Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Stuart Nash: Former Labour minister discusses potential return to parliament with NZ First
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: A few things came out of the news on first
- 0:01Speaker 1: annual meeting at the weekend. Winston wants Kiwi Savia contributions
- 0:04Speaker 1: at ten percent funded by tax cuts. No detail on that.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Also on the wish list, they want new migrants to
- 0:10Speaker 1: sign a value statement. Stuart Nash, former Labor cabinet minister,
- 0:13Speaker 1: was there. He was speaking. He's with us now. Good morning, Brian,
- 0:16Speaker 1: how are you?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Good morning?
- 0:17Speaker 1: Very good, thank you.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:18Speaker 1: The text machines lit up when I mentioned you were
- 0:20Speaker 1: coming on the show. I just wants to get back
- 0:22Speaker 1: into parliament. He's desperate and we can't trust Winston not
- 0:26Speaker 1: to go with Labor again. Are you the bridge that's
- 0:28Speaker 1: going to connect the two.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Oh a god, I don't know about that, but you
- 0:32Speaker 2: know all the stuff that can't wait to get back
- 0:34Speaker 2: into parliament in these desperate people tend to forget that.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Well if they even knew in the first place that
- 0:38Speaker 2: if you're a cabinet minister and you only get into
- 0:40Speaker 2: Parliment to be a cabinet ministers, that's how you effect change.
- 0:42Speaker 2: It's eighty to one hundred hours a week continuous. That
- 0:45Speaker 2: includes that's seven days a week. It's not a job
- 0:48Speaker 2: for the faint hearted. You lose contact with your mates,
- 0:50Speaker 2: and you know, you don't see much time with your family.
- 0:53Speaker 2: So you know, I'm not trying a run. Don't want
- 0:56Speaker 2: to paint a sub story here, but I do want
- 0:58Speaker 2: to say, you know, I've got business I've started. I'm
- 1:00Speaker 2: really enjoying it. I'm loving the fact that I can
- 1:03Speaker 2: go and have a bear with my mates and not
- 1:05Speaker 2: have some clown with a cell phone take a photo
- 1:06Speaker 2: of the me and put it up on social media.
- 1:08Speaker 2: So the reason if I get back in department, the
- 1:10Speaker 2: reason I am is just un finished business. I think
- 1:12Speaker 2: the stuff that needs to be done to make this
- 1:14Speaker 2: country better than it is, and you know, and the
- 1:18Speaker 2: opportunity to do that exists.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Are you actually have you officially have you put a
- 1:23Speaker 1: submission in to be you know, is there an official
- 1:26Speaker 1: consideration actually happening.
- 1:29Speaker 2: No, as with every party, there's a nomination process. They
- 1:32Speaker 2: haven't open with the ZILM First yet, so you know
- 1:35Speaker 2: there's a process to go through. Obviously, by attending the
- 1:38Speaker 2: JILM First conference, I said a pretty clear message that
- 1:41Speaker 2: that's my politics live these days, and if I have
- 1:43Speaker 2: to go back in department, that's it would be what.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Is your understanding of Winston ruling out working with labor,
- 1:48Speaker 1: is it just under Chippy?
- 1:51Speaker 2: Well, he my understands he's never actually ruled out working
- 1:54Speaker 2: with labor. He's ruled out working with Hipkins. And so
- 1:58Speaker 2: you know it presents an instant a lemaphila. But if
- 2:00Speaker 2: they end up with say thirty six percent and zero,
- 2:03Speaker 2: Thirsty end up with sixteen. But you know that's obviously
- 2:06Speaker 2: a discussion way above my pay grade. I mean, I'm
- 2:08Speaker 2: not even on.
- 2:10Speaker 1: But it's such an important question, isn't it. Because the
- 2:13Speaker 1: right felt they were completely dicked over by Winston Peters
- 2:17Speaker 1: when he went with you cinda rejoin.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Well again, that's that's a question you'll have to put
- 2:22Speaker 2: to Winston. The bottom line is that there's a lot
- 2:26Speaker 2: of water to going to the bridge. I think there's
- 2:28Speaker 2: a whole lot of people on the left or no,
- 2:30Speaker 2: not the left or the center, which is where my
- 2:32Speaker 2: politics sort of stands. That they look at the Party
- 2:35Speaker 2: marriage they're just a protest movement, they really are. You
- 2:37Speaker 2: look at the Greens and what Chloe wants to do,
- 2:40Speaker 2: you know, hip hip consess to come out and say,
- 2:43Speaker 2: you know, show some balls and say, okay, am I
- 2:46Speaker 2: going to rule out working putting a capital gains text,
- 2:48Speaker 2: and am I going to rule out putting a wealth text?
- 2:50Speaker 2: And Chloe wants to increase the tax rate for corporates
- 2:54Speaker 2: at a point in time when our economy needs priming,
- 2:56Speaker 2: not not stifling. There's a whole lot of questions that
- 2:59Speaker 2: hip consister, aren't the question for voters before anyone would
- 3:04Speaker 2: I think even consider the left. But again that's a
- 3:06Speaker 2: decision for Winston. There's a lot of water to going
- 3:07Speaker 2: to the bridge at that point.
- 3:08Speaker 1: On Stuart, appreciate your time. Stuart Nash, former Labour Cabinet minister,
- 3:11Speaker 1: potential future New Zealand First ministered.
