- 0:00Speaker 1: And the time that David dwelt in the country of
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Philistines was a full year and four months. 1
- 0:06Speaker 1: Samuel 27.7 Dear Lord, as a tree finds its strength
- 0:12Speaker 1: to endure from its roots, I too will find my
- 0:15Speaker 1: strength in the depths of my roots and from the
- 0:18Speaker 1: ground I choose to grow in. In moments of loneliness,
- 0:23Speaker 1: give me the resolve and the strength to remain planted
- 0:26Speaker 1: in the place you've called me to. I will not
- 0:30Speaker 1: abandon my values and morals to partner with others who
- 0:34Speaker 1: offer protection and gain at the cost of my character
- 0:37Speaker 1: and right to stand with you. I will not become
- 0:42Speaker 1: comfortable with compromise as David and his men did during
- 0:45Speaker 1: their season of loneliness in 1 Samuel 28. Because I
- 0:50Speaker 1: am new and transformed, I will instead take on the
- 0:55Speaker 1: latter spirit of David and fight for what is mine.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I will retake and regain what the enemy has stolen
- 1:02Speaker 1: from me. Through your power, God, I will be able
- 1:06Speaker 1: to reclaim my land, my position, and all that belongs
- 1:11Speaker 1: to me, my family, and my future. I declare that
- 1:16Speaker 1: compromise is not an option. In Jesus' name, amen. Thanks

- 1:45Speaker 2: David in Ziklag In our last story, we learned about
- 1:49Speaker 2: Saul's latest pursuit to take David's life. David once again
- 1:54Speaker 2: had the opportunity to end Saul, and with him all
- 1:57Speaker 2: the fleeing and exile. Yet David's conviction as a man
- 2:01Speaker 2: of God stood its ground. He spared Saul, and Saul
- 2:06Speaker 2: once again repented and left David's presence. Now David dwells
- 2:10Speaker 2: in the land of the Philistines, serving under King Achish.
- 2:15Speaker 2: David and his men made raids on the enemies of Israel,
- 2:18Speaker 2: pretending to make raids for the Philistines. In this story,
- 2:22Speaker 2: we learn about David's continued partnership with the enemies of
- 2:26Speaker 2: Israel and how small compromises continue to overshadow David and
- 2:30Speaker 2: his men, as inspired by the book of 1 Samuel.
- 2:37Speaker 3: This is Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:40Speaker 3: in a Year podcast. In our last episode, we saw
- 2:43Speaker 3: how David once again had the opportunity to kill Saul,
- 2:47Speaker 3: but he chose not to do it. Rather than choose
- 2:50Speaker 3: his own way, and try to justify his own actions,
- 2:53Speaker 3: he obeyed God. He stood firm in his conviction that
- 2:56Speaker 3: God would deal with Saul. But despite Saul's apparent regret
- 3:01Speaker 3: for having chased David down again and his promise to
- 3:04Speaker 3: leave him alone, David's faith wavered and he fled into
- 3:08Speaker 3: Philistine country, forming an alliance with a foreign king. Today
- 3:13Speaker 3: we'll learn how David's loyalty to Israel will be tested
- 3:16Speaker 3: and how his decision to settle in enemy territory will
- 3:20Speaker 3: bring peril to his people. So, let's listen to the
- 3:24Speaker 3: scripture today.
- 3:26Speaker 2: David proved himself to be a convincing actor, as if
- 3:30Speaker 2: in a play he played the role of a Philistine marauder.
- 3:34Speaker 2: David performed his role daily in front of Achish and
- 3:38Speaker 2: the other Philistines. He made raids on neighboring villages, ate
- 3:42Speaker 2: and drank as a Philistine, and spoke in their native tongue. However,
- 3:47Speaker 2: the lines between fiction and reality slowly began to blur
- 3:52Speaker 2: for David. His allegiance to Israel was muddled by his
- 3:55Speaker 2: Philistine company. His mind fell into a fog, and his
- 4:00Speaker 2: sense of right and wrong began to blend together. Now
- 4:04Speaker 2: David found himself among the Philistine camp, where they were
- 4:08Speaker 2: marching up against Israel. David, the chosen protector and rightful
- 4:13Speaker 2: king to the throne of the Hebrews, was preparing to
- 4:16Speaker 2: slaughter Israel. The Philistines began their march and gathered their
- 4:21Speaker 2: forces at the peak of Aphek. The Israelites were camped
- 4:24Speaker 2: by a spring below. The lords of the Philistines were
- 4:28Speaker 2: making their rounds and saw David and his men preparing
- 4:31Speaker 2: for battle.' What are these Hebrews doing here?' the commanders
- 4:35Speaker 2: asked Achish. Achish responded,' This is David, who has been
- 4:40Speaker 2: under my service for years now.' I have found no
- 4:43Speaker 2: disloyalty in him yet.' David's eyes looked away. David had
- 4:48Speaker 2: given the visage of loyalty to Achish, but had never
- 4:51Speaker 2: actually harmed any Israelites. However, he had not been faithful
- 4:55Speaker 2: to Israel either. David and his soldiers were men without
- 4:59Speaker 2: a country. One of the Philistine commanders approached David and
- 5:03Speaker 2: looked him in the eyes. He knew what David had forgotten.
- 5:08Speaker 2: David was a Hebrew, and their champion was Send the
- 5:11Speaker 2: man back with his soldiers. He may be separated from
- 5:15Speaker 2: Saul now, but what better way to reconcile with him
- 5:18Speaker 2: than to kill us in battle? Don't you remember the song,
- 5:22Speaker 2: Saul has killed his thousands, but David has killed his
- 5:25Speaker 2: ten thousands? Achish pulled David aside and embraced him. Achish
- 5:31Speaker 2: looked at David and said, As the Lord lives, you
- 5:35Speaker 2: have been nothing but faithful to me. I have found
- 5:38Speaker 2: nothing wrong with you. However, the lords do not approve,
- 5:41Speaker 2: and I cannot dispute them. Go and be free. David's
- 5:47Speaker 2: heart turned. David was like a child who was rejected
- 5:51Speaker 2: by his father. He craved the affirmation from Saul, yet
- 5:55Speaker 2: found it in the enemy Achish. David did not want
- 5:58Speaker 2: to hurt the Israelites, but he also did not want
- 6:01Speaker 2: to leave Achish's side. What have I done to earn
- 6:04Speaker 2: their distrust? David asked. Achish hugged David and sent him
- 6:09Speaker 2: back to the land of the Philistines. That day, David
- 6:12Speaker 2: was spared from committing the sin of slaughtering his people.
- 6:16Speaker 2: God in his mercy kept David from waving his sword
- 6:19Speaker 2: against his brothers. So David and his men left back
- 6:23Speaker 2: to Ziklag, still men without a true alliance or country.
- 6:28Speaker 2: David and his men returned after a three-day journey. As
- 6:32Speaker 2: they were approaching the city, they could see smoke rising
- 6:35Speaker 2: into the skies. David's eyes widened, and the men ran
- 6:39Speaker 2: fast into the city of Ziklag. Homes were reduced to ash,
- 6:44Speaker 2: and smoke emanated from farms. The Amalekites rode in the
- 6:48Speaker 2: night and raided the city while the men were away
- 6:51Speaker 2: at war against Israel. David and his men ran frantically
- 6:55Speaker 2: through the city, shouting for their wives and children, yet
- 6:58Speaker 2: they could hear no response. David burst through the doors
- 7:02Speaker 2: of his home to find nothing but broken and burnt furniture.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Every man's wife and child had been taken by the Amalekites.
- 7:10Speaker 2: David's men writhed in tears over their captured wives. They
- 7:14Speaker 2: raised their fists at God. They cursed David, and they
- 7:17Speaker 2: wept on the floor among the ash and wreckage. While
- 7:21Speaker 2: his men yelled and wept in pain, David sat there silently.
- 7:26Speaker 2: David stared off into the distance, praying silently. The other
- 7:30Speaker 2: men became overwhelmed with grief, but not David. David sat there,
- 7:36Speaker 2: remembering his time as a shepherd in Bethlehem. He was
- 7:39Speaker 2: reminded of when lions and wolves would come after his
- 7:42Speaker 2: sheep and steal them away. David would run after them
- 7:45Speaker 2: and slaughter the wild beasts to save his sheep. This
- 7:49Speaker 2: would be no different. David rose from his feet to
- 7:52Speaker 2: go meet with the Lord. They had some catching up
- 7:55Speaker 2: to do. David knelt before God under the stars. He
- 8:00Speaker 2: spoke to God as he used to while tending his sheep.
- 8:03Speaker 2: David breathed in the cool air and exhaled praises to
- 8:07Speaker 2: his Lord. He considered his family who had been taken
- 8:10Speaker 2: and the families.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Of his men.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Lord, David said, shall I pursue them? Will I overtake
- 8:18Speaker 2: them if I go? God responded to David quietly and firmly. Yes, David,
- 8:25Speaker 2: I have already given them into your hands. David stood
- 8:29Speaker 2: to his feet, picked up his spear. and marched intently
- 8:33Speaker 2: back to his men. The sun rose that morning, and
- 8:36Speaker 2: a dark red covered the new sky. David and six
- 8:40Speaker 2: hundred of his men ran without stopping, intent on reaching
- 8:43Speaker 2: the Amalekites before they could return home. They reached the
- 8:48Speaker 2: brook of Bezor. The waters raged, and many of the
- 8:51Speaker 2: men were too exhausted to cross. Discouraged and weary, two
- 8:55Speaker 2: hundred of the men refused to follow David any longer,
- 8:59Speaker 2: and remained on the shore of the brook. David and
- 9:02Speaker 2: the rest of his men crossed the brook. A fire
- 9:05Speaker 2: was burning in their soul to save their families, but
- 9:08Speaker 2: they had gone three days without food and almost no water.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Dragging their feet, they marched further and further. Finally, an
- 9:17Speaker 2: Egyptian in the open country gave the men bread, water, fruits,
- 9:21Speaker 2: and cakes to eat. They were filled and strengthened at
- 9:24Speaker 2: the perfect time. David put his hand on the Egyptian's
- 9:28Speaker 2: shoulder and said, Thank you, friend. Where do you come from?
- 9:32Speaker 2: The boy smiled and said, I served the Amalekites but
- 9:36Speaker 2: was abandoned by them when I became sick after we
- 9:38Speaker 2: raided the Israelites. David's eyes lit up. He smiled to
- 9:43Speaker 2: his cheeks and let out a bright laugh. He grabbed
- 9:46Speaker 2: the boy and asked intently, Could you take us to
- 9:49Speaker 2: your old band? The boy nodded, and David and his
- 9:53Speaker 2: men ran forward faster and with more vigor. Less than
- 9:57Speaker 2: a day had passed, and the Egyptian led David and
- 9:59Speaker 2: a couple of of his men to a cliff overlooking
- 10:02Speaker 2: the Amalekite camp. They peeked their heads over the rocks
- 10:05Speaker 2: and looked down at the valley. The men were spread
- 10:08Speaker 2: out far across a valley. Torches illuminated their dancing, drinking,
- 10:13Speaker 2: and feasting. David could spot his wife captive below, along
- 10:17Speaker 2: with the wives and children of his men. While the
- 10:20Speaker 2: Amalekites were still drinking, dancing, and enjoying the spoils of
- 10:24Speaker 2: their raid, they heard the horns of David echoing through
- 10:27Speaker 2: the valley. Before any man could realize what was happening,
- 10:31Speaker 2: David and his army descended upon the camp with might.
- 10:34Speaker 2: They swung their swords with the strength of fathers and
- 10:37Speaker 2: husbands protecting their families. David marched through the camp, striking
- 10:42Speaker 2: down every Amalekite soldier in his sight. Some tried to
- 10:46Speaker 2: fight with no success. David and his men were far
- 10:50Speaker 2: too angry and skilled for them to stand a chance.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Others fled on camels, but all the women and children
- 10:56Speaker 2: were saved. The sun began to rise, and David gathered
- 11:00Speaker 2: the families, the stolen goods, and all the livestock. David
- 11:04Speaker 2: and the families made their way back home. There, to
- 11:08Speaker 2: greet them, were the two hundred men who refused to continue.
- 11:12Speaker 2: They came out elated to see their families. Everyone cheered
- 11:16Speaker 2: except the men who had fought. They looked at the
- 11:18Speaker 2: two hundred men with disgust and said to David, These
- 11:22Speaker 2: worthless men did not go with us. They should not
- 11:25Speaker 2: get any of the spoil. They should take their families
- 11:28Speaker 2: we have saved and leave. David calmed his men down
- 11:32Speaker 2: and had them keep quiet. He drew a deep breath
- 11:35Speaker 2: and looked at both groups of men. My brothers, this
- 11:39Speaker 2: is given to us by the Lord. He is the
- 11:41Speaker 2: one who preserved us, David said. As God has shared
- 11:45Speaker 2: his goodness with us, so we shall share. Those who
- 11:49Speaker 2: battle and those who support from afar are equally in
- 11:52Speaker 2: need of food and shelter. David's words surprised the people,
- 11:57Speaker 2: but they were all pleased with his decree. David, still
- 12:01Speaker 2: a young man, was just now learning what it truly
- 12:03Speaker 2: means to lead like a king. They divided the spoils
- 12:07Speaker 2: amongst one another and sent the leftovers back home to Judah.
- 12:11Speaker 2: David's heart to protect Israel was beginning to resurface.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Today's story begins with David living a lie. He has
- 12:24Speaker 3: very cleverly convinced Achish of his loyalty to the Philistines,
- 12:28Speaker 3: and the king trusts David as one of his own. Still,
- 12:31Speaker 3: David had not yet done actual harm to any of
- 12:34Speaker 3: his own people, the Israelites. Instead, he was attacking neighboring towns,
- 12:39Speaker 3: enemies of Israel, and telling Achish that that he was
- 12:42Speaker 3: raiding Israeli villages. But now as the Philistines gather in
- 12:46Speaker 3: numbers to attack Israel, David isn't on a solo mission,
- 12:50Speaker 3: and he can't hide behind his deception. Were it not
- 12:54Speaker 3: for the distrust of Philistine commanders, David might have been
- 12:57Speaker 3: compelled to sin against his own people and attack them.
- 13:01Speaker 3: The commanders recognized David as a Hebrew, and not just
- 13:04Speaker 3: any Hebrew. This is the great shepherd warrior David, the
- 13:08Speaker 3: anointed king, the one who was at one time one
- 13:12Speaker 3: of Saul's greatest soldiers, and though Achish vouches for David,
- 13:16Speaker 3: affirming that he is a loyal Philistine, the commanders aren't
- 13:19Speaker 3: believing it. And so Achish tells David that while he
- 13:23Speaker 3: trusts him with his life, the Philistine army commanders have
- 13:26Speaker 3: rejected him. He and his men must return to his
- 13:28Speaker 3: home in Ziklag. David's response is interesting. He appeals to
- 13:34Speaker 3: the king to let him stay and serve him in
- 13:36Speaker 3: a battle. Perhaps he was finally getting the acceptance he
- 13:40Speaker 3: wanted among the Philistines, something that had eluded him with Saul.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Or perhaps he was forgetting his calling from God, his
- 13:48Speaker 3: anointing to be God's man, the king of Israel. Whatever
- 13:53Speaker 3: the reason, it appears David was confused, that his loyalties
- 13:57Speaker 3: were divided, and he may have been willing to turn
- 14:01Speaker 3: over his own people to the enemy. But God in
- 14:04Speaker 3: his grace did not allow David to participate in this battle.
- 14:08Speaker 3: He closed the door to protect the man that he
- 14:10Speaker 3: had chosen to serve him. How often do we fail
- 14:14Speaker 3: to recognize when God has protected us from ourselves, from
- 14:18Speaker 3: our sins, leading us out of temptation and delivering us
- 14:22Speaker 3: from evil? As in the case of David and for
- 14:26Speaker 3: you and me, this is all because of God's grace,
- 14:30Speaker 3: that grace we know, is now found in the Lord
- 14:33Speaker 3: Jesus Christ, who went to a cross and died and
- 14:36Speaker 3: rose again so that we could receive the gift of
- 14:40Speaker 3: eternal life, not by works of righteousness that we have done,
- 14:43Speaker 3: but according to his mercy he has saved us. This
- 14:47Speaker 3: is the grace of God. So David returns home with
- 14:51Speaker 3: his men only to find the Amalekites had attacked while
- 14:54Speaker 3: they were gone. This is a terrible scene. These enemies
- 14:58Speaker 3: of Israel had burned the entire town down, but killing nobody. Instead,
- 15:03Speaker 3: they had taken the wives and the children of the
- 15:06Speaker 3: men of David captive. Everyone is heartbroken. They are weeping.
- 15:10Speaker 3: And the people, the army, even turned their anger towards David,
- 15:14Speaker 3: wanting to stone him. But the Bible says that David
- 15:19Speaker 3: encouraged himself in the Lord. David found his strength in
- 15:23Speaker 3: the Lord and sought counsel. He went to the Lord
- 15:26Speaker 3: and asked him if he should pursue the Amalekites and
- 15:29Speaker 3: take what had been lost. So David and his men
- 15:32Speaker 3: went after the Amalekites. It was a long and arduous journey,
- 15:36Speaker 3: and they suffered from hunger and exhaustion. Two hundred men
- 15:40Speaker 3: actually turned back, unwilling or unable to continue. But David
- 15:44Speaker 3: found an Egyptian boy who had once served the Amalekites.
- 15:49Speaker 3: He gave them food and water, strengthening them for battle,
- 15:52Speaker 3: and led them to the enemy. And, just as God
- 15:56Speaker 3: had promised, David was victorious. They returned home with their
- 16:00Speaker 3: wives and children and the spoils of war, which David
- 16:03Speaker 3: insisted be shared with all, even those who had not
- 16:06Speaker 3: gone into battle. Then he sent some of the spoils
- 16:09Speaker 3: to Judah. His heart turned again to his people that
- 16:12Speaker 3: he was called to lead. Lord, we thank you for
- 16:16Speaker 3: this powerful story and how it reminds us that you
- 16:20Speaker 3: do protect us from evil and that you often shield
- 16:23Speaker 3: us from making terrible and sinful, disobedient decisions. Thank you
- 16:28Speaker 3: for your grace. Thank you for your salvation in Jesus Christ.
- 16:32Speaker 3: And may we always be willing to fight the good
- 16:35Speaker 3: fight of faith and win great victories for you. In Jesus' name, amen.
