- 3:50Oh yeah, once again, thank you to Silk City Hot Sauce for sponsoring
- 3:53the Lone Gunman podcast. You know who doesn't like the Lone Gunman Podcast?
- 4:00Well, apparently, YouTube does not like the Lone Gum and podcast. I
- 4:08know a lot of my listeners out there listen via YouTube. For whatever reason,
- 4:13I have never understood that how you can listen to a video platform,
- 4:17but they do. Hundreds do, so I thank them for doing so much
- 4:25more. Listen in the traditional way, you know, via your headphones or
- 4:29in your car while you're driving around. Are you doing housework or you're vacuuming
- 4:33up there, you know, up in Canada, whatever the case may be.
- 4:41You know, I spent years and years trying to build up my subscriber
- 4:45base on YouTube, and it just seems so far away, the goal of
- 4:50a thousand subscribers before you can monetize your channel. Then I really wasn't even
- 4:56focused or really didn't care about it. It wasn't until I started getting in
- 5:02the eight hundreds that I decided, you know what, this actually might be
- 5:09possible. So, you know, I pushed and pushed, and I encouraged
- 5:15all of you fine listeners out there to go subscribe on YouTube. You know,
- 5:18something big is coming because I figured, you know, I've been doing
- 5:23this show for nine and a half years now, and I've been doing it
- 5:29this way for nine and a half years and quite frankly, I'm a very
- 5:38creative person and I love a challenge and there is a void to be filled.
- 5:47So time to let the cat out of the bag, folks. At
- 5:56the end of November this year, I was going to take the show live
- 6:01every week on YouTube Video podcast. I would then strip the audio from that
- 6:10podcast and send it out on the audio feed for my podcast listeners that listen
- 6:15via audio only. I just figured, you know, it's time for a
- 6:21change. Try it out if it If it sucks, I'll go back to
- 6:26doing it this way. If it's too much of a pain in the ass
- 6:30or you know, a headache, or you know, who knows, I
- 6:36can always go back. But I figured it's time to try something new,
- 6:40you know, mix it up a little bit. But YouTube have sadly decided
- 6:46to pull the rug out from under my feet just a mere month before I
- 6:50was ready to move forward to do this. So they have decided to demonetize
- 6:58my channel based on violation of their content creator policy. The email I got
- 7:09was very vague, and of course, you know, this is just their
- 7:13electronic AI figuring. For whatever reason, I don't know, if they don't
- 7:20like the name of the show, or if they don't like the subject matter
- 7:25or what the deal is. But the channel itself is still there. I'm
- 7:32not allowed to delete any videos pending an appeal or review, so the channel
- 7:42is still there. It's just not monetized right now. So I will not
- 7:45be uploading any shows to YouTube in the foreseeable future until we hopefully get this
- 7:53thing resolved. The bad news is that could take up to three months to
- 7:59get and that's if it does get resolved favorably. If it doesn't get resolved,
- 8:05and we going to have to pull an audible and see what other options
- 8:09are out there as far as being able to stream live video podcast style.
- 8:16I know there's Rumble, Twitch, Patreon, rock Fin and places like that.
- 8:24So you know, YouTube is not the end all, be all of
- 8:28everything, but that's where I've spent years building up my audience to be receptive
- 8:35to a video podcast, and now, for the time being, those hopes
- 8:43and dreams are dashed. But just know, your boy, We'll be fighting
- 8:46in the background and hopefully we'll have good news on the horizon regarding that.
- 8:54But for now, it's the old traditional way. Yes, that's right,
- 9:01just like missionary sex. You know it is what it is. We're not
- 9:07going to be able to, you know, try any crazy new positions anytime
- 9:11soon, so we're just strictly missionarying it for a while. And it is
- 9:18what it is, so sucks, but we'll get through it and hopefully on
- 9:24the other end come out okay. So today on the show, it's episode
- 9:30number two hundred and fifty four, and I saw my buddy Robbie on Out
- 9:37of the Blank had Jim Gokanauer on his show, and I'd known that he
- 9:43was speaking at at Lancer this year as as I am. I and my
- 9:52buddy Joe, and you know, I know I had heard some things about
- 9:58his allegations, you know, throughout the years, but that's you know,
- 10:05you forget a lot of things. So luckily my uncle Dave, you know,
- 10:09one of my biggest supporters of the show, Uncle Dave out there,
- 10:11and I think he moved, but he might be in New Mexico areas somewhere
- 10:16out in the southwest where it's hot as hell, but it's a dry heat,
- 10:20so it's good for his arthritis. Uncle Dave sent me a couple of
- 10:24links to go through, and we're gonna be looking at some of Jim Cocinaur's
- 10:28allegations from the HSCA era of things. So we're gonna hop in our time
- 10:35machine and go on back to nineteen and seventy seven may to be exact where
- 10:45Jim Cocinaur is interviewed by who is this guy? Howard the hell's his name?
- 10:56Cold? Please? Howard Gilbert? Whoever the hell that is? So,
- 11:09basically, Jim Goggenauer comes forth with some allegations that were told to him
- 11:15by a man by the name of Carver Gayton, Carver Cayton, and Jim
- 11:22Groganer tells the story of meeting Carver Gayton in Seattle, Washington. He believes
- 11:30it was nineteen seventy one, December of seventy one, and then he says,
- 11:33oh, no, in nineteen seventy December of nineteen seventy and at the
- 11:39time he was going to the University of Washington at Seattle. And he says
- 11:45that Gayton, Carver Gayton came over to their place, and he said he
- 11:48was in the area and he didn't live too far from where we were,
- 11:52and he came over and we talked for a while, and he mentioned that
- 11:54he'd happened to have been an ex FBI agent, and he's asked, did
- 12:01he initiate that subject? And Jim says yes. And they said, now,
- 12:07prior to your conversation with Gayton, had you had any connection at all
- 12:11with Kennedy assassination investigation. Cocinauer says, not directly. What had happened prior
- 12:18to that is that I'd been talking with two people. One was a fellow
- 12:22who was involved in the Seattle Secret Service, and I had met him in
- 12:24a sort of an oblique way. And what had happened was that I was
- 12:28trying to get some photographs that had been taken in daily plans at that time,
- 12:33and I was going to make some photo silkscreen decals of them for an
- 12:37art project. And when I tried to locate how I could get hold of
- 12:41the photographs, the UPI said that I'd have to call the Secret Service.
- 12:48And when I called the Secret Service, I got this guy on the line
- 12:50named Elmer Moore, and he started talking with me and he says, well,
- 13:01let's take take mister Moore at the after we finished with the caton and
- 13:05Goanner says, yeah, okay, well I'm saying what he write, Yeah,
- 13:11I just want to know what information you had, so we know that
- 13:13you had something. And Gokanaer says, very very skinty, very little.
- 13:18He knew very little about the assassination at this time. Okay. Now,
- 13:24Gayton mentioned in now did you bring that uhlicit that that he had been a
- 13:28former FBI agent or did he volunteer it? Goganarus says, no, he
- 13:33uh He asked me what I was doing and what my goals and plans were.
- 13:37And after I told him, I said, by the way, what
- 13:39do you do? He said, well, I used to be an FBI
- 13:43agent since he's a black guy, you know. I said, oh,
- 13:46yeah, because I didn't really believe that there were black FBI agents, Okay,
- 13:52and he says, oh, sure I was. And we started talking
- 13:56and we talked about, you know, all the whole situation at that time.
- 14:00Spirou agnew was into this thing, you know, when we were going
- 14:03on about various different subjects, and it finally came around to the fact that
- 14:07he said he was very disturbed by the assassination of Martin Luther King, very
- 14:13very disturbed, he said. By the way, in a curious coincidence,
- 14:16he said, I happen to have been in assigned to the Kansas City Field
- 14:20office. He said he was assigned to that office right after he got out
- 14:26of the FBI academy. Apparently they asked him what year. Of course he
- 14:31doesn't remember. Anyway, he did say that he was talking with a guy
- 14:37by the name of Hosty, right, host the hos t Y right,
- 14:43Jim Hosty, who had been intimately involved with the Oswalds. And he said,
- 14:50well, he let me interrupt you for a second. Gayton was volunteering
- 14:56this information to you, Jim says, right, while I was asking him
- 15:01some questions as it was rolling along. It was a very long conversation,
- 15:05you know, offered some refreshment there, you know, and everything, and
- 15:09we were just sitting there talking about it. Do you recall the address where
- 15:13you were when he had this conversation with you, Yes, one thirty five
- 15:18East Harvard Avenue in Seattle. And your wife is president also, yes,
- 15:24he says, Okay, I understand. Now let me see if my notes
- 15:26are correct. I was told by Dick Sprague that perhaps other researchers had also
- 15:30been president at this time of your conversation with Gayton, and Cocinat says,
- 15:35no, no, no, just my wife and myself, and her sister
- 15:37was there for a little bit. What was her sister's name. You can't
- 15:43make this stuff up, folks. Her name was Tina Tingle. Tina Tingle.
- 15:52How old was she at the time? Seventeen? No, no,
- 15:56I take that back. She would have been sixteen, So sixteen, Tina
- 16:02Tangle. All right, So they asked about her da da da uh So
- 16:14all right? Would you go back in the conversation to the point where Gayton
- 16:15started talking about Oswald's and a Hosty Right, okay, he brought up he
- 16:21says, by the way, he says, I said to him, I
- 16:23said, you know, there's some speculation or words to this effect, and
- 16:27I mean, there's some speculation that Oswald was connected with the government at some
- 16:32point. And he says, oh he was. I says, oh,
- 16:36you know that for a fact. He say, oh, yeah, Hosty
- 16:40told me that he was. What he was was a security a potential security
- 16:47informant. Of course they're talking about Oswald here. Now did he say that
- 16:53Hosty used the term potential security informant? Go Canaler says, yeah, that
- 16:59was the first thing he said, okay, And he said that the problem
- 17:03with Oswald was that he wasn't doing any informing. You mean, he wasn't
- 17:07turning in sufficient information. He wasn't doing anything apparently, all right. He
- 17:14said that Hosty was irritated and he was getting pressure to find out why Oswald
- 17:18wasn't giving information, and that he was running around trying to pressure Oswald into
- 17:26talking with him about it at some length, but of course he gets interrupted.
- 17:34Did he Gayton indicate what type of information Oswald was supposed to be giving
- 17:40the FBI? No, did he indicate at the time whether or not Oswald
- 17:45was to be paid for the information or was he receiving money at the time
- 17:48from the FBI. Jim says, I'm trying to get it straight. I
- 17:52think that he told me that Oswald was being paid, he was being given
- 17:57a certain amount of money, but that Oswald wasn't. I can't remember distinctly.
- 18:02Oswald wasn't showing up at his drops, he wasn't leaving the kind of
- 18:06information at these drops that he was supposed to, and that he just simply
- 18:11was not communicating at all with a bureau. Was there anything in this conversation
- 18:17relating to whether or not Oswald was reporting information about potential assassination of the president.
- 18:22No, Okay, what else was said about Oswald Hosty? Jim says,
- 18:27well, apparently the reason that Hosty had talked with Gayton was the fact
- 18:32that Gayton had bailed him out of a ticklish situation in Kansas City. Apparently
- 18:38Hosty had blown some sort of a cover for some sort of surveillance. And
- 18:44I guess Hosty was being in a punishment situation in Kansas City to begin with,
- 18:48and I guess more black marks against him had been a problem. And
- 18:52apparently Gayton had covered up some indiscretion at a stake at a stakeout of some
- 18:57sort. I really don't remember the details on it. They asked him about
- 19:06the year this was taking place, He doesn't know. But Gaiton was ecstatic
- 19:12about the fact that something was wrong with Oswald and that he was an informer
- 19:17at some level some sort. But he wasn't talking, he wasn't giving information,
- 19:21he wasn't cooperating, And apparently Hosty's mission or one of the things that
- 19:26he had to do was to try to pressure Oswald into giving the information or
- 19:30talking, but he wouldn't do it. Who's a going I felt that it
- 19:40was kind of interesting that he would be talking to me about it. It
- 19:42seemed to me as the conversation was going along, he was getting more and
- 19:45more vented up that Hosty had been wronged somehow by the bureau. In the
- 19:49whole episode. He did say that Hosty had opened his mouth somewhere along the
- 19:56line, and Hoover, I guess they have some sort of an inspection bureau
- 20:00or something within the FBI said, you know that he did a transgression there
- 20:04in handling the whole situation around the assassination situation, so they sent him to
- 20:10Kansas City as part of a punitive punishment. So, yeah, we all
- 20:18know that. Nothing further other than the fact that he closed up the conversation
- 20:26by saying that he was perfectly willing to rent the apartment or actually it was
- 20:30a flat to me on twenty third Street, and then he'd liked to talk
- 20:33about it further and he had had an interesting conversation with us. So about
- 20:38three weeks later they moved in Okay. So apparently, as Carver Gayton had
- 20:42rented Jim Gokanaur an apartment, um they should he should even showed the House
- 20:52Selection Comittee a copy of the lease that he'd hung on too to prove it,
- 20:59and he says. My next contact was probably about three or four weeks
- 21:03later, when he had witted my appetite enough to start him some point blank
- 21:07questions, you know about the fact a while Okay, here you've told me
- 21:11something that's pretty startling. You know, you're saying that, Okay, Oswald
- 21:15was indeed some sort of informant and being paid for it. So talking about
- 21:23school again, I just want to hit the juicy spots, Okay. Basically
- 21:38I went up there to tell him, you know, that I was in
- 21:41and that I really liked the place and everything, and we started talking again.
- 21:45I guess at that point he showed me a picture of Bobby Kennedy with
- 21:49Kennedy's signature on it, and he gave me a description of how people were
- 21:53being prepared to go into shake hands with Hoover and he was among the first
- 21:57group of black agents. I think he graduated in sixty four or something like
- 22:03that out of the academy, and he would give me a description of that,
- 22:06and then I think I had broken in with you know, you were
- 22:08telling me that Oswald was in fact some level of informer for the FBI,
- 22:14And I think at that point I did ask him what he was supposed to
- 22:17have been informing about, and Gayton said, I don't know. He says,
- 22:23I don't really know. All I know is that Jim host he had
- 22:27been trying to pressure or find the guy and pin him down to why he
- 22:32wasn't cooperating. So apparently Oswald had some sort of apartment in some suburb of
- 22:42Dallas. And he says, yeah, okay, And apparently Hosty just went
- 22:47right over there one evening and tried to locate him, and he banged on
- 22:49the door a couple of times and nobody answered. So what he did was
- 22:55he took a note out. Now, Hosty told Gayton this, and Gayton
- 22:57was relating his back to me. Okay, and he said that he wrote
- 23:00a telephone number in Hosty's name on this paper and put the paper under the
- 23:04door. Who did this, Hosty? Yes, Hosty, And he slipped
- 23:10that under Oswald's wife's door. No, the apartment I believe, the one
- 23:15in Irving. Yeah, okay, And I guess the Oswald's never responded to
- 23:19it, all right, And I guess at this point Hosty got pretty angry
- 23:22and was going to what what was Hosty going to do? Folks. He
- 23:30said, Carver Gaton kind of not away from talking about things, and he
- 23:37said he used the word in embarrassing about this whole episode, that it was
- 23:45just a big embarrassment. And he kept saying the word to tell you that
- 23:49Hosty had discussed with him a particular note or threat that Oswald was supposed to
- 23:53have left for the FBI for Hosty. And he says no, And they
- 24:00asked him than anything else come up in conversation, you know, and they
- 24:07just go on and on and on about a lot of other things other than
- 24:17just the assassination. And I think that when it was brought up about Hosty,
- 24:22Gayton sort of tailed away from it some what so to speak. Okay
- 24:29after that, but he did emphasize the point that Hosty was mistreated by the
- 24:33whole episode, and he did emphasize the point that Hosty was very very very
- 24:37very more and clear of the fact that Oswald was some sort of security informant.
- 24:45Did he ever say to you that Hosty had stated or represented that Oswald
- 24:48had been giving information about a proposed assassination. No, No, I never
- 24:52heard any words like that, he says one day, towards the end of
- 24:56the time that we were at Gayton's place, which was about a year later,
- 25:00I went over to his office and I wrote him a letter. He
- 25:03says, I think you should give this information to the congressman, and you
- 25:10know, talking about the HSCA investigation. So apparently he wrote a letter to
- 25:21Gates and hand delivered it to him in the office. I intimated to him
- 25:29that my wife's relatives our friends with Senator Proxmire, and that by some means,
- 25:37you know, that we should really do is tell what he knows,
- 25:40you know, to an official person, you know, some sort. And
- 25:45in it I went over the fact that he had told me things that had
- 25:47to do with Hosty. Okay, the things you referred to me. Yes,
- 25:56So basically this goes on and on. So basically just a nutshow.
- 26:02All that he became tangentially involved with. A former FBI is named Carver Gayton,
- 26:10a black, former black FBI man, one of the first in the
- 26:15nineteen sixties, and he told him he had been stationed with Hosty in Kansas
- 26:19City, and Hosty had told him that Oswald had been in a potential security
- 26:25informant paid by the FBI for information but not giving up any information. So
- 26:30that's interesting. Now, let's take a look at some of the things that
- 26:33Jim Goggenharer said about Secret Service agent Elmer Moore from the same interview. So
- 26:52he turned over all his notes and everything else to the Schweiker Committee, and
- 26:59they were more interested in and elm were more than they were in Gayton Carver
- 27:03Gayton. Now, the interesting thing about the Elmer Moore allegations. All right,
- 27:15can you give me a very brief indication of why what areas that Moore
- 27:19had anything to do with? Jim says, Okay, Moore was a Secret
- 27:25Service agent assigned to the Dallas area on November twenty second, nineteen sixty three.
- 27:30He's the only agent that wasn't there, He said. He was in
- 27:33San Francisco at the time. He was in charge of the interrogation of the
- 27:37doctors. He was in charge of the Secret Service interrogation of Ruby, and
- 27:41he was liaison between the staff of the Warrant Commission and the Secret Service.
- 27:45I think he directly reported to a man by the name of Kelly in the
- 27:49Secret Service, and Moore gave me he said two things that I think are
- 27:55important to me and caused a little bit of a stir when I mentioned them
- 28:00when I was at the thing with Schweiker. When I was I went to
- 28:03Moore's office one time to talk with him, okay, And while I was
- 28:07in there, he got so tape ended. They had to flip the tape
- 28:14and go again. Okay, here we go. Yeah, Well, Moore
- 28:17said something he said to me in effect, he said, well, he
- 28:21said, I still think the little son of a bitch for a friend to
- 28:23Oswald did some shooting that day. And I said, hey, wait a
- 28:27minute, you're telling me that you know he did the shooting. He said,
- 28:32well, he said, all I know is this. He said.
- 28:33You know, he said, we know he met with a subversive the day
- 28:38before the assassination. Did he say that exactly subversive? Jim says no.
- 28:47But when I mentioned it to Schweiker, that Swiker when I was talking with
- 28:49him, he interrupted me and he said, are you sure he didn't say
- 28:52that three days before? And I said no. Moore said that he thought
- 28:57that he saw that he met with this guy a day before the assassination.
- 29:03And as far as I know, I've never heard of any references to Oswald
- 29:07meeting its observed subversive anywhere. So back to more. He's a guy that
- 29:15I had called, okay, when I wanted to get some pictures for an
- 29:18art project and a guy held me on the phone for some time. He
- 29:22kept saying, well, hey, you know I was intimately involved. He
- 29:26took the assumption, okay, that I was some sort of a critic.
- 29:30All right, now he was still with the Secret Service when you called.
- 29:33He still is? Oh, okay, he still is. His name is
- 29:38first name is Elmer Moore. So Elmer Elmer Moore, Okay. Yeah.
- 29:45And when I first talked to him, he was, you know, just
- 29:47completely and totally into the thing that I was trying to write him about the
- 29:49whole Kennedy think. And all I really wanted to do is get information where
- 29:55I can get ahold of a photo. And I called him now and he
- 29:59said, call me, you know, if you have any questions. And
- 30:00so I did over a couple of times, and he says, hey,
- 30:03why don't you come on over to my office one day and we'll sit down
- 30:06and talk about it. And I said fine, So I went over there
- 30:08and I talked to him for about five hours. Where was his office located
- 30:15in Seattle, Washington? Okay, so Elm, We're Moore in sixty three
- 30:18was stationed in Dallas. Now he is at stationed in Seattle. So he
- 30:23goes and talks to him, and they asked him, what did your conversations
- 30:30with him pertain to? Well, basically him venting his anger Kennedy and saying
- 30:36he was a trader. And they said, this is what Elmer Moore said,
- 30:40And they said, yeah, Elman Moore called Kennedy a trader. He
- 30:45prefaced it by saying that no matter how some strange things get here, we've
- 30:51got it better than they do. But he was giving everything away to them,
- 30:53that's what he was saying. Yeah, to the Russians, all right.
- 31:00He says, it's a shame that people have to die, but you
- 31:02know, maybe it was a good thing. A lot of people thought he
- 31:06was a trader, and sometimes I think that too, Jim Gokanaar says,
- 31:11And then he went on to say that I, Well, one of the
- 31:15things that was pretty impressive to me was the fact that while I was talking
- 31:18to him, he said, we had to do what we were told in
- 31:21regards to, you know, the way they were investigating the assassination, or
- 31:25we get our heads cut off. Did he say who told him? Who
- 31:27gave the orders. No, did he explain what he meant by getting his
- 31:33head cut off? No, but he certainly was shaking at the time he
- 31:37was. He went to and fro. He said, Okay, let me
- 31:41explain that. When I talked to him. It was on May seventh,
- 31:45nineteen seventy. I had come over there roughly four thirty or so to stay
- 31:51until about eight o'clock with him, and as the evening wore along, this
- 31:53guy got more and more. In fact, he was scaring me. He
- 31:57was giving you know, his speech, man was getting pretty violent. Okay,
- 32:02what did you think was odd that he was being this candid with you
- 32:05as a complete stranger. Ah, completely, to tell you the truth,
- 32:09if I were to all put it into words, I'm very amazed by the
- 32:14whole series of events. This was at the Secret Service office that you met
- 32:20him in, right, Yes, was anyone else there? No? What
- 32:24else did he have to say about Kennedy? He told me this. He
- 32:28said that he badgered doctor Perry into changing his testimony. He did not feel
- 32:32good about that, him being more, Yes, more talk to Perry,
- 32:38and I guess really related on the poor guy and what respect did he badger
- 32:43Perry? Well, what Perry had seen as he was doing his emergency operation.
- 32:49Apparently, Well, in what way did he indicate to you that he
- 32:53had Perry distort the truth? Well, I think he was trying to get
- 33:00was I think he was trying to say it was him to making a flate
- 33:04flat statement if there was no entry wound in the neck or that where the
- 33:08position of the wound in the back. But Moore was telling me after we
- 33:13talked about that was the fact that his study and his study went into talking
- 33:17with the doctors, is that there was no conclusive evidence where any of the
- 33:22shots had come from at that point. Okay, as the report that he
- 33:25had written up, now this was on the day of the assassination, you
- 33:30mean, Jim says, I don't know when it was. I don't I
- 33:34don't know the date that it was. He showed me a couple of papers
- 33:38and he says he had to come back from San Francisco the day after the
- 33:42assassination, and he went to Washington first. From Washington, he got some
- 33:46marching orders to go down and talk with the doctors at Parkland Hospital, so
- 33:52he didn't get there until the twenty third. Then something like that. I
- 33:54really wish I could remember clearly what he had said on that, but I
- 33:58do know that he went to Washington and then he went to Dallas. He
- 34:02immediately went to talk with the doctors, and he talked to Perry, and
- 34:07apparently he told me that there was one thing that he did during the whole
- 34:09thing that he didn't have a very good feeling about, which was the way
- 34:14he put it, badgering Parry. So I'm trying to think of any more
- 34:22of the good stuff. When everything started to get heated was when I asked
- 34:30him, were you really in San Francisco that day? And he really blew
- 34:35up. He started screaming. He came out of that phrase, I told
- 34:38you we were I did everything. How he put it, I did everything
- 34:43I was told all we all did everything we were told, or we get
- 34:47our heads cut off. You better believe that is the way he put it.
- 34:52Then he went in launched into this whole thing about Kennedy dealing with the
- 34:59wrong way with the Russians, and he felt that, you know, he
- 35:02had been a trader to was there anything else in your conversation with More that
- 35:09related to the assassination or anything that More did? Well, he drove me
- 35:15home. He drove, or he offered to drive me home, which was
- 35:19at that point I was not in such a good shape. I said,
- 35:21okay, drive me home. And as we were driving along, you know,
- 35:24he says, I don't know, maybe Oswald didn't act alone. He
- 35:29says, I guess we'll never know because he's dead. But he says,
- 35:32where was the money? We were trying to find the money, and we
- 35:36couldn't find where the money came from. Now what money is he speaking of.
- 35:42Jim says, well, good question. I didn't follow up on it.
- 35:49And I was, you know, twenty one, twenty two years old.
- 35:52How old was was I? I was about twenty three years old.
- 35:55I wasn't too My mind wasn't working as quick as should have been back then.
- 36:01I should have followed up everything that I talked about. I've gone over
- 36:06this with my head a number of times. But I do remember him saying
- 36:08something to the effect that, well, we couldn't find the money, so
- 36:13we had to leave it alone, or something to that effect. Talk about
- 36:20the money. There was something about a Marina Oswald trust fund. I don't
- 36:25know how that came up, but I remember him saying, well, we
- 36:30knew there was a Marina Oswald trust fund, and then he said something to
- 36:36the effect about, well, we couldn't trace the money. Now Oswald and
- 36:40may have accepted with others or acted with others, and maybe there was a
- 36:45good possibility he did, but he's dead now was the way he put it.
- 36:50I see, So he didn't have any other substantive information. No,
- 36:57then he goes on to ask him about the Schweiker Committee, YadA, YadA,
- 37:00YadA. So yeah, that's basically the extent of their telephone interview with
- 37:14Jim Gokenauer. So after the dust began to settle after the assassination, the
- 37:21FBI knew that the ship was about to hit the fan folks. So at
- 37:30the request of Assistant Director James Gail, a number of questions were set forth
- 37:36from a memo of Special Agent in Charge Gordon Shanklin to the file. And
- 37:44they instructed James P. Hosty Jr. To answer these questions and put them
- 37:52in the file because they knew that they were coming. Okay, now I
- 38:02don't have the questions, but I do have host these answers to these questions.
- 38:09So Number one, the Dallas office did not recommend Oswald for the Security
- 38:15Index during the period that he was in Dallas, because the subject's activities while
- 38:20in Dallas did not appear to fit the criteria for the security index that set
- 38:24forth in the Manual of Instructions. So the question was, it probably was,
- 38:30why wasn't Oswald on the security index? That's the answer Number two.
- 38:37The case on Marina Oswald. That's right. Marina Oswald was opened on a
- 38:44specific recommendation of this writer on July nineteenth, nineteen sixty two, at which
- 38:49time it was noted that she fell within the criteria of the SOBE Program Manual
- 38:55of Instructions one five. By letter to the Bureau dated July twenty five,
- 39:00sixty two, Bureau was advised on a UACB basis that in view of the
- 39:07pending investigation on Lee Harvey Oswald, this case would be put in a pending
- 39:12inactive status to be reopened at a later date for consideration or advisable action.
- 39:19This case was reactivated, and in March of nineteen sixty three, it was
- 39:22determined that the Oswalds had just moved from their apartment on Illsbeth. It was
- 39:29determined that Lee Oswald had been drinking to excess and had been beating his wife
- 39:32on numerous occasions. There have been many complaints from other tenants concerning this.
- 39:39The Oswald's were located at another location on West Neely Street, and a letter
- 39:44was sent to the Bureau advising the status of the case. Upon careful review
- 39:50of the Manual of instructions, it was noted that it would be necessary to
- 39:53utilize a friend or sponsor of Marina Oswald for interpreter, and that the hemisphere
- 40:00of the interview would have to be conducted in such a manner as to not
- 40:04cause any undue emotional stress or strain on the person being interviewed. In other
- 40:08words, they didn't want to piss Marina off while they asked her questions.
- 40:14In view of the reported marital difficulties between the Oswalls, it was decided to
- 40:19wait a suitable period to determine whether the domestic situation had been sufficiently clarified so
- 40:24as to permit a proper interview as desired in section one oh five E of
- 40:29the manual. Upon recontact of the subject in May, it was determined that
- 40:34the subject had moved, leaving no forwarding addresses. Later, when the subject
- 40:42was determined to be in New Orleans, this case was transferred to the New
- 40:49Orleans office. Dallas Office obtained the fording address of Marina Oswald on October twenty
- 40:55eight, sixty three, and on October twenty ninth fight her residence at the
- 41:00two five one five West fifth Street, Irving, Texas address. One of
- 41:07the primary purposes of the interview of Missus Ruth Payne on November first, sixty
- 41:10three was for the purpose of laying the necessary groundwork for an interview of Marina
- 41:15Oswald. However, in view of the allegations concerning Lee Oswald's contact with the
- 41:21Soviet Embassy in Mexico City, it was decided not to conduct this interview until
- 41:25Dallas had been made origin in both cases on Marina Oswald and Lee Harvey Oswald,
- 41:32so that the Dallas Office could be certain that we were in possession of
- 41:36all the facts concerning Marina Oswald and Lee Oswald. Change of origin was not
- 41:42received by the Dallas Office until eleven twenty one sixty three, and not received
- 41:46by this writer until eleven twenty two sixty three. So basically, what hosties
- 41:52saying there is that the Oswalds were seemingly always staying one step ahead of him,
- 42:01that they would catch up to him and realized that they had just moved.
- 42:05They were moving back and forth between Dallas and New Orleans. They were
- 42:07separated. There's allegations of him drinking heavily to excess and beating beating Marina,
- 42:15which we know didn't happen. Oswald didn't drink. So I'm not sure where
- 42:22all this is coming from. And answers to questions three, four and five
- 42:30is the same answer, And that answer is this phase of the investigation was
- 42:34handled solely by former Special Agent John Fame number six. In accordance with SAC
- 42:40Letter six' two four eighty, results of investigations in espionage and nationalistic tendency
- 42:47cases may be recorded in memorandums to the SAC. It should be noted,
- 42:52following the submission of the Dallas letter to Bureau March twenty fifth, sixty three,
- 42:57such a memorandum was placed in the file covering the investigation conducted in Dallas
- 43:01in May of sixty two. Also, setting forth leads to contact relatives and
- 43:07neighbors within the Dallas Fort Worth area. It should be noted that subsequent investigation
- 43:14has determined the subjects left the Dallas area in May of sixty three. In
- 43:19July of sixty three, the New Orleans Office determined that the subjects were residing
- 43:22in the New Orleans division and had and the origin was changed back to New
- 43:28Orleans. After it had been determined that the subjects that left Dallas. The
- 43:31lead to determine Lee Oswald's employment appeared unnecessary as time. It should be noted
- 43:38that the subjects were not active in any subversive organizations at this time and had
- 43:45nothing to arouse any undue interest. The sole purpose of the investigation at this
- 43:50time was to locate an interview Arena Oswald in accordance with the one to five
- 43:54E Manual of Instructions. So Yain, I've been telling you this for many
- 44:00years. The FBI were much more interested in Marina Oswald and what she was
- 44:07doing than Lee Oswald and what he was doing. Number seven. After Marina
- 44:14Oswald moved to the New Orleans office area and cereals furnished to that office,
- 44:19it was left to the discretion of the New Orleans Office how and when Marina
- 44:22should be interviewed. Number eight. On November first, following the interview of
- 44:28Missus Ruthpainne, a teletype was sent requesting a change of office of origin from
- 44:32New Orleans to Dallas. The Dallas Police had previously received information that Oswald had
- 44:38been in contact with the Soviet embassy in Mexico City. For this reason,
- 44:45the Dallas Office was awaiting a change of origin so that the Dallas Office would
- 44:50be in possession of all information before attempting an interview of the subject. It
- 44:54should be noted until such a time as our origin was chased or was changed,
- 45:00the Dallas Office could not be sure that we were in possession of information,
- 45:05and it was felt until such a time this was certain, any interview
- 45:08would be decidedly premature. Number nine. The information that Oswald subscribed to the
- 45:15worker on nine twenty eight, sixty two was received prior to the time this
- 45:20case was assigned to the writer, and it was initial for file when the
- 45:24case was closed. This case was not reopened to the writer until March twenty
- 45:30fifth, nineteen sixty three, at which time this information was reported. Ten.
- 45:37The info concerning the whereabouts of Lee Oswald was obtained in the late afternoon
- 45:40of November one, sixty three, a Friday. This writer did not return
- 45:45to Dallas until after five pm. All security information must go registered mail.
- 45:52There is no registered mail cent out of Dallas after four o'clock on a Friday
- 45:58and before the following Monday. So this airtel was rough drafted on eleven one,
- 46:01sixty three, but could not be mailed until eleven four, sixty three
- 46:08eleven. The Dallas office received the WFL communication ari contact with the Soviet Embassy
- 46:14in DC on eleven twenty two, sixty three twelve. The Dallas office determined
- 46:22on May twenty seventh, sixty three that the subjects had moved. Subsequent investigation
- 46:27reflects that they had actually moved on May eleventh, sixty three to New Orleans
- 46:35thirteen. The information concerning Oswald's contact on four to twenty one sixty three with
- 46:40the Fair Play for Cuba Committee was not received by the Dallas office until July
- 46:44first, nineteen sixty three. The New Orleans office was in receipt of the
- 46:50interrogation sorry. The information concerning Oswald's contact with the Fair Play for Cuban Committee
- 47:05was not received by the Dallas office until July first, sixty three. The
- 47:08New Orleans office was in receipt of information on July fifth, showing contact with
- 47:13the FPCC in New York by letter dated July fifth, nineteen sixty three at
- 47:20the time and the receipt of the information that Oswald had been in contact with
- 47:23the FPCC on four twenty one sixty three, and it was known that Oswald
- 47:30was no longer in Dallas and the primary concern was his location, so a
- 47:35report could be submitted Number fourteen. The information required by the Dallas office concerning
- 47:42the subject's contact with the Soviet Embassy in Mexico City was quite limited. Ins
- 47:46Dallas merely advised that they were in possession of a communicating indicating CIA Mexico City
- 47:53identified an individual possibly identical with Lee Oswald was in contact with the Soviet Embassy
- 48:00in Mexico City. Because of this third agency, this writer was not permitted
- 48:06to actually see the communication. A copy of the CIA communication was forwarded to
- 48:12the Dallas office by Airtel dated ten twenty four sixty three and received ten twenty
- 48:16five sixty three. By Airtel dated ten twenty five sixty three and received ten
- 48:23twenty eight sixty three. The Dallas office was advised with the address on West
- 48:29Fifth Street in Irving, Texas on ten twenty nine. It was determined that
- 48:35this was the residence of Reef Pain and then Marina Oswald was staying there.
- 48:39On October thirtieth and thirty first background investigation was conducted on Reef Pain to determine
- 48:45whether or not it would be feasible to approach her. On November the first,
- 48:52sixty three, Reef Pain was approached and subject Lee Oswald's whereabouts was determined
- 48:55and the New Orleans office had all printed in information. It should be noted
- 49:00that the subject had previously advised agents of the FBI that he would periodically be
- 49:06in contact with the Soviet Embassy in Washington regarding his wife's status. Fifteen.
- 49:14This office furnished USC cont service in Dallas, Texas, no information concerning Lee
- 49:19Harvey Oswald prior to his arrest on eleven, twenty two, sixty three,
- 49:25Number sixteen, and the last one is the Dallas office has been furnishing with
- 49:34the Dallas Police information concerning racial matters and individuals belonging to hate and clan type
- 49:40groups in accordance with Bureau instructions. No information has ever been serviced to the
- 49:47Dallas PDE concerning individuals with subversive backgrounds. So that is what you call an
- 49:55FBI cover your ass scenario. Folks. They know the ship storm is coming,
- 50:05and shit rolls downhill, and it's coming from Washington, and it's headed
- 50:09it's good towards Dallas, and poor James host is at the bottom of the
- 50:15hill, squatted down with the catcher's mitt holding it out, getting ready to
- 50:20try to catch this gigantic ball of shit that has aimed directly at him.
- 50:25Now, if you remember, a couple of months ago, I found and
- 50:29read to you the complete list of FBI punishments and censures and emotions and all
- 50:45that jazz that jaeg Or Hoover doled out to his agents concerning the clusterfuck known
- 50:53as Dallas preassassination. And we know what happened to Hosty. You know,
- 51:04he got I believe he got suspended for a little while and then he was
- 51:10moved. So, after the dust settled, the Warner Report comes out,
- 51:16and on October the fifth, nineteen sixty four, the United States Department of
- 51:22Justice the Federal Bureau of Investigations. On October the fifth, nineteen sixty four,
- 51:28this personal memorandum is sent to mister James Hosty, Junior, Federal Bureau
- 51:34of Investigation, Dallas, Texas. Dear mister Hosty, further consideration has been
- 51:37given to the facts relating to your handling of your duties in connection with an
- 51:44internal security case which was assigned to you in the Dallas Division, and it
- 51:47has been determined that your shortcomings in this matter were most reprehensible. An unwarranted
- 51:54delight, an unwarranted delay occurred on your part in reporting certain important information,
- 52:02and the investigation you conducted in this case was completely inadequate. Like your penis,
- 52:08I added that last part, your failure to conduct an interview of the
- 52:14subject's wife was inexcusable and your judgment with respect to this phase of the investigation
- 52:20was very bad. In addition, it should have been apparent to you,
- 52:23when view of certain information developed, that the subject required a status which would
- 52:30have ensured further investigative attention. Furthermore, during subsequent testimony regarding the case in
- 52:36question, you have made certain statements which were entirely unprofessional and inappropriate. In
- 52:45view of the above, you are being suspended without pay from the close of
- 52:47business October sixth, nineteen sixty four to the close of business November fifth,
- 52:54nineteen sixty four, and placed on probation. Afterwards. It will be necessary
- 53:00for you to carry out your future assignments with greater efficiency and more consideration for
- 53:06the Bureau's interests if you are continue. If you are to continue with the
- 53:12service, the Federal Salary Reformact in nineteen sixty two provides that before a within
- 53:20grade increase can be granted, a determination must be made that the performance of
- 53:24the employee is at an acceptable level of competence. Although you have completed the
- 53:30required waiting period for such a salary increase, it is not possible to make
- 53:37a favorable determination regarding your competence at this time in view of the circumstances set
- 53:44out above. Very truly yours, j Edgar Hoover, PS have fun in
- 53:51Kansas City, ASSHOLEH no I headed the PS. That's quite clearly a ruler
- 54:05smacking finger memorandum there to James Coasty who was suspended for a month without pay
- 54:14and then promptly shipped off to the shithold known as Kansas City, Missouri.
- 54:21And it was there, apparently with Harvard Gayton, that he supposedly learned this
- 54:25information from Pasty, which later got relayed to Jim Cokinauur who is later relating
- 54:32it to the Househole that Committee on Investigations. So it's a lot of he
- 54:37says, she said bullshit. But what can it all be trusted? So
- 54:52apparently, in nineteen seventy five, the Senate Subcommittee on Civil and Constitutional Rights
- 55:09interviewed James Hosty Jr. Okay, this is not the Schweiker Committee, This
- 55:16is not the house of that committee on assassinations. This is the Subcommittee on
- 55:22Civil and Constitutional Rights. Okay. The interview was not conducted under oath,
- 55:31which might be a problem. Both mister Hosty and his attorneys were given an
- 55:37opportunity to read the testimony of James Adams Direct, the Deputy Director Deputy Associate
- 55:45Director of the FBI, before the subcommittee on October twenty first, nineteen seventy
- 55:50five. The interview consisted of a review of mister Hosty's career as an FBI
- 55:54agent, with particular attention to his handling of the Lee Harvey Oswald case and
- 56:00the note delivered to the Dallas Field Office in November of sixty three, wherever
- 56:05relevant questions were asked regarding FBI rules, regulations, and procedures. Mister Hosty
- 56:10has been an FBI agent since nineteen fifty two. He was assigned to the
- 56:15Dallas Field Office in December of fifty three. In nineteen sixty two, he
- 56:21was promoted to the GS thirteen level. In November of nineteen sixty four,
- 56:28he was transferred to the Kansas City office, where he is currently a special
- 56:32agent, still in nineteen seventy five as a GS thirteen level step nine.
- 56:43So this poor bastard, twelve years after the assassination, is still in Kansas
- 56:51City and still is at the same level of promotion. That means no rais
- 56:57of folks, and he's still with the FBI, and they are still bitter
- 57:04about his performance because apparently there's different levels to this shit. Okay, and
- 57:10he's only on step nine. It's taken him twelve years to get to step
- 57:14nine. So either he's a really shitty, horrible FBI agent or you know,
- 57:22they're just screwing this guy because of him fumbling the ball in Dallas,
- 57:28yet keeping him on as an employee, and whether host he's just too stupid
- 57:32to move on get a better job or whatever his deal is, I don't
- 57:38know. He's still staying there, so whatever, I don't quite get it.
- 57:50But okay, so this is a summary of the interview with special agents.
- 57:57So there's no he said, she said thing so they determined his primary
- 58:00duty in Dallas was investigating right wing extremist groups and individuals. He was also
- 58:07responsible for investigating general subversives and counter espionage activities. It was pursuant to this
- 58:13letter functioned that Hosty was assigned in July sixty two to help investigate Lee Harvey
- 58:17Oswald and Marina Oswald, a defector who had recently returned to Dallas Fort Worth
- 58:24with his Russian wife after three years in Russia. The assignment was given to
- 58:30Hosty by his immediate supervisor at the time, special Agent Kenneth Howe. Inquiries
- 58:35had come to the Dallas Field office from Special Agent John Faine of fort Worth
- 58:39regarding Oswald's I INS records. Host To obtained the information from the Ions Service
- 58:46office in Dallas and pastor along Defame. Following routing checks on Oswald, Fame
- 58:52closed his file on late sixty two. Oswald's wife's case was still pending because
- 58:58she had not been personally interviewed. Oswald himself was interviewed by Faye in June
- 59:04nineteen sixty two in the fort Worth office. So Fane did his job,
- 59:10then passed the football to Hosty, who fumbled time after time after time.
- 59:20In late sixty two, Hosty went to interview Oswald's wife, Marina, but
- 59:23decided against it because of apparent domestic troubles. Okay. Finally, in November
- 59:31sixty three, Hosty relocated Oswald in Dallas following a leave from the New Orleans
- 59:36office. Hosty himself had had no personal contact with Oswald prior to November twenty
- 59:43second, nineteen sixty three. He did talk to Missus Oswald on one occasion,
- 59:50and that was on November the first, sixty three, when he went
- 59:52to the house of missus Ruth Payne. He saw Missus Oswald again on November
- 59:59fifth when he went back to the pain home, but did not speak to
- 1:00:01her. Most of his questions on November first, and all of them on
- 1:00:06November fifth were directed to miss Payne, primarily because Missus Oswald cannot speak English
- 1:00:12well, in communicating with her was difficult. Hosty found out that Oswald was
- 1:00:17employed at the School Bok Depository and that he was living in a rooming house
- 1:00:21in the oak Cliffe area of Dallas. Apparently Ruth Payne told him this,
- 1:00:30Missus Paine did not have an exact address. She also told Hosty that Oswald
- 1:00:34had told her that he was a Trotskyite Marxist. Okay, it just goes
- 1:00:44on between trying to go back and forth, back and forth between New Orleans
- 1:00:51and Dallas, and then they go into the note a little bit. What
- 1:00:58exactly did the note say? It was basically not a threatening note, not
- 1:01:05a bomb threat, according to Hosty, who only recalls reading the note once.
- 1:01:13The note was a one page handwritten letter criticizing him for trying to talk
- 1:01:17to Marina and threatening to take action against the FBI if Posty did not stop
- 1:01:22bothering her. Hosty placed a note in his workbox, where it remained as
- 1:01:27far as he knows, until November twenty second, nineteen sixty three. Hosty
- 1:01:32considered it a routine nutletter of the sort that generally would not be retained or
- 1:01:37entered into his file. So, you know, it wasn't anything crazy.
- 1:01:42It was just a hey, you know, leave my wife alone type letter.
- 1:01:51Now, he was called into the office on November twenty third, which
- 1:01:58is the morning after the assassination, and his supervisor how told him that Special
- 1:02:06Agent in charge Shanklin wanted to see them in his office on the twelfth floor,
- 1:02:09So they both went up there. And in substance, Shanklin stated that
- 1:02:14Oswald was dead and there would be no trial. He directed Hosty to quote
- 1:02:19get rid of these, handing him the note and the original and a copy
- 1:02:22of the memo Hosty had prepared at Shanklin's direction two days earlier. Hosty started
- 1:02:30to tear up the documents that Shanklin told him to quote get them out of
- 1:02:32here permanently. Hosty left the earth, left the office, tore up the
- 1:02:37documents and flushed them down the toilet, which is what he calls get them
- 1:02:45out of here permanently, referred to the subject of the note never came up
- 1:02:51again to Hosty's knowledge until July seventy five, when its existence was reported in
- 1:02:57the Dallas Times Harold so interesting stuff there, So Yeah. In November of
- 1:03:15nineteen sixty four, Hosty was given a disciplinary transfer to Kansas City following a
- 1:03:20thirty day suspension without pay, because of his handling of the Oswald investigation prior
- 1:03:24to the assassination. He had previously received a letter of censure for the same
- 1:03:30thing in December of nineteen sixty three. The specific reason for the disciplinary action
- 1:03:35was his failure to interview Marina in his delayed reporting of the fact that the
- 1:03:39Oswalds had moved in the late spring of sixty three. Hosty believes that the
- 1:03:45actions taken against him were not justified by his performance of duty. Moreover,
- 1:03:50mister Hosty believes that he will not be permitted to rise to any supervisory levels
- 1:03:57within the agency because his personnel file indicates that he is not to receive any
- 1:04:01favorable personnel action. The only appeal of this or any other disciplinary action is
- 1:04:09within the agency to explicitly only to the director. If an agent is a
- 1:04:15veteran, and a pew outside the agency may be taken to the Civil Service
- 1:04:18Commission under some circumstances. A number of other agents were censured with varying degrees
- 1:04:25of severity, as a result of their roles in the Oswald investigation. Some
- 1:04:29of those disciplined include Kenneth Howe in the Dallas office, Alan Belmont, then
- 1:04:33in charge of all investigations, and William Sullivan, then in charge of domestic
- 1:04:38intelligence at headquarters. Mister Hostis does not believe that Jay Gordon Shanklin was censured
- 1:04:44for his conduct during this period. Well, actually, James Hosty, he
- 1:04:47was. Everybody was. Everybody in the line of fire was and apparently Hosties
- 1:04:59file was marked for do do and only the director can get him out of
- 1:05:04it. But to bring this all back for full circle with mister Gokinauer and
- 1:05:13his allegations, the House Select Committee on Assassinations managed to track down Carver Gayton
- 1:05:24and in June of nineteen seventy seven I'm sorry, May twenty first, seventy
- 1:05:30seven, they interviewed Carver Gayton at his apartment in Seattle, Washington. He
- 1:05:41is presently terminating his employment with the University of Washington at Seattle, and he
- 1:05:45plans to teach at Florida State in the fall. Gayton was polite but guarded.
- 1:05:55He impressed as a very intelligent man, but one who was not about
- 1:05:59to admit that he heard or said anything derogatory about the FBI. Gayton was
- 1:06:04to be interviewed about alleged conversations that he had with James Hosty in Kansas City
- 1:06:10when they were agents together. An informant, James Gokinauer c. Sipart memo
- 1:06:15and transcript, had stated that while at the University of Washington, he rented
- 1:06:18an apartment from Gayton and they discussed JFK and James Hosty golkan Air stated that
- 1:06:25Gayton had said that Hosty told him that Lee Harvey Oswell was a paid FBI
- 1:06:30informant and that he had failed to make a drop or get information, and
- 1:06:34thereafter Hosty went looking for him. Gayton admitted talking with Gokinauer, but says
- 1:06:40he is somewhat of a flake and was an assassination buff when they met in
- 1:06:45Seattle. Gayton denies telling Gokanauer anything other than that he knew Hosty in Kansas
- 1:06:50City. Gayton denies that Hosty ever told him anything at all about LHO,
- 1:06:56and certainly not that LHO was an FBI and four mormant or agent. Gayton
- 1:07:02gave an AFFI David to the Church Committee. The only thing Hosty told Gayton
- 1:07:06about Lee Harvey Oswall was that the file had been closed and that Hosty had
- 1:07:12reopened it trying to develop some information but had been unsuccessful. So, according
- 1:07:19to Carver Gayton, to how Select Committee investigators Howard Gilbert and Jack Moriarty,
- 1:07:30he did not tell Jim Cokinaur any of this stuff when it comes to Hosty,
- 1:07:45which leads us to believe if Cocanaur wasn't being honest about what Carver Gayton
- 1:07:51told him about hosting and Lee Harvey Oswald should we believe him about the elmer
- 1:07:56More allegations, and that there was something something fishy about Marina Oswald trust fund
- 1:08:08that was set up. You know, we watched Robbie's interview with Jim Cocanou
- 1:08:15and he said the old Moore told him that if you want to get to
- 1:08:18the truth of the case, follow the money. Somebody needs to really do
- 1:08:24some investigating on James Herbert Martin, Marina's agent after the assassination, and into
- 1:08:31Marina and then maybe it would lead them somewhere. Well, we have done,
- 1:08:40in fact just that. So folks, if you haven't yet, but
