- 1:27Speaker 2: They've boasted they won't be taken alive. Your job, get them.
- 1:35Speaker 3: In Fatima, the difference is quality. Yes, in Fatima, the
- 1:40Speaker 3: difference is quality. Prove it yourself today. Compare Fatima with

- 2:10Speaker 5: Definitely the best quality in its class. but the same
- 2:13Speaker 5: price as the cigarette you are now smoking.

- 2:20Speaker 2: king-size cigarettes.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Dragnet, the documented drama of an actual crime.
- 2:31Speaker 3: For the next 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los
- 2:34Speaker 3: Angeles Police Department, you will travel step by step on
- 2:38Speaker 3: the side of the law through an actual case transcribed from.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Official police files.
- 2:43Speaker 3: From beginning to end, from crime to punishment, Dragnet is
- 2:47Speaker 3: the story of your police force in action.
- 2:54Speaker 6: It was Wednesday, October 6th. It was cloudy in Los Angeles.
- 2:57Speaker 6: We were working the day watch out of robbery detail.
- 2:59Speaker 6: My partner's Ed Jacobs. The boss is Captain Didion. My
- 3:01Speaker 6: name's Friday. We were on the way out from the office,
- 3:04Speaker 6: and it was 2.40 p.m. when we got to Kesterson Boulevard.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Number 1256.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Sounds like she's having a party, huh?
- 3:12Speaker 6: Yeah. Try it again, huh? Maybe they can't hear it. Mm-hmm. Yes?
- 3:19Speaker 6: Police officers, ma'am. You Ruth Thompson?
- 3:20Speaker 5: Yes, that's right. What is it?
- 3:22Speaker 6: My name's Friday. This is my partner, Sergeant Jacob. Central robbery.
- 3:24Speaker 6: We'd like to talk to you a few minutes if
- 3:25Speaker 6: we could.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Well, I have a party going on right now. A
- 3:27Speaker 5: few of my friends are over. What'd you want, Sergeant?
- 3:29Speaker 4: About an Andy Powell, Miss Thompson. I understand you know him?
- 3:32Speaker 5: I did know him, yes. I haven't seen him for
- 3:34Speaker 5: a long time. Three or four years anyway.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Mind if we ask a few questions about him? It
- 3:37Speaker 4: won't take long.
- 3:38Speaker 6: All right.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Come in, please.
- 3:40Speaker 6: Thank you. We're sorry to disturb you, ma'am. It's pretty
- 3:44Speaker 6: important or we wouldn't hold you up.
- 3:45Speaker 5: It's all right. Down the hall here.
- 3:47Speaker 6: All right.
- 3:48Speaker 5: We can talk in the kitchen if you don't mind.
- 3:49Speaker 5: It's my girlfriend's birthday today, so I'd be nice to
- 3:51Speaker 5: have a little party for her.
- 3:52Speaker 6: Oh, I see.
- 3:56Speaker 5: Chair there, if you like. Oh, here, let me wipe
- 3:58Speaker 5: it off. He spilled a drink on her. Probably Danny.
- 4:01Speaker 6: He spilled a drink.
- 4:01Speaker 4: I suppose you know about Andy Powell, Miss Thompson, what
- 4:03Speaker 4: happened this morning?
- 4:04Speaker 6: What's that?
- 4:05Speaker 4: About Andy Powell. You heard what happened this morning?
- 4:07Speaker 5: Just what I read in the morning paper. They said
- 4:09Speaker 5: he broke out of San Quentin. Another man with him. True, then?
- 4:12Speaker 5: He did break out?
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yes, ma'am.
- 4:14Speaker 6: That's the information we have. There's an all-points bulletin out
- 4:16Speaker 6: on him.
- 4:17Speaker 5: Well, I don't want to get involved in it. It's
- 4:18Speaker 5: none of my business, and he doesn't mean anything to me.
- 4:20Speaker 6: Well, at the time he was set up, you were
- 4:22Speaker 6: engaged to Powell, is that right?
- 4:24Speaker 5: Yes, but that was before he got into trouble, before
- 4:26Speaker 5: he went to San Quentin. I saw him after the trial.
- 4:28Speaker 5: I told him how I felt about it. I told
- 4:30Speaker 5: him it wasn't any use.
- 4:30Speaker 4: You mean you called it off, that is?
- 4:31Speaker 5: There wasn't much else to do. It was robbery, five
- 4:34Speaker 5: years to life. It wasn't the first time either. Andy
- 4:37Speaker 5: knew it would be a long time, so die. Really,
- 4:39Speaker 5: I had to tell him. I had to call it off.
- 4:41Speaker 6: We understand you were on Powell's correspondence list while he
- 4:43Speaker 6: was up at Quentin. You wrote to him, did you?
- 4:45Speaker 5: Yes, the first couple of months. We haven't written lately, though.
- 4:48Speaker 5: There wasn't any point to it, no point at all.
- 4:49Speaker 6: Well, when was the last time you heard from Powell,
- 4:52Speaker 6: Miss Thompson? The last time you wrote to him?
- 4:53Speaker 5: Oh, eight or ten months, at least that. As I say,
- 4:57Speaker 5: there wasn't much sense in going on. Andy knew he
- 4:59Speaker 5: was in there for a long time. He couldn't expect
- 5:01Speaker 5: me to wait all that time. Matter of fact, he
- 5:03Speaker 5: said he didn't expect it. He told me that.
- 5:05Speaker 4: You been up to visit Powell recently, Miss Thompson?
- 5:07Speaker 5: No, no, I haven't.
- 5:08Speaker 6: Well, then you haven't seen him since he went up
- 5:10Speaker 6: to Quentin. You'll swear to that?
- 5:11Speaker 5: Why do I have to swear to it? I already
- 5:13Speaker 5: told you, Andy, he doesn't mean anything to me. It
- 5:15Speaker 5: didn't make sense. It's all over. I'm not even a relative.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Why do I have to swear to anything?
- 5:19Speaker 4: You haven't seen Powell since he went up to Quentin,
- 5:20Speaker 4: is that right?
- 5:23Speaker 6: Miss Thompson, is that right?
- 5:24Speaker 5: What if I saw him or if I didn't see him?
- 5:26Speaker 5: What difference does it make? It's none of my business.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Well, did you see him, Miss Thompson?
- 5:29Speaker 5: What difference does it make? I don't have anything to
- 5:31Speaker 5: do with him. He doesn't mean anything to me. I
- 5:33Speaker 5: told you.
- 5:34Speaker 6: Did you see him?
- 5:36Speaker 5: This morning.
- 5:37Speaker 6: When?
- 5:38Speaker 5: Late this morning, about 10.30.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Was he alone?
- 5:40Speaker 5: No, another man was with him.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Who was the other man you recognized?
- 5:43Speaker 5: Bert Selby. That's the way he introduced him. He didn't
- 5:45Speaker 5: try to hide it. Some fellow he broke out of
- 5:47Speaker 5: jail with.
- 5:47Speaker 6: What did they want? Why were they here?
- 5:49Speaker 5: Clothes, money. Looked like the devil. Both of them terrible.
- 5:52Speaker 6: What did you give them?
- 5:53Speaker 5: They asked for him. Not that silly. Didn't trust me
- 5:56Speaker 5: anymore and they trust you. And he had a knife.
- 5:58Speaker 5: I tried to tell him I didn't have any money.
- 6:00Speaker 5: He didn't believe me. He came at me with that knife.
- 6:02Speaker 5: I gave him the money.
- 6:03Speaker 6: How much?
- 6:04Speaker 5: About 17, 18 dollars. Some loose change. They emptied my purse.
- 6:07Speaker 5: They took it all.
- 6:08Speaker 6: Anything else?
- 6:09Speaker 5: Clothes. A couple of suits of my father's. He died
- 6:11Speaker 5: last year. They took his gun, too. I never thought
- 6:14Speaker 5: Andy would be that way. It was terrible.
- 6:16Speaker 4: What kind of a gun was it, Miss Thompson?
- 6:17Speaker 5: Colt revolver,. 38, I think. They took that and the
- 6:20Speaker 5: clothes and the money. It was about 10.30 this morning.
- 6:22Speaker 6: Malcolm, you didn't report that. You say you knew about
- 6:25Speaker 6: the escape. You knew they were wanted, didn't you?
- 6:27Speaker 5: Why should I? They warned me about it. They threatened me.
- 6:29Speaker 5: They said they'd come back and get me if I
- 6:31Speaker 5: told the police. Look, I don't want to get mixed
- 6:34Speaker 5: up in this. I'm engaged to a nice fellow now.
- 6:36Speaker 5: We want to get married. I don't want to get
- 6:37Speaker 5: mixed up in this. Andy Powell's nothing to me.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Did you watch the two men when they left the
- 6:41Speaker 4: house here? Did you notice if they drove off in
- 6:42Speaker 4: the car?
- 6:43Speaker 5: No, I didn't. I just shut the door and prayed
- 6:44Speaker 5: I was rid of them. Took my money, food, my
- 6:47Speaker 5: dad's clothes. Don't make it any tougher, huh? Please.
- 6:50Speaker 6: Well, it's not a question of that, ma'am. We have
- 6:51Speaker 6: to find them. We're going to need all the cooperation
- 6:53Speaker 6: we can get.
- 6:54Speaker 5: I told you everything I could, honestly. You said they'd
- 6:57Speaker 5: come back and kill me if I even talked to you.
- 6:58Speaker 5: I can't do any more. I sure hope you don't
- 7:01Speaker 5: find him.
- 7:02Speaker 4: How's that?
- 7:03Speaker 5: When Andy went out the door, it's the last thing
- 7:05Speaker 5: he said. He said if the cops ever found him,
- 7:07Speaker 5: there was going to be a fight. Terrible look on
- 7:09Speaker 5: his face.
- 7:09Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:10Speaker 5: He said he'd never take him alive.
- 7:16Speaker 6: The APB had come in a few minutes before 8
- 7:18Speaker 6: o'clock that morning. It was from the warden's office, San Quentin.
- 7:22Speaker 6: The two suspects had been assigned to an early morning
- 7:24Speaker 6: work detail at the penitentiary, and they were first reported
- 7:27Speaker 6: missing at the 7 a.m. count. Number one suspect was
- 7:31Speaker 6: Andrew A. Powell, WMA, 29 years, 5'9, 175 pounds, brown hair,
- 7:36Speaker 6: blue eyes, tan complexion. Suspect number two, Bertram O. Selby, WMA,
- 7:41Speaker 6: 31 years, 5'11, 160 pounds, blonde hair, gray eyes, tan complexion.
- 7:47Speaker 6: Both of them had long criminal records. Both of them
- 7:50Speaker 6: had been serving time for armed robbery. They'd used guns before.
- 7:53Speaker 6: We figured if they had to, they'd use them again.
- 7:56Speaker 6: Before we left Powell's ex-girlfriend, Ruth Thompson, we called the
- 7:59Speaker 6: office and arranged for a 24-hour stakeout on her home
- 8:02Speaker 6: in case the escaped prisoners returned. We also made arrangements
- 8:05Speaker 6: for a stakeout at the downtown restaurant where she was
- 8:08Speaker 6: employed as cashier. We passed along the information which the
- 8:11Speaker 6: Thompson girl had given us, and a broadcast and an
- 8:14Speaker 6: APB was gotten out on the suspects. 4.05 p.m., Ed
- 8:18Speaker 6: and I continued making the rounds of all unknown friends
- 8:20Speaker 6: and associates of the escaped prisoners. We failed to come
- 8:22Speaker 6: up with any more leads. 5.50 p.m., we went back
- 8:25Speaker 6: to the city hall.
- 8:29Speaker 4: Clouding up again, huh? Over there in the east?
- 8:31Speaker 6: Yeah, paper says rain tonight and tomorrow. We can sure
- 8:33Speaker 6: use it.
- 8:33Speaker 4: No, we can't.
- 8:34Speaker 6: What's the matter?
- 8:35Speaker 4: Haven't had a chance to get the shoemakers yet. Here,
- 8:39Speaker 4: look at that. hole in my shoe. I've been meaning
- 8:41Speaker 4: to get them half-sold. I keep forgetting.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:44Speaker 6: Don't tell me that's the only pair of shoes you got.
- 8:45Speaker 4: No, I got another pair at home. They're not comfortable, though.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Not broken in. There's trouble with this job. What do
- 8:50Speaker 4: you mean?
- 8:51Speaker 6: Shoes.
- 8:51Speaker 4: You get a new pair, start wearing them around. It
- 8:53Speaker 4: happens every time.
- 8:54Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 4: The sooner you get the tops broken in, the soles
- 8:56Speaker 4: wear out. It's a vicious circle.
- 8:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 9:01Speaker 5: Hi.
- 9:01Speaker 6: How's it work?
- 9:02Speaker 4: No, hi, Jess.
- 9:03Speaker 6: Anything in the book for us you don't?
- 9:04Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't think so. I'll check it.
- 9:06Speaker 4: All right. How'd your two make out?
- 9:08Speaker 6: Any luck? Oh, not too bad, Jess. We know Powell
- 9:10Speaker 6: and Selby were in town this morning. Good chance they're
- 9:12Speaker 6: still here. Any kickback on that last all points we
- 9:15Speaker 6: got out?
- 9:15Speaker 4: Nothing so far.
- 9:16Speaker 7: Gaffney and Ricketts are running down a couple of possibles
- 9:19Speaker 7: right now.
- 9:19Speaker 4: One of them might pan out. Nothing on the bookshelf.
- 9:21Speaker 4: We're clear.
- 9:22Speaker 7: Just saying, Ed, on this Powell and Selby thing, got
- 9:25Speaker 7: a couple of possibles we're checking on. Both calls came
- 9:27Speaker 7: in the last hour. One was a holdup, Olympic near Vermont.
- 9:30Speaker 7: Pawn shop there. Two men pulled it off, slugged the owner,
- 9:33Speaker 7: took clothes, money, 12-gauge shotgun. How about descriptions on them, Ed? Well,
- 9:37Speaker 7: they seem to be fairly close. When I got over
- 9:38Speaker 7: the phone, Gaffney and Ricketts are out talking to the victim.
- 9:41Speaker 7: They took mugs of Powell and Selby along, waiting for
- 9:43Speaker 7: their call back now.
- 9:44Speaker 4: You said you had two calls. What was the other one?
- 9:47Speaker 1: 2-11 and slugging out on Hollywood Boulevard just above Western.
- 9:49Speaker 1: A couple of thieves knocked over a dry goods store.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Some take clothes and money. Descriptions are pretty close there, too.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Hollywood division's covering. Waiting for their call back.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Do you want a smoke? No, thanks.
- 10:07Speaker 6: Thanks.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Thompson girl is the only one who had anything, huh?
- 10:12Speaker 4: None of the others could help you out? Yeah, that's
- 10:14Speaker 4: about the size of it. Apparently Powell doesn't have too
- 10:16Speaker 4: many connections in town. Selby has even less. No more
- 10:19Speaker 4: than a dozen names on that list, were there, Joe? Friends, relatives?
- 10:21Speaker 6: An even dozen. A couple of bars Powell was known
- 10:24Speaker 6: to hang out when he was in town. Checked them out, too. Nothing.
- 10:27Speaker 4: They sure made a beeline here after they broke quick.
- 10:29Speaker 4: It's a good 500-mile stretch. If they don't have the
- 10:32Speaker 4: connections here to help them, then what's the big attraction?
- 10:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:35Speaker 4: They could have some help lined up we don't know about.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Somebody to hide them out, keep them in groceries for
- 10:39Speaker 4: a while.
- 10:40Speaker 6: It's possible they're making a run for one of the
- 10:41Speaker 6: border towns, Tijuana, Mexicali. Maybe Powell figured on more help
- 10:45Speaker 6: from the Thompson girl. Clothes and money. Enough to get
- 10:48Speaker 6: him and Selby over into.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Mexico, huh?
- 10:49Speaker 4: She said all they got was $ 17. Had to cut
- 10:51Speaker 4: corners to make it on that.
- 10:55Speaker 6: Robbery, Gonzalez. Oh, yeah, Jack.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. You sure? Okay, fine. Thanks. Bye. Jack Ricketts.
- 11:06Speaker 7: Ian Gaffney just finished talking to the owner of the
- 11:08Speaker 7: pawn shop that was held up, the one on Olympic Wall.
- 11:10Speaker 7: They gave him a handful of mug shots to check.
- 11:12Speaker 7: He tabbed two of them, Powell and Selby.
- 11:14Speaker 6: 6.30 p.m. A supplementary broadcast and an APB was gotten
- 11:22Speaker 6: out on the two suspects, and the record bureau's photocopy
- 11:25Speaker 6: room turned out 2,000 copies of Powell's and Selby's mug
- 11:28Speaker 6: shot for distribution. At 9 p.m., a theater on Western
- 11:32Speaker 6: Avenue was robbed of $ 192. Powell and Selby were again
- 11:36Speaker 6: identified as the holdup men. The robbery victim, the manager
- 11:40Speaker 6: of the theater, said that both men were armed, one
- 11:42Speaker 6: with a. 38 revolver, the other with a sawed-off shotgun.
- 11:46Speaker 6: Neither the manager nor the two witnesses were able to
- 11:48Speaker 6: tell us how the thieves got away from the scene
- 11:50Speaker 6: of the crime, if they were on foot or if
- 11:52Speaker 6: they had a car. 11.20 p.m., a hot shot call
- 11:56Speaker 6: came through on a holdup at a liquor store in
- 11:58Speaker 6: Delicatessen down on South Central Avenue. For the third time
- 12:01Speaker 6: that night, Powell and Selby were identified from their mug
- 12:04Speaker 6: shots as the holdup men.
- 12:06Speaker 5: They'd used the.
- 12:06Speaker 6: Same weapons, the revolver that they'd taken from the Thompson
- 12:09Speaker 6: girls' home, and the shotgun that they picked up in
- 12:11Speaker 6: the robbery of the Olympic Boulevard pawn shop. Again, the
- 12:15Speaker 6: victims were unable to tell us how the suspects got away,
- 12:17Speaker 6: whether on foot or by car. Midnight, 1 a.m., there
- 12:22Speaker 6: were still no replies to supplementary broadcasts and bulletins which
- 12:25Speaker 6: had been gotten out. 1.25 a.m., another hotshot call came through,
- 12:29Speaker 6: this time on a holdup on a slugging at the
- 12:32Speaker 6: 2050 room, a small nightclub on West 9th Street. Ed
- 12:35Speaker 6: and I handled the call. For the fourth time, the
- 12:38Speaker 6: bandits were identified as Powell and Selby, and for the
- 12:41Speaker 6: fourth time, they'd made good their escape. We interviewed the
- 12:43Speaker 6: manager of the 2050 room, a Herman Saunders.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Quite a few people in here at the time of
- 12:49Speaker 4: the holdup, Mr. Saunders?
- 12:50Speaker 7: Yeah, good for a Thursday night. 30 or 40 anyway.
- 12:53Speaker 7: They sure left in a hurry. This is the second
- 12:54Speaker 7: time this year we've been knocked over. Insurance company isn't
- 12:56Speaker 7: going to like it too much.
- 12:57Speaker 6: Well, how much money did they take altogether, do you know?
- 12:59Speaker 4: A little less than 600 from the cash register.
- 13:01Speaker 7: Mostly currency. Some rolls of dimes and quarters. Got another
- 13:04Speaker 7: hundred and a half from my wallet.
- 13:06Speaker 4: That's about it. They didn't take any from the customers.
- 13:08Speaker 6: You're sure about that identification, are you? There's no chance
- 13:10Speaker 6: of a mistake there? I'm positive.
- 13:11Speaker 7: I'd know Andy Paul anywhere.
- 13:12Speaker 4: I should know him. Like I told you, he worked
- 13:14Speaker 4: for me a year and a half. I was here
- 13:15Speaker 4: at 2050? Yeah, he worked behind the bar.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Good man, too.
- 13:18Speaker 6: I don't get it at all. You mean why he
- 13:20Speaker 6: went bad? Well, yeah, that, too.
- 13:22Speaker 7: What I mean is if you're going to hold up
- 13:23Speaker 7: a place, you don't pick a joint where everybody knows you.
- 13:25Speaker 7: I spotted Annie as soon as I saw him at
- 13:27Speaker 7: the bar. So did a couple of the waiters.
- 13:28Speaker 6: He wasn't wearing any kind of a mask. He didn't
- 13:30Speaker 6: make any attempt to disguise himself?
- 13:31Speaker 7: No, stood there big as life, him and this other fella.
- 13:34Speaker 7: Didn't waste any time either. They pulled the guns, lined
- 13:36Speaker 7: up everybody in the place and stood them against that
- 13:38Speaker 7: wall over there.
- 13:39Speaker 6: Real Wild West style. Took over the whole place.
- 13:42Speaker 4: It acted real wild, Andy and.
- 13:43Speaker 6: This other fella. Must be crazy.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Nobody was hurt? Didn't slug anyone?
- 13:46Speaker 7: I slapped a few of the customers around. I thought
- 13:48Speaker 7: for a while they were really going to get rough.
- 13:50Speaker 7: They had us lined up against the wall. Andy was
- 13:51Speaker 7: acting tough. Had this knife with him, good four-inch blade.
- 13:55Speaker 7: Went right down the line jabbing people with it, threatening them.
- 13:57Speaker 6: Must be out of his mind. You say he didn't
- 13:59Speaker 6: take any money from the customers. Yeah, that's right. They
- 14:01Speaker 6: worked it pretty fast.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Emptied the cash register, then my wallet. Then they beat it.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Never so glad to see anybody go in my life.
- 14:07Speaker 6: Well, how'd they get away? Do you have any idea
- 14:08Speaker 6: on that?
- 14:09Speaker 7: Old guy who sells papers down the corner. He says
- 14:11Speaker 7: he thinks he saw a car pull away right after
- 14:12Speaker 7: the stick-up. Said it was a blue sedan. Don't know
- 14:15Speaker 7: how much stock you can put in it. The old
- 14:17Speaker 7: man's eyes aren't what they used to be.
- 14:18Speaker 4: Did you know Paul pretty well when he was working here, Mr. Saunders?
- 14:21Speaker 4: I mean, did you know any of his friends, people
- 14:22Speaker 4: he used to run with?
- 14:23Speaker 7: No, I didn't know him that well. He worked for me,
- 14:25Speaker 7: that's all. I still have his old address, the place
- 14:27Speaker 7: he was living.
- 14:28Speaker 6: When he worked for me.
- 14:28Speaker 4: I can get it if you want.
- 14:30Speaker 6: Yeah, if you would, please. Sure, no trouble. I just
- 14:33Speaker 6: don't get it.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Don't get it at all.
- 14:35Speaker 7: Of all the joints in town he could have held up,
- 14:37Speaker 7: he had to pick mine, the one place he'd be recognized.
- 14:39Speaker 4: You think he'd have better sense, wouldn't you? You'd think so, yeah.
- 14:42Speaker 7: How'd they ever hire a guy as dumb as that Paul,
- 14:43Speaker 7: holding up the place he worked for? Biggest mistake he
- 14:46Speaker 7: ever made. No, he made a bigger one yesterday.
- 14:48Speaker 6: Yeah, what was that? When he broke prison. 2.05 a.m.
- 14:55Speaker 6: Further investigation at the scene of the latest holdup failed
- 14:58Speaker 6: to turn up any new leads. While Ed and I
- 15:00Speaker 6: checked on Powell's former address, which we'd gotten from the
- 15:02Speaker 6: owner of the 2050 room, Gonzalez, Ricketts, and Gaffney continued
- 15:06Speaker 6: checking the immediate neighborhood. In addition, a special detail from
- 15:10Speaker 6: Metro Division was sent in to cover the entire area.
- 15:13Speaker 6: The suspect's former address turned out to be a rooming
- 15:15Speaker 6: house up on West Temple Street. The landlady remembered Andy Powell,
- 15:19Speaker 6: but she had no forwarding address on him, and she
- 15:21Speaker 6: could tell us nothing about his former friends and associates.
- 15:24Speaker 6: We checked back with Gonzales, Ricketts, and Gaffney, and they
- 15:27Speaker 6: told us that besides the old newspaper vendor, the counterman
- 15:30Speaker 6: at the coffee shop near the 2050 room had also
- 15:32Speaker 6: spotted a blue sedan leaving the vicinity of the nightclub
- 15:35Speaker 6: shortly after the holdup. He was able to give them
- 15:38Speaker 6: the make, the model, and a partial license number. A
- 15:41Speaker 6: supplementary all points had been gotten out on it immediately,
- 15:44Speaker 6: and the information relayed to DMV and auto theft detail. 3.10 a.m.
- 15:49Speaker 6: Ed and I completed our assignment in the investigation and
- 15:52Speaker 6: went back to the office to check for instructions from
- 15:54Speaker 6: Captain Didion.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Can't see how we'd be much use out on the
- 15:57Speaker 4: street the way things stand now, can you?
- 15:59Speaker 6: No, I don't.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Everything's covered, I can think of. Supplementary oil points is out.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Detail from Metro's working and everything.
- 16:04Speaker 6: Right. It's funny, isn't it?
- 16:06Speaker 4: What's that?
- 16:06Speaker 6: Unless Andy Powell, going back to that place he used
- 16:08Speaker 6: to work and holding it up, that doesn't make any
- 16:10Speaker 6: sense at all, does it?
- 16:11Speaker 4: That's for sure. Must have known somebody was going to
- 16:13Speaker 4: recognize him. Couldn't have been a coincidence.
- 16:15Speaker 6: There was only one way I can figure it. They
- 16:16Speaker 6: don't care, either one of them. They got their money now,
- 16:18Speaker 6: a car. They both got guns. They're out to go
- 16:20Speaker 6: as far as they can.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Oh, hi, Jess. Hi. You just get back in? Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Hi, Joe.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Hi.
- 16:26Speaker 6: You as tired as you sound?
- 16:27Speaker 4: Worse. Fair piece of news, though.
- 16:29Speaker 6: Yeah, what's that?
- 16:30Speaker 4: Powell and Selby, they just found their hideout.
- 16:36Speaker 6: After three hours of canvassing the general downtown area, particularly
- 16:40Speaker 6: in the vicinity of the last holdup, a team of
- 16:42Speaker 6: men working with the Special Detail for Metropolitan Division interviewed
- 16:45Speaker 6: a desk clerk in a small hotel on South Broadway
- 16:48Speaker 6: who recognized the suspect's mugshots. The two of them had
- 16:51Speaker 6: registered early the morning before under the names J.E. Dennis
- 16:55Speaker 6: and Harold Thompson, both from Fresno, California. The hotel room
- 17:00Speaker 6: was searched and two San Quentin inmate uniforms were found
- 17:03Speaker 6: stuffed under the mattress of the bed. After the room
- 17:05Speaker 6: was processed for fingerprints, there was no doubt that the
- 17:08Speaker 6: recent occupants were Powell and Selby. The clerk had no
- 17:12Speaker 6: idea when they were supposed to return. The hotel was
- 17:14Speaker 6: staked out immediately, and the citywide search for the escaped
- 17:17Speaker 6: prisoners went on. The following day, Thursday, October 7th, 11.30 a.m.,
- 17:22Speaker 6: still no sign of the suspects, no further reports or
- 17:25Speaker 6: leads as to their whereabouts. The search went on. Ed
- 17:28Speaker 6: and I signed back in at the office. Ten minutes later,
- 17:30Speaker 6: a long-distance phone call came in for us.
- 17:33Speaker 4: When was that, Morton?
- 17:34Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 17:36Speaker 4: What's that? Yeah, close enough, right? We'll let you know, yeah.
- 17:39Speaker 6: Bye.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Mark Geer, down in San Diego.
- 17:42Speaker 6: Yeah, what do you want?
- 17:43Speaker 4: One of the traffic officers was checking a car about
- 17:45Speaker 4: 8 o'clock this morning, 586 parking. Mm-hmm. Blue sedan, fits
- 17:49Speaker 4: close to the description of the escape car.
- 17:51Speaker 6: Well, it's a pretty common model, isn't it? Did he
- 17:52Speaker 6: say anything else?
- 17:53Speaker 4: Traffic man checked the inside of the car, glove compartment,
- 17:56Speaker 4: found half a dozen rolls of dimes and quarters, same
- 17:58Speaker 4: name stamped on all of them.
- 17:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:59Speaker 2: 2050 room.
- 18:11Speaker 3: You are listening to Dragnet, authentic stories of your police
- 18:15Speaker 3: force in action.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Comparison proves Fatima quality. Prove Fatima quality yourself today.
- 18:22Speaker 3: Compare Fatima with any other king-size cigarette.
- 18:26Speaker 2: One, Fatima's length filters the smoke 85 millimeters for your protection.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Two, Fatima's length cools the smoke for your protection.
- 18:34Speaker 6: Three, Fatima's length gives you those extra puffs.
- 18:38Speaker 2: 21% longer than standard cigarette size.
- 18:41Speaker 3: And in Fatima, you get an extra mild and soothing smoke,
- 18:45Speaker 3: plus the added protection of Fatima quality.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Friends, to show our confidence in Fatima, we make this
- 18:52Speaker 2: money-back guarantee. Buy a pack of Fatimas. Enjoy Fatima quality,
- 18:58Speaker 2: extra mildness, and superbly blended tobaccos. If you're not convinced
- 19:03Speaker 2: Fatima is better than the king-size cigarette you're now smoking.
- 19:07Speaker 6: Just return.
- 19:08Speaker 2: The pack and the unsmoked Fatimas by August 1st, 1952
- 19:11Speaker 2: for your money back plus postage. Fatima, Box 37, New
- 19:16Speaker 2: York 1.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Remember, because of its quality, its extra mildness, its better
- 19:22Speaker 3: flavor and aroma, more smokers now insist on Fatima than
- 19:26Speaker 3: ever before.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Insist on the best. Fatima, extra mild and soothing. Plus,
- 19:33Speaker 2: the added protection of Fatima quality. Smoke Fatima. Best of all,
- 19:39Speaker 2: king-size cigarettes. October 7th, Thursday, 1 p.m.
- 19:51Speaker 6: After we got the report from Lieutenant Mortgeer that the
- 19:53Speaker 6: escape car, along with a few dollars of the stolen money,
- 19:55Speaker 6: had been located in San Diego that morning, Ed and
- 19:58Speaker 6: I had a meeting with Captain Didion. It was beginning
- 20:01Speaker 6: to look like our first hunch was right. Powell and
- 20:03Speaker 6: Selby's 24-hour campaign of holdups in the Los Angeles area
- 20:07Speaker 6: had netted them a fresh change of clothes and more
- 20:09Speaker 6: than enough money to live on for a while. With
- 20:12Speaker 6: the locating of the escape car in San Diego, it
- 20:14Speaker 6: looked like the suspects were apparently taking the next logical step,
- 20:17Speaker 6: a fast move over the international border into Mexico, a
- 20:21Speaker 6: distance of less than 20 miles from San Diego. Probably
- 20:25Speaker 6: they figured once over the line they had a good
- 20:27Speaker 6: chance of losing themselves. 1.40 p.m. On Captain Didion's orders,
- 20:31Speaker 6: Jess Gonzalez, Ed, and I got in the car and
- 20:33Speaker 6: headed south for San Diego with a supply of mug
- 20:35Speaker 6: shots of the escaped prisoners. We got there a few
- 20:38Speaker 6: minutes after 4 p.m. We went directly to the San
- 20:41Speaker 6: Diego PD where we contacted Sergeant Tony McGuire, robbery detail.
- 20:45Speaker 6: Tough week, huh?
- 20:45Speaker 4: I hear they've been driving you.
- 20:46Speaker 6: Crazy up there.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Just about, Tony. Four robberies in 24 hours have given
- 20:50Speaker 4: us a run. How about Mort Gere?
- 20:51Speaker 1: You around?
- 20:52Speaker 6: Yeah, he just went down the hall, Jess.
- 20:53Speaker 4: Ought to be back in a minute.
- 20:55Speaker 6: Why don't you fellas sit down? Thanks very much. What's
- 20:59Speaker 6: the latest, Tony? Anything since you picked up that blue sedan?
- 21:01Speaker 4: No, not much. Got the car in the impound.
- 21:03Speaker 6: Had to dust it for prints. We made them all right,
- 21:05Speaker 6: both sets. Powell and Selby.
- 21:07Speaker 4: No sign of them around town?
- 21:08Speaker 8: No, got it pretty well covered, too.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Another trace.
- 21:11Speaker 6: We're in a good spot to make it over into Mexico.
- 21:13Speaker 6: Hate to disappoint you. What do you mean? We think
- 21:15Speaker 6: they already made it.
- 21:19Speaker 4: At 6 o'clock that.
- 21:20Speaker 6: Night, Gonzales, Ed, and I, together with Lieutenant Gere, Tony McGuire,
- 21:24Speaker 6: and Sergeants Gaten and Schultz, drove south from San Diego
- 21:27Speaker 6: to the International Line. We left mugshots of Powell and
- 21:31Speaker 6: Selby with the immigration officers at the entry gate. Then
- 21:34Speaker 6: we drove into the town of Tijuana, contacted the local
- 21:36Speaker 6: commandant of police, and he promised us full cooperation. He
- 21:41Speaker 6: assigned a special detail of his men to work with
- 21:43Speaker 6: us in covering the town. At 8 p.m., the block-by-block
- 21:47Speaker 6: canvas of the city began. Every back alley, every bar,
- 21:50Speaker 6: every restaurant, every hotel, they were all checked. The tourist attractions,
- 21:54Speaker 6: the souvenir stands, the nightclubs, the High Life Pavilion. We
- 21:57Speaker 6: went straight through on it, 8 o'clock that night until
- 21:59Speaker 6: 5 o'clock the next morning. All it got us was
- 22:02Speaker 6: sore feet and a mediocre lead from a native taxi driver.
- 22:05Speaker 6: After being shown the mug shots, he told one of
- 22:07Speaker 6: the Mexican officers in the detail that about noon that day,
- 22:11Speaker 6: he'd picked up two Americans resembling Powell and Selby and
- 22:14Speaker 6: driven them to the town of Tecate, another Mexican tourist
- 22:17Speaker 6: spot about 25 miles to the east. 10.30 a.m., we
- 22:21Speaker 6: drove over and checked with the police at Tecate, and
- 22:24Speaker 6: they told us that two Americans had arrived in the
- 22:26Speaker 6: town that morning. He invited Jess Gonzalez to go along
- 22:30Speaker 6: with the three of his men to the hotel where
- 22:31Speaker 6: the men were supposed to be staying. Ed and I
- 22:33Speaker 6: waited in the office.
- 22:36Speaker 4: All right. Hi, Jess.
- 22:37Speaker 6: What do you got?
- 22:38Speaker 4: Not much. Went over to the hotel. The two men
- 22:40Speaker 4: weren't there. Desk clerk says they told.
- 22:41Speaker 7: Him they were driving out to a little village about
- 22:43Speaker 7: a mile from here. Police come and done asked me
- 22:45Speaker 7: to come back here and wait. Said he and his
- 22:47Speaker 7: men would drive out.
- 22:48Speaker 4: To the village and check the men out.
- 22:49Speaker 6: That seems a little funny, doesn't it?
- 22:51Speaker 7: Well, he didn't invite me to come along. It's not
- 22:53Speaker 7: a good idea to push him. I mean, after all,
- 22:54Speaker 7: it's his jurisdiction.
- 22:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:55Speaker 4: We're supposed to wait here till they get back?
- 22:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:57Speaker 4: I'm up to him now. See, police here? Uh-huh, yeah.
- 23:03Speaker 6: Uh, see, see. About half an hour, yes, sir. All right, gracias.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Goodbye, C. The commandant, he and his men found the
- 23:11Speaker 4: two Americans.
- 23:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:12Speaker 4: No go. They're not Powell and Selby.
- 23:18Speaker 6: Half an hour later, the police commandant of Tecate returned
- 23:20Speaker 6: to the station along with his men and the two
- 23:23Speaker 6: American tourists in question. One look at them and we
- 23:25Speaker 6: knew we'd made the trip from Tijuana for nothing. Except
- 23:28Speaker 6: for their build and the color of their hair, the
- 23:30Speaker 6: two Americans bore little or no resemblance to Powell and Selby. 2.30 p.m.,
- 23:35Speaker 6: we headed back for Tijuana and we checked in with
- 23:37Speaker 6: Mort Gere and the rest of the men. While we'd
- 23:40Speaker 6: been gone, they'd chased down half a dozen leads, but
- 23:42Speaker 6: none of them had panned out. The rest of the afternoon,
- 23:45Speaker 6: we covered the racetrack at Agua Caliente and distributed mugshots
- 23:48Speaker 6: of the suspects to all track police officers. The mutual
- 23:52Speaker 6: windows were covered and also the foreign book. No luck.
- 23:55Speaker 6: The six of us took time out for a bite
- 23:57Speaker 6: of supper and we talked it over. Logically, the next
- 23:59Speaker 6: place in line to cover was either the fishing town
- 24:02Speaker 6: of Ensenada on the coast or the city of Mexicali
- 24:05Speaker 6: further inland. We decided to try Ensenada first. 7.30 that night,
- 24:10Speaker 6: we checked in at the Ensenada police station where we
- 24:12Speaker 6: met with a local sub-commandant, Pedro Martinez. Like the other
- 24:16Speaker 6: commandants in Tijuana and Tecate, he offered full cooperation and
- 24:20Speaker 6: gave us a special detail of men to aid in
- 24:22Speaker 6: the search. We gave him a supply of mugshots of
- 24:24Speaker 6: the two convicts to distribute among his men.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Here you are, sir. These are pictures of one of them,
- 24:29Speaker 4: Andrew Powell. This one here is the other man, Bert Selby.
- 24:32Speaker 6: All right, thank you.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Juan?
- 24:35Speaker 6: Juan!
- 24:35Speaker 1: Si.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Si.
- 24:38Speaker 6: Que es? These pictures, Juan. Criminals.
- 24:40Speaker 4: They're for distribution to the men, one each. Si, si.
- 24:44Speaker 4: Estos son los hombres? Si, si, porque? Un momento, un momento.
- 24:49Speaker 6: Si. Excuse me, officers.
- 24:50Speaker 4: Yes, all right.
- 24:53Speaker 6: Go ahead. Sure, what is it? It's got me, I
- 24:55Speaker 6: don't know.
- 24:56Speaker 4: See the look on his face when the chief showed
- 24:58Speaker 4: him the mug shots?
- 24:59Speaker 6: He's got something on his mind. Let's wait a minute.
- 25:03Speaker 4: Officers, I hope you will excuse me. Yes, sir.
- 25:05Speaker 6: Anything wrong?
- 25:06Speaker 8: My assistant, Teniente Sanfilippo, he says he knows the pictures
- 25:09Speaker 8: of these men.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Oh, how's that?
- 25:11Speaker 6: He says he saw these men this morning here in Ensenada. Yeah,
- 25:13Speaker 6: he's sure about that, is he?
- 25:14Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 25:15Speaker 6: He says he's sure.
- 25:16Speaker 8: He says the two men were here last night right
- 25:17Speaker 8: here in the station.
- 25:18Speaker 6: You mean your men booked them in? They committed some
- 25:20Speaker 6: kind of crime?
- 25:21Speaker 5: Oh, no, sir.
- 25:22Speaker 6: They came in to report a crime. 8.20 p.m. On
- 25:27Speaker 6: further questioning, the assistant to the Ensenada Commandant of Police
- 25:30Speaker 6: told us that the night before, two men answering Powell
- 25:33Speaker 6: and Selby's description had come in to file a complaint
- 25:36Speaker 6: at the Central Police Station. They charged that they'd had
- 25:39Speaker 6: their pockets picked at a local bar while they were
- 25:41Speaker 6: under the influence of alcohol. The two complainants, who matched
- 25:45Speaker 6: Powell's and Selby's descriptions perfectly, signed themselves J.E. Dennis and
- 25:49Speaker 6: Harold Thompson, both from Fresno, California, the same names and
- 25:52Speaker 6: addresses that had been used by the occupants of the
- 25:55Speaker 6: Southside Los Angeles hotel room where the discarded prison uniforms
- 25:58Speaker 6: had been found a day and a half before. After
- 26:01Speaker 6: a brief talk with the police commandant, he dispatched a
- 26:04Speaker 6: special detail to go out and pick up the two
- 26:06Speaker 6: men registered as Dennis and Thompson at a motel near
- 26:09Speaker 6: the south end of the city. At the commandant's request,
- 26:12Speaker 6: we remained at the office. 9 p.m., 9.30. The detail
- 26:17Speaker 6: assigned to the job returned, but was only one of
- 26:19Speaker 6: the suspects with him, Andrew Powell. While resisting arrest, the
- 26:23Speaker 6: other suspect identified as Selby received a cut forehead and
- 26:26Speaker 6: was being taken to a local clinic for treatment. The
- 26:29Speaker 6: commandant briefed us on what had happened. The rooms were searched,
- 26:33Speaker 6: Officer Friday. Some money was found, also two guns, a
- 26:35Speaker 6: revolver and a shotgun.
- 26:36Speaker 4: Here they are.
- 26:37Speaker 6: All right, thanks very much, sir. Well, Paul, how about it?
- 26:40Speaker 6: You ready to cop out?
- 26:41Speaker 4: What are you talking about, cop out? What did you
- 26:43Speaker 4: guys come all the way down here for anyway? You
- 26:45Speaker 4: can't touch us. What makes you think we can't? You can't,
- 26:47Speaker 4: that's all. You know better. You can't arrest us down here.
- 26:49Speaker 4: No jurisdiction. We didn't arrest you, Paul. The Mexican officers did. Okay, fine. Now,
- 26:53Speaker 4: how do you expect to get us out of Mexico? Yes, again, copper.
- 26:56Speaker 4: You know you can't do it. You haven't got the
- 26:57Speaker 4: right to.
- 26:58Speaker 6: Maybe. You want to tell us where you have the loot?
- 27:00Speaker 6: The money you took in those holdups?
- 27:01Speaker 4: Why should I? Look, why don't you admit it? We
- 27:03Speaker 4: got you beat. We got over the line. You can't
- 27:04Speaker 4: touch us down here.
- 27:05Speaker 6: Now, don't bet on that, mister. Commandant? Yes, sir? You
- 27:08Speaker 6: want to tell them how it stands?
- 27:10Speaker 8: I will see that the general in charge of the
- 27:11Speaker 8: Northern District is notified in the morning of your case.
- 27:14Speaker 6: He will see that you and your partner are deported.
- 27:16Speaker 4: What are you trying to pull? You can't do that.
- 27:17Speaker 4: You know it. It's illegal. So is robbery, Powell. Come
- 27:20Speaker 4: off it. It doesn't make any difference. You can't touch
- 27:21Speaker 4: us in Mexico. It's against the law. You can't touch us.
- 27:23Speaker 6: A popular misconception, Mr. Powell. I'm afraid you have made
- 27:27Speaker 6: a mistake. If you like, you can pass the word.
- 27:30Speaker 6: How long would it be for us to receive the
- 27:31Speaker 6: prisoners at the line, sir? I don't know. A long time,
- 27:34Speaker 6: I think. Maybe as long as 1 o'clock tomorrow.
- 27:36Speaker 4: You know you can't do this. You'll never get away
