51Speaker 1: that Bing Crosby had the massive hit with. That song
- 32:55Speaker 1: is not what you think it is. And I'm gonna
- 32:56Speaker 1: tell you what that song is, but I'm gonna do
- 32:58Speaker 1: it in video form, and I'm gonna do it on
- 32:59Speaker 1: inst at this grace lampod. By the time you hear this,
- 33:02Speaker 1: it's probably going to be up. And it's an incredible story.
- 33:05Speaker 1: It's incredibly dark, and I think you're gonna dig it.
- 33:09Speaker 1: So search that out all right, six one seven nine
- 33:11Speaker 1: oh six six six three eight Hit me back. Let
- 33:14Speaker 1: me know how your Christmas is were, what you did
- 33:16Speaker 1: to celebrate, where you went, what you listened to when
- 33:19Speaker 1: you traveled to wherever it was you were going all right,
- 33:23Speaker 1: I want to know, did you listen to the new
- 33:24Speaker 1: Mariah Carey episode? Did you listen to the rewind Derek
- 33:27Speaker 1: and the Dominoes episode. We originally released this one. We
- 33:30Speaker 1: intentionally did this on December fourteenth, twenty twenty one, as
- 33:34Speaker 1: part of season eight. It was intentionally done as a
- 33:36Speaker 1: Christmas episode. You're going to hear that when you listen
- 33:38Speaker 1: to it. As I mentioned earlier, it's a dark one,
- 33:42Speaker 1: not just because of the tragedy the band's drummer Jim
- 33:44Speaker 1: Gordon or the cocaine addiction of Eric Clapton. By the way,
- 33:47Speaker 1: Eric Clapton, I like Eric Clapton. I don't love Eric
- 33:51Speaker 1: Clapton and the stuff I love. Actually at there's parts
- 33:56Speaker 1: I do love about Eric Clapton. The things I love
- 33:57Speaker 1: about Eric Clapton, I think are the things that most
- 33:59Speaker 1: people hate about Eric Clapton. I like Eric Clapton when
- 34:02Speaker 1: he's making like pop songs. I don't like Eric Clapton
- 34:05Speaker 1: when he's fucking whining over George Harrison's wife and you
- 34:09Speaker 1: know what I mean, Like, come on, dude, it just
- 34:11Speaker 1: it got so dark with that dude, and later I
- 34:15Speaker 1: got it. I mean, you know, you lose a kid.
- 34:17Speaker 1: All I hear, I hear you. I have a lot
- 34:19Speaker 1: of respect for Eric Clapton in a lot of different ways,
- 34:22Speaker 1: but so much of the things that the whole Clapton
- 34:25Speaker 1: is god thing that was never my thing. I'm not
- 34:27Speaker 1: not into that, all right. But anyways, this episode about
- 34:31Speaker 1: Eric Clapton, about Derek and the Dominoes, is also about
- 34:35Speaker 1: the murder of the Lawson family in Germantown, North Carolina,
- 34:38Speaker 1: which happened at Christmas back in nineteen twenty nine. And
- 34:42Speaker 1: you might be saying, what the hell does any of
- 34:44Speaker 1: that have to do with Eric Clapton. We can just
- 34:45Speaker 1: get to listen to the episode, okay, and this is
- 34:48Speaker 1: one of the best produced disgrace Land episodes ever. You're
- 34:52Speaker 1: gonna be on the edge of your seat right where
- 34:54Speaker 1: we intended to put you. Six one seven nine oh
- 34:56Speaker 1: six six six three eight. Leave me a voicemail, semi
- 34:59Speaker 1: tech so let me know what you think. I'm gonna
- 35:01Speaker 1: be back in a quick moment. All right, Welcome back again.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 35:21Speaker 1: You can hit me up on Instagram at disgracelam pod x,
- 35:25Speaker 1: Facebook as well TikTok. We are on TikTok daily multiple
- 35:30Speaker 1: times a day now. Also YouTube at Disgrace Slam Pod.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Let's recap All right, number one, Wait, before I get
- 35:38Speaker 1: into this, I just want to say, I hope you
- 35:40Speaker 1: all have an incredible holiday. I hope you get to stop, pause, breathe,
- 35:46Speaker 1: take a moment, feel real joy, feel the hope, feel
- 35:51Speaker 1: the gratitude for those in your life that you love,
- 35:55Speaker 1: and for the abundance that you have, which, even if
- 35:58Speaker 1: it's not material, I'm sure you have it in other ways, spiritually, creatively,
- 36:03Speaker 1: whatever it may be. We are lucky to be above
- 36:06Speaker 1: ground every day. Feel that, and know that I am
- 36:10Speaker 1: grateful for all of your support. I truly am this
- 36:13Speaker 1: conversation that we have, this community that we've built and
- 36:17Speaker 1: that we are continuing to build. It is very much
- 36:20Speaker 1: part of what makes me get up in the morning.
- 36:23Speaker 1: It is very much part of what makes me happy,
- 36:26Speaker 1: provides me with real happiness, and I am very grateful
- 36:29Speaker 1: to all of you for that. And I sincerely hope
- 36:32Speaker 1: you're having a great holiday season and I'm looking forward
- 36:36Speaker 1: to next year. We got a lot of great stuff
