Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. OK, let's just get straight into
- 0:25the episode because what the hell?
- 0:28Tricia Paytas has given birth to her son and we know his name.
- 0:35Obviously she drops the name on the day of Mini Tech scroll.
- 0:39OK, so yes, Tricia Paytas had her baby on July 12th.
- 0:43She announced the name yesterday.
- 0:45I'm sure you've all seen it, but in case you haven't, she named
- 0:49him Aquaman Moses Paytas Hackman Aquaman Moses.
- 0:57So I'm not kidding. When my alarm went off
- 0:58yesterday, I opened my phone and my friend in Canada had texted
- 1:02me a screenshot from like an Instagram post that said Tricia
- 1:06Paytas has named her baby Aquaman.
- 1:08My friend wrote to me like what is with this name?
- 1:10What is going on? So literally within 2 seconds of
- 1:14my alarm going off and me opening my eyes, the first thing
- 1:18that I interacted with, the first thing that I saw yesterday
- 1:20was that Tricia Paytas named her baby Aquaman.
- 1:24Honestly, that feels right. Like that feels correct for me.
- 1:29So look, was Aquaman a plot twist for most of us?
- 1:32Yes. But were there also some people
- 1:36who guessed that that would be his name?
- 1:40Yes. Tricia is obsessed with Jason
- 1:43Momoa and she would obviously never name her son Jason.
- 1:48I think we all know why. Also because it would be way too
- 1:50boring. She apparently also let it slip
- 1:52at one of her live shows that the name was going to start with
- 1:54A So I guess people know she's obsessed with Jason Momoa.
- 1:57She said it was going to start with A.
- 1:59One of the main theories was that was Atlantis but no it was
- 2:03Aquaman and there are people all over TikTok who had guessed
- 2:06that. So on her podcast she said
- 2:08another name they considered they were like this close to
- 2:11using it was water Snake. Water snake.
- 2:14And like OK, we all know that Moses has this thing with water.
- 2:18Like he feels like he identifies as water.
- 2:21Like he that's like been his whole thing.
- 2:23If you have followed their relationship and their lore for
- 2:25a long time then you would know that.
- 2:27So I guess water Snake is his favorite poem.
- 2:30Moses is the year of the snake and she says she loves the name
- 2:33Water. So they were going to name him
- 2:35Water Snake. What do you guys think?
- 2:37I think water snake is more normal than Aquaman because she
- 2:40also said in this podcast like he is not awkward.
- 2:42Like you know how they call Malibu Barbie Malibu.
- 2:45She was like, his name is not Aqua.
- 2:46Like his name is Aquaman. She's like, we will not be
- 2:49calling him Aqua. So water snake, she was like, I
- 2:52love the name water. So they probably would have
- 2:54called him water, which I get like I think is more normal than
- 2:57Aquaman. I actually don't even fucking
- 3:00know Aquaman. Aquaman Moses.
- 3:04My brother and I were talking last night like what is he going
- 3:06to go by if he can't go by Aqua? Like I was thinking, OK, maybe
- 3:11Aqua. But then when I watched her
- 3:12podcast day, my brother was like maybe MO, you know, like Moses
- 3:15MO like go by his middle name. I don't know.
- 3:19Malibu, Barbie and Elvis are so normal compared to Aquaman.
- 3:24Like when I was talking about it with my brother, he was like,
- 3:26Aquaman is like not a name. Like and like obviously we know
- 3:30that's not a name, but like it's, it's so not a name.
- 3:32Like it is not apple coated. OK.
- 3:35It is not one of these like weird celebrity names like
- 3:38Aquaman actually wild. And the people who guessed it
- 3:41were guessing it kind of as like a joke like, you know, they were
- 3:43like that would be insane. Good for Tricia.
- 3:46I mean truly, I saw TikTok. I'm sure you guys have seen it
- 3:48too because it is super viral. But he was like, nobody lives
- 3:51life like you, Tricia. And for that I'm jealous.
- 3:55And for that I thank you. And that's I guess how I feel.
- 3:58Do I think it's mean that she named her son Aquaman?
- 4:00Like kind of. But also The thing is like she's
- 4:04famous and she's always going to be kind of like Internet famous.
- 4:08Even if she stops the podcast steps back by the time this kids
- 4:11a teenager or whatever, like she's always going to have this
- 4:13lore around her. I think they're going to home
- 4:16school their kids probably forever.
- 4:17Like I know that's they they've said that's the plan.
- 4:20I don't know I'm like maybe it's actually not that weird because
- 4:23they live in Lai don't know Aquaman.
- 4:26I don't know you guys, I don't know.
- 4:27So welcome Aquaman Moses. OK, the next one that I have for
- 4:31you guys, I have a pretty niche like bookstagram story for you.
- 4:36I got this from garbage day the newsletter.
- 4:38If you guys don't subscribe, you definitely should.
- 4:41But this is like niche, but you know, it's it's relevant.
- 4:44It's relevant to us. We don't really cover like
- 4:46threads or even really Instagram news that often.
- 4:50So this is not book talk. This is like book threads, like
- 4:53books to Graham. OK, so books to Graham gossip
- 4:56creator Jana and books is facing backlash for her defense of
- 5:00fanfic writers who cover Harry Potter.
- 5:03So there's this popular bookstogram creator called Jana
- 5:06and books. And she makes a lot of like
- 5:08author book talk, bookstogram gossip or like drama content.
- 5:13And she posts a lot of it on threads.
- 5:15Or she did and then her post got so popular that she actually
- 5:18turned her reporting into a paid sub stack called Lady Whistle
- 5:22Threads. She's been pretty open about the
- 5:24fact that she covers drama in this niche for engagement when
- 5:28really she would rather be posting like book reviews and
- 5:31other types of content. But you know, she says like
- 5:33negativity wins. And it does.
- 5:35But now the community that she's built is turning on her after
- 5:39she seemingly endorsed the new romance fanfic novel by author
- 5:43Julie Soto. So Julie Soto wrote a new novel
- 5:46called Rose in Chains. This novel is an adaptation of
- 5:50an existing fanfic story that was changed essentially like
- 5:54just enough to get around copyright.
- 5:56So it was like a storyline that existed or like a a story like a
- 6:01plot that existed on like Wetpad or those other fanfic sites.
- 6:05This is like a genre that's becoming more popular where
- 6:07authors are finding these storylines, taking them,
- 6:11changing them just enough, but being very open about like the
- 6:13origins of the storyline. And they're not trying to pass
- 6:16it off like necessarily as their own.
- 6:18So Rosen Chains is adapted from a hair Harry Potter fanfic
- 6:23storyline where Draco and Hermione get together.
- 6:26Soda was criticized by her audience for using Harry Potter
- 6:29source material for this new novel given JK Rowling's anti
- 6:33trans stance and her absolute inability to listen to reason to
- 6:38be a somewhat decent human being on this topic at all, and Jana,
- 6:43given she reports in this space, shared her opinion on the
- 6:46backlash. I want to talk about Rose in
- 6:48chains and the irresistible urge to fall for your enemy.
- 6:52I guess this is another book before they come out next week.
- 6:54First, if you don't want to read anything remotely connected to
- 6:57Harry Potter because the author has upset you so much, I totally
- 7:00get that. If you want to mute me for the
- 7:02next while while I talk about them, I will not be insulted at
- 7:05all. Second, if you don't know why I
- 7:07no longer give money to the creator of Harry Potter, it's
- 7:10because she actively campaigns for people to lose their bodily
- 7:13autonomy and freedom of self-expression in order to
- 7:16target transgender people. I was a huge Harry Potter fan,
- 7:19but now actively avoid giving her a single cent.
- 7:22I think everyone should be free to express their gender however
- 7:25feels best for them, including people who identify as
- 7:27transgender. So why do I support these
- 7:30Germany fanfics turned traditionally published books?
- 7:33One, JK Rowling doesn't receive any financial compensation. 2
- 7:38the authors support transgender people. 3, the books are no
- 7:41longer the fix and everything that was Harry Potter has been
- 7:44removed. OK so that is something that I
- 7:46forgot to say. So in Rose and Chains the two
- 7:49main characters names like Draco and Hermione have been changed.
- 7:52Do I think you should read the books?
- 7:54That depends. One, if it will bother you that
- 7:57these books might exist because they were originally Harry
- 7:59Potter fan fiction, Probably not.
- 8:02Two, I would encourage you to look up the content warnings,
- 8:04especially for Rosen Chains, and decide if that's something you
- 8:07want to read. Three, if you've never read
- 8:09Harry Potter and like Romanticy, absolutely.
- 8:12And finally, do I think promoting these books keeps
- 8:14Harry Potter relevant? Probably.
- 8:17But I think the new HBO show is also keeping Harry Potter
- 8:20relevant, and that will put more money in the author's pocket.
- 8:24So I plan to remind people to not support anything that gives
- 8:26her money, alongside talking about books that started out as
- 8:30fan fiction. OK.
- 8:31So this was not well received. The top response to this was
- 8:35somebody who said, I don't know, I think that trans people in the
- 8:38book space have largely said they don't want people
- 8:40supporting these Germany fix. I think we need to listen to the
- 8:43marginalized group that is being affected.
- 8:46So that was generally the sentiment towards her post.
- 8:49OK, So the backlash kept getting bigger and bigger, I guess.
- 8:52So Jana actually ended up disabling her account
- 8:56temporarily and then she reopened it and she issued kind
- 8:59of like a formal apology, I guess.
- 9:02But by then, the damage was. So all of this was going down a
- 9:05week or two ago, but it was very much contained to one specific
- 9:10niche on the Internet. Now it has expanded beyond that
- 9:13because it has started to seep into real life.
- 9:16So Julie Soto was supposed to be a featured guest at Romancecon,
- 9:20which is like a big romanticy. Romanticy.
- 9:23Yeah, romanticy. I was like, did I just, like,
- 9:24mix up those words? Romanticy convention like book
- 9:28convention? Shortly after the backlash
- 9:30around her novel and then the Threads fiasco with Jana,
- 9:33Romance Con announced they had parted ways with Julie Soto.
- 9:37And then it kept snowballing and dozens of authors started
- 9:41pulling out of Romance Con off the back of this.
- 9:45This is from garbage day quote. According to the conventions
- 9:47website, the cascade has been going on long enough for over
- 9:50half of the authors attending Romance Con to have pulled out,
- 9:55and Mischief Management, which is the company behind Romance
- 9:58Con, has handed off running the convention, which at this point
- 10:02seems to consist mostly of mopping up the mess.
- 10:05I wanted to cover the story because I think it's so
- 10:07interesting. It's it's a great example and
- 10:10they said this in garbage day too, but it's a great example of
- 10:13something expanding beyond like not just like the online world,
- 10:16because this was like so contained like this is threads
- 10:19drama at the end of the day, okay, like who is on threads,
- 10:22you know, like this is very, very niche.
- 10:24This is way more niche than like a lot of the stuff we cover, but
- 10:28it has such real world consequences now, And I always
- 10:31say this in any of our consulting meetings with brands,
- 10:34like when you are trying to reach young people online, you
- 10:38also need to consider how their offline world will be affected
- 10:42by that. Because for, I mean, honestly
- 10:44for all of us, like especially young people, but like at this
- 10:47point basically all of us, there is no differentiation between
- 10:50online world and offline worlds. Internet culture is just culture
- 10:54at this point. What happens online impacts
- 10:57everyone offline. We are in one blended ecosystem
- 11:00now. Our worlds do not exist
- 11:02separately almost at all. So I very much appreciate that
- 11:07the book community is pushing back on this and saying it's
- 11:10like, listen to the people, listen to the transgender
- 11:12people, the authors, the people that are fans of this space,
- 11:15that are operating in this space.
- 11:16When they say any support of anything related to Harry
- 11:20Potter, to the fan fiction around Harry Potter, whatever is
- 11:23not OK and it's not standing in solidarity with us and it's not
- 11:28being a good ally towards us. And I think that's really
- 11:30important. And I guess this is the trickle
- 11:34on effect from that. All right, the last story that I
- 11:36have for you guys is that the BOP House might be no more.
- 11:43So we've never really talked about the Bop House on this
- 11:45podcast, maybe a couple of times like mentioning it.
- 11:48And I know I did reference them when I was talking about Ash
- 11:50Trevino once because Ash brought her young children, like minor
- 11:55children, teenagers to the Bop House to record a podcast.
- 11:59And that was definitely a questionable decision, to say
- 12:03the least, because the Bop House is a content house for only
- 12:07fans, creators and the girls are I don't know.
- 12:10It's it's very weird because I think the sentiment around the
- 12:13Bob house is one of two things. It's either like you think that
- 12:16they're fun to watch. They're really like light
- 12:18hearted. Their drama seems a little bit
- 12:20petty. Like it's fun.
- 12:22Like in some ways it harks back to like the original kind of
- 12:26concept of like influencer drama where it's like, quote UN quote,
- 12:28like not that serious. OK.
- 12:30But on the other hand, they are all very young women and their
- 12:35lifestyles and what they post online and how they go about
- 12:38their careers and showcasing that absolutely glamorizes only
- 12:43fans for the other young girls that watch them.
- 12:46And I, I am going to assume that the majority of their followers
- 12:51are either young women, like young girls or like old men.
- 12:56It's like Anna Paul, like a lot of her followers on TikTok are
- 12:59young girls. And I think it's probably the
- 13:01same for the pop house and those creators.
- 13:03So the Bob house, it cost $75,000 a month.
- 13:07All the creators split the rent. And two days ago, Julie from the
- 13:12Bob House made a video saying the content house was falling
- 13:15apart. Everyone and their mom is
- 13:17beeping. 2 girls can even be in the same room as each other.
- 13:19You're wondering, are we having all film together?
- 13:21There you go. One moving to LA.
- 13:23One's in a secret relationship. Girls don't even want to retire,
- 13:26let alone the group chat. I am going to leave the group
- 13:30chat. And then Sophie Rain from the
- 13:32house announced that she is officially leaving the group,
- 13:35she told Us Weekly. Quote The Bob House will always
- 13:37be a huge part of my life, but lately I felt like I was losing
- 13:40my own voice inside of it. What started as an empowering
- 13:43space began to feel controlling, with certain members wanting to
- 13:46dictate how I should act, post and live.
- 13:49Leaving wasn't an easy decision, but I realized I needed to put
- 13:52my mental health and personal freedom first.
- 13:54I'm grateful for the memories, the success, and the sisterhood
- 13:57we once had, but it's time for me to move forward.
- 14:00So after all of this, Camilla, Julie, and Aisha went on the
- 14:04official Bop House TikTok account and said they're doing
- 14:06auditions next month in LA for the newest member, which I also
- 14:10have some feelings about. But I wanted to talk about this
- 14:13story because regardless of how we feel about the Bop House and
- 14:18what they may be directly or indirectly promoting to their
- 14:22audience, I think this story is just another example of how
- 14:27content houses don't actually work.
- 14:30They work for a period of time where everybody is collaborating
- 14:34together and kind of cross promoting each other.
- 14:37Obviously that's going to grow their follower count.
- 14:39Then they have one main account together, which I'm sure they
- 14:42all split the money where the money that they make from that
- 14:44account goes into the house or whatever it is.
- 14:46But how many times since the inception of content houses,
- 14:50which is like really like gaming houses, right?
- 14:52Like streamers and then we kind of had the OG like YouTube vlog
- 14:57houses. None of them work.
- 15:00They always end in absolute disasters where people are
- 15:03making like exposes, people are accusing each other of like
- 15:06horrific things. I mean Thomas Petrou just had to
- 15:08do like a multi part series on his TikTok.
- 15:11I think it was earlier this week or last week where he was saying
- 15:13like I and showed receipts. I didn't really watch all of it.
- 15:16So because I just feel like the hype house is like so, so done.
- 15:19So I didn't cover it. But you know, he shared receipts
- 15:22trying to say, like, I didn't steal anybody's money.
- 15:24Like there's still this narrative going around.
- 15:26It is just an absolute disaster. I think when you take like tons
- 15:29of young people who are making so much money, they are on the
- 15:33right of their lives. Like, they probably are so high
- 15:36off of like, fame and success and power and all this money
- 15:39that they have. And it happens like that, right?
- 15:40For so many creators, you put them all in one house together.
- 15:43That's already going to be crazy.
- 15:45But then not only do you put them in a house to all live
- 15:47together and collaborate together, but then they're in
- 15:49business together as well. So then they're also all making
- 15:52money. They're all responsible for
- 15:54splitting all, all of these bills.
- 15:55There's going to be so many issues with certain people not
- 15:58pulling their weight. People feeling like, oh, well,
- 16:00you know, I had a really good month and I gained X amount of
- 16:03followers and like, you barely grew.
- 16:05So like, I should get more of a cut.
- 16:06Like, whatever it is, it gets so messy.
- 16:10And they're all just like partying and going crazy.
- 16:12And it's like, yeah, it sounds like so much fun, but it also
- 16:15sounds like an actual living nightmare.
- 16:17I feel like it's just too complicated.
- 16:19We have seen, we have maybe actually I should do a deep dive
- 16:23into like the history and progression and like what we've
- 16:27learned about content houses. That could be really interesting
- 16:30because I was going to say, how long have we had content houses
- 16:33for at this point? Like honestly, 15 years, maybe
- 16:35not quite, but like probably around that.
- 16:37We have a lot of proof that this doesn't work.
- 16:39I don't think it's going to go away anytime soon, but I don't
- 16:42think content houses are as popular as they once were.
- 16:45Anyways, guys, that's it from any scroll today.
- 16:46Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 16:49Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 16:51There will be a deep dive tomorrow Pro Very exciting.
- 16:54Oh my God. Also, I didn't even say this at
- 16:57the beginning of the episode, but we rebranded.
- 17:00If you guys follow us on like Apple or Spotify or any of the
- 17:03podcast, so you don't listen to us on YouTube, then you'll
- 17:05notice that all of our cover art has had a little bit of a glow
- 17:07up, a little bit of a rebrand. My face is no longer in it,
- 17:10which makes sense because now we have Annabelle on Wednesdays and
- 17:13like, you know, like the feed in general is just so different.
- 17:15The podcast is so different than when I relaunched last year.
- 17:18So yes, anyways, a little bit of a refresh guys, I love you and
- 17:25there will be a deep dive tomorrow and then I will talk to
- 17:26you on Monday. Bye.
