Transcript
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the table at a dance competition?
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Exactly what are the judges looking for anyway?
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: This is Making the Impact, a dance competition podcast.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Each week we'll cover a different topic related to the world of competitive dance from the perspective of the judges behind the table.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Hey listeners, it's Courtney Ortiz, and welcome to our wrap-up episode of season five.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Like always, I'm here with my co-host Leslie Mueller.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Courtney, we are here, and we're just gonna give y'all a little rundown of how this season went for us.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: We had such a great season five.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I I really cannot believe we've been doing this for five seasons.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Like, wow.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: 190 episodes we have tackled through all of our years doing Making an Impact.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Three, four years?
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Four years.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: It's right, it's it's wild.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: And you know, we do take our summer break, which we are excited about and ready for, and it's super necessary.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I think for for our podcast, we scheduled it that way, not only to coincide with just the dance season generally.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's why we did it the way we did it, but also to just give us that break time to brainstorm, to plan, to bring you the best episodes, to bring you the best guests.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: You know, it's I think it's really hard to just go, go, go, go, go with no stopping.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: And so I think the way we've scheduled our seasons allows us to have that downtime that we both need to kind of refresh and re-engage and and come back, you know, really strong in in September.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So I can't wait, but I also am excited for summer.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: I'm excited for summer too.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: And uh I agree.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: I think that it's definitely needed for us to take our little hiatus.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: And I'm sure all of the listeners out there are gonna miss us so much and hearing us each and every week, uh, whether you listen with your AirPods on, on your commute, whether you pop our voices on in the podcast world while you're cleaning your house, or maybe while you're heading to the dance studio every Thursday or Friday or on your way to competition, I'm sure you're gonna miss our lovely voices out there.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: However, there are, like I said, 190 episodes.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: So I I know for a fact there are tons of new listeners who have recently discovered our podcast this season.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: Y'all have a lot of catching up to do, and you can make that happen over the summer hiatus that's starting right now.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And what I'm it's kind of fun when we uh, you know, when I'm on our Facebook group and just sort of perusing all the people that are chatting.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: And there's so there's often recently actually been people saying, Is there an episode on this?
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Is there an episode on that?
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: And usually there already is, which are again just shows that like there are some new listeners who maybe haven't been with us since season one and you know can always go back and find new information or, you know, things that they just didn't know existed.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, and sometimes there is the the the one that says, Well, is there an episode on this?
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And there's actually not.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So that's also helpful for us to to get some new ideas for next season and the seasons as we keep, I think we have like three or four seasons worth of ideas total in our brainstorming, you know, little document.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: So And every time people recommend an episode topic, we put that in our brainstorming list.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: So if you are in our Making the Impact group, which fun fact has over 3,500 members in that group now, making the impact, the dance competition podcast community.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Please go join if you're not a part of it.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: We'd love to see you there.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: We always share which events you're attending throughout the season and uh different people can reconnect with each other and say, oh, I'm going to that event as well.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: We also allow everyone to share their accomplishments and photos throughout the competition season and recital season.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: So uh, and there's a lot of great conversations happening in our group, which uh I think is really great and also helpful for us to know what topics we need to tackle on future seasons.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: So if there is a topic you want to hear on making the impact during our off season, shoot it our way.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: And you might hear that episode in season six or beyond.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Um, because both we're gonna have a lot of prepping and planning to do during the summer to prepare our season schedule for season six.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, because that summer just like it's over before you even think about it.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So uh we got a lot on our plate.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: But before we start talking about summer, do you want to talk about the most recent Making the Impact winners and get those out there in the world before we keep on going with our episode?
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Yes, we have a few final Making the Impact Award winners to announce on our episode.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: These are from some of our later regional events in the season.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: And fun fact, for all of our Making the Impact winners out there, we will be running a fan favorite contest that is happening in June, and I'll tell you a little bit more about that shortly.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: But let's hear our very first Making the Impact Award winner.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: From World Class Talent Experiences event in Columbus, Ohio, congrats to Studio C School of Dance from Canal Winchester, Ohio for their large group.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: From Diva Dance Competitions event in Providence, Rhode Island, congrats to Spotlight Dance Studio from Taunton, Massachusetts, and dancer Jaden B for their solo Voice Down.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: From Gems Dance Competitions Event in Minneapolis, Minnesota, congrats to First City Dance Studio from Amiji, Minnesota for their small group, Joelen.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: And from DECA Dance Competitions event in Atlantic City, New Jersey, congrats to Casey's Dance Studio from Brigantine, New Jersey, and dancer Gianna G for their solo Hit Me With Your Best Shot.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Very cool.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Well, congrats to all of the Making the Impact winners out there this season.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: And we hope to keep Making the Impact in future uh events.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: All right, so season five, let's talk about it.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Let's hear a little bit more about some of the stats.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: I can't wait to hear some of your favorite episodes.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: And something that I want to just briefly mention about season five is that we have continued on with our platinum premium subscription.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: So that was new for us last year in season four.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: We have continued on with that.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: We have over 75 subscribers and more to come, I'm sure.

- 7:15SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Die Hard.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: That's really great.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And I know they show up.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Uh they show up for making the impact, which is very cool.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: But speaking of showing up, we had a lot of people show up to our live podcast event at Capizio back in March.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Man, that was such a fun time.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: We had a sold-out event at the flagship store in Times Square.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Courtney taught a sold-out jazz class.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: We had dancers all the way from about age eight all the way up to, you know, teenagers.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Lots of parents had the chance to sit in and observe.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Um, we had some great footage that we got, which you may see sometime in the future of all the dancers.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: We were able to have a lunch at the Capizio flagship store.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Shout out to Capizio for hosting that event, sponsoring this event.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Wow, we had 80 people show up.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: It's crazy.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, we actually had to cap it.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: We had a waiting list.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: We had a waiting list, which we did honor.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: We had a few people who were able to uh come to class and attend the event, but uh we had to cap it at 80 because of capacity restrictions at Capizio.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: That's all that they could accommodate.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: And we we sold that thing out very early on, um, which I was so shocked.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: And to be honest, I think we just picked a really great weekend in the middle of competition season.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: We did over like Easter weekend at the end of March, where no one had comp and everyone could come.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: And we actually even had people from out of town.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Like that was what blew my mind is we had listeners from Canada and Wisconsin who were just happened to be on spring break visiting family and were able to make this event a part of their trip, which I think was just that was more than I could have ever expected.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: So that was really cool.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: We had sponsors through Capezio.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Poppy and Suja had some wonderful beverages with our lunch.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: The staff at Capizio was wonderful.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Sierra, who is the retail director of the entire retail division, was super helpful in making this happen.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Our boyfriends, Jake and Matt, they were helping doing everything.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Uh Brittany Pace was our wonderful videographer.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: We had such a great time, and I think everybody else did too.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: So we are hopeful to be able to do more of those events in the future and include more people.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: So stay tuned for even more live events.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm I'm maybe thinking something might be coming for our 200th episode, which is coming in season six.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: I'm just putting it out there.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: No spoilers yet.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: But you know, I'm just gonna put that out into the universe that maybe we need some type of event again to celebrate 200 episodes coming soon.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: And that would honestly be happening in the fall because we're gonna be at 190.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's that'll happen in what, like October or November?
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: So we'll see.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Stay tuned, everyone.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: But yes, that was definitely like a highlight for this season five for me was making that podcast event happen in New York City.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: It it just felt like a dream come true.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Walking into the Capizio flagship store, a store that I've been into so many times.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: I remember going to as a kid to go buy shoes and go buy dancewear.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: And now we're hosting a podcast at that, at that location.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: It was just, and in New York City, like literally overlooking Times Square.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, it doesn't get better than that.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: So thank you so much, Capizio.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Leslie, for helping make that connection possible.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: And to everyone who was a part of it and who participated and joined us, even so many, I feel like so many dancers discovered our podcast because of their parents bringing them along.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: And the parents are fans and they say, Well, you should come take this jazz class and you should come learn from these people.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Let's, you know, and the kids were asking questions in in our QA, getting up on the mic.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: It was mostly kids, which just that is kind of what blew my mind too.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: And they were great questions.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: So if you want to hear that episode, subscribe to Platinum Premium because that is where it exists.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: It's over there on Platinum Premium, y'all.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: And it was a great hour and a half chat.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: So lots of great discussions happening over there.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: And give a listen on Platinum Premium.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Well, let's talk about some stats.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: We talk about this every year.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And you know, listen, I don't know.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: Do the listeners care?
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: I care a lot.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: So that's why we talk about it.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: It's because we care.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: You care a lot.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Leslie is stalking those stats all the time.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: All the reviews.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: I'm always looking at the review and I'm like, well, somebody gave us a one-star review, but they didn't leave their name.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: So listen, if you want to leave us a one-star review, that's fine, but you should at least leave your name.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: All the stats.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, in season five alone, we had over 125,000 listens worldwide.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, we are reaching the masses here.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: And I truly believe that we are one of the top dance podcasts in the industry.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: And I really think it comes down to not only the topics and our fantastic guests, but our consistency, Leslie.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Like I think we are just so consistent with our podcast.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: And I'm I'm so proud of that because it is really hard to make work possible every single week.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: You know, we have to figure out coordinating all of our schedules to align with four different people's schedules to sit down and record an episode for an hour's time.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: People are donating their time to be on our podcast and and we all have very busy lives.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm grateful for the consistency that we've continued to produce out there into the dance world for five seasons worth.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: And I think it really shows in our stats.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Because, you know, not and I'm an avid podcast listener, mostly true crime.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: But what bothers me the most is if I'm listening to a podcast and I don't have my next week's episode.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: If for some reason they didn't release it or it's, you know, there's something happened and you don't get it, I'm really annoyed.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: And so nobody has, you know, nobody's annoyed with us because we're like clockwork, 7 a.m.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: every Thursday.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: It's there, it's ready for you, it is ready to go.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: And, you know, it really does.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: There are some bloopers that happen that, you know, sometimes you click the wrong button, or at one point, uh Courtney and I recorded about 15 minutes of an episode, but it wasn't actually recording.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: We were just talking.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: So that was fun.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot that goes into it to make it all happen.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: But I agree.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: I think the consistency is key.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I I'm I love that people sort of, you know, it's like a marker in their week, Thursday.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Making the impact comes out.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: I listen to it, and we hear this all the time as you know, it comes out and I listen to it that day, or I listen to it on the way to competition.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: And, you know, that's kind of a benchmark of their week, which I think is really cool that we can be a part of people's lives, you know, from wherever we are.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Yes, totally.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: And with that being said, we have officially hit over 500,000 downloads since our launch.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Wow, it is amazing.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: We've been like waiting for 500,000 for a very long time.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: And last year we got so close.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: I think we ended at a little bit over 350,000 listens since the start of our launch back in 2019.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: And now we finally reached 500,000.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: So thank you to everyone who is continuing to share with your dance friends and dance lovers around the world.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Thank you to all of the IDA affiliated competitions who are advertising our podcast out to the masses.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: You may have seen our retractable banners out at all IDA affiliated competition events this season advertising the pod.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: We also have program ads and a lot of the programs from our affiliates and even little flyers on the merch tables or in your teacher bag.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: So we are getting the word out there for sure, and more people are discovering.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: But wow, I can't believe we finally hit 500.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, I remember when we were like looking forward to 100,000.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: You remember?
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: Like that was, you know, that was such a big milestone.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: And I mean, everything's a milestone, but like 500,000 is pretty big deal because to me, that's a hundred thousand per year or per season, where the end of season five that means a hundred thousand downloads per year, which that's pretty cool.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of reach, you know, for something we literally do in our pajamas with no makeup on, you know, like we're just we love to do it and we're just talking dance.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: So I think it's definitely something to be proud of.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: We have had 42 episodes in season five, 10 platinum premium episodes, and we have 40 more coming your way in season six.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Yes, we do.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: And our 200th episode is right around the corner.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: So can't wait to brainstorm what is coming your way in season six.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: But let's share with everybody what our most listened to episode of season five was.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Of season five.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Well, you know what?
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: I think it's no surprise, Courtney, what our most listened to episode of season five was.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: Do you want to tell us everybody what it was?
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Yes, our most listened to episode was season five, episode 151, Lyrical versus Contemporary 2.0.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: We had to tackle this topic again.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: It was a fan favorite from all the way back in season one.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: And we were like, you know what?
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: People still don't know what the difference is.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: So let's talk about it again.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, we just gotta keep talking about it.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I love I mean, I'm not surprised in the slightest that that is the most popular of season one or season five.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: A little throwback to season one because that was that was an important episode uh that we really came out with a bang, I think, in season one.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: So it's still important.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: And it was great to hear new, new perspectives on that with different guests this time around.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: So if you haven't given a listen to our most listened to episode of season five, give a listen to 2.0 and 1.0 Lyrical versus contemporary, because there's a lot of great information there all the way back from season one.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: But we also have some runner-ups for season five, and that is in second place most listened to episode is High Gold.
- 16:44unknown: High Gold.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: High Gold is episode 156.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: The ingredients to a winning routine at competition.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: Third place overall.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: What do they get?
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, just the gold.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: Honorable mention.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to take it back.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: The gold goes to.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Episode 175, Perfecting the Pirouette Tips from the Pros, which was such a great one.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: I loved that episode.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Yes, so excellent.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: And I think did we stand up again?
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: Did all of us stand up and try to do a pirouette with the back foot down?
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: I don't know if we stood up in this one, but we definitely talked about how that heel better be up in a jazz pirouette.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Oh, good times, good times.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: So yeah, those were some great episodes of season five.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: But now we have to get into the nitty-gritty of the top three most listened to, listened to episodes of all time.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Because we have a change in that ranking.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, I really can't believe it.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: The time has finally come.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: I I never thought the day would come.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: I never thought Lyrical versus contemporary would not be in the number one spot.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Because it has been in the number one spot of all time.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: The season one, episode four, lyrical versus contemporary, separating the styles, has been in first place for the entire duration of our podcast.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: It has never been bumped.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: And we it gets close here and every every year.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: It gets a little close, somebody gets a little close, and it then it doesn't happen, but this year it has happened.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: So let's hear our third place.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: Season three, episode 100, the top 10 studio habits judges see at competition rolls in at third place.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: And I'm sure you've already figured out who's in second place.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: Season one, episode four, Lyrical versus Contemporary, separating the styles, our very first lyrical versus contemporary.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: And that's been out now for four years of listening.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of crazy that something has surpassed it.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: And I think it's interesting that that one always shows up, you know, at the top because I think people, I think somebody at one point must have shared it like on its own to a bunch of people.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: And I think there was like a big push because it's clearly there are clearly more people downloading that one than anything else, which means it's getting out there on its own as opposed to like, well, let me just download all these episodes.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: You know, I think it's living on its own for but what has surpassed lyrical versus contemporary in first place for the most listened to episode of all time of Making the Impact is season four, episode 127, Competition Trends: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: Ooh, I think it's because of that very, very hot title that we have.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: We love, we, we confession, Courtney and I struggle with creating good titles because they need to be short and to the point.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: They need to tell you exactly what the episode's gonna be about, but they also need to, let's be real, be clickable.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: You need to want to click on that.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: You know, nobody wants to be like, learn how to do a plie.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Well, that's boring.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Like, how how can we make that exciting?
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: So this was one that we came up with that I thought, you know, really showcased exactly what we were gonna talk about.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: And we didn't sugarcoat anything in that episode.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: The good, the bad, and the ugly, because there's some ugly out there.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Let's be real.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: And it also is this is helpful because I feel like that a lot of people love those episodes where we have judges chiming in with audio clips and sharing different perspectives instead of our sit-down round table style chats, which we do primarily all the time.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: That's our main the bulk of our episodes.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: But in first and third place are two episodes where we had judges chiming in and us discussing.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: So also with that, we just released an episode very similar with our 2024 takeaways for our final episode of season five.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: If you are listening in reverse order and you haven't had a chance to listen to that yet, go give that a listen because that's our last episode.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: And that's another, I guess, popular style episode with the judges.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: So it's good to know that people are enjoying those, and we'll definitely we usually do around two to three of those per season.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: So stay tuned for more to come in season six.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: Well, Court, let's talk about our favorite episodes because you know, sometimes those are different for different reasons.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: And I like all of them really, but it's hard to pick a favorite.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: We've had some really great guests this season, so shout out to all of them.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: I think that we curated a fantastic season in season five.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: We really covered all of the bases from studio training to performance habits to nutrition to dance mom episodes, um, studio jealousy episodes.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, we've we really tried to make sure that we were catering to all of the listeners out there, whether you're a dancer, a professional, a judge, a teacher, a studio owner, a dance mom.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: There's so many people that are part of this dance world, and we want to make sure that you are all being recognized in different discussions and topics.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: So I'd have to say my some of my favorites of season five.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: I really loved episode 158, all about across the floor and progressions.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: We had two amazing jazz dance educators, Terrell Mitchell and Kelsey Nelson, on the pod, back again.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: And uh I think it's it was a really important discussion to hear why across the floor and doing progressions in class is so necessary, but oftentimes forgotten about or not done as frequently as we all believe it should be happening in studio training.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: So um we put that towards the beginning of the season in hopes that uh people would listen and be inspired to maybe start implementing that into the training.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: And uh we got some really great feedback on that episode.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: People were raving about it and learned so much from that discussion.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: So it was one of my favorites.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and like Courtney said, we we are very strategic about where we place certain episodes because we're it is our hope that, you know, yes, Courtney and I don't teach in a classroom regularly.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: Um Courtney goes out and teaches on the weekends and does summer stuff and, you know, teaches at BDC and steps and everything.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Um, I am no longer really in the teaching game, but I still think we have so much value to bring in advice and and strategies and things like that.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: So the reason we are so strategic is because we hope that here's another little tool in your tool belt that like we can give you that, hey, we put this in September or October because maybe you'll listen and then maybe you'll implement some of these things and you'll have time during the school year to maybe make a change that's for the better.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: So I think that placement was really great.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: And I too really loved that episode.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Um, I love those guests.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: I think they were wonderful.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: What was one of your faves?
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: I really enjoyed actually the episode strangely that came right after that episode.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, 159 Swings and Understudies, the unsung heroes of the dance world.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: Not only because I really loved the guests, but because I really believe it.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: I think swings and understudies are the backbone of any professional production.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: And I think it's really important for student dancers to understand what those roles entail, because those are some of the most important jobs that you can get as a professional.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: And the kids that, you know, sort of understand what that means are going to go on to get those jobs or train are going to be trained well enough to hop into a production that they haven't seen the choreography in a month, but they know it because they're the understudy.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: And they can get, you know, and I think that was, you know, hopefully a an interesting episode for teachers to consider, you know, putting understudies in their routines, especially once you get to an older, older age, a higher level of dancer, because then they can handle it.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: You know, I don't think a seven-year-old needs to be an understudy in in a, you know, intermediate level dance.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: That's, I think we're gonna push it there.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: But, you know, once you're a little bit older and can handle things, I think it's really important to start teaching that because if you don't teach it, nobody's gonna learn it.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh truly.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think back on that episode, I'm so glad we did it.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: I wish there was a resource like that when I was breaking into the industry because there were many times where I would go into auditions to be the swing or the understudy for something.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: And I was terrified.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: And I still to this very day, I mean, I like I mentioned on the episode, I swung last summer at the Muni.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: And I was terrified the whole time.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna lie.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: I was I as much as I wanted to get on stage, I also was just, I've never done it.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: And just just get put in and expected to know what you're doing without any preparation on that.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Like I didn't I I think we might have had understudies occasionally for certain certain rep at my studio growing up, but like not really.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: And I don't think that I ever was that.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: So I never got the chance to pop in and just see if it if it works.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: So I'm so glad we covered that too.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: And I I do think it's crucial.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: And it's I think it's always fun to hear like what really goes on behind the scenes, whether it's a professional show or even at competition.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: And with that being said, one of my other favorite episodes of the season was 173 Behind the Curtain, What You Need to Know Backstage, a competition.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Because again, like there is so much that's going on backstage that people don't even know as an audience member, as a parent.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: And like I'm I hope the parents listen to that and bit and were like, wow, wait, that really happens backstage.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: Wait, there's dancers running all over the place.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Wait, there's people standing in the way.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: And, you know, you don't think about the backstage traffic or etiquette that's expected in the theater.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, especially if you're not back there.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: And, you know, it's it's a whole show behind the scenes that has to happen for everything to run properly.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: And, you know, not to mention, like, if something is going wrong, you know, if you're doing it right as a backstage manager or or backstage staff, nobody in the front is the wiser.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: But it can be chaos and, you know, near disaster back there.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: And and hopefully the front of house doesn't notice that.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: So I think that was a good episode.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: It was informative, interesting, and just, you know, a little extra taste of of something else besides what happens on stage or in the studio.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Totally.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: And uh, Leslie, please share your final favorite episode.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: My final favorite episode was 176 Mini Dancers Who Peak Too Early.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: I just love talking about the minis because, you know, they are the future.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: The children are the future.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: And it's interesting to hear from, you know, teachers who teach the incredibly insanely talented and hardworking and driven tiny tiny dancers.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: And how how the heck they even do it?
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: Because it's a mystery to me.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: And, you know, we we uncovered a little bit of that mystery there.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: But also I think it was important for parents to notice and to understand that, you know, not every six-year-old is gonna be doing some of these insane tricks and crazy things.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: And like there is such a thing as just natural talent.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: And if you've got a kid who's that driven and who has that natural ability, things are gonna come a lot quicker and a lot easier than your standard average, you know, child.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: And I think the real realism that we brought to that perspective and to that conversation was hopefully eye-opening for a lot of parents of Tiny Dancers.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I loved that one.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: It was so great.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: Shout out to our guests on that episode.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: It was a fantastic chat and a much needed chat, I think, because as we know, those minis just keep getting fiercer and fiercer and they always blow my mind.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: I will I will say that especially this season, I feel like the minis were always the strongest age division at from what I watched at streets, everyone was strong because they bring in some extremely talented dancers in studios at streets, but the minis were always just top notch.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, like just thro we were just throwing the highest adjudication to every mini that just stepped on stage because they were that good.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: I'm like, whoa.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: But we kind of covered like, do you have to be?
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Is it a requirement to be that good that early in your dance career on that chat and the pros and cons of it?
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: So it's a great listen if you haven't listened yet.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: And um, I'm glad that that was one of your favorites.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: It was a good one.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, I could name many, many more.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: Uh, but yeah, so if you haven't, you know, if you're if you're a picker and a chooser, if you just kind of bop around during our seasons and listen to kind of what speaks to you, go back and listen to the ones that that, you know, you didn't listen to, maybe, because there's always some gems of information, uh, you know, and plenty of things that can apply to all sorts of to all sorts of listeners.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: All right, so let's share some teasers and things to look forward to this summer with making the impact.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: And the very first thing that I'm excited to announce on the podcast, and this may be the first time you're hearing it, is that we will be doing a live podcast event at Streets Nationals this summer in 2024 in Houston, Texas, at the Woodlands.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: And I'm so excited.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: This is going to be my very first Nationals with Streets as a new faculty member this season, but they um were so on board and so excited to have this live podcast event happen during their nationals event as a treat and special bonus event for all of the participating dancers, parents, teachers, whoever wants to attend.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: It's completely open to all of the attendees to participate.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: And it's going to be a QA style live podcast, like we always do.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: And we love doing these live events.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we've had a few in the past, and it's always been our hope to be able to do more of them in different places so that we can, you know, reach different dancers.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: You know, Courtney and I are located on the East Coast in New York and New Jersey.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: And so that's kind of, you know, where we're where we're based.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: But with the ability to travel and go to different nationals and different events, you know, that's always the most exciting thing is to be able to meet people live and hear from them live and put names to faces.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: And, you know, that's that's always been really fun to be able to do that.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: So live at Streets this summer, super exciting.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: So if you are already scheduled to attend Streets Nationals in July at the Woodlands, Texas, then I will definitely be seeing you there in class, but also making the impact is coming to you.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: So if you are a fan of the podcast, be sure to attend our live podcast recording.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: Like mentioned, it will be a QA.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: So get your questions prepped.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: You'll be able to ask questions straight to us on the podcast, and we will answer live in person anything about the competitive dance world.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: And we'll also be able to meet and interact with a lot of fans.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: There will be some goodies given to you, making the impact swag, as well as some giveaways happening on site.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: So I hope to see you there.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: And um, it's gonna be a blast.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: So thank you to Streets for making this possible.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: We can't wait to connect with fans in Texas this summer.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: So fun.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Well, our next fun thing that you may remember from last season is our Making the Impact Judges Choice fan favorite contest.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Woo!
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: So excited for this.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: This is something new that we introduced last year, and it's an additional bonus perk for our Making the Impact Judges Choice Award, which you've heard us distribute all season long at regionals.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: And this is a special bonus opportunity for all of the winners to get put into a fan favorite voting contest on our social media.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: And how this will work is at the end of June, all of the interested Making the Impact Award winners will have a 30-second clip of their dance displayed on our social media.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: And all of our followers and new followers and fans and friends and studio supporters, dancers, parents, whoever wants to go in and vote for your favorite dance or studio that you would like to see win our fan favorite contest.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: And what you win is a full studio spotlight episode on season six of Making the Impact.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: I think that's pretty darn cool.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: It is pretty darn cool.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: And we had a wonderful studio uh featured this past season.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: The fan favorite winner was from Stage Door School of Dance from Long Island, New York.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: It was a tap solo called Discarded, and we got to interview that studio owner and just chat all about Stage Door School of Dance, which I had heard of before, but I'm sure many people haven't.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: You know, if you're not Long Island local, you might not know them.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: But that's what I love about this is that we're going to be able to feature just whoever the fan favorite is.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: And that could be your studio.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: And how awesome would that be to have a full interview about what makes your studio special.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited to see who gets picked this season.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's and I just have to say, like, I think this is so unique for our dance industry.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: I already think it's really cool that we're able to connect with our IDA affiliated competitions to award an event from our podcast and Impact Dance Adjudicators at affiliated competitions.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: So anyone who attends our compet our affiliated competitions, which you can learn more about who is affiliated with IDA on our websites, um, you have a chance to possibly win the Making the Impact Award.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: And then with that, you not only get a shout-out on a podcast, which is pretty cool.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, what other award at competition is is out there where you actually get to hear your studio on a podcast?
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: I think we're pretty unique in that scenario.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: But then taking it one step further to actually be potentially have a full episode about your studio on a dance podcast.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's like a dream come true for every studio owner.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: I can only imagine.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: And for all the dancers to be able to say that they're part of that possibility, um, that that dance got recognized and then to hear their studio on an episode.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: It's just so special.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: And I'm so glad that we're doing this.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, same.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: And just, you know, a little tiny plug for the IDA affiliated competitions.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: It's truly a partnership that these competitions use our service as impact dance adjudicators to hire their judges.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: And then they believe in what we're doing so much that they're willing to support our podcast, which is just a branch of this business.
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: You know, Courtney is Courtney is such an incredible businesswoman that has, you know, her fingers in all these different pools.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: And so the fact that, you know, these competitions are partnering with us to promote the business, to promote the podcast, to promote the education of dancers, um, I just think that's also really special.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: And like Courtney said, you can head to our website to learn more about which competitions are IDA affiliated.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: And that just means that they use IDA judges that are vetted and background checked and pre-screened so that you get the best possible feedback for your dancers.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: Yes, totally.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: And uh the final thing that I want to mention that is coming your way this summer to be on the lookout for is we do this every year.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: And here we are in season six for our next cover art contest.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: So if you're looking at your screen right now, you will see two beautiful dancers on the cover art for season five.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: And if you've noticed, they switch every single year.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: So every single season, we have new dancers gracing our cover art, and we find these dancers through a social media contest, and dancers are able to submit their best and favorite dance shot of themselves, and they can submit multiple photos throughout the duration of the contest, and then it becomes a voting contest as well, where where all of the fans and viewers will select their favorite dancer to be featured on our cover art.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: So I want to give a shout-out to our current cover art winners from season five, Paulina in the point shoes and Reagan in the floor extension.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Y'all are stunning.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: I loved the way our cover art looked this season.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: And we will be uh running this special contest again over the month of the end of July into August.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: So stay tuned on our social media and our Instagram to learn more about how you can submit, get those dance shots ready and prepped so we can uh have you a part of this contest and maybe you will be the next dancer gracing the cover art in season six of Making the Impact.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: And just a tip.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: If you look at what our cover art looks like, you may be able to figure out the kinds of poses that are gonna make it on there.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: Just a tip.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: Just a tip.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we have to definitely figure out like which ones will coordinate properly with our logo.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: So that is a part of part of it, but at the same time, like another tip, good technique is what we're uh we're looking for good technique in these photos.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: So, you know, as and and you know, I love the ones that are also just fun and spunky.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, the joy of dance.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: If you're if you're doing something that's not like an action shot, but you want to just show like your personality in your on-stage dance photo, we're looking for joyful dancers with great technique, impressive lines, something that really says wow when we look at the dance, the dance shot.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: So get those wow dance shots prepped for us.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: We can't wait to see them.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Well, and there's there's probably a few more things, Courtney, that we can't quite announce yet that are happening this summer.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: So if you are interested in, you know, possibly seeing us in different places, uh, stay tuned.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: Stay connected with us through our Facebook group and our social media.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: Um, there will always be announcements of what we're doing, where we're gonna be at, if we're doing anything podcast related.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: Or any anything related, really.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: But if I'm somewhere, I want to see you.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: So feel free to give a wave.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: But yeah, so just stay tuned and stay connected with us.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: If you have any topics that you want to hear for season six, we are always accepting, always any time during the year, accepting emails and Facebook messages and Instagram messages about topics.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: But specifically, if you're thinking for this summer, reach out to us, send us a message, and we'll put that topic into our brainstorming list.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: Yes, and can't believe that this season is over, summer is here.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: I hope that everyone is heading out to nationals events, summer intensive, taking master classes, traveling, enjoying a vacation, um, enjoying some resting time this summer as well.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: But I hope that everyone has a dance-filled summer this year and season six.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: It's launching on Thursday, September 4th, 2024.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: So mark your calendars and stay tuned for some brand new episodes coming your way on making the impact in our next season.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: I'm already, I already can't wait for it to get here sooner than later.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: But until then, we're on summer hiatus.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: Yep.
