• RYAN RAYLE (00:00.014) You know what? Okay. Hey, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the ATX Metal podcast. We are about an hour late. had, broke a I'm gonna start it off like this. I broke a mirror last night, a very large mirror, probably a good three by two. I mean, it was a solid mirror. We'll get more into that, but I think that's where I'm gonna put my conspiracy theory hat on and say, that's kind of why we're having the technical difficulties today. We got released the captive, but Release The Captive (00:00.693) Yes, sir. Release The Captive (00:07.127) You RYAN RAYLE (00:29.346) What we're going to do right now is we're trying to make, we're trying to make this the most pleasing podcast, audio, visual, conversation, but you're going to join us on this journey because instead of us figuring out all the tough shit and then just presenting you this beautiful presentation, you're going to go for a journey with us. So right now, what I would like you guys to do is what we just practiced. Go around the room, introduce yourself. who you are and what you do in the band, and then we'll tell the story that we're getting ready to tell. Release The Captive (01:04.983) Excellent. Yeah, absolutely. So yeah, so my name is Adam Delgado. I am the guitarist lead guitarist of the band only guitarist actually with the exception of the bass and So what was the last question you wanted me to answer? Okay RYAN RAYLE (01:08.974) Yeah, remember your microphone. RYAN RAYLE (01:22.763) that's good. We'll just keep moment. But it's who you are and what you do in the band. Release The Captive (01:31.095) Hey everyone, name is Trey Ledesma and I sing for the band and also scream. RYAN RAYLE (01:35.214) All right, I'll pass that mic back. Release The Captive (01:38.207) Hey what up my name is Danny from Mexico, Celaya Guanajuato and I'm the drummer for Release the Cap to Baby. RYAN RAYLE (01:46.382) All right, Daniel Memmer, you gotta look at your camera. Bingo. Last but not least. Release The Captive (01:48.311) camera. That one. I'm Carlos Delgado. I play the bass and I do backup screams for the band. RYAN RAYLE (01:58.284) Awesome. Well, ladies and gentlemen, that is Release the Captive. No, the interview's not over. But now what's getting ready to happen is we're going to add two more microphones to their setup. what I would like to do, I would assume, Adam, that you're the one that's going to be getting the XLRs and everything. All right. So let's just do this. Trey, you give everybody a little brief bio. on release the captive while he goes and searches for this and for everybody listening and watching at home what's happening right now is we're having a little bit of trouble trying to get the the rhythm section back there hooked up which I personally think you can't have a band without the rhythm section you know I'm saying we need percussion we need we need the you know the snare bombs and the fat strings so we need to get them in on this program as well because here at the podcast we like to involve everybody Release The Captive (02:45.076) hahaha Release The Captive (02:49.911) You RYAN RAYLE (02:52.864) So, Adam's gonna go find two more microphones and two more cables. And while he's doing that, we're gonna continue the interview because we wanna get you guys in and out. I know it's Sunday. We just had a really bad storm here in Central Texas. It was kinda shitty. And now the weather is beautiful and it's, know, we don't wanna be in here doing this interview. We wanna be outside enjoying some sunshine and. Release The Captive (03:08.243) That we did, yeah, that we did. RYAN RAYLE (03:19.308) you know, everything that Central Texas has to offer after some really terrible fucking storm. So Trey, while the chaos ensues, mind you, everybody, they just moved into this new space, so that's why it looks like a practice space. Trey, if you could. This is going to this is going to be great. This is just good. This is great. Tell us, tell us, tell us what release the captives all about. Release The Captive (03:33.409) Yeah You Release The Captive (03:43.415) It's going be awesome. Release The Captive (03:48.375) Yeah, so the band originally started in 2019, played a few shows and then COVID happened. Some member lineup changes, I found them through Craigslist, funny enough. I don't if you remember that. Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (04:02.549) Shut up. for reference, I'm 42. I was around when Craigslist was invented. you know, back when Tom from MySpace and, you know, everything was kind of cool. But anyway, so yeah, dude, Craigslist, Craigslist, it's still there for everyone curious. It's out there, it's in the ether. And if you want to find Band-Mabe, you know, you can still go there, but you might find a serial killer now. Release The Captive (04:17.054) Everyone's homie. Release The Captive (04:22.103) Yeah. Release The Captive (04:30.423) Yeah, I mean the better option now is going through Facebook and doing Like Austin musicians wanted which is where we found Danny over here Yeah RYAN RAYLE (04:31.371) But anyway, go ahead, Trey, sorry. RYAN RAYLE (04:42.397) really? I've been on that. I'm kind of in that group, like just in the background kind of seeing what's going on because everybody, not everybody, every now and again I get hit up, hey do know any drummers or vocalists or you know stuff like that. So Austin Music Connection. Release The Captive (04:58.055) It's either Austin Music Connection or Austin Musicians Wanted. One of the two, think I'm like, as we were like searching for a new drummer, that's where like we end up finding Danny. But yeah, ever since then, we've been playing shows, writing music, writing new music currently. And yeah, like as you can see, we just moved into a new house. This is actually just me and Adam's house. RYAN RAYLE (05:01.302) Okay. RYAN RAYLE (05:07.787) Okay. RYAN RAYLE (05:21.623) Okay. Release The Captive (05:22.679) And yeah, soon enough, like we'll start getting settled in, start practicing more and start just writing some new tunes. RYAN RAYLE (05:28.927) Okay, looks like we have one microphone that's ready to go. Okay, let's give it a shot. Release The Captive (05:32.575) I did. got it backwards. Danny, you want to it? RYAN RAYLE (05:37.973) No, echo, can room volume and we can cut all this out so if we got to do some more stuff it's fine. Release The Captive (05:48.999) Yeah RYAN RAYLE (05:53.965) It still just sounds like a room mic. you know what? Let me get rid of this. Release The Captive (05:58.635) It's on. Daniel Trevino (06:00.762) One, two, three, four, five. RYAN RAYLE (06:02.806) that's coming through his ear microphone. RYAN RAYLE (06:15.309) I'll be honest, this is a first. Release The Captive (06:16.503) it's got audio on let me see I'll this try now Danny RYAN RAYLE (06:27.177) No, no still still sounds like just room Release The Captive (06:29.547) Yeah, okay, okay, okay, give me a second. RYAN RAYLE (06:40.835) I if there's... Release The Captive (06:41.015) I think we had this issue before when I was trying to get multiple mics and I could only get two. I think that's all what this platform allows us to. Because I have, this is a, you see it's a Scarlett 18, so I got 18 outputs, so. RYAN RAYLE (06:46.935) to, okay. RYAN RAYLE (06:51.424) No worries. RYAN RAYLE (06:55.403) Yep. Yeah, that's why I, yeah, because most times people will chime in with like like a I2 and it's just two outputs. So it's like, it's all we can fit, but you know, okay. So that makes kind of more sense. So. Release The Captive (07:06.645) Yeah. Let's keep it simple. It's in there. It's in the trust me the mic is on. I can hear him through our back or playback. I just not coming through this audio. I think this thing only allows up to two. Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (07:17.075) up to two per video channel. Okay. Well, at least that gives me something I can run to the engineers with and be like, hey, not sure if this is something you guys thought about, but this is a real world scenario. Yeah, no, mean, see, we're learning, we're helping because now we're going to forward all of this information to our lovely, lovely platform host here, Riverside.fm. No, I'm not sponsored by them. Release The Captive (07:28.855) absolutely yeah, yeah, these are the kind of things that they live for them in you know RYAN RAYLE (07:45.365) I pay them money for stuff like this. let's do this. Whenever the rhythm section has to chime in, Adam, you just. Release The Captive (07:56.727) You know what you know what would make it easier is if so Trace got a stand I can get pass him this mic and train I can use this one back in the front Is our video feed from the phone is that blurry or is that okay, I don't know why it's RYAN RAYLE (08:05.409) See, sharing is caring, Sharing is caring. RYAN RAYLE (08:13.611) Yes, so I forgot to mention that that what you're seeing right now is degraded simply because it's constantly recording a little bit and then it's uploading at the same time. So it'll look clear and crystal clear on the back end. So what you're seeing right now is just buffering. So you yeah, you look like a pixel. You look like a pixelated piece of trash. But on my end. So. Release The Captive (08:27.361) Copy. Thank you. Release The Captive (08:34.257) Man, I know, I'm just like... RYAN RAYLE (08:42.017) Just anyway, just Mike etiquette. Carlos, you might just hold it a little bit closer. You seem to want to do like the fucking bingo. Or it might be back. Oh, it's a condenser, Hey, there it is. Yeah, next time just get a white, like a paint marker and just put the letter F on it so it's front, right? Front. Bingo, perfect. Oh. Release The Captive (08:47.445) you can see it backwards? It's right there, you see where the circle is? Ohhhh, okay, okay, okay, gotcha. Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha, okay, okay, okay, okay. Restyling. Release The Captive (09:03.297) front copy it does have a circle we're just dumb sorry we're like dumb RYAN RAYLE (09:12.333) man. All right. See guys, this is this is why we do it. We're having fun. We're having fun. All right. All right. Now that we've got literally all of it figured out for everybody watching and listening, thank you for sticking around. This was 10 minutes of nothing but sheer fun and enjoyment for all of us enjoyed, all of us involved. So release the captive. Austin, Texas. We're going on. Release The Captive (09:18.387) Definitely. RYAN RAYLE (09:39.251) six years, seven years of being a thing. Is this the original lineup? Okay. Release The Captive (09:43.959) No, so I'm the second vocalist and Danny is the also the second drummer that the band has had RYAN RAYLE (09:50.221) Okay. Okay, so let's just go with who can speak about the OG origins. Release The Captive (09:56.727) Yeah, I think that's more you. That would be me. Yeah, so the old origins, man, this is a crazy story that I like to tell people because I never thought this would happen in my life, to be honest. I've been playing music for about 20 years of my life. I enjoy it. I absolutely live for this, but I also work for a living. Right. So. RYAN RAYLE (10:00.414) All right. Release The Captive (10:22.455) A few about yeah, but just before COVID, know around 2017 2018 I moved into a fancy a little apartment down Burnett called the mark and it had a bar downstairs called the poor house pub. Incredible bar credible people really good employees really great patrons and I met Mikey our original drummer he was a bartender there at the time and You know he one day he just found out you know Hey, I heard you know through the grapevine that you play guitar and you're pretty good at it So he's like so do know any drummers in the in Austin? said, know, I just moved here a couple years ago and I didn't know anybody He's like well, I guess we're in a band. That's the story. I like to say no, no, but yeah, he asked me Hey, you you want to jam and you know just hang out for a little bit and we did and We enjoyed what we did. So he was like, let's start a project. And, we, we didn't even have the name at the time. It was just all jamming. And even then we didn't even know kind of what direction he wanted originally. And if you go back and listen to our much older material, we started out more as like a post hardcore band. we did, we were into a lot of stuff like Alexa on fire thrice, all those old school two thousands bands, you know, and, and then from that point on, we just kind of took off. we did have a second. guitarist. normally don't really play with too many other rhythm or rhythm guitarists I guess you would say but I enjoyed the company I had and it was you know it's been years since I had been in a band that performed or in doing anything kind of musically in general I just kind of was a bedroom shredder at the point at the point so Release The Captive (11:57.463) We just started writing music and it's all for fun. And lately, this past few years, we've definitely taken the project into where we want it to be a more serious outfit and really support some of these newer acts that are coming out and then also just be part of the music community here in Texas. And it's incredible. Everything we've been seeing these past few years, ever since COVID, I've just seen a huge, what do you call it? Like a... It's just it's just booming right now. I can see that it's very competitive but not in a way where everyone's competing with each other. I think everyone's competing more more or less to just perform or maybe it's hard to get booking right because everyone wants to play but. But yeah, back to where the origins of the band was is that's pretty much more or less how we started. It was a fun project at first and it was just for fun. And then it turned into a serious thing where we really wanted to pursue more hardcore and heavier music. And it eventually evolved into the new lineup that we have today. And we all had similar mindsets, if you will, that, this is this is the direction we wanted to head into. And it's been a lot of fun ever since. But we definitely would like to keep the professionalism of the music company. at us because you know we don't want to be another cookie cutter kind of thing it's just more like it is fun and it's we're having a great time I definitely want that to be the point of us performing but at the same time I want us to also be taken seriously so but yeah that's it's been a fun ride so far and I want to hopefully continue to keep doing it RYAN RAYLE (13:28.203) Yeah, man, it's it's whenever whenever you have a band and then something like COVID hits, I mean, no one no one can prepare for that, right? That's ridiculous to even think of. Yeah, I mean, there are entities out there that that's their whole fucking job. I mean, there's there's people that travel the world and go take samples from bats about what new virus is about to pop off. And so, I mean, not that that's in the, you know. Release The Captive (13:49.153) You RYAN RAYLE (13:54.955) I don't wake up every morning like what fucking new bat is gonna kill me today but you know. Release The Captive (14:00.342) I do. Well, you know in all seriousness know that that's that the covert thing actually changed the whole dynamic of both the live music scene and music in general and and how it all comes out right because it's everything now It's all about the numbers and in streaming. It's all about the digital platform. It's all about having an image You know, if you don't have a digital image You're gonna basically go nowhere. So that became like the focal point right because nobody could go out and And also on top of that that was the main factor in our lineup change was coke RYAN RAYLE (14:10.029) 1000%. RYAN RAYLE (14:22.134) Mm-hmm. Release The Captive (14:31.161) And that's such a crazy thing. You know, we found Martin or Trey or like you said, you reached out to Craigslist, which was such a wild thing at the time. I can't believe we even did it. We didn't have no idea what we were walking into. RYAN RAYLE (14:31.903) Okay. RYAN RAYLE (14:44.017) Dude, Craigslist is a... You can find some really cool shit in there in terms of like, I didn't know this was a thing. And then there's also things in the... mean... Just... If you're bored one day, I'm not even gonna go down that rabbit hole, but just go on Craigslist and just look at all the shit that's on there. It is... Release The Captive (14:49.719) you Release The Captive (15:03.479) So much. It's insane, RYAN RAYLE (15:08.511) It is a forgotten about platform. I mean, it's just, there's a lot of fucking creepers on there looking for models for their shoots. And they're paying like hundreds and thousands of dollars. you know, me being me, I'm like, fuck it, apply. And like, if they're looking for a middle-aged white dude with... Release The Captive (15:18.921) Yeah. Release The Captive (15:28.203) Hahaha RYAN RAYLE (15:33.261) You know, normal day problems and they're looking to, you know, put me in an ad about, I don't know, cotton dockers or something. I'll do it. But anyway, so yeah, Craig, I'm happy that you guys have a Craigslist story and the fact that Release The Captive (15:47.955) It worked out. You know, the craziest thing is when we did it, we asked him, hey, just so we make sure you're the real deal, like send us a YouTube video and post it on YouTube. And and yeah, sure enough, traded and he did a great job. I believe his his introduction to us was with Anthropoid. That's what he auditioned with, which was the original single that we first came out with as a band. And he nailed it. Just didn't not just nailed it. He excelled it. And we were like already. So we actually had a few people audition and we were like, let's just go ahead and let them audition. But we already had to really pick trade. RYAN RAYLE (15:54.625) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (16:04.3) Yeah. Release The Captive (16:17.809) At the end the day it was just like let's give everyone a fair shot because I think you know That's the right thing to do but we already knew he had it and once we got him in you know in the studio it was like it just it all went down and it just clicked there was like nothing there who's He was on pitch and key everything. What's up, Carlos? yeah. No, I was just gonna add to that was that Yeah, doing it through you to go closer. Okay. Cool on the money shot. Okay. yeah, no doing it through RYAN RAYLE (16:18.241) Okay. RYAN RAYLE (16:33.069) Carlos? RYAN RAYLE (16:40.194) closer. RYAN RAYLE (16:43.714) Bingo. Release The Captive (16:47.609) YouTube made like a lot of sense just because you know we can see get a feel for them and hear them I feel like some people just sent us audio files but we also kind of wanted to see if it was like the image that matched you know and that was a big deal for us too so you know it was really good to like you know see him beforehand and everything and also hear him RYAN RAYLE (17:06.859) No, think, yeah, I mean, obviously you, you, it's almost, it's almost like that. The thing, this kind of all ties together. So if you go on Craigslist, there's this place called, there's the, or that used to be there, it's called Mist Connections. And let's just say you were, let's, okay, for those that are old enough, we'll pull it back even further. And so in what's called a newspaper where people, you know, Release The Captive (17:23.415) I heard that. I remember it. Release The Captive (17:35.639) You RYAN RAYLE (17:36.599) do journalism and they put it on a piece of paper and then someone delivers it to your house and then you pick it up and you read it. It's social media before the internet, right? Like, so, look at this, grandma passed away up in Oakland or whatever. But there was a section in the ad where it was like a Miss Connections section and you could put an ad in the paper and you can do that on Craigslist as well and you describe the story. I was at, well, for example, we'll just use come and take it live. So it's like, I was out at Come and Take It Live and you were at the bar wearing this, you were with these people, we bumped into each other, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And you can literally just tell this story. And if anybody sees it and they know that person or it's kind of like on on Twitter, like a Twitter do do the work and they'll go out and like, who is this person? But in this scenario, this is hypothetical. But I'm thinking of you linking up with somebody on Craigslist as a Miss Connection. Release The Captive (18:30.529) You RYAN RAYLE (18:33.121) But actually you're like, you're looking for a vocalist and it's like, okay, we're going to need like a proof of life here. Please submit a YouTube video so that we can make sure that, you know, you fit the vibe too. Yeah. And that you're real, right? You know, some AI generated something. But I mean, you know, that kind of that it's like, you guys are playing it safe, right? Like, you know, show me the goods before we make the purchase essentially. So Trey, how did you feel about showing your goods? Release The Captive (18:39.423) Yeah. Release The Captive (18:43.275) You're real. He's human. RYAN RAYLE (19:03.147) Hahaha! Release The Captive (19:04.895) I know it was fun man like I was already recording on my own for a little bit just doing vocal covers and Funny enough. I also auditioned with the Northland cover and a slipknot cover. I think I sent them both and Yeah, but I'd never RYAN RAYLE (19:16.94) Okay. Is that more, was that to like just show your diversity or just those are favorites? Release The Captive (19:22.953) Yeah, yeah, like I already was working on those covers and just to be like, hey, here's what I sound like. And then I had to figure out how to work a camera at that point. So was like, OK, here's what I look like as well. So whenever I was doing an anthropoid. RYAN RAYLE (19:36.918) Hahaha. Release The Captive (19:41.463) Of course I wanted to make sure I did the song justice, but I wanted to do my own thing with it. So I think during the last part of it, I just kind of like changed up some of the melody just to have fun with it and just like added my own like spin on it. You know, just to like make sure I gave them like, yeah, here's what you wanted to hear, but here's also what else I can do. So just to add in some more things. Can you still find those videos on YouTube? Yeah. So if you want to see his audition, it's on there. RYAN RAYLE (20:12.652) so it's not an unlisted thing, right? Release The Captive (20:16.917) No, no, it's yeah, I think it's like open to the public. You just got to look up like Martin L. Anthropoid. Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (20:18.668) Good. That's definitely going in the show notes. I'm going to find it. I'm going to link it. I'm just going to put click here. So, wow. OK. So we got a Craigslist kind of vibe going on, which I approved. kind of want to get, you know, like they have those little patches you can wear or you can buy. It's like YouTube University. Release The Captive (20:32.017) Laughter Release The Captive (20:39.627) You Release The Captive (20:48.195) yeah. With a battle vest. RYAN RAYLE (20:48.94) It's, yeah. I want to call it like Craigslist certified, right? Yeah, exactly. want everybody to know that, you know, I'm Craigslist certified. It's almost like getting meta verified or verified on meta just to make sure that like, yeah, I'm a real person. Like I'm Craigslist certified. Come on. All right. See you, Stree. Release The Captive (21:05.277) This guy is. Release The Captive (21:13.911) Right. Street cred. Street cred. RYAN RAYLE (21:19.02) In 10 years people are like what the fuck is Craigslist certified like shit you didn't know about that damn Yeah, there was this there was this whole thing, you know, but Yeah, you just had to be there. It's it's like man time a time and space or a space in time So, let's let's get to the music for people that aren't familiar I know that Trey you just listed off a handful of bands that you know for your for your your audition Release The Captive (21:25.672) Hey, dude, you just had to be there. Just had to be there, RYAN RAYLE (21:47.981) Which was which does show a good a good range for those that don't know release the captive now and You know what you guys are looking to produce forward. What would what what would somebody expect whenever they they plug your shit in and hit play? Release The Captive (22:04.259) so the newest kind of material we're working on is more, new metal. They're like, there's like a new metal revival right now. not saying that we're trying to capitalize on it, but we definitely want to like showcase like our own, uniqueness towards it. Like we definitely have, like our own, like up and comings with new metal. I know these guys love like Limp Bizkit and corn and whatnot. RYAN RAYLE (22:12.8) There is, it's all cyclical. RYAN RAYLE (22:31.862) There's there is there's nothing wrong with that. Okay, there's nothing wrong with it Release The Captive (22:34.071) Oh no, not at all. They put me onto it a little bit. So I'm like more like into it now. Um, but, uh, I grew up in, uh, you know, the Southwest side of San Antonio and that's like the hood. And for myself, it's always been like Paul Wall, uh, little Wayne, um, uh, TIP like stuff, like this and stuff like that influenced like myself. So I want to like be more. RYAN RAYLE (22:37.824) Good. Good. RYAN RAYLE (22:58.732) Those are all hip hop. Release The Captive (23:00.479) yeah, like I was not a metal kid at all. Like I didn't grow up in metal at all. Like I grew up more in hip hop, like Tupac, Piggy, like that was all my stuff growing up. RYAN RAYLE (23:04.947) Okay. RYAN RAYLE (23:08.906) Okay, now we are closer as a unit because that's, mean, was one of the very first hip hop songs that I ever heard was B.I.G. and this girl named Leneese Hanna, seventh grade, put a pair of headphones on with a little Walkman and she's like, listen, Ryan, play. And I was like, my God, what is this? And then the whole, I mean, I'm from central North Carolina and at that time rap and hip hop was not, you know, Release The Captive (23:12.086) Yeah Release The Captive (23:26.261) No. RYAN RAYLE (23:36.885) It was frowned upon in the local area and I'll just leave it at that if you know if you know if you know what I'm saying. So all of my CDs might you know got ruined. And anyway I'm sorry I'm I'm reliving a moment here in my younger days. But yes I do. I am I am an avid fan of not only yesterday's hip hop and R &B but also none of the mumble rap shit that can. I would have I would have. Release The Captive (23:40.497) You Release The Captive (23:49.911) You RYAN RAYLE (24:04.97) lived without that, but that's good. So how did you go from a hip-hop kid to metal? and real quick, we can pause right here. Am I hearing like just a solid tone? Release The Captive (24:17.399) can kind of hear it too. It's the fan. Go ahead and turn it off. No, I think it's gotta be the fan. Go ahead and turn it off. I'm pretty sure that'll kill it. Yeah, that's it. That was it. Yeah, I'm sorry. Like I said, we're trying to figure out this new home and I noticed that as well. It's in all the bedrooms actually. The fans have this weird hum. RYAN RAYLE (24:20.524) It's okay. I thought I thought it was like a feedback RYAN RAYLE (24:37.312) Nope. yeah, it was a dude. It to me it sounded like, okay, guys, we're still here. We're still recording. This is great. yeah, just and reset. No, no. So yeah, there's some times where you'll it sounded like the end of credit says boo. Release The Captive (24:45.641) There we go. Release The Captive (24:56.927) Yeah, exactly. That's what it was like a little monotone just continuous like a continuous month. My apologies. RYAN RAYLE (24:59.582) Monotone, yeah, okay. No, no, no, no, it's okay. just wanted to make sure that, again, I care about the quality, so I don't want to, you Now, what I care about is the audio and video quality, how hot it is in that room, I cannot control. I have a feeling that you guys have been in a small room and been all sweaty before. Is this true? guys have, so... Release The Captive (25:07.699) Absolutely, yeah, we're all about quality, man. Release The Captive (25:16.343) It's okay, no, we got a good AC guy to keep moving over here. Release The Captive (25:25.815) Yeah in a professional manner. RYAN RAYLE (25:27.468) Perfect. It's like we got our own house now, buddy. Release The Captive (25:35.507) Hey, best speaking more towards the music in the direction we're heading towards. Yeah. Yeah. I know the whole new metal thing and all the stuff where these are different elements and Trey having such a diverse background, you know, my brother and I Carlos, we grew up primarily on like old school, you know, 80s Eddie Van Halen and Ozzy Osbourne and stuff. RYAN RAYLE (25:36.704) But yeah. man. Yeah. Yeah. Fucking left turn. Left turn. RYAN RAYLE (25:59.122) yeah, I'm sorry for those. These are brothers, right? the Delgado Brothers. Release The Captive (26:02.624) Mm-hmm. Release The Captive (26:06.083) Yeah, they'll know God brothers. Yes here. Yes here RYAN RAYLE (26:08.264) Yeah, sorry. Go ahead. Release The Captive (26:09.983) No, you're good. And yes, so so our father, you know, our dad, your old man, he was he was a huge Eddie Van Halen nut Ozzy and everything like that. So we always had these records on hand. We would play them all the time. So I guess you could say that with with Martin or Tray's upbringings with his rap and hip hop influences and mine and Carlisle's kind of old school 80s metal influences. And then we're trying to make this whole like new metal thing kind of come together with with more dynamic and kind of more diversity to it. So, yeah, it definitely has elements that you could probably pull from a lot of these eras, eras, know, that we're describing here. And we're really excited about it because it's, kind of our own uniqueness to it. you know, hearing something like, know, like a new metal song, but Hey, there's a crazy eighties guitar solo in it, or, know, a genti breakdown, you know, those are things that we're really excited about introducing into this genre. And we're not right. We're not trying to, reinvent the wheel here. We're just, we're just having fun with it and seeing, you know, if it picks up. so far, we've been putting out this new material and we haven't even RYAN RAYLE (26:48.001) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (26:53.588) Yeah. Release The Captive (27:09.837) actually released it officially but we have been playing it live lately and it has been very well received of our fans audiences they enjoyed a lot I you know we did a South by show last month at the you know middle of March Empire control women surprisingly it went surprisingly well actually we were the only metal act that night and I don't even know how we got booked but yeah yeah it turns it trades really really good about booking stuff RYAN RAYLE (27:31.468) Daniel you got your own camera look at that. It's okay. Release The Captive (27:38.423) But yeah, you know it went really well and it was really really fun and awesome to see you know a lot of these our new material really picking up so Segwaying into I would say I'm not gonna try and steer this conversation too far away, but RYAN RAYLE (27:54.996) No, dude, please, I'm terrible at that, so. Release The Captive (27:56.759) Okay, so yeah, so these new songs were actually gearing up right now in the summertime to record them with with our drummer Danny You know, he's just picked up the sticks a couple years ago He's only got one single out with us, which is Sadman's Parade, which we'll get into a little later here But yeah, we were in the plans right now to record these new year songs and I want to hopefully release them over the summer. And right now we've been test driving them. We're working some parts and stuff and seeing how it goes over. And it's just been really, really awesome to see everyone really get down with it. So yeah, we're really looking forward to it, man. We have a busy summer ahead of us. Got a lot of work in front of us and we're just going to keep, you know, chomping down and see what we can do. RYAN RAYLE (28:35.817) Yeah, man, I you said something there that I want to make sure that that we highlight is that You have songs that you play live but are not released, correct? Okay, so for those listening and watching this is why you need to go to local shows is because They will this has been this has been a pattern ever since music has been created Like he said they go and test drive it. It's the in-car test So first they do the mix they'll go the in-car test the in-car test pass. They put it on stage Release The Captive (28:46.133) That is correct. RYAN RAYLE (29:05.503) Maybe, I know some bands might go out of town to kind of, know, flesh some stuff out because they want to show the hometown crowd, you know, what it exactly looks like. But then there's this other option where they're like, fuck it, let's, the hometown crowd is going to tell us what we really need to know. So let's go practice this. So I think that's great. So the point of this message here is. Go see the locals because you're going to pro there may be a chance more times than not that you're going to hear songs live That you may hear later down the road that are you know, maybe a little more polished Maybe they might have a little different mix on them or might be a little bit of an arrangement change But the cool thing is you heard that song and it will only ever be played like that ever once There will never be a repeat, right? Release The Captive (29:55.389) Absolutely. Yeah, that's that's that's it and that that's your you're absolutely right Ryan That's exactly the kind of promotion that we need to be, you know, gear helping people with is don't be afraid to put yourself out there And it's great. You you are absolutely there's nothing wrong with you putting Unfinished material or material that you're working on I mean, it's it's a great way to test it like we were just saying and you see how people respond and a lot of times You might be more surprised than anything, you know We've actually been playing with another group who just came up you might have already RYAN RAYLE (30:13.448) Absolutely. Release The Captive (30:25.273) We've talked to him or heard him with him or he KLTR Yeah, yeah, no, they did. RYAN RAYLE (30:27.92) yeah, yeah, they did the battle for Valken. That was actually the first time I've ever seen them. Release The Captive (30:33.239) Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And they're doing really well. They just went through a little bit of a lineup change, but we've been playing with them a few times and those guys have been great. They've been playing a lot of material that they haven't even released. And a lot of this stuff is really, really good. So I like that. That, know, just don't, I would say my advice to other musicians, especially if you're performing is to don't be afraid to try something new, you know, just go out there half half. It's all about enjoying yourself. If you can't really enjoy yourself doing anything in this business, music wise, RYAN RAYLE (30:55.232) Yeah. Yeah. Release The Captive (31:02.677) then you really, what are you doing it for? That's the whole point of us doing it, right? Is to enjoy it, to have fun. I mean, you wanna make people move. You wanna make people feel something. You want to engage. I love engaging with audiences and fan members. It's always a fun dynamic. RYAN RAYLE (31:04.737) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (31:16.449) yeah. yeah. Release The Captive (31:18.007) And that's really the whole point of playing music, I think, that I don't see any other reason to it. I mean, I know there are people out there that actually will just do it because they just want the fame, the money, and blah, blah, blah. mean, it doesn't exist these days right now, you know? Unless you're like a Taylor Swift or something. RYAN RAYLE (31:32.746) Yeah. Hey, And I'll jump on the I'll jump on the T swizzle hate train every now and again. But, you know, no, yes. Release The Captive (31:43.945) I have no hate for whatsoever. I'm impressed. I'm very impressed with her. I'm like, I'm surprised. Like she got as far as she has. And I mean, she's good. She's really good. RYAN RAYLE (31:51.818) Yeah, yeah, I mean exactly like again we can we can go down the tea the yeah We can go down the tea swuzzle reddit for fucking millennia But it just goes to show that you know it takes a different form formula for different things to work so when getting out on live stage if you have a song that you need to figure out or you're not exactly Sounds good in practice sounds good in the car, but doesn't quite deliver Release The Captive (32:08.524) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (32:18.54) you know, somewhere else, you're like, well, fuck it, man, we got a show this weekend, let's just play this one song in the middle of the set, you know, work some shit out, you know, because I see, I see the band's up there kind of like, it's almost like there's inside jokes or I know there's definitely inside jokes, but there's also other things going on where like, for example, the bassist will turn around to the drummer and all of a sudden there's like this whole ass conversation going on and you're in the stage, you know, you're like, you're like in the crowd, like, the fuck are they talking about? Like, Release The Captive (32:32.789) Yeah. Release The Captive (32:40.375) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (32:45.708) Like what's going on? so Carlos, let me, what's one of the things, cause I know that being able to be a cohesive unit on stage is one of the most, if not the most vital parts of being a live band. So you have to have that like, that fucking that, whatever this is, this connection. Release The Captive (33:03.703) Mm-hmm. Release The Captive (33:11.287) you RYAN RAYLE (33:12.692) What do you and Daniel do? Like, what is your relationship on stage? Release The Captive (33:17.397) I feel like I, for one, I really love playing the bass and drums together, but I feel like I gotta put my actual body too into the movements of how that rhythm is going. RYAN RAYLE (33:31.509) Yeah. Release The Captive (33:32.151) And I feel like he does such a great job of what he does playing drums. I mean, he fits in really well. I mean, that's just, I don't know, even I would say off stage is when we have like a better connection that makes it like more like connected, you know, on stage. RYAN RAYLE (33:44.831) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (33:48.252) Sure. Yeah, of course. Daniel, how, what's, what's something that you look forward to every, every session on stage? Release The Captive (33:58.613) man, just bringing in the heat, just getting in there and tear down the roof. And like every time we play or sorry, a lot of times where we play, we are really a powerhouse. We're really shine. And if we're feeling down or anything like that, that won't happen. So what I'm looking for is just, RYAN RAYLE (34:05.42) Look over here. Hahaha! Release The Captive (34:22.517) You know, hyping, hype everyone in and get it done. Carlos here is one of the most energetic players I've ever seen because he does such, he carries all the work. Really? He does all these spins. He jumps, does all these crazy things. So, so it's easy just to plug in and you know what I'm saying? So, so, so it's really cool. These boys are being way too modest. No, there is actually a rhyme to the reason, man. So, RYAN RAYLE (34:43.646) Ha ha ha. Release The Captive (34:52.473) The way these guys get so tight is I force him to get tight so No chemistry at all. He just forces us RYAN RAYLE (34:57.324) So wait, you officially declaring bandad status right now? Okay, alright. That fucking bandad. Release The Captive (35:06.217) I am bad dad. my God. I've never heard that before, but that sounds about right. Yeah. No. So, so, so to, to, to be frank about the whole situation with them and the tightness of in the queasiveness, what I have strived for is, is specific. My God, my words specifically that is that, you know, when Danny first came to us, it's not that he didn't know or. couldn't use a metronome, it was one of those things that wasn't like a standard. And I was like, no, we're going to be on a click the entire time. And I gave him a guide. And Carlos is just really, really good about locking into that guide. All Danny needs is just that click. And once he gets that going, it's just solid rhythms just through. It's continuous. It's consistent. RYAN RAYLE (35:30.465) Great. RYAN RAYLE (35:44.64) Gotcha. Release The Captive (35:48.499) The guys put in all the work. I guess when I'm saying they're being modest, they really absolutely are. And we're so strict on our practices. We practice at least twice a week. Yeah, at least twice a week altogether. And everything's all done through DI. So we've had to really figure out technology and get all that going. RYAN RAYLE (35:57.077) There you go. Release The Captive (36:05.257) Everything's all in ears, you know, because we live in a small home. I can't have people complaining, you know, the drums are loud and blah, blah. If anything, most people are fucking freaking out because you're hearing screams. You probably think somebody's dying because other than that, all you hear is just, you know, clicks and pops because it's all DI'd. Yeah, that's that's how we're able to maintain that practice regime is that, you know, everything's electronic. Because if we had to go to a studio or rehearsal space every time we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot. So. RYAN RAYLE (36:10.316) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (36:15.776) Hahaha! Yeah. is everything like e-kitted? Okay. RYAN RAYLE (36:26.315) You Yeah. I keep thinking about this video, it's just stuck into my head. It's one of those that you just scroll in and the algorithm's like, watch this. And it's like, what you hear and it's like the band on stage. And then it was like, what they hear and it's just, you know what I mean? Cause it shifted from, the video shifted from the band being played on stage with obviously like a layered audio track over it. Release The Captive (36:39.989) Yeah. Release The Captive (36:45.631) Yeah, exactly. Release The Captive (36:50.357) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (37:00.128) And then it shifted over to like the band practice and everybody's got their headphones on with the e-kit. So all you hear is just like, then you just hear the strings plucking and, and, the vocalist is just kind know, so it's like, I understand what you're saying that the worst part of your practice is screams. And so I would just, you should like go around to your neighbors, just the immediate ones. I'm assuming you're in apartment probably, or maybe a house. good. Okay. Release The Captive (37:07.659) Yeah. Release The Captive (37:13.175) Yeah Yeah. Release The Captive (37:26.573) no, no, no. Thank you. We're liberating a home. So donor house is fine. We're, finding a house. It's just funny that that's, that's literally what it is, is, you know, I'm, I'm sure people are walking their dogs and you're just nothing, but like a pterodactyl coming out of the house. yeah. I've had my partner come in between like just getting groceries or something. And she's like, we're during practice. All you hear is just like, just tapping and then screens. She's like, I'm going to go to the gym. But, but, but you know, in all seriousness, no. RYAN RAYLE (37:31.326) Okay. RYAN RAYLE (37:38.58) Hahaha! RYAN RAYLE (37:48.598) Yeah. Release The Captive (37:54.487) I'm not serious. This is that it's really played in our to our favor. You know, we've gotten very tight, very cohesive. So when you ask that question to Carlos and Danny, I'm like, man, these like I have to say they're being very modest. They're they're way better than they give themselves credit for. Danny, he's the pro with now with the metronome. He knows how to use a guide track. All of us do, but I mean. RYAN RAYLE (37:59.735) Mm-hmm. RYAN RAYLE (38:15.019) Yeah. Release The Captive (38:15.069) You know, it's crazy and it's I like that you brought up the whole thing about how what you do in the studio and rehearsal How do you get that to translate on stage? And that's a big thing. I see a lot of bands like that can release digital content, but it's all like All overproduced it's all cut up and you know when they go to perform it live They can't even do the damn thing and half the time they have to use backing tracks We guide tracks you people get them to do it. We do all that beforehand So when we get on the stage, we're not even needing any of that material as a matter of fact RYAN RAYLE (38:22.707) Right. RYAN RAYLE (38:29.899) Yep. RYAN RAYLE (38:40.37) so when you get on, you have no click. Release The Captive (38:43.671) I had the click is only being fed to Danny. That's it. He's the only one with the click. Everyone else just follows him. I want we wanted to keep it as live as possible. And also the click helps us keep on time. You know, you come and take it. They're very strict on the time set. So we want to make sure and that's actually that should be a general application to any venue you play. always want to be on time. RYAN RAYLE (38:53.484) I can appreciate that. RYAN RAYLE (39:01.686) brother. RYAN RAYLE (39:07.019) Yes, sir. Release The Captive (39:07.603) So, you know, if they say 25 minutes, 25 minutes. as a matter of fact, when I, curator said, it's not going to be 25 minutes. like, we're to make it about 23 minutes. So we have a couple of minutes of leeway. Always want to be prepared. RYAN RAYLE (39:18.956) Ladies gentlemen, this is a professional tip from a local band. Okay? This is one of the things that I've learned. So I, as you guys know, I'm a judge here and there. And one of the, and that is probably one of the highest or most heavily weighted scores is your time. You could kill the set. You could have the most people show up. But if you, if you start early because the other band was a little bit early, that's okay. Cause That's just gifted time and as long as the front of house as long as everybody's ready to go and you and the sound guy are like Can we kick it you turn around and tell the rest of the guys? Hey guys, we got an extra minute right now now that you've planned for 23 You always have because here's what I and this is just a piece of advice for everybody and this is not for Shattles or this is just I think this is a good piece of advice coming from someone that's spoken to you know hundreds if Definitely not thousands hundreds Release The Captive (40:14.919) Laughter RYAN RAYLE (40:15.468) But as a judge and as a fan of going to music and watching the live sets but also knowing the behind the scenes thing you should always plan one to two minutes short of your set. You should always plan to have a backup song in the event that something happens. do you guys do guitar changes during sets? Okay. So. Release The Captive (40:38.303) Yes, we do. And that is also very well planned. You know, we make sure that we're not changing often. It's going to be only like one amount of times. RYAN RAYLE (40:44.308) Yeah, one song or you know, one set. Yeah, so because and then, you know, also if you're doing in ears or if you have a wireless setup, make sure that there is a wired option around you. You know where it's at. And if some shit goes down, you can fix it within 10 seconds. Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Release The Captive (40:59.583) Spare batteries for the course actually just double everything I double up on everything III mean I have extra guitars there I have batteries extra chords and trust me we were in a situation at one point where I had to everyone needed batteries Danny's his inners went out my Carlos's wireless went on and they were like I Me being the band dad. I have it all in my bag. So it's all there So yeah, I had the extra chords extra batteries and yeah, I wanted to make sure that we built total redundancy into our setup I want to make sure that you know RYAN RAYLE (41:13.464) wow. RYAN RAYLE (41:20.544) Yep. RYAN RAYLE (41:24.704) But yeah. Release The Captive (41:29.337) we get up there, we're ready to perform. I wanna be the fastest person to set up, I wanna be the fastest person to get down. We set ourselves our timelines. As a matter of fact, we record a lot of our own videos and here's another thing that I would consider crucial advice. Your setup and breakdown, it's gotta be almost instantaneous. RYAN RAYLE (41:34.721) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (41:44.428) Yep. Seven minutes. Seven minutes. That's it. It is. is. Release The Captive (41:47.947) There's exactly. Yeah, we probably crushed that. It's so crucial. And honestly, setting up is a lot longer than breaking down, breaking down. All you got to do is just chuck it off the stage, dude. Just get it off the stage. RYAN RAYLE (41:58.807) Do you? Unless unless it's the back line cabs, don't fucking touch those, right? Because that brother that's having they started raking off cabs are like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. He's like, and the guy was he and that's it. He was just in go mode. He was like, my God, dude, I'm so sorry. I was just he was like cab cable, cable, cable cab snake. Fuck, that's not mine. Bring it back. Release The Captive (42:04.903) Yeah, other than that, other than that, if it doesn't need to be up there, just throw it off the stage, dude. Release The Captive (42:12.297) Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Release The Captive (42:21.591) You yeah, no, your own stuff for sure. But yeah, I get it. People jump in, they wanna help. And that's so awesome when people do that. But know what you have. Always keep an inventory list of your gear. These are all just some small things. RYAN RAYLE (42:25.931) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (42:33.58) Oh, man. So I am kind of a nerd, and this is something that other nerds have told me, especially if you've got one of those like spaceship quad core racks that you're just hauling in and hauling off anything that has a lid on it. As soon as that lid opens, there needs to be a list of everything in that in that bag or box or whatever. Even it's just a guitar. Just lift the lid. just says fucking guitar. And you look down and you're like, that's a fucking guitar. Close lid lock and move on. Release The Captive (42:45.825) Yeah. Release The Captive (42:53.931) Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (43:03.552) But yeah, because I mean, know you guys struggle with, especially come and take it even though it's a big venue. It's a tight space back there with load in load out. So there's really only room for realistically three setups total. I mean, drums, forget about it. Maybe one set at best, two if you're really squeezing it. But I think that's great that you guys are thinking, you're already that far forward. So redundancy. Release The Captive (43:10.474) Yeah, yeah. RYAN RAYLE (43:30.228) you know, set time on and off, tear down on and off, backup song, backup gear, backup batteries. Do you guys have backup musicians? Release The Captive (43:39.991) actually i wouldn't say i'm not gonna say no to take the only the only person yeah know i guess it yeah no we we did RYAN RAYLE (43:42.102) Hey. You're like, I'm going on vacation. I need a break. Hey, Tommy, you want to come and play? Okay, thanks. Release The Captive (43:56.203) Nah, you know actually speaking to that to be fair, you know, we're all working musicians here and we've we've Every time we book our shows we make sure they're planned out in advance We do get the ones on the on the whim and we'll take those when we can and they're always a lot of fun But they're always the most stressful because they're not planned So most of our gigs are usually very well curated very well planned out All of us have scheduled time off. We make sure that we're all available, you know And if you know things at the fan because they will life happens it'll you know RYAN RAYLE (44:08.3) Of Release The Captive (44:26.137) Life the least curve as a matter of fact, I can tell you this for sure Last month. I actually had a little bit of a breakdown of just stressed out with work and stuff I didn't even think I was gonna be able to pull through we had a show that weekend and honestly if it wasn't for the guys Yeah, I probably wouldn't have pulled through But but yeah, I mean RYAN RAYLE (44:40.939) Man. Release The Captive (44:43.063) All that is very important to us. Like I said early at the beginning of our conversation here was that we wanted it from where we started as a, know, me just hanging out at a bar, starting this band with the, you know, a project with the, with just a bartender to, where we are now, where we want to be considered professionals. And I like to think that people take us professionally, you know, they take us serious. And it's been like that. We've gotten very good responses. My first thing to also, again, more advice I guess I could, could give is get really, really chummy with the sound engineer. Every, every venue you go to. RYAN RAYLE (45:11.796) Yeah, yeah, that that is your friend. You may not like him as a person, but as a professional, that dude is is is your bread and butter. And if you got a beef with the sound guy, your sound is going to be absolutely shit. Release The Captive (45:13.057) man buy him a drink if you have to dude yeah it is your best friend for that night dude Release The Captive (45:26.623) Right. Release The Captive (45:30.859) Yeah, and extra preparedness here is, know, my thing, I, we actually may have a PDF of our stage setups that way when we have a stage plot, we just give it to the sound engineer and just, if I could afford one, you want to do it right? You available? RYAN RAYLE (45:40.032) Hey, what if you get your own sound engineer? I don't know. Hey man, just Okay, look, know in my ear I know what sounds good, but I... You could... Release The Captive (45:52.029) Yeah, think that's the big thing too is that you know that's why I have to give them a lot of credit man. They have to cure it to every single band that gets up there. RYAN RAYLE (45:59.873) Yeah, because I mean, everybody has a different tone. They have different techniques. They have different instruments, different amps, different cabs, different different drumheads, different tunings. It's just like fuck. And you can only make you can only make everything sound as good as it can sound because it where it starts is with the musicians. Right. You you can you can push the game. You can bring down stuff out of the fucking higher frequencies. But but I mean, if if I'll just say this, I know one of the Release The Captive (46:18.589) Exactly. RYAN RAYLE (46:28.8) Taylor, this isn't a call out, he'll tell you to your face. Hit the fucking drum, right? That's one of the biggest problems that he always complains about is like during either sound check or during live, it's, you know, maybe there's not enough kick, maybe there's not enough snare, crashes sound great, but his tom is flat. Like it's just stuff like that, but then, you know, then it kicks in over to other guitars like, you know, maybe he doesn't have the most really Release The Captive (46:29.815) Hmm. Yeah, he... RYAN RAYLE (46:57.362) Extravagant setup, but he does have it fucking dialed in and his pedals are great But there's just something you can kind of tweak But if it just comes to like actually playing your guitar, okay for vocalist, right? You got to be able to fucking Project like some guys will cup the mic hardcore style and then other guys are way back here because they got a they got a belt it out So Trey, how do you? How do you make the sound guy like you? Release The Captive (47:22.807) Well, just basic etiquette like, yeah, don't cut the mic for sure and Right, got to get you got to get the grit for the arf but also just Be two inches away from the mic like and don't smell it a lot of people do this like Yeah, the pick yeah the pick up a sniff. I've seen that a lot RYAN RAYLE (47:27.468) Unless it's an ARF, right? ARF ARF! Like you gotta... that's a... Yeah. Anyway. RYAN RAYLE (47:42.706) That's it right there. That's it. Yep. the pickup, right? Release The Captive (47:51.479) And yeah, just keep it right here. Like, I have it right here, just two inches. You just gotta leave it right there. That's it. Or I'll put that on the t-shirt. RYAN RAYLE (47:53.175) Yeah. Just. There you go, folks. Two inches from your mouth. That's where it needs to be. Actually, that'll just be the headline. Release the captive two inches from your mouth. RYAN RAYLE (48:10.632) my God. So we'll kind of stick with this thread. Trey, we'll keep going with you and then we'll go over to Danny and Carlos. Whenever you guys are on stage, what's one of the most important things for you whenever you're doing sound check, whenever you're setting the levels before you hit the stage with the sound guy? What are you looking for? Release The Captive (48:32.535) For myself, I just want to make sure I can hear myself through the monitor. And I started recently just putting in just one earbud. That way can hear my chest voice and also I can hear the stage monitor. That way I just have like a better understanding where my like I can hear myself completely and fully. And then just enough like guitar and bass to where it's like not overpowering. RYAN RAYLE (48:46.486) Gotcha. Release The Captive (49:01.399) Because yeah, I want to know where we're at, but mainly I'm just listening to Danny Just cuz I know like just the cues of everything so like if I know like where he's at then I know where I'm at So that's just it for me RYAN RAYLE (49:10.954) Gotcha. All right. Danny, whenever you are getting set up in your state, your sound check, what what are the what are you looking for? What are you? Release The Captive (49:20.829) I'm looking that the heads are equalized right, the right way that I like them to sound. And I don't like resonation at all. So I also sometimes like to communicate that and then the monitors. I know, look at that camera. It's hard man. It is. It's like the face is over here. Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (49:34.412) Danny, look at this one over here. RYAN RAYLE (49:40.909) I know that's why... You know what? I'll say this. would bet to believe that whenever I go to edit this, the other guy's camera will actually probably catch you guys. be honest, sometimes it does have a wider field of view. So honestly, I don't care which camera you look at. I'm more concerned about what you care about whenever you're setting up so that you can deliver a good performance. Release The Captive (50:01.974) Yeah, let's get it. Let's get it. Release The Captive (50:11.669) Yeah, the first thing is setting it the right way because I have so much stuff because that's the first thing that I care about. I definitely have so much shit that. Yeah. How many pieces? well, I I had two octobands, but without that, it's like a five piece. Well, but with like 20 symbols. Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (50:21.58) I was gonna say, how many pieces? How many pieces? How many, how many pieces is your kit? RYAN RAYLE (50:32.214) Okay. No, yeah, that's what I'm saying. Like, yeah, like we got snare, floor tom, kick, crash, ride. Like, what are we working with? Release The Captive (50:39.575) Yeah, like the snare, the kick, two rack, one floor and that's it for the shells. But then I have all the cymbals, have two splashes. I have like a really weird stack. It's two shinies and a ninja star. What's the number? Shit, I don't know, like 11, 12. RYAN RAYLE (50:53.302) Okay, how many cymbals we got Danny? RYAN RAYLE (51:02.516) HAHAHA Okay, so we've got somewhere close to a 10 to 15 piece drum kit. Okay, okay. Release The Captive (51:09.271) Yeah, yeah, something like that. So that's the first thing I want to, you know, get out of the way. But then when we're doing the sound check, I just want my snare and my ractums to vibrate the right way and to be prepared. And that's it. And then I'm just talking with the guy, hey, a little bit more here and there, whatever, or pick up the guitar, something like that. And that's it. Here you go. RYAN RAYLE (51:32.928) Okay. All right. Good sound check. And then last but not least, thick, the thickness of the thickness. What is, what is, what is the glue? I call the bass the glue. Everyone says you don't need bass. I, I, you do. You fucking do. You need, you need all four, five or six strings, whatever the guy's working with. So. Release The Captive (51:40.811) Man. I disagree strongly. Yeah, seven and whatever. You know, it's counting really. Well, man, no, definitely the base is the glue. feel like, man, I don't know. I feel like I'm the quickest to put on my gear up and take it down. So I'm always the one help also helping out. So when drums are Adam or his needs, you know, extra hands on guitars and stuff to move stuff off the stage, man, I'm always right there, you know, as soon as I get my, throw my stuff out. but before that, I mean, it's just, you know, quick tune up. RYAN RAYLE (51:59.469) man. RYAN RAYLE (52:16.31) Right. Release The Captive (52:23.155) Make sure I got the right amount of space to where I'm going to be moving around and do my stuff and then you know, whenever I do the vocal check same thing as long as I can hear I really don't need to hit myself. I just have my normal earplugs in but aside from that, you know as long as I have some guitar on the wedge and you know Danny's right there next to me I could usually just follow that and Be alright. I've definitely you know have wireless, you know, you move over to the other guitarist and you can't hear anything except the guitar So, you know, that's pretty RYAN RAYLE (52:49.266) right. Yeah, because you're you're almost switching to like his setup in a sense. OK, man, I didn't even think about that because, if if if and I encourage I mean, I like everybody because when I go to a live stage, I'm like, we're there to see a show and you guys are there to put on a show. And I think that I think that reciprocity is very good because, know, we all we've all been to shows where there's just a band just standing on stage playing music. Right. That. OK. Release The Captive (52:52.191) Yes, exactly. Release The Captive (53:01.695) Mm-hmm. Release The Captive (53:10.807) We try not to be that bad RYAN RAYLE (53:16.3) But you said, you also, cause you're also a backup vocals, right? As well or gang, I don't call them that and it's not gang vocals, group vocals. Release The Captive (53:22.067) I guess Gangvel. They're like more fry vocals. I mean, it's not the hardest thing for me to like pull you to pull off and play, but it's definitely adds a little more texture to some of the songs and stuff. And, you know, I think also the crowd appreciates it's to, you know, give Trey a little bit of a breather. RYAN RAYLE (53:25.152) Gotcha. RYAN RAYLE (53:37.132) No, yeah, I always like it when there's kind of a, you know, it just adds more. You know, it's like if you've got two guitars and there's a harmony or, you know, it's something to that effect. Yeah. Release The Captive (53:44.224) Yeah. There's also a little more texture there to it. You it's like you're used to hearing the lead singer scream and then you hear like something else. You're like, that's all right. All right. heard it, Trey. No, no way. Actually, to add to that, it calls us right about the base concept that he's got. Our construct as our music is. RYAN RAYLE (53:55.597) You're like, maybe he should be the lead singer. Huh? No. No, that was not a shot fired at you, Trey, I promise. was... RYAN RAYLE (54:09.196) You Release The Captive (54:15.051) Bass and guitar, you know, that's why I've never really entertained the idea of having a second guitarist because we always liked the idea of having the bass fill in for a lot of the rhythm section of the music. And it just adds more personality. Like Carl said, texture is good word to use. not, but yeah, but even then it's incredible how he's able to pull off harmonies and, and, you know, do bass fills that completely did. RYAN RAYLE (54:30.506) No, I mean, that's perfect. Release The Captive (54:40.721) I won. love bass. just love the bass guitar dynamic and I like that. That's the option we chose was I could have easily auditioned other guitarists and filled in some extra rhythm. But we prefer the sound. as it comes from our again, our early influences like the 80s stuff, you know, when it was Ozzy was just Randy Rhoads and Rudy Sarza on the bass and guitar legends. Well, then you got Van Halen and Michael Anthony just bass and guitar. And their music was always incredible. And we just love that dynamic of that type of music. RYAN RAYLE (54:46.732) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (54:59.542) fucking four piece, you know? RYAN RAYLE (55:09.899) Yeah. Release The Captive (55:09.943) And having to do that and then also play the stuff we play today gets a little bit. That's that's where I think it gets interesting with with our sound is that it's it's not a typical, you know, to twin guitar harmonies, metal core stuff, blah, blah, blah. It's actual like really well written bass parts, really well written drum parts and guitar parts and everything acts in harmony. know, everything that we do, like I said, has a reason for it. And yeah, Carlos's and Danny's presence is just undeniable. You know, when you see those guys on stage, you know, they're hitting like Carl said, man, that guy moves. He moves, man. And Danny, Danny's a personality and he's he's got the whole Danny. call him Danny Aztec, man. He's got this whole Aztec thing and showmanship that that's so important to us. It's a big, big thing. And I think it's big in music. Like you were just saying earlier, it's like I don't I came to see a show. I don't want to see a couple of dudes just looking down, just staring and you know, I RYAN RAYLE (55:44.026) Yeah RYAN RAYLE (55:55.369) Okay. RYAN RAYLE (56:02.381) I don't want to see what you do in your room, bro. Like, I want to see what you do on stage. Release The Captive (56:04.793) Yeah, yeah. Yeah man, move. You know, that's the point. Move, shake your hips, know, move a little bit, shake your butt, get people moving. RYAN RAYLE (56:14.669) It's all it all is in the hips ladies and gentlemen, it's all in the hips Hey, I was curious. Danny you said you're from you said you're from Mexico. You moved here two years ago Release The Captive (56:18.855) I agree. Release The Captive (56:27.147) Yes. No, I moved like 10 years ago. Yeah. And I've been many cities, man. I started Chicago and then Boston, LA, Boston again. And now I'm here. It's been three years here. Hey, Danny, tell me about your education, man. Yeah. so yeah. So fuck hospitality management. I have two degrees in hospitality management, but fuck that. I then went to Berkeley in Boston. RYAN RAYLE (56:29.9) ten years ago. RYAN RAYLE (56:40.877) Holy crap. Why? RYAN RAYLE (56:49.995) HAHAHAHA! Release The Captive (56:56.907) And that's yeah, yeah, we, we did, we did. Yeah. When I first joined the band and we had an interview, I think that we talked about it like briefly. Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (56:57.126) wait, I feel like we've had this conversation before. Okay, yes, yeah, you're a Berkeley guy. Okay. RYAN RAYLE (57:09.195) Yeah. So I recently spoke to some, God, it's New York, NYU, NHU. There's another program over in New York and I was curious if there was any beef between the New York crowd and the Berkeley gang. Release The Captive (57:25.039) yeah, definitely, definitely. Berkeley also has like beef within itself, bro, like it's a crazy thing, but... RYAN RAYLE (57:33.745) That's there's a band called Chronologist. They're not I don't think they're a band anymore, but they were all Berklee grads. And that was some of the most spiciest polyrhythm music I have ever heard. And but what I what I found out is like Berklee is more of a of university for music that you can go and actually be really good at your instrument, whereas the NYU is you can be good at the music, music like. Release The Captive (57:41.376) Mm. Release The Captive (57:47.255) Mm. RYAN RAYLE (58:01.23) audio engineering and like the behind the scenes kind of stuff. So like they have their own, I guess, lanes or you know what I mean. So, wow, so Berkeley, that's right. As soon as you started saying you were here, here, here, here, I was like, wait, we've mentioned this before. But that's, so why, if I asked this before, my apologies, but why Austin? How did, like, why here? Release The Captive (58:15.489) Yeah. Release The Captive (58:24.183) The main reason is that I was so fed up with the winter of Boston and that's the main reason. But then I also wanted to find the best music place. Austin is branded as the world capital for live music and it also has great fishing spots. I'm a fisherman. Yeah, hell yeah. So I was like, you know what, let me check that out. it's lake all the way, baby. RYAN RAYLE (58:39.468) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (58:42.829) you like fishing? Okay. Are you more of a Are you more are you more lake or sea? Lake, lake fishing. OK, all right. We're going to get a boat. We're going to go out. No, I know I'm telling you, this is this is why I keep I just I'm reiterating to myself. It's like it's like conversations with people are like writing music. I just have to keep practicing. So I do. You could ask my wife. I ask her when she goes to work every day and it's there's a there's a calendar. Release The Captive (58:53.855) Yeah, yeah, see, see, nah, nah, All right, fuck yeah. We've had this conversation, RTC, let's get a row boat. RYAN RAYLE (59:19.853) on the fridge with her work schedule every day. And I'm the one that told her to put up the whiteboard work schedule. But yet every day I asked her, hey, what time are you going to work? Ryan, you ask me this every fucking day. Oh, oh yeah, it's right here on the... So if I've asked you a million questions, this goes for anybody that ever wants to talk to me ever. I'm going to ask you things that we've talked about before. Just go with it. Just I'm old. I'm, you know, early signs of dementia. So... Release The Captive (59:45.365) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (59:49.965) man. Release The Captive (59:50.081) feel that I'm there too man. Yeah, that's funny you say the boat thing actually we actually entered literally entertained the idea as a band to get a boat together. We were thinking about getting a little little boat fishing boat. I think Carlos and I were like, we'll find one. We'll finance it if you guys want to pitch in. I can't believe that. That was a little legit conversation we had as a band. I can't believe we almost had a band boat. Almost got them. Almost got them. RYAN RAYLE (01:00:06.381) Dude, yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:00:11.531) These days, these days you might, yeah, you might as well just, I mean, just there's gotta be a boat rental app. There has to be. There is, I know there is. I'm not even gonna look it up. I just, I know there is. God. man. Boat fishing music. Yeah. The, actually is a boat rental place here in Lake Austin, Lake Travis here in Austin. And they actually have a double decker. I've always wanted to see if I could get like a three or a four piece. Release The Captive (01:00:21.783) Laughter RYAN RAYLE (01:00:40.299) that would be willing to bring all of their gear on that boat and risk it. But I also have to look at like, is that even legal? I mean, I know it's legal, but you know, I'd have to find the right company to allow it. Because I really want to throw it. Because you can like 50 people on that boat. So I think that would be really cool just to do. And it's four hours. You get the boat for three or four hours. Just imagine going on the fucking party boat with a live band. Release The Captive (01:01:03.531) That would be cool. You know, I would think the only thing that they would probably consider when you're asking for that is the weight man power power for sure. I think power and weight. I mean, the power is an easy solution. You could probably just get a generator. Yeah, no, we're good, man. I think I also I know we're already on our end, Ryan. I don't know how long how long would you like to keep this going? I think. RYAN RAYLE (01:01:08.589) Power? Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:01:17.001) Hmm How can we do this let's figure this out, you know what we'll figure this out later I don't want to take up too much of your time RYAN RAYLE (01:01:29.421) I let's see. What time is it? Wait, I gotta, I gotta take kiddo. She, I gotta take her to get a new bike tire. She just being a kid and busted her tires. So, what was, what was cute is she sent me a message. I was out one day and she's like, dad, I need to put air in my tire. It's, it's flat. I'm like, okay, well put air in your tire. And just trying to like help her, you know, be more, you know, critical thinking of herself and do this and that. And, and the text message was. Release The Captive (01:01:36.221) yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:01:56.779) Okay, I filled it up. I'm going to use some super glue to pick to patch this hole. I'm like, okay, being resourceful. And then like two minutes later, yeah, that didn't work. And I was like, all right, problem. Tried to fix it. You know, didn't fix it. So now we need to need to go do something else. So yeah, we just we just have to be out of here the next 15 minutes. But I know I know that I know that we haven't we've kind of been all over the place and, you know, technical difficulties. So Release The Captive (01:02:04.907) Hahaha Release The Captive (01:02:17.267) okay well i got Release The Captive (01:02:23.135) Yeah, I only got I mean if you have anything else you want to bring up I only have one more thing I wanted to discuss Okay Yeah, last thing I wanted to bring up was our newest single which features Danny. It's called Sam and parade You know, we just released no down that one is out when it came out we did that in the fall, right? Yeah, we release last just this past fall RYAN RAYLE (01:02:29.068) No, man, this is more your show than mine, man. So whatever you want to get out to the ether, let's do it. RYAN RAYLE (01:02:41.888) Which is not out, right? Or is released? That's what I thought. RYAN RAYLE (01:02:49.708) I think I have it saved here. Release The Captive (01:02:51.337) Yeah, and it's Danny's first actual debut now. Yeah, he's actually He's he's he did I give him credit for the other singles We just released only because he performs them But technically we did those digitally because we didn't have a drummer at the time. So sad man's technically his actual debut RYAN RAYLE (01:02:53.6) Yeah. Sandman's Parade. Release The Captive (01:03:09.599) Yeah, and it's great, you know, seeing Danny in his studio, man, it was was incredible. To there was some things that we had to get around. First was his drum kit. It wasn't in top shape at the time when we were doing this recording was like two years ago. So we ended up having to use a shout out to Abram Mulvey, by the way, we recorded over in his studio was. Hammer nails. Yeah, hammer nails, hammer nails. Yeah, yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:03:29.92) fucking evil snail hammer no hammer nails it's right down the street from my house yeah Release The Captive (01:03:35.533) yeah, you live right up there, huh? Yeah, no. So Abram was great, man. He you know, he's a drummer himself. So he had his own drum kit and he was like, yes. Yeah. Incredible drummer, man. Really, really also incredible engineering producer. And, you know, he was like, hey, I'm going to work with Danny on some stuff. And he suggested, you know, why don't you try using a trigger? We had never done triggers before. RYAN RAYLE (01:03:41.28) Yep. He used to drum for insurgents? Yes. Yeah, dude. Release The Captive (01:04:00.695) And because of him and Taylor, by the way, when he brought him up as well, they those guys convinced me to get trigger. I was like, oh, shoot. I didn't even know why the hell I haven't used triggers this whole time. And dude, sound guys love those things, dude. I just put the put the one just on the kick drum. That's really where you need it. Especially for it. It only makes sense because of the music we play. And Sad Man's parade actually is the reason why and then getting the trigger the first place, because if you hear that song, Danny does some crazy like quadruplets in there and just fucking mind boggling to you. I'm like, I was already crazy enough RYAN RAYLE (01:04:13.012) Yeah. Yep. Release The Captive (01:04:30.669) me to write that rhythm section to begin with but putting that in there and then having them perform it on the drums is just mind-fucking-blowing. Super incredible. RYAN RAYLE (01:04:37.334) So what I'm hearing is, ladies and gentlemen, you need to listen to Sandman's Parade. Got it, okay. We'll make sure to have that one playing in the beginning of this. I'll make sure. Release The Captive (01:04:42.347) Yes. In summary. Awesome, man. But yeah, mean, other than that single and yes, pushing that, I mean, we're I said, we're going to hit the studio up here in a couple of probably the next six weeks. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, that's that's what I'm going to with. I'm actually going to go ahead and reach out to Abram this week, actually. So come week. RYAN RAYLE (01:04:56.672) You guys gonna come back up here? Okay. RYAN RAYLE (01:05:03.331) yeah, sorry, not to like put you on the spot. Release The Captive (01:05:04.936) No, no, no. Yeah, yeah. I've been talking with him for a while and I've been meaning to do this and we had actually been talking for the last few months and I've been planning to send him these. I he's already had my demos. I've already got all the pre-production done pretty much. And so, yeah, I just need to essentially just work out, you know, the cost and a date. And so we should have those out this summer, RYAN RAYLE (01:05:08.16) Okay. RYAN RAYLE (01:05:25.644) Awesome, dude. Well, whenever you guys release, obviously send over the track and we'll get it on the radio. Release The Captive (01:05:34.429) Yeah, man, we wanted we wanted to send you one of our demos that we're working on and was one of the ones like you said we were performing but trade decided like, hey, you know, let's just wait till we actually get these out. You know, let's let's get your full production and that's that's the plan, man. So. RYAN RAYLE (01:05:45.365) Yeah, dude. RYAN RAYLE (01:05:48.97) Yeah. Release The Captive (01:05:49.683) we're excited. you know, long story short, you know, we're released a captive. have several new singles. We're going to be releasing here in the next few months. We have been a band for approximately six years. We're excited. got a show on May 14th at come and take it live with, who is it poet something, the poets poet, the band poet, the band, yeah, poet, band, and then, and then, and then we also have another show with kilter at Ragnar's on May 30th, which is, RYAN RAYLE (01:06:06.592) I'm full with the band. Release The Captive (01:06:19.417) gonna be an incredible show, I think. Yep. There you go. I think after dark society. It's after dark. Yeah. actually, can you see that? we actually added a, an opener for that show as well. yeah. What's the name? it's like, I know. Yeah, I It's called, RYAN RAYLE (01:06:21.14) Yeah, I think Silence Pecumings on that one and 719. After Dark Society. Okay, yeah, that's right. he's probably got the flyer right there in front him. Nope, just kidding. RYAN RAYLE (01:06:38.948) cool. RYAN RAYLE (01:06:42.668) Everybody's scrambling for the flyer right now. Release The Captive (01:06:48.375) He's a rapper, he's called like boycott something. RYAN RAYLE (01:06:51.116) Okay, so this is May 30th at Ragnar's. This is the one we're talking about right now with KLTR Release The Captive (01:06:55.445) Yeah boycott the world's yeah kill to KLTR the headliner. It's after dark us and sounds becoming I don't know who Trey said we got is opening you put RYAN RAYLE (01:06:59.518) Okay. Silence Becoming. I know why I said 719 because Skyler is the drummer of Silence Becoming. That's why. Okay, got it. See, boycott the world. There you go. Yeah, I can never keep up with the drummers in any of the Texas scenes because they're practically in three projects except, yeah. Danny's like, I'm in six. Release The Captive (01:07:07.999) Yeah. But yeah boycott the world will also be on that bill. Yeah. Release The Captive (01:07:19.167) A lot of them are, yeah. I think at some point Hunter with the restriction, was like, hey, you guys need an extra drummer just in case. So like you said, do you have musicians on standby? I mean, actually we do. RYAN RAYLE (01:07:31.776) Yeah. Hey man, session musicians here in Austin. mean, I was fortunate enough to work with an organization called the A &R Foundation. They are a nonprofit that help musicians basically just become better at their craft, but in all encompassing, like, are you good at business? Are you good at finance? Do you have an LLC? Do you have your rights to your music? You know what I mean? But it's a... So if you guys want to take advantage, mean, if you guys want to look into it, just A &R Foundation. Again, it's a nonprofit here out of Austin. What I was getting at is they basically had this kind of program that they were putting people through. And I had to basically kind of, I didn't score the sheets. was just, there was a point system. So it was like, if this is true, then five points. If this is not true, then zero points. So there was no like bias. Release The Captive (01:08:30.475) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:08:30.864) And I got to kind of see a behind the scenes of what it actually takes to be a band in today's world like you were talking about. And the one thing that I do see missing that I think is where I want to try to kind of fit in or fill the gap is the A &R, the artist and repertoire. Because even major labels have kind of just, they don't really do that anymore. There's no scouting. They're scouting, but you can just see who, like you said, how many fucking? Release The Captive (01:08:57.623) A lot of what... Yeah, that's what they're looking for now these days, Real talent is really hard to find now. mean, because a lot of people are... It's so easy for me to just digitize everything. And you know, have AI and quantizing and all that junk. it's just... The music just starts to sound very phony. Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:08:58.87) How many TikTok streams followers do you have? Yeah. Right. RYAN RAYLE (01:09:16.49) Yeah, and you know, and I really want to, I'm sorry, I'm shuffling through some documents here. not here. So like, A, a TikTok or an Instagram body count, like a number count, isn't going to give you things like this, like a one-off demo that is signed by the band with track labels and you know what I mean? Release The Captive (01:09:44.292) Heck yeah dude, yeah, that's what I'm saying. Yeah, you don't get that. RYAN RAYLE (01:09:47.181) But this is part of being a musician that I think is lost, right? I'm sorry, not a musician, as a band. The guy hanging out at the end of the show handing out burnt discs of your music. And this is, I don't know, if I were a band, that's where I would be. That's the area that I would do. I would just go to shows to support local, not my show. Release The Captive (01:09:52.371) Mm-hmm. Right. Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:10:13.034) I would go to shows to support other local bands and then I would have my demo at the ready and ask the venue, hey, can I just leave these here? These are demos. We have a show. Maybe actually Neverrest did this the other day. They popped into the All Shall Perish show last night or the other night and actually handed out little paper flyers that they printed and cut out themselves. And it's just the flyer just on a sheet of paper that they were handing out. And now it's in your pocket at the end of the night. You go home, you're like, yeah, I might go to that. And it's on your dresser. Release The Captive (01:10:27.817) yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:10:41.068) And then three days later, you're like, oh shit, I got nothing to do on a Saturday, I'm gonna go to this show. Or you pop a CD in if your vehicle still has a CD player, you know, mine. But that's the thing, right? And let's just, this is how I, I don't know, arrived at my conclusion here is that if you wanna stand out today, like you said, earlier, I can't remember the exact phrase, but you said basically you need to stand out, right? You need to. Release The Captive (01:10:49.629) Right. Release The Captive (01:11:07.605) Yeah. Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:11:08.34) What is Release the Captive doing different that all the other bands aren't doing? And this is one of those things that I think any band can do is to hand out their music. Yeah, I can go stream it, but I have to know who you are first, right? I will never find your music if it's not presented to me in some way. And one of the best ways I think is the physical form. So whether it's a show flyer that you print out at your house and do some real shitty cut job on, I don't care. That may even be a part of the design to make it look as haggard as it possibly can. You're this is a fucking, you're like, hey, this is a fucking shitty looking piece of paper. Oh, look, it's all signed by the band. Okay, what the fuck is this? Oh, release the captive. Oh, what is that? I don't know, put it in the CD player. I don't have a CD player. Well, fucking, grandma, can I get the keys to your car? Yeah, here you go. And all of a sudden you're listening to music you've never heard before, right? Release The Captive (01:11:43.063) Yeah, that is a trend. Release The Captive (01:11:51.721) You Yeah. Release The Captive (01:12:03.651) Yeah, those are those are huge things man. Yeah having tangible physical elements and also just being part of the community Being there just that's all you gotta do and that's a lot of things that a lot of bands don't do is just show up man And there's there's plenty of times where we you know, we go to local shows quite a bit You know, not just our own like you said, it's good to go out there to show support. Hell. Sometimes I just show up to a show under there Yeah, we have and those are RYAN RAYLE (01:12:08.778) Yeah. Yeah, being present. RYAN RAYLE (01:12:24.202) Yeah. I've seen we've run into each other plenty of times and then I'll be like, are you guys playing? Release The Captive (01:12:31.575) Yeah, those are those are great moments, but that's what I'm saying It's that's that part of like the community that I do enjoy about the music especially the scene here in Austin I know there's other cities that people musicians can be so dicks and competitive sometimes I'm like dude you actually the way it works we all work or we don't work at all So it's like it's much better to tag team everything than it is to try to do it all solo because you're never gonna get anywhere dude Having you know, I love you know, all the local acts that we have here. We have great bands here in Austin, you know Chernobyl is secret kilter RYAN RAYLE (01:12:54.72) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:13:01.483) wait, check this out. Release The Captive (01:13:01.65) Yeah. hey, shout out to the boys in trinity. Okay, it's just. RYAN RAYLE (01:13:08.714) Yeah, this is this is okay. I've bought this. This is not me wear being an influencer I just I was at the show and I needed a new hat because their last one that I've basically retired it It's it's actually up here. There's a whole line of hats up here that I've retired just cuz I gotta cover this fucking mop up but But yeah, man, it's it's I like it the upside down glowing orange Chernobyl. It's you know, it's different right? It's it's Release The Captive (01:13:35.947) It's cool. Yeah, and that's the cool thing too. That's what I like about local bands too Especially when they find their own merch and how they can present it in a way that's unique I know we have our own things as well. I guess I could should say is you know, least a capital Hey guys, we have merch y'all are interested. We have RYAN RAYLE (01:13:43.167) Exactly. RYAN RAYLE (01:13:48.32) Yeah. no. Yeah. Yeah. Go ahead. Release The Captive (01:13:50.423) Yeah, no, we actually just ordered new jerseys. We have jerseys now and tank tops. The jerseys are awesome because they're inside out so there's a double layer so you can actually reverse wear it. And the tank top actually is inspired by aliens. It's actually called the Released to Captive Chest Brs. shirt which is super awesome. One of us shouldn't have worn it but whatever. RYAN RAYLE (01:13:55.037) shit, Nice. RYAN RAYLE (01:14:00.743) Okay. RYAN RAYLE (01:14:11.66) I mean, the government has been trying to tell us that aliens are real, even though we've been telling the government that aliens are real. So everyone's seen them. I've held, I've seen some on stage. There's some guys up there that physically cannot do what humans do. I've, so there are aliens here among us. And that's why Austin's weird, right? We've kept it weird. But yeah. Release The Captive (01:14:22.845) yeah. Release The Captive (01:14:31.617) That's why Austin's weird, Well, Ryan, I don't have any more talking points, man. I think we've had a really good conversation. Thank you for roughing it out with us, man, at the beginning. RYAN RAYLE (01:14:37.067) Nah, man. No, I, okay, let's, now that we've arrived at the end, I didn't want my woes to fucking bother you guys, but I broke one of my wife's favorite mirrors. This mirror has been in the house. I actually don't know when she bought it. I don't know where she got it from. It no longer exists. And what happened is, so to make sure that I am dedicated, this is a hard line cat cable that runs from my upstairs Release The Captive (01:14:51.654) RYAN RAYLE (01:15:09.236) studio because when they built my house they did not put hardline hookups in all the rooms they just have the one for the modem and just let wi-fi take over why because it saves the fucking company money and they don't have to put in rj45 jacks which i'm gonna have to do Release The Captive (01:15:24.695) Oh yeah, you don't have to tell me all about that. I mean, I actually, that's funny to bring it up. I'm a telecom worker to tell you the truth. I work for a cable company. I absolutely get it. RYAN RAYLE (01:15:29.42) Oh my God. Okay. Yeah. So yeah, you get it. So, so I have this 75 foot cat seven cable that runs up here in the studio all the way down to the modem. It reaches, but whenever I get done recording, I sometimes forget to roll it up. Right. So then I get the, Ryan, can you get your fucking cable out of the way? And I'm like, all right, you got it. So she was on the way home last night and I was like, fuck the cable. And I unhook it from up here and I start wrapping it and I get just to the stairs because I got a two story and I hear this and it just sounded like an explosion and my so my daughter is downstairs. We have a cat downstairs and then my friend Chris was over and I was like who died and I go downstairs and the mirror is just laying their face up just shattered and I'm like, my God and my buddy Chris, the guy that that started the podcast with me. He knows the relationship between me and my wife and like her, like what's gonna happen. He's like, well brother, call me tomorrow. Yeah. It was, I can't, and I was like, I broke a fucking mirror. my God. What is that? Seven years bad luck? That's the, all right. So as it shattered, I was like, Release The Captive (01:16:34.912) You back with it I'll come back with a bottle later man we'll figure this out Release The Captive (01:16:49.511) It is bad, seven years of bad luck. Unfortunate. Yeah, you'll be fine. RYAN RAYLE (01:16:54.942) I'm dead. And then I just started literally picking up the pieces, vacuuming, doing everything that I could think of that my wife would think of, but I'd never do. So she comes home and she's like, did you think of this and this? No, no, no. So that actually went over pretty well. That one smoothed over pretty well. was like expecting, you know, to show up today with like a black eye or some like more bodily injuries. But fortunately, Release The Captive (01:17:13.239) You Hahaha RYAN RAYLE (01:17:22.252) We can say I just need to get a new piece of glass. The frame is fine. That's all she was really worried about was the frame So that's that you know, that's good and then earlier today trying to settle this up. I would just man and then of all things of all things the reason I couldn't hear you guys is because my fucking laptop was muted and everything is run through the laptop and Then down on the internet side. I was fucking hooked up to the wrong port Release The Captive (01:17:27.316) Okay, RYAN RAYLE (01:17:51.85) That's that was and that's where it all started because and I'm not blaming my wife But if had she not touched the cable in the back of the modem Her mirror would still be alive and we would have been recording at 12 o'clock Just I'm just saying I'm just saying there are coincidences That could lead you to believe anyway Life happens man Release The Captive (01:17:52.245) Ha Yeah. Release The Captive (01:18:05.719) Just saying. Just saying. Release The Captive (01:18:17.749) And life happens. RYAN RAYLE (01:18:20.073) You broke a mirror, so what? It's a fucking mirror. made of glass. It's made of sand. Yeah, frame. Yeah, you know, and that's the important part, right? Like the the the the the structure. The structure is sound. I just got to replace this thing. But man. Well, thank you very much for for sticking around, guys, and working through all this. You've actually given me stuff to kind of go back to the engineers, the whole two mic on one video thing. You know, that's something you've actually proved. Release The Captive (01:18:21.943) Yeah, hey, I'm glad the frames are ready at least that's that's been priest Yeah, exactly the the hardware is intact. You just just got to get the replace the film Release The Captive (01:18:46.389) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:18:49.643) You have a proof of concept going on right now that if Danny's phone could have some type of dual purpose microphone, then I can fit even more people in the same room on the same interview. So thank you very much for helping me on that. Release The Captive (01:19:06.291) Absolutely, man. Thank you so much Ryan for having us man. you have RYAN RAYLE (01:19:08.895) Yeah, dude. yeah. Last thing. Last thing. This is this year's question to the band. Anyone can choose it. I know that everybody has their own different little definition or aspiration, but I'm asking every Texas band, what do you, long term, what does fame look like to release the captive? And I'll give you some context so you can kind of think about it real quick. So the question is, what does fame look like to release the captive? Are we talking if arena sellout is 10, like that's the fucking top of the top, and zero or one is just being a garage band playing at one bar. Where in that lineup does release the captive, what's your take on fame? Release The Captive (01:20:00.759) 10. Call us. off the bat. Call us. Right off the bat. It would be 10. think, what? RYAN RAYLE (01:20:05.483) He's like fucking arenas or nothing RYAN RAYLE (01:20:12.341) But, Release The Captive (01:20:12.407) I would just told the world from me like I was gonna say arena that was my my response right off the bat and then you kept talking and you say arena like fuck that was what I was gonna say bro bro that's my only pain right now this is such a great wonderful band they my only pain is that the thing that we can't control and it does does the eyes on us this band is fucking amazing and and we deserve to be touring with with the biggest names RYAN RAYLE (01:20:19.359) Okay. RYAN RAYLE (01:20:22.975) Hahaha RYAN RAYLE (01:20:41.437) Okay. Release The Captive (01:20:41.569) filling up arenas asap yesterday. I'm glad you feel that way Danny. RYAN RAYLE (01:20:45.801) Hahaha! I fucking love that energy dude. That's, I mean that, but that's it. That's if that's where your heart is at and that's where your head is at. I mean, I think that that helps. That helps. Especially if every, exactly. Yeah. Release The Captive (01:20:59.311) Yeah, it's all a mindset. It's all a mindset. Absolutely. You know, yeah. And honestly, I would say my answer to that question is not so much as fame. It's just success is what you make it, you know? Like I said, we're all working musicians here. We're all working men here. It's difficult, you know, to break away and want to perform music professionally, especially when you need to provide income, right? I need to put a roof over my freaking head. And if you have kids, how am going to feed them? You know, thankfully, none of us have kids, by the way. But anyways, but RYAN RAYLE (01:21:28.011) Hey, They just get in the way. I'm just kidding. I love you, daughter. I'm sorry. Release The Captive (01:21:28.695) I already know that well, sometimes, right? I know. Yeah, but I mean, but but those are things that people don't consider as musicians is like, you know, it's it's hard, especially in this day. You know, you don't it wasn't like, you know, 10, 20 years ago, the music industry has changed, especially we brought it up right at the beginning of our own conversation. COVID, right? It's I think to me, fame is what you make of it. Personally, I'd be happy to just. keep, you I don't mind playing locals. I, my dream, absolutely. I want to play arenas. That's exactly what I would love to do. Where I see on shows now, I hope, you know, today we can make it to, you know, six or seven on that scale you brought up. That would be great. And we're actually getting there. I think, you know, we did, had a great successful show at Empire. It was a great come out for us. Now I want to say that was almost like a debut. We had a lot of people discover. RYAN RAYLE (01:22:08.907) All right. RYAN RAYLE (01:22:17.789) Wait, you guys just played with Forward, right? Or was it at Valhalla? okay, sorry. No, I'm sorry. Forward played Valhalla. You guys, sorry. Yeah, Streams for... Release The Captive (01:22:22.537) Yeah, we did. No, come and take a live. Yeah. Release The Captive (01:22:31.595) That was also a fun show though. but yeah, but seeing our success at places like, yeah, like, like empire and introducing ourselves to crowds that would normally never really listen to the kind of music you play. That was just a mind boggling thing to see you. And it was incredible to see the reaction that we got. And I want to hope for that. I'm hopeful that we can experience more of that. know, a lot of people have been reaching out to us because of how diverse some of our music can be. Some of it can, you know, can shift. It could be really party hardy to really, you know, post email hardcore. And then there's times where it can be real gente. I know we're trying to find our sound and we do. I think we got it now, especially with our current lineup. And I think that that shows really well to people. And. RYAN RAYLE (01:22:54.217) Yeah. RYAN RAYLE (01:23:03.947) You Release The Captive (01:23:13.267) Again, my at the end of the day success family is what you make of it. You know, I would love to live the dream just like anybody else. But at the end of the day as well, I just like to play music. I love being on stage. I like being with my brother, being one of my friends, hanging out with all the cool kids. That's that's all that matters to me, You know. There's nothing wrong that. RYAN RAYLE (01:23:29.579) You're like, I just do it to hang out with all my buddies. That's all. You know, if we go to Europe, OK, but are my friends there? Yes. I think, yeah, I, know, some guys at the end of the day, they'll say fame is, you know, we just want to sell out, you know, small venues, 50 cap every time we go. Like that's success. And like you said, there's success and there's fame. They can be Release The Captive (01:23:39.511) Hey, actually that matters. That's a big thing for me RYAN RAYLE (01:23:59.126) Two things can be true at the same time, right? So I wish, we'll just, know, my goal is to help Texas bands become Texas famous. That's kind of where I'm at. So now we've got the platform over, you know, a decade running, still going. I still got gas in the tank. And then we've got the new Texas takeover. So we got the hour long radio show on no control radio. Shameless plug, Sunday's eight o'clock central standard time where I get to curate nothing but local music from guys like this making songs for people like you. And the rules are it's just anything Texas related to adjacent to I always try to throw some fun one in there like your uncle from El Paso that ripped one that ripped a set in the 90s on a demo and on a on a tape somewhere like give me that tape. I'll digitize it. We'll play it. And then obviously we play all the big names Kubla Khan, InventAnimate, The Sword, know, Pantera. Fucking I found out Drowning Pools from Dallas. I didn't know that. So. Release The Captive (01:24:37.813) Hahaha! Release The Captive (01:24:47.521) Hell yeah. Release The Captive (01:24:55.647) Yeah, I have no genitals for conocidines. RYAN RAYLE (01:24:58.443) Get to play their music too. But again, you know the Texas Takeover in my opinion is is is for the You know the locals and yeah, I'll pepper in some stuff I mean I'm staring at a life cycles fucking vinyl that I just bought and they they're on tour with Sylosis and bleed from within and God gag GAG great American ghost so Being able to see locals. mean seeing locals tour with international acts and International acts coming to us with our guys on their tour like that's so fucking cool, man and You know being able to be a part of that is is neat So if I can help in any way that I can I'm definitely going to you know Give it my all and try to give you guys as much exposure as I can so Release The Captive (01:25:37.696) It is. RYAN RAYLE (01:25:50.732) Speaking of exposure, we'll round out the show with let everybody know how they can get a hold of you and support you. So if you've got like a website, a merch site, all the ads on the Instagrams and shit. We do have a I don't know. There may be little rascals. RYAN RAYLE (01:26:13.865) Whatever these two do earn the... They're just like... I'm having a hard... For those listening, you just have to go over and watch it on YouTube because it's whole thing. man. Release The Captive (01:26:26.101) Yeah, also when it comes to merchandise, we also have parcels So if anybody is from out of town wants to order any merchandise, let us know we'll mail it for you No, shipping costs. So that we do have an email for a website for that if you go through band camp slash release the captive Then yeah RYAN RAYLE (01:26:36.043) Whoop. Hey, there we go. RYAN RAYLE (01:26:43.519) Gotcha. So Bandcamp's where the merch is at? Got it. Okay. Love me some Bandcamp. Love me some Bandcamp. All right. Percussion section. You guys got anything? Any final shout outs? Any thank yous? Yeah. I just, you know what? We'll just do some garage hangs. I'll bring a 12 pack over. Tell your neighbors to fuck off for two hours or just invite them. Just throw a block party, right? Hey, I will fully fund, not fund, we'll fully support that with some fun. So, hey man, put it out there. Release The Captive (01:27:23.893) Yeah, hell no. So please check that out. It's going to be dope. RYAN RAYLE (01:27:38.741) Danny, what you got, RYAN RAYLE (01:28:00.064) Yeah, definitely let him do all of your marketing. 100%. Release The Captive (01:28:03.191) Yeah, that makes so much more sense. It's got so much energy. It's Craig List certified. RYAN RAYLE (01:28:08.149) Just like he like, all right. Yeah, exactly. I was just over here thinking like how I like, like, yeah, Craig's are certified, you know what mean? Cause like, Hey, Carlos, I obviously see you there throwing up gang signs. just that next time, Craigslist certified. Release The Captive (01:28:14.768) Hahaha RYAN RAYLE (01:28:24.843) See RYAN RAYLE (01:28:28.395) I love it. I love it. Well guys, thank you.
