- 0:00Many paths of spiritual practice disregard the needs of the
- 0:05physical body as being irrelevant, distracting, or
- 0:09obstructive to their spiritual development.
- 0:13This has not always been the case.
- 0:16The ancient Greek culture focused on a sound mind and a
- 0:20sound body as an ideal. The ancient Vedic tradition
- 0:24recognized the need for a strong body, strong vital force, and
- 0:29strong mind as a foundation for spiritual fulfillment.
- 0:34For the Integral Yoga, which focuses on the transformation of
- 0:38human life, not the aesthetic ideal which leads away from
- 0:42life. The body, life, energy, and mind
- 0:46need to be optimized and strengthened both to hold and to
- 0:50deploy the force that descends from above into the being.
- 0:57Whenever and in whatever manner the body receives nourishment of
- 1:01any sort, it needs to utilize energy to assimilate it.
- 1:06We can see this when we eat food that afterwards the body may
- 1:11seem lethargic. We may want to nap or take some
- 1:15form of rest to allow the digestive processes of the body
- 1:19to accomplish their task. A similar process takes place
- 1:24when the higher spiritual force descends and begins to put its
- 1:28pressure on the body. To the extent the body is unable
- 1:32to fully hold and sustain the force, particularly in the early
- 1:36stages, it may experience a deep sense of tiredness that
- 1:41indicates it is overwhelmed momentarily trying to assimilate
- 1:46what is being presented to us. Srioro Bindo describes various
- 1:51potential causes for the sense of physical fatigue that can
- 1:54arise for the spiritual seeker. Srioro Bindo writes quote
- 2:01physical fatigue like this in the course of the Sadhna may
- 2:04come from various reasons. One, it may come from receiving
- 2:09more than the physical is ready to assimilate.
- 2:12The cure is then quiet rest in conscious immobility, receiving
- 2:17the forces, but not for any other purpose than the
- 2:20recuperation of the strength and energy.
- 2:23Two. It may be due to the passivity
- 2:27taking the form of inertia. Inertia brings the consciousness
- 2:31down towards the ordinary physical level, which is soon
- 2:35fatigued and prone to Thomas. The cure here is to get back
- 2:40into the true consciousness and to rest there not in inertia. 3
- 2:46It may be due to mere over strain of the body not giving it
- 2:50enough sleep or repose. The body is the support of the
- 2:54yoga, but its energy is not inexhaustible and needs to be
- 2:59husbanded. It can be kept up by drawing on
- 3:03the universal vital force, but that reinforcement too has its
- 3:08limits. A certain moderation is needed
- 3:11even in the eagerness for progress.
- 3:14Moderation, not indifference or indolence.
