- 0:00Speaker 1: Some of the content of Patriots Unfiltered may not be
- 0:02Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Listener discretion is advised.
- 0:06Speaker 3: The world's original podcast.
- 0:14Speaker 4: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:20Speaker 1: But are you settling in?
- 0:21Speaker 5: I'm settling in. I'm getting more used to it, yes.
- 0:23Speaker 4: All right.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It's just objectively better for Deuce and I. You sound
- 0:27Speaker 1: like you're getting sick, too. I'm getting sick. I just, like,
- 0:30Speaker 1: I talk too much. I got a little bone to
- 0:32Speaker 1: pick with you, actually, Paul. You have a lot of
- 0:34Speaker 1: bones to pick with.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Uh-oh, uh-oh.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Kind of attacked me a little bit on the post-game
- 0:37Speaker 1: show where I pointed out that I thought it was
- 0:39Speaker 1: a little weird to me that on the hook and ladder,
- 0:41Speaker 1: Chisholm threw it overhand. And you were like, what are
- 0:42Speaker 1: you talking about?
- 0:43Speaker 4: They do that all the time.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Have you ever watched hook and ladder before? Blah, blah, blah. No, no, no.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I didn't say that. Let me finish.
- 0:48Speaker 5: I snapped at you about not knowing if it was
- 0:50Speaker 5: a design play or not.
- 0:51Speaker 4: He's been just fuming for three days.
- 0:53Speaker 1: You know what?
- 0:54Speaker 4: They do throw it over. And I know they do.
- 0:56Speaker 4: You know what?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Perillo.
- 0:57Speaker 5: They got to do something about it. The officiating, I think,
- 0:59Speaker 5: is causing some problems in these games.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Well, if you watch Patriots Unfiltered this week on TV,
- 1:05Speaker 4: I might have a solution for that.
- 1:07Speaker 5: Why don't you just tell me what the solution is?
- 1:09Speaker 1: Idiots. This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:12Speaker 5: Presented by Toyota.com.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Alright, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Wednesday here at
- 1:20Speaker 4: Gillette Stadium, and we're light one person.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah, apparently Evan was sick.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Evan Lazar, I'm not sick, is sick, or at least
- 1:28Speaker 4: he might be.
- 1:29Speaker 1: He's in the process of getting checked.
- 1:30Speaker 4: He's at urgent care right now, getting checked, because his
- 1:34Speaker 4: buddy Barth came down with a case of strep.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know if you can say that. Is
- 1:40Speaker 1: that a HIPAA violation?
- 1:41Speaker 4: Is that a HIPAA?
- 1:41Speaker 2: I'm just kidding.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yeah, so good for Evan getting checked out, being precautious
- 1:45Speaker 1: instead of getting us all infected. He's not sick. He
- 1:47Speaker 1: just talks a lot.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I'm like, you didn't talk at all yesterday. You were
- 1:50Speaker 1: just in your film grind. So hopefully he's okay.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Yeah, so he's getting checked out, getting the test. I'm
- 1:55Speaker 4: surprised between the two of them it's not mono.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I know. Swap and spit.
- 2:01Speaker 4: What?
- 2:02Speaker 1: All right.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Anyway, you like that, Matt?
- 2:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:06Speaker 4: I used that earlier in the department meeting. People said, oh,
- 2:09Speaker 4: you need to give that joke to a bigger audience.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Well, there it is.
- 2:12Speaker 4: There we go.
- 2:12Speaker 1: And that one just gave it to hundreds of thousands
- 2:14Speaker 1: of people. I do feel bad for Bart, though. I mean,
- 2:16Speaker 1: he had to watch an epic Josh Allen performance the
- 2:19Speaker 1: other night, and then he gets sick. I wonder why
- 2:21Speaker 1: he's sick.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Maybe that's why he's sick.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I wonder why he's sick. Tough week for Bart.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Yeah. You don't want to get strep. That's bad, right?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Is that contagious?
- 2:28Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I think so.
- 2:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Have you ever had strep?
- 2:34Speaker 1: You're about to. Of course.
- 2:35Speaker 4: I don't think I've ever had strep.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I think I've had it once, yeah.
- 2:39Speaker 4: I had an adult form of mono. It was called
- 2:42Speaker 4: bar Epstein.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Epstein's bar virus.
- 2:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:45Speaker 1: My brother had that.
- 2:46Speaker 4: And like for like a couple weeks every day, like
- 2:50Speaker 4: in the afternoon, I was feeling really tired at work.
- 2:53Speaker 4: And they were doing all these tests, you know, like
- 2:56Speaker 4: for blood tests. They couldn't figure out what was going on.
- 2:59Speaker 4: You know, you always think the worst. And finally, they
- 3:03Speaker 4: got the Eureka. They figured out that's what it was.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Is that walking mono? Is that something? Am I making
- 3:09Speaker 1: that up? I've heard of something called walking mono.
- 3:11Speaker 4: I haven't heard that.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Maybe I'm not.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Once I got on the right medicine, then I was
- 3:14Speaker 4: good to go. But yeah, like it's... it's debilitating it's
- 3:18Speaker 4: like you feel weak.
- 3:19Speaker 1: And i had mono kept mike off of pp1 yeah
- 3:22Speaker 1: kept me well kept me out of the lineup entirely
- 3:24Speaker 1: paul but if.
- 3:25Speaker 5: You were able to play your sophomore year you would
- 3:27Speaker 5: have been on pp1 i would say at some point
- 3:30Speaker 5: junior senior year you know it was bad set you
- 3:32Speaker 5: back like the like the game i was ready to
- 3:34Speaker 5: come back i wasn't sure if i was going to
- 3:36Speaker 5: get the play you know you're kind of you come
- 3:37Speaker 5: back you're in the fifth sixth defenseman and uh During
- 3:40Speaker 5: the day, my girlfriend made me drive to New Hampshire
- 3:42Speaker 5: because I think she wanted me to buy her a car.
- 3:44Speaker 1: It was not happening. But anyway, long story short, she.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Wanted you to buy her a car?
- 3:48Speaker 1: I'm still curious about that. I'm like, why did we
- 3:51Speaker 1: drive to New Hampshire to look at cars? I'm like,
- 3:53Speaker 1: I'm not buying you a car. Anyway, so we got back.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And I wasn't expecting really to play. And then I'm like,
- 3:58Speaker 1: all right, Deuce, you're in. And I think we played
- 4:00Speaker 1: UMass Boston. And oh, my God, I played so bad. Remember,
- 4:03Speaker 1: I got, like, beat right off the face, like, face
- 4:05Speaker 1: off center ice. Center wins it, kind of dupes around
- 4:08Speaker 1: the little center, and then just right through me, right down,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and scored, and off the ice, so. It was tough.
- 4:12Speaker 1: It was tough. No, not good. I did lose about
- 4:14Speaker 1: 15 pounds, though, so that was positive in college. That
- 4:17Speaker 1: was a positive. Right. Got my beach body back. Thanks, Mono.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Appreciate you.
- 4:26Speaker 4: All right. It's turn-the-page day.
- 4:29Speaker 7: It is.
- 4:29Speaker 4: We're going to talk about the New Jersey Jets and
- 4:32Speaker 4: what kind of challenge this game creates for the Patriots.
- 4:38Speaker 4: It's a division game, so you can never take those lightly.
- 4:42Speaker 4: And I would say between the next two games, this
- 4:45Speaker 4: one and Thursday's game against the Bears, I think this
- 4:47Speaker 4: one is more important to win.
- 4:49Speaker 1: For sure. Yeah.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Don't you think?
- 4:51Speaker 5: I would agree. Division game, more important.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yes. Got to hold serve at home against this Jets
- 4:56Speaker 1: team here in year two.
- 4:58Speaker 4: So we need to head out of Sunday with a
- 5:00Speaker 4: win somehow. So let's talk about the current state of
- 5:04Speaker 4: the Jets. You've got Geno Smith as a quarterback, and
- 5:08Speaker 4: he owns the Patriots.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:10Speaker 8: I know.
- 5:11Speaker 1: So I said on our TV show, like he gives
- 5:13Speaker 1: me that feels like he always comes here with a
- 5:14Speaker 1: new team every fall early in the season and somehow
- 5:17Speaker 1: plays the game of his life. So hopefully that doesn't
- 5:19Speaker 1: happen this week. Yeah.
- 5:20Speaker 5: I mean, even with the Jets, I remember he came in,
- 5:23Speaker 5: I think, on a Thursday night and gave the Jets
- 5:27Speaker 5: a chance to win a game here in Foxborough. So Mike,
- 5:31Speaker 5: Mike's right. He had the last two times that we've
- 5:34Speaker 5: seen Gino Smith. He didn't look like the guy that
- 5:36Speaker 5: everybody else sees.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:37Speaker 5: He looked like a fairly competent passer.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Seattle and the Raiders, right? Yeah. The last two.
- 5:42Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Now in terms of, you know, other players, they've got
- 5:45Speaker 4: some talent, you know, Garrett Wilson's a good quarter, a
- 5:48Speaker 4: good wide receiver.
- 5:49Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Brees Hall is questionable though, right? He's a little bit.
- 5:52Speaker 1: He's missed the last two games. Yeah.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Yeah. And he's, you know, we'll see what happens now.
- 5:57Speaker 5: You get the, the, first practice participation reports come out
- 6:01Speaker 5: on Wednesday. So he and AD Mitchell have both missed
- 6:05Speaker 5: the last few games. I think Mitchell's missed the last three.
- 6:07Speaker 5: I think earlier in the week, Aaron Glenn expressed some
- 6:13Speaker 5: optimism on, on Mitchell. I don't think he's a great player,
- 6:17Speaker 5: but I do think it adds to their sort of
- 6:19Speaker 5: depth of receivers. You know, it's not just Garrett Wilson who,
- 6:25Speaker 5: If Mitchell can play the rookie, Omar Cooper.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Has been on IR.
- 6:29Speaker 5: He's now eligible to return so they could get him
- 6:31Speaker 5: back in the mix. Looks like they're going to probably
- 6:34Speaker 5: be without their, their young talented tight end though. Kenyon Sadiq,
- 6:37Speaker 5: who is in, but he's at least going to start
- 6:40Speaker 5: the week in concussion protocol. So yeah, don't know. Don't
- 6:43Speaker 5: know how that one's looking right now.
- 6:44Speaker 1: All right. Now it looked like the, the Garrett Wilson
- 6:46Speaker 1: show to me last week. I mean, he's really good. Um,
- 6:49Speaker 1: It seems like Gino Smith's ready to throw it to
- 6:51Speaker 1: him anywhere he is. Good week to get Gonzo back. Yeah,
- 6:54Speaker 1: good week to get Gonzo back. I did have a
- 6:57Speaker 1: chance to read Evan's game plan, which a couple things
- 7:00Speaker 1: he pointed out was defensively, really, they want to play
- 7:04Speaker 1: man defense and they want to blitz. So I think
- 7:07Speaker 1: that's two things. If they stick with that, it kind
- 7:09Speaker 1: of feeds into what Drake likes going into last week,
- 7:14Speaker 1: just getting those outside matchups, being able to take shots
- 7:16Speaker 1: down the field. So we'll see if Aaron Glenn... alters
- 7:20Speaker 1: his approach at all, but David Bailey's been off to
- 7:23Speaker 1: a really good start.
- 7:24Speaker 5: I just don't know why you would play predominantly man
- 7:27Speaker 5: against Drake May as a runner. And I would say
- 7:30Speaker 5: the same thing that Fred talked about yesterday when we
- 7:33Speaker 5: were talking about the Monday night game with the Rams
- 7:35Speaker 5: and the Bills. I just don't know why you would
- 7:37Speaker 5: approach Josh Allen that way either. Let these guys pick
- 7:41Speaker 5: up free yards with their legs.
- 7:44Speaker 1: We'll see with A.J. Brown, too. Is he, you know,
- 7:46Speaker 1: any announcement on him today? Mike Rabel said it's possible.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I don't know if that means yes or no, but
- 7:51Speaker 1: we'll see today if A.J. Brown is.
- 7:52Speaker 5: What do you think? I mean, we haven't seen any
- 7:54Speaker 5: practice reports yet. What would your feeling be if he's
- 7:58Speaker 5: going to play Sunday?
- 7:59Speaker 4: I say no.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I say no play Sunday.
- 8:02Speaker 4: He'll be at practice.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I think he'll practice this week. I agree with
- 8:05Speaker 5: Fred and Mike.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't think he'll play Sunday. But I wouldn't
- 8:08Speaker 1: mind getting him against Chicago next week and If he
- 8:12Speaker 1: hasn't played a game, then he's a little fresh for
- 8:14Speaker 1: that game.
- 8:14Speaker 5: Then he gets an extended break after that.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I like that.
- 8:18Speaker 4: I think it's more important that one of the two
- 8:19Speaker 4: quarterbacks plays, if not both.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I can't help but wonder with Carlton Davis if it
- 8:25Speaker 1: did feel like, you know what?
- 8:28Speaker 5: We can get by this week without. Let's get this.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Neck thing a week off of a game and try
- 8:32Speaker 1: to get him a little boosted in his recovery because
- 8:35Speaker 1: he's been dealing with. What is a neck?
- 8:37Speaker 5: I think it's a stinger. I think it's a neck
- 8:40Speaker 5: injury that he kind of aggravated. But yeah, I think
- 8:44Speaker 5: that there's a fair chance that you get both of
- 8:46Speaker 5: those guys back for the game. And I agree with Fred.
- 8:49Speaker 5: With the depth of receivers, I do think if those
- 8:52Speaker 5: guys are all healthy.
- 8:53Speaker 1: And Geno Smith is a competent player, they would have
- 8:59Speaker 1: a chance, I think, to exploit a secondary without those
- 9:02Speaker 1: two guys again.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Their offensive line is pretty good. They have two young
- 9:07Speaker 5: tackles that they're high on with Membu and Fashanu, or Fashanu,
- 9:15Speaker 5: I think.
- 9:15Speaker 4: It is, right?
- 9:15Speaker 1: Fashanu? It's called Fashanu.
- 9:17Speaker 4: I like Fashanu. Olu. Olu.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Fashanu. I don't know. Fashanu.
- 9:24Speaker 4: But going back to their defense, they had eight sacks
- 9:27Speaker 4: last week, but they weren't all, some.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Of them were kind of, No, but they've, you know. Yeah,
- 9:31Speaker 1: at the end of the game. Yeah, I mean, I
- 9:33Speaker 1: think Bailey's a really good one. Well, those are big.
- 9:35Speaker 1: That's how they closed out the game. They were only
- 9:38Speaker 1: up five. I don't think Geno has an interception. I
- 9:41Speaker 1: think they've got two turnovers last week, but three on
- 9:43Speaker 1: the season. Like, they've been playing pretty clean football. You know, it's.
- 9:49Speaker 5: I'm always leery of those. Like, unless it's like, oh,
- 9:52Speaker 5: he's got 18 touchdowns and no interceptions.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I'm not leery of that.
- 9:55Speaker 5: But six touchdowns, no interceptions tells me he's not making
- 9:58Speaker 5: a lot of plays.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. He's not making a lot of plays.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Or Mac Jones' first half of his rookie season. They
- 10:04Speaker 4: didn't let him throw the ball to.
- 10:06Speaker 1: The end zone. I don't know where they're at with Geno.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I think with him, what we've seen over the past
- 10:12Speaker 1: few years is he starts good and then starts to
- 10:15Speaker 1: tail off and not be so great. Hopefully they can
- 10:18Speaker 1: you know, encourage that. But it's just generally where the
- 10:21Speaker 1: teams are right now. The Patriots seem like they're a
- 10:23Speaker 1: contender and they are trying to ascend to the playoffs
- 10:26Speaker 1: and the Jets are a step behind in their rebuild
- 10:28Speaker 1: and trying to, you know, find a quarterback. I think
- 10:30Speaker 1: their whole next draft is to find one of those
- 10:32Speaker 1: guys that are coming out. But I think they've added
- 10:35Speaker 1: some talent around them. I mean, really, I think they've
- 10:37Speaker 1: done a nice job with the other stuff. I agree, Mike,
- 10:39Speaker 1: but it's like, how do they hold? And it's the
- 10:41Speaker 1: same thing with the Patriots and their free agents on defense.
- 10:43Speaker 1: It's like, can Minka Fitzpatrick and those guys hold on
- 10:47Speaker 1: long enough to get a quarterback so then it all
- 10:51Speaker 1: comes together at once.
- 10:52Speaker 5: But they should be able to hold on long enough
- 10:54Speaker 5: so that the guys that you're drafting can replace them
- 10:56Speaker 5: when they're ready as opposed to when they have to play.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Like David Bailey, number two overall pick, he's going to play.
- 11:02Speaker 5: But in an ideal world, maybe a third round pick
- 11:06Speaker 5: or a fourth round pick that we're not overly familiar
- 11:08Speaker 5: with right now is your starter next year or the
- 11:11Speaker 5: year after, something like that. And you have those kinds
- 11:14Speaker 5: of guys. I know that, and I didn't bring my
- 11:16Speaker 5: depth chart, so I don't have the names in front
- 11:19Speaker 5: of me, but they have some young corners that, have
- 11:22Speaker 5: been up and down, but seem to be on the rise.
- 11:25Speaker 5: I was reading a little of Ben Solak yesterday, you know,
- 11:29Speaker 5: talking about how he's a little bit higher on the
- 11:32Speaker 5: Jets in general, and he thinks there's a chance.
- 11:35Speaker 1: The Jets could be in wildcard contention.
- 11:38Speaker 5: That's the one, I think.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yeah, and Brandon Stevens.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Brandon Stevens is a former Raven.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I know who that is.
- 11:44Speaker 5: The other one is the one I think Solak was
- 11:47Speaker 5: high on.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:49Speaker 7: So.
- 11:50Speaker 5: I do like some of the things that they've done.
- 11:52Speaker 5: It won't matter if they don't figure out the quarterback position.
- 11:55Speaker 5: And the first month and a half here with the
- 11:57Speaker 5: college season has not been good news for teams like
- 12:00Speaker 5: the Jets. You know, there's all these quarterbacks that are
- 12:03Speaker 5: in this draft, and none of them are really separated.
- 12:06Speaker 5: You know, they're all good, but I don't see a
- 12:10Speaker 5: really good one in the mix. A lot of people
- 12:12Speaker 5: are talking about the kid that transferred to Oklahoma State, Mestermaker,
- 12:17Speaker 5: is being– He's thoroughly average. I've seen him play a
- 12:20Speaker 5: handful of times. He's good, but I don't think he's
- 12:23Speaker 5: anything special.
- 12:25Speaker 4: I like what I saw out of the North Carolina kid.
- 12:28Speaker 4: He looks like he could be a good quarterback.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Oh, this year? Okay. I thought you were talking about
- 12:36Speaker 1: Drake May.
- 12:37Speaker 4: I don't.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Did you see the game?
- 12:38Speaker 5: I've seen them play. I've seen North Carolina play. They
- 12:40Speaker 5: look like they have no offense.
- 12:43Speaker 4: This kid looked good. He looked good.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I haven't seen him. Watch a little UCLA, though.
- 12:48Speaker 4: They're streaking.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Bob Chesney's all over the place.
- 12:50Speaker 5: I've been rooting for your boy.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Only because he was a fan of us.
- 12:53Speaker 7: Right.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Well, he's having a moment on social media. I don't
- 12:55Speaker 1: know if you saw it. It's like pregame speech before
- 12:58Speaker 1: going into Oregon and, you know, burning the boats and
- 13:00Speaker 1: yelling at the guys. And one of the players from
- 13:03Speaker 1: Holy Cross that went to the pros, shoot, I'm going
- 13:05Speaker 1: to forget his name. He's a lineman that plays with
- 13:08Speaker 1: the Chiefs. Hanson, C.J. Hanson. And he was just saying,
- 13:11Speaker 1: you know, what a motivator he is. I mean, everywhere
- 13:13Speaker 1: he's gone, this guy has won. So it's Really cool
- 13:15Speaker 1: just to see the whole country wake up to him,
- 13:18Speaker 1: and now UCLA fans are terrified that he's going to
- 13:20Speaker 1: leave and be one and done and go to keep
- 13:22Speaker 1: moving up the chain. But it's a pretty good situation,
- 13:25Speaker 1: I think, at UCLA. Just lost his quarterback, though. That's
- 13:28Speaker 1: a tough one.
- 13:29Speaker 5: Yeah, that was a cheap shot, too. That was a
- 13:32Speaker 5: good win at Oregon for them. See if they can
- 13:35Speaker 5: keep it going. But with the Jets, Freddie... They're going
- 13:39Speaker 5: to have all those picks. I think they have three
- 13:41Speaker 5: more first-round picks, right?
- 13:42Speaker 1: Yeah. It's never been a talent problem with them, really,
- 13:45Speaker 1: has it? Because it's not like they miss on the picks,
- 13:48Speaker 1: but they can't get the quarterback.
- 13:50Speaker 5: And this is my whole argument that I push back on.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Fred brought this up.
- 13:54Speaker 5: I think you brought it up yesterday when we were
- 13:55Speaker 5: talking about the Marvin Harrison thing, how there were a
- 13:57Speaker 5: lot of people, well, you've got to build the team first.
- 14:00Speaker 5: I've seen a million teams do it that way and
- 14:03Speaker 5: fail just as often as I've seen the teams that
- 14:05Speaker 5: take the quarterback first. And the guy doesn't pan out.
- 14:08Speaker 5: And that fails, too. You got to get them both.
- 14:10Speaker 4: I've always said if you have the chance to get
- 14:13Speaker 4: your quarterback or your head coach, get it.
- 14:15Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Just go get it. Doesn't matter anything else going on.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Those are the two toughest things to get right.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:23Speaker 4: And so get them. when you have the chance and
- 14:25Speaker 4: then figure out the rest later.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I mean, how many, you know, I know Patriots fans
- 14:29Speaker 1: love to go back and look at those 20 years and,
- 14:31Speaker 1: you know, point out players that got away. And it's
- 14:33Speaker 1: not a huge list. I mean, some of that's an
- 14:35Speaker 1: indictment of their drafting, you know, Nikhil Harry wasn't going
- 14:38Speaker 1: on to, to excel anywhere else. But, you know, you
- 14:40Speaker 1: look around the league with like Sam Donald, Leonard Williams,
- 14:42Speaker 1: both on the Seahawks and, you know, sauce Gardner. I mean,
- 14:45Speaker 1: he hasn't had the success yet, but a lot of
- 14:47Speaker 1: these guys are really good players and they leave there
- 14:49Speaker 1: and they are really good players elsewhere. And, It's just
- 14:52Speaker 1: got to be tough as a Jets fan because it
- 14:54Speaker 1: just feels like looking for the quarterback.
- 14:55Speaker 5: But they were really, I mean, aside from Darnold, those
- 14:58Speaker 5: other guys were really good players with the Jets.
- 15:00Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 15:01Speaker 5: Like, it just, Quentin Williams was a stud with the Jets.
- 15:05Speaker 5: It doesn't matter if you don't have it all. Like,
- 15:07Speaker 5: you need to have good players and a good quarterback,
- 15:10Speaker 5: not just one or the other. And then Fred's right
- 15:12Speaker 5: about the coach, too. You know, if you don't have
- 15:14Speaker 5: a good coach, sometimes that can hold you back.
- 15:17Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 15:18Speaker 5: I saw, like, Adam Gase took a lot of the
- 15:20Speaker 5: blame for Sam Darnold. You know, like, he wasn't great
- 15:24Speaker 5: in developing him.
- 15:26Speaker 4: We should mention, looking ahead to Thursday, in the category
- 15:30Speaker 4: of it always works out for the Patriots, we have
- 15:33Speaker 4: a PED.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Oh, Montez Sweat.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Montez Sweat.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Call for the Bears next week. Two games.
- 15:39Speaker 10: Yep.
- 15:40Speaker 4: So he'll be out for Thursday night?
- 15:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:45Speaker 5: I mean, obviously, that's a tough break for the Bears.
- 15:47Speaker 5: I don't think the Patriots are necessarily, you know, and
- 15:50Speaker 5: I'm the snarky one. The Patriots won't have to apologize
- 15:53Speaker 5: to anybody with the way their season's been going with
- 15:55Speaker 5: the personnel that they've been missing from game to game.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Yeah. I think Caleb Williams is the big question there.
- 16:02Speaker 5: That would be the biggest thing for me. If he
- 16:03Speaker 5: doesn't play.
- 16:04Speaker 1: They got it. be pretty bad last week by the Packers.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I mean, it was surprising.
- 16:09Speaker 4: I hope Caleb Williams does play.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Yeah. No, me too.
- 16:11Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 16:11Speaker 4: I want to see the defense against him.
- 16:13Speaker 5: But he, he's going to need to play this week
- 16:16Speaker 5: and then, because if he just comes back and then
- 16:19Speaker 5: he's not ready, you know what I mean? Like, but
- 16:21Speaker 5: if he plays this week and he's physically fine, then,
- 16:24Speaker 5: you know, game on.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 1: They get him an unguide back to, I mean, it's,
- 16:27Speaker 1: I think that they want that two headed monster running
- 16:29Speaker 1: back that there's been really effective, not quite as effective
- 16:31Speaker 1: without him, but, No, that'll be a quick turnaround. I mean,
- 16:34Speaker 1: this is interesting week here, eight days that we have
- 16:37Speaker 1: for these Patriots. Two winnable games, I would say, but
- 16:40Speaker 1: it's just always a challenge on Thursday Night Football to
- 16:42Speaker 1: go on the road against an NFC opponent you don't
- 16:44Speaker 1: really know all that well.
- 16:45Speaker 5: I think that's going to be a really hard game.
- 16:47Speaker 5: And if Caleb Williams plays, if it's Tyson Bajan or whatever,
- 16:51Speaker 5: then whatever. But I think that'll be a really tough game.
- 16:54Speaker 1: I mean, I think it'll be interesting to see what
- 16:57Speaker 1: Ben Johnson shows you about your defense and how he
- 17:00Speaker 1: chooses to attack you. I mean, I would expect to
- 17:03Speaker 1: They do have their two backs to really, I mean,
- 17:05Speaker 1: that's the thought that kept coming to me watching Buffalo
- 17:07Speaker 1: run James Cook and having so much success. And it
- 17:10Speaker 1: was like, if I'm a Bills fan, I'm watching this
- 17:12Speaker 1: being like, why didn't you try this against the Patriots?
- 17:14Speaker 1: Because they're not the most stout team up front. You know,
- 17:17Speaker 1: I would have tested their run defense a lot more.
- 17:19Speaker 1: I expect Chicago will do the same. Yeah, I just
- 17:21Speaker 1: think it's plays.
- 17:23Speaker 5: You know, my bigger takeaway from the Buffalo game is
- 17:26Speaker 5: why did Josh Allen run the ball 10 times every
- 17:29Speaker 5: game but only like four times against the Patriots.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Was it just what the Patriots did?
- 17:33Speaker 5: Did they just prevent him from running and, you know,
- 17:36Speaker 5: the discipline pass rush?
- 17:37Speaker 1: Was that all it was?
- 17:39Speaker 5: Cause when he's moving the chains with his legs, that's
- 17:43Speaker 5: adding plays. Now I can run James cook more.
- 17:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 5: You know, they still should have run James cook more
- 17:48Speaker 5: than 12 times. I, I mean, I, I get that, but,
- 17:52Speaker 5: you know, there was stretches of that game where they
- 17:55Speaker 5: moved the ball and scored. So it's not like they needed,
- 17:58Speaker 5: you know, they got some big plays in that game
- 18:00Speaker 5: and kind of kept the plays down.
- 18:01Speaker 1: You know what I mean? So you don't pile up
- 18:04Speaker 1: 20 carries. It was only 12.
- 18:05Speaker 5: I agree with Mike. They still should have run James
- 18:08Speaker 5: Cook more than that. But I think with Chicago, if
- 18:12Speaker 5: they're healthy, now their defense is suspect. Their secondary is
- 18:15Speaker 5: flat out bad. So the Patriots should be able to
- 18:18Speaker 5: score in Chicago, but If you run the ball, if
- 18:22Speaker 5: the Bears run the ball, that's how they possess it.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:25Speaker 5: And that's when they played the Jets a couple of
- 18:27Speaker 5: weeks ago. They held the ball for 44 minutes.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Wow.
- 18:31Speaker 1: I mean, that's the formula. I try, you know, but
- 18:33Speaker 1: no guarantee. But, you know, and then Caleb Williams comes
- 18:35Speaker 1: back in the mix, and then it's a whole other, like,
- 18:38Speaker 1: you know, hard to read. Going to make good plays.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Extend plays.
- 18:41Speaker 1: You know, extend plays. I mean, he's fun to watch.
- 18:44Speaker 5: He's tremendous.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Going back to the Jets.
- 18:48Speaker 10: Oh, right.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Aside from turnovers. How do the Jets pull off a
- 18:52Speaker 4: win against the Patriots? Because I think the Patriots should
- 18:56Speaker 4: go in favor. What's the early spread here?
- 18:58Speaker 1: It's like seven.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Seven, yeah.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's a big spread.
- 19:01Speaker 5: Might catch the answer.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Brees Hall and Braylon Allen. Or what do they think?
- 19:05Speaker 2: Braylon.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Braylon Allen. Sorry, I was thinking of Braylon Edwards for
- 19:08Speaker 1: a second there. Who had a big game last week
- 19:11Speaker 1: without Brees Hall in, and he's a big back. I
- 19:13Speaker 1: liked him coming out. He's kind of raw and young, but. 6'2, big,
- 19:17Speaker 1: powerful guy. We talked, too, about last week. He's playing
- 19:20Speaker 1: in the rain. It's not as easy to tackle a
- 19:22Speaker 1: huge freight train like that, but I'd expect to see
- 19:25Speaker 1: both those guys. Brees Hall's ready to go. That's the
- 19:28Speaker 1: best way, especially if there's some uncertainty about your receiving core.
- 19:32Speaker 1: You don't have Sadiq. Mason Taylor's okay, but that's the
- 19:38Speaker 1: route to me. I think this Patriots run defense has
- 19:40Speaker 1: to prove that they can get to a level that
- 19:44Speaker 1: Is it going to hinder them? It's a concern of
- 19:46Speaker 1: mine right now about the run defense. I'm totally with Mike.
- 19:48Speaker 5: The formula for the Jets is 100 yards from Brees
- 19:51Speaker 5: Hall or Braylon Allen if Hall is not healthy. A
- 19:57Speaker 5: solid game from Garrett Wilson. He can't be taken out
- 20:00Speaker 5: of the game. And he really hasn't been for the
- 20:02Speaker 5: most part. Even though he's kind of the only guy
- 20:07Speaker 5: he gets his generally.
- 20:08Speaker 4: He's used to it, man.
- 20:10Speaker 5: But more importantly, it's, it's not just like big plays
- 20:13Speaker 5: to score. It's ball control.
- 20:16Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 20:16Speaker 5: Keep the Patriots on the sideline.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Right. And, and, their pass rush is getting after the
- 20:21Speaker 1: Patriots edge, you know.
- 20:23Speaker 5: Tackles and 17, 13.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:25Speaker 5: You know, you win that kind of a game. I
- 20:27Speaker 5: could see the Jets being competitive in a game like that.
- 20:30Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 20:30Speaker 5: I think right now the Patriots offense is on a roll,
- 20:32Speaker 5: so I'm not anticipating that happening, but that would be
- 20:35Speaker 5: the Jets formula.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Do you have to change up things from the Raiders
- 20:38Speaker 4: game to this? If you're the Patriots or it's like, no, what,
- 20:41Speaker 4: What work then could work this game, too?
- 20:43Speaker 1: I mean, I think in a perfect world, you have
- 20:45Speaker 1: your cornerbacks back and you can play more man than
- 20:48Speaker 1: you maybe could have played last week. And you can
- 20:50Speaker 1: man up, you know, not just Garrett Wilson, but I
- 20:53Speaker 1: think the other guys, you know, try to force their
- 20:55Speaker 1: twos and threes and fours to get off of man coverage.
- 20:58Speaker 1: So I think that would be different to me, depending
- 21:00Speaker 1: on the personnel. You know, otherwise, they probably have to
- 21:03Speaker 1: have a more zone-heavy plan.
- 21:05Speaker 5: I don't know if you can get away with just blitzing,
- 21:08Speaker 5: you know, indiscriminately when they have... Because I think there
- 21:12Speaker 5: are better receivers in a quarterback that can move a little.
- 21:14Speaker 5: He's not overly mobile, but he's much more mobile than
- 21:18Speaker 5: Kirk Cousins. So I think if you wanted to have
- 21:21Speaker 5: the same plan that you had last week, you might
- 21:23Speaker 5: be opening yourself up to a player or two.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Did I hear right that the Jets worked out Matt Judon?
- 21:28Speaker 1: Yeah, he got released from a practice squad. So he's been,
- 21:31Speaker 1: I think he was on maybe the 49ers or the Rams,
- 21:33Speaker 1: somewhere in California, I forget where. But yeah, he's still,
- 21:36Speaker 1: you know, it's funny these guys, Some of these veterans have, like,
- 21:39Speaker 1: a second life as, like, practice squad guy. And they
- 21:42Speaker 1: kind of kick around to different teams. And, you know,
- 21:45Speaker 1: I'm hoping for a chance or an injury maybe to
- 21:47Speaker 1: get back in. But it was funny to see Judon
- 21:49Speaker 1: still kicking around. Red sleeves.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Right.
- 21:53Speaker 1: We'll have green sleeves.
- 21:54Speaker 4: Green sleeves.
- 21:55Speaker 1: In this game.
- 21:55Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 21:57Speaker 4: So we're liking our chances here.
- 22:01Speaker 1: I like the Patriots offense right now. I mean, let's
- 22:03Speaker 1: see what. let's see what it looks like today. Who's available.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Who isn't.
- 22:07Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 22:07Speaker 1: That'll, that'll color it a little bit.
- 22:09Speaker 4: I'm a little worried about this running back situation.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. I just, I don't want to pile
- 22:13Speaker 1: it all on Ramond Ray and be like, okay, get
- 22:15Speaker 1: through the next, how many games are allowed? You know,
- 22:17Speaker 1: 12 games. I'm fine with it.
- 22:19Speaker 5: Well, I mean like in the short term, I wouldn't
- 22:21Speaker 5: want to play like 12 games with one running back,
- 22:24Speaker 5: but for, for, for a month, but he's, he's banged up.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:28Speaker 1: And, uh, So they brought back Hassan Haskins, too, in
- 22:33Speaker 1: the practice squad.
- 22:35Speaker 4: They'll probably elevate him.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Yeah, him or Lane Larrison. Going back to yesterday's conversation
- 22:41Speaker 1: where Lane Larrison more of a third down kind of
- 22:43Speaker 1: back like Rex Burkhead. Haskins probably more of an early
- 22:46Speaker 1: down back. I don't know how they'll balance it all out,
- 22:49Speaker 1: but maybe see more Corey Kiner.
- 22:51Speaker 4: I think you're going to see a lot of passing. Yeah.
- 22:53Speaker 5: That's why I'm not overly worried about the running back
- 22:56Speaker 5: situation in the short term. I don't, again, I don't
- 22:58Speaker 5: want to go a whole year with one running back.
- 22:59Speaker 1: That's hard.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 5: Like that's really rolling the dice.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Be interested though. This is Paul's kind of game.
- 23:05Speaker 5: It's going to be, but I think that's what they do.
- 23:08Speaker 5: They haven't really run the ball overly effectively for most
- 23:10Speaker 5: of the season.
- 23:12Speaker 1: You know, and it had some moments, but not nothing consistent.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Just disappointing for Henderson. You know, I just, I don't know.
- 23:18Speaker 1: He was a little bit under the radar. I feel like,
- 23:21Speaker 1: I mean, some people like to me, he was under there.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of fantasy people were thinking
- 23:25Speaker 1: he's RB one and he's got this explosiveness and, um,
- 23:28Speaker 1: you know, and just, he's got to round out his game.
- 23:32Speaker 1: You know, I just would love to see some more consistency.
- 23:34Speaker 1: It can't all be, I'm going to give you two
- 23:36Speaker 1: big plays and 14, two and a half yard plays,
- 23:40Speaker 1: you know, and, I don't know. I just am a
- 23:42Speaker 1: little disappointed how it's all worked out. He had an
- 23:44Speaker 1: ankle injury in the summer that, and I'm not his fault.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I'm just, you know, how it all kind of came together.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Ankle injury in the summer doesn't really get going. And
- 23:51Speaker 1: now he's got another ankle injury and it's going to
- 23:53Speaker 1: be out for a bit.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 5: So to me, the corners that Fred talked about off
- 23:57Speaker 5: the top of the show, assuming that they get at
- 23:59Speaker 5: least one of those guys back, I'm anticipating both of
- 24:03Speaker 5: them coming back, but assuming one, I think that sort
- 24:07Speaker 5: of stabilizes, you know, stops the bleeding with the health
- 24:11Speaker 5: problems on defense if you get those two guys back. Offensively,
- 24:17Speaker 5: I'm not as concerned about the Henderson situation. Campbell's a loss. Like,
- 24:21Speaker 5: you're going to plug in Caleb Lomu at left tackle. But,
- 24:25Speaker 5: you know, Mike and I were talking before the show.
- 24:28Speaker 5: There's good tape of him at Utah going against David Bailey,
- 24:32Speaker 5: the young rookie pass rusher for the Jets. Lomo really
- 24:36Speaker 5: did a good job against him when they faced each other,
- 24:38Speaker 5: Utah and Texas Tech, in.
- 24:41Speaker 1: A Big 12 matchup.
- 24:42Speaker 5: So I have, at least Lomo has some familiarity with
- 24:47Speaker 5: the guy he's going to be seeing a lot. Will
- 24:49Speaker 5: McDonald on the other side.
- 24:50Speaker 1: It's a good sub pass rusher, good situational pass rusher.
- 24:54Speaker 5: The Jets are not without talent. This is not a
- 24:57Speaker 5: Miami situation where they've stripped it to the studs. Like
- 25:01Speaker 5: the last time we saw the Jets, Was a Miami situation.
- 25:04Speaker 5: It was completely 30 guys that.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Aren't in the league anymore.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Non-competitive. Non-competitive.
- 25:10Speaker 5: It was a JV game. This will be more challenging
- 25:13Speaker 5: than that.
- 25:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:14Speaker 1: To Mario Davis, too. Just a good, wily vet in
- 25:16Speaker 1: the middle. Knows what's going on. Smart. Physical. Maybe doesn't
- 25:20Speaker 1: run as well as he used to.
- 25:21Speaker 5: The big guy that we both love in the middle
- 25:23Speaker 5: that they picked up from Tennessee.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Big defensive tackle. Sweat. Yeah.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Yep.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Big boy.
- 25:30Speaker 5: Good, good, solid player. They've done a nice job of
- 25:34Speaker 5: sort of supplementing the roster with NFL veteran players that
- 25:39Speaker 5: can contribute and help. Now the hard part comes because
- 25:43Speaker 5: now you have to find, you know, you have, you know,
- 25:47Speaker 5: a good receiver in Garrett Wilson and a good running
- 25:50Speaker 5: back in Brees Hall. So he has some good weapons.
- 25:52Speaker 5: You have a couple of young tackles that you like.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Now you have to get a quarterback that can distribute
- 25:57Speaker 5: the ball to these guys. I think Geno Smith is
- 26:00Speaker 5: a good, like Kirk Cousins last week, good sort of
- 26:03Speaker 5: placeholder for somebody. I just don't know where you go.
- 26:06Speaker 5: I don't know where you go in the draft based
- 26:08Speaker 5: on what we've seen. My luck can change, but Dante Moore,
- 26:14Speaker 5: I really like. I don't know when he's going to
- 26:16Speaker 5: play again. He's the one that got the ridiculous cheap
- 26:20Speaker 5: shot from the USC.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Game, and he hasn't played since.
- 26:25Speaker 5: You know, Arch Manning has been a real roller coaster,
- 26:28Speaker 5: to use Mike's favorite term about the roller coaster.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I love roller coasters.
- 26:31Speaker 5: There are times that he looks great, and other times
- 26:33Speaker 5: he looks like he doesn't process the game very well.
- 26:37Speaker 5: I don't know where you go with these quarterbacks. Who
- 26:39Speaker 5: do you feel great about taking in the top five? Right,
- 26:42Speaker 5: and being the Jets, you know they'll probably make the
- 26:44Speaker 5: wrong choice. I mean, I kind of like Mensah from Miami.
- 26:47Speaker 5: You know, people worry about his size a little bit.
- 26:49Speaker 5: I think he's big enough. I mean, I like Chambliss,
- 26:51Speaker 5: but he is small at Ole Miss. Notre Dame's kid,
- 26:54Speaker 5: he's one of those guys, too.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I don't like him at all.
- 26:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm just running down the comments. Yeah, he's probably
- 27:00Speaker 5: going to be a first-round pick. I don't love really
- 27:03Speaker 5: anything about his game.
- 27:04Speaker 1: But if you're the Jets and we're doing Jets unfiltered, J-U,
- 27:07Speaker 1: what more do you need on offense for a quarterback?
- 27:09Speaker 1: I mean, you've got Gary Wilson. You probably like Omar Cooper.
- 27:12Speaker 1: I mean, he's a physical guy. They seem... complimentary Kenyan
- 27:15Speaker 1: Sadiq first tight end a weapon two tackles you know
- 27:19Speaker 1: I mean the conversation with Drake May was like well
- 27:21Speaker 1: you don't have the pieces in place yet there's no
- 27:24Speaker 1: such complaint for the Jets they've invested in all the
- 27:26Speaker 1: key spots and it's really just waiting for him you
- 27:28Speaker 1: know they need.
- 27:29Speaker 5: That quarterback that's kind of back to what I was
- 27:31Speaker 5: saying at the beginning you know and I agree with
- 27:33Speaker 5: Fred like Yeah, you could do it that way, and
- 27:36Speaker 5: they have. They've drafted a lot of good players over
- 27:39Speaker 5: the years, but they haven't been able to hit on
- 27:40Speaker 5: the quarterback. It was Sam Darnold who didn't pan out
- 27:43Speaker 5: for them. It was Wilson after that, didn't pan out
- 27:47Speaker 5: for them, hasn't panned out for anybody. And now you're
- 27:50Speaker 5: just sort of plugging in a retread veteran, which I
- 27:54Speaker 5: think was a good move for them. It's better than
- 27:56Speaker 5: putting Brady Cook out there that we saw the last
- 27:58Speaker 5: time the Patriots played the Jets.
- 28:00Speaker 4: Yeah. But bridge to what?
- 28:03Speaker 5: Bridge to mediocrity is what it is.
- 28:07Speaker 1: I don't know if Gino, if he's a one-and-donner, but
- 28:10Speaker 1: does he stick around to be a veteran, to break
- 28:12Speaker 1: a rookie in? Or do they, I mean, good quarterbacks
- 28:16Speaker 1: don't really hit free agency anymore, right? Like nobody that
- 28:18Speaker 1: you would believe in.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Or that you could.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Well, no, you're looking for a guy. Like Kyler Murray.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:25Speaker 5: And I think you can win with guys. And I
- 28:28Speaker 5: think there are guys that change teams, but they're not
- 28:30Speaker 5: a guy that you're going to say, well, we're all
- 28:32Speaker 5: set a quarterback because we got this guy in free agency.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:35Speaker 5: Like it's Kyler Murray who's played better and better every week,
- 28:37Speaker 5: by the way.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Kirk Cousins.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Kirk Cousins. Well, Sam Darnold.
- 28:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:43Speaker 5: Cousins is beyond that, but he was once that, you know,
- 28:46Speaker 5: with Minnesota. He was a free agent guy that sort
- 28:49Speaker 5: of made Minnesota a better team. You know, but there
- 28:54Speaker 5: are guys that, you know, Baker Mayfield, you know, with
- 28:57Speaker 5: Tampa is a guy that was a free agent acquisition
- 29:01Speaker 5: that lifted Tampa. But you're not going to get to
- 29:04Speaker 5: where you want to go.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Long-term contender.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Generally with a guy, you know.
- 29:10Speaker 4: Podcast at Patriots.com is the email address. Sean in South Jersey.
- 29:14Speaker 4: I was listening to Greg Bedard, and he has been
- 29:17Speaker 4: poo-pooing the excitement that many have had of Drake's performance
- 29:21Speaker 4: last week, and he said that the Raiders' passing defense
- 29:24Speaker 4: was ranked toward the bottom of the league. But since
- 29:26Speaker 4: DVOA is based off of opponent strength and the Patriots'
- 29:30Speaker 4: offense struggled the first couple of weeks before the Bills,
- 29:34Speaker 4: then wouldn't the numbers they put up cause them to
- 29:36Speaker 4: now be ranked so low? I just think.
- 29:39Speaker 1: RAIN.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Like this early in the season don't mean much given
- 29:43Speaker 4: the sample size. There's something to that. The sample size
- 29:49Speaker 4: gets more easily skewed early in the season.
- 29:54Speaker 5: I agree with that, but I also agree that the
- 29:56Speaker 5: Raiders are not a good pass defense.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Right. Well, that's like, you can just, instead of having
- 30:01Speaker 1: to rely on numbers, you could just watch them. Right.
- 30:04Speaker 5: You can watch Tyquan Thornton, you know, get deep like
- 30:07Speaker 5: five times in a game before he dislocated his ankle.
- 30:10Speaker 1: I can't tell you what number they are, one to 32,
- 30:12Speaker 1: but they're closer to 32 than they are one. Right.
- 30:15Speaker 5: I think they were 25 going into the week in
- 30:18Speaker 5: DVOA defense. But I don't care as much about stuff
- 30:26Speaker 5: like that. I care more about what I'm watching. And
- 30:30Speaker 5: Drake may, like, I could easily snarkily make an argument.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Well, yeah, sure.
- 30:34Speaker 5: If you played the Raiders in week one, you wouldn't
- 30:36Speaker 5: have gotten off to a slow start. But I would say,
- 30:40Speaker 5: based on what I was looking at with Drake May,
- 30:42Speaker 5: there's a chance that he might not have played as
- 30:44Speaker 5: well as he did Sunday in week one, regardless of opponent.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 30:47Speaker 5: Because he looked like a different guy.
- 30:50Speaker 1: You know?
- 30:51Speaker 5: So I agree about the small sample size. Mike and
- 30:54Speaker 5: I were talking about this. It's like you have all
- 30:57Speaker 5: these power indexes, Fred. And, you know, this team is
- 31:03Speaker 5: favored over that team because of what they've done in
- 31:07Speaker 5: the first five games of the season, which may be
- 31:10Speaker 5: like the Raiders last week cherry-picked. Well, they beat a
- 31:14Speaker 5: winless Chargers team. They beat a winless Dolphins team. And
- 31:18Speaker 5: they beat a one-win New Orleans team. Well, that's going
- 31:20Speaker 5: to make their numbers all look good.
- 31:22Speaker 4: That was a terrible.
- 31:24Speaker 5: Terrible strong. That was not a very good team. We
- 31:26Speaker 5: watched them the other day. Did they look like a
- 31:28Speaker 5: good team?
- 31:29Speaker 4: Well, we made them look bad. I agree. I agree.
- 31:32Speaker 5: But did you notice anything about that team that you said, well,
- 31:35Speaker 5: that's really good other than Brock Bowers?
- 31:37Speaker 4: I was just going to say, other than Brock Bowers, though.
- 31:40Speaker 5: And, you know, they came in 3-1.
- 31:42Speaker 1: So the football power index has them ranked as such.
- 31:46Speaker 1: And you struggled in the first few games because you
- 31:49Speaker 1: played Seattle and Jacksonville. And you're down here, and you're
- 31:55Speaker 1: only favored by three and a half points.
- 31:56Speaker 4: Like Bill said.
- 31:57Speaker 5: I said that I thought it would be closer to
- 32:00Speaker 5: a touchdown.
- 32:01Speaker 4: The season starts after Thanksgiving. That's when it starts.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Well, when you guys look back.
- 32:05Speaker 5: Unfortunately, you can be out of it at Thanksgiving if
- 32:07Speaker 5: you don't play well enough.
- 32:08Speaker 1: You guys are skewed because you watched a great team
- 32:10Speaker 1: for 20 years play, but do you feel watching September
- 32:13Speaker 1: games that those were indicative of who those specific Patriots
- 32:17Speaker 1: teams were? I remember a lot of weird September games
- 32:20Speaker 1: of like, Some of them. They're in a life and
- 32:23Speaker 1: death battle with the Bills, you know, and then end
- 32:25Speaker 1: of the season. I mean, I know. Oh, sick.
- 32:27Speaker 4: But yeah, I don't want to just say Patriots. But
- 32:29Speaker 4: when you had guys like Brady or Peyton Manning, you
- 32:32Speaker 4: knew like it was just so consistent most of the time.
- 32:36Speaker 5: I mean, the Patriots opened a lot of seasons like eight.
- 32:39Speaker 4: No, nine.
- 32:39Speaker 5: You know, like so they didn't always struggle in September.
- 32:42Speaker 1: No, no, I know. But but there were some times that,
- 32:45Speaker 1: you know, there were games that you're like, oh, sure.
- 32:47Speaker 4: This is weird.
- 32:47Speaker 1: You know, I mean, yeah. Sometimes it is true. I mean,
- 32:50Speaker 1: the Wildcat game, you know, like, it was like, okay,
- 32:53Speaker 1: this team's got some issues that, you know, maybe.
- 32:55Speaker 4: We weren't quite around. That was later in the season, right?
- 32:56Speaker 1: No, that was early. Was it? Week two, I think.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Week three, I think.
- 32:59Speaker 4: Oh, was it that early?
- 33:00Speaker 1: Three, yeah.
- 33:01Speaker 4: It was after the Jets. That might have been one
- 33:03Speaker 4: of my more frustrating games.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:05Speaker 4: Because they just kept doing it. I was like, can't
- 33:07Speaker 4: you just figure this out?
- 33:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 33:09Speaker 4: Make an adjustment. Oh, I was just, Tony, what was it, Soprano? Sperano.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Sperano.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:15Speaker 1: With his glasses. I know. That was... It was part of, like, too,
- 33:19Speaker 1: where it was like, how can this happen to Bill Belichick?
- 33:21Speaker 1: He's a defensive genius, and they're running this random play
- 33:24Speaker 1: over and over, and they have no answer for it.
- 33:26Speaker 5: Well, what really, you know, was really stood out that one.
- 33:30Speaker 5: So the whole game goes by, and they couldn't stop it.
- 33:32Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:33Speaker 1: It was all sequenced off each other, too. And then
- 33:35Speaker 1: they figured out, you know, whatever, moving forward.
- 33:39Speaker 5: Four or five years later, they're playing Denver in Denver,
- 33:42Speaker 5: and it's Tim Tebow.
- 33:43Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 33:44Speaker 5: And the game started in a very similar way, where
- 33:47Speaker 5: Denver's just moving the ball all over the place with
- 33:49Speaker 5: these designed zone read runs, and Tebow is running all
- 33:53Speaker 5: over the place.
- 33:53Speaker 1: He can't throw it.
- 33:56Speaker 5: But I want to say that we're losing 16-7 early
- 33:59Speaker 5: in the game. And then all of a sudden... They
- 34:02Speaker 5: do one of those things where, you know, Bill's got
- 34:04Speaker 5: his back to the game and he's talking to the
- 34:05Speaker 5: defense and it's just do your.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Job, blah, blah, blah.
- 34:08Speaker 5: And they never move the ball an inch again in
- 34:10Speaker 5: the rest of the game. And you were like, why
- 34:11Speaker 5: couldn't they do that against Miami in that Wildcat game?
- 34:13Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Why couldn't he see, oh, if we do this, this,
- 34:16Speaker 1: and this? Because he's a defensive genius. Right, right, right.
- 34:18Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that sarcastically. Right, right, right.
- 34:21Speaker 5: Like, why couldn't he do it that day against Miami?
- 34:24Speaker 5: But he had the answer so quickly in that Denver game.
- 34:27Speaker 4: I remember that game. That's why I was so frustrated.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Like, what is going on here?
- 34:31Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 34:32Speaker 4: Barton Poland says Elijah Ponder is having one of the
- 34:35Speaker 4: best starts to a career of an undrafted player in
- 34:38Speaker 4: NFL history. Per Nate Tice, only six undrafted players since
- 34:43Speaker 4: the NFL draft went to seven rounds. So 1994 have
- 34:47Speaker 4: had more than eight sacks in their first two seasons.
- 34:51Speaker 4: Cameron Wake has the most with 14. Ponder already has
- 34:55Speaker 4: eight and a half with 12 games to go. This
- 34:58Speaker 4: is truly remarkable.
- 35:01Speaker 5: If we're just going to eliminate all the other undrafted,
- 35:05Speaker 5: like John Randall doesn't count, I guess.
- 35:09Speaker 1: It's been a really good year. It's been a really
- 35:11Speaker 1: good start here for him.
- 35:13Speaker 5: He's been their best edge guy.
- 35:15Speaker 1: As everybody who watches this show knows, I was crazy
- 35:18Speaker 1: concerned about all that. I still am. They've been really good.
- 35:21Speaker 1: They've been really solid. The way I frame it is
- 35:25Speaker 1: I don't see them as dominant edge presences. I just
- 35:28Speaker 1: see them as fundamentally solid players within the defense who...
- 35:33Speaker 1: don't get out of position. And, you know, but ponder,
- 35:36Speaker 1: I mean, ponder on the strip stack one that, you know, he,
- 35:38Speaker 1: he can still win off the edge. So they're just
- 35:40Speaker 1: young players though, too. So I don't, you know, these
- 35:42Speaker 1: aren't finished products. So where they're at right now to
- 35:45Speaker 1: me is really encouraging. And I'm excited to, I mean,
- 35:48Speaker 1: gay back is, is so fun to watch. Like I,
- 35:50Speaker 1: you know, just as somebody who has to watch the
- 35:52Speaker 1: Patriots every week, getting to watch a guy who plays
- 35:55Speaker 1: with that kind of style, it's, it's fun to see. He's,
- 35:58Speaker 1: he's an absolute beast. And, you know, teams trying to
- 36:00Speaker 1: block him with a tight end. It's like, Oh, my God.
- 36:02Speaker 1: They're overwhelmed by this guy. So I just– I think
- 36:06Speaker 1: the sky's the limit for him as he continues to develop.
- 36:08Speaker 1: And just that trio they have, it's developed. I didn't
- 36:11Speaker 1: think we'd get to a point where you're like, how
- 36:13Speaker 1: do you get Harold Landry back in this lineup and why?
- 36:16Speaker 1: Because I don't want to– I didn't stop their depth.
- 36:19Speaker 5: I'm not anywhere near as high in this group as
- 36:21Speaker 5: everybody else.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Well, no, you're definitely not.
- 36:24Speaker 4: We need more sample size.
- 36:26Speaker 1: But I think, Paul, your problem is that you hear
- 36:28Speaker 1: people getting excited about them, and you get like, well,
- 36:31Speaker 1: they're not that good. And I'm not trying to tell
- 36:35Speaker 1: you that they're amazing in that you just find Miles, Garrett,
- 36:38Speaker 1: and DeMarcus Ware. Oh, no.
- 36:40Speaker 5: I'm not being unfair in comparing them to those guys.
- 36:44Speaker 1: But do you think it's unreasonable to say that the
- 36:46Speaker 1: guys have been really good? Wow. What's missing for you?
- 36:51Speaker 5: I don't see them doing the beating guys one-on-one like
- 36:54Speaker 5: you guys do. I see the linebackers being heavily involved
- 37:00Speaker 5: with the pressure that kind of forces the quarterback into
- 37:03Speaker 5: a sack. That's what I see a lot.
- 37:06Speaker 1: And I think Ponder's been the best of the group,
- 37:08Speaker 1: but I think he's also known as a pass rusher.
- 37:11Speaker 5: Akis, to me, is known as a physical... kind of
- 37:15Speaker 5: run guy who gets to the quarterback on effort. And
- 37:19Speaker 5: I've seen that. Draymond Jones, to me, is a little
- 37:22Speaker 5: bit more of a combination. And I've been really impressed
- 37:25Speaker 5: with his professionalism. I think he's been vitally important with
- 37:29Speaker 5: his toughness. And again, I know I keep talking about
- 37:32Speaker 5: this one play. I am so impressed with that play
- 37:34Speaker 5: that he made last week. Like, if Trey Tucker gets
- 37:40Speaker 5: around the corner on that play, we might be looking
- 37:43Speaker 5: at a different Game. I'm not talking about a different
- 37:46Speaker 5: outcome of the game. The Patriots were probably going to
- 37:48Speaker 5: win that game a hundred times out of a hundred,
- 37:50Speaker 5: but if it's 14, 14, and now instead of taking
- 37:54Speaker 5: over at the 40 yard line for your two minute drive,
- 37:57Speaker 5: maybe you take over at your 25, maybe it's 17,
- 37:59Speaker 5: 14 at the half instead of 21, seven at the half.
- 38:04Speaker 1: That's a big difference.
- 38:05Speaker 5: And I, and I do, I kind of attribute it
- 38:07Speaker 5: to one play that Draymond Jones made. I think those
- 38:10Speaker 5: guys have been good. I don't want to make it
- 38:12Speaker 5: sound like I'm saying that they, they stink. I think
- 38:14Speaker 5: you can run at ponder. I think he's weak against
- 38:16Speaker 5: the run. Um, and I think at this makes incredible,
- 38:23Speaker 5: like physical plays two or three times every game that
- 38:28Speaker 5: make the real, like bulldozing Dion Dawkins.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Um, And I think.
- 38:35Speaker 5: People sort of, it might be a me thing. I
- 38:39Speaker 5: just think people are getting a little ahead of themselves.
- 38:42Speaker 1: I just get excited when I see a rookie play
- 38:45Speaker 1: and play with that kind of emotion and energy and
- 38:48Speaker 1: you know it's just that i think is what the
- 38:50Speaker 1: defense needs it.
- 38:51Speaker 5: Need i guess i just was expecting that of a
- 38:53Speaker 5: guy you know like you you're the one that you
- 38:55Speaker 5: put me on this guy yeah yeah like mike mike
- 38:58Speaker 5: mike invented gay back and i'm not lying mike mike
- 39:03Speaker 5: came to me during the draft process and asked me
- 39:05Speaker 5: to watch two or three guys and one of them
- 39:07Speaker 5: was gay back is I watched him for like 10
- 39:09Speaker 5: minutes and I went in and I was like, I
- 39:11Speaker 5: really like this guy.
- 39:12Speaker 1: I like the most.
- 39:12Speaker 5: He's going to like, he's like a second round guy.
- 39:15Speaker 5: And when they drafted him, I think we all thought
- 39:18Speaker 5: he's going to play immediately. And now he plays immediately.
- 39:21Speaker 5: And everybody's like, this is unbelievable. I didn't see this coming.
- 39:23Speaker 1: I guess maybe it's, I was expecting him to be
- 39:26Speaker 1: a contributor right away. Yeah.
- 39:27Speaker 5: So maybe I'm not as blown away by it.
- 39:30Speaker 1: As other people are. I think probably too, I had
- 39:32Speaker 1: a scare in camp where it was like, Oh, is
- 39:35Speaker 1: this guy?
- 39:37Speaker 5: I think sometimes his eyes get in the wrong place
- 39:40Speaker 5: and he's running, chasing cars a little bit at times.
- 39:42Speaker 1: We saw them like, his first time on a football field,
- 39:44Speaker 1: you know, like that. But I just, I think for me,
- 39:47Speaker 1: I went from, you know, your edge. Well, when I
- 39:49Speaker 1: went from a place of being like, I mean, it
- 39:52Speaker 1: was just, I think anybody who watched him knew. Hey,
- 39:54Speaker 1: I'm trying to apologize.
- 39:56Speaker 5: After I yelled at you about a hook and ladder,
- 39:58Speaker 5: I'm trying to get on your good side again. I'm
- 40:00Speaker 5: giving you the.
- 40:01Speaker 1: Flowers, except the flowers. We'll talk about that off air, Paul.
- 40:04Speaker 5: No, Mike, Mike invented Accus for me.
- 40:07Speaker 1: But to go from, complete uncertainty and, you know, dream
- 40:10Speaker 1: on Jones. He's kind of kicked around a little bit.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Like he's not going to be able to produce the
- 40:14Speaker 1: kind of, you know, sack numbers that, that Caleb on
- 40:17Speaker 1: chase on produce last year. And what are you going
- 40:19Speaker 1: to get off the edge? And they're just going to
- 40:20Speaker 1: blow by, you know? So I think just having two
- 40:23Speaker 1: young players that you first and a second year player,
- 40:25Speaker 1: along with a veteran, who's kind of assimilated really well
- 40:28Speaker 1: into the system. And you know, that that's, that's, that's
- 40:31Speaker 1: just where I want to be. It's like, I think
- 40:32Speaker 1: these guys are playing really well within the defense right now.
- 40:34Speaker 1: And as they continue to develop, I'd like to see
- 40:37Speaker 1: your thing. Like, they start to make plays on their own.
- 40:40Speaker 1: But right now with those interior guys and, you know,
- 40:42Speaker 1: Milton Williams, I think it's just they're playing complementary football
- 40:45Speaker 1: and they're playing together. And that complement goes to the
- 40:48Speaker 1: coaching staff for getting them ready to go.
- 40:51Speaker 4: All right. Christian in L.A. on the phone. What's up, Christian?
- 40:56Speaker 1: Christian.
- 40:56Speaker 9: I always have the dour demeanor when you say that.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Can you blame me? Geez. Fred doesn't like you. Yeah.
- 41:04Speaker 9: Oh, well, thank you, Paul. That's news to me. Anyway,
- 41:07Speaker 9: you guys, I have heard about this guy on the Jets,
- 41:11Speaker 9: their edge guy. He's maybe a rookie or someone new,
- 41:14Speaker 9: and he's been really killing it. I know we have
- 41:16Speaker 9: Caleb Lomo, who's going to step in for Will Campbell, right?
- 41:21Speaker 9: So is Lomo going to play left tackle, or am
- 41:25Speaker 9: I wrong?
- 41:25Speaker 4: He'll probably play left tackle.
- 41:26Speaker 1: I would assume he would play left tackle.
- 41:29Speaker 9: So the question here today for me is if Lomo
- 41:33Speaker 9: plays exceptional, like let's say Will's out for three weeks
- 41:36Speaker 9: and Lomo plays exceptional, do we bring Will back and
- 41:39Speaker 9: kick him into guard or do we kick Lomo to
- 41:42Speaker 9: the right tackle? What happens if Lomo plays outstanding?
- 41:45Speaker 7: Thank you, guys.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Okay.
- 41:47Speaker 4: Listen, it's a decent question.
- 41:50Speaker 5: I guess as Lomo goes back to the bench, everybody's healthy. But, yeah,
- 41:54Speaker 5: that would be a great development. If you now have
- 41:58Speaker 5: a guy that you feel really good about for the
- 42:01Speaker 5: rest of the season.
- 42:02Speaker 1: For sure. I mean, that's, you know, everything goes back
- 42:04Speaker 1: to what I just said about the edge class. They
- 42:05Speaker 1: feel confident in young players. And, you know, if Caleb
- 42:08Speaker 1: Lovu can get to a point where you feel good
- 42:10Speaker 1: about three offensive linemen that you drafted in the last
- 42:13Speaker 1: two years, that's, I mean, that's goes back to the
- 42:16Speaker 1: jets thing. Protect Drake. I mean, that that's key one.
- 42:19Speaker 1: I think at this point, if that guy has time,
- 42:22Speaker 1: he's going to tear up defenses. So don't let, the
- 42:25Speaker 1: well run dry up front. I mean, I look to
- 42:27Speaker 1: the decision at right guard. I think AVT's been pretty
- 42:31Speaker 1: solid for them. They gave them a three-year deal. But
- 42:33Speaker 1: what do you do at right guard next year? That's
- 42:35Speaker 1: a Michael Wenyu position.
- 42:36Speaker 4: Do you look at him?
- 42:37Speaker 1: And that's what I.
- 42:38Speaker 5: Would say to Christian's point.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Is that where you make your move?
- 42:41Speaker 5: That's when you start thinking, okay, so I have two
- 42:46Speaker 5: guys that I feel really good about left tackle. Can
- 42:48Speaker 5: one of those guys play guard?
- 42:50Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 42:50Speaker 5: Or can one of those guys be a right tackle,
- 42:53Speaker 5: you know, if Morgan Moses, you know, is no longer
- 42:56Speaker 5: here next year? Those are some of the things that,
- 42:59Speaker 5: you know, smarter guys than me have to figure out.
- 43:01Speaker 1: I don't know. Do you flop it eventually and put
- 43:04Speaker 1: AVT on the right side and Campbell? Because Campbell's been
- 43:06Speaker 1: a left tackle, you know, maybe more a left guard.
- 43:08Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, I think that's a possibility, too.
- 43:11Speaker 1: But I just think, you know, and then you throw,
- 43:12Speaker 1: you know, Marcus Bryant crown over. I don't know what
- 43:14Speaker 1: they're going to do, but like... you just have like,
- 43:17Speaker 1: it's not like a few years.
- 43:18Speaker 5: Ago where you're like, Oh my God, I don't like
- 43:19Speaker 5: the idea of those guys playing, just so you know. No,
- 43:21Speaker 5: but I just, I like having.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Guys you drafted and developed. And you know, I just,
- 43:25Speaker 1: I come from a place a couple of years ago where,
- 43:28Speaker 1: you know, no offense to Vidarian Lowe, but it was like,
- 43:30Speaker 1: you know, we had Vidarian Lowe and then it was like,
- 43:32Speaker 1: I don't even know. I'm not even, you know, at
- 43:34Speaker 1: least you feel like, I don't know if those guys
- 43:35Speaker 1: would be good, but you got young players that you're
- 43:37Speaker 1: working with and that you're developing. And so if the
- 43:39Speaker 1: time comes that they have to go in, yep. you
- 43:42Speaker 1: know that they've been in your system a little bit.
- 43:44Speaker 1: I don't guarantee a success. When's Van Roten coming back?
- 43:47Speaker 1: He's on IR. And I mean, he's probably one of
- 43:49Speaker 1: the ones that you're going to have to consider. Do we,
- 43:52Speaker 1: you know, and I mean, but I don't think so.
- 43:53Speaker 1: I mean, Ben Brown, if Ben Brown's back, I think
- 43:55Speaker 1: he was your top swing back up. Yeah, I agree
- 43:57Speaker 1: with Mike. I don't think you need Van Roten.
- 43:59Speaker 4: But I'm just saying the depth is good.
- 44:01Speaker 1: It's better. It's better at the tackle. I mean, of course,
- 44:03Speaker 1: we'll see how good it is when they have to play.
- 44:05Speaker 1: You drafted a first round guy. I mean, that's why
- 44:08Speaker 1: your depth is better at tackle. There's no doubt. Yeah.
- 44:11Speaker 4: MJ writes in, I don't know if you caught, speaking
- 44:15Speaker 4: of Akis, I don't know if you caught the comments
- 44:17Speaker 4: from Brian Hoyer and David Andrews who were discussing Akis.
- 44:21Speaker 4: using wrestling leverage concepts.
- 44:23Speaker 5: Yeah, he's got power. I can understand why Andrews and
- 44:27Speaker 5: Hoyer would talk like that. I see exactly what they're
- 44:29Speaker 5: talking about.
- 44:30Speaker 1: He's strong. So I wrote Akis' profile, of course, because
- 44:34Speaker 1: I discovered him. You invented him.
- 44:35Speaker 5: I was the first one of anyone on the beat
- 44:36Speaker 5: on him. You may have been.
- 44:39Speaker 1: But that was his head coach from high school just
- 44:41Speaker 1: saying he started off as an offensive lineman and kind
- 44:46Speaker 1: of didn't know what he was going to do, where
- 44:48Speaker 1: he wanted to play, and then got really into wrestling,
- 44:51Speaker 1: and just that all kind of brought everything together, the
- 44:54Speaker 1: use of leverage. And I think you see it a
- 44:55Speaker 1: little bit, even on that play a couple weeks ago
- 44:58Speaker 1: where he's driving Deion Dawkins back. I think that's the
- 45:02Speaker 1: things he understands. He understands how to get into guys
- 45:05Speaker 1: and get them off balance and then put them on
- 45:06Speaker 1: the ground. Let's see.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Power.
- 45:10Speaker 4: Kanaka from Tokyo, right? Professor? I guess Christian's prescription for
- 45:16Speaker 4: May's problems after the first few games was spot on.
- 45:19Speaker 4: Threatened to bench him if he screws up again. We
- 45:21Speaker 4: know Vrabel is an avid listener to P.U., so we
- 45:24Speaker 4: must have taken his advice, and it worked. Good job.
- 45:27Speaker 4: How else can you explain May's recent performances? There is
- 45:30Speaker 4: no other explanation. The truth is, Christian is an insufferable idiot. Oh,
- 45:35Speaker 4: come on. He's a self-absorbed so-called fan who expresses confidence
- 45:39Speaker 4: in his opinions as a blind man does in his
- 45:41Speaker 4: ability to judge a painting. My question is for P.U.
- 45:46Speaker 4: to use Christian's own wisdom on him. Since his tastes
- 45:49Speaker 4: are frequently wrong or unsupported, I suggest he be benched
- 45:53Speaker 4: for four weeks until he demonstrates a modicum of sound judgment.
- 45:57Speaker 4: If his next call is as inane as the previous ones,
- 46:00Speaker 4: he should ride the pine for another four weeks. That
- 46:03Speaker 4: would definitely be enjoyed by the rest of P.U.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Nation.
- 46:07Speaker 4: Tanaka from Tokyo. Bring in the heat.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Off the top rope.
- 46:10Speaker 5: He's coming hard.
- 46:12Speaker 4: Bring in the heat. Let's see. Bill from Albuquerque, who's
- 46:19Speaker 4: stuck in Pittsburgh, wants to know, whatever happened to Antonio Gibson?
- 46:23Speaker 4: Is he available? He was pretty good last year. I
- 46:26Speaker 4: think he single-handedly won the first Miami game. Was his
- 46:30Speaker 4: injury so bad that he's not an option? They let
- 46:32Speaker 4: him go.
- 46:33Speaker 1: They released him. They released him.
- 46:36Speaker 5: Early in the offseason.
- 46:37Speaker 4: Did he get picked up? I don't know.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Mike's looking.
- 46:42Speaker 4: It up.
- 46:42Speaker 1: This is wrong. This is all wrong. No, I don't
- 46:46Speaker 1: think so. This is, no. Okay. Let's see.
- 46:51Speaker 4: Trent and Sylvan Lake. Everyone keeps saying Dobbs is playing
- 46:54Speaker 4: a different role than he's equipped to play. Thought his
- 46:57Speaker 4: role as receiver was to catch the ball. Not sure
- 47:00Speaker 4: who's more of a letdown, Dobbs or Sanu. Hopefully Dobbs
- 47:04Speaker 4: can get his issues solved and become a reliable option
- 47:07Speaker 4: for the team. I'm not down on that. Everyone's down
- 47:11Speaker 4: on Dobbs. He had a good game two games ago.
- 47:15Speaker 4: Last game he had a catch and, you know, didn't
- 47:17Speaker 4: come up with a couple balls that maybe he should have.
- 47:21Speaker 4: But he was, I don't know, was he playing the A.J.
- 47:25Speaker 4: Brown role? And I don't know. We need Evan to
- 47:27Speaker 4: tell us that.
- 47:28Speaker 5: I thought a little bit in the last game he
- 47:30Speaker 5: was more on the outside running vertical. I mean, it
- 47:33Speaker 5: sent him deep on a couple of occasions. Drew passed
- 47:36Speaker 5: interference calls twice on deep balls.
- 47:38Speaker 4: Yeah, so in the Bills game when, you know, when–
- 47:44Speaker 4: Hollins went down. Chisholm came in for Hollins and Dobbs
- 47:48Speaker 4: was still running those inside, you know, medium routes. So
- 47:54Speaker 4: in last game, did they flip the Chisholm? So, but
- 47:57Speaker 4: I take the.
- 47:58Speaker 5: But I would also say in the Buffalo game, he
- 48:01Speaker 5: spent most of the game inside and then Hollins went
- 48:05Speaker 5: out and they put them on the outside. And that
- 48:06Speaker 5: was one that he didn't come up with down the
- 48:08Speaker 5: sideline late in the game. The next play was the
- 48:10Speaker 5: one to Chisholm.
- 48:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:12Speaker 5: It might not have been the next play. It might
- 48:14Speaker 5: have been a couple of plays later, but they tried
- 48:16Speaker 5: a deep ball to Dobbs in that game on that drive,
- 48:19Speaker 5: and it was a similar kind of route that Chisholm
- 48:22Speaker 5: had just run that eventually ran for the game-winning touchdown,
- 48:26Speaker 5: only it was a little bit closer to the end zone.
- 48:29Speaker 1: I'm willing to wait and see how he fits back
- 48:31Speaker 1: in with A.J. Brown. Those are complementary players to me,
- 48:34Speaker 1: and I think that it could work. My concern is
- 48:37Speaker 1: that he's going to be a rollercoaster player, and you're
- 48:40Speaker 1: never going to quite know what you're going to get
- 48:42Speaker 1: week to week and pass to pass. And I was
- 48:45Speaker 1: just thinking about like, how would Tom Brady deal with
- 48:47Speaker 1: that kind of player? You know, like he got, I
- 48:49Speaker 1: think he gets sick of the inconsistency and then he
- 48:51Speaker 1: would stop throwing.
- 48:52Speaker 5: That all depends on his assignments.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Is he, is he where he's supposed to be? No.
- 48:57Speaker 1: And he's just not.
- 48:58Speaker 5: Consistently making the catch or physical things. He's not, but
- 49:02Speaker 5: mentally he's in the right place.
- 49:03Speaker 1: He's executing. He's just not catching them. Right. And I,
- 49:05Speaker 1: and I listen, I agree.
- 49:06Speaker 5: I think Dobbs has been disappointing, you know, over the
- 49:09Speaker 5: balance of the five games. I think it's been a
- 49:11Speaker 5: little bit of a disappointment. I think it's a little
- 49:13Speaker 5: bit overblown because the very first thing that everybody saw
- 49:16Speaker 5: was a hellacious drop.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:18Speaker 5: And I think everybody is, is remembering that. yep I
- 49:20Speaker 5: don't think you win the Buffalo game without Dobbs I
- 49:23Speaker 5: think the fourth down conversions and the touchdowns I don't
- 49:26Speaker 5: think you win that game without yeah without him um
- 49:30Speaker 5: he needs to be better I think he had opportunities
- 49:33Speaker 5: to make plays in this game and he didn't He
- 49:35Speaker 5: needs to more consistently catch the ball.
- 49:37Speaker 1: I agree with the emailer.
- 49:39Speaker 4: Colby from Galveston, Texas. My wife, my buddy, a Packers fan,
- 49:43Speaker 4: and I are going to the Packers game in a
- 49:45Speaker 4: few weeks. I got a cousin that's going to BC,
- 49:47Speaker 4: so we're going to visit her and check out a
- 49:49Speaker 4: hockey game. Nice. Can you give us some hole-in-the-wall recommendations
- 49:53Speaker 4: for bars and restaurants around Boston?
- 49:56Speaker 2: Oh, jeez.
- 49:56Speaker 1: That's some past my prime on that one. Marianne's? You
- 50:01Speaker 1: don't want to be going there. It's still open. I
- 50:04Speaker 1: don't even know.
- 50:05Speaker 4: Well, Pino's Pizza in Cleveland Circle used to have the
- 50:08Speaker 4: best steak and cheese in the area.
- 50:09Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 50:10Speaker 4: Back in the day.
- 50:10Speaker 1: I know.
- 50:11Speaker 4: I don't know if Pino's is still there.
- 50:12Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 50:14Speaker 4: I don't live in Boston anymore, so it's hard for
- 50:16Speaker 4: me to give you any recommendations.
- 50:17Speaker 1: We got the old guys today. You know, with Nevin
- 50:18Speaker 1: and Alex are the ones with the recs.
- 50:20Speaker 5: But even in that.
- 50:21Speaker 1: In BC. Yeah, that part of town is not like. Like,
- 50:24Speaker 1: everyone could tell you downtown. Legal seafood in Chestnut Hill.
- 50:28Speaker 4: Yeah. It's great. There you go.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Hole in the wall.
- 50:31Speaker 4: He's looking for a hole in the wall.
- 50:33Speaker 5: Just respectful to our sponsors.
- 50:34Speaker 1: One of the best chowder in New England. Come on.
- 50:37Speaker 4: You know, back in the day, BC, BU area, I
- 50:39Speaker 4: could tell you every place, but not anymore. That was
- 50:41Speaker 4: a long time ago.
- 50:42Speaker 5: I think a lot of those places are, they're going away.
- 50:47Speaker 5: And it's, I don't know if it's the schools are
- 50:49Speaker 5: trying to sort of push those guys out. The underage
- 50:51Speaker 5: drinking bars?
- 50:52Speaker 1: Is that what you mean? Well, no, not necessarily underage, but.
- 50:56Speaker 5: cheap drinking places, college bars where you could go in
- 50:59Speaker 5: and get, you know, $ 6 pitcher.
- 51:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 51:03Speaker 5: I think those places are going. And I think a
- 51:06Speaker 5: lot of college kids now, they, they just, they party
- 51:09Speaker 5: on campus, you know, frat parties and whatnot. And they're
- 51:12Speaker 5: not necessarily doing the tease pub thing that, that I
- 51:15Speaker 5: did or the dugout, you know, those are college hole
- 51:19Speaker 5: in the wall places that were awesome.
- 51:21Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Oh, we had one.
- 51:22Speaker 4: It's too expensive now?
- 51:24Speaker 1: I think. Less drinking, too. I saw something. But that's why.
- 51:27Speaker 4: The young kids don't drink the way we drink.
- 51:28Speaker 5: I don't think there's less drinking. I think there's less
- 51:31Speaker 5: spending money on drinking. They do the keg stands at
- 51:35Speaker 5: the frat party as opposed to going out to T's
- 51:39Speaker 5: Pub and having 27 Miller Lights, which may or may
- 51:42Speaker 5: not have happened in, say, 1989. No, I had a
- 51:44Speaker 5: $ 6 pitcher.
- 51:44Speaker 1: I remember a place that I used to go to.
- 51:46Speaker 1: $ 6 pitchers. I mean, that'll get you there.
- 51:47Speaker 10: Oh.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Francisco chiming in. She probably has some. Oh, OK.
- 51:54Speaker 4: Alex Francisco to the rescue.
- 51:56Speaker 5: But I definitely have heard all the stuff about the
- 51:58Speaker 5: younger generation doesn't spend the money on alcohol the way
- 52:03Speaker 5: we did.
- 52:03Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 52:04Speaker 5: And they find different ways. They find different ways to spend.
- 52:06Speaker 5: But I also know it's so much more expensive.
- 52:08Speaker 4: They don't drink like we drank.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:10Speaker 5: But I think that's why. Because it's so expensive.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Alex says Fiorella's in Newton near B.C. And she says
- 52:16Speaker 1: there's also a good cash only dive near Cleveland Circle
- 52:19Speaker 1: near the CBS. She forgets the name.
- 52:22Speaker 4: Okay.
- 52:23Speaker 1: All right.
- 52:23Speaker 4: Sorry we couldn't help you out more.
- 52:26Speaker 1: Use Yelp.
- 52:27Speaker 4: Now my patron's question is, it seems like Drake and
- 52:30Speaker 4: Josh have adapted after the first three weeks and are
- 52:33Speaker 4: hitting their stride. But do you think the other teams
- 52:37Speaker 4: will have a counterpunch later in the season, causing the
- 52:40Speaker 4: offense to look like it did in the playoffs last year?
- 52:43Speaker 1: Yes.
- 52:44Speaker 5: Some teams will be better equipped to defend them than
- 52:47Speaker 5: the Raiders were and the Bills were. I mean, the equation,
- 52:51Speaker 5: I'm not sure that's going to be this play this game,
- 52:53Speaker 5: but right.
- 52:53Speaker 1: I mean that, that, but then to the Patriots changed
- 52:56Speaker 1: the equation again with AJ Brown. Like, I mean, I
- 52:57Speaker 1: think from my perspective, I mean, it's just hard with
- 53:01Speaker 1: Drake because you can say their receivers aren't all that
- 53:04Speaker 1: dynamic right now. And you'd love to just be able
- 53:06Speaker 1: to man them up and not let them get off
- 53:08Speaker 1: of coverage. And, but Drake can run and Drake's really accurate.
- 53:11Speaker 1: So it, conventional plans are hard. I think you have
- 53:15Speaker 1: to fool him. I think you have to, and it's
- 53:16Speaker 1: kind of getting back to the break. You got to
- 53:18Speaker 1: hit him early. You got to get him off his game.
- 53:19Speaker 4: Listen, if Drake's the quarterback we think he's going to be, then,
- 53:23Speaker 4: you know, adjustments will be made. But if you're a
- 53:26Speaker 4: good quarterback, you, yeah. And then you have an answer
- 53:29Speaker 4: for it.
- 53:30Speaker 5: I think Mike touched on something I feel strongly on.
- 53:33Speaker 5: If you're defending the Patriots, you need to hit Drake
- 53:36Speaker 5: May early in the game.
- 53:37Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Get him thinking.
- 53:39Speaker 5: Can't get him comfortable.
- 53:40Speaker 1: Uncertain about the pocket.
- 53:41Speaker 5: Sooner he gets comfortable, tougher it's going to be.
- 53:45Speaker 4: Darius and Louisville, I'm a little confused why you guys
- 53:48Speaker 4: think our run defense is so bad. I thought we
- 53:50Speaker 4: looked pretty good all year beside the Jags game. All
- 53:53Speaker 4: I keep hearing is they should have run more. They
- 53:55Speaker 4: should have ran more. Well, maybe they couldn't. Maybe just
- 53:58Speaker 4: maybe our defense is pretty good. Just my opinion. I
- 54:02Speaker 4: think we are good and could be great.
- 54:05Speaker 5: James Cook averaged six yards a carry, and Mike says
- 54:08Speaker 5: that they probably, in retrospect, should have run him more
- 54:10Speaker 5: than 12 times.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you know, yeah, I think they're a
- 54:14Speaker 1: good defense, but I also, I mean, just, you know.
- 54:16Speaker 5: They've been susceptible against the run.
- 54:18Speaker 1: I'm not getting into stats, but run DVOA, they're 25th.
- 54:20Speaker 5: Yeah, they've been susceptible against the run. They shut down
- 54:23Speaker 5: the Raiders run game. They can't run against anybody. They're
- 54:26Speaker 5: 31st in the run.
- 54:27Speaker 7: Right.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Then DVOA, you know, run stop win rate, they're 25th.
- 54:30Speaker 1: I mean, you know, it's like, you look for little
- 54:33Speaker 1: flaws in your team and what's going to, what are
- 54:34Speaker 1: teams going to try to exploit?
- 54:37Speaker 4: Exploit.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Jeepers, creepers. But that's the key to me. And go
- 54:41Speaker 1: back to how do you beat Drake? Keep him off
- 54:43Speaker 1: the field. Run the ball. Control the ball. I mean,
- 54:45Speaker 1: that's the Jets thing.
- 54:46Speaker 5: I thought Seattle ran the ball reasonably well and just
- 54:48Speaker 5: weren't able to continue to do it because they lost
- 54:50Speaker 5: their quarterback and then you can't sustain drives. The only
- 54:55Speaker 5: game that I thought they were really good against the
- 54:57Speaker 5: run was the Pittsburgh game. They stopped Jalen Warren, who
- 55:00Speaker 5: has been good against other teams, but they shut down
- 55:04Speaker 5: Warren and Dowdle in that game and put it all
- 55:08Speaker 5: on Aaron Rogers. That was a stout performance by the defense.
- 55:11Speaker 5: They've been kind of leaky in the other games, the
- 55:14Speaker 5: three other games. So it was the two home games.
- 55:16Speaker 5: Their run defense has been solid. The three road games, it's,
- 55:20Speaker 5: I think, been kind of questionable.
- 55:21Speaker 1: So let's see if Brees Hall comes back this week,
- 55:23Speaker 1: and then let's see if they have Mnangai next week
- 55:26Speaker 1: with him and Swift. I think those will be pretty
- 55:28Speaker 1: good tests for the run defense.
- 55:29Speaker 5: Chicago especially. They want to run the ball. Ben Johnson
- 55:32Speaker 5: believes in running the football, and that's how they want
- 55:35Speaker 5: to play offense.
- 55:36Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 55:36Speaker 5: So you shut that running game down, and that's different.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Yep.
- 55:39Speaker 4: All right. Time for a break. When we come back,

- 57:48Speaker 4: But Kyle Williams, just admitting I was not in a
- 57:52Speaker 4: good place and this brought the joy back.
- 57:54Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 57:55Speaker 1: I mean, it's only four games. I would have think
- 57:59Speaker 1: you could hold the joy a little bit longer than that,
- 58:00Speaker 1: but hopefully this gets them back on track and See
- 58:03Speaker 1: what happens if A.J. Brown comes back this week. But
- 58:05Speaker 1: I would assume he's going to get maybe a couple
- 58:06Speaker 1: more opportunities unless A.J. Brown's 100 percent back.
- 58:09Speaker 4: And then it just look, he's got a very specific
- 58:11Speaker 4: skill and you've got to use it. At least you
- 58:15Speaker 4: have the other team has to think that you're going
- 58:17Speaker 4: to use it because he can beat you.
- 58:20Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 58:22Speaker 2: Troy, just, you know, we're talking with Kyle Williams just quickly.
- 58:24Speaker 10: Mm hmm.
- 58:26Speaker 5: I feel comfortable saying this in front of you because
- 58:28Speaker 5: you're not one of those guys that felt like a
- 58:29Speaker 5: wide receiver answer. You know, you struggled for a couple
- 58:31Speaker 5: of weeks and all of a sudden, you know, you
- 58:32Speaker 5: got to get the joy back.
- 58:33Speaker 1: What is it like managing a wide receiver room?
- 58:36Speaker 3: Well, you have to manage a lot of different personalities.
- 58:39Speaker 3: And a lot of them are a lot of times
- 58:42Speaker 3: a lot of times at that position. A lot of
- 58:44Speaker 3: those personalities are diverse, you know, and and sometimes it's difficult. Sometimes,
- 58:49Speaker 3: you know, it's not that you get a guy. You
- 58:51Speaker 3: get a guy like Chisholm. You get a guy like
- 58:53Speaker 3: Jacoby Myers. You get a guy that's just just easy.
- 58:56Speaker 3: Love football.
- 58:57Speaker 2: Easy to coach. Do whatever you ask him to do.
- 58:59Speaker 2: No backtalk. No sassiness.
- 59:01Speaker 1: None of that stuff.
- 59:02Speaker 3: But you get a lot of different personalities in that room,
- 59:06Speaker 3: and you have to be able to manage them. You
- 59:08Speaker 3: have to know how to talk to them. You have
- 59:10Speaker 3: to know how to coach them, how they want to be,
- 59:11Speaker 3: how do they learn, all that stuff. And And when
- 59:15Speaker 3: you're getting on them, you've got to know exactly what
- 59:19Speaker 3: to say and how to get it through to them
- 59:21Speaker 3: without destroying their confidence any more than what it already is,
- 59:25Speaker 3: which can be difficult sometimes. Because a lot of times
- 59:28Speaker 3: you get some coaches, they want to go after everybody
- 59:30Speaker 3: the same way. And a lot of times you can't
- 59:32Speaker 3: get through to some people that way.
- 59:35Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
- 59:36Speaker 3: You're screaming and yelling at them. So you've got to
- 59:38Speaker 3: just use a different tactic sometimes. If you're comfortable off sharing,
- 59:41Speaker 3: give us an example of that. Dealing with Nakio Harry.
- 59:46Speaker 3: a guy who didn't really love football, you know, and
- 59:51Speaker 3: trying to get through to him about being here, how
- 59:53Speaker 3: important it was to be here in the offseason and
- 59:55Speaker 3: those kinds of things, and then being a part of
- 59:57Speaker 3: the team and developing as a teammate and bonding with
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: your team. He just never really got it, and I
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: could never really get through to him, you know, no
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: matter how I communicated with him. Like, he just didn't
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: have that love of football in him, you know, and
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: he and Jacoby Myers came in the same year, and
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: they couldn't be any more different.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: Than what they are.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: Like, you know, I would have the players like Jacoby
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: talk to your guy, you know, like, you know, whatever,
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: because I knew I could trust him to go have
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: that conversation with Nikhil, and he would try to have it, and, like,
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: he just wasn't listening. But I got that same conversation
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: with Jacoby. I mean, I can do whatever.
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: I can cuss.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: I can whatever. I can yell, scream, and he just
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: responds the same way all the time. So, yeah.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: Well, listen, even Randy Moss, we all love Randy Moss,
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: but he was a Pied Piper, and guys would follow him.
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: And I know... Tom Brady spent a lot of time
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: with Randy Moss, like, making sure that everything was doing
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: the way that Belichick wanted it done. And, you know,
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: that could have gone the other way. And eventually it did.
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: You know, he wanted out.
- 1:01:03Speaker 10: But.
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: These guys, they can be a handful. Terrell Owens and
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: Chad Ochocinco back in his day. Antonio Brown.
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: Another guy, another diva receiver. Extremely talented guy, Antonio Brown.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: Had him for two weeks. Difficult at first, but then
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: he got to respect me because I was truthful with
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: him and honest with him. And I'm like, look, you're
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: like everybody else in this room. You're not going to
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: bring your cell phone in this meeting. You're not going
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: to do that.
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: Come on, coach.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: I'm a grown man. Come on, I'm a grown man.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: I said, well, all the rest of these men in
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: here are grown, and their phones are outside. So just
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: put your phone outside the door, and you can get
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: it when we're done with the meeting. And then from
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: that point on, he had a different respect for me.
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: Even when he came back here with Tampa, he came
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: and found me and gave me some daps.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: Hey, what's up, coach?
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: How you doing, man? But he always had a different
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: respect for me. And you remember Bethel Johnson?
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: I remember him famously saying, the more someone tells me
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: what to do, the more I don't want to do it.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: And that was him.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: He literally said that. And I saw him in Dallas
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: three years ago, I think, we played down there. some
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: three or four years ago and he came by the
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: hotel and he and I had in the hotel like
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: a little brunch or whatever dinner or whatever and he
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: like apologized for everything that he had did and he
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: said I should have listened I should have listened to
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: you guys like David Patton myself Dion was on the
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: team at the time so he just didn't know he
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: had all the tools to be a 10, 15-year player
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: in this league. He just didn't appreciate them and didn't
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: appreciate the guys that he had around him, how good
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: of a group we had around him, and he just
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: didn't listen.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: So he apologized for all that stuff.
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: Too late smart, they say.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: I remember that, what you're talking about with Petal Johnson.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: The more someone tells me what to do, the less
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: I want to do it.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: The less he wants to do it. Wide receivers are
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: some interesting characters. They're some interesting characters. I mean, they
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: got a lot of personalities. You know, you can see Mac.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: Mac got all the bling, whatever, the gear and no
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: shoes and, you know, and.
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: But Mac is odd, but he is a total team player.
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: That's why McDaniels loves him. He'd do whatever he asked
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: him to do. He's been one of my favorite players
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: before he even got to New England. I just thought
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: he did everything that his football team asked him to do.
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: Special teams. He'd come in and make a big play
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: for you on offense. I mean, is he Randy Moss? No,
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: but he's a good, solid football player for your team,
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: and he can play a lot of different things, a
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: lot of different positions for you. Just let him wear
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: his bare feet.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: Just let him do that.

- 1:04:20Speaker 1: in history. Long-term deal? You think he plays out the franchise?
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: I know, I think he gets a long-term deal.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that'd be great. Open up some space.
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: Depends on your definition of greatness. Great to tie up
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: two guards long term mood today. You know what I'm
- 1:04:36Speaker 5: searching for?
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Working at home is really getting to him.
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: I'm searching for the move that Deuce doesn't like. That's
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: my goal.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: I want a move.
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: That Deuce is not on board with.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: I think he's completely bought in.
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: He's bought into Belichick. You have earned Paul's bullseye.
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: He's in the crosshairs.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: He's going to like every traffic.
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: I don't get to yell at him every day like
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: we usually do. We just do radio shows now.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: I will have to admit, after seeing Brady and a
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: lot of those photoshopped buck things i'm kind of like
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: yeah good luck.
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: Well we knew that right i mean you already knew
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: that good luck i'm just admitting it you pushed him

- 1:05:20Speaker 4: is the hotline podcast at patrons.com is the email address
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: we're talking about the jets kind of like Yeah.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: It's been good talk about it.
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: Team building.
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: So we could stay on the Jets.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: And I agree with that.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: I'm not saying.
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: I'm not criticizing or anything, but I think a lot
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: of the luster of Jets week is gone.
- 1:05:40Speaker 9: You know?
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: It's not like it used to be.
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: Well, I haven't really had any luster for Jets week
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: since Rex Ryan left. Because that's the last time they
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: were any good.
- 1:05:48Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: I know. I mean, it's more a feeling of like,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: don't mess this one up and don't get hurt. Just
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: get a win and move on.
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: You always sort of tease me and you... You go
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: the Andy Hart ridiculous route. I like games like the
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: Bills in Seattle as opposed to games like the Raiders
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: in Jacksonville. I learned nothing in those games. I learned
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: something in a Bills game where... both teams are sort
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: of trading punches and you gotta go, you gotta execute
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: game management's important clock. Um, who comes up with big
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: plays when the game's on the line and who wins,
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: you know, and I, and I intentionally picked a win
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: in a loss for both situations. The Seattle game was similar.
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: Like the clock and the execution was important in that
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: game because both teams were going back and forth.
- 1:06:39Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: I don't learn much losing 35 to six or winning
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: 45 to 17. Um, I obviously would rather win 45-17
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: than lose 35-6, but with the Jets, they haven't really
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: had the ability to punch back in at least a decade.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: What have they beaten them, like three times? Right, since
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: the Belichick loss. Did they lose to them... It was
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: the last loss to Belichick in 24. And then the
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: Thursday night game at the Mayo year, they lost.
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: Is that the last time they lost to them?
- 1:07:15Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: So they just really haven't been able to punch you back.
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: But I'll be fair, though, to the Jets. I don't
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: want to make it look like we're just being all
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: Homer Central here. I had a big thing last week
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: saying the Patriots beat the Raiders. Bills go out to L.A.
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: and lose to the Rams. The Patriots could be in
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: first place. Well, you lose to the Jets and you're
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: in third.
- 1:07:38Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: So I've got to be fair about it and create
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: all different scenarios.
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: All the more reason why we're going to win.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, that's how I feel.
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: Let's go to the hotline, 855-PATS-500. Dave's in Florida. What's up, Dave?
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Hey, guys. How's it going?
- 1:07:55Speaker 10: Good.
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: Yeah, so I....
- 1:08:00Speaker 13: I kind of agree with Paul a little bit with
- 1:08:03Speaker 13: the notion that maybe Jets haven't had a luster in
- 1:08:08Speaker 13: a long time, mostly because we've beaten them so many times.
- 1:08:12Speaker 13: But at the same time, Paul, do you really not
- 1:08:14Speaker 13: enjoy games like the Raiders, like 45-17, like blowouts like that?
- 1:08:18Speaker 13: Some people like me and Fred love to watch our
- 1:08:20Speaker 13: team blow out another team, you know?
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: Yeah, and like I said, I would much rather win,
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: you know.
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: Then win a blowout, then lose a blowout. But no,
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: I didn't find a whole lot to watch in the
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: Jacksonville game or the Raiders game. Whereas the Buffalo game,
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: and Mike will tell you, I was riveted. I'm riveted
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: the whole game because every play matters.
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: We're fans.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: He's not. But I lost interest.
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: He wants us to be miserable.
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: No, like I said, the Buffalo game to me was riveting.
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: Riveting, but not from a fan standpoint.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: Oh, yes.
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: From a fan standpoint, that game was riveting. It was
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: back and forth.
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: Who were you rooting for?
- 1:08:59Speaker 5: The Patriots. Like, how could you not? Like, they won
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: the game. See, I said this is why I prefaced
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: the whole thing. He's going to take it to an
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: Andy absurd level and not understand the difference between a
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: game that was painfully over one drive into the game
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: on Sunday. I lost interest in that game one series
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: into the game.
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: But if your team is the one that's running away
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: with it.
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: That's better than the other way where the Jacksonville game
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: was over like a quarter and a half into the game.
- 1:09:25Speaker 9: That was no fun either.
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: You're enjoying every moment of it. That's my point. You're
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: enjoying every moment of it.
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: I enjoy a lot more when the other team has
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: the ability to make it a game.
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: Well, define enjoy.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Enjoy.
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: Like, it's fun to watch. That's fun to watch to me.
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: Yes, but I also think blowing out the other team
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: is fun to watch, too, for me.
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: I guess I just don't learn much in those games.
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: I'm not there to learn. I just want to watch
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: my team win.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: Yeah. They beat Buffalo. They won.
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Like, why does one of them matter more to you?
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: I didn't say it mattered more. Didn't we, though? What?
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: What do you got, Dave?
- 1:10:07Speaker 13: The question I have is about A.J.
- 1:10:08Speaker 9: Brown.
- 1:10:08Speaker 13: And I missed the first part of the show, so
- 1:10:10Speaker 13: I'm not sure if you.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Covered this part.
- 1:10:12Speaker 13: But if you were Mike Braybill and A.J. Brown came
- 1:10:14Speaker 13: up to you and said, I'm ready to play this week,
- 1:10:16Speaker 13: are you resting him maybe this week and maybe give
- 1:10:19Speaker 13: him another week of rest? Or are you putting him
- 1:10:22Speaker 13: in there? And if you do put him in there,
- 1:10:23Speaker 13: are you giving him some volume? Or are you maybe
- 1:10:25Speaker 13: just putting him out there sort of not quite like
- 1:10:27Speaker 13: a decoy, but sort of Someone that can be out
- 1:10:30Speaker 13: there to open up some opportunities for Romeo, Dada, and Chisholm,
- 1:10:33Speaker 13: that kind of thing.
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: If my training staff says he is good to go.
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: Then he's going. If they say he could go, but
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: he could use another week, then he's going to get
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: another week.
- 1:10:45Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: There are medical decisions and football decisions.
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: Thanks, Dave.
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: And they're not necessarily the same.
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: But like I said, if he's 100% and my medical
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: people say he's 100%, the quicker he gets in and gets,
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: you know, because he's still got to work with Drake here.
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: I mean, we haven't figured that out yet.
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: And you haven't figured out what your offense looks like
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: with all your pieces in it.
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: So I want him in as soon as he can,
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: as long as there's no risk of re-injuring or setbacks
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: or anything like that. Anything else that would happen would
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: be brand new.
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: I don't want to rush him back, but I agree
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: with you.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: I mean, this is a little bit of, I don't
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: know if it's unique, but this is a specific injury
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: that can linger and is a weird one. It's not
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: like as simple as his bone broke, it is healed,
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: he is ready. You know, this is like, is there
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: another injury that's as bizarre as a high ankle sprain?
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: Like they're always... There's a surgery for it. You don't
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: need surgery.
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: You never hear people say, oh, it was a low
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: ankle spray.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I think those are, I know, but these, yeah,
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: you've had the Gronkowski one. I mean, it's just, I
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: wouldn't rush him back on this. I would be a
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: little bit more precautious with this injury just because I
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: do think the risk of kind of screwing it up
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: again and setting him back. Don't try to win this
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: battle to lose the war.
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: Like I said, if he is 100% clear, then get
- 1:11:57Speaker 4: him out there.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: Because we need to work on this offense.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. No.
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: Eldred's in North Carolina. What's up, Eldred?
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: Oh, back on the road.
- 1:12:09Speaker 9: How y'all doing?
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:12:11Speaker 8: Hey, you had a caller yesterday.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: We did.
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: Okay, bro.
- 1:12:16Speaker 12: I'm going to take my lumps.
- 1:12:17Speaker 8: I did want to have some first.
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: And then what you call? Because, like I said, I
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: saw me in North Carolina.
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: And I probably.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: Wouldn't change it back.
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: But what I'm.
- 1:12:30Speaker 9: Worried about is he got that coverage for two games.
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: I hope he do the rest of the game and just.
- 1:12:35Speaker 9: Get that dog in the fight. That's all I want.
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: You know, but he's a laid back dude. You know,
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: he's just laid back.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Yeah. And he does.
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: I just want to see that.
- 1:12:44Speaker 13: And my question is, ain't y'all scared of Geno being
- 1:12:47Speaker 13: the Patriot killer?
- 1:12:48Speaker 9: He killed him with Seattle and he.
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: Killed him with the Raiders. Right.
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: That's Mike's big fear.
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: We talked about that at the beginning of the show.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Yeah. I didn't get to hear that.
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: He's thrown for like 350 in the last two times.
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: We start at 11 now, Eldred, not at noon.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: Come on, Eldred.
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I know, I know.
- 1:13:05Speaker 8: Had a delivery at 11, bro.
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: Good job.
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: Good job, E. Thank you. Appreciate it.
- 1:13:10Speaker 13: Thank you.
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: Alienating the regulars. Yep.
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: Ben in Manhattan writes in, Thank you for all the
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: great shows. Fred, your gambling references kill me, but they're
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: also dangerous because as a non-gambler, they're genuinely all that
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: I know, and I'm.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: Not sure that's a good thing.
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: I get to see Ben the first time, you know,
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: he's working with someone to place a bet. Hey, I
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: want to do an unprotected sex bet. And the guy
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: looks at him, are you talking about? And Fred told
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: me about it.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: You know what's great?
- 1:13:42Speaker 5: You know what's great about that? The game that you
- 1:13:45Speaker 5: said was an unprotected sex game was the Philadelphia Jacksonville game.
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: And if there was a definition of an unprotected sex game,
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: that was a risky bet.
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: That was a risky bet.
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: And then if you made the wrong one, you came away,
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: you know, regretting it for a long time. My question
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: is on the run defense. I think it's a bit
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: under-discussed as a weak point of this team that can
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: hurt them in close games. In particular, it seems like
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: we're consistently vulnerable to rushes between the tackles, especially in
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: the A-gaps. I think Vrabel's defense is supposed to work
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: differently from the old Patriots philosophy with more penetration than
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: two gapping nose tackles. But I don't really get it.
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: Call the ball knowers, talk... Can the ball knowers talk
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: about how the defense is supposed to stop the run?
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: Is there a personnel hole at nose tackle or other
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: spots currently that make this weaker than it should be?
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: It's run fits. It's called run fits. Go ahead, Mike.
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: You're the defense guy. No, I mean, they still have
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: a nose tackle and Corey Durden's playing that position, but
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: I think he's a little bit small than maybe the
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: ideal position, but it's definitely a different defensive philosophy i
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: don't i wouldn't say that they are a penetrating defense
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: every single snap there's still elements of two gapping that
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: that happen on various plays um but it's not that
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: you know and i think part of it too is
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: that the old defensive systems were so simple it was
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: you know you go back to the mid-2000s it's all
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: three four and nickel that's it like you know your
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: strong side linebacker comes out and you bring in your
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: your slot cornerback and that was as simple as it
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: gets and now it's All nickel, mostly that's nickels, the
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: new base, which, I mean, you're saying that in, like, 2010. Right.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: So it's definitely different. I do just enjoy the overall
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: aggressiveness of the blitzing. And, you know, I think the
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: kind of Matt Patricia years, they were a little bit more.
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: It is different, though, because if you do it wrong,
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: you're going to get, you know, scorched up the middle.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, they're good at disguising. I think Zach
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: Kor is good at spinning the dial and, you know,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: maybe sending a lot of pressure early in the game
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: and then using that, for the rest of the game
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: as a threat to get a quarterback off his game.
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: And they lost Tonga. They don't really have that true
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: nose tackle anymore. I always said that if Vince Wilfork
- 1:16:00Speaker 4: was more in a traditional... penetrating 4-3 or whatever. He
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: would be a Canton.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: He was like a rolling ball. He'd be a Canton
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: Hall of Famer.
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: But he was playing that zero technique type of thing.
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: And that limits a guy. You don't get the numbers.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean, and Wilfork was special as, you know,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: 2011 and famously, like, towards the end, they're moving him
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: all over the place. It wasn't just as simple as...
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: But again, going back to when they were just running
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: 3-4 and nickel, like, he's the nose tackle. And Seymour
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: and Ty Warren were with him. But I'm really impressed
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: with just the overall... defensive coordination and the level they've
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: started off with this year where they're throwing a lot
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: of different stuff. Again, going back to everybody seems to
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: be on the same page, whether it's Chucky Trees and
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: Kendall Vildor out there or whatever. So I give the
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: defensive staff a lot of credit because I don't think
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: that they are the most talented, naturally talented defense, but
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: I think they play really well together. And I think
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Robert Spillane is the guy in the middle keeping everybody
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: Connected and knowing what they're doing. They're a good defense.
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: I like Mike's point about the personnel changes and the stylistic.
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: Because you are in nickel all the time now. And
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: that's not just like a personnel group. It's the people
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: that you have on the field. So instead of monsters
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: like Ted Johnson and Bruschi and Pfeiffer and Vrabel. You
- 1:17:24Speaker 5: now have Robert Spillane and Christian Ellis who are much
- 1:17:27Speaker 5: smaller than those guys. Now, the difference is nowadays you
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: have to be smaller and faster to be able to
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: compete with these offenses that are stretching you. And that
- 1:17:40Speaker 5: might make you a little susceptible to a power running game.
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: You're not anywhere near as big up front in the
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: front seven as you were 25 years ago. Now, I
- 1:17:49Speaker 5: would say that most teams look at it and say... okay,
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: you want to run the ball against us?
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: Sure, go ahead.
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: You can run for 125 yards. If you can't throw
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: and score, it's not going to matter. Now, Chicago is
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: a rare team. Detroit is a rare team. Those two games,
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: I'll be curious to see how it looks because those
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: are two teams that want to run the ball and
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: they score a lot of points. When their offenses are clicking,
- 1:18:17Speaker 5: those teams run the ball and put up a lot
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: of points. So you can't. I think the Jets want
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: to run the ball and try to win this game
- 1:18:24Speaker 5: 17-13 or something like that.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. I would say good luck. Yeah, good luck.
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: Good luck trying to win the game that way. I
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: don't think you're going to be able to keep the
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: Patriots to 13 points.
- 1:18:35Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: Part of it, too, is like, you know, Juwan Bentley.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: I mean, they released him last year.
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: Remember that?
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: Jelani Tavai played a year. Yeah. Those were the off-the-ball
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: linebackers under the Belichick system, and they're smaller. I think
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: this fits better for the modern game in my eye,
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: and I wonder if that was part of the trend
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: that hurt them near the end, where they were a
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: little bit behind the times. They were a little bit
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: too big and didn't run quite as well, you know? Right.
- 1:18:59Speaker 5: And, and I don't want to just say like, I
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: agree with everything Mike is saying. I like this style better.
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: I like being aggressive defensively. I don't want to sit
- 1:19:07Speaker 5: back and just hope the other team makes a mistake.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: And all that.
- 1:19:10Speaker 5: And I'm not telling you that it's infallible. We all
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: watched the Super Bowl and we all saw why Seattle
- 1:19:16Speaker 5: was able to win the game. They dominated the line
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: of scrimmage and Kenneth Walker was unstoppable. So I'm not
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: telling you you can't win games doing it that way.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: But I would argue your old argument with me when
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: we bickered about how lopsided the Super Bowl was. Even
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: though the game was non-competitive... It was a play away
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: from getting competitive because when you run the ball, you
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: don't generally score as many points as it looks like
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: you should. Yeah.
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: Because if you can't complete the passes and Darnold was
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: terrible in that game, they couldn't complete the passes. They
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: weren't scoring as many points as they should have based
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: on how much success they were having offensively. That's why
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: I think the way that Vrabel and Zach core go
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: about defense.
- 1:19:59Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: We might give up some yards in between the tackles
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: here and there. Jacksonville game, why did they score 35 points?
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: Why did they score, I'll.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: Say, 28?
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: Because they had a pick that set it up inside
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: the five. Because Trevor Lawrence threw the ball into the
- 1:20:14Speaker 5: end zone.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: And I agree.
- 1:20:18Speaker 5: They ran the ball really well that day, Jacksonville. But
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: the difference to me was in the red zone, they
- 1:20:24Speaker 5: were five for five because Trevor Lawrence was completing passes
- 1:20:28Speaker 5: in the end zone.
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: Todd and Garner, kind of on the same subject here.
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: Does Rabel approach the D like Belichick and try to
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: take away the opponent's best weapons?
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:20:43Speaker 4: I would say no.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: It didn't look like it last week.
- 1:20:45Speaker 5: No, they singled him a lot.
- 1:20:47Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:20:47Speaker 5: Because they knew that that wasn't going to be enough
- 1:20:50Speaker 5: to beat him.
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: Also, doesn't Paul say run on your own time, passing
- 1:20:53Speaker 4: wins games? So having teams run on you is better
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: than letting them pass.
- 1:20:57Speaker 5: I agree, Todd.
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: That's the whole point.
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: I'm with you, Todd. He just made it right off
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: the bat when they signed Milton Williams to that big deal.
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: I think that was kind of a signal. And then
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: bringing in Spillane to really run. Those two moves to
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: me right out of the gate indicated success. What direction
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: they were headed.
- 1:21:12Speaker 5: And, again, because I don't want this thrown back in
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: my face, like, well, blah. Like, there can definitely be
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: a possibility of an individual week here or there. And
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: it could happen Sunday.
- 1:21:25Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: Brees Hall runs for, you know, 24 carries for 135
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: yards and two touchdowns, and the Patriots get upset.
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 1:21:33Speaker 5: I'll take my chances that that's not going to happen
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: week after week.
- 1:21:36Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: But I'm just saying like, I'm going to take my chances.
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: That's not going to happen week after week after week.
- 1:21:41Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: I think, I think that that absolutely could happen, you know, on,
- 1:21:47Speaker 5: in a game or two, but I don't think you're
- 1:21:49Speaker 5: going to, especially when you have.
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: The quarterback that you have. And I think, you know
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: what I mean? Like that colors everything where it's like, well,
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: he's got to put up points, you know, as long
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: as we protect him, we're probably going to score some points.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: Whereas like when you had Mac, Like, God, if they
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: get a lead on us, it's going to be a struggle.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: We're not going to be able to run the ball.
- 1:22:06Speaker 5: And if the Jets are going to win, sorry, Freddie,
- 1:22:08Speaker 5: they're going to have to have a good game from
- 1:22:10Speaker 5: Geno Smith, too. Because they can run the ball, but
- 1:22:14Speaker 5: you need to score the points. And that, to me,
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: is what would worry me about Chicago and Detroit. Those
- 1:22:20Speaker 5: two teams can run the ball, but they can also score.
- 1:22:23Speaker 5: The Jets can't score.
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: Tell you what Jameer gives, man.
- 1:22:27Speaker 4: Nick in Ohio says, I'm on Paul's side. I enjoy
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: the blowouts, but I enjoy watching our young team develop
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: and learn from the tight games more. The more games
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: that are tough become a quicker learning experience for Drake
- 1:22:38Speaker 4: and our young team. I may be too analytical, but
- 1:22:40Speaker 4: that's how I look at the comeback wins. The more
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: they have to deal with adversity, the better they will develop.
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: Just blow out the Bills, Jets, and Finns every year.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: Listen.
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: Let's just say you have two seasons. Each one of them,
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: you end up 14-3. One season, you're blowing teams out
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: left and right. The other season, it was a struggle
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: to get to 14-3. Which would you rather have as
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: a fan?
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: The struggle. Why?
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: Wouldn't you want to be the team that blows out everybody?
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: No, that just tells me you played teams that weren't
- 1:23:14Speaker 5: very good.
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: You're saying that.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: If they go 14-3 this year, I think it would
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: be a hell of a lot more impressive than going
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: 14-3 was last year. I didn't say that.
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: You just interjected that. Let's say that it's.
- 1:23:27Speaker 5: Okay, so you're saying that they play these death struggles
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: with terrible teams?
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: No, let's just say it's an average NFL season. Neither good,
- 1:23:37Speaker 4: really hard, or really easy.
- 1:23:38Speaker 5: That's much more entertaining. Especially if I'm winning the same.
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: I want to blow everybody. I want to be dominant.
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: I want to take no prisoners.
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: I'm not telling you you're wrong. I'm not telling you how.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: You should feel.
- 1:23:49Speaker 4: I'm just saying that I'm a fan. You're not.
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: I am a fan. I'm a fan of the game.
- 1:23:54Speaker 4: You're in it for the nuance.
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: No, I want my team to win. But I don't
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: want it to be easy. I want it to be competitive.
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: Why?
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: Because that's more fun to watch. Would you rather watch
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: 2003 again or 2007, just regular season?
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: Well, do I know the outcome?
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: I mean, is that an okay call?
- 1:24:09Speaker 4: If I know that I'm going to win a Super
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: Bowl in 03 and have the ultimate heartbreak in 07.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: Well, right. We'll take that out of it, though. I mean,
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: maybe I'm wrong, but... I feel like 0-3, they were
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: close games. And I know they were dominant and there
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: were nods going on at 7-0. But, like, that felt
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: a lot of close games that year in 0-7. But
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: they weren't really close. Yeah.
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: Only because the offense wasn't, you know, putting up with it.
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: What year are we talking about?
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: I said 0-3. Once they got to two scores, it
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: was over.
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: Regardless of when that happened.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: I like your theory. I'll tell you.
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: But, no, here's this. I'm going to be a little
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: hypocritical about 0-7.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:43Speaker 5: Because they did have a lot of blowout wins. But
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: I think they blew out a lot of really good teams.
- 1:24:50Speaker 5: They didn't blow out the Titans, the Saints, and the Browns.
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: Like last year's Patriots did.
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: But you're changing the argument here. No, but Mike is asking,
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: which one would you rather... There was a thorough entertainment
- 1:25:02Speaker 5: value in 07, even though they weren't overly competitive games.
- 1:25:05Speaker 5: I did like it better at the end when the
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: games were more competitive and the other team pushed back.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: Oh, I didn't.
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: I wanted blowouts throughout.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:25:14Speaker 5: You don't want it to be hard. You want it
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: to be easy. You want it to be given to you.
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: I like to earn it.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: You don't do anything. You just sit in your ass
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: and watch. I want my team to win.
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: Blow doors on the rest of the league and be dominant.
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: I want every, every other fan base to be miserable before, during,
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: and after we play them.
- 1:25:34Speaker 5: That's, but that's okay.
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: Like that.
- 1:25:36Speaker 5: I don't think you're wrong. That's how you feel. I,
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: I like to earn it. Like I, I like my team.
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: To be tested.
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: I think I'm with Paul Fred.
- 1:25:43Speaker 5: I think it's more entertaining to watch a game where
- 1:25:46Speaker 5: both teams are playing well. Last week I was like,
- 1:25:47Speaker 5: this is taking forever.
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: Like, Like, which Super Bowl was better to watch? Okay,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: but we're working.
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: Like, which Super Bowl was better to watch? When the
- 1:25:57Speaker 5: Rams didn't sniff a point and you beat them 13-3?
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: Or the Seattle Super Bowl that is haymakers back and
- 1:26:03Speaker 5: forth the whole game? Give me the Seattle game. It
- 1:26:05Speaker 5: was one of the greatest football games I ever watched.
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: Like the Kansas City AFC Championship game. Or, you know,
- 1:26:12Speaker 5: Ty Law picking off 17 Peyton Manning passes in a blowout.
- 1:26:15Speaker 5: Give me the Kansas City game every day of the week.
- 1:26:18Speaker 5: That's fun to me. The other team has a chance too.
- 1:26:22Speaker 5: I'm not playing my homecoming opponent this week. I get
- 1:26:26Speaker 5: nothing out of that. It's great that we won, but
- 1:26:30Speaker 5: I would much rather beat Buffalo the way they beat
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: Buffalo than the way the Raiders came in here and
- 1:26:35Speaker 5: just rolled over for them.
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: I need some heart palpitations.
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: I like that.
- 1:26:38Speaker 5: I like some competition.
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: When I'm watching other teams, I'm with Paul. I want
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: to have a good game back and forth. But when
- 1:26:46Speaker 4: my team's playing... I want to kick your ass up
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: and down the field.
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: If I was playing, that's how I would feel. But
- 1:26:53Speaker 5: if I'm watching, I want to be entertained. I kind
- 1:26:55Speaker 5: of feel like I'm out there with it. I don't
- 1:26:57Speaker 5: know why you feel like that.
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: But I do. I live and die.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: I've never said we.
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: I live and die. I mean, you know, like I want.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: We're not on the team.
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: I want dominance.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: We're not part of the team in any way.
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: I'm like Conan the Barbarian. I want to, you know.
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: Do all bad things. Oh, yeah, that's a good one, Fred.
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: That's a deep dive.
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: Remember that one?
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: The lamentations of their women.
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: Exactly. That's what I want. I want that whole other.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: I don't like when you go 80s that I don't know.
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: Oh, you never saw Conan the Barbarian? No, you wouldn't
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: like that one.
- 1:27:26Speaker 5: Never saw any of the Arnold movies?
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it's too violent.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: Terminator?
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:27:32Speaker 5: Look at how mad Matt is at me.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: Pumping iron? I'm not mad.
- 1:27:38Speaker 5: I'm just shocked.
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: It's a hole in my resume. What do you want
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: me to tell you? Not even pumping iron? I didn't
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: see pumping iron. I didn't like that.
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: That was overblown.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: It's just funny. He's just walking around doing steroids and drugs.
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: Really bad camera work. It was just awful.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: Venice Beach in the 70s.
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: Sean in Ottawa.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: Sean.
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: Why are Patriots fans hoping Campbell ends up at guard?
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: He's never played guard in the NFL or college, so
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: I don't get why everyone assumes he'll be an all
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: pro or even competent at it. Campbell has looked good
- 1:28:12Speaker 4: this season. Lomo's arms are like a quarter inch longer
- 1:28:15Speaker 4: than Campbell's, so not sure the arm length debate is
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: an argument there. Are fans hoping we spend another first-round
- 1:28:21Speaker 4: pick for a right tackle next draft instead of an
- 1:28:24Speaker 4: edge or a wide receiver? I get everyone liked the
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: Campbell pick, but as a Patriots fan myself, once that
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: pick is made, I cheer for them to succeed, especially
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: at the premium positions. I don't think people are hoping
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: that he goes to guard.
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: I totally agree with you, Fred.
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: I think people are just saying, what if?
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: That could happen. I don't think people are hoping it happens.
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: I hope not.
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: As a back to like what you want from your team,
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: what I would want is those two guys to be
- 1:28:51Speaker 5: my two tackles.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: The pillars.
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: Now I've seen no evidence that either one of them
- 1:28:55Speaker 5: could play on the right side. So I would be
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: worried about that, but that's what I would want is
- 1:28:59Speaker 5: one of them to play left tackle and one of
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: them to play right tackle.
- 1:29:01Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: Yeah. Right.
- 1:29:02Speaker 5: I think that's what most Patriots fans want to see.
- 1:29:05Speaker 4: Okay. Um, Let's see.
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: Where I would differ from a lot of people is
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: I don't care which one of them is the left tackle.
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: I think a lot of people are really, really emotionally
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: pulling for Will Campbell to prove everybody wrong. And all
- 1:29:18Speaker 5: the people that talk about the arm length, they want
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: it because it's not enough to just have a good player.
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: You need to stick it to the media.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: You have to blow them out. Right.
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: Let's see.
- 1:29:29Speaker 11: Good, Mike.
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: I caught it.
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: Bryden is a first-time emailer.
- 1:29:34Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: And still too nervous to call.
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: Come on, guy. We're super nice.
- 1:29:40Speaker 5: Mike doesn't yell at everybody.
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: The only one he yells at is Paul.
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: I would like to thank you guys for the work
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: you do. I've been listening for 16 years now, going
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: back to the PFW days. You all make the time
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: between games that much more enjoyable. On the team, I'm
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: worried about the line and the injuries. Which line? I
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: also think Buffalo is going to be the struggle this year.
- 1:30:02Speaker 4: is going to struggle this year. I anticipate three games
- 1:30:05Speaker 4: against those honkies. Anyway, best wishes to you.
- 1:30:09Speaker 5: Are they going to struggle or are you going to
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: make the play? You have to play them in the playoffs.
- 1:30:12Speaker 4: Yeah, so they struggle, but they're going to make the
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: playoffs if we're going to play three games against them.
- 1:30:17Speaker 10: Oh, man. Yeah.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: I just watched that game the other night. It's just, again,
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: it's like if Josh Allen can hold together through the playoffs,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: they got a shot at it.
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: I really thought they were going to lose that game
- 1:30:27Speaker 4: going in, and that would kind of be an indicator of,
- 1:30:32Speaker 4: the way the rest of their season was going to go,
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: but they're pulling things out. You know, they're figuring it out.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: And the thing that, that would concern me about Buffalo
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: would be if Jim Leonard knows what he's doing. And
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: I think he does. Yeah.
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: What does that defense look like? Say in November and December,
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: because right now it's a mess. Their secondary is a mess.
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: They have one guy who competently can cover anybody. They
- 1:30:58Speaker 5: can't play in the secondary. And if, If he figures out, okay,
- 1:31:03Speaker 5: we can do this, this, and this. The rookie cornerback
- 1:31:07Speaker 5: that I can't pronounce his name, Benassin, something like that.
- 1:31:11Speaker 5: If he's any good, and then all of a sudden
- 1:31:14Speaker 5: you make Maxwell Hairston sort of your third or fourth corner.
- 1:31:17Speaker 5: He didn't start the other night. I watched the very
- 1:31:19Speaker 5: beginning of that game. That would worry me. All of
- 1:31:24Speaker 5: a sudden, he figures out the person, because it's a
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: totally different system than what They have the personnel for.
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: For sure.
- 1:31:31Speaker 5: And if he sort of figures that out. Because offensively.
- 1:31:35Speaker 5: The worst game they played. This year was against the Patriots.
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: And they scored 26 points. And missed an extra point.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: So.
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: Like.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: You're not beating them.
- 1:31:45Speaker 9: Like.
- 1:31:46Speaker 5: In a low scoring game, you've got to score against them.
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: And if they can figure out how to slow you
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: down a little bit, that would scare me.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: It'd be a great game here.
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: Uh, Anthony writes in, uh, going to the Patriots Packers
- 1:31:57Speaker 4: game in November, wondering if there's anything specific to know
- 1:32:00Speaker 4: about Gronk's, uh, hall of fame induction that Saturday should
- 1:32:04Speaker 4: be arriving with the wife early Saturday. So, um, Yeah,
- 1:32:10Speaker 4: it'll be out. I don't have the details yet in
- 1:32:12Speaker 4: terms of where the stage is going to be.
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: I was going to ask you that off air.
- 1:32:16Speaker 4: Yeah, but it'll be in the plaza probably.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: It will?
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: I would think.
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: What about the weather?
- 1:32:23Speaker 4: Oh, I don't know.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: What are they going to do?
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: Put it in the Cross Pavilion?
- 1:32:27Speaker 5: Or in the hall somewhere?
- 1:32:28Speaker 4: I don't know. And the SI Pavilion, I should say.
- 1:32:31Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:32:31Speaker 4: The hall's too small.
- 1:32:35Speaker 5: I know you couldn't have as many people that would
- 1:32:36Speaker 5: be in the plaza if you moved it inside, but
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: if you get a nor'easter, you're not going to have
- 1:32:41Speaker 5: a choice. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: It will be in November.
- 1:32:44Speaker 4: It'll be on Saturday.
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: It'll probably be later in the afternoon.
- 1:32:49Speaker 5: I just like to bring up possibilities that evidently people
- 1:32:51Speaker 5: don't really consider.
- 1:32:53Speaker 4: And then, much like we did last Sunday with Vinatieri
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: at halftime of the game, There'll be another ceremony for Gronk,
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: and that'll be streamed live on Patriots.com.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: Hey, Andy Hart, that wasn't cool.
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: What?
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: He goes, well, there could be a fire, too, and
- 1:33:13Speaker 5: we're not prepared for that. That's not the same thing.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: I was doing Breakfast Club.
- 1:33:16Speaker 5: It's not the same thing.
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: It's great, Paul, but what if there's a fire, I think,
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: endangering the lives of hundreds of Patriots fans. But you
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: were making fun of me a little bit.
- 1:33:23Speaker 4: Oh, I got a couple people. Okay, a lot of
- 1:33:26Speaker 4: people are in on this now.
- 1:33:28Speaker 5: My guess is there's going to be a lot of
- 1:33:31Speaker 5: people that are on your side.
- 1:33:31Speaker 4: No, no.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: In all seriousness.
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: Anthony, while I agree the entertainment value is better when
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: the games are closed, I can't possibly agree with Fred Moore.
- 1:33:40Speaker 4: Blow doors, kill spirit, send teams to the gulag, win
- 1:33:43Speaker 4: by 50, make the fans miserable, have opposing teams' players
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: complain post-game, and this week I want this the most.
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: F the Jersey losers.
- 1:33:52Speaker 5: So I have a question for you.
- 1:33:53Speaker 11: Yes.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: Mike, you too.
- 1:33:56Speaker 11: Okay.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: I'll participate.
- 1:33:58Speaker 5: What game were you more disappointed in after? Seattle or Jacksonville?
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: Jacksonville. More disappointed?
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: I'm not going to overthink it. I'm going to say Jacksonville.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: For me, it was Seattle.
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:34:13Speaker 4: I might say that, too, because you had that game.
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: So, like, the whole, like, make the fans upset? Yeah.
- 1:34:18Speaker 5: I lose 50 to nothing. I just flush that game
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: and move on to the next one.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: Jacksonville was a slow death.
- 1:34:23Speaker 5: Jacksonville, they got outclassed, so they didn't show up. The Seahawks,
- 1:34:27Speaker 5: I look at that game as a blown opportunity to
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: beat a really good team on the road. And they've
- 1:34:31Speaker 5: only themselves to blame. That game resonated with me as
- 1:34:35Speaker 5: a fan. To me, that was, we missed an opportunity
- 1:34:38Speaker 5: to beat a backup quarterback. And the Jacksonville game was,
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: oh no, we might really suck. Those were my two differences.
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: I don't ever think like that as a fan.
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: That one you came out fearful. Seattle, I came out,
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: like Paul said, disappointed.
- 1:34:54Speaker 5: I never once thought the Patriots could suck.
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: Like, never.
- 1:34:59Speaker 4: Jay and Indy, I love watching.
- 1:35:00Speaker 5: I didn't think that everything I saw before that was like,
- 1:35:03Speaker 5: wrong because of one bad game. Like I didn't think
- 1:35:06Speaker 5: Drake may possibly could. So this is why I kind
- 1:35:08Speaker 5: of pushed back at the whole, Oh, the Drake, wait,
- 1:35:10Speaker 5: Jake may bandwagon is back. Like, no, we had a
- 1:35:13Speaker 5: couple of bad games and people were talking about his games.
- 1:35:16Speaker 5: Like even Fred was.
- 1:35:17Speaker 4: Saying to Christian, it's been more than that.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: No, no, no. Well, he, I'm talking about this year.
- 1:35:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:35:22Speaker 5: Christian's right. He played four bad games in the playoffs
- 1:35:25Speaker 5: last year, but this year he was not playing well.
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: And I was just looking at it as he's not
- 1:35:33Speaker 5: playing well.
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: Not like, oh my God, is he not?
- 1:35:36Speaker 5: I believe on the post-game show, after one of the games,
- 1:35:39Speaker 5: I asked you if you would sign him to a
- 1:35:41Speaker 5: contract today, and you said no.
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: And I said, I would.
- 1:35:45Speaker 5: I would give him the money right now. If the
- 1:35:47Speaker 5: deadline was now, I would do it. I'm convinced he's
- 1:35:51Speaker 5: good enough to be my quarterback of the future.
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: Now, my confidence wasn't really shaken with Drake, but I
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: just think the team was a little bit shook after
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: that game of, You know, I haven't seen this team
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: get blown out a ton when they've ended up being
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: a good team. Like, you know, I don't remember, like,
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: good Patriot teams getting smacked and then they turn it
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: around and they're great. Like, I just think you get smacked.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: It's happened.
- 1:36:14Speaker 11: 14.
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: 31-0 in 2003. That's one.
- 1:36:15Speaker 11: 14.
- 1:36:15Speaker 4: They lost 41-14 in a Monday night game in Kansas City.
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: Yeah. We're on to Cincinnati. Yeah. I wasn't... I wasn't
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: overly moved by that one, though. That one didn't bug
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: me that much. I remember everyone was like crazy. I
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: agree with you.
- 1:36:31Speaker 5: Those games don't bug me. For whatever reason, it didn't
- 1:36:34Speaker 5: happen that night. The games that bug me are when
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: you don't execute when the game's on the line and
- 1:36:38Speaker 5: you lose.
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: No, I just felt like I was like, sometimes you
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: have games where you're not on. You guys are just
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: out to lunch and everybody's not here today. And it happens.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe it's not matching up with how
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: I felt about Jacksonville.
- 1:36:48Speaker 5: What was the year they got blown out in Jacksonville?
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: Yeah, 17, I think. 18?
- 1:36:52Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:36:54Speaker 5: It was the 17 AFC championship game they played, right?
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: 18.
- 1:36:57Speaker 5: They got blown out in Jacksonville. They got blown out
- 1:36:59Speaker 5: by Detroit. And then they won the Super Bowl.
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: Jay and Indy, I love watching the Patriots blow out
- 1:37:06Speaker 4: their opponents. Close games raise my blood pressure.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: They do.
- 1:37:11Speaker 4: Rick and Louisville on the subject of would you want
- 1:37:14Speaker 4: blowouts or close games? I have always agreed with Fred,
- 1:37:17Speaker 4: but this year my son's high school team is 8-0.
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: and has outscored their opponents 434 to 49.
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: Ooch.
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: Does he play for Sharon? Every game has had a
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: running clock, and it's become quite boring, so I now
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: lean Paul's way. Give me a little surprise.
- 1:37:33Speaker 5: Rick, so I can relate to this because, you know,
- 1:37:37Speaker 5: I had six years of high school football with my
- 1:37:39Speaker 5: two kids. They overlapped for two of those years, and
- 1:37:43Speaker 5: the league that they play in is not overly strong.
- 1:37:46Speaker 5: There's only, like, three teams that can compete, and... Again,
- 1:37:52Speaker 5: you can keep the Arlington Catholic game when the clock
- 1:37:54Speaker 5: is running the whole second half. I'll be at the
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: Bishop Feehan game. I'll be at the St. Mary's game
- 1:37:59Speaker 5: because those are the games where the other team has
- 1:38:01Speaker 5: the ability to punch back. And sometimes you lose. Like,
- 1:38:05Speaker 5: that's why you compete. Like, if you were guaranteed to win,
- 1:38:08Speaker 5: what fun is that?
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: Thomas says, I'm somewhere in between Paul and Fred. It
- 1:38:14Speaker 4: was fun to watch the Patriots kick the crap out
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: of the Raiders, but by the end I found myself
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: checking out a little bit. The game against the Bills
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: was exciting because it was two good teams playing each other.
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: I mean, I think I do need a blowout or
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: two every season. Like, if you could just say, like...
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: we blow out the Jets every year. Like, you know,
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: but I don't want it every single game to just be,
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: you know. I mean, and then you're in the midst
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: of a special season. And that's why, like, I would say, like. Oh,
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: God forbid.
- 1:38:39Speaker 4: I know. God forbid you're in the midst of a
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: special season. It's like, we're winning by 40 game points
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: every single week. And I'm just tired of flirting with greatness.
- 1:38:46Speaker 5: But that's why I would say the 07 team kind
- 1:38:49Speaker 5: of makes a hypocrite out of me.
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: But I do feel like... That was fun.
- 1:38:53Speaker 5: But it was fun because you were doing that to
- 1:38:56Speaker 5: good teams.
- 1:38:57Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 1:39:00Speaker 5: When you beat the Chargers in week two, 38-14, and
- 1:39:04Speaker 5: then you end up playing the Chargers in the AFC
- 1:39:07Speaker 5: Championship game.
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:39:08Speaker 5: You didn't beat the Raiders 45-17. You beat a team
- 1:39:12Speaker 5: that was as good as anybody else in the AFC
- 1:39:14Speaker 5: that year.
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: But that's a different argument.
- 1:39:16Speaker 5: No, but what I'm saying is I don't learn anything
- 1:39:19Speaker 5: in blowouts against these terrible teams. Generally, blowouts happen against
- 1:39:24Speaker 5: bad teams. That's generally what happens. You don't blow out
- 1:39:27Speaker 5: good teams. That's what made 07 different.
- 1:39:29Speaker 4: So when you go to the movies, you just go
- 1:39:31Speaker 4: to documentaries because you want to learn something?
- 1:39:35Speaker 5: He's so close to being Andy Hart, he can't even
- 1:39:38Speaker 5: see it.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: With the theater of the absurd that he takes it to.
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: That's not absurd.
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: Of course it is.
- 1:39:44Speaker 4: You want to be entertained. You go to a movie.
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: You want to be entertained.
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: Yes, I want to be entertained. I'm not entertained in blowouts.
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: I don't know how much more clear I can be.
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: You want to learn something.
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: About my team. I want to be a good team
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: against good teams.
- 1:39:56Speaker 4: How about you learn your team? Your team is dominant.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: Your team is special.
- 1:39:58Speaker 4: They're freaking great.
- 1:39:59Speaker 5: And again, in 07, again, this is why I think
- 1:40:03Speaker 5: that's a little bit different. Yes, the 07 team was
- 1:40:06Speaker 5: dominant against everyone.
- 1:40:08Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: Not just the Lambs.
- 1:40:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: Everyone.
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: And would you rather have that or them?
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: Yeah, that was games.
- 1:40:14Speaker 5: Also, that was that was as enjoyable a season as
- 1:40:17Speaker 5: you could have.
- 1:40:17Speaker 4: So you're with me.
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: All right. And that season, because they played good.
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: OK, so you really.
- 1:40:25Speaker 5: Splitting hairs here. But I said up front that that's
- 1:40:28Speaker 5: why I'm being a little hypocritical with 07. I feel
- 1:40:30Speaker 5: a little different about that particular team because it was different.
- 1:40:35Speaker 5: But they weren't beating up on the little sisters of
- 1:40:38Speaker 5: the poor.
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: I remember even the Bengals game with Carson Palmer and
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: them being like... Before the game, I thought, this will
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: be a good test. It was another. I remember being like,
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: these are good teams. And then Pittsburgh, the Dallas game,
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: back and forth. I mean, that scratches both your edges.
- 1:40:56Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 1:40:57Speaker 5: That game was 31-28 at one point. And the Patriots
- 1:41:01Speaker 5: put it away.
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: They had to fight because the other team fought back.
- 1:41:05Speaker 5: That was a great game. And I saw Kate Hudson
- 1:41:08Speaker 5: after that game.
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: Anthony's in Seattle on the hotline. What's up, Anthony?
- 1:41:13Speaker 8: Hey, Fred, Paul, Deuce.
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: Hey, what's up, Anthony?
- 1:41:17Speaker 9: Is Evan out there?
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: We don't know yet. We're waiting for the report from
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: the CDC.
- 1:41:21Speaker 5: Fred's getting ready to send the priest.
- 1:41:25Speaker 8: Hey, I was sorry for calling in late today. I
- 1:41:27Speaker 8: was just listening to you guys finishing up yesterday's show
- 1:41:30Speaker 8: and just hearing you guys, you know, glowing, speaking glowingly
- 1:41:33Speaker 8: about Accus and then Raritan's making plays. And I even thought, oh, hey,
- 1:41:37Speaker 8: by the way, Lobo got in. And then, you know what?
- 1:41:39Speaker 9: The light bulb went off, and I.
- 1:41:40Speaker 8: Said, you know what, let me call in because I'm
- 1:41:43Speaker 8: not big on caller on caller, but our buddy down
- 1:41:44Speaker 8: in L.A., he called in. He said, give him his lumps.
- 1:41:47Speaker 8: He's down to take his lumps.
- 1:41:48Speaker 9: Well, I'm going to hold him to that.
- 1:41:49Speaker 8: So I want to make sure all lumps are accounted for,
- 1:41:52Speaker 8: not just the Drake May take, but your unfocused, undisciplined
- 1:41:56Speaker 8: coach who didn't get you a guy in the first
- 1:41:58Speaker 8: round that could help.
- 1:41:59Speaker 9: Well, he helped.
- 1:41:59Speaker 8: If nothing else happens for the rest of the year,
- 1:42:01Speaker 8: he helped you out. And then not to mention your
- 1:42:03Speaker 8: second-round pick, stud, third-round pick on the fast track to
- 1:42:07Speaker 8: possibly becoming a stud. So I just want to make
- 1:42:09Speaker 8: sure all lumps are accounted for.
- 1:42:11Speaker 7: That's all I got, guys.
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: All right, thanks. Studs?
- 1:42:14Speaker 4: Studs.
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: These guys are studs?
- 1:42:16Speaker 4: They could be someday.
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: It's good what they're getting out of them. Could be
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: out of the league, too. I mean, who knows? All
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: along the summer, Lomo's going to have to play, and
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: he's going to have to start. So here we go. And,
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: you know, hopefully he holds up like he did in–
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: Limited opportunities last week, but good tests for some good
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: edge rushers from the Jets. I see this year, too,
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: as just trying to acquire as much experience as possible.
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: Last year was a flash in the pan a little bit,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: and you got to go to the Super Bowl. This
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: year is about solidifying your place and making sure you
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: have that depth next year. Then we'll get some experience,
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: and we'll see where it all ends up next year.
- 1:42:51Speaker 4: Tucker writes in, the Josh McDaniels curve. We've recently been
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: reminded that it takes a few weeks for Josh to
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: begin to unlock the full potential of the offense. Can
- 1:43:00Speaker 4: we expect that to occur faster as Drake May gets
- 1:43:04Speaker 4: more experience, or will we always be limited by how
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: fast the newest player on the offense can pick it up?
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: And then when does it stop? It seems like the
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: offense got stale towards the end of last season. As
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: Drake May gains more experience, can we keep pushing that
- 1:43:17Speaker 4: drop-off out further and further?
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: I can't help but bring this up because we were
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: just talking about 07. Do you think Josh sat on
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: stuff for 07? Or did he come out guns blazing
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: when he was like 38 points?
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: It was Randy Moss and Wes Welker.
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: Is that all it is? You don't even have to
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: worry about anything when you've got that much talent?
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: You just move the ball.
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: You were just better. Oh, my God. That first touchdown
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: pass against the Jets, I remember that like crystal clear
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: being like, oh, my God.
- 1:43:44Speaker 5: Because maybe that's a cautionary tale. They came out flying
- 1:43:47Speaker 5: and they couldn't do anything down the stretch.
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: And they did sputter down the end, right? They did
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: a little. Lawrence Maroney had to get them through that
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: Jets and Miami game. I mean, he got them through
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: the second half of that Chargers-AFC championship game.
- 1:43:58Speaker 5: They scored like 38 points every week for like. the
- 1:44:02Speaker 5: first eight weeks of the season, and then all of
- 1:44:03Speaker 5: a sudden it's 20-10. They're struggling. Even in the playoffs,
- 1:44:09Speaker 5: they were 21 points against the Chargers. They scored 38
- 1:44:13Speaker 5: against that same team earlier in the year.
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: And Phillip Rivers had both his ACLs.
- 1:44:19Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, that game could have been... In fairness,
- 1:44:22Speaker 5: that game could have had a different outcome if the
- 1:44:26Speaker 5: Chargers had any players healthy. It was such a remarkable, like,
- 1:44:31Speaker 5: what a difference a year makes when I went from,
- 1:44:33Speaker 5: you know, going to that 0-6 Chargers game where they
- 1:44:35Speaker 5: were 14-2 and had the MVP and were favored.
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: And then you cut to one year later, and it's
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: like completely opposite, like how quickly that all turned.
- 1:44:44Speaker 4: Martin in Quebec, I'm currently listening to yesterday's show, and
- 1:44:48Speaker 4: I feel the same way about the referees calling way
- 1:44:51Speaker 4: too many penalties. With technology evolving quickly, especially with AI,
- 1:44:55Speaker 4: do you ever see the games being officiated by computer
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: using all the camera angles at their disposition, perhaps even
- 1:45:01Speaker 4: have the option to adjust the sensitivity level of the
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: penalties called? Would you like that?
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: AI refs.
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: I don't think so because I think you need that
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: physical presence on the field.
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: Otherwise, guys are going to get in fights. Yeah, it's
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: going to break stuff up. Have a presence.
- 1:45:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: I don't want the computers to be calling the penalties.
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: I just want technology to be used in looking at it.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: Just get it right. Just get it right. They got
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: it right.
- 1:45:28Speaker 5: Either that or eliminate the technology. I can go either
- 1:45:32Speaker 5: way on that. You can convince me either way.
- 1:45:35Speaker 4: John's in Dallas. What's up, John?
- 1:45:38Speaker 7: What's up, fellas?
- 1:45:39Speaker 4: How you guys doing? Hey, Jeff.
- 1:45:42Speaker 7: I had the pleasure of going to the game on Sunday.
- 1:45:44Speaker 7: It's probably my 15th Patriots game, but my first one
- 1:45:47Speaker 7: I ever brought my fiancee to. So I guess she's
- 1:45:48Speaker 7: the good luck charm because I've never seen him win
- 1:45:50Speaker 7: that big in 15 games. I had the pleasure of
- 1:45:54Speaker 7: having some legal seafood clam chowder, thanks to your recommendation.
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: Love that.
- 1:45:58Speaker 7: And a Diet Pepsi. So all we were missing was
- 1:46:00Speaker 7: a little Brunt Workwear, and we'd have all the- Nice.
- 1:46:03Speaker 4: There you go. There you go. And you don't have
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: snow down there, so you don't have an errands, but
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: that's okay.
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: That's a good day.
- 1:46:08Speaker 9: Exactly, exactly.
- 1:46:09Speaker 7: Random question for you guys, totally off topic, but what's
- 1:46:13Speaker 7: it going to take for Ramondre Stevenson and or Hunter
- 1:46:17Speaker 7: Henry to get a red jacket? You know, obviously we
- 1:46:19Speaker 7: drafted Ramondre, so I think, you know, if he has
- 1:46:21Speaker 7: another contractor, there's a good chance. But, you know, is
- 1:46:24Speaker 7: Hunter Henry a player who didn't start his career with
- 1:46:27Speaker 7: New England? somebody that could be in contention for a
- 1:46:29Speaker 7: red jacket, depending on how the rest of the time
- 1:46:31Speaker 7: it all pans out. So, what are your thoughts? Thank God.
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: Don't go yet. Have you ever been to Monarch in Dallas?
- 1:46:39Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah. One of my buddies actually had a wedding
- 1:46:42Speaker 7: reception there.
- 1:46:43Speaker 4: That's a great restaurant, huh?
- 1:46:45Speaker 7: Very good.
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: It's a little touristy.
- 1:46:46Speaker 7: I mean, look, you guys, if you're ever in town,
- 1:46:48Speaker 7: please let me know. I got some good recommendations.
- 1:46:49Speaker 4: Okay. Thanks, John.
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: Hunter Henry? What do you think on those guys?
- 1:46:54Speaker 11: No.
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: You're small hall guys.
- 1:46:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I would be a no.
- 1:46:58Speaker 5: And I know where Hunter Henry is going to end
- 1:47:01Speaker 5: up on the tight end lists, you know, in team history.
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: But I would I would be a no on both
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: of those guys.
- 1:47:11Speaker 5: They're good players. They're good players and they have been
- 1:47:14Speaker 5: good Patriots.
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: But I don't know.
- 1:47:18Speaker 5: I don't really look at them as. Like, so we
- 1:47:22Speaker 5: have Rob Gronkowski, and I'm not saying that that should
- 1:47:24Speaker 5: be the only standard.
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: Like, you have to be that good.
- 1:47:27Speaker 5: But I look at Rob Gronkowski and Ben Coates. I
- 1:47:31Speaker 5: don't look at Hunter Henry like that.
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: Do you?
- 1:47:34Speaker 10: No.
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: No.
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: I'm surprised.
- 1:47:36Speaker 5: I thought he was going to button hook me there.
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: I don't.
- 1:47:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree. I was thinking of, what's.
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: His name from the 80s? Marv Cook?
- 1:47:45Speaker 4: Not Marv Cook. Russ Francis.
- 1:47:47Speaker 5: Oh, Russ Francis is better than those guys.
- 1:47:51Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: It'll be interesting, though, when you get past the dynasty
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: guys or the obvious dynasty guys, and then you get
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: to some of the more down-the-list dynasty guys versus some
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: of the guys who, like, bridge the gap to Drake May.
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: And I would assume probably, you know, maybe I'd bet
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: Drake May probably going to be a red jacket guy someday.
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: But how do you get there?
- 1:48:10Speaker 4: Forget about Gerard Mayo as a head coach.
- 1:48:13Speaker 9: No.
- 1:48:13Speaker 4: Do you think he should be in from a linebacker?
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: Gerard Mayo?
- 1:48:16Speaker 10: Yeah. No.
- 1:48:17Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: That was very dismissive.
- 1:48:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:48:20Speaker 5: I agree with Mike, but I'm just glad that someone
- 1:48:22Speaker 5: else did it.
- 1:48:22Speaker 4: He was a good player.
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: He was a good player.
- 1:48:24Speaker 4: He was a good player.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: Smart.
- 1:48:27Speaker 4: They shouldn't be in the Hall because they were good
- 1:48:29Speaker 4: guys and I like them.
- 1:48:31Speaker 5: There are already too many guys in the Hall that
- 1:48:33Speaker 5: I don't think were Hall of Fame worthy.
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:48:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: Well, you can't get Wes Welker. I mean, Wes Welker
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: is like.
- 1:48:38Speaker 5: Can't even get him on the ballot.
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: Wes Welker should be in.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: Yeah, he should.
- 1:48:43Speaker 4: Anyway. All right.
- 1:48:44Speaker 5: For the fifth year in a row, I'm going to
- 1:48:46Speaker 5: resign if I can't get him on the ballot.
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: No, I'm just kidding.
- 1:48:49Speaker 4: Paul's going to slam down his D'Angelo sub.
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: So it's him and Mankins. And who else will be
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: up this year? DMACC. Maybe in the mix.
- 1:48:58Speaker 4: Slater. Slater. Yep.
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: Adam Vinatieri. Adam Vinatieri.
- 1:49:03Speaker 4: Will he get in?
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: You know what I was thinking about?
- 1:49:06Speaker 5: No, no, no. Adam Vinatieri is not in the Hall
- 1:49:08Speaker 5: of Fame. Well, Fred said that was the real Hall
- 1:49:11Speaker 5: of Fame that we had a ceremony for the other day.
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: I just don't think this will ever happen again. I
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: just think Adam Vinatieri is in such a unique position
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: because he was great in New England and then he
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: went on to more greatness with another team. And that's
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: why there's some question of whether or not he's in
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: the Patriots Hall of Fame. But I just don't see
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: another player at this point who is.
- 1:49:30Speaker 5: There's no question.
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: The reason why he's not in because he's up against
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: New England. But the reason why he's not in the
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: Patriots Hall of Fame has nothing to do with his
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: time in Indianapolis. It has to do with the fact
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: that he was up against Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: in the fans' vote. I understand that. The fans are
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: going to vote for their favorites, and they should. That's
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: what being a fan is all about. I just don't
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: think this situation will happen again. I just don't think
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: there'll be another guy like that. Vrabel.
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: It happened to Vrabel.
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: Well, I'm saying I don't think there'll be another guy
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: that happened after this.
- 1:49:57Speaker 5: I think it could happen a lot. I think it's
- 1:49:59Speaker 5: going to continue to happen.
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:50:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:50:01Speaker 5: Devin McCourty's coming up soon. Like, there's going to be guys.
- 1:50:04Speaker 5: Matthew Slater's going to be on that ballot soon. There's
- 1:50:06Speaker 5: going to be guys that are going to be fan
- 1:50:08Speaker 5: favorites over other guys. And there's only one guy that
- 1:50:12Speaker 5: can go in at a time, and the fans vote.
- 1:50:15Speaker 5: So it's going to happen for a while.
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: Now, maybe you're talking like 20 years from now when
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: all of the dynasty guys are in. But that's the thing. Like, well, hey,
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: he was a part of two Super Bowls. What did
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: he do? Not much. You know, like, trade flowers. Oh, no.
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: You know what I mean? At a certain point, you're
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: not going to have Super Bowl after Super Bowl after
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: Super Bowl.
- 1:50:34Speaker 5: But don't you think, like, Wes Welker, Logan Mankins, and
- 1:50:36Speaker 5: Adam Vinatieri are no doubt, no questions asked, Patriots Hall
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: of Famers.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: There's three years, at least, into the future that you got.
- 1:50:43Speaker 5: Yeah, well, they're not going to get in the next
- 1:50:44Speaker 5: three years. I'm just going to tell you that right now.
- 1:50:47Speaker 5: All three of those guys will not go in the
- 1:50:49Speaker 5: next three years. There's going to be other guys on
- 1:50:51Speaker 5: the ballot.
- 1:50:52Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: I don't know if I feel this.
- 1:50:53Speaker 4: That are more fan favorites.
- 1:50:55Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:50:57Speaker 5: Is Devin McCourty in that group? Like, no questions asked? Like,
- 1:51:01Speaker 5: Patriots Hall of Famer?
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: I have reservations.
- 1:51:04Speaker 10: Really?
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:51:06Speaker 5: I would say he's in that group with Logan Mankins.
- 1:51:08Speaker 4: What about Matthew Slater?
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: I would have reservations there. Yeah. A lot of reservations.
- 1:51:14Speaker 5: But there's no reservation. I'm going to tell you right now,
- 1:51:16Speaker 5: he's going to get on the ballot. And if he's
- 1:51:17Speaker 5: on the ballot and the fans vote, he's going in. Like,
- 1:51:21Speaker 5: that's just what's going to happen.
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: Who are the true locks, though, left that haven't been
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: on the ballot or been considered?
- 1:51:27Speaker 5: The only one that hasn't been on the ballot that's
- 1:51:29Speaker 5: a lock, in my opinion, is Welker.
- 1:51:31Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:51:31Speaker 5: The rest of them have been on the ballot.
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. I don't know. It's hard. It was just such
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: a unique run where you have so many players. And,
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: you know, like in the 90s, you don't have a
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: problem coming out. You know, I mean, the problem is
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: that you don't have anybody.
- 1:51:45Speaker 5: I'm teasing you a little bit, but I know exactly
- 1:51:46Speaker 5: what you're talking about. It's going to work itself out.
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: You're going to get to a point where it's all
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: going to be like, yes, it's obvious. And I think
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: you were at that point maybe early in the going
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: where it was obvious every year because you didn't have
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: a log jam.
- 1:51:57Speaker 5: Well, it was to me, but not to my colleagues.
- 1:52:00Speaker 5: There were guys that were put on a ballot that
- 1:52:02Speaker 5: I didn't even think were Patriots Hall of Famers.
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: And let alone be finalists.
- 1:52:07Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: At least two.
- 1:52:08Speaker 5: And I don't even want to be disrespectful and bring
- 1:52:10Speaker 5: up the names. But when you go beyond that, like
- 1:52:16Speaker 5: with the whole way, like I don't think it's a travesty,
- 1:52:22Speaker 5: which I've heard people call it. I don't think it
- 1:52:24Speaker 5: was a quote unquote mistake that Julian Edelman's in the
- 1:52:28Speaker 5: Hall of Fame and Adam Vinatieri is not. And I
- 1:52:30Speaker 5: certainly don't think it's a mistake that Rob Gronkowski got
- 1:52:33Speaker 5: in before Adam Vinatieri.
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: That's like.
- 1:52:38Speaker 5: This is a Patriots Hall of Fame. Are you telling
- 1:52:41Speaker 5: me that there's anybody that would say that Edelman and
- 1:52:44Speaker 5: Gronkowski are not Patriots Hall of Fame worthy?
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 1:52:48Speaker 5: So if you have one guy that's Hall of Fame
- 1:52:50Speaker 5: worthy against another guy that's 100% Hall of Fame worthy,
- 1:52:54Speaker 5: you can only pick one. So I don't think anybody's
- 1:52:57Speaker 5: done anything wrong.
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: I was really getting.
- 1:52:59Speaker 5: I was getting pushback last week from, you know, on
- 1:53:02Speaker 5: my show when I went into Felger and Mads. You know, like, well,
- 1:53:04Speaker 5: you know, you guys, I go, I don't know exactly
- 1:53:07Speaker 5: what you want us to do. He's on the ballot.
- 1:53:10Speaker 5: He's a finalist. And the fans vote.
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: And they went.
- 1:53:13Speaker 5: And I don't think it's ridiculous that Gronk got the
- 1:53:15Speaker 5: vote over Vinatieri. I don't think that that's silly. I
- 1:53:18Speaker 5: don't think it's embarrassing.
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: To us in any way. Who would you vote for?
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: But my point, like, he thinks, you know, Mike Felger.
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: thinks that we doctored the vote. We put our thumb
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: on the scale. And I just.
- 1:53:30Speaker 5: Keep telling them that only one can get in and
- 1:53:33Speaker 5: the fans voted. And I don't think, by the way,
- 1:53:36Speaker 5: it's the wrong choice to go with Gronk. If I
- 1:53:38Speaker 5: were voting as a fan, I would have voted Gronk. Now,
- 1:53:42Speaker 5: I would have voted Vinatieri over Edelman. But Edelman is
- 1:53:46Speaker 5: a no-questions-asked, 100% Patriots Hall of Famer. I just think
- 1:53:51Speaker 5: Vinatieri had a better career, and I would have picked
- 1:53:53Speaker 5: Vinatieri first. But Gronk had a better career than both
- 1:53:55Speaker 5: of them. So that's why I would have taken Gronk.
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: I think maybe a better way to state my point
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: was that I don't think someone will get into the
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: Pro Football Hall of Fame and then become a Patriots
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: Hall of Famer. I don't think that that conflict is
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: going to happen again.
- 1:54:09Speaker 5: That's a different category, but it could happen.
- 1:54:14Speaker 4: Why?
- 1:54:15Speaker 5: No, Mike's thing could happen. I don't think it will either.
- 1:54:19Speaker 5: I think this is kind of a unique situation with
- 1:54:23Speaker 5: so many no-brainer candidates at the same time.
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: That's just the hardest part to me, is that you
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: have a Pro Football Hall of Famer that's not on
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: your team. That, to me, was the gist of it.
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: I don't know. Robert writes in.
- 1:54:37Speaker 4: On the topic of close games versus blowout, I like
- 1:54:40Speaker 4: the close win like the Bills game. I agree with
- 1:54:42Speaker 4: Paul that a close win tells me more about the
- 1:54:45Speaker 4: state of the team than a blowout. However, if it's
- 1:54:48Speaker 4: a night game on Thursday, Sunday, or Monday, give me
- 1:54:50Speaker 4: a blowout by halftime one way or the other so
- 1:54:52Speaker 4: I can go to bed. Not as easy to stay
- 1:54:55Speaker 4: up late after turning 50.
- 1:54:57Speaker 5: I agree with that as a fan.
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: Go ahead, Mike. I think the hard part, though, is
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: sometimes you blow a team out. How do you know
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: they're a good team or a bad team? That's where
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: you get stuck like, Were they good? Were they not?
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: I mean, to the Jaguars, do they feel like they
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: blew out a good Patriots team, or do they feel
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: like they blew out a crappy Patriots team?
- 1:55:12Speaker 5: Professionally, I would much rather have it be the opposite
- 1:55:15Speaker 5: of what that was. I would be like that as
- 1:55:17Speaker 5: a fan, too. I'd just go to bed because this
- 1:55:19Speaker 5: game is over. If I have to stay up until
- 1:55:23Speaker 5: 2 o'clock in the morning to talk about a game,
- 1:55:25Speaker 5: I would much rather have it be a close game
- 1:55:27Speaker 5: that I can talk about, like, the things that interest me,
- 1:55:30Speaker 5: like clock management.
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: And game management and stuff like that. You know, why
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: they do this.
- 1:55:34Speaker 5: I mean, you could have had a field day with
- 1:55:37Speaker 5: the Bills and Rams the other night with some of
- 1:55:39Speaker 5: the decisions that were made down the stretch of that game.
- 1:55:41Speaker 4: Gerald and Burlington, give me the blowout. That way I
- 1:55:45Speaker 4: can walk the dog when there's four minutes left in
- 1:55:47Speaker 4: the game and be back in time for the postgame show.
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: There you go. There you go. yeah different reasons yeah
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: yeah i like it i i do need to blow
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: up blow out one or two a year though i
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: do i i don't want them all close games but
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: i generally like the close games i like competition.
- 1:56:01Speaker 5: Yeah and again like the bottom line as a fan
- 1:56:06Speaker 5: i don't care how i win as long as i
- 1:56:08Speaker 5: get the w at the end of the game like
- 1:56:10Speaker 5: i'm just telling you what i find more enjoyable to
- 1:56:12Speaker 5: experience yeah yeah.
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: I mean i think there's a There's a part of
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: it professionally. We have to do our show. So having
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: the game kind of wrapped up, that's nice to get
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: into the show and kind of not worry about the
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: back and forth down to the end. But it's also
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: probably more fun to do one of our post-game shows
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: when it was a great game and it was.
- 1:56:30Speaker 9: Back and forth.
- 1:56:31Speaker 5: There's a reason why the Buffalo post-game show was as
- 1:56:33Speaker 5: fun as it was.
- 1:56:34Speaker 4: I'm talking about purely as a fan.
- 1:56:35Speaker 5: Fred wasn't on it.
- 1:56:37Speaker 4: I want my team to just lay waste to people.
- 1:56:43Speaker 4: And then I want them to just... Murder them and.
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: Then take their girlfriend.
- 1:56:48Speaker 4: You know?
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:56:50Speaker 4: I love it. That'll be it.
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: I didn't see that coming.
- 1:56:54Speaker 5: Like a 45-minute debate over, would you rather win a
- 1:56:57Speaker 5: blowout or a close game?
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: You never know.
- 1:56:59Speaker 4: All right. That'll be it for this edition of Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:57:02Speaker 4: But have no fear. We'll be back tomorrow at 11 o'clock.
- 1:57:06Speaker 4: We've got picks tomorrow.
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: Any preview?
- 1:57:08Speaker 5: Real quick, I'm just going to tell you, I am
- 1:57:10Speaker 5: predicting that the Patriots win this game 33-16. I may
- 1:57:15Speaker 5: not be here to do my picks live on the
- 1:57:17Speaker 5: air tomorrow. I know you guys all look for me
- 1:57:20Speaker 5: as that beacon of hope.
- 1:57:22Speaker 4: Who's going to keep the book?
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: Well atop of the picks.
- 1:57:24Speaker 5: And once again, I separated myself even further from the
- 1:57:28Speaker 5: pack again after week four.
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: Oh, really? Week five.
- 1:57:32Speaker 4: So would you rather have a close picks season or
- 1:57:36Speaker 4: one that you blow us away?
- 1:57:37Speaker 5: I just want to win as many games as I can.
- 1:57:38Speaker 5: You don't want to blow us away?
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: I don't care what you guys do.
- 1:57:41Speaker 5: I just want to win the games. I can't control
- 1:57:43Speaker 5: what you guys do.
- 1:57:47Speaker 4: Do you like to compete?
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: I love to compete. All right.
- 1:57:50Speaker 5: If there's one thing you've learned about me in 28 years,
- 1:57:54Speaker 5: I'm stubbornly competitive.
- 1:57:57Speaker 4: All right. So 11 o'clock and then catch 22 at
- 1:58:01Speaker 4: 10 tomorrow, right?
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: But what's going on?
- 1:58:04Speaker 4: We don't know. Both of them are questionable.
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: Where's Evan?
- 1:58:07Speaker 4: We'll see.
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: Might have to do that on another. Maybe Mike and
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: I will just come in and catch 22.
- 1:58:12Speaker 4: They might have to both do it from their deathbeds.
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:58:15Speaker 4: What's going on over there?
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: It's the same deathbed.
