- 0:00How will the dead be raised? What kind of bodies
- 0:04will they have? Is there life after death?
- 0:08If there is not, many would follow the maxim,
- 0:12eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we shall die.
- 0:17How are we to live our lives knowing that
- 0:22there is going to be a resurrection to the heavenly realm?
- 0:26After we die? These are some of the
- 0:30questions that Paul raises in 1 Corinthians chapter
- 0:3415. He likens our earthly body to
- 0:37a seed that is planted in the ground,
- 0:41and when the seed dies, a new seedling
- 0:44emerges from the seed.
- 0:48How should we then live? Join us
- 0:52as we look at these questions: life from the
- 0:55dead. Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is
- 0:59August 24th. Now let's continue our journey reading through
- 1:03the entire Bible in one year.
- 1:06This week we are reading from the New Living Translation for the Old Testament
- 1:10and for the New Testament.
- 1:13Deuteronomy 12:11-32.
- 1:17You must bring everything I command you— your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes,
- 1:23your sacred offerings, and your offerings to fulfill
- 1:26a vow, to the designated place of worship, the place
- 1:30the Lord your God chooses for his name to be honored. You must
- 1:34celebrate there in the presence of the Lord your God with your sons and daughters
- 1:38and all your servants. And remember to include the Levites who live
- 1:42in your towns, for they will receive no allotment of land among you.
- 1:46Be careful not to sacrifice your burnt offerings just
- 1:50anywhere you like. You may do so only
- 1:53at the place the Lord will choose within one of your tribal territories.
- 1:59There you must offer your burnt offerings and do everything I command
- 2:03you. But you may butcher your animals and eat their meat in
- 2:07any town whenever you want. You may freely eat the animals
- 2:11with which the Lord your God blesses you. All of
- 2:14you, whether ceremonially clean or unclean, may eat that
- 2:18meat, just as you now eat gazelle and deer.
- 2:22But you must not consume the blood; you
- 2:25must pour it out on the ground like water. But you may
- 2:29not eat your offerings in your hometown, neither the tithe
- 2:33of your grain and new wine and olive oil, nor the firstborn
- 2:37of your flocks and herds, nor any offering to fulfill a vow,
- 2:41nor your voluntary offerings, nor your sacred offerings.
- 2:45You must eat these in the presence of the Lord your God at the place
- 2:49he will choose. Eat them there with your children, your servants, and the
- 2:54Levites who live in your towns, celebrating in the presence of the Lord your God
- 2:58in all you do. And be very careful never to
- 3:01neglect the Levites as long as you live in your land.
- 3:05When the Lord your God expands your territory as He has promised,
- 3:09and you have the urge to eat meat, you may freely eat meat
- 3:13whenever you want. It might happen that the designated place
- 3:18of worship the place the Lord your God chooses for His name to be honored,
- 3:22is a long way from your home. If so,
- 3:25you may butcher any of the cattle, sheep, or goats the Lord has given you,
- 3:30and you may freely eat the meat in your hometown, as I have commanded
- 3:34you. Anyone, whether ceremonially clean or unclean,
- 3:38may eat that meat, just as you do now with gazelle and
- 3:41deer. But never consume the blood.
- 3:45For the blood is the life, and you must not consume the lifeblood with
- 3:49the meat. Instead, pour out the blood on the
- 3:53ground like water. Do not consume
- 3:57the blood, so that all may go well with you and your children after you,
- 4:00because you will be doing what pleases the Lord. Take your sacred
- 4:05gifts and your offerings given to fulfill a vow to, to the place
- 4:09the Lord chooses. You must offer the meat and blood of your
- 4:12burnt offerings on the altar of the Lord your God.
- 4:15The blood of your other sacrifices must be poured out on the altar
- 4:19of the Lord your God, but you may eat the meat. Be careful
- 4:23to obey all my commands so that all will go well with
- 4:27you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good
- 4:31and pleasing to the Lord your God. When the Lord your God goes ahead of
- 4:36you and destroys the nations and you drive them out and live in their land,
- 4:39do not fall into the trap of following their customs and worshiping
- 4:43their gods. Do not inquire after their gods saying,
- 4:48how do you— how do these nations worship their gods?
- 4:51I want to follow their example. You must not worship the Lord
- 4:55your God the way other nations worship their gods, for they perform for
- 5:00their gods every detestable act that the Lord hates. They even burn
- 5:04their sons and daughters as sacrifices to
- 5:07their gods. So be careful to obey all
- 5:11the commands I give you. You must not add anything to
- 5:14them or subtract anything from them.
- 5:25Job 12:1-15, 35.
- 5:29Then Job spoke again, You, Zophar, really know everything,
- 5:33don't you? And when you die, wisdom will die with you.
- 5:36Well, I know a few things myself, and you're no better than I am.
- 5:40Who doesn't know these things you've been saying? Yet my friends laugh
- 5:43at me. I am a man who calls on God and receives an answer.
- 5:48I am a just and blameless man, yet they laugh at me.
- 5:51People who are at ease mock those in trouble. They give
- 5:55a push to people who are stumbling. But even robbers are left
- 5:59in peace, and those who provoke God and God has them in His power
- 6:03live in safety. Ask the animals and they will teach you.
- 6:07Ask the birds of the sky and they will tell you. Speak to the
- 6:11earth, and it will instruct you. Let the fish of the sea speak to
- 6:15you. They all know that the Lord has done this, for the life of every
- 6:19living thing is in His hand, and the breath of all humanity.
- 6:24Just as the mouth tastes good food, so the ear tests
- 6:28the words it hears. Wisdom belongs to the aged,
- 6:32and understanding to those who have lived many years.
- 6:36But true wisdom and power are with God; counsel and understanding
- 6:40are His. What He destroys cannot be rebuilt.
- 6:44When He closes in on someone, there is no escape. If He
- 6:48holds back the rain, the earth becomes a desert.
- 6:51If He releases the waters, they flood the earth.
- 6:54Yes, strength and wisdom are with Him; deceivers
- 6:58and deceived are both in His power. He leads counselors
- 7:02away stripped of good judgment. He drives judges to
- 7:06madness. He removes the royal robe of kings. With ropes
- 7:11around their waists, they are led away. He leads priests away stripped
- 7:15of status. He overthrows the mighty. He silences the trusted
- 7:20advisor, and he removes the insight of the elders.
- 7:23He pours disgrace upon princes and confiscates weapons
- 7:27from the strong. He floods the darkness
- 7:31with light. He brings light to the deepest gloom.
- 7:34He raises up nations and he destroys them. He makes
- 7:39nations expand and he abandons them. He takes away the understanding
- 7:43of kings and he leaves them wandering in a wasteland
- 7:46without a path. They grope in the darkness without a light.
- 7:50He makes them stagger like drunkards.
- 7:53Look, I have seen many instances such as you describe.
- 7:57I understand what you are saying. I know as much as you do.
- 8:01You are no better than I am. Oh, how long— how I
- 8:05long to speak directly to the Almighty. I want
- 8:09to argue my case with God himself, for you are smearing
- 8:12me with lies. As doctors, you are worthless
- 8:15quacks. Please be quiet.
- 8:19That's the smartest thing you could do. Listen to my charge.
- 8:22Pay attention to my arguments. Are you defending God by
- 8:26means of lies and dishonest arguments? You should be impartial
- 8:30witnesses, but will you slant your testimony in his
- 8:34favor? Will you argue, argue God's case for
- 8:37him? Be careful that he doesn't find out what you are doing.
- 8:41Or do you think you can fool him as easily as you fool people?
- 8:45No, you will be in serious trouble with him.
- 8:48If even in your hearts you slant your testimony in his favor?
- 8:53Doesn't His Majesty strike terror into your heart?
- 8:57Does not your fear of him seize you? Your statements have about
- 9:01as much value as ashes. Your defense is as fragile
- 9:06as a clay pot. Be silent now and leave me alone.
- 9:10Let me speak, and I will face the consequences. Yes,
- 9:14I will take my life in my own hands and say what I really think.
- 9:18God might kill me, but I cannot wait. I am going
- 9:21to argue my case with Him. But this is what will save me,
- 9:26that I am not godless. If I were, I would be thrown from
- 9:29His presence. Listen closely to what I am about
- 9:33to say. Hear me out. I have prepared my case. I will
- 9:37be proved innocent. Who can argue with me over this?
- 9:41If you could prove me wrong, I would remain silent
- 9:45until I die. O God, there are 2 things I beg of you,
- 9:50and I will be able to face you. Remove your hand from me
- 9:53and don't terrify me with your awesome presence. Now summon me
- 9:57and I will answer, or let me speak to you and you reply.
- 10:01Tell me, what have I done wrong? Show me my rebellion
- 10:05and my sin. Why do you turn away from me? Why do you
- 10:09consider me your enemy? Would you terrify a leaf that is blown
- 10:12by the wind? Would you chase a dry stalk of grass?
- 10:16You write bitter accusations against me and bring up all the sins of
- 10:20my youth. You put my feet in stocks. You watch
- 10:24all my paths. You trace all my footprints.
- 10:28I waste away like rotting wood, like a moth-eaten coat.
- 10:32How frail is humanity! How short is life and
- 10:36how full of trouble! Like a flower, we blossom for a
- 10:40moment and then wither. Like the shadow of a passing cloud,
- 10:43we quickly disappear. Must You keep an eye on such
- 10:47a frail creature and demand an accounting from me? Who can create
- 10:51purity in one born impure? No one!
- 10:54You have decided the length of our days. You know how many months
- 10:59we will live, and we are not given a minute longer. So give us a
- 11:02little rest, won't you? Turn away your angry stare. We are like
- 11:07hired hands, so let us finish the task you have given us. If a tree
- 11:12is cut down, there is hope that it will sprout again and grow new branches.
- 11:16Though its roots have grown old in the earth and its stump decays,
- 11:20at the scent of water it may bud and sprout again like a new seedling.
- 11:24But when people die, they lose all strength.
- 11:28They breathe their last, and then where are they? As water
- 11:32evaporates from a lake, and as a river disappears
- 11:35in drought, people lie down and do not rise again.
- 11:39Until the heavens are no more, they will not wake up nor be roused
- 11:44from their sleep. I wish You would hide me with the dead
- 11:47and forget me there until Your anger has passed.
- 11:51But mark Your calendar to think of me again. If mortals die,
- 11:54can they live again? This thought would give me hope, and through my
- 11:59struggle I would eagerly wait for release. You would call and I
- 12:02would answer, and You would yearn for me, Your handiwork.
- 12:06For then You would count my steps instead of watching for
- 12:10my sins. My sins would be sealed in a pouch, and You would cover
- 12:14over my iniquity. But as mountains fall and
- 12:17crumble, and as rocks fall from a cliff,
- 12:21as water wears away the stones and floods wash away the soil,
- 12:25So you destroy people's hope. You always
- 12:29overpower them, and then they pass from the scene.
- 12:32You disfigure them in death and send them away. They never
- 12:37know if their sons grow up in honor or sink to insignificance.
- 12:41They are absorbed in their own pain and grief.
- 12:46Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied, You are supposed to be
- 12:50a wise man, and yet you give us all this foolish talk. You are
- 12:55nothing but a windbag! It isn't right to speak so foolishly.
- 12:59What good do such words do? Have you no fear of
- 13:02God, no reverence for Him? Your sins are
- 13:06telling your mouth what to say. Your words are based on clever deception.
- 13:11But why should I condemn you? Your own mouth does.
- 13:15Were you the first person ever born? Were you born before
- 13:19the hills were made? Were you listening at God's secret council?
- 13:23Do you have a monopoly on wisdom? What do you know
- 13:26that we don't? What do you understand that we don't?
- 13:30On our side are aged gray-haired men much older than
- 13:34your father. Is God's comfort too little for you?
- 13:37Is His gentle word not enough? What has captured your reason?
- 13:42What has weakened your vision that you turn against God and say
- 13:45all these evil things? Can a mortal be pure?
- 13:49Can a human be just? Why, God doesn't even trust the angels.
- 13:54Even the heavens cannot be absolutely pure in his sight. How much
- 13:58less pure is a corrupt and sinful person with
- 14:02a thirst for wickedness? If you will listen, I will answer
- 14:06you from my own experience, and it is confirmed by the experience
- 14:10of wise men who have heard the same thing from their fathers. Those to
- 14:14whom the land was given long before any foreigners arrived.
- 14:18Wicked people are in pain throughout their lives. They are
- 14:22surrounded by terrors, and even on good days they fear the attack of the destroyer.
- 14:27They dare not go out into the darkness for fear they will be
- 14:31murdered. They wander abroad for bread, saying, where is it?
- 14:35They know their ruin is certain. That dark day terrifies
- 14:39them. They live in distress and anguish, like a king preparing
- 14:42for an attack. For they have clenched their fists against God,
- 14:46defying the Almighty. Holding their strong shields, they defiantly
- 14:51charge against Him. These wicked people are fat and rich,
- 14:54but their cities will be ruined. They will live in abandoned
- 14:59houses that are ready to tumble down. They will not continue to be
- 15:02rich. Their wealth will not endure, and their possessions will
- 15:06no longer spread across the horizon. They will not escape
- 15:10the darkness. The flame will burn them up, and the breath of God
- 15:14will destroy everything they have. Let them no longer trust in
- 15:18empty riches. They are only fooling themselves, for emptiness
- 15:22will be their only reward. They will be cut down in the prime of life,
- 15:26and all they counted on will disappear.
- 15:30They will be like a vine whose grapes are harvested before they are
- 15:34ripe.
- 15:38Like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms so the fruit cannot
- 15:41form. For the godless are barren.
- 15:45Their homes, enriched through bribery, will be consumed
- 15:50by fire. They conceive trouble and evil, and their hearts
- 15:55give birth only to deceit.
- 16:011 Corinthians 15:29-58.
- 16:04If the dead will not be raised, then what point is there in people
- 16:08being baptized for those who are dead? Why do it
- 16:12unless the dead will someday rise again? And why should
- 16:16we ourselves be continually risking our lives, facing death hour
- 16:20by hour? For I swear, dear brothers and sisters, I face
- 16:24death daily. This is as certain as my pride
- 16:28in what the Lord Jesus Christ has done in you. And what value
- 16:32was there in fighting wild beasts Those men
- 16:35of Ephesus, if there will be no resurrection from the
- 16:39dead, if there is no resurrection, let's feast and get drunk,
- 16:43for tomorrow we die. Don't be fooled by
- 16:47those who say such things, for bad company corrupts good character.
- 16:51Come to your senses and stop sinning, for to your shame I
- 16:55say that some of you don't even know God. But someone may ask,
- 16:59how will the dead be raised? What kind of bodies will they have?
- 17:03What a foolish question! When you put a seed into the ground, it doesn't
- 17:07grow into a plant until it dies first.
- 17:12And what you put into the ground is not the plant
- 17:16that will grow, but only a dry little seed of wheat or whatever
- 17:20it is you are planting. Then God gives it a new body, just the
- 17:24kind he wants it to have. A different kind of plant grows from each
- 17:28kind of seed, and just as there are different kinds of seeds and
- 17:32plants, so also there are different kinds of flesh,
- 17:35whether of humans, animals, birds, or fish.
- 17:40There are bodies in the heavens and there are bodies on earth.
- 17:44The glory of the heavenly bodies is different from the beauty of
- 17:49the earthly bodies. The sun has one kind of glory,
- 17:52while the moon and stars each have another kind, and even the stars
- 17:56differ from each other in their beauty and brightness. It is
- 18:00the same way for the resurrection of the dead.
- 18:03Our earthly bodies, which die and decay, will be different
- 18:07when they are resurrected, for they will never die. Our bodies
- 18:11now disappoint us, but when they are raised,
- 18:15they will be full of glory. They are weak now, but when they are raised,
- 18:20they will be full of power. They are natural
- 18:24human bodies now, but when they are raised, They will be spiritual
- 18:28bodies. For just as there are natural bodies, so also
- 18:31there are spiritual bodies. The scriptures tell us
- 18:35the first man, Adam, became a living person, but the last Adam,
- 18:40that is Christ, is a life-giving spirit.
- 18:43What came first was the natural body, then the spiritual body comes
- 18:47later. Adam, the first man, was made from the dust
- 18:51of the earth, while Christ, the second man, came from heaven.
- 18:54Every human being has an earthly body just like Adam's,
- 18:58but our heavenly bodies will be just like Christ's.
- 19:02Just as we are now like Adam, the man of the earth, so we
- 19:06will someday be like Christ, the Man from heaven.
- 19:09What I am saying, dear brothers and sisters, is that flesh and
- 19:13blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.
- 19:17These perishable bodies of ours are not able to live forever.
- 19:21But let me tell you a wonderful secret God has revealed to us.
- 19:25Not all of us will die, but we will all be
- 19:29transformed. It will happen in a moment,
- 19:33in the blinking of an eye, when the last trumpet
- 19:38is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, the Christians
- 19:41who have died will be raised with transformed bodies,
- 19:45and then we who are living will be transformed so
- 19:50that we will never die. Where our perishable earthly bodies must
- 19:54be transformed into heavenly bodies that will never die.
- 19:58When this happens, when our perishable earthly bodies
- 20:01have been transformed into heavenly bodies that will never die,
- 20:06then at last the Scriptures will come true: Death
- 20:10is swallowed up in victory. O death,
- 20:13where is your sting? O death, where is your sting?
- 20:17For sin is the sting that results in death, and the
- 20:21Law gives sin its power. How we
- 20:25can thank God who gives us victory over sin
- 20:28and death through Jesus Christ our
- 20:32Lord! So, my dear brothers and sisters,
- 20:35be strong and steady, always enthusiastic about
- 20:39the Lord's work, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord
- 20:43is ever useless.
- 20:48Psalm 39:1-13.
- 20:52I said to myself, I will watch what I do and not sin in
- 20:56what I say. I will curb my tongue when the ungodly
- 21:00are around me. But as I stood there in silence,
- 21:04not even speaking of good things, the turmoil within
- 21:07me grew to the bursting point. My thoughts grew hot
- 21:11within me and began to burn. Igniting a fire of words.
- 21:15Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.
- 21:19Remind me that my days are numbered and that my
- 21:23life is fleeing away. My life is no longer than
- 21:27the width of my hand. An entire lifetime is just a
- 21:31moment to You. Human existence is but a
- 21:35breath.
- 21:41We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing
- 21:45ends in nothing. We heap up wealth for someone else
- 21:50to spend. And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?
- 21:53My only hope is in you. Rescue me from
- 21:57my rebellion, for even fools mock me when I rebel.
- 22:02I am silent before you. I won't say a word, for my
- 22:06punishment is from You. Please don't punish me anymore.
- 22:11I am exhausted by the blows from Your hand. When You discipline
- 22:15people for their sins, their lives can be crushed like the life of a moth.
- 22:20Human existence is as frail as a breath.
- 22:24Hear my prayer, O Lord. Listen to my cries for help.
- 22:28Don't ignore my tears. For I am your guest,
- 22:32a traveler passing through, as my ancestors
- 22:35were before me. Spare me so I can smile again before
- 22:39I am gone and exist no more.
- 22:45Proverbs 21:30-31.
- 22:49Human plans, no matter how wise or well-advised, cannot stand
- 22:53against the Lord. The horses are prepared for battle, but the
- 22:57victory belongs to the Lord. I want
- 23:01to speak to you today from our reading for 1 Corinthians chapter 15.
- 23:05And in this chapter, Paul is addressing a
- 23:09heresy that has come up, that there have been those
- 23:13who have come forth and said there is no resurrection of the dead,
- 23:17that when you die, that's it, that's the end of life. And Paul is
- 23:20addressing this head-on, and he goes on
- 23:24to say, he makes a comparison to a seed.
- 23:29That when the seed is planted in the ground,
- 23:33it dies, and out of that dead seed,
- 23:36a new plant comes forth. He says in verse 36,
- 23:41when you put a seed into the ground, it doesn't grow into a plant unless
- 23:45it dies first. And what you put in the ground is not the plant
- 23:49that will grow, but only a dry little seed of wheat
- 23:54or whatever it is you are planting. Then God gives it a
- 23:57new body, just the kind He wants it to have.
- 24:02So really, this whole passage is addressing
- 24:06destiny, purpose, and our earthly
- 24:10life, which will eventually lead to a heavenly life.
- 24:15The seed is our earthly life,
- 24:19and when you think about it, every one of us is like a living,
- 24:22breathing, walking seed. And when we die,
- 24:25that seed goes into the ground, and then a
- 24:29plant comes forth, issues forth out of the ground,
- 24:32out of the soil, and that plant, that new life, is your heavenly body,
- 24:37your heavenly life in heaven.
- 24:41In verse 42, it goes on to say it is the same way for the
- 24:44resurrection of the dead. Our earthly bodies, which die and
- 24:48decay, will be different when they are resurrected, for they will never die.
- 24:54And when, when we are raised, we will be full of glory.
- 24:58Our body now is weak, but when we are raised,
- 25:02we will be full of power. We are natural human bodies now,
- 25:06but when we are raised, we will be spiritual bodies.
- 25:11And so what kind of a seed are
- 25:16you in the process of becoming?
- 25:19When there's different kinds of seeds, there's watermelon seeds and orange seeds
- 25:23and apple seeds and avocado seeds, all different kinds of seeds.
- 25:27What kind of a seed are you becoming?
- 25:31Everything about the life of that plant is embedded in the
- 25:35seed, in the DNA of that seed. And so depending
- 25:39upon how you are filling
- 25:43up your mind and your heart and your soul with worldly
- 25:47things or with the things of God, if you are eating
- 25:51and consuming nothing but materialistic things,
- 25:55or if you're filling your soul and your spirit with the Word of
- 25:58God and with spending time with Him,
- 26:03it— that's going to shape the kind of seed that you are.
- 26:07And we don't have to be afraid of the moment of death because the moment
- 26:11of death, when we come to that time of death, it is
- 26:15the seed that is being sown into the ground and that
- 26:18will be raised into eternal life. When we die,
- 26:23we will immediately be in the presence of the Lord if
- 26:26we are truly born again. He goes on to say about
- 26:31the blessed hope that we have in Christ, that there is a
- 26:34day coming, if you want to call
- 26:38it the Rapture or the
- 26:42taking away, the gathering in. He speaks about it here
- 26:46in verse 51. But let me tell you a wonderful secret
- 26:50God has revealed to us. Not all of us will die,
- 26:54but we will all be transformed.
- 26:58It will happen in a moment, in the blinking of
- 27:02an eye when the last trumpet is blown.
- 27:05For when the trumpet sounds, the Christians who have died will be raised
- 27:10with transformed bodies, and then we who
- 27:13are living will also be transformed so
- 27:17that we will never die.
- 27:21For our perishable earthly bodies must be transformed
- 27:25into heavenly bodies that will never die.
- 27:28So he's talking about the rapture,
- 27:31that when that happens, those who are dead in Christ will be raised
- 27:35up from the dead. They'll be given a glorified heavenly body,
- 27:39and then we who are alive shall also be transformed,
- 27:44and we will be caught up together with Him in the clouds and be with
- 27:47Him forever and ever and ever. And so that's
- 27:51an incredible moment in time that is our destiny.
- 27:56It is in our future. It hasn't happened yet, but it is our
- 27:59blessed, blessed hope.
- 28:03So I don't know what you're dealing with as you listen, if you're fighting a
- 28:07battle of cancer, if you have a long-term illness,
- 28:11if you have long-term pain, chronic pain of some kind,
- 28:17or whatever you might be dealing with. But this is the blessed
- 28:21hope that there is a day coming when we will all get a—
- 28:24be transformed, and we won't have an earthly body anymore.
- 28:28We'll have a heavenly body, and we shall live together with Him forever
- 28:32and ever and ever in eternity in Heaven with Jesus.
- 28:36So our time here on this earth is training time.
- 28:41It's preparation time. It's our pre-life. Our real life
- 28:45is coming when we are with Jesus in Heaven. And so
- 28:49make your time count. Make every
- 28:53moment and every hour and every day count.
- 28:59It matters how you spend your life, that you
- 29:03keep your focus on Jesus, that you hear His voice,
- 29:07that you follow Him and obey Him, and that His purpose
- 29:11and His destiny for your life is fulfilled,
- 29:15that you would Complete the mission He has given to you.
- 29:18He's given you assignments and tasks that
- 29:22you would walk in step with Him and hear His heartbeat
- 29:25and be led gently by Him.
- 29:29Have a blessed day, and we'll see you tomorrow. Shalom.
