- 2:30Speaker 4: this morning though, as we say goodbye to one of
- 2:32Speaker 4: her own here. When you're in this crazy business that
- 2:35Speaker 4: I've been a part of for over thirty six years.
- 2:37Speaker 3: You get to know people and you get to love them.
- 2:39Speaker 4: You want to kill them at times, but you've become
- 2:42Speaker 4: much like your workplace. You become like a family. But
- 2:45Speaker 4: in a world of broadcasting, it's a crazy, dysfunctional, stressed
- 2:48Speaker 4: out family. And this morning we're going to say goodbye
- 2:51Speaker 4: to one of those is going to be leaving us, Carrie,
- 2:53Speaker 4: who Deesect, co anchor of the morning News with Chris Lawrence.
- 2:57Speaker 4: She just rapped up her final morning newscast with Chris,
- 3:01Speaker 4: and she's got a little bit of work to do
- 3:03Speaker 4: around the office before we confiscate your key card to
- 3:07Speaker 4: get in the building.
- 3:07Speaker 5: You know that, right, Yeah, I won't be allowed back
- 3:09Speaker 5: up to it was gonna say.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Jenkins is not going to let you. He's got assignments
- 3:13Speaker 4: for you. But you got a couple more hours here, right.
- 3:15Speaker 5: But yeah, we'll still do about maybe two more stories.
- 3:18Speaker 3: At this point.
- 3:18Speaker 4: What are you going to do just to go on
- 3:20Speaker 4: the website and say some stuff happened and then leave.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Ex So, this guy did this, this guy did that.
- 3:25Speaker 4: And I'm gone carry It's been kind of a wild
- 3:28Speaker 4: ride for you because you joined this crazy company twice.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Tell us how you got here the first time?
- 3:33Speaker 6: Sure, So I started here in February of twenty fifteen,
- 3:38Speaker 6: nine years ago, already crazy to think about. But I
- 3:41Speaker 6: was just twenty three years old, and I had been
- 3:44Speaker 6: working in Philadelphia. I had graduated college, and I was
- 3:47Speaker 6: a big station KYW news radio there and I was
- 3:50Speaker 6: a desk assistant, just answering phone calls. And I wanted
- 3:53Speaker 6: more than anything, just to get out in the field
- 3:56Speaker 6: and to tell stories. But when you grow up, you're
- 3:59Speaker 6: a big more mart I grew up right outside Philadelphia
- 4:01Speaker 6: and New York. You can't just become a reporter in
- 4:03Speaker 6: a top you know, ten media market. And so people
- 4:07Speaker 6: were telling me, well, you have two options. You can
- 4:09Speaker 6: stick it out here and see if you've become a
- 4:11Speaker 6: reporter within the next ten years or so. And I thought, well,
- 4:14Speaker 6: I don't want to do that, or you can move
- 4:16Speaker 6: to a small city. And so I started putting out
- 4:18Speaker 6: resumes and Charleston, West Virginia was interested in Jeff and Hoppy.
- 4:23Speaker 6: They reached out to me and they said, hey, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 6: we know you're you knew it and you're new at
- 4:27Speaker 6: all this, but we want.
- 4:28Speaker 5: To give you a shot.
- 4:29Speaker 6: And I thought, wow, somebody likes my work. And I've
- 4:32Speaker 6: I've never been on the air before. I've just kind
- 4:34Speaker 6: of reported stories in college and stuff.
- 4:36Speaker 5: And so I came down here and.
- 4:38Speaker 6: Moved two blocks from the station, and Jeff hired me
- 4:42Speaker 6: on the spot and said, yeah, he put me on
- 4:44Speaker 6: the air the second day I was here, and I
- 4:47Speaker 6: was scared, like I couldn't even I was so nervous.
- 4:51Speaker 5: I was shaking, and now.
- 4:52Speaker 6: It's just so natural to have a microphone in front
- 4:54Speaker 6: of my face. But then I had You're right, I left.
- 4:58Speaker 6: I was here for three years, and then I just
- 5:01Speaker 6: had this big market bug itch I was. I wanted
- 5:04Speaker 6: to get to some place where I could really hone
- 5:06Speaker 6: my skills, and I really did that here in West Virginia.
- 5:09Speaker 6: But I thought, this is a dream of mine. I
- 5:11Speaker 6: want to go someplace big. And I knew that maybe
- 5:14Speaker 6: wasn't New York or Philadelphia to go back home, but
- 5:16Speaker 6: somewhere in the country. I was willing to just sink
- 5:19Speaker 6: my teeth into local news and do cover even bigger
- 5:22Speaker 6: stories with you know, a bigger audience. And so I
- 5:26Speaker 6: got a job off ro oute in San Francisco, and
- 5:28Speaker 6: so I moved out there. I was a reporter and
- 5:30Speaker 6: anchor for KCBS Radio.
- 5:31Speaker 4: And for those who don't know that, that's that's as
- 5:34Speaker 4: good as it gets out there.
- 5:35Speaker 6: Yeah, it's the West Coast affiliate of well it was
- 5:37Speaker 6: CBS Radio at the time. Well they were enter Common Odyssey.
- 5:40Speaker 6: They changed a couple of times, but yeah, that was
- 5:42Speaker 6: that was great, and it was such a different lifestyle
- 5:45Speaker 6: out there. I got to see and do so many things.
- 5:47Speaker 6: I was there during COVID, I was there during all
- 5:49Speaker 6: those big protests that were happening. It was just a
- 5:51Speaker 6: crazy time to be there. But I was on under
- 5:55Speaker 6: a three year contract and I thought, well, I could
- 5:56Speaker 6: stay here or move on, and so I was kind
- 5:59Speaker 6: of a applying to other jobs at the time, and
- 6:02Speaker 6: I got a call from Chris and everybody back here
- 6:06Speaker 6: saying hey, uh SHAWNA. Johnson, who was the previous morning
- 6:08Speaker 6: anchor here with Chris, had been leaving, and they thought, well,
- 6:11Speaker 6: let's see if we can call Carrie and get her back.
- 6:14Speaker 6: And when Chris called, I thought, well, I don't know
- 6:16Speaker 6: if I'm going to come back to West Virginia. It
- 6:18Speaker 6: was really a stepping stone. Nothing against Charleston, West Virginia.
- 6:21Speaker 6: I loved everybody here and then covering news here, but
- 6:24Speaker 6: I couldn't see myself coming back. I wanted to move
- 6:27Speaker 6: to New York Philadelphia and didn't have any other job offers.
- 6:31Speaker 6: Nothing else was panning out, and I thought why not, why.
- 6:33Speaker 7: Not come back?
- 6:34Speaker 6: And it felt like home. It is a second home.
- 6:36Speaker 6: I always call it my home away from home. And
- 6:39Speaker 6: I came back, and it's funny because when you leave
- 6:42Speaker 6: a job and then you come back, not many people
- 6:44Speaker 6: do that. People were hugging me and like saying welcome home,
- 6:48Speaker 6: and you just you don't get that on your first
- 6:49Speaker 6: day of work normally at a new job. And so yeah,
- 6:52Speaker 6: I came back in twenty twenty one. So I've been
- 6:54Speaker 6: here now for three years. So I've been here six
- 6:56Speaker 6: years total.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Okay, and again we're talking with carry who to sec
- 6:59Speaker 4: who's going to be leaving this today is her final day.
- 7:01Speaker 4: So I guess the number one question and I did
- 7:03Speaker 4: morning radio for twenty years, the number one question you
- 7:06Speaker 4: get is what time do you get up in the morning.
- 7:09Speaker 4: My I was always more interested though in people would
- 7:12Speaker 4: ask me what time you go to bed at night,
- 7:14Speaker 4: and I always just said, what you don't really set
- 7:16Speaker 4: a time, It just kind of happens. Yeah, but getting
- 7:19Speaker 4: up and going to bed, what time is that?
- 7:20Speaker 6: So I get up around three am. Depends sometimes what's
- 7:25Speaker 6: happening if I need to get in a little earlier,
- 7:27Speaker 6: but it's typically three am. I really start writing the
- 7:30Speaker 6: morning news at around three forty five four AM, but
- 7:34Speaker 6: typically go to bed around I start.
- 7:36Speaker 5: Winding down for the night.
- 7:37Speaker 6: I guess you can say that at around seven seven thirty,
- 7:41Speaker 6: but I don't really close my eyes until probably eight thirty.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Real estate probably a foreign concept of so many people
- 7:46Speaker 4: out there, but for people that do morning radio staying
- 7:49Speaker 4: up past nine o'clock, it's also a foreign concept as well.
- 7:52Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, And.
- 7:53Speaker 6: Then a lot of times, like during the holidays, Chris
- 7:55Speaker 6: and I would host the Charleston Christmas Parade, or we
- 7:57Speaker 6: have the election where we have to do the morning
- 7:59Speaker 6: news and and come back in at night, and that's
- 8:01Speaker 6: always a juggle.
- 8:02Speaker 4: And many times when we talked about this, you you well,
- 8:05Speaker 4: you and Chris don't leave. You just stay here, yeah,
- 8:07Speaker 4: for the election, right, for the election.
- 8:09Speaker 3: So you're going to be moving on from us, but
- 8:10Speaker 3: you're staying around at the air.
- 8:11Speaker 6: I am, yes, And so I haven't put this post
- 8:14Speaker 6: out yet, but I will, but I'm going to announce
- 8:16Speaker 6: it now that I am staying in Charleston. I'm going
- 8:19Speaker 6: to go work for the State Treasurer's office and I'm
- 8:22Speaker 6: going to be the assistant director of communications there for
- 8:24Speaker 6: Riley Moore.
- 8:25Speaker 4: That will be awesome. Hey, look, some of your friends
- 8:27Speaker 4: have come in. Uh, We've got a cast of thousands
- 8:32Speaker 4: that are coming into the studio here because they wanted to.
- 8:36Speaker 3: They wanted they want to tell you goodbye.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Uh So we got Fred, we got Murph, we got sales, weasels,
- 8:42Speaker 4: we got.
- 8:43Speaker 5: I promised myself I wouldn't cry again.
- 8:45Speaker 3: We got Marilyn mccauloff. Who's the next guest here.
- 8:49Speaker 5: That's why she's here.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Hey, Merrily, you want a job. I know there's one open.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I'm just it's all on that.
- 8:56Speaker 4: And let me start with Joe Parson. Joe, you would
- 8:58Speaker 4: you like to say something here? On me make sure
- 9:00Speaker 4: his microphone's on there. I did my part.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 9:03Speaker 8: You're not allowed to leave.
- 9:05Speaker 6: Everyone has been so sad and bitter around here. Let
- 9:08Speaker 6: me tell you, but I understand why I'm not.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I'm sad because you're leaving, but I'm not sad for you.
- 9:16Speaker 8: I wish you the best of luck.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Thank you, Joe.
- 9:18Speaker 4: All right, Fred, you can go back to sleep in
- 9:22Speaker 4: ten minutes.
- 9:24Speaker 5: Made me cry on Friday, made her cry on.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Don't do it today all over the equipment.
- 9:28Speaker 8: Almost made her cry this morning.
- 9:29Speaker 9: All right, I have.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Been crying like a baby.
- 9:32Speaker 8: As Joe said, You're going to be missed, there's no question.
- 9:34Speaker 8: But the very best to you. Okay, and you're not leaving.
- 9:37Speaker 10: Town, no, and knowing the way politics are, you'll be
- 9:40Speaker 10: backing for you anyway.
- 9:42Speaker 3: And that's how he made you cry. Okay, that's how
- 9:44Speaker 3: the story is.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Coop, let me bring you up here. I'm gonna save
- 9:46Speaker 4: you for last.
- 9:47Speaker 11: But Coop, well, I was over the moon glad when
- 9:51Speaker 11: Kerry came back here a couple of years ago, the
- 9:54Speaker 11: consummate professional. And I know you have news in your blood,
- 9:56Speaker 11: but I also know that there's other things in life
- 9:58Speaker 11: and that you need to to take care of Carrie,
- 10:01Speaker 11: and I know that you're gonna do great things regardless
- 10:04Speaker 11: of what path it is that you take. So congratulations
- 10:06Speaker 11: and we're gonna miss you, but good luck you.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Maybe Jenny and Steve let me get did see Steve?
- 10:14Speaker 3: See Steve?
- 10:15Speaker 4: Come in, Steve Bishop, Yeah, you guys come up here.
- 10:19Speaker 12: Carrie's been doing our news for us for since she's
- 10:21Speaker 12: been back, and uh, we don't get to see her
- 10:24Speaker 12: a lot, but we get to hear her a lot.
- 10:27Speaker 12: And uh again, we're just we're glad you came back,
- 10:30Speaker 12: and we're sad to see you, Lee, but we know
- 10:31Speaker 12: we're going to see you again.
- 10:32Speaker 10: And I did wonder out loud this morning. If you
- 10:35Speaker 10: would really matter if I came over and said I'm
- 10:37Speaker 10: going to miss you, of.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Course it does.
- 10:39Speaker 10: Okay, so you are right. I predicted you wouldn't. So anyway,
- 10:44Speaker 10: best of luck to you. We are going to miss you.
- 10:46Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna bring in Steve Animal here for
- 10:48Speaker 4: a moment.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Hit the delay, make the get the delay ready, all right, and.
- 10:53Speaker 13: I'm going to behave I'm going to miss our passings
- 10:56Speaker 13: as you head for coffee like every thirty minutes, and
- 10:59Speaker 13: we don't to each other. It's just a nod.
- 11:03Speaker 6: That's what a lot of morning radio people just like,
- 11:05Speaker 6: don't talk to me until it's like, do.
- 11:08Speaker 13: I really have to say anything to this person? Grunting?
- 11:13Speaker 13: So good luck, have fun, Thank you so much, and
- 11:16Speaker 13: if you need us, call away and I'll get that
- 11:18Speaker 13: twenty bucks.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Back to your cat.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Cat Skelled is one of the newest members of our
- 11:23Speaker 4: of our team here, and I know you've been kind
- 11:25Speaker 4: of a mentor to Cat, So go.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Ahead, cap the mic. I have to luner the mic.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Of course you can't say that.
- 11:33Speaker 5: All too.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Well.
- 11:36Speaker 14: You know, it's just been really great working with you
- 11:38Speaker 14: these pasts. I've been here for like a year and
- 11:40Speaker 14: a half or so, and you know, you've really helped
- 11:43Speaker 14: me so much just uh, you know, construct the newscasts
- 11:47Speaker 14: and all that. So I'm gonna I really took your
- 11:51Speaker 14: you know, mentorship to heart and yeah, thank you so much.
- 11:55Speaker 3: All right, Uh, Chris, you get to go last.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Mannybody else wants to say anything, It's fine, but I'm
- 12:01Speaker 4: trying to get I do it.
- 12:03Speaker 3: You're out the door at nine twenty because I have
- 12:04Speaker 3: another guess.
- 12:05Speaker 15: So sorry, but but Chris, I have to raise the
- 12:09Speaker 15: mic back up after cat there. I've dreaded this moment
- 12:15Speaker 15: for a long time. I'm hoping it would never come.
- 12:18Speaker 15: I was hoping that you just I was hoping that
- 12:21Speaker 15: I would just retire and uh and you would take
- 12:23Speaker 15: my job. That's what I was That's the way I
- 12:25Speaker 15: envisioned it exactly. Yes, and there if you if you
- 12:29Speaker 15: look at my Facebook, there is video of Carrie running
- 12:31Speaker 15: a turkey call. I didn't teach her how to use
- 12:33Speaker 15: how to do that.
- 12:33Speaker 3: One of the most iconic moments in the history of reading.
- 12:36Speaker 15: Very much, so very and also a few months ago,
- 12:38Speaker 15: I took you to the shooting range.
- 12:40Speaker 3: I taught you how to shoot so I never shot
- 12:43Speaker 3: a gun.
- 12:44Speaker 5: This New Jersey girl doesn't do it.
- 12:45Speaker 3: And you're from Jersey, right, you shot again, and I
- 12:48Speaker 3: would only.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Do it for the first time with Chris Lawrence.
- 12:50Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 15: So one Sunday afternoon we went out to the shooting
- 12:53Speaker 15: range and uh, and I let her shoot the whole
- 12:55Speaker 15: arsenal that I had ammunition for that day. So uh,
- 12:59Speaker 15: and she she did like the AR fifteen. She said
- 13:01Speaker 15: that it was a lot.
- 13:03Speaker 3: She shot it.
- 13:03Speaker 15: She went, Wow, that thing is powerful, and then she
- 13:05Speaker 15: kept shooting it. So Chase Crisp back to his car. Yeah,
- 13:11Speaker 15: well there's still bullet holes in the door. So so,
- 13:13Speaker 15: but I when when when Shauna left? You're the third
- 13:18Speaker 15: person I've run off from this job. When when Shawna left?
- 13:22Speaker 15: We were talking about who who could we get to
- 13:24Speaker 15: do this? And I told at the time our gmdal
- 13:28Speaker 15: Miller was talking to me about it, and I said,
- 13:30Speaker 15: if I could make wave a magic wand I would
- 13:33Speaker 15: want to go get Carrie and bring her back.
- 13:35Speaker 3: But I don't know.
- 13:36Speaker 15: If she'll leave San Francisco. And Dale, who was so eloquent,
- 13:39Speaker 15: said call her up, make her calm. So I called
- 13:44Speaker 15: you from my car. I was in my car sitting
- 13:47Speaker 15: in the garage, and you were getting ready because you
- 13:49Speaker 15: were in California.
- 13:50Speaker 5: I was working from home.
- 13:51Speaker 15: It was afternoon, and I and it was in the afternoon.
- 13:54Speaker 15: I had just gotten home. I sat in my garage
- 13:56Speaker 15: and she answered, and I said, before you say no,
- 14:01Speaker 15: hear me out, which, oddly enough, is the way that
- 14:04Speaker 15: Chris proposed to his wife.
- 14:05Speaker 16: Yeah, she still hasn't said yet.
- 14:10Speaker 3: I'm on. Yes, I'm on a trial basis with her.
- 14:12Speaker 15: But but yeah, and uh, And I told you, you know,
- 14:15Speaker 15: i'd love to have you come back. And you were
- 14:17Speaker 15: in a position then where your contract was coming up
- 14:19Speaker 15: and you were wanting to get back to an Eastern
- 14:21Speaker 15: time zone to be closer to your family, and and
- 14:26Speaker 15: I remember you saying, well, I can't come for a month.
- 14:29Speaker 15: And I was like, we'll wait.
- 14:31Speaker 5: It was like or something, Yeah exactly.
- 14:34Speaker 15: I was like, don't worry, we'll wait. And we did.
- 14:36Speaker 15: And it was the it was the best decision we made.
- 14:38Speaker 15: And we're so happy to get you back. But sometimes
- 14:42Speaker 15: things change. And and as much as I hate to
- 14:44Speaker 15: see you go, I know that the Treasurer's office is
- 14:46Speaker 15: gonna going to get a good one and they're going
- 14:49Speaker 15: to be very fortunate. So, uh, there's no crime in
- 14:53Speaker 15: the newsroom, by the way.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Yeah, well, carry we wanted to assemble people. I'm gonna
- 14:58Speaker 4: give you like the last thirty seconds or so, so
- 15:00Speaker 4: whatever you want to say to not only this munch
- 15:03Speaker 4: but also the listeners as well, So go ahead.
- 15:05Speaker 6: Well, my voice cracked on that nine OZHO three newscast
- 15:07Speaker 6: I did, and they said it's going to crack again,
- 15:09Speaker 6: because this was my first radio job, and I was
- 15:17Speaker 6: so nervous to say, you're listening to five eight WCCHS
- 15:20Speaker 6: the voice of Charleston. And I said it with such
- 15:24Speaker 6: power and conviction just now. And I just can't believe
- 15:28Speaker 6: how far I've came, how many people I've met, and
- 15:30Speaker 6: how many people have supported me in this career. And
- 15:33Speaker 6: somebody said, congratulations on your broadcasting career, and I just
- 15:37Speaker 6: didn't think that it was ever going to end.
- 15:40Speaker 5: But I think this is the best thing for me.
- 15:43Speaker 6: And I just want to say thank you to everyone
- 15:45Speaker 6: out there who's listening, who's trusted me, who's wanted to
- 15:49Speaker 6: even come up and talk to me about their lives
- 15:52Speaker 6: and what's going on in West Virginia and this Charleston
- 15:54Speaker 6: area and everybody here that I've met along the way
- 15:58Speaker 6: that's not only been a colleague, coworker, but also a
- 16:01Speaker 6: friend to you. All are my second family and that's
- 16:05Speaker 6: why I came home. So thank you so much.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Kerry who is sick. Ladies and gentlemen.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Now Jenkins is over here going the pointing at his watch,

- 16:22Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 16:23Speaker 4: We are, you know, like I said, a dysfunctional family
- 16:25Speaker 4: up here, but my god, it's our family.
- 16:27Speaker 3: So Carrie hoo to sick.
- 16:29Speaker 4: We wish you the best. Let me read a couple
- 16:30Speaker 4: of quick texts. Everybody asks your text says man, I
- 16:32Speaker 4: really like Carrie. Going to miss her on the radio.

- 16:46Speaker 4: and all the best to Carry.
- 16:47Speaker 3: She's been the best, says the texture.

- 19:10Speaker 4: How are you doing WWTV thirteen.
- 19:12Speaker 9: Oh so glad to be here. And one of the
- 19:15Speaker 9: gentlemen in the room said, top that tough, the top Carrie.
- 19:19Speaker 9: I love Carrie, happy for sad to see her go.
- 19:23Speaker 9: But I know she's going to do big things. But
- 19:25Speaker 9: viewers have been so lucky to have her here. Glad
- 19:27Speaker 9: she's not leaving.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Charleston State government doesn't know what they're getting when a
- 19:31Speaker 4: hurricane New Jersey girl goes over there.
- 19:33Speaker 7: She's wonderful.
- 19:34Speaker 9: She's a wonderful person, very kind and very talented and
- 19:37Speaker 9: a true professional.
- 19:38Speaker 3: All right, So I got you here to talk about
- 19:40Speaker 3: girls not Out.
- 19:41Speaker 9: Yeah, y wsa's having girls Night Out and as you
- 19:44Speaker 9: all know, it's a party with a purpose. It's going
- 19:46Speaker 9: to be a terrific time. It's happening this Saturday, so
- 19:48Speaker 9: you still have time to get some tickets. They go
- 19:51Speaker 9: all out with this party. If you haven't been, I
- 19:53Speaker 9: highly recommend looking into this. It's happening Saturday, and the
- 19:58Speaker 9: theme this year is all dauled up, so think pink
- 20:01Speaker 9: for sure. It's going to be a terrific time. The
- 20:04Speaker 9: decor is spectacular. The food and drink is even better,
- 20:07Speaker 9: and we got DJ EJ spin in the tunes.
- 20:10Speaker 7: Be a good time.
- 20:11Speaker 4: And the money goes to YWCA and their programs. Break
- 20:14Speaker 4: that down for us a.
- 20:15Speaker 7: Little bit, correct.
- 20:15Speaker 9: So the event raises money and awareness for the YWCA
- 20:20Speaker 9: Resolved Family Abuse program that serves victims of domestic violence
- 20:24Speaker 9: and their children. And they cover a lot of ground too, Canaw, Boon,
- 20:28Speaker 9: and Putnam Counties and they help more than five thousand
- 20:32Speaker 9: individuals each year. Excuse me, canall Clay and Boone counties.
- 20:38Speaker 9: But they do a lot of work. They offer case management,
- 20:40Speaker 9: court advocacy, and counseling. They have support groups too, and
- 20:45Speaker 9: safety planning. They monitor parent child visitation exchanges as well.
- 20:49Speaker 9: They just provide all of the necessary resources for someone
- 20:52Speaker 9: experiencing a domestic violence situation.
- 20:55Speaker 4: So talk about your involvement in this. I mean, I know,
- 20:58Speaker 4: your your station, WOWK, you know is involved in this,
- 21:01Speaker 4: and pretty much every media outlet in Charleston one way
- 21:03Speaker 4: or the other gets involved in this and covers and whatever.
- 21:05Speaker 3: But what about this for you personally?
- 21:08Speaker 9: Well, this isn't I'll be m seeing the event. So
- 21:12Speaker 9: but I do I think that their their mission is
- 21:14Speaker 9: very important. When these things happen to people, they find
- 21:18Speaker 9: themselves their world is flipped upside down and they don't
- 21:21Speaker 9: know where to turn, and oftentimes they're shamed or embarrassed.
- 21:24Speaker 9: And and without the y w c A, especially if
- 21:27Speaker 9: someone doesn't have family in the area or no where
- 21:30Speaker 9: to turn, it can be a very scary situation. You
- 21:33Speaker 9: factor children into the equation as well. It's uh, it's
- 21:37Speaker 9: it's a tough situation to be in and traumatic for folks.
- 21:40Speaker 9: So the y w c A without them here, there
- 21:42Speaker 9: would be folks really really not knowing where to go,
- 21:46Speaker 9: not knowing where to turn.
- 21:47Speaker 4: And this event has just gotten bigger and bigger over
- 21:49Speaker 4: the years. And this is almost spend another day on this.
- 21:51Speaker 4: I've got Sandy call Uh coming in on Friday to
- 21:54Speaker 4: talk about it as well. But I want to because
- 21:55Speaker 4: I think it's such an important event that we need
- 21:58Speaker 4: to give it a little bit of extra time. And
- 22:00Speaker 4: as far as the actual event itself, you said it's
- 22:04Speaker 4: a different theme every year that make us such a
- 22:06Speaker 4: big deal out of what's the theme going to be.
- 22:08Speaker 4: I'm sure it's like kind of Barbie influenced this year,
- 22:11Speaker 4: and it's an excuse for people to just totally engross
- 22:16Speaker 4: themselves in the theme, and that's what happens every year.
- 22:18Speaker 7: Well, yeah, you know, I'm always impressed with Sandy.
- 22:20Speaker 9: She always has she goes above and beyond and over
- 22:23Speaker 9: the top and gets really dressed up. And I mean
- 22:25Speaker 9: some folks will wear pretty much a costume, and this
- 22:27Speaker 9: one seems like that would be a perfect one to do.
- 22:31Speaker 9: So yeah, the themes each year are always always great
- 22:33Speaker 9: and people find a fun way to make a spin
- 22:36Speaker 9: on it. I mean there's always going to be bright
- 22:38Speaker 9: colors and sequence. But when you throw out the theme,
- 22:41Speaker 9: it's like Barbie. I mean, it's going to be a
- 22:43Speaker 9: great time. So I'm always impressed with how they do
- 22:46Speaker 9: the themes each year, and so people just.
- 22:48Speaker 7: Show up really.
- 22:52Speaker 9: Doing whatever they can to be creative with the theme.
- 22:56Speaker 3: If that makes sense, it does indeed.
- 22:57Speaker 4: But Dave Allen showing five eighty Live broad to you part
- 23:00Speaker 4: about Pinnacle Consultants. Their services involved developing comprehensive management plans
- 23:04Speaker 4: to outline UH strategies for controlling and minimizing as best
- 23:07Speaker 4: so exposure perfect for commercial property owners and manager physic
- 23:11Speaker 4: Pinnacle court dot net because what you don't know can
- 23:13Speaker 4: hurt you. And I can tell you having worked the
- 23:16Speaker 4: event a couple of times in the past, not you know,
- 23:18Speaker 4: I mean, can you give a bunch of guys a
- 23:20Speaker 4: service waiter or at least it's what they used to
- 23:22Speaker 4: do or do they still do that?
- 23:23Speaker 7: You're right.
- 23:23Speaker 9: So it's it's girls night out and it's girls attend
- 23:27Speaker 9: but the guys also volunteer. So I act in the
- 23:30Speaker 9: capacity of serving drinks and you know, walking around and
- 23:33Speaker 9: catering to all the ladies. It is so fun if
- 23:35Speaker 9: if you haven't been, I would really encourage it for
- 23:38Speaker 9: the ladies listening and uh.
- 23:40Speaker 4: And what about the guys if they want to get
- 23:41Speaker 4: involved a volunteer, I mean, is it still is it
- 23:43Speaker 4: too late for that or can they So.
- 23:44Speaker 9: If you're still interested in volunteering even last minute, sponsorships
- 23:47Speaker 9: are available, So if you go to YWCA Charleston dot
- 23:51Speaker 9: org there's information on sponsorships and UH and ticket information
- 23:54Speaker 9: and also the important work that the YWCA does. And
- 23:58Speaker 9: like I say, they do dress up and costumes and
- 24:00Speaker 9: they really put their own spin on it. It's just
- 24:03Speaker 9: a wonderful time. It's a party with a purpose for sure.
- 24:06Speaker 4: I love the tagline. It's what it's been for years.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Party with a purpose, and that's what it is because
- 24:10Speaker 4: there is a lot of fun that goes into this
- 24:12Speaker 4: and a lot of as you said that with the
- 24:14Speaker 4: costumes and the music and the so on and so forth.
- 24:16Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, it's.
- 24:17Speaker 7: About the cost totally right.
- 24:19Speaker 3: And the food is always good too.
- 24:21Speaker 7: It's this was actually ten years ago.
- 24:24Speaker 9: This was the first event party that I went to
- 24:28Speaker 9: in Charleston and my mind was blown. It was at
- 24:30Speaker 9: the airport then, but now it's over at the Colossuming
- 24:34Speaker 9: Convention Center.
- 24:35Speaker 7: So it's just they go all out.
- 24:37Speaker 4: It's so impressive, it is, indeed, and so let's we'll
- 24:40Speaker 4: put a final wrap on it by saying tickets are available,
- 24:43Speaker 4: to give us the website again, and then we got
- 24:44Speaker 4: some other things you and I are going to talk about.
- 24:46Speaker 3: But go ahead, sure.
- 24:47Speaker 9: Why WUCA Charleston dot org. It's a party with a purpose.
- 24:51Speaker 9: It's for a good cause, and I encourage everyone to.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Check it out and the where and the win.
- 24:55Speaker 9: Saturday August tenth, the kickoff time, I want to say seven.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Okay, all right, close enough anyway, get.
- 25:03Speaker 4: The Saturday evening, get there at five yeah, and it's where.
- 25:06Speaker 7: It's going to via the Colisseum at.
- 25:08Speaker 4: The Colosseum Convention because I know one year, at least
- 25:10Speaker 4: one year they did it actually outside on the Capitol grounds.
- 25:13Speaker 4: That's one of the ones that I worked as a volunteer.
- 25:15Speaker 4: You got a little bit warm out there.
- 25:17Speaker 7: So we're inside now, inside the.

- 25:44Speaker 4: that you got to come in there for the carry
- 25:46Speaker 4: hoo to SEC exit party there because it was funny
- 25:49Speaker 4: because I was trying to organize this whole thing and
- 25:51Speaker 4: trying to She knew she was going to be on
- 25:53Speaker 4: the air, but she didn't know everybody was coming in,
- 25:56Speaker 4: and so I'm texting while I'm talking, and I got
- 25:58Speaker 4: a whole bunch of people out here in the hall,
- 25:59Speaker 4: and I'm like, Okay, all right, bring them in, And
- 26:01Speaker 4: right in the middle of them is Marrily mccallof. I
- 26:03Speaker 4: was like, oh, and Merrily, he's here too.
- 26:04Speaker 9: So so you just kind of crashed it.
- 26:07Speaker 3: That's all I told you yesterday. You were more than
- 26:10Speaker 3: welcome to come in.
- 26:11Speaker 7: So Carrie is just terrific.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Oh.
- 26:12Speaker 9: I can't say enough good things about her. She's really
- 26:14Speaker 9: been terrific to have around.
- 26:16Speaker 4: And you're somebody, I mean, you weren't from as far
- 26:18Speaker 4: away as Jersey, I mean, but you know, you you've
- 26:21Speaker 4: kind of a I'm not saying forever, because you never
- 26:23Speaker 4: know what happens, but you've kind of adopted the Charleston
- 26:26Speaker 4: Huntington area as your home too.
- 26:27Speaker 7: It's my home.
- 26:28Speaker 9: It's I hate to say this in a way, when
- 26:30Speaker 9: I do go home, I'm originally from Richmond, Virginia, and
- 26:32Speaker 9: when I do go home, it doesn't feel like I'm
- 26:34Speaker 9: going home anymore. I know that might sound bad to
- 26:37Speaker 9: my family back home, but you know, it's like this
- 26:40Speaker 9: is home for me.
- 26:41Speaker 7: I love it.
- 26:41Speaker 9: Here. I love Appalachi. I love West Virginia. And one
- 26:44Speaker 9: thing that I have noticed is my friend's from the
- 26:46Speaker 9: West coast or out of out of state, but mostly California.
- 26:50Speaker 7: Folks will tell you, wow, everyone here is.
- 26:52Speaker 9: So nice, and and after you hear that so many times,
- 26:54Speaker 9: you really realize, like people here are so friendly. Well,
- 26:58Speaker 9: everyone here is just so nice. And I've I just
- 27:00Speaker 9: love it here so much. This is a great place,
- 27:02Speaker 9: and I'm so happy to call West Virginia home.
- 27:05Speaker 4: And what's different for people like me who is you know,
- 27:10Speaker 4: a West Virginia native and have spent almost my entire
- 27:12Speaker 4: life here.
- 27:14Speaker 3: I think everybody's that way, you know, because this is
- 27:16Speaker 3: what I grew up with.
- 27:17Speaker 4: And then I go to Chicago or Pittsburgh some places
- 27:20Speaker 4: that I go on.
- 27:20Speaker 3: My everybody ain't that way. Yeah, it's kind of Ryan
- 27:25Speaker 3: producer wanted me to remind he he's also from Richmond.
- 27:28Speaker 7: Oh that's right, four brother, Now you.
- 27:31Speaker 4: Want to go start talking in the language that nobody
- 27:32Speaker 4: else understands. Just that's Richmond, Richmond East. I know you
- 27:35Speaker 4: had one other thing you wanted to plug, and I
- 27:37Speaker 4: told you that you could only if we could plug
- 27:40Speaker 4: our similar events. So but listen, it all goes to
- 27:44Speaker 4: help out some people in need as we head into
- 27:46Speaker 4: the school season. So you start with yours and I'll
- 27:48Speaker 4: finish with mine.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Go ahead, hey deal.
- 27:50Speaker 9: So we over at thirteen news WOWK we have our
- 27:54Speaker 9: Fill the Bus campaign.
- 27:55Speaker 7: We do it every year.
- 27:56Speaker 9: We just encourage folks to, you know, stop by the
- 27:58Speaker 9: grocery store or the the walmart all the way home Pigley,
- 28:02Speaker 9: Wiggley or somewhere and pick up some school supplies and
- 28:05Speaker 9: you can drop them off. We have several locations throughout
- 28:08Speaker 9: the area and it helps students in need. It can
- 28:11Speaker 9: be really tough for parents to get all of those
- 28:14Speaker 9: supplies together, so if we can help them in any way,
- 28:18Speaker 9: we are so happy to do that. So we've got
- 28:20Speaker 9: our Fill of the Bus campaign and if you'd like
- 28:22Speaker 9: to take part, had to do wo WUK TV dot
- 28:25Speaker 9: com and we have all the drop off locations listed there,
- 28:28Speaker 9: so find one near your house and just drop off
- 28:30Speaker 9: some school supplies. And and yes they're competing, I suppose, however,
- 28:34Speaker 9: it all goes to the children in our area and
- 28:36Speaker 9: that's and so if you can't do this one, do yours.
- 28:40Speaker 4: And I think a couple of the other stations are
- 28:42Speaker 4: doing things too, so it's all it all kind of
- 28:44Speaker 4: goes together. Ours is one week from today on our
- 28:47Speaker 4: parking lot out here, the annual Backpack Attack. We do
- 28:50Speaker 4: it every year. This is something that he woulds had
- 28:53Speaker 4: an idea to do years and years and years ago.
- 28:55Speaker 4: The soon to be a Hall of Famer what he was.

- 34:45Speaker 4: that a little bit more. Plus your calls and text
- 34:48Speaker 4: are welcome to hoppykach Full ten oh six with talk
- 34:51Speaker 4: Line on a humorous note about the choice of Walls
- 34:54Speaker 4: for vice president. The story is I heard this this
- 34:57Speaker 4: morning on ABC News when Kamala Harris may the first call,
- 35:01Speaker 4: the ceremonial first call to Tim Walls. He didn't answer
- 35:05Speaker 4: the phone because it showed up no caller ID. That's
- 35:09Speaker 4: a true story, and so she had to have her
- 35:12Speaker 4: people to call him to say, Kamala Harris is going
- 35:15Speaker 4: to be calling you. But it showed up literally on
- 35:18Speaker 4: his phone, no caller ID. So he didn't answer what,
- 35:22Speaker 4: in his case, would be the biggest call of his life.
- 35:24Speaker 4: So it's good to know spam calls, I guess, can
- 35:27Speaker 4: happen to the best of us, or at least perceived
- 35:29Speaker 4: spam calls. Rob Cunningham is here. He is the president
- 35:33Speaker 4: of the Putnam County Board of Education. Good morning, sir, how.
- 35:35Speaker 8: Are you morning, Dave?
- 35:36Speaker 3: Thank you, thank you for being here.
- 35:37Speaker 4: Now, when voters in November in Putnam County, we'll go
- 35:41Speaker 4: to the polls. Not only are they going to be
- 35:42Speaker 4: looking at candidates, of course, but.
- 35:44Speaker 3: They're also going to be asked to weigh in on
- 35:46Speaker 3: some educational issues. So that's Monday night.
- 35:50Speaker 4: The Putnam County Board of Education approved the bond and
- 35:53Speaker 4: if I get anything wrong, correct me. The bond to
- 35:55Speaker 4: be on the ballot in November. State school building authorities
- 35:58Speaker 4: signed off on the financial land last week. So explain
- 36:02Speaker 4: what is this for?
- 36:03Speaker 3: Why is it needed? You take it from here.
- 36:04Speaker 22: Well, the biggest issue we have is Hurricane Middle School
- 36:09Speaker 22: seventy seventy.
- 36:10Speaker 8: Five years old.
- 36:11Speaker 22: We've outgrown the footprint there with our student population, and
- 36:16Speaker 22: with all the economic development and that we're having in
- 36:20Speaker 22: Putnam County and around Putnam County, we're anticipating that our
- 36:24Speaker 22: student population.
- 36:25Speaker 8: Is want to continue to grow.
- 36:26Speaker 22: And fifteen years ago, when we passed a bond, Hurricane
- 36:31Speaker 22: Middle School wasn't even touched in that bond. We built
- 36:34Speaker 22: Buffalo High School, we built Pokam Middle School, we built
- 36:38Speaker 22: Winfield Middle School, but Hurricane Middle School didn't get any
- 36:42Speaker 22: money from that.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Well, how old is the school? Middle School?
- 36:47Speaker 8: It's seventy seventy five years old.
- 36:49Speaker 3: Oh okay, okay, yeah, So I.
- 36:51Speaker 8: Mean we've got our money's worth out of it.
- 36:52Speaker 3: I think.
- 36:53Speaker 4: So, I think I'd like to ask that that I was.
- 36:55Speaker 4: I thought it had some years on it, but I
- 36:57Speaker 4: didn't think it was that old. So I mean, it's
- 37:00Speaker 4: it's probably time.
- 37:01Speaker 22: I believe the plaque in the gym says nineteen fifty,
- 37:04Speaker 22: nineteen fifty one some more.
- 37:05Speaker 4: Okay, So the big question, so this will be on
- 37:09Speaker 4: the ballot. I mean it's done.
- 37:10Speaker 22: Deal, Yes, So that's what the Board of Education voted
- 37:14Speaker 22: to place it on the ballot for the voters in
- 37:15Speaker 22: Putnam County to review and hopefully they will approve it.
- 37:19Speaker 4: And you mentioned again it's Hurricane Middle School, but there's
- 37:21Speaker 4: also these other facilities as well that are also going
- 37:23Speaker 4: to benefit if this passes.
- 37:25Speaker 16: Oh.
- 37:25Speaker 22: Absolutely, we're touching. We're going to touch all corners of
- 37:28Speaker 22: Putnam County. We're asking to replace the light systems and
- 37:34Speaker 22: a lot of the athletic fields. If you've been to
- 37:37Speaker 22: a middle school football game at PoCA you.
- 37:39Speaker 8: Understand, And once the sun goes down, it's pretty dark.
- 37:42Speaker 4: Yeah, play faster voice, yes sir, so go ahead, yeah so.
- 37:46Speaker 22: And not only the lighting system, but we're also going
- 37:49Speaker 22: to replace some press boxes and some of the bleacher infrastructure.
- 37:53Speaker 4: So the big question anytime that this is put before
- 37:57Speaker 4: the voters, and the questions of people like me get
- 38:00Speaker 4: is and to you and those that are going to
- 38:02Speaker 4: try to support it, will this result in more taxes the.
- 38:06Speaker 22: Tax base the tax number will actually go down. And
- 38:10Speaker 22: let me explain that is the proposed bond that we
- 38:14Speaker 22: just approved is approximately fifty million dollars and the existing
- 38:20Speaker 22: bond that we refinanced and have was able to save
- 38:25Speaker 22: three point five million dollars one and are retiring now
- 38:28Speaker 22: is approximately a sixty million dollar bond. So the tax
- 38:32Speaker 22: burd will actually decrease for each homeowner.
- 38:35Speaker 4: Okay, And this something you don't hear very often.
- 38:37Speaker 22: I mean, well, our board, one of the first ground
- 38:41Speaker 22: rules we laid when we were discussing this was we
- 38:44Speaker 22: are not going to raise taxes at Putnam County.
- 38:46Speaker 3: Okay, So that's always good to hear.
- 38:48Speaker 4: But Dave Island showing five any lie presented in part
- 38:51Speaker 4: by General Hardware of Windfield and built in general number
- 38:53Speaker 4: of Windfield for all projects. Pick at small shop locally
- 38:56Speaker 4: vis A General Hardware WV dot com. I want to
- 38:59Speaker 4: kind of switch gears to just for a moment.
- 39:00Speaker 3: I got you here.
- 39:01Speaker 4: I want to talk about Putnam County in general for
- 39:03Speaker 4: a moment. I may be a little biased. Hurricane is
- 39:06Speaker 4: not my hometown, but it's where I.
- 39:08Speaker 3: Have lived for ten years.
- 39:11Speaker 4: And listeners have heard me say this before, not just
- 39:14Speaker 4: Hurricane where I live, but I mean all of Putnam
- 39:16Speaker 4: County is a great place to be, great schools, business environment,
- 39:22Speaker 4: low crime rate. You kind of mentioned this. People are
- 39:26Speaker 4: moving in again in droves. Some of that because of
- 39:29Speaker 4: New Core. A lot of that's because of New Core.
- 39:32Speaker 4: There's new housing developments that are coming up. But there's
- 39:34Speaker 4: a lot of people, and I've heard this from people
- 39:38Speaker 4: in the education field that have told me, and this
- 39:40Speaker 4: is your field of expertise, one of your field of
- 39:43Speaker 4: expertises is that a lot of parents are choosing to
- 39:47Speaker 4: bring their kids to Putnam County to raise their kids
- 39:50Speaker 4: there for And I'm not trying to, you know, cast
- 39:53Speaker 4: shade on any of the other areas, but I'm just
- 39:55Speaker 4: saying there's a lot of people that are choosing to
- 39:57Speaker 4: raise their families in Puttnam count talk about that.
- 40:00Speaker 22: Yes, And in my prior career when people would move in,
- 40:06Speaker 22: you know, I had a lot of coworkers would move in,
- 40:09Speaker 22: move out, and any of them had children. They all
- 40:12Speaker 22: landed in Putnam County, and there was two reasons. Number
- 40:15Speaker 22: one was the school system for their children, and number
- 40:18Speaker 22: two was the housing. The quality of the housing. You
- 40:21Speaker 22: can get more bang for the buck. You get a
- 40:24Speaker 22: really nice house and a nice neighborhood for a reasonable price.
- 40:27Speaker 4: Now the problem is a Putnam County, and this is
- 40:29Speaker 4: another problem we have in other areas too, is there's
- 40:32Speaker 4: just not enough housing right now for the people that
- 40:33Speaker 4: are wanting to come in. There's a housing shortage.
- 40:36Speaker 22: That is correct. I have a friend of mine that
- 40:38Speaker 22: actually got into a bidding war with a new Core
- 40:41Speaker 22: employee and the new Core employee one my friend stopped
- 40:45Speaker 22: at ten thousand dollars over asking.
- 40:47Speaker 4: I mean, that's really interesting to me because I can
- 40:50Speaker 4: recall in purchasing houses in the past, you know that
- 40:53Speaker 4: I don't think that I ever had to pay more
- 40:56Speaker 4: than the asking price. We bought the house where now
- 40:59Speaker 4: we bought it in twenty eighteen, and we didn't We
- 41:02Speaker 4: didn't pay more than the asking price.
- 41:03Speaker 3: You know, you always try to get loader.
- 41:04Speaker 4: But now people are coming in in Putnham County and
- 41:07Speaker 4: some other areas too, look at it and saying, Okay,
- 41:09Speaker 4: this house is two hundred and twenty five thousand, I'll
- 41:11Speaker 4: give you two fifty for it, because that's how much
- 41:13Speaker 4: they want to be there and how much they want
- 41:15Speaker 4: the house.
- 41:15Speaker 22: Yes, and you know, I've chosen to raise my I'm
- 41:18Speaker 22: from Putnam County, but I've chosen to raise my family
- 41:20Speaker 22: there for just the reasons you explained, the values that
- 41:24Speaker 22: are in the community. You know, Putnam County is still
- 41:27Speaker 22: unique that it has four unique communities Buffalo, Puttnam of Buffalo, PoCA, Winfield,
- 41:33Speaker 22: and Hurricane. But it's all, you know, they all share
- 41:36Speaker 22: the same values. They all have the same same wants
- 41:40Speaker 22: and needs. And you know, the school system, at least
- 41:43Speaker 22: while I've been there, I think reflects.
- 41:45Speaker 4: That talk a little bit before we let you go
- 41:48Speaker 4: about the school system and overall, how the test scorer
- 41:50Speaker 4: is looking at Putnham County. I don't need specific numbers,
- 41:52Speaker 4: but I mean test scores looking.
- 41:54Speaker 3: Good and everything so we have.
- 41:57Speaker 22: Last year, I believe we led in just about every
- 41:59Speaker 22: cagory and if we wasn't first, we were second, and
- 42:03Speaker 22: that is great. I'm really happy with that. I want
- 42:06Speaker 22: to be the top ranking school system in the state.
- 42:10Speaker 22: But you've got to realize we are competing regionally and
- 42:14Speaker 22: nationally and globally. So these are we want our students
- 42:18Speaker 22: to have test scores that compete regionally, nationally, and globally.
- 42:22Speaker 22: So you know, we're not satisfied with just being the
- 42:25Speaker 22: number one school system in the state of West Virginia.
- 42:28Speaker 22: We want to continue to raise our education level.
- 42:32Speaker 4: All right, let's get back to the levee again. It's
- 42:34Speaker 4: going to be on the ballot in November, right for
- 42:36Speaker 4: Putnam County voters.
- 42:37Speaker 8: Yes, sir, the.
- 42:38Speaker 22: Putnam County voters will have an opportunity to evaluate it
- 42:41Speaker 22: and see if it's worth worth their money.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Now, as a school board member and this president school board,
- 42:47Speaker 4: are you allowed to advocate for it? Because I know
- 42:49Speaker 4: sometimes that you can't necessarily do that. I mean in certainly,
- 42:53Speaker 4: for example, like in some of the emergency services levy,
- 42:57Speaker 4: some of the workers weren't allowed to advocate for it.
- 42:59Speaker 4: They were just allowed to explain it is that something
- 43:01Speaker 4: you're wrong. I don't want to get you fired. You're
- 43:03Speaker 4: not allowed to do it.
- 43:04Speaker 22: Don't do it, Rob, No, I believe that I'm allowed
- 43:07Speaker 22: to explain it. And you know I wouldn't be talking
- 43:11Speaker 22: positive positively about it if I wasn't wasn't supporting it.
- 43:16Speaker 4: All right, I got to ask you about Marshall football.
- 43:20Speaker 22: My son's down there playing. He goes in at six
- 43:22Speaker 22: thirty in the morning and he calls me about nine thirty,
- 43:25Speaker 22: ten o'clock at night when he's coming home.
- 43:27Speaker 8: He's they're working. They're really working hard.
- 43:30Speaker 3: We're gonna be good this year.
- 43:31Speaker 22: Right, I have every everything I understand.
- 43:34Speaker 8: We should be pretty competitive.
- 43:35Speaker 3: I did. Is the sun as good as the old
- 43:37Speaker 3: man was?
- 43:38Speaker 8: You have to ask him.
- 43:40Speaker 3: He's gonna say, yes, I'm all the better than he is.
- 43:43Speaker 3: And now, what positions your son played? What's his name?
- 43:45Speaker 8: He's playing defensive end.
- 43:46Speaker 4: It's Jackson Cunningham and product of the school system there.
- 43:49Speaker 22: He graduated from Winfield High School, played football at Winfield
- 43:52Speaker 22: High School and he was given an opportunity to go
- 43:56Speaker 22: to Marshall. Coach Hugh invited him to come and walkner.
- 44:00Speaker 22: He's he's earning his bones.

- 47:24Speaker 3: It's just that simple. It's it's supply and demand, Texas.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Dave.
- 47:32Speaker 4: A lot of the rich moved to Putnam County. That's
- 47:34Speaker 4: why you see a lot of state tax dollars going there.
- 47:37Speaker 4: Just saying fact checked, it's a text. Well, I moved there,
- 47:41Speaker 4: and I'm certainly not rich. But I'll tell you one
- 47:45Speaker 4: of the reasons why when I when I left southern
- 47:47Speaker 4: West Virginia and moved to Putnham County, one of the
- 47:49Speaker 4: reasons why my wife and I chose to settle in
- 47:50Speaker 4: Putnam County was because We're both Marshall.
- 47:54Speaker 3: People and we went to Marshall.
- 47:56Speaker 4: And I like being between Huntington and Charleston.
- 48:00Speaker 3: I do.
- 48:00Speaker 4: It's nothing against Charleston. I'm in Charleston at least six,
- 48:04Speaker 4: if not seven days a week. But we chose to
- 48:08Speaker 4: live there and there were a variety. We don't have kids,
- 48:11Speaker 4: so that wasn't an issue. But you still want, whether
- 48:13Speaker 4: you have kids or not, you still want these schools
- 48:15Speaker 4: around you to do well because that means good things.
- 48:18Speaker 4: And as I said, it's more and more people are

- 49:29Speaker 4: Getting back to the latest gim Justice News and again
- 49:33Speaker 4: Brad with the lead story this morning wv Metronews dot com.
- 49:36Speaker 4: Twenty three coal companies are now being found in contempt.
- 49:40Speaker 4: These companies are part of the Justice family empire, being
- 49:44Speaker 4: held in contempt for not paying safety fines of nearly
- 49:47Speaker 4: a half million dollars. Now, these cases actually go back
- 49:53Speaker 4: to twenty fourteen. And as I said, Brad and Hopey
- 49:56Speaker 4: will discuss it. I think it's in the eleven o'clock
- 49:58Speaker 4: hour and talk line today. The question you have to ask,
- 50:01Speaker 4: is will this be enough to keep Jim Justice out
- 50:08Speaker 4: of the US Senate replacing Senator Joe Manchin, who opted
- 50:12Speaker 4: not to seek reelection. I think you and I both
- 50:14Speaker 4: know the answer to that question is no. Jim Justice.
- 50:21Speaker 3: Governor.
- 50:22Speaker 4: Jim Justice is going to win in November, and he's
- 50:27Speaker 4: going to go to Washington. And at this point, I
- 50:31Speaker 4: am just wondering how much the national media is going
- 50:38Speaker 4: to focus on the Jim Justice financial issues.
- 50:42Speaker 8: Now.
- 50:43Speaker 4: We've already seen some reports have come out national publications,
- 50:46Speaker 4: various ones have come out talking about the Jim Justice situation.
- 50:50Speaker 4: But we're in August right now, and I don't know
- 50:55Speaker 4: that there's going to be from the national folks. I
- 50:57Speaker 4: don't know that there's going to be a whole lot
- 50:59Speaker 4: of focus on the West Virginia race, to be honest
- 51:01Speaker 4: with you, mainly, and this is and I mean this
- 51:04Speaker 4: with with no disrespect intended at all to Wheeley Mayor
- 51:09Speaker 4: Glen Elliott, who is going to be the Jim Justice
- 51:11Speaker 4: opponent in the Senate race. No no disrespect meant at
- 51:16Speaker 4: all toward toward Mayor Elliott. Seems like I've had him
- 51:22Speaker 4: on the show, seems like a fine gentleman. Uh, well respected, but.
- 51:27Speaker 3: He's got a D after his name. So that's just
- 51:29Speaker 3: and that's just kind of where we are right now.
- 51:31Speaker 4: So if the national media chooses to put the Justice
- 51:38Speaker 4: finances under the microscope again, they can focus all they want,
- 51:42Speaker 4: but it's the voters of West Virginia who are going
- 51:46Speaker 4: to be the ones to put him in Washington, not
- 51:48Speaker 4: anyone outside the state.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Now.
- 51:50Speaker 4: I'm will there be pack money coming in targeting Jim
- 51:52Speaker 4: Justice to a certain extent, I don't.
- 51:54Speaker 3: I don't know that it'll be a lot. We hope
- 51:56Speaker 3: it is. In our industry. We hope it is, but
- 52:00Speaker 3: it may or may not be. My clothes on this
- 52:03Speaker 3: is it's not going to make a bit of difference.
- 52:05Speaker 4: Though Jim Justice wins, I also say he won't complete
- 52:10Speaker 4: the full.
- 52:10Speaker 3: Term for one reason or another.
- 52:13Speaker 4: And the next governor of the state of West Virginia,
- 52:16Speaker 4: Patrick Morrissey, who I think is going to beat Steve
- 52:17Speaker 4: Williams in November. Morrissey then appoints himself to Justice's seat
- 52:21Speaker 4: in the Senate. Morrissey gets to where he wanted to
- 52:24Speaker 4: be in the first place, in DC and not in
- 52:27Speaker 4: West Virginia. That's way it all phases out the way
- 52:29Speaker 4: I look at it, but I've been wrong plenty of
- 52:31Speaker 4: times before. Dave Island Show brought to you a part
