- 0:01Speaker 1: Wave.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:13Speaker 2: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:15Speaker 2: get your podcasts. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:19Speaker 2: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:22Speaker 2: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:25Speaker 2: a hater. We're going to talk about what happens next
- 0:29Speaker 2: for LeBron James, but you know, Got to be honest
- 0:32Speaker 2: with you guys, man. I think all of us are
- 0:34Speaker 2: like kind of coming to grips with what the new
- 0:36Speaker 2: world order is about the NBA. And that's what happened
- 0:39Speaker 2: to me. Like I had intentionally taken me a vacation
- 0:43Speaker 2: so that I could come back like now, because in
- 0:46Speaker 2: my mind now is like all free agency would have
- 0:49Speaker 2: got back cracking. You understand what I'm saying? And then
- 0:51Speaker 2: once that happened, boom, we'd have the stuff to talk about.
- 0:54Speaker 2: And I just missed the times that there wasn't nothing
- 0:55Speaker 2: to talk about. But Ryan, no, it's not free agency
- 0:58Speaker 2: season anymore. It's about trade season.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Right. It's like trades, the draft, and like this weird
- 1:04Speaker 3: in-between where the league year ends and starts and people
- 1:07Speaker 3: trying to make all these acquisitions then.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah, like I did not expect it to be all
- 1:12Speaker 2: this action in that time. I never would have left
- 1:15Speaker 2: you under these circumstances if I had realized that that
- 1:19Speaker 2: was what it was going to be. I did not.
- 1:20Speaker 2: But what I really didn't think was that the biggest
- 1:23Speaker 2: topic of conversation coming out of it was going to
- 1:25Speaker 2: be Jalen fucking Brown. Like LeBron James is a free
- 1:28Speaker 2: agent as of this moment.
- 1:29Speaker 4: We got.
- 1:29Speaker 2: other things that we could talk about a little bit
- 1:31Speaker 2: lots of big trades top five player wound up being
- 1:34Speaker 2: traded and I guess Jalen Brown is kind of sort
- 1:36Speaker 2: of caught up in that also but he got the
- 1:39Speaker 2: streets on fire Ryan from what I could tell from
- 1:41Speaker 2: popping in on the internet while I was gone the
- 1:44Speaker 2: the the people were in a frenzy over a dude
- 1:47Speaker 2: that his team apparently could not wait to trade.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Right I mean could not wait to get rid of
- 1:52Speaker 3: and I mean it's not only that he got traded
- 1:55Speaker 3: it's that he is uh discovered that he can livestream
- 2:00Speaker 3: on his own, for better or for worse.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. He done got twitchy.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Right?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Like, he just... This is not a good idea for
- 2:08Speaker 2: most of you guys. It's not a good idea for him.
- 2:10Speaker 2: We'll get into the why it's not a good idea
- 2:12Speaker 2: for him part in a second. But I do want
- 2:14Speaker 2: to start, before we get to the other stuff, because
- 2:15Speaker 2: I don't want to forget this. I do not understand
- 2:17Speaker 2: you Boston Celtics. And look, I understand. I'm not making
- 2:20Speaker 2: any point right now that nobody else has made in
- 2:23Speaker 2: the last 10 days or whatever it is. But I
- 2:25Speaker 2: don't know who the hell, Hugo or the other one was,
- 2:29Speaker 2: that they said that they wouldn't trade in order to get... Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:32Speaker 2: You're not going to trade those dudes to get Giannis?
- 2:36Speaker 2: And then all you get back off this cat is
- 2:38Speaker 2: what's left of Paul George? Like, logically, I don't understand
- 2:44Speaker 2: how you got that far down the line on the
- 2:47Speaker 2: Giannis trade. And don't just go ahead and bring it home. Because,
- 2:50Speaker 2: I mean, look, I would look at Brad Stevens as
- 2:54Speaker 2: a Danny Ains disciple, and therefore you're not going to
- 2:56Speaker 2: settle for a trade unless you get exactly what you
- 2:58Speaker 2: want out of it. But all you wanted, really, for
- 3:01Speaker 2: Jalen Brown was to get Paul George and, like, a
- 3:04Speaker 2: smattering of picks. I do not, I do not understand this.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I do understand the idea though, that once you decided
- 3:12Speaker 2: you're going to put Jalen Brown in all these packages,
- 3:14Speaker 2: then he needs to go ahead and trade them, which
- 3:15Speaker 2: is why you just go ahead and do it for Giannis.
- 3:17Speaker 2: If that's the way you're going to go about it.
- 3:19Speaker 2: But anyway, they did not. Now let's get to the
- 3:23Speaker 2: Jalen Brown of it all, because I have been fascinating
- 3:25Speaker 2: by what I've seen of the surrounding conversation when it
- 3:29Speaker 2: comes to him. Um, And Jalen Brown is a very
- 3:35Speaker 2: interesting type of player, which is a player that I
- 3:40Speaker 2: think that generally speaking, all of us would say was
- 3:44Speaker 2: a good player. And most of us would say is
- 3:48Speaker 2: a very good player. And some people would say is
- 3:53Speaker 2: an excellent player who has a distinct shortage of advanced numbers.
- 4:00Speaker 2: that indicate that those things are true.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Okay?
- 4:06Speaker 2: Now, I think the thing about the analytics discussion that
- 4:10Speaker 2: often gets lost is that, generally speaking, the analytics match
- 4:14Speaker 2: up to what you think.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Like you go look at who the players are that
- 4:19Speaker 2: have the best advanced numbers for seasons and for careers.
- 4:23Speaker 2: And it's the guys that you would expect to have
- 4:25Speaker 2: those numbers.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:27Speaker 2: It's the Michael Jordans. It's Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. It's the Will Chamberlain's.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It's the LeBron James. It's all those guys like there
- 4:33Speaker 2: aren't too many people that pop up on those numbers
- 4:35Speaker 2: and you're like, oh, that's a shock. No, like generally speaking,
- 4:38Speaker 2: they tell the story of what you might expect. But
- 4:42Speaker 2: every now and then, you do wind up with a
- 4:44Speaker 2: player where the advanced numbers do not match up with
- 4:49Speaker 2: generally what we believe about how good those players are.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Kobe Bryant fits this description to a degree, though he's
- 4:57Speaker 2: not an extreme example. Isaiah Thomas is an extreme example.
- 5:03Speaker 2: The advanced numbers do not indicate that Isaiah Thomas is
- 5:05Speaker 2: the Isaiah Thomas that We saw if you want a
- 5:09Speaker 2: guy playing right now that I think also fits under
- 5:12Speaker 2: this heading, that is Anthony Edwards. The advanced numbers are
- 5:15Speaker 2: not saying that he is a bad player, but they
- 5:17Speaker 2: don't speak to him as though he is a superstar,
- 5:20Speaker 2: which I think most of us believe that he is.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Jalen Brown is another guy who fits that description. Now,
- 5:31Speaker 2: here's what Jalen Brown can do for you. Hey, what
- 5:35Speaker 2: can Brown do for you? Anyway, here's what Jalen Brown
- 5:41Speaker 2: can do for you. He can go get you 35.
- 5:45Speaker 2: And this league, to this day, there is no more
- 5:50Speaker 2: valuable skill than being able to go get buckets. It's
- 5:55Speaker 2: a really, really important thing to be able to do.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And Jalen Brown is able to go get buckets.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Go get buckets in the regular season and in the playoffs.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Regular, yes. Yes, and I think the... But.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Here's the thing about that, though. Stick with me for
- 6:09Speaker 2: a second on this, where I think is an important
- 6:11Speaker 2: distinction to make. Where it's really helpful to have a
- 6:17Speaker 2: Jalen Brown is when your number two guy can go
- 6:20Speaker 2: out there and get you 35.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Where your best player, for whatever reason, is only going
- 6:26Speaker 2: to be able to get you 27. Don't worry, I'm
- 6:28Speaker 2: over here. I can get you 35. I can do this, too.
- 6:31Speaker 2: It's the value that Jalen Williams played with the Oklahoma
- 6:34Speaker 2: City Thunder in their championship run, for example. Like James
- 6:38Speaker 2: Worthy is a great example of this in NBA history, right?
- 6:41Speaker 2: If that other guy that you got can go get
- 6:44Speaker 2: you 35 on a night where you need it. Kyrie Irving,
- 6:47Speaker 2: Klay Thompson, right? Even if it's not a, I left
- 6:50Speaker 2: the house today and I'm going to go get 35
- 6:53Speaker 2: type of 35. Just acknowledge that, hey, we got another
- 6:55Speaker 2: guy out here too that could also get you into
- 6:57Speaker 2: high 30s if it comes down to it, right? That
- 6:59Speaker 2: if he's really rolling, we can just say, it's your world,
- 7:01Speaker 2: big baby. You can take it. There's a value in
- 7:04Speaker 2: having that. The thing is, let I just say, it's
- 7:07Speaker 2: really helpful to have that guy as your second best player.
- 7:12Speaker 2: And he's getting paid like not just somebody's best player,
- 7:17Speaker 2: but like the best player in the goddamn league. Like
- 7:20Speaker 2: remember when he signed that contract, it was like the
- 7:22Speaker 2: biggest contract in the history of the NBA. And It
- 7:26Speaker 2: was the kind of contract that you signed guys to
- 7:30Speaker 2: under the paradigm under which that deal was signed, which
- 7:32Speaker 2: is if you are the Boston Celtics and your number
- 7:35Speaker 2: two players deal is up, you pay them. It's also
- 7:39Speaker 2: with an understanding of how the max contract worked, which
- 7:42Speaker 2: is the max contract is a ceiling, which is to
- 7:47Speaker 2: say that it is entirely possible that somebody's value exceeds that, right?
- 7:53Speaker 2: The max contract under that era did not require that
- 7:56Speaker 2: you grade on a curve. And what I mean by
- 7:58Speaker 2: that is when you grade on a curve, one person
- 8:01Speaker 2: gets the A +. Everybody else's grade is slotted based
- 8:04Speaker 2: on that A +. It's not really how it worked there, right?
- 8:08Speaker 2: The max contract thing is A plus is the highest grade.
- 8:10Speaker 2: But hey, we got two guys that get A pluses.
- 8:12Speaker 2: And so you go ahead and throw it out there, okay?
- 8:15Speaker 2: Things are a little different now in the way the
- 8:18Speaker 2: deals are done and the way the CBA is going
- 8:20Speaker 2: to work. And Giving Robin all this money is something
- 8:25Speaker 2: that teams are not going to be able to continue
- 8:27Speaker 2: to do. And not only is it something that teams
- 8:29Speaker 2: are not really going to be able to continue to do,
- 8:32Speaker 2: those who have already given Robin these giant deals, those
- 8:35Speaker 2: are the teams that are going to have to reckon
- 8:37Speaker 2: with what those decisions are. This is a decision that
- 8:40Speaker 2: the New York Knicks are going to have to deal
- 8:41Speaker 2: with with Carl Anthony Towns. He's got that giant salary
- 8:44Speaker 2: that they're going to have to deal with, with him
- 8:46Speaker 2: being their second best player that you can't necessarily count on.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I mean, Carl was great in the postseason, but we
- 8:53Speaker 2: also saw how he ended the postseason. He wasn't great.
- 8:55Speaker 2: He's not necessarily the guy that you can count on
- 8:58Speaker 2: in the same way that Jalen Brown is not necessarily
- 9:02Speaker 2: the guy that you can count on. And when you
- 9:05Speaker 2: ask the question as to why it is that the
- 9:06Speaker 2: Celtics probably needed to make this move, they needed to
- 9:09Speaker 2: get from under that. And I think that there was
- 9:11Speaker 2: a recognition that they needed to. And again, I don't
- 9:14Speaker 2: know why you don't go get Giannis if that's the play.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Or maybe, look, something in their spreadsheet or whatever told
- 9:20Speaker 2: them that the numbers are going to be bad in salary.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I don't know. But there are a million different reasons
- 9:26Speaker 2: to trade Jalen Brown. There are a bunch of them.
- 9:31Speaker 2: What happened, though, and where it got weird, and I
- 9:34Speaker 2: think that this happens often with these guys where the
- 9:36Speaker 2: analytics tell a different story than a lot of our
- 9:39Speaker 2: eye tests tell us, is somebody needs to come out
- 9:42Speaker 2: here and seem really smart about explaining why it is
- 9:46Speaker 2: that a team would trade him, and you wind up
- 9:50Speaker 2: with something like what Bobby Marks reported, that somebody had
- 9:52Speaker 2: told him that they saw Jalen Brown as the seventh
- 9:55Speaker 2: best player on that team. Now, to me, I thought
- 9:57Speaker 2: that was an interesting factoid and not really something worth
- 10:00Speaker 2: being upset about. I thought it was an interesting factoid
- 10:03Speaker 2: in that I bet there are numbers that you could
- 10:06Speaker 2: point to where somebody will say that about him.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Right?
- 10:12Speaker 2: But that doesn't mean he's their seventh best player.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Like I did not receive that or hear that as
- 10:18Speaker 2: the defining outlook as to what kind of player Jalen
- 10:20Speaker 2: Brown was. But you can go look at those numbers
- 10:22Speaker 2: and see how somebody would come to that conclusion. Yeah.
- 10:25Speaker 2: But then once that happened, now it's a whole goddamn battle.
- 10:30Speaker 2: And you know, this battle, we've talked about it in
- 10:32Speaker 2: the past. It's the athletes versus the math elites.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Right?
- 10:40Speaker 2: And team captain for the athletes I saw was my
- 10:43Speaker 2: man David West.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 2: And he was not hearing none of this shit from
- 10:48Speaker 2: the math elites, dog.
- 10:49Speaker 3: No. Even when he was on the Warriors, he was
- 10:52Speaker 3: still taking 17-footers.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But hey, man, if you can make them,
- 10:57Speaker 2: You can make them. The problem with the math elites,
- 10:59Speaker 2: and I think, I don't know how many of these
- 11:00Speaker 2: math elites were actual people, right? But the math elites
- 11:03Speaker 2: get really, really, really defensive, right? The athletes also get really, really,
- 11:10Speaker 2: really defensive. And I'm not saying this about David West,
- 11:13Speaker 2: just to be clear. I want to say this part generally.
- 11:16Speaker 2: I think a lot of the athletes can feel a
- 11:19Speaker 2: little insecure and feel like the math elites are saying
- 11:22Speaker 2: they are smarter than them, which is often happening.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:28Speaker 2: And I think often the math elites don't notice they
- 11:30Speaker 2: doing it because when this happens in athlete versus math elite,
- 11:33Speaker 2: it is very often white people versus black people. And
- 11:36Speaker 2: that's just the way white folks talk to us. All
- 11:39Speaker 2: the goddamn time.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Right.
- 11:41Speaker 2: They don't notice they're being patronized. It's just they just
- 11:45Speaker 2: talk it right now. They talk to their fellow whites
- 11:48Speaker 2: the same way when it comes to these things. But anyway,
- 11:51Speaker 2: on the other side, the math elites have their insecurity
- 11:54Speaker 2: because they dorks. and these other guys aren't, right? It's
- 12:00Speaker 2: the tension that exists in all these spaces and all
- 12:03Speaker 2: the time. It's always there. But in sports, the math
- 12:06Speaker 2: elites took a disproportionate amount of power and decision-making and
- 12:10Speaker 2: everything else, and often at the expense of the experiential
- 12:14Speaker 2: knowledge that is possessed by the athletes, okay? But you
- 12:18Speaker 2: don't even have to be a basketball player to get
- 12:20Speaker 2: to Jalen Brown's, not the Celtics' seventh best player. But
- 12:26Speaker 2: it is fair to ask Is he worth paying $ 50 million?
- 12:31Speaker 3: A third of your salary slot for what is essentially
- 12:35Speaker 3: becoming a hard cap sport. Yes.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Now, on another day, someone can explain to me how
- 12:41Speaker 2: Philadelphia is making this work with Maxie and Embiid already
- 12:45Speaker 2: under that. Embiid's not different. We'll get to that part, right?
- 12:52Speaker 2: But this is me talking. I believe that the numbers,
- 13:00Speaker 2: I don't even want to call them necessarily advanced. I
- 13:02Speaker 2: want to call them, we'll call them, I don't even
- 13:03Speaker 2: know if non-conventional is the right way to put it,
- 13:05Speaker 2: because these numbers aren't necessarily advanced. But the on-off numbers
- 13:08Speaker 2: have come up a lot for Jalen Brown. And I
- 13:11Speaker 2: actually looked at the on-off numbers this morning before we
- 13:14Speaker 2: recorded this, and I think there's a really interesting story
- 13:18Speaker 2: there that's not actually being told for reasons that I
- 13:21Speaker 2: don't quite understand. And for those who don't understand how
- 13:25Speaker 2: on-off numbers work, it's very simple. It's just a matter
- 13:28Speaker 2: of what is the point differential for your team when
- 13:33Speaker 2: you are on the floor? What is the point differential
- 13:36Speaker 2: for your team when you're not on your floor? Is
- 13:39Speaker 2: your team better off when you are on the floor
- 13:42Speaker 2: or off the floor? And for much of Jalen Brown's career,
- 13:46Speaker 2: his teams have been better with him off the floor
- 13:50Speaker 2: than they were with him on the floor. This includes
- 13:54Speaker 2: the 2024 postseason where he won a conference finals MVP
- 13:58Speaker 2: and NBA finals MVP. I want to say something per
- 14:01Speaker 2: 100 possessions. They were 7.5 points worse with him on
- 14:05Speaker 2: the floor than on. And this is when he won
- 14:08Speaker 2: all the stuff.
- 14:10Speaker 4: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 14:11Speaker 2: That's not good. But you know who else doesn't really
- 14:15Speaker 2: have great odd-off numbers or hasn't for the last couple
- 14:18Speaker 2: of full seasons that he's played? Jason Tatum. And that
- 14:22Speaker 2: was not always the case with Jason Tatum. I would
- 14:24Speaker 2: also say that wasn't always the case with Jalen Brown
- 14:27Speaker 2: from looking at the numbers. Something changed when Missoula took over.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I don't have a great answer for what it is.
- 14:33Speaker 2: With Tatum, it gets better once he gets to the postseason,
- 14:36Speaker 2: or it has gotten better in the postseason under Missoula,
- 14:38Speaker 2: but not so much the same way with Jalen Brown. Now,
- 14:41Speaker 2: maybe part of that is Missoula ball got a lot
- 14:43Speaker 2: of try hard in it, and you can do a
- 14:45Speaker 2: lot in the regular season just by trying hard. You
- 14:47Speaker 2: know what I mean? You can get a lot done
- 14:49Speaker 2: trying hard. It don't necessarily work the same way in
- 14:51Speaker 2: the postseason. But I say all that to say that
- 14:54Speaker 2: the on-off stuff It begs more, it gives more questions,
- 14:58Speaker 2: I would say, than answers when it comes to Brown,
- 15:01Speaker 2: because I could say something very similar also about Jason Tatum, right? However,
- 15:09Speaker 2: I don't think those numbers speak to a superstar caliber player.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I just don't. You could say that Jalen Brown, and
- 15:19Speaker 2: it sounds like what a lot of games where Jalen
- 15:21Speaker 2: Brown has been there, that is true. The question is
- 15:24Speaker 2: how much is his contribution to the winning, not just
- 15:27Speaker 2: his contribution to the scoring. My man Tom Haberstroh, I
- 15:31Speaker 2: believe it was him, he wrote something really interesting about
- 15:33Speaker 2: like with numbers involving Brown. But it's one thing to
- 15:37Speaker 2: be a really good offensive player. It's another thing to
- 15:39Speaker 2: be an engine that the offense works off of. And
- 15:42Speaker 2: he's not an engine. He's a guy that can go
- 15:45Speaker 2: get you buckets. He's also a guy that dribbles a
- 15:47Speaker 2: lot even though he can't dribble. And a guy that
- 15:49Speaker 2: gets the ball took from him a lot because he
- 15:51Speaker 2: dribbles a lot even though he can't dribble. You see
- 15:54Speaker 2: what I'm saying? Like, there's a complexity to who this
- 15:58Speaker 2: guy is as a player. But in the end, he's
- 16:01Speaker 2: able to get buckets. And getting buckets is important if
- 16:06Speaker 2: we want to say you're getting buckets is important. Like,
- 16:09Speaker 2: I don't think anybody was saying that Kiki Vandeway was
- 16:11Speaker 2: a top 10 player in the NBA back when Kiki
- 16:13Speaker 2: Vandeway was averaging 30 points a game. For example. You know?
- 16:20Speaker 3: Um.
- 16:20Speaker 2: So, like, to me, Jalen Brown's probably in the top
- 16:23Speaker 2: 20 class of player. By the way, it's really, really
- 16:25Speaker 2: good guys up that high. Do I think he's a
- 16:27Speaker 2: top 10 player? Probably not. Do I think that he's
- 16:30Speaker 2: one of the best two-way players in the NBA? Jalen
- 16:32Speaker 2: Brown is the new Klay Thompson, which is all this
- 16:35Speaker 2: stuff I hear about how good he plays defense, yet
- 16:38Speaker 2: nobody ever wants to put him on an all-defense team.
- 16:41Speaker 2: And I just don't understand how those two things are
- 16:44Speaker 2: the case at the same time. Right? Anyway... I say
- 16:48Speaker 2: all that to say there are reasons that the Celtics
- 16:51Speaker 2: would make a trade involving Jalen Brown that are easy
- 16:56Speaker 2: to understand that don't require going into a hyperbolic space
- 17:05Speaker 2: in discussing him as a player or as a person
- 17:09Speaker 2: because Ryan, apparently while I was gone, did Colin kind
- 17:15Speaker 2: of get like, a little profiled, but it's his own
- 17:18Speaker 2: fault on this one.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Yes. This is the short answer.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Okay. So, so I want you to stay with me here.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Let me know if I'm, let me know if I'm,
- 17:27Speaker 2: if I'm looking at this wrong, because this is the
- 17:29Speaker 2: way that I looked at this. Colin Coward got on
- 17:31Speaker 2: after this trade and said something about talking to a
- 17:33Speaker 2: couple of NBA executives. And they say that Jalen Brown
- 17:36Speaker 2: has the disease of believing that he's the smartest person
- 17:38Speaker 2: in the room. And he went from there to say
- 17:41Speaker 2: that basically he feels like the people he talked to
- 17:44Speaker 2: feel like Jalen Brown doesn't listen to anybody. But his
- 17:47Speaker 2: explanation was, you get money and then dot, dot, dot.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Yes. Right?
- 17:53Speaker 2: Which then quickly became, that's what they say about black people.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Sort of.
- 18:01Speaker 2: I mean, and I am speaking in this conversation as
- 18:04Speaker 2: a person that has many times been accused of being,
- 18:06Speaker 2: of believing that he himself is the smartest person in
- 18:09Speaker 2: the room. Right? Like, I've been in this place and
- 18:13Speaker 2: I understand it. I also say this as somebody who,
- 18:15Speaker 2: Who finds it incredibly frustrating when someone believes themselves to
- 18:18Speaker 2: be the smartest person in the room? And I don't
- 18:20Speaker 2: think they're as smart as me. We're going to keep
- 18:24Speaker 2: all those things together at one time here and get
- 18:26Speaker 2: back to the Colin part.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 18:30Speaker 2: The first time I heard people say that they believe
- 18:32Speaker 2: that Jalen Brown had a problem believing he was the
- 18:34Speaker 2: smartest guy in the room was six years ago coming
- 18:36Speaker 2: out of the bubble. And that was coming from black people. Okay,
- 18:39Speaker 2: that was coming from the player end of things. This
- 18:42Speaker 2: is not the first time anybody has said this about
- 18:45Speaker 2: Jalen Brown. It's not the first time this has been
- 18:47Speaker 2: said about anybody else. This is also something that white
- 18:50Speaker 2: people have to deal with people being frustrated with them
- 18:52Speaker 2: about all the time is the idea of you think
- 18:54Speaker 2: you're the smartest person in the room. And again, there
- 18:57Speaker 2: are two types of circumstances where this happens, which is
- 19:01Speaker 2: when the problem really is that they don't like that
- 19:03Speaker 2: you're the smartest person in the room. And when people
- 19:06Speaker 2: know good and goddamn well that you are not.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Okay.
- 19:08Speaker 2: I would also make the point that Jalen Brown on
- 19:10Speaker 2: his stream, his response to this idea that he thinks
- 19:14Speaker 2: he's the smartest person in the room was to say
- 19:17Speaker 2: the bar is pretty fucking low, which is exactly what
- 19:20Speaker 2: you say when you believe you are the smartest person
- 19:23Speaker 2: in the room.
- 19:24Speaker 3: His defense to people saying everyone thinks he's the smartest
- 19:27Speaker 3: person in the room is, well, everyone else in the
- 19:29Speaker 3: room is pretty dumb. Yes, yes.
- 19:31Speaker 2: But by the way, people don't like... Right. I've said this.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I don't know if you've heard me say this, but
- 19:37Speaker 2: this is the truth. OK, if you exist in a
- 19:40Speaker 2: space where people really, really believe that you're smart, it
- 19:43Speaker 2: behooves you to find a way to make that something
- 19:46Speaker 2: that works for other people.
- 19:48Speaker 4: Right.
- 19:49Speaker 2: It behooves you. to find a way to present that
- 19:51Speaker 2: in a way where people appreciate having access to that
- 19:54Speaker 2: resource as opposed to feeling like you always need to
- 19:59Speaker 2: lord it over them. I was talking to a friend
- 20:02Speaker 2: of mine, Ryan, that you may know, and I was
- 20:04Speaker 2: explaining to him that like, hey man, you're talking about
- 20:08Speaker 2: how His wife doesn't like it if she feels like
- 20:14Speaker 2: he is doing the I'm smarter than you thing.
- 20:17Speaker 3: I know exactly what we're talking about.
- 20:19Speaker 2: And so my thing is, I'm like, hey, man, I
- 20:21Speaker 2: said it to him, just level with him. I was like, hey, brother,
- 20:23Speaker 2: this is what you got to understand. She knows this
- 20:27Speaker 2: and she humbles herself every day before you with this recognition.
- 20:31Speaker 2: You don't know what it's like to have to humble
- 20:33Speaker 2: yourself every day to the idea that somebody else is
- 20:37Speaker 2: smarter than you. I imagine that's not a lot of
- 20:40Speaker 2: fun to do, right? So you got to show deference
- 20:45Speaker 2: to that fact.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Yes, if you're actually smarter than, you know.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, if it really is.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Then it's on you to, you know, help the other
- 20:52Speaker 3: person in this relationship.
- 20:54Speaker 2: It's not an easy position to be in is what
- 20:56Speaker 2: I'm saying, right? And you got to get this. Jayla
- 20:58Speaker 2: Brown's response.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Is.
- 21:01Speaker 3: It's for someone who hasn't learned that fact.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Well, someone hasn't learned that, but also the criticism of
- 21:07Speaker 2: him among a lot of people is that it is
- 21:10Speaker 2: the performance of smart that they don't like. Right. I
- 21:16Speaker 2: saw the internet catch on fire talking about this, this
- 21:20Speaker 2: whole notion of Jalen Brown. And well, you know, I
- 21:25Speaker 2: don't know how smart Jalen Brown is personally. I just
- 21:28Speaker 2: want to make two points. One Kyrie, his OG number two,
- 21:34Speaker 2: He was represented by Donda Sports at a time where
- 21:40Speaker 2: the president of the agency was Antonio Brown. Does that
- 21:48Speaker 2: sound like some smart shit to you? And I remember
- 21:54Speaker 2: when Antonio Brown was the head of Donda Sports, I
- 21:57Speaker 2: did a show with Dominique. We made short content about this.
- 21:59Speaker 2: You can find it. I did a show with Dominique
- 22:01Speaker 2: where I said that to him. And Dominique's first response was,
- 22:04Speaker 2: I don't want to hear nothing about how smart Jalen
- 22:06Speaker 2: Brown is ever again.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Like like off off of that simple detail and right there.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:13Speaker 2: That's that's what we got. When people talk to me
- 22:15Speaker 2: about how smart Jalen Brown is, they always tell me
- 22:19Speaker 2: it's interesting. It's always some proxy. He he did a
- 22:24Speaker 2: lecture at Harvard. Right. He took a master's class when
- 22:29Speaker 2: he was in college. I had somebody talk about how
- 22:31Speaker 2: educated he was and I was like, he went to
- 22:33Speaker 2: college for a year. Again, I'm not saying that he's
- 22:37Speaker 2: not smart. I just haven't seen it myself personally. And
- 22:43Speaker 2: for me, the bar is pretty fucking high for us
- 22:46Speaker 2: to get out here and have this discussion, right? Like
- 22:48Speaker 2: that's where it stands to be. But we didn't have
- 22:50Speaker 2: to go to any of these places. It didn't have
- 22:52Speaker 2: to get to any of this. Keep in mind, somebody
- 22:55Speaker 2: was willing to trade for Kyrie and pay him. And
- 22:58Speaker 2: he's a much bigger pain in the ass, at least
- 23:00Speaker 2: he was, than this guy has been, right?
- 23:04Speaker 1: Um.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I do think for the Celtics, you kind of had
- 23:07Speaker 2: to look up and they said to themselves, this dude
- 23:10Speaker 2: scored 29 points a game, but he used 36% of
- 23:12Speaker 2: the possessions.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Right?
- 23:16Speaker 2: Is that the world that they wanted to live in
- 23:18Speaker 2: going into the future? I don't think they did, right?
- 23:22Speaker 2: I just think that there were a lot of ways
- 23:24Speaker 2: to talk about why Jalen Brown got traded. And internet
- 23:29Speaker 2: broke our brains. It seemed that so many people went
- 23:32Speaker 2: straight to the ones that were going to get people infuriated.
- 23:35Speaker 2: as opposed to the one that used to get people
- 23:37Speaker 2: infuriated back in the day that just don't do the
- 23:39Speaker 2: job no more. He makes $ 50 million! They don't want
- 23:44Speaker 2: to pay that shit! Hey, man. Shout out to the
- 23:54Speaker 2: Lakers and LeBron James who realized there was no need
- 23:58Speaker 2: to make it petty at the end, even though it
- 24:00Speaker 2: is very obvious that they told LeBron that he was
- 24:03Speaker 2: done in that town.
- 24:04Speaker 3: They spent the last eight years making it petty. So
- 24:07Speaker 3: I think, yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean, LeBron came out and said, hey, ladies,
- 24:11Speaker 2: go on about their business. He won't be going back there.
- 24:14Speaker 2: And I'm like, yeah, that's how that went. Yeah, I
- 24:21Speaker 2: believe you, dog. It's not how that went. This is
- 24:24Speaker 2: where I don't have any idea. I don't know what's
- 24:26Speaker 2: a good idea for anybody where you should go any
- 24:29Speaker 2: of this stuff, right? He became very similar to Jalen
- 24:32Speaker 2: Brown in the sense of, hey, man, this ain't no 50...
- 24:35Speaker 2: we don't pay you $ 50 million anymore.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Right. Right.
- 24:38Speaker 2: We used to, but we don't, we don't pay a
- 24:40Speaker 2: guy like you $ 50 million anymore. Um, so what do
- 24:44Speaker 2: we do now? Where does he go? Your agent does
- 24:48Speaker 2: a podcast where he does a flow chart, whatever the fuck,
- 24:52Speaker 2: where he just had all the teams and all the,
- 24:54Speaker 2: that was the wildest thing I've ever seen. I've never,
- 24:57Speaker 2: the idea that your agent would turn this into content
- 25:00Speaker 2: like that.
- 25:01Speaker 3: I am a flip flopping with between, uh, That is
- 25:05Speaker 3: terrible podcasting.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Oh, that was great.
- 25:07Speaker 3: And that is terrific podcasting.
- 25:08Speaker 2: That was great content.
- 25:09Speaker 3: He's up there basically trying to prove the JFK assassination.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's also a thorough explanation of the thought
- 25:17Speaker 2: process of the man who's been the face of the
- 25:20Speaker 2: NBA for the last almost 20 years and where he
- 25:24Speaker 2: would go, like how the decisions are being made. You know,
- 25:28Speaker 2: I think it's weird that Rich gets on there and
- 25:30Speaker 2: talks about so many things. But if there's any place
- 25:32Speaker 2: that Rich Paul has expertise, it's negotiating something for LeBron James.
- 25:36Speaker 3: And LeBron James' thought process and the big decisions.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Now, the only thing about it is, no matter
- 25:44Speaker 2: what Rich Paul say, what has been very clear is
- 25:46Speaker 2: there's one man who makes decisions about what's going to happen.
- 25:49Speaker 2: It is LeBron James.
- 25:50Speaker 3: For sure.
- 25:50Speaker 2: And as far as I can tell, It's been a
- 25:52Speaker 2: long time since LeBron James made a decision about where
- 25:55Speaker 2: to play basketball that was simply a basketball decision. The
- 25:58Speaker 2: one time that he did that, everybody got mad at him.
- 26:01Speaker 2: So everything's been a story after that. He went to
- 26:03Speaker 2: Cleveland because he wanted to bring one home. He went
- 26:05Speaker 2: to L.A. because he wanted to be a movie star, right?
- 26:09Speaker 2: There's no telling what the ultimate driving and deciding factor
- 26:14Speaker 2: will be. I just think it's important to note that
- 26:18Speaker 2: you can't keep betting on things Year 24 health.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 26:26Speaker 2: It's not a wise play. He can't play with so
- 26:31Speaker 2: much defense. I thought he did a good job, obviously,
- 26:35Speaker 2: as the third option or ever was in L.A., and
- 26:37Speaker 2: then when they needed him to step up in the playoffs, obviously,
- 26:40Speaker 2: he did that, and it went well. But I don't...
- 26:47Speaker 2: When they ran Barry Bonds out of baseball, he was
- 26:49Speaker 2: still one of the 10 best hitters in the league.
- 26:52Speaker 2: It just kind of stopped being worth it. I don't...
- 26:57Speaker 2: Are you winning a championship with LeBron James on your team?
- 27:02Speaker 3: I think there is... If he's a... If he takes
- 27:06Speaker 3: the veteran minimum, which it sounds like he's going to
- 27:08Speaker 3: have to, I think that's on the board.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I am so... Yeah, but I'm saying this. Even if
- 27:14Speaker 2: he does.
- 27:17Speaker 2: What is the level of contribution that you need from him?
- 27:20Speaker 2: What is the team or the way that you put
- 27:22Speaker 2: a team around him? How long is it going to
- 27:24Speaker 2: be before teams just start hunting him on defense relentlessly?
- 27:30Speaker 2: Who are we here now? We're here in Miami. We're
- 27:34Speaker 2: here in Golden State.
- 27:35Speaker 3: We're in Cleveland.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Cleveland.
- 27:37Speaker 3: We're in Minnesota.
- 27:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:40Speaker 2: That's... He ain't going to no goddamn Minnesota. Yeah.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that was on the conspiracy whiteboard.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Let us not forget what would be interesting is former
- 27:53Speaker 2: clutch client Anthony Edwards in Minnesota.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't put that one together.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Let me tell you, man, we're going to get to
- 28:00Speaker 2: this a little bit later also, but the idea of
- 28:02Speaker 2: Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, and LeBron James, Minnesota is not.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Minnesota could barely handle Prince Morris and Jerome. At the
- 28:12Speaker 2: same time, I don't know if they can handle all
- 28:15Speaker 2: of this. God damn. That's a chaotic situation.
- 28:18Speaker 3: I mean, you have to remember Kyler's going to be there, too.
- 28:20Speaker 3: That's true. That is true.
- 28:22Speaker 2: But it is crazy, though, that he is good enough
- 28:24Speaker 2: that we actually have to have.
- 28:26Speaker 3: He's the best free agent available. Yeah.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's fair. I just don't know how
- 28:33Speaker 2: we keep doing this. And personally, I'm personally tired of it.
- 28:37Speaker 2: I'm just ready to move on to other stuff. The
- 28:38Speaker 2: other stuff is really dope in the league right now. Right. Like,
- 28:41Speaker 2: like this is, you know, this is, and this is
- 28:43Speaker 2: really interesting. And it's actually a testament to how good
- 28:45Speaker 2: he's been. No matter how long it went with Shaq,
- 28:49Speaker 2: when he showed up to a place that still had
- 28:50Speaker 2: had a press conference, like even when he got to Boston,
- 28:53Speaker 2: by the way, just so people don't get this twisted.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Shaq was unguardable every day that he played in the NBA.
- 28:59Speaker 2: He was still unguardable in Cleveland. And he was still really,
- 29:02Speaker 2: you still had to deal with him in Boston. I
- 29:06Speaker 2: just want to be clear. Shaq was never a bad player,
- 29:11Speaker 2: but he didn't really matter anymore. But you always had
- 29:15Speaker 2: to have the press conference. LeBron is kind of at
- 29:19Speaker 2: the got to have the press conference point, except he's
- 29:22Speaker 2: way better than Shaq was in the last year of Shaq.
- 29:26Speaker 2: And he's like, he's still there. He's still something. And
- 29:29Speaker 2: I just don't care.
- 29:30Speaker 3: It's over.
- 29:31Speaker 2: This is done. This is, we have wrung everything out
- 29:34Speaker 2: of the story that there is. Now that is for me.
- 29:36Speaker 2: If I am him, I'm playing until I don't want
- 29:38Speaker 2: to play anymore. And apparently that will be for every
- 29:42Speaker 2: satchel fucking page. I just cannot believe that he has
- 29:45Speaker 2: not found a single other thing to do with his life.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Golf's getting close.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Well, golf is getting close, but you know, he tried
- 29:53Speaker 2: the production company thing and they don't really do that anymore.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Right?
- 29:57Speaker 2: I guess, I don't know, but I just, I am
- 30:00Speaker 2: It is impressive that he can keep going this long.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Just because you can doesn't mean you should. But if
- 30:09Speaker 2: I were him, probably do the same thing.
- 30:13Speaker 3: Do you think it's on the board? How long do
- 30:16Speaker 3: you think this is going to go on?
- 30:20Speaker 2: It better go on past Wednesday because we got a
- 30:23Speaker 2: recording schedule that does not involve him making any decisions
- 30:26Speaker 2: this week.
- 30:27Speaker 3: I would... Whatever the date is, I'll take the over.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, I mean, he's got a chance to bask
- 30:33Speaker 2: in this.
- 30:35Speaker 3: I think we're going to be closer to Labor Day
- 30:41Speaker 3: than July 4th. Ooh, I didn't think it would be
- 30:45Speaker 3: that long. I think it's more likely like the Roger
- 30:51Speaker 3: Clements path is available to him.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Ooh, I was thinking just, I was just thinking you're
- 30:57Speaker 2: going to do something next week.
- 31:01Speaker 3: I see a, I see a long, long, long content
- 31:08Speaker 3: gap that can be filled by LeBron James. And if
- 31:13Speaker 3: one thing we have learned over again, about 20 years, if,
- 31:16Speaker 3: if there is a content gap, LeBron James can and
- 31:20Speaker 3: will fill that gap.
- 31:21Speaker 2: You are making a great point. After they said, after
- 31:26Speaker 2: Team USA got to go home, it'll just be, you're right,
- 31:29Speaker 2: it's the summer of LeBron from then on. Unless Otani

- 38:19Speaker 3: We know you can't be on top of all the
- 38:20Speaker 3: news and information of the day. No need for the
- 38:23Speaker 3: social media feeds. We got you. Now, if you haven't heard,
- 38:29Speaker 3: All right, Bo, if you haven't heard, brought to you
- 38:30Speaker 3: by FanDuel. There are some other transactions that we missed
- 38:33Speaker 3: out on the last two weeks we're gone. Kawhi Leonard
- 38:37Speaker 3: traded to the Raptors. Giannis traded. To the Heat, John
- 38:40Speaker 3: Morant heading to Portland. What move surprised you the most?
- 38:44Speaker 2: Oh, you left out the one, which is LaMelo ball
- 38:46Speaker 2: going to Minnesota.
- 38:48Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 38:49Speaker 2: I don't know what to make of this. You know,
- 38:52Speaker 2: my buddy Rod, he a LaMelo defender. I don't want
- 38:56Speaker 2: to say apologist because I don't feel like that's fair.
- 38:59Speaker 3: I would use the term anyone defending LaMelo as apologist.
- 39:02Speaker 2: But no, I mean... The people, I mean, I'll be
- 39:05Speaker 2: watching them, right?
- 39:06Speaker 3: Yeah, fair. That's fair. Me neither. That's a good counter.
- 39:09Speaker 2: So, LeBron makes a lot of good points on a
- 39:10Speaker 2: lot of defenses of LaMelo, and he's not a bad
- 39:13Speaker 2: basketball player. He just seems to be such a moron.
- 39:16Speaker 2: And I don't mean that he is one. I don't know,
- 39:18Speaker 2: but he gives moron. Like, he gives it so strong
- 39:22Speaker 2: that we're, like, Anthony Edwards does not give morons. Even
- 39:27Speaker 2: though he had to prove himself, I think, to a
- 39:29Speaker 2: lot of people. But he's not giving you morons. LaMelo
- 39:33Speaker 2: with that stupid shit he be doing when he drives
- 39:35Speaker 2: and everything else, he's just giving that.
- 39:38Speaker 3: And LaMelo's been in our lives now for... 10 years
- 39:42Speaker 3: because of the LeVar Ball year. Yes. So we've known
- 39:46Speaker 3: about him for, we are in like several chapters into
- 39:49Speaker 3: the story.
- 39:50Speaker 2: We are, but I will tell you this, and I
- 39:51Speaker 2: think this part is easy to lose sight of. Man,
- 39:54Speaker 2: that's a big, talented backcourt. Kim and Ant together? Like,
- 40:01Speaker 2: there is a high end of this that could be really,
- 40:03Speaker 2: really excellent. And let's not forget, it's not like LaMelo
- 40:05Speaker 2: Ball has played with a lot of good players. Like,
- 40:08Speaker 2: Anthony Edwards is by far the best dude. that he
- 40:10Speaker 2: will have ever played with. Like Minnesota is going to
- 40:12Speaker 2: miss Nas Reed. It's going to be some things there,
- 40:14Speaker 2: but no, there's a world in which this works and
- 40:19Speaker 2: there is no question. It's going to be hilarious.
- 40:24Speaker 3: Can you imagine the two of them giving a press
- 40:25Speaker 3: conference together?
- 40:27Speaker 2: So that's going to be the other part too. Is
- 40:28Speaker 2: that like, when's the last time LaMelo wasn't the biggest deal?
- 40:33Speaker 3: Also, Anthony Edwards is very good at defending his teammates.
- 40:36Speaker 4: He is.
- 40:36Speaker 3: And he's had a lot of experience because he had
- 40:39Speaker 3: to defend Carl Anthony Jones.
- 40:41Speaker 2: This is a completely different archetype, right? He's gone from
- 40:43Speaker 2: having to do it with Carl and having to do
- 40:45Speaker 2: it with Rudy and having to do it with Eeyore.
- 40:48Speaker 2: And now he's got to do it with someone completely different.
- 40:52Speaker 3: Right. It is going to be interesting to see.
- 40:56Speaker 2: He's got to defend a guy that he's going to
- 40:58Speaker 2: be like, man, just let me talk to you.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Yeah, the problem was he was talking to four people.
- 41:04Speaker 3: That is correct.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Dollar, if you don't shut that shit up.
- 41:08Speaker 3: All right. The Soccer Bowl has been going on the
- 41:11Speaker 3: last few weeks. USA putting on a good performance. They'll
- 41:15Speaker 3: take on Belgium tonight in the round of 16. Big
- 41:17Speaker 3: news that Flo Baligan, who was previously suspended for a
- 41:20Speaker 3: red card, will be playing in this game. Bo, have
- 41:24Speaker 3: you been enjoying the Soccer Bowl so far?
- 41:26Speaker 2: So, first of all, are you familiar with the name
- 41:29Speaker 2: Jack Tunney? This is a decision Jack Tunney would have made.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Shout out to everybody out here who know who Jack
- 41:37Speaker 2: Tunney was. Jack Tunney was the man that they invented
- 41:40Speaker 2: in the 80s as the quote unquote commissioner of the WWF.
- 41:45Speaker 2: And it was time to come up with one of
- 41:46Speaker 2: these contrived decisions. Jack Tunney would decide, oh, we're stripping you.
- 41:51Speaker 2: The number one contender is whatever it is. This is
- 41:54Speaker 2: straight wrestling. Your rules do not allow you to rescind
- 41:57Speaker 2: a red card.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 41:59Speaker 2: It's crazy that you don't have an appeal process, but
- 42:02Speaker 2: your rules just don't let it. And one thing that
- 42:04Speaker 2: the World Cup is always about is home cooking. And
- 42:07Speaker 2: so they're like, wow, this would probably be really bad
- 42:08Speaker 2: for business. And so, boom, there we go. He's going
- 42:12Speaker 2: to play. Let me tell you this about the soccer
- 42:13Speaker 2: ball ride. I watched a lot of soccer ball before
- 42:16Speaker 2: I left for a vacation.
- 42:18Speaker 1: OK.
- 42:20Speaker 2: You know where I went for a vacation. People don't
- 42:22Speaker 2: know where I went for vacation. I went to Italy
- 42:24Speaker 2: for the vacation. I don't know if you guys know this,
- 42:27Speaker 2: but I believe it's been three straight World Cups that
- 42:29Speaker 2: Italy has not qualified for. Ryan, I saw... zero evidence
- 42:38Speaker 2: of any World Cup.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Oh, really?
- 42:40Speaker 3: They're like all sitting out.
- 42:42Speaker 2: I saw nothing. I saw no, not running on no TVs,
- 42:46Speaker 2: not at the airport, not in the hotel, not in
- 42:50Speaker 2: no restaurant. They seem to be boycotting the World Cup
- 42:54Speaker 2: in Italy. It's like it's not happening. I've seen a
- 42:58Speaker 2: lot of wonderful internet discussion about the soccer ball. And
- 43:02Speaker 2: I just want to tell everybody something right fast because
- 43:05Speaker 2: I've seen it, okay? I've seen a lot of y'all
- 43:08Speaker 2: talk about how now y'all want to go to Cape Verde, right?
- 43:12Speaker 2: You've seen the women on the internet from Cape Verde.
- 43:14Speaker 2: You've seen the women in the crowds from Cape Verde.
- 43:17Speaker 2: And you want to book you a vacation to Cape Verde.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Talked to one of my Cape Verdean homeboys and he said,
- 43:24Speaker 2: you'd be better off going to the new Cape Verde
- 43:29Speaker 2: New Bedford, Massachusetts. That's where they at. It is most
- 43:36Speaker 2: likely that that bad little thing that you saw in
- 43:39Speaker 2: the crowd, she caught a flight from Logan. She did
- 43:42Speaker 2: not catch a flight from Kate Faraday in order to
- 43:45Speaker 2: go there. Just letting you know that. But boy, Kate
- 43:49Speaker 2: Faraday had beat Argentina, boy. It would have been cracking.
- 43:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:57Speaker 3: That would have been like... one of the biggest upsets
- 43:59Speaker 3: in sports history.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And look, man, you know,
- 44:02Speaker 2: I generally, or generally, like, I root at the World
- 44:05Speaker 2: Cup according to geopolitics, which is to say, I don't
- 44:09Speaker 2: know who Argentina would have to play in order for
- 44:13Speaker 2: me to root for them. I went to Argentina in April.
- 44:17Speaker 2: I was so surprised that nobody called me no names
- 44:20Speaker 2: to my face. Like, that's... I was bracing for it
- 44:24Speaker 2: the whole time. Like, Argentina... I don't think any country
- 44:28Speaker 2: got a worse rep than Argentina.
- 44:32Speaker 3: Any. For a variety of reasons.
- 44:35Speaker 2: I mean, it's earned, dog.
- 44:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:37Speaker 2: It is earned. But, like, it was my reminder. Everybody
- 44:40Speaker 2: goes somewhere overseas. People are like, yo, what about the racism?
- 44:43Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't know if you know where I'm from, dog.
- 44:46Speaker 2: But it won't be the first time.
- 44:51Speaker 3: All right, speaking of, we had a bit of an
- 44:54Speaker 3: ironic situation during the 25th, 250th celebration of July 4th. Several,
- 45:01Speaker 3: 5,000 Trump supporters got stuck riding out a DC storm
- 45:06Speaker 3: in the Smithsonian African American History Museum. Beau, what did
- 45:11Speaker 3: you make when you saw this?
- 45:12Speaker 2: First of all, I was not alive for the bicentennial.
- 45:16Speaker 2: But you heard about it. Like, it was a really big, $ 2. 51.
- 45:22Speaker 2: we really ain't got no school spirit like we used to, man.
- 45:26Speaker 3: For a variety of reasons.
- 45:27Speaker 2: It was also 150 degrees, at least in this part
- 45:30Speaker 2: of the world. But the idea that they had to
- 45:32Speaker 2: hang out at that museum, for me, is hilarious. And
- 45:36Speaker 2: I'm very curious, man, because the one thing I know
- 45:38Speaker 2: about my people, man, they was going to be willing
- 45:40Speaker 2: to show them folks around. You know? Like, hey, you
- 45:43Speaker 2: got any questions about whatever it is? How wild would
- 45:46Speaker 2: it be if somebody went in there and it was
- 45:47Speaker 2: like a Rocky IV moment? If I can change, anybody
- 45:50Speaker 2: can change. You know, the concert, no, no, no, we're
- 45:54Speaker 2: going to stay in here. We're going to just keep,
- 45:56Speaker 2: you know, tell me more. Hey, man, you go down,
- 45:59Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken, that first flow, it started in 1619,
- 46:04Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken.
- 46:08Speaker 3: It is, yeah, it is not gentle.
- 46:12Speaker 2: In fact, now that I think about it, I'm glad
- 46:14Speaker 2: they ain't tearing that motherfucker up.
- 46:22Speaker 3: All right, Bo, several voicemails as we took a bit
- 46:25Speaker 3: of a hiatus from these. A lot of good ones.
- 46:27Speaker 3: Here's our first.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Hey, Bomani. Long time listener of your shows.
- 46:31Speaker 5: Always appreciated your perspective on sports and non-sports issues. Of
- 46:36Speaker 5: all the non-sports topics you venture off into, my favorite
- 46:39Speaker 5: by far is the city of New Orleans. I'm from
- 46:43Speaker 5: just outside Baltimore, and I've lived in seven states across
- 46:45Speaker 5: the country, and I was stationed in NOLA as a
- 46:48Speaker 5: Marine in fell chase for five years in the mid-2010s.
- 46:53Speaker 5: It is my favorite place in the world for any
- 46:54Speaker 5: number of reasons, and you can guess most of them
- 46:57Speaker 5: reasons have names and accents. I thought it was a
- 47:00Speaker 5: shame that it was not one of the host cities
- 47:02Speaker 5: for the World Cup this year, so I have a
- 47:04Speaker 5: hypothetical for you. If you could pick four countries to
- 47:07Speaker 5: play in New Orleans, which four countries' fans would make
- 47:11Speaker 5: the most entertaining cultural exchanges? This could be for good
- 47:15Speaker 5: reasons or bad. Unrelated, Where are we at on the
- 47:19Speaker 5: name Lester? I'm 41 and the.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Third Lester in a row of white Lesters out of
- 47:24Speaker 1: West Virginia. Thank you for your time.
- 47:26Speaker 5: I appreciate your work.
- 47:30Speaker 2: See the West Virginia part, right? Like once you do that,
- 47:33Speaker 2: anything is possible.
- 47:34Speaker 3: Correct.
- 47:35Speaker 2: Over there they all sound like randy moss right anything's
- 47:39Speaker 2: fine all right so like i feel like we would
- 47:42Speaker 2: have to send um well we have to send france
- 47:45Speaker 2: to new orleans i.
- 47:46Speaker 3: Think you have to send france or one of the
- 47:48Speaker 3: french-speaking african countries like morocco algeria.
- 47:52Speaker 2: I look i tell you this how about we send
- 47:55Speaker 2: because morocco they don't really speak french over there anymore
- 47:58Speaker 2: it's a real hodgepodge but let's see in Cote d'Ivoire
- 48:01Speaker 2: the way everybody be talking about Cape Verde Cote d'Ivoire
- 48:06Speaker 2: this is interesting I don't think I've met an Ivorian
- 48:08Speaker 2: person in my life and every time I watch a
- 48:10Speaker 2: soccer match where they be playing I be like damn
- 48:12Speaker 2: we need to fix that so yeah let's get them
- 48:15Speaker 2: down there let's think about sending the Mexicans.
- 48:21Speaker 3: I mean they'll have a great time.
- 48:23Speaker 2: They'll have a great time Ireland Ireland Yep.
- 48:26Speaker 3: Well, yeah, similar cultures, lots of drunks. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:29Speaker 2: I was going to say, there's going to be somebody
- 48:31Speaker 2: going to be fighting according to this. And do we
- 48:35Speaker 2: send the Japanese?
- 48:36Speaker 3: Yeah, just to really, yeah, really mix it up.
- 48:38Speaker 2: I just want to have some people be like, I
- 48:41Speaker 2: don't understand anything that's going on around me. Like, riddle
- 48:45Speaker 2: me this.
- 48:47Speaker 3: For sure. All right, here's our next one.
- 48:51Speaker 4: Joel Anderson is... maybe the funniest person I have ever
- 48:55Speaker 4: heard make words come out of his mouth hole. He
- 49:00Speaker 4: is the world's greatest hater. There is no second place.
- 49:06Speaker 4: Thank you for introducing the country and the world to
- 49:11Speaker 4: the greatest hater of all time. Haters ball, baby.
- 49:15Speaker 2: I don't know who that is, but he sounds like
- 49:19Speaker 2: up next, Al Jarreau on The Quiet Storm. My favorite thing, too,
- 49:27Speaker 2: is how everything that Joel says that makes everybody laugh
- 49:29Speaker 2: so hard, none of it's jokes.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Correct.
- 49:32Speaker 2: He means every word of those things.
- 49:34Speaker 3: He is the funniest person who never tries to be funny. No, no.
- 49:37Speaker 2: And like, we're lucky that like, he doesn't get mad
- 49:40Speaker 2: at us for laughing.
- 49:41Speaker 3: Correct.
- 49:43Speaker 2: Normally when people are funny, like that unintentionally, it's like
- 49:45Speaker 2: ghost face. Like, was that a joke?
- 49:48Speaker 3: All right. Here's our last one.
- 49:51Speaker 1: What's up? This is Andy from Marietta, Georgia. I just
- 49:56Speaker 1: wanted to call in with a little main story. Uh,
- 50:00Speaker 1: I went to a medical appointment earlier, and I had
- 50:05Speaker 1: a new-to-me doctor, and I saw that her name was Tanisha.
- 50:10Speaker 1: And so I was like, okay, cool. Without thinking about it,
- 50:14Speaker 1: my brain just reads that as that's going to be
- 50:16Speaker 1: a black woman. I've known several Tanishas. And then the
- 50:22Speaker 1: doctor walks in the room, and she is a white woman. And,
- 50:27Speaker 1: you know, I didn't comment on it, but I thought
- 50:30Speaker 1: that this would be, you know, immediately I was like,
- 50:33Speaker 1: this is something for the right time with Belani Jones.
- 50:35Speaker 1: So I thought I would throw that one y'all's way to,
- 50:40Speaker 1: you know, think about. I don't know if anybody else
- 50:45Speaker 1: has called him with a white Tanisha before, but that
- 50:47Speaker 1: does seem like a rare one. So it is a South,
- 50:50Speaker 1: you know, so I think that, as y'all discussed before,
- 50:53Speaker 1: there's some overlap. because that's just how we do down here. But, yeah,
- 50:58Speaker 1: love the show, y'all. I know there's kind of less
- 51:01Speaker 1: going on in the summer on the show, but hope
- 51:04Speaker 1: y'all are taking the time for yourselves, taking care of yourselves.
- 51:08Speaker 1: Thanks for all you do.
- 51:09Speaker 3: Love the show.
- 51:09Speaker 1: Bye.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Is it possible that why Tanisha's name is actually not
- 51:15Speaker 2: Tanisha and this is just a scam she's running to
- 51:18Speaker 2: get business in Atlanta?
- 51:21Speaker 3: If it is, it's a very good move.
- 51:23Speaker 2: I mean, I have to say, before we're thinking, it's
- 51:26Speaker 2: also on the board. Number two, right? You know who
- 51:29Speaker 2: else is from Marietta, Georgia? Jalen Brown.
- 51:34Speaker 3: That's incredible.
- 51:35Speaker 2: Wheeler High School's own. I just want to throw this
- 51:38Speaker 2: out there, by the way, and I'm not saying he
- 51:39Speaker 2: did this for real, but it's just coincidental. Like, you
- 51:44Speaker 2: know how Rick Ross took his whole thing for freeway
- 51:47Speaker 2: Ricky Ross? Just like completely... Jalen Brown did a lot
- 51:52Speaker 2: of Xerox in a Sharif Abdur-Rahim from the same place
- 51:55Speaker 2: they went to the same high school they both went
- 51:57Speaker 2: to Cal they both Muslims you know what I'm saying
