- 0:00Well, every once in a while, the Brewery Underground podcast, we
- 0:04go on the road and today we are in East Nashville.
- 0:08Scott Taron, this is a really, really, really big deal today,
- 0:12what we're doing. All right.
- 0:13Something unique, something we haven't done before.
- 0:16We mostly do these on teams. We've done remotes where we've
- 0:20got gone to breweries, we have. We are actually in a
- 0:23professional studio. A professional studio.
- 0:26Hey, thanks for Tyler having us over here, Taylor.
- 0:30Taylor, thanks for Taylor having us over.
- 0:31Here, Tyler, that's. Right.
- 0:35And the guy on the. We've got a guest.
- 0:37Yeah. We're not here just by
- 0:38ourselves. We have singer-songwriter Tyler
- 0:41Boone, who you also know is, you know he's got Boone's bourbon.
- 0:46You're like Mr. Entrepreneur. You do everything.
- 0:48You're, you're like a renaissance man, aren't you?
- 0:50I'm. Just trying to pay off my
- 0:51student loans. Dude couldn't get a job so.
- 0:56Well, it is indeed a pleasure. I know Scott has met you a
- 1:00couple of times and this is my first chance of beating you
- 1:03today, but we're really excited to get you on.
- 1:06And you know, one thing that we do, we always start the podcast,
- 1:10as we always start the podcast, drinking a beer.
- 1:13And we've got some beer in front of us.
- 1:15And I'll tell you what, it's really timely because, oh, I
- 1:18don't know, it's Boone's beer, which was just released.
- 1:21What a. Coincidence.
- 1:22What a. Coincidence.
- 1:23He just happened to have it here, huh?
- 1:25You guys want to crack one? Let's crack one.
- 1:27It's nice and cold. Thanks for.
- 1:29Making it cold. It's called Homegrown Boone's
- 1:31beer. Cheers.
- 1:35Cheers. Cheers.
- 1:35Taylor's got one over there. Cheers.
- 1:38Oh yeah, we made it. Sure, he was hooked up.
- 1:40Let's get all over his keyboard. Let's.
- 1:44Do that. Cheers.
- 1:45All right, I've had this once already.
- 1:47This is Steve's first time having it.
- 1:49And you, Taylor, might be yours. You got it at Frugal.
- 1:51I got it at Frugal. Mcdougal's cool both times.
- 1:53Nice. Matter of fact, as a matter of
- 1:55fact, I went back today and got another 4 pack.
- 1:57I was like I was running a little low.
- 1:58I'd given most of mine away. Nice.
- 2:01We drank some, you know. Eric over there, the buyer.
- 2:03I don't know, Eric. He's the beer buyer.
- 2:05Really, man. Frugal McDougal.
- 2:07I, I freaking love those guys. There's some Frugal McDougal in
- 2:10Rock Hill because North County is a control state, so everyone
- 2:13gets the booze and Rock Hill, they drive down there from
- 2:15Charlotte and go back and so there's the original Frugal
- 2:18Mcdougal's there and I'm from South.
- 2:19That's where this all started. And so they all sell all of it.
- 2:22But the Frugal here, I mean, it's the Nashville 1.
- 2:25So everyone, every local brand or brand that just gets
- 2:28distribution. Nashville, they're gunning for
- 2:29that store. Do they support the living shit
- 2:31out of us? They all wear Booms T-shirts.
- 2:33That's great. Obviously they've had this one
- 2:35for a long time. The Single Barrel, they didn't
- 2:37even taste it. They brought it in and when I
- 2:38had this, I was like, man, Beer's so competitive in
- 2:41Nashville. I was like, they're not going to
- 2:42take it. And I just showed up and Eric
- 2:44goes out and I don't need to taste something.
- 2:45I was like, Oh my God, so and it made and it made Lippman go, oh,
- 2:49that's our distributed living, the green trucks.
- 2:51Have you ever? Seen them?
- 2:52Yeah, yeah. Anyway, well, thanks for buying
- 2:54it, it's awesome. Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:55And you're like, selling beery stuff is easy, huh dude?
- 2:59I think the beer's going to be bigger than the bourbon.
- 3:00Yeah, because everyone will try a beer.
- 3:03They will it's yeah, you know, it's it's it's quickly consumed
- 3:05kind of thing. And get them.
- 3:06You know you can share them, but you know this lasts longer but.
- 3:09Yeah, that, you know, yeah, people sip on.
- 3:11That absolutely, which is go ahead, Steve.
- 3:14No, I was going to say so the the beer is a pills.
- 3:16There, yes. Yeah, definitely.
- 3:18And so I'm really curious as how long has this been in the
- 3:22planning stages for you to finally get this beer out?
- 3:25So actually it's funny enough that happened on I was like, oh,
- 3:27cool, we're doing this podcast yesterday.
- 3:28I saw a memory on, you know, memories on Facebook six years
- 3:31ago yesterday. We started the idea of it like
- 3:34got the like the, the label and the labels change a little bit
- 3:36over time. Label used to look really
- 3:38similar to that and then it changed into this where it's
- 3:41got, well, this looks like the single barrel.
- 3:42I'm not sure if you had the single barrel.
- 3:44It's got the doggie on it. OK.
- 3:46And so that's, that's our Wiener dog from growing up.
- 3:48And then it's a Palmetto from Charleston, SC home grown, very
- 3:53southern. We used to do a lot of stuff
- 3:55with like Hootie growing up. I used to like I was fortunate
- 3:57to open up from a lot when I was like in college.
- 4:00And so they always said home grown and I thought that, oh,
- 4:02that sounds pretty southern. And so that's where it came
- 4:05from. But three years ago we actually
- 4:07launched it. It's so it's been out for three
- 4:09years, but entrepreneur stuff, we had a bad business Co Packer
- 4:14who were in we're actually still in legal battles with and we're
- 4:16going to win. But they're they're so screwed.
- 4:19But they they got they try to get involved and they kind of
- 4:23ruined it. And it was with Holy City
- 4:24Brewery. And so the beauty of it was Holy
- 4:26City Brewer is the big like the biggest sorry brewery in South
- 4:29Carolina. I know the owner and he was
- 4:31like, dude, let's do collab with Boone's bourbon because you guys
- 4:33are kicking butt. He made us the recipe.
- 4:36And so I didn't have to hire anybody.
- 4:37He just goes, I'm going to make it for you.
- 4:39And it first came out with Holy City and then we had to stop it
- 4:41because it got all weird with that ex Co Packer.
- 4:43And we're all cool with Holy City.
- 4:45They're like, hey, man, you know what, we're going to stop it
- 4:46because it's a little weird with this person, but how about you
- 4:49keep the recipe for free? And we're like, what?
- 4:51No way. And so then we had another
- 4:53brewery called Tradesman in Charleston.
- 4:56They just weren't doing well. And it's dude, I would never
- 4:58own. I would never start a brewery or
- 5:00to stairless. I was rich because it's so much
- 5:02money to keep the lights on. And so now we're with Columbia,
- 5:06Columbia Craft Brewing Company Peak Drift.
- 5:07Yep. Which is on the can.
- 5:09Yep. So Peak Drift is just like, like
- 5:12Bardstown, where we do a single barrel, just a massive facility
- 5:15where everyone's making their beer out of there.
- 5:17Yeah. Because they can make it the
- 5:18price point cheaper and you just be more competitive.
- 5:20And so it's in Columbia, SC They own Columbia Craft Brewing
- 5:23Company. That's their brand, but Peak
- 5:25drift that does like Island Coastal Lager.
- 5:28They're from Charleston, OK, somebody Scottie Hanson, that's
- 5:30his brand and they do, you know, high rise, the CBDTNC.
- 5:34They're from Charleston too. OK, so they're just making a lot
- 5:36of stuff so that so that's where this is now.
- 5:38OK, made out. Of so like a contract Brewer?
- 5:41Yeah, yeah. But it's our recipe, it's our
- 5:43band. We just pay them and honestly,
- 5:45it's the best move ever did now being with them because they're
- 5:47they're so big. It's they're called cans are
- 5:50it's a dude. It went way down once we got to
- 5:52them finally SO. It's great.
- 5:53It's 5.4% really nice ABV on this thing.
- 5:57It's delicious. Tell me, what do you think it
- 5:59is? It is pretty good, isn't it?
- 6:00Yes. I love it, I love it.
- 6:02But man, it took three years to kind of get where at because
- 6:04also the biggest thing is distribution.
- 6:06You could have a beer, but if you got Joe Schmo's with a
- 6:09license at the end of the street with a small truck, the the
- 6:12bigger stars like man, I don't want to open up a new contract
- 6:15with a distributor. Just go get the big guys and
- 6:17you're like, Oh my God, I'm trying.
- 6:19And so now that Littman picked it up in Nashville, that's why
- 6:21you see it everywhere now, because they're they're, they're
- 6:23awesome. How does that happen?
- 6:24Like do you interview distributors and talk to them
- 6:27and like or just kind of say who's interested?
- 6:29E-mail the hell out of them. And that's and, and sometimes
- 6:32it's like boom. And sometimes it's like, you
- 6:34know, it's the bigger distributor.
- 6:36Sometimes it's corporate ish or it is corporate and they go,
- 6:39hey, man, yeah, fiscal years at next year this time and you
- 6:42might miss the deadline and you're like, shit, I got to
- 6:44wait. And so in South Carolina, we had
- 6:46a distributor that was statewide called Holy City Distribution.
- 6:50And they were stealing money from everybody, including us.
- 6:52And so they went under. And so then we we were only
- 6:54distributing S kind in Rock Hill.
- 6:56Well, I'm sure you know, this beer is different than spirits.
- 6:59Spirits is usually statewide, usually depending on the state.
- 7:02Tennessee it's not, but but we opted in for let me to take the
- 7:06whole state for us, but because it's in section, it's a
- 7:08franchise state. But in South Carolina it's just
- 7:11one, right? And so for spirits, but for
- 7:13beer, it's every section. And so for a minute we were just
- 7:17with, it's called, Oh my God, why am I having a brain fart?
- 7:21Who's your distributor in Raquel?
- 7:22They're the biggest ones Comer and they're the Miller house.
- 7:27And so that's big deal for us cuz every time I go to Rock
- 7:29Hill, it's like we're a rock star cuz I'll walk in.
- 7:31Hey, I'm the owner and I just want to meet you there.
- 7:33Go. We've had this for I'm like,
- 7:34whoa. So distribution is a really
- 7:36important thing, but you know, not to get so much on
- 7:39distribution, but RNDC is who we have in South Carolina.
- 7:43RNDC is like one of the biggest ones in the country.
- 7:45They're now getting gutted. And you know, Reyes Reyes, big
- 7:48beer distributor, they just ended California.
- 7:50They took Brown Foreman from him.
- 7:51They took Tito's from him, which is Jack Daniels and all this
- 7:54stuff. And so RNDC is now leaving
- 7:56California. They just announced yesterday,
- 7:57September 1st. So there's just a cutthroat game
- 8:00distribution. You'd be killing it.
- 8:01And the next, you know, they might lose their biggest
- 8:03contract and then you were a part of that and they go, hey,
- 8:06we're out of business, see you later.
- 8:07It's a wild thing. And it's a 3 tier system.
- 8:09So the money goes three times and so sometimes the the brand
- 8:13always gets screwed because the money is still coming again.
- 8:15Maybe all of a sudden, maybe the account didn't pay for the the
- 8:19the Beer Store and then you don't get your money.
- 8:21Sure, it's wild so. Well, saw you posted pictures on
- 8:25Instagram of your beer at you know, he said got a frugal
- 8:29Mcdougal's. I'm I'm, I'm assuming you went
- 8:31in there. You probably looked around like,
- 8:33you know what, how much exciting was that for you being in
- 8:36Nashville and you walk in there and like, I see my.
- 8:39I went three times. Nashville.
- 8:41I was like, I kept, I kept walking in there.
- 8:42I'm like, shit, it's not here yet.
- 8:44So it took the third time. I was like, yes, it's finally
- 8:46here. Yeah, I was getting set.
- 8:47It's kind of like hitting that little.
- 8:48Section right there. It's yeah, it's.
- 8:50And I was like, yeah, it's not here.
- 8:51Oh, there it is. Thank God.
- 8:52So. When I went the first time, it
- 8:54was last week and I'm walking through and it you said it was
- 8:56there and I was like, shit, they're sold out or I can't find
- 8:59her or something. So I wandered and wandered and I
- 9:01got it hits the little video I made.
- 9:03I was like, yeah, there it is. He's got, he's got like, I think
- 9:07like 4 cases always at one time. But I mean, I want to get the
- 9:10kegs in there. Kegs are cool and you're talking
- 9:11about a really cool tap house or.
- 9:14Yeah, so Deep South Growler, they have two locations, one in
- 9:17Murfreesboro and one in Lenox Village.
- 9:18They're they're local to me. Like I can walk to their to
- 9:21their place and they do kegs. So I mentioned it to them, the
- 9:26hop in river north, place down on the river right there.
- 9:29That's got 60 taps. They followed us on Instagram.
- 9:31Today, did they OK, I sent them AI sent them a text and said,
- 9:34hey, guys, just, you know, at least create a demand or
- 9:37something, maybe if you don't have kegs yet, ask for them.
- 9:40And then, you know, Lippman pays attention and yeah, totally, you
- 9:42know, they're seeing that. So.
- 9:43My buddy Kevin Lilly, who runs Fox St. where we met at that big
- 9:46party, Taylor was there too, A little snowing.
- 9:50You know, he's, I've known him for years.
- 9:51He's on a big brewery. He owns a piece of I believe in
- 9:53Nashville beer, but he's on Rock Brothers Brew.
- 9:56We did like 3-11 and all that. He told me a good like quote to
- 9:59remember. He goes, man, no matter what
- 10:01you're doing, if you're stressed out, the account wants it.
- 10:02That's gold because you can be like, oh, and no, you know, my
- 10:05distributor hates me and it up. If you can get the account to
- 10:07go, I want it, and the account goes, wait, what?
- 10:09OK, sure. So yeah, if I can get the
- 10:11account to love you, that's a big deal.
- 10:13That's it because I know talking to them, the owners of Deep
- 10:15South Growler just in, in general, just regular things.
- 10:17And she's like, yeah, I can call up so and so distributor and
- 10:20hey, I they can see what they have, right?
- 10:23I want that and they just, they have to give it to them.
- 10:25So they want it or, or ask for it or demand it kind of thing.
- 10:28And hopefully, you know, raises your demand and.
- 10:31It does. It's a it's pretty wild, man.
- 10:33You can be a distributor for a long time.
- 10:34And if you're not hitting the road, like if you're not hitting
- 10:37the pavement hard, the reps usually don't unless, you know,
- 10:39you're, you know, Jack Danos or something that I mentioned
- 10:42earlier. If you're like the big guys,
- 10:43then yeah. Because I know it's easy to
- 10:45sell. They're going to do it.
- 10:46You could sit in a distributor for like a year and be like, Oh
- 10:48my God, we didn't grow at all. You know, unless, and me and my
- 10:51dad used to think that like, oh, we got a distributor, it's over
- 10:53with. Sure.
- 10:53And a lot of brands think that and you're like, no, you have to
- 10:56do it every day. Yeah.
- 10:57And then eventually, you know, you start getting fans ish.
- 11:01And then then all of a sudden you can't knock it, you know
- 11:03what I mean? And so when we came out, even
- 11:04with this people, we had people hating us online.
- 11:06And then all of a sudden we're like, well, we're selling a ton
- 11:08of it. And then people are like, no,
- 11:09it's good stuff. So I think the last ingredient
- 11:11is time. Sometimes you just got to let it
- 11:13naturally, you got to work your ass off, but you got to
- 11:15naturally like let people go. No, I like it.
- 11:17And that's cool. And like you said, you can't let
- 11:19it sit though either at that distributor.
- 11:21You've got to be out there in front of it.
- 11:22Beer expiration. Date.
- 11:24That's what's. Not.
- 11:25You're. Right.
- 11:26It's a good point. You got to sell this.
- 11:27Fast. That's right, You want it fresh.
- 11:29Yeah, yeah, totally. Because people will look at.
- 11:31But I've learned to go, oh, it's fresh, man.
- 11:33They'll look at the data, go, oh, that sucks because what if
- 11:35it's been sitting there forever? And they'll go, oh, this is
- 11:37gross. No one bought it.
- 11:38Yeah, You know what I mean? And.
- 11:39Somebody gets a beer that's old, and we've had these
- 11:41conversations. Yeah.
- 11:42And they're like, oh, this beer sucks.
- 11:44He's got a whole bunch of yeast in it or something.
- 11:46Yeah, Tyler, you make a bad beer.
- 11:47It's not that, man. It's been seduced.
- 11:49So fun. Oh.
- 11:50My gosh. How dare you make beer?
- 11:52Yeah, yeah. You should leave town dude.
- 11:55You're not allowed. Yeah, you're not allowed in
- 11:57Nashville. You know, can art is such an
- 12:00important aspect of any brand. I mean, we we've talked to so
- 12:04many brewery owners, you know, whether in this area or whatever
- 12:10that have talked how meticulous they got to be trying to figure
- 12:14out like the can art. How many people were involved
- 12:17just in trying to figure out this can art for your beer?
- 12:20Two people so and I'll tell you a funny story about the back of
- 12:23that. So my friend Shannon Duke made
- 12:26all the Boone's bourbon stuff and this is, this has always
- 12:29been what we did. Yeah, we had like 1 tweak once.
- 12:33We've changed the back a lot on the bourbon and now you can
- 12:35actually see it. It's got a guitar pick there.
- 12:37This is BB. It's cool.
- 12:37It's got all the awards on it and it's got a cool QR code.
- 12:40Whatever. This is fun.
- 12:41This has been changed a little bit now, but the beer pretty
- 12:45much it's always been this. We do have a Tennessee Star one
- 12:47on bench. I'm going to do, once we can
- 12:49kind of get more accounts, I'm going to tell them, hey, you
- 12:51know, I don't want to send a whole bunch of Tennessee beer
- 12:52and it's sitting in South Carolina.
- 12:54But then one day I want to take this out.
- 12:56It's already designed well like that, you know, the the ball
- 12:58with the three stars in it. So eventually we're going to
- 13:00change that. But this right here is a funny
- 13:02story. So my friend Paul Kalmus,
- 13:05Shannon Duke started the beer and then my friend Paul Kalmus
- 13:08finished it. He wanted and Charleston just
- 13:10kind of a hippie hipster town, like, you know, indie rock,
- 13:13whatever. And so he thought it'd be cool
- 13:15to put a picture me as a kid, but I have a twin brother.
- 13:18I sent the wrong picture in so that's my twin brother.
- 13:21So did I ever. Tell you that.
- 13:23Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:23So. Greg, does he know?
- 13:24It yes and if he ever pisses me off I'm like, dude, you're on a
- 13:27beer can yeah, so that's called your cola, not like Coca-Cola.
- 13:33It's called your cola. It's like you're light.
- 13:35It's a, what's the term saying? It's like your compliance, you
- 13:38know, to make sure you're not copying anybody.
- 13:40And then it's compliant because people are drinking it.
- 13:42So you have to have all the correct information on it, like
- 13:44the ABV and you know, please drink responsibly and all that
- 13:47kind of crap. But it's also, you know, you
- 13:50submit it. It takes forever to get through
- 13:51sometimes depending who you're working with, right?
- 13:54And so if I wanted to ever change that, I'd have to stop
- 13:56production. It would take a year.
- 13:58So forever. He'll just live on it.
- 14:00I'm not gonna change. And then that's a good story.
- 14:02Sure. I mean, yeah, love.
- 14:03It. That is great.
- 14:04That's a good trivia question too, I think.
- 14:07Yeah. Yeah, my parents, my I remember
- 14:10I had the beers here like 3 years ago.
- 14:11So I've been working my ass up to get I brought my parents to
- 14:13go look. I did it and they just didn't
- 14:15say anything. They go, we got a town.
- 14:17Like I already know, I already saw, you know?
- 14:18So, but they knew immediately. Yeah, yeah, they knew, they
- 14:21knew, they knew. That's a that's a picture we
- 14:23have hanging in the house, so. That's fantastic.
- 14:26Yeah. You've mentioned your dad a
- 14:27couple times. Yeah.
- 14:28You're in business with him. Yep.
- 14:30For both the bourbon and the beer, right.
- 14:32And maybe some of the other things.
- 14:33Talk about that and talk about how great it's got to be be able
- 14:36to be working with your dad and. It is grandma, I was on the
- 14:38phone when I pulled up OK and so it is great.
- 14:41I started it and then but I was a poor musician.
- 14:44And so this is 2015 sixteen 17. I was like, I'm trying to start
- 14:48this bourbon. And the bourbon is a story too.
- 14:50I started that. That's like a whole, I like a
- 14:52big music deal and I didn't take it and it kind of led to this,
- 14:55but I didn't really have the full amount of money to start
- 14:58it. But even though I already spent
- 14:59like a whole bunch of money trying to figure it out, but
- 15:01that's like, hey, man, like I'll match your money.
- 15:03We'll put it, we'll do it. And the first run was only for
- 15:05this was 226 cases, 6 packs. So we did that wasn't for it was
- 15:11only like 10 grand. But I, I was like, Dad, I can't,
- 15:13I can't fully do it. And he said, I'll, I'll put it
- 15:15in there. And so we went 5050.
- 15:17And so it was a rough start in the beginning because my dad's,
- 15:21but I was like chief of ICE, Border Patrol, very like, you
- 15:24know, kind of militaristic and like, you can't talk to me like
- 15:26that. I'm like, no, Dad, I'm just, I'm
- 15:28just saying reply, click reply on your emails, man.
- 15:30Like that's all. Like, I'm not mad at you.
- 15:33And so it took a long time for to get that dynamic.
- 15:35Yeah. And then we raised some money on
- 15:38Start Engine. We're doing Kickstarter, which I
- 15:40would never do that again. We can get into that too if you
- 15:42want, but they take like half of that money.
- 15:44But. Let's really buy into that.
- 15:45By the way, that's how I first came across Oh.
- 15:47Did you invest in it? The very, very beginning.
- 15:50Oh, shit it. Well, you absolutely, man.
- 15:52I think you did tell me it was COVID and not to get off the
- 15:54subject, but it was COVID and I'm just playing around.
- 15:57I'm at home because not. See an ad or something?
- 15:59It was start Engine. I was like, how about small
- 16:01micro investing kind of thing and it got into start engine.
- 16:04Oh wow. And I go bourbon.
- 16:06Hell yes. And it was like 2 bucks a share
- 16:09or something at that time. And I was like, and I got 50 and
- 16:12I was like, I was being cheap I guess.
- 16:13And then I was like, what the hell am I doing?
- 16:14Let's get some more. So I bought another 50.
- 16:16So just put, I mean it was like, yeah, you should get your
- 16:18certificate. I got 2 certificates.
- 16:20Yeah, you remember my dad signed all of them.
- 16:22The issue with that is that legal battle we're in, which I
- 16:24don't care, I'll talk about all day is, you know, they, they,
- 16:29they screwed us more legal battles.
- 16:30So there's a whole bunch of incentives we're able to give
- 16:32people and a lot of people got their stuff, but you know, it's,
- 16:34it just sucks when, when you know, like a fan goes, Hey,
- 16:37where's my T-shirt? Like, hey, man, like it's
- 16:39coming. We've told, we've announced it
- 16:40like a million times. It's give us a, you know, give
- 16:42us a minute. And so there's, there's some
- 16:44T-shirts and stuff that people just haven't gotten yet.
- 16:45But, but you know, there's we, we got barrels for people and
- 16:48hats and it was, it was really cool.
- 16:50So that's awesome. I would say this, man, I think
- 16:51it was the best marketing campaign, you know what I mean?
- 16:54They, they take a lot of that money and then they really don't
- 16:57tell you that upfront. So at the end of it, we're like,
- 16:59Hey, where's our, we raised like 300 grand.
- 17:00We could have done like 500K, but then the rays got stopped in
- 17:04the middle of it because the crazy ex Co Packer and they
- 17:06reached out to me, Hey, this is our money we need, we need our
- 17:08money. They're like, wait, there's
- 17:09another owner? And so they it it freaked out
- 17:11start engine and eventually our lawyers got involved and all
- 17:14these people are crazy. We're suing them.
- 17:15It was wild. It was such a cool thing though.
- 17:17I literally was just sitting on my back porch one day and like
- 17:21again, couldn't work. That's cool.
- 17:22That's how it starts. I was like.
- 17:24Yeah. And it led to you sitting here
- 17:26today because of it, because we had a conversation kind of, you
- 17:29know, just over about the thing. And then, hey, you want to come
- 17:31on the podcast? And by the way, I had already
- 17:33had the bourbon before I even started talking to you.
- 17:36I thought because I was like, well, I'm an investor in this
- 17:38company, I should go get the bourbon.
- 17:39Wow, delicious. But I've already been through a
- 17:42bottle of. Yeah, I'm.
- 17:43Blown away, I'm telling you. I'm not just blown away.
- 17:45Cheers. I'm telling it's really cool.
- 17:46Cheers, man. I don't appreciate you.
- 17:48Well. The goal is we're trying to get
- 17:50a bigger investor to get it to the next level and then we're
- 17:53trying to sell it. Yeah, that guy.
- 17:55There you go. Bigger.
- 17:55Investors, yeah, always, always got to think bigger and better.
- 17:58That's right. It's that guy right there, yeah.
- 18:01Well, we're talking to we're always talking to investors,
- 18:04sure, But you know, I hate, I hate rich people.
- 18:06They just it gets you on the phone and they're like, yeah,
- 18:08totally. And you're like, let's do it.
- 18:10You're like, well, so it's interesting, but we'll get
- 18:13there. I think, you know, it's year
- 18:14seven, man. So I think by year 10 we'll be
- 18:16in a really popular spot, you know?
- 18:19You've got the notoriety out there, man.
- 18:21That bourbon right there, We'll talk.
- 18:23About it. So you had the bourbon, right?
- 18:24Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You're going to have some more.
- 18:27A matter of fact, as we're as we're talking about it, we might
- 18:29as well go ahead and put some in some glasses.
- 18:31What do you need? May as well.
- 18:32Oh. These are uncle Nearest glasses.
- 18:33Well, I got one of I got different ones.
- 18:35I got one of my National Bourbon Society bell me.
- 18:37I kind of collect them from different.
- 18:40Oh, very cool. Distilleries I go to who's?
- 18:44The guy that runs the National Bourbon Society.
- 18:46Jay Spicer and Adam Terry are the two good.
- 18:48Cats. There's another one with a guy
- 18:50named Sinclair. That's.
- 18:52For Taylor, Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:54Well, did your home? You weren't.
- 18:58Working hard over there. Yeah, four of these.
- 19:02I can't say no to your bourbon, man.
- 19:04Absolutely not. You have this one.
- 19:06I've have it all the time too, OK?
- 19:07Or I'll just drink from the just want.
- 19:09Do you just want the bottle? I could tell you that.
- 19:12I could tell you the mash bill on it if you never had it if you
- 19:14had it before. I have not is.
- 19:16Not. OK, well, this this is our cash
- 19:18strength. I feel like I'm doing a tasting
- 19:20right now, home grown Boone's bourbon cash strength doing this
- 19:23for seven years. This is our this is our money
- 19:25maker where because the price point I'll get to that because I
- 19:28think the price points are science too.
- 19:30And especially with this like we kept this at a really good one,
- 19:32I think for the four pack. Yep.
- 19:34So this 117 proof cashmere bourbon 75 corn, which is a
- 19:37pretty normal cut 21 rye for barley.
- 19:41I enjoy rye. I'm not really a big weeded guy.
- 19:43I was obsessed with bullet rye in 2015 sixteen where I was, I
- 19:46was working at cork dorks. I was just like a were you
- 19:48really? I was just like a box guy.
- 19:50I hated that job. But that store loves us You
- 19:53you'll see there's a bear when you walk in there on on on the
- 19:54wall. But but I was like bullet rye.
- 19:57This is cool, but I was like, but if it's a bourbon, it's got
- 19:59to be majority corn. I was like, well, I definitely
- 20:01want rye and I was going to do 7525 rye and then our distiller
- 20:05at the time, the first owner of that distiller before became
- 20:08that other crazy person. They're like, hey, let's do 4%
- 20:12barley. And so that's where the cut
- 20:14ended on. So you're going to get sweet on
- 20:16the front. Definitely the proof you're
- 20:17going to hit the. Proof on the front, yeah, but
- 20:19it's good. But on the back end is not going
- 20:20to taste it because we do secondary finish it 21 rye
- 20:23little spice barley little you know vanilla nutty town at the
- 20:25end of it. But cheers.
- 20:27You're not going to really take take it from the bottle.
- 20:29It's. Definitely rye guy, man.
- 20:31I love rye. I think.
- 20:32I think it's the best in cocktails, yeah.
- 20:34Yeah, it's I love, man. I love playing around that
- 20:38anywhere from 110 to 120 proof depending on the whiskey,
- 20:41because some some drink hotter than others and some don't.
- 20:44Yeah, that is really nice. I'm not kidding, that is.
- 20:46So the secondary agent process, everybody told you about it.
- 20:49So the secondary agent process, it was called Terra, the Terra
- 20:52Pure process, it's a proprietary process for like 30 years.
- 20:55It's no longer around because they went out of business.
- 20:57But that's it was from Charleston and Bart said he was
- 20:58on a piece of it at one point. Then they offloaded it and then
- 21:02they went out of business because they were making all the
- 21:04Total wine because Total Wine owns all their brands.
- 21:07I don't know if you knew that like over 50% of their brands is
- 21:10totally broke. Thanks so much.
- 21:11And so the guy that owned it goes, you know, I'm I'm done
- 21:14doing total wine. Six months later, he went
- 21:15bankrupt, which was really not smart, right?
- 21:17And so, but that that process is still around.
- 21:21They just can't call it the tear pure process anymore because
- 21:24it's, you know, someone owes the patent to it, but people
- 21:27replicate it all the time. There's a guy in Star engine
- 21:28that does his own in Ohio. He does like a like a pressure
- 21:30cook one and then bland does like a steam version like and So
- 21:34what it is is you take the juice in a big VAT the the staves of
- 21:38the barrel and with ultrasonic waves hot and cold, it comes out
- 21:41tasting older, but you can't change the eight statement.
- 21:45But it also keeps it consistent. So most brands out there that
- 21:47are huge and like all if you go to Arizona today, we're gonna
- 21:51we're gonna see high West and bullet and whistle pick and see
- 21:54all the all the normal ones right.
- 21:55Sure, they're all using it, but I don't want to tell you that
- 21:58because the old guy from Tennessee's head will explode
- 21:59for. 40, I've been drinking 40 years.
- 22:01Technology. And so, but we're super
- 22:03transparent about it 'cause you'll get destroyed on YouTube
- 22:04for sure. But but that's what it is.
- 22:07So that's why this doesn't taste like 117.
- 22:09And so the reason we got all these awards and last part of
- 22:11the spiel just 'cause you never had it before.
- 22:14It won tops Forbes platinum LA, double gold New York 2 times and
- 22:18double gold San Fran. We beat Blands.
- 22:19Yep, I got that wrote written down.
- 22:21Hell yeah. And so we think so.
- 22:24Some guy at the San Francisco one, which that's the biggest
- 22:26one, he goes, I think you guys are winning so much because you
- 22:28have characters both of a young and an old in the bottle.
- 22:31Sure. So it's just, it's just, you
- 22:32know, I would say funky, but some guy goes, oh, say unique.
- 22:34That's a better word to say. And so we think it's why it's so
- 22:37unique, you know, But the price point, it's always under 40
- 22:39bucks. Yeah.
- 22:40Frugal had it for 3699. Yeah, killer you, man.
- 22:44It's a killer price point. You know, people go and buy
- 22:47bourbon sometimes and you think price dictates how good
- 22:49something is. That is not the case a lot of
- 22:52times. You sometimes you pay for for
- 22:54the brand name and sometimes, man, there is a lot of killer
- 22:57shit out there at that price point and all you got to do is
- 22:59find it. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:01I'd rather spend 40 bucks on something I'm not sure about
- 23:04exactly than 100 bucks on something I'm not sure about
- 23:06just because it's 100 bucks. 100% yeah.
- 23:09You know, I think some brands think if it if it is more in the
- 23:12retail that people, the customer is not that smart and they think
- 23:16it's going to be better and the customers like no, no dude, you
- 23:20know, but if you see it online a line, you go oh shit, it's under
- 23:2340. If that was 50, you might not
- 23:25grab it, right. But if it's under 40, you're
- 23:27like, screw it, I'll take a stab everything.
- 23:28Is about marketing, isn't it? You know it is it really is.
- 23:30I will say and and what you describe this is a completely
- 23:35accurate it is and delicious. My biggest take away is after
- 23:39drinking it, I'm like, you know what you want more.
- 23:41I mean, you know, seriously, It's luckily.
- 23:43We have a whole bottle. Well, yeah, I don't know if I'll
- 23:45be drinking it all night, but. Taylor's been dipping into it a
- 23:47little bit. He might want a little more.
- 23:50Wait, but then. But then.
- 23:51But then you got a beer too, yes?
- 23:52I know. Yeah, exactly.
- 23:54So. So it's a Boilermaker.
- 23:55That's what we tried to make this, you know, comparison to
- 23:58it. Right.
- 23:59Cool like that. That's that when we told Holy
- 24:01City we like, what do you want? Like.
- 24:02Well, we want a light beer. I don't want, like, a stout.
- 24:04I think you'll have one of those and you're done.
- 24:06Yeah, we have. But if you get this, you might
- 24:07have four. Yeah, but you try.
- 24:09You try to replicate it as well. Sure.
- 24:11Yeah. So, and we're going to jump
- 24:12around a lot of questions tonight, but let's go back to
- 24:16your to your bourbon because you mentioned about the number of
- 24:18awards that you've won, you know some on your website.
- 24:21Is there one particular one that stands out that you were most
- 24:25proud of, of all the awards that you won?
- 24:27Two of them, yeah, so toxic world.
- 24:30In Forbes, we won the double goal.
- 24:31New York. I remember I was laying in bed.
- 24:33It was COVID. I was in Hollywood because I was
- 24:34like, I'm in Hollywood. I'm here.
- 24:35I'm a musician. And it was like a terrible time.
- 24:38I was like in the like, I was right in front of the
- 24:40Scientology castle. Like the dude from the 70s Show,
- 24:43you saw him like crying all the time because he was going to
- 24:45jail. Like it was a weird place and
- 24:47so, and I can get into that too because I was living right
- 24:49there, like all the actors live there.
- 24:51And then it was, I was like, wow, this is exciting.
- 24:53And then COVID happened. I'm like, man, this, this sucks.
- 24:55I'm I'm just stuck in my apartment.
- 24:57It's really gross outside. And then I woke.
- 24:59I was just like laying in bed. Like man, I don't know what to
- 25:01do. Like I moved here for the
- 25:02bourbon. And then I just, I would just, I
- 25:04would just Google Boone's bourbon all the time and I would
- 25:05put California next to it and see if I can store picked it up
- 25:07or something. And I just googled Boone's
- 25:09bourbon and all of a sudden Forbes popped up and go top 6
- 25:12ranking bourbons according to the Double Gold New York
- 25:15International Spirits Competition.
- 25:17I was like, what the And all of a sudden, dude, all these
- 25:19distributors who didn't want to pick us up, they picked us up
- 25:21like the next day. I was going to ask that.
- 25:23I mean, what does that do? I mean, well, it's.
- 25:25So silly. It's the same juice, but as soon
- 25:27as you get that award, yeah, we'll pick you up.
- 25:29Yeah. We'll pick you up.
- 25:30And so now it's pretty much all over the country.
- 25:34Well, and so the next one was the double gold San Francisco,
- 25:36which I was dying to win and double gold is best to show.
- 25:40So that means like that's the top, top, top one.
- 25:42And so when we got double gold San Francisco, we'd be Bland's
- 25:45and even like our summer distributors who were not even
- 25:47that behind it when they picked us up, they were like, oh shit.
- 25:50Like you guys, you guys are actually kicking butt.
- 25:53Like, well, it's the same juice as before.
- 25:55But the cool thing was Canada called us that day and they go,
- 25:57hey, we want to pick you up now. The deal never happened because
- 26:01like Canada's, it's rough. They, they, if you go up there
- 26:04for tobacco or, or any spirit, sure, this is 40 bucks here and
- 26:08it's like $90.00 up there. Wow.
- 26:09I don't know how people get drunk up there, you know what I
- 26:12mean? Like, isn't that crazy?
- 26:13Yeah. And so we didn't do the deal
- 26:15because on it we were going to have to pay to be in Canada.
- 26:17Yeah. I was like, well, I'm not doing
- 26:18it, you know what I mean? I was like, you guys pick up
- 26:20everything else. I'm sure they don't pay to be up
- 26:22there. And then the same company that
- 26:24wanted like, it's like a, it's called the LCBO, the same agency
- 26:27that want to pick us up through that.
- 26:28Then they picked up Nashville Barrel and I'm like, I know
- 26:30they're not paying for it, right?
- 26:32I mean, so maybe we're just small and maybe they thought
- 26:35that we didn't know anything but but those are the two favorite
- 26:37ones is the tops in the world with the double gold and then
- 26:40the double gold San Fran. Do you feel more pressure now as
- 26:43to how do we top ourselves or do you just go steady as he goes,
- 26:47keep on going? Second one, first I was like,
- 26:51we're trying to prove ourselves. Like dude, when we first came
- 26:53out, this YouTube channel called Rocket Whiskey, like post they
- 26:57live in Milwaukee and they post, oh, this seems terrible.
- 26:59But my friends, I, I remember I post on Facebook.
- 27:01Look at these guys like making fun of us and all my friends,
- 27:04like all my buddies were like making YouTube comments like
- 27:06screw you guys. Like it was all this drama.
- 27:08Of. Course, and then it was just
- 27:10like, man, that sucks where people make it's like Father
- 27:12Sunburn. We're just trying to do our
- 27:14thing. But I think when people see a
- 27:15bourbon, they think like, you know, big distillery, all this
- 27:18money. And so in the beginning, it was
- 27:20rough, but now with all the awards and stuff, we're kind of
- 27:23just got our blinders on and people know it tastes good.
- 27:25And now we got the single barrel.
- 27:27And, you know, now we got this. And it's kind of funny, people
- 27:30that never want to try this, but try this now they're gonna go
- 27:32buy this. Well, it's cool.
- 27:34So yeah, I think it's just, it's like being a musician.
- 27:36And Taylor knows this too. Like if you just stick around
- 27:38long enough. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know,
- 27:40Tyler. You know what I mean.
- 27:41And that's that's kind of where I think where we're at.
- 27:43Something's going to happen. Well, it's just, you know, like
- 27:46I said before, I think time's the last ingredient sometimes,
- 27:48you know? Yeah, because a lot of people
- 27:49start music or they start a brand, and in a year they go
- 27:51holy shit, this is hard and they give up.
- 27:52You know what I mean? So yeah, talk about that too,
- 27:55because a lot of people and you see the commercials and you see
- 27:59these celebrities running around and they just stick a name on a
- 28:02on a brand. Some of like, like a like a big
- 28:05artist or something. Yeah.
- 28:05And. And, you know, I don't miss any
- 28:07names, not that they're coming on this podcast, but I like
- 28:11they've got big whiskey brands and they've got big just just
- 28:13big spirit brands. And they're just lending their
- 28:16name to it. They're getting paid for.
- 28:17It they're licensing it, yes. You know, and you know, but
- 28:20you're not doing that. You're actually hands on this
- 28:22thing. Yeah, totally.
- 28:23Since day one. Yeah, well, a lot of people
- 28:25assume that sometimes where they're like, let's say they're
- 28:26just from somewhere else out in the country, they always think
- 28:30I'm a country artist because my name sounds pretty country
- 28:32Taliboon. You know, it's all I'll see
- 28:34reviews country artists. I'm like, you didn't even listen
- 28:35my music. Like what?
- 28:36But who cares what? But but a lot of people, they
- 28:40assume that and then eventually I think when they kind of like
- 28:42kind of peel the onion a little bit and go, Oh no, they're
- 28:44actually running it. Then people go, wow, it's a
- 28:46father son thing, right. And then it's cool.
- 28:48But dude, there's always, I mean, we could talk about a
- 28:50million of them where the artist is on it and the artist is like
- 28:53sober and you're like, well, they didn't do.
- 28:55Anything and I think. You know which one I'm talking
- 28:58about. I do.
- 28:58I do, and there's some of my favorite artists.
- 29:02Yeah, yes. And they're and they're doing
- 29:03commercials for the brand. And I go.
- 29:05Yeah, but you know what, man? If you were that guy, yeah,
- 29:08that's nothing we're talking about.
- 29:09You're like, oh man, it's money. Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 29:11So. The rest of the band is
- 29:12partaking, Yeah, If that's. Yeah, but you know, there's
- 29:14there's some good brands out there that are with artists.
- 29:17But you know, one that blows my mind is which I don't think is
- 29:20that great. I don't care if I say it.
- 29:21Terra Monte I don't think is that good at all, but it looks
- 29:24like Cos Amigos is 20 bucks cheaper and that's the rocks and
- 29:27he's sold. Oh, is it OK, He sold 1,000,000
- 29:28cases. So people are buying it though,
- 29:30you know what I mean? So, you know, I think it also
- 29:33just comes with, you know, how you market it with the artist
- 29:35too, because I think the rock really did market it well where
- 29:38he's like out there in the fields cutting the agave.
- 29:40Plants. He did the thing.
- 29:41Yeah, but some people, they just put their name on it and they
- 29:43go, it's going to sell and it doesn't, right.
- 29:44There was an ACDC one. I remember just going through
- 29:47distributors like in California, I was going, I was flying to San
- 29:49Francisco. I'm trying to get like a
- 29:50distributor and, you know, just hoping to God they would take
- 29:53and they never did. But they had the ACDC 1 and I
- 29:57remember it came out and it completely flopped.
- 29:59You know what I mean? Yeah, the bottle was stupid.
- 30:01It was like a guitar. And I'm like, dude, no bar is
- 30:03gonna put that in their well. Right, he doesn't fit.
- 30:04He doesn't, but. I think they think there's an
- 30:06artist on it. It's gonna sell.
- 30:07I'm curious about there's two, maybe it's, I think it's the
- 30:10same brand, but Megadeth and Oh yeah, Iron Maiden.
- 30:14I have one. I think it might be the same
- 30:16umbrella company and they've kind of got their beer, right.
- 30:18Yeah, it's the beer. Yeah, yeah, I don't, I know.
- 30:20I've seen them marketing like their pictures are on the
- 30:23commercials and things, but I don't know how much involved
- 30:24they are. Yeah, they're probably just
- 30:26getting licensed. So when I used to run the
- 30:27Shinedown studio when they been Shinedown, yeah, I used to help
- 30:30in their place for like 8 years out of Charleston.
- 30:32They've done a lot of my music too.
- 30:34We used to have, they used to send that to the studio.
- 30:36We used to have them like all in them in our window right there.
- 30:38And I, it just, it was just, I just, I think just a regular, I
- 30:41think most of the time that happens, those kind of breweries
- 30:43reach out, that's some kind of deal and they're just
- 30:45repurposing some other beer. Probably so because the artwork
- 30:47is really cool on Love. Because cool.
- 30:49Think about Megan Iron Maiden. It's all the comic books shit.
- 30:52I've got a big old somebody gave it to me like a canister where
- 30:55where big old bottle of their beer came in and it's got the
- 30:58mega with Eddie. Is there symbol on the front of
- 31:01it. It's like A and I keep it on the
- 31:02my top of my beer fridge in the garage because it's a cool.
- 31:05It is cool canister, but that's maybe that's kind of what you
- 31:08and I've had both beers. Yeah, that was a long time.
- 31:10I was like, that was like 2016, yeah.
- 31:13Or some wow I think you can find it like cool springs, wine and
- 31:15spirits. I think you can find the Iron
- 31:16Maiden one in that's cool in the mega death.
- 31:18Well, I mean. Metallica does a whiskey.
- 31:20The Willett? Yeah, Blackened.
- 31:21Blackened, yeah, but they they use guitar waves to age it.
- 31:26When you buy, you know what I mean?
- 31:27When you buy the bottle, it has a QR code on the back and you
- 31:30can scan it. It'll tell you what songs were
- 31:32played to the bottle. They're probably just balling it
- 31:35and it's playing on a speaker. And it's just like the workers
- 31:38like. Playing energy you got nothing
- 31:39else matters and fade to black. And you know, but they sold a
- 31:43shit ton of. Absolutely.
- 31:44They did. We did.
- 31:45You've never been a Burn Beyond or Lateran life in Louisville.
- 31:50I've been to Laran life. Yes, so we've sponsored before.
- 31:52I played Bird and Beyond too, and that's the coolest festival.
- 31:55And obviously all the time the black is there.
- 31:58And Metallica played one year and I I I remember I played Bird
- 32:01and Beyond and then the next weekend's lateran Life, it's the
- 32:04same stage. And I had to come here to play
- 32:05Americanafest, which Americanafest is such a drag
- 32:08sometimes to play, but I came here to to do that.
- 32:11And because, but, but I'm not trying to talk shit about
- 32:14Americana Fest. I'm just saying that they'll put
- 32:15you in a random venue, but you always say yes because it's
- 32:17Americana Fest. So I don't know.
- 32:18I don't remember where I was playing, but I was like, hey,
- 32:20dad, I got to go and we're backstage Metallica.
- 32:23And my dad was like, because he had his pass, because we're a
- 32:25sponsor. And he's like, yeah, I'm guy.
- 32:27Kirk Hammett's right here. I'm like the guitar player,
- 32:29Metallica, you're behind him. He's like, yeah, yeah.
- 32:32I was like, holy shit, that's so cool man, so cool 'cause I was a
- 32:37big Metallica fan growing. Up yeah, so yeah, same man.
- 32:39He's got like a solo thing going on too.
- 32:41He does, yeah. He's got a little solo thing.
- 32:42Matter fact, when they were playing here recently.
- 32:44There's like recently, yeah. Yeah, 'cause they played
- 32:46Thursday, The Saturday opened up.
- 32:48Yeah, on the Thursday. And then Saturday was Limp
- 32:51Bizkit, a nice 9 kills or something.
- 32:52So I had two different set lists and two different opening acts.
- 32:54God, Limp Bizkit but the day. But the Friday I think Kirk was
- 32:57somewhere locally playing like some of his stuff.
- 32:59He did. He did the Gibson garage.
- 33:01That's what it was. Yeah.
- 33:02OK, Yeah, I saw that cool stuff. Yeah, I'm, I'm a big guitar
- 33:05nerd. So yeah, you shred by the way
- 33:07too. Thanks.
- 33:07Absolutely, man. You got to check out.
- 33:09You probably have check the stuff out.
- 33:10Yeah, I listen. To the music, Red.
- 33:11Thanks man, it's good. Definitely, definitely a Blues
- 33:14guitar guy. Yeah, you know, it's funny.
- 33:16I, I sit there and think, obviously you're in a music
- 33:19business and you've toured with a lot of different people and
- 33:22stuff like that. But I would imagine I, I don't
- 33:25know if starstruck is necessarily the, the, the right
- 33:28term, but when your bourbon became really big, were there
- 33:32any artists that you're out there on tour with and all of a
- 33:34sudden they're coming up to you that maybe, maybe had they not
- 33:38known that you did a bourbon, they wouldn't be as forthcoming
- 33:42with you. And they're like, oh man, you
- 33:44know? I think, I think when the
- 33:46bourbon got bigger, then artists were like, oh shit, it took me
- 33:50more seriously. Yeah, because anyone, dude,
- 33:52anybody can make. I mean, Taylor's, this is a
- 33:54studio, sure, anyone can make a record now.
- 33:56So everyone can be an artist when they're not really artists
- 34:00and so. They can do it under their
- 34:01sheets, right, Taylor? Yeah, conversation we had
- 34:04earlier. Hundred 120,000 songs drop a
- 34:06day, right? And so I'm saying is now being
- 34:08an artist is just like so common.
- 34:10Yeah. And so I think when I came out
- 34:11with this, it was like, oh, he's serious, you know what I mean?
- 34:14So I think more people took more serious after this came out.
- 34:17Yeah. Especially, yeah, that you've
- 34:19got this, that you had to push to get that to Tennessee.
- 34:22I'm still, I'm sure you're still striving to get other places.
- 34:24We'll get to that. But not only do you have this
- 34:26and that, you've got a single barrel.
- 34:27You mentioned earlier too that you it's a collab with
- 34:30Bardstown. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:31So. To your point, it's like we're
- 34:33not just laying on one thing, we're not just sticking with one
- 34:35thing. We're going to keep growing this
- 34:37thing as much as we can. Plowing ahead, you know.
- 34:39Yeah, Well, you know, I think it makes it more exciting.
- 34:41If it was just still this, you'd be like, oh, that's cool.
- 34:43Yeah. But now we got three things,
- 34:44which I think that's pretty darn neat.
- 34:46You. Know what I mean?
- 34:47So it's great something really be proud and I'm sure you're not
- 34:49done yet. Yeah, I mean, I'd love to do a
- 34:51rye. I'd love to do one day like an
- 34:55actual aged beer in bourbon, you know, That'd be cool.
- 34:59In your own bourbon barrels. Yeah, that'd be neat.
- 35:01Wouldn't that be? Cool, you got to have the money
- 35:02to do that. You know, I and I wanted to go
- 35:04back to the beer. I mean, I know we're jumping
- 35:06around because you know, you're like, like I said earlier, like
- 35:08the Renaissance man, you do so much, but you know, being a beer
- 35:12podcast too. I, I, I sat there and going man,
- 35:15so you got this beer. It's a pilsner.
- 35:19What else is coming next? I mean, are you are you got more
- 35:22craft beer options coming down a lot?
- 35:25Well, I'd like to do the. I'd like to do the bourbon age
- 35:28thing, but the moment we got to prove this one, because it's
- 35:32been three years doing it with distribution, just basically
- 35:35kind of started up again. For Tennessee, it was 2 weeks
- 35:38ago. But for South Carolina, I just
- 35:41got the whole state and man, we're with a wine distributor
- 35:45that has a beer license and they are hustlers.
- 35:48And so, you know, sometimes you, you get with the big
- 35:51distributors and nothing that freaking happens.
- 35:54So it's just like a, you just got to kind of find your place
- 35:56and stuff. And so now that this is starting
- 35:57to kind of get a thing as on untapped, I saw you're untapped.
- 36:00What do you call it? Brew yeast works.
- 36:04Oh yeah. That's so that's so my that's
- 36:06your home? Yeah.
- 36:07My home brewery is called yeast infection.
- 36:09Brewery. Yeah.
- 36:10So I was looking at it. I was like, yeah, oh, that's
- 36:13him. Yeah, I knew it was you.
- 36:14So when I check in at home, I just check in at yeast
- 36:16infection. But I love Untapped, and then
- 36:18every day I get on there like, shit, we're getting more
- 36:20placements. Yeah.
- 36:20We're we're both on and we talk about it all the time.
- 36:22It's the shit. Yeah, I think it shows people
- 36:24like, you know, once you get it. So we have three accounts, by
- 36:26the way. I don't know how that happened,
- 36:27really. There's three different Boone's
- 36:29beers. I gotta find, I gotta find
- 36:30there's. One called Boone's Bourbon and
- 36:31there's one called Holy City People still posting that one.
- 36:33Then there's then there's, there's the pills in there, but
- 36:35I don't give a shit. People are posting about it.
- 36:36But the next thing, man, I think the biggest next thing is I just
- 36:41need to get this in a lot of bars.
- 36:42You know what I mean? Because we're stores are pretty
- 36:44easy for us because I do tastings like 3 or 4 days a
- 36:48week. If I'm here and then I'm in next
- 36:50week, I'm back in Kentucky doing them where I stand there at a
- 36:52store and go, Hey, taste my stuff and I always sell cuz I'm
- 36:54like I say I'm the owner and feel like, well, it's crazy.
- 36:55And I sign them. And so with this, my goal, well,
- 36:58it's easy. All my store accounts picked it
- 37:00up cuz I go cool, you'll be here anyway.
- 37:02But bars, I'm like, man, I really need to like, if I can
- 37:05get, gosh, 40 bars in Nashville, they'll be buying it every day.
- 37:09I'm gonna go knock on the doors for you and be like, get that
- 37:11Boone's beer. Yeah, we're.
- 37:13Do it putting the word. We're putting the word out.
- 37:14Already. Hey, man.
- 37:15Yeah, hey, yeah. I got AI, got a buddy.
- 37:19He's my friend, he's got. A yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:21I know. I remember him.
- 37:22I met him yesterday. Hey, you know what we got to
- 37:24talk about what we got to have the in depth conversation
- 37:27because we do it a lot on the podcast, the untapped app and
- 37:31the rating system. Yeah.
- 37:32What do you look at? I mean, you're, you're the,
- 37:35you're the OPS player now with the beer.
- 37:37Some dude gave me like 1/2 star there and said man.
- 37:39Punch that guy. And it was at our biggest bar in
- 37:41Charleston. What does he know?
- 37:42He probably don't even like pills.
- 37:44Oh, dude, he's probably just some freaking loser.
- 37:46No, I know. No it you know, but he's.
- 37:48Probably a Red Sox fan. Yeah, there you go.
- 37:50Probably a Cardinals fan. You know Cubs.
- 37:52Fan, You guys are big baseball guys, yeah.
- 37:54I grew up in Cincinnati. I'm a die hard Reds fan guys.
- 37:57Well, I think that that I think if you get at least a 3 1/2,
- 38:00it's whatever, you know, I mean, yeah, you know, 'cause people
- 38:03are just like, how can you always be a five star every
- 38:05time? Yeah.
- 38:06But that you can't be half star like people that give half stars
- 38:09are usually just say I don't like pilsners, don't drink the
- 38:12damn pilsner then that's. True.
- 38:14I think that's OK. Yeah.
- 38:15So people ask all the time, why didn't do an IPA?
- 38:17You know, 'cause I'm an IPA drinker.
- 38:19So you know, you got you can't please anybody, no?
- 38:21Or you can't please everybody. Can't I think you take based on
- 38:23everybody we've talked to brewery wise, you take that
- 38:25untapped with a grain of salt. So it's almost remember it's
- 38:28some classes you'd have in school and they're like maybe
- 38:30sometimes they throw out the high score and they throw out
- 38:32the low score and kind of picked.
- 38:33It in the mid and middle, yeah. You know.
- 38:35Well it's like Yelp. I don't believe all the Yelp
- 38:37reviews. It's just some crotched pissed
- 38:38off person. This restaurant was terrible,
- 38:40you know what I mean? So, but I think back in the day,
- 38:43South Park made an episode about that where people that were Yelp
- 38:46reviews that they thought they were like, you know, incredible.
- 38:48I think now all those reviews people don't really take
- 38:51because, you know, I mean, dude, people, when we started this,
- 38:54they used to go to other competitors.
- 38:56I don't know why they did this. They would give us one star
- 38:58review on Total Wine and so it made a review go way down and
- 39:01like, why would you do that? And we knew who it was, like
- 39:03just some competitors. So that's why I don't really
- 39:06believe in them so much. You know, yeah, it's got then we
- 39:08had one Brewer that so we don't look at the stars, we maybe look
- 39:10at the comments. If somebody throws a like I just
- 39:13said, I don't like Pilsner, so I gave her a low score.
- 39:16Well, yeah, I mean, I I had, we do beer exchanges with people
- 39:20and a while back I had a what was it?
- 39:23The the pickle beer. The spicy pickle beer.
- 39:27The famous pickle. Beer, and who makes that?
- 39:29This one was the steel and I. Had one recently.
- 39:32It was all. Right.
- 39:33I took three sips of it and I said, I can't do this again.
- 39:35But you know what though? I didn't even rate it.
- 39:37I'm not going to rate stuff like that.
- 39:39If I don't like it, you know, someone else might love it,
- 39:41somebody else might love it. And so we've, we've kind of
- 39:44laughed. We've had so many discussions
- 39:45with so many other people over time.
- 39:47And I've, I've got to the point where I'm like, I won't read
- 39:50anything below 3.5 O on untapped.
- 39:52Yeah, if it's anything below that, I just say, you know what?
- 39:55Nope. I'm not gonna read it out of out
- 39:57of due respect. I mean, I mean, if you're a
- 40:00small business guy that that might be something huge for you.
- 40:04So why? So why would you mess somebody
- 40:06up? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:07It doesn't hurt you. You know what I mean?
- 40:09So why? You know what I mean?
- 40:10So just be cool, like, yeah, it's OK.
- 40:12Yeah, it could be. I hope in in your case in any
- 40:15burgers case if somebody leaves a low star or like 1/2 star they
- 40:18put a comment that you can. That way you can just see how
- 40:20stupid they are. Well, the guy said man, and it's
- 40:23our biggest bar and Charles is called Rebel Taqueria, OK.
- 40:27We do a big festival there every year for Labor Day.
- 40:29My buddy Lewis owns it. He dude, he supports the living
- 40:31shit out of us. And he even texts me and he's
- 40:33like, dude, I was like, oh, come on, you know?
- 40:35And so who knows man, could the guy would just be a miserable
- 40:38drunk. You know, just don't.
- 40:40Be I think I'm taps cool, though, because I'll go on there
- 40:42and go, Oh my God, like you've been a do you guys have been in
- 40:44Charleston. I have not.
- 40:46I have. I have been to Charleston.
- 40:48Yes. No, no, I've been to Savannah.
- 40:51We didn't get to Charleston. Commerce.
- 40:53Yeah. Well, Charleston's a big food
- 40:54town. Yeah.
- 40:55And Sullivan's Island is like the real, like, uppity up beach
- 40:58town area. And today we saw Pose is like a
- 41:00famous spot and like, we're in pose today.
- 41:03So I love on Tap because I can go.
- 41:04Oh my God, we're moving. Yeah.
- 41:06Have you checked your On Tap? Because On Tap's got other
- 41:08features too when they would talk about it, but the find it.
- 41:12Thanks. So there's a find it thing on
- 41:13the app where it's, and I don't know how accurate it is.
- 41:15I don't know if people have to put it in there for it to find
- 41:17it. But hey, you want to find
- 41:19Boone's beer within 10 miles or 50 miles or 100 miles?
- 41:23Untapped has that feature. I don't know how it knows where
- 41:26it is. I don't know what feeds into
- 41:27that. That's crazy.
- 41:28But that might be something for you to look at.
- 41:30If you have to be having an account, you got to log in.
- 41:33No, I think, no, I like I can look if I'm looking for this
- 41:35beer right now as a as a just a consumer of untapped, I can be
- 41:38like, hey, is Boone's bourbon around?
- 41:40No freaking way. Yes.
- 41:42While you're doing that, I want to pour another bourbon.
- 41:43Yeah. Which which has been taken up
- 41:45and while you're doing, while you're doing that, which has
- 41:47been taken up more of your time over like the last couple of
- 41:51weeks, months with the bourbon, the beer, I mean, you're
- 41:53checking numbers, you're trying to figure it all out.
- 41:55What's? The the beer, because I had that
- 41:57show, the X&N, Yeah. And it was like over 200 people,
- 42:00which I've never done that before.
- 42:01Yeah. In Nashville, like ticketed,
- 42:04like hard ticket. And so I was freaking out
- 42:06because I, I was trying to get Lyman to pick it up and I didn't
- 42:09want to be like annoying, but I was like, can you please pick it
- 42:11up? You know?
- 42:12Yeah. And they picked it up the week
- 42:13of and they got a truck here ASAP.
- 42:15And literally the day before it showed up and I was like, oh,
- 42:17yeah. So that's what was my main
- 42:18concern. And then now the next couple
- 42:20weeks or make sure all my liquor stores get it and then I can
- 42:23kind of take a breath and then my next thing is like, all
- 42:25right, cool. Let me get.
- 42:26Because what I'm trying to do is prove the litman is go.
- 42:28Hey, it's in, we sold it. Can I get with the reps?
- 42:31Cuz that's always a little hard to get her.
- 42:32Like they call like a ride along or work with.
- 42:34Sure. And so hey, can I come with you?
- 42:36Can I hit a couple of your bars? And when you walk in as the
- 42:38owner, if it's the bar manager or the owner, they always go, my
- 42:42God, thanks for coming, dude. Yes, I'll pick it up.
- 42:44But if it's like, you know, that's another good thing.
- 42:46I'm sure you guys know a whole bunch of brands.
- 42:48If it's like the Rep of the brand, it does help.
- 42:50But like when the owner comes in, they always go, whoa, you,
- 42:53you came to my place like a town.
- 42:55You can't hear him and it and it freaking works.
- 42:59It works and I love work alongs and I beg for him all the time
- 43:02because then you then you got to build a relationship and then
- 43:05the next thing I'll do, I'll come back like the next two.
- 43:07You know, the next couple days, I'll come in once it's in and
- 43:10I'll buy like dinner and I'll buy maybe I'll go to the bar and
- 43:12I'll buy one at the bar a beer. Hey, I'm the owner.
- 43:15Can I, can I buy everyone? And was like, fuck, yeah.
- 43:16Then all of a sudden the bar loves that.
- 43:18Yeah, go, hey, he comes here, man.
- 43:19He supports it. So when you make your money,
- 43:22it's you gotta spend it again, though.
- 43:23Yeah. You know, I mean, but then
- 43:24you're hoping that you kind of get.
- 43:26I always say you want to dig deeper, not wide because you go
- 43:29we did. We went wide.
- 43:30We just went 26 states when we came out with it because I don't
- 43:33know what the hell I was doing. I was torn a lot.
- 43:35And so we got it in 26 states. I was playing shows all over.
- 43:38And then we then we realized we can't manage this shit, you
- 43:40know, I mean. And then supply those states.
- 43:42Yeah, then I they want you to come back.
- 43:43You're like, I can't come back to Nevada.
- 43:45You know what I mean? And so, and then we were getting
- 43:46paid from some distributors, you know, you we took every deal and
- 43:49some people were kind of sheisty.
- 43:50It's, you know, you learn a lot. And so now I'm like, hey, let's
- 43:52dig deep in Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, California.
- 43:56I want to get back in Illinois and I want I'm trying to get
- 43:59back into Florida. They say if you want to be rich
- 44:01in the booze business, no matter what, wine, beard spirits,
- 44:04California, Illinois, Texas, Florida, because there's the
- 44:07most people in the stores there and you can get.
- 44:09And so it's like Tom Segura has a vodka now.
- 44:12The guys from starting to Philly have one called 4 Walls Whiskey.
- 44:15If you look at their distribution, every brand when
- 44:17they start, they do California, Texas, Illinois, Florida,
- 44:19because they don't. They'll make a ton of money and
- 44:21then you can go, all right, cool, let's do another state.
- 44:23Yeah, you can fill in after that.
- 44:24Yeah, I mean, Florida, they sell California.
- 44:26I used to live here five years. They sold liquor and beer and
- 44:29CVS, Walgreens. It's.
- 44:31Wild. And it's 24 hours a day, so.
- 44:34That's a different thing. Yeah, Yeah.
- 44:35So you can, you can just get more accounts automatically.
- 44:37Grocery stores, it wasn't here. Like wine you couldn't buy in
- 44:40grocery stores for a very long time.
- 44:41Yeah, not so I say recently, 567 years now.
- 44:44Yeah well good me ask you this just cuz you guys are.
- 44:46So get your thumb on the pulse here.
- 44:47Then they just kicked out THC drinks out of bars.
- 44:51I've heard that, yeah. Really.
- 44:52Yeah, yeah, yeah. They just kicked that out.
- 44:54And so I mean like, do you guys ever mess with those kind of
- 44:56brands? No, I I haven't, haven't, I
- 44:58haven't done that. I haven't done the non alcoholic
- 44:59stuff, no. I don't understand.
- 45:01We joked about it. I did.
- 45:02We did last year. So we were.
- 45:05It was just a fun thing we did. I did what was called the The
- 45:08Cider and Seltzer Tour for a summer.
- 45:12I'd not really had any ciders and seltzers and it wasn't like
- 45:14I was. Just you're just trying a whole
- 45:16bunch of them. Yeah, it wasn't a report going
- 45:18to every brewery and trying trying of them, but.
- 45:20He didn't do it a second to her, we did a second.
- 45:22We did like a little fun thing. I'm like, alright, beer, We'll
- 45:24try like a dozen or so and then report back on a podcast later
- 45:28in the year. And I was just like, yeah.
- 45:30Yeah, we're not doing that again.
- 45:31Dude kids have it so easy. We grew up drinking like 40s and
- 45:35freaking Mad Dog. What was it called?
- 45:36Mad Dog? 2020. 20 Yeah, kids have
- 45:39seltzers. 2020. They have seltzers, you know I.
- 45:41Mean you guys, there's a I was in frugal today when I was
- 45:44picking up this and I saw just people just you could tell
- 45:48they're tourists right coming into town.
- 45:50They just got into town and they're picking up their high
- 45:52noons and this and cases of this, and I walked by this
- 45:54couple and get the watermelon. That's all.
- 45:57That's all they buy, babe. I don't like strawberry, you
- 46:00know. My God.
- 46:00Man, I just. Don't understand it but.
- 46:03I've yet to find a seltzer that I actually liked.
- 46:06High noon's the only one I like, but it's expensive.
- 46:07Is it? It's 20 bucks a pack for a four.
- 46:10That's the same. I tried the High Noon.
- 46:12I was like the only one that I could, I could go in on a little
- 46:16bit where I'd be like maybe I would rate that on a top was the
- 46:20the truly it was like the fruit punch or something.
- 46:22Yeah, truly's good. Yeah, not too bad.
- 46:23White Claw sucks. They mass produced it, but when
- 46:27it came out it tastes. I think it happens all the time
- 46:28at brands is they start getting bigger and you start tasting and
- 46:31go oh, it changed, you know what I mean?
- 46:32It tastes more chemically. Yes, happens all the time like I
- 46:35think even Boston Beer Company or Sam Adams owns truly didn't
- 46:38we talk about that like recently.
- 46:39So that's. Well, Bud Light had a freaking
- 46:41seltzer for a second too. Yeah, there's remember.
- 46:44What was it? It's the Peanut Butter 1
- 46:49screwball. Oh yes, the.
- 46:50Screwball went all over the place and then but there's some
- 46:53people to try to do some peanut butters and now there's one, the
- 46:56guy from Barkswell Sports, Taylor Man, who I'm talking
- 46:58about. He's got long hair.
- 46:59He just quit. He just, he was just on Theo Von
- 47:01there today. He's got it, Caleb.
- 47:02Yeah. And he's got a tequila called
- 47:04Chicka Chickadee and it's a tequila peanut butter.
- 47:06It's gross, dude. Is it?
- 47:08But I think, I think people are just trying to anyway.
- 47:10He was on Theo Von and I'll give it.
- 47:11I'll give him like, you know, cap of the hat.
- 47:13He was like, how's it going? He goes, it's the hardest thing
- 47:15ever done. I'm like, yeah, cuz it's a brand
- 47:17is tough, dude. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:19Especially tequila. I would not want to get tequila.
- 47:21You know, I think a part of it, and I was going to mention this
- 47:23earlier, you if you can find Drake, maybe screwball was one
- 47:26of these. Maybe that maybe it's better
- 47:28than a cocktail. Maybe you can find that
- 47:30cocktail. Sure.
- 47:31Like something like a Christmas time thing, Yeah, you know, and.
- 47:34Ladies like it. Yeah.
- 47:36And the reason I was going to mention yours is your price
- 47:39point on this thing is beautiful for that, If you get something I
- 47:44love my my shit neat once in a while, maybe an ice cube.
- 47:47I love it neat. But man, if you love, hey, I'll
- 47:49just put this in a, in a cocktail in a, in a Manhattan or
- 47:51a we're no faster or something. It's a $40 bottle.
- 47:54You don't, you know what I mean? Like totally.
- 47:56You just spent 60 or 70 bucks and you put it in a cocktail.
- 47:58You sometimes you're like it's kind.
- 48:00Of a yeah, I see what you're saying.
- 48:01If you buy like a Weller 12, yeah, that you found for 120,
- 48:03like I don't want to put that in.
- 48:04You don't put it. I put that.
- 48:05I made it drink that. Right, you don't put in coke.
- 48:06You know, but if it, yeah, totally.
- 48:08I remember one time I was on tour, just graduated college, we
- 48:11did a show with Avett Brothers. Remember those guys?
- 48:14And then we did some shows with Spin Doctors and Blues
- 48:18Traveller. And then we did up and down.
- 48:19I actually came to Nashville, played the Bluebird, the open
- 48:22mic night, but I got my name got pulled.
- 48:23So I thought it was a rock star. And then we went back into
- 48:28Hilton Head in South Carolina. And this whereas the last show,
- 48:31me and my buddy Tom, we're doing this as acoustic tour.
- 48:33And it was we were having the time of our lives because we had
- 48:35no responsibilities. And so we're just drinking, you
- 48:38know, And so we're playing and I, we see this old guy, older
- 48:41guy. Excuse me, give us a shot of
- 48:45Pappy, like 13 year or something.
- 48:47Yeah. I was like, what the fuck?
- 48:48It was my dad. He's like, hey, came to your
- 48:50show. And then some guy down the bar
- 48:52goes, I'll have one of those and he put coke in it.
- 48:54And we're like, oh, what are you doing?
- 48:58That's the basic law of whiskey. Yeah, there was.
- 49:00There was years ago somebody. Was so pissed.
- 49:02There was years ago somebody I don't, I don't drink Coke and
- 49:06soda. And there was years ago,
- 49:08somebody had bought me a Jack and Coke and I, I took two sips
- 49:12of it and I just dumped it out. I said I can't do it.
- 49:15This is gross. I probably did it 30 years ago.
- 49:17The only thing I do is ginger beer.
- 49:20Yeah, I like ginger beer. Yeah, my favorite cocktail is
- 49:23Kentucky Mule, if it's like that.
- 49:25Like with a soda, but not ginger ale, Ginger beer, right?
- 49:28You know what I mean? So that's my favorite.
- 49:30Scott you know, I feel like we could talk all day with this man
- 49:33about bourbon and the beer, but you know.
- 49:35Taylor's going to stay here till like 11.
- 49:37At 11:00 tonight, we think we. Booked it till 11.
- 49:41Yeah, why not? Cheers to Taylor.
- 49:43Thanks. Thank you.
- 49:44Thank you, Sir, He said. He didn't have anybody else
- 49:46after us. Dude, yeah.
- 49:48I think the guy's single. I don't know.
- 49:50Cheers. Cheers man, this is.
- 49:53Same here, Sir. Cut that cut that cut that cut
- 49:55that cut that cut. That he's like, he's thinking it
- 49:57out right now. No, I'm just kidding.
- 49:59We got to talk about the music because you know Tyler, he does
- 50:03have a new single coming out and by the time it's.
- 50:04Kind of your day job it's. Podcast comes out.
- 50:07Yeah, you're going to have some new music out, man.
- 50:09Drops on Friday. Yes, Sir.
- 50:10Yes, congratulations by the way. Congratulations another another
- 50:14round here. Yes, very cool.
- 50:15Yes. What's it called?
- 50:17Put the hurt on me. Thanks for checking it out.
- 50:19It's got my buddy Peter Keysler is getting out which we brought
- 50:21him in here before. Cool, yeah, man, it's cool.
- 50:24It's a it's a tune. I did my friend Trey Sasser was
- 50:27like, hey, come, I want you to record me.
- 50:29And I was like, man, I don't have any other songs.
- 50:30I just, I just did a record, but that's going to come out soon.
- 50:33But then I was like, fuck it, I want to write this new song.
- 50:35And I wrote it like in two days. And I was like, oh, I haven't
- 50:37done that in a while. And I think I mean, dude,
- 50:39Taylor's musician too. Sometimes you feel like I can't
- 50:41do this anymore. I can't write songs anymore.
- 50:42And then you do it like, oh God, I did it again, you know, and we
- 50:45recorded it one day. And then my buddy Ryan Sanchez,
- 50:47who's my Co host on my podcast here.
- 50:49He he he's he did my whole other record, but this I was like,
- 50:52man, can you like, you know, put your little, you know, pizzazzle
- 50:55on it And he took it and did some cool shit to it from the
- 50:58the stems you did from that session.
- 51:01And man, it sounds kind of cool. I like it a lot.
- 51:03So, you know, I do the song Wicked girl with also Peter Keys
- 51:06on it. And I thought no one's going to
- 51:08like this song. And sometimes you just put it
- 51:09out and then dude, it landed like NASCAR Fox on sports.
- 51:13They licensed it. Modern Blues rock on Spotify
- 51:17still has it on their official thing, Pandora, a whole bunch of
- 51:20cool shit. So, I mean, you know, now it's
- 51:22just fun to put music out. Yeah.
- 51:23And just see what happens to it. And it could be a one off like
- 51:25that like you said, like it doesn't have to be on a record,
- 51:27it could be. It's on the.
- 51:28It's on that vinyl I gave you. Yes.
- 51:30The first track. Yeah, man.
- 51:31Yeah. Check.
- 51:32Yeah. There you go.
- 51:33Yeah, thank you for this. What did you say?
- 51:351 One of 100. Yeah, 1 of 100, yeah, I think
- 51:37that's like 9796. Nice.
- 51:39You have the first track on the back.
- 51:40Put the hurt on me. It's on there so.
- 51:42Steve, you can keep it half the time at your house.
- 51:44There you go, I should have brought.
- 51:46Two, I'm going to, I'm going to start.
- 51:47It's going to start at my house. How, how does that conversation,
- 51:50I mean, I'm sure you you probably have known him for a
- 51:52while, but Peter Keys of Lynyrd Skynyrd, how does that
- 51:55conversation happen that he's going to do this help help you
- 51:58out doing the song. He's just a kind guy.
- 52:00He was a client of mine for my company Artist Formula years
- 52:04ago. Because he's like, hey man,
- 52:05which I get at most, most just musicians are, you know, they're
- 52:09we're like carnies. There's always to call it like
- 52:11you're trying to get, you do a gig and you find a good gig,
- 52:14you're like, but you're always like, it's like, it's like the
- 52:16film industry, like you're doing 1 gig.
- 52:18Like I got to think about the next one.
- 52:19You know what I mean? Because it's gonna end.
- 52:20So he hit me up 2020. He's like, hey, man, I don't
- 52:23know how long they're just gonna be around either.
- 52:24They're still doing it. And he's like, I need to boost
- 52:27up Peter Keyes as a thing. So he hired us to do a lot of
- 52:29stuff for him. And so then eventually one day I
- 52:32was just like, you know, you hired me.
- 52:34Let me, let me like do something for you.
- 52:36And so I was like, hey, you know, don't hire me for this
- 52:38service. Did a whole bunch of Spotify
- 52:39stuff for him. I was like, if you don't hire
- 52:41me, then can you play on one of my tracks?
- 52:43And he's like, oh, done easily. And so he played keys on that
- 52:47first track. And so then for this one, I just
- 52:49texted him. I was like, dude, I got a new
- 52:50track. You want to do it again.
- 52:52And then this time I hired him. So it's just like just being
- 52:55buddies. And he came on this podcast and
- 52:57he's just a shit. He's just, I'm glad to have his
- 52:59number. And I think one of that too, is,
- 53:02you know, with anybody on that kind of level, you know, you
- 53:05just don't bug him. You know, you just kind of like,
- 53:06hey, what's up, dude? You know, you keep it cool.
- 53:08Yeah. Like, even though I worked for
- 53:09Eric Bass to shine on forever, he barely talked to me.
- 53:12And then now they came here the last week, he's like, you better
- 53:14show up. I mean, so I think it's just you
- 53:16got to build a relationship and be cool.
- 53:18And now it's now it's a cool thing.
- 53:19So just naturally let it grow, you know?
- 53:22And also too, like, you know, this time I was like, I I
- 53:25deserved, you know, you deserve to be hired this time.
- 53:27So I paid him full price to play on it so.
- 53:29Is he? Is he local?
- 53:30Does he live? Oh, yeah, He's got a studio here
- 53:32called, like, Stone Stone Stoner Creek Studio.
- 53:35OK. There's a lot of stuff for
- 53:36Yelawolf. He's a rapper.
- 53:37OK. And the same place that this now
- 53:40comes out of Next Century Spirits, they make his called
- 53:42Creek Water. Have you seen that one?
- 53:43I don't know if I've seen. It's like a $20 bottle whiskey.
- 53:46It's one day old. What do you call it?
- 53:49It's the moonshine and light lightning, white lightning.
- 53:53One day old white lightning. And they use that technology
- 53:55told about and they flash age and turn it with.
- 53:56Yeah, that's Creek water. OK, wild, right?
- 53:59Yeah. So anyway, but.
- 54:00And they can sell for 20 bucks, probably because there's no
- 54:02there's not a lot of time investing.
- 54:03Holy shit, I bet that bottle cost them like $2.00, you know
- 54:06what I mean? So they make a lot of profit on
- 54:07that. OK, you got to think about that
- 54:09too, man. Price points a special thing.
- 54:11Yeah, it is. And then, like, when it comes to
- 54:13music, music's worthless now. Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 54:15It's because everyone go on YouTube.
- 54:17Yeah, YouTube is the biggest platform because you don't have
- 54:19to log into it, you know what I mean?
- 54:20So anyone, anyone across the world can go on it.
- 54:22And so music, in my opinion, is people all the time.
- 54:25And they'll bitch about, oh, Spotify's not paying us.
- 54:27It's like, well, they're a publicly traded company.
- 54:30They have investors. They have to, you know, make a
- 54:32return on their investment every quarter, you know, And so they,
- 54:35they just learned how they'd somehow crunched it where the
- 54:38artists get screwed and they're making tons of money.
- 54:40And so that's the model now. So, you know, music's free.
- 54:43You got to do something else to make money, you know what I
- 54:45mean? Well, you know, it's interesting
- 54:46because you were even before we started recording today, we were
- 54:49talking about the platforms that we record on and things like
- 54:51that. And it's even more for you.
- 54:54You're in the music business and how much from the time you
- 54:58started years ago till now? I mean, does your mind just
- 55:02blown how everything has changed?
- 55:04How you go about trying to get get your get, you know, get you
- 55:08out there to, to sorry, sorry, too much whiskey, Steve.
- 55:15No, actually, it's just allergies.
- 55:17No. How much, how much have you just
- 55:19been out there as far as like what you're trying to do and get
- 55:23the word out of who you are compared to the way it used?
- 55:26To be honestly, it's, it's kind of the same.
- 55:28I, I think me and Terry are the same age.
- 55:29We grew up with the Internet and so it's the same thing.
- 55:32It's just the platform changed a million times.
- 55:34So back then I was starting, it was Myspace, you know, And so
- 55:37you just, you just, you just posted all the time in
- 55:39Craigslist was a big deal. I used to get, I used to get my
- 55:42band booked. I was like 16 and get like $5000
- 55:46to go to Myrtle Beach and play like a random stupid gig and
- 55:50everyone's like, what the fuck? How'd you do that?
- 55:52You know what I mean? And so just the Internet.
- 55:54So I, I'm lucky to grow up with the Internet and see it change.
- 55:57I think some artists now they that they're younger and they
- 56:00see TikTok, they go, that's it. I'm a tik toker.
- 56:02And so for me, I'm kind of like, man, you got to use all of it.
- 56:04And then you just, it's just marketing, man.
- 56:06Like I, I don't find it that it's harder.
- 56:08I mean, I used, I will say this, I used to get paid $1000 a month
- 56:11from Spotify and I'm still getting the same amount of
- 56:13streams or probably a little more and I'm getting like 2 to
- 56:16maybe 400 a month. And so that sucks.
- 56:19But when I was living in LA though, that was like my rent.
- 56:21And so I thought I was a rock star.
- 56:22I was like, man, I don't have to work.
- 56:23I might have to be. And so that changed.
- 56:27But no, it's just, it's just marketing.
- 56:29It's just the internet's awesome.
- 56:30I mean, the Internet is probably the worst thing in the world
- 56:32too. But but it but also, you know
- 56:34what I mean? Like people just get so obsessed
- 56:36with it their their brains get all melted but.
- 56:38Negativity and stuff like that too, yeah.
- 56:40Like your anxiety goes up and you know, man, like cuz a lot of
- 56:42people compare themselves and I always try to say that
- 56:45everyone's on a different timeline.
- 56:46And also I, I get caught up in that all the time too.
- 56:48Cuz I'll be like, man, I wish I was bigger.
- 56:49But then you go, where was I last year?
- 56:52You know, I mean, I've been doing music for 20 years, since
- 56:54I was like 16 when I started. I'm 35.
- 56:58And so I, you know, you do compare yourself a lot because
- 57:01you'll see a band that you came up with and now they're on a
- 57:04national tour. But then usually bands break up.
- 57:06So I'm like, oh, that's great. I'm not a band.
- 57:07I'm a solarist. I'm never going to stop, you
- 57:09know what I mean? So, you know, just, you got to
- 57:11make sure that you also enjoy yourself because a lot of people
- 57:14just they'll get like, look at that Louis CK joke where he's
- 57:17like, I I love this joke where he's like, you ever see a guy on
- 57:19the road and he's driving? He's got a garbage bag in his
- 57:21window and he's just like, and he's just like, dude, just kill
- 57:24yourself. You know, like, yeah, I know
- 57:26it's terrible to say, but but like, I never want to be like
- 57:28this about music. I want to be like, dude, you
- 57:31know what, man? How about like just take a nap
- 57:33or go for a run or, yeah, or go to dinner and like, it's, it's
- 57:36all good. Because also the day, man, I
- 57:37think this too. No one gives a shit.
- 57:39You know what I mean? Like no one gives a shit.
- 57:41It's awesome. We're hanging out.
- 57:42But like you guys got other things to do and I don't have to
- 57:44be the biggest brand and then or I don't have to be the most
- 57:47impressive and you know what I mean?
- 57:48Like it just no one gives a shit.
- 57:49Just just enjoy yourself. Enjoy yourself, but like you
- 57:52said, you've got multiple channels, so you can, you can
- 57:55kind of do some things that you want to do too at the same time,
- 57:57right? Sure.
- 57:58You're like, I can do some music, I can do this, I can do
- 58:00that. Makes everyday different.
- 58:01Yes. Yeah, Yep.
- 58:03Where do you spend most of your time, or does it change daily
- 58:06based on all the products that you have and all the ventures
- 58:09that you're involved? In it's it's everyday is
- 58:11different based off like projects, but I spent a lot of
- 58:14my time on my company artist formula.
- 58:16That's OK I made I made that my day job and I'm very lucky how
- 58:20successful it's gotten cuz like you know, hopefully I'm about to
- 58:23buy my first house here coming up you know what I mean off off
- 58:25my own company. That's right, but I've gotten
- 58:28really good at my taxes cuz you will get absolutely screwed if
- 58:33you don't know what you're doing.
- 58:34I mean, there's, and I tell I had a musician I bumped into
- 58:36last week that it was in printer's alley.
- 58:39It was called Fedora. It was, it closed.
- 58:41It was awesome. It was so these killer family
- 58:43that owned it and it closed right across from the Blues bar.
- 58:46Anyway, I met him there and I bumped him at MJ's right across
- 58:49from well, it's right, it's it's printer's alley.
- 58:51It's right next to it. But anyway, he was like, bro,
- 58:53how do I do my taxes? I was like, oh, hit my CPA up
- 58:56like that's my, that's my one thing about running my business.
- 58:59Sometimes I'm like, I mean, I got audited once and I did, I, I
- 59:02took a loan out. That's what it was and I didn't
- 59:04report it, but I got a letter in the mail.
- 59:06I was live in California and I almost like walked in the
- 59:07traffic and said I owed 60 grand.
- 59:09I was like, what the, you know, it was crazy.
- 59:12And so but anyway, it's just, you know, whatever ours form of
- 59:15for sure that that's my that's my money maker.
- 59:18That's how I can go to dinner and stuff.
- 59:19But but you know, I, I, I'll always keep making music and
- 59:23then this is always cool because now it's starting to kind of
- 59:25grow some legs. So if I on the weekends, I'm
- 59:28full blown doing this. I'm not torn every Thursday,
- 59:30Friday, Saturday, Sunday, every Sunday, I'm at frugal.
- 59:33I created my own tasting day. There I go, Hey, I let me do
- 59:3512:00 to 3:00 and they go, we don't do that.
- 59:37I go, I think like the rich guy is there kind of walking around
- 59:41looking Thursday, Friday, Saturday, we're trying to get
- 59:43screwed up. You know what I mean?
- 59:44So like I don't want to really, because I've been there before
- 59:46and they go no, and I'm looking for a high noon and I'm like,
- 59:48oh, OK, nevermind. But on but on Sundays, dude,
- 59:50I'll sell 2 cases sometimes cuz it's just like these guys are
- 59:53like I'm in town from Alabama. Are they don't get they get
- 59:56terrible liquor down there. It's ABC store and they go, Oh,
- 59:58this is cool. I don't I've never seen this
- 59:59before. And I'll sell like, I mean, this
- 1:00:01one lady one time walked in there two weeks ago.
- 1:00:03She bought four of these and two single barrels.
- 1:00:05It was like $400.00. I was like, whoa, you know what
- 1:00:08I mean? You're welcome, Frugal.
- 1:00:09Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Dude, I love Frugal Mcdoogal.
- 1:00:11They they that is such a killer story.
- 1:00:13What's what's What's your favorite store in town?
- 1:00:15I like Frugal's is good. I go to Main Street Liquors a
- 1:00:19lot in East Nashville, it's really close and I buy a lot.
- 1:00:21It can buy single beers cool over there.
- 1:00:23That's. And I'm gonna talk to Aaron too,
- 1:00:24about getting yours 'cause he's a really good craft beer guy.
- 1:00:27I've. Always want to be.
- 1:00:27I've never been in Main St. It's really good.
- 1:00:30I don't know, they've got their, hopefully they'll put your stuff
- 1:00:32in there. They've got a good whiskey
- 1:00:33selection, but I go in there for the beer because I sure they've
- 1:00:35got the latest craft beer and I can buy singles so.
- 1:00:38So what you can like mix match, make your own packs?
- 1:00:40Yeah, that's cool. So you can pull from anything.
- 1:00:42If it's a six pack or 4 pack, you can pull from anything.
- 1:00:45That's cool. Yeah, I live in Rutherford
- 1:00:47County, so we don't have that there.
- 1:00:50Come on, Rutherford County. But yeah, Main Street and then
- 1:00:54Frugal, but also when I get out there, Cool Springs, wine and
- 1:00:57spirits. They're a good one.
- 1:00:58Yeah, I. Really got to get back in there.
- 1:01:00Yeah. It's just, I, it I just, you
- 1:01:02know, there's just another story I need to get back into.
- 1:01:04Austin, Austin is the beer guy over there.
- 1:01:06So if you're looking for the beer guy or it's Austin, we'll.
- 1:01:08We'll get back in there. I've been back for a year and a
- 1:01:10half and my thing was my main stores like, hey, I'm back.
- 1:01:14I'm back. Like I, I, I, I probably did
- 1:01:16like 30 tastings last year at red carpet in Gallatin, right?
- 1:01:20I think it's Gallatin. And so like, you know, I just
- 1:01:22was like giving a lot of love to stories that like, hey, I'm
- 1:01:24back, man. And so I think the red carpet's
- 1:01:27picked up the beer Sinker's just picked up the beer.
- 1:01:29Bluegrass just picked up the beer.
- 1:01:31Colonial, OK. It's a good story.
- 1:01:32I like Colonial a lot. They they have like a really
- 1:01:34cool, like they always have really cool, interesting new
- 1:01:38pics over there. OK, well and then I love Old
- 1:01:41Hickory. OK, you put in that one.
- 1:01:43So Neil and the whole staff came to show the accident.
- 1:01:45I was like, what? I think I'm doing my first store
- 1:01:47pick with Old Hickory. It's gonna be a bar stand.
- 1:01:50It's gonna be a different bottle.
- 1:01:51It's a whole different. No, that's gonna be.
- 1:01:52Those are so cool. I can't wait.
- 1:01:54Dude I have a store pick. I never thought we'd ever get
- 1:01:56that and those. Man, those if that store is
- 1:01:58known even a little bit for their store picks and stuff,
- 1:02:01they are they go what they. They had, they had that Maker's
- 1:02:03Mark one with the eight different staves.
- 1:02:04Did you try that one? I have no one's all over the
- 1:02:06place and it's got 8 different staves in it and they, they age
- 1:02:08it in a mountain. And so I, I bought theirs and I,
- 1:02:11but I thought, oh wow, you guys are so special.
- 1:02:13You have this one. And then I did a whole like work
- 1:02:16along in the East Tennessee for like a week and it was every
- 1:02:18store had it. And I was like, oh, this is just
- 1:02:21y'all, it's everybody. Oh damn it.
- 1:02:23But it was really tasty. Yeah, so funky.
- 1:02:25It was weird, like cherry wood and all that stuff.
- 1:02:28So. Anyway, you know, it's cool you
- 1:02:29talked about, you know, you've been in the music now for 20
- 1:02:32years, and I know on your website, you know, let's talk
- 1:02:35about, you've toured with Sheryl Crow, Hooting the Blowfish,
- 1:02:39Christopher Cross. I'm like, good Lord, I didn't.
- 1:02:41Know who that was when I got that good I'll.
- 1:02:42Bet not. And then I got banned, you know,
- 1:02:44Boot Hall Plantation, you rid of that?
- 1:02:46It's in, it's like my last name. It's in Charleston.
- 1:02:48We we played it there as a wine festival.
- 1:02:51And I got banned for a year because my parents came on our
- 1:02:54they gave us all trailers and his whole band came.
- 1:02:57Like Kiki has been, her dad was the Tin Man, she was the
- 1:02:59keyboardist. And then and all these other
- 1:03:01famous positions on there, they all parted in my like little
- 1:03:05trailer. And it was wine festival, so it
- 1:03:07was red stains everywhere. And then I got I got a letter
- 1:03:09going you're not allowed to come back and do it all.
- 1:03:11And I was like, it was my fucking parents, dude.
- 1:03:13Like, yeah, it wasn't. It was pretty rock'n'roll.
- 1:03:15I was like, that's cool, Yeah. That's cool.
- 1:03:16We didn't throw any chairs out the window, but we we, we
- 1:03:19stained up the carpet. The guy we dude, the guy came on
- 1:03:22there, the guy that like the director of the festival, he
- 1:03:24opened it up. We're all like, and they get
- 1:03:26like, they're like, oh shit. No, I got, I got to tell you I I
- 1:03:31grew up growing up. Chris Lacrosse is a badass
- 1:03:33guitar player. Yeah, they're a little more past
- 1:03:37my era, but hootie and a blowfish.
- 1:03:40Oh yeah. I was the biggest freaking
- 1:03:42hootie and a blowfish blowfish fan.
- 1:03:44I used to manage driving and crying.
- 1:03:45Well, I won't say I managed them.
- 1:03:47I used to help. I'm on the management team of
- 1:03:48driving and crying and they cut straight to hell and Wudo Darius
- 1:03:52Rucker cut straight to hell a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:03:53Yeah, yeah. I mean, I've seen them so many
- 1:03:55times and I always thought, God, what a great bar band.
- 1:03:58I don't know if that's the best. Dude, OK, you know, you know, re
- 1:04:01cracked rear cracked view mirror that first album that like the
- 1:04:04first commercial success one sold more records because the
- 1:04:0890s everyone bought CDs back then, but sold more records than
- 1:04:11any Beatles record because it was the most bar frat boy
- 1:04:15record, you know what I mean? So they made millions of dollars
- 1:04:19like gazillions. Millions of dollars like they
- 1:04:21were the biggest frat boy band. I was at, I remember this, I for
- 1:04:26work, it was in the mid 90s and I was covering an event called
- 1:04:30Farm We know Farm Aid and it was and.
- 1:04:32They did form aid in. Louisville, and I'll never
- 1:04:35forget this. It was the first year, it was
- 1:04:38like 95 when they were a big deal and Dave Matthews Band
- 1:04:41became a big deal. And I mean, there were so many
- 1:04:44people that were just like, Oh my God, Hootie and the Blowfish
- 1:04:48man because they had and damn, I remember Dan Marino, like did a
- 1:04:51video with him and all that. Cool.
- 1:04:54I used to have stuff with Mark the guitar player.
- 1:04:56Yeah. And so he was an adjunct
- 1:04:58professor of the College Charleston as well.
- 1:05:00And so I was just like, I was going to USCI, thought that's
- 1:05:02where he had to go because who? He was huge in Columbia, right?
- 1:05:05Yeah. I was like, I gotta go to USC if
- 1:05:06I'm trying to be a musician. Slowly figured out maybe this is
- 1:05:09not the place to be. Went back to Charleston because
- 1:05:11my loans messed up. And so I had to go back home.
- 1:05:13And I was, I was working at like a couple jobs.
- 1:05:16I was making a record with this guy, MJ Fick.
- 1:05:18And then I met Mark Bryan. He had a competition.
- 1:05:20He's like, hey, I'm trying to discover the next artist.
- 1:05:22I entered into it. He's like, you need to come out
- 1:05:23of my office. And so then we became buddies
- 1:05:26and so he there's a record. I completely lived off the
- 1:05:29Internet 'cause I thought my singing sucked.
- 1:05:30I was really young, but he played mandolin all over it and
- 1:05:33we just were buddies. And so I then I opened up for
- 1:05:34Hootie and Daniel Island in Charleston.
- 1:05:37And then a lot of a lot of I used to go to golf tournaments
- 1:05:39with Mark Bryan. It was wild.
- 1:05:41And I'm a terrible golf player golfer.
- 1:05:43But you know, this the show Southern charm.
- 1:05:45Do your wives watch that? She probably is.
- 1:05:47I wasn't around if she did. It's it's well, are you
- 1:05:51divorced? I was like, wait to say whatever
- 1:05:55my hair. Absolutely.
- 1:05:56Well, cheers. Yeah, just.
- 1:05:58Kidding. Hey, you're picking up what I
- 1:05:59put. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:00I was like, wait, what? Anyway, we went on a golf
- 1:06:02tournament once with mine A. Little more sure.
- 1:06:06We went on a golf tournament once with the guys from Southern
- 1:06:08charm. I don't give this story is
- 1:06:09hilarious perfect. So the guy that Ravenel, there's
- 1:06:12a Ravenel bridge in Charleston named after his family.
- 1:06:14The guy went to prison because he was sold cocaine at the
- 1:06:17governors office. Crazy shit.
- 1:06:19And so he was in our foursome group.
- 1:06:21And so I was like, Mark, this guy sucks.
- 1:06:23And he was on the show Southern Charm, where it's like, it's
- 1:06:25Bravo. It's like reality TV, It's
- 1:06:27garbage TV. My mom loves that shit.
- 1:06:29And so I was like, this guy sucks, man.
- 1:06:30And he's like, no, no, no, he was, Mark's a great guy.
- 1:06:33He's like, we got to be Christian.
- 1:06:34He's a great guy. And halfway through the guy's
- 1:06:37like doing drugs and shit. And Mark's like this guy's a
- 1:06:39fucking piece of shit. Fuck him.
- 1:06:40I was like, yeah, totally. So, So Mark's cool.
- 1:06:44He was, he was a great mentor when I was really young.
- 1:06:46He gave me some really good advice.
- 1:06:48My buddy Box, Rest in peace. He had the biggest DJ show in
- 1:06:51Charleston. I did this DJ show with Mark,
- 1:06:53with box, and Mark surprised me. You knew I was coming out.
- 1:06:57I lived here 10 years ago and then I left 2015.
- 1:07:00I moved here and he came on there.
- 1:07:01He was Tyler. Biggest piece of advice is stick
- 1:07:04to your own. You can be the cookie cutter guy
- 1:07:06and do the Broadway shit or stick to your own guns.
- 1:07:08Do your own thing. And I think you need to do the
- 1:07:09second one. I was like, man, I love you,
- 1:07:11dude. I still have that radio clip.
- 1:07:12I kept it, Yeah. That's awesome.
- 1:07:13So they're, they've always been really nice, you know, and
- 1:07:15Darius has always been, I don't really know him too well, but he
- 1:07:17was always, you know, cool. You, you see him a lot in this
- 1:07:20area probably too, right? I mean, he's in this area a lot.
- 1:07:22I know he does. He just.
- 1:07:23Moved to England. Oh, did he move to England?
- 1:07:24Wow. OK, something must have.
- 1:07:26Happened 'cause he's part of the Grand Ole Opry, yeah.
- 1:07:28Right. Well, yeah, I mean, I mean, he's
- 1:07:29he's one of the biggest country stars in the world.
- 1:07:32He Doc McGee used to manage him. And then that was kiss my best
- 1:07:36bud Sean, who Co found ours forms me worked for McGee and
- 1:07:39then he knocked off McGee a long, long time ago.
- 1:07:43He's like, I mean, you're not really marking me as the Opry
- 1:07:45guy, You're marking me as the Kiss guy.
- 1:07:47With the marketing of McGee, It's but McGee was Hootie for 20
- 1:07:50years. And so then Darius kicked him
- 1:07:51off with the Maverick. And then next thing you know, it
- 1:07:54was like country Darius Rucker. And like it was the biggest
- 1:07:57thing in the world because Darius Rucker had like albums
- 1:07:59way before that. Then we're all right.
- 1:08:01They're like kind of R&B. And they did that big country
- 1:08:04album like 2000 and like 12 or 14 or something, and it was
- 1:08:08like, whoa. Blew.
- 1:08:09Up Yeah. You know, I think one of the
- 1:08:10biggest misnomers about Nashville is people that don't
- 1:08:14live here think it's just about country music.
- 1:08:16And you can really speak on that.
- 1:08:18It's not. I mean, there are so many
- 1:08:20artists that live here that aren't country music artists.
- 1:08:23Sure. Yeah.
- 1:08:24I, I I just want to be very fast.
- 1:08:26No, no, 100% it's but how much time you got left.
- 1:08:29I'll, I'll, I'll pay for the next hour and I don't care if
- 1:08:32it's good content. 8 minutes till 7:30.
- 1:08:34All right, cool. Well then I'll, I'll, I'll get
- 1:08:36the next round because it's good content for me too.
- 1:08:37If you want, we start at six. Yeah, so that I'll get it to
- 1:08:41late. So cool.
- 1:08:42Anyway, cut that. No, it's good.
- 1:08:44So you leave that in, yeah. Yeah, all the punk rock guys
- 1:08:49moved here. So like all like Yellow Card and
- 1:08:52Reliant K all these bands that I grew up with were any, if you go
- 1:08:55see any country, like this week's CMA Fest, Yeah, which I'm
- 1:08:58staying away from all that, Yeah.
- 1:09:00But if you see any of the country artists, they're up
- 1:09:02there. They they got their own thing
- 1:09:03going on, but the whole backing band is dudes and tattoos
- 1:09:07because they're good musicians, right?
- 1:09:09The punk music's definitely back, but but they're they're
- 1:09:12just like I'm available and they they go on tour like you go see
- 1:09:15Morgan Mullins band, my buddy Hoogie, who is the tech for
- 1:09:17Shinedown, really good friend of mine text me yesterday.
- 1:09:20He's now on tour 3 Days Grace as their tech.
- 1:09:23We were hanging out somewhere, 1230 club, and then right next
- 1:09:27to it's like a tequila bar and you saw the Morgan Wallin Band
- 1:09:30and they're all dudes with gauge ears and they're all, they're
- 1:09:32all punk guys. They're not 2 country.
- 1:09:34Stars, yeah, but that's where the money is.
- 1:09:35Yeah, you know what I mean? So but but there's a ton of
- 1:09:37music here that's not I mean it's it's the music industries
- 1:09:40here. LA my opinion it's more here is
- 1:09:43like the studio songwriting. No, no, sorry, I said it wrong.
- 1:09:46It's more the songwriting town over there is like the
- 1:09:49incredible studios are over there.
- 1:09:51This, you know, this, this person I knew, I'll put it that
- 1:09:53way. Same thing with you.
- 1:09:55The person I knew back in the day, she, she used to run United
- 1:09:58Recording, which was Frank Sinatra's spot.
- 1:10:03And it was incredible. We had a dinner there once and
- 1:10:05Eric Clapton's bass player was sitting next to me and I was
- 1:10:07freaking out. I mean, like, it's just, you
- 1:10:09know, that's the studio place where the studios are huge.
- 1:10:11Incredible. There's badass studios here too,
- 1:10:13but I think the more productions in LA and Nashville is the
- 1:10:16songwriting town. And so everyone's coming here to
- 1:10:18be like rubbing shoulders because that's it all starts
- 1:10:21with the song. If the song sucks, you can make,
- 1:10:24you could Polish a turd, but still a turd, you know what I
- 1:10:26mean? But if it the song's incredible,
- 1:10:28you can't knock it, you know what I mean?
- 1:10:30I don't have any musical talent other than liking music and, you
- 1:10:33know, asking questions. But I I've always one of the
- 1:10:36things I've found a cool one. I've told other friends of mine
- 1:10:38that, you know, play drums or sing or whatever and I'm like, I
- 1:10:42think it's cool to see people in other genres either play their
- 1:10:46music or support them. I remember one time being at an
- 1:10:51R.E.M. Concert and all of a sudden I
- 1:10:53said hey, we got a special, special guest coming out here in
- 1:10:55Nashville and it was Richard Marx.
- 1:10:57So we'd lived in Nashville and I was like freaking Richard Marx.
- 1:11:01I was like, Oh my God, I didn't even know anything.
- 1:11:04I didn't even know he, you know, I not saying I didn't know he's
- 1:11:06still around, but I'm going. I didn't know he lived in
- 1:11:08Nashville. Yeah.
- 1:11:10Well, you could buy a house here.
- 1:11:12Yeah, in LA, man, the house. I'm going to get here hopefully
- 1:11:16very soon, probably 2,500,000, you know what I mean?
- 1:11:20But still, that's a lot of shit fucking money.
- 1:11:22But I'm just saying. But like, whoa, you know what I
- 1:11:24mean? So I think I want to move here
- 1:11:25because like the guy, one of the, the fathers, we had the
- 1:11:29band accident, the band opened up first called the Photonics.
- 1:11:32There were these younger guys, they're like 14-12 years old at
- 1:11:35the accident last week. The dad, Keith Nesbitt's a
- 1:11:37really cool, you know, music industry guy.
- 1:11:39And you know, he was just telling me the same thing as
- 1:11:41like, man, when I came here, I bought my house with cash, you
- 1:11:43know what I mean? And so I think you can just, you
- 1:11:45can just really. You get a lot more here for the
- 1:11:48money. You sell something in
- 1:11:49California, you come out here and it's yeah, Texas are lower
- 1:11:52compared. To that but then also people
- 1:11:53that bought houses here in in five points they're like, where
- 1:11:56do I go now Now my house is worth a million but now
- 1:11:59Nashville's nuts man, it's just. Yeah, it's.
- 1:12:01It's insanity. Yeah, and it is.
- 1:12:03And you're right. If if someone's here and they
- 1:12:04want to sell their house and move somewhere else, they're
- 1:12:06gonna move it to Murphy's Hell. You're gonna do.
- 1:12:08Yeah, you're in Andersonville, OR.
- 1:12:09Murphy's which, which I'm not hating, I'm just saying like
- 1:12:10that's what you're gonna do You're.
- 1:12:11Like you can't do it here. Hey Paper house is worth
- 1:12:122,000,000 but. Chattanooga will be the next
- 1:12:15stop and and commute into Nashville every day.
- 1:12:18Yeah, good luck on that one. No way.
- 1:12:20We'll never do that it. Took me I found their Smyrna.
- 1:12:23It took me 50 minutes to get here today so.
- 1:12:25Where was I? Oh, I went to NASCAR on Sunday.
- 1:12:28We drove through Smyrna. OK.
- 1:12:29Have you? Did you see the zebra or was the
- 1:12:31zebra out that way? What?
- 1:12:32The hell are you talking about? You haven't.
- 1:12:34Heard you. Have not heard.
- 1:12:36This Taylor knows the zebra. Well, when this podcast comes
- 1:12:39out, it may be long gone. Yeah, they'll probably be.
- 1:12:41There's a zebra running around. Somebody somebody had purchased
- 1:12:44Zebra, who lives in Rutherford County just.
- 1:12:47Some rich asshole. Yeah, maybe.
- 1:12:50Some rock star. For the last.
- 1:12:52Zebra. So they bought this zebra.
- 1:12:55It's made national news and hilarious.
- 1:12:58And so for the last couple days, the zebra got loose the day
- 1:13:02after whoever bought it, and it's been on the loose ever
- 1:13:05since. It was by the Interstate the
- 1:13:07other day. Like they had to shut down
- 1:13:08hearts of I-20. Four people.
- 1:13:10Like dude. It's a meme on everybody's
- 1:13:12account now. Have you seen this?
- 1:13:13I've never. Seen this?
- 1:13:14Yes. See.
- 1:13:15When you when you go, what the fuck?
- 1:13:16And you're like. My my dentist My dentist office
- 1:13:19in Smyrna today was posting a picture of a zebra in front of
- 1:13:22it like we got a special guest here today.
- 1:13:24That is. So yeah, I mean, it is the
- 1:13:26craziest and. It's trending like crazy, like
- 1:13:28everybody, every business, everybody got that zebra.
- 1:13:30In but it'll post that today, yes.
- 1:13:32Yeah, you're gonna have to go find in.
- 1:13:33Maybe get in the car and go find a you.
- 1:13:34Wake up and be in your front yard like.
- 1:13:38Stupid. Yeah, zebra meat tastes good.
- 1:13:41Man. Yeah.
- 1:13:42That's wild. Yeah, out in Smyrna.
- 1:13:44Yeah, South, actually South. And then I saw I saw something
- 1:13:48this afternoon where they were talking about latest was they
- 1:13:53thought maybe it had gotten hit, but it went off into like a
- 1:13:57rural area. And then there were rumors it
- 1:13:59was maybe down running around like bell buckle or but I don't
- 1:14:02know if that's just rumor, but they can't find it.
- 1:14:05They got there's people that got drones out like looking for this
- 1:14:08Dang zebra. I wonder how much spent on it.
- 1:14:10I know, right? I don't know.
- 1:14:13He puts a poster wanted dead or alive.
- 1:14:15Yeah, I need that. I need it my.
- 1:14:17Sister up in Ohio is texting me today and she's like, it's on
- 1:14:20the national news now this. I have not seen this.
- 1:14:24Yeah, that is so. You've been busy with your
- 1:14:25bourbon and your he's. A rock star.
- 1:14:27Podcast, you don't have time for your stuff.
- 1:14:30I'm out of here. No, no, I but I, I'm trying not
- 1:14:34to drink during the week. Yeah, even though I had a couple
- 1:14:36beers yesterday, my buddy Ryan, after we had a podcast here.
- 1:14:38But yeah, you know, just dude, my hangovers are now two days.
- 1:14:41Really. It's terrible, you know what I
- 1:14:43mean? Yeah.
- 1:14:43And then now, now I'm getting like those depressed hangovers
- 1:14:46where I'm like, I gotta get a job, Wait, I have a job, You
- 1:14:49know what I mean? But like, I'm like freaking the
- 1:14:50fuck out, you know what I mean? It's just not good, dude.
- 1:14:53Yeah, it's not sustainable to. But I love my tasty alcohol.
- 1:14:56Yeah, sure. I mean, it's delicious.
- 1:14:58Why you drink it in the first? Place yeah 'cause you're like Oh
- 1:15:00yeah Then it brings people together and you have a good
- 1:15:02time but I just I mean I, when I was 21 well when I was starting
- 1:15:06this I the reason why it's 117 they're hey, do you want an 80
- 1:15:09proof? I was like, Nah, I want a high
- 1:15:11proof. I want to impress my buddies.
- 1:15:12That's what I mean. Because you're like you're
- 1:15:13drinking 80 proof and you're like, well, let me ask you this
- 1:15:16because I'm now now that this is here in town, because you know,
- 1:15:19this is mainly in South Carolina, the ABV on this.
- 1:15:23What's your take on ABV on beer? It's part, and this is this is
- 1:15:26great for a pilsner. OK, you certainly wouldn't want
- 1:15:28to hire. I mean, that would be
- 1:15:30ridiculous. Sure, you know it would be a
- 1:15:31weird thing. So what's a good what's a good
- 1:15:33ABV then? For different for different
- 1:15:35styles, sure the pilsner is good.
- 1:15:37I would say pilsner could be 4 1/2 to 5 1/2, maybe even 6.
- 1:15:41I don't know why you would have a 6%, but sure, 5.4 is perfect
- 1:15:45man. It's like it's nice and smooth.
- 1:15:48Sure you could drink. I mean, you could drink.
- 1:15:50I could drink 5 or 6. Are these and be and be and be
- 1:15:54fine. Be good.
- 1:15:55Cut the grass, you know, no big. Deal.
- 1:15:57Yeah, some of the days. So this is a good cutting the
- 1:15:59grass beer it is. I was like.
- 1:16:01Cool. It's refreshing.
- 1:16:02Yeah, yeah. You know what?
- 1:16:03Now you think about it, Yeah. I could be out cutting my grass
- 1:16:07and give me four or five and I'd be.
- 1:16:08Good. You'd be, you'd be fine.
- 1:16:09And if you wanted to get if it's like you're going out with the
- 1:16:12boys and you drink this all night long, you'd be fine.
- 1:16:15Sure. You know it wouldn't, you
- 1:16:16wouldn't put, you wouldn't be like.
- 1:16:17Until you start drinking this. Then you're screwed up.
- 1:16:19You. Start adding to it.
- 1:16:20You start chasing. It Scott and I, we just did a
- 1:16:24the this podcast is coming out after the podcast that we did
- 1:16:29where we went up to Cincinnati in Cleveland.
- 1:16:32We did a big takeover podcast of Cincinnati, Cleveland.
- 1:16:36We went up to Great Lakes and on one of the the episodes for
- 1:16:39Great Lakes I was drinking a 14% stout.
- 1:16:45Jesus. No, it was pretty good.
- 1:16:47So isn't there a no? It's 12%.
- 1:16:48I'm sorry, 12. Is there a law with that where
- 1:16:50they have to give you a smaller glass when they serve it to you?
- 1:16:52Yeah. Yeah, and tennis, yeah, there's
- 1:16:54some weird stuff. I don't know if it's a law.
- 1:16:56Some places will hire ABV stuff. They give you a smaller.
- 1:16:59Glass, they give you a smaller glass makes sense.
- 1:17:02It really does make sense because a lot.
- 1:17:04Of people you're going. To wake up and go whoa.
- 1:17:06And also some people can't handle.
- 1:17:07Well, do you guys, do you guys mess with these at all?
- 1:17:09Do not you hate these, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:13So like, so nicotine. So yeah.
- 1:17:16So these guys started sponsoring me as an artist.
- 1:17:19I'm not really. I mean, we love those.
- 1:17:20I'm not, yeah. We love demos.
- 1:17:23They're from Myrtle Beach. But everyone now when they
- 1:17:25drink, they take these. Now it's just nicotine.
- 1:17:28It's not, it's not tobacco. It's just a pouch.
- 1:17:31Here. I'll show.
- 1:17:31You. But is it something with the
- 1:17:32with the alcohol that it mixes and?
- 1:17:34It no, it's just like when people start drinking, they
- 1:17:36start taking it. So when you go to like a urinal,
- 1:17:37they're always in them 'cause people just spit them out.
- 1:17:39OK, I saw a sign there today at a bar that said we don't, we
- 1:17:42don't piss on your Zen, so don't Zen on your piss or something.
- 1:17:45It was something weird. But anyway, I'm just saying this
- 1:17:49is like the newest, the the biggest hit in Nashville.
- 1:17:51Everyone's doing this without drinking.
- 1:17:53People always have them in their pocket.
- 1:17:54It looks like, you know, tobacco.
- 1:17:56Yeah. It's just weird.
- 1:17:57And the drinking culture is just.
- 1:17:58Nashville is just, like, top of the top.
- 1:18:00Yeah. People are just drinking all the
- 1:18:01time. Yeah.
- 1:18:02I used to go to Red Door all the time.
- 1:18:04And now it looks like an episode of like an 80s Aspen movie, you
- 1:18:07know, I mean, like, all beautiful rich assholes.
- 1:18:09And I'm like, fuck this Red Door.
- 1:18:11Yeah. At the Red Door Midtown.
- 1:18:12But it used to be like The Dirty place.
- 1:18:15Now it's all like. Turkey is it cool to be?
- 1:18:17It's cool. It's cool to be, yeah.
- 1:18:19Totally like they got a ripped dive bar.
- 1:18:20That they just bought that day. And I'm like, you know.
- 1:18:23I was gonna, I was gonna ask you, though, not to leave
- 1:18:26anybody out, but do you have some go to breweries in
- 1:18:29Nashville that you like to go to?
- 1:18:31Yeah, I always was a fan of Yazoo.
- 1:18:35What's the other one? My gosh, dude, there's one
- 1:18:39there. What's it called?
- 1:18:42It's got the car on it. I was the bar back there at the
- 1:18:46old location. Tailgate.
- 1:18:49Yeah, yeah, yeah. Tailgate.
- 1:18:50I was, I was a par back for a day.
- 1:18:51I walked in and I quit. I did.
- 1:18:53I was 25. Yeah.
- 1:18:54I was like. Which location out Charlotte.
- 1:18:55Yeah, the old one. OK, Yeah.
- 1:18:57So I walked in and go. You're gonna make sandwiches.
- 1:18:59And I was. Like fuck this I was.
- 1:19:02Like I thought it would be like, do you know, beard stuck.
- 1:19:05But I love Yaz. I think Yaz is probably my
- 1:19:07favorite. Yeah.
- 1:19:08I met the people from Jackal up recently at Mother's Room.
- 1:19:10That's a great bar. I'm down the street from that.
- 1:19:12OK, Jackal by thing. That's great.
- 1:19:14Let me ask you this. What's your favorite bar?
- 1:19:17Your. Favorite bar in town Bar.
- 1:19:19God, boy, God. I used to.
- 1:19:22It's back in the day. They say you're back in the day
- 1:19:25one like what's like, what was the bar that you just fucking
- 1:19:27loved? I love Roberts on Broadway, but
- 1:19:30you know, but that, you know, that's, that's that's if I'm on
- 1:19:32Broadway. Yeah, if you're.
- 1:19:33Yeah, then I'm Broadway. I'm not a big Broadway guy.
- 1:19:36I've got, I've got 2 that I can think of right now.
- 1:19:42I live in Lenox Village and right down the street from like
- 1:19:46Nolensville, there's a place down there called Hapenchance.
- 1:19:49And it's like a craft cocktail place.
- 1:19:52Yeah, OK. That's next to the pizza place
- 1:19:54on right now strip mall, Hapenchance, great cocktails,
- 1:19:57craft cocktails who love that place.
- 1:19:59And there's another one next to Grazon Main in downtown
- 1:20:03Franklin. It's called OB Joyful.
- 1:20:06Oh, I've heard of that. It's.
- 1:20:07It's owned by the same people. It's in the same building.
- 1:20:09There's like one wall, you know, it's like really tiny, it's
- 1:20:12really narrow and stuff. Same kind of thing.
- 1:20:14Great cocktails, craft cocktails and you go that those kinds of
- 1:20:19places. I you love that.
- 1:20:20I do love that I need to. I need to brush really harder
- 1:20:23with Franklin cause Franklin is. Downtown Franklin's cool.
- 1:20:26Yeah, I love there's. A lot of good things.
- 1:20:28We're not. We're not doing as much as we
- 1:20:29should down there. You know.
- 1:20:30There's a tap room down there too.
- 1:20:32There's a little tap, room tap. Room.
- 1:20:33Yeah, a little bit. I've got to get these freaking
- 1:20:34kegs up here. Yep, that's.
- 1:20:36What I I've always told friends, you know?
- 1:20:37You put them at you bring them, we'll put them in the car, we'll
- 1:20:39drive them around. We'll Hey got.
- 1:20:42These in your mouth. Deep South growling.
- 1:20:44You got a keg now? Listen to me go.
- 1:20:46Ahead, Sir. No, I said.
- 1:20:47I got, you know, you get friends, come in town, they're
- 1:20:49like hit Broadway. I'm like, have fun, but I'll
- 1:20:52tell you the one place that I will always go to because the
- 1:20:56history, you walk in there and I'm, you know, I'm a history
- 1:20:58guy. Freaking tootsies.
- 1:21:00Oh yeah. I mean I.
- 1:21:02Just see every everyone from Charleston try to be a country
- 1:21:04star that came up here and lived here.
- 1:21:06They all played at Tootsies and I'd walk in there and be like
- 1:21:10man or the Tin Roof. Yeah, Tin Roof.
- 1:21:12Yeah. Tinder's a chain there.
- 1:21:13There's Tinders in South. Carolina, yeah.
- 1:21:15I used to work down on Music Row, though.
- 1:21:16But you know, we used to always go down Tin Roof, get off of
- 1:21:19work. Yeah, down there.
- 1:21:21The one in the Mumbrian? Yeah, I think that one used to
- 1:21:23rock. Yeah.
- 1:21:24You go in there, it's like a ghost town.
- 1:21:26Yeah. Well, and, and and for me, I
- 1:21:28mean, it goes back. I haven't, I haven't worked down
- 1:21:30there in like 20 years. OK.
- 1:21:31Yeah, we used to go down Tin Roof.
- 1:21:33Off what you do on Music Row. I used to work on radio.
- 1:21:36OK, dude, I love radio. I I can name the call letter
- 1:21:39signs on so many stations. I I'm, I'm a AAA artist.
- 1:21:43So I have messed with rock because my opinion rock like
- 1:21:47Shinedown, good example back in the day, like, you know, Colt 40
- 1:21:52or was it down a 45? Like the old, the old album.
- 1:21:54That's like the big one. I call that butt rock.
- 1:21:57And that's the term I call it like like, you know, it's it's
- 1:22:00not it is active Rock, You know, stations, but it's like butt
- 1:22:04rock was always like, you know, it's five finger death punch,
- 1:22:06all those, all those bands. And then all of a sudden the
- 1:22:08music just changed, right. And so I would do really well
- 1:22:12sometimes when the when the music was a little harder, like
- 1:22:15Eric Bass, he did a song of mine called Gettin High.
- 1:22:17And it's it's more like a Black Keys kind of song where the
- 1:22:20chorus is catchy, but it's like heavy.
- 1:22:22I did a couple rock campaigns where it was all Midwest.
- 1:22:26Because my opinion, what I heard from people is rock is dying for
- 1:22:29new bands. So they're pulling from AAA and
- 1:22:31they're bringing him into rock, into the rock format.
- 1:22:34And so I would see myself charting on rock as an
- 1:22:37independent. He'd be like Hailstorm shine
- 1:22:39there. Calaboon.
- 1:22:40I'd go, that's weird because because I don't have like a
- 1:22:42crazy metal name, you know what I mean?
- 1:22:44But AAA like you know, 9100, you know, but in Charleston there's
- 1:22:47a big AAA called the Bridge WCO, you know, but the but the rock
- 1:22:51one is WYBB. I mean here WROT like KCN in LA,
- 1:22:57they're the third biggest or second biggest AAA and I used to
- 1:23:00mess with them all the time. KX FM in Malibu.
- 1:23:03So I love radio and I think radio is still super important.
- 1:23:07You got to have a lot of money to freaking chart and actually
- 1:23:11you can break a band for sure. You just got a lot of money to
- 1:23:13do it. Well, it's funny.
- 1:23:15So my background was news, so I worked here.
- 1:23:18I actually worked at AM station. It was a station called WLAC and
- 1:23:21I did news there in the station on Music Row.
- 1:23:24There were five other radio stations, the building and one O
- 1:23:2759, the Rock, the River, WSIX, and then the Urban station as
- 1:23:35well. And it was funny because
- 1:23:36sometimes you'd walk down the hallway and you'd hear about
- 1:23:39somebody that was in Rock'n'roll or whatever being in the
- 1:23:41building. And it was like, oh, there's
- 1:23:42Billy Idol, you know, walking that one time.
- 1:23:44It was David, you know, David Lee Roth, you know, walking down
- 1:23:47the hallway and I'm like David Lee Roth, holy crap.
- 1:23:50You know, So, yeah, it was, that was kind of cool experiences.
- 1:23:52And then I know for me, when I first moved here, you know, as a
- 1:23:56reporter, I would be going out and they would send me out.
- 1:24:00There was a there was a funny story.
- 1:24:02I'd only been here maybe like a month in town.
- 1:24:05So, you know, 2829 years old coming to Cincinnati.
- 1:24:09And I remember one day coming in and I looked at the assignment
- 1:24:12sheet and said, cover a Garth Brooks news conference.
- 1:24:17Wow. And this was he had just come
- 1:24:20off a world tour. And I looked at the assignment
- 1:24:24sheet and I actually said, somebody said, am I going to get
- 1:24:26the freaking Garth Brooks? So I show up at this news
- 1:24:30conference. You know, it's an he had just
- 1:24:32come off a world tour. So there's media from all over
- 1:24:35the country there. And you know, I asked him some
- 1:24:37lame question like, are you happy to be to home or whatever?
- 1:24:40But I'd never done this before. I walked up to his publicist
- 1:24:42afterwards and I said, or before I said, can I just meet him?
- 1:24:46I'm just fan, Can I just meet him?
- 1:24:48And he came up to me afterwards, you know, I shook my hand, Hey,
- 1:24:50how you doing or whatever? But I, I got the interview, you
- 1:24:54know, some of the country singers in town, some others,
- 1:24:57everybody was always cool. The coolest person to me was the
- 1:25:03Oak Ridge Boys. I mean, older, older band, older
- 1:25:07band. But they listened to the stage
- 1:25:09and, and there was a guy for the Oak Ridge Boys, his name was Joe
- 1:25:12Bonsall. And I mean that was more my
- 1:25:15parents generation. I listen to music, but he had
- 1:25:18written a book. He came up, he talked to me for
- 1:25:20like 1/2 hour just about who I was sure, you know, and I was
- 1:25:25like, this is kind of cool. I mean, this is like life
- 1:25:27experiences, you know? That is cool.
- 1:25:29Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:25:30There's an AM station in Bardstown where they play music.
- 1:25:33Yeah, I always find that interesting.
- 1:25:34But maybe because it's a smaller market, because there's an AM,
- 1:25:37usually radio or I'm sorry, AM is usually like news.
- 1:25:40Bardstown, KY Yeah, I used to work in that area.
- 1:25:42Yeah, and there's a station we parked next to.
- 1:25:44I was there two weeks ago. My buddies do.
- 1:25:46I pissed off my girlfriend because I was like hey I'm.
- 1:25:49Coming it is. It is rare.
- 1:25:50I was like, I'm coming on Friday.
- 1:25:51And also my buddies, like we're flying in.
- 1:25:53And so we did the whole bourbon trail.
- 1:25:54Yeah. And I was like, I'm coming on
- 1:25:56Monday. But there's a station.
- 1:25:58I used to go, I used to drive up from Nashville to Kentucky and
- 1:26:01do it and we parked right next to it.
- 1:26:02I was like, they play music. So it's kind of rare when AM
- 1:26:05station. Does it?
- 1:26:06Is? It is, Yeah.
- 1:26:07I worked at a country music station in the mid 90s.
- 1:26:11But but isn't the Opry land AM and they and they?
- 1:26:13WSM AM Yeah. That's AM and they do music.
- 1:26:16So, yeah, and they and I don't think they'll ever change.
- 1:26:18Yeah. Well, I think that's what
- 1:26:20they're known for. Well, and I think a years ago
- 1:26:22there was rumors that maybe they were going to change formats and
- 1:26:27Vince Gill showed up at the station, like outside, and he's
- 1:26:31picketing. He's like, I'm protesting, man,
- 1:26:33this ain't going to happen. And I don't know if he was like
- 1:26:37the the influence of it, but it was like, this is the freaking
- 1:26:40station it runs the Grand Ole Opry.
- 1:26:42Yeah. I mean, I think people just know
- 1:26:45you got to turn the AM station that's there.
- 1:26:46Maybe it's better to be the one station that's AM that plays
- 1:26:49music and everyone goes to the AM 1.
- 1:26:51Could be. Because FM radio, man, it is
- 1:26:54hard. Because there's the alt rock
- 1:26:56stations, the rock stations, triple AI think trip.
- 1:27:00OK, This is why I call AAA the spillover of Top 40.
- 1:27:03So Noah Cohen, the biggest artist of AAA because obviously
- 1:27:06he's Top 40, you know what I mean?
- 1:27:08But Top 40 is usually like Post Malone or something, right?
- 1:27:11And so now the Top 40 or the spillover Top 40 of AAA like you
- 1:27:16are a God. Like you'll be sell out the
- 1:27:17Ryman if you're the if you're like the I think the revivalist
- 1:27:19and the rivalist used to tour them a lot, you know, but like,
- 1:27:23you know, trip like to be Dave Matthews, Tom Petty to the next
- 1:27:25big hot band, you know, and so you know what, what's the big
- 1:27:28festival, man? I've always want to play and
- 1:27:29I've always gotten close again on it.
- 1:27:30And then they don't do it live on the green right there
- 1:27:34downtown. Downtown, Yeah, yeah, they used
- 1:27:36to do it years ago. They.
- 1:27:37Haven't done it for like 3 years and I'm always, I know Gary
- 1:27:39Crane, he's awesome program director of Line 100.
- 1:27:42And I'm like dude, what is it happening this year?
- 1:27:44He's like, no, it's not. And I'm like damn it because
- 1:27:46they they can't get a good sponsor to help him out.
- 1:27:48And I'm like, it's always a sponsor man.
- 1:27:49People don't realize that oh, this is huge, you must have a
- 1:27:52lot of money. No dude you got to get like
- 1:27:53freaking Chevrolet to be like drop 100 grand for that happen.
- 1:27:56And Lightning 100 is always been a station that's had like this
- 1:28:00cult independent following because they're not like
- 1:28:03corporately owned and stuff like that.
- 1:28:05And I was, I was part of part of corporate downsizing, you know,
- 1:28:09like so many others in the world.
- 1:28:11And you know, not, not bitter about it or anything like that,
- 1:28:14but things have just changed you.
- 1:28:15Just remind me I have to get my radio blast ready for Friday.
- 1:28:17I forgot about that. Wait, wait.
- 1:28:19I use. I use a radio blast.
- 1:28:21It's the official way to give music to program directors.
- 1:28:23And I use all Access, you know, All Access.
- 1:28:25And so John, Joel Denver, I'll say John Denver.
- 1:28:28Joel Denver Well, I don't. I know of him.
- 1:28:30I don't know. He's a radio legend dude.
- 1:28:32And I used to, I used to go to Malibu to his office before.
- 1:28:36You mean did the fires destroyed all the whole place?
- 1:28:38But I used to go down there, bring pizza and be like, can I
- 1:28:41work with you guys? And they used to give me the
- 1:28:43most best deals. And I, this guy, John
- 1:28:44Schoenberger, he was the the king of AAA promotion.
- 1:28:47And I charted once on AAA. And then, you know, when you
- 1:28:50e-mail somebody and then on your iPhone, they call you says maybe
- 1:28:53block. Yeah, it was Brian Corona.
- 1:28:56I always remember his name cuz Corona beer.
- 1:28:58Brian Corona. He was the AAA promoter for
- 1:29:00Atlantic Records, called me. He was just in the middle of
- 1:29:03like grocery shopping goes, hey, man, this is Brian Corona.
- 1:29:04I go, hey, yeah. I was like, what?
- 1:29:07He's like, how'd you chart? I used John Sherman because, oh,
- 1:29:10that makes sense. And he goes, I'm not signing you
- 1:29:12because I can't do that. I'm the promoter.
- 1:29:14But I just want to say that's awesome that you charted
- 1:29:16somehow. And I was like, oh, what?
- 1:29:17It was super cool. So I love radio.
- 1:29:20Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:29:21So I'll be, I forgot. I'll be.
- 1:29:23I'll be going to radio on Friday with triple AI.
- 1:29:24Got to set that up. I've been out of it for a long
- 1:29:26time. I got out of it.
- 1:29:28But I I just I. Just, you know, sadly it's kind
- 1:29:30of changed a lot. Yeah.
- 1:29:32I mean when we. Radio is not because dude, the
- 1:29:34Internet. Internet fucked it up.
- 1:29:36No, it's funny because we even talked about this like I, I can
- 1:29:39go on a road trip and I can get in my car and I'm listening to
- 1:29:44podcast for the Underground podcast.
- 1:29:47Do you listen to your own podcast?
- 1:29:49I I critique myself and you. No, I'm mainly me.
- 1:29:54Also the industry AF. Exactly that one, too.
- 1:29:57Absolutely. Thank you very much.
- 1:29:59And yeah, I could have my Waze app on and then all of a sudden
- 1:30:03I'm like, well, is it a storm or something I can just put my
- 1:30:05little radar app on? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:30:07Ask Scott how I was the best navigator up in like.
- 1:30:10Just glad he wasn't driving because he would have looked at
- 1:30:12the radar and. Yeah, it's the best.
- 1:30:14That's the best. You're talking about wave,
- 1:30:15right? Waves.
- 1:30:16Yeah, yeah, Waves, waves, Yeah, it's awesome.
- 1:30:19Yeah, it tells you like there's a cop over here, right?
- 1:30:21Yeah, yeah. It was the best commercial that
- 1:30:23years ago and it was the IT was the cop was saw the the he was
- 1:30:27looking at the waves and said cop here and it goes.
- 1:30:29He goes Nope. Are you a?
- 1:30:33Are you a backseat driver? No, no, not at all.
- 1:30:37No, we just went through a hellacious storm and he was
- 1:30:39like, we're almost out of it. We're almost 45 minutes later,
- 1:30:41we finally got. Out.
- 1:30:42No, actually I'm not. I try not to be.
- 1:30:44Yeah, yeah, I never want to be that guy, but I, I sometimes do
- 1:30:47that. I, when I, when I tour, I always
- 1:30:48drive. Do you really?
- 1:30:50Oh, yeah, 'cause I want, I want to shut the fuck up, you know,
- 1:30:52I'm like, oh, we're getting there.
- 1:30:53Piss in the can. I'm just kidding.
- 1:30:54Like no. No.
- 1:30:56We were when I have to because when I go on tour, I pay my guys
- 1:30:59and then they get paid. Well, I I try to pay for most
- 1:31:02their meals I take. I basically create monsters
- 1:31:04because then they go on other tour.
- 1:31:05I had my old guitar. I love Jr.
- 1:31:07Spencer. He's my man.
- 1:31:08He came to Bardstown, oh, the whole Kentucky trip we just did
- 1:31:11where they just showed up and meet him stay an extra day ago.
- 1:31:13You want to stay an extra day, He goes, fuck yeah, let's do it.
- 1:31:15And we pissed off both well, his fiance and my girlfriend.
- 1:31:18But anyway, he called me. He goes, man, you, you dude.
- 1:31:21I just got to tell you, man, you treated us so well because he's,
- 1:31:24he's been a minivan since then and it's still towards me.
- 1:31:26Sometimes when I have a show like in Charleston or something
- 1:31:28or what? I have many different bands I
- 1:31:30have like my LA band, which those guys are, I can put my
- 1:31:32guitar down, they can finish the song without me.
- 1:31:35I got my national band. Well, they're freaking awesome
- 1:31:37too. But I got my Charleston band and
- 1:31:39they're like the Shinedown guys and it's like heavy rock, you
- 1:31:41know? Yeah.
- 1:31:41So if I know if the shows needs that, you know what I mean?
- 1:31:44So I hire them. Yeah.
- 1:31:45And he told me he's like, man, you treated us.
- 1:31:47So you paid for everything because you go on other tours
- 1:31:49and go, I mean, here's 30 bucks, you know what I mean?
- 1:31:51So you got to take care of your guys.
- 1:31:52Yeah. Percent.
- 1:31:53And I like to drive, though, because when I'm getting at is,
- 1:31:56it turns to vacation for them. Yeah.
- 1:31:58And some of my guys, we got to get going.
- 1:31:59We got to go. And they're like, OK.
- 1:32:00We were actually talking about this recently after our trip.
- 1:32:04We we were like on the road seven days together and it's.
- 1:32:09Four days too long. Was it really?
- 1:32:11Was it that? Bad.
- 1:32:12I'm just kidding. It's a joke.
- 1:32:15It's a joke. No, it was, it was really funny
- 1:32:20because I was like, we, we, he was driving on this trip and got
- 1:32:24into a really bad hellacious rainstorm up near Columbus, OH,
- 1:32:29and he's white knuckling it and I'm like white knuckling just
- 1:32:32watching it going. I'm glad.
- 1:32:33I'm not with the plastic bag. Kill yourself.
- 1:32:38We had a few years ago. We had a few years ago.
- 1:32:40We had a few years ago, we went to Cincinnati.
- 1:32:41We had stopped at Louisville tonight and got up early and I'm
- 1:32:45driving and I'm just like, let's get up there.
- 1:32:48And maybe I was a little hungover and I'm driving and we
- 1:32:51hit traffic and my Waze app did not tell me there have been like
- 1:32:55a big major tie up in downtown Cincinnati and I'm like spewing
- 1:32:59every, you know, F bomb you could possibly imagine.
- 1:33:02Sure. And we get into an area and I
- 1:33:05know the your house and get on your get on your Waze AB type in
- 1:33:08this road. If you if, if I can get there, I
- 1:33:11can get us out of this. Thankfully we did.
- 1:33:13So we're those guys. We're not like yelling.
- 1:33:16We're not yelling at each other or anything like that.
- 1:33:18We just want to get the heck out of traffic.
- 1:33:20Sure, we knew if there was some. Child locks on I couldn't throw
- 1:33:23myself. Out of the car.
- 1:33:24I can't take this anymore. Was it the office or it's it's
- 1:33:29that movie where they they they destroy the printer.
- 1:33:31What is that? Oh.
- 1:33:32Office space. Office space where the guy can't
- 1:33:34cuss and he's like motherfucking does it completely wrong every
- 1:33:39time. Yeah, and it goes back to.
- 1:33:42The guy, the Walker's going by him, you know?
- 1:33:44I think it's a requirement if you drive in Nashville.
- 1:33:47So so the one thing I always skipped in LA too, I sold.
- 1:33:51I had a Nissan. So there's a Nissan dealership
- 1:33:53everywhere. I came here, got a brand new
- 1:33:55Nissan because I had a 2018 with like 40,000 miles on it because
- 1:33:59I didn't drive in LA at ever because I work from home unless
- 1:34:01I was doing other shit, you know, and so I'd never
- 1:34:04experienced national traffic and I've never supposed to LA
- 1:34:06traffic because I work from home.
- 1:34:07Yeah and my girlfriend works at the state and then she works at
- 1:34:10Fog St. Yeah, you know, we're all hung
- 1:34:12out and I don't I don't experience it man.
- 1:34:15And so, but the days I do have to travel, I'm like, holy crap,
- 1:34:18this is. Me, I do this every day.
- 1:34:19I mean. Obviously when I'm touring
- 1:34:20different, but I'm home, I don't, I don't commute.
- 1:34:23I work from home, Yeah. And so I'm like, dude, this
- 1:34:24sucks. It's a blessing he does as well.
- 1:34:26It's a blessing to not have to. Go from home.
- 1:34:29Yeah. But I mean, I there was a time
- 1:34:31I've worked the same company for years where I used to drive from
- 1:34:34like like my house out to Brentwood, if you're familiar
- 1:34:36with that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:34:38Yeah. And it was like 9 years and it
- 1:34:40was just getting up earlier, earlier in the morning to get
- 1:34:42where I had to go because if you didn't get out of where I was by
- 1:34:474:00, I mean you were sitting there for like another hour and
- 1:34:50a half. There was, there was one year it
- 1:34:52snowed in the afternoon. There was a couple inches of
- 1:34:55snow, just fell real quick. And I looked outside and started
- 1:34:58snowing and it's kind of like Godzilla is coming towards the
- 1:35:01building and people are running out to their cars.
- 1:35:04Yeah. And I waited.
- 1:35:05Each other down. Yeah, I waited like an hour and
- 1:35:07I went out northern around get home.
- 1:35:09It took me 4 hours to get home and I'm like, I could have gone
- 1:35:13to Atlanta in this time. Well.
- 1:35:15Can I tell you a funny story about gotten the Snow Hall's
- 1:35:19Chop House? You've been there yet on West
- 1:35:20End. So it's a Charleston, SC staple
- 1:35:24and so we set there's four of them in South Carolina.
- 1:35:27This is all and this is coming to it next and buddy Justin
- 1:35:30Roseman in Greenville. I love Justin he's a shit and
- 1:35:32fall for Greenville amazing festival.
- 1:35:33I I headlined that last year with Victor Wooten bass player
- 1:35:36anyway, he's he's awesome but blah blah.
- 1:35:39What I'm getting at is I was at Hall's Chop House and it started
- 1:35:43snowing. I was like, oh, then screw it,
- 1:35:44I'm just staying dude, you know what I mean?
- 1:35:45Because it was, it was around 4:00.
- 1:35:47I was there meeting about this. And so I was like, well, I'm
- 1:35:49just chill. And then down there's like no
- 1:35:52one at the bar and I hear this guy just like maybe 5 people and
- 1:35:54then down the bar and I goes, yeah, I want a bourbon coming.
- 1:35:57I go, dude, I'm a little drunk. I'm like, me too.
- 1:35:59He goes, really, you'll love this story 'cause I really
- 1:36:01screwed myself. And so I was like, dude, me too.
- 1:36:04Who's your distributor? Let me go.
- 1:36:05Me too. So we sat next to each other and
- 1:36:06the bartends were all hanging out and I was like, mine's not
- 1:36:08here yet, but it's about to be here.
- 1:36:09And I, you know, I had my bottle there and I go, yeah, it's talk
- 1:36:12about yours and we're talking about it.
- 1:36:13And I was like, you know, I was drunk, dude.
- 1:36:15And I've learned to like, shut my mouth after that for sure.
- 1:36:18Do you never know who you're talking to?
- 1:36:20Right. And so I was just like, you
- 1:36:21know, some people age their shit on boats like Jefferson Ocean.
- 1:36:24And I'm like, you know, it's it's kind of a silly gimmick.
- 1:36:27It was. I aged mine on the Mississippi
- 1:36:28River. I go, dude, that is so cool and
- 1:36:30like, you know, you know, And he literally walked away.
- 1:36:32I was like, oh, shit, because mine's on the Mississippi River.
- 1:36:36That's where age mine. I was like, oh, yeah, totally,
- 1:36:38dude, that's cool. And and then I came to find out
- 1:36:41Litman owns a piece of it. I was like, Oh my God.
- 1:36:44I felt so. And the bartender's like, you
- 1:36:45fucked up. And I was like, yeah, yeah,
- 1:36:47yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's funny.
- 1:36:48I'm not gonna say the name of it, but.
- 1:36:50You know, you know Mississippi's way better than the ocean.
- 1:36:53Yeah, yeah. When you get those ocean bottles
- 1:36:55it says like Voyage. I know I'm like stupid who gives
- 1:36:58you it is so. Stupid Brad Paisley has one
- 1:37:01called, like, it's got a truck on it.
- 1:37:03It's called like highway bourbon or something.
- 1:37:06And they age it on his tour bus. I'm like, no, they don't.
- 1:37:08You know what I mean? So it's.
- 1:37:09Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's so dumb.
- 1:37:11I don't get the gimmick, but you know, but everyone's looking for
- 1:37:13a gimmick to make your brand. Sure.
- 1:37:15Cool. Maybe some there may be some
- 1:37:17truth to hey, we are trying to age it quicker and we're trying
- 1:37:20to be truthful about it. But sure, it's not really as
- 1:37:23romantic as you think it is. It's not in a barrel sloshing
- 1:37:26around on the on the ocean. It's not doing.
- 1:37:28I think I think OK, like 2015 bourbon really had AI was like,
- 1:37:32what's Angel's envy? What's Elijah Craig, What's all
- 1:37:34this? And then everybody's starting to
- 1:37:36get into it. You go to any liquor store,
- 1:37:37you're like, what are all these brands?
- 1:37:39And now it's harder for a brand unless you've got some roots
- 1:37:41where they just walk right by and they just buy the DH Taylor
- 1:37:44or something, you know what I mean?
- 1:37:45So what what about beer though? Is that kind of like that or
- 1:37:48they or is everyone always looking for something new to
- 1:37:51tracks? I feel like a lot of breweries,
- 1:37:52they come up with their new release because that's them
- 1:37:54trying to like make it more fun. Yeah.
- 1:37:56So yeah, I drink beer. I love drinking beer singles.
- 1:38:02When I go to Main Street, I love buying single the new ones
- 1:38:04because I use untapped and I I want a new one every single time
- 1:38:07if I can get it. There are a lot of really good
- 1:38:09beers out there. This one right here in front of
- 1:38:12us. When I go buy beer, I like to
- 1:38:17get new ones because I want, I like my numbers to go up on
- 1:38:18untapped Word. OK, but not also that, but also
- 1:38:23different. I'm trying different things at
- 1:38:24the same time, whether it be a a sour or a new IPA or something.
- 1:38:28So I'm trying something new all the time.
- 1:38:30They're not always good, but I'm getting new stuff all the time.
- 1:38:32So that's how I like to drink beer.
- 1:38:34I don't think most people are like that.
- 1:38:36Yeah, I think most people will go get 4 packs, a six pack or a
- 1:38:39case of something that they like.
- 1:38:40Sure. But I think when you in liquor
- 1:38:42store, Main Street's a good example.
- 1:38:44They've got they used to have. What's the one?
- 1:38:47Shiner? Not Shiner.
- 1:38:49Schauner Bach. Schauner Bach.
- 1:38:51Yeah. No, it was Lone Star.
- 1:38:55Yeah. They would keep cases of a Lone
- 1:38:57Star has. Everyone wanted it, yes.
- 1:38:59And they would come in there and they would clean up.
- 1:39:02I like Lone Star. And I think that's the thing.
- 1:39:04It's like it's one of those things you can't normally get.
- 1:39:06Coors Banquet's another one of those things.
- 1:39:08I love Coors Banquet, right? Coors Light every all day long,
- 1:39:10right where you want to go. But Coors Banquet's one of those
- 1:39:12things you can't always get. So people go go in and clean up
- 1:39:15on. Yeah, they do, yes.
- 1:39:16I've been seeing a lot of liquor stores lately.
- 1:39:18Posting now that it's summer, they're not posting their
- 1:39:21bourbons. They're posting, hey, we got a
- 1:39:22whole stack of this. Come on down.
- 1:39:24You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 1:39:25Interesting. Get the light stuff, get some
- 1:39:27stuff refreshing. Yeah, that kind of thing.
- 1:39:28So you mentioned something earlier and I'm jumping.
- 1:39:32We're again, we're jumping around again.
- 1:39:33Five Finger Death Punch. Yeah.
- 1:39:35And I love that band, buddy. Hoogie is now their tech.
- 1:39:38Is he? Yep, Hoogie on the road.
- 1:39:40He's awesome. They're doing something, I
- 1:39:41didn't realize this and just so like two or three days ago, they
- 1:39:44are re recording their music. Yeah, OK.
- 1:39:47Just like Taylor Swift. Did.
- 1:39:49Oh, that's what I thought. You're going.
- 1:39:50At exactly she she did the whole thing, re recorded it because of
- 1:39:54the whole. Big machine Scooter Braun.
- 1:39:57They bought her masters, Yeah. She ultimately bought them back
- 1:40:00recently. She got them all back.
- 1:40:01Yeah, that's fine. 5 figure Death Punch is doing that exact
- 1:40:05same thing. They actually have two or three
- 1:40:06releases right now. They have hardcore fans of their
- 1:40:09previous songs. They're doing the same.
- 1:40:10And they even, they even gave her credit.
- 1:40:14Taylor Swift credit as. Like, hey, we're doing.
- 1:40:16This we're doing the same thing because she got screwed.
- 1:40:18Thank thankfully she got her stuff back and she's nothing.
- 1:40:21So they're doing the same thing, which I think is really cool.
- 1:40:23And what's cool about it? It's the same song as you know,
- 1:40:27but they got a nice little twist to it.
- 1:40:29Yeah, Well, I mean, now they're probably different players.
- 1:40:32I mean like they're same guys, but like they play different.
- 1:40:34They got more ideas to it. When I saw Fighting the Death
- 1:40:37Punch, my gosh, it was it was cold.
- 1:40:39So it was like October I think of last year or something.
- 1:40:43I thought they were awesome because one biggest one with
- 1:40:45live music is and I was blown away.
- 1:40:47They had laser shows going on. It's all about the live show
- 1:40:50too. Yeah, like that band.
- 1:40:52They're so. I mean I'm not the biggest 5
- 1:40:54finger that's much fan but man they kill it.
- 1:40:57Live, right? And Ivan's a great front man,
- 1:40:59right? He was up there.
- 1:41:01Wearing like a Tennessee jersey? Yeah.
- 1:41:04That's awesome. They're doing that.
- 1:41:04That's crazy. Yeah.
- 1:41:06Wow, for the same exact reason Taylor Swift.
- 1:41:08It is probably a terrible deal within their, you know, that
- 1:41:11sounds. I'm I'm in a label advance deal
- 1:41:13with all my music at the moment. I don't make any money from it
- 1:41:16because I took I took like a 50 grand advance deal.
- 1:41:20No, it wasn't a record label, so there's no services with it.
- 1:41:22So I just got to check up front and it was the dumbest thing I
- 1:41:25ever did. But I get it back in two years.
- 1:41:29I get all my I'll get all my music back.
- 1:41:30And I was like, and I learned AI learned a cheap lesson or I
- 1:41:33could have I, I had a record deal with big machine when I was
- 1:41:3627. Maybe I should have taken it
- 1:41:38because I worked with because he's got a whiskey too.
- 1:41:40It's it's. A vodka.
- 1:41:42He does a vodka. Or Borchetta.
- 1:41:44That's a. Whiskey too, yeah.
- 1:41:45Borchetta And so maybe I should have done it because I could
- 1:41:47have been friends with him and that could have been a cool
- 1:41:49relationship, but I didn't do it.
- 1:41:50But but you know, those record label deals, man, if you are not
- 1:41:54a big like OK country, My buddy Arles, he was a he was a guest
- 1:41:57on him. He was our first one.
- 1:41:59He got Jimmie Johnson's first record deal at RCA.
- 1:42:03He's still his tour manager. Jamie Johnson has never had
- 1:42:05like, a lot of radio, cassette radio success.
- 1:42:08But he is this huge artist. If someone wanted to.
- 1:42:11I mean, he did have record deals.
- 1:42:12He did. He definitely charted #1A lot of
- 1:42:14times. But you don't hear his music on
- 1:42:16radio all the time, I'm saying. And so if you're this big artist
- 1:42:19where like, you have so much more to like, you know,
- 1:42:22leverage, you know what I mean? But when you're a younger
- 1:42:23artist, yeah, you're taking the deal because you're like, Oh my
- 1:42:25God, MTV or whatever you're thinking of.
- 1:42:27You're like, I'll be famous. And so the deals are always
- 1:42:29terrible. They're always bad that you, the
- 1:42:31artists always get screwed because it's the music.
- 1:42:33Business. Yep.
- 1:42:34And as I'm thinking of it, I think what happened was just
- 1:42:37like they they sold their masters.
- 1:42:40Whoever owned this just sold the masters out for underneath.
- 1:42:42You never want to sell your master, right?
- 1:42:43You never want to sell your master.
- 1:42:44But the but the distributor or the the label just sold it out
- 1:42:47from under where they had no option to even.
- 1:42:48Buy it. Yeah, because now it's coming
- 1:42:50into music is investment groups. So like, you know, what's the
- 1:42:54guy from Jersey? Jon Bon Jovi.
- 1:42:57No, no. Springsteen.
- 1:42:59Springsteen. You know, he sold his stuff for
- 1:43:00reason. Now he's a billionaire, you know
- 1:43:02what I mean? And so now, like the Tom Delong
- 1:43:04from blink 182, he sold his masters for like half a billion
- 1:43:07because he needed it for his like crazy alien company that's
- 1:43:11going to start shooting me. And so he needed the money.
- 1:43:13I mean, and so now that's coming into music.
- 1:43:16And so that's that's why it's all chained.
- 1:43:17We're like, wait, we I think what it is is these invested
- 1:43:20companies. Can they go we got to get
- 1:43:22something for investors Hey, we just bought some masters from
- 1:43:24this from this record company. You know what?
- 1:43:26I. Mean so that's but they can they
- 1:43:27can do what? Put them on commercials and put
- 1:43:29them in the movies because they got to get a, they got to get a
- 1:43:31sinks. Sinks.
- 1:43:32Sinks is the biggest thing in the world if you want to make
- 1:43:35money in music, touring and then sinks 100%.
- 1:43:38Like when I got the Fox Sports NASCAR one, I remember I was
- 1:43:40with my parents. James Farrell, my buddy, he's
- 1:43:43been my bass player in my LA band forever and out of
- 1:43:45Charleston. I was with him.
- 1:43:47I was like my parents. I was just chilling out.
- 1:43:49I was like, I just got this e-mail from Fox Sports.
- 1:43:50Holy shit. And my dad, my dad just being
- 1:43:52like a dad, asked for more money.
- 1:43:55And so I was like, I was like, I want more money.
- 1:43:57And literally they responded back like, take it or not, like
- 1:43:59because I had no over leverage, you know what I mean?
- 1:44:01Yeah. And so I got like 1200 bucks
- 1:44:03each time they use it, which it added up.
- 1:44:05But I'm just saying Syncs is the best because every time it was
- 1:44:07opening day for NASCAR, every time it was opening for NASCAR,
- 1:44:09they use it on TV, OK. You got paid every time, every
- 1:44:11time. And then now I still get a
- 1:44:13residual from BMI. That's my pro BMI ass kept CSEC.
- 1:44:17Those are like the three biggest ones.
- 1:44:18But do you want to make money on that?
- 1:44:20It's it's syncs and video games. Like if you get a song in like
- 1:44:22FIFA world sports, like you're, you're a millionaire, you know,
- 1:44:25it's crazy. So that's the biggest thing that
- 1:44:27syncs, but it's hard to get it. It's really hard to get a sync.
- 1:44:30Somebody's got AI would think somebody behind the scenes
- 1:44:32marketing something has to put those together and find a random
- 1:44:36song or find something. I think that works perfectly.
- 1:44:38It's like a champion, it's like a distributor.
- 1:44:39They have to champion you. You can get a a sync deal and I
- 1:44:43have many of them and I've gotten a couple weird ones.
- 1:44:48They paid like 400 bucks. You know what I mean?
- 1:44:50But if I had a big guy, well, actually I had a big one years
- 1:44:53ago and that's how screw the music industry is.
- 1:44:55I took the YouTube deal out of Tune Core, which is a
- 1:44:58distribution company, which I still have my back catalog on
- 1:45:01them. I click the YouTube button and
- 1:45:03this is a big, this is a huge thing in the music industry.
- 1:45:05Back in the day, if you let someone third party you're
- 1:45:08publishing, that means they control all your sync deals.
- 1:45:12And so I had to deal with Lionsgate Films in 2017 actually
- 1:45:14with this song Front Page Show on the back of that.
- 1:45:18I couldn't get it because Tune Core owned it and it was like 10
- 1:45:20grand. And I was so poor living here
- 1:45:22when I was 25. And that would have changed my
- 1:45:24life, you know? I mean, and so syncs are huge,
- 1:45:27you know, I mean, and so you always want a non exclusive
- 1:45:30deal. You can take an exclusive deal.
- 1:45:32That means you can only work with that sync Rep.
- 1:45:34And then guess what man, you can be going up and the syncrop
- 1:45:37leaves and no one gives a fuck about.
- 1:45:38Right. You're right.
- 1:45:38You know what I mean. Yeah.
- 1:45:39And so the non exclusive gets you out to every no.
- 1:45:41Exclusive. You can just sign with anybody.
- 1:45:42Yeah, OK. And that's how you should always
- 1:45:43do it. And and now they're starting to
- 1:45:44realize no one's gonna take a deal unless it's not exclusive.
- 1:45:46Yeah, You mean. But back then that the major.
- 1:45:48You put stars in your eyes. Oh, exclusive deal.
- 1:45:51I mean, you're gonna care about me.
- 1:45:52And you signed it. And then then you screwed
- 1:45:53yourself. 10 minutes. Later.
- 1:45:54Whatever. And you're like, anything
- 1:45:56happening and like, oh, he left. You're like, oh shit, what the
- 1:45:59fuck? Yeah.
- 1:45:59And then and then and they're like, well, you got a contract,
- 1:46:01you can't leave. So it, it's crazy, man.
- 1:46:02They're just gonna you never want to sell your master for
- 1:46:04sure, never want to do that. And I, and I did not do that
- 1:46:07with my label advance. It's just on based off sales.
- 1:46:10You know what I mean? So they I own my master.
- 1:46:12I can do what I want with it. But that was the deal I took,
- 1:46:14you know what I mean? So here, a lot of kids come here
- 1:46:16from Ohio or some shit and they're like, I want to be a
- 1:46:18star and they'll sign the dotted line.
- 1:46:20You know, Tootsies and all those bars on Broadway, They mess with
- 1:46:24all those players on there and, and tootsies got called out.
- 1:46:26I think I don't care what I talk about.
- 1:46:28I don't, I think it was Tootsies.
- 1:46:29I could be wrong. Let's just say it's one of the
- 1:46:31bars on on Broadway. They were given their artists,
- 1:46:34their management deals and go, we're going to manage you and
- 1:46:37you can't work with anybody because they thought they were
- 1:46:39creating artists and bands were signing it.
- 1:46:41And then a regular becoming want to sign and go No, you're
- 1:46:43signing Tootsies crazy. Yeah, what would tootsies do
- 1:46:46with? That I don't know if there's
- 1:46:47tootsies. Sorry if I was wrong.
- 1:46:48With that particular place. One of their, they just thought
- 1:46:51like, hey, we're creating you as an artist.
- 1:46:52You belong to us now, yeah. Crazy if they got big meanwhile
- 1:46:56they weren't doing anything for the.
- 1:46:57Artist. Yeah, yeah, none.
- 1:46:58But they owned you. Yeah.
- 1:46:59I mean, in case you're looking at the music.
- 1:47:01But you know, man, you can always get a lawyer.
- 1:47:02A contract can always get broken.
- 1:47:04Yeah, I mean, sure, cost you money.
- 1:47:05Yeah, but yeah, cost you money and it usually hurts.
- 1:47:08Exactly. You had a fun thing.
- 1:47:10You've had a lot of fun things, I'm sure in your life, but and I
- 1:47:12love the show Vice Principals. Yeah, I don't know what you're
- 1:47:16talking about, dude. That clip went viral.
- 1:47:17I love this. Statement I didn't know it was
- 1:47:20you until you had posted something about it recently.
- 1:47:22So the show Vice Principals on HBO with Danny McBride, Walton
- 1:47:26Goggins. How funny.
- 1:47:28Funny clip. Those two together, amazing.
- 1:47:31Rachel Johnson. He was, so he.
- 1:47:34Danny McBride lives in Charleston.
- 1:47:36Does he leave? Yeah.
- 1:47:36That was all filmed in Charleston.
- 1:47:37That's right, because he moved down there to do shoot the
- 1:47:39whole. Because there's a tax credit
- 1:47:41that wasn't Forrest Gump. That's why they filmed it there.
- 1:47:43OK. Yeah.
- 1:47:44And Dan O'bride has a tequila we're about to put on a show in
- 1:47:47Charleston with it's called Don Gotto Tequila.
- 1:47:50It's got like the the what's what's up with Jack Black?
- 1:47:53What's the movie you did where he's like a priest and Nacho
- 1:47:57Libre. Oh, OK.
- 1:47:58And they're all and they're all fighting with all the mask on
- 1:48:00it. And so that's that's that's the
- 1:48:01Dan O'bride's. But go ahead.
- 1:48:02OK. So.
- 1:48:03Yeah. Alright, that's awesome.
- 1:48:04OK, so I didn't know this. I know the show.
- 1:48:07You put a post out. I don't know, a month, maybe two
- 1:48:09months ago maybe. Maybe.
- 1:48:11And you're in the show, you get to yell at Walton Goggins.
- 1:48:14So. You do deal with the scene is so
- 1:48:17that he's. In like a carnival or something.
- 1:48:18You explained it. You're there.
- 1:48:19So that it's it's a it's a high school ICER on he runs track and
- 1:48:22cross country. I used to run there.
- 1:48:25I think I had my best PR time there too, man.
- 1:48:28It was my my mile was a Craig if I were wrong, 5 minutes fast,
- 1:48:32right. So I was a 440, but I but I was
- 1:48:36I was 1544050A world record. But no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:48:42Like right. 5 minutes is fast, right?
- 1:48:43Yeah, yes. So then was a fight.
- 1:48:45Was it a 540? No, no, no, no.
- 1:48:47I did like a 440 mile. He was fast.
- 1:48:50That's Olympic. No, no, no, I I swear to God did
- 1:48:53like a 441 time but it was during cross but was during.
- 1:48:57Hey, there's alcohol involved. He was.
- 1:48:58He was fast, but it was during cross country, so it wasn't my
- 1:49:00mile. It was like they clicked it in
- 1:49:02at that. And I was like, Oh my God.
- 1:49:04You know, they could have been. They could have been wrong.
- 1:49:06I swear to God, Taylor, don't make me feel bad about it.
- 1:49:08He's. Going to look at us.
- 1:49:09It's not Olympic. All the guys in South, we're
- 1:49:11doing like 4 fifties anyway. Whatever Tyler, we'll move on
- 1:49:14from it. I swear to.
- 1:49:16Backing them up. You know, you know, man, I'm
- 1:49:17going to, I'm going to look it up and find it and then we're
- 1:49:19going to fight. No, Anyway, so I did.
- 1:49:22I did a really fast mile there and I was like, Oh my God, we're
- 1:49:24back at the track and what the scene was is they're fighting
- 1:49:29over a cooler with acid in it. It's a silly show.
- 1:49:32And they then they they don't want to spike the other team
- 1:49:34that they so they feel bad about it, right.
- 1:49:35So him and Daniel Bryan Wong guns are fighting over it.
- 1:49:37And then it goes on them. They go, Oh my God, we got to
- 1:49:40get out here. Absorbs through the skin.
- 1:49:41And so they're tripping on acid, walking out.
- 1:49:43And so I was an extra. My twin brother was the casting
- 1:49:46director and so he's like, hey man, you're about to move to
- 1:49:49Nashville. If you need a gig, come on down.
- 1:49:51You could be an extra. And so my first day on set, they
- 1:49:54go, hey, you guys are twins. We need people the same height
- 1:49:56for the scene. So I got upgraded to an actual
- 1:49:59actor. And so all the extras.
- 1:50:00Charles is not a big film area. So everyone there is like, I'm
- 1:50:05an extra. I might make it.
- 1:50:06You're not, you're just, you're just an extra.
- 1:50:09And so everyone thought I was an actor and I was like, I'm not an
- 1:50:11actor. But everyone assumed it was
- 1:50:12'cause I was, I was with Walton Goggins.
- 1:50:14And so the scene was I was just walking and go woo with my, with
- 1:50:18my horns on. And so, and he's tripping on ass
- 1:50:20and as he turns my twin brothers in the CGI devil costume where
- 1:50:24he screams at him. So he's in that costume, but
- 1:50:26they kind of like, you know, alter it, post at it.
- 1:50:29And so that scene took 8 hours because just, because it just,
- 1:50:33it just did. And so we probably left at like
- 1:50:347:00 AM. Him and Daniel Bride were like
- 1:50:37drinking. They're kind of getting pissed
- 1:50:38off. It was just taking forever.
- 1:50:40And so then you know, it's supposed to be miked.
- 1:50:42And so they go, dude, all of them.
- 1:50:44And they're like, you're getting $1000 a day.
- 1:50:45I was like, Oh my God, 'cause I had to add a line just going woo
- 1:50:48and but they forgot to mic me and so I went to check out and
- 1:50:52they go, oh, you get 7-5 bucks. I was like, bro, you don't
- 1:50:54understand, I need that money. I'm going to Nashville next
- 1:50:56week. It was crazy, but that was cool.
- 1:50:58No one cared about that show. But then definitely Righteous
- 1:51:01Gemstones and now Walton Goggins being in a What's that show he's
- 1:51:05in now? He was in White Lotus White.
- 1:51:08Lotus says the last one. So that all of a sudden
- 1:51:10everything he did, yeah. And not until that clip.
- 1:51:12Oh, he's so brilliant. I love, I love him.
- 1:51:14And justified you go even back further.
- 1:51:16Yeah, with Timmy. Yeah, yeah, but he's like the
- 1:51:18biggest actor in the world, right?
- 1:51:19Now he's he's just amazing. Just at SNL.
- 1:51:21He's so good. That was cool.
- 1:51:22That was just a random moment. It was really neat.
- 1:51:24That was fun. Then I was just standing for the
- 1:51:25rest of the show. So I, I, I hung around the whole
- 1:51:29time being the stand in the stand is like where they get you
- 1:51:31kind of look like them, I guess. And then you get out of set and
- 1:51:34then because the camera's ready for them.
- 1:51:36And so I got, I got paid quite a bit every day.
- 1:51:38And then so you're eating craft food every day.
- 1:51:40So that was pretty sweet where you're having like literally
- 1:51:43like Creme brulee and like lobster tail and all, and all
- 1:51:46the actions you're having like hot dogs and spaghetti.
- 1:51:48And so then I got fired. And so then I was on set and
- 1:51:52everyone just liked me and my brother and I and all the
- 1:51:54writers like be like you guys coming over here and they took
- 1:51:56a, rented a house. They blacked out all the windows
- 1:51:59because they're getting ready for the lights.
- 1:52:00And so we all like fell asleep because it was just, we were
- 1:52:03there last night till 1:00 AM, we're back at 8.
- 1:52:05And so we all kind of knocked out with the writers.
- 1:52:07They're asleep too. But the head director, who is
- 1:52:10also in Righteous Gemstones, he's a guitar player.
- 1:52:12That's the director. You know what I'm talking about.
- 1:52:13He's got the long hair. Have you seen that show?
- 1:52:15What's? The show Righteous Gemstones.
- 1:52:17Yeah. Oh yeah, I love it.
- 1:52:17So the guy with the long hair, that's like the guitar player.
- 1:52:21So he's the director? He's the director.
- 1:52:22Yeah, so he's the director. So he just pops on the show
- 1:52:24sometimes he he had to go do a movie.
- 1:52:26And so this other director from Italy came in and he I think he
- 1:52:29just made an example of me. I fell asleep.
- 1:52:31He walked in. You're fired, get upset.
- 1:52:33And everyone's really upset. They're like, Oh my God.
- 1:52:35I was like, dude, I'm moving in Asheville.
- 1:52:36I don't give a shit. So.
- 1:52:37But that was a really cool experience.
- 1:52:38My only time with film that was really.
- 1:52:40Fun. It was really cool because I I
- 1:52:41remember that you you run up and you go.
- 1:52:45Yeah, that's awesome. It was pretty.
- 1:52:47Fun. Yeah, I was supposed to be a
- 1:52:49high school kid. Yeah.
- 1:52:50Yeah. Oh, it was great.
- 1:52:51It was great. Yeah, it was fun, man.
- 1:52:52That's cool. You saw that.
- 1:52:53I mean, dude, that that clip is like all over the place.
- 1:52:55People use it on TikTok and shit.
- 1:52:56Yeah. So I think you gotta love it.
- 1:52:57Yeah, I didn't. Again, I didn't know it was you
- 1:52:59until you had posted that and I'd seen the show.
- 1:53:01I I loved the show. And I was like, Oh, well, I
- 1:53:03mean, we wouldn't know that, you know, But the fact you brought
- 1:53:05it up and I was like, oh. Yeah, it was cool shit.
- 1:53:08Yeah, yeah. I'll post it now then, but I was
- 1:53:10in this. I love the song you do when I
- 1:53:16was young. Oh cool.
- 1:53:18And I'm a dope because I think I text you one point like hey man,
- 1:53:20love the new song. You're like, hey, came out in
- 1:53:222016, but that's what you have that literally.
- 1:53:27Be current. I know, I know.
- 1:53:29However. I love it.
- 1:53:31Too. He loves it now.
- 1:53:33Now he loves it. No, I'm talking about him.
- 1:53:35Yeah, I loved it. Like here I.
- 1:53:36Go 10 years ago 9. Years ago, Yeah, 10 years ago.
- 1:53:39But it was a re release. In my defense, there was a re
- 1:53:42release. 1018. Yeah, OK, so sweet damn it.
- 1:53:48I didn't even save myself. But that that re release that I
- 1:53:52had seen and we just talked about it earlier before we came
- 1:53:54on Mike's was when I was younger.
- 1:53:57That was the one I think I came across.
- 1:54:00Yeah, had a heavier riff. So it's two different, it's the
- 1:54:02same song or two different versions.
- 1:54:04It's just slightly different. And the second or the re release
- 1:54:08charted right or something or shut up.
- 1:54:11Yes, Sir. Yeah, it charted.
- 1:54:12Number one like recently. Charted number one on Amazon for
- 1:54:14a day. Yeah, on bestsellers and rock.
- 1:54:16Song that's from 2016. Yeah, so the when I was younger
- 1:54:20was 2018, when I was younger was 2016, but the 2018 version
- 1:54:23charted number one on Amazon. OK, but because the show, it's
- 1:54:25all about the song. The song could be, well, I think
- 1:54:27Blues rock. You can be an old dude.
- 1:54:30Well, there's a great band here. Check him out Piper and the Hard
- 1:54:32Times, older dudes, new band and they are fucking.
- 1:54:36They just won best Blues band international Blues thing in
- 1:54:39Memphis. It's just if the muse is good,
- 1:54:41the muse is good. Yeah, Blues is cool.
- 1:54:43It's it's Bill Burr has a good quote saying if you want bubble
- 1:54:48gum results to your pop * if you be like a rock artist, like
- 1:54:51that's like a long tread with loyal fans, you know, I mean, so
- 1:54:55I think I think you can, you can do anything that's cool if it's
- 1:54:57rock, but it might take a long time for to catch on.
- 1:55:00The vibe of that song is really cool.
- 1:55:01There's a cadence to it, which I think is why I fell in love with
- 1:55:04it, just like And I was. Young It only took a nine years
- 1:55:07to catch up. I never knew.
- 1:55:11But that's just rock music, yeah.
- 1:55:13But once I heard it, I was like, I'm on board, he's on board.
- 1:55:16Well, Creed, they had a resurgence.
- 1:55:18The guy was living in a hotel and then I think when people
- 1:55:20were using his music and TikTok during COVID.
- 1:55:21Yeah. Now Creed is the biggest band in
- 1:55:23the. World right now they are they're
- 1:55:24back touring it and look, Alter Bridge is my favorite brand.
- 1:55:27I love Alter Bridge. Yeah, and they're still, they're
- 1:55:28still, they're still going to be there.
- 1:55:30They're doing this other thing now.
- 1:55:31But the fact that Creed is back too is just even better.
- 1:55:34Yeah, Mark Tremonti, the guitar player.
- 1:55:35Just. Oh dude.
- 1:55:38That's marked from my. Oh my God, dude, so we're
- 1:55:42speaking your language here. Is the camera big enough?
- 1:55:45Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:55:48I left it today. What's that one where there?
- 1:55:50I saw you doing pushups outside before we started, just before
- 1:55:53we started. So yeah, I love that.
- 1:55:56Band I know the first the. First album was so good, so
- 1:56:01good. I used to have that in my my
- 1:56:02little Chevy S10 with the 10 discs.
- 1:56:04CG Yeah. You know what?
- 1:56:06I mean, remember that? Oh, yeah, 10 discs.
- 1:56:07Oh, yeah. We my parents got a Jeep
- 1:56:09Wrangler or no, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and we thought we were
- 1:56:12the richest people in we grew up in town called Goose Creek, but
- 1:56:16it's outside of Charleston. When you get a button and just
- 1:56:18play any song you want or just skip to ACD.
- 1:56:21Like, wow, we're pretty. Big time right here, yeah.
- 1:56:26I just 77 Camaro and I had one mounted in the trunk.
- 1:56:29Yes, we had had the cable. All the way into the front.
- 1:56:31I had a little display on there, right?
- 1:56:33We thought we were the. Trying to be innovative back
- 1:56:36then, yeah. When you go live, when you do a
- 1:56:39live show, do you have any pre show rituals that you like to do
- 1:56:44when you go out there on stage? 100% take a shot of whiskey.
- 1:56:46Yeah, all the time. Just one.
- 1:56:49Does it matter what the whiskey is?
- 1:56:50No. No, no, just whatever is I
- 1:56:51usually bring this with me. But yeah, I think it comes a
- 1:56:53nerves down, OK, you know, But I have gone and stays a little
- 1:56:56tipsy before, I'll put it that way.
- 1:56:58And it's really stupid to do. Yeah.
- 1:57:00'Cause you're like, you're like having fun backstage and you're
- 1:57:02like, oh shit. You know what I mean?
- 1:57:05I still have a job to do still. Yeah, totally.
- 1:57:07Yeah. But always a shot of whiskey.
- 1:57:08OK, you go to the bathroom like 3 times because you don't want
- 1:57:13to have to go pee on stage. You want to time that just
- 1:57:15right, right? Yeah.
- 1:57:16You don't have to go while you're.
- 1:57:17Out there, but I think I was always funny kind of.
- 1:57:18And you get everybody else because like I've seen some
- 1:57:20bands where the lead guys like really like, you know, be ready
- 1:57:23and the bands like, OK, I'm getting paid.
- 1:57:25But like for us, it's like a it's a party, you know what I
- 1:57:27mean? So always like a shot.
- 1:57:29Any idea at this point since you started touring how many tours
- 1:57:34you've done? Tour tours, not a ton where it's
- 1:57:38like a tour tour, but you can call me like a weekend warrior
- 1:57:42and I'm like, hey, we're going to do this run.
- 1:57:44I mean, but shows, man, I don't know.
- 1:57:45When I was doing when I was doing full time music, I was
- 1:57:48doing like 3-4 nights a week. Nice.
- 1:57:51And so BMI live is a thing where you get paid now when you play
- 1:57:56shows. Man, I thought I was the richest
- 1:57:58guy in the world. I was getting like couple grand
- 1:57:59every BMI check and living in Charleston, my rent was $400.
- 1:58:04And so I was like, oh, this is it.
- 1:58:06But then I saw guys that were older that were in Charleston,
- 1:58:09like trying to make it and like, they don't look too healthy
- 1:58:12because they're drinking all the time.
- 1:58:13And I was like, man, I can't, I need to do something else to
- 1:58:16like where I don't have to always be playing because
- 1:58:19there's always a bar tab or something.
- 1:58:20You're like, oh, fuck it. I have a drink.
- 1:58:21And then like, it's a, it's a cycle and you're not, you're not
- 1:58:24eating really good food. You're eating like chicken
- 1:58:26tenders. And so eventually I was like,
- 1:58:28OK, I can't do this all the time, but I definitely played a
- 1:58:31lot of shows. But it got my got my playing up
- 1:58:33for sure where I can like I can play for hours.
- 1:58:35And there's only so many artists out there that have, you know,
- 1:58:37like the big time tour buses. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:58:40The good food. Yeah, the good food.
- 1:58:43Yeah. It's it's tough.
- 1:58:45We tour, you always try to find good food.
- 1:58:47If I see a Panera Bread, I'm like, guys, we got to stop.
- 1:58:49And yeah, it's slightly better actually.
- 1:58:51I love Panera Bread. I do.
- 1:58:53Like. Panera, they have good choices.
- 1:58:54In there you can make good choices.
- 1:58:55When I'm doing when I do tours with this tours where I'm like
- 1:58:58driving all week, meeting other accounts, Panera Bread all day
- 1:59:01and then I'll keep the cup in the car so I don't pay for
- 1:59:03another soda, you know what I mean?
- 1:59:05So. Scott Scott Actually, Scott and
- 1:59:07I were on baseball. I.
- 1:59:08Do this shit all the time. Scott and I were on our baseball
- 1:59:10brewery tour recently and we were, I think we were leaving
- 1:59:14like Cleveland or something. And we're trying to figure out
- 1:59:16like where we go for breakfast and, and we were laughing.
- 1:59:18I'm like, there's a, there's like a Perkins or an IHOP, but
- 1:59:22wait, there's Panera. Panera.
- 1:59:25So yeah, we we Panera. There were three or four things
- 1:59:27and we were like Panera. Panera always together.
- 1:59:30I think you're a psycho if you if you eat Taco Bell during the
- 1:59:34day. It's a late.
- 1:59:37Night. It's a late night thing.
- 1:59:39Ask him what I think of Taco Bell.
- 1:59:40But you know what? Do you think of Taco Bell?
- 1:59:41But he he doesn't. He's not a big fan of the Taco
- 1:59:44Bell. I love Taco Bell at night.
- 1:59:46At night, at night, maybe at night.
- 1:59:48No I think it's the shit dude. Like you get a whole bunch of
- 1:59:50random different things for like 10 bucks.
- 1:59:52Well, now. And they drink some whiskey and
- 1:59:53have some Taco Bell. Yeah, My, my, my girlfriend, my
- 1:59:56girlfriend's Latina. She's Mexican, all right.
- 1:59:58She hates Taco Bell. She's like, this is not.
- 2:00:02I'm like, no, this is good shit. You're back and hit it at 1:00
- 2:00:04AM if I want. Yeah, I'm like, come on man,
- 2:00:05it's good shit. But living in LA, oh man, the
- 2:00:08Mexican food there was so. Good, there's no Waffle House on
- 2:00:10the road. Well, in the Southeast, hell
- 2:00:12yeah. Yeah.
- 2:00:13Yeah, yeah. But out there, it was Denny's.
- 2:00:16We we actually were talking about that when we were we were
- 2:00:19traveling through Ohio. Or or IHOP.
- 2:00:21Somehow, yeah, IHOP and Denny's came up and we both got them.
- 2:00:25Like I think the last time I went to a Denny's, it was many,
- 2:00:28many years ago and I was with a buddy of mine and like the
- 2:00:30waitress sneezed on our food and I never went back, I said.
- 2:00:33I don't want mayonnaise. Takes your sandwiches, whips
- 2:00:35off. There you go.
- 2:00:36Fuck, you know what I mean? Yeah, Denny's is gross.
- 2:00:39IHOP would be tolerable. IHOP is cool.
- 2:00:41I live in front of IHOP in LA on Wilshire was like the longest
- 2:00:44road goes from Santa Monica downtown.
- 2:00:46Yeah, and there's IHOP in front of us and it was like it was
- 2:00:48decent. You know what I mean?
- 2:00:49You know what I mean? But but I love Taco Bell.
- 2:00:52I love Taco Bell all. Right.
- 2:00:53Completely unrelated, but In-n-out Burger is coming here.
- 2:00:57How do you feel about that being Yeah and then being have living
- 2:00:59in? N Out Burger.
- 2:01:00Oh my God, I can't wait. Headquarters are moving here.
- 2:01:03Really. Yes, since.
- 2:01:04They're all leaving California dude.
- 2:01:06RDC. Like I mentioned earlier, major
- 2:01:08corporations live in California. They're all even.
- 2:01:10I love California though. I want to move back one day so
- 2:01:14but In-n-out can't wait. Man is it will live up to the
- 2:01:16hype because I've never had an N Out burger and they will be
- 2:01:18here. You ever had?
- 2:01:19Never had either. You've had Jack Browns.
- 2:01:22Oh yeah. Yeah, it's very so OK where it's
- 2:01:25a guy like fantastic that like kind of like 1000 Island sauce
- 2:01:27on it. Yeah, it's like that, but in and
- 2:01:29out. Dude is so good.
- 2:01:30You know how much a manager makes in California, like 120
- 2:01:32grand a year? What?
- 2:01:33Yeah, because they're just print money.
- 2:01:34It's like Chick-fil-A. It's like.
- 2:01:36I I realize I'm going to get laughed at here and the only
- 2:01:38reason I know this is because I've been told this by other
- 2:01:41people since Bucky's is such a big phenomenon on buggies is
- 2:01:46cool and you can go to Bucky's and apparently be like a big
- 2:01:49general manager of a Bucky's and make like 130.
- 2:01:51Grand dude, something is up to quarter million the.
- 2:01:54Quarter million I was. One the middle of nowhere car
- 2:01:56wash and I had out there and said, here's the here's the the
- 2:01:59salary for all the positions and the GM was like, but I'm sure
- 2:02:02you had I'm sure you live there. No, that's the thing, yeah.
- 2:02:05So if you're like, dude, I'm in some gambling debt I gotta I
- 2:02:07gotta stop at. Bucky's Oh, you know.
- 2:02:09You, I have an ex-wife. I'll just live with the Bucky's
- 2:02:11now. I went, I went to Bucky's for
- 2:02:13the. I had.
- 2:02:14I went, I had Bucky's for the first time in the past year.
- 2:02:18Yeah. First time ever in the.
- 2:02:19Past I'm ever here on this. You went in there?
- 2:02:21Yeah, yeah. It's wild.
- 2:02:22You walk in there, it's a lot of mouth breathers.
- 2:02:24They're all just kind of like, like, dude, get the fuck out of
- 2:02:28way. I'm trying, I'm trying to get a
- 2:02:28Gatorade, you know, I mean, but it's just like it is every time
- 2:02:34I go there, I'm like, dude, geez, it's it's so wild.
- 2:02:36But Bucky's? Bet a total 20 minutes and
- 2:02:40Bucky's and you know what? You know what, I purchased there
- 2:02:43only for myself. So I I had some family that love
- 2:02:46Bucky's and I got them a gift card or whatever.
- 2:02:47Beaver Nuggets. Yeah, I bought, bought my
- 2:02:49girlfriend little like the little squirrel or whatever it
- 2:02:52is. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:02:52But you know, you know what I got?
- 2:02:53I collect shot glasses. Oh, cool.
- 2:02:55And I went in there and I'm like, maybe Bucky's has shot
- 2:02:58glasses. They totally do.
- 2:02:59I have a Bucky shot glass. Nice cool they got like the the
- 2:03:03pulled pork and the the print. That I had to.
- 2:03:06I had the pulled pork sandwich. They got one up north of Bowling
- 2:03:09Green, KY. Yeah, they do.
- 2:03:10They have to stop in there. It's just funny, though.
- 2:03:12But you go in there, the the gas is cheap.
- 2:03:13Every time I see a bucket, they just just go in.
- 2:03:15Yeah, it's kind of fun. Yeah.
- 2:03:17You know, but yeah, but the general manager makes like a
- 2:03:19quarter million bucks. Yeah, that'd probably say the
- 2:03:21highest they make, but. It's not wild.
- 2:03:23It is wild. It is wild.
- 2:03:24I think the car wash manager makes that shit ton too, Yeah.
- 2:03:27You know, but would you want to work there?
- 2:03:29No. I don't know.
- 2:03:32Of the brisket sandwiches free. Yeah, it's crazy.
- 2:03:35They got great bathrooms. I think the one cool thing to
- 2:03:37make, I mean, like Taylor's doing it like with content,
- 2:03:39Content's cool if you can keep doing it.
- 2:03:41I mean maybe hopefully one day you guys start making some.
- 2:03:42Cash, yeah, hopefully. You know what I mean?
- 2:03:44It's just, but it's all about video.
- 2:03:46You gotta get the clips. Yep.
- 2:03:47It's like you see comedians like no one watches the full set.
- 2:03:50You just they just watch the clips.
- 2:03:52People talk about how they selling out arenas.
- 2:03:54It's not from the clips, it's the.
- 2:03:55Clips yeah, Jeff Dye love that guy.
- 2:03:57He just said zanies recently and I was like, Oh my God, it's him.
- 2:03:59But I see him all the time on Instagram Zanies and saw that,
- 2:04:01yeah, Tyler Butler Fisher. He was another guy that blew up
- 2:04:05through like TikTok just doing stupid shit.
- 2:04:07And then now the guy's like he has, I've seen his stuff on
- 2:04:10Instagram. He's like he lives like in
- 2:04:11$1,000,000 house in Austin, you know what I mean?
- 2:04:13So it's kind of Wildman. It's we live in a crazy world
- 2:04:16coming up. I was like, dude, like, you
- 2:04:17know, Internet, whatever. Now it's like everyone's gunning
- 2:04:20for it. Yeah, even our dumb shit that we
- 2:04:22do is like, I'm not doing social media.
- 2:04:24What do we do? We're not doing social media.
- 2:04:26And then and then you have to, then you do it.
- 2:04:28You have to. I was never a TikTok guy.
- 2:04:31I just started. I started really getting tech
- 2:04:32talk about two months ago and now it's starting to pop off.
- 2:04:35I'm like fuck I guess. I got to keep this thing up.
- 2:04:37Yeah, but you know what, man, it does turn into things.
- 2:04:40I mean, we met, you know what I mean?
- 2:04:41Yes, absolutely. You start.
- 2:04:42OK, let's give a shout to everybody.
- 2:04:44Armando, right. Our boy Mondo and I was going to
- 2:04:46bring it. Yes, Armando takes fantastic
- 2:04:48pictures by the way. We both know him.
- 2:04:50A picture of that. Cheers to Armando.
- 2:04:53Cheers to you guys. He's a big cheers to you.
- 2:04:55Cheers, Sir. Tyler Taylor back there.
- 2:04:58Thank you so much. He's in overtime.
- 2:05:01I think, I think, I think, I think every time I come here.
- 2:05:05The only reason you drink while doing.
- 2:05:08This. Yeah.
- 2:05:11Can I also say usually I'm the one that's kind of like
- 2:05:14engineering our podcast. So this has been the first
- 2:05:17podcast we've ever done where I'm not stressing anything.
- 2:05:19Sure. I'm not just sitting around
- 2:05:20going, huh? I hope the audio is OK.
- 2:05:23You guys should come back and you should just like once a
- 2:05:25month. Or so we will.
- 2:05:26We will because it's been a great we're at Garden Groove yes
- 2:05:29Studios right in East Nashville, TN on him out knock on the front
- 2:05:34door. Taylor will answer if you just
- 2:05:37need if you just need like an impromptu I.
- 2:05:38Love it man, I try to come here. This is this is awesome.
- 2:05:41It's nice and and and quaint and and just awesome and, and we
- 2:05:46just it's I don't know, it's really cool.
- 2:05:48It's great. A little spot right here.
- 2:05:49I can't wait man. I I've been looking forward to
- 2:05:52this one too because you know, I'm not the one interviewing so
- 2:05:54it's fun. So appreciate it.
- 2:05:56One last thing and get back to your serious mode real quick.
- 2:06:00You're serious, you are creative, you're driven, you're
- 2:06:04independent. What is that common thread that
- 2:06:06ties all your things together? I think it's easy just being
- 2:06:10consistent. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:06:12You're just always doing it. You got to take it as a job
- 2:06:15because sometimes you can go like, well, I made a lot of
- 2:06:16money today and like, I guess I can take a week off.
- 2:06:19No, you never should. You know, just got to just keep
- 2:06:21doing stuff because social media people don't think boons, both
- 2:06:26boons aren't doing shit unless I'm posting.
- 2:06:29It's so stupid. We can be killing it.
- 2:06:31But if I post awesome dude, you know, so just being consistent
- 2:06:34and social media is a huge part of it.
- 2:06:36I try to a buddy Lewis rebel Tucker, I mentioned earlier, we
- 2:06:39talked about once. It's like I literally roll over
- 2:06:41in bed and get my phone and I start posting immediately and
- 2:06:43then I get it done with. I try to in the morning, you
- 2:06:45know what I mean? And then and then all of a
- 2:06:47sudden you start seeing results from it like some other bar
- 2:06:51picked up Boone's everyday because I followed them and I
- 2:06:53posted some of those. Hey, we just picked it up, you
- 2:06:55know, so just being consistent. Well, let it be known that Tyler
- 2:06:57Boone is actually doing his own social media.
- 2:07:00Yeah, Yeah. And I know this because the
- 2:07:02reason I met you is I was, I think I had a text that DM the
- 2:07:06Instagram account originally. And it was you that responded.
- 2:07:09Yeah, yeah, yeah. And here we are today.
- 2:07:10I had a guy on LinkedIn yesterday hit me up, we
- 2:07:13connected and he goes, this is the actual Tyler.
- 2:07:15Yeah, Yeah, dude, like what? He was all coolest talk.
- 2:07:19You know, I think people think there's like bots responding and
- 2:07:21yeah, you know what I mean? So especially we're a bigger
- 2:07:23artist. I'm not a big artist.
- 2:07:24So yeah, you have to do it all, man, you know what I mean?
- 2:07:27What the other guy has to do in Weldon, there's like a million
- 2:07:30followers all across platforms because I do it all by myself,
- 2:07:32you know what I mean? Also too you don't want to be
- 2:07:34given you don't want to hire someone 1000 bucks a month to do
- 2:07:37it for. You.
- 2:07:38You don't. It's.
- 2:07:38A waste of money. We're not.
- 2:07:40We're nowhere near, but we got to harm a little thing.
- 2:07:42But we do every single thing ourselves.
- 2:07:44Anything you see, good or bad, is US.
- 2:07:46Yeah, yeah. There's nobody else involved.
- 2:07:48Well, I'd just say if you'd be consistent in a year from you
- 2:07:50guys will you know, you know what I mean.
- 2:07:52I'll give message for you bouncing.
- 2:07:53What's your goal with your pod, you know?
- 2:07:54We would honestly, it would like you said, we would like to have
- 2:07:57some revenue. Yeah, sure.
- 2:07:59Some, some, it doesn't have to be big, just some form of stream
- 2:08:01of revenue, whether it be a sponsorship.
- 2:08:03We've done a few things where we've asked some people we got
- 2:08:06to build on that. But some, some sponsorship
- 2:08:09maybe, maybe sponsor a trip like a Cincinnati trip, Maybe sponsor
- 2:08:13that trip. And I think the thing that you
- 2:08:16something like that and not to interrupt, I think the thing
- 2:08:18that you had also said was consistency.
- 2:08:21I mean, we put out, you know, usually a podcast a week.
- 2:08:24We try to be consistent. We try to have good content.
- 2:08:27And I think the thing that we've tried to be consistent about is
- 2:08:31we try to be a champion for what we do, representing the craft
- 2:08:35beer community. Sure, you know, and we don't, we
- 2:08:39don't crap on breweries. We don't crap on beer.
- 2:08:42I mean, we might say, you know, we drank that beer, not our
- 2:08:45thing. But, you know, it's subjective,
- 2:08:46right? And so we just try to be out
- 2:08:49there championing everybody. I think maybe what you could
- 2:08:52maybe do is like what you guys get your platform bigger and get
- 2:08:55some more subscribers. You can leverage it and go, hey,
- 2:08:58you got this big thing on Saturday, like a, you know, have
- 2:09:00that shit on Saturday, like live music and all this fun stuff.
- 2:09:03Go, we'll come out and do it live.
- 2:09:04PS-150 You know, I mean, just something simple.
- 2:09:07Just screw it. We got a podcast out there and
- 2:09:10that's one of my buddy Box, who was a DJ guy back in the day.
- 2:09:13That's what he did. He used to call it boxing
- 2:09:16something, I can't remember the name of it, but he would go with
- 2:09:18his podcast live, like a radio thing.
- 2:09:20We have like a table and the tent.
- 2:09:22Yeah. And he would go live and he
- 2:09:23would get paid like 200 bucks just be at a brewery.
- 2:09:25That's cool. Yeah, that's cool.
- 2:09:26Yeah. We haven't got paid for it, but
- 2:09:28we've gotten we've gotten invitations and we got more
- 2:09:30coming to come out and do it and we'll give you tickets for the
- 2:09:33thing for free, sure. And come out.
- 2:09:34So that's kind of a step in that directions.
- 2:09:36Well, let's keep collabing, man. If you.
- 2:09:38If you. We all, yeah, I mean, we're fans
- 2:09:40of yours, obviously. And thanks for thanks for doing
- 2:09:43this in our stupid little podcast that you have.
- 2:09:46But no, this was great. Thanks for this for, you know,
- 2:09:50introducing us to Taylor Taylor having us here.
- 2:09:53Taylor, thanks for having us and staying late and.
- 2:09:57I got the second hour, you got the.
- 2:09:59Second, cheers anyway. Cheers.
- 2:10:01Guys, thank you. Tyler Boone.
