- 0:07Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett. Well, how do you tell
- 0:19Speaker 1: someone after tragedy everything's going to be okay? How do
- 0:26Speaker 1: you do it? Because in the last twenty four hours
- 0:34Speaker 1: we've gone from one tragedy to another, tragedy that has
- 0:40Speaker 1: been mourned and now aid relief through Fire Aid LA.
- 0:49Speaker 1: We'll play a little bit of that from Billy Crystal.
- 0:51Speaker 1: It was an emotional speech tonight in La at the
- 0:56Speaker 1: Fire Aid LA concert. It was really a powerful we
- 1:00Speaker 1: play for you here. Imulling up with Alex Garrett, but
- 1:07Speaker 1: he said something about he felt things were going to
- 1:12Speaker 1: be okay. There were signs to him that said, despite
- 1:19Speaker 1: losing his home in the Palaceies, it was going to
- 1:22Speaker 1: be okay. Imagine receiving that message in such tragedy. Because
- 1:30Speaker 1: while La is healing and trying to help each other,
- 1:35Speaker 1: we have a convergence, a literal convergence of tragedies. There's
- 1:39Speaker 1: been a metaphorical convergence between what happened over the Potamic
- 1:45Speaker 1: River and the still very raw heartbreak in LA. But
- 1:57Speaker 1: this convergence calls for you, This convergence of not only
- 2:03Speaker 1: a Blackhawk helicopter crashing into an American airliner, killing many
- 2:13Speaker 1: amongst the figure skating community, including US figure skaters. It's heartbreaking,
- 2:26Speaker 1: but that convergence of the plane and the chopper should
- 2:34Speaker 1: raise real concerns. Finally, because there have been other black
- 2:44Speaker 1: Hawk chopper fatal accidents and tragedies that may not have
- 2:51Speaker 1: been detailed enough, and maybe this convergence, this tragedy midair
- 3:04Speaker 1: at Reagan National well, tell everyone, including the President United States,
- 3:14Speaker 1: to shut the f up and be unified as we
- 3:22Speaker 1: mourn the loss of now sixty seven at least sixty
- 3:26Speaker 1: seven people. Now's not the time to be funny. Now's
- 3:38Speaker 1: not the time to even make if you're an airplane
- 3:40Speaker 1: fan airplane jokes. Now's the time to rally for Massachusetts
- 3:47Speaker 1: skating community and other skating communities and just communities that
- 3:52Speaker 1: have lost loved ones tonight, oh well last night into
- 3:57Speaker 1: this morning. So you start out earlier today hearing replays
- 4:14Speaker 1: of this call.
- 4:18Speaker 2: By air traffic control, H.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I mean, and we all saw the video of the
- 4:44Speaker 1: fireball that was that crash. So this convergence of not
- 4:54Speaker 1: only aircraft, but of tragedies crashing into each other, isn't
- 5:09Speaker 1: it time to say, let's roll up our sleeves and
- 5:19Speaker 1: truly look out for each other. And I hate to
- 5:29Speaker 1: say it. I hate to say it, but as the
- 5:33Speaker 1: Biden administration ended, the Trump administration has found itself in
- 5:40Speaker 1: a convergence of crisis. And we will see how this
- 5:45Speaker 1: present deals with this crisis. But it is a convergence
- 5:50Speaker 1: of crisis because California still has not gone and fully
- 5:55Speaker 1: healed from what's happened to nearly one hundred and eighty
- 6:01Speaker 1: thousand people need to evacuate, mill to acres and houses
- 6:09Speaker 1: burned down. There's still not a resolution there. Now you
- 6:14Speaker 1: add this tragedy and everything literally is a convergence of crisis.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And maybe this convergence of crisis can finally heal us
- 6:35Speaker 1: and we can all just say enough enough, Let's all
- 6:38Speaker 1: roll up our sleeves and work together and support good
- 6:44Speaker 1: citizens who are working as first responders, as just good samaritans,
- 6:55Speaker 1: to continue to find information, certainly on this tragedy in
- 7:06Speaker 1: the sky, but also to allow citizenry to help rebuild
- 7:26Speaker 1: LA on their own without government interference saying well, if
- 7:32Speaker 1: you do this wrong, you're cann get up fine, if
- 7:34Speaker 1: you do this a certain way, you're gonna find. No,
- 7:36Speaker 1: we don't need that, we need citizenry to be able
- 7:40Speaker 1: to do what they're going to do, support their community.
- 7:45Speaker 1: That's what America is about, is rolling up our sleeves
- 7:48Speaker 1: in a time of crisis, not finding people for stepping
- 7:52Speaker 1: up in a time of crisis. And though I disagree
- 7:59Speaker 1: with I'm using the DEI tactic today when describing the
- 8:05Speaker 1: disaster at the FAA, I want to say, hearing that
- 8:16Speaker 1: this worker might have been doing two different jobs, it
- 8:22Speaker 1: kind of does show how poorly run the FAA might
- 8:28Speaker 1: have been under the previous administration. Someone working two jobs
- 8:42Speaker 1: and not being able to patrol the skies properly, that
- 8:51Speaker 1: does feel like mismanagement. And we've talked about the FAA
- 8:56Speaker 1: before allowing tons and tons of different thing, different people
- 9:07Speaker 1: to be hired without the proper vetting. But to the
- 9:14Speaker 1: worker that was working two jobs, I can't fault them.
- 9:17Speaker 1: To the pilots of this airline, I can't fault them,
- 9:25Speaker 1: And to our Department of Defense in this convergence of crisis,
- 9:33Speaker 1: I'd like to remind Secretary hug Except this, and I'm
- 9:37Speaker 1: sure a Secretary Huggs knows this, but according to military
- 9:41Speaker 1: dot Com, there were two insidants alone, just a couple
- 9:46Speaker 1: of years ago, in twenty twenty three, when the same
- 9:53Speaker 1: UAGE sixty Blackhawk was involved with deadly training cap crashes
- 10:01Speaker 1: stateside in which the twelfth Aviation Battalion haused flights and
- 10:14Speaker 1: in wake up the deadly incident that led to eleven
- 10:16Speaker 1: deaths two instance in twenty twenty three alone. But because
- 10:23Speaker 1: that did not happen in this fashion, it didn't get
- 10:30Speaker 1: a lot of coverage. But I remember that and wondering
- 10:34Speaker 1: what the hell is going on with the black Hawk
- 10:37Speaker 1: choppers helicopters. But I also know that we did lose
- 10:47Speaker 1: three Army soldiers according to military dot Com, who were
- 10:55Speaker 1: tragically killed in this crash. And this too was a
- 11:11Speaker 1: training exercise according to the Pentagon. So where did it
- 11:17Speaker 1: go wrong? And what a headache for Secretary of Hexeth
- 11:22Speaker 1: and Trump to deal with the first week of his
- 11:28Speaker 1: run as Defense Secretary. What a convergence of crisis that
- 11:36Speaker 1: this administration has been tested with already. And while you
- 11:44Speaker 1: can blame the bid administration, and all I was trying
- 11:47Speaker 1: to do was say management at the FAA could be
- 11:52Speaker 1: better if in fact two jobs were occupied with one person.
- 12:00Speaker 1: But I think if President Trump is listening, he's got
- 12:04Speaker 1: to focus on them now and then now is there's
- 12:11Speaker 1: not only a convergence of crisis in a physical way
- 12:17Speaker 1: because of this horror, there is now a convergence of
- 12:21Speaker 1: crisis because of what our country is dealt with. Our
- 12:28Speaker 1: West Coast family is dealt with cleaning up, there are
- 12:37Speaker 1: remnants of their home, and now the East Coast is
- 12:44Speaker 1: dealt with many, many, many too many memorials and funerals
- 12:55Speaker 1: following this crash. But I'm hoping, I'm praying that this
- 13:05Speaker 1: convergence of crisis, both literal and metaphorical, leads to unity
- 13:17Speaker 1: and recognizing life is precious. Time is precious, and if
- 13:25Speaker 1: the next four years are spent just arguing with each other,
- 13:28Speaker 1: that's time wasted. If it's four more years of communities
- 13:34Speaker 1: being divided over who got elected, that's time wasted. And
- 13:41Speaker 1: don't you think sixty seven families tonight would rather be
- 13:50Speaker 1: debating politics, so to speak, at Thanksgiving dinner then having
- 13:59Speaker 1: to bear their life ones on a cold February day
- 14:05Speaker 1: next week. In other words, be thankful you can debate
- 14:14Speaker 1: about who you elected or who got elected. Be thankful
- 14:21Speaker 1: you have family. Be thankful if indeed this crisis of
- 14:27Speaker 1: convergence did not hit your family today, because for sixty
- 14:36Speaker 1: seven families, they don't have that luxury. And they are also,
- 14:44Speaker 1: by the way, American families, not just figure skating families
- 14:49Speaker 1: or a champion duo that were married, a US and
- 14:53Speaker 1: Russian couple that were married and thirty years ago won
- 14:57Speaker 1: the gold and all that people. Sixty seven people were killed.
- 15:08Speaker 1: So one leg with Alex Carrett. When I have time
- 15:12Speaker 1: for this back and forth, I won't even have time
- 15:18Speaker 1: to hear about family disputes because whatever the hell I mean,
- 15:26Speaker 1: and divorced man lost his ex wife and he cared
- 15:36Speaker 1: about that. So whatever disputes you might have in this
- 15:46Speaker 1: in your family, look at this crisis of convergence and say,
- 15:55Speaker 1: let's settle all disputes right now and recognize time is precious.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Life is precious. Not only any of us have here
- 16:15Speaker 1: have time of day to constantly be in dispute. So
- 16:30Speaker 1: I hope, I hope the Trump administration learned from this
- 16:38Speaker 1: crisis of convergence in the physical and the metaphorical. And
- 16:48Speaker 1: I hope these words from Billy Crystal earlier tonight at
- 16:53Speaker 1: fieried La sticks with you and tonight's podcast.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Thank you, Hi, everybody, I'm Billy Kusta. Hello, La and
- 17:31Speaker 3: everybody watching around the world watching us, Welcome to Fireraid.
- 17:35Speaker 1: We're gathered here at the Key.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Of Form, which is Steve Bomber's guesthouse, and later we'll
- 17:45Speaker 3: be over at the fantastic Intuidome. Our goal is simple tonight,
- 17:50Speaker 3: to raise more money than a Dodger spent on free agents.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Now all kidding aside, when you don't to Fireraidla dot org.
- 18:02Speaker 3: During tonight's broadcast, Steve Bomber and his wonderful wife Connie
- 18:06Speaker 3: will match it dollar for dollar. And and just as
- 18:17Speaker 3: I was walking on stage, I got word that our
- 18:20Speaker 3: first big donation of the night has come in. It's
- 18:23Speaker 3: from this band called You Two and it's for one
- 18:30Speaker 3: million dollars, which really means two million dollars thanks to
- 18:36Speaker 3: Connie and Steve. And at home, you too can help
- 18:43Speaker 3: us by calling in. We have an amazing evening of
- 18:46Speaker 3: dozens of incredible performers coming together to help those in need.
- 18:51Speaker 3: And also you'll be hearing from a number of people
- 18:55Speaker 3: who are tragically affected by these fires, and I am
- 18:59Speaker 3: one them. These these were the clothes I wore when
- 19:08Speaker 3: I fled my house with my wife Janice. Like so
- 19:11Speaker 3: many of us did on January seventh was all I
- 19:14Speaker 3: had wore it for a week pleasant n ninety five mask.
- 19:18Speaker 3: I looked like in a vactor WI or someone who
- 19:19Speaker 3: had just robbed a seven eleven. But everybody's been so supportive.
- 19:24Speaker 3: This young girl who must have been twenty came up
- 19:27Speaker 3: to me and said she understood my pain because she
- 19:29Speaker 3: had lost TikTok for a day.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Everybody has a thing.
- 19:40Speaker 3: I wanted to be here tonight because a little over
- 19:41Speaker 3: twenty three years ago, and just a month after nine
- 19:44Speaker 3: to eleven, I was asked to welcome the audience of
- 19:47Speaker 3: the concert for New York at Madison Square Garden with
- 19:55Speaker 3: with ground zero still smoldering, I walked out to a
- 19:59Speaker 3: grieving audience holding up signs with pictures.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Of their loved ones on them.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Asking have you seen them? It was all I could
- 20:07Speaker 3: do to get my first words out, and tonight here
- 20:10Speaker 3: I am talking to all of you in pain, but
- 20:14Speaker 3: now I'm also one of the hurting thousands, asking have
- 20:19Speaker 3: you seen my school? Have you seen my church?
- 20:22Speaker 2: Have you seen my house? Have you seen my town?
- 20:26Speaker 3: Have you seen the twenty nine people who lost their lives?
- 20:29Speaker 2: Have you seen them?
- 20:31Speaker 3: On that night in two thousand and one, we were
- 20:33Speaker 3: wanting a loss of hundreds of firefighters and police officers
- 20:37Speaker 3: and first responders. Tonight, we're here together to thank them
- 20:42Speaker 3: and all those who run towards danger while we run
- 20:46Speaker 3: to shelter in safety.
- 21:01Speaker 1: When when.
- 21:06Speaker 3: When we were finally able to get back to our
- 21:09Speaker 3: house in the Palisades, which we had lived in for
- 21:12Speaker 3: forty six years, Like thousands of you, our house now
- 21:17Speaker 3: look like this. I stepped onto the grounds and I
- 21:21Speaker 3: fell to my knees and I wailed. I had not
- 21:23Speaker 3: cried like that since I was fifteen years old and
- 21:26Speaker 3: I was told that my father had just died. I
- 21:29Speaker 3: remember looking in the mirror back then, with my whole
- 21:32Speaker 3: life ahead of me, thinking what is my life going
- 21:36Speaker 3: to be like without him? Now, folks, I'm seventy six
- 21:40Speaker 3: years old, without a mirror and a lot less life
- 21:44Speaker 3: to ponder, thinking what is my life going to be
- 21:47Speaker 3: like without our home? And then I heard screams from
- 21:50Speaker 3: my daughter's dad, Dad, Dad, and my girls Jenny and
- 21:53Speaker 3: Lindsay brought over this rock from a burnt out garden.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Years ago.
- 21:57Speaker 3: I bought these rocks with one word engraved in them,
- 21:59Speaker 3: placed them around our gardens they were welcome, patience, dream
- 22:05Speaker 3: and the one I held in my hands laughter. I
- 22:09Speaker 3: learned about the power of left back in nineteen sixty three,
- 22:12Speaker 3: in our Shiver house, sitting alone, said little guy, I
- 22:16Speaker 3: heard big laughs coming from the family in our modest
- 22:18Speaker 3: living room, and I came down the hall to see
- 22:20Speaker 3: my dear uncle Bern in the midst of his sorrow,
- 22:23Speaker 3: telling stories and doing magic tricks and making the entire
- 22:26Speaker 3: family laugh. And it changed my life. I knew at
- 22:29Speaker 3: that moment, even in your worst pain, folst, it's okay,
- 22:33Speaker 3: and it's important to laugh. And I dedicated, and I
- 22:39Speaker 3: dedicated my life then, and my career then has been
- 22:43Speaker 3: able to do that throughout very difficult times, and I'm
- 22:46Speaker 3: proud of that. But when I held that rock on
- 22:49Speaker 3: my hands, this was the only thing that was left.
- 22:52Speaker 3: I felt it was a message from that fifteen year
- 22:54Speaker 3: old me saying it's going to be okay, and it
- 22:58Speaker 3: will be okay with your help around the country and
- 23:02Speaker 3: here in the room, we'll laugh again. We're gonna listen
- 23:06Speaker 3: to music again, and we will be okay. So tonight,
- 23:09Speaker 3: from Altadina to Malibu to the Pacific Palisades, let's show
- 23:14Speaker 3: the world who we are. We're Los Angeles, one city,
- 23:18Speaker 3: one hot LA strong.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I mean, just wow, just wow. I hope that moved
- 23:34Speaker 1: you as much as it moved Gabby and I hearing
- 23:38Speaker 1: that in real time. So the night's episode is titled
- 23:44Speaker 1: one having One leg Up over not just on, but
- 23:50Speaker 1: over this crisis of convergence and as communities more for
- 24:04Speaker 1: the next days and months and years. I can't even
- 24:07Speaker 1: imagine we can all have one leg up for each
- 24:13Speaker 1: other if we just stopped the bickering. I went back
- 24:20Speaker 1: to that community outreach and even in Washington, they can
- 24:32Speaker 1: have one leg up over this crisis of convergence if
- 24:34Speaker 1: they simply settled their disputes and worked together so that
- 24:46Speaker 1: these Pentagon training missions don't end up like this, so
- 24:50Speaker 1: that the FAA is fully staffed and not one person
- 24:55Speaker 1: is working multiple jobs in a very high, fast paced
- 25:00Speaker 1: air traffic control situation. I'm telling the disputes, well, help
- 25:14Speaker 1: us all have one leg up over the seemingly crisis
- 25:21Speaker 1: of convergence, both the physical and the metaphorical. We were
- 25:28Speaker 1: still talking
