- 0:01Speaker 1: Some of the content of Patriots Unfiltered may not be
- 0:03Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised. The World's
- 0:09Speaker 1: Origion Welcome to Patriot's Unfiltered. I also wonder, you know
- 0:19Speaker 1: what the the compensation for Hopkins. They were kind of
- 0:23Speaker 1: looking for a player, you know, as well as a
- 0:25Speaker 1: draft pick, and I just wonder if maybe Chris Board
- 0:30Speaker 1: that good. You don't trade the best special teams player
- 0:32Speaker 1: in the league right after you Right, I'm okay with
- 0:35Speaker 1: signing the Chris Boards of the world. That's fine. It's
- 0:38Speaker 1: it's okay. Paul's looking at me like, okay, go ahead.
- 0:42Speaker 1: They cut him for a special teamer. But if you
- 0:45Speaker 1: think those two guys are equal, I don't know if
- 0:46Speaker 1: I can't help. Who tells you that Patriots banger? I'm bang,
- 0:50Speaker 1: I'm big bang, I'm big in bang money. I'm talking
- 0:53Speaker 1: about money. I always talk about money. That was cash spending.
- 0:56Speaker 1: That's not cap right, It's two different things. You can disagree.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I know that you know more. Somebody will be punting
- 1:02Speaker 1: for the Patriots this year. This is Patriots Unfiltered, fueled
- 1:08Speaker 1: by Duncan. We're on the air. Oh I missed the
- 1:17Speaker 1: open bald. Yeah, my Mike's down. I'm just not prepared.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I was talking about my interactions. I'm just not prepared anyway.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Welcome to uh Patriots Unfiltered. It is Thursday here at
- 1:32Speaker 1: Gillette Stadium. It's Evan, it's Alex, Paul, myself, Matt and
- 1:36Speaker 1: the boots. Is that holy Cross? Holy Cross Pro Day?
- 1:41Speaker 1: For some reason that I can't explain because there's no
- 1:45Speaker 1: one there that we're really looking at. But Mike is
- 1:48Speaker 1: an alumni there, so I'm sure he wants to, you know,
- 1:50Speaker 1: he's at some point later in the show. We might
- 1:53Speaker 1: get a live hit from I'm looking. Yeah, we might
- 1:56Speaker 1: get a live looking from Douce at holy Cross. But anyway, um,
- 2:02Speaker 1: it's Thursday, and you know, what are we talking about today?
- 2:07Speaker 1: It's kind of quiet. Things have quieted down since you know, Mike,
- 2:11Speaker 1: Chris Board and Mike Asiki. Um, nothing really. It was
- 2:16Speaker 1: a little news with Jalen Mills. I don't think we
- 2:19Speaker 1: talked about, oh yeah bringing him back. Yeah, yeah, that's
- 2:22Speaker 1: that's a big one. Yeah. So it looked like he
- 2:24Speaker 1: was going to be gone and look what do you
- 2:26Speaker 1: think that was? Go check out what's out there? And
- 2:29Speaker 1: then he came back and said, okay, nothing back. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:34Speaker 1: I asked, I tweet out all the moves and one
- 2:37Speaker 1: tweet I'm running out of characters, so I said, let's
- 2:40Speaker 1: start using emojis so I don't have to write out
- 2:42Speaker 1: words and let me somebody said with Jalen Mills, I
- 2:44Speaker 1: should use the boomerang emoji because you know, they sent
- 2:47Speaker 1: him out and brought him back, but it sounds like
- 2:50Speaker 1: that that's a they just ripped up the deal and
- 2:52Speaker 1: signed a one year contract restructure and it didn't actually
- 2:56Speaker 1: end up going through the transaction wire that he was
- 2:59Speaker 1: released in the first so that that was I thought
- 3:02Speaker 1: was interesting about it was that they never actually even
- 3:05Speaker 1: got to the finish line of releasing him and they
- 3:08Speaker 1: brought him back. And then there was that report that
- 3:10Speaker 1: he might play safety, you know, he might be moving
- 3:12Speaker 1: more to safety role, which I thought was was interesting.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And I saw he tweeted out saying, hey, everybody, I'm
- 3:18Speaker 1: a safety. Yeah, I play safety right yeah, and he
- 3:21Speaker 1: tweeted that before right after Devin's retirement, so before any others. Yeah.
- 3:27Speaker 1: I think it's it's an interesting trickle down effect though,
- 3:30Speaker 1: because my guess is is if they play him at
- 3:33Speaker 1: safety he'll be covering tight ends quite a bit, and
- 3:35Speaker 1: then you free up a guy like Kyle Duggard to
- 3:38Speaker 1: maybe play more in the middle of the field like
- 3:39Speaker 1: Devin mccordy used to, and it allows you to be
- 3:42Speaker 1: a little bit more flexible in that sense. So I've
- 3:45Speaker 1: always thought that dugger is a better player when he's
- 3:47Speaker 1: instinctively just chasing the ball around instead of having to
- 3:50Speaker 1: cover somebody like a tight end. So so maybe Jalen
- 3:54Speaker 1: Mills not the best guy to cover receivers on the outside,
- 3:58Speaker 1: but now you've covered some slower guy at tight end
- 4:01Speaker 1: instead of worrying about speedy guys on the outside, and
- 4:04Speaker 1: maybe that makes him a better cover player as well.
- 4:06Speaker 1: So I think it could be a good thing. Another
- 4:08Speaker 1: thing that happened since our last show was um the
- 4:11Speaker 1: official ceremony for Devin mccordy, and I thought that was
- 4:14Speaker 1: really well done. Hats off to No Socks for pulling
- 4:17Speaker 1: that all together. It's like we're producing the Oscars over.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I mean, it even got a shout out from Bill. Yeah,
- 4:23Speaker 1: the lighting and the stage and the video got some
- 4:25Speaker 1: props from Bill leaven Yeah, so it's a nice video. Yeah, Yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 1: I mean that was the extent of it. Yeah, No,
- 4:32Speaker 1: he smiled a lot watching it. Yeah he did, I
- 4:34Speaker 1: think video. Yeah, it was a good ceremony. It was.
- 4:37Speaker 1: It was nice. I enjoyed being there. Yeah, good stuff.
- 4:40Speaker 1: All the shoutouts from all his teammates, including the big
- 4:44Speaker 1: dog Tom Brady. Um. Tom looked like he went to
- 4:48Speaker 1: like a professional photo shoot to do that. He had
- 4:51Speaker 1: a background everybody aments calling in from bed bath and
- 4:55Speaker 1: be was like doing his school pictures. Yeah, everyone sucks,
- 4:59Speaker 1: but so very very nice, very nice ceremony. Yeah, the
- 5:05Speaker 1: the Edelman thing. Do you guys think Edelman's talking funny? Like?
- 5:10Speaker 1: I don't like he's I don't mean like humorous. I mean,
- 5:13Speaker 1: bro well, I kind of like the Jaws over here,
- 5:17Speaker 1: like to the I don't know his face looked I
- 5:20Speaker 1: think like everybody fixated on on Brady's face, which I
- 5:23Speaker 1: admit continues to look ridiculous gaunt and sunken cheeks, And
- 5:28Speaker 1: but I thought Edelman sounded funny. And then I don't
- 5:31Speaker 1: know if that guys, I wish I looked ridiculous like that.
- 5:35Speaker 1: But wouldn't you feel bad if you looked as ridiculously
- 5:38Speaker 1: good as he used to look? And then you look
- 5:40Speaker 1: the way he does. Now, I don't know for forty
- 5:42Speaker 1: five I think he looks pretty good. Okay, I'll second
- 5:45Speaker 1: that he's he's the one person on the planet that
- 5:47Speaker 1: doesn't think he looks different. Um, he looks different, but
- 5:49Speaker 1: that doesn't mean it doesn't look good. Did you guys
- 5:51Speaker 1: catch maybe? Did I see what the mccarde video with
- 5:58Speaker 1: with U And I don't know who he was with,
- 6:01Speaker 1: but he was talking about the aftermath of the Raiders
- 6:03Speaker 1: game and Edelman was was there and he was chirping them. Oh,
- 6:08Speaker 1: I was gonna ask you guys about this. It was
- 6:10Speaker 1: Chris Long's podcast. Okay, Yeah, it was just a funny
- 6:14Speaker 1: little clip that they showed, and Edelman was really bust
- 6:16Speaker 1: in mccardy's balls. It was after the obviously the disastrous
- 6:19Speaker 1: lateral play, right, But even that, I thought like he
- 6:23Speaker 1: was talking really funny. Like I don't know if there's
- 6:25Speaker 1: something going on with Edelman. I just his voice is
- 6:28Speaker 1: usually Yeah, I think he's just affecting. Maybe maybe that's yeah,
- 6:32Speaker 1: you know, I think sometimes when people get in front
- 6:34Speaker 1: of the camera, they don't talk like they normally do, yeah,
- 6:39Speaker 1: because they're a little bit not lacking confidence. Because I
- 6:42Speaker 1: don't know He always striked me as one of those
- 6:44Speaker 1: types of guys that has like an on camera persona
- 6:47Speaker 1: that he's not exactly the same off camera. All right,
- 6:53Speaker 1: this no question about that with Yeah, yeah, so that
- 6:58Speaker 1: that happened since Tuesday, he did you guys catch the run?
- 7:02Speaker 1: Did any of you listen to the podcast in question
- 7:04Speaker 1: or just that clip? Paul I saw a bunch of
- 7:08Speaker 1: quotes stemming out, Yeah, aggregated quotes. I thought it was
- 7:12Speaker 1: interesting what he had to say about Steve Belichick. Yeah, yeah,
- 7:15Speaker 1: that didn't exactly Devin's gonna learn that sometimes when you
- 7:19Speaker 1: say things, they don't always get taken. They don't always
- 7:22Speaker 1: get taken the way that you want right them to
- 7:26Speaker 1: be taken, Like with the Zappie and Mac thing, and
- 7:28Speaker 1: now this with Steve is not exactly gone the way
- 7:31Speaker 1: that I think he thought it was. Well, when you
- 7:32Speaker 1: listen to the actual interview, both Chris and Devin are
- 7:36Speaker 1: talking about how much they respect Steve and how much
- 7:38Speaker 1: he's learned and how but like then you read the
- 7:41Speaker 1: tweets and the transcriptions that the Beat writers are putting out,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and it's like, oh man, no one's gonna listen to
- 7:48Speaker 1: this audio and know that this was actually like a
- 7:51Speaker 1: conversation figured conversation. All the nuance got stripped from it.
- 7:54Speaker 1: But um Devin also had some interesting comments about ju
- 7:58Speaker 1: Ju coming in Jacobe leaving this He's called last training
- 8:02Speaker 1: camp the easiest training camp of his life. Too. They
- 8:06Speaker 1: gave him some days off separately from the team last
- 8:09Speaker 1: year though last summer, I think he had two or
- 8:11Speaker 1: three veteran veteran days, but I don't think that's what
- 8:15Speaker 1: he was alluding to mentioned. Yeah, but I wonder, like
- 8:18Speaker 1: anyone who's been in the league for thirteen years or whatever,
- 8:21Speaker 1: if on any team, if the training camps are getting easier,
- 8:25Speaker 1: because that's just the way of the NFL now. I
- 8:27Speaker 1: think they are too. But you know, snarky Paul will
- 8:29Speaker 1: chime in, if you were on defense and you had
- 8:31Speaker 1: to play against that offense, it would have been pretty
- 8:33Speaker 1: easy for you. Walt Ah, there you go. I heard
- 8:37Speaker 1: Paul say that in my head when I was listening
- 8:38Speaker 1: to it this morning. Yeah, that's her. Well, I actually
- 8:42Speaker 1: picked up on that from mccordy. Yes, that was one
- 8:45Speaker 1: of the other interviews that he did with EEI that
- 8:48Speaker 1: he mentioned. That's when it was sort of eye opening
- 8:50Speaker 1: to him because he knew. He's been around a long
- 8:52Speaker 1: time and he knows, you know, how good things are
- 8:56Speaker 1: or how bad they are. When he made that, I
- 8:57Speaker 1: think I said this on Tuesday. He figured out right
- 9:00Speaker 1: away like there's no we're not this good defensively that
- 9:03Speaker 1: we're going to just completely dominate every day of training
- 9:06Speaker 1: camp the way the way they did. Another piece of
- 9:08Speaker 1: news that came out yesterday, I think Dante Scarneckia being
- 9:12Speaker 1: giving the Award of Excellence. Is that something new? Yes,
- 9:17Speaker 1: so he's getting this from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I was congress. Yeah, it was awesome. But um, you
- 9:26Speaker 1: say it's a new award. Yeah, so they started it
- 9:28Speaker 1: last year. It's for assistant coaches, trainers, um, medical staff,
- 9:33Speaker 1: you know, equipment staff and pr as well. It has
- 9:36Speaker 1: content knocked out. What the heck? No, I was waiting
- 9:40Speaker 1: for Paul's name to come up. If it's content, you
- 9:42Speaker 1: gotta do me a solid no. But yeah, it's a
- 9:47Speaker 1: support staff, you know, people in the building that aren't
- 9:49Speaker 1: necessarily recognized as much as as the head coaches and
- 9:52Speaker 1: the GMS and the players. So I thought it was
- 9:55Speaker 1: really cool. I who gives the there's a committee, it's
- 9:58Speaker 1: not voted on by the same committee that votes on
- 10:01Speaker 1: for the modern ear or finalists. How would they know? Right,
- 10:04Speaker 1: So it's it's a committee made up of people that
- 10:08Speaker 1: represent those people, you know, guys, big time assistant coaches, trainers,
- 10:13Speaker 1: things like that. So you seem like you've done the
- 10:16Speaker 1: research on this, Yes, I sort of the way someone
- 10:19Speaker 1: was talking about it yesterday, is there a situation where
- 10:21Speaker 1: you sort of get nominated by your team that could be.
- 10:25Speaker 1: That's not what the rite up about it on the
- 10:27Speaker 1: Pro Football Hall of Fame website says. But I would
- 10:30Speaker 1: believe that. I was saying that, I know where you
- 10:32Speaker 1: come from, Paul. I don't think it. I don't think
- 10:34Speaker 1: it needs to be because there they do. It's not
- 10:38Speaker 1: um the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But every year
- 10:41Speaker 1: there's like a Trainer of the Year and it comes
- 10:43Speaker 1: from the Training Association, right you know? So maybe yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 1: And I saw that one of the teams. One of
- 10:50Speaker 1: the teams tweeted about that today and they said their
- 10:54Speaker 1: representative was so and so, and it was I think
- 10:57Speaker 1: it was a trainer. It was a name. I wasn't
- 10:58Speaker 1: familiar with him, and that that's why I was thinking,
- 11:01Speaker 1: I wonder if this is a position with the thirty
- 11:03Speaker 1: two teams nominate guys, but not everybody gets recognized. Everybody
- 11:07Speaker 1: quote unquote wins or elected. Yeah, so they'll do when
- 11:10Speaker 1: they put in the the actual I shouldn't say that
- 11:13Speaker 1: they put in the players into the Hall of Fame.
- 11:16Speaker 1: They will do some sort of a part of the
- 11:20Speaker 1: ceremony where coach scar Will will get named or maybe
- 11:24Speaker 1: he'll be there and I don't know, he has like
- 11:27Speaker 1: I think June twenty eighth and ninth or something like that.
- 11:31Speaker 1: There's a ceremony that they get elected the night and
- 11:36Speaker 1: then the next day is like lunch, right, and then
- 11:39Speaker 1: they'll have some there's some sort of plaque or something
- 11:41Speaker 1: like that that will in the Hall of Fame that
- 11:44Speaker 1: has will have his name on it as as somebody
- 11:47Speaker 1: that was recognized for which is for this award. Yeah,
- 11:50Speaker 1: which is really cool. I mean I I'll drive the
- 11:52Speaker 1: bus of him actually going into the Hall of Fame
- 11:54Speaker 1: as a contributor to football. I don't know, that's going
- 11:57Speaker 1: to take a pretty big push from all of us.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Unlike when I was up with you all those twenty
- 12:02Speaker 1: some odd years. You know down in KSP, we we
- 12:05Speaker 1: really work and we really think it's a think tank
- 12:08Speaker 1: down there, is that, right? Is? That's what happens to think.
- 12:10Speaker 1: So we threw this out there yesterday, um with the
- 12:14Speaker 1: you know, when we found this this Dante news out,
- 12:18Speaker 1: thirty most important people in Patriots organization history? Would you
- 12:23Speaker 1: put would you put no? No, no no, would you put
- 12:25Speaker 1: Dante among say the thirty most I think sure, yeah.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I mean when you start to think about it, though,
- 12:33Speaker 1: there's a lot of important people, you know, you know,
- 12:36Speaker 1: because you're including players, right everybody, I'm including everybody. Ye,
- 12:40Speaker 1: I would guess that you would have to. I mean
- 12:42Speaker 1: Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick's yeah. I mean even even Billy Sullivan.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I would have guessed you would have to include Billy Sullivan, like, yeah,
- 12:51Speaker 1: people that put us. But you know I can understand yeah, yeah,
- 12:55Speaker 1: the way I look at it, someone else would have
- 12:57Speaker 1: done it, that's true. But he did it. But he
- 12:59Speaker 1: did it. Yeah, he also had to mess up a
- 13:02Speaker 1: lot of stuff to play took it. And the contributor
- 13:07Speaker 1: portion though, of the Hall of Fame is not for
- 13:10Speaker 1: players and coaches, right, you know, head coaches. It's for
- 13:13Speaker 1: people like Dante or Ernie Adams as well, that had
- 13:17Speaker 1: the you know, real big influence on the game as contributors.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And Fred's right if you think about it, like in
- 13:23Speaker 1: the whole fifty whatever years, like you know, like Buckle
- 13:27Speaker 1: Kilroy right right, a Dick Steinberg kind of guy. You know,
- 13:31Speaker 1: they did build some really Chuck Fairbanks, they built some
- 13:34Speaker 1: really good teams that didn't win championships. Yep, um, But
- 13:38Speaker 1: that day is obviously on a shortlist, I would think.
- 13:41Speaker 1: So you know of the most influential yea important, ye
- 13:44Speaker 1: I mean it's rare, Like there's a lot of guys
- 13:47Speaker 1: in the NFL that have long you know, careers, but
- 13:52Speaker 1: they do it with several teams. You know. The coaches
- 13:54Speaker 1: they move around. It's rare that a coach stays with
- 13:57Speaker 1: one team for that long, um, through several different head
- 14:01Speaker 1: coaches and the James too, they all kept on. And
- 14:04Speaker 1: that's why they change a lot, is because coaches change,
- 14:07Speaker 1: owners change, you know. But he's through too bad. He
- 14:10Speaker 1: had that two years that he went with Ron Meyer. Yeah,
- 14:12Speaker 1: I mean he's he's been what through how many like
- 14:15Speaker 1: at least three owner eras, right, So he's here I
- 14:19Speaker 1: was here with Parcels, Carol and coaches, right, four I
- 14:24Speaker 1: would say four owner he was the Sullivan's right, right,
- 14:29Speaker 1: and obviously now yeah, so he's with with all the owners.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I would just have to look to see that period
- 14:37Speaker 1: that he went with Indianapolis if that was like the
- 14:40Speaker 1: entirety of say Victor Kayama. I don't know if the
- 14:42Speaker 1: years match up, but yeah, yeah, several coaches, um, I
- 14:48Speaker 1: mean it was McPherson, ray Berry, right, and then Ron
- 14:54Speaker 1: Meyer Yeah, or did he come with Ron Meyer. I
- 14:57Speaker 1: don't know, Clive Rush and all those guys, you know, Rod,
- 15:01Speaker 1: Rod Meyer, ray Berry and then like Rod Rust I
- 15:04Speaker 1: don't know if that was. That might have been the
- 15:06Speaker 1: Indianapolis time. And then you know Tick McPherson yeah, and
- 15:12Speaker 1: Parcels And I mean that's amazing to go through that
- 15:16Speaker 1: many head coaches and they all think that much of you,
- 15:18Speaker 1: that's right, they want to keep. That's what makes his
- 15:20Speaker 1: career unique. And then plus the quality of his coaching. Yeah,
- 15:24Speaker 1: you know obviously, you know, like player after players says,
- 15:28Speaker 1: you know, they wanted to play for this guy. He
- 15:30Speaker 1: got the best out of them, and that's that's the
- 15:34Speaker 1: bottom line of a coach, to try to get the
- 15:36Speaker 1: best teach and get the best out of each player,
- 15:39Speaker 1: you know, And if he can do that, then job
- 15:42Speaker 1: well done, so good good for him. So you guys,
- 15:45Speaker 1: having that comment from Zoe, it kind of bumps me out.
- 15:49Speaker 1: I was waiting for something to Zoe had a comment
- 15:51Speaker 1: that he was going to break news. I was waiting
- 15:54Speaker 1: for that, and then he just came out and said
- 15:55Speaker 1: he nothing's gonna happen. Yeah, well, it does feel like
- 15:59Speaker 1: some of the something could be closed, some of the
- 16:01Speaker 1: big market stuff, you know, DeAndre Hopkins, Lamar Jackson, like
- 16:04Speaker 1: they we're all kind of in a holding pattern to
- 16:06Speaker 1: see if anything's going to happen with any of those.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Copper Breer came out with a thing that said the
- 16:11Speaker 1: Patriots are not interested in Hopkins. Yeah, did you say
- 16:16Speaker 1: that they weren't interested in Hopkins or they weren't or
- 16:18Speaker 1: they're not looking at him or something like that, They're
- 16:20Speaker 1: not Yeah. I know we've got a lot of criticism
- 16:22Speaker 1: for that because, oh yeah, because people want it to
- 16:25Speaker 1: happen right well, but also because other reputable reporters have
- 16:29Speaker 1: said the opposite. So he's he's really the only one
- 16:32Speaker 1: that's saying that there's no connection there to be made,
- 16:36Speaker 1: Whereas you know, Jeff Howe came out and said that
- 16:38Speaker 1: they've called on all of them, on Hopkins, on Judy,
- 16:42Speaker 1: so yeah, who knows. Yeah, somebody had some interesting stats
- 16:47Speaker 1: from Hopkins last from last season, like, you know, because
- 16:50Speaker 1: he didn't play a full season and if you extrapolated out,
- 16:54Speaker 1: I mean, he would have had a monster season. And
- 16:57Speaker 1: you know, because there's a lot of talk about you know,
- 16:59Speaker 1: he's old, you know, he's not the player he used
- 17:02Speaker 1: to be, and this person was making the case that
- 17:05Speaker 1: he's still pretty damn good. Tom Current is the one
- 17:09Speaker 1: was it. Current tweeted that he was top ten in
- 17:11Speaker 1: the league and receiving yards per game just just the
- 17:13Speaker 1: easiest way to look at per game basis type thing.
- 17:16Speaker 1: And it's almost at ninety I think last year when
- 17:20Speaker 1: he played, and that included the games with Colt McCoy
- 17:22Speaker 1: and you know whoever else they were starting at. Yeah,
- 17:25Speaker 1: and he had some of those those kinds of years
- 17:27Speaker 1: in Houston when he didn't necessarily have Deshaun Watson. Yeah.
- 17:31Speaker 1: So he's the guys obviously, uh, one of the best
- 17:36Speaker 1: wide receivers of his era. YEA, Now the question is
- 17:40Speaker 1: what is you willing to pay for that? At this stage,
- 17:42Speaker 1: you'll be thirty one, I think during the season. What
- 17:44Speaker 1: do you what do you not only what are you
- 17:45Speaker 1: willing to give up, but what are you willing to
- 17:47Speaker 1: pay him? I give him a second round or I
- 17:50Speaker 1: give him twenty Like that's like to me, it's thought
- 17:55Speaker 1: about the ye what you're giving up? And because I
- 17:58Speaker 1: think that's actually going down And I haven't said this
- 18:01Speaker 1: on Tuesday, and I agree with them. I think it
- 18:03Speaker 1: probably started at first second round pick, but I think
- 18:06Speaker 1: the longer it goes, it's like a game. They look,
- 18:08Speaker 1: they look at the branding Cooks thing. It's probably gonna
- 18:10Speaker 1: end up being closer to Cooks than it's going to
- 18:12Speaker 1: be to a first round pick. I just look at
- 18:14Speaker 1: the game of musical chairs. You know, Cleveland makes the
- 18:16Speaker 1: move for Elijah More, Dallas trades for Cooks. These teams
- 18:20Speaker 1: that are interested in wide receivers, all of a sudden,
- 18:22Speaker 1: there's not that many chairs left, right, Like there really isn't.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And the Jets just brought in Hardeman, right, Yeah, so
- 18:28Speaker 1: they're they're they're poking around Odell as well, because Aaron
- 18:31Speaker 1: Rodgers wants Odell. So that's probably gonna happen. It sounds
- 18:35Speaker 1: like I think Tom pellar Ser this morning said that
- 18:37Speaker 1: he thinks it's or maybe it was Darlington, one of
- 18:40Speaker 1: those two. I always get them confused that it's like
- 18:43Speaker 1: I do too. It's like, it's funny, it's a done
- 18:45Speaker 1: deal that once they Aaron Rodgers Ston goes through that
- 18:48Speaker 1: they'll take care of of O'Dell and they're gonna come together.
- 18:51Speaker 1: So it sounds like Jets. Yeah, it sounds like there's
- 18:56Speaker 1: just some other you know, if you're trying to look
- 18:59Speaker 1: for landingsor DeAndre Hopkins. I think that two other teams
- 19:01Speaker 1: that people have thrown out are the Chiefs potentially just
- 19:05Speaker 1: doing what the Patriots used to do and attracting an
- 19:08Speaker 1: aging veteran at the end of his career, or a
- 19:11Speaker 1: team like Buffalo doing sort of the same thing where
- 19:13Speaker 1: maybe he takes a little bit less money to chase
- 19:16Speaker 1: a ring With one of those. I'd be careful with
- 19:18Speaker 1: buff if I were Buffalo with him, because I think
- 19:21Speaker 1: they already could be volatile with With Diggs, I think
- 19:24Speaker 1: that the clock has taken. I think they're starting to
- 19:25Speaker 1: feel a little heat. I think will be Ja could
- 19:27Speaker 1: be a a bad mix for that. Yeah, yeah, I mean,
- 19:32Speaker 1: obviously he'd be an upgrade talent wise. Their whole fan
- 19:36Speaker 1: base is clamoring for the one bat to Stefon Diggs,
- 19:40Speaker 1: like who's probably a second receiver? So Hopkins his name
- 19:44Speaker 1: has come up. I guess he instagrammed last night like
- 19:47Speaker 1: Buffalo Soldier, but he was like Bob Marley lyrics and like,
- 19:50Speaker 1: so they all all of Bill's Twitter just blew up
- 19:53Speaker 1: thinking that he was saying that he was going to
- 19:55Speaker 1: Buffalo and then, uh, you know he had At times,
- 19:57Speaker 1: I'm lready glad I'm not in that world. Yeah, O'Dell
- 20:01Speaker 1: linked to them a little bit to be that that
- 20:03Speaker 1: second receiver behind dig so they're poking around there. But
- 20:07Speaker 1: I just I don't know. I feel like with Hopkins,
- 20:09Speaker 1: I still am not like totally sold on it, because
- 20:13Speaker 1: it feels to me like he would have one good
- 20:15Speaker 1: year here, he would you would know next year he
- 20:17Speaker 1: would have probably have a great season, assuming health and
- 20:20Speaker 1: all those things. But but then what you know, he's
- 20:22Speaker 1: thirty one years old. I feel like this has a
- 20:26Speaker 1: good chance of being kind of Moss like in the
- 20:28Speaker 1: sense that it's like one or two really really good
- 20:30Speaker 1: years and then it's going to fall apart. And here
- 20:33Speaker 1: the Patriots, I just I still skew younger. I'd still
- 20:37Speaker 1: rather them go out and pay a little bit more
- 20:39Speaker 1: to go after a younger player and somebody that can
- 20:42Speaker 1: be here for the next five years instead of someone
- 20:44Speaker 1: that's Is it worth twenty million dollars in a second
- 20:47Speaker 1: round pick to see if Max your guy, because if
- 20:51Speaker 1: you bring him in, there's no excuses. Yeah, right, Yeah,
- 20:54Speaker 1: I don't even know if it's a second round pick. Yeah,
- 20:57Speaker 1: I don't even know it turns though. Yeah, I don't
- 21:00Speaker 1: even know if I would take a second round pick
- 21:01Speaker 1: or whatever it is it worth twenty million dollars to
- 21:04Speaker 1: make sure that you know what they'll do it like
- 21:07Speaker 1: that Elijah more trade that that Evan just mentioned. They'll, right,
- 21:10Speaker 1: they'll trade a third and get a fifth back or
- 21:12Speaker 1: something like that, just to see exactly what you gave
- 21:15Speaker 1: up for it. Right, But the second round pick, I
- 21:18Speaker 1: think if they had a second round pick on the
- 21:20Speaker 1: table for Hopkins, he's already be traded. I don't think
- 21:22Speaker 1: they're getting those types of offers for him. I think
- 21:24Speaker 1: they're getting more offers like Paul just mentioned. You know,
- 21:27Speaker 1: let's moved down one hundred and fifty spots in the
- 21:30Speaker 1: middle rounds and get Hopkins or even the deal that
- 21:33Speaker 1: that Brandon cook Scott. I think he's a better player
- 21:35Speaker 1: than Brandon Cooks. But is he three rounds better than
- 21:39Speaker 1: Brandon Cooks? Probably not. So I think maybe a fourth
- 21:42Speaker 1: round pick in this year and maybe you give him
- 21:46Speaker 1: a pick next year or two or something like that.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I think that might get it done. All right, I've
- 21:50Speaker 1: been ordered by management to give away more T shirts.
- 21:54Speaker 1: You are man, Yeah, So we have the Patriots on
- 21:59Speaker 1: filtered T shirts. And the way we've been doing it
- 22:01Speaker 1: is giving out trivia questions that are related to the show,
- 22:05Speaker 1: and the first person who emails the correct answer to
- 22:09Speaker 1: web radio at Pagris dot com wins the T shirt.
- 22:13Speaker 1: We'll do a few of those today. So let's do
- 22:16Speaker 1: one right now. So it's the first correct answer that
- 22:20Speaker 1: comes in, So get ready by your phone or your keypad.
- 22:24Speaker 1: And this first one's really easy, so I expect everyone
- 22:29Speaker 1: to have the answer. But so now it's a race
- 22:32Speaker 1: to see who can get the answer in first. You
- 22:34Speaker 1: should do that, stick to the easy ones. That's a
- 22:36Speaker 1: good idea. So this is the first you ready, Matt Ready,
- 22:39Speaker 1: first person with the correct answer to web radio at
- 22:42Speaker 1: Patrice dot com. What was bighead? And Fred's epic argument
- 22:46Speaker 1: at the draft about what was bighead and Fred's epic
- 22:52Speaker 1: argument at the draft about first correct answer, let's see
- 22:57Speaker 1: it embarrassment. Yeah, so, uh, Evan, can you imagine they
- 23:02Speaker 1: argued for so long on this particular night that even
- 23:06Speaker 1: I was disinterested? Think about that. There was an argument
- 23:10Speaker 1: going on that I really had no interest in After
- 23:12Speaker 1: a while. Are you sure? I just kept going to
- 23:14Speaker 1: like Google, Yah, and I would read stuff like I
- 23:17Speaker 1: was the you know, the guy that wasn't just toss.
- 23:21Speaker 1: You can stop someone already got it. You can stop
- 23:23Speaker 1: with the entries. Who was the first one? Matt Jason
- 23:28Speaker 1: moose Day and Nappa? What what do you say? Jay
- 23:32Speaker 1: from Napa, Roma from Nappa? Okay, Jay from Napa. And
- 23:36Speaker 1: of course the answer is do rivers have tides? And
- 23:41Speaker 1: that this draft night argument, I philip rivers. You guys
- 23:46Speaker 1: are just talking about players of water at least at
- 23:49Speaker 1: the very least like they're talking about This was inside
- 23:52Speaker 1: the draft party as well, and they're screaming at each
- 23:55Speaker 1: other and I think I'm pretty sure Andy dropped an Yeah,
- 23:58Speaker 1: he dropped an F bomb? Yeah to actually yeah, So
- 24:03Speaker 1: that that's the answer. Okay, so we have one winner,
- 24:05Speaker 1: we'll do another, so they're not going back and forth ever.
- 24:07Speaker 1: And all I'm doing is like googling, like do rivers
- 24:09Speaker 1: have tides? And I'd be like, you know, and then
- 24:11Speaker 1: they would be like a little brick, and I go
- 24:13Speaker 1: rivers are said to have? And then you would you
- 24:16Speaker 1: know how like on the internet you can find exactly
- 24:19Speaker 1: what you want either way, so I would read it
- 24:21Speaker 1: exactly both ways, and then I'd just like going. I'd
- 24:25Speaker 1: go and get it like a Sunday come back. You
- 24:27Speaker 1: know what side of the debate was spread on that
- 24:30Speaker 1: they don't they don't and what he said they do well,
- 24:33Speaker 1: tidal marshes do. But you know, like if you're close
- 24:35Speaker 1: to the ocean and you're fed by obviously the ocean
- 24:38Speaker 1: affects the level. But if you're a river that further
- 24:42Speaker 1: away from the ocean, you don't have a tide. It's
- 24:44Speaker 1: not a big enough body of water anyway. I don't
- 24:47Speaker 1: want to get into it, no, But I like Alex
- 24:49Speaker 1: knows everything, so I figured that you would jim in
- 24:51Speaker 1: and tell you you're wrong, that I would be on
- 24:53Speaker 1: friend side. I think tides are all with the moon
- 24:56Speaker 1: and the ocean. Rivers, they're all flowing to the same place. Yeah,
- 25:00Speaker 1: I don't know. Like, if you're close to the if
- 25:01Speaker 1: you're within a mile of the ocean and the ocean
- 25:04Speaker 1: feeds into you, obviously it will affect that body of water.
- 25:08Speaker 1: But if you're like, you know, good stuff, you know,
- 25:11Speaker 1: how do you explain whitewater rafting? Then that's current. That's
- 25:15Speaker 1: not a tide. That's that's current. I need to go
- 25:18Speaker 1: back to I think of it where I was. If
- 25:22Speaker 1: you're going fishing and the ocean, if you're going fishing
- 25:27Speaker 1: the river, you're not thinking about low tide, is okay?
- 25:31Speaker 1: I see you're That's my logic. At least I was
- 25:33Speaker 1: playing the role of Evan that night. I was breaking
- 25:35Speaker 1: down the cornerback. Yeah. Yeah, as you can imagine, the
- 25:38Speaker 1: first night of the draft is like my Super Bowl.
- 25:39Speaker 1: So if this was going on while Evan would have
- 25:44Speaker 1: walked out, Yeah, he would have been so mad. He
- 25:47Speaker 1: already read just on it was one of the funniest
- 25:51Speaker 1: things that I've been involved. He would have walked out
- 25:53Speaker 1: and started his own podcast like wow, Like, okay, they
- 25:56Speaker 1: don't want to talk about doesn't have a tide. You
- 25:58Speaker 1: guys are morons? This whoa alright? Alright now on the
- 26:05Speaker 1: voice of reason, God, Alex relax over it, God down,
- 26:09Speaker 1: all right, we'll do another one, uh a little later. Um.
- 26:14Speaker 1: I have a little bit of a theory that I
- 26:15Speaker 1: want to throw out on the whole Jalen Mills thing. Ye,
- 26:18Speaker 1: do you think it's possible? And I have no information
- 26:21Speaker 1: on this whatsoever, which is generally how I conduct all
- 26:23Speaker 1: my business. Um, last week they had Tailor wrap in, Yes, right,
- 26:29Speaker 1: do you think that maybe that those two things are related,
- 26:32Speaker 1: like we're gonna release you, We're gonna bring in Taylor Rap. Now,
- 26:35Speaker 1: what I don't know is maybe I think there's definitely
- 26:38Speaker 1: a correlation between the two. Exactly what it is I
- 26:41Speaker 1: think is open for interpretation, depending on how you look
- 26:44Speaker 1: at it. I think it may have been we're gonna
- 26:47Speaker 1: release you. I'm gonna bring this guy into talk to
- 26:51Speaker 1: try to pressure him into or insurance redoing the thing
- 26:54Speaker 1: if he does get a good deal. The other part
- 26:57Speaker 1: of the whole, they wanted to release him, and they
- 26:59Speaker 1: wanted Rap to replace them, and they could make a
- 27:01Speaker 1: deal with Rap. That's the part that I that's where
- 27:03Speaker 1: I feel it falls and I get but I think
- 27:06Speaker 1: there's a relationship there cryptic tweet or a cryptic Instagram
- 27:11Speaker 1: story really quickly after the season ended, about something to
- 27:15Speaker 1: do with not being where he's not wanted. I read
- 27:19Speaker 1: into it a little bit at the time, and talking
- 27:21Speaker 1: to some people always dangerous when you talk to people.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I don't think the team was all that happy with
- 27:28Speaker 1: the amount of time he missed at the end of
- 27:29Speaker 1: the year with a growing problem. Yeah, I mean, I
- 27:32Speaker 1: that's that's because I think we all question what was
- 27:36Speaker 1: going on there, similar to how we brought up with
- 27:39Speaker 1: Damien Harris the other I wouldn't be surprised if they
- 27:41Speaker 1: felt the same way about Harris because Jalen Mills, when
- 27:44Speaker 1: we were out in Arizona that we could practice, He's
- 27:48Speaker 1: out there for one day and all of a sudden
- 27:50Speaker 1: we never see him again. It's like so that one
- 27:53Speaker 1: day of and I'm not saying that he you know,
- 27:55Speaker 1: but that one day a practice, all of a sudden,
- 27:57Speaker 1: he's some of my things completely whacked. Some of them,
- 28:00Speaker 1: you know, probably have some merit. I just don't know.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Like I said, was their plan to stick with Mills
- 28:06Speaker 1: all along, but they wanted him to take a year
- 28:08Speaker 1: off his contract, which I think that's basically all that
- 28:11Speaker 1: ended up happening, right, Yes, it's roughly the same. Yeah,
- 28:13Speaker 1: for total values, roughly the same. But he lost a year. Yeah,
- 28:18Speaker 1: And I don't know why or why that would or
- 28:20Speaker 1: wouldn't be advantageous to the team, or if it was, no,
- 28:25Speaker 1: we want to replace you with Taylor Rap, and we
- 28:28Speaker 1: weren't able to get that done. So oh hey, Jalen,
- 28:31Speaker 1: how don't you come back here? Yeah? That was my
- 28:33Speaker 1: read on it was that Taylor Rap, I think is
- 28:36Speaker 1: a pretty good player. I like him, and I think
- 28:38Speaker 1: he's going to get multiple years and maybe some guaranteed money.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I liked him coming out of college. Yeah, And I
- 28:43Speaker 1: don't think that they were willing to go there with
- 28:46Speaker 1: Taylor Rap. I think that they approached it similar to
- 28:49Speaker 1: with Kaski, who if he's going to take a one
- 28:51Speaker 1: year deal and kind of fall into our lap, then
- 28:53Speaker 1: we're all for it. But to give him multiple years
- 28:56Speaker 1: to give him some guaranteed cash, I don't think they
- 28:58Speaker 1: wanted to do that. And I think we'll find out
- 29:00Speaker 1: in the coming days that Taylor Rap signed I SENTI
- 29:02Speaker 1: decent deal. I think he went to since he in
- 29:05Speaker 1: the same day, um that he was like maybe like, yeah,
- 29:09Speaker 1: next day. Then they signed Nick Scott, his teammate with
- 29:12Speaker 1: the Rams, so they signed to Safety. So I don't
- 29:15Speaker 1: know if they're going to be in his market still,
- 29:17Speaker 1: but that's my my read on it too, is that
- 29:20Speaker 1: they wanted Rap but it didn't work out. Yeah, I
- 29:23Speaker 1: don't know. It could also be that they said, yeah,
- 29:25Speaker 1: go find a better deal in the meantime, they interview
- 29:28Speaker 1: Rap because what if he does get a good deal,
- 29:31Speaker 1: we need a guy. And you know, it didn't work out,
- 29:34Speaker 1: so they brought him back. But well, it's definitely correlated,
- 29:38Speaker 1: there's no doubt. Yeah, there's I'm not sure that that might.
- 29:43Speaker 1: I mean, I guess there's always ways around it. But
- 29:44Speaker 1: I don't think technically he was actually released now. I
- 29:49Speaker 1: think it goes down as a restructure. So I'm not
- 29:51Speaker 1: sure that other teams would have legally been able to
- 29:53Speaker 1: talk to him. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm not saying
- 29:58Speaker 1: that that means that he didn't talk to anybod right,
- 30:00Speaker 1: you know, I'm not naive. I just go back to
- 30:02Speaker 1: I remember I keep to Leib did some sort of
- 30:05Speaker 1: radio interview a couple of years ago, and he said
- 30:07Speaker 1: that Bill tried to convince him to come out of
- 30:09Speaker 1: retirement to cover tight ends. He was going to move
- 30:11Speaker 1: him inside and have him cover tight ends at the
- 30:13Speaker 1: end of his career, and it didn't he didn't end
- 30:16Speaker 1: up doing it. But I look at Jalen Mills and
- 30:18Speaker 1: I kind of think of the same thing of we're
- 30:20Speaker 1: probably going to go in a different direction at outside
- 30:22Speaker 1: corner and maybe draft somebody or something like that. But
- 30:24Speaker 1: if you want to come in and compete for a
- 30:27Speaker 1: tight end coverage role, then that's something that we would
- 30:30Speaker 1: like to have a little bit more more flexibility with.
- 30:33Speaker 1: All Right, eight five five PATS five hundred is the
- 30:36Speaker 1: ace ticket hut line web radio at Patriots dot com
- 30:38Speaker 1: is the email address. Let's check out the phone line
- 30:42Speaker 1: see what people were thinking. Patty's an agawam. What's up? Patty?
- 30:46Speaker 1: Hey everyone, how are you good? So? Freddy? Yeah, A
- 30:51Speaker 1: little interesting fact about the that whole rivers and tides argument.
- 30:55Speaker 1: I'm the one that prompted it, is that, right. I
- 30:59Speaker 1: called up on the draft night surprise surprise half in
- 31:02Speaker 1: the bag and I quoted some paper still lyrics and
- 31:06Speaker 1: um that prompted you guys to start the fight and
- 31:09Speaker 1: just kept going and going. It was It was awesome
- 31:11Speaker 1: that's good. That's it was epic. It was epic. It
- 31:15Speaker 1: goes on to this day, Patt, did you get a
- 31:17Speaker 1: T shirt just for that? Yeah? Um, And I just
- 31:21Speaker 1: wanted to, um wanted to get into a little bit
- 31:23Speaker 1: into the draft. But before I do, Freddy, I would
- 31:26Speaker 1: argue that you're one of the thirty most important guys.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Please God, no, no. If I'm not trying to this
- 31:32Speaker 1: isn't a very good organization. If if I'm on the list,
- 31:35Speaker 1: he's not. I can vouch for that. Yeah. Yeah, first
- 31:38Speaker 1: team paper, first team website, not the first team page.
- 31:41Speaker 1: And NFL dot com modeled their website after the first
- 31:44Speaker 1: page race website. That's all right. So I just wanted
- 31:49Speaker 1: to know if, um, did anybody any of you guys
- 31:52Speaker 1: catch the still Perry interview with Jeff Halfley from Boston College.
- 31:57Speaker 1: I watched some of it. I haven't been able to
- 31:59Speaker 1: talking about safe hours tomorrow. Yeah. Yeah, And Evan, I'm
- 32:05Speaker 1: kind of a prisoner in the moment like you were.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Like I heard him talk about saying just go on
- 32:09Speaker 1: and say how like he's never seen a player like him? Um,
- 32:13Speaker 1: not that like he's better than any of these, like
- 32:16Speaker 1: the players that they try to compare them too. But
- 32:19Speaker 1: I was just like, all right, he's the guy that
- 32:20Speaker 1: we got a draft at number fourteen, you know. Um,
- 32:24Speaker 1: but there's been too much attention on there's no way
- 32:27Speaker 1: we're going to draft him. It's my fault. Yeah, right right.
- 32:31Speaker 1: I'm hoping that cackle cornerback wide receiver, one of those
- 32:36Speaker 1: big glaring coals that we have. If we draft to
- 32:38Speaker 1: running back or tight end, I think I might just
- 32:41Speaker 1: check out. I might call in drunk and prompts another
- 32:43Speaker 1: argument on a draft night. Well, we know you'll you'll
- 32:45Speaker 1: call in drunk, Patty, because that's what you do. That's
- 32:48Speaker 1: why we love him. That's why we love you all guys.
- 32:52Speaker 1: All right, thanks for the call and the start of
- 32:54Speaker 1: the argument. Dan is in Vermont. What's up, Dan? Dan
- 33:00Speaker 1: in Vermont? Yeah, Dan's tapping into the maple syrup. Oh yeah,
- 33:07Speaker 1: I like that. Could call back Dan if you if
- 33:10Speaker 1: you want. Lots of emails coming in here on. Don't
- 33:14Speaker 1: you guys feel like it's everything is kind of at
- 33:16Speaker 1: a holding pattern until or in in less, something happens
- 33:20Speaker 1: with one of the like Judy or Hopkins. It's Hopkins, yeah,
- 33:24Speaker 1: because I don't the Judy stuff like I don't think
- 33:26Speaker 1: Denver actually wants to trade you. I don't think they
- 33:28Speaker 1: do either. I think if they get blown away with
- 33:30Speaker 1: an offer, they would they would move them. But it's
- 33:32Speaker 1: gonna take the Patriots putting the fourteenth overall pick on
- 33:35Speaker 1: the table, I think to actually get something done with
- 33:38Speaker 1: Denver on Judy. So I think it's Hopkins and maybe
- 33:41Speaker 1: a little bit um with the quarterbacks with Rogers and
- 33:43Speaker 1: Lamar kind of figuring out those situations. But yeah, I
- 33:47Speaker 1: definitely think that the receiver market, it's hopping Hopkins gotta
- 33:51Speaker 1: go somewhere, and then everything else will sort of sort
- 33:54Speaker 1: itself out. Speaking of people on interviews, Jake Bailey revealed
- 33:57Speaker 1: something that we suspected but but confirmed that the whole
- 34:02Speaker 1: thing was about the team thought he was physically ready
- 34:05Speaker 1: to come back and he didn't and that started it.
- 34:09Speaker 1: But then by not having him come back, there was
- 34:12Speaker 1: a lot of guarantees that you know, he lost out on,
- 34:15Speaker 1: and I guess there was some type of you know,
- 34:18Speaker 1: settlement that happened. So everything's all set now for him,
- 34:22Speaker 1: But it was an injury and then money that caused
- 34:26Speaker 1: that whole thing. Well, did you see what he blamed
- 34:28Speaker 1: it on? The squad rat squatting. Yeah, he said that
- 34:30Speaker 1: that he had never had squatted before. That was something
- 34:33Speaker 1: that they wanted him to do and he heard his
- 34:35Speaker 1: back on the squat. Let me tell you something, as
- 34:38Speaker 1: someone who did squad a lot, that's a dangerous exercise
- 34:42Speaker 1: if you don't do it right. And when I say
- 34:44Speaker 1: don't do it right, the slightest like you know, flaw
- 34:48Speaker 1: in your technique can really screw you up, both your
- 34:50Speaker 1: knees and your back. You know, it's and I you know,
- 34:53Speaker 1: I remember remember who was the old time trainer that
- 34:58Speaker 1: we had here, ron O'Neil no before him, uh, Johnny Parker,
- 35:03Speaker 1: Johnny Parker, I remember him telling me the squad is
- 35:06Speaker 1: the best exercise you can do. Everybody on this team squats.
- 35:10Speaker 1: I don't care what position they are. They squad on
- 35:12Speaker 1: this team. And I'm not sure that you know now,
- 35:15Speaker 1: with all the advances they've had in training and all that,
- 35:18Speaker 1: if that's necessarily correct too, Like I just wonder for
- 35:24Speaker 1: a punter, like why why hell bent on it? You know,
- 35:27Speaker 1: like with Gronk. This was a problem with Gronks back
- 35:30Speaker 1: and you can understand that. And he's a tight end.
- 35:31Speaker 1: He needs to and he had a bad back coming
- 35:33Speaker 1: into the into the league. I just wonder about, you know,
- 35:37Speaker 1: a punter, and and that's you know, that's Jake Bailey
- 35:41Speaker 1: side of the story too. And I'm you know, I'm
- 35:43Speaker 1: not naive enough to know to not like there's another
- 35:46Speaker 1: side of the story. I thought it was interesting that
- 35:49Speaker 1: he kind of let off his comments that he's talked
- 35:51Speaker 1: to Bill about it and they've agreed to talk about it,
- 35:54Speaker 1: which to me is kind of counter to you know,
- 35:58Speaker 1: like we still haven't heard Malcolm Butler talk about why
- 36:00Speaker 1: he didn't play like clearly they had. He's talking about it.
- 36:03Speaker 1: If somebody about it, I don't know if he'll probably
- 36:05Speaker 1: won't do it, but I think that he's okay with
- 36:08Speaker 1: talking about it, do you know what I mean? Which
- 36:11Speaker 1: I think was kind of different. I don't necessarily blame
- 36:14Speaker 1: anybody in the situation, but I mean, it is unfortunate
- 36:18Speaker 1: that you couldn't sort of figure out a way, and
- 36:21Speaker 1: I think that might that might explain that the drop off,
- 36:26Speaker 1: if it was he says it was affecting his accuracy
- 36:29Speaker 1: with his kicking and whatnot, and if he didn't feel
- 36:33Speaker 1: as confident in his back, I could see that that's
- 36:37Speaker 1: such a mental thing. Yeah, those specialists. Yeah, you know,
- 36:40Speaker 1: Bill always likens it to a golf swing and something's
- 36:42Speaker 1: wrong with your technique. It gets in your head. It's hard,
- 36:45Speaker 1: it's hard to correct it. Uh. Back at the phones,
- 36:48Speaker 1: Anthony is in South Carolina? What's up, Anthony? Hey? Uh?
- 36:54Speaker 1: Two questions, Myles Brian. I really don't understand that resign
- 37:00Speaker 1: because every time moleson he was getting beat and basically
- 37:03Speaker 1: every game. And uh, number two, what are all the
- 37:08Speaker 1: chances of getting like either d hop or going in
- 37:11Speaker 1: the draft for a number one receiver because Jerry Judy
- 37:15Speaker 1: I don't look at him as as a number one receiver. Yeah. Well, first,
- 37:20Speaker 1: Miles Bryant, I mean, is he is? Like I know
- 37:24Speaker 1: he was a lightning rod because he was involved in
- 37:27Speaker 1: some key plays on the bad side. But what was
- 37:30Speaker 1: he that bad? No? Yeah, I know nobody wants to
- 37:33Speaker 1: hear that short and no. It kills me. It breaks
- 37:36Speaker 1: my heart to hear people talk about Miles Bryant the
- 37:38Speaker 1: way that they do. That's the hardest, Yeah to me,
- 37:41Speaker 1: not physically. Slock corner might be the hardest position to
- 37:45Speaker 1: play in the league because the receiver has a two
- 37:47Speaker 1: way go he can go in, he can go out,
- 37:49Speaker 1: he can go up the field, Like you have to
- 37:51Speaker 1: cover everything when you play on the boundary, you can
- 37:54Speaker 1: use the sideline as a defender, right, so you know
- 37:56Speaker 1: that you have him pushed up against the sideline, you
- 37:59Speaker 1: don't have to worry about certain routes with the slot
- 38:02Speaker 1: like that's he's got total freedom in there to do
- 38:06Speaker 1: whatever he wants and you've got to cover him. Come
- 38:08Speaker 1: to have those swevel hips, right and so that that's
- 38:10Speaker 1: that's a tough spot to fill. And I think any
- 38:14Speaker 1: think we should keep and get like outside, Yeah, they do.
- 38:21Speaker 1: They do need to. Yeah, I mean Myles Bryant as
- 38:23Speaker 1: an outside corner. No, that's it. I don't think you
- 38:26Speaker 1: want that. But like the thing is, as Patriots fans,
- 38:29Speaker 1: we have to remember that every team in the league
- 38:32Speaker 1: can pass for the most part. There's very few teams
- 38:34Speaker 1: that you know, Patriots were one last year. But you know,
- 38:37Speaker 1: this is a passing league. It's hard to stop teams
- 38:41Speaker 1: from you know, completing passes in this league. And if
- 38:45Speaker 1: you take the third or fourth or fifth corner on
- 38:48Speaker 1: any team, they're not going to be that good, you know,
- 38:51Speaker 1: compared to the other teams. Passing game. It's it's just
- 38:55Speaker 1: hard to have a whole roster of really good corners
- 38:59Speaker 1: in this league, you know, especially with how under the
- 39:02Speaker 1: good corners so easy to point to him. Yeah, the
- 39:05Speaker 1: good corners, but they get made to look bad. Yeah
- 39:08Speaker 1: they Yeah, Yeah, I would agree with that, But I
- 39:11Speaker 1: would also say that most teams don't resign those guys. Now,
- 39:14Speaker 1: I'm okay with a restricted tender, you got the lowest
- 39:17Speaker 1: tender whatever. Next year, If they're looking to extend him,
- 39:22Speaker 1: I think that would be a curious Now, I think
- 39:24Speaker 1: I agree with you there. I think he's a he's
- 39:27Speaker 1: a dimebacker, Like, he's a guy that when you have
- 39:28Speaker 1: six seven dbs on the field and you need somebody else,
- 39:31Speaker 1: you bring them on. And I think that their hope
- 39:33Speaker 1: is that between Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones, those guys
- 39:36Speaker 1: are your nickels. Like, those guys are the guys that
- 39:38Speaker 1: are going to play in the slot most of the
- 39:39Speaker 1: time next year. And Miles's depth right, and that's where
- 39:42Speaker 1: he belongs. I think the last couple of years he's
- 39:44Speaker 1: had to play a lot more than than his skill set,
- 39:47Speaker 1: probably for flat Yeah, and I just don't like having
- 39:50Speaker 1: to start to pay significant money for depth. Yeah, you know,
- 39:55Speaker 1: so like he'll he's fine on that. What was it
- 39:58Speaker 1: like three? Three? It's two, and yeah it was that's
- 40:02Speaker 1: that's fine, but right at first refusal tax, I think
- 40:04Speaker 1: it's like two if he so, if he ends up
- 40:06Speaker 1: getting up over you know, like five million a year,
- 40:10Speaker 1: which is what some lower end slot guys like. I
- 40:14Speaker 1: don't want that. He's not good enough for that, but
- 40:16Speaker 1: what they're paying him, I just as soon have him.
- 40:18Speaker 1: He knows the system, he knows the coaches. The coaches
- 40:20Speaker 1: know him, they know his strengths, they know his weaknesses.
- 40:23Speaker 1: And I would say depending yeah, I would also say
- 40:26Speaker 1: depending on the draft we talked about and Evans, Evan
- 40:28Speaker 1: and Mike have talked about the cornerback class in depth
- 40:31Speaker 1: and how talented it is. If you can hit in
- 40:35Speaker 1: the draft. His roster spots not a guarantee. Don't forget.
- 40:38Speaker 1: The restricted free agent tender is not guaranteed. Even if
- 40:42Speaker 1: he signs it, you can cut him nothing. Yeah, thanks, Anthony.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Your other question was about d Hop. I mean, well,
- 40:51Speaker 1: Judy is not a number one receiver, which on this
- 40:54Speaker 1: thing right now, he's probably hasn't proven to be one.
- 40:58Speaker 1: I think with Judy, you're more banking on potential and
- 41:01Speaker 1: what he's actually done in the league. But I think
- 41:03Speaker 1: that's fair with Anthon, But don't you think on this team, easily,
- 41:06Speaker 1: he'd be the most talented guy they have. And at
- 41:09Speaker 1: that point, do you get rid of Parker? Do you
- 41:11Speaker 1: have trade him? You know, I think him or Born
- 41:14Speaker 1: would certainly be two guys that are maybe tradeable pieces
- 41:17Speaker 1: I've thrown out there, maybe including them in the trades
- 41:20Speaker 1: to give Denver receiver that can play right away back,
- 41:24Speaker 1: you know, so they're not making such a huge, huge
- 41:27Speaker 1: hole for themselves. Judy, if Jerry Judy was in this draft,
- 41:30Speaker 1: he'd be the number one receiver on the board. Like
- 41:32Speaker 1: he's he's got that kind of talent. Hasn't necessarily all
- 41:36Speaker 1: came together for him in Denver, But I think it's
- 41:39Speaker 1: a combination of things. Like they've had multiple head coaches,
- 41:42Speaker 1: they've had multiple quarterbacks, multiple coordinators, and he's been injured
- 41:46Speaker 1: a couple of times. So there's a lot going on
- 41:49Speaker 1: there in Denver. But in terms of potential, I mean,
- 41:51Speaker 1: I I just for kicks, I threw up some Mac
- 41:56Speaker 1: Jones to Judy stuff from Alabama, and you just watched
- 41:59Speaker 1: him at at Alabama in that Bowl game against Michigan
- 42:02Speaker 1: in twenty nineteen, and it's it's stupid, like they couldn't
- 42:06Speaker 1: tackle again. He was the best player in the field, right,
- 42:08Speaker 1: And I like him a lot. I liked him coming out.
- 42:11Speaker 1: I know that sometimes you get sort of wild and
- 42:14Speaker 1: you're like, well, you know, he has all these physical gifts,
- 42:16Speaker 1: but how good of a football player is he? I
- 42:18Speaker 1: think he's a really good football player too, at least
- 42:20Speaker 1: he was. Yeah. I think there's been a lot of
- 42:22Speaker 1: stuff going on in Denver, and I think he kind
- 42:25Speaker 1: of finished strong last year too. He did, so that's
- 42:28Speaker 1: what their GM told me at the combine. I think
- 42:30Speaker 1: it'd be crazy if if Sean Payton didn't look at
- 42:33Speaker 1: him as a guy that he wants to make sure
- 42:35Speaker 1: he uses uses the year to figure out and you
- 42:38Speaker 1: know you can you can take the fifty year option
- 42:40Speaker 1: and then figure out how to deal with that later
- 42:43Speaker 1: two if you want, right, and and not to like
- 42:44Speaker 1: flex the whole film thing, but I watched all of
- 42:46Speaker 1: his catches from last year, and I mean the tape
- 42:50Speaker 1: says tells a different story than the box score, Like
- 42:52Speaker 1: the guy's really difficult to cover. You know, he ran
- 42:55Speaker 1: a sluggo on Jalen Ramsey where Ramsey just completely blit
- 42:59Speaker 1: on the and just off the screen right and he
- 43:02Speaker 1: just you know, broke him at the top of the route.
- 43:04Speaker 1: He's got he's got number one receiver film. He just
- 43:07Speaker 1: hasn't put the production together yet. So if you can
- 43:10Speaker 1: get the whole package out of him, he's gonna be
- 43:13Speaker 1: I mean, he's close to a thousand yards last year anyways,
- 43:15Speaker 1: he was nine and change. So I think a healthy
- 43:18Speaker 1: Jerry Judy is a thousand yard receiver easily. Yeah. And
- 43:21Speaker 1: I thought it was interesting listening to some of the
- 43:22Speaker 1: free age. I think mcglinchy McGlinchey signed with Denver right Chicago,
- 43:27Speaker 1: no where. I thought it was Denver Denver, so it
- 43:30Speaker 1: was someone one of the higher profile free agents who
- 43:33Speaker 1: signed with Denver was talking and just about you know,
- 43:36Speaker 1: Russell Wilson's a Hall of Fame talent and Sean Payton's
- 43:39Speaker 1: going to get the most out of him. Sounds like
- 43:41Speaker 1: something would say, but this is like the kinds of
- 43:44Speaker 1: things that I think if you're Denver, you have to
- 43:47Speaker 1: bank on that, Like you you can't just assume that
- 43:51Speaker 1: Russell Wilson's a lost cost. You have to beyond hope
- 43:56Speaker 1: think that you can get something out of that contract
- 43:58Speaker 1: and figure it out. So I think Jerry Judy would
- 44:01Speaker 1: be a guy you'd want to have help Russell Wilson
- 44:04Speaker 1: out a little bit. So do have a little bit
- 44:06Speaker 1: of not player news, but Albert ber just tweeted out
- 44:10Speaker 1: that he knows Joe Judge's role for the Patriots next season.
- 44:16Speaker 1: He is claiming that Joe Judge will be an assistant
- 44:19Speaker 1: head coach with the Patriots in twenty three, with personnel elements,
- 44:23Speaker 1: some parallels to Matt Patricia's twenty one role. And then
- 44:26Speaker 1: he said on the field, he'll be working with special teams. Okay, good, great, Yeah, yeah,
- 44:34Speaker 1: got no problem with that, So Football Senior Football Advisor. Basically,
- 44:37Speaker 1: it's interesting though, because we were, you know, we were
- 44:40Speaker 1: thinking that oh, maybe Gerard Mayo would get that assistant
- 44:43Speaker 1: head coach position, but apparently not. Yeah. So do we
- 44:48Speaker 1: know what grards you know, title will be this year?
- 44:53Speaker 1: We don't. We don't have any confirmation on that yet. Okay,
- 44:56Speaker 1: that's interesting though. You know, I'm glad that he's helping
- 44:59Speaker 1: out with special teams. Adam is in Pennsylvania, what's up, Adam, Hey,
- 45:05Speaker 1: everyone has to go on good. That's good, So unpopular
- 45:11Speaker 1: opinion here, but I like the moves that we've made
- 45:15Speaker 1: so far on the offensive side of the ball this offseason.
- 45:18Speaker 1: And I know people have been calling in complaining that
- 45:21Speaker 1: we haven't made any splash signing, but I don't think
- 45:24Speaker 1: that's a bad thing at this point. And to me,
- 45:27Speaker 1: a lot of these signings that we have they feel
- 45:31Speaker 1: a lot more calculated. It feels like O'Brien has a
- 45:35Speaker 1: vision as to how he wants to build and design
- 45:37Speaker 1: this offense, and it looks like he's willing to be
- 45:40Speaker 1: patient and sort of intentional with how he builds up
- 45:44Speaker 1: to that vision. So you know, I see him bringing
- 45:48Speaker 1: in an explosive yards after catch guy like Juju and
- 45:51Speaker 1: signing a guy like this that he who's a more
- 45:54Speaker 1: athletic and dynamic tight end. I see those as pieces
- 46:00Speaker 1: that are building to that bigger picture that O'Brien is
- 46:03Speaker 1: trying to create to produce a faster and more explosive
- 46:08Speaker 1: offense in twenty twenty three. And this is in contrast
- 46:12Speaker 1: to the twenty twenty one free agency spend that we
- 46:15Speaker 1: had that year, where it felt like the Pats came
- 46:19Speaker 1: out and they were like, well, it's free agency, we
- 46:22Speaker 1: have a craft a ton of money. Let's just go
- 46:24Speaker 1: out there and get these top of the market guys
- 46:26Speaker 1: and then we'll figure out how this all fits together.
- 46:30Speaker 1: And I know, as a fan that was super exciting,
- 46:32Speaker 1: but just two years removed, I wish we wouldn't had done.
- 46:35Speaker 1: It didn't feel like we had a plan in place,
- 46:38Speaker 1: and you know, two years later, we're kind of cleaning
- 46:41Speaker 1: up the debris from that free agency spend that offseason.
- 46:45Speaker 1: So I don't know, this offseason, it's been pretty unsexy
- 46:49Speaker 1: so far, but I just feel a lot more competent
- 46:52Speaker 1: in how the Pats have been approaching it, and I
- 46:55Speaker 1: think there are still some other moves to be made.
- 46:57Speaker 1: I think we do need to acquire another top wide
- 47:02Speaker 1: receiver to kind of round out the offense. But just overall,
- 47:06Speaker 1: I like the way that we're heading with a free
- 47:10Speaker 1: agency so far and them. I'm willing to be patient
- 47:13Speaker 1: to see how it shakes out there over the next
- 47:15Speaker 1: few weeks. But those fair enough at him now, Yeah,
- 47:20Speaker 1: thanks for the call. I mean, I would agree. I
- 47:22Speaker 1: think their approach so far has been methodical. You know, um,
- 47:28Speaker 1: you know, one thing I pushed back, like the whole thing,
- 47:30Speaker 1: you know, two years ago when they went after it.
- 47:33Speaker 1: I don't know if that really set the team back,
- 47:35Speaker 1: Like were there guys that were available that year that
- 47:38Speaker 1: they missed on? You know, I don't think so. You know,
- 47:42Speaker 1: now the guys didn't work out, but I don't know
- 47:43Speaker 1: if that really set back the organization, you know, which
- 47:47Speaker 1: just it was just it was short lived, Like it
- 47:50Speaker 1: just wasn't the twenty one season, wasn't it just it
- 47:53Speaker 1: never it never panned out the way we hoped it would, right,
- 47:56Speaker 1: you know. But I think that it was a different
- 47:59Speaker 1: situation too. I think that they were so they had
- 48:02Speaker 1: no competition really, but there was they had no talent
- 48:05Speaker 1: they had the roster had been completely reset in twenty
- 48:08Speaker 1: and they had to go out and get some NFL players. Yeah, um,
- 48:12Speaker 1: and yeah, I would agree with most that it probably
- 48:16Speaker 1: was at disappointing hall for the money they spent, they
- 48:18Speaker 1: didn't get the bang for the buck. Yeah, but we've
- 48:20Speaker 1: talked about understand why they did it. But we've talked
- 48:23Speaker 1: about it on this show before. You know, it's history.
- 48:27Speaker 1: Says like teams that go out and have multiple free
- 48:30Speaker 1: agent signings likes it not works for a year and
- 48:34Speaker 1: then they tail off. That's exactly what happened with the Patriots.
- 48:37Speaker 1: And not every one of the signings always work. You know,
- 48:40Speaker 1: there's like half of them work. You know, I remember
- 48:44Speaker 1: us saying that at the time, like if half of
- 48:46Speaker 1: these guys work, it'll be okay. Yeah, And it's exactly
- 48:50Speaker 1: what Paul said. You get a shot in the arm
- 48:52Speaker 1: for a season, you know, you see your win total
- 48:54Speaker 1: go up for a season, and then you you come
- 48:56Speaker 1: back down to earth, you know, as the life of
- 48:59Speaker 1: those contracts continuing. And I'm going to stunt you here.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Part of the reason for that, I think is the quarterback.
- 49:05Speaker 1: Well sad you're gonna say it. I was going to. Actually,
- 49:09Speaker 1: this is why it's going to be stunning for you.
- 49:11Speaker 1: It's the salary cap. Because when you go out and
- 49:13Speaker 1: sign big money free agents, most of the time you
- 49:16Speaker 1: set it up so early on the contract is very
- 49:20Speaker 1: team friendly, and then the big money comes due and
- 49:23Speaker 1: that prevention from doing anything else. That's interesting you said
- 49:26Speaker 1: that just reminds you of something I read yesterday from
- 49:28Speaker 1: Pro Football Talk on the Aaron Rodgers situation. That everyone
- 49:32Speaker 1: thinks that Green Bay has the leverage over the Jets.
- 49:35Speaker 1: But that's not according to Pro Football Talk, that's not
- 49:38Speaker 1: true because if the Jets walk over him the table
- 49:40Speaker 1: and leave green like he's going to count sixty million
- 49:44Speaker 1: against the cap. It's a big number. I mean, that's
- 49:47Speaker 1: that's an example of pushing these things to the future. Well,
- 49:51Speaker 1: it's not pushing it to the future. That's his salary
- 49:54Speaker 1: only because changes is salary only because it's going to
- 49:58Speaker 1: cost the Jets that too. But the difference is it's
- 50:01Speaker 1: sixty million for a guy who's not gonna play for you. Yeah,
- 50:04Speaker 1: that's the difference. Well yeah, but that's and they don't
- 50:06Speaker 1: want to pay him. But the Jets aren't gonna they're
- 50:08Speaker 1: gonna that. They're not gonna pay him sixty million a year.
- 50:12Speaker 1: Oh yes they are. Oh no, they're not. I don't
- 50:14Speaker 1: know what it's gonna cost them the cap thread, but
- 50:16Speaker 1: they're going to pay him sixty million. That's his base salary. No,
- 50:20Speaker 1: they're gonna they're gonna redo that. They're gonna redo they're not.
- 50:24Speaker 1: And if you're gonna redo it, you're not paying them
- 50:26Speaker 1: less than that. He hain't taking it, don't retire. Why
- 50:29Speaker 1: is it gonna take less there's no way any team
- 50:33Speaker 1: would pay right now any quarterback sixty million dollars. I'd
- 50:36Speaker 1: pay Patrick Mahomes sixty millions. Can you please help me out.
- 50:40Speaker 1: I wanted you to admit that the twenty one Patriots
- 50:43Speaker 1: are better because of Mac, but you wouldn't go there.
- 50:45Speaker 1: That's what you thought. I was gonna be stunned with.
- 50:47Speaker 1: I'd see. I actually think just the opposite they put
- 50:49Speaker 1: in if Cam Newton, it would have looked totally different. Yeah,
- 50:55Speaker 1: but Cam Newton would have been better in twenty one
- 50:57Speaker 1: with talent that he had around him than they would
- 50:59Speaker 1: have been. Would they have been a ten win team
- 51:01Speaker 1: with Cam Newton? Acrodible because I don't think Mac won
- 51:05Speaker 1: a lot of games. Fred used to yell at me,
- 51:07Speaker 1: and I'm not surprised Fred yelled at me a lot
- 51:09Speaker 1: in twenty one. I don't think he won a lot
- 51:10Speaker 1: of games on his own. I understand that point. I
- 51:13Speaker 1: just think that the consistency that he had brought to
- 51:16Speaker 1: the table as a rookie, and sort of the baseline
- 51:18Speaker 1: performance that he brought, I think helped make sure that
- 51:22Speaker 1: that roster got what it should have gotten out of
- 51:25Speaker 1: the talent that it had. If that makes sense. All right,

- 1:00:50Speaker 1: Check out this snippet from the latest episode of Pats
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: from the Past with Devin and Jason mccordy. I can
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: only imagine what your mom thinks when she sees video
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: at the end of the Kansas City game, because when
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: I look at it, even we all stopped, I mean,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: I still get almost choked up about it when I
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: see it, because it's surreal. And here's two kids who
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: probably did that in your backyard or in the playground
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: at school and everything, and it happened. And I know
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: you got to close the deal because it would have
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: sucked if we done all that right. But how amazing
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: was that moment? Oh? It was awesome, and you said,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: we did it. Growing up, I can remember getting ready
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: for Sunday Pop Warner games and me and Dev would
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: go outside on the pavement and start throwing the ball
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: and we'd go over all of our plays that we
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: were going to run later on in the game, just
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: to prepare ourselves. And now from that moment waking up
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Sunday morning to now fast forwarding years later, now we're
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: waking up on a Sunday morning and we're walking into
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: a stadium getting ready to play in the Super Bowl.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: That he's done. This was his fifth time being in
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: this game. And I think the best moment wasn't on
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: the field after the game. It was in the low
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: chrome as we're going and we're passing around then FC
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Championship trophy and now we're talking about going to the game,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: And for me, it was so surreal. And I said
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: it when I was holding the trophy. This is the
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: first time I get to go to the game on
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: my own accord and I'm not hitting Dev up to
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: figure out the logistics and taking care of the family,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: but I'm actually getting invited to the game. So for me,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: it was truly special. Dev knows the Super Bowl in Houston.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: I never know the numbers the Super Bowl in Houston.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: I was one, yet they're all the same to me
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: other than fifty three. Try having to write about it. Yeah,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: I don't remember. Ever. I can only imagine the hardship
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: these guys go through having to write about Super Bowl.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: That's the prop tough life. That was Devin and Jason mccordy. Uh.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: They sat down for the Pats from the Past podcast
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: with No Socks and Paul and that'll be up on
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Patriots dot com. Do we have a date for when
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: that's dropping today? Matt tomorrow? I want to say it
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: came out yesterday already? Did come out? Come out? What
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: do I know? So that's avail I lived it on
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Patriots dot com or wherever you get your podcasts um
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: a little soon for you know, Patch from the Past.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: That's that we We joked with them a little bit
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: about that. But did you hear that you make hey
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: while the Sunshine? Devin played the role of Fred in that. Yeah,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: like I was, you know, like I am a hard
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: time keeping track of the Roman numerals too, and he's like,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: must be really hard writening on all the Super Bowls, right, good?
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: For him. He's he's sharp. It was perfect. Yeah. So
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: that's available on Patriots dot Com or Spotify or Apple
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: podcast wherever you get your podcasts. That's where we are.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: So good stuff. That's what number forty I think in
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: the number of pats thirty eight thirty eight a lot
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: of patch from So if you haven't already I remember, yeah,
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: if you haven't already subscribed to that podcast series, do so.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: A lot of catching up to do. There's a lot
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: of great stuff that they've done already. Efforting to get
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: a couple more done. Uh yeah, I've been texting back
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: and forth with uh yeah. So Alex has left us.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: She's gone to a charity event. Charity, yeah, a woman charity,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: A woman too, a woman in motion or what what
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: is it? What's it called? No, it's like women's a
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: women's in sports, women's seminar. No, but like this month?
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: What is this month? This month is is like international
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: international Women's month. That okay, all right, So she's gone
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: to something to do with that. So all right, so
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: I believe Tamara is actually moderating, moderate she's hosting it
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: round table good stuff. All right, let's get back to
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: the phones. They're loaded up Williams and Philam what's up
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: William Hey, what's going on with it? How are you
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: doing all right? I just want to just say a
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: couple of things. I just want to stay down first, Evan, Evan,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: I wasn't trying to be rude of me and anything
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: to you last week. I know you was. You was
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: kicking a lot of punches people. You've helped you hold
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: enough good though, Okay, But I wasn't trying to urge
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: the doing anything like that. Oh no, I didn't take
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: anything personally. Don't worry about it. What happened when I
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: wasn't here. You see to the callers that just called
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: it about about the corners and wanted thing that we
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: might need, uh corners, whennot just one thing. I think
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: we need two of them, and I think it's picked
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: was map because of that. We need it, just because
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: we need taller corners. You know, I'm tired of seeing
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: our little corners getting mossed by like you know pe Hagen,
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: uh Jamar Chase Digs. You know they can't hang with them.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: You know they were they supposed to do. You know
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: what I mean? Right, But what corners in the league
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: can hang with Jamar Chase. There's very few, you know,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: That's why he's Jamar Chase. Yeah, this is one thing
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: that I I think Alex and I are going to
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: differ on this on catch twenty two. And when we
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: disagree on something, it's like, oh, well, let's talk about it,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: because we've usually see I I on most things. And
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: I'm not feeling corner as big of a need in
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: the draft as maybe some other people are, because to me,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: they just need a bigger body that can play on
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: the outside. They can play some press coverage against the
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: t Higgins. But I don't think that they're in like
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: desperate need for corners. I think that the Jones the
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Joneses are pretty good corners. I just think that those
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: guys are all they're all smaller. Yeah, So it to me,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: it's not like this is a need that we need
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: to draft three corners and you give me one six
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: foot two corner that can play press on the outside
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: against the t Higgins, and I think they match up
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: pretty well in the other spots already. So but you
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: wouldn't be surprised if they draft a corner in the
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: first round. Right in the first round. I would be
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: a little bit, because it's just not. They don't typically
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: draft corners that high. So the highest corner that they've
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: ever drafted technically, if you want to count Devon as
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: a corner, is Devon. If you don't want to count
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Devon as a corner, then it's actually Rosey Dowling with
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: a thirty third over I'll pick in the draft. What
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: about the kid from Alabama years ago? Cyrus Jones? Second round?
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: Second round? The second the second round is their sweet
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: spot for defensive backs general, Absolutely true, So Devin Laundrey
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: list of bad picks in the second round defensive backs.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Devin was twenty seventh overall, and the highest defensive back
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: that they've ever taken is actually Brandon Merriweather I think
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: was twenty third or twenty fourth. So it's not he
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: was the opposite of Devon. They drafted him sort of
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: as a corner and made him a safety. They thought
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: he could do both. But yeah, they don't draft a
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: lot of a lot of secondary guys. First, No, can
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: I say two more things and I'm gonna I'll be
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: out your way. Um, Well, I like I like Zee Flowers, man,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: I think something about him. I don't know, I'm just
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: the way he moved, and he just he's just good man.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: He just looked really good. Well, he'll make our corners
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: look tall. True. And last f'm I just wanted, uh,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: you know, give a little pushback towards Hopkins. Though Hopkins
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: is better than anything on your team at this point. Everybody,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: well he's old and this then the third and blah
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: blah blah. Okay, so where did you see the wear
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: and tear? As far as last year, his quarterback got
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: got injured. So I mean he would have had a
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: hell of a season, you know what I mean. But
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: because of that, that was it. And you know, because
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: of its situation, his off field situation. Yeah, I was
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: gonna say he didn't have a hell of a season
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: because he had to miss the first six games. That
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: was on him. Right when he played, he was ridiculously productive. Yeah, right,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: And I get it. Jerry Judy, he's young and him
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: and Man have a connection off. But Jerry Judy is
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: still not a number one yet correct, Well, he would
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: be for the Patriots. Yeah, Okay, I ain't complaining if
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: we get him though, I'm not complaining at all. Trust
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: and to lead, the price for him is a lot
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: higher than Hopkins, right right, okay, Jeleman, take care and
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: next one. Thanks William. And I think there's some similarities
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: with the way the Patriots did um with Brandon Cooks,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: you know a lot of years ago with Judy, and
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: I think they traded for him. They picked I want
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: to say, they picked up the fifty year option and
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: they were still able to trade him for a first
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: round pick. Yeah, so they traded him for him in
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: year four, picked up the fifth year option, and then
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: traded him on the fifth year option. So okay, I
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: did remember that. Yeah, usually I don't, but so I
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: think it would be a similar kind of thing with Judy.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: You could trade for him, you could pick up the
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: fifty year option, and if you don't like you know
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: everything about it, you should still be able to move
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: on from him. Yeah. AJ's in the Bay Area. What's up,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: aj Aj? You're still there? No? Aj, Aj out? Not there? Okay,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: good job, Hardy. I don't know if this is the
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: same Anthony as before. What's he's gone too? Okay, we
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: cleared out the phones. Let's get to the emails. Multiple
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: busy signals. Yeah, I don't know what's going on. Let's
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: see Rob in San Diego via Connecticut has a what
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: if question? The Patriots have made some free agent acquisitions
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: which have increased talent, like Juju and perhaps Kisiki. If this,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: along with the O line moves and Robinson are the
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: totality of the free agent movement, are we feeling good
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: heading into the draft? Evan has stated there's no number
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: one receiver at our first draft spot. So let's assume
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: we pick a tackle or move down. Will that approach
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: bring enough talent to the roster to compete with Miami
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: and Buffalo and perhaps the Jets is developing a wide
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: receiver something we are confident in from the draft. Do
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: you disagree with that approach? Assuming it's what happens that
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: don't mind so drafting a receiver high and development so
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: if nothing else happens, you know, transaction wise until the draft.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: Are you okay going to the draft the way we
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: are okay with going into the draft the way we
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: are If they approached the draft, if they take the
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: draft seriously, like I'm just gonna put it that way,
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: because if they give us another cold strange in the
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: first round and then they're gonna be in trouble in
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: terms of roster talent. But if they actually go into
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: the draft, look at the knees that they have at
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: the top of the board, and addressed them accordingly, then yeah,
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: I mean you build through the draft. Like I'm a
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: staunch believer in that, and like it would be great
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: for them to go out and trade for Jerry Judy
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: or DeAndre Hopkins, and I'm for both moves, but ultimately,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: like those pillars, those franchise pillars are going to come
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: to the draft, They're not going to come via trade
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: of a thirty one year old wide receiver. I agree
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: with that, and I would echo everything about the draft
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: like that's how you get out of this mess. I
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: think that they've made some steps in that direction. I
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: think that they've had good draft. I don't want to
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: call these great drafts the way some of my colleagues do,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: but I think they've had some good production out of
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: the draft. Going on three years now, the last three drafts,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: I think you've gotten some good players in all three
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: of those drafts. Now, there's two parts of that. Youve
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: got to continue to develop them. These guys have to
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: continue to get better, and you have to retain the
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: ones that do get better. And the ones that you
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: want to build around. And this is where you get
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: back to that, like one hundred and some odd million
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: in cap space next year. I don't think that would
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: be a good thing. If they still have all that
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: cap space heading into next year, that means you know,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: left dagger left when you know you got you gotta
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: find a way to get these young guys and figure
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: out how to keep them. And that's how you want
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: to chew up some of your cap space. Now, I'll
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: set it up now because I know, I know I'll
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: get made fun of. I will also say, like, if
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: you do that, you haven't really done anything to get
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: yourself better. You're sort of status quo. And that's where
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: I would be with the question that you on your emailer.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: Right now, I think they need something else. I think
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: they need a significant piece, probably via trade too, for
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: me to say that, Okay, they're better than they were
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: last year on paper, you augment that with a really
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: good draft. Now, let's see if you can compete for
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: someone ahead of you. Right now, I think, like I
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: said on Tuesday, I think I can make an argument
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: that Juju is better than Myers. I can make an
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: argument that Kausiki is better than John who. I can
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: make an argument that Robinson's better than Damian Harris And
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: how much better does that? Bill O'Brien, that that's coaching,
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: I come on, but it means if it meant so
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: much last year, then it means something this year. Yeah,
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: But coaching I always go back to when it comes
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: to what do you have for players? But it makes
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: better players any better? It makes you better. We'll see
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: it does. The last half of twenty one, they weren't
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: any better than they were last year. Yeah, offensively they
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: had great coaching. We saw what bad coaching did. Good
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: coaching makes you better last year. I go back to
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: something that Bill always says about this, and that coaching
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: is your floor and the talent is the ceiling of
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: the team. So the coaching is going to be better
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: to the point where it's more representable. But that doesn't
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: make you compete with Buffalo, Like Bill, Bill Bryant, calling
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: calling plays isn't going to help you when Josh Allen
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: is just like it's twenty one, you couldn't compete with
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: Buffalo when you have Josh McDaniels. As you care, But
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: I thought it was funny you know, one of the
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: funny moments Devin's retirement ceremony was Bill talking about that
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: draft that got killed by a lot of the us
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: N Yeah, I don't think I put you on the email.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: The lowest, the lowest. The lowest grade they got was
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: a B minus, the lowest grade he loves. I thought
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: it was funny to lie. But here's the thing. That
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: draft was Devin and Croc the first two picks. Yeah,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: there's no guarantee that you'll ever hit like that again.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: But if I had some more confidence in their ability
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: to hit like that again, then I'd feel fine about
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: where they are in terms of the free agency stuff.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: But I just to Paul's point, I think their last
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: couple of drafts have been good. Good beat twenty one
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: to a lesser extent last year. I think twenty tw
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: twenty one with good, solid draft, right, But they're not.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: But they haven't gotten a Devin mccordy or a Rob
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: Gronkowski or a Dante high Tower. And I just looked
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: at it the other day, with high Tower and mccority
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: kind of retiring at the at the same time, that
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: core of Dynasty two point zero, as we all like
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: to call it, of Brady and Edelman in Gronkowski and
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: mccority and a high Tower and Chung. First of all,
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: they're all retired James White, which is sad. But secondly,
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: where did they get all those players? And that's when
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: the drafting started to struggle, a sort of fourteen fifteen ish, right,
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: that's when they started to have the little bit of
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: a drought in the draft. Right, that's why you were here.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: So I don't think you could just have a couple
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: of good drafts and say, Okay, we're back unless like
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: one of those guys that you really hit on turned
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: out to me Mac Jump, you know you can be back, right,
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: I mean, you know if if all of a sudden,
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: you know, becomes that deep, consistent threat. Okay, so now
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: that elevates, you know, a cold Strange becomes a side
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: solid guard for ten years. You know, good draft that
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: was not going to help. Yeah it's Mac, Like if
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Mac turned out to be a really good drafty, Like
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: if we're looking at Mac, but why they really nailed
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: back Cole Strange isn't gonna help you in bar Moore,
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: col Strange is not going to help you when you're
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: playing Buffalo and you have to put thirty five on
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: the board to beat Josh Allen. So not gonna help you, E.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: I would have been very upset with you yesterday. Why
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: with this co Cole Strange criticism. I hate it to
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: do it because it says just I'm listening to I
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: don't even would I would blame that person, but I
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: don't know who it was. He wasn't anywhere near as
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: bad he was made out to be. And this is
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: a media thing. They didn't like the pick of the
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: guard in the first round, and they just would destined
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: to make him fail. And I was like, the head
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: coach took him out of three different games that had
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: nothing to do with me. Right, I didn't take him
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: out because I don't like guards, but I did. There
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: their big point, it has nothing to do it almost
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: has no thing to do with it, Like it has
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: nothing to do with the fact that cold Strange was
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: good or not good on the field. The point is
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: that the guard position inheritently is not a premium position.
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: It's not going to move the needle. So they took
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: a pick that was a big pick in this whole rebuild,
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: the first round pick, and a rebuild is a big deal.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: And they took that pick and instead of taking an
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: outside corner or a receiver or a pass rusher or
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: something like a premium value even to tackle, they took
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: a guard. And that whole draft to me is now,
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: it was at the time and it is now. It's
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: predicated on Tai Kwon. I if Tai Kwon ends up
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: hitting and the draft is fine. But if Tai Kwon
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: ends up being a bust, then the top of the
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: draft was a miss because cold Strange isn't going to
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: move the needle for you, regardless of he's good or not.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: And then Tai Kwon didn't live up to it. So
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: we'll see about the Jones is right, Jones could be
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: a diamond in the rough. He's a fantastic player, but
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: he's a returner and a slot corner. Right, Yeah, we'll
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: see what he is as a slot corner, because just
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: as a returner, to you a point like you're not
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: gonna like just all of a sudden get to a
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: different level because you have a great returner. Jonah Hughes writes,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: and he says, I'm a junior at North Carolina State
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: and Material science engineering. Good for you. I wanted to
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: thank you for being the best football podcast out there.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: You always provide entertaining commentary and Patriots takes. I hope
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: to see soap with a slot in store soon. How
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: much of a role do you think Bill O'Brien is
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: having in the offensive signings this offseason. He's known for
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: liking Yak type players, which is exactly what Juju and
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: Robinson are known for. I love Jacoby and wish we
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: kept him as a wide receiver too, but Juju was
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: eleventh in the NFL and Yak and Jacoby was fortieth.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: Tight End Gisecki is also up with the same amount
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: of yards tight end. Gisecki is also an interesting receiving threat. However,
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: it does little in the blocking game. Does this make
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: drafting a tight end more likely? Also, I want Laporta
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: drafted in the second or third round in the draft. Well,
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: you can't have Laporta and want blocking because Laporta ain't
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: going to come in here and block. He's a receiving
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: tight end and kind of, you know, in the Hernandez
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: type mold. And I think with Kiseki that this is
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: something that I feel like they've also sort of brainwashed
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: people on is like blocking being this this this huge
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: thing that matters in twenty like it's twenty twenty three, right,
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: Like last time I checked that we're we're and we're
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: worried about that they don't have an inline blocking tight end.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: Like I don't know that. I'm not saying that you. Yeah,
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: I mean maybe Gisicki is like exceptionally useless in that
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: regard based on some of them. Yeah, And I'm not
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: suggesting like you should just have tight ends that don't
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: even get in anybody's way. But I kind of agree
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: with you. It's like, you know, little Judan Humphrey, we're
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: gonna have him here, you know, because he can block.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Like the people that were still hanging on to hope
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: for Nikkil Harry who were telling me that it's because
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: he's well, look how we blocks, right, And I just
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: don't think that to you a point that you just use.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: I don't think you win and lose games because of
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: the effectiveness of your wide receivers blocking in the running
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: game now and how they're speed bumps. Of course, it
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: helps as long as they're speed bumps, right, as long
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: as they can get into somebody's way and force them
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: to take a second to go through them to the
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: ball carrier. That's all that matters. If you're telling me
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: that the guy's a laying every single time, that's different.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: That's what it kind of sounds like a SICKI is.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: But the emailers point about the YAK, I think, um,
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: you know most specifically about Bill O'Brien's influence on some
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: of these most Yeah, I think that he's part of this.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: I think he has an idea of what he wants
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: to do with his system and the players that he
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: thinks can help in it. I do think Juju gives
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: you more explosiveness than myers. I don't think a lot
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: of people would argue about that. Um, I don't think
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: asiki gives you more explosiveness after the catch and running
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: backs all have all yak. Running backs catch passes at
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: or behind the line of scrimmage. So if you're gonna
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: get any yards order your running backs, it's gonna be
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: yack right. Yeah, you're not going twenty five yard bombs.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: You know that down the sideline off and I mean
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: there's a wheel route here or there, but you're not
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: going vertical with your running backs. The nerds that do
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: a lot of deep dives into running back passing game value,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: and they're on an average, their average depth of target
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: is obviously going to be much lower than a receiver
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: or a tight end. So their whole argument with running
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: backs passing value is you're actually deterring yourself by not
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: throwing to a wide receiver or a tight end running back.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: And it's sort of to a lesser degree. Why I
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: kind of, you know, Mike and I kind of got
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: into a tuesday about Juju and Myers and again, like
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: I'm not you you decided to swap them out. I
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: don't think that you got killed in that. Like, fine,
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: it Jujus a little better, maybe he's a little better, Okay,
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: but that's part of it. It's like you have all
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: these numbers. Now, they tell you we'll look at all
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: these yards after the catch, but they're not taking the
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: consideration how much closer to the line, screaming he catches
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: the ball. But the way the way I look at
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: that running back game, a lot of it is it's
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: a substitute for the passing game. It's a substitute for
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: the running game. Right, A short little swing pass is
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: a high you know, it should be a high you
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: know percentage pass, Right, and it's it's like, and how
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: did you think that Romandre Stevenson was in the passing
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: game last year? Fine? Right, it was really good. Yeah,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: I think until very late in the season when he
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: clearly ran out of gas. Yeah, I thought he was
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: the best player on office. But a lot of teams,
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: including the Patriots, have used that as a substitute for
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: the running game at times. Yeah, and when it's fine,
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: when it's third and three and you get James White
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: matched up on a linebacker and he breaks his ankles,
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: Like that's that's another way that you can use the
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: running back as a valuable pass I'm not saying there's
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: no value in pass catching running backs. I just think that,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: you know, guys like James Robinson, I don't think necessarily
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: move that needle for me. Like, I'm gonna have to
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: see that he still has that rookie season juice in
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: the passing game that he had with Jacksonville. Like, sure,
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: I can go back and watch him in twenty twenty
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: and see him take some some slants and be productive
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: out of the backfield, But is that the player he
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: still is? And I'm not looking to reopen my whole
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: juju thing, but That's kind of how I feel about Juju. Yeah,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: if it was twenty eighteen, I wouldn't be telling you that.
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah, him and him and Myers are the same.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: The twenty eighteen season that Juju had is something that
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: Jacobe Myers could never even aspire to. He would never
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: even think about having one hundred and eleven catches for
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: fourteen hundred yards. Myers is not capable of that. But
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: I don't think Juju was anymore either. Nick in Connecticut,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: you had a call last Thursday show. I believe it
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: was a caller named Roman. He claimed he wanted nothing
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: to do with Lamar Jackson because Max's last five games
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: of the season gave him hope for this year without Paul.
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: There's no one pushed back on how stupid that claimed
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: that was. I'll put together a few points from each
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: game to show how hopeful it was. Wow, Cardinals MAC
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: had zero touchdowns, one hund exception versus the bottom five
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: pass defense only one because Kyler went out first play
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: of the game, plus another pick that was overturned by
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: replaying Raiders. MAC was thirteen to thirty one, passing zero
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: t D zero and exceptions, and the callers most idiotic point.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: The Patriots would have won in overtime because they had momentum.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: They literally allowed the Raiders to tie the game with
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: thirty seconds left. Bengals they scored eighteen points offensively. Dolphins
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: they won by two points against their second and third
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: string quarterbacks while getting a defensive touchdown. Otherwise they scored
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: under twenty again Mac also just reliving the season. Mac
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: also threw an immaculate two hundred and four yard and Bills.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: He claims the offense outscored the Bills offense and that
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: the special team's touchdowns were the only reason the Bills won. Meanwhile,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Mac had three interceptions while throwing for less yards and
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: the same amount of touchdowns as Alan in the game,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: despite the fact Allen was playing with a ten point cushion.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: I hope I filled the role of Paul Well and
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: signed Lamart for the love of God. Loved the show.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: Thanks as always. Well, we just had to relive a
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: season that was really not all that fun to live
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: in the first place. So so I would hope that
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: you guys did some pushback on like the last five games.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: There was nothing, no, but there was some of this
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: going around. I remember last year of extrapulating the stats
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: of like, oh, well, you know, the last five games
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: he was at two eighty and the you know, two
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: hundred and eighty yards per game or like whatever. There
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: were a lot of interception stats I remember, Yeah, and
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: his interwors got better. They were ignoring. Yeah, he cut
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: back on the interceptions in the second half of the season,
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: but it completely ignored that he also cut back on
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: his production. Yeah. No, I would push back on the
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: notion that there'sn't there's there's no excuses for Mac, But
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: that doesn't go hand in hand was saying that they've
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: improved the roster enough. You know what I mean, Like
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: to me, this year with Mac, he's got to show
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: some playmaking ability and some you know, overall just a
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: better product on the field for me to be bought in.
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: But that doesn't necessarily mean that I think that he
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: should be this is a Super Bowl roster that he
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: should be quarterbacking this year. I think those two things
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: are separate. It's totally fair. You can look at things.
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: It's just like Fred when you made the point about
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: Billy Oh, like yes, like absolutely as a competent offensive coordinator.
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: At the same time, that alone isn't going to get
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: you over the hump if you don't have the horses,
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: you know. So I won't put it all on that
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: makes it better. I won't put it all on oll
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: We'll see, okay, because I don't think they were all
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: that much better at all. And all of this is
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: we'll see. All of it is, we'll see. But that's
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: all we have to go on right now, is on paper.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: But it definitely makes them better, yes, But the talent
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: itself is like kind of a wash. I mean, they
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: really and I mean I think you can make an
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: argument that they've lost pieces on defense, right, I mean,
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: who have they added on defense to replace Devin mccordy. Yeah,
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: I think that, And he actually tweeted this out the
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: other day. I think they kind of liked their in
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: house guys at safety. Would that frighten you? It doesn't.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: It doesn't because I think I think Dugger's a really
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: good player. I think Dugger has a chance to be
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: on a mccordy level in terms of what he brings
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: to the table as a player. But I don't think
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: that he'll I don't. I'm not putting a much stock
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: in Jabriel Pepper's and Adrian pl No, I like Dugger too.
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: I'm not going to be a fraud and tell you, oh, no,
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: he can't play. I don't think he's great in coverage,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: but I like his instincts of going after the ball.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: He has a nose for the ball, and I threw
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: him out as a center fielder type last year, even
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: though that's not the way he's been employed. Yeah, I
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: think there might be a chance that he could play
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: like that. So I like Dugger a lot as a player.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: I don't love him, right, but I do. I do
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: think that he does a lot of things well, and
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: he's physical and he's athletic, all right. Cody from Indiana
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: has who am I game? Three clues for a player
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: one guests each. These are all Belichick era Patriots first
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: first player. I have a twin. No one's gonna jump out.
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: I feel like it's obvious. Jacob Hollister, No, you're wrong.
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: My favorite beverage is apple juice. And finally, I swear
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: I can be a good punt returner if you just
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: give me a chance. Kyle Dugger has a twin. Oh
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: he's a twin sister, doesn't he Yeah, that's a twin.
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: I guess yeah, next person, I have intercepted Tom Brady
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: three times. I only spent one season in New England vs.
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: Ravous is correct? Good, next person. My father and I
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: both played for multiple NFL teams. My father and I
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: both played for multiple NFL teams. I have been on
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: teams head coach by both Bill and Josh McDaniels. And finally,
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: I caught Tom Brady's one hundred touchdown. I'm over. I'm
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: discussed with this one. I should know Niel Graham, I
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: have one I want. I knew that Daniel Graham's father
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: played in the NFL. So far, good, Cody. I have
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: won a six point Yeah. I have won a Super Bowl,
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: both with with and against the Patriots. I had more
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: than one stint with the Patriots. And Deuce cannot pronounce
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: my name correctly. Yeah, like Garrett Blunt. Like Garrett Blunt
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: is correct, mat that was not me. Finally, I was
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: also a baseball prospect before my football career. It's too obvious.
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: I have had more than one combative incident with fans.
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: Who and if my aunt had ball, she'd be my uncle?
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: Answers Paul Perella, that's me, Thank you, all right, let's
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: give away another T shirt. All right, um again, first
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: person with the correct answer to where radio at Patriots
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: dot Com wins the T shirt. And so it's it's
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: really a speed test. Um, let's say, let's see which
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: one should I do. What is the name of the
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: school Andy taught in for one day? What is the
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: name of the school Andy taught in for one day?
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: This might be not as I think that one might
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: be a little tougher than the normal. Yeah, okay, So
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: first correct answer to web radio at Patriots dot com
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: wins it. So, Matt, you you monitor that. In the meantime,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: let's get back. Let's get back to the some of
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: the phone calls. The phone lines are stacking up again. Uh,
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: let's go to Eldred in North Carolina. What's up, Eldred?
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: All right, I'm doing but uh, Paul, I'm like you,
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: and we were about to saying the safety but I've
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: been We're about the same guy picking for the last
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: five six is really but Evan, yes, sir, pick it
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: back off of William and Phil him, will you know?
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: Yeah for Philly whatever those corners are too short. You
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: said that Jones is up good, but man, they can't
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: run with dig and and what you gotta throw the
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: ball up over the head standing there and there's a touchdown.
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: I think the first pick should be a corner. And
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: like I said, I package here's some things to move
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: up if ports gone or if you know, because Zalas
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: But I don't know about Rick. Rick kind of scared
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: me a little bit from Alabama. I don't know, what
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: do you think, Well, Rix isn't going in the first round?
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: What about Devin Witherspoon. I'm looking at him on the TV.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: You want taller, he's five eleven feet Okay, But look
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: I there's no doubt about it that they need another corner.
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: I'm not gonna sit here and say that that's not
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: a need and everybody's overrating that need. All I'm saying
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: is is do they need a different body type at
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: corner or do they really need this this shutdown guy
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: that everybody keeps talking about. I personally feel like they
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: can They can more than get away with at least
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: just having a matchup corner that can go out there
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: and cover a T. Higgins on a day when they
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: face a receiver who's six foot three. Like, I don't
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: think it. I don't think it necessarily needs to be
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: the first round. The other thing I would just say,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: just looking at this draft, corner is maybe the deepest
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: position in the draft. The tacklee now right, and I'll say,
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: you go after Apple, but go after gun thou after
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: you can. But my point is is that there's guys
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: on day two of this draft at corner that I
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: personally feel like can start in the league. I'm not
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: sure if there's a tackle that's going to be there
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: on Day two in this draft that can start in
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: the league. So if you're trying to figure out which
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: position to go when, I am much more concerned about
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: waiting on tackle because I don't know if there's a
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: starting caliber tackle after the first round. So it makes
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: it hard. I know there's a star in caliber corner
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: to be had at forty six. There's gonna be somebody
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: that they you know, I really like Julius Brents from
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: from Kate State. He's six foot three, he's a good athlete.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: He fits the bill of a matchup corner to play
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: on the outside against bigger receivers. You know, those guys
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: in this draft go you know, twenty deep in the
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: top one hundred, So That's where I'm coming at. Wither
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: I rather who had to do ones that I do
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: that does show does test whale, then datives you know
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: like Gonzalez a porter, then the other guys who might
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: be like Lucky did the last couple of years, you
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: picked this corner because you thought he was better, and
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: the stuck around it is another butt you know, you
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: never know. But I always, like I said, some time,
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: to be an athlete, you get to go after day athlete.
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: But these guys are all good athletes. Like I might
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: asking them to pick another Juan Williams, who too just
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: can't run with an NFL receiver. You know, these guys
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: are all are all good athletes. This is a very
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: very good corner class where I would have the hard time.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: And I think whatever talked about is what is what
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: makes it difficult is you know you can sit there
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: and identify your needs and then decide what's worth rolling
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: the dice on. But for me, the corners I'm intrigued
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: by because there seemed to be a handful of guys
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: with some decent size, bunch of guys that are that
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: are also athletic, and I think that that's a rare
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: combination that you have options at fourteen that you could
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: get a six two guy that is an athlete or not,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: as you said, a six two guy like Jowan Williams
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: can't run. You know, I just think that there will
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: be one of those available in the second round. And
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: I get I know you could get both in the
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: second round. Right size and athletics. I think so in
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: this class, yeah, because it's just it's a deep class.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that any of those other guys.
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: You know, Joey Porter, Christian gonzazz is one of my
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: biggest draft crushes. The guy's an incredible talent. I personally
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: think a lot of these mock drafts they are coming
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: out that Hapkins allus on the board at fourteen are
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: smoking something like No, I think he's going to be
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: a top ten pick. But regardless of that, you know,
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: Cam Smith is on the TV right now from South Carolina,
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: really good player. His teammate Darius Rush is also in
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: this draft, is also six foot two, also ran right
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: South Carolina. Has had a good run. Yeah. So the
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: point being that Cam Smith's going in the first round,
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: Rush is probably going on Day two. You have to
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: think about drop offs right, Like, how big of a
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: dropoff is there from Cam Smith to Darius Rush versus
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: Broderick Jones to Jalen Duncan, Right, Like, those are the
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: types of things that that teams think it absolutely um
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Boston Cream writes in Paul Paul, Juju's air yards per
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: target was two point four yards less than Jacobe. The
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: depth of target between the two isn't a large. The
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: difference that separates the two is Juju's route win rate,
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: especially against man coverage, which he's inside the top ten
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: and Jacoby is outside the top fifty. We've always said
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: we need man beaters. Now we have one. Oh, I
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: don't know about that. These are bad stats. I was
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: gonna say, did you just say there's a difference between
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: depth of target of over two yards? About two yards?
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: That's not I mean you tell me that is that nothing?
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: That's not nothing? But the man coverage like that to
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: me explains the gap and yards after Yeah, it's it's
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: the difference in the yards after catch is why they
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: both average the same amount. Yeah, who is the trivia winner?
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: Chris with a T I A N. Oh? All right,
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: Chris with a T I A N gets a T
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: shirt and the person to say Dighton Rehoboth, and while
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: I've enjoyed my time at d I'm excited about my
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: future Boston Creame. I don't like your stats any too
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: good for the trivia he was supposed to be coming
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: after me too, the man coverage stuff. I'd that's not
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: what I see with my eyes, that Juju is a
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: better man coverage beater than Jacoby. I think it's the
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: total opposite. Honest, yeah, I'm not. I don't have those
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: numbers in front of me, and I know that you
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: do have these kinds of things, so I wouldn't question them.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: My only thing what I keep saying is again, I
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: will accept that Juju is better than Myers. I don't
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: really think it, but I'll accept it because I think
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: there's a very logical argument to be made for it.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: So it's a it's not my Mount Cooks, it's not
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: a hill I'm going to die on. What I just
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: can't get past is all of this explosive talk about
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: the yards after catch. I agree Juju Smith Schuster is
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: better with the ball in his hands than Jacoby Myers.
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, over the last
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: three years and last year in particular, it was the same.
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: Their average per catch is very similar, and I think
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: when you take into consideration last year, one guy was
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: in the best offense in football and the other was
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: in arguably the worst, and they both averaged twelve yards
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: a catch, even twelve point zero. I don't know how
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: much that explosiveness does for you, That's all I'm saying.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: I just think that the the argument is is that
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: in this offense and Bill Bryant's system in the way
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: they're going to use Juju. If you're using Juju in
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: that way versus using Jacobe in that way, who's the
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: player that's better fit for that type of role. But
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: we won't know because Myers isn't going to get that opportunity.
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: I just right, I guess so. But I think that
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: the yards after catch argument comes in in that vague
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: Myers did it catching balls off his shins from Cam
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: and then the last two years, you know, with a
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: young quarterback who was trying to find his way, he's
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: Juju did it with Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown on
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: the other side and Patrick Mahomes. Yeah, no either that
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: that's fair. I just think that people look at it
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: and look at the yakability of let's see what Myers
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: does this year in Kansas City. But even then it's
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: not happens to happen, No, I know, But like, what
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: does he do with mahomes? You know? Now they both
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: go in there. He's going to the Raiders. Why Jimmy Garoppo?
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: Why do I keep thinking he's going in because Juju
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: came from the Chief came. I'm all messed up? All right, Okay,
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: did you bang your head? Well? You are right? Yeah?
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: Did you fall down? Okay? Grew up under power lines? Hey,
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: why don't you read another tribute question? I know you
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: wanted to get a bunch of those in Not yet?
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: Oh okay? Um Calvin from Connecticut, I'm I'm but Dard's podcast,
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: he brought up the possibility of why the books or
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: cap numbers for twenty twenty twenty four appeared to be
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: pretty open. Uh. In other words, low thirties for total
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: players signed in one hundred million cap space. It's the Patriots.
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: The idea was thrown out about ownership having at hand
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: and Bill keeping the books more open so that if
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: things go sour this year, they could have the ability
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: to reset or change directions. Roster coach in quarterback. I
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: don't believe that. I don't believe this at all, because
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: then wouldn't Bill be more open to trading these picks
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: away this year, having eleven of them and get the
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: guys of veterans he wants. Also more of splash signings
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: than depth stuff. I'm curious, do you guys believe about
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: any reasons for such little twenty twenty four roster planning
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: or have the Patriots just not gutting around two extensions
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: of core guys like on when you dug or et cetera.
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: Love the show. Thanks for taking a few of my
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: emails recently. Last thing, still hoping to find out what
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: Evan from previously cliness media thinks of Bobo. Who's Bobo?
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: I have no idea who Bobo is. I don't know
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: who Bobo was either, But to I can't really get
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: myself to worry too much about twenty twenty four yet
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: because we're so worried. We're so worried about twenty three.
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: But besides that, the Patriots have a bunch of players signed.
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: Relative to the rest of the league. They're actually I
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: think near like tenth in terms of guys signed that
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: past twenty twenty four and beyond. The difference is is
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: that they don't have a lot of big money guys
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: because they haven't handed So that number that Mike was
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: up in arms about is actually high end in the league. Yes, yeah,
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: in terms remember that. What did I say to you
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: that day? I need to know more information. I need
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: to know how many guys? Now you sound like me,
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: Paul when I say I need How does that compare
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: to other teams? Yeah? I want to say it's eleventh,
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: I think is the number that I looked up. So
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: so let's right, right, yeaper. Problem is is that to
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: your point earlier, they don't have anybody to pay, right, Like,
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: they haven't paid anybody big money because none of your
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: younger players they're worth it yet. So that's why it's
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: a different space. Like I answer this question, the emails question,
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: you don't have a lot of You don't have a
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: lot of guys that you like. I got to resign
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: Rob Gronkowski, right, I'm giving him a big money second contract.
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: You know, the last several years, they've had a big
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: money free safety that's been running the show on the
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: back end that they don't have anymore. Right, So, There
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: are definitely guys, you know Kisiki Jalen Mills, that are
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: signing one year deals to clear out the cap in
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, but a lot of their their young
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: guys just haven't hit extension eligibility or they're just haven't extended. Yeah,
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: you know, like Ker interested in that theory. We'll see
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: if it if it ends up having any validity, But
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: you do want to keep your flexibility if you're not
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: necessarily certain about the future. It's a good way to
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: go if if if in the back of your mind
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: you think it's possible that we're going to be headed
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: to a reset, what if it doesn't work out with
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: Mac Jones right, well, you want to have as much
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: flexibility as you can. Forget about Bill. That's true, I
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: would That's where I would go with it, is that
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: I don't know if it's at at that high of
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: a level. I think it's more about Okay, if you know,
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: Mac Jones isn't the future, And let's say Lamar plays
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: on the tag for Baltimore and then becomes an unrestricted
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: free agent next offseason, and now you have fifty million
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: dollars in cap space to give to you know, a quarterback,
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: you know, something like that. Let's get back to the
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: phones of Noah is in the UK. Oh, he's not
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: in the UK, he's off the phone. Let's go to
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: Tony and Charleston, South Carolina. A lot of South Carolina today.
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: I'm heading down there. What's up Tony, Tony? Is it
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: something wrong with the phones today? Yes, it's you. No,
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: it's not me. I'm hitting the right buttons, bad fingers.
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: Tony's gone. Let's go to Todd in North Carolina. What's
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: up Todd Well Greenville, North Carolina? Which is you know,
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: small tiny, I think maybe ninety thousand people. We had
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: both mister Beast and Tom Rady here on Monday visiting us,
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: which yes, it was kind of startled. And there's pictures
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: of him in our one horse airport hugging some airport
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: official and stuff. So interesting times. Which brings me to
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: something that just Paul just said. I think this entire
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: year is about two things. Can does Bill still have
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: his fastball? And do we have a quarterback? Because anyway
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: you cut it, you're the teams in the NFL, It's
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: all about your quarterback and your coach. You get those
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: two working on the same page and get them going.
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: And I'm hoping that ye was a little bit of
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: Bill O'Brien guidance that we can see something out of Mac.
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: But I don't think they'll ever see Lamar Jackson here.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: I don't think that's something that would work in the
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: long run. I wouldn't count on I. Yeah, no, I
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: don't count on that. So my question is how many
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: years do we give this experiment with the coach and
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: quarterback before we say, hey, one of these has got
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: a change or both, Like do they get two more years?
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: They get one year? This is a critical year. It's
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: a critical year even if you think Bill still has
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: his fastball. If Mac has a bad year, now you
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: have a decision that you have to make soon with
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: his fifth year. And then if obviously, if you don't
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: think Bill has his fastball, then you're thinking one or
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: two more years for Bill. So this is a critical
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: If you think Bill doesn't have his fastball, this is it. Yeah,
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: but I don't think that. I don't. First of all,
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: I don't have any wonder if Bill has his fastball. No,
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: he's fine. I'm not worried about the coach. I still
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: think the coach is as as good as he's ever been. Yeah,
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: I'm far and maybe O'Brien certainly helps us, and apportedly
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: Adrian clemm certainly helps us. But I've I think the
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: one of the more underreported stories has been the support
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: staff losing Dante Scarneckia, losing I'm in fears, losing Ernie Adams,
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: then losing Josh like that type of stuff I think
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: is getting Really it's hard because it all, it all
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: goes on Bill, right, you know, it all becomes about, well,
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: is Bill losing his fastball? Or is it that his
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: assistant coaches aren't as good as they used to be? Right?
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: A lot less experienced? Yeah? Yeah, yeah. Um. The Bobo
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: that was being referred to as Jake Bobo wide receiver
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: out of you. Yeah, yeah, I know he is. I
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: don't I don't understand how that has to do with
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: my old employer, but sure, So what do you think
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: of Bobo? No? No? Okay? Oh wow, No, he must
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: really stank because Evan kind of likes everybody. Someone told
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: me that he's a little Jordan Humphrey. Oh, I'm out
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: on him. Yeah, Mike loves him, definitely out on him. No, deuce, Okay,
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: did he did he ever talk to you about the
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: other guy he loved when Ucla Phillips, Oh, yeah, yeah, No,
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: he likes he likes Bobo because Bobo was nice to
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: him at the combine, which I'm made fun of. I
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: made fun of Mike about that for a while. Oh yeah,
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: just good because I know, you know, I don't you know.
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: I usually I just let things go. Uh, let's see
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: Burton and Burton Island says It's just one of those
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: little things. But one of my favorite parts of the
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: show is when Fred messes up a call and Paul
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: Mumble's good job, Hardy, because and you know he's probably
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: been around long enough to know that when Hardy does it,
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: I say, good chop. Fred right El from Wisconsin says, wow,
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: I hate the news about Judge. So a big issue
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: before was that he kept overstepping his bounds and incorrectly
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: interfering with some positional groups. So the response by Bills
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: to give him that authority. Bill sure loves his guys
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: and will hurt the team to prop them up. This
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: is getting I blame Brier. Yeah, this is the tweet
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: was worded poorly. Yeah, I'm just gonna everyone has a
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: theory on Joe Judge, Why don't you he's he's gonna
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: be doing research projects behind the scenes, and then he'll
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: work with special teams on the field, right, Like, this
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: is not he's not the assistant head coach. Okay, he's
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: not the coach and waiting, he's not having some major influence.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: Like we talk about this all the time, Paul with
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: the draft, Like Bill's drafting, Okay, no one else is drafting.
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: Joe Judge is not going to all of a sudden
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: get into the draft room and be like, agree, Bill,
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: you know what, I really like this kid? Like, no,
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: that's this is not happening there. He does some research projects,
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: he's gonna do some some paperwork and stuff like that
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: behind the scenes, and then when they get out on
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: the field for the offseason program in a couple of weeks,
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: he'll be with the special teams. I even wonder how
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: much you're gonna see him on the field, like actually coaching,
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: Like Matt Patricia was on the field all the time
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: during camp and stuff, but not actually coaching a group.
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: I wonder if he's just going to be kind of
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: out there overseeing and doing what Matt Patricia did in
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: twenty one just sort of being more of an advisor,
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: and I think that they might be quote unquote leaking
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: it out there that he's working with special teams to
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: sort of allay those fears of like, what after all
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: of those breakdowns on special teams last year, we've just
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: gone status quo. Like I think thought that Joe Judge
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: did a good job with special teams before he left
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: for the Giants, but you did, so he's back in that.
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: Don't worry about it. But I wonder even how much
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: of that he's going to be doing. Kristen new Hampshire
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: says while the defensive coordinator with the Giants. While Bill
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: was the defensive coordinator with the Giants, Lawrence Taylor was
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: on the roster as the head coach. Tom Brady was
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: on the roster with arguably the greatest player ever and
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: the greatest defensive player ever. I don't understand how Bill
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: has come to the conclusion on how to build a
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: team that seemingly flies in the face of the reality
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: of who was on his teams when they have had
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: the most success. What am I missing here? They haven't
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: hit in the draft. It's not that he doesn't think
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: that could play this notion that he doesn't think that
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: good players matter, I think is a little bit overblown too.
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: I just think that they caught all those good players
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: in the draft and he hasn't drafted. Well, yeah, so
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: where are you gonna get him from? You're not gonna
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: get him in free agency like those guys are not.
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: We saw that. Yeah, you hope that maybe one guy
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: like Judeton works out for you, but you're not going
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: to get a whole a whole core of players that
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: are that are a lade talents through free agency. So
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: they guy draft better. Uh. Noah from the UK is
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: back on the line. What's up? Noah? Hey, guys, sorry
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: about that. I think I just dropped the line that
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: was friends. No it wasn't. Go ahead, Noah, Sorry, I
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: happened to be the same caller. I know that another
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: guy sent an email I was. I was the one
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: who was defending Mac Jones last week, and just briefly
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: because that's not why I called in, but I just
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: wanted to say that I totally agree in those stats
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: are the stats? Are the stats. It was more than
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: I felt the team played more like a team in
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: in those last five games, and more that you know
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: it was going in the right direction at the end
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: of the year as opposed to twenty twenty one where
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: it sort of trailed off. But that's not what I
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: called in for. I wanted to ask about the cornerback
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: group and the tight end group in the draft. So
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: I've heard, and Alex has said this quite a bit,
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: is that they're both equally sort of very deep or
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: unusually deep groups. And I wanted to ask when the
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: Patriots are drafting and they're in the draft room and
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: you have a choice between assuming you want to take
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: a tight end and you want to take a cornerback,
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: should you go for the better tight end first or
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: the better cornerback When you're at a place in the
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: draft like, which one should you wait for? I mean
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: it all depends. I mean you mean overall, like or
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: as a philosophy, or in this particular draft, in this draft,
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: in this particular draft. That's an evan question. I think
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: it's tough because I can talk myself into both sides
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: of that, I suppose. I mean, look, if you think
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: one of these tight ends is Travis Kelsey and he's
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: going to be that number one guy in your offense,
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: and I think that that has more value. I'm not
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: sure if I see that in this class. Well, let's
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: just say that it's at fourteen and every cornerback and
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: every tight end is a corner. Absolutely, So that's the end.
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: But my answer would be corner. But let's do it
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: this way because let's so Travis Kelsey or Gronk. Let's
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: say Gronk and Vas. Yeah, who are you picking? Gronk?
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: That's a tough question, Cronk, but I don't like, I
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: don't just make it easy for you. Yeah, I mean
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: I could have said, you know, Gronk or russ I Dowling.
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: I think in this day and age, Gronk, I think
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: the corner party really think then a hall of fame
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: shutdown corner. Well, it's a hall of fame tight end.
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: I know. That's why. That's why I picked high end
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: both FO side. I think that I didn't want to
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: pick because I mean, I love Gronk, but man, I
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: am enamored with guys who can what if it's to
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: Dion Sanders, oh m hmm, because I wanted to get
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: the I have a offseason take about as long as
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: he stays with me and is Deon gonna tackle? I
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: just think that the difference is to me is that
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: in this day and age, in the league, you have
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: to compete on the scoreboard like you. I just don't
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: a good point. I just don't think that you're because
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: you can't shut down other teams. You can't do it.
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: But you can't. You have you have chance, you have
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: a better chance. Right, It's a good point. That's a
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: good counter every once in a while, every once in
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: a while, and I say, no, you can't. You can't
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: go in this league anymore trying to shut everybody. I'm
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: not saying they're all wrong, but I'm saying there's a
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: lot more really good tight ends in this league than
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: really good corners. Oh I don't know about that. Oh yeah,
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: how many starting tight ends are there that are in
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: this league? Like fourteen that are actually good tight ends?
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: Fourteens a lot. There's like probably three true shut down corners.
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: I think that says, well, there's not fourteen really good
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: tight ends in the way I think. So, I think
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: that the three really shut down corners is because in
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: today's day and age, it's very hard to play corner.
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: And I just don't think I'm saying you're not gonna
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: win game seventeen to fourteen anymore. That's my point. But
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: I think, but if you got a guy like Vas,
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: you put them on their best player, Jamar whoever it is,
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: and that's a huge advantage. But you're operating under the
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: assumption that when you do that, and you don't have
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: to worry about it anymore. No, Evan's trying to tell
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: you that you do that and you're still giving up points.
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: I'm not saying that because if you can't score him,
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: you can't keep up. Because maybe Revas goes out there
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: and let's let's just take the Bengals for example, right
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: VS goes out there, he shuts down his side, he
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: shuts down to Jamar Chase. Okay, well, who do you
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: have on tee Higgins? Who do you have on Tyler board?
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: But as you trickle down, I just I don't think
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: football anymore, unfortunately, because I love defensive football and I
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: love the you know, your philosophy of foot's put Revas
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: on Chase and then you double Higgins like I love
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: of all that X and those stuff. I don't think
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: you can consistently win in the league anymore. This argument.
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: I was corner when I came into this, I think
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: he's he's won me over. Um. I would just ask you, Fred,
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: who do you think of the shutdown corners in football?
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: I have no idea two or three guys that's like
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: so few, like not even a name pops like you know,
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: maybe Miami has one, now I don't know, you know,
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: that would be my point, Like I think most people
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: would consider Jalen Ramsey a really good corner. Yeah, I
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: think you can beat him all day. Like I don't
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: think you're stopping Travis Kelsey, right, I see none of
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: these guys. See My point is, none of these guys
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: are Drn Sanders a Durell read Well. I bet you
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: if you played something, they would be a lot better
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: than they look. Now. The game is just it's not
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: just about the receiver talent. It's just the way the
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: game is played. You know, the rules, the how wide
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: open everything is. Like I think that if you know, guy,
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: one of my favorite corners in the league is Patrick
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: Surtan endeavor. I think if Patrick Curtan played when Ti
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: Law played, he would be that good. He'd be that good.
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: But nowadays he's going up against you know, one week
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: he's got chased and then next week he's got Tyreek
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: and then the next week he's got a J. Brown.
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: That is just right, I know. But like to me,
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: Rivus and Dion Sanders are transcendent. You know, they're like
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: no one's except if you asked Dan to tackle. Well, okay,
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: but I'm just talking about pure coverage, pure coverage. No one,
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: no one has come close. Even back then, they were
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: better than everyone, and they'd be better than everyone now.
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I'm not disputing that. I just think that
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: he goes back to what Saban said like five or
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: six years ago about college football, and I think it's
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: really starting to trick up to the league too. You
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: have to compete on the scoreboard now. The point is,
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: if you had Rivas or Sanders to Evans point on
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: a defense, you're still giving up over twenty points a game. Yeah,
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: and if you can't score, you can't win the game.
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: That's the Patriots problem, especially I can't score. You're trying
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: to go on a playoff run. At some point in
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: those three or four games, you're gonna have to put
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: up thirty five to advance. You know. It's just like
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: everybody always talks about the eighteen run in the defense
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl, Well in Kansas City, they went
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: toe to toe with Patrick Mahomes on the scoreboard, not
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: because the defense shut them down and eventually great stuff
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: from them. Yeah. Yeah. The thing about that is, like,
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: there's a lot of way to score points. You can
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: do it with that tight end. You can do it
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: with the great receiver, and obviously you need the quarterback,
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: but there's a lot of But man, there's only one
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: way to shut down that best receiver on the other team,
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: and that's if you have a good corner. You know,
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: that's one way to do it. I just yeah, but
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: that doesn't shut down the offense, tell, but it at
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: least it handles one thing that's and I don't think
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: it's I don't think anybody is capable of doing that. Yeah,
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: it could probably, but I just I just look, you know,
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: like you can do it, like like if temporarily, like
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: Sauce Gardner did it a lot last year, But I
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: just think it's a temporarily kind of like if you
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: said Jalen Ramsey or George Kittle or Kelsey, I might
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: pick the edit in that case, you know, Yeah, Noah,
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: because I don't think he's the best. But just whoever
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: he comes up. It's like, if you want to pick revs,
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: I thought a corner is harder to find. That's why
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: I originally went with corner. But your theory, you're you're,
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: like I said, you swayed me on just the importance
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: of being able to school points. Thanks. No. I just
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: wish that they like this is how I would like
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: the people in this building to start thinking more. Is like,
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: because like sometimes the one thing that worries me about
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: this off season so far is that they do really
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: think that juju and get sicky and these like this
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: is enough. I think Tom Curran had a tweet, you know,
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: last week after they signed both of these guys, and
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: he was like, oh, well then you put Tae Kwon
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: in and like they got some pieces, they got enough,
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: and it's like do they though, like nowadays, do they
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: really have enough? And I saw it like he kind
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: of I saw that that exchange that he had, Tom Curran,
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: and he he had said something about, you know, hope
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: to be able to school more than twenty five points. Okay,
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: if that's if the goal is that we can we
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: can sniff twenty five points once in a while. Yeah,
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: I think that you have that all right? I think
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: you have that, hope quickly. I want to give away
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: one more T shirt so Matt doesn't lose any more hair.
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: Um again. First correct answer to web radio makes this
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: should be an easy one. The question is what is
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: a nut wizard? What is a nut wizard? First correct
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: answer to web radio at patriots dot com is the
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: winner of a Patriot's unfiltered T shirt? What is a
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: nut wizard? Let's see are they coming in? Are they're
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: coming in? Now? We can get it on catch twenty two.
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: It's my server down. Yeah, what is a nut wizard?
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: So that I gotta tell you something. You could probably
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: count on one hand the amount of times I changed
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: my opinion on something based on someone else's argument. That's one.
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: I see. I see a correct winner. Who is it?
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: Give where he's from? But Carl, Yes, acorn picker upper.
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: It's an acorn picker upper pick upper. Ye like it.
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: Somebody sent me a couple of those as a gift. Fright,
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: you still have that in your office? I do. I
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: was complaining about acorns in my backyard one year, and
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: this guy sent me a couple of nut wizards, and
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: I haven't had a problem with Acorn since so all right,
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: now you're on capes. Yeah, all right, that's gonna be
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: it for this edition of Patriots Unfiltered. Stay tuned though,
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: for Catch twenty two. Evan and Alex Barth will be
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: here to really break it down and really argue. Yeah,
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: they have some things to argue. Yeah, they have some
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: things to argue about today. So Evan previewed that argument.
