- 0:10Welcome back to Randy Unscripted.
- 0:12I'm Randy Black, and this is
- 0:14episode number 28 in our NAPOD
- 0:17Pomo series for 2025.
- 0:20We are in the home stretch. Remember, NAPOD Pomo, national
- 0:23podcast post month. The goal was to post 30 episodes
- 0:26in thirty days.
- 0:29After this one, we have two left.
- 0:33Now Thanksgiving is it's barely behind us, yet the shift into Christmas mode
- 0:39hits the world today like a freight train.
- 0:42You know how it goes. The the Thanksgiving dishes aren't even washed
- 0:46before the flood of advertisements hits.
- 0:50Black Friday,
- 0:51small business Saturday,
- 0:53Cyber Monday,
- 0:55emails, notifications, store hours, countdown timers, all telling us we need to buy something right now.
- 1:03And every year, I'm reminded of how
- 1:06easy it is even for
- 1:08believers
- 1:09in God and in Christ
- 1:11to get swept up in that noise.
- 1:13Today,
- 1:15I wanna take a moment and pull away from all of that and refocus our hearts on something much deeper,
- 1:21much older,
- 1:23and far more meaningful,
- 1:25the birth of Jesus Christ.
- 1:28This isn't going to be a don't buy anything message.
- 1:32It's simply a reminder that Christmas didn't begin in a shopping mall.
- 1:36It began
- 1:38many, many, many years ago
- 1:40in a little town called Bethlehem
- 1:43in a manger.
- 1:46We live in a culture
- 1:49that measures Christmas
- 1:50by spending,
- 1:52how much we buy,
- 1:54how early we shop,
- 1:56how big the gifts are,
- 1:58and how fast things sell out.
- 2:01The world calls this the season of giving, but often
- 2:05the giving is just commercial exchange.
- 2:09The irony is that as the sales get louder,
- 2:12the message of Christmas
- 2:14gets quieter.
- 2:16But scripture
- 2:17gives us a very different picture.
- 2:20Long before stores opened at 4AM or websites
- 2:24tracked their clicks in the carts, and, you know, there was a night where
- 2:29God
- 2:30interrupted history with a kind of gift that
- 2:34no earthly store
- 2:37could ever provide us.
- 2:40Let's look in Galatians chapter four
- 2:43verses four and five where Paul writes,
- 2:46but when the fullness of the time was come,
- 2:49God sent forth his son made of a woman,
- 2:52made under the law to redeem them that were under the law that we might receive the adoption of sons.
- 3:00Christmas,
- 3:02it didn't appear because a retailer put it on the calendar.
- 3:05It happened
- 3:07because the fullness of God's
- 3:09timing had finally arrived.
- 3:14If you go back to the account in Luke
- 3:17chapter two,
- 3:19God announces Christmas not to kings,
- 3:22not to wealthy,
- 3:25not to the influential,
- 3:27but to the shepherds,
- 3:30people on the fringes,
- 3:33people with no platform,
- 3:36people who worked through the night while everyone else was fast asleep.
- 3:42Luke chapter two verses eight through 11 says, And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field,
- 3:49keeping watch over their flock by night.
- 3:52And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them.
- 3:55And the angel said unto them, fear not, for behold,
- 3:59I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
- 4:04For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior,
- 4:08which is Christ the Lord.
- 4:12No flashing lights.
- 4:15No countdown.
- 4:17No deals ending at midnight.
- 4:19Just good tidings
- 4:21of great joy
- 4:23for all people.
- 4:25And that joy wasn't rooted in possessions
- 4:28or in decorations
- 4:29or seasonal routines.
- 4:32It was rooted in a person,
- 4:34Jesus Christ,
- 4:36the promised Messiah.
- 4:40If we want to look and talk about the real meaning of Christmas,
- 4:44we need to look to John chapter one verse 14.
- 4:49There it says,
- 4:50and the word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory
- 4:57as of the only begotten of the father,
- 5:00full of grace
- 5:01and truth.
- 5:04That right there is Christmas.
- 5:06Not the wrapping paper,
- 5:09not the stockings,
- 5:11not the shopping list.
- 5:14God came near.
- 5:16God stepped into humanity.
- 5:19God dwelt with us.
- 5:21You won't find a sale that compares to that miracle anywhere today.
- 5:27Now
- 5:29I understand
- 5:30the world we live in.
- 5:32We buy gifts. We decorate. We participate in holiday traditions,
- 5:36and there's there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
- 5:40I'm not against Christmas shopping.
- 5:43What I'm saying is this,
- 5:46don't let the commercial rhythm
- 5:49become the spiritual meaning.
- 5:52Take time to slow down and remember why we celebrate it all.
- 5:56Reflect on the birth of Jesus in ways that draw your heart closer to him.
- 6:02Read the Christmas account in Luke one and two. Let the word speak to you fresh this season.
- 6:09Pray for opportunities to share the hope of Christ.
- 6:13Someone you know needs more than a gift.
- 6:16They need the gospel.
- 6:18Keep your celebrations centered upon gratitude,
- 6:22not for what's under the tree,
- 6:24but for the one who hung on the cross.
- 6:27And let generosity come from the heart,
- 6:30not the advertisements.
- 6:32Give
- 6:33not because marketing pressured you to,
- 6:36but because God has given so richly to you.
- 6:43At the core of it all,
- 6:45Christmas
- 6:46is a declaration
- 6:47of God's love.
- 6:49First John chapter four verse nine puts it beautifully.
- 6:54In this was manifested the love of God toward us
- 6:57because that God sent his only begotten son into the world that we might live through him.
- 7:06That's the heart of the season,
- 7:09life
- 7:10eternal
- 7:11and abundant
- 7:12through Jesus Christ.
- 7:15The world tries to make Christmas temporary,
- 7:19one weekend, one big sale, one frantic moment,
- 7:23but God makes Christmas eternal,
- 7:26the coming of the Savior
- 7:28who changes
- 7:29everything.
- 7:33As you move through this weekend, whether you're shopping or resting, decorating, or spending more time with your loved ones,
- 7:40remember this as we move forward.
- 7:44Christmas
- 7:45is not an event driven by consumerism.
- 7:48It is a celebration
- 7:50driven
- 7:51by God's love.
- 7:53Let the birth of Jesus anchor you.
- 7:57Let his peace quiet the noise around you,
- 8:01and let his presence
- 8:02shape your joy
- 8:04because the world can market products,
- 8:07but only Christ
- 8:09can bring salvation.
- 8:12Thank you for joining me on another episode of Randy unscripted.

- 8:22May your hearts
- 8:24stay centered on Jesus
- 8:26as we move forward
- 8:28toward the Christmas season.

- 8:33of Randy Unscripted.
