- 0:20Speaker 1: that we've all been waiting for for in a romax.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Here comes Oscar past three, Lando Norris.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I aren't playing hardball out there at the moment. Steve
- 0:29Speaker 1: pipercheol Moment of twenty twenty.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Four, Hello and welcome to Pit Talk, brought to you
- 0:38Speaker 2: by Shannon's. On today's episode, Lando Norris swins the Monaco
- 0:42Speaker 2: Grand Prix to shave his championship deficit to Oscar Piastre
- 0:45Speaker 2: to just three points and did the new two stop
- 0:48Speaker 2: pit stop r all work at all in Monte Carlo.
- 0:51Speaker 3: My name is Michael Lomonado.
- 0:52Speaker 2: It's great to have your company and the company of
- 0:54Speaker 2: my co host, who, according to my parish notices is
- 0:57Speaker 2: Matt Quaeton.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Parish notices time rather than mentioned parish notices. Seriously, at
- 1:03Speaker 1: least this is an ongoing conversation thanks to our good
- 1:06Speaker 1: friends at Sky Sports. But yes, in answer to your question,
- 1:09Speaker 1: did it work at Monaco. No, but that would be
- 1:12Speaker 1: the world's shortest podcast. We probably need to elaborate.
- 1:14Speaker 2: At least another twenty nine minutes to feel so there
- 1:16Speaker 2: is a little bit more to talk about than that.
- 1:17Speaker 3: But there is, of course the result as well. With
- 1:19Speaker 3: Monico Grand Prix.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Forget the fact that the race is typically was typically
- 1:23Speaker 2: pretty straightforward. Lando Norris wonder and that is significant. His
- 1:26Speaker 2: first Monaco Grand Pritty victory, his sixth degree victory and
- 1:30Speaker 2: a really important one in the sense of this championship.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Actually less about him winning, although that does shrink the
- 1:35Speaker 2: championship deficit.
- 1:36Speaker 3: But I think, as I've been saying a lot, or
- 1:38Speaker 3: only eight rounds.
- 1:39Speaker 2: In, it's probably a bit too early to be counting
- 1:40Speaker 2: points if it's less than a Grand Prix worth of points.
- 1:44Speaker 2: But qualifying on pole, and you know, at a circuit
- 1:47Speaker 2: where it is such a pressure moment to take pole
- 1:49Speaker 2: position in Q three, got three laps to do it,
- 1:51Speaker 2: They're already good, They're already complete.
- 1:53Speaker 3: This felt like a very important weekend from that perspective.
- 1:56Speaker 1: For him, Well, he hasn't had much momentum for a while,
- 1:58Speaker 1: has he. So I think that qualifying in caps related
- 2:00Speaker 1: everything about his weekend that he had poll lost it,
- 2:03Speaker 1: reclaimed it. Fantastic last two or three corners of that
- 2:07Speaker 1: lap when you go back and watch the end of it.
- 2:09Speaker 1: And that's been a McLaren's strength a we year in
- 2:11Speaker 1: terms of being able to have enough tire life for
- 2:14Speaker 1: the final sector or the final couple of corners. We
- 2:16Speaker 1: saw that in Australia. I mentioned Australia because that was
- 2:18Speaker 1: the last time Norris looked like the class of the field.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Since then, Piastre has had a run of wins. We've
- 2:24Speaker 1: had various max Fistappen interventions as the season has gone along,
- 2:28Speaker 1: but this is the first time Lando looked like he
- 2:30Speaker 1: was bossing Formula One again. And so much of this
- 2:34Speaker 1: race obviously is one on Saturday, but coming into this
- 2:37Speaker 1: weekend I wasn't sure that he was going to put
- 2:39Speaker 1: it together in that way on Saturday. Hugely impressive, but
- 2:43Speaker 1: in terms of redressing some of the momentum lost in
- 2:47Speaker 1: the series and also within his own team, really significant result.
- 2:50Speaker 1: And look, we're what one third of the way through
- 2:53Speaker 1: the longest season in the history of Formula One, as
- 2:55Speaker 1: we get told every year, so points tables as such
- 2:58Speaker 1: are not particularly relevant. What this does for momentum and continuity.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Getting him back to where he wasn't the beginning of
- 3:03Speaker 1: the season I think is almost more important.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it's also interesting as well.
- 3:06Speaker 2: You know it was ahead of this weekend he was
- 3:08Speaker 2: saying that the problems he's facing with this car could
- 3:11Speaker 2: take him not weeks, but maybe even months to fully
- 3:13Speaker 2: understand and return to that kind of qualifying form Worth
- 3:17Speaker 2: noting that after qualifying he said, look, this is one result.
- 3:20Speaker 2: As important as it is, it's one we've got to see.
- 3:22Speaker 2: If I can do this at multiple races is also
- 3:24Speaker 2: one very particular circuit. But as I think Andrea Stella said,
- 3:27Speaker 2: the mclarentine principle, there is no.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Stronger validation than Monaco for if you.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Can qualify in formul one, qualify well and like you say,
- 3:36Speaker 2: there's three laps is something that almost would have been
- 3:39Speaker 2: unimaginable at any.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Week since Australia.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yes, because it's those last tens of a second that
- 3:44Speaker 2: he just hasn't found, and on three occasions he found them.
- 3:47Speaker 3: I think this could be.
- 3:48Speaker 2: It's also very interesting because it feels like a very
- 3:50Speaker 2: asymmetrical result, doesn't it, Because it's Norris making a lot
- 3:53Speaker 2: of gains and that potentially being significant in the championship
- 3:56Speaker 2: is maybe being a turning point. But I don't feel
- 3:59Speaker 2: like we can necessar read anything negative in Oscar Piastre's
- 4:02Speaker 2: weekend here. Yes, it was a bit of a scrappy
- 4:03Speaker 2: build up, messy round, as he said. But while I
- 4:06Speaker 2: think it is fair to say Norris's execution you can
- 4:09Speaker 2: take away from this because execution is the same at
- 4:11Speaker 2: any track, Monaco feels so particular that I'm not convinced
- 4:14Speaker 2: we can say that Piastre has lost anything this weekend.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, particular is the correct word here, because look,
- 4:20Speaker 1: in isolation, this is a terrific weekend for Lando Norris,
- 4:23Speaker 1: you know, got back some of them are mentioned he'd
- 4:25Speaker 1: lost internally at McLaren since Piastre went on this run.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Because it is so particular, it's hard to really extrapolate
- 4:32Speaker 1: too much out of it in terms of what this
- 4:33Speaker 1: means going forward. I'm not sure this weekend bears no
- 4:36Speaker 1: relevance to any weekend, Let's be perfectly honest, even some
- 4:39Speaker 1: of the other tight street circuits we go to later
- 4:41Speaker 1: in the season, like Singapore, for example, Singapore and Monaco, yes,
- 4:44Speaker 1: they're both street tracks, but not all street tracks are
- 4:46Speaker 1: created equal. This is the outlier of out liars. I'm
- 4:49Speaker 1: not sure. Piastre was a little of percentage points off
- 4:52Speaker 1: where he has been and it's been at such a
- 4:54Speaker 1: high level now for so many weekends. You know, he
- 4:57Speaker 1: used the word MESSI it was a little bit messy.
- 5:00Speaker 1: He also did to finish on the podium for the
- 5:01Speaker 1: seventh consecutive GROWNDBURI, So this is what constitutes a messy
- 5:05Speaker 1: weekend now. So these are the margins we're playing with.
- 5:08Speaker 1: So Norris definitely rose to the occasion, but I think
- 5:11Speaker 1: we probably need maybe a greater sample size to see
- 5:14Speaker 1: whether is he really back like the start of the season,
- 5:18Speaker 1: or is this an outlier based on track position, circuit
- 5:20Speaker 1: and just the peculiarities of the Monaco weekend because there
- 5:24Speaker 1: is nothing like this Grand Prix.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I like the idea that this could be viewed as
- 5:28Speaker 2: a leveler rather than a step forward for Norris and
- 5:31Speaker 2: now he's going to control the next furations. Obviously we
- 5:33Speaker 2: don't know. Maybe that's exactly what it will happen, but
- 5:36Speaker 2: I think it was easy to lose over the last
- 5:38Speaker 2: few rounds of the fact that these are two drivers
- 5:40Speaker 2: who are extremely closely matched, very different psychological makeups and
- 5:44Speaker 2: therefore some subtle differences in strengths and weaknesses.
- 5:47Speaker 3: But this should be a very tight battle between them.
- 5:50Speaker 2: We're now a third of the way of the season
- 5:51Speaker 2: and it's three points and it feels like that's about right.
- 5:54Speaker 1: But this is what I like about the way these
- 5:55Speaker 1: two guys go about it, and for anyone playing drinking
- 5:58Speaker 1: game at home with the podcast Styles make Fights, it's
- 6:00Speaker 1: one of my favorite expressions. I love the fact these
- 6:02Speaker 1: two guys have both got six Grand Prix wins now,
- 6:05Speaker 1: but you look at the way they go about it emotionally,
- 6:08Speaker 1: the body language of their cars have, the way they
- 6:10Speaker 1: deal with the press and the stress and the pressure
- 6:13Speaker 1: and everything that goes into making a Grand Prix weekend.
- 6:16Speaker 1: They come at it from such different angles a lot
- 6:18Speaker 1: of the time, racing the same car for the same
- 6:21Speaker 1: team and ending up three points between them and the championship.
- 6:24Speaker 1: It's almost a dead heater for eight rounds. It's going
- 6:26Speaker 1: to be the most interesting part of the rest of
- 6:27Speaker 1: the season for me. If they do have this baked
- 6:29Speaker 1: in car advantage, it's not going to be two guys
- 6:32Speaker 1: doing the same thing going head to head to see
- 6:34Speaker 1: who's better. I think they're both going to have their
- 6:35Speaker 1: strengths and weaknesses depending on the circuit and the circumstances
- 6:39Speaker 1: of the weekend. And yeah, the styles that each of
- 6:42Speaker 1: these guys employees is going to make this more interesting
- 6:44Speaker 1: as we head through the rest of the season.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it doesn't feel like just because although this will
- 6:49Speaker 2: be something will come to later in future weeks, just
- 6:51Speaker 2: because McLaren feels like it's got the upper hand.
- 6:53Speaker 3: I think it could still be a really great championship. Doll.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I want to talk about Ferrari now, Charlie Claire second
- 6:57Speaker 2: best result of the year for him, for the team.
- 7:00Speaker 2: He was in this great mixed emotional mood afterwards. I
- 7:04Speaker 2: think after qualifying second and after finishing second recognize on
- 7:07Speaker 2: the one hand that this is much better than Ferrari
- 7:09Speaker 2: had been expecting that they've achieved so far this year.
- 7:11Speaker 2: But to finish second at Monaco is very difficult, especially
- 7:15Speaker 2: when he had that great breakthrough victory at this home
- 7:17Speaker 2: race last season. He is, I think, more than almost
- 7:21Speaker 2: more than any driver at any track, lifts higher. I
- 7:25Speaker 2: can't think of another driver who lifts higher for any
- 7:27Speaker 2: track than he does at Monaco because he was special
- 7:30Speaker 2: to watch this weekend, would have been a deserving winner
- 7:32Speaker 2: and he somehow manufactured that result.
- 7:34Speaker 3: But what do we take away from Ferrari for this weekend?
- 7:36Speaker 2: Because it was a high water make even Lewis Hamilton
- 7:38Speaker 2: finished so distantly in fifth, was still pretty competitive over
- 7:41Speaker 2: the course of the weekend.
- 7:42Speaker 3: It was a qualifying penalty that really affected his rates.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Is this a good result for Ferrari? Good takeaway for Ferrari?
- 7:50Speaker 1: Look from how erratic that it's been. I don't think
- 7:54Speaker 1: you can look at this anything other than a great
- 7:56Speaker 1: result for the circumstances. We mentioned the word outlier. Leclere
- 7:59Speaker 1: is fantastic at this race track and there's an energy
- 8:03Speaker 1: to the way he does everything here. And it's so
- 8:05Speaker 1: interesting to see that home race pressure and what that
- 8:08Speaker 1: does to drivers. And we see it every year in
- 8:09Speaker 1: albert Park when we had Mark Webber or Daniel Ricardo
- 8:12Speaker 1: Oscar Piastri. There is something about a home race and
- 8:15Speaker 1: you remember going back f one and a bygone era.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Jensen Button was always awesome in Australia and terrible a
- 8:21Speaker 1: Silverstone and Mark Webber was the opposite. They wish they
- 8:23Speaker 1: could trade a lot of the time. But I love
- 8:25Speaker 1: Lacleur at this circuit because he does stand taller and
- 8:28Speaker 1: he does feel a sense of expectation with what he
- 8:31Speaker 1: wants to do. What can we take away with from
- 8:34Speaker 1: this with Ferrari? Look, I have trust issues. Perhaps it's me.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It's not you, it's me. I have trust issues because
- 8:43Speaker 1: every time we think we've got them figured out and
- 8:45Speaker 1: there's a trajectory there, positive or negative, they'll turn up
- 8:49Speaker 1: at the next Grand Prix and it'll be completely tipped
- 8:51Speaker 1: upside down. You look at where we're going in a
- 8:53Speaker 1: week's time. Is there a more different circuit than the
- 8:56Speaker 1: circuit of Barcelona? Cattle and you're for a Formula one
- 8:58Speaker 1: car than Monaco. I always think that the Spanish Grand Prix,
- 9:02Speaker 1: if there's an inherent weakness in your car, that track
- 9:06Speaker 1: exposes it brutally because of the nature of that layout,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and there's just nowhere to hide there. It's never a
- 9:13Speaker 1: particularly great Grand Prix, ReSpectacle but it's not a place
- 9:16Speaker 1: that tells any lies. And if you've got some issues
- 9:19Speaker 1: with your car, this place will expose them. And so
- 9:22Speaker 1: in answer to your question, I'm going to sit on
- 9:24Speaker 1: the fence for seven whole days here because if we're
- 9:26Speaker 1: still having a semi positive conversation after Cataloonia, then look,
- 9:30Speaker 1: maybe you know the thing that the light for Ferrari
- 9:32Speaker 1: is not the oncoming trainer at the end of the tunnel,
- 9:35Speaker 1: but Leclaire at this race track is special and you
- 9:38Speaker 1: have to think that when Lando Norris locked up into
- 9:41Speaker 1: turn one there, his eyes would have got very, very big.
- 9:44Speaker 1: It's like this Chad's to be a back to back winner,
- 9:47Speaker 1: but considering how bad he's luck usually is there, I
- 9:49Speaker 1: think the second place in the circumstances is pretty good.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Well remarkably just his second podium, yes after victory last year,
- 9:55Speaker 2: despite him being the three three time pole.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Well, he barely finishes a race there all last year
- 10:00Speaker 1: because it would always be poland then be some sort
- 10:02Speaker 1: of disaster where it didn't even start one year. I remember,
- 10:05Speaker 1: everything that could go wrong did so at least he
- 10:07Speaker 1: banished that last year and that was a hugely emotional
- 10:09Speaker 1: part of the twenty twenty four season. But as good
- 10:12Speaker 1: a weekend as could be imagined, but also not a
- 10:14Speaker 1: surprise because it's charlat Clerk and it's Monco.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 10:17Speaker 2: At least the curse was broken by the victrinalistic and
- 10:20Speaker 2: aim for more than just finishing in the points of
- 10:22Speaker 2: finishing at all.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Before we move on, and I do want to talk briefly.
- 10:25Speaker 2: About Red Bull Racing because two teams came to this
- 10:28Speaker 2: track feeling pretty pessimistic. One was Ferrari and they ended
- 10:31Speaker 2: up having a reasonable weekend. The other was Red Bull Racing.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I think Max with Stappan got exactly what he thought
- 10:35Speaker 2: he was going to get out of this, which was
- 10:37Speaker 2: not a podium, a trying and a bold strategy that
- 10:40Speaker 2: didn't work. I think the evidence of this weekend for
- 10:43Speaker 2: Red Bull Racing, or the takeaway is that this car
- 10:46Speaker 2: has all the same problems as last year's car. Maybe
- 10:48Speaker 2: it's slightly more benign in some circumstances, but its weakness
- 10:52Speaker 2: in slow corners still exists cannot be ameliorated in the
- 10:55Speaker 2: same way.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Clearly Ferrari managed to do so at this.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Track, and I think we should be questioned about taking
- 11:01Speaker 2: it too much away from this weekend because it is
- 11:04Speaker 2: such an outlier. But this felt very validating for everything
- 11:07Speaker 2: we thought we understood about this car. It does it
- 11:10Speaker 2: will be an interesting piece to fit into the puzzle
- 11:12Speaker 2: of whether or not this championship campaign is real because
- 11:14Speaker 2: it does feel like that question we thought were getting
- 11:15Speaker 2: an answer to a Nimola Yeah, was put on ice
- 11:17Speaker 2: this weekend, and it's hard to know what to interpret
- 11:20Speaker 2: from it. Well, I feel like I understand Ferrari less right,
- 11:23Speaker 2: but I feel like I'm beginning to understand red Bull more.
- 11:26Speaker 2: This car does not like being monster over curbs. We've
- 11:29Speaker 2: seen that for.
- 11:29Speaker 1: The last couple of years, and you could see that
- 11:32Speaker 1: in the way that Max Stepan was trying to drive
- 11:33Speaker 1: it compared to the way Yuki Sonoda was trying to
- 11:35Speaker 1: drive it, and that's a separate conversation. Max has shrugged
- 11:39Speaker 1: his shoulders and said, well, this car doesn't like this,
- 11:41Speaker 1: I'll just drive around that, which is what you can
- 11:43Speaker 1: do when you're a four time world champion and pound
- 11:45Speaker 1: for pound, the best guy in the sport at the moment.
- 11:47Speaker 1: This was just a par weekend for them to see
- 11:51Speaker 1: a four time world champion for a team of that pedigree. Basically,
- 11:54Speaker 1: goal hanging for a safety car or a red flag
- 11:56Speaker 1: was a little bit undercoming quite franickly, but by the
- 11:59Speaker 1: same time, and what other cards did they have to play?
- 12:02Speaker 1: They weren't in the race with Ferrari. They went in
- 12:05Speaker 1: the race with McLaren. They had Mercedes had a weird
- 12:07Speaker 1: sort of weekend point this weekend, so they had them covered.
- 12:11Speaker 1: He did the only thing he could do in that
- 12:13Speaker 1: I'm going to leave this second stop as late as
- 12:14Speaker 1: humanly possible. Something might happen, and if it doesn't, I'm
- 12:17Speaker 1: just going to finish where I was probably going to
- 12:19Speaker 1: finish anyway. So it was nothing ventured, nothing gained. But
- 12:22Speaker 1: I feel I feel we've got a pretty good hold
- 12:24Speaker 1: on what Red Bull is. Max will make that cargo
- 12:28Speaker 1: place as it probably shouldn't. Is it as bad as
- 12:31Speaker 1: Sonoda's making it look? No, The sweet spot somewhere in
- 12:34Speaker 1: the middle, probably closer to where Max is. He's still
- 12:36Speaker 1: going to have tracks where his sheer ability and the
- 12:39Speaker 1: strength of that car and track position is going to
- 12:41Speaker 1: get him. He's going to be a disruptor where the
- 12:44Speaker 1: rest of this season goes. But I still think it's
- 12:45Speaker 1: a two driver to fight for the championship, with Max
- 12:48Speaker 1: being probably annoying to both of them at some point
- 12:51Speaker 1: through the back end of the year where he just
- 12:52Speaker 1: has awesome weekends that you can't explain well.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Like you said, I think Barcelona will be the limbus
- 12:56Speaker 2: test for so much of what we think we know
- 12:57Speaker 2: about this campaign.
- 12:58Speaker 3: So that'll be this weekend.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Before were on from Monaco, though, we've got to talk
- 13:01Speaker 2: about what was the talking point leading into this weekend.
- 13:04Speaker 2: This rule change to mandate two stops in Monte Carlo.
- 13:07Speaker 2: This was brought in. It was relatively recently he was
- 13:08Speaker 2: brought in, but it was in response the last year's
- 13:11Speaker 2: shocker of a race, when, of course that early red
- 13:13Speaker 2: flag went there were effectively no pit stops, at least
- 13:15Speaker 2: among the leaders of the top ten. Two stops mandatory
- 13:19Speaker 2: at least fixes that, because even if that were to
- 13:20Speaker 2: happen again, there'd be one more stop. It's probably worth
- 13:24Speaker 2: considering at the end of this that the top four
- 13:26Speaker 2: finished in grid order effectively the top ten did. When
- 13:29Speaker 2: you take out Fernando Lonso's retirement, Lewis Hamilton recovering from
- 13:32Speaker 2: the penalty you got after qualifying. Everyone finished pretty much
- 13:35Speaker 2: where they started, So in one sense you could say
- 13:38Speaker 2: two stops at the same track makes no difference because
- 13:40Speaker 2: it's at Monaco. We did, though, get this interesting battle
- 13:43Speaker 2: in the lower reaches of the points. Say battle, it's
- 13:46Speaker 2: probably not exactly the right word, it's not a race.
- 13:48Speaker 2: It wow, it's not a race. It really was a race.
- 13:51Speaker 2: The racing bulls started it with Liam Lawson backing up
- 13:55Speaker 2: the pack for Isaac Hadja to make his two pit
- 13:57Speaker 2: stops for free.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Essentially, William saw that and said, well a bit of that.
- 14:00Speaker 2: They did exactly the same, but twice as significant, because
- 14:03Speaker 2: then they swapped their cars and got Alex al wanted
- 14:05Speaker 2: to do exactly what Parlo Signs had done for him.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Mercedes then presumably would have found a way to double that,
- 14:10Speaker 2: but George Russell's brain just broke. I overtook alex Alban
- 14:14Speaker 2: I think it was all the time off the track,
- 14:16Speaker 2: and then copped a drive through penalty and thinks that
- 14:18Speaker 2: was better for him.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 14:20Speaker 2: I'm not certain what to conclude from this. I've been
- 14:23Speaker 2: thinking about it all day. In some respects, all of
- 14:26Speaker 2: this stuff is pretty part of the course in Monaco,
- 14:28Speaker 2: but it felt much more exaggerated and much worse.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Or was it much better?
- 14:35Speaker 1: It wasn't necessarily much worse. It's just with the two
- 14:38Speaker 1: pit stops we had twice the opportunities to lament how
- 14:41Speaker 1: bad it was. Literally, that's literally I'm saying it normally
- 14:45Speaker 1: it's like, well there's only one stop and everyone's driving
- 14:47Speaker 1: around information, but at least we've got the stops done.
- 14:49Speaker 1: It's like we have to do this again. And so
- 14:51Speaker 1: you had two separate things going on. I think the
- 14:53Speaker 1: top four we're having a race much as they are
- 14:55Speaker 1: constrained by having a race in Monaco. And I'm not
- 14:58Speaker 1: sure what everyone else in the pack was doing because
- 15:00Speaker 1: you mentioned the Alonso retirement. Unlucky it's going Formula one
- 15:03Speaker 1: just yea, he should have scored points. He was fantastic
- 15:06Speaker 1: this week, Hare and Lewis Hamilton sort of settling into
- 15:09Speaker 1: where he probably should have been post penalty. But watching
- 15:12Speaker 1: what racing bulls were doing in that Liam Lawson literally
- 15:15Speaker 1: he may may as well have had a caravan on
- 15:17Speaker 1: the back of that thing, you know, not getting on
- 15:19Speaker 1: the on the hard shoulder, and Haja does two pit
- 15:22Speaker 1: stops and basically stays exactly where he is, and then
- 15:25Speaker 1: the domino effect that caused and William's doing it worse
- 15:29Speaker 1: but pointing at racing bulls that we'll get it first.
- 15:31Speaker 1: It people became a bit school yard, didn't it. But
- 15:35Speaker 1: I don't know how you solved this because it's Monaco,
- 15:38Speaker 1: and it's Formula one. It's an outlier and it's great
- 15:40Speaker 1: that it exists, but it's also great there's only one
- 15:42Speaker 1: of them. But as a spectacle, normally you have a
- 15:46Speaker 1: slow car race at Monaco. I'm not sure anyone passed
- 15:49Speaker 1: about position five last night was actually having a car race.
- 15:52Speaker 1: It was a procession and the rules were being gamified
- 15:56Speaker 1: to a point that it actually kind of jumped the
- 15:58Speaker 1: shark a little bit. It got a little bit silly,
- 16:00Speaker 1: and George Russell just basically saying, I'm going to deliberately
- 16:04Speaker 1: overtake somebody and copper penalty, and surely that will even
- 16:08Speaker 1: be better than what I'm doing, because breaking his brain
- 16:10Speaker 1: is completely right. I can't do this anymore. I'm not
- 16:13Speaker 1: getting any points anyway, so I may as well have
- 16:15Speaker 1: some fun and try and do something and then copp
- 16:17Speaker 1: a very severe penalty for doing it. But look, it's
- 16:21Speaker 1: the nature of this place. The cars. Now. It's funny
- 16:24Speaker 1: because Monico's got this incredible history. You see old vision
- 16:28Speaker 1: of old Formula one cars around Monaco, when they were
- 16:30Speaker 1: lighter and more nimble and didn't just take up so
- 16:33Speaker 1: much real estate on the circuit. These cars now look
- 16:36Speaker 1: insanely big in some of these really really narrow parts
- 16:39Speaker 1: of the track. And we mentioned this last week. The
- 16:42Speaker 1: last five minutes of Q three is awesome too, that
- 16:45Speaker 1: because everything's on the line, you almost don't know where
- 16:47Speaker 1: to look. I'd actually almost one shot qualifying for Monica.
- 16:52Speaker 1: I actually wouldn't mind that everyone gets to go out
- 16:55Speaker 1: and does their lap independently without anybody else. That would
- 16:57Speaker 1: be awesome to be because I fe you miss a
- 16:58Speaker 1: lot of the stuff in qualifying in Monica. So much
- 17:00Speaker 1: going on. Yeah, the race, you'd be happy to miss it,
- 17:02Speaker 1: quite frankly, because once you get past the first quarter
- 17:05Speaker 1: and any potential jeopardy, not a hell of a lot happens.
- 17:08Speaker 1: But racing Balls saw the double pit stop strategy as
- 17:13Speaker 1: a way to really gamify this race and look full
- 17:15Speaker 1: credit to them, they qualified well and they scored a
- 17:18Speaker 1: lot of points doing it. Was it a great spectacle?
- 17:20Speaker 1: I would suggest not.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it was really interesting. To go back
- 17:24Speaker 2: to George Us, I thought it was very interesting that
- 17:26Speaker 2: the reason he overtook off the track, Yes, part of
- 17:28Speaker 2: this brain breaking moment, but he said, I just want
- 17:31Speaker 2: to have I just want to enjoy being at Monaco
- 17:33Speaker 2: because he'd spent the whole time in traffic and he'd
- 17:36Speaker 2: lost qualifying. I think that was also the critical part
- 17:38Speaker 2: because he had a technical failure at the very beginning
- 17:40Speaker 2: Q treies, so they didn't even have a real chance
- 17:42Speaker 2: to really open the taps and have a crack here.
- 17:44Speaker 2: So I'm just can I take it off the track?
- 17:46Speaker 2: I know I'm going to get a penalty. In fact,
- 17:47Speaker 2: teams were warned that if this exact scenario happened, it
- 17:50Speaker 2: would be more than just the ten seconds.
- 17:52Speaker 3: It would be the potential for a driver. So he
- 17:53Speaker 3: even knew that.
- 17:54Speaker 2: I'm doing it anyway, he said, The last twenty five
- 17:56Speaker 2: laps had great fun.
- 17:58Speaker 3: It doesn't matter. I was going to score points anyway
- 17:59Speaker 3: I could. Doesn't matter.
- 18:01Speaker 2: But I think that's important because even an ordinary and
- 18:04Speaker 2: now last year's is unusually bad. So let's just say
- 18:06Speaker 2: a normal bad race like the kind we had at
- 18:08Speaker 2: the very front. Yeah, were was sort of like bit
- 18:10Speaker 2: of tension, but nothing too serious. The drivers still come
- 18:13Speaker 2: out of the car and have enjoyed themselves. Because they
- 18:15Speaker 2: were at Monaco. They knew what they were getting themselves
- 18:17Speaker 2: into when they qualified. They knew that was where they're
- 18:19Speaker 2: going to finish, but they still enjoyed what the Monaco
- 18:22Speaker 2: race was, which is very which is unique and should
- 18:24Speaker 2: be unique. If drivers then get out of the car
- 18:27Speaker 2: and have had a really bad time on Sunday, then
- 18:31Speaker 2: the spectacle completely falls down because you can just about
- 18:33Speaker 2: stomach the race being bad. If at least the drivers
- 18:36Speaker 2: can express afterwards the challenge of staying out of the
- 18:39Speaker 2: wall and of being relatively fast around the track. If not,
- 18:42Speaker 2: then it doesn't make any sense at all.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Well, the two Williams guys in the pen after the
- 18:48Speaker 1: race were so honest. I'm not sure that you know,
- 18:52Speaker 1: the organizers and the governing body would have loved it
- 18:54Speaker 1: all that much. But Alex Albom basically apologized, I'm really
- 18:59Speaker 1: sorry that you had to sit through this because of
- 19:01Speaker 1: the way we did it, but we had no choice,
- 19:03Speaker 1: and Carlo Science was similarly forthright with his comments. There're
- 19:06Speaker 1: two good guys to get a sound bite out of
- 19:08Speaker 1: in a situation like that. They're two grown ups in
- 19:10Speaker 1: the room. But even as they're doing it, I can't
- 19:13Speaker 1: quite believe we're going through with this. I also can't
- 19:15Speaker 1: quite believe that everyone's watching it. But I don't know
- 19:17Speaker 1: about you. We have this conversation every year with Monaco.
- 19:19Speaker 1: How can we fix Monocac? How can we fix Monaco?
- 19:22Speaker 1: You can't fix Monico. The only way you have a
- 19:24Speaker 1: different Monoco is if you don't have Monoco at all.
- 19:27Speaker 1: So you have to go into this weekend with the
- 19:29Speaker 1: lowest possible expectations that it's going to be anything other
- 19:32Speaker 1: than a slight variation on what it's been. And we
- 19:35Speaker 1: watch the cars go around, and qualifying's great, and it
- 19:37Speaker 1: looks great on TV, and there's some shots of the boats,
- 19:40Speaker 1: and then we all go to the next round and
- 19:42Speaker 1: you just have to see it as one round in
- 19:43Speaker 1: twenty four. You can't fix everything. It is what it is.
- 19:46Speaker 1: It's there for a reason. We move on.
- 19:48Speaker 2: I think the solution, if anyone for everyone is watching,
- 19:50Speaker 2: is genuine by the way you're doing the format exactly
- 19:52Speaker 2: as it is now. But then Sunday morning, after you
- 19:55Speaker 2: have qualifying Saturday night, you have your one shot qualifying
- 19:58Speaker 2: with just the top ten a little bit Bathist style,
- 20:01Speaker 2: except obviously Bathist gets its own day. But the reason
- 20:03Speaker 2: I say move that to Sunday is that at least
- 20:04Speaker 2: at the end of Sunday, the talking point is where
- 20:07Speaker 2: did they qualify because that's where they finished, inevitably, and
- 20:10Speaker 2: you get your one shot qualifying, which you spectacular at Monaco.
- 20:12Speaker 2: It makes Sunday more meaningful than just asking Christian Horner
- 20:16Speaker 2: why the track should be extended, which inevitably happens and
- 20:19Speaker 2: will never happen. So I think, do one shot qualifying,
- 20:22Speaker 2: make it Sunday, get more qualifying, which is what's good
- 20:24Speaker 2: about Monaco, more Bank fee Buck, and Sunday then becomes
- 20:27Speaker 2: meaningful because the race is You can put it in
- 20:29Speaker 2: brackets afterwards.
- 20:31Speaker 1: And you could say, well, why we're making an exception
- 20:33Speaker 1: for this one Grand Prix Monaco is an exception by
- 20:36Speaker 1: true the fact that it even exists. It's a two
- 20:38Speaker 1: hundred and sixty kilometer car race. It's not like any
- 20:40Speaker 1: of the other races on the calendar. We're already making
- 20:43Speaker 1: so many concessions to keep this thing on the calendar.
- 20:45Speaker 1: So sure, let's have our top ten one qualify.
- 20:48Speaker 3: I think that's the one for it.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Let's run the track in reverse one year, let's go
- 20:51Speaker 1: completely let's go completely crazy, let's do something different because
- 20:54Speaker 1: it is a different Grand Prix.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think that's that's all it needs to
- 20:56Speaker 2: be done. We don't need these extra stops. You can
- 20:58Speaker 2: keep it if you want. Maybe next year will be fixed remarkably, Matt,
- 21:01Speaker 2: it's time for Move of the Week, brought to you
- 21:03Speaker 2: by Shadons. Now we're going to transition soon to some
- 21:09Speaker 2: other sports, so I'm going to kick us off, and
- 21:12Speaker 2: this is less of a move of the week and
- 21:14Speaker 2: more of an appreciation of the week because I watched
- 21:17Speaker 2: back the Monaco Grand Prix.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Sadly you did.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Gabrielle bought a leto made an overtake on Andrea Kimi
- 21:24Speaker 2: Antonelli one overtake he did, and Niko Holkenberg overtook Yuki Sonoda,
- 21:29Speaker 2: both on the first lap. They're the only two overtakes
- 21:31Speaker 2: I could find. So they're going to share for me
- 21:33Speaker 2: the move of the week because they made overtake move.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Yes, Gabriel immediately ended up in defense after his but
- 21:41Speaker 2: you know what he tried first.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Tom Souber has been mentioned on this podcast possibly ever
- 21:46Speaker 1: the greatest overtaking car in Formula One.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Yes, they got they were the only teams that moved forward.
- 21:52Speaker 1: On the first They had a crack.
- 21:53Speaker 2: They had a good crack and as a result, they
- 21:56Speaker 2: are my moves of the.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Week Moves Plural were speaking of having a crack. I'm
- 22:00Speaker 1: going two wheels here. You and I were messaging as
- 22:04Speaker 1: this was going on the Motor II race that the
- 22:05Speaker 1: British Grand Prix. Sylveston Sener Ags pulled the Stephen Bradbury
- 22:10Speaker 1: on the final lap of the Motor two race, made
- 22:13Speaker 1: the most of some silliness going on between Aaron Connett
- 22:16Speaker 1: and David Alonzo i'pen ahead of him, played the last
- 22:19Speaker 1: two corners of the final lap of the race absolutely
- 22:22Speaker 1: spectacularly and ends up becoming Australia's first intermediate class winner
- 22:26Speaker 1: since Remy Gardner five years ago. First Grand Prix win
- 22:30Speaker 1: for him and certainly won't be the last. He's nineteen
- 22:33Speaker 1: ags and there's just something about him, the way he
- 22:36Speaker 1: carries himself, how rapid the learning curve has been. We
- 22:40Speaker 1: remember him on the podium a philipp Island last year
- 22:42Speaker 1: completely out of mirror. This was that opportunistically brilliant win
- 22:46Speaker 1: taken from a position of composure. These are the wins
- 22:49Speaker 1: that these guys have that are going to make it
- 22:51Speaker 1: coming through. Fantastically opportunistic. Great to see an Australian on
- 22:55Speaker 1: top step of a Motor GP podium. Haven't seen one
- 22:57Speaker 1: for a while, but Move of the Week. I don't
- 22:59Speaker 1: know if it gets any better when you go from
- 23:01Speaker 1: third to first with two quarters to go, will your
- 23:03Speaker 1: first grond brew.
- 23:04Speaker 2: I love that as well because some people think, I know,
- 23:06Speaker 2: when there's two riders or drivers battling, it's just easy
- 23:08Speaker 2: wait for to make a mistake. But you could really tell,
- 23:10Speaker 2: and this was a great example of it.
- 23:12Speaker 3: You've really got to.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Think ahead to make a move like that work. You've
- 23:15Speaker 2: got to predict what's going to happen, and he nailed it.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Well, and also knowing the personnel in that situation, like
- 23:20Speaker 1: Aaron Connett is not going down wondering in that sort
- 23:22Speaker 1: of situation. He's not going to be bullied by an
- 23:25Speaker 1: eighteen year old kid that's come up from Moto three.
- 23:27Speaker 1: So you knew that Canett was going to very robustly
- 23:29Speaker 1: defend their last quarter, and I just knew the personnel
- 23:32Speaker 1: that was ahead of him and played it perfectly. And
- 23:34Speaker 1: he's a Grand Prix winner.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Yes, congratulations to him. Now.
- 23:37Speaker 2: In a related note, let's move to interested versus experts.
- 23:42Speaker 2: A lot of me being interested this week and you
- 23:44Speaker 2: being the expert because it was. There was no supercars
- 23:45Speaker 2: this round this weekend. Rather we've still got a couple
- 23:48Speaker 2: of weeks before the roundover in Perth. But it was
- 23:50Speaker 2: the British Grand Prix, British Motorcycle Grand Prix. It was
- 23:54Speaker 2: typically a British Motorcycle Grand Prix as well because yet
- 23:56Speaker 2: again not a repeat winner.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Yes, but a lot of action.
- 24:00Speaker 2: It was NonStop, a lot to think about, a lot
- 24:01Speaker 2: to talk about. What were your take a love.
- 24:03Speaker 1: This is one of the most bizarre streaks in world
- 24:06Speaker 1: sport at this point. So Marco Betzeki wins that race
- 24:09Speaker 1: for a Prillia on Sunday night Australia. At the time,
- 24:11Speaker 1: that is the eleventh different rider to win the past
- 24:15Speaker 1: eleven British Motorcycle Grand Prix. It makes absolutely no sense
- 24:19Speaker 1: and coming into the weekend you would have thought, well,
- 24:21Speaker 1: surely this is the year that this gets overturned because
- 24:25Speaker 1: Aprillia hasn't really been anywhere this year, but Zaki joined
- 24:27Speaker 1: them at the start of this season hasn't been great.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Aprilia has been in the news for other headlines, with
- 24:33Speaker 1: Jorge Martin trying to get out of a Prillia having
- 24:35Speaker 1: not even completed a single race distance for them.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Yet I wonder what he was thinking.
- 24:40Speaker 1: And so there's all this going on in the background
- 24:43Speaker 1: and then it's tenth on the grid. It was a
- 24:46Speaker 1: bizarre race wind but completely in character for motor GP
- 24:50Speaker 1: at this particular circuit, and it's funny Silverstone and that
- 24:53Speaker 1: it's a great layout for bikes with the high, high
- 24:56Speaker 1: speed sweeping corners. It's a bit of a long lap.
- 24:59Speaker 1: It's the longest lap motor GP, and I think whenever
- 25:01Speaker 1: you get motor GP laps that are starting to fall
- 25:03Speaker 1: into the two minute range, it's a little bit too long.
- 25:05Speaker 1: And you see it at the tracks where circuit in
- 25:07Speaker 1: the America is where F one goes. Silverston obviously met
- 25:09Speaker 1: British Grand Prix for F one, but as a spectacle,
- 25:13Speaker 1: this was the earliest this race has been held ever
- 25:16Speaker 1: since it's been at Silvers and it was in May.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Normally it's in August September. It was cold, so you're
- 25:20Speaker 1: talking fifteen degree ambients barely twenty five degree track temps.
- 25:25Speaker 1: It completely changed the way this race was won and
- 25:29Speaker 1: it was all about being on the correct tire, probably
- 25:32Speaker 1: the atypical tire at the right time. You needed to
- 25:35Speaker 1: be on a soft front tier here because it was frankly,
- 25:38Speaker 1: it was too cold for anything harder than that. But
- 25:40Speaker 1: then you also had to live with the fact that
- 25:41Speaker 1: that soft front tire is probably going to go off
- 25:43Speaker 1: towards the end of the race. So you had this
- 25:45Speaker 1: real catamouse strategic race going on. Fantastic win for Btzeki,
- 25:50Speaker 1: but Fabio Quascerero and Yamaha the hardest of hard luck stories.
- 25:55Speaker 1: If anyone ever doubted this guy as an absolute top
- 25:57Speaker 1: liner in Motor GP three straight pole position as Yamaha
- 26:01Speaker 1: is starting to ascend again, that race was done. He
- 26:04Speaker 1: had a four and a half second lead twelve laps
- 26:06Speaker 1: into a nineteen lap race and was doing it with
- 26:08Speaker 1: a league in the air, and of all the things
- 26:10Speaker 1: to happen, rear ride high device gets stuck, can't disengage it,
- 26:15Speaker 1: and he has not won a race since midpoint of
- 26:17Speaker 1: twenty twenty two, and there's been a lot of reasons
- 26:20Speaker 1: for that that haven't been him. And so to see
- 26:22Speaker 1: him ride on the cusp of breaking that drought and
- 26:25Speaker 1: then having that taken away from him, Look, he was
- 26:28Speaker 1: absolutely devastated, as you could imagine. But I think if
- 26:31Speaker 1: anyone wondered where this guy sits in the top line
- 26:34Speaker 1: of motor GP riders on the current grid. He is
- 26:37Speaker 1: right up there that the Amaha project is really coming
- 26:39Speaker 1: along At the moment he will be in winning positions again.
- 26:42Speaker 1: But for a weekend that he dominated that race on
- 26:45Speaker 1: Sunday deserve far better. But it was just another subplot
- 26:49Speaker 1: in I think motor GP only does crazy races at
- 26:52Speaker 1: the moment. It seems that, you know, we're talking about
- 26:53Speaker 1: France last week with jons Arko winning every second race
- 26:57Speaker 1: seems to be completely nuts at the moment. It's great TV, yeah,
- 27:00Speaker 1: but a bit of variety at the front end of
- 27:01Speaker 1: the championship and I'm here for it.
- 27:03Speaker 3: Yes. Well, I was a very exciting point just before
- 27:05Speaker 3: he crashed, I suppose, but there were.
- 27:07Speaker 1: No de Caffies on the podium well, and because we
- 27:09Speaker 1: had a restart and race. I think that was part
- 27:11Speaker 1: of what I was saying before about being on the
- 27:13Speaker 1: correct tie there, because we had a race that was
- 27:15Speaker 1: abandoned on the second lap after we had both Marquez
- 27:17Speaker 1: brothers down in the first two laps and then a
- 27:20Speaker 1: bike on fire and oil all over the track in
- 27:23Speaker 1: the last couple of corners. That prompted the red flag,
- 27:25Speaker 1: so the Markeu's brothers effectively got to do over little
- 27:27Speaker 1: known ruling motor GP. If there is a red flag
- 27:29Speaker 1: within the first three laps, all riders can take the restart,
- 27:32Speaker 1: and so that's something a lot of people were saying,
- 27:34Speaker 1: why these guys back in the race like anyone that
- 27:36Speaker 1: had crashed out in those first two laps, and there
- 27:38Speaker 1: were a few of them, They effectively got a hard reset.
- 27:41Speaker 1: So you know, Mark Marquez actually extended his championship lead
- 27:44Speaker 1: through all of the silliness on Sunday at Silvestone admitted
- 27:47Speaker 1: afterwards he got very very lucky, finished third. Not a
- 27:50Speaker 1: particularly good weekend for him, but these are the weekends
- 27:52Speaker 1: where you just stack points relative to your rivals and
- 27:55Speaker 1: they all count towards the end of the year. But
- 27:57Speaker 1: suitably bonkers at Silveston and a very enjoyable Yes, sales man,
- 28:00Speaker 1: as ya as you say, this year reliably has been.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Yes, it is very exciting.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Let me very briefly engage your interests before we wrap
- 28:08Speaker 2: this one up, because it wasn't a supercars on the weekend,
- 28:10Speaker 2: but there was news that there will be two races
- 28:11Speaker 2: in New Zealand for the international expansion.
- 28:14Speaker 3: We consider New Zealand international. Of course it is a
- 28:16Speaker 3: different country.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Continues and it sounds like it will be back to
- 28:21Speaker 2: It will be a double headed they will be obviously
- 28:22Speaker 2: right alongside each other, because why would you go all
- 28:24Speaker 2: the way there to come back and go back and
- 28:25Speaker 2: go back again.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Yes, but it sounds like it will be.
- 28:28Speaker 2: It's being billed by ceoshanaw it as a fortnight two
- 28:31Speaker 2: weeks of supercars mayhem on the North Island and the
- 28:34Speaker 2: South Island. So we're looking at probably consecutive weekends, which
- 28:37Speaker 2: would be very exciting. Doesn't normally happen in supercars. I'll
- 28:40Speaker 2: be interested to say, well, first of all the response,
- 28:42Speaker 2: I mean, this is now a nationwide thing for New Zealand.
- 28:45Speaker 3: Both islands are covered. But also the.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Response in how that back to back is handled, because,
- 28:50Speaker 2: like I say, supercars doesn't do it that often. No,
- 28:53Speaker 2: what's that going to mean from momentum? If we're going
- 28:55Speaker 2: to have the same race formats next year, that's six
- 28:57Speaker 2: races in it'll be less than it'd be about eight days.
- 29:00Speaker 2: I suppose it's a lot of racing in a few days.
- 29:02Speaker 2: How are you bounced back? What if there's a big crash,
- 29:04Speaker 2: you're very far away from home in New Zealand, especially
- 29:06Speaker 2: if the cars are all being taken by boat.
- 29:08Speaker 3: Again, like logistically is very interesting.
- 29:11Speaker 2: It's great for New Zealand, and I think it's great
- 29:13Speaker 2: for supercars because while there's been a lot of talk
- 29:15Speaker 2: in the last few years, let's say about really sending
- 29:19Speaker 2: it overseas to Asia whatever, I think we're going to
- 29:22Speaker 2: expand anywhere, first, it's got to be in New Zealand.
- 29:23Speaker 3: The fan base is pretty big there.
- 29:24Speaker 2: We've got plenty of kiwee drivers, Matt pain foremost among
- 29:28Speaker 2: them at the moment. Great legacy obviously New Zealand's well,
- 29:31Speaker 2: great history in New Zealand.
- 29:33Speaker 3: They needed more than one.
- 29:34Speaker 2: They deserved more than one race, and it's really great
- 29:36Speaker 2: that this has now come about and it's going to
- 29:38Speaker 2: be I think a really interesting little experiment to be
- 29:42Speaker 2: racing that much overseas, all in one block, all in
- 29:44Speaker 2: such a short period of time.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I like it from the perspective of the Aussie fans
- 29:47Speaker 1: in the air, you were thinking of potentially going over
- 29:50Speaker 1: to see an international race, and that was one of
- 29:52Speaker 1: those things. Look, it's only just that weekend. Can I
- 29:54Speaker 1: justify the cost. You can go over there and lock
- 29:56Speaker 1: into this festival. It's going to be over there for
- 29:58Speaker 1: a couple of weeksbsolutely justify the span. It'd be really
- 30:02Speaker 1: interesting to see what the Australian fan contingent that goes
- 30:04Speaker 1: over to see this, because that's now a significant carrot.
- 30:07Speaker 1: See two different parts of the country, two different racetracks
- 30:10Speaker 1: within a ten day period. It's a lot of racing
- 30:12Speaker 1: to enjoy. I could see there being quite a tourist boonsh.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely topor obviously already touristy. And then christ Church
- 30:19Speaker 2: continues to rebuild. I guess after the earthquakes. I was
- 30:21Speaker 2: there only last year. I think beautiful part of the world.
- 30:23Speaker 2: I mean New Zealand is part of the world, but
- 30:25Speaker 2: christ Church in that South Island area particularly so tracks
- 30:29Speaker 2: right near christ Church, so I think it's only fifteen
- 30:31Speaker 2: kilmeters away or something like that, very close.
- 30:33Speaker 3: I would be a great trip. Now you got me thinking,
- 30:35Speaker 3: maybe do you think about going to New Zealand?
- 30:37Speaker 1: Maybe you should go hit talk on the road.
- 30:39Speaker 3: I look, Shannon's want to support it. I'm all for it.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Let's trap this one up.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Matt with a crystal ball by complete Home filtration in
- 30:50Speaker 2: the middle of an F one triple header. A bag
- 30:51Speaker 2: of JP races are flowing now, supercars not trying away?
- 30:54Speaker 3: What are you thinking?
- 30:55Speaker 1: I'm going to get a little bit naughty here. My
- 30:59Speaker 1: crystal ball tells me that Isaac Hajar is going to
- 31:02Speaker 1: be mentioned as a Red Bull racing driver gossip very
- 31:05Speaker 1: very very soon, and all jokes aside because he's performing
- 31:09Speaker 1: were Lee Lawson didn't and Yuki Sonoda isn't. Isaac Hajar
- 31:13Speaker 1: has massively surprised me this year in that I thought,
- 31:16Speaker 1: of all the rookies this year, he was the one
- 31:18Speaker 1: that was probably going to have the most crash damage
- 31:20Speaker 1: and was going to be the most erratic. He's been.
- 31:22Speaker 1: He's ticked every box for me. He's been very very good,
- 31:26Speaker 1: surprisingly calm, taken every opportunity and yes, we talked about
- 31:30Speaker 1: the Monaco confluence of circumstances, but he was there to
- 31:34Speaker 1: be the beneficiary of that strategy. And look, who on
- 31:38Speaker 1: earth knows what's going on with Red Bull second driver?
- 31:40Speaker 1: Do they know they've got a second driver? Do they
- 31:42Speaker 1: even care they've got a second driver? But right now,
- 31:44Speaker 1: of the three other Red Bull back drivers on the grid,
- 31:47Speaker 1: he seems to me to be the most qualified to
- 31:49Speaker 1: be Max Fastavan's teammate, which is also a poison chalice,
- 31:51Speaker 1: so you've got to be careful what you wish for.
- 31:53Speaker 1: But I think very soon we're going to see some
- 31:55Speaker 1: serious conversations about Hajar potentially being in that car because
- 31:58Speaker 1: quite frankly, the two guys that have been in it
- 32:00Speaker 1: this year, I'm not delivering.
- 32:01Speaker 2: I mean, this is such a big talking point, I
- 32:04Speaker 2: can't complete it right back, no point. But all I
- 32:07Speaker 2: would say is that we were saying the same thing
- 32:09Speaker 2: about Yuki Sanoda about a month ago when he was
- 32:11Speaker 2: at racing points. So I think the problems are really
- 32:14Speaker 2: big at Red Bull Racing. I'm going to stick with
- 32:15Speaker 2: the Red Bull Racing for my prediction. Something we haven't
- 32:17Speaker 2: talked about this week, but we will debrief next week
- 32:20Speaker 2: is that there are some rule changes coming or all
- 32:21Speaker 2: the reinterpretations coming this weekend to the flexibility of front wings.
- 32:25Speaker 2: All very exciting and technical, But Red Bull Racing has
- 32:28Speaker 2: been telling us or hinting non stop for a month
- 32:31Speaker 2: that this is the thing, this is what's going to
- 32:33Speaker 2: break this Championshi Open.
- 32:34Speaker 3: They're going to be back after this rule change.
- 32:37Speaker 2: It brings McLaren back more than it brings back any
- 32:39Speaker 2: other team. I'm going to say McLaren's going to win
- 32:42Speaker 2: by sixty seconds, not sixty seconds. They're going to win comfortably,
- 32:45Speaker 2: and then Red Bull Racing is going to have to
- 32:46Speaker 2: come up with some new reasons as to why the
- 32:48Speaker 2: car is not quite there.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Well, we mentioned before that Catalonia is this great litmus
- 32:52Speaker 1: test of what Formula one car can do. We often
- 32:54Speaker 1: get really dominant wins there. You think back in the
- 32:57Speaker 1: Mercedes domination, they would absolutely demolish everybody. Whichever team has
- 33:01Speaker 1: got the car in the sweet spot. It tends to
- 33:03Speaker 1: be magnified at this particular track. So if McLaren, even
- 33:07Speaker 1: with this new technical directive, come out and demolish everyone
- 33:10Speaker 1: this weekend, then Christian Horner's press debrief will be a
- 33:13Speaker 1: manage reviewing.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Go think yeah, I think so. I'm looking forward to it.
- 33:16Speaker 2: That's all the time. We have a pit talk today.
