- Dana: My neighbor texted me at 9 on Friday night. She's got a tray of her daughter's birthday cupcakes, a bowl of buttercream, and a little jar of gold shimmer she's never opened. One question: if I put this on the cupcakes, will the kids taste it? Margaux: The question everybody eventually whispers at the jar — what does edible glitter actually taste like? Welcome to The Monégasque Table. An Ask the Table short: one question, one straight answer, back to your frosting. Dana: And I get to poke at the answer. Margaux: You always do. Here's the answer up front: it tastes like nothing. Truly nothing. It's an odorless, flavorless mineral powder — it won't change the taste of a drink or a bake. Her cupcakes will taste exactly like her cupcakes. Just shinier. Dana: "Nothing" is a big claim. Everything tastes like something. Flour does. Water does, if you're paying attention. Margaux: Fair — here's why this one's different. Glitter isn't a sugar or a candy. It's a mineral — mica-based pigment — and it's almost insoluble in water. It won't melt into frosting or steep into a drink like tea. Flavor has to dissolve to reach you. This just floats there, being shiny. Dana: So it's not really an ingredient. It's more like… edible light. Margaux: That's the whole job. It changes what food looks like and nothing else. And it's heat-stable — bake it right onto a cupcake and it comes out the same. Dana: Okay, but taste isn't my whole worry. Smell counts. Texture counts. Am I going to feel grit in the buttercream? Margaux: Smell's the easy one — it's on paper: the safety data sheet describes an odorless powder. Nothing to sniff. Texture is about amounts. The drink guidance is 0.1 grams a glass — a tenth of a gram. Your kitchen scale won't even blink. Pinches, not spoonfuls — and reviewers keep repeating it: a little goes a long way. Dana: Is that real people talking, or the label talking? Margaux: Real people. There's an analysis of about 2,400 category reviews, and two phrases keep surfacing: "no taste or smell," and "fun without changing the taste." That second one could be your neighbor by Saturday. Dana: Alright. So the crowd agrees with the label. That's rare. Margaux: And here's my favorite number in the whole analysis. The single biggest taste-related complaint in this category — 18.4 percent of the negative mentions — is "no flavor." People upset it doesn't taste like anything. Dana: (laughs) Hold on. The top taste complaint is that it tastes the way it's supposed to taste? Margaux: That's the complaint. Dana: Okay, I'll defend those people, because they're telling you something real. Some folks want the sparkle to be the treat — a topping that tastes like candy. Sugar, crunch, the whole carnival. If that's you, glitter is the wrong jar. Buy sprinkles. That's not settling; that's the right tool. Margaux: That's the round you win — and it's the honest skip list: if you want the topping to add flavor, skip glitter. It decorates; it doesn't season. The product pages even sell it that way — the flavor line on the listing is one word, "tasteless," and the copy says it adds sparkle and color without adding any sugar. For plenty of parents, that's the entire point. Dana: So the recap is short. Tastes like nothing. Smells like nothing. Changes nothing — the cake stays the cake, the drink stays the drink. And if you want a topping with flavor, sprinkles are your friend. Margaux: That's the whole answer, and it's been checked at scale — over 400,000 orders across the US, Canada and the UK, and the gold jar holds 4.6 stars across 6,669 Amazon ratings. That is a lot of birthday cakes that still tasted like birthday cake. If your neighbor wants the cake-sized version, the MONÉGASQUE 7 gram luster dust jars — made for frosting and bakes — are on Amazon. Dana: She texted back, by the way. The cupcakes went out gold. Nobody said one word about taste — a kid just licked the frosting clean off the top. Margaux: The only taste test that counts. Next time on the show, the bigger question behind all of these: does the FDA approve edible glitter? The real answer is more useful than a yes or a no — and it changes how you read every jar in the aisle. Dana: I have opinions about labels. Margaux: Save them. This show is made with AI-crafted hosts and human-checked facts. See you at the table.
