- 0:00SPEAKER_01: In today's episode, we're going to be talking about Ramadan.
- 0:02SPEAKER_01: Ramadan Mubarak, everybody.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: Ramadan Mubarak, Lena.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: You too.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited.
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: So we're basically just going to be answering frequently asked questions about Ramadan, about the month, what the month is used for, but also like some exciting experiences that Muslims have during this month.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: Or not so exciting.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Or not so exciting.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: But anyway, we made it.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Alhamdulillah.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: We made it to another Ramadan.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Alhamdulillah.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: I am so excited.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Ramadan is tough for me, but I'm excited.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: We're going to start right away.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: The most frequently asked questions.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, are you ready?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Oh God.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And these, let's just be concise.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Because you know, we don't want to waste people's time.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: What is Ramadan?
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: What is Ramadan?
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: So Ramadan is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar year.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: It's the holiest month for Muslims.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Um, this month is, it is actually one of the five pillars of Islam.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Fasting Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Uh the great thing about Ramadan and why it's so important is because it's Exactly.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: That was my follow-up question.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Why is it so important?
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: It's so important because honestly, it is a month where you are, for me, and I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna generalize and say for everybody, for me, it is the one month out of the year where you really focus on your worship and on why your worship matters, right?
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: And on what your worship means.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: Um, it is the one month out of the year where you know, a lot of people make it about food, about fasting, then no coffee, then no water, and we all joke.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: But honestly, for me, it's really the one month of the year where my like my oneness with my spirituality is phenomenal.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: That's that's kind of why I feel like it's really important for me.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: It's a reset.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: It's straight up, it is a reset.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: It's where I um, as like a hypersocial person, I'm out and about the entire year.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: It's the one month of the year where I really like step back and take care of my relationship with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: I uh spend time with my family, right?
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean it's it's a it's a time for worship and devotion to God, you know, and like you said, to be smart.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: I uh you give time to God every day.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: At least I do, but I feel like it's the one month of the year where all my time is there.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but the question is I met from a religious perspective.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Why is it important?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: It's because this is the month that Muslims believe that the Holy Quran was revealed.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Was revealed, yeah.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So that that's just Oh, you're going back to basics.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, basics.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Just to just, you know, in case people want to know more.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Um now, what are the rules exactly?
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: What do you mean, rules of like when do we fast?
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Rules of the exactly how long, like what can we do, what we can't do.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Okay, so the rules are you fast from sunup to sundown, right?
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: So from fajr from before fajr until Maghrib.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: And Fajr is the morning player.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, fajr is the morning player.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: But it's technically it's right.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Right before sunrise and then right until sunset.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Um, the rules are no um no water, no food, but those are basics.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, so if you're a smoker, obviously no smoking.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: But I think the second tier of that is like your character, your behaviors, um, or your characteristics, your behavior is also really important.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: So, you know, like no cursing.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: That's that's not good to do with the winger modana.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: And not no bad thoughts, no bad thoughts, and that's try to avoid being mean.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, don't be mean, like, don't gossip.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, just try to be your best self.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: That is the rule always.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Like, that's what I tell my kids.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's to be your best self.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and in terms of fasting from sunrise to sunset, now a lot of people sometimes, not a lot of people, but some people, oh my God, you're fasting for 30 days, not non-stop.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, no.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: It's you break your fast.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: You basically um before sunrise, uh, you get up and you, you know, you can eat something small, you can have water, uh, but it has to be before sunrise.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: And then you break your fast.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: And when you break your fast, you're allowed to have whatever you want.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, upon breaking your fast.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: So no, you're not fasting too much.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And also, one of the other rules is when you're fasting, there are no you cannot have sexual relations with anybody.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, obviously.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: That's the one thing that Lena needed to like, you know, mention.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: I have to look, we're talking about rules.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like they have to know.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Um, why are you hating on me?
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: I'm not.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Next question.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: We're just gonna skip over that.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: That's what we're doing.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Who is exempt?
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: You guys know about Lena.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: That's what she cares about.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Who is exempt from fasting?
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, so exempt from fasting is if you have uh um some sort of medical issue, right?
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Um, small children, pregnant women, if you're on your period, you don't want to be a few.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: If you're traveling.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: If you're traveling, I mean that's why I always say like Islam is pretty freaking cool, right?
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: People think that there's a lot of really hard or yeah, but I I honestly think it's like probably one of the like most um forgiving religions.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: I think I think people like to focus on the negative.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Um, I actually think it's the complete opposite.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Like, there's a lot of reasons.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: I think it's phenomenal.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: For example, like if as a woman, if you have your period, you don't fast.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: You know why?
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Because it's taxing on your body already to be going through that.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it's really amazing when you're there's a lot of mercy.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when you're nursing, you don't have to fast if you're nursing a baby because you need those nutrients to be passed on to your baby.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: So I think it's pretty cool.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, it is.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Now, how do you greet a Muslim?
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: If you're if you want to greet someone during Ramadan, you want to wish them like a Ramadan, like how do you use you can say Ramadan Karim, Ramadan Mubarak, you can say happy Ramadan.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can say and we're good with any of those.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you yeah, you can say anything you like as long as it's positive.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm all for like, you know, inclusivity and diversity.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: And I think it's wonderful when somebody who is not observing wishes me a happy Ramadan, it makes me feel super special.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Okay, awesome.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Is Ramadan like Christmas?
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Uh no, I don't think so.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's um it's very different than Christmas.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: I don't think, I don't know if there's an equivalent, like why I would compare it.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: It's a holiday season, yes.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know if I would equate it to Christmas.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, families get together, people, friends get together, there's like, you know, gathering around the game.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: And honestly, it's if I was gonna be like really, really like simplify this down, yeah, it's it's a holiday season, so you observe and do the same things that you would during Christmas.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: So it's like it in that perspective, right?
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: So this is another thing.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Uh every Ramadan never fails.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: The one person who says to you, not even water.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: That's my favorite.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: No, not even water.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Not even water.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Not even water.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's why we wake up in the middle of the night to drink water.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: It's not the middle of the night.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: This year's actually really great because uh fajr, which is the morning prayer where you stop eating.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: It's really late.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: It's uh yeah, it was like like it was like at 6 6 09 or 6.08 now.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: So it's pretty that's if you're getting up like at 5 30, you're good.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: You're exactly yeah.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Um, do you mind if uh someone who's not observing or who's not Muslim eats or drinks in front of you?
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Absolutely not.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: That doesn't bother me.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it doesn't bother me either.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: You know, the only thing that bothers me though is the smell of coffee.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: I get so sad.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: And that's not that other people are, I just I'm sad for me because like coffee is very important.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: My coffee is very important for me in the morning.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: But uh no, I don't, it does it, like really does not bother me.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: It doesn't bother me.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: And I think uh I've mentioned this before.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Uh for me, like when you're fasting, you're doing it for God, obviously.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: So you're not like, oh, I'm fasting.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: You guys can't even fight.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: It's not like that.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: No, it's not like that.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Like, don't make it hard for other people.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Uh, so a lot of people think that we lose weight.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Do I no girl?
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: That's a mess.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: That you know what?
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: So let me tell you something.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: As a woman, I already have a really hard time losing weight.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, tell me about it.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: My husband, like, can not eat for 35 seconds and lose 15 pounds.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: I, on the other hand, can like not eat for a full month and gain about 12.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: And you lose weight.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but you don't because like by the time you have iftad, it's like all the sweets and desserts and everything, and you're just I just also think like your metabolism gets all like sorts of slowed down or whatever.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: And uh look, it's fine.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: I'm not I'm not gonna blame Ramadan for anything because it's not like I'm losing weight the rest of the year.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: All right, so we're gonna move on to experiences or moments every fasting Muslim experiences.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: I kind of said experiences a lot, but whatever.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's okay.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Um, the fear of bad breath.
- 7:39unknown: Oh my god.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: That is serious.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Like, I worry at my I like when I was so like post-COVID, I don't go to the office as often.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: But when I was in the office before, I was like always carrying toothpaste and a toothbrush with me because I was doing I have in my uh my desk.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Like it and I talk a lot at work, so I couldn't imagine.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Bad breath is a thing.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: You know what the other fear that I have?
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: I have this innate fear always that I'm gonna get a headache, like every day.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, when you like will something into existence and you put it out there, you end up having it.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: So yeah, yeah.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Mind over matter.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Uh when a colleague at work brings food, and then you have to explain that you can't eat.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Okay, but the explaining part, the the food, bringing food to the office is one thing.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: It gets so sad.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: I know, but like then you have to explain, no, I can't eat.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: And then you have to go through this whole thing.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm lucky in the sense that like most of my colleagues like now get it.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Like they know what Ramadan is.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: They know I'm just like, guys, the month of me being at 30% is about to start.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: You being at 30%, that's funny.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: You know, one of my coworkers one time said something to me that I'll never forget.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: He goes, God, I love Ramadan with you.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: He's like, you're just so calm and quiet.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: That's kind of like my husband.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Like the kids and my husband, like the house is quiet the entire day.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: As soon as they eat, it's just like a whole different world.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Actually, no, we're all pretty tired even after we eat, too.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: No, but like the energy comes back a little bit.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we do, but we're gonna be able to get the time.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: For the kids mostly.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: No, not here.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Not here.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Everybody's like, I mean, I literally go pass out on the couch immediately after we eat.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Maybe.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: All right, next one.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Constantly checking the time to see how many hours or minutes are left until it's time to break your fast.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: I actually I don't do that because no, not at all.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know what?
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: I think when we were younger, maybe when we were younger, yeah.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: But like as an adult who has to work a full-time job and then come home and cook, you barely have enough time.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Honestly, when the day was when the like because Ramadan changes, the time changes every year because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, so it shifts by 10 days every single year.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: So when Ramadan was like in the heart of summer, it was actually okay because you worked all day.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Yes, the fasting day was long, but you could come home and like relax and chill before you got up and made something to eat.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: But as the days get shorter, as a working mom or as a working adult or dad, whoever is responsible for dinner or for food, yeah, you kind of just feel like you're constantly running.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: I gotta get home, I gotta do this, and yeah.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: So the next one, forgetting your fasting and taking taking a sip of water or a bite of food by accident.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: You know, that's only happened to me like once in my whole time.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: No, it's not.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: No, I promise.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: It was like literally once in my whole entire life.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: And I think but it's like, oh my god, thank you, God.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like I was meant, I was meant to have a sip of water.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: You know, alhamdulillah.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's always nice though when it happens.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: But like you're like, oh my god, I'm fasting.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Whatever.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Um saying you'll be productive after if thought never happened.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Last year, yeah, I was like, and I tried to do this where we filmed the podcast.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: We did podcast episode and filmed content during it about dawn.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: We're not doing that this year.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: I was just struggling to exist, and poor Lena was doing all the editing and all the every and I don't even know how we did it.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: So this year we're like not we're just gonna take this month to like chill.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Like it's not chill, but like to focus on yeah, and like not worry about it because it's just a lot.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: It's I'm never productive after I've thought.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Um, I think this is also like things you know, younger kids do, like mentally listing all the foods you're gonna eat.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: I still do that though.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: I still do that.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: You know, I get excited like during the day.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: If I see something, I'm like, okay, yeah, inshallah, after I've thought I'm gonna have it.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: The problem is you break your fast and then you feel like you ate a whole side of beef.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: Like you're just full.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, my kids do then like, oh, I want this and I want that, and then like, but like mashallah, they can eat.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Like, especially my different.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: I think they're like, I don't know.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't have that metabolism anymore.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, neither one of us does.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Okay, this is the one dreaded situation.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Getting your period right before iftah.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: That is literally the worst thing that could ever happen ever.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: During Ramadan.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: During Ramadan.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Because honestly, you're there, you're tired, you're fasting all day, you put in all this energy, and like five minutes before the event, before the call for Maghrib prayer, which is like when you're gonna break your fast, boom.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Here's a tip.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Aunt Flo shows up.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Here's a tip.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Just don't go to the bathroom and check.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Wait till after that.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: That is terrible.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying, whatever.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: No, but it's just like the worst thing ever, guys.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: That was a joke, by the way.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: So don't come after it.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, no, it's fine.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: It really, but but in all honesty, it really is like the worst thing ever.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Like I because you're fasting all day, and then now you gotta make up that day later.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: I know that's the other part about Ramadan that's making up the days.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Can we get like I would love to hear in the comments about how people feel about like making it?
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Like what is the best time?
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: Like when not how do you make it?
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: The last possible minute.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: But like when do you make up your days?
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Lena, as she said, last possible.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: I'd rather not, but I'm a procrastinator.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm lucky enough in Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah, last Ramadan, I missed no days.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: Thank God.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: So it's uh it's not to take you guys through my cycle, but yeah.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: It was the best thing ever, not to miss any Ramadan days because you come out of the month, you're like, you feel like I felt like, you know, ta-da ta.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Like I had I was so excited with myself.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's it's a big deal because you don't have to worry about it after.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Um now we're gonna move on to struggles every Muslim deals with during Ramadan.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: So these are a little bit different.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: These are real struggles we we go through.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: The thirst is real.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: I'm just kidding.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: No coffee.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that is really hard.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: That's really hard to do.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: That's really, really hard.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: I I have a really hard time like with sleep, and I really have like the lack of sleep that I get, and then the lack of coffee paired together is really hard.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: It is, and you know, like the caffeine withdrawal headaches.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's it's I mean, usually the first couple of days for that.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Uh waking up late for sahud and not having enough time to eat properly.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: That's kind of sad too.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: No, it's not even that, but not enough time to eat.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: It's really sad when you miss sahur altogether, like that time in the morning before fajr where you're supposed to eat food.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that makes me really sad when I wake up and I'm like, take I miss sahud.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: I know, right?
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, I just want water, that's all.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: I just I'm just really sad in general.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Okay, when the start of Ramadan, adrenaline wears off.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Oh because you're see, you and I we're like opposite.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Like I'm you're good the first two weeks, right?
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm I'm better the last two weeks.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: I feel like my body gets accustomed to it, so it's not as bad.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I'm great the first two weeks.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: The last two weeks, though, I feel like I am barely making it.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Like I'm just crawling along.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: And and it's barely making it like I just feel like all of a sudden it's my my my work, my this.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: If I could take Ramadan off and just focus on like my worship, my Abadah, I would be a happy camper.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna do that one year where I'm just gonna take Ramadan off.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: I'm just gonna use all my network who does that.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, all my patients.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: He takes the whole month off.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, why not?
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I mean, I feel like people, you know, it's that would be hard for me to do because then I just sleep all day.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: No, I don't think I'd sleep all day.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: I'd just be like, no, no, it would be it, it would actually be fine.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: I just wouldn't have the other stresses that really get me there.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: That's true, that's true.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: It's not that honestly, uh guys, it's not the fasting or the salah or any of that stuff that gets me.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: It's the outside life stress that gets me.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: And the lack of sleep when you're working, when you have to work, yeah.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Uh stomach growling all day.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: No, that doesn't bother me.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter, yeah.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, it does remind me that I'm fasting.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Uh not cursing or having mean thoughts about people.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: That is a struggle.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: Not cursing is a struggle for me.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: Not cursing is kind of a struggle.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I have to like adjust the first couple days.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh my god, oh my god.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Like staghfala, stakfala.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Like I've tried not to actually say bad words.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so that is a struggle for me.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: But you don't curse as much as I do.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: No, yeah, so you're good.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: But do you do have mean thoughts about people?
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: No.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: I'm joking, that was a joke.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Uh I do.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, this is a real struggle for me or anyone I think who prepares the food, not knowing what to make for a star the next day.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: So I have a couple of friends who are really great who actually plan out the entire month on a calendar.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: And I like I envy them for that because they're they have the time and then they and the it's like the time and the determination and the willpower to just sit and say, I'm gonna go through and I'm gonna do this.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: And they do a lot of prep, and I have so much respect for that.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: I'm in last minute Lucy.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: And every day I'm like, oh my god, what am I gonna make?
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: What are these people gonna eat?
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Like, I am here, I am at the 11th hour, like the last 20 minutes before, you know, if thought of like rolling my sambusa, getting it ready on the stove.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm like that too for the most part.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I can't, like my life is just it's all over the place.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: I can't.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: I don't have, yeah, I don't have that luxury.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: What's the one thing you like most about Ramadan?
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: Well, I said this early on, which it's the feeling of like this like being really close to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, this oneness with like my spirituality.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: And not that I don't feel that the rest of the year, but I feel like it's like really heightened in the Ramadan.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the focus.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: And the my and the dessert.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: And the dessert?
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, all right.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: And the dessert.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, what are your goals for the Ramadan?
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: My goals for the Ramadan are to do Taraweeh every night.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Those were your goals last year, right?
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: Did you succeed last year?
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Not every night.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, this that's true.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: So you're trying to do it every night.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Every night, yeah.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: So that's my goal for the Ramadan.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: My other goal, honestly, for the S Ramadan is to see how many like azumas I can skip out on.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't want to go to any, I don't want to go to anybody's house.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: I don't want to have anybody over it.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: I just want to like be home and be chill.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: That's surprising coming from you.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: I know, but it's like my one month where, you know, everybody did not like Ramadan during COVID.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: I love Ramadan.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, me too.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: I did too.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Um, for me, my goal, like last year, is to read the Quran from start to finish.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is awesome.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: You did that last year.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: I uh it's two years in a row now.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: So I'm hoping this will be my third year, but it's a big deal for me because my Arabic is.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is amazing.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: I think it's wonderful.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: It's very hard for me.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Like it takes me a while to read it.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: So um that's a big deal for me.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: So if I can do that, like I I'll be proud of myself.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Do you have any goals for the kids?
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: Honestly, to just keep doing what they're doing.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: My older son did a great job.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: He fasted all of Ramadan.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: Okay, mashallah, that's awesome.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's uh it but it's just making sure that he can like work that out with like you know, what he has going on in school, his activities.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, my younger son, who's eight, would just be to do more full days.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: He did a great job last year, and I think he fasted every Saturday in Ramadan.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Oh wow, good for him.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Mashallah.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: And then Sundays he would do like three quarters of the day.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: So the goal is to get all the weekends, um, you know, full days.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: So we'll see.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: For me, I mean, I got them some uh some books uh from this like Muslim bookstore.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and she actually follows us on uh TikTok.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: It's called Crescent Moon Bookstore.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, such good service.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: Like, literally, I ordered it Monday, Wednesday.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: We need to tag her in this episode.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, we'll tag her.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: And um, I got them both like age appropriate books.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, you know, in Ramadan, you guys can read this.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: And then maybe we'll do some trivia.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Like we want to like I want to like do stuff together and like as a family.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Uh so that's that's it.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: And as long as you're paying on time, exactly, you know.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Uh now, this is a bit controversial.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: You ready?
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: I'm ready.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Do you uh are you getting a Ramadan tree?
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Do you agree with getting a Ramadan tree?
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: I think people do whatever it is that they want.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: I'm fine with that.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: I put Ramadan decorations at my house.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: Decorations, yeah.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: But a tree.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Everybody's free to do what they want.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm gonna give my opinion, and you might not like it.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: I don't have to like it.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: We can't free to disagree.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm cool with decorations and everything, and I think it's important you have to do that and also involve your kids and whatever.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Um, but I think it's okay for Muslims to be different.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't understand the need to get a tree.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: That's never like I don't think that's ever been part of the like, I don't know, the decorations.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: But here's the thing you're not even supposed to have Ramadan decorations.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Who said if we're gonna talk about decorations?
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: What are you talking about?
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: That's not true.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: If you have a lantern and bidah, okay, if we're gonna go down, that's not gonna be a good thing.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: Okay, if we're gonna go down that route.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: Having lights is not the same as having a end of the day, having lights is not Islamic.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: Having a tree is not like I I don't know what you deem Islamic and what you don't deem Islam.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying it's not Islamic.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying it's okay to be different.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Why do why do we have to do that?
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: If you want to do a tree and be different, do you boo?
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: Okay, just because trees are put up for Christmas doesn't mean we have to put up trees.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: This is a legitimate conversation.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: It is a crescent shaped tree.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Stop hating.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm sorry.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: It's just a bit much.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: It's okay to be different.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: We don't have to do the same thing as everybody else.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Celebrate your uniqueness.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: No, I love I I I think what for me, I think it's you said something important, which is celebrate your uniqueness.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: You want to be unique and get a crescent shaped tree and make your kids happy?
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: Do you?
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: You don't want to do decorations, do you?
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: You want to do lanterns and lights, do you?
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, clearly, we're gonna say don't get the tree.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: It's just no, don't get the tree.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Get the tree if you want to get the tree.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: Come on.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Get the tree.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: You cannot tell people don't get the tree.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Don't get the tree.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: I can tell people not to get the tree.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: No, no, don't listen to her.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: It's okay.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Do what makes you happy.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: I guess whatever.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Don't get the tree.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: No.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: Stop telling people don't get the tree.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: That makes you sound so close-minded.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: I'm not close-minded.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying, what's the point of it?
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: It makes them happy.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: You don't want the people to be happy.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Skip the tree.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: No, do not skip the tree.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: You're promoting the tree now?
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: I am promoting people's right to choose what they want to do.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, I guess whatever.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: You know, there's a whole other group of people that are gonna say you're crazy and I'm crazy for you for having this discussion.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: No, we're not crazy.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: I think it's a it's a legit.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: I think you if you want to get the tree, get the frickin' tree.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: If you don't want to decorate, don't decorate.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: If you don't want to do anything, don't do anything.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: You want to do everything, do everything.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: This month is I'm just saying.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: She is so close-minded.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: I'm not.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: You are so close-minded.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: I'm not.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: You are telling people don't do something that makes you happy, it makes your kids happy.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: I'm saying it shouldn't be part of the even equation.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: I think you're not okay.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: We can we can agree to disagree.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Don't get the tree.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: No, stop telling people don't get the tree.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's just my opinion.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: Anyway, let's move on.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Because we're not gonna agree on this.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Now, are you watching any of them?
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: I can't move on.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: It's okay, I don't know.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: We're gonna go over this.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: No, we cannot go, we cannot move forward.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: You cannot tell people don't get the tree.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, you know what?
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: We're not moving, we're not recording the rest of this episode.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: One last question.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: I don't care.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: We're not answering it.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: I'm done answering questions until you take back don't get the dream.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Okay, then I guess this episode is finished.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: Thank you guys for joining us for another episode of the podcast.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: This has been fantastic.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Hanet, you're saying I'm closed-minded.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, here you are.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: This is my opinion.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: I'm entitled to it.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, no.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: You're telling people don't get something.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: No, no, take it back.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: That was a joke.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: I'm saying don't get that's my opinion.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: Don't get the tree.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, you take it back.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: No.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: No, my opinion is do what makes you happy.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can do that.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: I can agree with that.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Do what makes you happy.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: I just don't think it's an opinion.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: I don't think they should get the tree.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: It's an opinion.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: No, you cannot have an opinion.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Let them get the tree.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: What people should and shouldn't get to decorate their homes.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: That is not for you to have an opinion on.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, I can have an opinion.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: And my opinion is there is no need for a treat.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: You can say there's no need for a treat.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: But you cannot tell people don't get a treat.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: That was a joke.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: Why are you taking it so seriously?
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: I just I don't like that.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: Damn, girl.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: I did not like that.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, you'll get over it.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: No, I won't.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Um I'm not answering those of these questions.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: I'm done.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: Take back the don't get the tree comment.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: I said that's my opinion.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: We're wasting time here.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Anyway, is this our first on-air fight?
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: I don't really call this a fight.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Are you watching any of the Madan shows?
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: I decided I'm not answering any more questions.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: This interview's over.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: Now I'm gonna get mad for Will.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Like I have a schedule, I have work to do.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, and I'm over here what like that.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna edit all of this shit out.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Are you watching any?
