- 0:00Kathie (2): I walked into a leadership meeting once.
- 0:02Kathie (2): Everyone was smiling, everyone was agreeing, and nothing real was being said.
- 0:08Kathie (2): Decisions were getting made, but no one looked confident.
- 0:12Kathie (2): There was no tension, no pushback, just smooth conversation.
- 0:17Kathie (2): And in that moment, I knew something most people would miss.
- 0:21Kathie (2): This company wasn't aligned.
- 0:23Kathie (2): It was performing.
- 0:26Kathie (2): And that's a very dangerous place to be, because when a company starts performing, instead of thinking you don't see the problem right away, you feel it first.
- 0:37Kathie (2): And most leaders ignore that feeling.
- 0:41Kathie (2): Welcome to the Kathie Owen Perspective Podcast.
- 0:44Kathie (2): This is where we talk about what's really happening inside companies.
- 0:47Kathie (2): The things you won't see on a spreadsheet, but the things that quietly shape decisions, culture, and outcomes.
- 0:55Kathie (2): My name is Kathie Owen.
- 0:56Kathie (2): I'm a private consultant, and I specialize in identifying human patterns under pressure, especially inside founder-led companies, private equity environments, and organizations going through high-stakes transitions.
- 1:11Kathie (2): I don't come in to fix people.
- 1:13Kathie (2): I observe systems.
- 1:15Kathie (2): I watch how pressure moves through a company, how decisions get made, and how people behave when it actually matters, because that's where the truth is.
- 1:25Kathie (2): And today, we're going deeper into something almost every leader feels, but very few can explain.
- 1:34Kathie (2): That moment where something feels off, but you can't prove it.
- 1:39Kathie (2): If you've ever had that thought,"Something's not right here." You're not guessing, you're noticing.
- 1:46Kathie (2): Because what you're picking up on is a pattern.
- 1:49Kathie (2): And under pressure, people do something very predictable.
- 1:53Kathie (2): They adapt, they protect themselves, they find workarounds, they create systems inside your system.
- 2:01Kathie (2): And those hidden systems quietly start shaping your business.
- 2:06Kathie (2): Let me walk you through the 10 patterns I see over and over again.
- 2:12Kathie (2): Number one, power moves outside the organizational chart.
- 2:18Kathie (2): You think decisions flow through leadership, but inside the business, people know who really has the influence.
- 2:26Kathie (2): They go around the structure to get things done.
- 2:29Kathie (2): That tells you something immediately.
- 2:32Kathie (2): Trust in leadership is already broken.
- 2:35Kathie (2): People have just adapted to it.
- 2:39Kathie (2): Number two, people stop thinking and start performing.
- 2:44Kathie (2): Meetings sound good.
- 2:46Kathie (2): Everyone agrees, but nothing real moves forward.
- 2:50Kathie (2): Because people are no longer thinking out loud.
- 2:52Kathie (2): They are performing.
- 2:54Kathie (2): And once that happens, truth disappears from the room.
- 2:59Kathie (2): Number three, micromanagement is a signal.
- 3:05Kathie (2): Micromanagement is not the root problem.
- 3:08Kathie (2): It is the signal.
- 3:09Kathie (2): And it tells you the system doesn't feel safe without control.
- 3:13Kathie (2): So leaders grip tighter, and eventually, they become the bottleneck.
- 3:20Kathie (2): Number four, misaligned rewards.
- 3:24Kathie (2): I saw a company roll out a reward system once.
- 3:27Kathie (2): It looked great on paper, but people stopped focusing on their real work.
- 3:31Kathie (2): They chased the reward instead.
- 3:34Kathie (2): They gamed the system and performance drifted because the system was rewarding the wrong behavior and people followed it perfectly.
- 3:46Kathie (2): Number five, false communication alignment.
- 3:50Kathie (2): This one is subtle and it looks like alignment.
- 3:53Kathie (2): Everyone nods and everyone agrees, but it's not real.
- 3:58Kathie (2): It's performed alignment.
- 4:00Kathie (2): And you don't see the problem until execution falls apart later.
- 4:06Kathie (2): Number six, leadership reality gap.
- 4:11Kathie (2): Leaders believe things are fine, but if you go to the floor, if you listen, you'll hear a completely different story.
- 4:20Kathie (2): I've seen this so many times.
- 4:23Kathie (2): The issue is not care.
- 4:24Kathie (2): It is access.
- 4:26Kathie (2): Truth doesn't move upward in a system that doesn't feel safe.
- 4:32Kathie (2): Number seven, you've probably felt this one yourself.
- 4:36Kathie (2): Burnout disguised as performance.
- 4:38Kathie (2): Results look strong, but the people delivering them are exhausted.
- 4:43Kathie (2): You don't see it in reports.
- 4:45Kathie (2): You feel it in tone, in energy, in patience.
- 4:48Kathie (2): And when those people leave, it feels sudden, but it was not.
- 4:55Kathie (2): Number eight, loyalty over logic.
- 5:00Kathie (2): Some people stay protected, not because they're the best fit, but because they've been there a long time.
- 5:09Kathie (2): Or they're really close to leadership.
- 5:12Kathie (2): And slowly, decisions stop being about what's right.
- 5:17Kathie (2): They become about what's comfortable.
- 5:21Kathie (2): Number nine, silence replaces truth.
- 5:25Kathie (2): There's no pushback, no disagreement, no hard conversations, and leaders mistake that for alignment.
- 5:34Kathie (2): But it's not alignment.
- 5:35Kathie (2): It's withdrawal.
- 5:37Kathie (2): People have stopped telling the truth.
- 5:41Kathie (2): And number 10 is invisible behavioral signals.
- 5:46Kathie (2): This is where it all starts.
- 5:48Kathie (2): The most important signals in your company are invisible.
- 5:53Kathie (2): Tone shift, eye contact, hesitation, energy in the room.
- 5:59Kathie (2): You don't see this in a report, but it tells you everything.
- 6:04Kathie (2): I actually did a video on your face is breaking trust.
- 6:09Kathie (2): I will link to that in the show notes and description below.
- 6:14Kathie (2): So there's one place inside companies where truth still moves freely, and almost no one uses it.
- 6:22Kathie (2): Not in meetings, not in reports, in human conversations.
- 6:28Kathie (2): That is wellness environments, coaching conversations, moments where people are not performing.
- 6:36Kathie (2): That's where people talk about their stress, their life, and almost every time it leads back to work.
- 6:43Kathie (2): That's one of the clearest intelligence signals inside a company.
- 6:49Kathie (2): And most leaders ignore it.
- 6:51Kathie (2): By the way, that is corporate wellness.
- 6:55Kathie (2): This matters because by the time these patterns show up in your numbers, you're not diagnosing anymore.
- 7:02Kathie (2): You're dealing with damage.
- 7:05Kathie (2): If something felt familiar in this episode, it's already happening.
- 7:09Kathie (2): You know, that feeling you can't quite explain, that's awareness.
- 7:14Kathie (2): And the leaders who learn how to trust that, they see what others miss.
- 7:20Kathie (2): And they protect their companies before things start to break.
- 7:25Kathie (2): If you want to go deeper into this, I wrote a full article, breaking down all 10 patterns in detail.
- 7:31Kathie (2): You'll find that linked in the show notes along with bonus resources.
- 7:35Kathie (2): And if this episode gave you clarity, share it with someone who needs to hear it, because most leaders are feeling this.
- 7:43Kathie (2): They just don't have language for it yet.
- 7:46Kathie (2): This is the work I do.
- 7:47Kathie (2): I help leaders see what's happening inside their companies before it shows up in their numbers, especially during high pressure moments, growth, transition, and change.
- 7:58Kathie (2): And if you want to go deeper, my book, Human Patterns Under Pressure, is linked in the show notes and description as well.
- 8:06Kathie (2): All right, thank you for being here, and I'll see you in the next episode of the Kathie Owen Perspective podcast.
