- 1:22Speaker 8: Welcome back to.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Chip Howard's Sports Talk here on and all Willie Wednesday,
- 1:26Speaker 1: as we get ready to speak with Tory Valdez and
- 1:33Speaker 1: we are going to go out to the phone lines
- 1:35Speaker 1: with Tory.
- 1:35Speaker 9: Tory, how are you doing today?
- 1:38Speaker 4: I'm so good. Thank you guys for having me.
- 1:40Speaker 9: Oh, it's great to have you on.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Before we start talking about you getting to play at
- 1:46Speaker 1: David Diamond and you know how fun that will be
- 1:52Speaker 1: for a former Aggie All American to come back and
- 1:54Speaker 1: play in this tournament. What did you think of the
- 1:57Speaker 1: first inning of the Spark game the other day. No,
- 2:00Speaker 1: oh my gosh, what was that like for you and
- 2:03Speaker 1: your team, knowing that the Sparks had to lose for
- 2:05Speaker 1: y'all to advance, and it just kept It was like
- 2:09Speaker 1: they started going downhill for them, and it was like
- 2:12Speaker 1: so so much fun for y'all.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Yeah, we actually watched the game as a team and
- 2:19Speaker 4: we went to like a little sports bar there in
- 2:20Speaker 4: Portland that's really close to the field and we just
- 2:24Speaker 4: watched together. You know, we were wearing our pink. We
- 2:26Speaker 4: were cheering really hard for the Blaze. And in this league,
- 2:29Speaker 4: it's so funny because we all have played against each other,
- 2:31Speaker 4: played with one another the format before the AUSL was established.
- 2:35Speaker 4: We were all on rotating teams, so like we have
- 2:38Speaker 4: really good relationships with everyone, but we're like Blaze today,
- 2:42Speaker 4: we're your biggest fans, Like, we need you to win
- 2:44Speaker 4: this game. So for us, once they started to pull away,
- 2:47Speaker 4: we were cheering for every strike, every foul ball that
- 2:49Speaker 4: was hit. Everything, We're celebrating those little wins. And then
- 2:52Speaker 4: it was just like the Blaze, everything was falling their way.
- 2:55Speaker 4: So it worked out perfectly for us, especially not holding
- 2:59Speaker 4: our own state in our head anymore so, knowing that
- 3:02Speaker 4: they came a big time for us. We expected them
- 3:06Speaker 4: to pull at least one. It's hard to be the
- 3:08Speaker 4: team three times in this league. But yeah, after they
- 3:11Speaker 4: won the game, we all celebrated together and really just
- 3:14Speaker 4: trying to soak up these last few days that we
- 3:16Speaker 4: have together as a team.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Talk about the new format and getting to six teams
- 3:23Speaker 1: and being permanent teams. I mean, I know the pool,
- 3:26Speaker 1: there were some players that have moved around that have
- 3:28Speaker 1: been in the pool when teams have needed players. But
- 3:32Speaker 1: how much different is it to now be like, this
- 3:37Speaker 1: is my team this year, and you know, is it
- 3:40Speaker 1: a big change from previously or was it because there's
- 3:46Speaker 1: so many players that have kind of had influx into
- 3:49Speaker 1: this and this is their first year and it just
- 3:52Speaker 1: seems like softball to them.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I think last year, the inaugural season, was
- 3:59Speaker 4: a little different because we didn't have home bases. We
- 4:01Speaker 4: were just traveling around, so it's a lot more on
- 4:04Speaker 4: the road. Things didn't feel as established, which of course
- 4:08Speaker 4: is the first time. Like what we were able to
- 4:10Speaker 4: accomplish was incredible, But now seeing from last year to
- 4:14Speaker 4: this year having home bases, being able to create a
- 4:17Speaker 4: home atmosphere with your own fans, and really the buy
- 4:21Speaker 4: in from the communities around like Portland for us has
- 4:24Speaker 4: been quite literally the most insane fan base I've ever
- 4:28Speaker 4: seen for women's sports in general, not just softball, but
- 4:32Speaker 4: they've got also the Portland Fire basketball WNBA team. They
- 4:36Speaker 4: also have the Thorns for the soccer league. So it's
- 4:40Speaker 4: been really really cool to see how the fans show
- 4:43Speaker 4: up and how much this was wanted from the outside
- 4:46Speaker 4: and from a player's perspective, like we got a chance
- 4:49Speaker 4: to play our last three series at home, or no
- 4:52Speaker 4: excuse me, it was actually I think four series at home,
- 4:54Speaker 4: so we got to post up in Portland and really
- 4:57Speaker 4: make ourselves at home and really find a routine. So
- 5:00Speaker 4: I think it definitely helps in that aspect of getting
- 5:02Speaker 4: your feet settled and getting back into a routine, and
- 5:05Speaker 4: while you are playing softball, it helps to have those
- 5:08Speaker 4: those outside factors all kind of line up for you.
- 5:11Speaker 4: So we've enjoyed having home bases this season, and the
- 5:13Speaker 4: fans that have shown up have been great.
- 5:15Speaker 1: In this And i' mean I spent a lot of
- 5:18Speaker 1: time watching this. You know, my daughter's a college softball
- 5:21Speaker 1: player up at Bryant. I love the Little League commercials.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I love everything that the opportunities that y'all show that
- 5:32Speaker 1: previously professional softball really wasn't the target for a lot
- 5:37Speaker 1: of people to play it in the United States. You
- 5:40Speaker 1: could go outside this country and women's basketball was like
- 5:43Speaker 1: this twenty years ago, and then they got the WNBA.
- 5:46Speaker 9: It seems like this.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Is a serious attempt to make sure that professional softball
- 5:54Speaker 1: has not just a toe hold but an opportunity to
- 5:57Speaker 1: for growth.
- 5:58Speaker 9: And you're on the ground floor.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Of that absolutely, And the cool thing is like being
- 6:04Speaker 4: a part of this is my ninth year professionally, so
- 6:06Speaker 4: it's been cool to be a part of that growth.
- 6:09Speaker 4: And I think the biggest differences you see is it
- 6:11Speaker 4: was never whether people wanted to watch sopball or not.
- 6:15Speaker 4: They've always wanted it, they just didn't know where to
- 6:17Speaker 4: find it. So having the exposure with ESPN AUSL bringing
- 6:22Speaker 4: Kim Ang on to be the commissioner and really behind
- 6:25Speaker 4: the scenes, to me is what sets apart the AOSL
- 6:28Speaker 4: from previous leagues that have tried to start. The money
- 6:32Speaker 4: that's involved, the TV deals that are involved the business
- 6:35Speaker 4: side of it, getting the content, like making sure that
- 6:39Speaker 4: we're seen as softball players of course, but also behind
- 6:43Speaker 4: the scenes, like what are we doing outside the season,
- 6:46Speaker 4: who are we like, how do we show up, what's
- 6:48Speaker 4: our personality like? Because that's truly what fans want to
- 6:51Speaker 4: see and connect with. And so I think when you
- 6:54Speaker 4: talk about where this league can go, the limit is
- 6:58Speaker 4: truly endless. Now you're seeing play young players say I
- 7:02Speaker 4: want to be in the AUSL and to me, that's
- 7:04Speaker 4: like music to my ears because we've put so much
- 7:06Speaker 4: work in almost the last decade of my life, I know,
- 7:10Speaker 4: long before that, into growing the sport and hoping that
- 7:15Speaker 4: the young athletes that come after us are going to
- 7:17Speaker 4: do the exact same and get more and more for
- 7:20Speaker 4: our sport because that's what we deserve.
- 7:22Speaker 9: Lots of Aggie tize on your team as well. How
- 7:24Speaker 9: fun has this been?
- 7:26Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, it's been so fun. I've really been
- 7:29Speaker 4: like one of the few Aggies professionally for a little while,
- 7:33Speaker 4: so I haven't had the opportunity to play with any
- 7:36Speaker 4: former teammates. I've got to play with Riley Startin a
- 7:39Speaker 4: couple of years ago in the AU and then Ashley
- 7:42Speaker 4: Walters was a pro for a little bit, so in
- 7:45Speaker 4: my early seasons I got to play with a few people,
- 7:48Speaker 4: but I haven't been able to run into any of
- 7:50Speaker 4: the younger aggies. So now it feels kind of full
- 7:53Speaker 4: circle having kp on our team who just graduated, myself
- 7:57Speaker 4: being class of eighteen, and then Jamie low Price also
- 8:00Speaker 4: our GM class of eight So it's been nice not
- 8:04Speaker 4: just having aggies, but aggies that have spanned generations because
- 8:07Speaker 4: we've actually been able to compare stories and talk about
- 8:10Speaker 4: things in college station that have changed, and so many
- 8:13Speaker 4: things that have come up and been the same or
- 8:15Speaker 4: different throughout our years, and just having someone there that
- 8:18Speaker 4: understands the college experience that you lived, or you know,
- 8:22Speaker 4: the core values that you hold close to your heart.
- 8:25Speaker 4: It's going to be a little bit different for everybody,
- 8:27Speaker 4: but it's just a sense of understanding with one another,
- 8:29Speaker 4: and I've loved every part of it.
- 8:31Speaker 1: How exciting you are you to get to play at
- 8:33Speaker 1: David Steimon again, I mean, y'all had to watch that
- 8:36Speaker 1: get built. They got it done for that twenty eighteen season,
- 8:40Speaker 1: but I mean it was kind of like something you
- 8:42Speaker 1: could see and touch, but y'all didn't even know if
- 8:44Speaker 1: y'all were gonna get on the field in that last year,
- 8:47Speaker 1: your senior year.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I so whenever I committed, the whole stick was
- 8:55Speaker 4: that it would be done by my sophomore or junior year,
- 8:58Speaker 4: And so I got to school sophomore year, we met
- 9:04Speaker 4: Becky and Monty Davis and then we started to like
- 9:09Speaker 4: hang out with them, get to know them. They were
- 9:11Speaker 4: trying to get to know us. And the first thing
- 9:15Speaker 4: that I saw of Davis Diamond was of course, like
- 9:17Speaker 4: the blueprint, all the blue lines on the white paper.
- 9:21Speaker 4: And then eventually we got to move to a VR
- 9:24Speaker 4: headset where I stood in the middle of where Davis
- 9:27Speaker 4: Diamond is right now, put on the headset and or
- 9:32Speaker 4: I guess the eyeset, whatever you call it, and then
- 9:35Speaker 4: looked around at what was going to be Davis Diamond
- 9:38Speaker 4: and I was just so in awe And so then
- 9:40Speaker 4: getting to see it from VR to fully standing playing
- 9:45Speaker 4: on the field, it's been magical. And I think I
- 9:50Speaker 4: only got six games in Davis Diamond and it was
- 9:54Speaker 4: just the concourse and the field that was done. So
- 9:57Speaker 4: it was no locker rooms, no training room, no anything extra,
- 10:01Speaker 4: and we still had to walk over from Old Aggie.
- 10:03Speaker 4: So it's going to be I think an incredible experience.
- 10:08Speaker 4: To look back on. Definitely going to feel a little
- 10:10Speaker 4: bit nostalgic because I'm going to be back for the
- 10:13Speaker 4: first time in nine years. But also it's an opportunity
- 10:18Speaker 4: for me to be comfortable in my environment and almost
- 10:22Speaker 4: have those nostalgic moments play out the way I want
- 10:25Speaker 4: them to play out, like getting back to that college
- 10:27Speaker 4: tory mindset and of who I was when I competed
- 10:31Speaker 4: here and merging that with who I am now and
- 10:34Speaker 4: how I compete now. I'm really looking forward to Stephan
- 10:37Speaker 4: back out on the field in front of the twelve
- 10:38Speaker 4: man and.
- 10:38Speaker 9: You want three games?
- 10:39Speaker 1: You want to play half as many games this week
- 10:41Speaker 1: as you did then, don't.
- 10:42Speaker 4: You That's true? Yeah, three for sure, or if we
- 10:46Speaker 4: need it. But I'd love to get three wins while
- 10:48Speaker 4: we're here.
- 10:49Speaker 9: Tell us about the band it's a little bit.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Uh yeah, the Bandits. They've got a really good quick lineup,
- 10:57Speaker 4: play a lot of small ball, got some really goods
- 11:00Speaker 4: that have kept a lot of the league. I want
- 11:03Speaker 4: to say down because we've won just as many games
- 11:07Speaker 4: as a lot of the other teams in this place.
- 11:09Speaker 4: But we're all four and one. It's like one big
- 11:12Speaker 4: triangle us the Talons and the Cascade have all been
- 11:15Speaker 4: four and one against one of those opponents. So pretty
- 11:18Speaker 4: even team, but very different put together teams. So the
- 11:23Speaker 4: Bandits are definitely I would say the speedier of the three.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And Mac Barber playing in the outfield, that'll be a
- 11:29Speaker 1: change for Aggie fans to see her play in right field.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what they say, when you hit, you
- 11:34Speaker 4: don't sit, so anywhere they can find a place for
- 11:37Speaker 4: her bat. They'll put her anywhere they need to on
- 11:39Speaker 4: defense to help them get a couple more runs across
- 11:42Speaker 4: the board.
- 11:43Speaker 9: Toy, We appreciate it.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I'll be out there tomorrow night, the families coming out
- 11:47Speaker 1: to watch.
- 11:48Speaker 9: I know that those games.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Are sold out for the championship game. It just speaks
- 11:52Speaker 1: to the excitement level of professional softball. And it's wonderful
- 11:56Speaker 1: to have you represent Texas A and M in it.
- 11:59Speaker 4: And best of luck, thank you so much. Look forward
- 12:02Speaker 4: to seeing you guys at the field for a Cascade win.
- 12:05Speaker 9: All Right.
- 12:05Speaker 1: That's Tory Vedallas as the former Aggie All American and broadcaster.
- 12:12Speaker 1: She knows her way all around the stadium because she
- 12:14Speaker 1: broadcasts games there all the time. But it's kind of
- 12:16Speaker 1: great to see her back on the field. Okay, let's
- 12:19Speaker 1: change gears now, and we're gonna hear the first part
- 12:23Speaker 1: of coach Elko as he was met the media today.
- 12:28Speaker 1: We're gonna hear the big room here, and then we
- 12:30Speaker 1: will also hear when he takes his question and answers.
- 12:34Speaker 1: We'll get to that.
- 12:35Speaker 9: We'll hear both of it.
- 12:36Speaker 1: But first let's hear Mike Elko as he gets ready
- 12:41Speaker 1: to meet the press here today at SEC media Days.
- 12:45Speaker 5: How are you doing?
- 12:46Speaker 10: Excited to be back here for my third season at
- 12:49Speaker 10: SEC media Day. It's crazy how quickly you go from
- 12:53Speaker 10: being in your first year as the rookie to being
- 12:56Speaker 10: in your third year as one of the more seasoned
- 12:59Speaker 10: veterans in the conference. I guess that's the process of
- 13:01Speaker 10: being in the SEC. I want to follow up a
- 13:04Speaker 10: little bit on what Greg said about the family. Had
- 13:07Speaker 10: a really big summer this summer with my family. I
- 13:09Speaker 10: earned a lot of brownie points last year by starting
- 13:12Speaker 10: this press conference by giving a shout out to my wife, Michelle,
- 13:15Speaker 10: and so I'm going to do the same again this year.
- 13:18Speaker 10: I appreciate everything that she does, all the support that
- 13:21Speaker 10: she gives not only to me, but to our program.
- 13:23Speaker 10: To allow us to do the things to be very successful.
- 13:27Speaker 10: I said, last year, we had a really bad summer,
- 13:30Speaker 10: spent the whole summer moving, and so owed her a vacation,
- 13:33Speaker 10: and so I was actually able to deliver that for her.
- 13:36Speaker 10: We actually did one of our first adult vacations, going
- 13:38Speaker 10: over to Europe and touring across the Mediterranean, so that
- 13:42Speaker 10: was really really exciting. I'm glad Greg cleaned up the
- 13:46Speaker 10: idea that my daughter does not play football. She actually
- 13:48Speaker 10: cheerleads for football. So I want to make sure I
- 13:51Speaker 10: put that out there too, so that she hears that
- 13:53Speaker 10: clearly from me. Hopefully all of that leads to some karma.
- 13:58Speaker 10: You know, we spoke a lot about family life last
- 14:00Speaker 10: year at this press conference, and we're able to go
- 14:02Speaker 10: out and have a pretty good year. Want to be
- 14:04Speaker 10: able to go do the same. We've got some big
- 14:06Speaker 10: milestones next summer. I'll be turning fifty, we'll be celebrating
- 14:10Speaker 10: our twenty fifth anniversary, and our last child.
- 14:13Speaker 5: Will be going off to college.
- 14:14Speaker 10: And so success this year, while always important in college station,
- 14:17Speaker 10: is probably more important than ever because success during the
- 14:21Speaker 10: fall leads to a very happy offseason. It's really cool
- 14:24Speaker 10: to be here in Tampa. This is a place that's
- 14:27Speaker 10: really special to me over the years. I kind of
- 14:30Speaker 10: cut my teeth back in the early two thousands recruiting
- 14:33Speaker 10: the I four corridor from Orlando over to Tampa, and
- 14:36Speaker 10: so it's an area I'm very familiar with.
- 14:38Speaker 5: I have a lot of family over on the.
- 14:40Speaker 10: East coast of Florida, stretching from Jacksonville down to Daytona Beach,
- 14:44Speaker 10: and four years ago my mom and dad relocated over
- 14:47Speaker 10: into the Daytona Beach area, and so I've spent a
- 14:49Speaker 10: lot of time down in Florida.
- 14:50Speaker 5: It's exciting to be here.
- 14:52Speaker 10: It's a really exciting time to be part of the
- 14:54Speaker 10: Texas A and M community, both.
- 14:56Speaker 5: On and off the field.
- 14:58Speaker 10: I want to start my mentioning our new president, doctor
- 15:01Speaker 10: Susan Ballabina. Doctor Ballabino was elected president in May. Really
- 15:06Speaker 10: excited to partner with her as we move forward into
- 15:09Speaker 10: this next era of Texas A and M University. I
- 15:12Speaker 10: think she'll do a phenomenal job providing leadership not only
- 15:16Speaker 10: to our athletics department, but also to our university as
- 15:19Speaker 10: a whole. As we continue to grow the brand of
- 15:21Speaker 10: Texas A and M and continue to grow our reach
- 15:24Speaker 10: across this great country. We are celebrating as a university
- 15:29Speaker 10: our one hundred and fiftieth anniversary this year. That celebration
- 15:33Speaker 10: kicks off this fall when the student arrives. One of
- 15:36Speaker 10: the big events will be our home game this year
- 15:38Speaker 10: against Arkansas, and so we're excited to partner with our
- 15:41Speaker 10: university to help celebrate one hundred and fifty years of
- 15:44Speaker 10: greatness at Texas A and m Our athletic department, under
- 15:47Speaker 10: the strong leadership of Athletic Director trelv Albertz, just completed
- 15:51Speaker 10: one of its most successful seasons in our history. Want
- 15:54Speaker 10: to give a special shout out to our women's volleyball
- 15:57Speaker 10: coach Jamie Morrison. Our women's volleyball team captured their first
- 16:01Speaker 10: national championship ever this year. That was a great journey
- 16:04Speaker 10: to follow and watch, a story of tremendous great and toughness.
- 16:08Speaker 10: Also want to give a shout out to women's tennis
- 16:10Speaker 10: coach Mark Weaver, whose team won their second national championship
- 16:14Speaker 10: in the last three seasons, again going on the road
- 16:17Speaker 10: into Athens and winning in a very hostile environment to
- 16:20Speaker 10: bring home a national championship. I love the culture that
- 16:23Speaker 10: we have amongst our head coaches at Texas, A and M.
- 16:26Speaker 10: I think that's still something that makes college athletics very special,
- 16:30Speaker 10: is the community culture that you're able to share and
- 16:33Speaker 10: sharing the common experiences and success within your campus, and
- 16:37Speaker 10: so exciting that they.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Root for us, Exciting to get out and root.
- 16:40Speaker 10: For them, Exciting anytime we get an opportunity to celebrate
- 16:43Speaker 10: Aggie's success in the athletic scope. Also want to acknowledge
- 16:47Speaker 10: Commissioner Greg Sank.
- 16:49Speaker 5: I think he.
- 16:50Speaker 10: Takes a lot of hits here as the commissioner of
- 16:53Speaker 10: our conference. I think he has kind of become the
- 16:55Speaker 10: forefront for college football in a lot of ways, and
- 17:00Speaker 10: sometimes everything that's wrong with college football gets pointed at him.
- 17:03Speaker 10: But I think he has done a phenomenal job of
- 17:06Speaker 10: leading this conference through an era of historic change. I
- 17:10Speaker 10: think we are going through an era where the pace
- 17:13Speaker 10: of change is unbelievably rapid. The amount of change and
- 17:17Speaker 10: how the game is changing is really unlike any other
- 17:21Speaker 10: time in our history.
- 17:22Speaker 5: And I think the.
- 17:23Speaker 10: Leadership that he shows, the information that he's been able
- 17:26Speaker 10: to provide us as coaches and athletic departments to stay
- 17:29Speaker 10: on the front end of that change has really really
- 17:33Speaker 10: been helpful and impactful as our conference continues to have
- 17:36Speaker 10: a lot of success. As we start to turn our
- 17:40Speaker 10: attention to football, I want to talk about the three
- 17:42Speaker 10: players that we brought here with us today. Want to
- 17:45Speaker 10: start with quarterback Marcel Reid Marcel Hills from Nashville, Tennessee.
- 17:50Speaker 10: He returns as our starting quarterback. It's his fourth year
- 17:53Speaker 10: in the program at Texas A and M really excited
- 17:56Speaker 10: for his growth. I think what you saw last year
- 17:59Speaker 10: was him really start to scratch the surface of what
- 18:01Speaker 10: he's capable of as a starting quarterback. Been really proud
- 18:05Speaker 10: of how he's handled this offseason. I think he's remained
- 18:07Speaker 10: extremely humble. I think his work ethic has been phenomenal.
- 18:11Speaker 10: I think he has put a lot of time in
- 18:13Speaker 10: to become the quarterback that he's capable of becoming. And
- 18:16Speaker 10: I'm really excited for what he's going to do this
- 18:19Speaker 10: fall on the field. I also think he does a
- 18:21Speaker 10: phenomenal job representing our university, his role in the Brian
- 18:25Speaker 10: College Station community, what he's done from a community service
- 18:29Speaker 10: effort standpoint. Just recently, he hosted a football camp for
- 18:34Speaker 10: youth in the Brian College Station area that had between
- 18:37Speaker 10: six hundred and seven hundred kids at it really excited
- 18:40Speaker 10: that we were able to bring him here. He was
- 18:42Speaker 10: our leading vote getter as a captain, and we like
- 18:45Speaker 10: the way he has stepped into that leadership role for
- 18:48Speaker 10: this team as we head into the fall. Linebacker Damian
- 18:52Speaker 10: Sanford another one of our captains. He was our second
- 18:55Speaker 10: leading vote getter. Damian's a kid who I have a
- 18:58Speaker 10: ton of history with. Actually reminded him this on the
- 19:01Speaker 10: plane coming over here today. He didn't remember this, but
- 19:04Speaker 10: as a junior his team captured a Texas five A
- 19:07Speaker 10: high school state title. They actually did it against College
- 19:11Speaker 10: College Station High School, which is where both of my
- 19:13Speaker 10: boys were attending at the time, and so they went
- 19:16Speaker 10: out and they beat College Station for the state title.
- 19:18Speaker 10: We offered him at Duke shortly after I got the
- 19:21Speaker 10: head coaching job there. Actually convinced him to silently commit
- 19:24Speaker 10: to us at Duke before really bursting on the scene
- 19:28Speaker 10: that spring of his junior year and ultimately settling on
- 19:31Speaker 10: an opportunity to go to Texas A and M. He
- 19:34Speaker 10: blossomed into one of the best linebackers that I've been
- 19:37Speaker 10: able to coach at Texas A and M. Extremely explosive,
- 19:40Speaker 10: dynamic blitzer really made an impact on games when he
- 19:44Speaker 10: became a full time starter for US last year, and
- 19:47Speaker 10: really really looking forward to what he can do this year.
- 19:50Speaker 10: But I think the story that best sums up what
- 19:52Speaker 10: kind of kid he is is this. Many of you
- 19:55Speaker 10: are aware that he had a pretty bad injury during
- 19:58Speaker 10: the spring game. He required surgery, committed to getting back
- 20:03Speaker 10: as quick as he can. The game was on Saturday,
- 20:05Speaker 10: he had surgery on Monday. He got released from the
- 20:08Speaker 10: hospital on Tuesday, And when I walked into our end
- 20:11Speaker 10: of semester meeting Wednesday morning at ten am, he was
- 20:14Speaker 10: sitting in a front row seat. And that was not
- 20:17Speaker 10: because we asked him to be there, that was of
- 20:19Speaker 10: his own accord.
- 20:20Speaker 5: And so I just think he's.
- 20:21Speaker 10: A tremendous character kid, a tremendous leader. He will get
- 20:25Speaker 10: back healthy this year and really go out and blossom
- 20:28Speaker 10: on the field. The third player that we brought with
- 20:31Speaker 10: us is safety Marcus Ratcliffe Marcus Hiles from San Diego, California.
- 20:35Speaker 10: Marcus was one of the first kids who committed to
- 20:37Speaker 10: US out of the transfer portal when I got hired
- 20:39Speaker 10: at Texas A and M and so it feels as
- 20:41Speaker 10: though he's kind of been with us from day one.
- 20:44Speaker 10: He's played an integral part in helping build our culture.
- 20:47Speaker 10: He's a tremendous leader, he's a tremendous character kid. He's
- 20:50Speaker 10: really become one of the better safeties in the conference.
- 20:54Speaker 5: We're excited to see what he's able to do out
- 20:56Speaker 5: here this year.
- 20:56Speaker 10: In the fall story on him behind the scenes, he's
- 21:00Speaker 10: put together one of the most thoughtful charity initiatives I've
- 21:04Speaker 10: ever witnessed as a college football player. He created the
- 21:07Speaker 10: Mission three to twelve program three for his jersey number
- 21:11Speaker 10: twelve for the twelfth Man. It's a mission that helps
- 21:14Speaker 10: give money to World War Two veterans, and so his
- 21:18Speaker 10: organization donates three hundred and twelve dollars for every turnover
- 21:22Speaker 10: that we cause on defense at Texas A and M.
- 21:25Speaker 10: May have raised over thirty thousand dollars for army vets
- 21:28Speaker 10: for World War Two. And so just a really, really
- 21:31Speaker 10: cool kid who's really done some amazing things with his
- 21:34Speaker 10: platform and his opportunity to represent Texas A and M.
- 21:38Speaker 5: As we turn our chapter.
- 21:39Speaker 10: Away towards the twenty twenty six football season, I think
- 21:42Speaker 10: it's important to look back on some of the highlights
- 21:45Speaker 10: from twenty twenty five. Greg mentioned some of these, but
- 21:48Speaker 10: just want to put him into a capsule. Eleven wins
- 21:51Speaker 10: on the field for the first time in a really
- 21:53Speaker 10: long time for our program, first playoff appearance ever, led
- 21:57Speaker 10: the NCAA with thirteen players represented at the end of
- 22:00Speaker 10: felt combine, led the SEC with ten players drafted. Those
- 22:03Speaker 10: are the markers of success that we want our program
- 22:06Speaker 10: to become known for year in and year out. We've
- 22:09Speaker 10: talked an awful lot about at Texas A and M
- 22:12Speaker 10: becoming a program that people talk about the success that
- 22:15Speaker 10: we have on and off the field, not what we're
- 22:18Speaker 10: capable of being, and I think those are the markers
- 22:21Speaker 10: year in and year out that we need to be
- 22:23Speaker 10: able to compete to complete in order for us to
- 22:26Speaker 10: continue on this journey to success. I'm also equally proud
- 22:30Speaker 10: of some of the things that we accomplish off the field.
- 22:33Speaker 10: Three point oh seven yearly GPA, the highest we've had
- 22:36Speaker 10: in Texas A and M football history. Sixty nine student athletes,
- 22:40Speaker 10: including fifty eight of our eighty five scholarships over a
- 22:43Speaker 10: three point zero in the spring, over five hundred hours.
- 22:46Speaker 10: Like Greg said, of community service, but that was made
- 22:49Speaker 10: by ninety percent of our roster participating in some type
- 22:53Speaker 10: of charitable work, and so we are continuing on our
- 22:56Speaker 10: mission of developing not just elite football players, but elite
- 23:00Speaker 10: men who are going to be ready for the world
- 23:03Speaker 10: that comes at them.
- 23:04Speaker 5: When football is over.
- 23:06Speaker 10: Also want to take an opportunity to thank the twelfth
- 23:08Speaker 10: man for their continued support. As Greg pointed out in
- 23:12Speaker 10: his opening presser, the SEC averaged eighty thousand people at
- 23:15Speaker 10: their home games last year at Texas A and M.
- 23:18Speaker 10: We said an attendance record, averaging one hundred and six
- 23:21Speaker 10: thousand people at our home games. That's one hundred and
- 23:24Speaker 10: three percent capacity in our stadium on average.
- 23:28Speaker 5: And so they continue to find ways.
- 23:30Speaker 10: To come out and support this program at unbelievable levels
- 23:34Speaker 10: and forever thankful and grateful for the support that we
- 23:37Speaker 10: have in college station at Texas A and M. As
- 23:40Speaker 10: we move into this season, we're excited for year three.
- 23:43Speaker 10: We're excited with the roster that we've put together. We're
- 23:46Speaker 10: excited with the competition that we're going to have. As
- 23:48Speaker 10: we head into fall camp, we know we've got a
- 23:51Speaker 10: challenging schedule. Everybody in this league does. As we've added
- 23:54Speaker 10: the ninth game we're playing five on the road. That's
- 23:57Speaker 10: going to make for big challenges, but those are challenges
- 23:59Speaker 10: a program that we're ready to meet head on. We're
- 24:02Speaker 10: excited for the opportunity to go out and compete, to
- 24:05Speaker 10: finish at a better clip than we have the last
- 24:07Speaker 10: two years, and to start bringing trophy and hardware to
- 24:10Speaker 10: College station. And so we're excited for what's ahead. We're
- 24:13Speaker 10: excited for the challenges. Thanks for all that you do
- 24:16Speaker 10: covering the sport. Thanks and gigam.

- 28:32Speaker 1: As we are listening to Mike Elko at SEC Media Days,
- 28:38Speaker 1: we heard his opening statement in the last segment. Now
- 28:41Speaker 1: let's hear the Q and A from the big room
- 28:44Speaker 1: here in Tampa at SEC Media Day's twenty twenty six.
- 28:49Speaker 18: Jerevery THIRDEO dot Com coach Mario Craver, he kind of
- 28:53Speaker 18: exploded on the scene.
- 28:55Speaker 15: Was kind of his ceiling like in his offense this year.
- 28:58Speaker 10: Yeah, I think it's really high. I think he's one
- 29:00Speaker 10: of the more explosive, dynamic slot receivers I've been able
- 29:03Speaker 10: to be around. I think he does a really really
- 29:05Speaker 10: good job of creating separation. He plays bigger than his size.
- 29:10Speaker 10: I think he's going to have a really really big
- 29:12Speaker 10: year for us if he can find a way to
- 29:14Speaker 10: stay healthy and be consistent week in and week out as.
- 29:17Speaker 5: We go through this season.
- 29:19Speaker 8: Okay, we'll go straight here on this other side of
- 29:22Speaker 8: the island, just right across heyk.
- 29:23Speaker 9: Goos Trams Brown KBTX.
- 29:25Speaker 18: You mentioned earlier how it's the first time y'all have
- 29:27Speaker 18: had a quarterback coach that wasn't the coordinator. What are
- 29:30Speaker 18: some of the advantages with that and what is Joey
- 29:33Speaker 18: Lynch brought so far?
- 29:34Speaker 10: Yeah, I think the biggest advantage is is you have
- 29:37Speaker 10: a guy in that building who spends every minute of
- 29:39Speaker 10: every day worried about developing our quarterbacks. And that's certainly
- 29:42Speaker 10: no disrespect to coach Klent. Colin did a phenomenal job.
- 29:46Speaker 10: But when you're the offensive coordinator as well, you've got
- 29:48Speaker 10: a lot of other things to worry about. You got
- 29:50Speaker 10: practice planning, you've got scripting, you got making sure the
- 29:53Speaker 10: meeting's run right.
- 29:54Speaker 5: You got to focus on the run game. When you
- 29:56Speaker 5: have a full.
- 29:57Speaker 10: Time quarterback coach like we do now with coach Lynch,
- 30:00Speaker 10: his sole priority every day is to create a plan
- 30:03Speaker 10: not only from oursell but for each of our quarterbacks
- 30:06Speaker 10: to grow and develop every single day. And so I
- 30:08Speaker 10: think he's done a phenomenal job of putting a plan together.
- 30:12Speaker 10: And then I think each of our quarterbacks has done
- 30:14Speaker 10: a really good job of putting in the extra work
- 30:16Speaker 10: to come in and execute that plan. And so I
- 30:19Speaker 10: just think the dedicated time to the position enhances the
- 30:23Speaker 10: ability for a little bit more detailed growth in that room.
- 30:27Speaker 8: Hey, we'll go in the section in front of me
- 30:29Speaker 8: about midway back.
- 30:30Speaker 19: Tony Katalina twenty four to seven Sports coach. Obviously you
- 30:32Speaker 19: talked about Mario Kraver, but you guys brought in Isaiah
- 30:35Speaker 19: Horton from Alabama six to four.
- 30:37Speaker 8: Guy Premium X receiver.
- 30:40Speaker 19: Marcel was really excited about his addition. Can you just
- 30:42Speaker 19: talk about what the priority was to get him on
- 30:45Speaker 19: this program and just what he can do for this offense.
- 30:47Speaker 10: Yeah, we've been searching for that size guy really since
- 30:50Speaker 10: we've gotten there, and you know, when Noah Thomas left,
- 30:53Speaker 10: we didn't really have that replacement.
- 30:55Speaker 5: And I think.
- 30:56Speaker 10: Going out and getting a guy who has the ability
- 30:58Speaker 10: to have a big catch radius, who can make the
- 31:00Speaker 10: contested catches, who is a difficult cover regardless of how
- 31:04Speaker 10: close you are to him, just because he can make
- 31:07Speaker 10: contested catches and catch himself open. Been really excited with
- 31:11Speaker 10: his development through this offseason. I think he's really bought
- 31:14Speaker 10: into what we're trying to do and become a really
- 31:16Speaker 10: really good route runner. And so I think when you
- 31:18Speaker 10: talk about the combination of Mario Isaiah along with Ashton,
- 31:23Speaker 10: Bethel Roman and Terry Bussey, I think we've got a
- 31:26Speaker 10: lot of depth in that wide receiver room to be
- 31:28Speaker 10: really really explosive.
- 31:30Speaker 8: Coach, We'll go be here on our middle aisle right
- 31:33Speaker 8: in front.
- 31:33Speaker 20: Hey, Coach Nickolausa from WOG and Athens, can you give
- 31:36Speaker 20: us some insight on the decision making to promote Holman
- 31:40Speaker 20: Wiggins from within to offense a coordinator than looking elsewhere.
- 31:43Speaker 10: Yeah, I think we did both. I think we ran
- 31:45Speaker 10: a national search. I think we interviewed and talked to
- 31:47Speaker 10: a lot of guys. But I think one of the things,
- 31:50Speaker 10: one of the mistakes sometimes we make is is we
- 31:53Speaker 10: assume different is always better, and I think, in my
- 31:56Speaker 10: experience is that's not always the case. And so I
- 31:59Speaker 10: knew who Home was. He's an extremely intelligent football coach.
- 32:03Speaker 10: He's got a lot of experience, not only at Texas
- 32:06Speaker 10: A and M, but also in this conference. I think
- 32:09Speaker 10: has a resume of unbelievable offensive success, has done a
- 32:13Speaker 10: phenomenal job of enhancing our wide receiver room, and so
- 32:16Speaker 10: just have a ton of confidence in who he is
- 32:18Speaker 10: as a football coach and what he's capable of doing
- 32:22Speaker 10: as he moves into that role. And so obviously he'll
- 32:25Speaker 10: have to take the step of calling plays, but I
- 32:28Speaker 10: think everything else he has already accomplished at an elite
- 32:31Speaker 10: level in college football, and somebody had to give him
- 32:34Speaker 10: an opportunity, and I didn't want it to be another program,
- 32:37Speaker 10: and so we decided to make the move ourselves.
- 32:40Speaker 8: Okay, we'll stay in the center ow over here on
- 32:42Speaker 8: the left.
- 32:43Speaker 21: Hey, coach court Samuels of Inside Texas, I just want
- 32:46Speaker 21: to see if you can comment on the differences of
- 32:49Speaker 21: maybe game planning and scheming from when you enter the
- 32:52Speaker 21: conference up to now continue to considering the games of
- 32:55Speaker 21: all so much.
- 32:56Speaker 10: Yeah, I think probably one of the biggest things that
- 32:59Speaker 10: has happened is the has slowed down. I think I
- 33:01Speaker 10: just talked about this on Digital Row a little bit.
- 33:04Speaker 10: I think, you know, with the way we can talk
- 33:07Speaker 10: to the linebackers now, the way the coach offensive coaches
- 33:10Speaker 10: can talk to the quarterbacks, I think the need to
- 33:12Speaker 10: communicate has become more of a premium and I think
- 33:15Speaker 10: that has changed the game a lot in terms of
- 33:18Speaker 10: what people are doing at the line of scrimmage, how
- 33:20Speaker 10: people are operating at the line of scrimmage. I also
- 33:23Speaker 10: think that the transfer portal has impacted depth among rosters
- 33:27Speaker 10: a lot, and so you've kind of moved away a
- 33:30Speaker 10: little bit from these uber high paced, fast paced offenses
- 33:33Speaker 10: because I don't think they have the ability to sustain
- 33:36Speaker 10: that anymore over the course of an entire season. And
- 33:39Speaker 10: so I just think that there's always evolution in the game,
- 33:43Speaker 10: and I think it's shifted more to A at the
- 33:46Speaker 10: line of scrimmage, put some emphasis on the quarterback because
- 33:51Speaker 10: the head the offensive coordinator can talk directly to him
- 33:53Speaker 10: at the line of scrimmage. And then I think defenses
- 33:56Speaker 10: have had to be able to use the communication with
- 33:58Speaker 10: the linebackers to be able to holve and stay up with.
- 34:01Speaker 8: That, We'll go over to our right hand side.
- 34:05Speaker 20: Hey, coach Bruce Marshall from w HBQ in Memphis. I
- 34:09Speaker 20: apologize for wearing the Texas shirt. I got confused looking
- 34:13Speaker 20: at the schedule. I promised tomorrow to wear my A
- 34:15Speaker 20: and M shirt when coach Circusian talks perfect anyway, just
- 34:19Speaker 20: to get that out of the way. Real quick question
- 34:20Speaker 20: about the NIL Just trying to wrap my head around
- 34:24Speaker 20: it a little bit. And maybe this is something Derek
- 34:27Speaker 20: Miller would be I should you ask him. But A
- 34:31Speaker 20: and M has quite a nice mill operation going. But
- 34:35Speaker 20: institutionally across all the sports, is NIL money earmarked for
- 34:40Speaker 20: specific sports or is it general across the whole ethletic department?
- 34:45Speaker 20: And does basketball and women's sports do they have their
- 34:49Speaker 20: own Derek Miller's who kind of solicit for those sports?
- 34:55Speaker 5: That's a deep question.
- 34:56Speaker 10: First, when you said Neil, I thought we were talking
- 34:58Speaker 10: about soccer for a second.
- 35:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:01Speaker 10: I think we have tried to do and be a
- 35:05Speaker 10: very strategic program and athletic department in the NIL era.
- 35:10Speaker 10: I think as we move forward, it's not lost the
- 35:14Speaker 10: impact that NIL has in acquiring talent, and not that
- 35:19Speaker 10: you want to be in the world of being at
- 35:21Speaker 10: the highest end or buying people, so to speak, but
- 35:25Speaker 10: the value that you're able to provide your student athletes.
- 35:28Speaker 10: It enables you to retain and attract some of the
- 35:31Speaker 10: best talent, and so it's not lost the impact that
- 35:34Speaker 10: NIL has. And so I think we've just tried to
- 35:36Speaker 10: be extremely strategic, not only as a football program, but
- 35:40Speaker 10: as an athletic department and how to navigate that space
- 35:43Speaker 10: as we move forward. Related to other programs within our university,
- 35:47Speaker 10: I wouldn't want to comment on how they run their program. Certainly,
- 35:51Speaker 10: Derek Miller for US does a really really good job
- 35:54Speaker 10: of partnering with our athletic department to make sure that
- 35:58Speaker 10: we're funding things at the level.
- 35:59Speaker 5: We need to to be able to compete and be successful.
- 36:02Speaker 8: As we'll go in the middle and the section right
- 36:04Speaker 8: in front of me.
- 36:05Speaker 18: Hey, Mike, Alex familiar with the Brian College station Eagle.
- 36:08Speaker 18: You and some of your players have really mentioned the
- 36:10Speaker 18: need or the desire to create more turnovers this coming season.
- 36:14Speaker 18: I'm just curious how you go about, you know, coaching,
- 36:17Speaker 18: teaching your guys to tangibly do that and improve in
- 36:20Speaker 18: that area.
- 36:21Speaker 10: Yeah, I think turnovers is a skill. I think your
- 36:24Speaker 10: ability to punch an attack at the football and cause
- 36:27Speaker 10: turnovers is a skill, just like blocking, just like tackling,
- 36:31Speaker 10: just like catching. And so I think we've spent some
- 36:34Speaker 10: time in film work trying to show and illustrate where
- 36:37Speaker 10: turnovers come from. Show some opportunities last year where we
- 36:40Speaker 10: had opportunities to create them and we didn't do it properly.
- 36:44Speaker 10: Then you try to go out all off season and
- 36:46Speaker 10: drill it to the best of you can. I also
- 36:49Speaker 10: think ball skills has been a major emphasis point for
- 36:52Speaker 10: us on defense. Obviously, we did not have a lot
- 36:55Speaker 10: of or enough interceptions last year, and so some of
- 36:58Speaker 10: that is maybe being a little bit more zone coverage
- 37:01Speaker 10: driven and wanting to give ourselves an opportunity to do that.
- 37:04Speaker 10: But another big piece of it is just having better
- 37:07Speaker 10: ball skills. And so I think we put a lot
- 37:09Speaker 10: of onus on our second third level, to get on
- 37:12Speaker 10: the jugs more, to catch more footballs, to make that
- 37:15Speaker 10: a bigger priority in our offseason drill work, just so
- 37:19Speaker 10: that we can enhance ball skills across our defense.
- 37:22Speaker 8: We're going to stay in that same section. A couple
- 37:23Speaker 8: of Rose.
- 37:24Speaker 22: Back Carter Carls on three Mike You and Marcel had
- 37:31Speaker 22: mentioned going into last season and in retrospect that maybe
- 37:35Speaker 22: the criticism around him not being a passer was a
- 37:39Speaker 22: bit unfair. I'm curious if you feel like maybe people
- 37:42Speaker 22: still doubt him and what maybe people get wrong about
- 37:45Speaker 22: him still.
- 37:48Speaker 10: Yeah, No, I think the narrative around Marcel has been
- 37:51Speaker 10: pretty fair. I think he's evolved into a dual threat quarterback.
- 37:54Speaker 10: I think a lot of people recognize that. I think
- 37:56Speaker 10: at his highs, he's an elite quarterback. I think he
- 38:00Speaker 10: knows he's got to play at that consistent level. And
- 38:02Speaker 10: that's not just him, that's us as an offense. That's blocking,
- 38:05Speaker 10: that's running, that's catching, that's everything. And I think we
- 38:09Speaker 10: know if we can play at his best consistently, he
- 38:12Speaker 10: has an opportunity to hit a really, really high ceiling.
- 38:15Speaker 10: And so I think last year there was a narrative
- 38:17Speaker 10: that he couldn't throw.
- 38:19Speaker 5: I thought that was a little bit unjust.
- 38:21Speaker 10: I think this year, I think people have recognized what
- 38:23Speaker 10: he's capable of now, which.
- 38:25Speaker 8: We're going to go to the back right hand side
- 38:26Speaker 8: of the room all the way and near the back
- 38:28Speaker 8: of the room.
- 38:29Speaker 15: High coach Jacob werlind k r Ui sports after last
- 38:33Speaker 15: year's playoff run, how do you keep this team from
- 38:36Speaker 15: becoming satisfied?
- 38:39Speaker 10: I show him our trophy case and it's empty, and
- 38:42Speaker 10: I think they're all very aware of that, and so
- 38:45Speaker 10: you know, I think, you know, listen, we live in
- 38:48Speaker 10: a lot of worlds, and so we're obviously happy with
- 38:50Speaker 10: the things that we accomplished. We're happy with the direction
- 38:52Speaker 10: of our program. But it's also not lost on us
- 38:55Speaker 10: that we haven't won the hardware that we're searching for.
- 38:58Speaker 10: And so you know, that gets us into a mindset
- 39:01Speaker 10: of growth and getting back to work to go finish
- 39:04Speaker 10: this thing a little bit better than we did last
- 39:06Speaker 10: year and put ourselves in a better position maybe to
- 39:09Speaker 10: compete for some trophies.
- 39:11Speaker 8: Okay, we're going to go straight in front of me.
- 39:13Speaker 8: Second row Kirk kurk Bolson, he's the chronicle.
- 39:17Speaker 3: Mike I've known Texas and Oklahoma coaches that have told
- 39:21Speaker 3: me they prepare a little bit every week of the
- 39:23Speaker 3: year for any other rival. Robert Rige, do you subscribe
- 39:28Speaker 3: to that kind of thinking or you wait till the
- 39:29Speaker 3: Thanksgiving week? And I'm curious if a day goes by
- 39:33Speaker 3: without you being reminded of a Texas game by Aggie fans.
- 39:38Speaker 10: No, I don't probably have a day go by without
- 39:40Speaker 10: being reminded how important that game is to me.
- 39:42Speaker 5: But that's okay.
- 39:43Speaker 10: I think that's what's great about college rivalries is the
- 39:46Speaker 10: passion that our fan base has for that game, and
- 39:50Speaker 10: certainly is matched by their fan base for that game
- 39:53Speaker 10: as well. I think, not only because of the rivalry,
- 39:57Speaker 10: but also because of the status of both pro I
- 40:00Speaker 10: think it would be naive to not say that we
- 40:02Speaker 10: put a little bit of extra work into preparation for
- 40:06Speaker 10: that game, because you know that game inevitably is going
- 40:10Speaker 10: to mean an awful lot. It has for the last
- 40:12Speaker 10: two seasons, not just because of the proximity and the rivalry,
- 40:16Speaker 10: but because it seems to have playoff and SEC championship
- 40:19Speaker 10: implications as well. And so when you put all of
- 40:22Speaker 10: that into that game, it certainly makes a little bit
- 40:26Speaker 10: of sense.
- 40:26Speaker 5: To give it some extra preparation.
- 40:28Speaker 8: We're going to go down the centerisle all the way
- 40:30Speaker 8: towards the back of the room.
- 40:33Speaker 13: Coach Raymond parks with ESPN one oh three seven Lafayette.
- 40:37Speaker 13: You bring back a ton of skill position guys. You
- 40:39Speaker 13: bring back a ton of guys on the back end
- 40:41Speaker 13: as well. On your defense the line of scrimmage. You're
- 40:45Speaker 13: having to break in a lot of new guys on
- 40:46Speaker 13: both sides of the football. My question to you is
- 40:49Speaker 13: how much confidence do you have that you and your
- 40:51Speaker 13: staff are going to get them ready for such a
- 40:53Speaker 13: tough schedule.
- 40:55Speaker 10: I gotta have confidence because the schedule's coming and we
- 40:58Speaker 10: got to be ready.
- 40:58Speaker 5: We don't have much of a choice. No. I think
- 41:01Speaker 5: two things.
- 41:02Speaker 10: I think one, we've had more We've had more defensive
- 41:05Speaker 10: lineman drafted than any program in the country since I
- 41:08Speaker 10: got to Texas A and M in twenty eighteen, and
- 41:11Speaker 10: so we have gotten into a rhythm of replacing d
- 41:14Speaker 10: linemen that have been drafted. I think last year at
- 41:16Speaker 10: this time, there was a very similar conversation. We had
- 41:19Speaker 10: just had three draft picks, one first rounder, two second rounders.
- 41:24Speaker 10: We were talking about how we were going to be
- 41:25Speaker 10: able to replace that talent, and we did it with,
- 41:28Speaker 10: you know, a second rounder and two third rounders, and
- 41:31Speaker 10: so I think we were able to replace it at
- 41:33Speaker 10: a really high level. We've got to be able to
- 41:36Speaker 10: go do it again. Now we can't just talk about it.
- 41:38Speaker 10: We got to go do it. And so we've got
- 41:40Speaker 10: to elevate the players that we have in the program
- 41:42Speaker 10: and get them into a position where they can go
- 41:45Speaker 10: out and they can compete at the level that has
- 41:47Speaker 10: become the standard of our defensive line on the other
- 41:50Speaker 10: side of the ball. I think we've done everything that
- 41:52Speaker 10: we possibly can to create an environment.
- 41:54Speaker 5: For us to be successful.
- 41:55Speaker 10: You know, we went out and we added four transfer
- 41:58Speaker 10: portal guys who had starting experience in the SEC. We've
- 42:01Speaker 10: recruited at a really high level. We have some extremely
- 42:04Speaker 10: talented young players who are chomping at the bit for
- 42:07Speaker 10: their opportunity, and so what that has created is a
- 42:10Speaker 10: ton of competition for those spots, and so I think
- 42:14Speaker 10: competition always elevates, and so our goal is to make
- 42:18Speaker 10: sure coming out of fall camp we have an offensive
- 42:21Speaker 10: line that is ready to cohesively function together and play
- 42:25Speaker 10: at the level we need them to play. To go
- 42:27Speaker 10: be successful and you know, whether we get that done
- 42:30Speaker 10: week one, two, three, that's got to happen as quick
- 42:32Speaker 10: as it possibly can.
- 42:34Speaker 8: We'll take one final question about midway back on our right.
- 42:38Speaker 23: In CINERA coach rynch prior Columbia Missourian. In your time
- 42:42Speaker 23: at Texas A and M, you've had a lot of
- 42:44Speaker 23: success on the road. What do you credit to your
- 42:47Speaker 23: success on the road, especially in a conference like the
- 42:50Speaker 23: SEC We're winning on the road is such a big deal.
- 42:53Speaker 10: Yeah, I think it was such a big emphasis point
- 42:55Speaker 10: for me when we took over because we had had
- 42:58Speaker 10: such struggles. I think I took over had been since
- 43:01Speaker 10: twenty twenty one. Actually at Columbia Missouri was the last
- 43:04Speaker 10: road game we had won in the conference, and so
- 43:07Speaker 10: we knew in order to take the next step and
- 43:09Speaker 10: the next hurdle that we wanted to take, winning on
- 43:12Speaker 10: the road was going to be a big part of it.
- 43:14Speaker 10: As you looked at our schedule last year, some of
- 43:16Speaker 10: the daunting road trips that we had on the schedule,
- 43:19Speaker 10: winning on the road was going to be a big
- 43:20Speaker 10: part of it.
- 43:21Speaker 5: And I just think when you play in this conference.
- 43:24Speaker 10: You have to dedicate a lot of time to playing
- 43:26Speaker 10: in environments that are going to be really, really uncomfortable,
- 43:29Speaker 10: because that's where success is going to get defined. And
- 43:32Speaker 10: certainly this year is no different. We've got some daunting
- 43:35Speaker 10: road trips again that we're going to have to take
- 43:38Speaker 10: this year, and so it's just something we spent.
- 43:40Speaker 5: A lot of time on.
- 43:41Speaker 10: We start installing our cadences in springball. It's become part
- 43:45Speaker 10: of our base operation, how we're going to function in
- 43:48Speaker 10: those environments. We start really drilling down on in fall camp,
- 43:52Speaker 10: and I just think it's as big a part of
- 43:55Speaker 10: how you play offense nowadays is anything you do because
- 43:58Speaker 10: you know success is going to be such a big
- 44:00Speaker 10: part of what happens in those games.
- 44:03Speaker 9: All right, that's Aggie coach Mike Oco.
- 44:05Speaker 1: And how about that hadn't won anything yet. He understands
- 44:12Speaker 1: this is not just about getting to the playoffs. He
- 44:15Speaker 1: wants to win the whole thing. And I think that's
- 44:18Speaker 1: that's a great attitude to have because he has this
- 44:20Speaker 1: program moving up now. You got to replace a lot
- 44:24Speaker 1: of NFL guys. But I think that looking at the
- 44:27Speaker 1: all SEC teams that have come out. The official one
- 44:31Speaker 1: isn't out yet for the league, but you know at
- 44:34Speaker 1: a lot of Aggie's getting overlooked.
- 44:36Speaker 9: I'll just say it like that.
- 44:37Speaker 1: So when we come back after the Rangers report, we'll
- 44:40Speaker 1: talk some Conference USA and some Sam Houston State football

- 47:42Speaker 2: All right.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Welcome back to an old Willie Wednesday here as Scotland
- 47:47Speaker 1: didn't in for Chip Howard, and actually sitting in the
- 47:51Speaker 1: guest chair right now is John Clunn didn't sitting in
- 47:53Speaker 1: for me.
- 47:54Speaker 9: And John was up at Conference.
- 47:56Speaker 1: USA Media Days yesterday, got to talk to the same
- 48:00Speaker 1: Houston State folks. So what were your impressions of, you know,
- 48:06Speaker 1: the bear Cats up there and how they were received?
- 48:09Speaker 1: As are they the third or fourth most senior team
- 48:13Speaker 1: in Conference USA?
- 48:14Speaker 28: Now, it depends on how you look because they're still
- 48:17Speaker 28: pretty young. They had a lot of guys transfer out
- 48:21Speaker 28: a few years ago. They had fifty six guys into
- 48:23Speaker 28: the portal going into last season. And you know, the
- 48:28Speaker 28: thing that coach Longo really talked about was the normalacy
- 48:32Speaker 28: that this team is starting to find in year two.
- 48:35Speaker 28: That you know, they had ninety three guys in spring
- 48:39Speaker 28: ball was the most he's had in his three plus
- 48:41Speaker 28: decades of coaching college football. They have forty six forty
- 48:47Speaker 28: seven guys that returned from last year's team. So maybe
- 48:51Speaker 28: they're not senior Leyden in that sense, but they may
- 48:55Speaker 28: be the most it increased experienced team. Because he talked
- 49:01Speaker 28: about in his press conference last year, we were coaching
- 49:05Speaker 28: a whole new roster of how that they wanted to
- 49:07Speaker 28: do things, and he was having to coach new coaches
- 49:09Speaker 28: on how that he wanted to do things as a
- 49:12Speaker 28: first year head coach. Second year, they bring back almost
- 49:15Speaker 28: the entire staff. The only guy that's new is their
- 49:18Speaker 28: offensive line coach Jack Bickle Junior, who has coached with
- 49:21Speaker 28: Longo at North Carolina and Ole Miss and Wisconsin, and
- 49:26Speaker 28: everybody else's back. So he's really preaching that, you know,
- 49:29Speaker 28: even if we still have younger guys, we have more
- 49:32Speaker 28: experience going into year two.
- 49:34Speaker 1: And that's normally how it is the case. I mean
- 49:36Speaker 1: you the antithesis of that would probably be Mike Elko
- 49:41Speaker 1: coming back to Texas A and m in such a
- 49:42Speaker 1: short time. People that were here that were still on
- 49:45Speaker 1: the team walked in and he looks out and he sees,
- 49:49Speaker 1: you know, half the people that are in the in
- 49:51Speaker 1: the in the seats in front of him are people
- 49:53Speaker 1: that he recruited. That's a little bit different story and
- 49:57Speaker 1: not what you normally see, and that's what coach Longo had.
- 49:59Speaker 28: To go absolutely. You know, he talked about in the
- 50:03Speaker 28: roster building last season that they had recruits on campus
- 50:08Speaker 28: every single weekend until the first weekend of August. Once
- 50:11Speaker 28: Nancaa says, you have to have your roster set. And
- 50:14Speaker 28: this year, having those ninety three guys on campus, getting
- 50:18Speaker 28: to run through spring drills, having an established quarterback in
- 50:22Speaker 28: Land and Locke who's going to enter the season as
- 50:24Speaker 28: the starter for the first time after starting the last
- 50:27Speaker 28: three games last year, all that has allowed them to
- 50:31Speaker 28: have more normalcy. That's the word that he loves to use,
- 50:34Speaker 28: is that he has guys now that are able to
- 50:37Speaker 28: turn around in line and talk to the new transfers
- 50:40Speaker 28: and talk to the new recruits and say, hey, this
- 50:43Speaker 28: is how we do things here, and this is why
- 50:45Speaker 28: we do things here. And they didn't have that at
- 50:48Speaker 28: all last year.
- 50:49Speaker 1: Another thing they didn't have last year was a home
- 50:51Speaker 1: stadium to play. And it sounded great that you were
- 50:55Speaker 1: going to go down to Houston and play. Pretty quickly
- 50:59Speaker 1: it showed that that was going to lead to a
- 51:01Speaker 1: very difficult season. Tell us about the stadium on campus
- 51:07Speaker 1: when it's going to be ready, and how excited this
- 51:09Speaker 1: football team is to get out there on that field
- 51:12Speaker 1: in front of their own fans and their own students.
- 51:16Speaker 9: That are you.
- 51:17Speaker 1: Know, like they said, yes, I guess hey, you're five
- 51:20Speaker 1: minute walk from coming to watch a football game.
- 51:22Speaker 28: Now absolutely, you know, the athletic director Bobby Williams and
- 51:25Speaker 28: the university president, doctor Alisha White, went around, looked at
- 51:30Speaker 28: all the different press boxes across the state of Texas,
- 51:33Speaker 28: across Conference USA, and it looks beautiful.
- 51:37Speaker 5: You know.
- 51:38Speaker 28: You drive up and it's on the top of the
- 51:40Speaker 28: hill over by where all the athletic fields are on campus,
- 51:44Speaker 28: and it's a real crown jewel on that part of campus.
- 51:48Speaker 28: But the guys are very excited. We had linebacker Dean Ford,
- 51:51Speaker 28: who's a red shirt sophomore this year, who actually got
- 51:54Speaker 28: to experience games at Bauer Stadium on that twenty twenty
- 51:58Speaker 28: four team when he was rehabing an injury. He got
- 52:00Speaker 28: his senior year and he talked about the difference last
- 52:03Speaker 28: year versus that first year was immense.
- 52:07Speaker 5: You know.
- 52:07Speaker 28: Coach Longo talked about he didn't really realize how big
- 52:12Speaker 28: it would be to not have fans. He calls it
- 52:15Speaker 28: the twelve Roade Games of twenty twenty five, that they
- 52:18Speaker 28: were having to get on a bus and drive two
- 52:20Speaker 28: hours down to downtown Houston to play, and then when
- 52:23Speaker 28: they got down there, nobody was cheering every time they
- 52:27Speaker 28: got a touchdown. There was no energy every time they
- 52:30Speaker 28: you know, would score or get a turnover or something
- 52:32Speaker 28: like that. Those momentum swings that you're used to in
- 52:35Speaker 28: college football, the crowd erupting and everybody getting excited wasn't present.
- 52:40Speaker 28: And so when land In Locke talked to me, he
- 52:43Speaker 28: expressed that he was excited to finally get to play
- 52:45Speaker 28: at Bowers that some of these older guys that stuck
- 52:48Speaker 28: through the coaching change that are like, hey, it's different.
- 52:52Speaker 28: Whenever you have your fans there. You know, you get
- 52:55Speaker 28: everybody that's able to tailgate before the game and the
- 52:59Speaker 28: buzz around town and then absolutely right the students a
- 53:02Speaker 28: five minute walk up the hill from the dormitories and
- 53:05Speaker 28: from the campus buildings that are just able to go
- 53:08Speaker 28: and experience college football is what It's truly like. It's
- 53:11Speaker 28: going to be really special. It opens up to the
- 53:14Speaker 28: media on Thursday, July thirtieth, so that's gonna be really
- 53:18Speaker 28: exciting to get to go in there see that see
- 53:20Speaker 28: what's been improved for really the first stadium improvement in
- 53:25Speaker 28: over forty years since they built Bauer Stadium in Huntsville.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Landon Locke, the quarterback I guess because what you just
- 53:34Speaker 1: told me a little bit of tidbit about the Locke family,
- 53:37Speaker 1: and I guess he would have been there sitting on
- 53:39Speaker 1: the couch when something pretty special happened to his brother.
- 53:42Speaker 28: Yeah, he's the younger brother of Brandon Locke, who's now
- 53:45Speaker 28: at Charlton State, but was originally recruited by Mike Leach
- 53:49Speaker 28: to go play at Mississippi State. It's you know, Coach
- 53:53Speaker 28: Longo talked about his connection with Mike Leach and the
- 53:56Speaker 28: fingerprints that are on this program from coach Leach and
- 53:59Speaker 28: the air raid and what they want to do. But
- 54:01Speaker 28: just really cool to know that connection of Brandon Locke
- 54:05Speaker 28: was the last quarterback recruited to Mississippi State that actually
- 54:09Speaker 28: put on the uniform before Mike Leach, you know, unfortunately
- 54:13Speaker 28: passed away. And he's been a little bit of a journeyman.
- 54:16Speaker 28: He played for Phil Longo, he transferred up there after
- 54:19Speaker 28: coach Leach passed away, and Windon played at Wisconsin, started
- 54:22Speaker 28: some games there and now he's at Tarleton. But Landon,
- 54:26Speaker 28: you know, was recruited to Wisconsin and then when coach
- 54:29Speaker 28: Longo got the job at Sam Houston, decided to come
- 54:32Speaker 28: back and he told me, you know, he had never
- 54:33Speaker 28: been to Huntsville. He had been committed to coach Longo
- 54:36Speaker 28: for so long that he never took any visits elsewhere,
- 54:40Speaker 28: and then as soon as he came to Huntsville, he
- 54:42Speaker 28: you know, was just how close it is to home.
- 54:45Speaker 28: The atmosphere, you know, getting to come off of ten
- 54:49Speaker 28: and three season where they won the New Orleans Bowl
- 54:52Speaker 28: and seeing what's capable at Sam Houston really is what
- 54:54Speaker 28: sold him to come with coach Longo. And he's really
- 54:57Speaker 28: excited having an offseason entrenched as the starting quarterback and
- 55:01Speaker 28: getting to take those next steps in his development.
- 55:04Speaker 1: On the Players to Watch list that was put out
- 55:07Speaker 1: by Conference USA, give us a couple of the other
- 55:09Speaker 1: names of who the league thinks could be stars for
- 55:14Speaker 1: Sam Houston.
- 55:15Speaker 28: Yeah, the first one I think that sticks out the
- 55:17Speaker 28: most is Ultimatecaskell. They run an air raid offense, but
- 55:21Speaker 28: coach Longo also wants to run the football. He joked
- 55:24Speaker 28: in his press conference. You know, Mike would talk to
- 55:26Speaker 28: him weekly and ask him for some kind of wrinkle
- 55:29Speaker 28: and then he would never hear back from him until
- 55:31Speaker 28: the next week because he would send him a run
- 55:32Speaker 28: play and so Ulti mccaskell he was at the University
- 55:37Speaker 28: of Houston two years ago. Before that was playing high
- 55:40Speaker 28: power for college football, and I believe Arizona started off
- 55:46Speaker 28: started off the season with the bang and then got
- 55:50Speaker 28: hurt and struggled through some injuries, but still ended up
- 55:53Speaker 28: being the cats leading rusher and then also on the
- 55:56Speaker 28: offensive line. Tim Burns Junior. They have him listed as
- 55:59Speaker 28: a kick returner to Walt, but expecting him to take
- 56:02Speaker 28: the next step forward as a receiver. Had over two
- 56:04Speaker 28: hundred receiving yards last year and probably had the biggest
- 56:07Speaker 28: play of the season, had a kick return for a
- 56:10Speaker 28: touchdown against Oregon State, which started a second half comeback
- 56:13Speaker 28: that saw Land and Locke actually enter the game in
- 56:17Speaker 28: that comeback and lead SAM Houston to their first win
- 56:20Speaker 28: of the year when they were at zero to eight
- 56:22Speaker 28: and sitting on top of the bottom ten on the
- 56:24Speaker 28: ESPN rankings that week. But he's going to be a
- 56:27Speaker 28: guy that they're looking to get more out of. He's
- 56:29Speaker 28: an explosive athlete.
- 56:31Speaker 1: All right, Hey, John, we appreciate it, Thanks so much.
- 56:33Speaker 1: That's a look at SAM Houston State as down the
- 56:36Speaker 1: road to hospital. Next week, they opened up the new
- 56:39Speaker 1: Bauer Stadium and a lot of Sam Houston fans were
- 56:42Speaker 1: looking forward to that.
- 56:44Speaker 9: We'll be right back. Here's Chip to tell you about Burdette.
- 56:48Speaker 9: I'm sorry, not Burdett and Sons. Is it okay?
- 56:51Speaker 11: Yeah, you know, Burdett and Son has been part of
- 56:53Speaker 11: our community for a long time. Barry and Sarah carrying
- 56:58Speaker 11: on the family tradition outdoors, whether it's gunsmithing, and you know,
- 57:04Speaker 11: this is the time of year, not August or September,
- 57:07Speaker 11: when you realize, hey, it needs work, it needs cleaning,
- 57:11Speaker 11: and needs sighting. They do that every day, reloading equipment, clothing,
- 57:17Speaker 11: camo rifles, pistols, shotguns, ammunition. They have guns on consignment
- 57:27Speaker 11: as well. They carry black Rifle coffee. The folks there
- 57:33Speaker 11: live outdoors. You're going to get people that are knowledgeable
- 57:38Speaker 11: and that's very important and local and that's very important.
- 57:44Speaker 11: You can follow them on social media Burnett and Son.
- 57:47Speaker 11: Go see them. Ten fifty five Texas Avenue, next to
