- 0:09Speaker 1: You're listening to a podcast from Newstalks be follow this
- 0:13Speaker 1: and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
- 0:16Speaker 2: There's a form of economic nimbiism that's going on in
- 0:19Speaker 2: this country. You've probably noticed it too. If we want
- 0:22Speaker 2: to get ahead, surely we are all aware that there
- 0:26Speaker 2: must be trade offs. There's no business, no growth, no
- 0:30Speaker 2: economic miracle that comes about without a cost to someone somewhere.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Whether it's intensive agriculture that can have an effect on
- 0:37Speaker 2: the environment, whether it's water to run the data centers
- 0:41Speaker 2: that power your smartphones. Every success costs you something. Generally,
- 0:46Speaker 2: the trick is to be reasonable, take risks, mitigate them,
- 0:49Speaker 2: or just be willing to wear the costs. The problem
- 0:52Speaker 2: we have, I don't think is necessarily a lack of
- 0:54Speaker 2: opportunities of wherewithal or enthusiasm, not even in many cases investment.
- 1:01Speaker 2: It's just an Otargo just recently beautiful place, stunning, central Otago.
- 1:05Speaker 2: There's a gold mine permit that's been issued there. You
- 1:07Speaker 2: might have said that in the news. Sam Neil was
- 1:10Speaker 2: dead against the project when I was down there, as
- 1:13Speaker 2: are many others. You know, there's opposition, there's legal challenges.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Fair enough, you know they've got houses in the area,
- 1:18Speaker 2: worried about trucks on the road, then what it looks like.
- 1:22Speaker 2: But it's also an area that would be serviced by
- 1:24Speaker 2: this brand new hospital that Dunedin is getting. Half the
- 1:28Speaker 2: town's buildings by the way, and Otaga wouldn't be there
- 1:31Speaker 2: to begin with if it's not for gold mining. So
- 1:35Speaker 2: the permits issued the rest us with fast track whatever.
- 1:38Speaker 2: But how are you going to pay for that hospital?
- 1:40Speaker 2: How are you going to pay for that hospital? Wanaka
- 1:43Speaker 2: said no to a McDonald's in part due to concerns
- 1:46Speaker 2: about healthy eating. Residents objected to a solar farm in
- 1:49Speaker 2: part because of something called lunar reflection, that the moonlight
- 1:53Speaker 2: might reflect off a solar panel like it would I
- 1:56Speaker 2: don't know a lake or an ocean. I mean, come on,
- 2:00Speaker 2: are we clutching its straws here or what. It's all
- 2:03Speaker 2: well and good, but if we want stuff like new hospitals,
- 2:07Speaker 2: highways and potholes fixed, you have to pay for them somehow.
- 2:11Speaker 2: And there's a little too much economic nimbiism going on
- 2:14Speaker 2: at the moment, I think for anyone to be seriously
- 2:16Speaker 2: complaining about the state of things.
