- 0:05Hello and welcome to another episode of Abby
- 0:08the Podcast Lady and we are once again podcasting
- 0:11at the lake because it is summer. And this is
- 0:15where I'm spending pretty much every second of
- 0:17free time that I possibly have. Not just because,
- 0:19you know, it's the lake and it's summer and we
- 0:21want to be outside and enjoying the nice weather
- 0:23in Minnesota for the very few months that we
- 0:26have it, but because the internet is way better
- 0:28here than it is at my house. And I can not for
- 0:31the life of me figure out why I live in a highly
- 0:34populated area with the worst internet on the
- 0:37planet. It's just baffling to me. So I am working
- 0:39from the lake today and I needed to record a
- 0:41couple of podcast episodes. So I figured we would
- 0:43set up the camera and do just that. And the one
- 0:46thing I really wanted to touch on for today's
- 0:48podcast episode is when to ask for help with
- 0:51your podcasts. Like when do you like meet that
- 0:53threshold of needing someone else to step in
- 0:55and get something done for you? Because I'm kind
- 0:57of reaching that with a different project. I
- 0:59have going on right now. I am launching my first
- 1:01full online coaching program. I have done online
- 1:05courses in the past, but this one is like my
- 1:07first full official coaching program launch.
- 1:10It's bet on your podcast and I'm really excited
- 1:13for it, but it is so much work. That's what they
- 1:16don't tell you about launching an online coaching
- 1:18program is that it is a lot of work to get it
- 1:22up and running. If you're not doing it through
- 1:23something like Udemy or school, or there's like
- 1:27other online coaching. where you basically just
- 1:30upload your content to it and they kind of help
- 1:32you with the SEO for it and whatnot. But I'm
- 1:33doing everything from scratch myself. So I own
- 1:36it and I own my content. And it is not only create
- 1:39the coaching program, which is for me a 21 part
- 1:43video series that will be walking people through
- 1:46everything from setting up your podcast, creating
- 1:48concept, creating cover art. I have tutorials
- 1:50on editing. I have tutorials on setting up your
- 1:53RSS feed. Like all those get individual videos.
- 1:55So I had to write the scripts, record it edit
- 1:58it and now comes what i consider to be the hard
- 2:01work which is building the website setting up
- 2:03the email list setting up the funnels for that
- 2:06it's a lot there is so much that goes into creating
- 2:09an online course that i feel like people don't
- 2:11tell you about i feel like we see a lot of internet
- 2:13gurus going i created this online course in this
- 2:16online community and i'm making tens of thousands
- 2:18of dollars a month doing it it's like girl that's
- 2:21a lot of work that goes into it on the front
- 2:23end before you even see a penny of that there's
- 2:25a lot of money that goes into it before you even
- 2:27see a return on that investment. So that's kind
- 2:29of what I'm going through right now with the
- 2:31bet on your podcast program. I initially wanted
- 2:33it launched by August and it's looking like maybe
- 2:36more of a mid August, probably around my birthday,
- 2:38which is August 9th of this coming out. So putting
- 2:41in the work, getting it done. But what I'm realizing
- 2:43is that is not my zone of genius. My zone of
- 2:47genius is podcast creation. My zone of genius
- 2:49is helping people with their shows, creating
- 2:52the content, editing the shows, making the videos,
- 2:55getting it on RF. CSS, writing show notes, helping
- 2:57draft blogs. That's what I'm good at. I can do
- 3:00that pretty much in my sleep at this point. That
- 3:02is where I thrive. But building websites, setting
- 3:05up email funnels, setting up email campaigns,
- 3:07that is not my zone of genius. And nor do I want
- 3:10it to be. That's just not what lights my soul
- 3:13on fire. Am I capable of learning it? Am I capable
- 3:15of doing it? Yes. Will it be done to the absolute
- 3:17highest level that I can do? Yes. Is that someone
- 3:20else's highest level of what they can do? Maybe,
- 3:23probably. I don't know. Depends on the person.
- 3:25So kind of what I'm getting at here is I've reached
- 3:27the point in building out this online course
- 3:30where I have kind of tapped all of my own resources.
- 3:33I did the parts that I was really good at, which
- 3:36is creating the courses and the content and the
- 3:39videos and the scripts and the tutorials. Like,
- 3:41great, I can do that. No problem. That is easy
- 3:44to me. That comes very naturally. I know what
- 3:46I'm talking about. I'm the expert in that area.
- 3:48But I am really struggling with the website email
- 3:52campaign portion. And it's like, when? do I need
- 3:55to ask for help? And so I wanted to run that
- 3:57through the filter of you creating your own podcast
- 3:59and realizing when do I need to ask for help
- 4:02with this? Because it's just not what I know.
- 4:05It's not what I do. I'm not familiar with this.
- 4:08And that's not to say you're not capable of becoming
- 4:10a genius in that aspect. That's not to say that's
- 4:13not ever going to be your zone of genius. You
- 4:15can definitely learn it. We all start somewhere.
- 4:17We're all beginners at something at some point.
- 4:19Even I was a beginner podcaster at some point,
- 4:22just kind of floundering and figuring it. out
- 4:24on my own. And now it's like back on my hand,
- 4:26second nature. So we all kind of reached that
- 4:28threshold of like, how much am I actually capable
- 4:30of? And then what's really sad is sometimes we
- 4:34get to the point of like a roadblock that we
- 4:36can't get past. And we're like, well, I'm just
- 4:38going to give up. I'm just going to throw in
- 4:39the towel. I can't get any further than this
- 4:41and I'm quitting. And that's the last thing I
- 4:43want you to do is actually quit making your podcast
- 4:45because you don't know what you're doing, how
- 4:47to get past that hurdle, that sort of thing.
- 4:49So when do you ask for help? When you hit that
- 4:51threshold, when you feel like you're gonna give
- 4:53up because you don't know how to do the next
- 4:56step or you don't even know where to find how
- 4:57to do the next step that is the point where you
- 4:59need to reach out to someone and say hey have
- 5:01you been through this before or do you know someone
- 5:03who's done this before that can help me and maybe
- 5:05pay for some like online one -on -one coaching
- 5:08sessions or maybe pay for an online course or
- 5:11heck even hire them to do something for you so
- 5:14you don't have to that's where I come in with
- 5:16a lot of my clients I like to say I let my podcast
- 5:19clients do I think all parts of podcasting is
- 5:22the fun part but the fun part that everyone thinks
- 5:24podcasting is which is sitting down with a microphone
- 5:26and talking for an extended period of time and
- 5:29then it's just a podcast and it's out in the
- 5:31world there's actually a lot of back -end work
- 5:33that goes into it which includes editing and
- 5:36content creation and show notes and distribution
- 5:38and there's just so much that goes into it that
- 5:40is kind of unseen in the podcasting world that
- 5:43people hit roadblocks with like they can sit
- 5:45down and record on their phone with a microphone
- 5:47and say yep i made a podcast now what they don't
- 5:50know to go to rs sss .com. They don't know how
- 5:52to set up that feed. They don't know how to set
- 5:54up their distribution. They don't know how to
- 5:56write show notes. They don't know how to repurpose
- 5:58their podcast into marketing assets for their
- 6:00business. And that's what I do for them. And
- 6:02that is like where I come in and help. And all
- 6:04of my clients have expressed to me how grateful
- 6:06they are to have me in their corner. A lot of
- 6:09them have said, I would not be doing this if
- 6:11it wasn't for you helping me through the parts
- 6:13that I don't know how to do and don't want to
- 6:16learn how to do. And I think that's the biggest
- 6:18thing when it comes to asking for help. Is it
- 6:20something you actually want to learn how to do
- 6:22successfully? Or is it something that you don't
- 6:25even have any interest or desire to learn how
- 6:27to do? My client, Liz, we've been working on
- 6:29her podcast for many, many years now. And from
- 6:32day one, she's like, I want to do this, but I
- 6:34don't want to learn how to do the parts that
- 6:36you love to do. She's like, I have no desire
- 6:38to learn how to edit something. I have no desire
- 6:40to create the content that goes with it. It's
- 6:42just not her thing, but she loves making her
- 6:45podcast. She loves recording it. She loves interviewing
- 6:47people. She loves sharing what she knows and
- 6:49sharing her. knowledge with the world. She just
- 6:51has no desire to actually like do any of the
- 6:53elements to create the show, which is fine. And
- 6:56knowing that is her threshold of like that's
- 6:58where she would stop herself if there was no
- 7:00help. Like that's when you know to ask for help.
- 7:02It's with the things that you don't know how
- 7:04to do and don't want to learn how to do. That's
- 7:07when you find someone else to do it for you.
- 7:09Now when it comes to me with setting up this
- 7:10coaching program, is it something I actually
- 7:12kind of want to learn how to do? Honestly, yeah,
- 7:15because I like learning and this is kind of in
- 7:17my realm of things. that I seem to naturally
- 7:20latch onto. I struggle with a lot of these things
- 7:23at first, but once I kind of have the bare bones,
- 7:25the basics of how to do it, I'm actually very
- 7:27comfortable doing it. And then in turn, taking
- 7:29what I learned and helping other people do it
- 7:31as well. So this is something that I don't see
- 7:34myself outsourcing at the moment. It's something
- 7:36that I see myself kind of getting in the mud,
- 7:39getting my hands dirty, learning how to do it,
- 7:41doing it probably wrong a few times before it
- 7:44ends up being right. And I'm okay with that.
- 7:46Is it gonna take more time? and more energy and
- 7:49more effort and maybe even more resources because
- 7:52I'm so strapped for time right now? Probably,
- 7:54but it's not something I have the urge to totally
- 7:57offload and not learn how to do. So I don't see
- 8:00myself offloading this task. If that changes,
- 8:03I am more than willing to let you know. I am
- 8:06very open and honest about everything I do. So
- 8:08that is currently where I'm at with that. So
- 8:10when it comes to you and your podcast and you're
- 8:11hitting that roadblock and you don't know what
- 8:13the next steps are, ask yourself the question,
- 8:15am I willing to learn how? to do this and do
- 8:18it poorly at first or do I just not want to learn
- 8:20this at all is this something you're comfortable
- 8:22handing off to someone else and just having it
- 8:24done for you I think that's what the real like
- 8:26test is when it comes to knowing whether or not
- 8:29to ask for help in your podcasting journey and
- 8:31as always if you are at that point you're like
- 8:34I don't know what the next step is I don't know
- 8:36what to do I don't know what I'm doing reach
- 8:38out to me that's what I'm here for that's what
- 8:40I offer is you can either set up a call to pick
- 8:42my brain and ask me any question you have that's
- 8:45really great for hitting like really specific
- 8:47roadblocks because I usually can help you pass
- 8:49them instantly in that sort of situation. So
- 8:51be sure to set up a pick my brain call with me
- 8:53and we'll get you past that roadblock and get
- 8:55you moved on to the next step. I also, like I
- 8:58said, have this online coaching program coming,
- 9:00which is going to walk you through start to finish
- 9:02how to start your podcast and get it going through
- 9:05episode seven because episode seven is the part
- 9:08where most podcasters usually fall off by. So
- 9:10we're going to try to get you past there. It's
- 9:12called bet on your podcast. That'll be coming
- 9:13soon. And yeah, there's also other ways to work
- 9:16with me if you want me to just handle everything
- 9:18for you that's also an option so if you are hitting
- 9:20that roadblock and you're asking yourself I don't
- 9:23know what to do next I don't know if I should
- 9:24ask for help or not reach out to me we'll work
- 9:26through it together and in the meantime just
- 9:28keep trying and don't be afraid to have to fail
- 9:31or redo something or learn a new skill and do
- 9:33it poorly at first because that's how we all
- 9:35learn and grow and get better at what we're doing
- 9:37so I will catch you in the next episode in the
- 9:40meantime please leave a five -star rating and
- 9:42review on this podcast it helps a ton share it
- 9:44with a who might also be hitting a roadblock
- 9:47in either their podcast or just what they're
- 9:49doing in life. And I will see you next week.
