- 0:03SPEAKER_01: What's up, brother?
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: Good morning.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: So uh Josh got scammed.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I fell for a scam.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: And I think it's because from my business uh Google profile that was on the interwebs.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: So yeah, we were working, what was it a Friday?
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: And would you get an email?
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: No, I got well, I got a phone call saying someone that someone was trying to change my password.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Well, actually, Google, I first off, I'll back up a number that said Google kept calling me, and I thought it was spam, so I hung up, I hung up, I hung up, and then I'm like, fine, I finally picked up and someone who was very pleasant on the phone said, uh, someone's trying to break I'm from Google, someone's trying to break into your account.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Uh they're named Muhammad25 over in Canada.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: And are do you know anyone like that?
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Or does do you have anyone in Canada that has your stuff?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: I said, Oh no.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, someone's in Salt Lake City doing the same thing.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't know what's going on there.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: And they're trying to break in, they're trying to, I we can see where they're going, and they're trying to go to a cryptocurrency um exchange and they're trying to withdraw funds.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: And so that's kind of where it was.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, and then I checked my email and it said someone's trying to access my from my actual Google, from Google, some someone's trying to access, like change my password.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And so I'm like, okay.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: So I was like, and so I was making sure, and then long story short, the people who were calling me were the actual scammers.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Now, did they have did they sound like an American accent?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: American accent?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: It was the the the most pleasant scammers I've ever talked to.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: They were very, they were low-key, low drama, and some of the I'm like, man, these guys are like, this is great customer service from Google.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: This was nice.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: They're really looking out for me.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And how they left it, because they did it on Friday afternoon.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: They said, hey, we're gonna your your account's gonna be locked for about 24 hours.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it goes a little longer than that.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, but here's a temporary password in case you need it.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And I was writing it down, and it was like Birdberry 45, some nonsense, uh, the right capital B.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And so I think they wanted me not to do anything.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: So I woke up the next day and I was doing I went to the office in the morning.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: I'm like, man, something didn't sit right with me.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: They talked about the cryptocurrency, and I did end up dialing my, you know how they have the 2FA um on your phone, like two-factor, yeah.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, two-factor where Google will send that to you.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: So Google was sending me those two FA texts, and the what I've didn't tell you guys is I know you're not supposed to tell anyone anything, but they're like, the guy from Google, quote unquote, said, All right, you're gonna get a Google uh two-factor authentication.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: You can enter it into your phone.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: I just can't hear it.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh thanks, bud.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: And I entered it, uh, and it really was from Google, so the scammers were triggering it.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: That, and it was the real Google sending me the the authentication, but then I gave them that authentication.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Uh and what I found out is the next day I went in, I started going through everything, and they broke into my email and they went into my Google Drive.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: And it looked like they went in and went out, but then I just had to go through all the security protocols of what passwords were on there, do they have access to any of my financial institutions?
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: And then I spent the whole Saturday, like at least half a Saturday just locking everything down.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: But they didn't get anything, and then I didn't actually have you know, I don't have much in crypto at all.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Well, and because I don't think you mentioned that they were going after crypto.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Yes, that's what they were that's well, that's the only thing they mentioned on the call.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And it makes sense because sometimes you can if you can get crypto quickly, it you can be up and gone versus a transfer from a bank, which takes a couple days.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that was awesome.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: So that kind of ruined my Saturday, but uh I learned a lot.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Don't give anyone your stuff, uh, don't enter anything on the phone.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: And apparently Google doesn't call you.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: So and they said the the proper way was to actually like hang up and then go contact Google or whoever is your institution independently from like your the verified numbers and the verified emails and all that stuff.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: I was thinking, yeah, because that's and I I'm it's gammers are tricky.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Well, and it's just gonna get worse with it.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they socially engineered me.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Some of them I fell for it like an idiot.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Like an idiot.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: You were on the phone because we were on the same job site on Friday, and I was almost like, hang up, dude.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Like I don't think.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: I know, I know, I should have.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: And uh, but they're slick.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: They were very slick, yeah, very calm.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Well, and I've almost gotten uh the scams have gotten w like pretty good, especially when you get into a tier of thing that is outside of like a normal uh kind of person, I would say.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Like the or if you're doing something that's unique to you, and then they use that as a kind of vessel to get in, because I got scammed where I get offers for uh doing ads and things like that for the YouTube channel, for uh not usually this channel, but for the paint your home now stuff, and then the a lot of it is slop, it's just like AI crap that's coming out of China usually that's like we want this pro and some of it's actually real, like you there are real products that are like things you never heard of on Amazon.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Like I've gotten pitched for like shower doors and like weird stuff, but then there was one that said, Hey, we work with all these brands, um brands we liked, and then they uh they like had a thing, they had a website that then had uh like what was it?
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: It was they had like br brands that they represented on their website, it looked very professional, and then um as I was going through it, I I can't remember, I had to like put in some kind of password and like log in with a Google account.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: You know, you have like your Google account.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: And then as soon as and then I looked at it, and the logo on the website was a letter off from the logo that they sent me in the email, and I was like, Oh, this is crap.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Like this that you this is a fake thing, they're just trying to like harvest my stuff and get your passwords, but they hit they said all the things that I wanted, I really wanted to hear at the time.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Like money up front, money up front, yeah.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: We and it was like products I wouldn't mind endorsing, uh, because what it was a piece of software that was um uh like Corral.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, which is like or Coral, it's like an art software, but it's like a really good software company.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: I was like, oh cool, like that's a cool uh that's a good piece of software.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: So it's like they knew like what buttons to push that I would respond to it.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: They did.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: And I'd gotten a bunch before that were like clear, and then I was like, oh, you sons of I was like, oh, I was so mad, and then I like like Jeremiah's idiot.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: You just you wanted this to be true.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: You stopped it before I did.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I at least gave him my info.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: I think I may have tried, and then they triggered the 2FA stuff, yeah.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: And then I was like, yo, this is not there's no reason this company needs this information.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: I was like, there's no reason that you guys need you could have my email to like email me back or something, but like uh so anyway, and then since then we've gotten actual like I've talked to real brands, and it that goes way different.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: So a little different, yeah.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Um there's a couple things, so like on on this end of things, how would you approach things differently as far as far as avoiding scams?
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Because they're just gonna get better from here.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: I know, I know.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Uh one, I'm gonna be even more skeptical of anyone calling me on the phone saying there's a problem, yeah.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: And then I would not give them any information, no text, no, no dialing buttons on your phone.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: And then the nice thing is what I did is I put a lot of security measures in place, which I haven't before, which was I lowered all the limits on any banking or credit cards.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: So if at of charge, like say if there's a there's a$2,000 charge, like there's a trigger that gets texted to my phone, any charges above, and I put it really low, like$500.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Uh I froze all my credit unions, like all the Equifax, Experian, and I think it's TransUnion, all the credit bureaus.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: So if anyone tries to take out a card in my name or a loan, uh it's frozen.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: They can't.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: It'll let me know.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: And then what's pretty cool is if you call your cell phone provider, what you can do is you can get your number frozen so no one can use like a SIM card and move it somewhere else, and you can lock the number so no one can actually change your number.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Because sometimes the real tricky guys, they'll switch it.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: So, like if they can make it so the two-factor authentication goes to their phone.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: So, like, no one can I have that locked down, um, and like no one can change the number.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of you're putting things in place, and then I I'm trying to think, and then like just changing passwords and make sure you're like anything on your Google Drive, don't put anything that valuable on your Google Drive.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because they should be.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: They saw a bunch of like old newsletters, and there's luckily nothing good that's that would be that interesting.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Like, what's the what's the goo crew?
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: What's the goo crew?
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: What's all these stuff written down?
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: So they got to see all of the my my newsletters from the past.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Uh that was nice that you don't have like all your passwords saved in your Google Docs, because anyone with the internet can put if they get access to it, they can take a look.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and a lot of times what they they end up trying to put time pressure on you too.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: I had no time pressure.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: That was the weird thing.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: That's what I was looking for, the time pressure.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they put no pressure on me.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Because that having our our dear mother, they put some time pressure on her and like, you gotta do it now, you gotta do it now.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: And they didn't do any of that with me.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: They went the complete opposite.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: So they knew me.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they they could they could they could figure it out.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: And they profiled you, yeah.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: But I think they grabbed my number from the online Google profile.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: That's how they most likely got me.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and then if for uh guys that are like, you know, we Josh and I own and operate our business, they'll come at you for like business stuff too.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Um, like I've gotten a lot of we get it all the time where I see these spam emails that are uh or calls, I get them a lot that are like, hey, your business is qualified for a$250,000 line of credit or whatever.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Yes, a lot of funding.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: And they're from a different bank every time.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: So I don't know what the end game is with them, but I'm not sure if that's a national, if it's real or not.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: But the thing is never the thing is literally a different, if the comes from the same number and it's a different different bank every time.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: It's and it's always an AI voice, it's not a real person.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: It's like, hey, this is Sally Smith from Fox Chase.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: It almost sounds real.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like the uh what's the uh the like the the firm in like the boiler room?
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, and then like uh and then in uh Wolf of Wall Street, they they just have like these fake kind it's like almost like JP Morgan kind of a thing, but it's like you know, JP Klein.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: Solomon and Sons.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: So um it might as well just be like prestige worldwide.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: I tell you what was nice is having an actual physical bank to go to, because I just drove to my bank and say, listen, yeah, here's what's going on.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: Can you cause I did not because I was so afraid of anything online, I didn't know what they had access to.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: I didn't know what profiles I could they get in my computer, because you think of all the movies where they're just like in your computer and they have everything.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Um, which they weren't.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: I think they just kind of went in my account and pieced.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: But it was just nice to go to a physical bank versus an online bank because I could talk to them.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Can you check my accounts?
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Can you verify this?
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: And that was that was nice to know.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: I wish you had like a count, uh, like an AI counter, like if you could just send a virus through your phone back into their stuff and just wreck their life.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: That'd be like just man.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Well, I went home because I was and I try to get home earlier on Saturday morning so I can like hang out with my my three my three lovely kids.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: And uh I was like, hey guys, sorry I was gone, and my oldest is six, youngest is two.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: So like the four and six year old know know what's going on.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Like, I just had to deal with it.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Someone tried to steal all of our money.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Uh we're like, what?
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: And they're they wanted to seek revenge immediately.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Owen's like, Dad, we gotta go to your office and go get them.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Like, they're on the computers and online.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, essentially that's what they were trying to do.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: He's grabbing his ninja size, yeah, his ninja stuff.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: But if they could, they would have stolen all of my money.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, for sure.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: They don't care that our family, they don't care that I built that up over time.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: I'm like, that's really what they would want to do.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: And so I have no mercy for them.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: No.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: Well, and so there's uh I think you you pointed out some good things of like trying to just notice that it's it if a lot of things sound too good to be true, um like just kind of double check that.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: And what I have been doing now because I get so many emails that are like some of it's is like I don't know where I get a lot of we interesting emails just from being online and being on YouTube.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: From people that like have I have genuine questions to like wanting to show me a product that I could possibly endorse.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: So what I've been doing now is I just screen capture it and I put it into Chat GBT, and I'll be like, hey, what's going on with this?
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: And then it'll it'll tell me, like, oh, this is likely a real person, and then it'll go out and verify, and so like, and then I'll I'll kind of keep hitting it and being like, because you gotta it's a good idea, it's not flaw, but it'll catch, it's like this is not real, like this is a known system.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: And that's what I could have done with my Google email because that was a legit email, but on the bottom it says, Don't we don't call you.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: And I didn't read that part because I was this guy was on the phone with me, and I was looking, I'm like, Oh, I got a real email.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Google, this is legit.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And I could have just screenshot it, giving it to chat, and be like, Hey, yep, uh, is this legit?
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Like, hang up the phone now.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: That's what it would have told me to do.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: And you could even hang up the phone and just type into chat, like, hey, this just happened, and then it'll be like that's a common scam, blah blah blah.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: And chat was quite good at getting me to lock down my stuff.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: But if chat ever goes evil and tries to take all my stuff, I'm screwed.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: I was cool to you, I was good to you.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: But uh pretty much gave me a protocol of like do this, do that.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: And like I kind of knew go to the big you go to where your money is and protect that first, right, and then work the way out.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: And then it was nice is it went into like all right, we we recovered my Google, like so.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: I I got everything recovered, and it's like, okay, we need to see any if they attached it to any of your forwarding emails, right?
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Because there's a way if you get in the Google account, you someone could read all of your emails because it gets forwarded.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: So we checked all those protocols, so I'm not sending more information that's sensitive uh over that, and like no one's connected to it than I'm aware of.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: So it was like it would it was very thorough that way.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it's a it's more than I would have done myself.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: Very good tech support of that and to verify some of this because I think that's where we're all gonna kind of end up as you're gonna need to have like a defensive AI that's almost patrolling your stuff.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: And there's a few things that can that can help.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: I was just listening to something about this uh earlier today, and it's um like using a VPN, uh like Proton's a good one that a lot of guys like, um that that can protect some of your outbound data and like mask some of that.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: And then there's another one uh that is like uh uh it's like an app that cleans up your data on your devices.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: It's called Incogni.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And it's almost like a uh janitorial service for your phone and your all your shit that's on your computer.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: So like clearing out cookies, and I think there's another one called like like delete it or something.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: It's but an incogni's one that I know is a good one.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Um, and I have no affiliation with any of these services.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: I also don't use them, so uh I'm just saying like if you wanted to like up your uh what's your your they call it digital exhaust.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's the fancy term for it.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: But every anytime you go online, you go on a you know a website or whatever, uh so much of our data is being harvested, like your your phones doing it.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: If you have a new car, uh it's monitoring everything that you say and do inside of the cab.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Uh so and then they're using that the car manufacturers are using that data and selling it to insurance brokers, and they will analyze it and then mess with your rates.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, and some people do this voluntarily and they put like a dash cam in their car.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: And so, like, if you're a good driver and like it'll lower your rates, but like I don't want anybody looking at how I drive, like that's or overhearing what you say, yeah.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Because I've been talking shit, so it's all day all day.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: So it's uh it's uh I don't want I don't want people here, but like your phone is and all of that, you're just kind of like uh you know it's like how far down the rabbit hole do you want to go?
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: And like what are you trying to protect?
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: But a lot of it's just gonna be um being able to notice these scams and like even being able to notice what AI is, and it's getting really good, especially the voice stuff.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: I feel really bad for like people our parents' age, like the boomers, because they're coming at them hard.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like they're like the biggest targets, and what they'll do a lot of is they'll call and that especially someone I I know I'm just I I would joke about me being famous and not famous, but like there's a lot of my voice online.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they can a hundred percent jack that and then they could like have a fake me call mom and say, I'm in trouble, I'm in jail, I gotta do like whatever it is, I need this money.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Yes, like don't call anyone else.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Like, and they try and like freak them out and then shoehorn them in.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: They could, you know, do stuff with like our kids, like there's a lot of high pressure stuff, yeah.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Any of the high pressure stuff, but it's we're gonna I think that's gonna be an increasingly annoying thing to deal with.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Uh so annoying.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: And then I I just think too, what what startled me about uh like getting almost falling for the scam that I went on on is like they targeted me because I was on I was a YouTuber.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: And I was like, that oh, because you're like my dream's coming true.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: And then they're like, oh no, they're trying to steal all my stuff.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sweet.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: Thanks.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: They're like, I know what buttons to push.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: They do.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: They seem to be, it's not like a one size fits all.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: They're adapting their scams to fit whatever your profile is.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just like it's annoying.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: But luckily, the uh I do now have two uh factor authentication on like the banking, the credit cards, all that kind of stuff, which I was I'm like, I thought that was annoying before.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but now I want to know and I want more more updates.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: So if anyone's curious, the government doesn't call you, yes, and neither does Google.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's emails and the government uses snail mail.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: They will not, yeah, that's right.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: They will not, they're not gonna call you.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: And they it would be it would have to be like and that's one where you could just be like, uh-uh.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: I had one of those happen a while ago.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: It was a lawyer called me, said I owed all this money in taxes, yep, but I could pay her some money.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Uh and it was a legit lawyer, but it was like they call it a phishing scam where they they just try to get your business using scare tactics.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: This was years ago.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: And I actually talked to my accountants like, oh, that's the oldest trick in the book.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: This is phishing scam.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: So if you have people you can trust, they're good to reach out to, but it it happens to you, especially if you like do anything online, you put a profile up and your numbers out there.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Yep, just be wary.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Most people are cool, but you got a few scammers.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: And it's likely that a lot of the guys that were that are listening to this podcast that are like trying to build out your your painting business, it's likely you're gonna have, you know, a Google profile online so people can find you and call you and say, like, you know, they might be interested in getting an estimate and things like that.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, but it just puts you out a little bit where b everyone has access to that info.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: So they're like, oh, I know this guy has a painting business, I know he's got revenue coming in.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: There you just become you just be more leery of that moving forward, which I feel like any of the younger guys probably are are hip to a lot of the scams.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: But it's hard to like scammers adjust.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: The the issue is like our data's being harvested by like so many things.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: So it could like our phones are listening to us right now.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: All of these are being all of our little impulses are being harvested, at least kind of passively scanned.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Uh and so, but even if you were like, okay, I have a flip phone, I have all the stuff, I'm on incogni, I have a VPN, I drive uh a friggin' Land Rover from 1972, like it's got no electronics in it, like all that stuff.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Well, if you're next to somebody that also has a phone that doesn't have any of that stuff on there, you're also being they're they're they're adding you to the the database, and then like they and then what companies are doing uh is they do it's extremely predatory pricing, um, where they're shifting prices around based on your buying behavior and your like economic status or just your buying history.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: So like uh the like the joke is too like if you if you and me talk about like any like oh Josh, I'm really interested in uh buying a new truck.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: I'm interested in Dodge Ram.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: Like like that, like that'll it'll start you'll start getting ads for it on Instagram and YouTube and all these other places.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: And I had a thing happen to me uh not too it was a couple months ago where I was this is actually like a good example.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: They got me because they got they got me to buy, uh, but I was for my my uh 10 year anniversary, I was gonna get my wife a new uh pair of uh sunglasses, like ray bands, and I had I've I wanted to get her the exact ones that I got her 10 years ago.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: So I I had them uh she had taken them off when we went to family.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: We dinner at mom and dad's house, and I picked them up and I took a picture of the uh the like the serial number and everything on it.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: So I got that, and then I it was literally the next day I went on Amazon, and that pair only of these Ray bands had been the price had been reduced by like 40%.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: It was a crazy deal.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Like they were like$140 glasses, and they were for like$82.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Only in her the color, the color and the exact glasses that I got her.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: All the other colorways were$140.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: I was like, oh shit, yeah.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: And then I I I I bought them and then and it was from like Ray Ban's website inside of Android.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: And then I was like, oh, son of a like, but but I was like, okay, that's cool.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: But how they do it too is they'll like you and me could go on Amazon on the same and look up the same thing, and your price might be different than my price.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: And then companies that have been getting really in trouble for it has been uh I think KFC did it, McDonald's just got in trouble for it.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Um, and then they're saying like there's nothing wrong with what they're doing.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, and they just say I mean it's not illegally, it's not illegal, but it's like, you know, are you serving your customer well?
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: Well, and they're doing things where uh now they're having like digital price tags inside of stores, and the price will appear when you get close to it, and then it'll be like you and me could have two different prices on like a box of Kleenex or or whatever.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: And so they're they use your your digital exhaust to then price adjust things because they're like this this fat turd loves candy bars, this is gonna call you four bucks.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: He's gonna binge on candy bars, yeah.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: So and then uh so it's just it'll that'll be interesting to see how that shakes out because I feel like a lot of um I think a lot of companies are gonna catch some ish for that.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: So people don't like that.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then yeah, so it's I don't like when it's not trans.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: Like probably the worst one is like any kind of medical care.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: I feel like some of that's getting a little bit more transparent.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Like more I've seen more doctors have more like cash rates kind of posted.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: Where that used to not be a thing.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Yes, what's because people don't pay for it themselves, that's just copay.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: And then your employer pays or the insurance pays, and it's an interesting setup.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: That's a whole nother topic.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: So, and then we'll probably we'll talk about some how to save some money on like paint supplies and stuff later.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that'll be another another topic.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: But yeah, just watch out for the scams every time.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: They're very tricky.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're tricky, and they're it's only I feel all the promises that AI has, you know, it's either gonna kill us all or create a utopia.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: I think like right now, uh, you know, the it's really helpful for um solving IT issues, running like do you use it a lot for research.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: I've been trying to run meta ads, it's fantastic.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so a lot of like if you're all the technical stuff, especially a small business owner.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: If you guys are like going through like you have to use different software and things, like super, super helpful to like guide you through that.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: Also, they're gonna use it to scam you.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: And then the other part is it's gonna have like dumb people that have or even slick people that have ill intent can now use these things to like program viruses and do run scammers.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: My scammers are smart, and at least I'm gonna pretend they were.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then it's gonna make me think about it.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: They're evil geniuses in a lair.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: Uh and so, yeah, so that it's just gonna be an interesting little we'll see how the the next thing, but it's I guarantee you the companies that are like running VPNs and stuff, they're I've already heard an advertisement for one, but it's basically like a security tool that is backed by you know AI.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: The only issue is then you then you're giving like all your stuff to an AI, you're like, Oh, this thing doesn't turn on me and just like and then there's insurance in case your identity gets stolen.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: So they have that.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, like lifelok.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, things like that.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: There's a couple of them out there.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: It's worth looking into at some point.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: Super annoying.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: It is annoying.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: So but anyway, keep it keep an eye out, particularly if you are like a business owner and stuff.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: Just if it's very if it sounds too good to be true, or like it's like, wow, this is like this is perfect.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: This is exactly what I just just be like, hey, wait, what?
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: Like, let's the salty prince wants to give me money.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: See, those were those were easy.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: I like those.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, those it's funny you like pine for the days of an easy scam.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: This guy seems legit.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: Sky seems legit.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I remember you didn't have any sons to give it to.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: They used to do one where like you were you're trapped, like uh you got arrested in Mexico, and like you gotta, and it'd be like someone who's out of the country.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, stuff like that.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: So it's you're like, oh come on, man.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: I'll do that.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: Well hey, join the goo crew, uh, click the uh link in the description uh for all you uh painters and aspiring painters out there.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Yes, uh, check that out.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, we're in there all the time.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Josh is doing new stuff in there, and um, if you're listening on something other than YouTube, subscribe to the YouTube channel, that helps out.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: So, all right, until next time, y'all take it easy, work smart, and have a good one.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Peace.
